Empires Smp: A theory about Dawn's origins (Spoilers for Pixlriffs finale)

OK so earlier today I watched Pix's finale and loved it,however there was an empire he neglected to mention in his monologue of the past,Dawn,which made me wonder how it factors into everything,and I thought of an interesting idea.

Back in the opening months of the server I found a theory that Dawn was descended from Pixandrians,who after the rapture slowly forgot how to work the copper machines,replacing it with pumpkins in their builds and moving into a more temperate climate better suited to growing squashes,however with pix including his latest incarnation of David in the lore of his castle,built by a mixture of WRA and Pixandrian citizens,it got me thinking again.

My idea hinged around the idea that due to their distance from the other empires,Pixandria was protected from the worst of the rapture and by default became the strongest empire in it's aftermath,and after hearing of it's old allies misfortune, organised a relief effort to help out,with Dawn being the port used for the mass-unloading of pixandrian cargo bound for the rapture-stricken masses and grew accordingly because of it.

What if Dawn was ground zero for a pixandrian relief effort?

Adding on further to this, maybe the mass influx of pixandrians helped develop Dawn's build style into what it is today,perhaps many pixandrians settled down and tried constructing homes like those in pixandria with what they had around (since the pixandrians favoured copper was primarily decorative and much more expensive to ship across the ocean in large quantities compared to wood or stone) and substituted the missing copper with the pumpkins that flourished in dawns temperate coastal climate.

TLDR: Dawns architectural style developed the way it was due to massive amounts of pixandrian relief aid passing through it's port post-rapture.

Destiny Bond Interview

Destiny Bond is a hardcore band from Denver, Colorado. They enjoy a good craft beer, the occasional CBD gummy, wearing North Face puffy vests over collared shirts, and watching the Colorado Rockies lose. Wait, I'm thinking of my uncle Eric. Destiny Bond probably also likes those things as well. So it sort of works out.

We asked them some annoying questions and they answered them! Read below!

Q: Who is Destiny Bond? 

A: Destiny Bond is the sexy daughter of James Bond who uses seduction to accomplish her missions.

Q: Why is Destiny Bond? 

A: Because it simply must be.

Q: For the Dreyfest peeps who don’t know, where are y’all from and how’d you all meet?

A: We are Cloe, Adam, Rio, Emily and Amos. We all met through playing DIY music in the Rocky Mountain Region. 

Q: I think three of you played the very second Dreyfest, in different iterations! There are a lot of funny photos from that fest, I'll have to remember to bring them to show you. Any moments from that fest stick out in your memory?

A: I remember playing in my old band justinedrugs at that festival and having the best reaction we had had anywhere up to that point. It was awesome! I also played the first Dreyfest with my old band Weather-Control from Cody, Wyoming and with my solo project Oxen Free. -Amos

The first Dreyfest I attended was while my band stoic. was on tour with Adam’s band Caged Bird Songs. There was only room on the fest for CBS, so I just got to watch bands that time. stoic. did return to Dreyfest a few years later, we played under a basketball hoop and it was a slam dunk - Cloe

Q: Favorite city/cities to play in? I've always been a fan of Milwaukee shows myself!

A: Some of my favorites are Cleveland, Columbus, and Minneapolis. -Amos

My recent favorites are NYC, Columbus, and Springfield, IL! I may be biased but Denver is an all time favorite for me still -Cloe

Q: The band has a vitality and energy about them live and on the record - where do you source that energy (rage?) from?

A: The rage is one of the wolves that lives inside me….but honestly it is sourced from every day frustrations living as a transwoman in today’s climate, seeing the marginalized people in my community being trodden upon, and the everyday difficulties of seeing the changes I want to make personally and in the world, but struggling to find motivation for such big undertakings. I want my voice in this band to echo the part of your mind telling you to keep going, to find solutions, and to find them with and in your community in ways that bring others up with you. I want that rage to be turned into a productive and proactive force, rather than adding more negativity to already bad situations. - Cloe

Q: If Destiny Bond were a cover band for a day, who would they want to cover for a set?

