Bound: Under Giant Mountains by wolfpants
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The delightful, evocative, and thoughtful Under Giant Mountains by @wolfpants is up next in my tour of wolf’s fic I bound. This landscape of this fic is soaring: mountains and dragons and wilderness. But at the same time, its subject matter is as small and carefully contained as Harry's postwar pain. This is a Harry who is struggling, and struggling to even admit he's struggling. At the risk of spoiling anything, the way wolf writes Harry's breakdown and surrender is so, so soft and sweet and real. I love a Harry who confronts any danger head-on except the danger of what's going on inside him.
(Fun fact: this fic was posted while I was in the midst of writing Polar Night/Midnight Sun and I was like OH GOOD WOLF HAS DONE THE DRACO IN NORWAY THING AND DONE IT BETTER THAN I COULD, I CAN STOP WRITING NOW but of course, I didn't stop; I let wolf's words inspire me onwards, and this is another reason why I love fandom: the overlapping of writerly worlds, the echoes and resonances we experience as creators and fans.)
For this bind, I chose a relatively simple aesthetic, but couldn't resist inserting little tiny dragons as scene breaks.
More process and materials talk under the cut.
Materials: This was my first go at making bookcloth! I had purchased a little remainder scrap of forest green cotton at the fabric store and only noticed after ironing it out and laminating it to the tissue that there were stripes of sun damage on the creases of the cloth, sigh. I had to start over. I used mulberry tissue but some of the fibres are palpable through the cloth, which I am not wild about. Still -- homemade bookcloth! Fun!
Text block is printed on 24 lb cream letter cut down to a quarto bind, and is actually the first bind I did where my grain direction was correct. (I know, I know...) Sewn on two linen tapes with waxed linen thread.
Endbands (which I neglected to photograph, apparently) are machine made.
End papers are just scrapbook paper, nothing special.
The decoration is gold HTV. Hoo boy. More on that shortly.
Process: My first quarto bind! First bookcloth making! First bind with the grain direction correct! So many firsts!
That being said, there was nothing particularly special about this bind's process. My biggest struggle (which is visible) was the gold HTV. I think I've since cracked the code more on how to apply larger bits of HTV without making marks in it (short version: higher heat, less pressure, more patience) but I was still struggling here, as you can see. That being said, I do love the sort of hobbity vibe of the rune-ish font and the dragon/mountain.
I made myself a copy of this as a test first, and the HTV is even more messed up on that. :| Also, I realized when reading it afterwards, I fucked up the page order in one signature. This is fixed (god, I hope it's fixed) in wolf's copy.
Signature length is a tricky thing with case binding/sewn binding in general. I wound up needing a bunch of blank pages at the back of the typeset so I did something I have since done in other binds: added a "selected praise for" section where I copy/pasted AO3 comments into the text block like literary reviews. I love this so much: the juxtaposition of the formal literary trope with the squee and all-caps and hype of fandom commenters. I am not the first to do this, of course, but you'll see it appear again in future binds from me for sure. (And of course I put my own comment first. OF COURSE I did. Binder's privilege!)

The "calling police is inherently immoral" takes feel… maybe a bit US-centric? All countries have structural issues with police that come as the result of the conflict of interests between individual people and the interest of the bourgie state, but not every country's police force is a highly-militarized, highly-armed trigger-happy murder force comprised of wannabe bullies the way the US's seems to be. Some do clear that very low bar. Hell, there are tons of countries where regular police officers aren't even armed.
In my life I've called the police twice over student parties past midnight so loud you could hear them two streets away, and once over someone's dog being trapped/forgotten in the trunk of car, distressed and barking continuously.
Even in a world after police abolition, the above kind of policing will continue to need to happen. Some people are dicks, and some situations need intervention. A shitton of civil law, not criminal law, exists for a very good reason and still requires some form of police to enforce. I like to think I have a pretty hopeful view of humanity, but the reason people in my country have stopped smoking indoors, and don't leave their trash in random places, and don't piss in the middle of the street, is that all of those things are illegal and can result in police being called and getting you fined. There is absolutely no way people en masse would obey those "don't be a dick" laws without that stick hanging over them.
In a country where police are so fucked up that calling them over a minor disturbance is likely to get people killed, yeah, I would probably not call the police and just suck it up and mourn the fact that the supposed justice system has become completely unusable for its intended purpose. But not all countries are like that.
(To be clear: I don't agree with calling police over someone doing drugs.)
even in countries where the police are not just outright death squads putting young people, especially young people of colour or working class young people, into a situation where they suddenly have to interact with the police is just not a cool thing to do. you've correctly identified that the role of the police is to repress the working class, no matter whether they're the white supermacist paramilitary groups of the US or the less militarized and better at PR police forces of Europe. like. the police in the UK are also 'not as bad' as the police in the US and yet they still do all kinds of horrendous racist violent shit and kill people. even the darling of democratic socialism norway, famous for its humane prison and policing system, actually still experiences police brutality, because no matter how 'professional' and disarmed the police force is its role is to enforce bourgeois property rights through violence. the idea that there is an 'intended purpose' to the justice is just buying into the police's hype.
