Hello! I may sound weird but nvm. I like your post and the way you explain everything. I used to ship NH and SS once, but after seeing the beauty of SNS. I dropped these ship.
So I saw a pro SS claiming that SNS is just like SS. They claimed if Sasuke trying to ki*lling Sakura is abuse then for Naruto is it love? They also claimed that SNS didn't happened because Sasuke needed to restore his clan. If they (sasu/naru) were married then Sasuke wouldn't have an Uchiha child.
Could you please say something about these?
I don't think it's weird, you have just matured and realized SS/NH isn't mutual love. It's not like you're the first one to do that either.
First of all the reason I'm anti-ss is not because they tried to kill each other. It's because Sasuke isn't interested in Sakura, period. He rejected all her romantic advances ever since the start, and in part 2 he saved Naruto over her and didn't care about her despite her desperate attempts to get his attention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sakura notices it herself.
Tumblr media
Here as well. She realizes it even more in this scene. But since she is stubborn, she refuses to give up.
Secondly, Sakura went to see Sasuke in order to assassinate him. But Sasuke realized what she was about to do. Cue this:
Tumblr media
She's literally like some fodder here. No emotional charge, nothing. Kishimoto would have never drawn a scene like this between Sasuke and Naruto, where Sasuke tries a sneak attack and chidori Naruto behind his back, because Naruto is actually important to Sasuke's character and Kishimoto cares about their relationship. Sasuke is always facing Naruto and both of them are on the same page when they fight. Because they are equals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it comes to Naruto, he tried to kill him because Naruto was the only person that made him feel like he wasn't alone. And he needed to be alone to become the Kage with no bonds. Sakura being around had no significance to Sasuke. Kishimoto stressed this so many times, as you can see above, because he wanted you to understand how much Naruto means to Sasuke. Not Sakura. But in the end Sasuke couldn't kill Naruto, because he loved him too much, and thus he accepted Naruto's love for him and submitted to it. Which is why he says he lost.
This is not even subtle, but you can't expect SS to understand something as simple as this, because they don't understand much anything about the story, which is proven by the fact they think Kishimoto actually likes SS and Sakura.

Sasuke is in a way, the hero of the series. Just maybe not from the ninja point of view. See, I was thinking and I realised, throughout the series we almost only ever see opinions about Sasuke from a ninja perspective.
For the regular people out there, Sasuke is a hero. By killing Orochimaru, he saved the lives of thousands of people across the continent. Slaves and prisoners, human experimentation victims, brainwashed child soldiers, all the kids who were kidnapped for their interesting abilities, and all the ninja working under him as the Sound Village. Orochimaru, in the anime at least, had essentially overthrown the leader of a small country and placed himself in charge. By killing him, Sasuke freed thousands from death, experimentation or simply a life lived in fear.
With Orochimaru's death all these people were free to return to their homes and communities or travel somewhere new. And as they moved on from all the different bases scattered around the elemental nations, these people would be spreading the story of how Uchiha Sasuke, who's still only a child, was the one to kill Orochimaru. That Sasuke, at only sixteen, was the one to save them from the madman terrorising their communities and country for years. While Konoha, who should have been responsible, did nothing. We even see Suigetsu encouraging the freed prisoners to spread the word “I have one favour to ask” “The one who defeated Orochimaru and gave us our freedom is Sasuke. When you're out, spread the word to everyone... A man has appeared who will bring peace and tranquility to this world”
Time and again, shinobi villages and their wars have destroyed the lives and homes of the civilians living in those areas, like we see in Rain. To these people Sasuke isn't a traitor or evil or lost to the darkness or whatever it is that the leaf people believe. He's a fellow victim of a shinobi system that does not care about the people who it hurts. His entire clan was massacred within the walls of the village and yet Konoha does not even bother to bring their killer to justice. Once he was outside their walls he was someone else's problem. Konoha failed Sasuke and the Uchiha and so Sasuke, despite still being a child, stepped up to do it himself.
And he did. Sasuke went above and beyond and as a teenager did what Konoha were seemingly incapable of (or just couldn't be bothered to do). Sasuke went against the ninja rules, left his fascist village, killed Orochimaru, got justice for his clan, killed the war hawk Danzo. He helped save the entire world. And throughout the entire thing he didn't kill a single civilian or child.
