Running Commentary: What is “ok to do” in Mixed-Culture Supernatural Fiction?

Dear readers: 

Today we are trying something new. To give you some insight into our process in the Japanese moderator section, we are presenting our response in the form of running commentary to show you how we dissect and answer long asks. We hope this makes clear what points are useful and not useful when sending us a query. As always, this is for learning purposes, not callouts. Be prepared: this is a long one. 

To summarize: the asker is looking to create a comic drawn in Japanese manga style, and has provided a long summary of the story and worldbuilding which involves a mix of “reimagined” Japanese yokai mythos and cultural symbols from many other sources. They have questions with respect to cultural appropriation, coding etiquette, and “what is and isn’t ok.” 

Opening Comments

I know a common advice when it comes to the thing I am about to ask is to talk to people involved in __, but I struggle with opening up to strangers for reasons I'm uncomfortable explaining. 

Marika (M): This is already a red flag. If you want to engage with another culture without talking to people from that culture, then research is going to be very challenging. You won’t have members of that culture to guide you towards sources and perspectives they feel most accurately represents public opinion. If I were in your shoes, I might start with tackling my discomfort when engaging with other people, if only to improve my work. If you aren’t ready to engage with a culture and its people directly, then I think you should wait until you are. 

I should note, reaching out to the Japanese mod team at WWC does count as engagement, but WWC should not and cannot be the only point of contact because there is no single, legitimate cultural perspective. 

Rina (R): Also, you don’t need to “open up” to strangers or talk to them in person to get perspectives. Asking specific research questions anonymously to a forum or on social media requires very little vulnerability. You managed to do it here on WWC. So give it a try! 

Anyway, my question basically amounts to the what is and isn't ok [sic] in terms of depicting fantasy creatures and concepts outside of their respective culture.

R: So, the reason why we turn away rubber stamp questions by that ask “is XYZ okay?” is because “okay” & “not okay” 1) is vague and 2) creates a dichotomy where there isn’t one. 

When we say something is “not okay,” do we mean:

It’s offensive to the general majority of XYZ group? 

It’s contentious among people who ID in the group? 

It has a potential to be interpreted in a certain negative way, but may not be a red flag to everyone?

Insetad try asking:

What are the reasons this subject is offensive? 

What makes cultural appropriation bad? 

When might it be “okay” to intentionally discuss a difficult or controversial topic?

What is your reason for including something that may be interpreted as offensive and can it be sufficiently justified? 

What stereotypes or tropes might it be consistently identified as or associated with, and why? 

When might it be justified to bring up these tropes?

With That In Mind...

Let’s get into the rest of the ask below. 

…a story I've been working on in recent times is largely inspired off the Japanese yokai, and the setting is basically Earth in the far future, as far as when the next supercontinent may form. These yokai, although portrayed differently here, do retain their main characteristics [...] Included in this world are two goddesses of my own creation, primarily representing the sun and the moon. [...] There will be thirteen nations, named and based after the Chinese Zodiac, and the life force found in the living things in this world, called qi, comes in two forms that are always opposing each other but can never fully overpower the other, this being based off yin and yang. They're even directly named this; yin qi and yang qi.

M: This reads more like using Japanese and Chinese culture for the “aesthetics”, not the cultures themselves, which I personally feel falls under cultural appropriation. From a world-building/ coding standpoint, the actual use of concepts is workable, and, dare I say, typical, given how Chinese cosmology influences Japanese culture. However, naming a concept “yin qi” or “yang qi” is the equivalent of naming something “- charge” or “+ charge”, respectively. That you don’t seem aware of this tells me you are pretty early in your research phase. In that vein, we’ve covered translating terms and names from foreign languages in fantasy before. See the following article linked here for our recommendation against using RL terms outright but instead encouraging people to create their own conlangs. 

R: Worldbuilding-wise, I think you would have to figure out the chicken-or-egg of the zodiac nations. Did the nations come first, and the zodiac later as an origin folk story (which you would have to rewrite to serve the nation-building narrative)? Did the zodiac come first, and the nations named (most likely re-named) by a political entity? What is the justification? Otherwise, again, it’s a shoehorning of aesthetics. 

There is also a third, lesser known god based off of fox spirits and trickery and I imagined he's the patron deity of a family that honors and worships him, but his influence on them has transformed them into Kitsune-tsuki, which I depict as fox-like anthros. 

M: Not related to this ask directly, but I have jokingly ranted about how often non-Japanese people prefer using imagery related to kitsune-tsuki in Japanese coded world-building (link). This makes me feel the same level of petty irritation. See my troll answer below for a similar experience.

R: Same. It’s boring tbh. 

M: Troll Answer: I get that kitsune-tsuki are very sexy furries, but Japanese folklore has other sexy furries too! These underrepresented demographics also deserve recognition and appreciation!!

The plot of the story is this; modernization has left the goddesses neglected of their worship and forgotten, something that is necessary in this world to stop them from fighting each other. The Moon Goddess awakens first, punishing the humans by unleashing the yokai. Then the Sun Goddess wakes up to fight in humanity's defense…

M: This could feel rather like Shinto-like coding (Ex. the myth of Amaterasu and the Cave, or Tsukuyomi slaying Ukemochi), but something about this scenario feels a bit too binary in terms of themes of good v. evil, light v. dark to be Shinto. The plot also feels more Gaelic/ Nordic in influence for me as a person raised in a Japanese Buddhist and Hindu household. I imagine this dissonance could have been fixed with better guided research. 

…but their fighting has caused a perma-eclipse and this world is in danger of ending. The yokai have run rampant; some are loyal to the Moon Goddess, and some aren't, and it lies to the main characters to bring balance back to Midgard. Yeah... the name of this future Earth is Midgard. I debate changing it since it and some other things I will mention sorta feel out of place.

R: Marika, looks like you were right on the Gaelic/Nordic influence /j 

Also, worldbuilding question: if the Earth is in the far geologic future, how long has it been since modernization (19th-20th century)? Centuries? Millennia? How long has this fighting gone on for? What triggered the perma-eclipse, and why now? Why is this time depth necessary? 

One of the main characters in question is a humanoid woman with wolf features named Ling, and she is a descendant of the dynasty that had first ruled the one of the nations, particularly the one based off the dragon zodiac. She accidentally summons the other main character to this world as she's praying at a shrine, a humanoid with dragon features--I call them drakon--named Angelynn.

[on the names of characters] is it appropriating by not having the world entirely based on [Chinese, Japanese, and Indian] influence? it's a little weird to me how worldwide the creatures are referred to as yokai, implying a strong Japanese influence not unlike how it is today with Western culture being so dominant, yet there are still names like Keith and Kiara.

M: I will give you credit for recognizing you have unconsciously veered towards white-washing/ race-bending: either presenting European cultural influences (drakons, Angelynn, Keith, Kiara, Midgard) as default or utilizing general E. Asian cultural influences and aesthetics for a Western-style story (Ling, qi, Chinese zodiac, yokai). I agree with you that this creates a sense of cultural dissonance. At this point, I’d say you have a clear choice: write a Western-style high fantasy using a background with which you have more familiarity, or get some better guidance on research with East Asian cultures so you can code the story more effectively. 

The focus of this story is centered around meeting all these yokai and showing that there's more nuance to them than Ling believes, all while saving the world. But I worry if I'm appropriating these concepts and creatures by 1, drawing from more than one culture--I initially imagined that there would be a mix of Chinese, Japanese and Indian influence because according to a website I am getting the info on yokai from, the yokai in question already draw inspiration from or have been based on something in Chinese mythology or Hinduism [...]

R: Sure, some yokai have Chinese or Hindu parallels as that tends to happen with folk tales. But not all–some are unique to Japan, and some are more modern. Sometimes it’s very political–some people consider the Ainu Korpokkur as being a “Yokai of Japan” despite it belonging to the indigenous culture. It’s up to you to research, untangle, and understand these influences. 

The fact that you bring up that the Asian continent has seen a lot of cultural exchange is not a sufficient reason to randomly combine influences for the sake of visual appeal or “coolness.” That is appropriation. These influences must be understood in their historical context so that you know how/why certain things combined or morphed into another, and what makes sense to combine/morph. 

M: This also indicates that the character views the yokai as evil/inherently bad, which I would argue is not a typical stance for much Japanese folklore. Again, this shows a deficit in research. 

2, reimagining these yokai in a new context even though I have done the research on them, because one thing I kept seeing in regards to cultural appropriation is that it's bad to do that […]

R: Refer above to my note on “okay” and “not okay.” The thing with folklore and fairy tales is that every–and I mean every–folk tale is reinterpreted with every new iteration of it. Reimagining in a new context is what people do every time they pass on a story or tell a story with the same plot or characters. Do not think of folklore as an “original” that is altered and rebooted, but rather a living document that gets added to. Reimagining is not the inherent issue. HOW you reimagine something matters. 

So I suppose my question is...if someone were to do research upon the creature they want to use, given they are allowed to use it, and gained an understanding of what the creature or concept stood for, are they allowed to pick it apart and reimagine it? Alternatively, is it ok if it's explicitly pointed out that it is derivative of the original?

