the arrangement is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules...
part 4 of my ineffable kisses series - imagining some kisses throughout time that went decidedly better than That Kiss did...
<< start || part 2 || part 3 || part 4 - golden age of piracy || part 5 || part 6 || part 7 || part 8 >>
i personally don't believe aziraphale would be a naval officer in the golden age of piracy, but would instead adopt a kind of 'stede bonnet' approach to piracy that results in him being invariably captured and needing to be rescued several times over - that is, until crowley can physically pick him up and place him on land, under strict instructions never to board a ship ever again 🩷

I won’t leave you on your own.
Right, this might be controversial, or I might be the only one who sees this moment in this way, but I need to talk about this now. It’s really sweet when Crowley says this, except what happens afterwards isn’t sweet at all. And can I just add right now that I love both Azirpahale and Crowley, they’re both wonderful and also brillianty flawed, I don’t hate either of them. But as far as I’m concerned Crowley behaves really stupidly here.

C: I’m going to get the humans out of here and then I’m coming back. I won’t leave you on your own. A: I know.
Oh dear, Crowley. Why did you leave him on his own after saying this? Why did you let Aziraphale down? Why does no one talk about the fact that you did? You walked out that bookshop and Aziraphale was so confident you would come back that he expressed this confidence to the humans and then defended his reliance on you, “Crowley will have a plan,” “Rescuing me makes him so happy.”
But you didn’t come back, Crowley! Why? You left the bookshop, spotted Muriel and then in some super weird ADHD* move just left Aziraphale to sort out the demon problem on his own whilst you went off to heaven. Whyyyyy?
Now okay. I admit, Crowley was working towards the ultimate goal of finding out what the heck had happened to Gabriel, which was something that needed to be done. He spotted the opportunity, knew it probably wouldn’t come up again and so took it. He did what probably needed to be done. He also did it expecting that the demons wouldn’t ever be able to enter the bookshop because Aziraphale was never going to say they could come in. It’s not his fault Maggie is an idiot. I still love him and so does Aziraphale. Also Aziraphale is perfectly capable of defending himself in some ways and we see this after Crowley leaves…
BUT. What a mistake.
He basically left Aziraphale on his own to fight the demons. An Aziraphale who trusted so absolutely that Crowley would come back, and that Crowley would know what to do, that he hadn’t bothered to come up with the whole plan himself. He didn’t have to. Aziraphale and Crowley are a team, they work together and they don’t let each other down.
Except this time Crowley did.
It’s unclear exactly how long Crowley spent in heaven watching the trial etc but since the ball starts at 6.30pm and the demons seem to turn up not that long into the evening, we can assume it’s a really long time. By the time he comes back it’s very clearly morning again, the entire night has passed. Maybe Crowley didn’t intend to be away that long, maybe he expected his jaunt to heaven to be quicker, or maybe this is because time passes differently in heaven and Crowley had no way of knowing exactly what time he’d return to earth, but whatever the reason, he leaves Aziraphale alone for a really long time, after explicitly stating that he won’t leave him on his own.
By the time he does turn up it’s long after the battle is over and long after Aziraphale has been forced to take an action he really didn’t want to take in order to defend himself and the bookshop.
Just look at Aziraphale’s face when Crowley returns, he isn’t super delighted to see him, he's sort of happy, but more looks like he can’t believe Crowley is actually there.
Tumblr media
When he says, “You came back!” he sounds kind of surprised and also perhaps relieved. Why? Because he’s given up on Crowley coming back by that point. He has no idea what has happened to him or why he let him down so badly.
I think we can fairly safely assume that Aziraphale and Crowley can sense at least to some extent where the other one is when they are both on earth if they try to do so, and it’s probable that at some point after sorting out the demon problem Aziraphale had wondered where Crowley had gone and tried to sense him, so likely he knows Crowley has been away from the earth. What he doesn’t know is where he’s been or whether he went there willingly (at least until he turns up with a bunch of angels, at which point he’s intelligent enough to work it out).**
So now he knows where Crowley went, but he doesn’t know why or what he discovered. He’s still in the “Crowley let me down,” space at this point. Then Crowley asks what happened to the demons and Aziraphale has to tell him he blew up his halo. Crowley finds this delightful and he laughs, but for once they aren’t laughing together. This is only the second time that we have seen Crowley laugh at Aziraphale (the first is when he mocks him about thinking he’s a demon after the Job thing, which he quickly stops doing and switches to being kind when he realises how upset Aziraphale is). When he laughs about the halo he doesn’t mean it to be mocking, it’s actually the same disbelieving reaction that he does on the walls of Eden about the flaming sword, except magnified, he doesn’t just do a single “you what?” of disbelief and amusement as he does in Eden, he properly laughs because he knows Aziraphale better and thinks their relationship can take the laughter.
Usually he’d be right, but the problem is he’s just let Aziraphale down. So while he isn’t really mocking Aziraphale, because he loves that Aziraphale does these unexpected and wonderful things, Aziraphale doesn’t like the laugh at all. Look at his face. He glares at Crowley and his look very much is one of, “if you’d come back like you said you would, if you hadn’t let me down, I probably wouldn’t have had to do it at all.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then since Crowley rather stupidly doesn’t read the reaction and stop laughing the look changes more to, “I’m really upset about all this, please, please don’t laugh at me, you’re hurting me.”*** It's only shown briefly so it's difficult to capture, but you can just catch this in his expression before the camera cuts back to Crowley, and then again for a second when it recuts to Aziraphale, just before he reacts to the arrival of the demons.
Tumblr media
Basically, Aziraphale is really fucking pissed off and upset with Crowley at this point. (Side note, Maggie and Nina look less than impressed by the laughter too – even they know it’s not the right reaction.)
If you need anymore evidence of how annoyed he is, look at how far away he stays from Crowley whilst he’s laughing. Aziraphale never stands that far away from him!
Tumblr media
Luckily for Crowley Aziraphale is very good at forgiveness, and also very much likes it when Crowley takes charge of a situation and thankfully Crowley finally steps up. Whilst Aziraphale worries about what he’s done (look at the tension in his hands) Crowley categorically declares there will be no war and the demons react by listening to him. You can see Aziraphale start to reconnect with Crowley, his eyes flick back to him and then once Shax is up and awake his hands relax and he closes the distance between him and Crowley, angling his body towards him and standing close to him again.
Tumblr media
Crowley is going to sort things out and Aziraphale’s faith in him is easily restored, although without doubt it’s suffered some damage underneath.
So what does this all mean? Well, firstly Crowley hurts Aziraphale deeply here and doesn’t realise he’s done it (and this is the second hurt he’s caused him within the space of a few days). Aziraphale forgives him pretty quickly, because Crowley unknowingly repairs things and Aziraphale is so full of love that it will take more than this one transgression to break their bond.
What it does mean though is that Aziraphale has just had a reminder of the demonic nature of demons shoved in his face. Crowley has just hurt him in several different ways in the space of a very short time. I doubt he consciously sees this as demonic because by this point I don’t think he really even thinks of Crowley as a demon on a day to day basis, but I do think he is responding to that hurt in a very human way.
Look, if your partner left you in a sticky situation and told you they would be back immediately and then didn’t turn back up for hours wouldn’t you be pissed off? Even if nothing happened (if Maggie had never let the demons in for example) you’d still have a few things to say about your partner’s hours of absence – yes, even if they had just unveiled a huge clue about why the whole situation was happening in the first place. That wouldn’t undo all your thoughts about how they let you down really badly and left you on your own in a terrible situation.
