so i wanna talk about a dream i had.

i had this dream a couple days ago. in this dream i was with people i didn't know. sometimes this happens but my brain also sometimes puts people i do know randomly into my dreams. when it's people i do know they also are sometimes in situations i don't want to experience them being in. like in my dream i might be involved with someone i hate in real life romantically. this wasn't the case for this dream. i didn't know these people but the one i was most involved with had a distinct face.

in this dream i was having sensory overload in a loud and crowded area. i was covering my ears and whining and squeezing my eyes shut really tight. it might have been on its way to a meltdown.

while this was happening the person i was most involved with during the dream noticed and guided me away off the path of moving people to an area i could sit down. i sat down there for a while still covering my ears. there was also a jar full of things there? and i dumped it out and started sorting for things in it which upset another person but the person i was with basically defended me i think.

the thing about this dream that is strange is i went nonverbal. now this is strange because i have never been nonverbal, if anything i'm hyperverbal. i think i was given cards at one point to indicate what i want. then at another point i had a notebook and was writing in it to communicate and that ended up being my preferred method.

the dream then shifted to me being in what i think was some form of a dorm with the person i was with and he went to wash up and then we went to bed and cuddle in a weird way. like i was down by his legs and in a hammock for some reason? but this also confirmed that i had an intimate relationship of some kind with this person. then the dream ended.

the reason i'm talking about this dream is because i'm confused by what it means. during and after the dream i realized i enjoyed being nonverbal? like it was a comfortable feeling. again i've never been nonverbal and i view myself as hyperverbal. so this is what i don't understand. i'm confused as to what this could mean?

i was hoping if any other autistic people could help me figure this out. if anyone else has experiences with dreams like this? because i honestly want to explore what this dream means.

another person has self-immolated in protest of the ongoing genocide happening in Palestine. his name is Matt Nelson, he self-immolated in front of the Israeli consulate in Boston, he is the 5th known person to have done this. Before he did this, he stated his intentions and reasoning in a Youtube video which has been reposted across several platforms and the condensed transcription is as following:

“My name is Matt Nelson and I'm about to engage in an extreme act of protest. We are all culpable in the ongoing genocide in Gaza […] We are slaves to capitalism and the military industrial complex. seeing a lot of videos that are like “I didn’t know babies couldn’t have water” so here’s an incomplete list of things you need to know before having a baby

- the obvious, they can’t have water bc milk is incredibly high in water already so excess water leads to over hydration

- babies cannot have honey until 1

- if ur breastfeeding your kid and saving excess milk, make sure you label what you pumped in the morning vs at night bc your body produces different melatonin levels throughout the day and giving your baby daytime milk at night can make them more alert and fuck up their sleep schedule

- idk why ppl keep saying this but swaddling your babies or getting them those baby straight jacket things is not abuse. It chills them out cuz it reminds them of the womb

- babies have a dandruff like buildup on their head called cradle cap, and it’s very easy to deal with and remove with just some baby shampoo, a gentle scrub brush (MADE FOR BABIES!!) and a comb. It does need to be removed tho cuz it can be very painful after a while. This can also continue to happen late into toddlerhood it’s normal

- you have to clean out the creases of your baby’s skin and hands and feet they WILL collect dust😭😭

- you cannot bathe your baby until their umbilical cord naturally falls off. Use a warm damp rag until then

- tummy time is actually very important

- your baby might have a misshapen head at first (not all the time but sometimes) this will either sort itself out or they’ll need a corrective helmet ask your doctor

- I wouldn’t recommend having your baby leave the house very much until they’re at least 6 months old, especially if they’re born near cold and flu season cuz the common cold can kill a newborn

- you’re not an awful horrible person for having postpartum depression and it’s always a million times better to let your baby cry a few minutes longer than normal while you regain your composure than to freak out and give ur kid shaken baby syndrome

- you’re not an awful horrible person for giving your baby formula milk either

- don’t put shoes on your baby it’ll compromise their toe box and balance

- babies put every single thing in their mouths

- the easiest way to burp a baby is to hold them straight up (spine straight) and hold their head a bit higher

