ωα XUE YANG is the omega that you would never in your life think 'my future husband' at the first and subsequent meetings.

That he is evil, that his fate is bad, that he carries misfortune, that he is problematic, that you will definitely regret it — yes; but that he will become your omega? Never. Marriage and a marks is not just 'love' and mutual obligations; this is an inter-clan event where you make not just 'three bows', but radically change your whole life, especially with omega, in whose eyes there is always a shine that has nothing generative or innocent in it, but destroying and cursed.

You knew from the very beginning with whom you were linking fate and life.

That didn't stop you from digging nails into his waist when fangs left a binding mark on his clean neck.

Do you love him? Rather 'yes' than 'no' — no matter what, it's hard not to like him, even if someone finds your tastes strange, especially with this difference between you. To believe in 'kinship of souls' or 'destiny' is painful, even if this is clearly what XUE YANG is trying to tell you, smiling sweetly and making eyes at you, but your omega is so fascinating and pretty as murderous and jealous, as if all charm is outrage at the damage caused by the absence of any morality, — except that where you, like the owner, take him away and forbid.

It's even more surprising only when he agrees with you, snuggling up to your side, rubbing against you, leaving an aggressively territorial smell on your body and clothes, and promising that he won't do that anymore... At least you don't see any signs that he's doing it again. You don't believe in 'the power of love' or 'the power of kindness' — but when the leash is pulled, the dog goes; and even if "another case of how alpha tamed a rabid omega!", you're just smiling, not agreeing and not refuting. In the end, 'domestication' implies complete submission due to long and constant pressure, from which the animal becomes harmless and calm; but can you call your omega submissive and calm, and, moreover, 'harmless'?

You can't even call him 'not dangerous', let alone 'harmless' for interacting with anyone — but you don't need it; watchdogs should be aggressive and cruel, and since your sweet smiling husband behaves with you as with the greatest jewel, which anyone can't talk about if a person wants to stay with their eyes, and a long conversation with who will only lead to cutting off the tongue, then you are more than ready to accept and show understanding, like a pure celestial seeking to cleanse a vicious soul from a dark sediment, showing the wild omega the charm of being a delicate flower for his alpha.

... Who is safer to leave puppies with? Who to rely on if hard times come? Who will be better able to serve you arrows during the attack, follow you during the escape and handle your wounds after the battle?

Of course, you could have chosen a meek and gentle omega, with whom you would be safe and calm while they dutifully served you — but you were chosen by the most aggressive and desperate omega, promising to be the most perfect for you (even if he had to kill all the others so that you had no choice), and you chose him — voluntarily.

And this is important.

The dog chooses the only owner, entrusting his life and future to them, but it is the owner who chooses what to do with the dog. Never the other way around. And if you don't want the dog to cling to your throat and chew through your chest, then you have to hold it so tightly that it can't even move.

“I won't let you go.”

It's mutual.

ωα XUE YANG is very jealous — and possessive. Your scent is always on his body as well as his on you; to the extent that others no longer remember which of the two of you smells. XUE YANG doesn't care how vulgar it may look when the mixture of his and your fragrance doesn't leave body, especially if your fragrance is something 'atypical' and causes a certain reaction among omegas and alphas — he wears it as an achievement, as a trophy that has traces all over his body; starting from kisses and hickeys and ending with bruises and scratches — he is untamed, but you are ready to make attempts to refute this, treating him like a wild dog who does not want to understand where his place is, even knowing that he will never really stop trying to get out of these boundaries and will regularly try to bite through the leash to attack and feast on you.

The relationship with him does not have any definite 'end' on the scale of progress, where you can finally relax, knowing that he will not break out anymore — and if you kept him from escaping, it would be much easier, but to keep him from not trying to own you and be the only one who is in your life is much more difficult and problematic. XUE YANG has no 'moral boundaries' — life has taught him that — and knows that what he has will not necessarily be his forever.

He can't let anyone else have you.

And when his sharp fangs playfully bite you just to lick right away, you can only wind his hair around your fist, letting him feel that you are always ready to push him away as soon as he crosses the border and causes pain.

A few demonstrations are enough for him to learn at least this — even if you can freely bite his neck and shoulders until they bleed, especially when you press him firmly against the bed, wall or floor, leaving a mark on his neck, from which small drops flow down, although you can understand from the trembling in his body that his more what suits it, even if he continues to tease tease tease

ωα XUE YANG used to rely on the smell. In a world where any fragrance has a meaning and a source, and there is nothing 'superfluous', his sense of smell has always been especially sharp and tenacious, catching even those notes that others are unable to catch.