& hey by the way you know who leaves their trash in the street and pisses there? homeless people. people who have nowhere else to put their trash or piss. the idea that the police are the only thing keeping society from descending into 'chaos' (i.e. visible signs of poverty and homelessness existing) is genuinely deeply reactionary. it's thin blue line shit. sure, it's cool that calling the police in your country isn't playing russian roulette with someone else's life but if you think that the police aren't 'a murder force' or 'comprised of wannabe bullies' wherever you live then i think you should probably look harder and pay more attention because there are almost certainly anti-police activists there who can tell you otherwise!

Heyyy Idk if U still active but I LOVE your Hesperia x Nathalie headcanons & I wanted to know if you could make a drabble outta one of them
I'm super into the fact that Hesperia is the spontaneous one so!! Drabble Yay or Nay?
Plus I binged Ur writing and ughhh I love it 💕💕
Greetings from Norway!!!
A Gabenath Drabble: A Creature of Wonder
Note: Hello! Hi! I’m so sorry it took me so long to reply to this! I’m so honored that you love my writing and my headcanons that really means a lot to me! Also I’ve heard a lot of great things about Norway I hear it’s very pretty there! Thanks for the greeting! 😊
Anyway I know this fic is a little longer than a drabble is supposed to be but I hope you enjoy it! 💓💕💓💕
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Rated: K
Word Count: 428
Summary: Hesperia drags Nathalie out on a midnight adventure much to her chagrin and anxiety but perhaps he can prove to her that this little outing was worth it for both her and someone else.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
“I don’t think you realize how risky this is,” Nathalie grumbled for what seemed like the hundredth time in the past hour.
“Shh!”
The soft pad of Hesperia’s pointer finger met the bow of her lips.
She scoffed, a flurry of both slighted annoyance and poignant worry swarming through her. Her voice pitched to a slightly higher, reverent whisper.
“You can’t be out here! Bobbling about! Out in the open! You can’t—”
“Shh! Look…” Hesperia interrupted, his voice low, his gaze focused on something in the shadows of the forlorn alleyway.
The eeriness of this little secret midnight escapade left a tangle of knots in Nathalie’s stomach, causing the hairs on the back of her neck to stand on end.
She huffed as Hesperia gently set her down on the cool pavement, his hands remaining on her shoulders. She blinked, allowing her eyes to adjust to the darkness surrounding them.
She gasped.
It wasn’t obvious right away, but if she looked closely, she could see the outline of what looked to be a little insect… something white? A moth perhaps? Or…
“A kamiko?” Nathalie murmured, her hand instinctively reaching out for the little creature.
“Look closer…” Hesperia whispered, his lips grazing against her ear.
Nathalie’s brows furrowed. The kamiko’s wings fluttered quickly, but it did not take off. It was stuck, somehow trapped between two throngs of twisted barbed wire covering the security gate blocking one side of the alleyway.
“Oh, the poor thing…” Nathalie cupped her hands, leaning closer.
“How come it won’t come to you?” Nathalie asked, while trying to coax the kamiko forward from its mini prison.
Hesperia chuckled, his blue eyes glistening.
“This one isn’t attracted to me.”
Nathalie snorted and couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that comment.
“Oh, please, how can a butterfly not love a butterfly-loving man like yourself?” she asked, teasing.
Hesperia smiled, soft and fond.
“Because kamikos respond to emotions, especially strong ones like love.”
Nathalie’s face heated, but she covered it well with another eye roll, though she was distracted by the feeling of a soft, tickling flutter against her palms.
She looked down to see that the little kamiko had made its way into her hands. She smiled, her heart melting as she nurtured it.
“Oh, and look at that,” Hesperia mused, “he’s found a home… with you,” Hesperia paused, a smirk on his lips as he kissed her cheek, “just as I have.”
Nathalie grinned, pressing her lips to his. She opened her palms between their embrace and set the little creature of wonder free.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A/N: Thank you so much for reading! I hope you liked it! I also want to apologize again for how long it took me to get this out and also for any grammatical errors.
Again thanks for reading and I’m open to any and all requests!

DAY 5630
Jalsa, Mumbai            July 16/17/18 ,  2023             Sun/Mon/Tue  12:00 AM
This ☝🏽 is incorrect .. I did write for Sunday and just realised that I had not pressed the POST button .. ufff .. you must have all read it by now .. about the Sunday GOJ and the Final of Wimbledon ..
and I am leaving all this 👇🏽 as it is .. for all to realise what went through .. oh dear o dear ..
Oh Gosh ! I must be getting mad or close to it .. I was under the impression that all was done and the Blog was out .. but today Ef said they were worried that had not seen the Blog for 2 days .. !
So I just returned from work and realised it was true .. no post had gone or written for the past 2 days ..
I do not even wish to attempt to write an apology because that has been happening too often ..
Well ..
Sunday was a bit eventful ..
The GOJ was ecstatic .. the cheer was less, but the numbers greater and greater the number of mobiles .. I am blessed ..
There was Wimbledon and the favorite playing the FINAL ..
so now it should read
Jalsa, Mumbai            July 17/18,  2023             Mon/Tue 12:12 AM
🪔 .. July 16 .. birthday greetings to Ef Sanjay H Aggarwal .. Ef Amit Agarwal from Ghana 🇬🇭 .. and Ef Mukesh Hirani from Chennai ..
🪔 .. July 17 .. birthday greetings to Ef Walaa Zakariya Mohamed Ali from Egypt 🇪🇬 ..