A: We got caught in a really scary snowstorm outside of Rock Springs during a night drive and had to stop and stay in a hotel and then the next day we blew a tire and had to change it and put on a spare in -11 degrees. We got it fixed and made it to the show though! -Amos

I’ll just add that immediately after that harrowing experience, we played a show in a garage with the garage door open in 20° weather in SLC. I played in a hoodie, hat, and gloves, but the show was incredible with kids literally hanging off the ceiling. - Cloe

Q: What are Destiny Bond’s plans for the future? Signing a lifetime contract to be the spokespeople for an up and coming VPN service based out of Singapore that I can get you on the ground floor of no later than the end of this fiscal quarter?

A: Nah, we won’t be doing all that but we are planning on playing a show in India before the end of the year at the largest cultural festival in Asia. - Amos

Roberto Cavalli died on Sunday. I think something I noticed about Cavalli or Mugler or Rabane dying was that they loved the female form. There was a reverence for the shape and how women move in their clothes. Now designers couldn't care much or they have no incentive to care? The commercial aspect wins again. Sexuality and sensuality will prevail in the underground and DIY.

Also Faith Ringgold, the American artist who worked within quilts and paint died.

Will smoking culture in the UK be changed forever after the passing of this smoking age bill? What are the new unhealthy vices for British society? This is something to watch considering smoking came back in quite a big way over the past two years. It's related to "idgaf" culture which is very....inauthentic.

Cannes announced it's big lineup - but will there be a breaking free from these kings (incl Berlinale which....this year went terribly)? Will there be a break from the hold of A24-isms...BFI festivals do amazingly for that.

Dead internet theory > web 1.0 > IRL

Dead internet theory is defined as “its main argument is that the organic, human-created content that powered the early web in the 1990s and 2000s has been usurped by artificially created content, which now dominates what people see online. Hence, the internet is “dead” because the content most of us consume is no longer created by living beings (humans).” In the piece by Michael Grothaus for Fast Company, it is explained that there’s more bots but also the algorithm is working against influencers (which may lead to the death of them)… I mean also “Dead Internet Theory” is a conspiracy but I also think it’s partially true.

I don’t want to be the harbinger of bad news but AI is not getting the best PR at the moment. I think its ambassadors are realising that everything that has been made is better and faster. Having a level of control on how the machine works is much better than putting your hands and faith into a computer. AI is not smarter than us, it is a tool that can be used to bring up things that we have made and for it to be reformed again in a play-do-esque vision of smartness. Honestly in my opinion, craft will always be important, people are still amazed by vintage pieces.

Algorithms are eating themselves, becoming less useful to people. Creating frustration and creating distance from posting about their favourite things or work because they know their friends won’t see it. I wasn’t keen to use this Pitchfork example because it’s not really the same since they got rid of their staffers. (I say this because technically it was a prized position and running on freelancers that are recognisable to this audience is important now too). Anyway, last Friday Pitchfork's Best New Music was awarded to Cindy Lee. An artist with no social media that I can see, an album that is 2 hours long and someone who doesn’t do interviews currently but has a Geocities website where you can download wav files from. An artist on a FAREWELL tour, even. People on social media cry that tour dates are sold out and as far as I can see on Dice…they’re right.

Also the outage of instagram from last month has me thinking that people are investing so much into a platform that doesn’t even invest in them. Creatives making instagram their websites because it’s easier but what if everyone went back into making their own websites away from Meta, Elon Musk and other billionaires? The word by mouth way of sharing knowledge may prevail, trust increase? Maybe? There’s less space to discuss ideas but people can do that in real life. Like people want to experience things more than ever now but on budget. That one really good guaranteed club night, that one good film (could be Challengers/Monkey Man/pick any good film atm).

Basically right now, everything is Drake theory. Used to be fun, now middle of the road but still popular, claims to be the king but is in no way authentic, hopping from one thing to another because of money. You could say this is enshittification but I think Drake is a much better analogy because people still fill concerts arenas to see him, he’s so pervasive you can’t ignore his touch on rap culture. People aren’t turning away from him because unfortunately he makes things slightly interesting by being there.