It has actually become my biggest fear that I may have internalized something that could both continue to do harm long after the fact and attract the wrong people to me work. I don't wanna let people down!

M: As Rina has noted several times, I think the problem is in trying to ID a set of specific variables and circumstances that make a thing “okay” or “not okay.” I want to recommend that you read my joking response about writing in secret rooms while wearing a disguise (Linked here). Who can you hurt if no one knows what you are doing? There’s a difference between creating for oneself and creating to share. 

You have internalized a message incorrectly, but not the one you cite. The goal of many recommendations against cultural appropriation is to avoid causing direct harm to people who have seen their cultures demeaned, discredited and devalued, especially in shared spaces. Assessing cultural engagement, whether we are talking about appropriation, appreciation or exchange is not a measure of personal virtue or a collection of commandment style do’s and don’t’s. Rather, I believe engaging with other cultures is the state of mind of acknowledging that when using these cultures’ in one’s own work, there is value in consulting members of that culture and giving credit where credit is due. This will be challenging if you are only comfortable engaging with all of these cultures in a distanced, minimal capacity. 

FWIW, I’ve written stories that probably will offend people from other cultures and backgrounds, but I don’t show them off. I don’t think writing these makes me a bad person, but I also don’t see the need to give unnecessary offense, so those stories are just for me, to be written and read in my own secret room. However, I’m not ashamed of having written them, and I’m also comfortable to “let people down” provided that my own shared work reflects my personal principles of what I consider to be sufficient research and engagement with other cultures,  As a creator, my work wouldn’t be mine if I didn’t first please myself. I think the trick to the creator role is deciding what to keep private, what to share and what constitutes sufficient engagement.

Hey yall. I'm Kriese (aka Keira, aka 4 Pings: explanation of that one here). I am a former friend of Poppy and Zena's going back to Spring 2021, and I was an Archon (Moderator) of The Foundation starting around Fall 2021. I would not say I was their closest friend; but we shared secrets and they trusted me. I trusted them, too.

A lot happened in between then and now, and I have shared some of that publicly since coming out against them. I have decided to update my previous master post in order to change it from just listing the published documents to instead be a cataloging of what I feel are important or relevant statements, either here on Tumblr or on Twitter. A lot has happened very quickly in the past several months, and it is not all organized.

It occurred the night after he made his original public callout post on Twitter. We asked each other to keep our conversation a secret. I wanted his perspective on a few things. We didn't speak again until after I left The Foundation.

My First Signed Anonymous Ask to Heloise. This was done in response to Poppy posting my private DMs between myself and her after she dropped into my DMs while I was working.

Followup to That First anonymous Ask Much Later as Myself. In this I better explain what was going on around that time, why I believe Poppy reached out to me, and why I reacted the way I did.

A Signed Anonymous Ask to Heloise Calling Out Poppy Continually Using Spawn's Preferred Name. I was frustrated with Poppy not protecting peoples' identities when she herself should understand what it meant to be doxxed. This was an expression of that feeling.

I Discuss Not Wanting to Take Away What The Foundation has Meant to Others. As it became clear I would be speaking out in the future, I wanted it to be clear that just because I had issues with Zena and Poppy that should not take away from what support and community others had found there. My Offer to Talk to Anyone on Discord. Poppy initially vaguetweeted about me reaching out to Chem and Naomi, which prompted me to send Heloise this signed anonymous ask. Poppy decided to just called me out directly on Twitter afterwards. For what it's worth, I never spoke to Chem, and my interaction with Naomi was just sharing the Spawn 1 doc.

Discussion of What Lead to Me Leaving The Foundation. I sent this as a signed anonymous ask to Heloise in preparation of Luxander's stream and the publication of Abusive Hypocrites 2.

I Reiterate I Never Wanted Poppy to Lose Her Job. This is why I had my final fight in Archon.

My Explanation of the 4 Pings Meme Poppy Made About Me. On March 22nd, Poppy created a bunch of memes about a statement I made during my final argument in Archon chat before leaving The Foundation. This is my explanation of it.

Dear Witcher fandom! As members of the same community, we would like to warn you about an individual who had been harassing and bullying multiple members of the fandom, artists and otherwise, for several months now.

Her name is Marina, she goes by MarinaMart, MarinaKD MarinaMKD29 and many variations of thereof. She's active on here, on Instagram, on Twitter and Reddit and if you don't wish to be harassed and bullied, I highly recommend blocking any url that vaguely resembles that name. Her current URL is @marinamd29

Her handle on Reddit is MarinaKD29, and on Twitter it's MartMarina29. She doesn't behave any different on these platforms, and there are some screenshots of her behavior on these platform in the folder, as well.

She ships Vernon Roche with Ciri and if you create content, reblog content or even like content of either of these characters being shipped with someone other than each other (but especially wlw ships for ciri and mlm ships for roche), you have a chance to receive harassment, both anonymous and otherwise.

She has an obvious bias towards queer couples, constantly spewing homophobic remarks on both her twitter and her blog. Some screenshots of that are available in the folder.

People she's harassed so far include, but are not limited to: @bookcalanthedaily , @calamari-kestis, @sebdoeswords, @xejune, @lakka-arts, @tallfroggie and many more. Most notably however, Froggie is a TEEN whom Marina sent unsolicited sexually explicit GIFs of her ship.

HERE is a full Google Folder including TENS of screenshots with the proof of her continued harassment, including anonymously submitted stories. They are NOT organized, because there is just so many. To add to that, there is Marina's harassment of people on Reddit and Twitter, that I have only included a couple of, but I am happy to provide more to anyone who asks.

Important!! DO NOT fall for her false narrative. None of us have harassed her for her ship. None of us have even interacted with her first (except for myself, when it was brought to my attention a design for a book character was copied from me and I politely requested credit for inspiration she took from my design) and we do NOT 'cancel her' for her ship. All of us were just creating/enjoying ships we like and it is her the harassment comes from.

FAQ:

Why make this post?

Because she's been given a chance to rectify her behavior over and over again. It became apparent, that she has been doing it to multiple people, multiple smaller communities within the Witcher fandom and over multiple platform. She is NOT changing.

Why not block her?

We have! She continues making new blogs, sending messages anonymous and otherwise going around the block to continue her harassment.

Why not ignore her?

We have! For months! Recent events have just been a straw that broke the camel's back.

Why have some of you been rude to her?

We admit, some of us didn't act very kindly towards Marina; it has been a response to watching her harass other people, often our friends, within the fandom. We do not claim to be completely crystal clear. But it has only ever been as a reaction to her bad behavior. Please note, that in no instance were we ever the ones to reach out to her first, or interact with her blog in any way, shape or form.

I read your documents and compared the designs and your own behavior. I don't think any of this is worth a callout. I would also suggest revising your hagspawn lore and design. It's antisemitic. Isn't intended to be a threat or harassment. Be mindful of evil bloodlines and big noses. Also I think the design change makes them less similar and if you collabed on the character you both get a version of him. Also your SO having parents part of Q-Anon is concerning for LGBT+ people

Genuine response:

For one good job saying "I did not read your hagspawn" without actually saying it. The lore of the hagspawn clearly details how they are not innately evil. They do possess some character traits that can be both toxic but also empowering and uplifting all depending on how they choose to act on them. The entierty of the lore discribes them in a sympathetic light with an innate plothook in form of their typically evil mothers. But naturally you can't see past the large nose which as a reason to call antisemitism is on very shakey grounds.

For the second half of this ask: Also #1) No they didn't change much. They changed the character's eyes and changed their "legal name" while still keeping their calling name. It's not distinct at all, plus I am allowed to voice disapproval if a person who abused my SO, my friend, and myself uses my character.

Also #2) Me, my SO, their brother, and their brothers husband are all LGBT+ folk. Plus the situation is more complicated than that. May I point you towards my SO's statement and documentation of the crap Crowbar put them through as well as my SO's and my relationship with their parents and our struggles with their conspiracy shenanigans? Here you go. It might help you to not grossly oversimplify a complex problem.

seeing some posts recently that might not necessarily mention him by name but are basically implying that james somerton is getting the "lolcow" treatment and he should be left alone at this point. which is a take that I agree with in spirit, I personally have no desire to hear more about this guy and have no reason to now that all the shit he did is basically just out in the open. but I also feel the need to point out that the only reason we're still hearing about him this many months after he was exposed is that he manipulatively tried to get people to believe he killed himself or was serious about killing himself in response to the effective and rightful implosion of his media career. and the main reason that people who either knew him personally, professionally, or took it upon themselves to expose his fraud continued to "keep tabs" on him was to gather evidence that could be used to counter the "driven to suicide" narrative that he was spinning to try and garner sympathy. I think if you exposed someone's fraud and it resulted in consequences for their career, and then they played the victim and threatened to kill themselves over being exposed (remember this is someone who is known for lying and spinning shaky narratives that paint himself as a victim), you would also hope that it was just a tactic to get people to feel sorry for him and try and look for evidence of what was actually going on. at this point I do think it would be best for everyone involved if he was allowed to fade into obscurity and could just make his dumb media theory posts on socials anonymously without people trying to track his online presence. but I don't blame anyone who was involved with the callout or his media brand for looking for evidence that the suicide threat was a manipulation tactic or smoke and mirrors or whatever you want to call it

I wasn't kidding you when I said check the Faces of Nothing blog. You can literally check Mobox87's blog for OCs that were sold but I legit cannot go through all of it since this thread will only go longer than it should with just too many screenshots of characters that got sold.

