+ DORIAN / STEPS OF CORA & INES' TRAILER
"Okay, but what do you think about when you're, you know, multiplying?" Cora clarifies her question, ever curious about her new friends' abilities. She shifts on the step of the trailer, glancing at him with a furrowed brow. "Is it intuitive or do you like...I dunno, have a, uh," she searches for the phrase before snapping her fingers, "catch phrase? Like...gotta split! Or uh, multiply time motherfuckers," Cora points two finger guns at Dorian with a laugh. "Maybe hasta la dupesville, baby." She's joking now, but her curiosity remains. @manybcdthings

kinks- voyeurism/exhibitionism, taboo, infidelity, cnc, breeding etc
cora fell forward, bracing her palms against the railing as she bent at the waist, back arching inwards in a languid stretch. she exhaled a drawn sigh that followed the rolling of her shoulders, taking a moment to simply be- startling at the touch of a hand at her lower back, cora's breath hitched, familiar with their hold, easily recognising who had joined her. ' you shouldn't be here, ' she scolded lightly, though she smiled, her stare scanning the other buildings around them for prying eyes. despite her words, cora found herself spreading her legs as she bent forward further at the pressure of their hand up her back, cunt conditioned by their presence to slicken her thighs, wet and aching to be filled like only they could. ' anyone could see us ... '

it's always "you need to quit using the demon blade that is corrupting your soul and encouraging you to shed oceans of blood in its name cold turkey, you need to stop right now" and never "let's discuss some harm reduction techniques that will help you to form a more positive, safer relationship with the demon blade"

CORA BURKHART: I DON'T NEED NOR WANT TO HUMILIATE YOU, YOU'RE DOING FINE ON YOUR OWN. cruelty. why was clarice surprised that cora had chosen to be so cruel to her, after everything else she's done? more than that, why does it sting? why does it cut her, beneath her skin, straight to the heart that had been wrapping itself around the other woman for months? thinking about her heart, clarice has to wonder if cora even has one. if what they felt for each other was real, or something clarice had fabricated simply because someone had finally made her feel less alone in the world. she supposed the answer had to be no - knowing that cora has killed and lied and hurt everyone around her, it just didn't seem possible. lungs burn as she inhales the cold air around them, breath becoming a small cloud as she exhales again. hands are steady as she points the gun at the other woman, loaded, the safety off, her finger a centimeter off from pulling the trigger. clarice forces the burn of tears from her eyes. no weakness could be shown in this moment - she knew cora would take advantage of it in an instance. 'i don't feel humiliated, cora. i feel used by you,' clarice is honest in this moment, adjusting her grip just so to aim at cora's chest. 'an' i promise you, it won't happen again,' @roseguided.

CORALINE “CORA” DEVEREAUX is a PANTOMIME and 29 years old. Originally from PARIS, FRANCE, they have been with the circus for 2 MONTHS. They look like ELLA PURNELL and possess the ability of INTANGIBILITY. They are known to be CURIOUS, DETERMINED, and FREE-SPIRITED, but can also be BRAZEN, REACTIVE, and REBELLIOUS.
CHARACTER THEMES: distance, longing, potential, belonging, transience
SUMMARY OF ABILITY: She possesses the ability to pass through matter, known as "phasing", by passing her atoms through the spaces between the atoms of the matter she wants to move through. In this way, she and the outside matter can temporarily merge without interacting, each being unharmed during the process, making her, for all intents and purposes, intangible. Hence, she can easily walk through walls and barriers and when attacked, she can shift into a "phasing" state to allow any oncoming danger to harmlessly pass through her. She passes through matter at the same speed at which she was moving beforehand, phasing through it with no loss in momentum. She is also able to allow additional matter she is in contact with, living or otherwise, to become intangible and phase along with her.
BIO
Cora was born in Paris, France to a well-to-do family. She was intellectual and curious about the world around her and could be found running around the city with friends.
She was the youngest of several siblings and like them, was sent to boarding school in Sweden for high school.
Everything seemed fine until she turned 15 and she began to feel off. She’d drop things more easily and get headaches frequently. One night, she was having a nightmare, she felt like she was falling only to wake up screaming, phasing through her bed and several floors below to another dorm. No one understood what was going on, and those who might have kept their mouths shut.
Referred to as “the incident”, it didn’t take long for rumors to spread about Cora and her abilities continued to be problematic. She lasted about another two weeks before she was withdrawn by her parents. They told her never to tell anyone what was going on. Things were still difficult after a year, and there were more incidents that occurred, so they moved Cora to a family home in Normandy.
It wasn’t as fast paced as Paris but it ended up being good for her. The water provided peace and space to think. She had a tutor and despite missing out on the life she could’ve had, Cora was still scared of herself until she gradually began to learn more about her abilities and practice in a less public space. She used that intelligence and her natural curiosity and began to research what she could about matter and molecules and everything in between.
She remained in Normandy for several years before finally gaining enough control of her abilities to feel comfortable going out into the world again.
Cora still felt like she couldn’t get close to anyone, always fearful of hiding who she was. Especially because she heard rumors. Everyone had. About odd things happening and then people disappearing. Something seemed off about it and so she kept to herself for the most part. Traveling around the world.
Eventually, she cut off her parents as well, when they reached out claiming they had someone who could help change things for her entirely. As tempting as it would have been when she was 15, Cora in her 20s couldn’t imagine life any other way. Eventually those people who they claimed could help finally came after Cora.
She was on the run for 2 years before eventually finding the Night Circus a year ago. She’d returned to Normandy and was promptly scouted by Genevieve Westwood who invited her to the show and later, convinced her to stay.
She’s been with them for about two months, and has nearly perfected her act as a mime. Her act has her using her abilities to their fullest potential, creating an act that’s full of thrills and laughter for all. She enjoys being able to use the abilities she spent so long hiding and is grateful to the Circus for giving her a home. She’s made fast friends with some members and is ever curious about their skills, learning about them all as they hit the road.
OTHER
CONNECTIONS: Older siblings who have abilities that she never knew about. They probably kept them hidden from the family. Could've been searching for Cora and found the Circus, or could've found the Circus and then found Cora. Open!
ACCENT: Cora is from France, but her tutors were good and American TV and her years practicing alone in Normandy mean her accent isn't very noticeable. Also, traveling all over the world, she spent a few years traveling through America and perfecting her accent on the road.

