Athena : Awakening in a Modern Life

[Special 8 (Crown) - Takeshi Hama]

Athena : Hmmm...Despite my antiques and my ambitious boding, I just hope I could get something from get go and maybe I won' make a down hill of the series, or maybe it's something else that I, a Teenage Pop Idol with incredible Psychic Powers, is making my life easier from being a Psychic Soldier to an Awesome Fighter . I wonder what I'm gonna wear something. Let's see...

*opens closet*

Athena : In order to prepare myself right after I do may daily routines, I'm gonna need the most proper outfit that I could easily wear for the match, I wonder what am I gonna wear?

(various scenes shows Athena in her outfits)

Athena in her Psychic Soldier : Nope.

Athena in Princess Athena Outfit : Uh-uh.

Athena in her PS1 Outfit : I have no idea this was from my spin-off title.

Athena in KOF Outfit : There, Just right. (looks at her watch) And with 10 minutes to spare. But first, need to clean up.

*uses her telekinesis to clean up fast*

Athena : There, that should do it

*DOOR Knocking*

Athena : Huh? That must be the guys. I hope they're read that I'm willing myself to be prepared for Athena Asamiya, legendary Psychic Girl and Pop Teen Idol Star! I'll be there in just a minute

Kyo : Athena, you in there? Come on, we're gonna be late!

Athena in her KOF Outfit : I'm ready!

*door opening*

Athena in her KOF outfit : Ready to be preapred!

Sie : Ah, Athena, I see you're still in your...outfit. You wear it all the time, I was gonna get it on with my "Piece de la resistance"!

Athena in her KOF outfit : I see, that. I hope that this match will be taken out by a girl with incredible psychic powers, in my out fighter outfit. This is a newer one that I made it. It's hardly a replica of my old one.

Sie : You sure. It looks definitely the same as your old one. You got some type of clothing don't ya?

Athena in her KOF Outfit : I think that the boys will be thinking that I'm liking this new outfit than my older ones.

Kyo : Really? It Looks the same to me. I bet your doesn't look like the one in that princess outfit that can out match the Female Soldier's outfit drom dragon Quest.

*DBZ SFX : Boing*

Athena : Eh!?...SHOCKWAVE!

*DBZ SFX : Energy Wave+BOOMING*

Athena : I am wearing this outfit no matter what I do, I will not change it for an appealing outfit, like Mai Shiranui's.

Mai Shiranui : Hey, nobody would said that I rather have an appeal since Sakurai banned from too much fanservice, I have no idea what's the big deal with these hanging around. Gainaxing was just not my style of having fans with this kind of clothing. It's not my fault that I still have an iconic design that looks like I'm almost naked. This is really pervy for me to handle this kind of clothing.

Athena : You were a little pervy too, Mai. I just couldn't do that to Masahiro Sakurai about the appealings of your revealing. Although, I did manage to help out some research at my school, me and Sie usually come over there. But despite being a teen, I'm looking good and staying young has never been this trustyworthy of a young idol. It's my specialty. [To Kyo] Sorry that I had to unleashed the powers of my psychic abilities. I just got too carried about controlling while during battles at the match.

Kyo : Great, you just had to pull that one out.

Benimaru : Ah, great! She just blown my lucky pants! Good luck, having an extra pair. Her powers are definitely an unstoppable match for both fighters that all have powers. Can't say, that she was definitely a girl with psychic powers from the 1980s.

Iori : Your guess is good as mine. But, I'll see if she would able use it wisely and not overdo it. You know what happens if she unleashed that powers. (imagines Athena charging up her powers)

Nappa : Vegeta! What does the scouter say about her power level!

Vegeta : For the last time, Nappa! It's not over 9000, you dolt! It's over--

*DBZ SFX : LOUD Energy explosion*

*dream cloud poofs out*

Ash : Now I understand why she has psychic powers to be a fighter at the tournament. Hope we got that covered in the packets. Terry spent weeks putting it on her tab.

Athena : Now that you excuse me, Psychic Soldier girl from the ordinary life is kicking some butt at the match! I got a fight to do at the tournament. Ciao! I mean...Teleport.

*DBZ SFX : Teleport*

Kyo : Okay, anybody wants something, you get something. Let's pretend we didn't saw her doing that. I bet she got it from one of them things they call it "Dragon Ball".

Benimaru : Good idea. But still, your probably gonna why she has an opportunity of having those powere

Iori : I'm gonna think about getting our selves. Where did she get those powers anyway?

Kyo : I think it was the spin-off title of her game.

Iori : Oh yeah, that's we she kept those powers from others. Probably the 80s. I wonder how her match is gonna be great?

