Technically this wasn’t the first Hemingway I ever read. There’s been a few short stories, decent ones, out of a collection that’s still sitting on my shelf that I haven’t finished. But this was the first Hemingway book I’ve read cover to cover, and maybe it was a strange one to to start with. A Movable Feast could be thought of as both the beginning and the end of Hemingway’s story. Written at the end of his life in the 1960s and published posthumously, this is a memoir that nonetheless throws back to the beginnings of his career, living in Paris in the 1920s and struggling to be recognized as a writer, even among a community of some of the greatest literary and artistic names of the 20th century. James Joyce was in Paris at the same time. Ezra Pound, who was only just starting to be a complete fascist, was among the circle that met at Gertrude Stein’s house salon. And perhaps most notably of all, F. Scott Fitzgerald was just then publishing a little book of no acclaim, written in Paris but set in and all about New York, called The Great Gatsby.

For all the weight of the literary figures that fill its pages though, and that fill the left bank cafés and weary old streets of Hemingway’s nostalgic recollections, A Movable Feast isn’t a weighty read. It’s light, romantic in the archaic sense of the word, airy, almost cozy. It hums with saudade like a trumpet in a Montmarte jazz club. Certainly Hemingway’s consciously minimalist style, the most well-known hallmark of his writing, plays a part. As if to remind the reader of this, the first story tells simply of Hemingway’s daily quest to write a few good pages in a good café, and here he delivers some really great writing motivation: “write one true sentence.” And then do it again, because there will always come another sentence that the discerning writer can know is simple and true. But the lightness comes too from the fact that these years of bohemian bonhomie seem filled, through the filter of pen and page, with goings-on of little consequence but great value. The reader wants more than anything to be living the life portrayed in this book, to drink well and eat well and live in small apartments and share brilliant writing among a group of friends who are all brilliant writers, to be poor but happy in a world that stands apart from hustle and stress. Because isn’t that the hipster ideal? Of course, one has to question how true all of this was, being recollected through la-vie-en-rose-coloured glasses decades later. Or one doesn’t, if one prefers to simply take the chocolate as it rolls.

It’s been a couple of years since I read A Moveable Feast, and to be honest, a lot of the actual plot and happenings, or rather, hippenings, of Hemingway’s vignettes and short stories have faded. I know it started in that café, and then there were trips to salons and restaurants. I recall that there was a trip to a racetrack over the course of which Hemingway and his wife realized that what either of them can say and what they mean to convey can never be fully reconciled, and they worried about that fact until they came home, drank some wine, and concluded that that’s simply the human condition, and it renders everyone a fascinating mystery, so why worry about it? This all took place during a false spring when goat milk peddlers drove their herds through the streets of Paris, which makes the reader think, is any understanding we can gain of each other merely a false spring that we cling to because in the moment it's as good as the real thing? And if it is ephemeral, does that matter, when in the end everything is? And I remember that the book ended in the Alps, on one of the very original ski holidays, which as a skier a hundred years later, I loved. In between scenes of wide-open slopes and warm chalets, there’s a mention of a man killed from his neck being worn right through by the friction of an avalanche, as if to say, don’t forget, the dream exists among death. Just years before this recollection, this halcyon city of light was a place of war and fire, of the same war and fire that unmoored us all from the steady paths of violent industrial civilization and led us to seek this quiet life of secret glamour instead. And the hipster reading today, or in the glory days of the 21st-century hipster that’ve just barely passed us by, might feel the same way, and want to seek the same path away from the age of Covid and Trump and the failings of late capitalism, or, if we’re talking retroactively, of falling towers and George Bush and war in the desert and the Great Recession that seems routine now but was such an unmooring in 2008. That’s why the 1920s were an age of one kind of hipster, the 2000s and early 10s another, and we may be due for another. But back to Hemingway.

For all that rambling last paragraph trying to recall what happened in this book, what happened was never really the point. What lingers in memory is the feel of it all and the characters that populate the stories. I remember images conjured in my head of a 1920s convertible driving with a lost top, soaking in the rain through the fields of Champagne, complete with the smell of mud and lavender. I remember Gertrude Stein as the paradox she seems in Hemingway’s recollection: an iron woman of great softness, matron of a house where everyone was welcome, but you’d be on the street in an instant if you called her a mother; an open, almost evangelical lesbian who nonetheless thought that male homosexuality, specifically, was abhorrent. The text doesn’t judge these figures with their odd views. That’s left to the reader. Hemingway’s just observing; a part of what Stein eternally dubs the “lost generation,” but at the same time, its chronicler in a future much changed. As Hemingway’s Lost Generation friend Scotty Fitzgerland would famously write of his own narrator, he was within and without.