The author, Angela Hovak Johnston.
Johnston and Marjorie Tungwenuk Tahbone, traditional tattoo artist.
Catherine Niptanatiak: "I designed my own, something that represents me and who I am, something that I would be proud to wear and show off, and something that would make me feel confident and beautiful. . . . I have daughters and I would like to teach them what I know. I would like for them to want to practice our traditions and keep our culture alive."
Cecile Nelvana Lyall: "On my hand tattoos, from the top down, the triangles represent the mountains. . . . The Ys are the tools used in seal hunting. . . . The dots are my ancestors. . . . I am so excited to be able to truly call myself and Inuk woman."
Colleen Nivingalok: "The tattoos on my face represent my family and me. The lines on my chin are my four children -- my two older boys on the outside protecting my daughters. The lines on my cheeks represent the two boys and the two girls on either side. The one on my forehead represents their father and me. Together, we live for our children."
Doreen Ayalikyoak Evyagotailak: "I have thought about getting traditional tattoos since I was a teenager. . . . When I asked the elders if I could have my own meaning for my tattoos, they said it wouldn't matter. My tattoos symbolize my kids."
Mary Angele Takletok: "I always wanted traditional tattoos like the women in the old days. I wanted them on my wrists and my fingers so I could show I'm Inuk."
Melissa MacDonald Hinanik: "As a part of celebrating my heritage and revitalizing important traditional customs that form my identity, I believe I have earned my tattoos. I am a beautiful, strong young woman. I am a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend, and an active community member. I reclaim the traditional customs as mine, I re-own them as a part of who I am."
Star Westwood: "We still have some of our culture, but some things are slowly dying. Having tattoos helps us keep our culture alive. . . . . My tattoos represent my dad and my dad's dad. The ones closest to my wrists represent my sisters."

National Tattoo Day
July 17 is National Tattoo Day. To celebrate, we present some images from Reawakening Our Ancestors' Lines: Revitalizing Inuit Traditional Tattooing, compiled by Angela Hovak Johnston, co-founder with Marjorie Tahbone of the Inuit Tattoo Revitalization Project, with photographs by Inuit photographer Cora DeVos, and published in Iqaluit, Nunavut by Inhabit Media Inc. in 2017.
For thousands of years, Inuit have practiced the traditional art of tattooing. Created the ancient way, with bone needles and caribou sinew soaked in seal oil, sod, or soot, these tattoos were an important tradition for many Inuit women, symbols etched on their skin that connected them to their families and communities. But with the rise of missionaries and residential schools in the North, the tradition of tattooing was almost lost. In 2005, when Angela Hovak Johnston heard that the last Inuk woman tattooed in the old way had died, she set out to tattoo herself in tribute to this ancient custom and learn how to tattoo others. What was at first a personal quest became a project to bring the art of traditional tattooing back to Inuit women across Nunavut.
Collected in this book are photos and stories from more than two dozen women who participated in Johnston's project. Together, these women have united to bring to life an ancient tradition, reawakening their ancestors' lines and sharing this knowledge with future generations. Hovak Johnston writes: "Never again will these Inuit traditions be close to extinction, or only a part of history you read about in books. This is my mission."
Reawakening Our Ancestors' Lines forms part of our Indigenous America Literature Collection.