"Intuition" says someone; "stinks" echoes XUE YANG hoarsely when he feels someone else's smell on your body, even if he just entered the room smelling of incense after you took a bath. You don't know how he does it — it's like his nose is even more sensitive, but not at all the way people think; he does not need to feel a literal smell, he feels something even more subtle, as if there is something else in someone else's fragrance that touches his receptors and finds a response in his body and brain.

The whole world is a huge garbage dump for him, the stench in which is unbearable, no matter if he is in a slum or in some noble society where they take a bath three times a day — and you?

You smell like the cleanest and most desirable thing in the world.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that it was your smell that blew his head off, because you smell so animal-like; not like a stray mutt or a street cat smells, but something that triggers something primal and natural in him, making everything inside him want to plunge into you, get under the skin and stay forever.

When the bottom of his stomach almost painfully pulls, although his heat is still a few weeks away, XUE YANG knows that you are somewhere nearby, even if he does not see you — body reacts to you with the most animal and irresistible impulse, and the fact that you seem so pure and unattainable makes him frantically try to become more worthy and to get higher, to become much better, much more decent — to get to you and bite into your neck, pulling you down after him.

When a cat climbs up a tree after a bird, it doesn't do it to fly like a bird does.

And when he presses against you again and again, inhaling your scent, wrapping his arms around you and squeezing tightly, you are sure that with the same success in his understanding you could be a half-dead mouse in the hands of a well-fed cat, over which the cat carefully puts sharp teeth, preparing to gnaw through the skin and leave a bleeding trail that does not a few more days will pass — his cute fangs are as sharp as a razor.

... Of course, XUE YANG doesn't consider you that way — especially when you hold tightly by the throat to the bed, almost suffocating him, looking down not with arrogance, but with authority, which at the same time makes him want to purr and obey and at the same time try to scratch your skin and make you look up at him.

Bad omega.

“Oh, really? I thought you liked this one, since you reek of some bitch again.”

... Xue Yang loves — adores — your scent and is ready to live forever surrounded only by it, taking your clothes and climbing into your arms.

But because of this, those moments when you smell of someone else excite in him the thirst for blood and possessive aspirations even more.

ωα XUE YANG doesn't build many nests before you start living together as spouses — in the end, he slept in your room much more often and returned to himself only if you insisted that you did not want even more rumors and damage to his reputation (as if the fact that he regularly flirts with you and behaves like a sunny arrogant spoiled darling while for everyone else he is a cruel heartless bully is not sufficient proof of his frank and shameless adoration) or yours (although here you are also sure that no omega will dare to take care of you after XUE YANG openly showed what will happen to the one who decides), but he obeys just to say capriciously the next morning that he doesn't want to go anywhere, teasing you.

But after you become a couple? Your whole room is filled with nests — your bed is one huge nest, in which he weaves around you like a vine around a strong tree, not letting go a millimeter from his strong embrace.

(Where are you going? To other omegas?)

Your clothes regularly turn out to be a building material, which is why you have to go to tricks and take away from his oldest nests — and although you are sure that this is nothing more than another of his tricks, especially when a hand is abruptly stretched out from there and drags you inside with a rather snide purr, you soon get used to it.

Even if you are more than aware of all his shortcomings, you cannot deny that the sight of him taking the form of a ball, wrapping around you like an affectionate cat, makes you want to stroke him and bask, ignoring the sharp claws and cunning glint in his eyes.

He is your husband, after all, and you have to take responsibility for him, even if sometimes he smells of blood much stronger than he should — but you are also working on this.

Or use it — in any case, you mostly accept it as it is.

ωα His heat is short, but strong, and if earlier you thought that he was wild, then during the estrus your main problem is to keep him under control and make sure that the claws and fangs are only where you are ready to have bruises, scratches and bites later.

And XUE YANG prefers the same way — wildly and rudely, so that the imprint of your hands remains around his neck while you force him to obey, pointing him to his place; and although in his normal state he is sensitive to the topic of whether they look at him from top to bottom, from bottom to top or as an equal, during the heat he does not mind at all that you do not give him any attempts to change his position — if you do not want to end up with a scratched chest, feel hot tongue licking drops of blood while he presses you firmly to the bottom of the nest, growling gutturally like a wild animal, while his claws dig into your skin, leaving marks.

