Frequently used tags
Hi all, I just edited the pinned post on this blog, but I thought I'd share this in a seperate post with you all too. For anyone who is curious about the tags I use...
Frequently used tags:
#polls - for any non-tournament polls
#not a poll - for any posts that (you guessed it) don't include polls
#other tournaments - for all posts from other tournament blogs (polls, submission forms, and sometimes non-polls)
#submission form - for all submission forms (from this or other blogs)
#results reblog - for when I'm sharing results of a poll (usually polls from this blog, but occasionally other tournaments/polls too)
#reblog at another time - for polls I've (re)blogged before, without any additional propaganda or anything.
#news coo delivery - for propaganda on ongoing tournaments from this blog.
#not op - for the very incidental post that has nothing to do with One Piece (which I try to keep to an absolute minimum).
#ask - for any answered asks/messages.
#about this blog - for posts that are about the blog itself (like this one).
You can block any tags you don't want to see, of course. You can also search for them on my blog (in the app) or use tumblr.com/onepiece-polls/tagged/[# you want to look up, without the actual '#'] if you're on browser if you want to check the posts in one of those tags.
Besides these general tags, every tournament has its own tag too, but that will be announced at the beginning of each tournament (and you can see on those posts). The current tournament is going by #opla fan cast polls.
I probably forgot some tag I often use, so if you've noticed one or you got a question about a tag, let me know!

Note
that ask was rude of me, i should've just blocked you instead of telling you about it, i'm sorry. i'm aroace and sex+romance repulsed, and i guess i thought alastor was gonna be something i could enjoy for once like everyone else gets to without feeling like i'm intruding on a conversation i have no right to be part of. i'm on ios so i can't use browser extensions to actually get rid of all the alastor ship posts like i want, and i'm not sure my problem even has a solution short of just giving up trying, because so far i have found exactly zero blogs that are 1.) still active at all, 2.) still post about Hazbin, 3.) aren't actually 12 years old, and 4.) don't post about fucking Alastor ships. i got so excited seeing such good, recent art i haven't nuked yet considering how old every other post i can still see is, and i'm not kidding when i say i sent that ask through tears. it was rude and unacceptable either way, and i'm sorry.
i've blocked over 200 different people and i'm not exaggerating that number even a little bit. i would rather put a gun to my head and pull the trigger myself than see them so much as breathe next to each other ever again. i am so. so so so so so sick of searching and searching and searching and finding nothing.
the thing i've learned from alastor's aroace representation is that not only is the world as a whole not made to accommodate me, fandom space isn't either. i am an alien on a planet i was never made to fit into, and i don't even get to escape that through fiction like everyone else does. no amount of filtering and blocking and searching will bring into existence a community for me that simply does not exist, and it is futile for me to try. that's what this fandom has taught me.
i think the chances of me sticking around in this fandom are slim, so at least it won't be an issue for anyone else anymore. i think being excluded from conversations about an aroace character sting a lot more than just not being represented at all to be honest.
Okay, listen.
First of all, Alastor is officially an Ace, NOT an aroace. That means he can still be interested in any romantic things or finding a couple. No one is stopping you from seeing him exclusively as an aroace. But shaming people who don't share your point of view is a bad idea.
Secondly, I am an aroace artist myself. Romantic and sexual themes are virtually non-existent in my art. I can joke about it, but almost all of my drawings explore completely different things. And you come to me and try to talk about how hard it is to feel socially comfortable being an aroace? I understand your worries, but, again, trying to shame other people because they don't share your point of view is NOT a healthy coping mechanism.
Third, I have done THREE drawings in all my time that include a romanticized Alastor. Two of them were collabs, and the third was asked to be drawn by people. And these three drawings made you give up on my art, which you said you really liked?
The community is too heavily oriented towards romantic and sexual themes, it's true. People like us are often uncomfortable in that environment, that's also true. But aroace people can't just come in and ban others from having fun just because we don't find that fun or interesting.
Tumblr media
Man, I'm not even Alastor's artist! What the kind of Alastor shipper am I? And you picked me out of a thousand people to block? Oh my God, that's as funny as it is sad.
In case you haven't looked at my art, I am a Lucifer artist. I very rarely draw Alastor, simply because I don't find him interesting enough. And because of that, I find it so funny to be labeled an “Alastor shipper”

hi, can i get a tutorial on how to put tags as a link? i wanna do mine for my blogs 😞
sure! i assume you're referring to this sort of thing i do in my masterlist and at the bottom of my posts to point readers toward similar content--
more Price / more Gaz / masterlist
how to make tumblr tags into links
first, and this may go without saying, but make sure you have at least one post on your blog with the tag you intend to link.
first method: desktop (recommended)
1. navigate to your blog on the left-hand sidebar.
2. then, on the other sidebar--right side--select "view blog." you should be seeing your blog the way any other user would, including its custom colors, header image, etc.
3. navigate to the post with the tag you want to turn into a link.
4. go to the post's tags and right-click the one you want (or command-click; whatever it takes to bring up the menu).
5. copy the url from there. the url should look something like "https://www.tumblr.com/[yourblogname]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]." alternatively, left-click the tag and let it take you to the "[...]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]" page itself, then copy that url from your address bar.
6. now, wherever you want to add it (like in a new post), type out the text you want to display--
all my homemade posts
7. --highlight it, and and use tumblr's hyperlink function to link the "[...]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]" url to that text.
8. click the linked text you made just to be sure. you should end up with something like this:
all my homemade posts
second method: mobile
this method is more roundabout. i haven't found a way to do this solely through the app, so you'll need to use a combination of the tumblr app + your phone's browser.
1. navigate to your blog in the tumblr app .
2. navigate to the post with the tag you want to turn into a link.
3. select the arrow at the bottom of the post to send/open the link in your browser of choice. alternatively, select the meatball menu (‱‱‱) in the top-right corner of the post, copy the link, go to your browser of choice, and open that copied url.
4. in your browser, go to the tags of your post and select the one you want.
5. copy the url from there. the url should look something like "https://www.tumblr.com/[yourblogname]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]." alternatively, select the tag and let it take you to the "[...]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]" page itself, then copy that url from your address bar.
6. now, wherever you want to add it (like in a new post), type out the text you want to display--
all my homemade posts
7. --highlight it, and and use tumblr's hyperlink function to link the "[...]/tagged/[thetagyouwant]" url to that text.
8. you should end up with something like this:
all my homemade posts
and you're done. happy hyperlinking! b(ïżŁâ–œïżŁ)d

Easy Tips for Making Your Website Mobile-Friendly
With the increasing number of people using mobile devices to browse the internet, it's crucial to have a website that functions smoothly on smartphones and tablets. If your website isn’t optimized for mobile, you could result in losing a large portion of your audience.
We understand the importance of making your website mobile-friendly. In this blog, we’ll provide you with easy tips to help you optimize your website for mobile devices.
1. Choose a Responsive Design
The first and most important step in making your website mobile-friendly is to use a responsive design. A responsive design ensures that your website automatically adjusts to fit different screen sizes, whether it’s viewed on a smartphone, tablet, or desktop.
With responsive design, your website’s layout, images, and text scale correctly across all devices. Users can now interact smoothly and comfortably without having to zoom in and out. Many content management systems (CMS), like WordPress, offer responsive templates that are easy to use and customize.
2. Optimize Your Website's Speed
Mobile users often browse the internet more frequently compared to desktop users. If your website takes too long to load on a mobile device, users are likely to leave and jump to another website.
Tumblr media
Here are a few ways to improve your website’s speed:
Compress images: Use image compression tools to reduce the file size of images without compromising quality.
Minimize JavaScript and CSS: Reduce the size of JavaScript and CSS files to speed up loading times.
Enable browser caching: Browser caching allows returning visitors to load your website faster by storing some data locally.
3. Use Readable Fonts
Text readability is key to a great mobile experience. When users are browsing on a smaller screen, it’s important to use fonts that are easy to read. Avoid fonts that are too fancy or too small.
Few font tips:
Font size: Make sure your font size is at least 16 pixels for easy reading on mobile devices.
Line spacing: Ensure there is enough spacing between lines to improve readability.
Contrast: Use a high-contrast color scheme for text and background to make the content better.
4. Simplify Your Navigation
Make sure your website’s navigation is simple and easy to use. A clear and concise menu allows users to find the information they need quickly, without unnecessary scrolling.
Ways to simplify navigation:
Use a hamburger menu: A hamburger menu is a compact way to display navigation options on mobile devices.
Limit menu options: Focus on your most important pages and limit the number of menu items.
Make buttons touch-friendly: Ensure that buttons are large enough and spaced properly so users can easily tap them with their fingers.
5. Avoid Pop-ups and Intrusive Ads
Mobile users are frustrated if you use unnecessary pop-ups and intrusive ads that block content. Pop-ups can be annoying on mobile devices where the screen space is limited. Google also penalizes websites that use intrusive pop-ups, which can lower your search engine rankings.
If you use pop-ups, make sure they’re easy to close and don’t take over the entire screen. Also, avoid placing ads that disrupt the user experience.
6. Test on Multiple Devices
One of the best ways to ensure your website is mobile-friendly is by testing it on multiple devices. What looks good on one device may not work as well on another. Take the time to test your website on different screen sizes, from smartphones to tablets, to ensure a consistent experience for all users.
Here’s how you can test your website:
Use browser tools: Many browsers offer built-in developer tools that allow you to simulate how your website looks on different devices.
Test on actual devices: If possible, test your website on real devices to get a better experience and how it functions.
Use online tools: There are several online tools, such as Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test, that can help you evaluate how well your website performs on mobile devices.
7. Make Forms Mobile-Friendly
If your website includes forms, make sure they’re easy to fill out on mobile devices. Long forms with multiple fields can be overwhelming on small screens, so it’s important to keep them short and simple.
Here are some tips for mobile-friendly forms:
Use larger input fields: Make input fields large enough for users to tap without errors.
Minimize required fields: Only ask for the necessary information and avoid overwhelming users with too many fields.
8. Prioritize Mobile SEO
Optimizing your website for mobile SEO is important for improving its visibility on search engines. Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily uses the mobile version of your website for ranking and indexing.
To improve your mobile SEO, focus on these areas:
Mobile-friendly design: Ensure your website is responsive and easy to navigate on mobile devices.
Page speed: Fast-loading websites is crucial for good mobile SEO.
Optimize content: Ensure your content is concise and relevant for mobile users, as they tend to browse quickly.
Conclusion
Making your website mobile-friendly is an essential step in providing a better user experience and improving your online visibility. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your website looks and performs well on any mobile device. At Global Key Info Solutions, we’re here to help you create a seamless mobile experience that drives engagement and boosts your online presence.

Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Installing Software
Tumblr media
With the ever-increasing use of messaging platforms like WhatsApp for communication, individuals and organizations are interested in monitoring messages. Whether you’re a parent concerned about your child's online safety or an employer wanting to track workplace communication, the question arises: Can you spy on WhatsApp messages without installing software? This blog aims to answer that question and explore the different facets of monitoring WhatsApp messages without downloading or installing additional applications.
1. How to Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Installing Any Software
The idea of spying on WhatsApp messages without installing any software is appealing. It means you don't have to tamper with the target phone or risk being detected by app notifications or strange permissions. But how can this be done?
One of the most common methods is through WhatsApp Web. Here’s how it works:
WhatsApp Web: This feature of WhatsApp allows users to access their messages on a computer by scanning a QR code from their phone. By gaining temporary physical access to someone’s phone, you can open their WhatsApp Web on your browser and keep the session open, thus monitoring their conversations remotely without needing any additional software.
The steps to do this:
Open web.whatsapp.com on your computer.
Open WhatsApp on the target phone.
Go to WhatsApp Web from the settings.
Scan the QR code shown on your computer with the target phone.
Once connected, you’ll be able to see all the messages exchanged on the phone. It’s important to note that the phone will need to stay connected to the internet for you to continuously spy on the messages.
2. The Easiest Way to Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Downloads
If you’re looking for the easiest way to spy on WhatsApp messages without downloading any software, WhatsApp Web remains the most straightforward method. However, there are a few limitations:
The target phone must remain connected to the internet.
WhatsApp Web logs out after a while if not used, and the target user might notice if they check their WhatsApp Web section.
You’ll need physical access to the phone at least once to scan the QR code.
Another method that doesn’t require software installation but involves more advanced knowledge is using network sniffing tools. Tools like Wireshark can capture data packets sent through a Wi-Fi network. If both the target phone and your computer are on the same network, it is technically possible to capture WhatsApp messages. However, this requires substantial technical knowledge, is illegal in most regions, and violates privacy laws.
3. Is It Possible to Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Installing Software?
The short answer to this question is: It’s possible, but there are significant limitations.
While it is tempting to find a solution that allows for completely undetected spying without software, the truth is that the most effective methods involve installing a third-party monitoring app. The closest you can get to spy without installation is using WhatsApp Web or some advanced network monitoring techniques.
For most users, third-party software like HackersList, FlexiSpy, or others remains the most reliable solution, but these require installation on the target phone.
4. Spy on WhatsApp Messages Remotely: No Installation Required
Can you spy on WhatsApp messages remotely without installing software? Yes, but only under specific conditions.
If you can gain temporary physical access to the phone to set up WhatsApp Web or if you have access to their iCloud or Google backup (in the case of iOS and Android devices respectively), you can monitor their WhatsApp messages remotely without any additional software.
Here’s how the iCloud or Google Drive method works:
WhatsApp backs up messages to the cloud periodically.
If you have access to the iCloud or Google account of the target user, you can download and view these backups.
However, keep in mind that WhatsApp backups are often encrypted, and it may be difficult to access the messages unless you have advanced decryption tools.
This method is often difficult to pull off and may require the target’s login credentials. Additionally, it only gives you access to the most recent backup, not live conversations.
5. The Truth About Spying on WhatsApp Messages Without Installing an App
The truth is, spying on WhatsApp messages without installing an app is possible but not practical for most users. The methods that don’t require software installation, such as using WhatsApp Web, still require physical access to the phone or access to cloud backups.
More advanced options, such as using network monitoring tools, can be complicated and illegal. Moreover, most spying solutions that truly provide effective monitoring over time involve some form of app installation, even if they are discreet.
If you’re looking for a way to spy on WhatsApp without the target knowing, and without software, you might be disappointed. For reliable, long-term monitoring, installing a stealth app remains the most effective solution.
6. Can You Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Software?
Can you spy on WhatsApp messages without software? Theoretically, yes, but it’s highly impractical. Here’s why:
WhatsApp Web requires physical access to the phone and is easy for the target to detect.
Network sniffing requires technical knowledge and can only be done under specific conditions (same network, unsecured Wi-Fi, etc.).
Cloud backup access requires knowing the target’s login credentials, and even then, you may need to decrypt the backups to read the messages.
The takeaway is that while it’s possible to spy on WhatsApp without installing software, the methods are either temporary or require significant technical skills and legal risks.
7. Spy on WhatsApp Messages Online: No Software Needed
Many online tools and websites claim to offer WhatsApp spying services without installing software. Be wary of these claims, as most of them are scams. Many such sites promise access to WhatsApp messages simply by entering the target phone number, but these are either fraudulent or phishing schemes designed to steal your personal information or money.
If you're searching for a legitimate way to spy on WhatsApp messages online, the safest and most practical method remains using WhatsApp Web or accessing cloud backups, as discussed earlier.
Be cautious about websites that ask for payment upfront without any proof of service delivery. Always research thoroughly before trusting such platforms.
8. Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Physical Access to the Phone
Spying on WhatsApp messages without physical access to the phone is one of the most sought-after methods, but it’s rarely feasible without software installation.
The only way this is possible is by accessing the target phone’s cloud backups or using advanced hacking techniques, which often violate laws. Some services claim to access WhatsApp messages remotely, but many of these are either scams or involve risky methods that could compromise your data.
For instance, some third-party spy apps allow you to monitor a device remotely, but they still require initial setup on the target device, meaning you’ll need physical access at least once.
9. Legal Ways to Spy on WhatsApp Messages Without Installing Apps
It’s important to understand that spying on someone’s WhatsApp messages without their consent is illegal in many countries. Privacy laws protect individuals from unauthorized access to their communications.
However, there are a few legal ways to monitor WhatsApp messages in certain situations:
Parental monitoring: Parents may legally monitor their children’s activities for safety reasons, especially minors.
Employer monitoring: If an employer provides work devices, they may have the right to monitor communication for professional purposes, but this often requires employee consent.
In both cases, using third-party monitoring software that requires installation is the most practical and legal approach.
10. Spy on WhatsApp Messages for Free Without Any Software
Can you spy on WhatsApp messages for free without software? While it might be possible to use the WhatsApp Web method or by accessing backups, the practicality and long-term success of these methods are limited.
Most free methods still require some form of physical access to the phone or advanced technical knowledge, and they often don’t provide ongoing monitoring. Moreover, many free online tools are scams or ineffective.
If you’re looking for a reliable way to monitor WhatsApp messages, investing in reputable software is usually the best option, though it comes at a cost.
Conclusion
In summary, while it’s theoretically possible to spy on WhatsApp messages without installing software, the methods available are often limited, temporary, and not entirely foolproof. WhatsApp Web offers a quick, easy solution for short-term monitoring, but long-term, effective spying usually requires app installation.
Whether you're a parent, employer, or concerned individual, always be aware of the legal and ethical implications of monitoring someone’s communications. When in doubt, it’s best to consult legal guidelines and use reputable monitoring tools that respect privacy laws.

All right, I’ve rewritten this reply at least three times now. I don’t know when I’ll learn my lesson not to hit Ctrl+Z when I’m writing directly in the new post box. This is important though. Hopefully I don’t forget something.
I have seen so much misinformation regarding this whole epidemic. I've been trying to share what I know where I’m able.
1. Arguably the most important: If you see this message when you visit any blog on PC:
Tumblr media
This message appears because at least one post on the blog’s first page has a Community Label. It does not mean that the blog is flagged! (Technically. That part’s complicated. More on that in a minute.) The Labeled post can be original or a reblog and still generate this message.
Bear with me while I get some definitions down.
2. Community Labels and Explicit Content are two completely different features. Explicit Content is against TOS. Community Labels abide by TOS.
3. Explicit Content is what the 2018 porn ban was about. If a post has explicit content, it gets flagged and hidden. If you post/reblog enough posts that contain explicit content, your blog gets hidden. (The mosaic avatar.) If, after getting censored, you continue to post/reblog explicit content, you risk getting banned.
There is a threefold algorithm that measures the likelihood a post contains explicit content. First, it checks every time media is added to the post. Second, it checks after the post is completed (presumably based on correlation of images). Third, it checks every time it’s reblogged (presumably based on its activity history and reblog tree).
There is no opt-out/in for explicit content, other than unfollowing the source. You will see explicit content on your dash if someone you follow posts/reblogs it. Users however will be unable to find you unless they already have your exact url, or other users have reblogged your posts and the user sees them indirectly that way. Users cannot see flagged blogs on PC, but users on Android devices can still click through a warning message that looks an awful lot like the one above to still view an explicit blog. (Afaik currently, explicit-flagged blogs are not impacted by users’ birthdates, but I could be wrong. Having trouble finding up to date concrete data on that one.)
4. Community Labels were announced at the end of September 2022. They’re a way to let users tailor their browsing experience, by opting in/out of seeing posts that have a Community Label. It can be as broad as simply “This post contains some Mature themes” or as specific as “this post depicts drug use,” and the opt in/out can be customized to that degree of specificity. They’re part of the TOS, and actively encouraged. (I don’t currently know whether users can get in trouble for having too many posts get flagged for people thinking they needed Mature Labels.)
The application of Labels is user driven. OP can add Labels when they post, any user can add Labels when they reblog, and any user who encounters a post can report that they believe a post should have a Mature Label.
Minors and users of the iOS app cannot opt into visibility of posts with Mature Labels. Users on PC and in browsers can change these settings as long as they’re not a minor. All Mature Themes are toggled opt-out by default for all new users.
Blogs with Community Labels cannot be browsed by users who have opted out of seeing Mature Content. N.B. that minors, iOS app users, and new users default to opt-out, and not everyone can opt-in.
5A. While the Explicit Content algorithm seems close to 100% automated, its appeals process seems staff reviewed. Posts and users that get reported for Explicit Content don’t get hidden immediately, and it can take days to weeks to see whether staff did something about it.
5B. While Community Labels seem close to 100% user generated, their appeals seem more likely to be algorithmic in nature, based on the types of responses users have received, and based on the ways appealed posts behave. Posts that get reported for needing a Label get that Label applied immediately, and afaik that Label is applied to every iteration of the post, not just the one where a user reported it.
(Off-topic PSA: The delay is a big reason why we flag porn bots as spam, not just as porn! Yeah, reporting explicit content will mosaic-censor the blog eventually, but for the amount of time it takes for staff to review a report, the porn bot’s often already got its posts in every corner of the website, where any other bots can reblog them indefinitely. It seems way more likely for staff to remove blogs reported of spam than of explicit content alone. Yes, both spam and explicit content break TOS, but the spam flagging seems to get the blogs as a whole taken down faster. Should explicit content break TOS? That’s not within the scope of my addition.)
6. A discrimination lawsuit concluded at the beginning of 2022 regarding prejudices hard-baked into Tumblr’s Explicit Content algorithm.
7. There is a hefty rumor going around that Community Labels are algorithmic, or that they’ve been working on implementing an algorithm that can pre-screen for Mature Content. I don’t think it could possibly be that simple. Tumblr could have been developing Labels as far back as the onset of the 2018 porn ban, but they would have had between February and September 2022 after the lawsuit to review whether a hypothetical Mature Content algorithm exhibited similar hard-baked unwanted behavior. Even a partial lift of code would have been under scrutiny for compliance. And while these first two seem unlikely but not impossible, I feel it’s completely off the table that Tumblr would have set out to develop a Labels algorithm after the lawsuit, and been negligent enough to train any component of it on the old code. Tumblr is a company, and companies tend to try to avoid repeat lawsuits. It just doesn’t make sense to me that they’d reuse any of the original algorithm on the new one. (Maybe it’s the same language, and the language itself is faulty? That seems somewhat plausible?)
Just based on my experiences alone, both from what I've seen other people mention, and from what I've tested/witnessed personally, I don't think it's *possible* for Community Labels to be algorithmic in its current state.
8. My current thought process chalks most of the trouble up to good old fashioned bad actors. When a post is flagged for needing a Label, that action is implemented immediately. OP has to appeal each individual post, and the post is hidden behind that Label the entire time, regardless of whether the addition of that Label is appealed successfully. Remember, there are three entire demographics of users who are by default opted out of seeing content with Mature Themes. I have not seen it suggested anywhere that Community Guidelines have ever exhibited algorithmic behavior until this epidemic. Based on the exhibited flagging activity I’ve seen people document, it really looks to me like bigots are mass-reporting queer users’ posts to get them hidden as Mature Content--disproportionately, transwomen’s posts in particular. And then, it appears that a majority if not all of the appeals process is handled by automation, which seems to consistently default in favor of the aggressor.
Reports are anonymous, so it’s currently a really time-consuming form of anon hate. It’s incredibly time consuming for the aggressor, since they have to report each post individually. But also look at the type of person most likely to do that: they hate scroll and obsess, and browse tags for content that infuriates them, so they’re already spending that time putting negative energy toward a user.
It’s a one-two punch with Labels appeals appearing entirely algorithmic: If the appeals process isn’t reviewed by automation, that means staff is siding with arbitrary and largely transphobic decisions, regardless of whether the flagging is generated by users or flaws in the site code. If it is automated, well. That’s even more grim. And unfortunately, it really looks like it is.
9. I don’t currently know whether users can get in trouble for not applying Community Labels when they ought to be, via getting Community Labels added by other users too many times. I do not currently have anything but theories for why people have been reporting that their entire blog/account has been deleted, at a time that coincides with them publicly voicing distress that they’ve been affected by the Community Labels epidemic. Afaik there’s no retaliation against users who abuse the Labels reporting system for posts that aren’t actually Mature. There feels like no other way to read this deletion phenomenon as anything other than retaliation.
10. When I dissected the rumor that there’s a Community Labels algorithm, I don’t discredit the possibility that they’re currently working on implementing one. While I feel it’s impossible that they would’ve used anything from the Explicit Content algorithm to develop any other algorithmic features--they still very well could be developing a hypothetical Labels algorithm, but it would not use anything from the porn ban one. This epidemic behavior could very well be because they’ve been negligent enough to test beta code on a live site. Wouldn’t be a first, though this one is definitely site-breaking behavior for an entire demographic of this community.
11. My money’s on transphobes hate-reporting transwomen’s content to grief them and hide their posts from users who may not be able to change those settings themselves. My money’s on staff being too overworked to properly police its own site, and being unable to prioritize its moderation efforts where it counts most. My money’s on staff being too overworked to properly test and observe the consequences of their code, or the ethics issues compounded when multiple features interact. My money’s on staff changing some aspects of the ways Labels behave, and those changes having undesired effects that staff is struggling to parse how to fix. My money’s on a little of all of these. But a huge part of it’s got to be TERFs. Does that make it ok? No. But it does give us a likely culprit--albeit a largely anonymous one, unfortunately.
Ultimately, like dwarf-scum said, though, for it to have not been fixed immediately underscores the complexity and severity of the issue. It’s likely a combination of the above with a few other aspects peppered in. It’s all around an awful situation.
Tumblr media
thought they needed a little reminder that they still have far more to lose if they double down on this stupidity. spread the word, it seems they're... very forgetful about this.

