(Sometimes! Also, depending on the vibe of the story, it does, lol. I write a lot of fluff, and my overall writing style has a lot of heart to it, so I tend to listen to a lot of upbeat and cute songs when writing / thinking about writing.)

(Something is done when I come up with a conclusion for it that feels right to me. Basically, when I say so, lol.)

“I don't see the point in putting so much effort in a braid, of all things.”

Gwen chuckled at his words, continuing to focus on his long auburn locks, an unmatched precision used just so she could braid his hair.

“But you always wear a braid,” Gwen commented.

Roya shrugged. “Fair,” he breathed, his words always coming out soft.

He laid his head down on her lap, his eyes fluttering shut to focus on his surroundings.

The feeling of grass tickling his skin, the chirping of birds, the sound of flowing water from a nearby river…

The way Gwen held him so gently.

Roya smiled to himself. To him, this much affection felt almost alien, with the way he was raised.

But Gwen…. She taught him it could be normal. That it could be okay to want for things. And in turn, he taught her something too.

That it was okay to want for things and be selfish about it. That she didn't have to always assist others.

Roya knew the costs of something like that.

And he didn't want Gwen to suffer the fate he got for helping others too much.

Helping others is good. Roya thought, extending his hand for a butterfly to land on it, upon his eyes finally fluttering open. But sometimes it isn't worth it.

His eyes wandered, looking toward Gwen as she read her book, shortly after finishing braiding his hair.

Roya didn't even know she finished braiding it.

Taking his hair in his hands, he gently fingered said braid, a slight look of fondness in his eyes.

Gwen noticed and smiled softly (though that isn't to say she wasn't smiling before). “Do you like it?”

His eyes met hers, and he gave her a content nod. “Yes, and I shall thank you for putting in the effort to do so,” Gwen couldn't tell if the corners of his lips were curving upwards, but it certainly looked like it.

“It isn't all that hard,” she shook her head. “I like to believe that everyone is capable of braiding hair like me.”

But no one could ever truly be like you, Gwen.

Roya thought, a slight pink dusting his cheeks. Gwen was special to him. She gave him the love he didn't know he needed, the affection he was deprived of for so long.

Her very presence alone, body and sound, made him wish to devote himself to her, truly. With every fiber of his being, that was all he asked.

He wanted to love Gwen, be worthy of her, and love her just as much as she loved him.

Roya sat up, looking over her shoulder to see what she was reading. “Interesting,” he muttered, eyes squinting to read paragraph after paragraph.

“I don't think it's all that much,” Gwen chuckled, shrugging her shoulders. “It just happens to be a book I borrowed from Tinsley.”

“Tinsley,” that name rang a familiar bell in Roya's head. “Your sister, yes?”

Gwen nodded eagerly, before realizing that his wording implied that he forgot about Tinsley for a moment.

She narrowed his eyes at him, a knowing smile. Before she could even send him an almost teasing remark, Roya angled her head up and stole a kiss.

One that she, happily, obliged to.

He pulls away, his breath against her parted lips. “Is that enough to shut you up?” he questioned her, his voice ever gentle.

That got a giggle out of her, and it was enough for Gwen to muster up the motivation to just- Kiss his forehead.

“Perhaps, my prince. Perhaps.”

Roya leaned his back against a nearby tree, reading the book Gwen had read moments earlier, his interest piqued with each turn of a page.

“Are you enjoying it so far?” Now, their roles seemingly switched. Now, Roya was reading, and Gwen laid her head down on his lap.

He looked down, smiling. “Yes. It seems your sister has an eye for literature.”

“She has an eye for a lot of things, frankly,” Gwen closed her eyes briefly, her smile unfading. “I sometimes wonder when she'll ever give herself a break, once in a while.”

“It'll happen eventually,” his free hand made its way to the top of her head, gently petting her as he continued reading.

“I worry for her, a lot.”

“And that makes you a good sister to her, Gwen. The best, even.”

“W-Well, I wouldn't say the best-”

He shut her up with another kiss, this time one that was placed directly over her nose.