Kyo : It's called Awakening in a Modern Day life.

"One KOF match later..."

*instant transmission*

Athena : Hey, guys! I'm back from the match. That was a super tough fight, plus I even did that one guy to the face with my powerful Psycho Ball!

Kyo : How are you even doing that? What kind of powers have you been wielding?

Athena : Easy, I'm a psychic, like Sie does. I have great powers such as ESP or energy that makes my powers real psychic. Also, I did this in my PS1 Spin-off title, Awakening From the Ordinary Life.

Kyo : That's only in Japan. You got those powers from your old game and that game, so what kind of powers do you do for yourself?

Athena : Easy! Me and Sie are psychic brothers and sisters! We used the power of psychokinesis in our old days before you guys! I can move objects around with the amazing and incredible feeling from psychic powers. Watch me to do this of grabbing a slice of pepperoni pizza by using my super psychokinetic powers! (strains)

*uses Psychokinesis to grab the slice of pizza*

Athena : Totally awesome! See? (eats the pizza) ESP is my special powers, hopefully I find it useful. That's why I had these crazy spin-offs from SNK before the start of SNK, Psycho Soldier dates back to the very foundation to the KOF world.

Kyo : That's quite an ethical thought on how you are good of using your powers to defeat the forces of evil. You are definitely that good.

Sie : Aw man! That is so awesome! Let me try to use Psychokinesis to grab the slice of pizza! (Strains)

*uses psycokinesis*

Sie : (straning) I'm think I'm doing it! I'm think I'm doing it for real!

Athena : Are you sure that using Psychokinesis could be a problem? I mean it looks kinda dangerous to use it, but don't over do it.

Sie : Nope! It's fine! It's just what we do in our glory days! It's just a force of habit going to a feeding a frenzy when it comes to th unmatched powers of psychokinesis! Hopefully that big ol' slice of pizza is finally mine! So let me have it! (opens his mouth wide) CHOW TIME!

*WHOOSH+SPLAT!*

Athena : Ha! You got pie over your face! Sorry, Sie! But that was the last slice of pizza I had to get it with my psychic powers. It's magic, mwah! But hey, don't worry and don't feel sad, I'll get us a nice Pizza Party from a pizza joint. I'll get it for you when it's delivered and I know just to find a pizza place. TELEPORT!

*SA2 : Chaos Control*

Kyo : Hey, Where'd she go!? That is the power of her psyschokinesis. No wonder why she's always been like that.

*Athena teleports back*

Athena as a Pizza Girl : Hey, everyone! The rightful order is right here! I got Pizza Hut dinner! Fresh from the oven! With celery and wings sided with ranch and blue cheese! And of course, I even go with the cheesesticks!

Benimaru : Aw yeah! Pizza time! I got the drinks!

Shingo : I got the music!

Ash : And I got the games to play. Actually, we were just here for the games and for the pool party.

Shingo : I thought grabbing myself a Baozi would be a quick bite to eat, but I'm going crazy for pizza! Woohoo! Party time!

Sie : Hey, save me for a slice! I'm getting the pepperorin slice and I have the wings each and everyone! But everyone sharing wings!

Iori : Hey, buddy. Trying grabbing yourself a slice.

Kyo : Okay, fine.

(scene flips)

[Pac Entrance playing]

Terry : You know, Kyo. Athena is a great girl with bringing food to the party by using her psychic powers, yeah, I love food! I mean, love food and fighting in all of the video game world. Trust me, she's really great of using her powers against the forces of Evil. All of this made me starving, but I prefer hot dogs, hamburgers with cheese, and home made fried chicken or we like to prefer it Drumsticks. *drumsticks explodes*

Andy : Dude! The food just exploded!

Mai : Well, can't say that we're eating it real good, Athena plus psychic powers equals Awakening in the Ordinary Life. Totally cramming my style since Smash wouldn't let me see. Too much appealing. But man, this stuff great better than eating sushi at a sushi place.

Terry : Yeah, I prefer pizza and burgers in my home town, But I eat veggie patty burgers. Cause I love eating veggie burgers instead of meat. Also Kuny Pao Chicken is actually a dish that Geese howard does not easy greasy food, but eat something that is very exquisite.

Kyo : So that's why you are interest in healthy stuff, Tofu burger are the greatest and veggie patties are...well, a veggie patty. Who knew this Pizza Hut party would make us all crazy to party.

Mai : You know this pizza party really hit the spot, Athena. You could've brought the pizza from the local store.