Another issue is Shax’s demonic nature – specifically how Shax has hurt him during the attack on the bookshop. If Crowley had been there there’s no way Shax would have had even half a second to get in her jibes to Aziraphale, but he’s not there and Shax gets her chance. What she does is play on Aziraphale’s fears about Crowley’s feelings for him (right at a time when Crowley is letting him down) and also remind Aziraphale of some of the ways in which he is a less-than-stella angel (as a side note I find it really interesting that Shax seems to have this ability to look at people and see their worst fears about themselves – do all demons have that or does every demon have a slightly different ‘power’?) So now Aziraphale has been let down by Crowley, which has directly led to Shax hurting him, and had his worst fears about his own nature brought to the forefront of his mind.
He’s been let down, mocked and emotionally wounded, and he goes into the conversation with the Metatron carrying that hurt, only to hear the Metatron singing his praises and telling him he’s, “the perfect angel for the job”. The Metatron deliberately soothes Aziraphale’s worst fears about himself in order to manipulate him. I’m not saying Aziraphale doesn’t see through it or that he is completely taken in by it or that this is his motivation for accepting the job, I think there’s more to it than that, but well… something to think about?
Mainly though, Crowley acts in a bit of a daft way here. His jaunt to heaven is funny and useful for moving the mystery along, but in terms of his relationship with Aziraphale it's an absolute disaster of a move. I'd want the "I was wrong" dance as an apology for that one if it was me. Just saying.

took me a while to sound out why the final fifteen felt so isolated from all the other arguments that they've had before, but "they aren't talking" might have led me to arrive at why that is. because whilst we have the "so did i" and bandstand arguments to compare it to, the closest that the final fifteen mirrors, for me, is their very first one that we see on screen; the holy water incident (and I'm 100% sure others have observed this but im slow)
the incident where crowley has experienced something that he's playing down to aziraphale, asks aziraphale for something to help him that only aziraphale can give to him, it turns out to be too much to ask of aziraphale, so he refuses, and they split apart. turn all of this around on its head, and you have the final fifteen. (and im going to put the caveat here: no, i do not think aziraphale has been threatened by the metatron and is communicating this in code to crowley, but yes i do think he feels threatened by the metatron; i think he's genuinely eager to take this opportunity, but equally he's not stupid).
so then they go through 79 years of silence, of not talking, and come to 1941, where aziraphale lands himself in a spot of bother, and crowley breaks their silence by coming to the rescue. they get through the church fiasco, and aziraphale enlists crowley's help in the bullet catch ("trust me"), without ever discussing the holy water - all the while, their affection and love for each other is broiling just beneath the surface. perhaps it stands to reason that the same will happen in s3; that crowley will find himself in a Situation, aziraphale turns up to get him out of it - using it as an Excuse - and they end up on the subject of the second coming etc., and crowley reluctantly agrees to help resolve it, but only with the unspoken provision that they, absolutely, do not discuss what happened in the bookshop.
but what about the missing scene of 1941? well, there have been hundreds of different speculations of what could have happened; they actually do discuss the holy water, or there's otherwise a bit of a vulnerable heart-to-heart, there's a kiss, there's an almost-kiss, there's a fight involving the zombies, the derringer comes out to play, crowley gets yanked back to hell again, or gets discorporated... but whatever happens evidently informs on the atmosphere attributable in 1967 - because it's not until 1967 that aziraphale considers his hand forced, cares so much for crowley that he'll do the very thing that he's previously refused to do - gives crowley the holy water - but then puts distance between them again. perhaps the same kinda of thing happens somewhere around ep3/4 of s3; that they finally get to a point where what happened - the kiss, the offer, the mutual rejection - can't be ignored any longer, and a full-bore-full-roar argument erupts at perhaps the most inopportune time, to the point it's just comical, leading them to the point where they finally both understand where they stand with each other, what the other meant, and wanted.
so look, im not saying that crowley is suddenly going to change his mind about going to heaven, in order to track with aziraphale's 180° on the holy water; that doesn't make much sense. and it similarly doesn't make much sense for them to create distance between them like they seem to have done in 1967. if anything, this time it's the impetus they need to get everything out and laid bare, nothing bitten back, nothing squashed down and restrained. "you go too fast for me" suddenly becomes "we're finally on the same page."

On how Crowley and Aziraphale's dynamic shifted in s2:
Okay so I was inspired by this lovely post by @rebeccasteventaylor which I couldn't find the link to in order to reblog directly, but if anyone has a link to it pls I'd love to put it here:
Tumblr media
Anyway, while I absolutely 100% agree with @rebeccasteventaylor 's meta, I have to point out that s2 shifted it a little. Especially for Aziraphale.
We don't see him looking away trying to hide his heart eyes anymore as he used to do in s1 (we all remember the "smitten" scene, only to cite ONE). Compare the little breath of lust from the Bastille (when he looks away twice) to the "don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions about love" one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In s2, he touches Crowley like crazy. He touches his chest, his hand, his back, asks him to dance, gives him a whole ass cotillion ball.
He was deliberately and explicitly pursuing Crowley this season. If s1 was all Crowley pursuing Aziraphale, s2 was all Aziraphale pursuing Crowley.
And Crowley seemed to either not notice or not acknowledge that Aziraphale was doing that (the way he said Aziraphale only has 3 reasons to call him still drives me crazy. Crowley ffs those were ALL the reasons there is to call someone. He's ALWAYS thinking of calling YOU).
I think Crowley was afraid. Probably for the same reason he never told Aziraphale he was homeless. Which is sad and kinda doesn't make sense at first bc this is all Crowley has ever wanted, right?
Until we remember the last time Crowley let himself love and be loved freely, he was cast away (yes, the Fall). He lost everything bc he wasn't worthy according to some crazy criteria. Apparently he doesn't even know what he DID exactly.
I wonder if Crowley thinks he's not worthy of Aziraphale. I wonder if that's why he refused to see their love for centuries until Nina threw it at his face (Nina LITERALLY doing the Lord's work). I wonder if he's afraid of loving and letting himself be loved and then losing it again. Afraid of daring to ASK and losing everything. Again.
And Crowley wasn't *happy* this season, even with their freedom. I wonder if Aziraphale was mistakenly arriving at the conclusion that he was not enough to make Crowley happy. That him alone would never make Crowley smile the way he did when creating nebulae.
These 4 years were breathing space between the two "wars", according to Crowley himself in s1. And I think Crowley doesn't deal well with their relationship in a calm environment. He only knows how to make grand gestures, and heroic rescues, and go fast and act on impulse because then he doesn't have to THINK. Once he needs to sit down and make a commitment (telling Aziraphale he's homeless for ex), he just STOPS, he can't.
Aziraphale was the opposite. The calmness without any danger was giving him all the space he needed to act on his feelings, while the sense of danger always made him enter denial mode (which ironically seemed to be Crowley's mode in s2).
Of course they still need to put a name on what they are and stop pretending, Nina was absolutely right (and Crowley did catch up on that faster in those last 15min), maybe Aziraphale was still lacking this bit even if he was pursuing Crowley, but we can't deny that until those last 15min the "us" was coming from Aziraphale.
It's sad to realise that unconsciously, without even noticing, Crowley was rejecting Aziraphale almost the whole season.
UNTIL suddenly there's a huge problem, a desperate situation and he wants to abandon everything, take Aziraphale and run away again! (his original plan wasn't even to run away, it was to go to the Ritz). And who can blame him after what happened when he Fell? The Fall was totally unexpected, nobody even knew that could HAPPEN.
Crowley doesn't think himself worthy of Aziraphale (he's UNFORGIVABLE!), and Aziraphale doesn't think he's enough to make Crowley TRULY unashamedly happy and carefree.
And they're BOTH immensely WRONG ofc, we can all see it. They're each other's WORLD.