This idea of spirituality and eating/food has become quite pervasive in culture. You see people talking about fasting - which is apparently not that good for you but I'm assuming is great for weight loss? People like Rishi Sunak who is essentially a Cali tech bro using intimitent fasting to be seen as more serious and focused to a new middle class kind of person, whereas there will always be this bigger need for food culture. On the other side is people who belong to cultures where food is part of being a part of a community. Quite the opposite to this individualistic Anglosphere culture.

Issue 3 - Water From Your Eyes

Meet Water From Your Eyes, the experimental pop-duo making waves from the boroughs of New York City. With Rachel Brown providing their passive yet alluring vocal style, and Nate Amos bringing his defining experimental production, Water From Your Eyes has managed to carve out a space of their own in today’s musical landscape.

Since taking on a more experimental approach with their sound, the duo received new levels of criticalreception with each new release. In support of their latest album, Water From Your Eyes sat down with me to discuss the new stage the duo’s career is in.

As we make our way to Koriente’s for a quick bite to eat, Rachel and Nate take me through their back-to-back schedule filled with DJ set’s, interviews, and live sessions during Austin’s Levitation Festival. Though a recent occurrence, this type of schedule is not unusual for the duo. Following the release of their critically acclaimed album Everyone’s Crushed, Water From Your Eyes has made it onto everyone’s list with features and reviews from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and NME.

Nate: A lot of the press things that happen are like, in one ear and out the other. It takes too much energy to process all of them, but there’s been a big difference between what’s happening now and early 2022.

Rachel: Yeah, I feel like now if we headlined a show in a city we don’t live in, there’s actually a chance that people will be there? We’d never done the touring thing, so it’s not like we’d been in communities outside of New York.

Prior to the critical praise received for albums such as Structure and Everyone’s Crushed, the experimental musical direction now displayed by the duo originally found itself at the cross roads of Water From Your Eyes’ pure-pop roots and Nate’s experimental solo project This Is Lorelei.

Having originally met through the Chicago DIY Music Scene, Rachel and Nate would work on music together, officially dating in the process. Following Nate’s relocation to New York, Water From Your Eyes would become the duo’s main focus, trading places with each of their solo project’s.

Nate: We just got really tight really quickly.

Rachel: We started dating and never stopped hanging out, until we stopped hanging out. Then we stopped hanging out.

Later ending the relationship and continuing the project as collaborators, the group would take on a transformation of identity during this period. Sighting their ramp up into “break up mode” as a possible source, the group quickly found themselves at an inflection point. musically.

Rachel: Yeah, that time period is very confusing. I didn’t want to work on music with Nate, so it became this thing where Nate’s solo music and Water From Your Eyes were so linked. I wasn’t paying attention at that time.

“It’s the first time we made something, and it actually made sense as a thing.”

Nate: Break/Freaking me in is a great example of this because either one of those songs could have ended up on either musical project. I think of Structure as like, the first Water From Your Eye’s album. It was a growing pain both creatively and personally for us.

A new level of unhinged creativity was brought forth by Water From Your Eyes this November with the official release of their remix album titled Crushed By Everyone. Featuring a reworked version of Everyone Crushed by incredible artists such as Sword II and The Dare, this album manages to take the inherent beauty found in each song and show them in a new and equally unique light.

Nate: Yeah, it kinda became a process where we’d make a list of people we wanted to see remix our songs and realizing which ones were realistic.

Rachel: We did ask The Flaming Lips, but they didn’t respond. Wayne Coyne does send us the most out of context photos though.