Athena : I used to cook on my old days when I was popular back in my days. So now, I'm ginna make all of you guys how great is it from being a psychic soldier to an awesome fighter, it made me look great that Psycho Soldier was the very foundation of Fatal Fury and KOF of years of my own life. We and Sie are a great team back in the old days of SNK! *Taps glass with a spoon) Attention, I've wanted to thank you all for coming to my party, it's so great that we loved awakening to the ordinary life of a psychic girl. Ever since Psycho Girl was the very foundation of the world of KOF. Pretty good, right? And I have fellow wisdom to all of my KOF friends. You are all very welcome to me.

(applause)

Athena : Thank you, thank you! Bring it back, bring it now.

Sie : Alright, alright! Good for you, Athena.

Athena : Now then. Now that all of you are here to celebrate the party of SNK's oldest veterans in all of the world, I will let us bring us a toast to SNK's best psychic girl since the 80s.

Sie : Yes, a toast to SNK'S coolest veterans!

All : Cheers!

(applause)

*TINK*

Athena : Bottoms up, Sie!

Sie : Sure thing!

*GULP*

Athena : Hey, Sie. I was just thinking about something. This whole friendly-family thing for us would be all a good time to celebrate my day about the foudation of the world of KOF, me, the one repsonisble for--

*heartbeating+monitor beeping rapidly*

Athena : (holds chest in pain) Oh! Aaah! What did you boneheads do to me!?

Sie : Athena! What's happening to you, man!?

Athena : My heart! I can't take it! This is not what I planned for! I am having troubles with my powers! I need my medication! An aspirin! Nanomachines!

Sie : Nanomachines. That's only a thing in Metal Gear.

Mai : Oh my God! She's having a heart attack! or is it Foxdie?

Athena : No! It's worse! It's my--(deathly gags)

*THUD+COLLAPSE*

Sie : Athena, you alright? Athena! Oh my god...She's dead.

*Instant Transmission*

Athena : Surprise!

Sie : Athena! How on earth did you do that?! I thought you were death noted by yourself!

Athena : Did you really think that I was gonna get a Death Note by someone who writes people's names?

Iori : that was quite a performance. How on earth did you do that or when did she do that?

Terry : like I said it’s her powers. She is a psychic from the 1980s. That’s why she has done that before. It's always about being a great fighter. Nonetheless that she always have a reputation for being this popular as a fighting character since the 80s.

Sie : Athena, that was magic. How can that be you when you are standing right here to wait your return? Isn't this girl from that spin-off that we were in? I thought it has something to do with the psychic power thing and how did you know that the other you got death noted?

Athena : Easy! It's called "Magic", oldest trick in the book. And that other me who really got death noted, that was my stunt double or should I say PS1 me from my spin-off title Athena : Awakening From the Ordinary Life. Japanese PS1 horror game never to be released outside to the west.

Sie : The PS1 you? Oh, the PS1 you.

Athena : You know, Sie. I was wondering, being a Psychic Soldier is what we meant in our old days in the 80s and 90s, but we're not that kind of soldier anymore. We're fighters now, we can keep our psychic powers to rest and we may even use it at matches during our battles

Sie : That's great to hear from you, Athena.

Athena : And not just of all I do have some things that we might even do things, I can even do telekinesis or telepathy. You know, you have a part to play with psychic abilities

Sie : Oh, cool. Wanna go do Psychokinesis on our adventures?

*CHA-CHING!*

Athena : I, I love being a PSYCHIC SOLDIER!

Sie : Yeah, I don't think this is good idea. Why are we doing this?

Athena : Just a friendly reminder. We're playing this kind of game.

Sie : Well, it's kinda boring. Not fun at all. Hey, since we're playing dumb old game were playing for kids, you Wanna go play some games at the Dave and Busters?

Athena : Nah, I'm good at playing fighting games at home. But I could go for some food at the Dave and Busters. They got some great service to serve

Sie : Right on, Psycho sister! Let's got to the dave and busters! But first, I really need to give you one simplist of tasks.

Athena : Sure, what are you tasking me to do something

Sie : First of all, it's easy and I'm going to give you a hint. How are you going to fix my bike since I got a flat tire on it , I really needed to go the Dave and Buster's, not without you.

Athena : Forget a bunch of tools, I can fix the tires of your bike by using the awesomeness and mighty powers of Athena Asaya. Here I go...Get ready! Time to go full-use with my psycho powers! (Straining) I'm doing this to fix my friend's bike. Gotta use this power.

Sie : Come on, Athena. You can do it. All you need is to fix my bike's tower with your psychic powers. Please, don't over do it or else that you will...

*DBZ SFX : Energy Whirring*

Athena : It's getting closer. I can feel it, I can feel the psychic powers within me, I'm feeling beyond my will and beginning to understand my full potential, once I used this power to fix everything, I could easily make everyone's mistakes go away. How's that surprising? Totally, you're in for a nasty Psycho girl surprise!