But they just assume stuff and never ASK, never TALK (bc well, it was literally dangerous before, I get it, their communication issues don't come from nowhere). That's why they have different perspectives on how to fix their situation in the end.
And btw I have to add we can't ignore Crowley was opening himself more too, always taking off his glasses when he was at the Bookshop for example. Ironically he was just a bit slower than Aziraphale for once. All that ofc until those last 15min, when they both change back to their old behaviours (makes me want to bang my forehead onto a wall).
I do believe they'd get there if the Metatron hadn't intervened (interesting that he chose this *exact* moment), especially after that little push from Maggie and Nina (for Crowley) and ofc brielzebub (for Aziraphale) that was gonna make them BOTH confess their feelings.
Anyway, bottom line, fuck the Metatron.

Aziraphale and Crowley don't communicate and it stems from their first meeting.
Let me explain.
Before the Beginning, Crowley is at his most honest and his most vulnerable. He tells Aziraphale so excitedly all about stars and how long it's hoping to take for them to form.
Aziraphale is also bluntly honest (a trait he never really loses but does learn to temper) in telling him about the 6K year timeframe.
Crowley then mentions creating a suggestion box and Aziraphale frets over him, concerned already, and we all know how much trouble Crowley got in for asking a few questions.
This sets the tone for everything after.
Crowley stops being honest - "I'm a demon. I lied." - which also means Crowley has been disparaging his own demonhood at least since Aziraphale looked at him askance on a wall and said, "You're a demon. That's what you do."
Aziraphale stops trusting him, but he never stops being polite. Crowley doesn't attack him, so he doesn't attack either. Not at the Ark, and not with Job's goats. Aziraphale is still vaguely seeing the angel he saw in the stars.
Crowley even gives him the permit so he can doublecheck that everything's above board, so to speak. Then we've got Crowley lying straight to Aziraphale's face about killing Job's children because Crowley still sees the angel in the stars who told him the world and his nebulae were going to prematurely end.
The angel who let kids die in the Flood.
Yes, the angel who shielded him on the wall and gave away a flaming sword, so there's some comfort that he won't instantly get smote - "smitten" 😇 - but still the angel who staunchly toes the party line.
After all's said and done and Aziraphale cries about being fallen - cries over being just what Crowley is, even after seeing Crowley circumvent Hell's rules - Crowley tells him he won't tell anyone.
Crowley is good at not telling anyone things, but so is Aziraphale.
Season 1, we get this. Crowley doesn't tell Aziraphale about the hellhound until the last minute. Aziraphale doesn't tell Crowley about finding Agnes's book. Aziraphale doesn't tell Crowley he's meeting with Nazis, and Crowley certainly never tells Aziraphale how he knows them.
Season 2, we get more.
Things Aziraphale doesn't tell Crowley:
• Deringer in a carved out book and gun license
• Drivers license he's had for 90 years - as long as Crowley's had the Bentley
• Why his French is so bad (not until he's asked a direct question)
• He knows Crowley likes to rescue him
Things Crowley doesn't tell Aziraphale:
• Beelzebub dragged him to Hell and made him an offer
• He'd never shot a gun before
I'm sure there are more things I'm forgetting, but those are some of the big ones.
More evidence of their continued lack of communication after the Apocanot is the apology dance. (Although I love it and do need to see Aziraphale do it too.)
Crowley is not wrong, and Aziraphale is not right. They are both both. But that never gets discussed, which is why Crowley never has to talk about being brought to Hell. He never talks about Aziraphale being threatened by Extreme Sanctions.
Aziraphale doesn't know why Crowley comes back, but he very likely assumes it's because Crowley wants to do the right thing after all. Aziraphale is still thinking about the angel Crowley was (season 1, "You were an angel once") and sees every single instance of good as PROOF that Crowley could/should/wants to be an angel again.
Additionally, some of the things they do say don't get heard. Aziraphale likes to tell someone he's doing good now that he's no longer reporting to Heaven. Crowley teases him for it twice, back to back. Tone of voice and "doing good again, angel?" after Maggie says something about the rent.
Aziraphale craves being told he's doing the right thing. Aziraphale has been pushed into a place where he won't get that from the place he always has because Heaven is out of reach. If he'd communicated this to Crowley, who is doing everything he can as always to keep him safe, that Crowley would keep teasing him? That Crowley wouldn't gesture to someone in need and say, "Right. Have fun, angel." Anthony J'acts-of-service Crowley would absolutely let Aziraphale have all the bouncy fun miracles in the world without shame.
Also, when they discuss how to make Nina and Maggie fall in love. Crowley's idea - canopy, rainstorm, vavoom - is absolutely informed by his own experiences, but he doesn't leave it at that. He says he "saw in a Richard Curtis film." He won't let that uncomfortable truth live in reality, pushing it off to humans and film. The realm of fiction, as Aziraphale immediately latches onto.
They don't talk about themselves. They don't talk about being an US. They said their side without getting into the nitty gritty of what that means to the point where neither knows where the line is.
Aziraphale says our car and when Crowley refuses because my car, Aziraphale also says they both get use out of the bookshop. Our car, our bookshop. It's a melding that Aziraphale assumes is perfectly natural, but Crowley hasn't seen it that way. They haven't talked about it.
And when they finally do, Aziraphale is running on the assumption that because Crowley does good and was happiest as an angel, looking over a colourful nebulae - so happy with it, he didn't want to lose it and ended up Falling for it - of course Crowley would want to go back. Of course Crowley would want to be in charge (second in command) since it means doing what they do on a larger scale.
Crowley, however, is still keen to keep going as they have been. Alcoholic breakfast at the Ritz, fixing up the bookshop like nothing happened, getting Muriel away so it can just be the two of them. Crowley is ready for the status quo. Although he does have new knowledge that the car and the bookshop are theirs, he and Aziraphale still carried the plants back to the Bentley.
They are still not talking.
And when they do, it's too little and it's too late. And they never ask each other why.
Next season, they need to learn how to ask why. And I have faith they will.

hey!! first of all, this is such a great blog and i am so freakin grateful for you who run it! i’ve never been in a fandom with a virtual library like this and it’s genuinely so helpful. thank you so much!! :D
secondly, do you have any recommendations for fics with aziraphale female presenting and crowley male presenting? i feel like it’s not as portrayed as much as the other way around.
thanks again! :))
much love, bean💜
Hi! We have a #female aziraphale tag you can check out. Here are more fics to add...
Scandalous by hiya_angel (E)
As Aziraphale pulled away from the counter, she heard a tearing sound, and felt a fluttering sensation of fabric across her legs. Turning to find the source of the sound, she saw a piece of fabric that looked an awful lot like her skirt hanging from a loose screw at the counter. Glancing down, Aziraphale let out a breathless scream as she was met not with the sight of her skirt but instead with her tiny white knickers, her favorite pair with the lace trimming. Her skirt had been ripped off; she was standing in the middle of a busy cafe in just her little knickers. When Aziraphale finds herself trapped and humiliated, the barista Crowley, her longtime crush, comes to her rescue.
More Than Friends by StarsSeasNSkies (G)
Crowley and Aziraphale used to be friends, childhood neighbours. Then Crowley left for three years, not even leaving Aziraphale a way to write to him. Now Crowley's back and upon finding Aziraphale unwed, he's determined to find her a husband. Only thing, they're both in love with each other Inspired by Season 3 of Bridgerton
a grain of sand, a universe of beaches by batsingotham (T)
In which Aziraphale wears her heart on her sleeve far too often for Crowley's liking (resulting in him being forced to do good deeds, if anyone asks) and yet never says what he wants her to until it's too late. (Alternatively: Aziraphale goes to Heaven and Crowley decides to bring her back home.)
watermark by summerofspock (T)
Aziraphale happily works as the librarian of a small liberal arts university in the rural town of Tadfield. When the newly hired biology professor seems to enjoy tormenting his students by sending them after obscure references, she decides he needs a stern talking to. He decides they could be pretty good friends.