I can still confirm for a fact that Miles is still buying OCs off of Mobox87 to this day since he's the only one buying them anonymously besides Blurry for his own reasons why. Like it doesn't surprise me that Miles is still supporting Mobox87 from buying whatever character she sells because regardless of him knowing that Mobox drew Child Pornography, glorification of fascism and torture porn. He's still going to support her with his own money going directly to her account.

Now despite Miles settling down after getting called out. It would take until like a few months for him to start acting up again.

This time he went after an artist named Yuriviq on DeviantArt over a drawing of the oc named Vinsnake being shipped with this artist's OC. So, you already know I was going to say something.

Plus, wanna know what I really found very aggravating about this issue. It was not the fact that he accused Yuriviq of stealing an OC which the artist didn't know he owned but it shouldn't matter. It's the fact that he dragged Mobox87 into this drama for her to repost on her Instagram story a callout to Yuriviq saying that she stole the OC Vinsnake just because Miles claimed she stole it.

Here's the thread responding to Miles stupid complaints about Vinsnake being shipped with the Yuriviq's oc.

So, I did strike back at Miles again with not one but two drawings at him as insults for being a drama queen. The left drawing would be posted on the thread and the right post would be shared as its own post.

This of course got him back into my dm's to complain again but what made it worse was the fact he kept spamming his tantrums in Cagney's dms and Kevonica's dms about my response posts. Cagney wanted me to take down the posts against Miles since he woke him up very early in the morning with his complaints but I refused to do so since it would enable his toxic behavior still.

Now it would've settled down again but Miles wanted to try to get the upper hand by claiming Vinsnake is underage at the last minute so he can make it seem like I drew Child porn.

Like for one, Miles never announced or shared that Vinsnake would be 16 years old publicly until I drew an ahegao face on him. Secondly, Vinsnake is just William Afton that is part snake from his lower torso and William Afton is canonically in his 30s which is how Mobox87 originally attended him to be and I stuck with that. Just like how Miles stuck with that til he wanted to cope harder by changing him to 16 years old right on the spot so he can label me as a pedo then compare me to Mobox87 for that.

EDIT: As the original callout, this first draft was constructed in a way meant to be as neutrally approached as possible. In it are offered possible explanations and rationale, as well as errors on Anon/A's part. The one after this was written with far less patience and in a much shorter manner.

I am going to attempt post this in an objective way, in an effort to not obfuscate events or put my bias into this. This is meant to be informative and for the reader to draw their own conclusions.

I hope you will understand why names in this are anonymized, and should the people it is about read this, the anonymous person hopes anonymity is respected. They do not feel this is an unreasonable request due to the events described. This person does not want to be known or talked about, they do not want people to think of these events as associated with them. Lastly, if outside parties are able to identify the anonymous person through context, a keen eye, or other methods, please do not disclose who they are.

As a result, this is also being posted on an anonymous account, associated with nobody. It will not be checked once this post is up. There will be no arguing or responses from this account. This post will be archived online as a safety measure.

This post primarily is about @/Hydrabones (dA, TH, twitter, etc) and secondarily about Tumblr user @/chimericade AKA @/deathpoker AKA @/wildeornes, whose username on Toyhouse was mindbite but is now SALIERI. Nell also used to be @/iwannapushyourdaisies. Hydrabones in particular has a habit of rebranding often.

This will be documenting a cycle of abuse and control Hydrabones/Icarus has engaged in for years, which can largely be exemplified in this screenshot:

To be absolutely clear, only one report on these incidents has ever been filed online. However it resolves will be up to the moderators of that site, and their decision will be respected. The majority of these events took place before the website existed, and does not involve any content on that website. Due to the nature of what this contains, I would like to content warn for the following that will either be implied or implicit within this post:

The party that was hurt by these events will simply be called "Person A." The other parties will be referred to by their online names, "Icarus" and "Nell." Nell has also gone by "Hike" and "Hiaka" in the past. Legal names will come up but will, without question, be completely and entirely censored. Person A has asked to be referred to by they/them, and all parties have had pronouns change throughout the years. Icarus has changed names and usernames many times over this time period, with their most recent ones having been Reidoo, Icarusis, Planetsrings, and Hydrabones. Should you put any of these in as deviantArt usernames, they all will redirect you to Hydrabones.

In addition to these, older usernames included Xrie, Arkyjohn, Arkyoni, Dingohugs, Nezizzle, Zuruzukin, Clockworkinside, Reidobiwa, Shadowbeast, Kabutops, and Uranus, among others that were not recalled or relevant. Aside from xrie, these were all usernames they had on Tumblr. The blog(s) associated with these have been summarily deactivated, and the new owners of "Kabutops" and "Uranus" or any of the others are unrelated parties.

If a first name is left uncensored, it is safe to assume that it is either Hydrabones, or an OC (This will be generally easy to determine and differentiate via context when viewing screenshots and logs linked here as evidence.)

Person A wanted to handle this as privately as they could. However, after an extremely rapid decline in their health, they feel they can't be silent any longer about what they've experienced.

Please note:

Person A has persistent amnesia regarding the events between 2011 and 2021, much of what is recalled here was done through seeking out conversations, photos, or vent posts they had at the time.

It is noteworthy in the interest of presenting these events objectively that this has not been diagnosed yet, though Person A plans to see a neurologist in the very near future. Much of the below had to be learned by looking through their own archives. It was not just bad memories that were lost, many good ones were absent as well. What has been definitely diagnosed is the following: c-PTSD, OCD, depression, anxiety. Person A's OCD manifests mainly as moral scrupulousity, which intensified as the circumstances became impossibly complex.

Person A, being autistic, has an interest in preserving media and memories. This ranges from old documents, old files, old photos, archives, so on and so forth. As a result, evidence of these events stretches all the way back to 2011, starting here on Tumblr. It spanned conversational programs such as Skype and Discord, and eventually moved into real life and physical interaction. There is less evidence for real life incidents due to the nature of it, as well as Person A being largely restricted from venting about these events for reasons and in ways that will be detailed in this post.

For background context: Person A is a domestic abuse survivor, being the victim of their terminally ill mother. Their primary support before meeting Icarus was their father, who spent those years caring for her at the end of her life. It is additionally worth noting that in coercing Person A to move to Australia, Icarus effectively removed Person A from their own support system and strongest familial bond. Regardless of intent, this was indicative of a severe worsening of the patterns of victim isolation that will be detailed below.

Person A was born in October of 1996 and is a permanent resident of the United States. In July of 2011, they were 14 years old, a similar age to Icarus's younger sister. Icarus, on the other hand, was born in March of 1993, a permanent resident of Australia. It is noted that in most or all of Icarus's social media profiles that their age is entirely redacted or not present, instead listed vaguely as "adult." Icarus was 18 years old in July of 2011. They will be turning 30 in 2023. Here is reference to Icarus's age, since it is not listed on their public profiles. [link]

On July 3rd, 2011, Icarus asked out Person A, to which Person A was receptive. At the age of 18, Icarus entered a romantic relationship with Person A, age 14. [link]

The reason they began dating was due to RP shipping between Pokemon characters, named Kyran "Ky" Garret and P[redacting entire name]. This began on an Oekaki board that contained a Pokemon RP system run by users. Person A and Icarus joked about them copying their OCs by dating. [link]

These characters were regularly in sexual scenarios both OOC and on IC roleplay blogs. More than once, Person A had explicit pornography submitted to them, while Icarus drew the characters engaging in sexual acts. [link 1] [link 2]

Aside from Icarus, all of Person A's past and present online friends have since acknowledged that this was not okay behavior to encourage. However, Person A also recognizes that the culture of the internet was different 10-12 years ago, with edgy and offensive humor along with extremely inappropriate behavior from adults. While this is NOT a minimization of the harm done or dangers of these behaviors and the things they normalized, it is an unfortunate reality that can be best exemplified in the sheer number of stories like this one of varying severities, comparable or otherwise.

While this should not have happened, the culture of Tumblr used to be one where far more was allowed to slide. There were "body positivity" events where both Person A and Icarus posted suggestive images of themselves, encouraged by the people they were around. Comments about "lolicon/shotacon" and sexual behavior towards minors was egregiously common. That being said, Icarus was alerted to this age difference being a problem on the very first day they got together, and again later on. Because Icarus has deleted their blog, all that remains are responses from Person A's blog. Please note, this was from a time before Tumblr asks could be reblogged. Person A responded by taking offense to what had been said. [link]

Here are excerpts of extremely sexual behavior from Icarus, from Person A's blog, in which the format has unfortunately broken over the years. Red highlighted will denote what Icarus has said, while blue will be Person A.