The beauty of Hyperlinks
Day 54 - Dec 29th, 12.023
If you read any of my posts here on Tumblr, which are mostly these daily journal entries, you probably noticed something that always appears in them: Hyperlinks, most of them in any new term, brand, software, product, etc. And maybe, you thought, "why? Why so many links?", maybe even "is this a marketing strategy? Are you sponsored in some way?", and maybe if you have a similar mind to my "what are links anyway? Where they came from?". So I'm here to [try] to explain them all! Under 2 to 3 hours before the deadline of this blog post passes!
<\h2>A brief history of the World Wide Web</h2>
<p>The start of the World Wide Web was invented by English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, while working at CERN in 1989, because of the frustration of how user unfriendly the Internet was at the time. In 1989, the Internet was in its early stages, compared to now at least, in summary, most of the content that you accessed was using a terminal, commands, etc. there wasn't a "web browser", you needed to directly connect to a server if you wanted to get any time of file, information, and scientific researches (which was the main use of the Internet at the time). And also, you needed to search that file in a file system tree most of the time, relying on tagged files with keywords.<p/>
<p>Because of this unfriendly "interface" at the time, Lee created a new system/protocol, a new information system, called World Wide Web, and hosted said system on his own computer which his turned into a server. The WWW is mainly composed of two things:<p/>
<ul>
<li>Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP): the protocol built on top of the Internet's protocols, made for accessing this new way of sharing and consuming information;<li/>
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML): the markup language made to format and show text files similarly to ones for documentation and research. These files are organized in paragraphs, headers, etc. and most importantly of all: hyperlinks, small sections of texts which can embed URLs and provide immediate access to other HTML files / web pages. All said files and pages, could be viewed on a web browser, where the file would be formatted following its markup.<li/>
<p>And, as time passes, other technologies such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), for styling and "decorating" HTML documents; and scripting languages such as JavaScript, for adding interactivity to web pages and making our lives miserable, were created and are what create the Web as we know today. Everything because e scientist needed to share and access research papers and could bother to write ssh user@domain; ls -a ~/Documents | grep file in his fucking terminal, but at least, we know have Hyperlinks, something which I feel is underrated a lot of the times when using the World Wide Web.<p/>
The Wikipedia rabbit hole
If you are reading this until this point, and even more, if you're someone who uses Tumblr, you probably access Wikipedia a lot of times to find brief explanations for things you don't know, or even just to pass the time when you are low on internet. And, personally, I think that one of the best things about Wikipedia is how it's links everything, every term, topic and word with can be expanded upon, with hyperlinks. Every page has at least one link connecting it to another on the topic, and every single time, I at least hover each link to know what it's about, and probably ctrl+click to open it on a new tab to read it later, I think there's something special in that.
A lot of times you probably just end up lost, you entered on a page about JavaScript, and now is on the page about World War One for some reason. But most often than not, you end up learning something new, extended your knowledge about one topic, or even entered on a wiki about a topic you didn't even thought existed. Just by clicking hyperlinks one after another, going deeper in this network of interconnected files.
And you probably already know, but this is such a common thing when using Wikipedia, that a game was created, where you try to go from one page to another just using the links in the wiki, finding your way, trying to connect different topics.
Now think this effect, on the entire Internet.
The World Wide Web rabbit hole
To explain this, I think it's better with an example.
I had the idea of this post because of something that happened to me recently while procrastinating working on a Minecraft mod pack that I were creating for me (yes, somehow we are here now, but stay with me!). While creating packs, nowadays, I use a platform called Modrinth, where I can search mods, textures, yadda yadda... and a lot of times I try to just scroll through the list, trying to find new mods, something interesting, if maybe there's something useful that I can use that I can use.
While doing my "research", I found a mod called SplashFox, a simple and cute one that just adds a bouncy "blobfox" on the game's loading screen. I had already seen about this collection of emojis called "blobfox", but because it was hyperlinked in the mod's page, I clicked just to figure it out and see even if maybe I could use it in some project in the future as a custom emoji set for an application and things like that. The link navigated me to the emojis' author's personal website/portfolio's page about the collection. Quite a cool and beautiful website, not gonna lie.
The page had a bunch of others emoji collections, which I quite liked, and maybe I will use them in the future (all of them are licensed under an Open Source or Creative Commons license). Nonetheless, out of curiosity, I started to navigate the site and just go around seeing what it had.
The home page, very cozy... A work-in-progress "about me" page... Vector arts of dragons, the author is really talented... A notebook being worked on also... Bookmarks? Oh, "Things I found from anywhere on the internet", interesting...
And then, I found two things which stood out for me:
It had a bookmark about a microblogging platform called Firefish, one that it's connected to the Fediverse/ActivityPub protocol, so things like Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc. are all connected... and it is a fucking beautiful platform, with 4,000 users on it's main server, how the fuck I never heard of it?! I saved/bookmarked it right there, because no fucking way I will remember where to find it out of nowhere;
After that, I returned to the portfolio to see if I found something more on it. And the other bookmark that I found was a blog post/article: The peculiar case of Japaneses web design... I read all of it, right there at the moment, on one go, "out of curiosity".
I found, at least, two "interest gems", because I was searching a Minecraft mod... and one of the ones that I found, was a silly little modification about a blobby fox bouncing on the loading screen, which just happened to have a hyperlink.
That's the thing that I like to do when browsing the Web, and that's why I like to put hyperlinks on my blog posts. Because maybe, when someone read them and click on one of the links, they find a new interesting thing to learn, save, and even maybe, use in the future. That's the reason the World Wide Web was created, so always remember to put that <a> tag on your HTML, []() on your Markdown, or even, [[]] on that Wikitext page that you're creating or editing, and share new things to the world with a simple URL.

How We Made the Internet - by NationSquid This video really helped me to remember the history of the Internet, and of the World Wide Web for creating this blog entry. I really would recommend giving it a watch if you want more details and if you want to know more about how the Internet itself was created.