🪔 .. July 18 .. birthday greetings to Ef Hitesh Kshtriya from Norway 🇳🇴 .. and special one to Ef Zafar Keymaker for his constant affection ..
.. love to all and affection and the best of joys to you .. 😘
and have just returned from work .. from a long stint at shoot .. and since I had breakfast at 10 am yesterday and worked all day without a food break, I must eat .. right now .. it is a bit late for that, but I shall eat and then get back to all .. and for this MY APOLOGIES and sincere sorries .. !!
AM BACK .. my love ad affection to all for the understanding of this mistake ..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i seek forgiveness and hope they are forthcoming .. this above was Sunday and then after it was as if there was no interest left in the youngster .. but I remained and am here to be with all . ...
Is the mind working us or the other way round .. it may seem to many as the advent of extreme stupidity, but truly there needs to be a study at least to discover which is which .. the mind or us the body it inhabits ..
Each day brings to us the complicated explorations of not just those that exude architectural excellence .. but of the advent of one that is artificially ruled .. AI
The most complicated results of such are awe inspiring and frightening as well .. the take over of the human by a mind that is made by man but has a mind of its own - in time .. a relevant exercise of that famous adage .. ‘mind over matter’ .. or now mind over mind ..
The process of the alternative , that has been so assiduously sought from time immemorial has reached a point where humanity cannot deny or readily accept its possibility  ..
Of this later perhaps ..
the timepiece for the moment declares itself in the two arrowed tongs as a quarter to three in the A of the M  ..
what really do AM and PM stand for  :
ante meridiem “AM” stands for “ante meridiem.” The Latin phrase “ante meridiem” means “before noon” or “before midday.” That's why, in the 12-hour system, all times from midnight onward use this designation. PM stands for “post meridiem,” meaning “after noon” or “after midday,” and as such applies to the times from noon onward
Ok so knowledge gained .. deed for the day .. done ..

It was now the beloved holiday of Christmas and even though the snow fell violently outside, covering all in its path the population of forks still loved the day when Jesus was born.
Tumblr media
Y/n sat in her dimly lit room, snuggled under a mount of fluffy blankets with her oldest version of ‘Little women’ in her hand.
Even though Charlie wanted to open their presents as soon as the clock struck midnight, y/n protested and insisted they wait until six am.
However, the girl was given the freight of her life when the ping and white vintage alarm rang on her bedside table and in an instant, her door swung open and her older brother practically flew into her room and onto her bed, laying al his body weight on top of her.
“Charles, actually piss off. You’re gonna put me in a bad mood”
When he didn’t move, she attempted to push him; only failing miserably at the pathetic attempt because even though she had superhuman strength, her brother was still stronger.
“Charles Edmond Mathew y/l/n, Piss off of me!” She shouted angrily as he got up weakly; his uncontrollable laughing taking over him.
He grabbed her hand and dragged her into the living room where their decorated tree sat with a couple presents under their tree.
They both sat down like little children with their legs crossed and facing eachother as Charlie grabbed a present and handed it to his baby sister.
“Okay, open mine first” he told her eagerly as she giggled and started to unwrap the pink ribbon.
“Rip it open”
“No Charles, I don’t want to ruin it”
After a good minute she managed to end Charlie’s misery and open the wrapper, revealing a picture frame and an envelope.
She picked up the picture as it revealed their first day of high school in 1958.
Like always, they joined in the first day of senior year, claiming to be two eighteen year olds.
Y/n’s hair was cut into a Bob and had been straightened and rolled as she styled a side part.
She wore a coral and white dress which matched her platform coral heels and made her brown eyes pop.
She was stood next to a grinning Charles, his arm over her shoulders as he held a peace sign.
Y/n shedded a tear as she remembered this day like the back of her hand.
Since segregation was still around and even though Charles and y/n were just as white as they were black, they were forced to be put with the ‘colored people’.
It was their first day and the only fair skinned person who showed them kindness was Laura.
She was a gorgeous, petite woman with dark hair, dark eyes and an infectious smile.
Tumblr media
She noticed the siblings struggling to take the picture with the camera and offered to take it for them knowing full well that she could’ve gotten in trouble.
Luckily no teachers noticed and the worse they got was dirty stares.
From then onwards the siblings and the girl got on very well and when school had ended and Charles and y/n had to move, that was the hardest goodbye that they faced as y/n had a new best friend and Charles had met a girl he loved.
Brought back to reality, y/n reached over to her brother, hugging him tight.
“Oh Charles, thank you”
He hugged her back as he kissed her cheek.
“you’re welcome baby sis, check the envelope though”
She went back to her position, grabbing the envelope and opening it quicker than the last gift, revealing two plane tickets to Norway.
“No flipping way, thank you!” She squealed kissing his cheek repeatedly.
~
The gifts were now finished being opened and the two siblings had freshened up; now entering their car to get on their way to the Swan residence.
I’m the past couple days, y/n and Charlie swan had developed a flirty friendship with lingering hugs and a a couple touches on the arm or waist here and there when talking.
One of the days when they had a drink together, Bella walked into the house and got a long with y/n more than anyone could expect.
They came to the conclusion for y/n to come over on Christmas Day for a little visit.
And as agreed, the siblings made their way to the house as Charlie drove, singing along to Christmas songs and y/n stared out of the front window.
Tumblr media
When they had finally arrived at the swan house, they were welcomed in by Bella as she led them to the living room saying that her dad would be down in a minute.