*Boku no Pico is a shotacon hentai. It depicts graphic sex with characters who are explicitly children. One could, and should, consider it animated pornographic depictions of children and treat it will all the severity that entails -- regardless of whether or not it was an edgy 'meme' in some circles due to the shock value of such revolting media.

These interactions met their logical end in Person A creating disturbing scenarios to discuss with Icarus while underage and for Person A to relate the above content to themself.

In November of 2011, Icarus called Person A (now 15 years old) their fiance. It was not the first time marriage was referred to, and it was not the last. [link]

Though Icarus has identified as asexual for a long time, it does not erase what happened. Whether or not Icarus still identifies as asexual is unknown to the party writing this or to Person A. When being informed of certain events, Nell allegedly rejected that Icarus could ever be predatory due to an apparent fear or repulsion to sex. Icarus has shown an apparent disregard for legality in the past, and despite Person A knowing it was wrong, the barriers had already been broken down. [link]

With the culture of Tumblr changing rapidly between 2011 and 2012, Icarus eventually stopped making suggestive or inappropriate comments in public. Person A has no way to access old Skype logs where there may have been more.

In addition, in 2012, Icarus attempted to meet with Person A in Las Vegas on their trip to the USA. They never managed to meet up due to poor connection. Person A was 15 years old. [link]

Regardless of sexual identity, Icarus had been making constant sexual comments up until this event.

Just a year later, a Tumblr user they both knew "J****-****" was caught in possession of CSEM, some of which belonged to Person A. Person A had been coerced into sharing nude pictures with this user. This Tumblr user was at or around Icarus's age when she was caught with it and called out. No action on their relationship was taken.

This would not be the only adult to sexually take advantage of Person A as a result of continually justifying dating Icarus. Person A's mental health suffered from what had happened. They were institutionalized and then sexually abused once more while in the hospital.

In 2014, after Josh Macedo (confusedtree) was called out for sexting underage girls, Person A realized that the same had been happening to them again. The user was a friend of both them and Icarus, named "K***." K*** was at least the same age as Icarus. Once again, Icarus did not act on the problematic nature of their relationship.

In 2014, Icarus got Person A into adoptables. Person A joined Toyhouse in October of 2014, just after they had turned 18 and were now, in the eyes of the law, an "adult." Due to parental abuse and neglect, Person A now feels that they were not at the maturity consistent with an adult, continuing to justify their relationship both to themself and to others. Person A had dropped out of school, was developmentally delayed, could not cook, could hardly clean, and could not drive. They spent most of their days holed up in their bedroom hiding, but managed to get their GED during 2015.

By that point, Icarus and Person A had been together for four years. Icarus had, in this period, been presented with more than enough evidence of wrongdoing, external perspective, criticism, and pressure to be well aware that their relationship was inappropriate. There is no 'I didn't know better' excuse that can be made when the inappropriate relationship endured 4 years of consistent questioning, as well as numerous breakups and opportunities to do the right thing and break things off permanently.

Person A did not see any red flags despite having a large amount unaddressed of anxiety about it, which they attribute to romantic relationships with adults having been normalized in their life. Icarus was fully aware of Person A's neglect and lack of life skills.

They officially met in person in late 2015. Person A travelled (without Icarus's help, for transparency) to Australia to visit. [link]

Person A had their 19th birthday over there, and Icarus's mother seemed uncomfortable to let them sleep in the same bed, instead having Person A sleep in their younger brother's bed while he was away. Inevitably, they would go to Icarus's bedroom regardless. The conversation about moving over there permanently was becoming very serious, and Person A moved to Australia to go to University with Icarus in early 2016. The following are events that took place in real life and, as such, have limited amounts of evidence.

Person A holds no animosity towards Icarus's family members. They are thankful to them for making their situation more bearable.

Moving over there ended up becoming a sunk-cost scenario in Person A's eyes. Even when they started to see problems with their living situation, they felt an immense amount of guilt over the idea of quitting their education partway through. Person A's father was the one putting them through school and they wanted to do right by that due to the amount of money it would end up costing. Additionally, Person A regarded Icarus as having "saved their life" due to getting them out of a household where their mother was actively threatening and abusing them. They felt indebted to Icarus and dependency would keep them tethered for four years. Considering it wrong to leave, Person A would fall into a deep depression, trapped in what they considered a hell of their own making. Person A continually would blame themself for this, even now.

For the next several paragraphs, please be cautioned that there is sexual assault discussed.

Just three months later, in May of 2016, Icarus's real life friend Tora invited them both over to play an online FPS shooter together. The trio had been flirting with the idea of a polyamorous relationship for a few weeks. Tora and Icarus were school friends, self-described by Icarus as having known each other for eleven years. They were around the same age, both at roughly 23 years old at the time. Due to not knowing when Tora's birthday was, there is no way to accurately know her exact age. Alcohol was brought out, which Person A had never interacted with before. Person A was on medication that increased the effects of the alcohol.

During the night, Icarus left the room for a significant amount of time. Tora and Person A were on the bed, and Person A was sexually assaulted. They were visibly confused and upset when Icarus entered the room, prompting them both to call Icarus's mother and request she come get them. Tora got upset and threw some keyrings, which Person A does not recall.

In June, Person A went to the police to make a statement after being advised by multiple parties. This had been advised by a psychiatrist quite a distance away, and a local therapist that Icarus brought them to. Person A was deemed unwell enough to be institutionalized, expressing delusional behavior about "infestations" and "fornication." They refused to be institutionalized, and Icarus verbally argued with the psychiatrist, having sat in the room with them to offer support. Person A does not recall the therapy session and did not go back. The report can be found below, in addition to a conversation Icarus had with someone else about the incident.

Much has been redacted due to the graphic nature, as well as legal names. Tora identified as a trans woman at the time, but was not out, and as such was referred to with differing pronouns. Whether or not she still identifies is again, unknown, to Person A.

It has been brought to their attention that Icarus has claimed that the assault happened to them.

As you can see from signed testimony above, this was not the case. Icarus felt guilty for having left the room, an understandable reaction. There were 4 pages of testimony total but I do not believe sharing the sensitive details of the sexual assault will aid anyone.

It is not known why Icarus talked about being a lesbian when they were in a relationship with Person A at the time of the assault, who at no point in real life interactions identified as a woman.

This ends the section on the sexual assault. This was the 4th time since meeting Icarus that Person A had been taken advantage of by someone far older than them. Three of the people who had taken advantage of Person A were people Icarus had known.

Around this time in mid to late 2016, Person A joined a dA RP group. Icarus followed Person A to the group with the intention to be in the same sub-group, but by miscommunication, they ended up in separate sub-groups (existing for the purpose of scheduling and storytelling.) The new group noticed Icarus's behavior and came to their own conclusions about them independently of Person A, while Person A finally met people who did not already know Icarus. These people became friends who later reached out to Person A to support them.

During this, Person A was stuck mediating adoptable drama for four 'bigger' adopt artists and Icarus. Afterwards, neither of the two arguing groups were friends, and Icarus was friends with none of them. This put Person A in an awkward spot, wanting to remain friends with these people. Icarus was disapproving of continuing to speak to any of them, leading Person A to largely withdraw. The artists involved are not named here out of respect for their privacy; if they wish to come forward that is up to them.

Person A would turn to online friends for help, opening the gate to venting in private about their increasingly stressful living situation. When they were caught venting, they were immediately confronted and punished. Icarus cast immense doubt on Person A for speaking to one of the aforementioned artists they had argued with.[link]

Blaming Person A for "turning people against them" or "taking their friends away" was routine for Icarus. Over time, this became the tone Icarus took whenever any information painted them in an unflattering light, and this further isolated Person A and disallowed them the space to safely process their feelings. When Person A asked others if they were in any way negatively or unfairly influencing their perception of Icarus, they were universally assured this was not the case. [link]

Regardless of reassurances, Person A still internalized it and struggled to morally justify why they needed to externalize their feelings. This has resulted in Person A feeling immense guilt even discussing that something happened to them at all, and they still struggle to hold others accountable for wrongs against them, immediately pivoting toward the guilt and fear instilled in them. Person A routinely attempts to justify Icarus's mistreatment of them, and often minimizes and even actively denies their own emotions, believing that any upset on their end is their fault, and that they must apologize for being upset in the first place. This trauma response often triggers severe panic attacks in Person A, who struggles with having been conditioned by these behaviors to take fault for the things others do to them.

In February 2017, Person A took a break from dating Icarus. Icarus did not respond well to being in a 'relationship limbo' or to the subsequent decision made to call it off. The following messages directly led to Person A attempting suicide by leaving the house and overdosing. This has had permanent effects on their health. [link]

Icarus texted Person A while they were outside overdosing. Person A responded angrily. [link]

An online friend of Person A could see that something was wrong and encouraged them to return home.

This kind person's intervention saved Person A's life.

They blacked out and woke up in the hospital. Icarus had posted to social media that Person A was in the ER without Person A's knowledge or consent. Icarus would later joke about their erratic behavior from during their unconsciousness, citing it as "coping." Person A wrote down what they could remember directly following the suicide attempt.

