Some time ago, before I cut contact with my dad, I would often contemplate his mindset. Not of why he was so lackluster in all manners of fatherhood but about his unbiased, objective few of me as a girl and, now, a woman.

On some obligatory level, I know my dad loves me. I think his perspective of what makes someone a “good Christian” demands this of him. And in a small percentage of the time we spent together, he might love me for the child he knew. And to hear that a father loses interest in his daughter when she grows up/develops the ability to defy and to think is not a new experience. There were telltale signs of it coming so I was fully prepared. But I expected a casual indifference when we got to the point we are now. He would lie about me to the family and retain his desperate image of a father “trying his best.” Like I said, I saw it coming years before.

But it didn't really play like that. Because while he definitely began to detach, there was this frustration and rage in his eyes when he spoke to me. When I called him out. When I didn't just shrug off what he said. He was so angry when I threatened to stop talking to him for a while and followed through. As a child, he couldn't understand why I chose to live with my mom in a homeless shelter over staying with him and his now ex-wife. And there are a handful of family facts and personal history that I won't just spill but I know for a fact play a part in this. I was more interested in his objective perspective of me, like I said.

And to be frank? My dad loves me in a very superficial way, but in no way likes me. My family is the type that say “blood is thicker than water” no matter what. Generations of abuse and neglect founded on the back of “respect” that is inherited rather than earned. My mom was the first to make me challenge that, and I think my dad resents her for that to this day. 

When I was younger, I considered him cool. Especially since he seemed supportive of my feminist ideology that I garnered very early on by just being with my mom. My thoughts then and now? How can a woman's place only be by a man's side when my mom has given me as much of the world as she can without one? I just wasn't buying. But he always told me he wanted me to be independent and strong. So I can give him that credit. No one in my life ever told me I couldn't be whatever I wanted to be, and that is a real blessing I don't take lightly.

But his support had a veil of contrasting expectations. I didn't have to wear makeup…but I should have my hair pressed or braided. I could wear pants instead of skirts…but you need to ask your mom to teach you how to shave. The role models he thrusted upon me were strong figures still deeply layered under a presentation that was appealing, especially to him. To him, they were still “women.” Strong but ever willing to submit. 

And his support always came with imaginings. When I inevitably became rich, he would joke that I could get him things. When I won a writing award as a kid, he didn't drive me home for twenty minutes until he finished boasting to his friend about me. He thought I was the most intelligent person he'd ever met. If I could just stop being so disagreeable and more presentable then the world would be my oyster.

And as an adult, hearing him speak, I could finally understand why my average intelligence seemed like such a world shattering achievement. Because to my father, I was intelligent in spite of being born female. I immediately thought back to all his interactions with women. How they were either dismissive or lewd. How he rolled his eyes when my stepmom would demand basic respect from him. And I'd laugh with him. [Go ahead and insert infamous quote about how it will not save the daughter.]

His perception of women was secondary. Adam's rib. He wanted to raise me as Eve and felt (and feels) cursed that he was bound by blood to Lilith. And the only Christian thing to do is spend the rest of his life trying to change me. And when I came out, that thin smile of support from him told me that he felt his ability to control not just slipping, but being yanked. I did not recognize men as authority. His only card he had and has left is that we are bound forever by blood.

But I don't care about blood. The water of strangers and women in my life and in this community has carried me further in life than blood ever has or, at this point, ever will.

ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?

Uh...not really but also kind of for my legal name? It was the name of a character in a soap opera my mom watched, and she liked it enough to use it for me.

My chosen name...also kind of falls under the same umbrella, but for different reasons, and, uh...comes with a story. So like--I was really into fantasy stories when I was a kid/teen (I say like I'm not still into them now), and I loved making up "fantasy" names, which...basically just meant shoving a bunch of letters together until I got something I thought sounded cool. One of those names was "Coriora." For whatever reason, I fell in love with this name, and it's shortened version, "Cori," and I used it for everything. Pokemon nicknames, random characters, a self-insert OC...

And my cat. Who I adopted a few months before I made my email and FF.net account. Which is when I officially started using the name "CoriShadowfang" as my primary username online. Teenage me didn't even have the thought in her mind that she could possibly identify with the name "Cori" enough to adopt it as her own, nor did she think of the potential consequences of sharing a name with her cat.

...On the plus side, it's funny to call my cat "Cori Sr.," and watch how people try to process that.

Uh...I think Friday night? I'm pretty sure it was about something I was planning for a story, aha. (I cry VERY easy, haha, and the thing that spurs it does not necessarily have to be sad.)

WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?

