personally i think the best way to look at this election in terms of "who am i (as a viewer) going to vote for" is that first and foremost, for us, this is a STORY. we are watching a story (and also a fun game and funny people doing funnies together, but for election purposes we'll say that)

therefore our goal should not be "which candidate has the best policies" or "which candidate is best for the island". we don't CARE. that's not our business.

we don't care what's good for the islanders. THAT'S NOT OUR BUSINESS. we're not islanders nor are we players. we are the guy in the bar watching the Truman show. our business is "what story do we want to see?"

each candidate offers something different.

(note: i don't claim to understand their platforms, for personal reasons i haven't followed it closely bc i kinda suspected there was gonna be drama and didn't feel like stressing myself over minecraft politics; my local elections freak me out enough lol)

for a rough example:

elquackity: obvious federation plant, clear enemy for the rest of the server. man-vs-government arc.

forever: did you like cellbit's infiltration arc? i could predict something like that following in forever's footsteps (forever sneaks around the federation, learns a few secrets, continues to make his changes to the server but does perhaps experience horrors, most likely a slower burn than cellbit's arc but certainly a lot of espionage and theorycrafting)

those of y'all with a sounder grasp on candidates, sound off in the notes on what we can expect FROM A STORY PERSPECTIVE; i actively ignore the debates (they make me want to cry lmfao). i don't care what their platform is exactly, where will it take the story?

and i'll repossess your liver if i see any goddamn cc hate or harassment in there. this is more than not a safe space for that, this is an active danger zone. watch yourselves. <3

Little stuff (the sweet and the sour): I looove this one so much bc it really fleshes out Linda's character and while there's a lot of hilarity in it, it does really delve deeper in some aspects the movies totally gloss over! Also Linda and Marty are just SUCH siblings in this. Like their conversations are just any brother and sister ever

Basically, the McFly's have their second kid and it's a daughter and Doc is devastated bc he thinks he and Marty changed the timeline and Marty hasn't been born (one of the tags for this fic is 'doc brown being the happiest any cis person has ever been to learn what being transgender is ' and even for that golden tag alone I think anyone should read it lol)

posting here bc theres less ppl following me on this blog compared to main FDJSKL but it is thundering (and therefore lightning is striking as well) currently and we've been in an intense heatwave and there's evac alerts and orders all around the area and i've just kind of been like 🧍‍♂️ for the past couple weeks trying to be chill about it bc this is the fourth or fifth year in a row of this so i am somewhat used to it but also aough :( also now i have an expensive drawing tablet that i would not be able to buy a new one of so i am trying to figure out if i should include it in my grab-n-go evac bag... its so big though and would take up so much room but RRRGHHH I DUNNO i hate these sorts of decisions 😭😭😭

building off my last post (pulling at one thread from within it) i really feel like the single most common issue™ i have in other people's fandom posts/fics/interpretations of maeve (aside from the fact that i have such a detailed personal construction of her in my head that it's hard for me to accept any interpretation that deviates in any way LMAO)...

is that to me, it feels so clear that every other relationship maeve has exists in the shadow of her relationship with elena. but i seldom feel like other people's posts/interpretations take that into account at all.

that doesn't mean other relationships are less important, but they're all colored by this one that is, as far as canon goes, the most important & oldest relationship she has.

her relationship with homelander has many layers to it of course, but a very IMPORTANT layer that I almost never see anyone but me acknowledging, directly or indirectly, is that maeve had (and lost) the love of her life before she first got with homelander. that certainly would color their interactions. homelander of course has unique connections with her in other ways, significant ways, but i think sometimes about how different it might have been, if maeve didn't enter that relationship already knowing what her love for elena felt like. bc i do think they "loved" each other in a sense, a lot of passion, and attraction, and i definitely think he THOUGHT he loved her in the "realest" sense, in the soulmates sense, and maybe she would have thought the same, if she had not already loved elena, and the quiet existence of this fact, as well as the fact that she never shares it and he never knows it (until long after they're broken up) is like silent but also screaming so loud throughout their entire relationship, as i see it.

her relationship with madelyn (which, okay, barely exists in canon, but if you choose to imagine it) includes the fact that madelyn all but certainly knew about elena, yet chose to keep it to herself.

her relationship with annie, too. whether it's their canon relationship... well, this one is actually pretty explicit, given that one of their scenes is specifically centered on maeve drawing parallels between her past with elena & annie's relationship with hughie... or if it's in the context of romantically shipping them.

even her relationship with butcher - i won't turn this into a whole paragraph about how underexplored that felt in canon, but like, if you wanna think about it even the tiniest bit more than what was shown... the only reason maeve's working with him at ALL, for starters, is because she fully turned on homelander after he threatened elena, and because she has now "lost" elena and thus has no more to lose, herself, so she's open to the same sort of "scorched earth" methods that butcher is. because he also lost a love. that is something that connects them, more than the hatred for homelander itself. the REASON for the hatred. (well, that's one reason they have in common. there's more to say about their individual distinct reasons for hating homelander, but dang this post isn't about that, it's already longer than it was meant to be!)

like yes i ship maevelena a lot but also even when i'm not writing about them specifically, i just think, it's such a key aspect of maeve's character and how she acts in her other relationships. and that's often something i feel missing in interpretations that end up feeling like "haha maeve says twink"

luis buñuel’s controversial documentary land without bread (1933) presents an interesting angle to the major trends of class commentary throughout his filmography. the documentary, which presents visceral accounts of extreme poverty situated in the center of europe and specifically of buñuel’s native spain, parallels his later the exterminating angel (1962) in its very explicit juxtaposition of “modern” prosperity and refinement with a brutal, savage struggle for existence; as well as los olvidados (1950) in its grisly depiction of destitution. the difference between these films and this is the obvious separation between camera and subject in land without bread (1933). the flat-voiced, newsreel-style narration—performed live by the director in original screenings—contrasts viscerally with the shocking images of destitution, disease, and death from within the heart of a nation so proud of its modernization and democratic self-improvement. this shock and contrast, constantly situationally highlighting the proximity of the camera and cameramen to their suffering subjects, whom they never save, is the central goal of the film, stripping away the romanticization of spain and, simultaneously, of the callous travel films turning the suffering in african countries into european entertainment. the film certainly succeeds on that front; however, like in later documentary parody cannibal holocaust (1980), some of the striking, shocking images of everyday brutality were not so incidental to the camera’s presence: buñuel infamously reportedly caused the deaths of two animals, which he filmed to illustrate the omnipresence of cruel, accidental death. by watching the somewhat too-good shot composition of these scenes, one can get a sense from the film itself that these deaths were not true coincidences; however, i cannot guess the extent to which buñuel intended the audience to think that. in any case, the camera’s provocation of its subjects is central to this film, even if it is somewhat unusual in buñuel’s filmography; however, the purpose for which it does this—closing the affective gap between refinement and utter, despicable, dehumanizing poverty—connect land without bread (1933) very strongly to the rest of the director’s work