The Librarian by EveningStarcatcher (T)
Azira Fell is a librarian living a very normal and somewhat boring life when a stranger with dark glasses and red hair bursts into her life. Now to find out who he is and what he was running from...
The Dark Stranger by tuddles (E)
Miss Fell is a young, somewhat innocent woman living in London and doing her best to do good. One day while she is walking through Hyde Park, she comes across a dark stranger in the middle of a storm. Who is this tall and handsome man and why does he make her feel so… wanted.

Aziraphale and Crowley WILL BE OKAY
OKAY. This needs to be said. Both of these characters have certain tendencies and it is shown in Season 2. This makes me think that everything was painted as being much worse than it actually is.
Crowley tends to run away and distance himself when faced with a problem he can’t control or solve. He does this when faced with the whole Gabriel issue.
His first instinct is to seriously take him to a place far away from the bookshop, so he is nowhere near the bookshop and him. Notice how Aziraphale seems to be extremely confused.
Because he thinks DIFFERENTLY from Crowley.
Aziraphale was created to be a guardian. To protect things. The OPPOSITE of Crowley. His first thought is to take care of him because he is basically helpless.
They have been together for over 6000 years, and they aren’t beings who hold grudges towards the other. Do they get angry and storm away? Yes. However it fades over time.
Do they come running to the other when in DANGER? Absolutely. No matter what terms they are on in the moment. Crowley would NEVER say he wouldn’t protect Aziraphale when he needs help.
SO, I dare to say there is a bit of anger towards the other but they are going to get over it. Crowley cannot get rid of his love for Aziraphale in days. It’s ingrained in him.
Same with Aziraphale. In the final 15, after their final words to each other, Aziraphale softly says “No.” as Crowley storms out of the bookshop. He looks out of the window multiple times at Crowley, hoping he’ll come back.
There is still love for the other. Mutual, unconditional love. Crowley and Aziraphale share a look before he steps into the elevator. It isn’t an angry look. He is communicating something non verbally. It almost seems like they are saying “I’m here if you need me.”
Lastly. THAT SMILE IN THE ELEVATOR. Let’s take a few quotes that imply that he is LYING and Heaven is about to go to HELL.
C: “Aziraphale is unpredictable…..”
M: “So predictable….”
C: “You’re an Angel who goes along with Heaven as far as he can.”
A: “I said I would protect you, and I will.”
Heaven always sells Aziraphale short when it comes to intelligence. However, he does state that he comes up with his own plans, but lets Crowley rescue him because it makes him happy.
So Aziraphale can come up with his own plans, is an unpredictable Angel, who simply plays along. Until he no longer will.
He is a guardian and is built to protect. He is going to protect what he loves most and just like the demons stormed the bookshop, is not backing down.
He has a history of not being one to back down and be intimidated easily. No matter the odds.
This is why Crowley and him will be okay, besides most things are alright in the end. Crowley of all people has to know how badly the Metatron just screwed himself over as well.
Even if his goal was to seperate them. What happens when they reunite again?

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You always find it charming when Crowley being all shy and awkward around you who is a human who doesn't have any privileges like he is a Demon. He has a miracle which you find quite fascinating while you are just a human working in a cafe near the Church. The first time he told you that he was a Demon, you were silent for a moment. Not knowing how to react but then you said it was a joke and told him that he is an angel in your eyes which he kind of cringed at Angel's sentence.
But then, when he showed you his snake eyes, forking tongue and his ability to perform miracles, you seemed impressed and stunned. Never have you seen that humans can have all these kinds of unusual things let alone make a miracle. But then later, you believe in him that he is a Demon. Although you were a bit hesitant at first because you know that Demons can do all kinds of mischievous things, but seeing that Crowley is not 'that' type (but it is a little) you are finally relieved from the kind of unwanted feeling of caution.
And this made Crowley fall in love with you because never as long as he was on earth did people treat him as well and respectfully as you. And this is leading him to help you with your cafe. The first time he was at your cafe was because he needed a strong shot of bitter coffee which later made him addicted to coming to your cafe until he became a regular customer of your cafe which lead to you getting to know him and so on.
You always greeted him with a smile and eyes twinkling with stars, making his demonic heart beat faster whenever he catches a sight of you. And this also led him to confess his feelings to you which you returned with the same feelings. Not because he is your regular customer or he always helps you, it's because you see the opposite of him that only you can see. Although he is a demon and demons should do bad things but Crowley, he is not that one.
Although Crowley always denied that he was not nice or that he hated the word 'Nice' he sure acted like one which made you stifled your laugh when you remembered that.
Fast forward to 1941, where world war started. Nazi spies everywhere regardless of time and place make you feel threatened and unsafe as your Cafe is close to the Church and well Cafe is a place where everyone hangs out other than a bar. So of course there will be Nazi spies hangout in your Cafe even if you don't know if it is Nazi or not. It's just that they are good at disguise.
You always do your work as usual although you are a little aware of the current situation which makes you a little uncomfortable with all that. You don't see your lover for a few days because currently he has something in another place stating that he needs to tempt someone in another place which left you confused and a little jealous because well it's a temptation what else do you not understand? But knowing Crowley, he's not the type who likes to cheat behind his lover's back.
He's a Demon, of course he can do anything but when it comes to you, he has a limit. Crowley himself did not believe in himself to become attached to human. Never in his life would he fall in love with a normal human being. And he still thinks about that. Most people will be afraid when he tells you that he is a Demon but you. You admire him and love him. Of course Aziraphale sees that Crowley is different from what other beings expect but you. You are just you. A human who always admires someone sincerely, sees himself as a different person that only you can see.
And this just made Crowley grab your face and crash his lips on you desperately. Pouring all his love and everything to you without a care in the world or Hell. And this also makes Crowley smile at himself like a teenager whose love is reciprocated while he is hiding behind the wall in the Church where Aziraphale is exchanging his books that he himself does not want to exchange with Nazi spies that he himself knows and does not know that there are other Nazi spies that he hired as his savior. And his reasons for being in that church? To steal holy water in abundance.
His skin feels hot when his skin is close to the church wall while his two legs fight for their lives to ease the hotness on the church floor.
'dammit, Aziraphale.' He cursed in his heart. He just wants to steal the holy water and go from there and be with you. Simple but well Aziraphale is the one who makes his simple plan difficult. It's not Aziraphale's fault that he needs a meeting at the Church, blame those Nazi spies.
But that didn't last long as Aziraphale, in full panic and helpless surrounded by Nazi spies which led to Crowley to tap dancing into the Church and save Aziraphale.
"In about a minute, a German bomber will release a bomb that will land right here. If you all run away very, very fast, you might not die. You won't enjoy dying, definitely not what comes after." Crowley smirked as he leaned his arm against the bench.
"You expect us to believe that? The bombs tonight will fall on the East End." Glozier said arrogantly.
"Yes. It would take a last minute demonic intervention to throw them off-course, yes. You're all wasting your valuable running-away time. And if, in 30 seconds, the bomb does land here, it would take a real miracle for my friend and I to survive it." he exchanged glances with Aziraphale who caught what he meant.
"A real miracle?" Aziraphale said.
"Kill them. They are very irritating." Harmony ordered.
But then suddenly, Crowley snapped his fingers and pointed his fingers at the ceiling of the Church. The sound of whistle was heard above the sky and echoed in the church making everyone except the two celestial beings confused and open mouthed. Aziraphale looked at the ceiling of the church nervously. Next thing he knows, they both miraculously survived the bomb blast.