I was signed up for baseball, basketball, and soccer when I was a kid, though of those, soccer was the only one I actually liked. I ended up running cross country and track in high school (though after that ended up running only for fun, since, uh...the competitive part of that wasn't very enjoyable for me, aha). In college I did fencing, which I loved and often miss a lot, but there...really aren't many places that offer fencing around where I live. I did do some long sword for a while a couple of years ago; transition to that from fencing was an interesting experience, since the fencing muscle memory...did not go away. ("What do you mean I have to hold this with two hands?? ...What do you mean I can't just stab them?!") That ended up being pretty expensive, though, so I only got to take lessons for a few months. It was still fun, though!

DO YOU USE SARCASM?

Depends on the situation! I use it a lot less online, because I'm worried about coming across as, like...rude or mean. When I do use it, it's often toned down a lot. Offline, it depends on who I'm around, and how they react to it. (Or if I'm just...getting really frustrated. Then it tends to come out more.)

Uh, that's...a good question. Online, it's definitely their interests, and...I guess it's kind of also the same offline? If I'm given the opportunity, haha. Like--if I see you're wearing a Pokemon pin or reading a fantasy book or something, I'm immediately going to be focused on that, haha.

Probably unsurprisingly, lit/creative writing, haha. I also really liked most science classes, too; learning about nature was one of my favorite things in school, and any sort of labs where we could go outside and actually study plants/animals were amazing.

If money weren't a concern, and I could just do anything I wanted for the rest of my life without worrying about how to pay the bills...I would love to just write stories full time. Writing really is one of the things I'm the most passionate about, and I'd love to be able to pour my all into it without worrying about getting too burnt out or needing to take on extra jobs to make ends meet. Maybe one day...

So I don't know if everyone's family's are like this but in my family, when I say or do something that resembles one parent (usually my dad) the other (usually my mom) will point at the other parent jokingly accusing. That's what I'm thinking here. Like this kid makes this face and one of them just points and says something like "that's not from me".

This kid is both genuine and stubborn I feel. Yall remember Patcha from the Emperors new groove? That personality I feel.

I feel like this kid would have mastered the "we made eyecontact and now must make the obligatory smile" smile down.

It's not that they can't smile, it's that they can't on demand.

This gives vibes of "I'm sorry what are we talking about?"

Like this kid was in their head, doing whatever, hears their name and looks up making this face.

This would be a face (I think) seen fairly often around the kids school and house just because they like to be in their head more than outside it.

Imagine: the kids friend makes a terrible joke. Kid make this face because it was a bad joke but it was still kinda funny.

The kid makes this face when they know they've won an argument, especially if it was about something they know well.

I feel like it'd also get used as a "I told you so dumbass." Face. Like if their friend broke up with a toxic person that the kid knew and had said was toxic, but they don't wanna be mean and say "I told you so."

(my only real complaint is that this episode SHOULD have been a breather episode about fennec shand having fairly lighthearted shenanigans around tatooine and the outer rim as she finds muscle while boba fett learns to ride his rancor and attempts to corral his rowdy cyborg youths. there should have been a running joke where she can’t get a hold of din and then the episode ends basically where the actual episode did. then we go into the two part ending with the war with the pykes. as much as i liked actual episode 5 it should have been in the actual mandalorian where it belongs.)

but ok the absolute most important take away from this episode is that the next season of the mandalorian at least starts with din’s quest to find the sacred mandalorian skinny dipping spot. excellent.

god the whole first half with the armorer was really just full of strict mom with her favorite son back home after he flunked out of college vibes. like... i’m NOT happy but also... yes don’t worry you can fix it. anyway here’s the VERY expensive present i spent hours making for my new grandson tell him i say hi on your way to the sacred skinny dipping springs.

honestly my actual read on that situation is that she absolutely knew something was up from the minute he walked in injured in a fucking stupid way by his own weapon and correctly read that he was so weighted down by his own guilt and so afraid of disappointing what was left of his family and so angry at himself for dishonoring his religion and culture that it would mean his death to ignore it and be meaningless to just say he’s forgiven. so she lets paz fight him as proof he’s meant to wield the dark saber and sends him on a quest that’s very difficult but explicitly non-murder oriented so that he can eventually be a politically viable ruler.

i know a lot of fandom paints the children of the watch as a horrible extremist cult but like i actually don’t think anything in the show supports this? the whole helmet thing might seem extreme but uh... they’re fucking survivors of a major genocide??? din arguably survived TWO GENOCIDES???? honestly i’m gonna make the argument here that she has been consistently shown to be a kind hearted pragmatist in a way that does not suggest she’s an irrational foaming at the mouth fundamentalist. anyway i love the armorer and also poor paz. you know after din left paz was just like... REALLY? HIM?? *sigh* and then she pats him on the head and sends him off to make money and rescue some orphans.