Louis Cole is a singer-songwriter and sickeningly talented multi-instrumentalist with a strong DIY aesthetic from Los Angeles, California. He is on a mission to create deep feelings through music and is the figurehead of an LA jazz-adjacent scene that includes Genevieve Artadi (with whom Cole co-founded the alt pop / electrofunk band KNOWER in 2009), Sam Gendel, Sam Wilkes, Jacob Mann, Dennis Hamm, Pedro Martins and more. He will release his new album “Quality Over Opinion” on 14th October 2022 on Brainfeeder Records. 20 tracks deep, it was written, performed and produced on his own in his modest home studio, but Louis did invite a handful of close friends to contribute, namely Genevieve Artadi (“my no.1 music collaborator”); saxophonist Sam Gendel – Cole’s friend for 17 years; pianist Chris Fishman; Nate Wood from the band Kneebody; Marlon Mackey (“a pillar of the Bakersfield music scene”); and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. “This album is a representation of me trying to make the best, most powerful and listenable music I can. For myself and also others,” he says. Louis’s main instrument is the drums and he has a background in jazz although the music he writes bears little resemblance to jazz in any pure or classical sense. His connection to the movement is more conceptual: “The root of jazz is pure freedom… no limits… just what you’re thinking right at that moment… a pure blast of limitlessness”. Accordingly Cole’s touchstones for “Quality Over Opinion” include boundary-pushing composers such as Gustav Mahler and György Ligeti alongside jazz icons like Miles Davis, the Swedish extreme metal band Meshuggah, Morten Lauridsen (distinguished professor of music and American Choral Master) and Super Mario Kart. “There is no continuous thread of a story on this album, each song expresses its own moment in my life and time,” explains Louis. “I was inspired by joy, pain and the constant mission to pull something out of life around me”. New single ‘I’m Tight’ arrives hot on the heels of ‘Let it Happen’ – “a timeless modern power ballad classic” released earlier this month. In contrast, ‘I’m Tight’ is a sleek, laser-focused Funk rocket, based on an utterly irresistible bassline. “It comes from me recording about 100 different cells of funk, choosing my favorite ones and quilting them together into a song,” says Louis. “I had to practice the bass part a lot for this one,” he adds, smiling. Cole’s insane musicianship is no secret – he’s been sharing performance videos on YouTube for a decade – growing a dedicated fanbase who appreciate both his craft and off-the-wall style. Drums, bass, keys… he has a monk-like attitude to practice and perfecting his art. Thundercat describes him as “one of Los Angeles's greatest musicians” and earlier this year invited him to play drums on his recent tour of Japan. Touring incessantly, Louis sold out two shows at EartH Hackney (1k cap) in London during his last UK tour. in light of the last post, i actually had some cringe little thoughts about warped tour and alternative music typed out in my drafts a year ago:

i genuinely think the end of warped tour was such a massive blow to alternative culture in general. i get that in 2018 they were probably not making any money whatsoever for years but. it's always been a major venue for younger bands without industry connections and for bringing DIY bands to attention. they literally had a battle of the bands side thing going on where local bands competed in front of a crowd and the crowd decided which one's could move up to bigger stages! and even further, you had all these small bands coming there year after year and following the tour without being on it just selling their homemade DIY records to kids waiting in lines. i mean look at ice nine kills for example, they're a pretty big band nowadays, right? they wouldn't have gone anywhere and literally just stopped exisiting before 2010 if their singer didn't literally tell kids at warped tour to "check out his mixtape", so to speak. what do you do nowadays, hope the tiktok algorithm picks you up? it's especially sad because just two years since the end warped there's a massive alternative culture revival and how many great musicians are completely flying under the radar because they didn't get added to the right spotify playlist at the right time? it probably seems small in the grand scheme things but i genuinely feel that a lack of festivals like warped tour and similar real life spaces is a huge reason for the current emo comeback feels so goddamn engineered and gentrified and boring.

and bringing new blood to the scene aside (and not just bands that were handpicked by an algorithm pushing hand picked instant-gratification content), it's also been just such an important place of genuine community for not just alternative music but skate culture, street art etc too. i mean there wasn't even just music there but a lot of other things for culture too, skate parks at minimum. i think the importance of shared lived experiences for subcultures can't be understated, or we end up with the aesthetization of subcultures that's all over the internet now.

also notable is that it wasn't even expensive! you had enormous amounts of kids coming there because it was literally just 30 bucks! that's literally insane for a festival of this size!

how much warped actually did for the music was imo also extremely obvious in the way it's talked about/perceived: all these prestigious and completely unaffordable festivals like coachella are basically just a social media show, there's absolutely zero culture and nothing is actually about the music there, whereas people looked at warped tour as just this cringe little thing with a ton of cringe little kids but guess what! these kids were always the ones carrying alternative culture on their shoulders!! and now they're being spoonfed by tiktok!