The whole place near the church was destroyed and burned. Civilians who did not have time to save themselves were killed in the explosion. In fact everything is chaos and nothing survives but the two celestial beings.
Air raid sirens sound loud and people screaming in the background.
Crowley wiped his black tinted glasses with his handkerchief before putting them back on.
'Fuck, the holy water is gone' Crowley scoffed.
"That was very kind of you" Aziraphale muttered.
Crowley glared at him. "shut up"
"Well, it was. No paperwork, for a start... oh, the books! Oh, I forgot all the books! Oh, they'll all be blown to-"
Crowley grunted as he snatched the suitcase from one of the dead men's hands. It's perfectly intact, like the books inside it. He hands it to Aziraphale sloppily.
"Little demonic miracle of my own. Lift home?" Crowley offered but then he stopped as he realized something.
Aziraphale looked at him confused.
The church, bomb, you, cafe. Crowley quickly rushes towards your once to be cafe which is now only rumble and debris. He knows you are still working at the cafe now because your cafe hasn't closed yet but how come he forgot that your cafe is close to the church.
The explosion was too big to blow up anything close to it and your Cafe was one of the affected. Crowley is not a person who prays but in this situation he prays that you are safe and not at the Cafe even he knows that you are at the Cafe at this time. His eyes widened as he reached the site of your Cafe which no longer looks like a cafe. A raging fire burned everything, stones and debris around the place. Dead bodies everywhere and under rumbles. Everything is destroyed.
Aziraphale gasped for breath behind Crowley after chasing him to get here. He looked around and his face held a horror expression when he saw the gruesome scenes in front of him. He looked at Crowley who was stiff in front of the Cafe.
"Crowley-"
"Y/N!!" Crowley shouted as he ran towards your destroyed Cafe.
His hands lifted and dug the rumble that gathered there with desperation. Even though his fingers are sore and cut with sharp stones, his hands are still working to find you. Aziraphale looked at him with concern.
"Crowley, what happened-"
"Help me, Angel!" Crowley shouted, the hint of sadness in his tone made Aziraphale automatically step forward and help him.
Aziraphale was a little stunned after hearing that Crowley begged him to help him. He never saw this side of Crowley, helpless and desperate. He doesn't know who Crowley is talking about but seeing him this helpless and broken, he helps him with determination.
As Crowley's injured hands dug and lifted the large stone with the help of Aziraphale, he stiffened when he saw a hand with a ring on a pale and dusty finger under the large stone. The same ring he gave you to show how much he loves you.
Crowley recognized your pale hand before he kneeled and started to lift and dig the rest of the rumble that covered your body quickly. Aziraphale was dumbfounded seeing the scenes before he too helped Crowley to remove your figure from all the rumble and debris.
Crowley's cheeks were wet with tears while his lips never stopped calling your name desperately as he got you out of there. Your eyes are closed tightly, face covered with wounds and debris, blood is flowing from your head and body and your skins pale with how much blood you lost. Not counting how many bones you break in your body.
Your body temperature becomes cold as if you live in a cold place. Warm skins and smiles that you have disappeared. Crowley hugged your sickly pale and broken body against his body tightly. Your head on his chest as he stared in front of him with wide eyes behind his tinted black glasses. Tears fell down his cheeks.
Aziraphale fell to his knees by his side while his eyes focusing on your limp body. "Crowley" Aziraphale tried to call him but he was met with silence.
Crowley still couldn't believe this was happening. The day he dreads when it comes to you. His still too shocked and did not utter any words. His smart suit is ruined with dust and blood. Your blood. Your blood is still flowing out of your body and yet your body temperature drops as if your spirit left this world quickly. Without saying goodbye.
Crowley angling your head upwards to his face while his face looked down to see your peaceful face. His face holds a feeling of desperation and sadness when he sees your face. Thumb stroke your cheek gently.
"no.. no" Crowley whispered before he closed his eyes and kissed the top of your head with anguish sounds heard from his throat indicating that he held himself from screaming.
He sniffles and takes a deep breath before taking off his glasses. His eyes glossy with tears. Aziraphale intended to put his hand on Crowley's shoulder, but he was unable to do so when he witnessed it.
Crowley kept your head closed to his chest tightly without letting go. He's not ready to let you go and he's not ready to watch you leave him. He was helpless and in denial. He cannot accept that you have gone and left him. It's all his fault. If he knows that the bomb will land in the church, of course he will take you away from your cafe. But he knew that the bomb landed in the church and yet he didn't take you away from your cafe.
This is all his fault. He did all this. He is the cause of your death. Crowley digested all the bad thoughts on himself helplessly.
He will not be able to hear your sweet voice talking to him, your laughed, your touched and your eyes that always twinkle with stars whenever he is with you. If only he could turn back time and take you away from this place just to see you live happily would be enough for him.
And then, he froze at the sudden thoughts to give you life. If he can bring your spirit where your spirit is back into your body does that mean you will live again? Crowley snapped his head to see your peaceful and lifeless face. If he uses his miracle and finds your spirit and then brings it back into your body, will Hell and Heaven know? Obviously depending on how big a miracle he did to bring you back to life.
He clenched his jaw tightly. He didn't give a fuck about all those things as long as he brings you back. You have a lot more time in this world. He will make you an eternal no matter what, as long as he and you can be together. He always loves you no matter what happens to you if he brings you back to life.
Crowley then moved his hands to cup your head to his chest before he closed his eyes and put his head on top of your head. He searched for your soul using his miracle in a big way making his energy decrease but he doesn't care as long as he can give you life. And when he found it, he snapped and brought you back.
Aziraphale who was still kneeling next to him without caring about his dirty clothes with dust, sensing a huge use of miracle from Crowley. He panicked and glanced at Crowley.
No, this cannot be done. Bringing back human souls that have been taken to the living is forbidden. Hell and Heaven will know this. It is a terrible curse. Not only does it make the human live forever but they don't know if the spirit they bring back is the same spirit they bring back. It could be another spirit that was brought back. It could be a sinister spirit.
If Hell or Heaven knew this, they would be discoporated forever. Crowley risked his life for this human. Who is she to him that makes Crowley willing to risk his life to save her?
"Crowley.. Crowley, no, Crowley! " Aziraphale tried to stop Crowley by trying to release both of Crowley's hands from holding you but Crowley didn't move instead he tightened his hold on you.
"Crowley!"
A gasped began to be heard in Crowley's arms as Crowley nuzzled his head on your shoulder with relief. His weakened body hugged you tightly as he whispered sweet nothings in your ear.
"breathe, darling.. that's it, breath. Take as many breaths as you need" Crowley whispered in your ear as you panted to get oxygen back into your system.
Your eyes widen looking at the night sky, mouth agape to get oxygen like a fish being taken out of water before you grunted in pain. Crowley shushed you and stroked your head in a comforting way. Trying to ease the pain.
Aziraphale was dumbfounded when he saw the scenes in front of him. Not only Crowley managed to bring you back to life but with how many problems Crowley will face.
"You're okay, you're fine.. You're back, breath.. " Crowley whispered into your ear.
'what have you done, Crowley?' Aziraphale thought with horror struck on his face.

Loosely related to that one post about why Aziraphale asked Crowley to deal with the guard, and while it is definitely a sweet thought that he did it because "Crowley likes saving him", canon does not actually support that. like at all.
I went back to watch the scene, and this is what Aziraphale yells at him when Crowley is focused on the loss of his car:
"CROWLEY! I am the nice one! You can't expect me to do the dirty work."