Since the beginning of quarantine, like many people from all over the globe, you had taken a liking to spending time on TikTok.

While you and Harry had shared the same home, you were both also glad to at least be inside with one another instead of him being locked out of the country because of the pandemic. So, between your stay in your London home and driving to stay for a while at your cozy home in Italy, you were always laughing and giggling as you showed Harry some videos on the app, even showing some that his fans created for him.

It wasn’t a secret that you and Harry were together, especially since the fans were surprised that Harry was with someone who worked as a software application and web developer who found joy in working with codes, posting pictures on Instagram with her cat and friends as they bowled and cooked, made videos of how exciting it was to finally buy new eyeglasses after keeping the last ones for 7 years straight, coming off as someone who was easy to approach and interact with.

The fans weren’t the only ones surprised, because so was Harry. While he knew how funny you were, especially because of your frequent use of sarcasm, he was surprised that fans seemed to like that about you, too.

When you sent out a tweet sharing a funny TikTok, fans were quick to find your account and follow you, even when you had 0 videos posted, but then you began to post.

For the first few videos, you only recorded some of the recipes you had learned during quarantine, using the French and Ratatouille’s song, Le Festin, as you did.

For one of your videos, you had made a mug cake, a mere second of Harry eating it as he sat in front of you recorded was enough to send everyone into a wave of excitement of their idol and favorite artist on the app, bathing in the mundane and domestic life with his girlfriend.

You had seen many pranks and challenges on the app, all of which that made you laugh and gasp.

And then you watched the FaceTime couple challenge.

The challenge had funny videos attached to it, partners reacting differently to it that had you curious to know how your own boyfriend would react and you thought that there was only one way to find out.

You were in Italy, both of your bodies a little hot from the sun you bathed in an hour ago as you two swam in your private pool.

You and Harry sat on the same couch across from each other, your feet beside him as he subconsciously ran his fingers on your calf, eyeglasses on as he held a book in his other hand. His hair was a little messy, white t-shirt and pink shorts on, looking like a dream under the golden sunlight the windows had allowed in.

You tried to stifle your giggles as you opened the app and found the sound, flipping the camera so that it showed Harry before you began recording.

The sound of an incoming FaceTime video call sounding before one of you accepting it was heard.

“Yo, what’s good shawty?” The male voice sounded, Harry’s head instantly snapping to your direction with furrowed eyebrows, “Your man still around?”

His eyebrows shot up, his head tilting as he mouthed a “what?” while his eyes squinted before moving to hover over you, the last second of the video being one of his face close to the camera as he looked up at you in confusion but with a small smile as you laughed.

Harry looked at your phone, finding a footage of him starting with the recorded sound starting to play before he rolled his eyes as you laughed, a dimpled smile making its way to his face.

“You’re the worst.” And as if he was embarrassed, Harry lied on top of you, burying his head into you neck as you continued to laugh.

“That was so good.” You laughed, “You thought that was real?”

“I didn’t know what to think,” he whined before laughing, pulling his head away to look at you, “Just worried that you’d go for someone who calls you shawty.”

“I’d be a daft if I ever think about going from being called lovie to shawty.” You pecked his lips before looking back at your phone, beginning to laugh again, “Look at how concerned you look!”

“Y/N…” Harry dragged, burying his head back into your neck.

“I’m so posting that.”

Needless to say, the fans had a field day.

Your voice. She could never get tired of listening to it. It could be filled with excitement about the simplest things or the certain tone you make when you pout because of her teasing. Absolutely love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Your neck! She loves to bury her face in it and leaving little kisses all over it (depending on you things might escalate👀). It’s also a place of comfort after a bad day. She claims that your scent calms her down. It also gives her the excuse of being close to you.

She really likes to have you lay your head on her chest. It’s a common occurrence for you to be laying on her on the couch while she’s scrolling through her phone. Also really enjoys having your head in her lap and vice-versa. When you start playing with her hair she just melts.