He's consistently shown that he values the lives of people above following the shinobi system. From most civilians point of view, Sasuke fights for the regular people of the world. And he's been doing so all along. Throughout his time with Orochimaru, Sasuke goes out of his way to avoid killing. The only person he is known to have killed in that entire time is Orochimaru himself. That sort of thing is going to be remembered.
Danzo, while few know the true extent of his crimes, is a known warmonger. He has a reputation as a heavily militaristic man and has been on Konoha's Council since the second shinobi war. He clearly spells bad news for the people who would be hit the worst by the effects of war. And again, Sasuke goes against the system and kills a man who has not only ruined thousands of lives already, but had just been put in a position to do even more damage.
Sasuke is literally known as one of the two people to have essentially saved the world! Naruto may be the hero of the shinobi world but Sasuke's the hero of everyone else.

sasuke was right about executing the kages cuz they're just military heads and serve no other purpose to the village other than being a supreme power that everyone aspires to become

it's interesting how even among Sasuke stans we have such diverging opinions. im ''pro-Sasuke'' but i certainly don't think he should have killed the Kages or destroyed Konoha. i certainly don't think that Naruto doesn't deserve him, or that team Taka is found family. now this is my understanding of Sasuke and it's not perfect, and here im only considering points of views not judging people.
but let’s assume Sasuke destroys the village and kills the Kages. then what? everyone's dead and then what? he accomplishes his revolution by becoming a ''god'' of the darkness and then what? well then Sasuke's alone, bearing an immense burden by himself, forever. it's not justice nor peace, it's violence against the world and against himself that doesn't solve anything, especially not for him. imo what's great about Sasuke is that he questions everything, and that he keeps growing throughout the manga, which are not things most other characters do. it's not his revenge that’s great - it's the feelings and questioning behind it. it’s his will to change the system, not his will to kill people. the more Sasuke embraced revenge (his fight with Danzo being the climax), the darker and crueler he became. so what's so great about Sasuke destroying Konoha, killing the Kages, getting rid of his bond with Naruto. the fact that the world would be ''in peace'' thanks to Sasuke's eternal suffering? thanks to him being a martyr, truly alone and miserable for the remainder of eternity? can he even bring peace to the world from such a dark and cruel place? i admire his seflessness, ambitions and wish for peace. but to me, there’s no peace until he’s at peace.
now i also don't really get the concept of being anti Naruto. i'm not saying Naruto is perfect (and this goes without saying but boruto is not canon so that’s not included), imo he lacks exactly what makes Sasuke so interesting which is critical thinking (or his critical thinking is just drowned in his toxic positivity and fear of being rejected). yet Naruto is the only remaining person who is alive whom Sasuke loves and who loves him back (however you want to understand that love), and the only remaining person who gets somewhat close to understanding him (imperfectly, obviously). i'm not gonna get into the fact that they have strong feelings for each other since this is the basic premise of the entire manga. so once again - Sasuke kills Naruto to be truly alone and rule the world from the darkness. then what? what's so great about being truly alone for the rest of his life exactly? how is it helping Sasuke to heal, grow, and find peace? or isn't it what you’d want for him - to be at peace at last? Shippuden’s ending should have been handled differently, i think there should have been a discussion between them about Konoha and about them either entirely reforming it together or leaving it together (but then it wouldn't be a shōnen anymore would it). but either way does Naruto's will to ''bring Sasuke back to Konoha'' means that Naruto is bad for Sasuke? (especially considering that Naruto is willing to wait for Sasuke, and to have him living out of the village i believe. again post chp698 is trash). Naruto simply doesn't want Sasuke to be alone, that's it. and about Konoha, i think that Naruto would naturally become more critical / honest with himself once reunited with Sasuke - once he can feel safe and loved and let go of his fear of rejection and thus of his illusions. Naruto and Sasuke learn and grow by being with each other, as the manga repeatedly shows. i think Naruto is actually the only person who can help Sasuke find peace, because he is the only person and the only thing left in the world whom Sasuke cares about. Naruto is also the only person left who truly cares about Sasuke. i believe that Sasuke deserves to feel loved, and to love in return (again, however you wish to interpret that love), which is obviously only possible with Naruto at that stage. sure it's an imperfect love but from both sides it is a selfless, deep, understanding love - unlike what Sakura, Karin or Hinata would have to offer. Naruto never went after Sasuke for himself, he went after him at the risk of losing everything he ever dreamed of (recognition from his village, friends, Hokage title etc in Konoha) precisely because he couldn't stand the thought of Sasuke suffering on his own. simply because of that. Sakura's actions on the other hand were motivated by her suffering which had nothing to do with Sasuke's. and Karin...