Generalized Sides
This was inspired by a conversation in the new Mathblr Discord server, come join if it sounds like fun!
So a polygon is a 2-dimensional shape that has a certain, finite number of sides, right? These are the parts of the boundary of the shape that are straight line segments in the plane. It seems like intuitively there are more kinds of shapes that can be said to have a certain number of sides, though. The boundary of a Reuleaux triangle, for example, contains no straight line segments but it looks like it has three ‘sides’, for some definition thereof. You might even ask how many sides a circle has, or a teardrop shape. Let’s try to generalize.
The rest of this post is written in the online math typesetting format KaTeX, so viewing it on the Tumblr dashboard is not ideal. View the post in a browser on my Tumblr page to render the math properly.
A (planar) curve \(C\) is a subset of \(\R^2\) such that there is at least one continuous function \(\gamma \colon S^1 \to \R^2\) such that \(C\) is the image of \(\gamma\), where \(S^1\) is the unit circle in \(\R^2\). We wish to define a notion of the amount of ‘sides’ and ‘vertices’ that this curve has.
The curve \(C\) is called differentiable in the point \(x \in C\) if there is some parametrisation of \(C\) such that this parametrizing function can be linearly approximated near \(x\). EDIT: if there is some homeomorphism from a real open interval to an open \(C\)-neighbourhood of \(x\) that can be linearly approximated near \(x\). The exact specifics are a little technical, and ultimately unnecessary; as long as you have an intuitive idea of what it means for a curve to be smooth at certain points it’s fine.
We will call a connected open subset \(A \subset C\) a smooth segment of \(C\) if for every \(a \in A\) we have that \(C\) is differentiable in \(a\). \(A\) is additionally called a side of \(C\) if for every smooth segment \(B\) we have that \(A \subset B\) implies \(A = B\). A vertex of \(C\) is then a point not contained in the union of all sides of \(C\).
The following three facts are true about sides and vertices:
1. If some \(x \in C\) has a \(C\)-neighbourhood that is a smooth segment, then there is some side \(E\) with \(x \in E\).
2. Any two distinct sides are disjoint.
3. If the set of vertices is finite and non-empty, and there is a parametrisation \(\gamma\) of \(C\) that is injective, then the number of sides equals the number of vertices.
Proof. This is the longest proof I’ve written on this blog so far. If you’re ever lost, I’d recommend drawing your favourite \(n\)-sided polygon, marking its vertices, then drawing a circle with \(n\) distinct points marked on it, and finally drawing a big arrow from the circle to the polygon labelled \(\gamma\).
Let \(C\) and \(x \in C\) be such that \(U\) is a smooth segment that contains \(x\). Define \(E(x) := \bigcup_{V \in \mathcal{V}} V\), where \(\mathcal{V}\) is the collection of all smooth segments \(V\) of \(C\) such that \(x \in V\).
We know that \(U \subset E(x)\), so it is not empty. \(E(x)\) is a union of open sets, so it is itself open. It is also a union of connected sets that each contain \(x\), so \(E(x)\) is connected. For every \(a \in E(x)\) it holds that \(a\) is contained in some smooth segment, so \(C\) is differentiable in \(a\). It follows that \(E(x)\) is a smooth segment. Assume that \(B\) is a smooth segment such that \(E(x) \subset B\). Then \(x \in B\), so \(B \subset E(x)\). We conclude that \(E(x)\) is a side of \(C\). Let \(A,B\) be sides of \(C\) such that there is some \(x \in A \cap B\). Then \(A,B\) are smooth segments that contain \(x\), so \(A,B \subset E(x)\). Because \(A\) and \(B\) are sides, it follows that \(A = E(x) = B\). We conclude that any two distinct sides of \(C\) are disjoint. Let \(V\) be the set of vertices, and \(\mathcal{E}\) the set of sides. Assume that \(C\) is such that \(V\) is finite and non-empty, and let \(\gamma \colon S^1 \to \R^2\) be an injective parametrisation of \(C\). \(C\) is precisely the image of \(\gamma\), so there is an inverse mapping \(\gamma^{-1} \colon C \to S^1\). Note that any continuous bijection from \(S^1\) into a Hausdorff space is a homeomorphism, so \(\gamma\) and \(\gamma^{-1}\) are additionally open maps between \(S^1\) and \(C\). For the sake of notational brevity, whenever \(x \in C\) or \(A \subset C\), define \(x_\circ := \gamma^{-1}(x)\) and \(A_\circ := \gamma^{-1}(A)\) respectively. Any finite subset of \(S^1\) is discrete, for every vertex \(v \in V\) we have that \(\{v_\circ\}\) is an isolated point. For every \(v \in V\) there is some angle \(\varepsilon(v) > 0\) such that \(B_{\varepsilon(v)}(v_\circ) \cap V_\circ = \{v_\circ\}\), where the metric on \(S^1\) is taken to be the smallest angle between two points. Let \(f \colon V \to \mathcal{E}\) be given by
\[ f(v) = E \left( \gamma \left( v_\circ + \frac{\varepsilon(v)}{2} \right) \right), \]
where \(+\) on \(S^1\) is taken as counterclockwise addition of angles. First we need to show that \(f\) is well-defined: we must show that \(C\) is differentiable at \(p := v_\circ + \varepsilon(v)/2\). Define \(A := B_{\varepsilon(v)/2}(p)\). We know that \(A \cap V_\circ = \emptyset\), and \(A\) is connected, so \(A \cap (S^1 \setminus V_\circ) = A\) is a connected open set containing \(p\) that is itself contained in the inverse image of some smooth segment of \(C\), hence \(\gamma(A)\) is a connected open subset of \(C\) containing \(\gamma(p)\) on which \(C\) is differentiable. We conclude that \(f\) is well-defined. Now we prove that \(f\) is bijective. \(V\) is not empty, so let \(v,w \in V\) be such that \(f(v) = f(w)\). By definition of \(f\) there is some connected subset \(K \subset S^1 \setminus V_\circ\) such that \(v_\circ + \varepsilon(v)/2\) and \(w_\circ + \varepsilon(w)/2\) are both in \(K\). We have that the counterclockwise open arcs \((v_\circ,v_\circ+\varepsilon(v)/2)\) and \((w_\circ,w_\circ+\varepsilon(w)/2)\) are subsets of \(S^1 \setminus V_\circ\), so we have \(w_\circ \notin (v_\circ, v_\circ + \varepsilon(v)/2)\) and \(v_\circ \notin (w_\circ, w_\circ + \varepsilon(w)/2)\). Hence the two arcs are either disjoint or equal. If the two arcs are equal, then \(v = w\) and we are done. If the arcs are disjoint, then there is no connected subset of \(S^1\) that contains \(v_\circ + \varepsilon(v)/2\) and \(w_\circ + \varepsilon(w)/2\) but not one of \(v_\circ\) and \(w_\circ\). Because \(K\) must satisfy this, it follows that \(v = w\), so \(f\) is injective. Now let \(E \in \mathcal{E}\) be some side of \(\gamma\). Because \(E_\circ\) is a connected open subset of \(S^1 \setminus V_\circ\), and \(V_\circ\) is non-empty, it follows that \(E_\circ = (a,b)\) for some (not necessarily distinct) \(a,b \in S^1\), where \((a,b)\) is, again, the counterclockwise open arc from \(a\) to \(b\). We prove that \(a,b \in V_\circ\). Assume that \(a \notin V_\circ\). Then there is some \(A \subset S^1\) containing \(a\) such that \(\gamma(A)\) is a smooth segment of \(C\). Then \(E \cup \gamma(A) = \gamma((a,b)) \cup \gamma(A)\) is a smooth segment strictly larger (because it contains \(\gamma(a)\)) than \(E\), which is a contradiction. We conclude that \(a \in V_\circ\). The proof for \(b\) is exactly analogous. Then, because \(a + \varepsilon(\gamma(a))/2 \in E\), it follows that \(E = f(\gamma(a))\), and we conclude that \(f\) is surjective, hence bijective. We have constructed a bijection between \(V\) and \(\mathcal{E}\), so the number of vertices equals the number of sides, QED.
Note that nowhere in this proof we actually used the definition of what it means for \(C\) to be differentiable in some point \(x\). In fact, if we were to replace differentiability with an arbitrary property \(\Phi(x)\), these three facts we’ve just proven would still hold true. The only thing we need is that a ‘\(\Phi\)-side’ is connected, open, and is a maximal such set on which \(\Phi(x)\) holds for all \(x\).
However, if we wanted to determine what kinds of planar transformations preserve the number of sides and vertices, we would need to use the proper definition. It is my hope that a set being a side is preserved under a diffeomorphism of \(C\), but this post is already way too long so I leave that to any curious readers :)