“So tell us Bells, have you gotten anything nice for Christmas so far?” Charles asked his student as teacher mode took over him.
“Ugh, yeah, a couple of things here and there”
The silence was slightly awkward and y/n just stared at the ceiling to avoid eye contact.
“Hey guys” Cheif swan told them as y/n walked over to him to give him a hug.
She couldn’t help but notice his hand on her lower back as his thumb rubbed it.
“What’s good Charlie”
“Hey Charlie” the guys said as they dapped eachother up.
They all sat down around the crackling fire before Charlie swan asked them what drinks they’d like.
Y/n looked at her brother suggestively before requesting whiskey; Charles nodding in agreement.
Charlie made his way to his wooden cabinet, pulling out his eldest and most expensive bottle of Jack Daniel’s in attempt of impressing the curly haired woman sat next to his teenage daughter.
~
Throughout the entire evening at the swan residence, y/n couldn’t help but notice the Police chief’s horrible attempts at flirting, but she also couldn’t help returning those flirtatious words and lingering touches.
And before everyone realised, so much time had passed that nobody apart from y/n noticed Bella sneak out to go see Edward.
Or that’s what y/n assumed.
Y/n was sat with her legs over Charlie’s as she noticed Bella drop her backpack on the floor and once they made eye contact, Bella made a pleading face as she brought her finger up to her lips; y/n nodding in return.
That was about 2 hours ago, and now y/n and Charlie were tired of pretending to be drunk and wanted to go home.
Charlie lifted up his left wrist, glancing at his watch, reading 23:03.
“Hey guys, I think it’s time to go” he announced before getting up as his sister and her ‘situationship’ followed suit.
When they got to the doorway, Charles was too busy tying his shoes so Charlie saw that as an opportunity to pull y/n to a more private corner.
He pulled out a cardboard box with a red ribbon on it while holding eye contact.
“This is for you, merry Christmas y/n. I was also wondering if maybe y-you’d like to go out on a date with me sometime?” He asked as he handed her the box and scratched the nape of his neck nervously.
Y/n grinned at his vulnerable demeanour and opened the box carefully, revealing a beige dream catcher.
Her eyes widened in wonder as she imagined it dangling on her car mirror during her and her brother’s next move.
Tumblr media
“I know it’s not the best, I even had to get Harry Clearwater to help me with it since m’not that crafty at all” he chuckled at his own words.
Y/n reached up and kissed his cheek tenderly.
“Thank you Charlie, I really appreciate it”
She told him with a smile. She then moved towards his ear and placed her hand on his shoulder.
“And yes, I’d love to go out with you on a date sometime”
~
Due to some road complications with the snow, the drive home for the siblings lasted longer than they had wished it did, taking 30 minutes instead of the usual 10.
As Charles pulled up to their driveway, Y/n got out of her brother’s car as quickly as possible, making her way to the doorstep and going straight to her bedroom to shower and put on her pyjamas.
~
It was now 1:00am and y/n was sat in her original position: ‘little women’ in her hand and a variety of pillows and blankets layered over her when out of nowhere, she heard a knock on her window.
She glanced at the window, being met with Carlisle hanging over the edge of the windowsill.
She opened it up as he climbed in, closing it straight after.
“Charlie Swan, how pathetic y/n” he stated.
She noticed a box in his hand but payed no mind.
“Hey y/n. How are you y/n? Merry Christmas y/n” sarcasm was written all over her face.
He paced furiously towards her, causing the girl to move back nervously as she was cornered in her bedroom.
“I waited hours for you and no show, only to find out from my son’s girlfriend that you were having a great time in Charlie Swans house doing who-knows-what”
He said angrily as she pulled out the ‘gift’ in his hand.
With curiosity, she picked it up, unwrapping it slowly.
She was met with a portrait.
Not just any portrait.
The summer of 1741.
She was ten years old and her it was the first y/l/n family portrait since she was an infant.
Charlie wore his finest suit of greens and blues and y/n wore her pink dress with a gorgeous ribbon draped across it as she stood behind her father, sat in his chair; their mother next to him and Charlie behind.
Her curls were pulled into a low half up half down with a pink ribbon tied around as she grinned cheekily as the artist painted them.
She remembered the warning look that her father gave her 13 year old brother when he started complaining of his leg hurting.
Tumblr media
After her and Charlie changed and left london, she thought she had lost that portrait forever.
Now that it lay in her manicured hand, she nearly shed a tear as she looked up at Carlisle; a Samuel plastered on his face.
“Thank you Car. Really this means so much to me”
His eyes glanced at her lips before he started to lean down.
She was ready to give in but out of nowhere, he pulled himself back, clearing his throat.
“Merry Christmas y/n/n” he said and disappeared in a flash.
~
As y/n lay in her bed, her focus was on the two items next to eachother on her wall.
Gifted from her two lovers.

spop saturday
the prompt for this week was WIP it good, so here are my fav WIPs, including, for the bonus points, 1 that hasn't updated for 6 months or more :P
cougar by mxsinshine and raptorred - Catra is 38, single, and forced to mingle. She meets Adora but will she take a chance and open her life and heart to the young woman? Join them in this modern day romantic dramedy and watch these two navigate missed generational references, different life experiences, and the joys of parenthood. On Ao3 now. Rated E for mature audiences, viewer discretion is advised (you may laugh out loud, or at least we hope).