Despite this suicide attempt, Icarus was continually unhelpful when Person A expressed feeling suicidal afterwards. These attacks would normally happen at night. Icarus brushed them off consistently, going back to sleep. When Icarus did not brush Person A off, comfort was conflated being hurt.

At the same time in 2017, the decision was made to take in a cat that had lost its home from tragic circumstances next door. Person A found that the cat was pregnant, and it had four kittens. Both Person A and Icarus attempted to not get attached to these kittens and failed, adding to the general level of stress. Icarus said they did not want to be "the bad guy," a sentiment that would get repeated. Icarus would also bring up their break-up and plans they had for the future, despite the irrelevancy to the kitten situation.

There was a significant amount of strain in the household between Icarus's mother and Icarus/Person A. Person A was not allowed to vent about this despite Icarus having vented about Person A's mother. The arguments and fighting led to a desire to leave. In addition, there was a domestic incident of no one's fault that scared everyone in the household.

Icarus did not assist with apartment searching, or signing application forms, or handing them in despite Person A not having a vehicle. Icarus also actively discouraged Person A from leaving, despite having started an online fundraiser through Tumblr with the intent to leave. Person A ended up finding accommodations that worked for them alone, but still Person A was given reason after reason to not leave.

During this time, Person A had started a long distance relationship with someone who lived back in the United States. Icarus repeatedly hinted that they wanted to be in a polyamorous relationship and began to bring up having sex more. Eventually, Person A relented and they got back together. Person A found the timing odd since they were still in the process of leaving.

Person A moved out on their own to the discontent of Icarus, who was hurt and betrayed by the decision. Once Person A had moved into their new home, Icarus brought up sex again. Person A did not feel attracted to Icarus in this way, and Icarus's response to that was to ask, "Do you love me?" This was the deal breaker for their relationship.

Icarus's asexuality had been consistent until this point. Icarus immediately began to identify as a lesbian following the break-up and retroactively called themself one for times when they dated Person A. Person A is transmasculine, and does not identify as a woman now or ever.

In late 2017 to early 2018, Person A returned to the US for the holidays. While in the US, Icarus illegally opened Person A's mail and became upset that they had received compensation for the sexual assault but Icarus hadn't. Icarus would later get compensation. Having been stressed both about this and about being left on read in their private server, Person A quietly left the server to opt for DMs temporarily. Icarus responded by deleting the entire server. This server was where screencaps in which Icarus's name in red originated from. A lot of arguments and toxic behavior were lost with the deletion.

Come 2018, Icarus invited Person A to a DND group they were running, where Person A met their partner, Nell, and another person (a minor at the time) that would later be harmed by Icarus's actions. This would fall out very messily, with Icarus pitting everyone against that person. During the ensuing arguments, Icarus lied to make the minor look worse by claiming he was "stalking" and "keeping tabs on" Person A and their partner, crafting a narrative of obsession. Shortly after, Person A would move back in to Icarus's home. When Person A tried to move on and join another DND campaign, they were told they were causing hurt for themself and others. [link]

Despite having permission to share messages of the above DND fallout, they will be used sparingly. This post is not here to tell that person's story on his behalf, but Person A has reconciled with and fully supports him after having seen the similarities in Icarus's messages. That being said, Icarus denied the possibility that this minor was preyed upon by the adults in that DND group and refused to see evidence of it. This person was publicly smeared in a twitter thread for attempting to speak up about it. [link]

This manipulation, as well as its use to separate victims and prevent them from comparing the stories they have to tell, created years of conflict that was deeply traumatic for the involved parties, including convincing both sides that they were effectively stalking one another.

Due to the persistent nature of this trauma and how it endured up until very recently, this document will break from the established chronological order briefly to further describe it here so as to immediately follow the above mention of DND Fallout to ensure proper context when describing the social manipulation that was at play.

It is worth nothing that, despite Icarus and Nell's fervent denials of any wrongdoing by any parties other than the above unnamed individual and victim, Person A has since reconciled with said victim. They came to an understanding that regardless of intent, Person A's partner had harmed the above party as well as acted in ways that facilitated the abuse they were under from Nell and Icarus.

Person A's partner admitted their fault in this, and in doing so became aware of the wider scope of the manipulations of both Icarus and Nell.

Conversely, Nell still expresses fervent belief that the above mentioned victim is a liar. This is in line with Nell siding with Icarus, as well as the kind of NSFW content Nell exposed that minor to in and outside of DND. I would advise against viewing more recent web archives of the blog mentioned due to explicit gore; in the web archive link most of the images have since broken. The images are not broken in more recent ones.

When Person A namedropped Icarus for the first time in November of 2022, Nell sent these messages to Person A's partner. [link]

Nell was never willing to hear out Person A's anxieties that had been reawakened when Icarus got together with them. In the end, they prioritized their own "comfort" and "healing" over people they had once been friends with. [link]

This pattern of apologism for the abuses of their partner, as well as willingness to overlook behaviors of other parties that even they themselves have admitted were inappropriate and harmful makes it clear that self-preservation is a greater driving force than doing right by victims, and lead to severe falling outs that will be detailed below.

This document will now return to its format of chronological order.

Between 2018 and 2020, Person A was still not allowed to vent privately. Asking for advice had been and was still considered venting privately. They still tried to, attempting to hide it from Icarus, going so far as to link their private Twitter to a tool that would automatically delete tweets past a certain age. Person A, Icarus, and Icarus's sister were able to move into an apartment with the support of Icarus's parents. Person A had hoped that it had been environmental factors that had brought them so low but this did not alleviate any of the stress. Person A felt responsible for trying and failing to fairly divide household tasks, with general cleaning and reminding Icarus of their tasks becoming part of that responsibility.

Nell and Icarus got together during this time period. Person A's behavior became erratic as they struggled to warn Nell about what they had experienced without drawing Icarus's attention. Nell went to Icarus anyways. Person A was hurt and confused, pushing Nell away and eventually cutting them off. Person A would end up suicidal again, walking to the hospital down the road more than once and being treated coldly by Icarus for seeking that help. What was being "brought to the table" every few months was Person A unable to handle the toxic living environment in addition to having been groomed the way they had. [link]

It is worth noting in the compiler of this document and its documentation's eyes that Nell doesn't at any point deny the wrongdoing perpetuated by their partner, rather minimizing it through statements of character clearly undermined by their own bias (and clearly at odds with the evidence provided throughout this post), and offers the excuse that it was "long ago" and "over". Beyond the dismissal of the ongoing severe trauma that has had severe repercussions throughout Person A's life and haunts them to this date, this also shows an alarming disregard for the sheer morality of what was done.

The compiler of this document asks the reader to consider if they would be able to trust a partner if they learned their partner perpetuated the abuses described here, and that said partner had grossly misrepresented these facts to all parties involved, including the reader themself.

This hypothetical, hopefully, exemplifies why this excusal of Icarus' behavior is more than just 'choosing a side', and informs someone of Nell's character, especially in the context of their own abuses.

The final argument that Icarus and Person A had was in late 2020. Tweets from Person A's personal accidentally leaked through the reply function. They had been venting that they were afraid of Icarus becoming a vtuber because they were already planning to try to leave all of this behind when they left Australia. Person A did not want to risk stumbling across clips or fanart of them and their friends were attempting to reassure them.

CW: Self-harm: Icarus cornered Person A, causing them to snap and try to bash their head against the wall of the apartment in front of them and their sister. Icarus accused them of turning everyone against them once more. Their sister was also upset for this reason. Person A was in hysterics, offering to find a different place to live for the remainder of their time there to placate Icarus. Person A was forced under duress to admit that they were terrified of Icarus and finally said aloud that it was wrong of them to even gotten together. Icarus's sister went for a drive to clear her head.

One on one, Icarus asked Person A to promise they would not "call them out." Among the reasons cited were Icarus's sister's disability, with Icarus worried about the monetary hit they would take from this knowledge being made public. Person A promised in an attempt to make it stop. Icarus acknowledged their relationship as wrong but then justified it as "protecting" Person A. Icarus would later ask Person A in a car together while they were along if they were "still" scared of them, to which Person A lied and said no.

Much of the end of this friendship was filled with lies from Person A, who did not consider Icarus safe, let alone a friend. They would wait out getting out of the country to be honest about their feelings. Person A feels that they were being silenced and controlled, whether or not Icarus was doing so intentionally. Any apology Icarus had offered was meaningless to them due to this, and Person A feels as though this shows a lack of change.

Person A was able to leave in December of 2020 due to the remote learning options set up during COVID-19. They were a semester behind Icarus due to failing a course in their first year, but had otherwise taken the same exact classes with them for four years.

Person A would cut Icarus off in March of 2021. In December of 2021, they messaged Icarus's sister to swear they weren't planning to talk about it more. This promise was broken in November 2022 when Person A was re-traumatized through Icarus rejoining Tumblr, the place this had started. Person A did not learn Icarus was there until November, though they had been there for longer. [link]

Nell's above November messages were sent the day Person A realized Icarus was on Tumblr and had namedropped them both.