Sie : Uhh, Athena? I wouldn't do that if I were you--I, uhh--I don't think you could handle that kind of power! That's too much power! Athena, settle it down! You're gonna charge yourself too much, it could unleashed a super deadly force!

Athena : Relax, Sie! I'm under control, I got this! My psychic powers will never let us down and there won't be a single problem.

Sie : Athena! You're going to unleashe your powers! It's going to make a huge energy reaction! It will effect the entire world!

*DBZ SFX : Powering up+booming*

Terry : Hey, guys. do you feel like that the planet is shaking and hear sudden waves of vibration.

Mai : Whatever it is, I do not like the sound of it.

Athena : What's the deal guys! It's only my psychic powers. How bad can it be once I unlock by reaching my full potential it's not like that I'm about to blow up or anything.

*BOING*

Athena : (realizing ) Uh-oh. This can't be good.

Terry and Kyo : Aw, Crap bask--

*DBZ SFX : Loud Energy Explosion*

*Sizzling*

Athena : (chuckles nervously) Whoops. I think I overdid it a little.

Sie : Never to unleashed that kind of power.

Athena : (sweatdrop Icon, nervously) Sorry about that, everyone! I got too carried away with my powers being over leveled. I hope it's not that riduculous power level that I unleashed.

[cues Grass Skirt Chase]

Iori : Oh, you done it this time! You're gonna make us real sorry on how did you ever pull out these little magic tricks of yours!

Mai : You nearly costs us our lives from your so-called psychic powers, little idol girl!

Ash : You'll be real sorry if we ever see you do that again!

Leona : You are gonna regret this, young ma'am.

Athena : Hey, now! Let's all not be a little too hasty, I know, I know, I'm a girl from the 80s, I've been a pretty good girl since my Popularity, We can be good at fixing each other's mistakes, I know I've been a great idol with all my platinum albums, my awards, and records were nothing would work for me, So I gave up being an idol and decided to become a fighter. I would definitely clean this up in a jiffy. Any help on fixing all of this, Sie?

Sie : Nope. Not on your life, Athena. You'll probably have to figure it out sooner than that.

Athena : (sweatdrop icon, nervously) Eh...I think I might wanna help you guys out! See ya! *ZOOM!* (yelling) YAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!

Iori Yagami : (chases after) WAIT TILL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU, YA LITTLE MAGIC GIRL! I WILL MERCIFULLY KILL YOU!

Sie : (sighs) Well, sometimes you just gotta let someone get their lessons learned. It's always about being a psychic soldier and an awesome fighter. You win, you lose some. Also, I can give everyone a major fix on this place.

*SIZZLING*

Terry : Yeah, we might gonna pay for all the damages that we caused. Only there's someone to have this place rebuilt with all the magical powers from you.

Sie : I guess that's why it's called an ESP which is Magic of course.

One of my favorite films to show in my cinema aesthetics course is HERO (’02), Zhang Yimou’s tale of ancient China in which history slides into myth as martial arts heroes make the ultimate sacrifice to unite their homeland. Students who are unfamiliar with martial arts films gasp and titter during the first fight scene when actors Jet Li and Donnie Yen fly through the air, defying gravity as they spin, leap and thrust their swords several feet above ground. The aerial acrobatics represent a defining convention of wuxia (pronounced “woosha”), a type of martial arts film. Lucky for us fans, FilmStruck is currently streaming four wuxia titles.

The wuxia protagonist is a variation of the warrior hero, an archetype that is truly universal. Like the Japanese samurai, the Western gunfighter or the European knight, the wuxia warrior is an independent mercenary with a strong moral code. The “wu” in wuxia connotes a kind of gallant courage and comes from the Chinese word for martial arts, “wushu.” The “xia” has been variously translated as hero, roving knight, swordsman or adventurer, among other similar meanings. While characters do engage in passionate romances, they are measured by their skills in martial arts, their capacity for loyalty/honor and their ability to execute an act of revenge. Wuxia tales are beloved for their fantasy worlds where myth combines with history and the natural skirts the supernatural.