which brings me to team Taka. Sasuke freed Jūgo and Suigetsu (among many other people), so it's understandable they would feel grateful, and their connection to Orochimaru also brings them closer. yet Sasuke used them as tools to obtain power, he never considered them friends. again this is just the narrative itself but Sasuke said countless times that he had only one remaining bond and we all know who that is. i would have liked for them to be friends tbh, but at that point in Sasuke's character development he was way too focused on revenge to care about anything else. i'm not saying he didn't care at all – again Sasuke is a deeply caring and loving person, so yes he cares a minimum. but at this point he only thinks of his goal and never forgets about it for one second, and he willingly chooses to surround himself with people who are not likely to make him forget about it either (again, we know who is the only person likely to make him forget about his revenge, or even to become more important than his revenge). Taka are together as a team to cooperate, not to become friends. for all he knew, Sasuke left Jūgo and Suigetsu for dead at the Kage summit. for all he knew, he killed Karin when killing Danzō. (yet when he reunites with Naruto during the war shortly after, he keeps protecting and saving him even when Naruto tells him to protect other people instead. they also immediately fight together in perfect harmony. and get soulmate tattoos. just the narrative) and Karin oh Karin. SasuKarin has to be one of the ships i find the most disturbing (no hate though, it’s just very ooc). first of all, she wasn't a prisoner like Suigetsu and Jūgo and she decided to follow Sasuke with very questionable intentions in mind. even after he sacrificed her she kept being obsessed with him for absolutely no other reason than his looks/chakra. Karin can be an interesting character (an Uzumaki at that) but we never see them bonding over their past experiences or shared feelings or whatnot because there is simply nothing between them. indeed all there is to their relationship is Karin’s powers being useful to Sasuke, and Sasuke’s looks/chakra being attractive to Karin. well more accurately, Karin being SO infatuated with his looks/chakra that she constantly harasses him while completely ignoring his feelings. he keeps telling her to back off, or looks really displeased/freaked out as she touches him (again i can't help mentioning how this is also how he reacts to Sakura touching him but certainly not how he reacts to Naruto touching him), yet she simply doesn’t care. she does not know nor try to know his feelings and thoughts, indeed they never have any meaningful talk. she simply keeps behaving like a creep whose intentions are explicitly s*xual. so it is true that i sometimes wonder how it could be possible to be anti Jiraiya for instance but then to suddenly accept Karin’s behavior.
then there’s Madara. again you stan who you want – no hate. it’s not even that i deeply care about him, but it seems that Sasuke tends to be associated with him somehow. it puzzles me a little bit considering that Madara/Obito helped Itachi kill the clan Sasuke so dearly cared about. so being ''pro Uchiha'' by being ''pro Madara'' is not something i understand either (being ''pro Uchiha'' is very unclear in itself) considering that he really didn't mind helping Itachi kill his own clan. that was not very pro Uchiha of him. so yes Sasuke and Madara both want to change the system, but certainly not in the same way. Sasuke was under Madara's influence for a little while but ultimately went against him. Madara is an interesting character alright, but he's mostly just killing everyone around him indiscriminately. Uchihas, Jinchūriki, and pretty much anyone who disagrees with him - you name them, he kills them all. certainly not what Sasuke wants to do. Sasuke asks questions, takes time to think, to observe, and actually avoids killing people as much as he can (the samurais at the Kage summit being the only exception, emphasizing the climax of his descent into darkness at that point). Sasuke wants to change the system, out of love. Madara wants to control the system, rather out of arrogance imo. he thinks he knows better than everyone and is better than everyone, and tellingly plans a revolution in which you either agree with his plan or die. he's not acting out of love at all at that point. is it so much better than Konoha, i wonder. and if one condemns Itachi for his crimes (understandably), then how can one not condemn Madara, i wonder also. plus Sasuke is a teenager, he's figuring out his identity and values and gets easily influenced at times. Madara is a grandpa who's had a lot of time to figure that out already.
anyway thanks for reading. we have different points of view and thanks to everyone sharing their thoughts on here, i thought a lot too. you might feel attacked or offended by my post (hopefully no) but it’s absolutely not my goal, this is not a hate post. i just wanted to contribute to the debate, and im open to respectful and meaningful dialogue. you are free to think whatever you want about Naruto, obviously. i guess maybe i just don't want Sasuke to be a martyr nor a tyrant, and maybe also Sasuke is gay.