It was around this time that Person A was approached by and made amends with the other individual from the DND group. Person A compared experiences with him and he recalled that they had made a similar offer: move to Australia, go to school here. This document will not go further into his experience with Icarus, but this is the second minor Icarus attempted to coerce into moving to another country, isolated from their support systems.

While there is much more that could be said, this covers a lot of the most major parts of what Person A has experienced with as much evidence supporting it as possible. Much has been trimmed from this post for the sake of clarity and brevity. While much of this can be viewed as "he said, she said," they ask that you consider the broader picture. While Person A is not comfortable with comparing these incidents to human trafficking. However, their story mirrors the experience of trafficking victims up until the "exploitation" stage. Any time Icarus stated they could leave, there were simultaneously dozens of reasons thet could not, ranging from guilt, dependency, money, completion of their degree, and trauma.

Reiterating, please do not make Person A's identity known. Please do not approach this flippantly or as "internet drama."

Like Nell had claimed for themself, they are attempting to simply "live."

Person A strongly feels they can not live in good conscience without having it be known the behavior that Icarus and Nell have engaged in. Person A considers both of these people dangerous. Yet, they have had hang-ups about speaking up before this, believing that they are exaggerating the above events or twisting the story to make Icarus is the bad guy. The fear that they will hurt Icarus's family is one they struggle to move past. Given the gravity of the claims, they feel it would not be right to just sweep it all under the rug and fight to move on silently.

They thank you for reading their story and would like to end with something a friend of theirs said in comfort:

"When someone does something that impacts your life it becomes your story, not only theirs. Everyone's allowed to talk about their lives."

i don't really know if i can in good conscience agree with the last part, because there is functionally lots wrong with raising awareness in practice, because there's no way (especially in the culture that people have cultivated) to do it ethically, without causing a whole host of problems that we see today. so, i will give one example, there was a time a youtuber i am familiar with (as in, watched and had met) was just being cancelled for relationship drama (not abuse, i legitimately mean private relationship drama that is stupid to make public anyway), and i tweeted some basic advice in five to six tweets to him, completely without judgement or condemnation, and then later he made a video mocking the abuse he'd gotten as a result of the cancelling - it included a parody of me. took me longer than i'd like to admit to realise that i hadn't understood that it doesn't matter if you have gotten 10,000 nice messages in a day, 10,000 is and always will be enough messages to feel harassment from your perspective, and he was getting far more than that, and my thread wasn't being taken as nice messages that contrast the mean, but as additions.

there's also the social isolation that you endure next to the harassment, that isn't lessened by the fact it comes alongside millions of messages. and the fact that people lie, a lot, people get shit wrong, or teeny tiny exaggerations; really any attempt to raise those kinds of awareness will be taken advantage of as an easy way to isolate people from those who will very obviously want to isolate from somebody they think abused people, and as an extension people will then either believe everybody (and thus isolate anyone a bully or abuser asks them to) or dig for info, making personal lives of anyone accused by a bully hell in a different and similar way (still dehumanising to have people treating you like media to be analysed, and i think doubly problematic given nobody is actually a teeny tiny bit equipped to actually adequately do it, figure out who is guilty, or to do so without harming those involved, heck even the cops can't seem to be ethical in that regard). and that's not even getting to how suddenly everybody believes it's their right and moral imperative to decide what is right, who must change, what that change looks like, whether those people have met that standard, and if they deserve being put at risk and at the mercy of countless way more malicious strangers, and i just don't think it is your right to decide to sacrifice the safety of people because they haven't met your standards for being and/or changing into your standards of a good and moral person in your timeframe. there's making the polite disagreement on someone's post, and there's talking anonymously about being a survivor, and on occasion there's venting to a close friend who must be trustworthy to keep names a secret, but to make public callouts of even dumb relationship drama we usually would assume people could be chill about is dangerous, as with that youtuber and how much his whole world got turned into endless stress over that (let alone abuse allegations, a more emotive topic).

people don't even need to give a specific allegation, simply saying "they're abusive" is enough to cause a tonne of people to decide you're telling the truth, to harass the person, etc, no matter how much you say you're just trying to raise awareness and protect all potential future victims, and even when what little a person does provide seems sketchy or dubious, the act of saying so is taken as abuse apologia, and as i said, when it isn't, when people do accept the story could be less credible this time, the person either is forced to reveal a tonne of personal info, or has that info dug up. i'm reminded of the start of warmth by bastille, the "when the event happens, there is little time to think of those things that people would like to have remain private, getting caught up in the circus-like atmosphere, feeling less responsible to conventional ethical practices". i think this is simply unavoidable, no matter how much we appeal to the mob to be kind, it's always a mob, and it won't be.

i think the feelings of responsibility to strangers if a person hasn't met your standards of morality, even when demonstrable harm has occured, are not valid justification to put somebody in danger, and that is sticky because there obviously is still danger from a person who is causing harm, but that's why we have responsibility to change the systems that are there to protect people from danger, the systems that are supposed to keep dangerous people somewhere we can be sure they and others are safe, or the systems that figure out when somebody is lying to them as a way to frame an innocent person, rather than to act as though replacing those systems with mob rule is somehow better than police malpractice, when that beating will feel the same if it's a cop or a vigilante. i hugely disagree with prison and the prison systems as they stand, i think a homely environment and the focus on safety and care are essential for people, so there are ideas i have for how these systems would become something that provides that, but i am just genuinely not blinded by idealism enough to think a glorified form of gossip, especially on a huge stage, could ever be or should ever be salvaged in any way. systems can be held accountable for failure and for cruelty, that many faceless people just can't be held back by independent investigations and regulation.

the thing about "callout/cancel culture" that convinced me it's rotten to the core is the dehumanisation you face once you become the subject of a campaign like that. a lot of criticisms of callout/cancellation attempts appeal to the humanity of the subject, pointing out that it's unfair and unproductive to treat a person, a fellow human being, regardless of how much harm they've caused and how genuinely unlikable they are, like that. but unfortunately the reality of being the target of a mob mentality often means facing the very isolating and traumatising experience of realising that you've ceased to exist as a person in their eyes. you're a representation of your transgressions, an embodiment of harm that needs to be erased like a blemish, a spectacle for entertainment, a means of earning social approval by publicly condemning and humiliating you in what quickly becomes a competition to see who can strike the blow that knocks you down so you never get up again. nobody cares about who you are outside of what you did. people make mistakes and hurt one another, but there is always the capacity for change, for regret and reparations. you are an irredeemable monster. you can't change. the only way to make sure you can't cause harm ever again is to neutralise you entirely. to drive you off and hurt you so badly that you never consider coming back. and it often succeeds. but it doesn't make the world a better or safer place. it just tells everyone that certain behaviours will be punished, so you should conceal them, and harshly condemn them in others so that everyone knows where you stand; nobody will stand up for you if you're accused and brought out for judgement, so you shouldn't trust anyone, and always be on the lookout to take them down before they can do the same to you. you're not creating a safe, welcoming community. you're creating a panopticon built on fear and punishment.

Silmarillion Fandom Transphobia

Hi, I’m @lie-where-i-land​ (James, 20s, gay trans man).  I’ve been thinking a lot recently about transphobia and trans allies in fandom spaces, and how people may pay us trans folks lip service but at the end of the day do little to support us. Yesterday was the final straw to break my back, shall we say. 

A while ago, it came to the attention of multiple trans tolkien bloggers that one semi-prominent user, @venwe, was a terf.  Most of us blocked and moved on.  It appears that this user’s original blog, @venwe, was terminated by staff, as they reappeared under a different url (@suyao-supremacy) with a promotional post asking other big name silm bloggers to boost and help them regain their mutuals. I sent the following anon ask to @cycas​, who had boosted the original promotional post.

And now the peace we all hoped for so desperately is over and I don’t know where to begin about that.  I’m betting you are young enough that you don’t know what you are asking me when you say ‘stop talking to a Russian woman because I think that they say the wrong things.’ I’m not dismissing your concerns (of the Ukraine war) and nor so far as I can see is Venwe). @cycas​ tagged the post saying any further conversation needed to be done off anon.  I was incredibly hesitant about this because I feared onlookers would put transphobic stuff in my inbox, but the response above was such a bad faith interpretation of what I’d actually written that I felt the need to clear the air. So, I reblogged the post with my addition below:

It makes you seem like the charitable and good hearted fandom participant, and me like some sort of miserly buzzkill.

I think we both know that this is not a case of “don’t talk to this Russian lady bc Russian cooties.” I think you’re right in saying that part of what makes the Tolkien fandom great is the depth and international breadth of its roots. My mutuals and I are from every corner of the globe, and I think that makes our friendship better not worse. And no, i don’t agree with them on everything (concerning Tolkien or offline matters). I find that maintaining a friendship with someone from a wildly different background mostly comes down to open mindedness, willingness to listen, taking things with good faith, and asking clarifying questions. As such, when my international friends have challenged my views or beliefs, we’ve managed to remain friends.