- love this, its amazing and i hope it gets more eventually :)
ice breakers (and history makers) by inbrightmoon - after a disaster debut into the competitive figure skating world, Adora’s lost her confidence, reputation, and most importantly, her passion. Adora is taking multiple steps to get it back, but when she realises she has to compete against her former teammate, Catra, Adora finds herself wondering whether her passion ever was ever really in skating at all.
-only one more chapter to go (unless the brainrot spreads XD) and its been a fantastic ride :)
polar night/midnight sun - by @lisra-writes - It's been almost a year since Adora left everything behind to take over a lonely house and a fishing boat in the north of Norway. It's not going very well. Suddenly, someone from the past makes her an offer, to help a young woman in deep trouble.
-can't wait to see where this goes, the girls both have issues to work through and the feelings starting to grow are gonna complicate their relationship as therapist and client
slipstream by @n7punk - Catra crashed and burned so hard in high school she’s pretty sure her old friends think she’s dead from how much of a ghost she is online and she’d like to keep it that way. Cybersecurity is only her day job, and though she convinced Entrapta that they should minimize the law-breaking to avoid getting caught, after Entrapta taught her everything she knew, Catra also started feeling the pull to commit those little breaches online that are technically felonies, but people should design their sites better if they want to keep her out. At least, that’s how she feels until she sees something she shouldn’t have and she’s forced back in connection with the high school “friend” she wants to see the least. She’s happy with Entrapta. She doesn’t need settled down straight girls and malicious hackers ruining her new life, but she can’t leave Adora vulnerable either when she’s so close to the scene of the crime with a kid in the picture that Catra has to make sure is safe. If the Feds ever do catch her, this should count towards community service. (The messiest hacker AU ever conceived, and also the single mom!Adora AU)
-i am loving this! hacker catra/entrapta is great and watching catra navigate her QPR with Entrapta while working through her feelings for Adora has been a blast. my favorite thing may be seeing catra's interactions with Adora's kid

the final day of the year.
was life good to me over these past twelve months? yes, because of her. she's been my everything since april 29, easily the best thing that happened to me in 2024, giving me some of the best days of my life. (italics represent my conflicting inner thoughts... on nye she's going out somewhere, and I'm an ocean away. she wants to give me everything I want, now that we're official, but will she resent me, with her sorta-domesticity-oriented feelings for me holding her back from her wild partygirl nature on a night like this? I'm out of practice with feeling comfortable in a relationship.) we should be kissing softly, stupid grins on our faces, when the clock hits midnight... dancing, reveling in the street, with snowflakes drifting down upon our shoulders... but the atlantic separates us; every minute that we're apart is excruciating.
do I have any resolutions for 2025? keep traveling; I spent 2024 scattered about in the US, canada, norway, (and sweden, even if just for a single sunny day in gothenburg); I'd like to add another new country to the list, maybe denmark or italy. I need to spend some time in a sauna. I'd love to go skiing in fresh snow. bigger biceps. tattoos. find a primary care physician. skinny-dipping. be able to wake up for morning sex. (goodbye to all of my retirement savings, but I may as well live life in its prime.)
anyway, a merry new year to all of my mutuals.

Hidden Gem Destinations: Exploring Lesser-Known Paradises Off the Beaten Path
Tumblr media
In an age when popular tourist destinations are often crowded, finding hidden gems off the beaten path offers a refreshing alternative for travellers seeking tranquillity, culture, and natural beauty. These lesser-known paradises provide an opportunity to connect with nature, experience unique local traditions, and avoid the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourism. Here are a few must-visit hidden gems worldwide that promise unforgettable adventures and peaceful escapes.
1. Lofoten Islands, Norway
Nestled within the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands offer some of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes. Picture rugged mountain peaks, pristine beaches, and quaint fishing villages, all under the vibrant Northern Lights or Midnight Sun, depending on the season. Lofoten’s charm lies in its raw beauty and relatively low tourist traffic, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Hikers will enjoy scenic trails like the Reinebringen, offering panoramic views over the islands, while fishermen can participate in traditional cod fishing. The Lofoten Islands also boast unique accommodations, like the traditional “rorbuer” fisherman’s cabins, providing an immersive experience in Norway’s coastal culture.
2. Chefchaouen, Morocco
Known as the “Blue Pearl” of Morocco, Chefchaouen is a city unlike any other. Hidden in the Rif Mountains, this picturesque town is famous for its blue-washed buildings and serene atmosphere. Unlike the bustling streets of Marrakech or Fez, Chefchaouen offers a more relaxed vibe, with winding alleys lined with artisan shops, local cafés, and vibrant markets. Here, you can explore traditional Moroccan handicrafts, like woven blankets, ceramics, and leather goods, or savor local delicacies like tagine and mint tea. Lush landscapes also surround the city and offers fantastic hiking trails, such as the one leading to the Akchour Waterfalls. Chefchaouen is a feast for the senses and an excellent spot for photographers and culture seekers.
3. Matera, Italy
Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southern Italy, is an ancient city with a unique charm. Known for its “Sassi” districts, where houses and churches are carved directly into limestone cliffs, Matera feels like a journey back in time. Visitors can explore ancient cave dwellings, historic churches, and stone-carved streets, many of which have been used as filming locations for historical movies. Matera’s history dates back thousands of years, offering a glimpse into Italy’s past, yet it remains relatively uncrowded compared to cities like Rome or Florence. The city also has cozy trattorias and boutique hotels nestled within cave structures, creating an unforgettable blend of history and modern luxury.