I am a Sasuke stan first and a human second, but ffs some of the pro Sasuke people on this blog (and tumblr in general) have some of the WORST anti SNS takes I have ever seen. The things you hate Naruto for are legit head canons at this point, and you demonize SNS to the point that it sounds like you straight did not read the manga.
Listen it will ALWAYS be fuck konoha, fuck the shinobi system, fuck the naruto ending for acting like Sasuke was just crazy, fuck sasukes character conclusion that made him a good konoha puppy and belittled his justified rage, fuck the narrative for painting the uchiha as monsters. I am WITH yall on that. But you guys put so much shit on Naruto that he never did, or make his words and actions so wildly bad faith that it's barely canon.
"Naruto said he would rip Sasukes limbs off to keep him in Konoha!" Because he was joining orochimaru? Naruto specifically said those things in regards to Sasuke joining Orochimaru because he was scared Orochimaru was going to treat him like an experiment, which he literally DOES. Naruto SAYS that Orochimaru is just going to use his body and kill him. Naruto is SCARED for Sasuke and doesn't want him to sacrifice himself. Sure it was extreme, but are yall legit mad that Naruto went a little crazy at the prospect of Sasuke joining infamous child experimenter and torturer Orochimaru? That's a fucking normal reaction?
"Naruto never cared about Sasuke's goals! He just wanted to win him back like a trophy!" Naruto doesnt know the truth for the first half of the story, he wants Sasuke back in Konoha because Sasuke is in DANGER as a rogue. Do you forget that defector shinobi have hits out on them and the villages want them dead? He never "shoots down" Sasuke's goals he just doesnt want Sasuke to be a TERRORIST, which like, i fully support Sasuke's tits out terrorism era but thats not an abusive mindset for Naruto to have? Naruto is the one who plans and leaves Konoha to kill Itachi (which, yeah that was Sasuke's business, but he wasn't brushing off Sasuke's revenge like kakashi was). He chews Itachi out to his face for treating Sasuke like shit despite knowing that Itachi could turn him into creamed corn. When he learns the truth after the Kage summit he tells Sasuke that he understands why he has done everything. He! Is! The! Only! Character! To explicitly validate and empathize with Sasuke over his actions up until that point! He is the only one to say that Sasuke isn't being out of pocket for what he has done! He is the only character to suggest Sasuke's feelings and actions are justified! Sasuke is the one who immediately tells him to get fucked, Naruto doesn't even tell him to stop or anything. Naruto is also WILLING TO GIVE HIS DREAMS UP and die with Sasuke, and he ONLY SAYS that they will have to fight to the death if Sasuke attacks Konoha. He wasn't trying to fight Sasuke to bring him back, he just wanted to protect his home (and the completely innocent people inside). Kakashi and Sakura BOTH try to kill Sasuke and he stops them both. Kakashi and Sakura BOTH tell Naruto that this "isn't the same Sasuke he's a monster now :(" and Naruto says no fuck that. Naruto is the only character to consistently see Sasuke's heart, to see that Sasuke isn't evil or unhinged he's just HURTING and angry. Isn't that what yall Sasuke stans (myself included ig) preach constantly? Naruto is the one that is enraged when Orochimaru calls Sasuke "his" and begs for his life on his knees to the Raikage, swearing that Sasuke isn't corrupt. Naruto is the only character that consistently humanizes and sees the good in Sasuke while the rest of Konoha and co calls for his death and writes him off as crazy. When the rest of team seven is like wow sasuke ur a piece of shit now Naruto is the one who says to his face that he still cares about him and is happy to know him. Even if he is preachy sometimes, he at least TRIES to relate to and understand Sasuke.