modvinnie replied to your post “How I Use Tumblr”
Tagging takes time (and memory) but a read more is honestly so nice. Stupid tumblr app will freeze in the middle of a long post so I can’t even see them in their entirety. But no one uses them on tumblr. At least your long posts are interesting and useful ïżœïżœïżœïżœ
See, Livejournal trained me well enough that I might actually be able to use a readmore... if they weren’t implemented so godawfully.
The problems I have with readmores are two things:
1. This is minor, but on LJ/DW, you can do a cut where you cut the middle tl;dr, but you still leave a final coda outside the cut. It would be soooo much better to be able to do ‘readmore’ on a section of long examples or on multiple sections, leaving the important summary parts visible even if they’re not at the beginning, but tumblr only lets you do it once and everything after that point is in the readmore.
2. The real reason: I CANNOT SEE THEM!
If a person deletes or if tumblr decides to mark them nsfw so their blog pops up in that sidebar view, I CANNOT CLICK THROUGH. The second half of the post is LOST.
I’ve had people make meta responses to me that they used a readmore on for etiquette reasons, but since we don’t follow each other, I wasn’t able to read their long, thoughtful comments and engage with them properly.
Outrageous, tumblr! HDU!
(I think you can still see the expansion in the app maybe? IDK... I’m usually on my laptop because the app blows in most other ways.)
I had actually started to use them some, but when I realized this issue kept happening to me, I mostly stopped.
As someone who pisses people off, I will always be in danger of my blog being deleted for too many grudge reports. (Tumblr doesn’t actually evaluate evidence as far as we can tell. They often delete without properly investigating.) I have also been shadowbanned from tags before because tumblr’s algorithms are shit--or maybe from grudge reporting or me interacting with too many also-shadowbanned pro shipper blogs.
Because of how tumblr works, even if I disappear, most of my big posts will still be available as long as the site is via reblogs. But a readmore can destroy an important chunk of the historical record. I haven’t thoroughly investigated whether you can get at the hidden text by looking at the page source in a web browser. Either way...
Not good, tumblr. Not good.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN SPAMMER
Usually it's the replacement. Compared to IBM they were like Robin Hood. The reason the expected value is so high is web services. If popular email clients did this in order to reach a few gullible people the spammer sends mail to everyone.1 When we were working on our own startup, back in the 90s, it was the same at the schools I went to, the focus of admiration is simply shifting upstream. But unlike serfs they had an incentive to create a lot of users, there won't be a long term. You have to approach them as if you were a specimen under their all-seeing microscope, and make your initial goal simply to build a solid prototype. If I spend several hours a day reading and writing email, that would cut VCs' returns from winners at least tenfold. PR firm won't bug reporters just because the client tells them to; they've worked hard to build their credibility with reporters, and they have a board majority, they're literally your bosses.
The scary thing about platforms is that there are always some that seem to outsiders to be fine, whatever else you do or don't do.2 The reason Cambridge is the intellectual capital of the world, and the third empirically false. Investors have made trouble even for the most successful companies. Central France in 1100, off still feudal. This was easy to do, but in effect I had two workdays each day, you've basically built yourself a giant tamagotchi. Maybe because the suit was also back in February, September 2004, June 2004, March 2004, September 2003, November 2002, April 2002, and February 2002.3 It might seem that the answer is simply that it's populated by adults, who are too mature to pick on you are doing the same thing: obedience.4 They're not desperate for a job.5 Another problem, and possibly an even worse one, was that small merchants were our target market, and we were paying the piper. Jobs. But the advantage of these medium-sized rounds is not just that series A rounds, that would explain why they'd care about valuations. That will change the atmosphere, and not entirely for the better.6
This is the same approach I and many other programmers use for writing software. Statistically, if you needed money on the scale only VCs could supply.7 As well as gaining points by distancing oneself from unpopular kids, one loses points by being close to them. The people you find in Cambridge are the kind of people you find in Cambridge are the kind of determination it takes to start a startup, though.8 From the Cliff's Notes, it turned out not to be so cruel to one another? But it's not humming with ambition. Startup School. The message Berkeley sends is: you should be more powerful. We just took it for granted that we had to either blow our schedules or offend people. The way adults used the word good, it seemed to be synonymous with quiet, so I grew up, it felt as if there was nowhere to go, and nothing brings people closer than a common enemy. A rounds later.
And they think of it as a group.9 Where you live should make at most a couple percent difference. For example, I think, is the problem so bad in most other countries. But the principle was the same. And if teenagers respected adults more then, because the center of gravity of Silicon Valley. Whatever you build, make it fast. Their attention is drawn to books or the natural world, not fashions and parties. This is just as true today, though few of us create wealth directly for ourselves except for a few specialists like thieves and speculators something you have to rewrite it to do more things in parallel, which is the reason they began blogging in the first place. Now most of your people will be employees rather than founders.
Notes
There are fairly closely related. 99 to—.
I suspect most of the number of big corporations. If you're part of wisdom.
Which explains the astonished stories one always hears about VC inattentiveness. Brand-name VCs wouldn't recapitalize a company has ever been. But it's useful to consider themselves immortal, because it is because those are the most fearsome provisions in VC deal terms have to go all the money. Corollary: Avoid becoming an administrator, or editions with the same gestures but without using them to switch to a can of soup.
Who continued to dress in jeans and t-shirts, to a can of soup. Price discrimination is so hard to say that intelligence is the odds are slightly worse.
Some government agencies run venture funding groups, which is to talk to corp dev people are provoked sufficiently than fragmentation. They'll have a browser and get data via the Internet into situations where a lot of companies used consulting to generate all the money invested in the Valley itself, and it would be enough to do business with any firm employing anyone who had recently arrived from Russia.
It seems justifiable to use thresholds proportionate to wd m-k w-d n, where many of which you can't distinguish between gravity and acceleration.
Free money to spend all your time working on some project of your identity. Moving your Tabletop RPG Online: First Steps
Trapped behind a fortress of toilet paper, but still want to play Tabletop RPGs with your friends? This is my quick and dirty guide to getting started running and playing your games online. Toward the bottom, I'll have links to as many digital resources to help run games as I can find. I will update whenever I find new things, so check back, and comment on what you're looking for.
Requirements
You and your RPG table folks will each need a computer, tablet, or smartphone capable of running Discord, and accessing Roll20 via a browser. Discord can run in a browser as well, but I recommend using the desktop app on your computer, or mobile app on your tablet or smartphone. Also, I strongly recommend a headset or earbuds with a mic.
Every participant will need a Roll20 dot net and Discord App account.
https://discordapp.com/ https://roll20.net/
Discord will primarily provide video and voice chat for your table. It has lots of other potential for community building, but for right now we're just going to use it so you and your fellow gamers can see and hear each other.
Roll20 is where you'll host the game itself. It is where you and your RPG crew will roll digital dice, manage character sheets, look at maps, move tokens on the battlefield, and similar. It takes some setup, but not a lot to get started.
The more preparation the person running the game puts into Roll20, the nicer and more streamlined the experience. This can be done over time, between games. I wouldn't delay play to have everything perfect, just get enough set up to get started and go.
Discord for Gamemasters
Don't worry about setting up or joining a server just yet. You don't really need one, and it often just confuses folks that are new to Discord. At minimum, the person running the game should have all the players added as friends. Go to the Friends Tab, click "Add Friends", and put in their handle, pound sign, and number. Your handle and number will be displayed somewhere in the app depending on whether you have the mobile, browser, or desktop version of the app.
Once the person running the game has everyone added as a friend, they can add them to a Group DM. The New Group DM button looks like a speech bubble with a + sign by it, and should be visible in the Friends Tab. Once everyone has been added to the Group DM, the game runner can hit either the start voice or video call button, prompting everyone else to join.
That Group DM will persist in the Friends Tab, regardless of whether anyone is actually online or in the call. People that drop from connectivity issues can pop back in by just selecting that group DM when a call is ongoing. If people are having connectivity issues, they can send text messages to the Group DM, add files, send GIFs, and similar.
The person running the Game can post news and game schedules to the Group DM, and people can chat about the game off camera/mic in between games.
Yes, you can set up your own dedicated servers, forums, and communities using Discord, but you don't need to. In my experience, Discord is just arcane enough to confuse people the first few times they run it. The desktop version of Discord will continue running in the tray, by default, even if you close the main window.
Make sure you either go into settings and turn this feature off, or shut Discord down from the tray, and/or that you've left the call when you're done. Otherwise, you'll continue to broadcast as you talk to yourself, while browsing the Internet (to the amusement of your friends still in the Group DM.)
Roll20 for Gamemasters
Like Discord, Roll20 dot net is just arcane enough to baffle people. It has a lot of functions and features, and you do not need to make use of them all to get started. Don't delay play while you figure out how to get dynamic lighting to work, or build every map for the campaign.
Just get rolling with it, hands properly dirty.
Once you're logged in, you'll need to create your first game. Once you're logged in, there should be a shiny pink button labeled, "Create New Game". Click that, and head to the next screen. Give your game a name, and don't worry about tags (if you're just playing with friends). Pick the character sheet from the drop down menu that most closely fits the game you're going to run.
This will save you a bunch of time later. Don't worry, you can change it after you've created the game if you don't like this feature.
Once you've created your game, hit the menu button, and go back to Home. Click on your game, scroll down to invite players. You can send direct invitations to the email address they used to sign up for Roll20 with, or copy and paste a link, dropping it into your Discord Group DM text chat.
After your players have accepted the invitation, have them launch the game, at least once, so the Roll20 servers fully recognize that they are participants. This will allow you to assign them control of characters, and access to handouts later. This merely saves you the time of having to make those assignments at the first game.
While your players are in the game, have them go to the "My Settings" tab, by clicking the Gear Icon in the upper right corner. Have them scroll down and set Player Avatar Size to "Names only", and Chat Tech to "None" (no video/audio). You're using Discord (which is way better), so you won't need these features.
On your game's landing page, there is a place for Game Discussion where you, or any player, can post topics, people can reply, and so forth. For important game things, you can flag posts to hang around at the top of the Discussion Feed. This is a good place to put house rules, leaderboards, game schedules, and more.
There is also a place to indicate when the next game will be, the time adjusted from your timezone, to whatever everyone else has, depending on where they live. Handy!
When you launch the game to work on it, I recommend having the Roll20 Wiki up in another browser tab. I'm going to run through some of the basics, and give a tour, but there's too much to detail in a single blog post. I'll be focusing on what you'll need to just get started.
https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page
The game view has three visible points of user interface. The vertical bar of icons on the left, the horizontal bar of icons at the top of the chat log on the right, and the game board itself. The first thing in the Chat Log should be a "Welcome" message with some helpful chat window commands. At the bottom of the Chat Log is a toggle letting you change your role from yourself, to NPCs, monsters, and even player characters (should they find themselves charmed by a dryad).
Also, note the little blue Page Toolbar button at the top in the middle. This is what you'll use to navigate between different maps, and change what players are able to see on their screens. Your view doesn't have to follow what the players are seeing.
The learning curve with the Roll20 interface is going to feel very steep at first, for you and your players. If you're already anxious about running games, this can feel overwhelming. However, once you learn even a little of how it works, Roll20 is a very powerful tool. I use it to run my local games now with a big screen TV.
It's that good. Trust me, hang in there.
Okay, you're logged into Roll20, click on the games tab, mouse over it, and click the tutorial. Watching a YouTube video is a fine way to learn, but this gets you accustomed to the tools, where things are located, and so forth. Breaking through this initial learning curve, understanding where your game assets are stored, and how to control what your players see and hear takes a minute.
If you've ever used Photoshop or any image editing tool, even Microsoft Word or OneNote, a lot of the user interface will feel familiar, functions and features much the same.
Okay, some general tips that should streamline things for you.
Make a character called "Dungeon Master", "Game Master", or similar.  In the Attributes & Abilities tab create several that are going to automatically roll for yourself via /gmroll, or for players using /roll, the most commonly used things. Passive Detection, Surprise, Random Encounters, Treasure, Initiative, and anything else you roll for multiple times per game.
Then, click the "Show in macro bar" box so they are on screen for you whenever you need them.
When uploading assets, give the file names that are searchable in an intuitive way. You can make folders and to organize your art library, but it isn't really necessary. The search feature is robust enough it'll pick through the pile very quickly, provided your file names reflect what the asset is.

Finally, in the settings for your game, add any applicable compendiums for your game, and click the box that makes them available for players. There are compendiums for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Ed, Pathfinder 2nd Ed, Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition, Dungeon World, Fate, Kids on Bikes, Pathfinder 1st Ed, Starfinder, Burn Bryte, DramaSystem, and Dialext.
A lot of these are paid upgrades, but worth the investment if you plan to stay on and use Roll20 for any particular duration. You'll find the full list on Roll20 dot net, under the Tools Menu Tab, in Compendiums.
Roll20 & Discord For Players
In the beginnning your goal should be to have fun, and understand how Roll20 works enough that you aren't slowing the game down for anyone else. Worry about macros and navigating the game as you play. Definitely watch YouTube videos, read the Wiki, and do whatever else you need to feel comfortable.
But, first, make sure you are using best application available to you for accessing the game.
There are these options for Android and iPad. (Keep reading, don't just grab one of these yet.)
Android iPad
As far as I'm aware, these are horrible, 1-2 star applications with problems, and lacking in support. Only resort to these options if you've tried every browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) available for your platform, and  can't get it on your desktop or tablet.
Likewise, do this for Discord.
Make sure you are accessing the Discord App using the best option for your platform. I have yet to find a platform where Discord isn't pretty great. Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux, all awesome with a dedicated app, or in the browser.
Figure out how to mute yourself, and be courteous to other people participating. No one wants to hear you eating chips or yelling at your kids. ;-D Also, perform and audio test with your computer and headset. Have a friend or the game master meet you online and make sure everything is working properly.
This is, literally, 75% of the battle for a game master running their first online game. Just getting people online with the right software, hardware configured properly, with a modicum of understanding of how it all works. The absolute best thing a player can do is be responsible for learning and helping others learn Discord and Roll20.
Preparing games for Roll20 takes more effort for the dungeon master than normal. You can help this along by writing background stories, doing illustrations of your character, or just making a wish list of magical items your character hopes to encounter. Taking some of the guesswork out of making the game fun for you, will greatly streamline the process for the game master.
Likewise, organizing games online is time consuming and stressful as compared to just meeting at the local game or board game cafe. Make sure you communicate with the game master your availability, and be on time for games. This sets a standard for other players. Supporting the table with your reliable presence makes it nicer for you, and everyone else.
Build some custom emote macros for your character in the Attributes & Abilities tab or your character sheet in the Journal tab above the chat log. Whenever my Warlock uses one of his class abilities at my 5e table, I click a macro button that executes one of these commands.
/em holds a rod aloft, summoning hellish fortitude! (Using his Rod of the Pact Keeper)
/em grasps a shard amulet around his neck, closes his eyes, and reaches across into the hellscape it came from. (Using his Dark Shard Amulet)
/em gains terrible fortitude following the slaying of an enemy. (Dark One's Blessing Class Ability)
/em produces a shadowy tome, bound in the hide of an otherworldly beast, flames leaping up from the script inside. (Book of Shadows Class Ability)
/em reaches back into the void, altering his fate. (Dark One's Own Luck Class Ability) /roll 1D10 [Add To Current Saving Throw]
This accomplishes three things.
It lets the game master know you're using a class ability without breaking the flow by babbling about game mechanics.
It marks the use of that class ability in the chat log for tracking purposes.
It enhances the game for other players, giving them a more vivid picture of what your character is doing.
Resources
As of writing this, Roll20 has a ton of things in the marketplace for free, tokens, maps, and modules. It is part of the response to people being stuck at home. I've included links to some notable items, but definitely cruise through all the things.
The Master's Vault, D&D 5e (Free as of writing this) Quick-Start Rules Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition The Lightless Beacon - Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition The Strange: Starter Pack - Pathfinder Playtest Flip-Mat Multi-Pack
Lone Wolf's Hero Lab things provide for Online Character Creation, Campaign Management, and regular old Classic Character Creation. It looks like they primarily provide online support for Pathfinder 2e, Starfinder, and Shadowrun 6th Generation, and classic support for Pathfinder 1e, D&D 5e SRD, and Savage Worlds.
For 5th Edition Shadowrun, there is a keen Character Chummer on Github. Also, this tool for figuring out your Priorities before you start writing things down.
For Star Trek Adventures, there is a Character & Starships tool here. Also, this fan site looks like a keen source for ideas and things.
@Tartle_Games on Twitter turned me onto a service called Astral. I haven't checked it out in detail yet, but folks that play Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Vampire: The Masquerade, Shadow of the Demon Lord, Exalted, Forbidden Lands, or Fantasy Age should probably head there and see what they've got. It looks like those games are specifically supported for playing online, and Astral appears to be free? https://www.astraltabletop.com/