She’s kind of on the fence with it. She really doesn’t want to go through the whole birth process. Other than that though she might be into it. If she gets to see you smile with the kids

Believes that love shouldn’t be measured in material things. It’s nice to give gifts once in a while but feels like it’s not the only aspect of affection. Don’t let that discourage you though! Her first priority would be to make sure nothing is an immediate threat to your life. After that, she’s going to fix you up and make you get some rest. Sometimes Blaise can be a little hesitant to kiss you. Her nen can get in the way and the last thing she wants is for you to be affected by it. However, her favorite type are those deep passionate ones. She usually gives you one right before she leaves for a job. (I just thought about her giving you that kiss right before yorknew without knowing that was going to be her last. I’m sitting here sad now.)

L = Love (how do they show they love you?)

Physical touch is really big. Believes that actions speak louder than words. She also just really likes touching you. If that’s not your forte then she’ll go to the next best thing: gift-giving. Baise has really good taste so if she sees something she thinks you’ll like consider it bought.

M = Memory (favorite memory together?)

You two were on a date. It was at a field of flowers that you could pick. To be honest though you two were just playing around. Running and jumping around, laughing at each other’s antics. I mean who could ask for a better day. You two were standing under a tree sharing short and sweet kisses when a girl took a picture. It’s Blaise favorite. Whenever she’s doing a job she’ll look at it to remind her what she’s coming back to.

N = Nightmare (when is their worst fear?)

Someone coming to kill you. She’s worked and dealt with some nasty people. She also knows that people do come after others just because they feel like it. She would be absolutely torn if she came home one day to not only see that place trashed but to also see you laying on the floor lifeless.

→ the first of two installments in the remy x reader series. it’s a friday night, movie night, so you and remy decide to cook together. 

a/n: i hate it here so freaking much this turned out to be more genuine than i would’ve liked but i hope you laugh anyways i’m gonna make the angst one way funnier or i’m gonna d*e trying damn it

you knocked on the door, clutching your grocery bags as you waited patiently. you heard scuffling from inside, before the door swung open wide, almost bashing into the wall. 

remy took the bags from you and set them on the counter, ushering you in. 

“thanks for bringing these!” she said excitedly, preheating the oven. “just go pick something to watch while i start making dinner.” 

you nodded quietly, heading inside to the living area. fairy lights hung above the tv, candles everywhere just to make the place smell better. you reached for the remote and fell back on the couch, clicking through netflix until you found a suitable movie for the night. 

glancing to the kitchen, you saw remy cutting up the vegetables you had bought with you. you stood up with a grunt, walking over to the kitchen to see if she needed any help.

“can you starting lining these up in the pan, like this?” 

you watched her file a slice of eggplant, zucchini, and then yellow squash. 

flashing her a thumbs up, you reached for the vegetables she’d already cut, slowly lining them against the walls of the pan. you worked your way until the pan was full, until remy drizzled olive oil over it and stuck it into the oven. 

“do you wanna start on the sauce?” she asked eagerly. 

you were hesitant. this was the first time you’d really cooked before, what if you messed it up? “i’m not sure,” you said uncertainly. “i can help you make it if you want?” 

she shook her head quickly. “girl i don’t give a fucky wucky bucky clicky dicky if it tastes bad. anyone can cook!” 

the three words helped you regain your confidence. what was there to be afraid of? it was only a simple sauce. remy started to heat up the pan for you, spilling some olive oil and throwing in garlic and herbs. 

she handed you a wooden spoon and you took it gratefully, slowly beginning to sauté the ingredients. a few minutes later, she handed you a can of crushed tomatoes and you poured it in, wincing slightly from the popping oil. you stirred and stirred until it was smooth, before turning the stove off. 

remy squinted as she looked into the oven, checking in on the pan of vegetables. “i think it’s almost done,” she murmured, before looking up to you. “good job on the sauce, we boutta eat good tonight.”  

she shooed you away back to the living room, insisting that you just start the movie already. you trudged to the couch, glancing back every now and then to make sure she wasn’t going to drop anything or spill the food you’d made (she would). 

the timer on the oven blared as remy slipped on her oven mitts, reaching for the pan. she set it on the counter gently, before reaching for the pot and pouring the sauce you’d made over the baked vegetables. 

she smiled contentedly. 