"But the curse of hatred" Naruto REJECTS that? When the sage compares them to Indra and Ashura, Naruto refuses the comparison. He doesn't agree with that or view Sasuke that way, that's a flaw in the themes of the manga as a whole, not Naruto's treatment of Sasuke. Plus he doesnt hold that against Obito either? He never sees the Uchiha as a bunch of monsters. After their final battle Sasuke says he lost and Naruto YELLS AT HIM that it isn't about winning or losing. When Sasuke says that his death will end the curse of hatred Naruto YELLS AGAIN that he's wrong and gets mad Sasuke would even suggest dying! Naruto never viewed this as beating Sasuke into submission, he never viewed it as an ideological battle, he never viewed it as dominating Sasuke. He ALWAYS saw them as equals!
"But he sweeps Sasuke under the rug and doesn't change the shinobi system" when they are bleeding out Naruto TELLS Sasuke he wants to change things and WANTS SASUKE TO WORK WITH HIM. TWICE. Kishimoto didn't write anything else, it immediately time skips, it's not his (or narutos) fault that Boruto is a piss poor cash grab with no integrity. Naruto's intentions at the end of the manga are ABSOLUTELY to work with Sasuke and change the system. Again, Naruto DIDNT SEE the final battle as him beating Sasuke.
"But Naruto kept trying to stop sasuke and bring him back to konoha!" because Sasukes path was self destructive and he didn't always do or want the right thing (capturing Bee, killing Karin, wanting to kill innocent Kage like Mei who was a revolutionary of her own right). Justified or not, even Sasuke knows his isolation was self destructive. Naruto and Sasuke could feel each others pain, they knew each others hearts, that's CANON, and that's why Naruto wanted to stop Sasuke so much, because he knew his heart, he knew that his path was causing him pain, he knew that Sasuke never REALLY wanted to be alone, it was just a destructive means to forge his own strength! He wasnt "saving" him for selfish reasons, even Sasuke admits that Naruto saved him from loneliness! And Sasuke deserves that after losing everyone he has ever loved, he doesnt deserve to feel lonely and isolated and ostracized anymore! At that point Naruto is the savior of the village, friends with all the rookies, friends w Kurama and Gaara and Bee, Hinata loves him, he isn't saving Sasuke for his OWN loneliness anymore. Sasuke is his closest person and he legit LOVES him and can't bear watching him suffer. Don't forget by the end Sasuke himself is determined to protect and even lead Konoha as a concept again, he just wants to start over bc its too corrupt. Naruto wasn't forcing him back at that point, he was trying to stop Sasuke from killing people who didn't deserve to die and succumbing to more isolation.
Man hate SNS and Naruto all you want, idc, but I'm so tired of the spewing "Naruto only saw Sasuke as an object, he only wanted him as an ego boost, he just wanted to bring Sasuke back for his own gain" because it's so unbelievably not canon. You guys whine and cry about shippers making everything shippy, but yall will shit over this manga and character at length just to hate on a ship no matter how hard u twist canon. And don't get me wrong! There are lots of things Naruto does that I hate (like his entire non reaction to konoha ordering a genocide). But I swear some of yall do the MOST.
This confession was too long to add in like the usual ones.

Alright, so, after listening to Radical Face's Always Gold again, I have proposed to some people the idea of a role swap AU of Shizuki and Kagemaru. I have feelings about this now and want to explain it.
Keep in mind this isn't thought all the way through and I would love contributions.
Spoilers ahead for both Shizuki's and Kagemaru's books, and a few misc spoilers for other books (Koga and Toichiro come to mind) and As the Leaves Turn Gold.
:readmore:
How it all begins:
Kage is more shaken by his parents' death than he lets on. Sure death isn't uncommon, especially in the Senkitai, but just...taken down by humans? Just like that? He can't wrap his head around it. In his mourning, he can't help but feel isolated from the rest of the Senkitai, because they just don't get it.
What's worse, recently, he's been noticing that Shizuki seems...distant. They still pull their pranks together and everything, but something feels off, and he doesn't like it. He knows Shizuki so well, so why can't he figure this out?
It's Keijiro. Because of course it is. He's trying to drive them apart. Also why did tumblr have to take out the strikethrough feature.
Cut to the night of the raid on the kitsune village. Kagemaru recognizes what a big task Shizuki's been given, taking out the village head, and decides his best course of action is to help his adopted brother. They're supposed to be the strongest together, and maybe this will set things right.
But when Shizuki fails, he manages to make his escape. He doesn't realize until it's too late that he left Kage behind, bc he didn't know Kage was with him.
And now Kage has to pay the price of the attack.