He is more than in connection with his animal side and his ego is closer to the ego of a wild street dog, who is used to constantly checking his status and growling in attempts to change his position, even knowing that in response you can easily force him back to a state of submission — and from that, sharp fangs dig into the skin greedily and desperately, satisfying the desire to get enough of you before you have time to take away this intoxicating feeling, even if nothing prevents you from simultaneously indulging his desire to feel the right to have you and at the same time not giving him control, which, you know, will only lead to even more destructive things, since XUE YANG will never be satisfied until you are completely at his mercy — in such a right of possession in which the living cannot be.

... When you gently kiss his forehead, letting him lie calmly in front of you, receptive and defenseless, showing you his most vulnerable moments, giving himself completely to your hands and desires while his body is gently filled, finding pleasure in all-consuming hugs and touches, trustingly rubbing his nose against your neck or cheek, wrapping weak arms around your neck — for the first time, he can finally relax, entrusting himself and a sense of control to you, even knowing the risk he is taking.

And you know that this is your real husband, whom you married just for the sake of such moments.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part one

The juniors are arguing because Sizhui said that some demonic cultivators might have good intentions. According to Jin Ling that means that Sizhui is celebrating the murders of Jin Ling's parents, or something.

(Actor) Peixin Qi uses forehead-squinching as a primary acting tool, which would be perfectly fine if he wasn't playing a character with a red dot between his eyebrows.

He goes on to say that Wei Wuxian is the evillest of them all, way eviller than Xue Yang. Which in sheer numbers of victims, is probably a fair point. But Xue Yang was way more of a dick.

Ouyang Zichen is all of us when he asks Jin Ling to chill the fuck out.

Sizhui apologizes even though Jingyi is ready to throw down on his behalf. It's unclear if this helps, because Hanguang-Jun chooses this moment to arrive. He immediately defuses the situation with the power of stinkeye.

More Than Meets the Eye

Many differences between CQL and the novel are adaptational choices - Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's deep, early friendship; the yin iron plot, Jiang Cheng being loveable, etc. Changes like that, I normally don't point out, because adaptations are AUs, in my view, and can be enjoyed separately from their sources.

Other changes are driven by censorship, however, and in those cases I think it's fair to look to the novel and its less-censored adaptations for a peek at what's happening off camera. Particularly when there are scenes and interactions in The Untamed where the show seems to be deliberately pointing to the novel to fill in the blanks.

This moment on the stairs is one such scene. In the show, Lan Wangji carries liquor upstairs to Wei Wuxian, and the juniors react with shock; Jingyi drops his chicken out of his mouth and Sizhui stuffs it back in there.

They are shocked because he bought liquor, and that's the extent of their reaction.

In the Donghua, Manhua, and Novel, Lan Wangji is dragging Wei Wuxian up those stairs, having drunkenly tied him up with his headband.

First he stops to show his prize to the juniors, who have basically the same reaction in every version of the story, including Jinygi dropping his chicken and Sizhui stuffing it back in his mouth. In the novel, however, Sizhui does that to stop Jingyi from saying anything to Lan Wangji & his captive.

The liquor, in all versions, is a clear sign of how much Lan Wangji has mellowed since his youth. In case we need another reminder, we learn here that he let Sizhui get a tattoo on his finger.

Every parent will tell you, you gotta pick your battles.

Returning to to the timeline in which no visible bondage is occurring, Wei Wuxian is sitting around in the room upstairs waiting for Lan Wangji. Wasn't he busy talking to Lan Xichen when Lan Wangji went into the inn to shut the kids up? How did he get upstairs before Lan Wangji? Never mind, never mind.

Wei Wuxian goes to look out the window and Wen Ning appears, hanging off the roof like a dork, or like someone who has seen that one Spider-Man movie and is hoping for some upside-down kissing.

Wen Ning asks if Jin Ling is the kid he halfway orphaned, and Wei Wuxian says yes.

Then he hears Lan Wangji coming, and Wen Ning falls to the ground for no reason.

Wei Wuxian urgently shoos Wen Ning away, trying to hide him from Lan Wangji.

Wen Ning acts way too clueless for someone who spends so much time third-wheeling.