Due to La Squadra’s line of work, their holiday festivities are rather simple. For the most part, Christmas eve and day is a break from having to plan and execute missions unless a special circumstance requires them to work on those days. 

I like to think that La Squadra just throw a simple party among themselves. Some people buy food or snacks to share, alcohol is passed around, and they might go see some outdoor Christmas decorations in the evening time. But the big thing that they always do is the White Elephant exchange. 

So, here are my headcanons of how La Squadra does White Elephant.

White Elephant started because it was too much of a hassle to buy a gift that can be catered to a person’s needs. 

Plus it would be too expensive to figure out to buy for everyone given their budget. 

So, a White Elephant is a way to not only splurge once and not worry about whether someone hating their gift but also a way to destress and be goofy. 

Because this is also a great time to gift gag gifts and laugh at whatever unfortunate soul was given that gift. 

A few members are involved in gag gifting, thinking that it what makes White Elephants meaningful, and some people disguise their gift wrapping too. 

Rules are pretty simple. Turns are picked and gifts can be stolen three times before they’re locked. The first person to pick gets to steal at the end. No one can steal their own gifts. 

Prosciutto hates giving out gag gifts. He’s too serious to do that. 

So, all of Prosciutto’s gifts are actual useful things. He’s given out nice kitchenware, decorative throw blankets, skincare sets, and similar. 

Unsurprisingly, everyone wants his gift because his gifts are actually good on the long run. 

This year he’s giving away a new condition mini oven air fryer he got for sale. Ghiaccio won that one after an intense stealing session. 

Formaggio is the type of person that gives a gift that’s based on that year’s memorable event and it doubles as a gag gift too. 

For example, his 2019 gift was a “Storm Area 51” survival kit he DIYed and his 2020 gift was a large set of toilet paper and face masks in bulk. 

This year, his 2021 gift was a fountain that was actually a toy model recreation of the Ever Given container ship getting stuck in the Suez Canal. 

Sorbet won that one and absolutely hates it, but nonetheless impressed with the detailing- down to the backhoe trying to shovel the ship out. 

Melone likes to get experimental with his gift wrapping, sometimes making people wonder which one is his gift.

That’s because his gifts are certificates or tickets to events, so they’re often pieces of paper and he likes to get creative. He prefers giving experiences as gifts. 

His gifts are also sought after second to Prosciutto, and has previously been things like spa packages, musical performances, and bookings to sought out restaurants. 

This year’s gift is tickets for two to see Queen and Adam Lambert preforming in Bologna for 2022. He made his wrapping look like a Squishmellow and Risotto won it.

Now everyone’s wondering who Risotto’s plus on for this event. Risotto himself is still deciding.  

Pesci always DIY’s his White Elephant and has the most variety when it comes to gift giving. He feels bad for doing gag gifts, so he puts in the effort to make his gifts meaningful and useful.

His previous gifts include potpouri, watercolor sets, and succulent displays, to name a few. He also has the nicest gifit wrapping due to Prosciutto’s insistence. 

This year, Illuso got his gift- which was a hand-bound recipe book for sweets and pastries that Pesci made himself. He made a big deal about getting such a “girly”  gift but he secretly likes it. 

Gelato is the KING of gag gifts. He grew up with gag gifts, he insists on doing gag gifts. 

He doesn’t go all out like Formaggio or shitty like Illuso, but they’re still gag gifts in general. To give you some ideas, he previously gave out a Cat Paw 3D Mousepad one year and another year he gave a Mini Wacky Waving Inflatable Tube Guy. 

This year, he gifted the Mini Tabletop Pool Game, which Prosciutto won. Surprisingly, Prosciutto actually liked the gift despite hating gag gifts in general.

Ghiaccio isn’t into gag gifts, but he’s just so TERRIBLE at gift giving in general that his gifts are often mistaken as a joke than genuine.

Part of it is just him still new to the whole White Elephant thing and him taking things literally means he doesn’t really understand the concept completely.

One time he gave a bulk set of hemorrhoid cream and was confused at why people found the gift funny, especially when Illuso ended up getting it.