4. Sapa, Vietnam
Located in the northern mountains of Vietnam, Sapa is a hidden paradise for travelers interested in breathtaking scenery and vibrant local cultures. Known for its terraced rice fields and traditional villages, Sapa offers a unique view of rural life in Vietnam. The rice terraces are lovely in September, when they turn golden before the harvest. Sapa’s cool, misty climate and rich cultural heritage make it a fantastic retreat from the heat and busyness of urban Vietnam.

America’s Young Men Are Falling Behind (WSJ) In Spanish, parents call it encaminado: making sure your children are on the path to an independent adulthood. Out of Dan and Joana Moreno’s four grown kids, only their daughter is encaminada. She recently graduated from business school and got engaged. The Morenos’ three adult sons are still sleeping in their Miami childhood bedrooms. The younger two dropped out of college, and the oldest never went. All three are single. Their only work experience is with the family business. The life trajectories of America’s sons and daughters are diverging. Presented with a more-equal playing field, young women are seizing the opportunities in front of them, while young men are floundering. The phenomenon has developed over the past decade, but was supercharged by the pandemic, which derailed careers, schooling and isolated friends and families. The result has big implications for the economy. More women ages 25 to 34 have entered the workforce in recent years than ever. The share of young men in the labor market, meanwhile, hasn’t grown in a decade. Until the past decade or so, “there was an assumption that men just needed to show up for their life and they’ll get a job and have a family and be provided for, because they’re men,” says University of Maryland masculinity researcher Kevin M. Roy. That is no longer true. While women now expect to have more and better opportunities than their mothers and grandmothers, men are in some ways bracing for the opposite. Researchers say that has created a crisis of purpose, especially for men at the entrance to adulthood.
Some of the busiest U.S. ports are set to shut down (NYT) Dockworkers at every major port from Maine to Texas are likely to go on strike at midnight, unless their union and employers make a last-minute deal to resolve a monthslong standoff over wages, benefits and automation. The walkout, by members of the International Longshoremen’s Association, would cost the economy billions of dollars a day. More than half of the nation’s container imports and exports flow through the East and Gulf Coast ports. “Businesses have made preparations that should shield the economy from the blow of a short strike,” my colleague Peter Eavis, who reports on global logistics, told me. However, he added, if the ports are closed for longer than about two weeks, “the economic damage could become serious.”
How Helene swallowed one mountain town (Washington Post)  There was no worship service Sunday morning at the First Baptist Church in Swannanoa, N.C. But there were hugs in the parking lot and tears running down tired faces—and, importantly, food and water for anyone finally able to make their way out from the devastation that seems to have swallowed this mountain town. Just down the hill, and in every direction, lay almost indescribable scenes of destruction and suffering. Cars sat high in tree limbs by the Swannanoa River. Homes had been tossed and mangled, then deposited far from their foundations—sometimes upside down, sometimes torn in half—wherever the river left them. A thick layer of mud covered the town, leaving many roads impassible and many homes and businesses buried, like some modern-day Pompeii. “All these places are gone,” one resident said, describing one by one the multiple houses that had once lined the river, but which the river had carried away. “Unbelievable,” he said. “It’s been completely and entirely erased.”
Norway is mulling building a fence on its border with Russia, following Finland’s example (AP) Norway may put a fence along part or all of the 198-kilometer (123-mile) border it shares with Russia, a minister said, a move inspired by a similar project in its Nordic neighbor Finland. “A border fence is very interesting, not only because it can act as a deterrent but also because it contains sensors and technology that allow you to detect if people are moving close to the border,” Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl said in an interview with the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK published late Saturday. She said the Norwegian government is currently looking at “several measures” to beef up security on the border with Russia in the Arctic north, such as fencing, increasing the number of border staff or stepping up monitoring. Norway, a nation of 5.6 million, is a NATO member but isn’t part of the European Union. However, it belongs to the EU’s Schengen area, whose participants have abolished border controls at their mutual borders, guaranteeing free movement of citizens.
Austria’s Freedom Party secures first far-right national election win since World War II (AP) The Freedom Party secured the first far-right national parliamentary election victory in post-World War II Austria on Sunday, finishing ahead of the governing conservatives after tapping into anxieties about immigration, inflation, Ukraine and other issues. But its chances of governing were unclear. Preliminary official results showed the Freedom Party finishing first with 29.2% of the vote and Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s Austrian People’s Party was second with 26.5%. The center-left Social Democrats were in third place with 21%. Herbert Kickl, a former interior minister and longtime campaign strategist who has led the Freedom Party since 2021, wants to be chancellor. But to become Austria’s new leader, he would need a coalition partner to command a parliamentary majority. Rivals have said they won’t work with Kickl in government.
Ukraine’s artillery is helping boost Scranton’s economy (Washington Post) Before the artillery shells reach Ukrainian troops on the front lines of their war with Russia, they’re an economic boon in northeastern Pennsylvania. Since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the federal government has allocated nearly $175 billion in emergency assistance for the conflict. But much of that money remains in the United States: It powers plants like the Army’s factory in Scranton, which makes 155-millimeter artillery rounds, and others in Alabama, which make armored personnel carriers, and Texas, where mobile artillery rocket systems are built. General Dynamics, the contractor that runs the 116-year-old Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, has added more than 200 jobs in this region since 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine. Artillery production more than doubled, and the General Dynamics facilities in the region produce more than a third of the 155mm rounds the United States aims to send to the front lines each month.