- always support their head they barely have necks

- if your baby fights away food, fights tummy time, vomits every single time you burp them, is gaining or losing an unreasonable amount of weight at a time, wheezes after eating, or goes red after eating, chances are they’re probably allergic to the type of milk they’re eating (again ask a doctor but these are just some signs it’s not just colic)

- they will wobble a lot when learning to do things but you gotta fight the urge to help them every single time cuz they gotta learn

- they’re not always spitting out baby food cuz they don’t like it they just don’t know how to eat. Like they don’t know how to push food down they only know how to stick their tongue out so be patient

- babies craniums are broken up into three parts at first that later fuse together, this is to help make birthing easier but it results in a small EXTREMELY sensitive spot in the top of their head that has no protection. This puts their brain at a high risk. Always protect their soft spot

- read to your baby!! Get cute bright colorful sensory books with sight words and read them to your baby it makes such a huge difference in their educational growth and will help them acquire a love for reading early on. And talk to them never shut up just say whatever comes to mind all the time this will strengthen their vocabulary growth also.

- babies poop like a lot. A lot. an unreasonable amount. Bring back up clothes and more diapers than you think

- no pillows or stuffies in the crib and only use a muslin blanket unless it’s especially cold to prevent suffocation

- babies kick reflexively until they’re out of their newborn scrunch (they stay womb shaped for a while) and if your baby is crying and pushing at the swaddle try letting them flail around for a minute

- consoling your baby is not spoiling them ! They need comfort and they will learn to self soothe on their own

- singing lullabies actually works, they can recognize your voice a consistent place of comfort from the womb and the cadence of lullabies is literally engineered to create a calm headspace

- for the love of god do not get boring ass beige toys. Colors are important for their neurological development

- babies are very responsive to praise from a young age so be as supportive of them as you can

- babies get constipated a lot and you have to do like tummy massages to help ease their pain the easiest way is to lay them on their backs and hold one foot in each hand, kick their feet like bicycles, scrunch up, and then stretch their legs out

- holding them on your hip too much will not cause bow legged-ness if your baby is bow legged that was always gonna happen

- they drool so so much and you have to get bibs for them so they don’t get chest eczema

- don’t use scented products on their skin cuz their skin is sooo much thinner than ours

- when your baby first starts sitting on their own never walk away from them without setting up a nest of pillows and blankets around them. Even minor head trauma can mess them up sometimes

- this one is kinda morbid and scary but sometimes babies just die out of nowhere and it’s no one’s fault or anything it’s called sudden infantile death syndrome(SIDS) and it’s about 1.3k deaths on average per year in America so not super common but still very real. 90% of these deaths happen during the first four months however edit: apparently it’s bc of an enzyme deficiency which at the very least you can take steps to try and prevent

- smoking and drinking during pregnancy WILL affect your baby and your breast milk and also might contribute to SIDS cases

- babies sometimes have a big red mark on them somewhere called a stork bite immediately after birth but typically it goes away

- babies can’t see very well for a while after birth and they’re VERY wobbly so they’ll typically bonk their head into your chest and face a lot while trying to support themselves

- female babies might have smth similar to a period the first few days after birth, this is because of the hormone transfer that happens during the birthing process and the days leading up to it

- male babies get random erections for the first few days after birth(hormone transfer again) literally do not be weird about this it’s a baby

- things like weaning your baby onto solid foods, potty training, weaning off pacifiers etc, can actually be directed by the baby and will happen naturally will minimal guidance from the parent(some guidance is still necessary) although I would do individual research into baby led weaning for food to prevent choking

- get those chewy feeding pouches to help with weaning

- the most random things will scare the hell out of your baby don’t take it personal 😭

- baby carriers are life savers (tulas are one of my favorites)

- once babies hit toddlerhood they’re tougher than you think, and a lot of their reaction is based on YOURS. they’re always going to be looking to you for how to react to a situation. Remain calm and if they’re ok they’ll calm down but if they’re genuinely hurt they’ll keep crying

- babies will most likely get ridiculously attached to an inanimate object and you have to keep this thing intact at all costs until they’re old enough to abandon it or they will throw a FIT. I got a lemur plushie from a zoo once and every single one of the kids has bonded their soul with it until about 6 years old and once a month I have to stitch him back up