Tumblr media
No compassion, no softness, no love, no nothing. Compare the way Aziraphale talks to him here to when Crowley first tells him that the bookshop burned down—they're on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.
On top of that, it's not like Crowley is hiding his feelings in this scene. How can Aziraphale look at this face and still decide that actually, his fucked up ideological hang-ups are more important than Crowley losing what is essentially everything he has; he and the Bentley are connected, he can feel it burn.
Tumblr media
This was never about Crowley or making him feel better. This was EXACTLY the same line of thinking Aziraphale has expressed over and over throughout the centuries, including at the bandstand.
'You're the demon, you're evil and you do bad things, I'm an angel and Pure—go do the dirty work for me.'
Now, before you say "but Aziraphale dealt with the guard", go watch the clip for yourself and see how the scene progresses. The only reason he does deal with the guard is because he begins threatening to shoot them right this moment, so Aziraphale sends him Somewhere Else to avoid getting Tracy killed and himself discorporated (again).
Otherwise he would have stood in front of a kneeling, grieving Crowley and yelled at him until he did what he wanted him to. Time and time again, Aziraphale shows a complete disregard for Crowley's emotions, needs, and experiences.
Tumblr media
Crowley is asking for one thing: To have a moment to process this loss, but no, Aziraphale does not give a single fuck because him not having to do "dirty work" is much more important than anything Crowley might be dealing with.
Using Aziraphale's "rescuing me makes him happy" line to retcon literal facts from earlier in the series simply does not work and never will.

Let Your Heart Decide
Ace Omens Hugfest 2024 prompt - "a clinging hug"
Until a moment ago, Aziraphale had been quite happily splashing about in the river shallows and watching the ducks. Enjoying himself thoroughly, quite at peace and hoping to stay that way for some time.
As soon as he heard the screams, though, he headed for the riverbank. Perhaps someone was injured and needed healing. It would be nice to help.
Goodness, though, that was rather a lot of raised voices! He clambered out onto the bank, water dripping from his robes, and set off towards the shouting.
It seemed as if half the little village was shouting, all rushing across the sand, many waving spears. And in front of them, slithering desperately, was a large black and red serpent.
“Oh!” Aziraphale cried, rushing forward. “Oh, I say, there’s no need—”
Five spears jabbed towards Crawley. Two missed. Three didn’t.
Crawley screamed as the spears pierced him, a terrible noise that stopped the villagers in their tracks.
“Oh no!” Aziraphale rushed forward towards the writhing mass of pinned coils and got between him and the villagers. “Stop, stop! You mustn’t do this!”
More spears raised. “This thing was near our village!” one of the humans shouted. “It wanted to eat our livestock, our children!”
“Oh, no. I’m quite sure he didn’t.” Aziraphale didn’t back down, not even when the spears angled in his direction. The thought of doing so, of leaving even a demon to be hurt, was absolutely unbearable. “Look, just stop. I’ll tend to the snake, and you can go back to your homes and do… whatever you do. Make more nice pots, tend to your sheep, doesn’t that sound lovely?”
“We want to kill the snake!”
“No, you certainly don’t,” Aziraphale said, this time imbuing his voice with a trace of Heaven’s power. Guilt wrenched at him for the misuse, but it didn’t stop him. “You want to go back home, and… be loving and kind to all living things. Go on, now.”
Slowly, the humans turned and shuffled away. They grumbled amongst themselves as they went, casting unfriendly glances back. But at least they went.
Aziraphale waited until they were at a distance, then twisted around and dropped to his knees in the bloody sand. Crawley wheezed, tongue dangling from his open mouth, eyes glassy. “Oh, oh, you poor dear. Let me get these spears out of you, easy now.”
He rested his hand on Crawley’s heaving side, scales damp with blood, and drew out the first of the spears. Crawley gave another wheezing cry, his coils wriggling weakly.
“It’s all right, we’ll be done in no time at all.” Aziraphale wasn’t at all certain it was all right. Crawley was bleeding very badly, and unusually quiet aside from the noises of pain. What if it was already too late?
It vaguely occurred to Aziraphale again that he absolutely should not be doing this. He did it anyway.
After all, if humans must be kind and loving to all living things, that was even more vital for an angel. Crowley was a living thing, one of God’s creations even if an abandoned one. Therefore, it made perfect sense to heal him.
“There,” he murmured, smoothing away the last of the wounds and then miracling away the blood. Crawley still hadn’t spoken, just lying there limp in the sand. “Crawley? Are you okay?”
Crawley’s tongue flicked again. “Yesss,” he finally said, voice weak. “I… thought they were gonna dissscorporate me.”
“I thought they were too. But I couldn’t allow that to happen.” He tried very hard not to think about how inappropriate it was to rescue a demon. “You’re all patched up now, just take it easy, try not to move too quickly—”
Quite abruptly, Crawley moved rather a lot. He collided with Aziraphale’s chest and coiled around him, trembling, clinging to him.
“Oh!” Aziraphale automatically hugged the coils close, stroking Crawley’s scales. “There now, shh. It’s quite all right. You’re all right.”
Crawley didn’t answer, just shivering. He wound around Aziraphale, almost constricting, and hid his face in the folds of Aziraphale’s cream robes.
“Shhh, I’m here,” Aziraphale murmured, settling back in the sand. “I have you. I won’t let anything happen to you, Crawley.”
“Don’t understand why.” Crawley shuddered again, and Aziraphale cooed as he stroked the scales. “M’ a demon. Why would you sssave me?”
“Um. Well.” Aziraphale scrambled for an excuse, and fell back on the one he’d used earlier. “I-I am an angel, after all. A being of love. It’s only right that I care for you.”
Crawley lapsed into silence again, just tightening his coils. Aziraphale held him, humming quietly, and waited.
Finally, Crawley spoke again. “I wasn’t trying to eat their kidsss or sheep or anything. I was just ssssunning.”
“I know. Well, I didn’t know about the sunning, but I know you didn’t intend anyone harm.” Although Aziraphale wasn’t entirely sure *why* he knew that. He ought to always suspect a demon of doing harm. But somehow, looking at the trembling serpent, he simply couldn’t suspect that. “Perhaps you shouldn’t sun near humans again? It doesn’t seem very safe.”
Crawley hissed in agreement. “Definitely not sssunning near humans again. Really didn’t go well.”
“Not very, no.” Another idea occurred to Aziraphale, an urge he should not give into. He gave in anyway. “You’re quite welcome to sun near me, you know. I’d be happy to watch over you.”
“Really?” Coils sliding around Aziraphale’s arm, Crawley adjusted to gaze up at him, golden eyes curious. “You really do care, don’t you?”
“I said I did, didn’t I?” Aziraphale ignored the pit of guilt still looming below him. “Angels ought to care about everyone. That’s all there is to it.”
Crawley was silent again, as if considering that. Then, very quietly, he said, “I didn’t think *anyone* could care about me. Not after I Fell.”
The pain in his voice wrenched at Aziraphale’s heart. He wrapped his arms more securely around Crawley’s coils, hugging him close. “Well, I do. And you’re quite welcome to cling to me for as long as you like.”
“Demonsss don’t cling,” Crawley grumbled.
Aziraphale snorted softly, but he didn’t argue. He simply stayed with the frightened serpent, holding him gently. And now, he didn’t feel the slightest bit of guilt over extending kindness.

GOOD OMENS SEASON 2 FIX-IT RECS UPDATED LIST (6 weeks out!)
Hello all! I am stunned by how much you all liked my first list of Good Omens Season Two fix-it recommendations on Archive of our Own! Thanks for sharing. Now that we’re 6 weeks out instead of two, there’s lots more good stuff on there and I thought I would post this new and expanded list for you? I broke it into categories, doubled it, and found lots more wonderful stuff to read.