“it’s done. ratatouille.” 

le festin played softly in the background as remy the rat came on the screen. you smiled at the picture perfect scene. what more could you want than to watch ratatouille, featuring remy the rat, while eating ratatouille with your friend remy?

How quickly did/will they fall in love? - it was love at first sight but then they started talking i do think it was some form of ~interest~ in one another at first sight, but then all that drama and lack of communication happened so they didn’t really allow themselves to even dream about the possibility of a relationship. HOWEVER! once lion joined rainbow and they talked their shit out like people who know how to cope, there was a period of a few months that is now referred to as The Four Months of Pining™, during which glaz did a lot of paintings where the subject (who usually bears an uncanny resemblance to doc or lion) is staring at something (or someone) longingly. he calls it his french period. when they finally get together, a LOT of money changes hands. and goes straight into sledge’s pocket (he was the only one who bet that it would take them this long). diana gets a brand new collar (handmade), bed (handmade), dish (handmade), and many new toys (some handmade, some store-bought. sledge’s craftsmanship can only get him so far) 

How was their first kiss? - you know how the french are supposed to be super suave and confident??? and how gay people are trying their hardest but they’re just Not Good at things????? (i know these are stereotypes but stay with me). well, with their 5/8 french blood (i hc one of doc’s parents is fully algerian while the other is half french, half algerian), and their 4/4 gay blood, they have an 81.25% chance of success in matters of the heart. sadly, that 18.75% chance of failure came into play during this situation. picture it. doc and lion. romantic, home-cooked dinner. le festin is playing in the background. they’re holding hands over the table. suddenly, doc’s cat goes into labour. all hell breaks loose. lion is getting flashbacks to his son’s birth, so now he’s hyperventilating. doc carries him to the couch and turns on the fan so he can cool off and catch his breath, before carefully moving his cat, Rayie (arabic for gorgeous, pronounced rye-ah) to the living room in his handmade Birthing Box, then grabs a pile of blankets and a heat lamp and situates himself on the ground nearby so he can help her if she needs it. once the kittens are born (they’re twins!! Sadiqi is the boy, and Amirti is the girl!!!) doc makes sure they’re nice and warm and that Rayie is recovering, and gives her pets while she cleans her babies. once the happy family is all settled in for the night, doc walks over to the couch and just. lays down on top of lion. once he’s gotten over the adrenaline of the birth, he takes lion’s face in his hands and says “promise me you’ll be more calm if we ever decide to have kids” and gives him a BIG smooch while lion’s just short-circuiting like “does he know i have a son???? did i forget to mention my son?????? also what about these kittens??? are they not sufficiently childish to count as children????? DOES HE WANT KIDS????? does he want to marry me??????? wait why is he getting so clo-”

Wedding:

Who proposed? - lion. it was the day of their two year anniversary (yes i AM saying they got together the august after outbreak don’t @ me) and they were on vacation at doc’s family’s Secret Beach House. they were vibing on the balcony, watching the sunset, when lion suddenly clears his throat. doc turns to look at him and finds his boyfriend down on one knee, looking like he might flee to Bermuda. he’s reaching for something in his pocket. doc starts laughing. lion, completely misunderstanding his reaction, flushes and stammers out an apology. doc sees this, and immediately stops, though he’s still smiling gleefully as he catches lion by the biceps, then reaches into his own pocket and pulls the ring he was going to give olivier. they exchange rings, giggling like little kids, and spend the rest of the night making out on whatever surfaces are available. 

Who is the best man/men? - for lion? montagne. (his son is the ring bearer and doc’s niece is the flower girl). for doc? rook. he’s so happy he gets to participate in his dad’s wedding

Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? - doc. he (privately) dreams of retiring (eventually) and living out his lifelong dreams of being a househusband. so

Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? - it used to be lion out of necessity, but when people started asking about his “wife” he was really torn between telling them that he and his son’s mother separated, but now he has a partner and his son seems very happy about it. when doc finally attends a meeting with lion, people really struggle to hide their shock. a few clunky but well-meaning “we support you”’s and “we’re sorry for everything that’s been going on”’s later, doc has used his charm to make friends with literally everyone. from then on, he is on pta duty on behalf of lion and his ex

