im not a lesbian but i notice how quickly gay headcanons for men who have canonical relationships with women are explained away and given justification (which i support and do) but when you headcanon a female character who has canonically been in a relationship with a man as a lesbian, suddenly there's an issue and ppl start claiming "bi erasure" or whatever for a character who typically has 0 canonical sexual orientation. it's interesting. im sure a lesbian could give a much more comprehensive and analytical response to this but. i just think about it a lot.

A hypothesis

(This isn't meta, this is a headcanon)

The idea that the sexualities mismatch between the real world characters and their headspace sleep paralysis demon version stuck with me so I wanna explore it more.

Sunny is the most clear-cut out of all four. He's embarrassed when people imply he has to like a close friend just because she's a girl and then proceeds to have night terrors about her being in love with him. His escapist fantasy world is one where he ignores all her advances. He has been holding hands with the same boy since he was seven, and he can't quite define how that makes him feel. Creative as he may be, he lacks the words to express himself and the social clues and internal knowledge to fully define his feelings and identity, so his sexuality is probably a mystery even to himself for the longest time, if he ever does figure himself out amid all the other things going on in his psyche.

Basil is a simple boy. He sees boys, he blushes. He sees girls, he blushes. His heart is a little too big and now he's giggling and averting his eyes.

Omori is where it gets interesting. He's meant to be a defence mechanism, a way to stray from the truth of the real world and live in a fantasy—and by every metric, part of that 'being normal and loved by everyone' is being straight and conforming to his friends' expectations. Omori represents trauma, fear, and shame, and while the shame over his identity may be less visible or imminent than his trauma over Mari, it still is floating around somewhere in that pool of insecurities and self-loathing. However, as it turns out, there are certain feelings that Omori is really upset about feeling that no amount of repression can bury, and why do they have to be aimed at the thorn in Omori's side? When even the part of you that represents aggressive performative heterosexuality is bisexual and in a situationship with another guy, you know you've got some more soul searching to do.

Stranger wasn't ever meant to have anything to do with romance, identity, and sexuality in the first place. He wasn't even meant to exist but came about anyway when Sunny's conscience battled with his immediate emotional and psychological needs. It is not within Sunny's nature to leave any of his characters unfleshed—and you an argue that everything in headspace, even the metapsychological representations of his mind, are original characters—and so, Stranger evolved into something more. Something with feelings, thoughts, and an identity. Sunny knows that the real Basil likes both boys and girls, yet Stranger very much mirrors headspace Basil in that in an ideal world, he only has eyes for Sunny, and his sexuality reflects that. It seems that Stranger is less interested in the dreamer himself, though, and more in the vessel that was given his own mind as time went on. As much as his heart hurts for the dreamer, Stranger and Omori have a special bond that supersedes anything else he knows.