Wuxia tales go back centuries in Chinese literature, often emerging during eras of strife between the common folk and their emperors. In cinema, wuxia dates back to the silent era with BURNING OF THE RED LOTUS TEMPLE (’28), a serial consisting of 18 episodes released over a three-year period. Director Zhang Shichuan crafted an action-driven narrative with displays of martial arts by women warriors devoted to a cause. Spectacle and fantasy were provided by special effects. The serial was such a hit that it spawned a genre. The Chinese film industry consisted of about 50 production studios during the silent era, and wuxia was so popular that it accounted for 60% of their total output. In fact, the genre proved to be too popular. During the 1930s, Chiang Kai-shek banned films featuring martial arts and magic. Supposedly, he believed these films of China’s feudal past, which featured mythic tales of superhuman fighting skills, looked backward instead of forward into a modern era. Another reason given by historians for the genre’s ban is the chaotic nature of the Chinese film industry at the time. I’m no expert in modern Chinese history, but I can’t help but think a genre featuring highly skilled warriors who rebel against an established government wouldn’t sit well with any leader.

Wuxia reappeared in the 1960s in Hong Kong, where it evolved under the hand of director Chang Cheh. Cheh, who worked for the Shaw Brothers studio, made over 100 wuxia films. King Hu, another director for the Shaw Brothers, also contributed heavily to the evolution of the genre. Two of Hu’s best films, A TOUCH OF ZEN (’71) and DRAGON INN (’67) are available as part of FilmStruck’s salute to The Worlds of Wuxia. Next week, I will explore more closely Hu’s contributions to martial arts movies and other Hong Kong action films.

Wuxia returned to mainland China just after the millennium when the directors dubbed the Fifth Generation restored it to its former glory. Zhang Yimou redefined the genre with the release of HERO in 2002, following up with HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (’04) and CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER (’06). To represent this era of wuxia, FilmStruck offers HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS and He Ping’s WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH (’03).

Zhang developed a different approach to martial-arts action scenes, turning them into lyrical dances that are meticulously choreographed. The gravity-defying acrobatics are achieved through wirework in which the actors’ skills in martial arts are augmented with the use of wires and pulleys, as well as other stage techniques. The actors are hoisted high above ground where they race across treetops, spin and roll through the air, hang upside down, and square off in fights with swords and knives. Their graceful movements are captured in well-planned camerawork and highlighted in slow motion. Costumes and settings, even exterior shots of beautiful landscapes, are color coordinated to underscore the mood of the narrative in key scenes.

In HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, Zhang immerses the viewer in a fantasy world in which color, motion and mood drive the narrative as much as plot. Set in 859 AD during a declining Tang Dynasty, the film follows the efforts of a rebel army as it wages war against the corrupt government. Called the House of Flying Daggers, the army is thriving under the direction of a new but mysterious leader. Two imperial captains, Leo (Andy Lau) and Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) hatch an elaborate plan to bring down the House of Flying Daggers, but their efforts are complicated by Mei (Zhang Ziyi), a female revolutionary who is skilled in the martial arts. In disguise as a rebel, Jin escorts Mei through the bamboo forest to the secret headquarters of the House of Flying Daggers. Along the way, he falls in love with her, compromising his mission. The journey includes my favorite scene in HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS in which Mei battles a battalion of soldiers among the bamboo trees. The verdant green of the forest dominates as soldiers slide down bamboo trunks, dangle from tree tops, and hurl thousands of bamboo spears at breakneck speeds. While Hollywood seems determined to wallow in desaturated palettes of steely blues and burnished browns (re: Universal’s reboot of THE MUMMY [’17]), Zhang’s vivid colors are truly a sight for sore eyes.

Key to the wuxia genre is the role of women warriors. Unlike American Westerns, Japanese samurai films or tales of errant knights, wuxia includes female characters who are fierce and valiant fighters. Their skills, courage and heroism are equivalent to the male characters, and their gender is never a factor in the fight scenes. While much was made of WONDER WOMAN (’17) as a breakthrough film for women in the Hollywood superhero genre, fierce women fighters have been part of wuxia since the beginning as evidenced by such titles as FIVE VENGEFUL GIRLS (’28), THE FEMALE PIRATE (’29), GIRL BANDIT (’30) and WOMAN BODYGUARD (’31).

In the rebirth of wuxia by the Fifth Generation directors, the convention of featuring fierce women warriors continued. Actress Zhang Ziyi rose to stardom in Ang Lee’s wuxia blockbuster CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (’00) before she was cast in Zhang’s HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.

I have always preferred genre films to realist dramas. Sadly, the Hollywood genre film is rapidly disintegrating as the major studios sacrifice cinematic craftsmanship for hyper-edited action scenes, pump money into franchises with interchangeable plots and continue to chase after adolescent males as their desired demographic. In my pursuit of decent genre filmmaking, I have become a fan of martial arts films from Asia, horror films and police procedurals from South Korea and action movies from France. If you like your heroes larger than life, your action sequences exciting (that is, well crafted) and your dialogue snark-less, I suggest going global with your film viewing.