Who cried the most at graduation? - lion! his parents purposefully didn’t show at his, so it’s a big deal for him to show his son just how proud he is. doc tears up a little too, but manages to mostly keep it together so he can support lion, who spends most of the day heave-crying about how proud he is into his husband’s shoulder. gustave just pats him on the back and tells him that they’ll run out of donuts if they don’t get to the concession stand soon

Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? - doc. civil disobedience, baby!! he has never been caught. lion fears the law after his youth, so he tries to avoid any visits to law enforcement. he also can’t stand to see his son behind bars

Who is the most picky in their food choice? - doc, but only because he can be a bit of a spice supremacist. he has to get his ingredients from these very specific farms and markets or else his great grandmother will begin manifesting in their house to curse them

Who does the grocery shopping? - doc, bc he does NOT trust lion to not just sweep all of the microwave ramen and kraft mac n cheese into the cart then sprint to self-checkout

How often do they bake desserts? - whenever possible. doc and maestro live by the philosophy “don’t do anything halfway” if they’re going to go through the trouble of making a meal, it will have multiple courses. 

Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? - doc is more of a salad eater but only for ease of consumption with halal laws. he adores filet mignon

All I can keep thinking of is that child modern!reader thing, and the reader most likely watched Dora or any other type of show that’s about another language. They go around switching languages, or singing different types of songs. “Le Festin”

Child modern!reader who watched Dora and can speak Spanish would absolutely be favored by Javier. 

     Arthur was the one that brought them to camp. Javier was tending to his horse when he saw the gang had formed a small circle around something, the girls cooing at whatever it was like they did when Jack was a baby. Child modern!reader is definitely a spitfire, just like the other modern!readers, and wasn’t enjoying all the attention so they shouted “apártate!” (Back off) as loud as their little lungs could. The sound of Javier’s native language reminded him so much of home he was instantly drawn to child modern!reader. Ever since then, they have been inseparable.

•Javier teaching them to play guitar and somehow getting a child sized one so it would be easier to play

•Smack Talking All day everyday, no one knows what they’re saying since they’re talking in Spanish, it makes everyone nervous.

Today was a good day!!

So I had ended up going to bed super late yesterday since I didn’t want to get out of bed to wash my face and brush my teeth until like 6 AM (I was texting a really sweet guy as well so that didn’t help JAJA) but when that time came around and I actually did that stuff, I finally knocked out.

I woke up around 12:30 (my narcolepsy is DEAD thank god) and had some yogurt and tea for breakfast. I helped our cleaning lady out with some questions (her family is going to Disney and she wanted me to help her buy tickets, I showed her how to find discounts and stuff while we were at it jeje) and chatted with her about my trip and other random stuff.

Pretty much right after she left, my dad came home and told me a friend of his and that person’s son were coming over to our house to play volleyball! The volleyballs we had were kinda old and crusty, so I went to Publix to see if they happened to sell any in their little beach section. They didn’t, so I went to Walgreens across the street; they ALSO didn’t, but this one pissed me off a little more because they DID have basketballs and soccer balls so that was ANNOYING. Knowing this, now I had to drive out of the woods and into the city to go to a Dick’s to get some new balls. Fortunately, though, I’d been meaning to go here to ask about getting a kayak and also restringing my tennis racket since one of the strings popped out, so it was all good!

So I get there, I wasn’t sure how many balls I was getting nor if I was going to get an inflatable kayak or come back at a later date with the intention of getting a hardshell, so I grabbed a shopping cart... I regretted this because I had to go up the escalator with the shopping cart and I felt kind of stupid JAJA! Nobody saw me, or paid me any mind at least, so it was all good. I talked with a kayak dude and he gave me pointers and tips and stuff, and I ended up deciding on a hardshell! I’ll have to go back at a later date to actually pick a specific one, though. After that, I wandered through for a little bit, I was considering getting a new racket but they’re expensive, so it’s probably better to just restring the one that’s broken. I grabbed some handle wraps, two Mikasa volleyballs, and headed out.

After that, I drove home, thankfully I got there at just about the same time our visitors came over! We played for about 3 hours or so, and me and my dad absolutely wiped the flooooooooorrrrr with those two. Volleyball is SOO fun and I really miss it!! It was also interesting to see how the other dad interacted with his son; the son is about 15, and he seemed super shy/reclusive, and to be honest, even uncomfortable! It reminded me of myself. I’m hoping he grows to have a better relationship with his father, or at the very least becomes more confident/comfortable with himself.