There's no in-world reason for Wei Wuxian to hide Wen Ning; They fought side-by side in Yi City, and they were all together for A-Qing's burial. There's not a problem between him and Lan Wangji.

Once again, the novel provides the missing information. Wei Wuxian is hiding Wen Ning because Lan Wangji is hella jealous even when he's sober. Wen Ning fell to the ground because drunk Lan Wangji leapt through the window and kicked him.

In the novel, Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji's evening ends with a game of tag that's loaded with sexual tension, followed by a kiss...followed by Lan Wangji literally knocking himself out to avoid taking advantage of Wei Wuxian.

Lan Wangji does everything in the most extreme way possible.

In the live action, the most sexually charged part of their interaction is this positively sinful hip thrust that Wei Wuxian gives when he turns around at the window.

If you've seen Xiao Zhan dancing, you know this is not an accident.

Unlike the novel's perpetually clueless protagonist, live-action Wei Wuxian clearly knows he's on a date right now.

...and he's enjoying every minute of it. He's delighted that Lan Wangji has provided *good* liquor, rather than the rotgut he's able to afford himself.

As he pours for Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji points out that both of their brothers know who WWX is at this point. Wei Wuxian isn't happy about it but he says they can't do anything. Which is...not correct.

He tries once again to get Lan Wangji to tell him how he recognized him, and Lan Wangji responds by asking him why his memory sucks so much.

Wei Wuxian says "you try dying by falling from a great height TWICE and see how your brain likes it." That's what he should have said, anyway.

This whole thing about his memory isn't actually important in the live action, even though it keeps being mentioned. He's forgotten the name of their song because he was delirious when he heard it; otherwise his memory seems perfectly fine.

I think this might be another instance of the live action giving a wink to novel readers in the audience, because in the novel Wei Wuxian forgot Lan Wangji's confession of love. Which, like WangXian, was presented in a cave while WWX was delirious; Lan Wangji is not great at choosing his moment.

Anyway, this may be why Lan Wangji seems to take Wei Wuxian's memory problems personally, despite having very little in-show reason to be upset.

Lan Wangji changes the subject by asking Wei Wuxian to go to Jinlintai with him, to search for Nie Mingjue's head. Sounds like a perfect romantic getaway for a boy and his favorite necromancer.

Just as Wei Wuxian starts to ask what Zewu-Jun will think, Zewu-Jun and his cheekbones come into the room.

He's taken time to think things over--a concept the rest of the cultivation world could stand to learn about, incidentally--and he agrees that they should investigate.

Note: the non-CQL illustrations come from the MDZS manhua, which is complete online (mangadex.org includes the uncensored extra bits), and is about halfway through being published in English by Seven Seas. It's delightful and I highly recommend it.

"because if you are who i think you are, then you need to be escorted to prison this second." perhaps not the best way to begin the interaction but it was not something that song lan wanted to play around with. he was dangerous and he needed to be detained.

MDZS Fanon VS Canon: 7/?

Mo Xuanyu and Xue Yang were Jin disciples at the same time

Rating: FANON – SUPPORTED

There's a not insignificant amount of fanworks that depict Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu interacting during their time as guest disciples of the Lanling Jin sect. While we do not have any concrete evidence that the two characters ever met, it is (mostly) possible to discern whether they were guest disciples at the same time.

The timeline of Mo Dao Zu Shi is often hard to follow because specific years and dates are rarely given in the books, but using context clues, I can piece together a rough estimate of when both characters were present at Golden Carp Tower and use that to identify any points they may have overlapped.

Xue Yang:

Xue Yang's time as a guest disciple is easier to define, so I'll start with him. The earliest time we see him, chronologically, is during the flower-viewing banquet that Lanling Jin held directly following the end of the Sunshot Campaign:

Xue Yang was extremely young at this point in time. Although his face still had a boyish cast to it, he was already very tall. He also wore a Sparks Amidst Snow robe, the very picture of carefree youth as he stood beside Jin Guangyao, like a spring breeze caressing the willow. (Seven Seas Ch. 10, Part 2)

He is already a disciple of the Jin sect, although he hasn't been one for long, according to Nie Mingjue's reaction:

Nie Mingjue frowned. “Xue Yang from Kui Prefecture?” Jin Guangyao nodded. Xue Yang was already infamous at a young age. Wei Wuxian could clearly sense Nie Mingjue’s frown deepening. (Seven Seas Ch. 10, Part 2)