It was on sale and had holiday wrapping on it, so he thought it would look nice and was a bit upset when it wasn’t the case.  

At least this year his gift was pretty nice. He gave a cute large snow globe that had a ballerina that had a music box that plays the Sugar Plum variation.

Pesci won the gift. No one wanted to steal because they knew he loved the gift and let him have it. Ghiaccio spent the rest of the party bragging at how great his gift was. 

Sorbet is very particular with his gifts, since he wants to get a good gift while saving him a ton of money. His gifts end up being okay nonetheless. 

Sometimes he’s lazy and shares his gift contribution with Gelato instead. Sorbet’s gifts tend to come from the thrift store or were given to him by nonnas trying to clean out their houses of clutter. 

This year, Melone got his gift and it ended up being a set of those marbled candles that have crystals inside of them. He loves it!

No one understands why Melone loves candles and crystals so much, but as someone who’s typically calm and rarely shows strong emotions outside of missions, he was beaming like a kid on Christmas. 

Illuso, on the other hand, is a toss-up when it comes to White Elephant: either you’re getting a really nice gift this year or a really shitty gift instead. 

He’s the type of person that shops last minute for gifts and gets what catches his eye at the time. Sometimes, he’s too lazy and puts a box full of rocks or sand.

Despite being last minute with his gifts, he is also another person that takes time to disguise his gift wrapping for the humor of it. 

Formaggio figured out which gift was Illuso’s and was expecting something shitty. He found out it was an inflatable sumo wrestler costume and immediately sought out to steal it.

He won it in the end and wore it for the rest of the day Unfortunately, it popped as soon as his cat got its claws on it when he got home, still in the suit. 

llluso offered to get him a new one but Formaggio said it was okay; he can patch it up with some duct tape and remember to not carry his cat while wearing it. 

And finally, Risotto. He’s also not the best gift giver but he tries his best. 

Sometimes he’s so busy he just gives out an amazon gift card or a “1 day off” coupon. Sometimes he just gives out a premade gift set he found at the store. 

This year, he wanted to give something special. He made a simple wine gift basket, with Prosciutto’s help, that included some decent wine, nuts, and cigars. 

Gelato ended up winning the basket, although he did it by strategically making Sorbet steal for him in case he isn’t able to get it. 

Those two immediately used the gift to wine dine and 69.

World Techno Day - Is there any techno in Russia and who should we look out for?

HOW TECHNO CULTURE WAS DEVELOPING IN RUSSIA

By 1991 techno raves had reached Russia. Just a week before the collapse of the USSR there was a big party called the Gagarin Party. It was so significant for the whole techno community that at first it was looked after by its followers.

It was held according to all traditions in a deserted pavilion "Kosmos" on VDNKh. The building had no heating, no cloakroom, no show-room, but there was something more - 3,000 people and a DJ playing techno.

WHAT NOW?

For a long time, the hallmark of rave parties in Moscow was club ARMA17. But after a tragic fire in the permanent building, the party stopped being limited to one place and started migrating all over the country. Parties are held everywhere: from the capital to the south of the country, as well as abroad: in Berlin, New York, Bucharest, Barcelona, Rome.

RUSSIAN TECHNO RAVES

The biggest and most popular techno-festivals and communities in Russia include: Zulu Warrior, Oberton, Triptych, Boiler Room, Ona techno party, GAMMA, Signal and others.

Thanks to promotional groups including GOST Sound, Popoff Kitchen, System 108, Monasterio, and large events such as Signal in Nikola-Lenivets Art Park, Russian techno fans can listen to Russian and foreign artists live.

HOW DO OTHERS FEEL ABOUT IT?

Of course, the older generation is suspicious of such gatherings, and with good reason.

Today, just like in the '90s, techno-parties symbolize protest and a way to forget everything, at least for one night. This is encouraged by the fact that in the last few years, rave clubs have often been declared "non-grata" establishments.

AND THE STATE?

Whether techno should be recognized as a musical genre in Russia at the state level?