So, after that, my mom got home and I went to shower. When I got out, we watched TV while my dad was cooking some steak for dinner. I was snacking on some cheese and chorizos while I was waiting. (Also, sidebar, I’d had this really weird stomach twitching and stomach ache thing going on all day, I think it’s because I didn’t eat while driving down and had a light breakfast. I’m hoping it goes away by tomorrow.)

Once I ate and finally ripped myself away from the television, I went to my room to practice piano. It’s SOOO annoying that even a few days without playing makes me feel like I’ve lost all my practice. But, it’s ok! I played through some warmups, improvised a cute little version of “Le Festin” for the cutie I’m now crushing on, and then called it a night. I finally went and washed my face and brushed my teeth, and now I’m writing this and settling into bed for the night! Hopefully I’ll wake up early, since I’m not going to sleep TOOO late tonight, but usually I go to bed by midnight, so I need to go back to being disciplined with myself. I have a bunch of chores to do tomorrow, too, so it’d be nice to get up early enough to get them all done in the same day.

It wasn't long after that they arrived home in LA. Rose didn't stay in the house much, instead she walked the grey area, thinking.

A dog was in the park sniffing around, he saw Rose and growled, backing away. It was THE DOG, the one that started this mess.

Rose was surprised, but too tired to be mad. Instead, she kneeled and dug a snack from her bag, offering it to him with a sigh “Hey big guy….”

The dog approached her still looking fierce, almost as if he could smell the mob all over her. As he got closer he sniffed her hand and he caught a whiff of…..his master! The dog barked and took the snack running off.

Rose smiled and sighed, he was a cute guy. She started walking again, following the dog.

Madeve ran down the street to a little cafè and inn. The sign above the door read “Le Paon D’ivoire” Madeve entered through a little dog door in the side of the front door, a little bell jingling as he entered.

Rose looked at the inn curiously and walked in, she was a little hungry anyway. She walked in,smiling slightly as she watched madeve go in.

At the sound of the bell the woman behind the counter turned around and smiled, “salut! Bienvenue! I’ll be with you in a moment!” She turned around and finished the leaf latte art she was making and slid it over to a man who sat at the coffee bar. Madeve barked, “Madeve! Shh! Sorry...he usually doesn’t act this strange.” She wipes her hands off on a towel and smiles at Rose. “What can I do for you?”

“Oh um, just followed this big guy here and got curious.” The Owner smiled. Her eyes obviously looked like she needed a pick me up as she looked around “It's so cute here!”

“Oh thank you!” She smiled, “and I can tell exactly what you need.” She started pulling shots of coffee into a back and blue mug. “Madeve likes to wander but it’s rare that he ever brings people in.” She chuckled. “You must be special.” She stirred a cinnamon smelling syrup in with the shots before adding the steamed milk.

She chuckled and sat at the coffee bar “I..I doubt it. But thank you.” she put some cash on the counter and sighed happily at the smell.

The Owner set the cup and a plate with a croissant down in front of her. “It’s on the house, besides, it looks like you’ve had a rough night.” She leaned over the counter trying to be friendly.

Rose leaned over and put the cash in the tip jar before sighing “Rough few weeks actually. Guy troubles, you know?” She took a sip of coffee and groaned at the taste “This..is way too good.”

She blushed and smiled, “Thank you! Although I can’t take credit….my...friend thought of it. He called it the ‘Cat Call’ . I'll keep it coming. I’ve had my fair share of heart to hearts about men.” She did air quotes when she stated the name of the drink.

How ironic rose thought before looking up at the woman “Yeah? Sometimes i think it'd be best for me just to stay single…”

“Well, I’ve been single for 3 years. I’ve been doing alright. But I’m biased, I’m sure whatever man is causing you weeks of headache isn’t worth it.” She sighed Madeve leaning up against Rose’s leg.

Rose pat his head “Yeah.. but i still love him..before everything started i was gonna ask him to marry me...guess i got my hopes up for nothing.” She finished the coffee and sighed

“If you’ve been together for that long and this has just started happening, it may just be your man working through something really personal. Have you talked to him about it?” She picked up the cup and started another cup.