Flooding deaths in Nepal reach 193 as recovery work is stepped up (AP) The number of people killed by flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the weekend in Nepal reached 193 while recovery and rescue work stepped up Monday. Many of the deaths were in the capital, Kathmandu, which got heavy rainfall, and much of southern part of the city was flooded. Police said in a statement that 31 people were still reported missing and 96 people were injured across the Himalayan nation.
Top Kashmir leader says India has silenced dissenting voices as region votes in final phase of polls (AP) Ahead of the final phase of a local election in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a key resistance leader says the regional polls to choose a local government will not resolve the decades-old conflict that is at the heart of a dispute between New Delhi and Pakistan. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has spent most of the last five years under house detention, said the polls are being held as political voices contesting India’s sovereignty over the region remain silenced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government stripped the region of its long-held semi-autonomy in 2019. The detained leader said in a phone interview with The Associated Press that the election, touted by the Modi government as a “ festival of democracy “ in the region, cannot be an alternative to resolving the dispute. Mirwaiz’s group believes only talks between India, Pakistan and the region’s people can end the conflict.
Israel’s escalating war in Lebanon brings calamity to a fragile state (Washington Post) Reports of new casualties streamed in across Lebanon on Sunday, from the south to the far north. Families displaced by Israeli strikes found shelter where they could. The gloomy capital smelled of sulfur and drones buzzed overhead, one resident wrote. “War is here, in every aspect of our lives,” Mona Fawaz, a professor at the American University of Beirut, said in her post on X, capturing the mood of a country used to uncertainty but now settling into dread. Israel’s escalating military offensive, including Friday’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah, has set off a sprawling humanitarian disaster here, with fears of a possible ground invasion still to come. After years of economic and political crisis, Lebanon now faces catastrophe. More than 1,000 people have been killed in the last two weeks and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. The hospitals are filled with the wounded and shelters are over capacity. With hardship deepening and relief in short supply, there are growing fears of unrest in a country that has never fully recovered from its civil war.
Israel begins ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon (AP) Israeli ground forces moved into southern Lebanon early Tuesday, marking a significant escalation of an offensive against Hezbollah militants and opening a new front in a yearlong war against its Iranian-backed adversaries. In a brief announcement, the Israeli military said it had begun “limited, localized and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. But throughout the evening, Israeli artillery units pounded targets in southern Lebanon and the sounds of airstrikes were heard throughout Beirut. The IDF reported heavy fighting in the border area.

Discovering Untouched Beauty: Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations for the Adventurous Spirit
In a world where popular tourist destinations are often crowded with visitors, the allure of untouched, lesser-known places calls to those who crave solitude and a deeper connection with nature. For adventure seekers, these hidden gems offer a chance to explore pristine landscapes, experience unique cultures, and create unforgettable memories away from the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourism. Here’s a guide to some of the most remarkable off-the-beaten-path destinations around the world that will satisfy your adventurous spirit.
Lofoten Islands, Norway
Nestled within the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands in Norway are a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Known for their dramatic peaks, sheltered bays, and stunning fjords, the islands offer a range of outdoor activities. Whether you’re kayaking through crystal-clear waters, hiking to the top of Reinebringen for panoramic views, or exploring traditional fishing villages, Lofoten promises an unforgettable experience. The unique natural phenomena, such as the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights, add to the allure, making this an ideal destination for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.
Svaneti, Georgia
High in the Caucasus Mountains, Svaneti is one of Georgia’s most remote and historically rich regions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famed for its medieval stone towers, picturesque villages, and rugged landscapes. The region is a trekker’s dream, offering trails that wind through pristine alpine meadows, past ancient fortresses, and up to breathtaking glaciers. The isolation of Svaneti has preserved its traditional way of life, giving visitors a rare opportunity to experience authentic Georgian culture. For those seeking a blend of adventure, history, and culture, Svaneti is a must-visit.
Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil
Imagine a desert with vast white dunes, but instead of barren dryness, freshwater lagoons appear between the dunes during the rainy season. This surreal landscape can be found in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil. Unlike any other place on Earth, the park offers a unique setting for adventure activities. Visitors can hike across the dunes, swim in the crystal-clear lagoons, or take a scenic flight over the stunning terrain. The shifting sands and ever-changing water levels create a dynamic environment that’s perfect for those looking to explore nature’s marvels.
Torres del Paine, Chile
While not entirely off the radar, Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile, remains relatively less crowded compared to other famous hiking destinations. The park’s striking granite towers, turquoise lakes, and sprawling glaciers make it a paradise for trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts. The W and O circuits offer challenging multi-day hikes that take you deep into the heart of Patagonia’s wilderness; for those who prefer a less strenuous experience, shorter day hikes, wildlife watching, and scenic drives provide ample opportunities to connect with this rugged landscape. The park’s remote location ensures that it remains a haven for those seeking adventure away from the masses.
