The wassibi, threatening you with a very bad time.
Wassibi are mid-sized (11-16 lb) solitary mustelids. This species is native throughout the lands south of the Viper seaway, thriving as generalists in a great diversity of habitats (though rarely occur in very arid environments or at high elevations). They are omnivores, using their broad noses and strong claws to dig out earthworms, beetle larvae, roots and tubers, foraging along the ground for insects, scorpions, bird eggs, fallen fruit, and small lizards and snakes, and occasionally scavenging carcasses and trash. They are particularly noted for their ability to find honey- splitting open bees nests with their claws and leisurely consuming larvae and honeycomb, seemingly untroubled by bee stings.
Wassibi are known above all else for their devastatingly noxious defensive anal gland spray. When threatened, they hiss, arch their backs and tails, raise their fur, and point their anus menacingly in the direction of danger. Should posturing fail, they will unleash their spray at the threat's face. Their anal glands have powerful muscular control and the attack is devastatingly accurate at up to 10 ft. In addition to having an atrocious stench, the liquid is mildly irritating to the skin, painful and temporarily blinding to the eyes, and can induce intense nausea and vomiting. The smell is resistant to washing, and can take weeks to fade. Most predators who experience a hit will learn to recognize the wassibi's stark aposematic coloring and avoid anything resembling it.
In addition to this potent defensive weaponry, they have dense fur and thick, loose skin, which renders them difficult for most predators to effectively grasp or pierce without risk of being bitten themselves. As such, wassibi have few consistent natural predators and are given a wide birth by most other animals. Their tendency to walk boldly in the open and sometimes even scavenge at carcasses alongside much larger predators commonly lends them cultural reputations of fearlessness. Wassibi are known for attacking large venomous snakes that potentially threaten their young, which (along with their frequent consumption of scorpions and bees) leads to common misconceptions that they are entirely immune to venom. They have no such resistance, rather their thick fur and loose skin cause bites and stings to land less effectively- most stings fail to penetrate their fur altogether, and bites often deal glancing blows that inject little to no venom.
Their biggest predatory threats come from humans. Wassibi meat is fairly rich and not unappealing to most palates used to wild game, but they are rarely considered worth the effort and risk of killing for consumption alone. They are more commonly hunted for their pelts (worn commonly by Wogan and North Wardi herders in hopes of deterring attacks from predators), bones, claws, and fat (used in traditional medicine for their purported antivenom properties). This hunting is fairly limited in scope overall, and most Wassibi populations remain stable.

I feel really bad about finding bugs disgusting ngl
Like 1. Nor the lil fellas fault, i just cant help thinking abt how theyd feel if they were to crawl on me and that leading me to being scared and grossed out
2. Like all my mutuals like bugs, like a LOT. I feel so bad not being able to relate to that specifically especially bcs they care dearly about bugs..
3. It is REALLY bad btw. And it is a blur of disgust and fear too. Which somehow leads to me. Being scared of butterflies more than i am of spiders, since they move less when on their presence

fuck it. plaguesona
#i thought of this a couple weeks ago on the bus a couple seats away from someone loudly coughing into the open air#i think something snapped and i decided to make a fuckin. medieval ass plague sona. horseman of pestilence fursona#this is also why i was asking abt animals with medical symbolism.. originally i wanted a two headed snake like the staff of caduceus#but it turns out thats actually hermes symbol. the real symbol for medicine is the rod of asclepius which looks pretty similar#the difference is that theres only one snake and its twined around a stick. ironically mercy from overwatch's weapons are named after#the caduceus despite the misconception LMAOOO#snakes were the most consistent medicine related animal i could find even across multiple cultures so it couldve really worked#if i could actually draw scalies.. one of my earliest sketches had a cobra with a syringe at the end of its tail like a rattlesnake#and it had markings similar to the syringe tube but i didnt have much else going on so i scrapped it#i was also recommended animals with less obvious ties to medicine like jellyfish and horseshoe crabs and learned something new ^_^#im not confident i could pull off a non-mammal furry but they were really good ideas i might put into smth else.. i also thought of#axolotls bc of their regenerative thing and growing back limbs but i think that would suit smth like a surgeon or amputation...#possums and bats were also an option bc theyre actually really resistant to most diseases like rabies but i feel like ppl wouldnt know that#if they saw it so it looks a little ironic at a glance. rabbits rats and mice were my second option bc of animal testing and lab rats#less obvious reference but the moon rabbit in chinese mythology is loosely connected to medicine bc it makes the elixir of life#otherwise lab mice in a pharmacy / modern medicine setting seemed fitting and jerboa tails remind me of cotton buds#and. ironically. jerboas are more closely related to elephants than rats and mice. can you believe it#my art#myart#my oc#sona#plaguesona#cottonbud#fur#furry art#character design#ref sheet#oc ref sheet

I follow a lot of bat blogs and... would it be silly of me to make one of my own? I just think they're so neat 🥺 (the bats I mean, but the blogs are neat too)
That's not silly at all! It's fun to post about these little guys, and it's handy having them all in one place! I made this blog just so I had all my bat images in one place for ease of looking. If you think it'd be fun to do, then by all means go ahead!

Im glad we have an actual view of the slugcat's profile (From Del Northern's original vinyl work, this came as along with it) and its not flat-faced. Still overall very short muzzles but not quiet persian cat style like some of their forward art would suggest

Never has an opening exhibit set up a park's vibes so immaculately.
Gatorland, Florida. Highly recommend if you're in the Greater Orlando area. Quintessentially Florida. I will miss it.

i designed a creature!
this is the nymph, a small (2-6 inches long) amphibious animal which can walk, swim, and glide. it has membranes as webbing between its toes, as a retractable flap on its back, and as a tail fin which all aid in locomotion -- these membranes are also photosynthetic organs which create energy for the nymph from sunlight, and, because of the chlorophyll they contain, the membranes are a beautiful emerald green. nymphs still do posess a simple digestive system, however, so they can eat plant matter when sunlight is low. nymphs are covered in short, soft, often colorful fur which helps keep them warm (nymphs are warm-blooded), and have antennae on their heads to assist in sensing stimuli.
nymphs live in moist areas, like rainforests, tropics, marshes, and near small bodies of water (lakes, rivers), with the amount of sunlight impacting their size (the sunnier the habitat, the larger the nymph). these creatures are at the bottom of the food chain, often preyed on by larger animals.
nymphs can reproduce sexually or asexually, and lay eggs: each individual nymph produces both gametes, and chooses which mode of reproduction to perform based on environmental factors. there are no sexes in nymphs, and no intraspecific competition.
these creatures are gregarious, living in large groups -- living in such a group, nymphs can take care of each other and their young, and protect themselves from predators by fluttering around in a swarm, confusing and disorienting with their bright colors. nymphs are fast-moving and prone to hiding, especially when separated from their group. nymphs are easily startled, and, despite their otherwise gentle and peaceful nature, are not able to be domesticated.
nymphs are named after the mythological beings of the same name: they are seen as an embodiment of nature, given their ability to move through air, land, and water, their similarity to plants, their beautiful colors, and their graceful movements.

ngl i really think cricket powder might be the future. ive heard they take 2000 times less water to raise than cows and obviously less space why are we not jumping on this. personally i cant find it in me to be squeamish abt bugs if they're ground into a fine powder like.. how is that more repulsive than a literal hunk of flesh and fat yknow