According to Russian lawyers, such a change at the state level makes no sense and now we will explain why:

DJs in Russia can simultaneously refer to both authors and performers. There are no concepts of "DJ", "singer" or "musician" in the law; everything is designated by the words "author" and "performer" and is not divided into genres.

In the case of Germany, the law (recognising DJs as musicians) was a forced measure - DJs were not recognised as musicians and the clubs paid a high tax. We don't have such a problem, in this respect our legislation is better than the German one. If you give privileges based on the classification of music, it will oppress performers and authors of other music genres.

WHO TO WATCH OUT FOR

Nina Kraviz

Producer, occasional vocalist, and DJ Nina Kraviz hails from Irkutsk, Siberia. Kraviz fell under the spell of house music during the mid-'90s through radio. A few years later, she moved to Moscow for the sake of studying dentistry, and was briefly part of a trio called MySpaceRocket. The group released one 12", 2007's "Amok," a lean house track with a deep bassline and Kraviz's breathy vocals; the B-side featured a version from U.K.. DJ legend Greg Wilson. Kraviz subsequently went solo and made a splash in 2009, when she issued productions on Efdemin's Naïf, Jus-Ed's Underground Quality, and Matt Edwards' Rekids.

I feel like he’d also go out of his way to breed black roses but that may just be me 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

His home is a toss up: on one hand it could be very chill and cozy, but on another I’m seeing workout gear in one corner and iron tables and a TV and radio going, maybe (definitely) a music studio setup (similar to Weber’s home but more hardcore LMAO)

All in all, I think Chan would be a chill/causal player that would be happy to help his friends and community while also playing hard ball once in a while just to mess with everyone 😂♥️

And if you disrespected that, there’d be blood to pay

I can see his character closely resembling him as well, with a little paw print on his cheek? Maybe some whiskers?