*i actually think you could make an argument that by modern tv standards it wasn’t even a great episode of the mandalorian because god there was a lot of what right now feels like wasted time??? don’t get me wrong i love that he spends like half of it with peli working on a ship he has no business buying (PELI THE RAZOR CREST WAS HIS HOUSE!!!) but that whole sequence probably could have been cut at least in half... i actually wish more tv was willing to let their characters breath like that but its absolutely wild choice for a show with 8 episode seasons LET ALONE a show that’s actually about a completely different set of characters and problems and only has 7 episodes.  anyway i obviously loved it. 10/10 please include confirmation that luke was peli’s assistant when he was teen.

like any community with more than a few people, there have been ups and downs in the path few months. i wanted to add here as a general shout out that i have never felt so welcome and loved in a community that i originally would have thought would be more disjointed than what you might find on a forum. like, i’ve changed a lot thanks to you guys! i’ve been able to get over some of the hurdles of my social anxiety (i didnt jump over them so much as drag myself across the ground and painfully crawl over them) and i just... i feel good? i feel like people like me? there are still times where my anxiety insists i’m nothing but a useless burden, but i actually... feel like people enjoy having me around? holy shit!

i made some really cool new friends and got to know a different kind of roleplay community. im overall incredibly grateful for this wild and weird journey i’ve been on, and the journey certainly isn’t over by any means! i hope to keep seeing you guys around!

Loss (Yoosung)

I wrote this story some time ago lol. Time sure flies – just like my quality of writing, they fly away as time goes on apparently. Kappa. ~ Ion