How to Start a Blog
Why are you starting a blog?
Do you want to communicate something, like a message or an idea? Do you want to build a community around your love for a cause? Do you want to keep your followers and fans updated on what’s the latest with your brand? Do you want to explain how your product or service works and why people should buy it?
A blog can help you inform, educate, promote and even sell, but only if you are clear about your intention from the start.
Hence, take some time to figure out your message and the purpose of your blog. In the meanwhile, here are several reasons why many people make a blog and enjoy blogging:
To enhance writing and thinking skills
To establish expertise
To increase self-confidence
To network with others in the industry
To make money blogging
There are many ways to make money by starting your own blog; you can sell products and merchandise online or place ads and receive compensation from brands by promoting their products and services – considering that 61% of online customers make purchases based on recommendations from a blog, this could turn into a highly profitable endeavor for you.
All in all, there are four important steps to making a blog quickly. I’ll go into details on how to start a blog on WordPress later, but for now, you can review these steps. If you are familiar with these things, you can create a blog in 15-20 minutes or even less:
Carefully select the best blog platform
Find a perfect web host and get a domain name
Design your blog
Find as many useful resources as you can
The first thing you should do is find the best blog site. There are many of these, with all kinds of different features, but I use and recommend self-hosted WordPress.org. It’s one of the biggest and easiest blogging sites and it allows you to design your blog with ease. Simplicity is key here.
Free blogs have tons of limitations and downsides, but self-hosting a blog on your domain allows you to fully own your blog. That’s why you should seriously consider hosting a blog on your own domain. I tested Bluehost, a web hosting company that provides you with a free domain name, and I recommend them to all new bloggers.
If you decide to go with WordPress, you’ll get a chance to enjoy multiple free WordPress blogging themes. Go with the one that’s easy to customize and looks professional to some degree.
The more you know about social media and online experiences, the more prepared you will be to step into the blogosphere. Remember, the big fish always eats the small one, so keep learning and improving if you want to stay ahead of the curve.
Step #1: Select a perfect niche for your blog
Before you learn how to start a successful blog, you must first find your niche, figure out how to make it profitable, and figure out who your ideal readers are. In short, a niche is a topic that you write about most often, or even exclusively, in your blogs. Niche blogging is creating a blog to advertise to a particular market. Niche blogs are easy to monetize and they usually contain affiliate links, advertisements, etc., and that’s mostly how they become profitable.
How to choose a niche for your blog
To become a successful blogger, you will have to choose the right niche and work on attaining the highest form of knowledge within that topic. So pick the one that appeals to you—the one you are passionate about and most interested in. Strive for success, happiness, and recognition. By choosing the niche of interest and having your own point of view, you’ll be able to differentiate your personal blog ideas from the competition.
Step #2: Choose a blogging platform
At this stage, you’ll need to look at the best blog sites out there and determine the type of blog management tool you want to use. I recommend that you make your own blog using a self-hosted setup that I show in this guide. But before you ask yourself, how do I start a blog, let me describe each option. When it comes to popular blogging platforms, you have the following options: free and self-hosted (recommended).
Free platforms

For many new bloggers, the availability of free blog platforms such as WordPress.com, Blogger or Tumblr is tempting.
By keeping your blog on a free platform, you let the platform own your name. You’ll be subject to their rules and restrictions. If you are looking to learn how to make money with a blog, they may limit or prohibit ads on your blog, or they may even place their own ads. If you’re serious about blogging, you’ll want to move away from free blog sites.
Self-hosted platforms
Self-hosted platforms allow you to run a blog using your own domain. Aside from following your domain registrar and web hosting company’s rules, you’re fully in charge of your blog and its contents.
You have several choices when it comes to self-hosted systems (also called a Content Management System or CMS). The most popular is WordPress.org. This option is called self-hosted because you will use your own web hosting space and name. If you use our recommended hosting company, it will cost just a few bucks per month for the webspace (hosting account), and you will get a FREE name (domain) for the first year. The actual CMS is usually open-source and free.
Although I mentioned some free hosting options, the best course of action is to own your blog, especially if you will be using your own copyrighted material (articles, drawings, photos, etc.). Pay a small amount of money every month, about the same as a Starbucks coffee, and you will build your own equity. If you plan to sell products, services, music, or anything else via your blog, then this is the best way to go. Many hosting providers can help you maintain an e-commerce blog.
One of the best and most well-known self-hosted content management systems (CMS) is WordPress.org, powering 25.4% of all websites in the world and responsible for over 76.5 million sites. It is recommended by 99% of the blogging experts I’ve surveyed.NOTE
To create a WordPress blog, you need to decide on two important things: a domain name and a web hosting provider. If you are a new blogger, you should try using Bluehost, a company that powers over 2 million websites worldwide.
I was able to negotiate a special deal only for my visitors that includes:
Free domain name
60-day money-back guarantee period
Discount price of $2.75 per month
Step #3: Pick a domain name
Your domain name will be the name by which you will be known online, no matter what niche you choose. It’s your unique address on the Internet. Your domain will be yours as long as you continue paying the annual fee ($10 to $15 for a .com domain). Users who know your domain/URL (uniform resource locator) can simply type it into their browser’s address bar. Others will be able to discover you through search engines such as Google and Bing, so you definitely need to find a unique moniker.
Your domain name may be the highly popular “dot com,” or it may be country or niche-specific. The general rule is to go for a “dot com” domain, but some of the other extensions can work. For example, “dot net” or “dot me.”
If you can’t find the domain name you like, Bluehost will let you choose a Free Domain later. That will give you time to do some research and thinking.
Recommended tool:
In the end, it’s about being memorable, so if a different extension or country code helps you be memorable, then break the rules!
Step #4: Get a web hosting account
After choosing a domain name, selecting reliable hosting services will be one of the most important decisions you make. To a great extent, the functionality and performance of your site will depend on your blog hosting. The host makes sure your site is available 24/7 to potential readers and it’s where your files are stored online.
Most hosting companies also offer domain registration services. Some people keep their domain name with the registrar company, separate from the hosting account. I recommend keeping it all under your hosting account for hassle-free management and maintenance.
The wrong web host can cause many problems with your blog. Just imagine choosing a mobile company that has no reception. Your web host is a major piece of the puzzle to creating a successful blog; therefore, you must choose a reliable provider.
Based on our survey, a reliable provider is Blue-host. 99% of blogging experts suggest using it with WordPress.org.
Step #5: Starting a blog on WordPress
This section provides detailed information to help you sign up for the web hosting account and how to set up a WordPress blog. As an example, I will show you how to make a blog with Bluehost, and I included screenshots of the pages that you need to go through.
Watch Blog Set Up Instructions
1. Visit Blue-host
Then click the “Get Started Now” button.
2. Select your blog’s hosting plan
You should start by selecting your plan. If this is your very first one, you should go with the basic one – at least until you explore your options. The one called plus should be able to cover all your needs once you get going, and you should consider the pro version once your popularity skyrockets.
3. Input your blog’s domain name
Your domain name has a say in the success of your blog, so you should take your time to come up with something new. Just type in the desired domain in this “new domain” box and Bluehost will show you whether it’s available or not. If not, it will provide you with a list of similar names for you to choose from.
4. Register for Bluehost
After you pick out your domain name, Bluehost will take you to the registration page where it will be required from you to fill in your personal info, including the billing data. A couple of minutes are all you need.
5. Select your hosting options
Pay additional attention to your hosting options. Obviously, the 12-month package has the lowest price, but the other two are great when you want to make a long term investment.
You can feel free to uncheck the rest of the boxes – you can always get them later when you find them necessary.
6. Launch your WordPress blog with Bluehost
Congratulations, we are almost there! Once you have your domain name and web hosting connected, it’s time to set up WordPress.
Go to your Bluehost cPanel account, find the ‘My Sites’ section and click Install WordPress. That’s the famous one-click set-up offered by Bluehost that makes blog creation a breeze.
Now, if you go to your site’s URL, you will only see a ‘Coming Soon’ page because the site hasn’t gone live yet. For this, you’ll need to set up and design a WordPress site before launching it, but I’ll get to that later. Once this is done, go back to the cPanel and hit ‘Launch.’
Step #6: Find the right them (blog design)
The first thing your blog’s front end needs is a face (design and layout). You want to create an environment that is both eye-catching and practical. In the long run, you want your visitors to easily find information on your site. You don’t want visitors to be discouraged by the colors you choose or the non-intuitive and unpractical way in which information is displayed. Your design can cause instant distrust of your blog or immediate acceptance.
Start your search for a theme as soon as your WordPress platform is installed. The look and feel of your new blog rely on the theme you choose. Your readers will first notice the overall appearance, before even taking a look at the content. Choose a theme that looks great, but also works for your unique content needs. The default theme that comes with your WordPress blog installed is Twenty Nineteen—while it’s a good starter theme, you’ll want to choose a theme that is unique and compatible with your niche. There are more than three thousand themes available on WordPress.org.
A premium WordPress theme has the average price of $40
Among the 10 most popular free themes on WordPress.org, only 3 come from third-party developers (not developed by WordPress.org or Automattic). They are: Swift, Zerif Lite, ColorWay
Here’s a quick checklist for choosing your theme by searching within the blog dashboard:
Read the description. Most themes come with a short description of features and functionality. Reading it can help you figure out if the theme matches your needs.
Check for responsiveness. Aim for a responsive design that will work on desktop browsers and mobile devices. This is recommended by Google.
Check the ratings. Star ratings will be visible in the preview and under theme details to give you a clear idea of how good the theme is.
Preview the theme. Preview the theme (demo) to get an idea of the overall look, layout, and how customizable it is.
If you find a theme that takes your breath away, cool down. Once you install a theme you like, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t look quite right. It is just a skeleton of your blog. To make it appealing, you’ll have to fill in content (text, photos, videos, etc.).
Should you choose a free, premium or a custom theme when setting up a blog
For many visionary novice bloggers, the world is not enough. The stash of free themes does not satisfy their particular desire for the look and feel they are going for. There are two other options you can take a look at, premium and custom themes. But they incur a cost, sometimes a tiny one, at other times a considerable amount.
Premium themes are created by both single developers and dedicated showcase websites. The price range for single-use licenses ranges from $30 to $500, depending on which premium theme you choose.
Custom themes are created by an individual developer (coder and designer, or agency) who will either customize an existing theme or create a brand new theme for you. While coming with clear-cut advantages, they are not the ideal choice for a beginner blogger due to their high cost. Prices to customize a theme, ranging from $500 to $2,000, depending on the features you want.