“Yeah. Apparently a lot happened with his..ex.” She mumbled “He refuses to get help and it was hurting me…”

The owner of the shop nodded, “he needs space. Once he gets over the heartache of his ex, then his mind should clear up and he’ll be ready to seek help.” She slid the cup over to her, before she continued what she was saying one of the guests called to her, “HEY LY! WHY DON'T YOU SING FOR US?!?! It’s such a nice day!” Lyra rolled her eyes and whipped around towards the guests, “BART! You know I don’t sing anymore! And if your band wants to keep receiving free food I suggest you stop bugging me about it.” Bart laughed and waved his hand at her.

And there on her shoulder was a nasty scar. It looked like a bullet had barely grazed her.

Rose looked at the scar for a moment and then looked away, she didn't want to pry, instead she smiled “Um… I sing a little bit. Maybe i could do a little show since you won't let me actually pay?” She giggled and stood.

With a wide smile Ly nodded, “knock yourself out, there’s records by the mic!” Madeve wagged his tail.

Rose walked over and chose a record, going over as the beginning notes of ‘Le festin’ started to play. Upbeat, soft, and a song ilya taught her.

The Owner was impressed by her good pronunciation. The entire cafe seemed interested and smiled. Ly hummed the tune to herself.

After Rose finished, she blushed, her heart aching slightly as she sat back down, embarrassed.

Ly applauded her, “that was impressive! You sounded so amazing!” She smiled and slid another cup of coffee towards her, “have you trained anywhere?”

Bart and his band started pounding their fists on the table wanting an encore….and for Ly to sing.

Rose smiled “No.. My boyfriend taught me french. And the song. He occasionally spoke it.” She looked at the band and laughed “I think they want more!”

“What do you think I should do to bend their will?!” She leaned in close and muttered with a soft laugh. Madeve sneezing in agreement.

Rose giggled “If you have a song, we could duet if you'd like. I enjoy the music.” She glanced at the men and smiled

“It’s been a few years….but I think I remember the choreography to one.” She smiled, “I’ll warm up the crowd, you choose our duet.”

She walked over to the mic and the entire cafe was watching, as she started to sing “Tangled up” commanding the attention of everyone, she moved with a certain level of sensuality. Walking on top of tables, from table to table as if she were born to do it.

Rose blushed and watched her in aw until getting ready for the duet, choosing the show stopping ‘La seine’ song that she’d learned to dance to.

The crowd roared as the song ended, it felt good sinking back into her old skin. Even if it was for just a few minutes. She returned to Rose. “You ready?”

“As i'll ever be.” She smiled and started the music, enjoying herself to the fullest.

Ly harmonized with her, knowing it was all for fun. She was used to being a star, but being in the background making someone else feel good. It was amazing, and Rose was such a good singer.

After they finished, Rose laughed “That was amazing! I have to go but…``Rose dug a card out of her bag and smiled “Keep in touch.” The card read R. Sagena, Caracal den co.

“I will. Come anytime,Madeve really likes your company!” She giggled, “which is weird, he’s usually clingy to me. You must be really special.”

“You know, i'm usually a cat person. But i think he’s an exception.” She smiled and left, driving home with a new smile.

xix. random fact?

well, it's not really a fact i think... i'm moving (again) but this time is to my father's house because my mum is moving to the south of the country... and i'm so fucking scared because we aren't close at all (i met him when i was 14) i mean, he seems nice enough, all of our interactions have been mostly pleasant but his wife (and probably he himself too) is a bit conservative in the brazillian traditional white family way (she's white cause she's a southern. i know yall think all latinos are poc,,,, but that's not true) but then again, that's something i had to live with all my life so i can handle casual homophobia and racism and sexism... but it will still be so weird cause i never been away from my mum too long (i'm... a momma's boy). i'm going next week i think, wish me luck.... (also he's got two dogs who won't leave me the fuck alone, i get out of the shower and they drool all over me, they know i'm a beta so they keep getting on top of me and since they're HUGE and i'm such a weakling i can't even get them off me and i can't scold them with a strong voice, i just can't do it... i mean, don't get me wrong i like them... but... they like me way too much and keep making me dirty.. i hate being dirty)