Note that at this point, both Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan are alive (and attending the flower-viewing banquet as well). We can assume that this happens approximately 1-2 years before Wei Wuxian's death, due to factors such as time skips and a reference to the Sunshot Campaign from when Xiao Xingchen leaves the mountain, which we know is about a year after the Siege:

At the time, it had only been a few years since the end of the Sunshot Campaign, and the Siege of the Yiling Burial Mounds had just concluded. (Seven Seas Ch. 7)

and

Twelve years ago happened to be the year right after the Siege of the Yiling Burial Mounds, so they had just missed each other. (Seven Seas Ch. 7)

We can also approximate when Xue Yang's time as a disciple ended. He had to have been a guest disciple of the Lanling Jin until between one and two years after Wei Wuxian's death. We know it was at least one year afterwards, because he meets Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan while still associated with the Sect:

Xiao Xingchen smiled, seemingly well aware that it was in Jin Guangyao’s nature to speak in an ingratiating way. “Lianfang-zun speaks too highly of me.” His gaze then turned to Xue Yang. “He may be young, but since he ranks among the guest cultivators, he must still exercise self-discipline and restraint. The Jin Clan of Lanling is distinguished, after all, and should strive to set an example in many aspects.” (Seven Seas Extra 3)

And it must have been up to two years or less because Xue Yang was both imprisoned and exonerated for the crime of the Chang Clan massacre (and therefore no longer a disciple) while Jin Guangshan was still alive:

“I’m not shielding him,” Jin Guangyao defended himself. “The incident with the Chang Clan of Yueyang shocked me greatly as well. How could I have anticipated Xue Yang would slaughter a family of over fifty people? But my father insists on keeping him…” (Seven Seas Ch. 10)

and

Jin Guangshan began thinking of ways to pull Xue Yang out of jail ... until finally, the Jin Clan of Lanling successfully persuaded Chang Ping to change his story. He withdrew all the grievances he had stated before and announced publicly that the clan extermination case had nothing to do with Xue Yang. (Seven Seas Ch. 7)

And we know Jin Guangshan died eleven years before Wei Wuxian was resurrected, from Sisi's story.

“I’ll go first, then!” She casually curtsied to the crowd. “What I’m about to tell you is an incident that happened roughly eleven years ago.” ... And the half-dead man on the bed must have been Jin Guangshan! (Seven Seas Ch. 19)

Therefore, Xue Yang's time as a guest disciple lasted anywhere from two to four years in total, beginning at the end of the Sunshot Campaign and ending approximately a year (give or take) before Jin Guangshan dies.

Mo Xuanyu:

Mo Xuanyu's timeline is harder to define, because we never actually see him while he's a disciple, and have to rely on rumors and circumstantial evidence. The only reliable information we have, date-wise, is that he was fourteen when he was called to Golden Carp Tower by his father:

And sure enough, when Mo Xuanyu turned fourteen, that clan leader sent over a grand party to officially take him back. (Seven Seas Ch. 2)

Although knowing he's fourteen isn't particularly helpful, we do know that Jin Guangshan was still alive at the time. As for the exact time frame in which Mo Xuanyu could have been accepted as a disciple, Jin Guangyao says this:

“Did you think that I would rise in position with Jin Zixuan’s death? Jin Guangshan would rather bring back another illegitimate son than have me succeed him!” (Seven Seas Ch. 10)

This implies that Mo Xuanyu was accepted into Lanling Jin after Jin Zixuan's death so that Jin Guangyao would be further down the line of succession. This sentence is said when Nie Mingjue confronts Jin Guangyao about sheltering Xue Yang from the consequences of the Chang Clan massacre. Therefore, Mo Xuanyu could have (theoretically) entered the Jin sect at any point between Jin Zixuan's death and Nie Mingjue's confrontation, the latter of which took place after Xue Yang's imprisonment.

However, I believe it is more likely that Mo Xuanyu was brought in during the aftermath of Jin Zixuan's death, for the sheer reason that it would shunt Jin Guangyao out of the line of succession quicker.