**This was a hard decision but I am excluding works in progress since they need time to mature—all these are complete /compliant and can be invested in without fear.**
FULL SEASON 3 WORKS
To the Universe
22 chapters and I cannot say enough good things. It’s amazing closure and feels SO good to read. Writing style in this one is very compelling and keeps you on your seat until the end.
Somewhere Only We Know
A stunning 40 chapters for anyone who wants to just burrow down in this universe and never leave it. The angel and demon go separate ways only to reunite to (yet again) save Earth one more time.
Daily Report
This is written REALLY well. 6 chapters manages to bring about a really nice arc to reconciliation post Season 2! I was impressed.
MULTI-CHAPTER FIX-IT WORKS
Wouldn't It Have Been Nice?
Crowley is called to Heaven by a dying Angel. Jesus intervenes. Will break your heart, but it has a happy ending.
I Do Love Nothing in the World So Much as You
Soooo nice. 3 chapters bringing them straight through it as Aziraphale comes back and tries to beg forgiveness. NICE arc in this one. Believable.
Oh Simple Thing, Where have you Gone
This one says 7 of ? chapters, but I included it because I like the premise and what is there feels sort of complete? An interesting fixit where the Metatron has devious plans and locks up Crowley as part of that. The Bentley has a starring role in here during several heroic rescue plans.
Something Wrong
Ooooo! A NICE twist in this one. I won't reveal it, but this fic is based on some of the most compelling theories around why Aziraphale might not have been totally consenting when Metatron takes him away.
Jesus, Etc.
Crowley runs into a frantic Aziraphale with Jesus in tow at a Barbenheimer premiere. A battle of the wills with pop songs in the Bentley, Taylor Swift, Kenergy, sushi, a nativity play and a magic show come next.
ONE SHOTS (SMUTTY)
The Second Coming
The Second Coming - Episode6killedme - Good Omens (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Aziraphale “awakens” in the elevator (think ox ribs but sexually) and yeets himself back to earth to roger Crowley six ways from Sunday.
A Middle Ground
Aziraphale and Crowley have been separated, but the Angel won't let go. He kidnaps Crowley to a cloudscape and pleads his case. A Bridget-Jones like WWF bickering throwdown ensures. The part featuring reactions on the part of 737 Ryanair passengers and one airline attendant had me wheezing.
Just Called to Say Fuck You I Love You
This one is just spicy as hell, y'all. Aziraphale picks up on Crowley prayers while in Heaven, and let's just say that he's doing some ACTIVE praying.
Not for all my Little Words
Not for All My Little Words - mia_ugly, soft_october - Good Omens (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
An adorable one where Aziraphale, realizing he screwed up, chases Crowley through loudspeakers and other people’s phones through Europe using famous love quotes until he gets his attention (and some forgiveness.) Smut ensues.
ONE SHOTS (LITTLE/NO SMUT)
Darling, Can you Ever Forgive Me?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/48966298
A daydream, leading to Aziraphale doing the right thing and heading back to Earth to declare his love.
Cause you like me too much and I like you
'Cause You Like Me Too Much and I Like You - alastor_holmes - Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett [Archive of Our Own]
A sweet little one where Aziraphale quietly resigns, has a chat with Gabriel and Beez in the bookshop, and does the apology dance.
Everywhere
everywhere - vivahate - Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett [Archive of Our Own]
Azi Crowley instead from a Heavenly asassination attempt. (Maggie, nina and anathema help!)
Heaven is Not Fit to House a Love
heaven is not fit to house a love (like you and i) - Zaexx - Good Omens (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
A sweet little one with a *small* deviation from canon (that seemed ok because they have a good point.) Crowley had never told Aziraphale about the way the angels managed his trial OR about what he saw in the Heavenly files with Muriel. He jams his way into the elevator (telling the Metatron to get the next one) and tells him.
Magician's Choice
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49066831
Oooooo I like this one. Four ways that the ending could have gone instead, based on four magic methods of sleight of hand. So cool!
A Proper Apology
A Proper Apology - cyankelpie - Good Omens (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
One where the Angel simply calls over and over until they really talk. (Or imagine the idiots simply just used the phone.)
The Nightingales Were Just Sleeping In
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49041145
Cute, adorable, small...just a retelling of the final scene where they really TALK and don't just be idiots.
This is Not an Apology
https://archiveofourown.org/works/48992128
Aziraphale comes to Crowley while he tries to sleep it all off and they actually talk, for once.
Time to Turn it Right
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49162285
Azi tries to fix things. Crowley gets a cat.
We Don't Need Heaven
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49598467
They talk again, this time on the beach, and for real.

A thought just hit me from the glorious GO2 trailer.. The now infamous quote overlaid on the clip of our favorite Ineffable Husbands wining and dining in their 1940's getups in the book shop…
"You know what it's like when you don't know anything at all, and yet you're totally certain that everything would be better if you were just near one particular person." [insert the cutest lil giddy flirty angel clinking wine glasses with his demon pal clip]
…I THINK SOMEONE ACTUALLY MADE A LEGIT MOVE THAT NIGHT AND IT HELD MAJOR REPERCUSSIONS FOR YEARS TO COME.
Whether it was Aziraphale or Crowley.. I think this scene.. this moment of them together.. is going to be extremely pivotal to their entire relationship for S2 and it will reverberate throughout their history together.
LET ME TRY TO EXPLAIN MY MADNESS AS COHERENTLY AS I CAN. (apologizes in advance.. lol)
Tumblr media
It's obvious the new wine dinner date at the bookshop clip is post Blitz bombing scene from season 1 and Aziraphale finally realizing his feelings for Crowley (or finally realizing Crowley truly loves him back). But I think he still holds himself back- isn't sure of himself.
Tumblr media
These feelings are fresh and bubbling to the top from the moment their hands touched when Crowley handed over the bag of books. And as much as he wants to lean all the way into these new giddy feelings of flirtatious love that is written all over his face, all that's in the back of his mind is.. What would heaven think? What would heaven do if they found out? Not only to him, but to Crowley?
So, he lets Crowley give him a lift back to the bookshop after the church bombing scene. He offers him some wine as a thank you for the rescue earlier that night.
Tumblr media
And yet for Crowley, this is just yet another moment of him doing something for the Angel he cares most about- the same ol' song and dance from thousands of years. He's his normal self- holding back his feelings for Aziraphale's sake and going with the flow. But as the night progresses.. he notices something different in the air.
Aziraphale, only freshly realizing his feelings (or Crowley's feelings for him), and he starts to internally freak out because of the danger it would put them both in if they truly accepted each other's true feelings for one another. But he also feels an unbounding unbridled burst of love growing stronger as the night goes on.
AND I THINK IT'S AT THIS TIME THAT ONE OF THEM.. POSSIBLY CROWLEY.. TRIED TO MAKE A MOVE ON THE OTHER ONE DURING THIS NEW SCENE.
Ya know.. like in fanfic but FOR REALS THIS TIME.
And I'm not talking a lean in for a smooch or anything we've all read in those glorious imaginative fanfic stories over the years or whatever.. but maybe something as simple as a wandering hand across the table.. testing the waters.. a subtle inquiry looking for an invitation to take it further.. An angel.. and a demon.. finding true love and connection with one another that is beyond understanding.
And in classic defensive Aziraphale style, he pushes Crowley away before anything can go further. Hurt.. angst.. ya know. The PAIN OF REJECTION. And then they don't see each other again until Aziraphale shows up in the Bentley in the 60's to give Crowley the holy water thermos.
Tumblr media
Remember that awkward guilty as hell look he was giving him in the car in that scene? And Crowley's complete and utter shock that Aziraphale actually gave him something so precious and dangerous for his sake after long denying him (in more ways than one)?