Kagemaru:
To be fair, he doesn't go down without a fight. He refuses to just accept his execution laying down. And that fiery spirit catches the attention of Toichiro.
He knows the Senkitai won't take him back. Even if Shizuki comes back for him (and he doesn't, and it throws Kagemaru into even more confusion and heartbreak), being captured and detained just will serve as proof that he's not cut out of the same cloth as his father, to whom this would never happen. But his dying feels so pointless.
When Toichiro suggests he wants Kagemaru to be his valet, he's completely thrown for a loop. Why should he wait hand and foot on this little kitsune runt?! But, maybe...if he brings back the head of the kitsune village leader, either future or present...maybe he can rejoin Shizuki and continue where they left off.
He has to catch the village off guard, though, and that's not happening anytime soon. So he'll play along, bide his time, earn their trust...but he will complain very vocally about it thre whole time.
Slowly, though, things shift. A kyubi is no weakling, after all-just a shame his last tail is sealed. But more than that, Kagemaru finds himself wanting to see how Toichiro plans to succeed where Keijiro failed, especially taking such a different path. They also share a tendency for trickery, and a belief in huh humans being inferior to ayakashi.
Kagemaru also eventually figures out about the marionette charm, and suspects Keijiro's foul play and killing his parents. Words cannot describe his anger. But the old fox is dead now, so there's nothing he can do about it.
When it comes to their time with Teach'...Koga and Kage just fundamentally can't get along. It never works. Koga is too pro-human, and Kage doesn't understand the distress he causes saying he wants to see the oni's carnage form. But! When Koga and Toichiro are going at it, occasionally Kage will side with Koga, just to be a little shit. This continues into adulthood, and everyone just has to accept that he does his own thing regardless of his loyalty.
Likewise, he wants to fight Kuya, too. Poor boy doesn't get much rest between three hot-head housemates.
As adults...he performs his role as valet well enough, abet with a lot of commentary about what a pain it is sometimes. He still calls Toro a 'runt' and 'brat'. Toichiro pretends not to hear him.
When the two of them aren't in a constant sass-off, they're enabling each other. Worst of all is when one challenges/dares the other to do something. It's like they're still teens or something. Maturity goes out the window. Koga has to step in sometimes, but they manage to maintain things just enough for Toichiro to pass as a respectable aristocrat. Held together by Kagemaru's strings.
Sadly, there is no Yuzuru, but Kage is still fond of women's clothes and will treat himself on occasion. He and Toichiro have toyed with the idea of one day pretending Kage is his mysterious fiancee, just to see everyone's reactions.
--
That's all I can squeeze in before work, but expect Shizuki tonight hopefully. Keep an eye on this post as it will be a reblog.

I haven't done this in awhile!
May I introduce my MHA OC Mamoru Henkan! After Class 1-A becomes class 2-A (with Shinso) Henkan tried out and it acepted to UA. He instantly makes friends with Kage, Gara, and one other in 1-A taught by Eight Legged Hero: Jumper, also known as Tobu Kyatchā. Together they go through training in hopes to become pro heroes, sometimes training with class 2-A and their grumpy teacher, Erasure Head.
Henkan is easy going and along with the other member of their friend group, helps Kage and Gara calm down.
Henkan's Quirk is Weapon Transformation, he can turn his whole body, but most notably his arms, into anything that is considered a weapon. Now it only takes one person, that isn't him, to consider something a weapon. The catch? Being a transformation type quirk, he has a limited time he can use his quirk. He can turn into explosives, but it takes more time off of his limit. It is extremely painful to go over this limit.

Yep.
It's interesting to see how Kishi chooses the two most emotionally repressed characters, and well established at that, to tell Naruto and Sasuke about how much Sakura loved them and both were wrong about Sasuke and Naruto's own feelings and how. Lol.
I.e. Sai to Naruto and Kakashi to Sasuke.
It was a very conscious choice made by Kishimoto to make Sai admonish Sakura. Sai thought Naruto was in love with her and going all out to protect Sasuke because of the promise he made her in part one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sai not only is a person who is shaped by his trauma of being an orphan who grew up in the system with a curse mark on his tongue and an environment (Root) completely devoid of emotional comprehension or expression, he also admits he doesn't know what really transpired between Sasuke and Naruto or the reason that led Sakura ask Naruto to bring Sasuke back. The only reason Sakura asked Naruto to bring back Sasuke was because she couldn't and she obviously knew they were especially close, so if anyone would be capable of convincing Sasuke, it would be Naruto. No one else.