Blog theme customization
Installing and setting up your new theme is quite exciting; these steps confirm that you made a good choice with WordPress as your blog management system. Remember, your Dashboard is the place where it all happens in the back end, including the option of installing your theme.
Once you login to your account, you are now able to choose one of the default WordPress themes provided by Bluehost. Keep in mind that you can always pick another theme from a WordPress.org repository.
After selecting a theme of your choice, you are now ready to log in to the WordPress dashboard.
Once you login to your WordPress dashboard, you will be prompted with the “Welcome” message and you can choose to accept the help provided by Bluehost for selecting the type of website you are about to create. Or, you can always do it on your own.
If you click on the Bluehost button in the left-hand corner, you will see the page with various tools that are designed to help you create your own blog. Click the “Launch” button and you’ll be seen online within minutes.
After clicking the “Launch” button, you will just need to fill the two most important fields for your site. The title and description, which will tell your future visitors what is your site all about.
Congratulations, you just learned how to create a blog. Your new blog is ready for launch, so get ready to learn how to blog!

Now you should learn what it takes to customize your blog, make the necessary tweaks to make it stand out and please your readers.
Step #7: Write content and promote your blog
So far, you’ve captured a domain name, chosen your blog site and set up the theme, and you are ready to go. Your framework is complete. Now comes the moment of truth. You must learn how to write blog content – in the blogging world, any useful information that you bring to readers can be called “content.” It must be something people will want to interact with and come back to get more, something of value.
The next step is to figure out what content you need to make for your new blog and the best practices you should follow. Whether your blog is to be composed primarily of words, photos, graphics, audio, video, etc. – the content will be the bait that draws your crowd. Few will come just to see your new site.
Without great content, even the most well-designed, tightly-structured blogs will ultimately fail. The framework of the web is code – but the attraction of the web is the content found there.
Three things your content should do
Your content speaks to a specific audience and provides value to them in some significant way. If this sounds suspiciously like our Commandments, you are right. Drill the idea into your mind and never forget it: It’s not about you; it’s about them.
Your content should be easily accessible and attractively presented. Your presentation must equal the quality of your content. Here again, don’t cut corners on low-quality graphics or designs. Everything about your blog must attract your visitors and encourage them to interact with your content.
Your content may be commercially purposed, but should never be commercially focused. Never greet your visitors with pop-up ads and giant banner ads. Greet them with content and reasons to engage with that content. Let them know you are there to help them, not to use them.
As a blog owner, you might get overwhelmed by all the available types of content and methods you can deliver it to your readers. You have to remember that the content delivery method is less important than the actual content and its quality.
Wondering how you can create quality content? It’s simple.
Here are three simple steps approach you can use to make great content of any type:
Point. State your main idea and point you are covering.
Prove. Give an example of the idea you are covering.
Perform. Give a simple way to execute the idea.
There are two blocks you need to worry about, pre-launch and post-launch contents:
Pre-launch content
Before you start writing your day-to-day blog posts, you will want to make sure static pages (such as About us, Contact, etc.) and other parts of your blog (Sidebar, Footer, etc.) are filled with the suitable information. Let’s explore each of these content areas.
About us. The most traditional page on any blog is the About page. This page tells new visitors to your blog what it is all about, who you are and why you run a blog about the particular topic. Depending on your niche and your style, the information you provide can be “all business” or personal and fun.
Contact. This page allows visitors to your blog to communicate with you at any time. It can be a simple page with your email address plus social network links, or you can use a simple contact form that visitors can use to communicate with you without leaving your website.
Sidebar content. Your sidebar is the smaller column to the left or right (depending on the theme you selected) of your blog’s main content. In the sidebar, you could include your blog categories, the most popular posts, ads, etc.
SEO meta tags. You will need to prepare content for the SEO titles and description tags of each page (not seen on the actual page, but you need to have it ready).
Post-launch content
Blog posts. The blog post is an entry (article) that you write on a blog. It can include content in the form of text, photos, infographics, or videos.
Cornerstone content. Cornerstone (or evergreen) content continues to be relevant to its readers and gives them value years after the publish date. It is always fresh and up-to-date. It remains informative and retains its original quality. As its name implies – it is timeless.

Content is not limited to written material but easily overlooked. It is often best to utilize numerous forms of content and give your audience more than one way to obtain knowledge.

To produce quality content, you will have to use your originality and imagination. However, you have to understand that some content performs better than others. But again, you should start creating content that you feel comfortable with, right for your readers, and for your blog.
Start promoting your blog
You’ve learned that the content will be the bait that draws your audience. You can write the most compelling copy the world has ever seen and design a blog interface that would sell people their own shoes
if no one sees the blog, though, all your work is in vain. Marketing and promotion happen every time you engage with your current and future readers. The success of your blog promotion will depend on the ability to engage in your niche.
Let’s look closely at the advanced and straightforward promoting/marketing activities you could be taking to become an authority and successful blogger:
Let your friends know about your blog
Inform everyone you know about your new endeavor. You should include your blog name and URL in your email signature, list it on all your social media profiles, and use every opportunity to get the word out about your new undertaking.
Submit your blog to search engine
It only takes a moment, and it will help to get your blog indexed. To submit your blog URL to Google, sign in to your Google Account and go to the Submit URL option in Webmaster Tools. For extra credit, submit your site to Bing.
Submit your blog to bookmarking sites
Bookmarking sites can offer your content to a lot of potential viewers who are searching for content within your niche. You should do this every time you publish a new blog post to spread the word out. Some popular social bookmarking sites are Scoop.it, Reddit, etc.
Be active in your niche
Get active on relevant blogs, forums, and social pages. Blogger communities are a good way to connect with other bloggers within your niche. You can engage, build friendships and help each other in spreading the content.
Be active on social networks
Your business is unique, and you should make use of the social media avenues that best fit your own niche and style. Choose the one (or ones) that best fit your needs and become an expert at leveraging them to help reach your goals.
Comment on other blogs
Commenting on other relevant blogs is a great way to build relationships with top bloggers within your niche. This will help you make them and their readers aware of your existence as well as developing your personal brand within the topic.
Guest blogging
Take the relationship a step further and offer to write a guest post for other websites. Just be sure your work goes on reputable sites and that the content is directly related to your niche. Guest blogging is an excellent way to build an online presence.
Start building your mailing list
Once your blog gains new fans and readers it’s a good idea to collect the email addresses of those who want to be notified of new articles and offers. As people come to know and trust you, they will respond better to your promotional efforts.
Advertising on the web (paid traffic)
Appropriate and well-informed use of paid media can help you gain exposure and attention before your organic (naturally derived) traffic takes hold. Paid traffic avenues include Google AdWords, and Facebook, to name a few major ones.

Remember that you can always find other ways to promote your new blog. Rely on the blogging fundamentals: a clear and well-functioning blog, focused and helpful information, engaging conversation and practical advice. Your authority will come from helping and giving advice to other people, your fans or readers.
Step #8: How to make money blogging
Monetization is the process of translating your blog activity into earnings. You should keep in mind that blogging isn’t all about making money but instead creating useful content that will attract readers and make them come back for more.
After producing great content for some time and by engaging with your niche market, you will become a recognized expert who will be able to build a significant list of followers and subscribers. Only then you could consider adding content that will generate income.
Blog monetization channels
How to monetize a blog? There are several options from which to choose. You should use the ones that prove most useful to you:
Running ads on your blog
There are seamless possibilities for you to run ads on your blog. Regardless of your niche, you can opt for ads that are specific to what you are writing about or ads that simply better serve your advertiser’s purposes. Google Adsense is one of the most popular choices for ads.
Enrolling in affiliate programs
Affiliate programs are ways of teaming up with retailers to promote their products and benefit from successfully carrying out sales through a commission. Some things that you need to consider when enrolling in affiliate programs:
The number of affiliate sales will strongly rely on the number of visitors you have.
You need to be credible enough for your visitors to click on your links.
You may want to consider placing a notice on your Terms of Use page that you do use affiliate links.
There are a few popular online platforms that offer many affiliate programs you can enroll in Amazon Associates, ShareASale, etc.
Selling your products and services
If you are more on the creative and entrepreneurial side, you may want to consider using your blog as a venue for selling your products and services. Use this advantage especially when your blog gains in readership, authority, and popularity. There are plugins that you can easily integrate into your blog and start selling, such as the WooCommerce plugin. It comes with product pages, cart, checkout, secure payments, etc.
Writing and selling an Ebook
Another great opportunity to make money is to gather existing content from your own blog and offer it as a downloadable ebook. Your ebook can be sold independently if your blog has a commercial platform (such as Bigcommerce), or it could be sold elsewhere. A great publishing opportunity is offered by Amazon and their KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) program.
Sponsored posts
Advertisers are always looking for exposure and are willing to pay you for placing a sponsored post on your blog. Those posts usually promote advertiser products or services and are a good way to earn some additional income for your blog. In the future, if you’re able to build one of the most popular blogs and become an authority in your niche, the advertisers would approach you to publish their posts.
Recommended reading: How to Make Money Blogging
As you can see, there are numerous ways to monetize a blog. Consider the possibilities, and then choose the method or methods that best suit you and your audience. As a minimum, you should – from the very start – begin compiling a mailing list of your readers through subscriptions. Then, when you are ready to recommend products, you will have ready access to those who want to hear what you have to say.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a blog?
Some people still don’t know what is a blog? A blog (in the early stages called “weblog”) is known as many things—a digital magazine, diary, newscast, collector’s meeting place, a showcase for your art, information sharing, teaching hub, a place to learn and
well, almost anything you want it to be. A typical blog combines text, images, videos, and links to relevant pages and media on the Web. Blog readers can leave comments and communicate with the author. In fact, dialogue and interaction are a popular part of a blog’s success.
How to start a blog for free?
People often wonder where to start a blog, but several blogging platforms allow you to create a blog for free. All you have to do is to choose the one you like, register an account and start blogging. For example, you can start a free blog on WordPress.com, Blogger or Tumblr in a matter of a few minutes.
But you need to understand a few things when starting a blog for free:
If you open a BlogSpot account, your free blog name will be in this form: “blogname.blogspot.com” or “blogname.tumblr.com”. In the blogging community, this type of blog is the sign of an inexperienced beginner who likely won’t be taken seriously.
You’ll be subject to rules and restrictions set by the platform. They may limit or prohibit you from using ads, or they may even place their own ads on your blog. If you’re serious about blogging, you’ll want to move away from this option sooner than later.
How to make a blog the right way? I strongly suggest setting up a WordPress blog, and I covered how-to in this blogging guide. If for some reason, the free blog is the only option for you, then create an account on one of the free blog platforms mentioned above and check them out.
What is a niche and how do I choose one for my blog?
If you’re unsure what a niche even is, you’ve come to the right place. In short, a niche is a topic that you write about most often, or even exclusively, in your blogs. Think about the countless of ‘healthy living’ blogs – they give advice on, well, healthy living. They often offer some interesting recipes, share insight into great exercise routines, talk about which foods you should avoid, etc. Leading a healthy lifestyle would be their niche. Brainstorm to find your topic Following is a process that can help you determine which niche is best for you:
Make a list of your interests or hobbies. Which topics fascinate you? List them all, for instance: golf, fishing, yoga, playing games or cooking.
Next, list accomplishments you are proud of, such as musical talent, artistic talent or sports achievements.
Now, list difficulties you have overcome or defeated, such as: losing a significant amount of weight, recovering from a financial setback or managing a disease.
During this exercise, you will get a better feeling for the topics that resonate with you. The ones you are most passionate about are the best candidates for your niche. The reason is that while blogging is an enjoyable process, most people give up after a few months because they lose interest in it. You don’t need to be an expert on the topic that you choose, but it is necessary to want to learn more about it. It’s necessary that you’re excited about it. When you’re disinterested in the topic, the readers will notice and they’ll stop coming to your blog; it’s as simple as that. Narrow it down Once you’ve found your topic of interest, it’s a good idea to narrow it down. If you’re super excited about yoga, for example, choose the type that you’re interested in the most. Is it Hot and Bikram yoga? Kundalini? Something else? If you pick too broad of a topic, it’ll be difficult for you to stand out from the crowd. Speaking of yoga specifically, just by doing a simple Google search of it, you’ll find countless big blogs covering this topic. You’ll only be making it harder for people to find your blog.