Prompt: Person A is crying over Person B’s death. “Please don’t be sad if you have done badly. We all have untapped potential inside us, and as long as you find it, you can do it and succeed. That is my belief to the school body, as the school president.” As all the students applauded politely at the end of Yoosung’s speech, he could not find the person he was expecting for the most - Rika. He saw Zen, V and Jumin at the back of the hall - why would Rika be missing then? As they were about to take a picture together, Yoosung probed them. “Where’s Rika? Why isn’t she here?” Zen visibly flinched when Yoosung asked the question. Jumin glanced at V - for once, he seemed worried. “Why not we take a picture together first before I explain.” V pointed at the chair, encouraging Yoosung to sit first. Yoosung was frowning, clutching onto the bouquet of roses tighter before taking a seat. The lights flashed before Yoosung stood right back up again, asking about what happened to Rika again. There was a long pause before Zen answered. “Yoosung… Rika died. She had committed suicide.” “Wait, how? Why? She was fine at the last party!” “Yoosung, please calm down-” “Calm down? How can you ask me to calm down when Rika has now left RFA? And left me behind?” As Zen was trying to console him, Yoosung was just left numb. Zen must be lying. That must be it. He must be lying. No way Rika would commit suicide. But Zen would not lie about something this serious, right? “It’s true, Yoosung.” V kept his eyes down to the floor, avoiding eye contact from him. “What?” How could that be? Yoosung refused to accept that. Her innocent smile when she talked to him, the happiness she spread when she threw the parties, the pats she gave when he gave ideas to her about the upcoming parties… When did she even wanted to commit suicide? Words could not even comprehend the thoughts going through his mind before they all went to a single voice. “What happened to my cousin?” It must have been V’s fault. After all, they were together - about to get married, in fact. V must have done something which caused her to commit suicide. He walked up to V threateningly, demanding an answer. “V! Tell me what happened to Rika!” When there was no response from him, Yoosung just clenched his fist in frustration, wondering why he had not answered. “V, answer me!” V only walked away from Yoosung instead, leaving Jumin and Zen with him. Rika had committed suicide. The sentence resonated inside Yoosung’s  mind, as he stared at the carpet of Jumin’s limousine, still struggling to accept that fact. What was he going to do now that she was gone? She always told him to work hard, do his best and try his hardest. What did those words mean to him now that she was gone? Were all his efforts actually wasted after all? When Yoosung got back home, he just rushed into his room and locked it. He stared the puppy doll Rika handmade gifted to him. “Hug him if you miss me!” Yoosung embraced it, screaming in anguish before ripping them, throwing them at the computer. It landed perfectly at the keyboard, bringing the computer back to life. It showed a picture of him and Rika together, which only reminded him that he would never be able to take any more pictures with Rika now. He went up to the computer, reminiscing about the past. Doing volunteering work with Rika. Taking care of Sally with Rika. Seeing how Rika made all those parties a success, like magic. How long had he been crying now, to the point his tears were totally dried up now? He was just staring at the computer, still sniffling and giving out weak, exhausted sobs. The screen blinked, beeping to give Yoosung an alert before one of his friends messaged him in Tweeter. Ringabel: yo ys you want LoLoL lolololol Yoosung was rather doubtful. As the school president, he should set an example to the school body that games were bad and they should focus more on studies instead - however for some reason, he could not be bothered anymore. After all, he had graduated as one - he not the school president anymore. Yoosung: Sure. But I need to download it first, right? Ringabel: yes yes! OMG ys is playing with us??? OMG I need to introduce you to the school guild Yoosung: School guild? Ringabel: it’s called Deathgems Ringabel: come come just download we’ll explain later Ringabel: the game isn’t that big it should only take five to complete installing Yoosung got curious, which he then downloaded it. It was quick and fast, and when he entered he was really surprised when he received an invitation to “Deathgems”. He accepted. Ringabel: welcome to Deathgems!!!!! The character soon spawned at a corner of the game, leaving poor Yoosung now confused and wondering what he should do. Ringabel: okay now go bot Yoosung clicked on the bottom of the map as he followed the pop-ups, explaining how to play the game. As he continued, he started learning about how Tiz and Agnes were strong partners matched together, Edea was incredibly good at playing alone, while Ringabel knew strategically how to guide the rest of the team to victory. While Yoosung took some time to learn, he slowly managed to get a grasp on the game and finally understood how to play it. He soon understood the character and got absorbed into it. How did he not know about this game before? It was so fun! He was shouting, yelling, having the ride of his life as he got killed, or the enemies got killed. And then there was the climax where either team would do their best to kill one another, to the point where everyone actually died, so nobody won the fight. They were laughing so much by that time, complaining how bad they were. By this time Yoosung was really comfortable with one another, pretty much opening to them. As the enemies’ crystal burst into tiny pieces, the screen lighting up victory once again. Ringabel spammed smileys and happiness to others while everyone joined in, happy with their constant victories even though Yoosung was only still new. Edea soon explained that she needed to sleep before the others soon slowly agreed and left for bed, leaving Yoosung alone. He checked the time. “Wait, it’s 4 am already?” Yoosung was shocked about how much he played, and how he actually had not completed any of his work. Rika would definitely- Oh. Yoosung bit his lip, returning back to the reality that his cousin had already died. Tears threatened to fall again, while he slowly went to bed and plopped onto it. It was different this time - he could not feel anything. Yoosung was just numb all over. He was too tired to cry, too tired to be angry at V, too tired to even pick up the call that apparently someone was still trying to reach him. He just left the phone vibrating as he slowly fell asleep, sinking in a never ending dark abyss. — “Yoosung! Time for breakfast!” Yoosung pushed away an arm which was shaking him, frustrated. “I want to continue to sleep…” “Kim Yoosung!” Yoosung immediately shot up, awake as he scrambled to wear his clothes. His mother took the chance to leave while Yoosung rushed to pull his hoodie. “Sorry, I’m coming! Please don’t be angry anymore!” As he walked out, his mother only chided him for his outfit. “We’re going out for breakfast, let’s go. Your father and sister are already waiting.” Family breakfast? Yoosung could not help but feel sour about it. Family meals… That was how Yoosung met Rika for the first time. “I want to be alone, mom. It’s okay, I’ll skip breakfast.” He ran back into his room, locking the door behind him as his mother started banging on the door, calling him worriedly. Tears only rolled down his eyes as he went back to bed again, before closing them. Why did Rika die…? — By the time his family came back, he had already woken up. He was playing LoLoL again, this time with other people in Deathgems. He was shouting away again, laughing when the others cracked a joke, before screaming again about how he was about to die. For some reason, gaming was the only thing that made him feel slightly happier. It helped him forget about the pain of losing Rika, at least for a while. Days later. Yoosung had now not come out of his room, but when he did, he only chugged down a few cups of water and ate some food his mother had prepared before going back into the room. Three weeks after. Yoosung would take the food and drinks into his room when it was time for his meals, before going back into his room again. The time he came back out would be when the next meal is ready. There was always constant yelling until 4 am, and the rest of the family are angry about it. His mother had scolded him off before about it, but he still continued to do it once in a while. By then, they had already tolerated for months. “Yoosung, it’s the first day of college! You need to go to school now!” Yoosung was still playing his games, yelling and screaming loudly. He was wearing a dirty hoodie, shaking slightly as he slammed onto the keyboard, grumbling at the enemies. “Wait wait, not there, don’t engage- Nooooo! Why did you start fighting?” The floor was scattered with chips and dirty clothing. Dirt and dust were already collecting at the corners of the room. As his mother switched his computer off, Yoosung could only whine before keeping quiet and starting to change his clothes for school. As she left, he just started to slip off his hoodie and started wearing his uniform for college. What exactly happened which made him enter into college again - in fact, with a scholarship too? He shrugged as he could not be bothered to give a damn to the world anymore. Dragging his feet out of the house, he walked past a dog which was wagging his tail happily, barking as it was chasing a butterfly. For some reason, he would use to laugh at it - now, he could barely even bring a smile on his face. He opened the chat - Seven was online, saying to work hard, do his best and try his hardest in school. Somehow, it felt familiar, but Yoosung could not pinpoint it anymore. It felt like nonsense.