“You,” he murmured. “Are beautiful, an encapsulation of all things wonderful, and are the reason I live and breathe.”

He smiled.

“You are deserving of the title of being ‘the best’, my love. For you are someone all people will come to adore, as time passes.”

He knew, because he was one of those people.

A comfortable silence washed over the two of them. There was the occasional remark about certain parts of the book on Roya's part, with Gwen giggling and telling him, “It gets better/worse from there” — but other than that, silence was dominant over both of them.

Gwen's hands laid over each other atop her stomach, eyes finally allowing themselves to close.

Noticing this, Roya's smile made another unexpected appearance and obliged the young prince to allow him to lay his hand over Gwen's.

An assurance that he was there. That he'd keep her safe, even as she drifts to the land of dreams.

Finishing the book, Roya hummed, quite satisfied with the resolution of it all.

It wasn't until he looked down that he realized that Gwen had well — and truly — gone to sleep.

He chuckled, setting the book down, using his now-free hand to gently play with her hair as she lay fast asleep against him.

His eyes wandered, examining every little feature of Gwen's face. From the way it shined against the light, the hints of pink dusting itself on her cheeks — whether by makeup or not —, and the softness of the smile that came upon her lips.

The blush on his face became all the more prominent, but he didn't fight it. He embraced it. Just like how he embraced Gwen now.

Adjusting his position slightly, he wrapped his arms around her, bringing her head to his chest and carefully combing through her hair as she slept.

All with a smile on his face.

Alas, it was getting late. And as much as Roya wanted to stay with his beautiful Gwen for just a little longer — he knew that he had to assist in her return to NRC.

Readjusting himself again, he picked her up in his arms. And surprisingly, Gwen leaned into his touch, her head nuzzling itself against his chest almost instinctively.

Soon, their horses had arrived. They weren't that far from them, of course, but still. They arrived, ready to take the couple back to their respective magic schools.

Roya's horse in particular — named Midnight Barbara, of all things — sent him a knowing look. He didn't even know horses could even be that expressive.

Nonetheless, he returned her look with a look of his own. One with narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and a blush so visible you could almost say he was getting redder than his own hair.

“Don't speak of this. At all.”

It wasn't like Roya expected Midnight Barbara to just…. Learn the ability to speak. But he knows her gossiping ways, always making jokes about his lovestruck nature to her fellow mares and stallions.

(That's what he often believed, at least.)

Placing Gwen over her own horse — Snowdrop — it didn't take him all that long to get on his.

He ensured that Snowdrop wouldn't go out of control, naturally. He didn't want any harm to come to Gwen, especially from her beloved horse, of all circumstances.

He looked down at her sleeping form one more time, smiling ever softly.

Things like this, the love he held for Gwen, and the way he cherished her with almost every fiber of his being.

Things like that, and even the simplest things in his life…

….. He treasured it with all his heart.

Then there's Junoru's father. I love his emotional response when the kids ask if they can have a brother. He's cute. I wonder if I'll ever see him again. I'm glad Junoru has inherited most of his father's beauty. And why is he and juju's mother one in heaven and the other in hell? Is it because father did something worse?

Finally, how did Blace and Jace become who they are? What's the story of their scars? Perhaps you will add their details in the dlc?

You will see Junoru's father in Roya's route again. The story is from Roya's perspective on his family.

So why did Hanaru end up in heaven and Dezem in hell? Spoiler: Jace was ordered to kill the mother, so she got sent to heaven. Blace could only send people to hell and was ordered to kill Dezem. He didn't do anything worse.

The story of Blace and Jace are explored in Roya's route if you choose certain menu choices. In the DLC, I add everything that wasn't explored in the main game. Hopefully, this answers your curiosities.

Oh gosh, I wake up and the front door’s covered in packages… I can’t believe all three of you sent something along! Tackling these one-by-one.