- don’t compare yourself to other parents. Maybe your kid isnt getting grass fed wild caught north Atlantic cheerios but at least they’re fed. If your kid is alive and healthy and happy you’re doing a good job

- you will need 3 car seats, an infant seat, a grow with me toddler seat, and a booster seat

- getting a good diaper bag is a MUST

- the hair a baby is born with will most likely all fall out or they’ll get a bald spot on the back of their head where they sleep cuz their hair is so fragile and thin but once it grows back it grows back thick

- get like 20 muslin blankets so you always have a backup when the main ones are covered in spit up

- the babies grip IS stronger than yours (keep your hair up and keep pets away best you can)

- your best bet for your teething baby is a pacifier you can put your finger in so you can massage their gums and some chewing toys numbing cream can be dangerous and should be used sparingly

- go ahead and come to terms with the fact you’re gonna have to use a Frida Baby to manually remove snot

- babies can get hair and thread wrapped around their toes and fingers that can cut off their circulation try to make a habit of checking

- don’t hit your kid please it’s nothing but trauma and fucked up coping mechanisms from there pls empathize with your child they’re a person too

- be careful not to pull too hard on their arms and legs(like during play or holding their hand while they walk) and NEVER pick them up by their hands this will very easily cause dislocation

- they might have a little tooth like callous on their lip from their pacifier. This does not hurt them and it will go away but it may hurt during breastfeeding

- breastfeeding will make your boobs different sizes

I FINALLY finished the backlog of Frankenstein Weekly last night at 1am (deadass), which means now it's time to start on the massive backlog of Dracula Daily in my inbox. But I also have some Thoughts:

ELIZABETH. ELIZABETH MY BABY. I thought she didn't want to be married to Victor before this reread and I'm absolutely sure she didn't want to marry Victor now. She tries to comfort Victor on the ride to the honeymoon cottage not by saying stuff like 'hey, we're married now! Celebrate!' but 'look at all of the beautiful things out in nature! Look at the lake and the plants and the animals!' And although I say she tries to comfort Victor, I think she's actually trying to comfort herself--her personal worst case scenario has come true, and she's trying to comfort herself in this terrible moment where she's now married and truly bound to someone who she doesn't love and who doesn't love her as a person, just an object, by looking outside and comforting herself in the fact that nature is still beautiful and that the world still goes on despite her misfortune---ironically enough a massive contrast to how Victor wallows in his own despair without even trying to see the good that still exists in the world outside of his little circle.

In the very last chapter, when the Creature shows up and talks to Walton, he kind of mirrors some of Victor's earlier language, and insists that he's had the worst time of it ever of anyone, that he's had the most pain, in a similar way to Victor insisting that he's the one who's suffered the most in human history ever. Some of the self-centeredness of the father being passed down to the son here? Wallowing in his own despair and pain the same way that Victor did? We all love the Creature in this fandom, I'm sure, he's a sweetheart who didn't deserve anything that happened to him, but that doesn't mean that he's automatically a saint.

Soooo, Victor built the first Creature...and the first Creature is implied to be able to reproduce by Victor, soooo...like...what was he thinking? Did Victor really give the Creature sex organs? Would he actually be fertile? Whose sperm is it?? [Similar questions arise with the uncompleted second Creature.] <- This is less about the characters or themes of the book and more about hypothetical worldbuilding/science-y questions, but apparently brain death doesn't exist in the universe of Frankenstein (because Mary Shelley didn't know about it) so like...possibly these are not super fruitful questions

You could write an essay--or a series of essays--or maybe even a book on how Mary Shelley uses beauty and ugliness in her work, and what that might reveal about her own prejudices. Especially with the Creature's looks being what 'inspires' people to drive him away/be so scared of him, and I think I remember Victor saying something about how the Creature was beautiful to him before it was truly animated. And Elizabeth's beauty, and the beauty of the natural scenes...