Tumblr media
But Sai doesn't know all this because he wasn't there at the time. Sakura comes off as really delusional and self absorbed here, thinking it was because of her promise that Naruto was so determined. As if she didn't know how much closer Naruto was to Sasuke than her. Lol. By the time she even arrived at the gates to extract this promise from Naruto, he had already pro actively assembled the Sasuke retrieval team with the help of Shikamaru. Sai says Sakura didn't talk about what really happened, like her tongue was sealed, so he admits that his knowledge about that event is very limited. But Sai only thinks that it's because of Sakura that Naruto is going to such lengths to save Sasuke, is because Naruto keeps using it as an excuse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sai thinks Naruto likes Sakura because that's what he learnt from the self help books he reads; because Naruto smiles around Sakura. Well he is just a smiley person, and well he smiles a hell lot around Sasuke as well.
Notice how Naruto is completely flabbergasted at Sai's observation that Naruto likes Sakura. But when he says - "How can I? I couldn't even keep my promise to her", we don't see his face, expression, we see the back of his head in a large panel. A very deliberate choice by Kishimoto. Naruto at this point of time, is definitely aware of his special feelings for Sasuke, even if he is still not ready to acknowledge it. He says - "I can't even keep my promises." What he really means is that he couldn't save Sasuke. But he is not ready to acknowledge yet that it's HIS wish and his wish alone to protect Sasuke. It has nothing to do with Sakura and he knows this in his heart. That's why vote one happened. If he acknowledges that it's HIM who wants to 'save Sasuke', he will also have to answer why he wants to go to SUCH lengths to save Sasuke, what does it imply and what does it mean about his own self? Does he like a boy? All these feelings are for Sasuke? A boy?
It was easier for him to keep pretending it was a promise made to Sakura who was a girl, his team mate and also quite invested in Sasuke, just like he was. He suffers from comphet but Kage arc changed that. He HAS TO FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGE that it was really HIM all along, and his crush on Sakura was a cover up to cover up his feelings for Sasuke.
Naruto clearly never loved Sakura, he loved Sasuke. But he is closeted, so he keeps using that cover to keep denying his feelings for Sasuke to himself.
Which is why this panel here makes sense.
Tumblr media
After receiving the news that Sasuke is being hunted by the raikage, he becomes so agitated and triggered, he decides to talk to him face to face, against other people's advice. He has been going through the motions anyway throughout Shippuden before this, thinking, worrying, introspecting. But this is where he has had enough.
So this panel here is not just him telling Sakura that she is lying to herself (when she says she doesn't like Sasuke anymore because he is a criminal and that she loves Naruto now 🙄, she really thought Naruto would fall for it, lol, like Kishi has depicted over and over again, that she isn't as smart as she thinks she is, lmao), but he has also realized that he had been lying to himself as well regarding the matter. That his reason to protect Sasuke had everything to do with himself and not about Sakura at all. Which is why he finally admits to this :
Tumblr media
Of course it's a little indirect, but Kishi is indirect when it comes to SNS, because he cannot be explicit about it. But everything makes sense only when you interpret it this way. Once you see through Kishi's clever storytelling tools, you begin to see how he hid the real motivations and feelings of Naruto (and his closeted gayness) behind narrative smokescreens and humorous facades.
And then what happens at the end of kage arc? This.
Tumblr media
Naruto is done lying to himself about his motivations. He tells Sasuke that he will bear the burden of his hatred and die with him, fuck the hokage dream, fuck being alive, nothing matters if Sasuke isn't with him. Nothing. This is Naruto telling how much he loves him in a way, which is why Sasuke stays to listen to Naruto and agrees to his proposition to battle with him instead of attacking Konoha.
Same with Kakashi. Sakura again confesses to Sasuke at an inappropriate time, because she felt ignored by him throughout the war arc, obviously thinking only of herself and comparing Sasuke's goals and motivations to his (non existent) feelings for her 😒, and Sasuke puts her in her place.