Amperage: Cross loves the crane, firstly! Even if she keeps eyeing the… I think the package said an exosuit…? Wyrdo and Roya sent on the side. Not sure what inspired you on the guitar, but I’m tempted to try it out so long as my claws don’t snip the strings! Not very musically inclined, but… I don’t know, might be nice to have an excuse to just belt songs out! Besides, kind of romantic. Again, thank you so much! v interested to hear more of your thoughts on martyr... i read it abt a year ago now and while i did ultimately give it a 4/5 i was honestly expecting it to be an easy 5 stars so its safe to say it didnt exactly meet my expectations!!

i think my biggest gripe w it was the sort of reveal at the end?? trying to be vague to avoid being too spoiler-y but the whole sequence of events that played out w orkideh didnt necessarily feel impossible, but did require a bit more suspension of disbelief from me than i thought i would have to do going into the book. i think the best way i could describe my feelings on the ending is that it felt a little too neatly wrapped up to be real life. maybe thats just my haterism talking tho idk!!

definitely there were bits of the book i did enjoy which were as follows

on a sentence level i thought i was really well written!! iirc akbar's background is poetry which really showed in his language there were some truly gorgeous lines in there and i do generally enjoy purple prose/flowery language, although it started to grate a little towards the end (im thinking specifically of the final cyrus and zee scene) but that may have been my tolerance for the book in general waning. i did for the most part really like his writing style though so its one of those where i would definitely read another book by akbar even though i was disappointed with martyr!

it was very. readable? which i know sounds like im damning it with faint praise and that it a compliment i tend to give out even to books that have no other redeeming features but i was generally compelled by the story and for someone who's been in a massive reading slump it had me reading like 300 pages yesterday! i was interested in the story i wanted to see where it went! which makes where it went even more of a shame for me lol

as for my gripes starting with the one you mentioned because honestly i was sort of teetering already but that did push me over the edge

the plot twist was SO disappointing. i think you put it perfectly in that it required me to suspend my disbelief far more than i was expecting to and honestly this (semi-ridiculous?? to be honest??) plot twist of his mother running off to become this pretentious artist (and also a really annoying person?? i simply did not like her??) was absolutely nowhere near as interesting to me as the plot before the twist of two opposite iranian women, where as cyrus said one's death 'mattered' and the other's was totally meaningless. i found that so interesting as i did the entire exploration of martyrdom and meaning in death which was promised through the entire book and then not even half delivered on. like genuinely a bit staggered that for all the talking (so much talking) that we got on it, the books final commentary on those themes was so weak as to be non existent. i almost felt like akbar couldnt quite pull off the 'opposite iranian women' message at the end and his solution was this contrived twist idk...it felt incredibly juvenile to be honest?

i did not really like the structure of the book. the multiple povs arent something im against per se but interspersed with those dream dialogues which honestly i feel shouldve been cut (its a cool concept at first but purely on a reader level by the end when im turning the page to see a made up conversation between his dad and a poet im sighing because i simply dont want to read another one) as well as each other, i felt i ended up not spending enough time with any of them to gaf. i was most interested in cyrus' story anyway but i think for the books length (331 pages!) there was far too much and thus far too little going on--even if the uncle and dad's and zee's perspectives were cut to leave just cyrus and roya i feel like that wouldve allowed for much more room to develop those characters and narratives.

leading on from that it might be a symptom of not getting to spend enough time with him but god i hated cyrus. which isnt a criticism i like making because theres always somebody ready to say 'ummmm but youre meant to!! point emoji nerd emoji unlikeable characters blah blah' which i agree with and have loved books where ive disliked the main character but the cardinal sin of any mc is not to be unlikeable, but to be annoying. cyrus was annoying in a way i couldnt forgive because he didnt grow from it, like at all, ever (again, he didnt really have much time to given the structure of the book). he was whiny and self-obsessed and he wasnt a character interesting enough for me as a reader to have to put up with that self-obsession. nothing he had to say was that interesting. all of his conversations were like. people just dont talk like that. even pretentious college grads do not talk like that. the line where zee is like i just dont want you to be blindsided...or, er, some non-ableist synonym for blindsided...i had to put the book down for a second i dont care if it was a part of his character as a leftist online young american millennial or whatever it wasnt delivered with enough irony for me not to cringe. maybe ive spent too much time on tumblr. i thought the dialogue was easily the weakest part of the book to be honest, and that was no more apparent than when cyrus was talking to anyone. the rushed + contrived romance at the end after hes gone through zero character growth...well i didnt care. i didnt like the guy. i wont be invited to the wedding, whatever.

those are my main thoughts!! and honestly they make me sound like i disliked the book more than i did, i gave it a 3.5 but i think against such hype it fell severely short for me so rather than taking away what i did like from it i was left thinking about all the ways it disappointed me given what id heard about it. i would love to hear what you or anyone else thinks of any of this whether you agree with me or not!!