Socotra, Yemen
Dubbed the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean,” Socotra is an archipelago that boasts some of the most unique flora and fauna on the planet. Located off the coast of Yemen, Socotra’s otherworldly landscapes include the dragon’s blood tree, which looks like it belongs on another planet. The island’s isolation has led to the evolution of species found nowhere else on Earth, making it a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Visitors can explore limestone caves, snorkel in pristine waters, and trek through the rugged interior to discover hidden gems that few have ever seen. Despite its remote location, Socotra’s natural beauty and biodiversity make it a once-in-a-lifetime destination for the intrepid traveler.
Faroe Islands, Denmark
The Faroe Islands, a remote archipelago in the North Atlantic, are a haven for those seeking rugged landscapes and unspoiled nature. With its cliffs, dramatic coastlines, and mist-covered mountains, the Faroe Islands offer some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. Outdoor activities abound, from hiking along cliffside trails to birdwatching in one of the world’s most important seabird colonies. The islands’ small villages, with their traditional grass-roofed houses, provide a glimpse into a more straightforward way of life. The Faroe Islands’ relative isolation means that even during peak tourist season, you’ll find plenty of solitude and opportunities for adventure.
Tsingy de Bemaraha, Madagascar
Madagascar is known for its unique biodiversity, but Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park stands out even in this extraordinary country. The park is home to a labyrinth of sharp limestone pinnacles known as stingy, which create a surreal and challenging environment for exploration. The adventurous can navigate the park’s narrow canyons, suspension bridges, and hidden caves, all while spotting rare species like the lemur. The Tsingy’s remote location and rugged terrain ensure that only the most determined travelers make it here, offering a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience.
The Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine
The Carpathian Mountains, spanning several Eastern European countries, offer some of the most pristine wilderness areas in Europe. Ukraine’s portion of the Carpathians is particularly remote, with vast forests, alpine meadows, and traditional villages largely untouched by modern development. The region is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching, with chances to spot bears, wolves, and lynxes in their natural habitat. For a cultural experience, visit the Hutsul people, an ethnic group known for their unique customs, crafts, and music. The Carpathians provide a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion, far from the crowded trails of Western Europe.
For those willing to venture off the beaten path, the world offers a wealth of hidden gems where nature reigns supreme and adventure awaits around every corner. From the icy peaks of the Lofoten Islands to the surreal landscapes of Madagascar, these destinations provide a chance to reconnect with the wild, experience diverse cultures, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Sleepy Polar Bear Image Wins Prestigious Wildlife Photo Award
An Image Captured off the Norwegian Archipelago of Svalbard Shows a Young Polar Bear Drifting to Sleep on a Small Iceberg After Carving a Bed in the Ice.

One of the world's most prestigious wildlife photography awards has announced its winner – and it's equal parts mesmerizing and adorable. The winner of the Natural History Museum of London's Wildlife Photographer of the Year award is Nima Sarikhani, for her captivating image of a polar bear sleeping on sea ice.
The photograph, called "Ice Bed," was captured in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, the museum says in its description of the photo. According to a news release, Sarikhani had spent three days looking for polar bears while aboard an exploration vessel in the area, but had been having no luck as they were immersed in a "thick fog."
But then, as the ship came across some sea ice, he saw it – two polar bears.
Those on board the ship tracked them for eight hours. And just before midnight, the moment that resonated with people worldwide finally happened.
"Under the light of the midnight sun, the bear used its powerful arms to claw out a bed on a small iceberg before drifting off to sleep," the press release from the museum says.
Sarikhani said in the release that he's honored to have won the People's Choice award, which is one of nearly 50,000 entries from 95 countries. It will be on display at the museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit through June 30.
"This photograph has stirred strong emotions in man of those have seen it," he said. "Whilst climate change is the biggest challenge we face, I hope that this photograph also inspires hope. There is still time to fix the mess we have caused."
Douglas Gurr, director of the Natural History Museum, said the "breathtaking and poignant image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet."
"His thought-provoking image is a stark reminder of the integral bond between an animal and its habitat," Gurr said, "and serves as a visual representation of the detrimental impacts of climate warming and habitat loss."
Polar bears are known to dig themselves spots to sleep in, which are sometimes referred to as "day beds," according to scientist Thea Bechshoft at Polar Bears International. They're also known to take one- to two-hour-long naps, "especially after a good meal," Bechshoft said.
According to the museum, the area in which the polar bear was captured on film is among "the most isolated in the world." That area of the Arctic Ocean holds 19 polar bear populations that rely on the sea ice to travel and hunt offshore.
But according to a 2018 report by the Norwegian Centre for Climate Services, air temperatures in Svalbard have increased by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the past 40 to 50 years, conditions that have resulted in heavy winter rainfall and in some areas being "ice free most of the year." Other areas have seen ice thickness and extent decrease "dramatically," the museum said of the report.
"The period with sea ice over shallower water in much of the area is now much shorter than it was a few decades ago," said Jon Aars, who researches polar bears in the region. "While the bears that follow sea ice may still be able to hunt year-round, this is increasingly over deeper waters which may be less productive."
Less sea ice for polar bears to use as a way to safely travel has also led to the animals having less genetic diversity, Aars said.
"There aren't as many opportunities for different groups to mix," he said. "This is leading to increased inbreeding among resident bears."
Svalbard's polar bear population is still considered to be stable, but as global temperatures continue to increase, that may not be the case for long.