Crowley was probably after the holy water more than ever since after that disastrous and heartbreaking incident of being shot down in the bookshop after the Blitz.
But he won't give up on Aziraphale. All he can think is just how much more dangerous their relationship truly could become if he were ever successful in the future. He needed something to protect his Angel and himself if their budding relationship were to ever be found out by either side.
And this is where Aziraphale's "You go too fast for me, Crowley" line comes into play. Thousands of years of Crowley's past acts finally came into focus the night his books were saved and Aziraphale realizes that as much as he has loved Crowley, that he's been loved back just as long.
But if Crowley made a move on Aziraphale during this new wine scene in the bookshop, Aziraphale just wasn't ready to accept this newly budding romance (in his eyes at least) and the dangers that would come with it so soon after only just realizing everything that night. It was all too fast for him.
But Crowley didn't have as much inhibitions to hold back, so he finally tried to move the relationship further but Aziraphale was too scared and needed more time to gain the courage to rebel against everything he knows- which brought us to season one's team-up against both sides and them finally joining together on their own side together. ♥
But something about the choices made during that special moment together in the dark and quiet bookshop during WWII.. an angel and a demon truly found love in one another and one or both of them holding back for their own reasons at the time.. shifted something in the grand ineffable plan.. and maybe a song that is slowly popping up in records and juke boxes across England is hinting at something gettin' closer ;) ..I don't know.. I just sense that scene will be more important than we all can imagine for S2's plot in some important way, lol.
..Sorry for my random ramble! I hope that made any semblance of sense. I'm sure someone else has already probably thought up this theory but it's legit all I've been thinking about all day and have no real life friends to geek out about it with, lol. I honestly never make posts like this on here.. I'm just a quiet lurker geek with high hopes ^-^'

Thinking about the Greek mythology themes you've noted already... Possible Orpheus-and-Eurydice nods for S3? (Thinking about the first bit of the S2 opening, with the Ineffables in the tunnel)
Ooh, interesting thought! That seems possible, in a very general kind of way. The story is playing pretty fast and loose with its Greek myth nods (thankfully because most Greek myths are bananas lol.) I love the idea of everyone going to Hell after Aziraphale. Aziraphale can hold his own but everyone does need help sometimes and this might be a case where he does need a hand. Plus, it'd be fun to have Gabriel and Crowley working together. No idea if the rescue is where they'd take the story but we'll have to see. The main characters kind of do need to reconnect again pretty quickly so it does seem like a possible way forward?
I also have been thinking about which bits of S1 aren't mirrored yet in S2 and how they might fit into S3 continuing the rest of this last week of the end of the world, if that's where this is going, and one of the biggest is, to both my intrigue and horror... 1793.
I suppose it would be, right?
Tumblr media
I'm of two minds-- the writer in me can definitely see why we wouldn't see the mirror of 1793 until we're on the other side of Aziraphale's fall but the part of me that loves these characters is just shuddering at the idea of a mirrored 1793... although, I do think it really likely that Gabriel is going to be helping Crowley with this rescue if it happens and that's sort of funny considering we'd be going from Crowley and Aziraphale mocking Gabriel in the Paris scene to Gabriel being the walking holy water Crowley takes with him to Hell to get to Aziraphale.
1793 was also kind of built to be evocative of Aziraphale in Hell. He's imprisoned, it's all dark, people are screaming... it's the closest thing to Hell on Earth that we've seen in the series. It's the only scene in which Aziraphale wears red and one of the only times he's in black-- and the only time he's fully in Crowley's colors, which are more Hell colors than Heaven ones. It's also arguably one of the most direct scenes that involves the Satan story so it winding up having foreshadowed part of the Aziraphale's fall storyline would work really well. Heh, what if we see Satan in his true form for the first time and he's being played by the guy who was Jean-Claude the Executioner? 😲
Let's just hope that it's not a completely dark mirror, though. We at least need the humor of Aziraphale not yet remembering Crowley but still reacting like oh hiiiiii yes you can rescue me! there must be something I can do for you in return, my lord? 😂

Why would Aziraphale need a gun (let's be real, y'all)?
Meta post bought to you by someone who is and always will be processing religious trauma
Tumblr media
Okay, but why did Aziraphale buy a gun though? He's an angel so he can miracle his way out of anything.
He almost shot the antichrist with the Thunder Gun of Get 'em Before They Get You Dalrymple but was physically stopped by Madame Tracy while they were still sharing her body.
Tumblr media
But the only time Aziraphale would need to use a gun to defend himself would be in a situation where he physically can't use his miracles.
What if he bought it as a way to protect Crowley though?
Tumblr media
He knows what guns are capable of. He stared down the barrel of a rifle and hoped Crowley's aim was good enough to miss but still make it look real.
And perhaps the only time he wouldn't be able to use a miracle to save Crowley would be an instance where Hell became involved.
He never says, but being there when Crowley gets dragged down to Hell and then seeing him after his visit to Hell changed Aziraphale. It made him more aware that Heaven was watching too, but his biggest fear with their arrangement always was always the threat of what Hell would do to Crowley.
Tumblr media
Crowley's request for holy water shook Aziraphale to his core. It scared him because he probably started counting the days until he saw Crowley again after their trip to Edinburgh. He probably feels guilt over the incident. He knows what happened to Wee Morag was his fault, and he knows Crowley got into trouble for doing the right thing after Aziraphale did the wrong thing.
It took him 105 years to give Crowley the holy water, and he did it because he didn't want this demon he knew he was in love with to die while attempting to get his hands on the holy water. He accepted the heartbreak that came with the fear of not knowing what Crowley's true intentions were with the holy water.
Yes, Aziraphale is scared of falling. He saw what it did to Crowley, and it broke his heart because Crowley had to suffer in the process.
He loves Crowley so much it hurts. He doesn't care that Crowley is a demon. That's the Crowley that exists on the pages of his diaries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at Aziraphale's face here, right after Crowley disappears. You tell me to my face right now that Aziraphale wasn't terrified for Crowley in that exact moment.
He would do anything to make sure Hell can never hurt Crowley again. He thought taking Crowley to Heaven would solve that problem, but we've never seen Aziraphale and Crowley talk about The Fall since they never talk about their feelings.
They've been dancing for 6,000 years but they've never stopped dancing around the one topic that we are all wanting to know about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think, more than anything, that Aziraphale has been spending 6,000+ years yearning for forgiveness from his demon, but never knowing how to broach the subject. He's not human. They're not used to talking about their feelings because they've been hiding their relationship from everyone for thousands of years out of safety. Talking about your feelings is a very human thing to do, and humans are the only ones who have made progress since being cast out of the Garden of Eden (because they were given gifts by an angel and a demon).
But while both the demon and the angel are emotionally stunted, they have still always found ways to express their devotion for each other.
Aziraphale playfully getting himself captured so Crowley will have to rescue him. Crowley convincing Aziraphale to help save the world so he wouldn't lose their his bookshop.
Tumblr media
Because here's the thing...
Aziraphale had a flaming sword and he handed it to Adam as he and Eve were leaving the garden because he wanted them to be able to defend themselves.
The Bookshop seems to represent the Garden of Eden, and instead of a sword, Aziraphale has a gun.
Adam used the sword to protect him and Eve, and I think the gun is Aziraphale's version of the flaming sword he intends to use to protect his home and his demon.
Tumblr media
It would answer the question as to why Aziraphale didn't get the gun out when the demons invaded the bookshop. Crowley wasn't there, he had helped the humans escape. He used his halo as a last resort instead of his gun. The gun is personal.
And don't forget, we also have this clue that I still can't form any meta around.