The worst of Bangers - playlist

Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2ZZ3PEFfGCqNIVWUVpFt9t?si=4842722153114449 Intro Unbearable narcissist that I am, I was thrilled to see that Isaac Asimov’s Foundation was being adapted into a big budget straight-to-the-internet TV series not because I honestly thought it would be any good, but because I hoped it might finally vindicate one of Bangers’ most (perhaps unfairly?) maligned songs if a few more people consumed the source material that it was an extremely concise precis of. As it happens I’m proper enjoying the series, faithless as the adaptation is - incorporating both emotions and women (two of my favourite things) neither of which were really even hinted at in the books. This train of thought, the fact that Small Pleasures turned 10 earlier this year, and my realisation that I find most of the Bangers back catalogue to weigh heavily on my creative soul as well intentioned but badly executed trash, led me to create a Spotify playlist called The worst of Bangers and write this accompanying blog to revisit some of the most forgotten, dismissed and/or reviled deep cuts. Before I start, these songs are included for a variety of metrics, often because they have a noted down-turn of listens on Spotify compared their album position. That’s not a great metric for a band who split up before Spotify achieved the godlike ubiquity that it now enjoys, but c’est la pomme de la terre. If you can hum any of these songs just by reading their names then you’re doing better than me 3 hours ago. Asimov When Bird was released, I remember several people telling me that this song shouldn’t have made the cut. I got the impression that some people thought it was a joke that didn’t sit that well on an album that was mostly dwelling on depression and suicide, and some others thought it was just a bit shit. Exactly nobody told me that they understood what I was getting at, so for the sake of posterity I’ll explain what it meant to me. Foundation – as I see it – is a musing on humankind’s repeated inability to learn one of the most universal lessons. The story begins with the fall of the Galactic Empire, and each subsequent generation confronts a crisis which requires rejecting the philosophy of the previous generation. Each time, the ruling forces adamantly refuse to realise this – rigidly adhering to the most recent philosophy - until one character tricks them into it and saves the day, thus ushering in a new age. I find the prescience of this to be one of the most depressing facts of human existence, and something I was wallowing in at the time, hence the song. Listening back I think the chorus is great, and Andrew’s weird bass slide in the middle is a joy. Vibrate This song is undeniably cool, but every time we played it people stared at us like we were stupid. I think it’s the emotional pay-off for Bird, after such a miserable time it’s just an acceptance that probably the healthiest thing to do is to accept defeat and plod on ignoring all the glitzy wiff-waff and intriguing mysticism in the world. This is the Bangers song I still sing to myself when I’m doing really practical DIY like building shelves. The truth that I’m more of a practical ox of a guy than an ethereal waif has been one of the healthiest realisations of my life. Stressful Festival The only thing that I ever heard said about this song was that it sounded ‘like Bangers’ on an album that largely didn’t. I think that’s bullshit, Bangers very rarely played this kind of classic on-the-beat punk vibe. Two interesting facts about this song: 1. I remember writing all the guitar riffs in Berlin after playing with De Cracks in the Ramones Museum and their Ramones-core translating much better to acoustic guitar than any of Banger’s music did. 2. While recording I puked in my mouth singing “sick to death of every one of you” and swallowed it again before coming in for the last chorus. If you listen really hard you can hear it coming up. A Quite Different Coastline In amongst the fairly weird Crazy Fucking Dreams album, this song performs especially badly with people who aren’t in Bangers. I think it rips, but Spotify figures confirm a proper dip compared to the rest of this album. I just don’t know what’s wrong with people sometimes! Bad Jokes Someone in Austria told me to my face that this song was too boring, and we pretty much stopped playing it after that. I think it has a janky song structure, and the nearest thing to a chorus it has (none of the songs on Crazy Fucking Dreams really have a chorus) isn’t that catchy, but I think the song is OK. I can confirm that nobody ever shouted for us to play it live. The Nick of Time OK, here’s a proper deep-cut. It’s the first B-side from the Blind Hindsight single, and I couldn’t remember anything about it before listening today. I remember we cut it from Crazy Fucking Dreams because it didn’t sit well with the other songs, but on reflection it really carried the core message that I was trying to get across in that album. Namely that history forgets just about everybody, so why should we feel obligated to be interested in anything that’s mainstream enough to be remembered. I suspect that the lyrics are not that relatable, but they’re a good diary entry for me to remember the first person I ever watched die. Log Jam Second B-side. I believe we only ever had two B-sides. We recorded this in our practise room in Exeter, and I seem to remember we tracked it back to front with the piano first and drums last. Maybe Hamish was at work until late or something. This is the song to drag out if anyone tries to tell you Bangers were just a gruff punk band who sounded like The Menzingers. I think there’s a weird time signature change, and that’s probably not because we were trying to be clever if you know what I mean. A man like Jack McCall This is named after the guy who shot Wild Bill in Deadwood. I loved that show, but at the time I knew I was much more a drunken cowardly shit-heel than any of the heroic (or at least stoic) characters. It was on the Good Livin’ EP which I find mostly unlistenable because of some very sketchy guitar playing. This was the weird plodder at the end which we probably played live a handful of times and then realised that nobody really wanted to hear it and it wasn’t that fun to play. Every night’s a date night On the subject on not being fun to play, this song was always a pain. Something about the timing at the start just baffled Hamish, so we ditched playing it as soon as we had enough songs. However in my mind this is one of THE archetypal Bangers songs, it’s got that lolloping, on-the-push rhythm, not a normal power chord in sight, and three quite distinct sections without anything approaching a chorus. Small Pleasures is definitely our most listened to album on Spotify, but where some of those songs really defined how Bangers were perceived, this never really landed. The Love Nest I straight up laughed out loud today when I saw we’d called a song The Love Nest. I couldn’t remember anything about it until I listened to it today for the first time in years. We played this a lot when we were relevant to the DIY scene in about 2011, and I think people used to sing along. It’s included here because I fully forgot it existed. There was a positive vibe (when no one was left alive) + Walking on the ground These two songs make up the Last Songs EP (single?) that we just about managed to release in time for our last ever show. I think we’d decided to split up by the time we recorded them, but I wouldn’t put money on it. I don’t know if we ever played Positive Vibe live, which is a shame because both songs are great. I think the album that these songs were meant to become would have nailed a good mix of dirty pop that we were aiming at in that moment. We probably would have messed it up though. Outro After I put this playlist together I went and listened to Challenger – Give people what they want in lethal doses as a pallet cleanser. I heartily recommend you do the same.