There's also the question of the Creature's humanity. He was made from human parts, by a human, in the shape of a human; he can speak like a human; he thinks like a human; and yet he has been cast out from human society and, at least in his own mind, is hated by any human who even looks at him. Does he count as human? Is it fair to call him a monster or a Creature? Is it accurate? If he's not human, what is he? If he is human, what makes him human? Might you call him a zombie? What about something similar to a cyborg, or an android? These questions are especially pertinent to someone like me: very very queer, definitely neurodivergent, and with little attachment to my own humanity (and a mild obsession with monsters of all kinds). If the Creature is human, does that mean that I am human? If the Creature fails to be human, do I fail to be human?

Ironically enough, it seems like in the same end scene I mentioned in 2, Walton--although refusing to look at the Creature for its (informed?) hideousness--doesn't reject the Creature for its looks, but for its crimes as reported by Victor and confessed to by the Creature itself. In some ways, this is a just rejection; do not murderers and monsters deserve to be punished for their actions? And yet we cannot forget how the Creature was neglected by Victor and how he was rejected unjustly by strangers time and time again. What is justice here? What would be just? How do we recompense a victim who is also a perpetrator? How do we help someone who is hurting after they've hurt others?

I've got a oneshot idea percolating in my brain, a canon divergence thing that's set during the time where Victor is outside the cottage and Elizabeth is waiting inside, and when the Creature comes in she originally mistakes him for Victor (not looking at him) and they end up talking. There's also a part with her giving him her veil, so that his features are less defined (making him less likely to be automatically rejected based on his looks) near the end, and while what happens after is going to be left ambiguous--it's not the focus of that (currently unwritten) piece--I like to think it's happy. I'm also hoping to at least write up an outline for that oneshot today, if not the whole thing, because I'm Like That as a writer.

What the actual fuck!? What is wrong with some people!? Fanfic writers don’t owe you anything! Not their work, not their time, not their energy! As someone who loves reading fanfic, I get that it can be frustrating having to wait for updates on a fic you’re excited about but you have to realise that fanfic writers are real people with their own lives and struggles. Writing fanfic can be fun and all but it’s also a lot of work. As someone who’s written (but rarely had the courage to post) fanfic, it takes a lot of time, effort and energy to plan and write a fic. The only payoff fic writers get is the engagement of their readers and even that has become less and less within the community. Fanfic writers deserve our understanding and respect, especially when they’re going through difficult times. We do not get to demand anything of them at any point, when they devote themselves, their time and their labour to creating something for us to enjoy without financial reward for their efforts. This kind of message is wholly unacceptable. You shouldn’t say this to someone who works a paid job, let alone someone who puts themselves and their work out there for free. It’s not an easy thing to put something you’ve created, something that’s close to your heart, out there for others to judge. It can actually be terrifying and fic writers do it without any form of financial compensation or the guarantee that people will see and like their work. They open themselves up to judgement and hate and awful comments like this. All for the chance of sharing their love of fandom and their creative additions to it with other fans. Fanfic writers don’t have to write fanfic, they don’t have to share it with the fandom, they choose to and they could just as easily choose not to. As such, they deserve the fandom’s support, respect, understanding and love.

OP I am so sorry for your loss, and I’m sorry you had to receive such an awful message whilst grieving the loss of your mother. It is wholly unfair for anyone to expect anything from you at this time. No reasonable person would expect you to devote any time or energy to writing fanfic when you need it to process this loss. Take all the time you need; and honestly I wouldn’t blame you for not coming back to fanfic writing at all after this utter disrespect.

If there is one thing I learned from being a fanfic writer, it’s that a nice chunk of your readers genuinely do not give a single shit about you unless you are posting one-shots/drabbles/chapter updates.

I lost my MOTHER, aka the woman who gave me life, my literal everything, and some of y’all genuinely expect me to … what? Shrug it off? And … write fucking fanfiction? For what? For 65% to just leave a fucking like, and nothing else?

My sincerest apologies for not posting smut drabbles, I guess. It’s hard to find the motivation to write fanfics when you’re trying not to follow your mom into the afterlife.

I don’t know who this anon is (truthfully I don’t wish know), but thank you — you’ve sealed the nail in the coffin. I’m not returning to this fandom again. Feel free to imagine whatever the fuck happens to handmaid. I don’t care anymore. Be thankful I don’t delete all my shit and leave this site.

A good new year resolution might be learning some decorum. Or empathy. Some of y’all need it.