Tumblr media
This leads to Kakashi trying to justify Sakura's actions and Sasuke tells him what's what. Kakashi really isn't able to tell what triggers Sakura to confess to him. She clearly tried to show off to Sasuke like some damsel in distress, to pathetically try and get his attention throughout the arc, but all in vain, Sasuke didn't even glance at her. And she gets really really mad. At this juncture where Naruto and Sasuke are going to battle where it's more than possible that either Sasuke or both will die, she decides to confess again. Just like Hinata in Pein arc.
And how does she confess? By looking at Sasuke like she does when she attacks a villain, enraged and violent. Some love, lol. Sasuke is a status symbol for her, something to keep as a trophy, always was. And Sasuke knows this about her. Is it any wonder he doesn't like or respect her? But obviously, Kakashi couldn't tell.
Tumblr media
Kakashi really doesn't understand the intricacies of emotions and feelings, his personality and disposition is shaped around his father's unfortunate death which leads him to believe that emotions put you at a disadvantage in the world they live in. He is a stickler for rules and regulations because the dystopian world he lives in wouldn't be able to function if shinobis were motivated by emotions and not military orders from the higher up. He is a true believer of this world's cruel system, and even though Obito shows him otherwise, which in turn changes Kakashi's priorities of choosing the village over friends, he still chooses to dismiss and then kill Sasuke, a dear comrade, without even attempting to know his feelings and grievances, which are substantial, in fact, substantial would be an understatement. Add to this, Kakashi's guilt about the love triangle with his own original team, the way Rin died who loved him and not Obito, who loved her. A character's motivation and intent can be gleaned given his past that has been established mindfully by the author. Kakashi is consistently shown as a person who struggles with expressing or exhibiting emotions, his personality is decidedly stoic, which makes sense given his past.
Sasuke clearly tells him that Sakura has no reason to love him, and he has none to love her. And he is right, because Sakura clearly doesn't get anything about him or his motivations and he knows for a fact that she just doesn't have the qualities that he appreciates in people, exemplified by Naruto.
He says to Sasuke to guilt him- "She who you came close to killing once."
Really Kakashi? SHE was the one to attack him first. Plus she was obviously trying to manipulate him, and on top of that, she condescended to him, thinking Sasuke wouldn't be able to recognise her stupid ass plan for what it was, lol, and all this after she tried to manipulate Naruto and drugging the rest of the team. She totally deserved what she got.
Oh Kakashi. You are good at battles and strategies, but this ain't your strong suit.
It's also very funny that Sasuke says to him - "You want me to play at romance?", which is a clear dig at Kakashi's favourite hobby. Icha Icha novels. Cheap pulp fictiony x-rated romance. Lolol. Kakashi's understanding of 'love' is obviously very surface level that comes from cheap romance books and his own emotional repression clearly puts him at a disadvantage at understanding emotional nuances. So he thinks Sakura loves him and suffers from loving him. (And yet he believed Sasuke and Naruto were just rivals, lol) Also who asked her to suffer? Given Sasuke always, Always, clearly told her in as many words that he just wasn't interested in her or her feelings for him. But well, Kakashi isn't very perceptive when it comes to emotions. He clearly doesn't understand Sasuke, Sakura or Naruto. Naruto rejected his advice, so did Sasuke, on multiple occasions. And Sakura, well Kakashi always treated her with kid gloves because she was a girl, at least in part one. Not the smartest move.
So yes, it's not a coincidence that Kishi chose these two characters who were clearly established to not be emotionally perceptive, to be cupids for Sasuke and Sakura and Naruto and Sakura.
And so sad that Sakura is rejected by both so brutally. Well, Sasuke more than Naruto, but still. Hehehe. Kishi just doesn't like her man, like it's personal for him. Lolol.
Kishi made Sai and Kakashi tell Naruto and Sasuke of Sakura's love and both times, Sakura was rejected by the boys. And for good reasons too. And in both cases, Naruto and Sasuke obviously came off as the reliable ones, someone whose word you would trust instead of trusting Kakashi's or Sai's for reasons that were already established by Kishi.
Yeah, Kishi is a smart writer. Visual language and narrative is about showing, not telling. And show he does. Show. He. Does.

Note
If you think about it,, 'Kage's the strongest non-major character in bnha. He's third?? So can beat anyone who isn't a pro or the main 3 dudes. Gives me hope.
i’ve been saying this ever since the sports fesitvale arc and all throughout the series i’m like “yo... if tokoyami were here this fight would be over in three seconds” (COUGHS that whole stain fight which. literally took place at night)