Posting transphobic rhetoric, following radfems, and being part of a circle of transphobes that operate within the tolkien fandom is not “having a difference of opinion.” I don’t need someone to have the same background as me, or to be knowledgeable in the same way I am knowledgeable. My grandmother is old, transphobic in the way much of her generation is, and her opinions like “[she] doesn’t care who uses the ladies’ room as long as no one pisses on the floor” are not PC. Her fumbling attempts at progress are done in better faith than the people on here that try to draw borders to distinguish perpetual man and perpetual woman, perpetual patriarch and perpetual victim, as if trans people are (depending on what is rhetorically suitable) dangerous invaders in need of purging or misguided mental degenerates in need of salvation.

I don’t comb through the blog of everyone that interacts with me on the off chance they might be “problematique.” I dont expect that level of effort from anyone. At best, I give new followers a cursory glance to their bio and top three posts. However, I think it is pretty reasonable that I don’t follow terfs or reblog from radfems in the fandom because “it’s not a post about radfeminism.” This is a pretty standard rule of thumb followed by every trans person I know. Why? You’re right, venwe is not a big platform influencer. But I am a trans man. I post something, an ally reblogs it, their follower is a somewhat stealthy terf and reblogs it, their followers are terfs and now I have terfs in my inbox. The silm fandom is small enough as it is. Terfs find blogs like mine in large part because “allies” overlook radfem rhetoric as a difference of opinion.

This fandom is either friendly to trans people or it’s friendly to terfs. If it’s friendly to both, then don’t be surprised if your circle ends up just being terfs, because trans people won’t stick around for long like this. No, i don’t need to follow you, or boost your content. Please then, do trans people the courtesy of not reblogging our content if you’re hiding terfs in your coattails.” (end image description)

@cycas​ did not reblog my addition, either to not draw more attention to their words or to avoid drawing attention specifically to my rebuttal.  Instead Cycas replied in the comments, which you can see below:

So there was no acknowledgement from cycas that they had been and continued to be (as visible from their following lists - though venwe/suyao-supremacy’s has now been hastily privated) mutuals with a terf.  They continue to run with the false claim that this is beef because of the russian invasion.  And they double down on how the only one at risk here is venwe, not any of the trans tolkien fans that they are now introducing to a terf’s blog through a promotional post. I don’t Want to post about my life or my trans tolkien content for my followers to reblog when I know there are cryptoterfs that are mutuals with some of you, terfs who will be reading about my personal life, climbing into my inbox, making me and my friends feel unsafe and unwelcome. Now, terfs are perfectly capable of combing trans tags for my blog. But being mutuals with them hands them a list of queer and trans bloggers, wrapped with a pretty bow.Either this fandom is safe for trans people or it’s safe for terfs.” (end image description)

I am at this point past my image limit, but I wanted to share some words from @warrioreowynofrohan​, who commented in support of cycas on the initial post. The screenshot and my reply are available here for proof. 

Warrioreowynofrohan: thumbs up emoji. the new attitude of you should never communicate with or even read anything said by anyone who disagrees with you on anything of substance is deeply destructive and harmful. If people want to curate their own social media experience selectively, that’s their own choice; but they have no right to demand/pressure that everyone else do the same.

my response from the comments: this was specifically about people being friends with terfs. I’m friends with lots of people that I disagree with on one thing or another. Taking a look at what the radfems are saying so you can stay abreast of the situation is really not the same as boosting a radfems promo post. Being friends with radfems and letting them into fandom bc their meta is good puts trans ppl at risk. Yall can choose your terf friendships over trans friendships if you like tho.

I’m a queer trans man. I am no stranger to the shadowy campaigns against bloggers for being the wrong flavor of queer or doing fandom in a way someone else doesn’t like. I think it is incredibly disrespectful to the queer bloggers that got harassed and are still getting harassed to the point of leaving this site to draw deliberate comparisons here in defense of a terf. People like terfs, exclusionists, and X Critical folks regularly deride and attack bloggers like me. Saying that you won’t allow bigots in your circle is a good thing actually.

Curating your social media to your “personal preference” is something like me choosing not to follow people that vehemently hate the noldor or who call elwing a bad mom.

Unfollowing and blocking bigots is not a matter of “personal preference,” it’s a matter of keeping your marginalized friends safe.

Final Thoughts: 

I don’t hold any anger or suspicion toward people that have followed venwe/suyao-supremacy in the past.  I know lots of people have had interesting, friendly, and rather innocent conversations with them (at one point, they were rather prolific on here).  It’s hard to tell if someone is a terf masquerading as a friendly blog.  And I don’t think the solution is to fall into paranoia, scrutinizing every acquaintance for rotten subtext! I just wish more people would appraise themselves of the base tenets of radfem rhetoric so that they can identify it when it crops up, and either re-educate or block the user it’s coming from.  

Honestly, I don’t know where to go from here.  I don’t want any hate or rude words sent to those involved.  But I feel apprehensive about the state of this fandom.  I wonder how many people saw this exchange yesterday and said nothing.  I am not even so much interested in venwe/suyao-supremacy, who will no doubt slip up again and present us with more terf evidence.  The verdict has already been dealt, months ago, on that account.  I am far more interested in such people in this fandom who prefer to befriend terfs over trans folks.

I'll also add that as of writing, the r/RWBY mods still have not banned this account even knowing perfectly well this is Canonseeker. Did you see the stuff with the trans-age (says she's 16 but has also been on the internet for 20 years) zoophile defending maps and bestiality. Her name is dead-discourse-dove and she's blaming all her backlash on terfs. Not many of trans people or allies are speaking up and I'm worried the terfs will use that as a recruitment tactic or worse those pedophiles will use this to groom young scared trans people. (I know she's not a troll because I have friend in the Hannibal fandom and apparently dove is pretty infamous for being a pedophile).

Okay so report and block this person because if this is her actual behavior, which from me looking at her blog for a few seconds it is, it's disgusting.

And if terfs do use this then know that terfs would use anything. It doesn't matter if the entire trans community condemns it as long as one trans person supports it to them.

Talking about other social media users on an anonymous website like Tumblr makes it almost impossible to know enough about them for me to feel comfortable with my judgement.

Even if I'm given evidence because let's face it, callouts can be made in bad faith. I don't know what year that's from, of the person ever apologized, if they changed their behavior, etc.

I don't want to look for that shit myself either. It's genuinely a waste of my time and can be actually time consuming. Looking for shitty things a random internet user has done to verify something another random internet user said is also just unhealthy to me.

I'm usually more likely to support something else already made because then I don't feel as responsible for possible false information. When it comes to this I'm terrified of starting possible false info.

And honestly, I don't share my triggers because they can be used to harm me, and it's entirely possible that I now feel pressured to look into something that has been traumatizing to me personally. Not the case here but could've been and could be if I allow this to keep happening.

If I don't respond or say anything then I feel like the person who sent it now has a negative representation of me and associates me with that user.

I was fully on Dream’s side until the talk of responsibility came up, because yeah actually he does have a level of responsibility for his fanbase’s actions. And before anyone tries to misrepresent my words, no I do not think Dream has to be held responsible for every single bad thing one of his fans does. I DO, however, think he needs to realize that at over 25 million subscribers and knowing (as he did admit in his tweets) that anyone he replies to will get hate that spouting off whatever he wants is irresponsible. “Oh so he just has to take it silently?” No, he could respond without directly putting someone in the line of fire. Because frankly I don’t care how stupid a tweet some hater makes, the vicious dog piling and harassment is far worse than whatever their reply was. Bitzel was right, sorry Dream.

I think (I'm going somewhere with this, bear with me) people on the internet are too used to being coddled. I know that sounds a bit "back in my day" of me so I'm gonna try to word this the best I can - digital safety isn't really something a lot of people take seriously anymore. Anonymity isn't very common and is in many cases (as we've seen in this very fandom) actively discouraged. With that comes the notion that your social media is yours to say whatever you want. But the fact of the matter is that consequences are always possible. Your employer can see your hateful tweets and fire you. Your friend can see you bitching about her on snapchat and confront you. And a content creator can respond to you when you're in his mentions. I don't like when creators prowl their indirects to respond simply because they're drawing attention to something that didn't need to have attention drawn to it -- though I stand by my original argument in some ways, that's where I 100% agree with you and your point about personal responsibility. But everyone looks through quote retweets and they're very publicly visible to his fans and people who despise him alike; oftentimes they're full of literally the most vile shit ever.

Dream should absolutely consider the nature of his fanbase when interacting with people. I have no love lost for smiletwt. And I think Dream is many of the things people criticize him for: impulsive, hot-headed, etc. That's not a callout, he's referred to himself as such. But I also think that it's an odd angle to take these situations and spin it in that way when so many fans of his recieve hate constantly for no reason other than existing in that space. There are shitty people everywhere. And it's so weird (not legitimately, but like, on a big-picture level) that people are so lazer focused on "Twitter hate" as an example of something that makes Dream a terrible person when there's much bigger consequences being spurred on by big names and faces. That's a bit tu quoque of me, I'll admit -- I'm not trying to defend Dream here, really. I don't care. I just think that people have weird attitudes toward social media, creators, and fans (Dream not exempt from this) and it shows more than ever right now.