As for the staff... teal and black, lightweight but durable metal, poison splotch patterns. About the same size as the old one. If you can, something like a... Poison Jab? feature. Does that make sense?

Umm.. I'm like a really big fan of Dark Nights and it was my first otome game. And honestly Roya absolutely won my heart...

So I just wanted to ask whether you'd ever think of writing a storyline for him incase the target for donations isn't met?

Rn Chain is leading the polls by a huge majority and I don't think Roya will be able to get enough votes for him. That's not to say that I don't like Chain tho...

Thank you for this lovely message. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the game this much. The project campaign is my final decision in the course of this project. However, I do plan to write & draw all concepts I have in mind for Roya if his storyline is not funded. The content is less than a full route, but I'm sure it will fill your curiosity about his character. It was such a joy writing about the Kenriji family so I'll surely touch on it again.

Chain still holds a lot of mysteries so I understand that a lot people vote for him. Regardless of the outcome, it'll be my pleasure to work on the new route.

hi ive been seeing you post about cape kids a lot, and i was wondering what that was? ocs? fandom? you're art is awesome by the way!

you have no idea how excited this ask makes me because as you have deduced i have been thinking about them NONSTOP. CAPE is a ttrpg campaign im in with some friends! The premise is that there’s this organization called CAPE (the original acronym has been lost to time), which is like the police for metahumans (people with superpowers), and they have a trainee program which our PC’s are all a part of (for varying reasons). Said PC’s are:

- Leo Luo: MY LITTLE GUY! She’s part of CAPE because she committed arson, almost died, and had the option to go to court or be on CAPE probation. She has a heightened body temperature, which gives her heat resistance, and she’s also the most repressed lesbian ever and a major STEM kid

- Markus Kane: this man is 6’9, anxious as hell and studies magic! He has a magic snake familiar (named Linguine), and is the only person on our team to like, fully voluntarily join CAPE (though he regrets it). Notably from Kentucky, and the only American PC, since the campaign is set in Ireland. Leo’s bestie because he said so.

- Kyra Kim: She’s a healer! Kyra is an aspiring journalist, and was put on CAPE probation after she got caught using her powers to save Leo from the aforementioned burning building where Leo almost died (they hate each other intensely in an enemies to lovers kinda way). they also do taekwondo!

- Noemi Santolin: twitch streamer and girl gamer 💖 she’s able to manipulate light, which she uses for social media reasons, however, she got caught by her parents using said powers and had the option to join CAPE willingly or be turned in and put on probation, so even though they aren’t probationary, they still aren’t there entirely by choice

- Roya Stallard: previously did vigilante work with Karma, her old mentor, but got put on CAPE probation when she was caught. They can breathe underwater, but prefer hand to hand combat, and is one of the two members of our team who could actually survive a fight

There’s also a whole bunch of NPC’s who range from mentors to friends to more enemies than the average teen should have. We usually do little CAPE missions, try to puzzle out lore, and generally are menaces both in and out of character (they’re all between the ages of 16-18 so there IS teen drama. leo and kyra did pvp one time) and it’s basically very fun and these teens have been bouncing around my head like a windows screensaver for weeks now. I’m planning to post more art of them at some point, since it’s basically all i’m drawing aside from finishing egwene animatic 2, but there is markus fic out there if you’re interested. Thank you sm for asking and letting me ramble about these guys though! this is obviously a very simplified version of like…everything (going into full detail would take too much time, and i would feel weird just deep diving into the entire comprehensive lore on my public tumblr without like…permission), but hopefully it’s still been an informative post about the teens who i have been posting about incessantly :]