We do know that Mo Xuanyu was present at Golden Carp Tower after Wei Wuxian's death, because Jin Guangyao gave him access to Wei Wuxian's manuscripts on possession:

He had written plenty of these manuscripts back then, all penned on a whim and tossed aside just as easily, scattered all around the cave where he slept in the Yiling Burial Mounds. ... He’d wondered where Mo Xuanyu had learned such forbidden magic. Now he knew. Never in a million years would Jin Guangyao have allowed unimportant people to glimpse the remains of a manuscript on forbidden magic. (Seven Seas Ch. 10)

And although we don't know exactly when Mo Xuanyu was kicked out of Golden Carp Tower, we can infer that it happened before Jin Guangshan's murder. During the events in the Sword Hall of Lotus Pier, after Sisi and Bicao's testimonies, one unnamed cultivator says this:

"He spent the last few years before Jin Guangshan’s death busily clearing the land of his father’s illegitimate sons, for fear that someone would suddenly pop out of nowhere and challenge him for the position. Mo Xuanyu was probably one of the lucky ones. Had he not gone crazy and been booted back home, he would likely have ended up disappearing like the others." (Seven Seas Ch. 19)

This implies that Mo Xuanyu's expulsion from the sect happened at some point before Jin Guangshan's murder. Theoretically, this was done because he would be a potential threat to Jin Guangyao's legitimacy (and have gotten killed) otherwise. As Mo Xuanyu was not legitimized, though, it's unlikely that he would have posed a genuine threat to Jin Guangyao's succession. Regardless of the reasoning, the quote here indicates that Mo Xuanyu was kicked out before Jin Guangshan's death.

To be clear, however, this cannot exactly be taken as reliable evidence. As Wei Wuxian says about this exchange,

If they’re just rumors, why so quick to believe them? If they’re secrets, how would you even know of them? This was not the first time these rumors had spread. While Jin Guangyao was in power, they had been suppressed so well that no one took them seriously. But tonight, the rumors all seemed to have become hard facts with irrefutable evidence. They became a solid foundation for Jin Guangyao’s multitude of crimes, proving just how unscrupulous he was. (Seven Seas Ch. 19)

So while it's possible that the timeline here is correct, we know that (as established earlier in the books – see Chapter 1) rumors in the world of Mo Dao Zu Shi are unreliable at best and often contradictory. For the purposes of this post, though, I am choosing to assume that this is at least partially true.

So taking the assumptions I've made into account, we know that Mo Xuanyu's time as a Jin disciple could have lasted up to approximately three years, anywhere between directly following Jin Zixuan's death to just before Jin Guangshan's death.

The timeline:

Now that I have a rough estimate of when both characters were present at Golden Carp Tower, I can try to find places where they overlap. Unfortunately, even with all this sleuthing, I cannot say for sure if they were present at the same time. The chance that they just barely missed each other, though, is unlikely.

Given the most generous interpretation of their respective timelines, Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu could have been Jin disciples together for almost three years at maximum. This assumes:

Mo Xuanyu was accepted into the Jin sect almost immediately following Jin Zixuan's death.

Both Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu's expulsions happened soon after one another, within the same year as Jin Guangshan's death.

This means Mo Xuanyu would have been a disciple since before Wei Wuxian died, and that Xue Yang's imprisonment and exoneration happened on a very tight timeline right before Jin Guangshan's death. This is the interpretation that gives both characters as much time to interact as possible.

Given the least generous interpretation, however, Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu just missed each other. This assumes:

The massacre of the Chang Clan happened very soon after Xiao Xingchen descended from the mountain.

Mo Xuanyu's acceptance into the sect happened just before Nie Mingjue confronted Jin Guangyao.

This means that Mo Xuanyu's call to join the sect would have happened in between Xiao Xingchen apprehending Xue Yang and Nie Mingjue confronting Jin Guangyao about it, which is presumably a very short amount of time. This is also the least likely interpretation, as it wouldn't make much sense for Mo Xuanyu to have been accepted so late and during such a controversial period for the sect.

The most likely interpretation is somewhere in the middle: that Mo Xuanyu and Xue Yang were, in fact, Lanling Jin disciples at the same time, but that they did not have much overlap. I believe it is probable that Mo Xuanyu would have been accepted into the sect within a year or so of Jin Zixuan's death, and that the Chang Clan massacre happened at least half a year after Xiao Xingchen descended, meaning the two would have had around a year of overlap between them.

In conclusion, I can say with relative confidence that Xue Yang and Mo Xuanyu would have been Jin disciples at the same time. However, I cannot confirm this as canon, as there is not enough evidence available in the books. Therefore, this must be rated as SUPPORTED FANON: the text does not directly state this is true, but it is a distinct and likely possibility.