A bit of a long story time, but I think it's been long enough for me to be able to send this in. Someone posted their doll on the gram, and I was really interested in the sculpt mainly the body, and company. So this interaction happened about a year ago, names removed, and slightly changed for anonymity, and only focusing on the relevant parts. I wasn't following this person, they just were on my explore page. the TL:DR interaction Me: "Hey, that's a super cool doll, I like what you did with it. The sculpt looks great, could you tell me where you got it? Company and stuff." "Thanks, I've been working on this doll a lot, but no, I don't really talk about sculpts I use for my OC dolls. Sorry." Me: "Oh, ok thanks though. Still cool doll."   So they didn't give me the sculpt name, or company name.

Ok, fine, it's their choice, I'm not entitled to the info. So I just asked a few of my doll friends if they had maybe seen similar sculpts, or had alternatives, since I totally fell in love with the body. Turns out one of them knew the exact sculpt, and where to find it, so they gave me the link, like the friend they are. I found a different facesculpt I really liked from the company, so I bought the basic set, when originally I just wanted a body. I then made a post where I just made a small update on my doll order list, where I added in that doll. Completely different head, different color for the resin, and I made a small comment about my plan for the doll, which is nothing like the OP's doll. Imagine the difference between theirs being Sci-fi modern, while mine is Medieval fantasy. I got a DM a bit later which went kinda like "Hey, where did you find the doll?" Me, not recognizing them: "Oh Hi, a friend gave me the info. They knew the company. It's [insert the company name]." "Yeah I know the company, I'm asking why you're copying me, when I said I didn't like people using my OCs as inspiration."

Me, now realising who it is: "I'm sorry, but I thought you didn't like getting requests for doll info, so I just went elsewhere to find out. I just really liked the body, and you can see I ordered a different sculpt." "I just don't think it's ok that you're using my OCs to buy dolls. If someone doesn't want you to copy them you should respect that, and not go behind my back about it." "Uhhh, sorry? I'm not copying you though. Your doll is cool and all, but I'm not personally into that style at all." "You used my doll to find the company, so you were obviously trying to copy me. Do you know how rude that is, when I told you not to?" "I mean, you posted the doll for everyone to see, if I hadn't asked a friend, I would probably have found it sooner or later. I'm sorry you think I'm copying you, but I'm really not, and I honestly don't really care much about your OCs, besides that one pic I saw." (tldr of her response, she did rant more.) "Whatever, people like you who steal other people's OCs are the worst. There's gotta be something wrong with you for taking the ideas of others and pretending they are yours, just because you feel entitled to information from people who refuse to give it to you."

Then got blocked, and I think she wrote a snarky underhanded callout to "people who copy my style because they aren't creative." under the next pic of the OC doll, which I got told by one of the friends I had sent the original pic to, to find the company. If you don't want people to see your OC's, and get inspired, or people trying to find out the companies, don't post pics at all. Seriously, I didn't get the same sculpt, I only got the same body, but a completely different head sculpt and different resin, and I have a completely different fashion style, and even face-up style, which is really obvious on my page.

Jason's hesitance in the doorway was noticeable as Tim led the silent lady into the living room of their safehouse in the Coventry. This particular location chosen for its proximity not only to their base of operations, but the rooftop he'd originally pinned their guest to. Their guest truly was silent too, not only from lack of speaking, but the movement of her clothing, her steps, her shifting weight all completely muted into nothingness. Had he not felt her solid wrist within his grip, Tim could easily pass her off as a ghost. Even still, the life form trailing him felt haunting. A sense of foreboding laying like a thick blanket over the room.

Coming to a stop in front of an armchair, he pressed down on her shoulder, watching as she complied, body lowering into the chair while maintaining perfect eye contact. The whisper of what wanted to be a smile stayed on her lips as she settled, as though they were old friends meeting over afternoon tea. It put him on edge. 

She shouldn't feel so comfortable with both of them closed in on her, anonymity on the verge of collapse as they scrutinized her every move. 

Tim waved Jason off as the other reached for a set of ropes.

"Don't bother, she can escape them."

He seemed to mull the words over before narrowing them down to their based meaning, "You're saying she chose to be captured."

"Yes."

Their guest's eyes flashed in mild amusement before settling back into the blank void of almost smiling. It was creepy, like a porcelain doll come to life for a flicker of a second only to make you second guess if it ever happened at all the next. 

"Why isn't she talking? She seemed to have plenty to say before," Jason squinted at her, keeping a reasonable distance, one hand hovering over his left holster.

Tim shook his head, "She responded to one question, then ignored the rest."

"Huh. So like a puzzle then."

"What." Tim deadpanned.

"No no, hear me out," Jason waved his hands about, seemingly catching the lady's attention as she followed the motion, "she answered one question, right?"

"Yes?" He folded his arms, waiting to see where Jay was going with this.

"So it's not that she won't respond to anything. Only to things she decides are worth answering. Whether that means things she sees as important or just too noteworthy to pass up, I'm not sure, but she seemed pretty quick to jump on Bat-wannabe and demon spawn's case, so I'm hedging towards the latter here."

A startled giggle makes both men snap their head towards the cause.

"Demon Spawn," she mumbles, earning a grin from Jason and an eye roll from Tim. Jason was just grateful he'd forgone the helmet tonight so she could see the positive reaction.

"Definitely the latter then," Tim sighed, reaching to rub his eyes, only to drop his hand back down at the reminder of the mask pressed to his fingers.

"Easy peasy then," Jason sat on a crate normally used as a makeshift table in the barren apartment, unbothered by the way it made his knees knock into the lady's.

"Sure. Easy."

"Yeah, all we gotta do is intrigue her enough to want to talk to us. And that can't be too difficult, otherwise she wouldn'ta bothered talking to begin with, isn't that right, sweetheart?" He leaned towards her with a friendly smile. One that wasn't returned.

"Yeah, seems to be working wonders," Tim mocked.

"Just give me a sec, I haven't even tried," he waved Tim off, focusing on the figure before him, "so, you seem pretty calm considering the circumstances. That got more to do with your confidence in your abilities to escape or more an interest in being captured?"

Silence.

"Were you hoping we'd use the ropes? I could bring them back if you're into that kind of thing."

More silence.

"What's got you tongue tied anyhow? See something you like?"

Dead silence only this one came with a delicately raised eyebrow and a glance in Tim's direction, as if to say, 'He always this cocksure?'

Jason lept on the action even still.

"Oh, he got your interest back there? I guess that makes sense since you talked to him first. That reminds me, how'd you react so fast when that lowlife got that lucky swipe in, anyhow? Unless you were already there?"

Her eyes slowly drifted back over to him at the lack of speech from the other, not reacting even to the callout.

"Feel free to dazzle us at any time," Tim called over.

Her lips twitched up.

"Oh, I see. Only willing to interact with little red then?"

A head tilt.

"What about demon spawn? Anything to say about him? Or what about big brother pretender?"

Her eyes snapped up to his, narrowed and... calculating?

"Think I struck a chord?" He turned towards Tim who only shrugged only to be wrenched back to focus as a tiny hand gripped his arm tightly, the previously complacent figure now tilted forward and staring him down with a hard look, flickering over his face as though the mask wasn't even there. Before he could even twist her arm away, she murmured out, "You're the second Robin, aren't you?"

Oh. Maybe calling Dick their big brother even jokingly was a mistake. Oh well, too late now,  and what did it really matter if she knew? Not as though it connected back to his civilian form.

"Yeah. You figured that out pretty quickly."

"Faked your death? To get away?" She asked, voice gruff and heavily accented.

"Died and brought back. Weird magic shit. Almost lost a bit of me on the way back."

"Should you be telling her that?" Tim bit out.

"What's it matter if I do? What's she going to do with that? She's not even from this country. Besides, you want her to trust us enough to talk, might as well instill a little trust in return, ya know? Not like we're interrogating her, otherwise you woulda taken over by now," Jason eased Tim again, his own words sparking his own thoughts back into motion, "Which reminds me, you travel here the normal way? Cause it'll be pretty easy to look up young women who've traveled here from France."

"Weird magic shit," was the deadened response.

"Touché."

"Why's your voice so hoarse?" Tim asked, finally moving forward to rejoin the conversation fully, only to watch her rub her throat.

"Not much of a talker?" Tim continued, meeting her eyes, "how long since you held a full conversation with someone then? Days? Weeks? Months?" Her eyes flickered, "Months then? Why? Why not talk? Why talk to us now?"

Her entire figure seemed to droop, caving into itself and finally she responded to him directly, "I'm alone."

While Jason seemed confused, it's like she struck something deep within Tim. Something that understood. That wanted to reach out and contradict her just so they could both be wrong.

And right as he reached out to do just that, the seat beneath her opened up in a pool of black ink that dragged her under only to close back up, leaving his hand outstretched towards an empty chair.

"Fuck, now I'm even more confused," Jason groused, standing up and kicking away the crate as he went.

"Yeah…"