What should I blog about?
More often than not, people think they should blog about popular topics where they think money grows on trees. And while the truth is that you might be able to attract the larger audience if you write about smartphones instead of blogging about something specific like tuna fishing, that’s the wrong way to go. In the case, it would show that you write about something you might not completely understand and love, and it would result in an unsuccessful blog that not even you would enjoy.
Instead, you should start writing a blog about something you love and follow. Even if it is a smaller audience, your passion and expertise will attract just the right people. You will be able to connect with them, which will help you to grow and even earn money from it.
Which is the best blog site?
As you might have already realized, there are more than a few blog sites that can easily catch your attention. Although the answer depends on your needs and wishes (where each platform has its good and bad sides, of course), I’m a strong supporter of self-hosted WordPress.
Some may argue the fact that having a self-hosted WordPress site is the best option, but you can’t dispute the fact that it is the most popular blogging platform in the world. WordPress will let you own and control the blog.
How much does it cost to start a blog?
Starting a self-hosted blog is not as expensive as you might have initially thought. If you choose to host your site with Bluehost that I recommend, you can have the environment ready for as low as $2.75 per month!
While usually, a domain would cost you around $15, with Bluehost, you will get one for FREE! The basic package also includes a free SSL certificate (which protects data transfers on your site and makes it safe), 50GB of storage and unlimited bandwidth which means you can have as many visitors as you are able to attract to your site. And this is more than enough to start with.
Do bloggers make money?
You can definitely make money blogging. The amount of money will depend on many factors and it won’t happen overnight but if you put enough effort you could be making extra income or even make a living from your blog.
When you are just starting a blog, don’t get disappointed if blogging won’t buy you a new car in the first few months.
How much money can you make from a blog?
It depends on many factors. Are you just starting out or you already blog for some time and have a group of people who trust you? Is blogging your primary focus or do you manage a blog just in your spare time? And how to make a living blogging?
According to Glassdoor, bloggers in the United States on average earn $30,000 per year. Obviously, some earn a lot less, while there are influencers who have millions of people following them and can earn more than $100,000 per year. Some even say blogging for money gets them more than a million-dollar per year.
Do you want to know how to make a living blogging? If your blog is completely new, you will have to work hard before getting that first paycheck.
Also, passive income needs time to start increasing. Different advertisements and banners will make sense only after you have a well-established blog. While it is possible to get a few bucks per click on a Google ad, you will have to develop your site and build an audience before that becomes a reality. So, when starting out, you can expect only a fraction of a dollar for each click, but do not let that discourage you. Everything has a start, so does your income from a blog.
How do I find a profitable niche for my blog?
So, now you have your topic of interest, you’ve narrowed it down, everything seems to be going great. What now? How do you start making money off of it?
Do a market search
Well, the first thing you should do is check out the competition. A simple Google search for your niche would suffice. You can also check out social media networks, even paper magazines to figure out your competition and see whether you’ll have the audience you want. You can use free SEO tools to get insight into the volume of searches so you can know what you’ll be dealing with. I personally use SEMrush SEO tool for all my research.
If there are too many searches with a lot of competitive sites, you might want to narrow your topic down even more. Explore all the possible keyword ideas that would be of interest to the audience, so that you can find that sweet spot between great demand and low competition.
Check out how profitable your niche is
If you want to make money off your blog, you need to find out whether the niche you’ve chosen is profitable and how much do bloggers make in the same niche. You can once again easily check this with a Google search. When you type in your keywords, are there any ads that pop up as the first result?
When brands or businesses are paying to advertise the products or services related to your niche, you’ll know you’ve picked a good topic, and you’ll be able to monetize your blog with ads.
A better way for monetizing a blog might be through selling affiliate products. Amazon, for example, has a nice affiliate program that allows you to get a 10% commission when your blog sends a buying customer to them. Going back to the yoga niche, you could link to Amazon affiliate products like yoga pants, mats, etc.
Who is your ideal reader?
It’s a common misconception that a specific type of blog post will attract the right person when it’s actually the audience itself that dictates what a blogger should write about. This is why you should always have your ideal reader in mind when creating a profitable blog.
Once you have an idea of who your ideal readers are, you can adjust the language you use in blog posts, the tone of voice, the type of products you’ll market to them, etc.
Knowing the age group of your audience will help you determine their probable spending power, which will, in turn, let you know what types of products to promote. The lower their spending power, the cheaper the products you should market, and vice versa. It will help you determine your style of writing. If your audience is advanced in your niche, you can use topic-specific jargon, if they’re not, you’ll want to keep it simple.
Having a specific reader in mind will help you center your posts towards them, making writing easier, and your new job more enjoyable.
Should I start my blog on WordPress?
WordPress is truly a superior choice when starting your own blog. It’s the most popular CMS in the world for several very compelling reasons. Apart from having complete control over your blog, if you create it on self-hosted WordPress.org, you will experience several more exceptional benefits.
The platform is very intuitive and user-friendly, and it’s very easy to install. You can have your blog up and running with just a few simple clicks.
WordPress comes with plenty of customization features. There are thousands of themes to choose from to make your blog enticing and attention-grabbing, and there are also thousands of plugins for adding more functionality to your blog, including SEO plugins for optimizing your content for search engines.
So, to answer the question: you should definitely start your blog on WordPress, particularly self-hosted WordPress.org. You don’t have to worry about security, updates, or slow-loading pages, as you can quickly create a powerful blog that readers will absolutely love.
What to do if I already have a free blog?
For starters, don’t worry. If you decide to switch to a self-hosted WordPress, you can quickly and painlessly move your free blog to your new host.
Most of the free blog sites allow you to export the content. And WordPress features a ton of tools that will automatically import the content to the new blog. If you are running a Blogger, let me show you how to move it to WordPress, step-by-step.
How do I learn WordPress?
I always love to hear that someone is interested in WordPress or to learn blogging. That’s because I have been working hard to gather the knowledge and experience I had been collecting for many years in the business.
I have dedicated an entire section of our site to learn WordPress where you can level up your WordPress skills and understand the best practices.
The section will guide you from the very beginnings of your WordPress site to advanced techniques that will teach you how to develop a unique site that both you and your visitors will love.
How bloggers get paid?
There are two main categories we can talk about when it comes to getting paid as a blogger. One is passive income while the other requires you to engage in some actions.
Passive income is an always popular option since it allows you to earn money even while you sleep. While the concept is very tempting, you should understand that it isn’t entirely true. While you are able to get paid all the time, you still have to work hard on the advertisements and different systems if you want to get the best out it (earn as much as possible). This usually includes:
Displaying Google ads or other advertising platforms/networks
Affiliate links (you get a percentage for sale that comes from your site)
Adding textual advertisements & links
The active income may bring you more cash, but it needs more involvement. You can earn money by:
Having Course Sales, Training, and Coaching
Writing & publishing sponsored posts and listings
Selling products directly
Writing ebooks
Podcast sponsorships
These are just some popular ways of earning money while blogging. Learn more about it through my beginner’s guide with tips from 33 experts.
What to do if your domain name is taken?
Unfortunately, gazillions of awesome domain names have been already taken; especially if you aim for the most popular .com domain. But don’t worry; if you can’t get the domain you want while registering for a hosting account, Bluehost will help you by letting you choose one later. Just by clicking the button, you can skip the registration of the domain. That will give you time to do some research and thinking. Try thinking about other options or maybe another extension like .net or any other that may be a good fit for your blog.
I have put together a guide to help you come up with a great domain name, so take your time and consider all the factors before registering a domain.
How do I switch from HTTP to HTTPS on Bluehost?
Recently, Google started to penalize sites that aren’t secured. News about unsecured sites started to spread like wildfire, and everyone wanted to get their site on the safe list. And so should you; having a secure website have more than a few benefits:
People will be more likely to stay on your site
If you sell something or ask visitors for email addresses or different personal information, they will know the information will remain visible only to you
Google will not penalize your site by showing an alert that your blog is not safe
To make your blog safe, all you need to do is turn on the SSL certificate. It controls the data transfer on your site and makes it unreadable to nosy people who might sniff the data from an outside. But before you start worrying that only tech savvy-experts know how to do this, let me show you how you can get a FREE secure connection in just a few steps:
Login to your Bluehost account (Use the login information you received via email after creating an account)
If not already selected, choose “hosting login” tab
Click on “My Sites” from the menu
Hover over the thumbnail that represents your site
Click the “Manage Site” option that will show up over the thumbnail
Select the “Security” tab at the top
Turn on the “Free SSL Certificate” by clicking the switch to “On”
After toggling the switch, you should wait up to one hour before the changes become visible on your site.
To quickly identify if the SSL certificate was successfully installed for your domain, check for the icons next to the URL of your site.
If using Chrome, you should see a little green lock followed by the word “secure” or the name of the site. This will indicate that the certificate has been successfully installed and that your blog follows the rules. Congratulations!
If not, Chrome will show a little information icon (a circled letter “i”). If you click on the icon, it will tell you that the site is not secure, and warn you about leaving sensitive information on that site. Now you can imagine how terrible that looks like when Google recommends not leaving any information on a site.
Please note that you can turn on the certificate only after your domain registration is fully completed. To make sure it will work; wait at least 24 hours before turning on the certificate.
Conclusion
Congratulations! Now you’ve learned how to start a blog. You have your own domain name, hosting space and your blog is set up. Next, you will need to get familiar with the WordPress dashboard, make desired changes, start content creation and promotion to become a successful blogger. Check out all my Resources and learn how to blog.