2023-2024 cdramas year in review

i'm borrowing this idea from thai bl tumblr, but with less fun categories because i'm tired. i'm including shows from this year and last year since i mainly watched a mixture of the two in 2024.

tagging whoever wants to do it!

overall favorite show (2024): fangs of fortune it's gorgeous, i love the characters, and it's got one of the most shippable poly casts i've seen in basically ever.

overall favorite show (2023): mysterious lotus casebook i actually did watch this one last year and i liked it, but it wasn't until i rewatched it again in 2024 that i lost my mind over it.

favorite character: di feisheng from mysterious lotus casebook my love my darling my heart. i adore him with every fiber of my being. i honestly never really noticed xiao shunyao too much before this but he's sure got my attention now.

favorite character runner up: pei sijing from fangs of fortune sorry, you can't give me a badass kuudere archer and expect me to NOT be absolutely nuts about her. cheng xiao has also improved SO much from her early days acting and i think it's super neat that they incorporated her dancing background into her fight scenes.

favorite ship: dihua from mysterious lotus casebook see above about losing my mind. it's got everything i love in a ship: history, tension, longing, being totally obsessed with one another. i've written so much this year and most of it is for them.

favorite ship runner up: jingxiao from fangs of fortune GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS i love them and they love each other. i love how flirty wx is with psj and how sincere and open psj is with wx.

favorite canon ship: song mo/dou zhao in blossom this is still airing so i hope they don't fuck it up, but it's such a refreshing dynamic. they're really partners, and he's so gone for her.

favorite canon ship runner up: gu jiusi/li yuru in destined i'm not really a fan of straight romance dramas but the strongest arc of this show is undoubtedly the first one, where they unwillingly get married and slowly fall in love. bjt is particularly charming in this role and song yi is lovely per usual.

favorite fl: dou zhao in blossom i love that she's careful and meticulous but not omnipotent. she's working at changing what she can but she's not a miracle worker. she feels warm and human and fallible in the best way. also mzy is gorgeous and i love her, fuck the haters.

favorite fl runner up: xue fangfei in the double she's batshit overpowered and it's still contrived in some instances but wu jinyan sells it enough that i just eat it up hahah.

favorite ml: li lianhua in mysterious lotus casebook his burnt out gifted kid ass is captivating. he has so many complex layers; it's a role that really gives cheng yi a chance to stretch his muscles and i think he did a great job.

favorite ml runner up: pu yiyong in oh no! here comes trouble he's a dumbass delinquent with a hereditary power to see spirits and release them, what's not to love.

favorite female supporting role: yang ying in a journey to love one of the best character arcs i've seen in a long, long time. i love her journey and where she ends up and i hope she gets everything she ever wants. iconic role for helan dou imo.

favorite female supporting role runner up: feng baobao in am nobody she doesn't understand human interaction and she loves knives and is good at them. she was made for me.

favorite male supporting role: yu shishan in journey to love breakout role for fang yilun, suave playboy with a heart of gold, faithful brother in arms. i adore him.

favorite male supporting role runner up: wang ye in i am nobody lazy, lowkey, and the best in the world. a good look for hmh also.

favorite antagonist: shen yurong from the double what a thoroughly unhinged man. i particularly loved the middle section of the show and the back and forth between him and xff. i wanted him to take a different path, but he couldn't.

favorite antagonist runner up: li lun from fangs of fortune oh my beautiful, bitter, lovelorn tree demon. he's like catnip for me.

favorite antagonist honorable mention: gong shangjue from my journey to you so intense, so brooding, so murderous.

bonus 2023 thai show section

favorite overall show: moonlight chicken i just really loved this show. i like both gemfourth and earthmix and while i did not enjoy the bit of firstkhao pandering at the end, i thought it was a generally thoughtful exploration of human foibles.

favorite cast: my school president they're adorable and i love them. this is overall such a fun, feel good show with great music. tinngun are wonderful and so are the secondary couples. special shoutout to babygirl por's outfits.

most ridiculous sex scene: bed friend you know the one.

biggest disappointment: only friends i still haven't finished it. i'm just not invested in anything or anyone. i think part of it is that i don't really love the cast, out side of neo and mark. i do like first and khao but not really together, sadly.
