The only thing you knew was space. The Final Frontier. The empty, black field of infinite curiosity and possibilities. You sat in the large window space at the back of your Lunar Lander 5000, back pressed against the curved frame and knees curled to your chest, reading a book. You swiped the holographic page to the left as your eyes scanned the page and soaked up every word there, detailing how the prince professed his love to the main character.

You were shaken from your thoughts when footsteps thumped across the deck towards you. You glanced up to be met with the glittering dark eyes of your own prince. Choi Yeonjun gave you a soft smile as he neared. As you took in the muscled young man who you had fallen head over space-boots-clad heels with, you wondered how you had managed to get him to follow you to the ends of the universe. You were supposed to be enemies, after all... And truthfully, you were only human compared to his likes.

Yeonjun raked a hand through his cropped hair dyed as dark as the world beyond the window. He yawned, settling on the floor under you, leaning his head back to rest against your thigh. "We'll reach Planet PS205 in a few hours."

Thanks to long nights of research, you remembered everything you had ever seen or learned about Planet PS205. It was nicknamed "The Oasis Planet" because of the pacifists inhabiting its surface, as well as its crystalline oceans and tropical environments. The two of you had decided on the Oasis planet in order to escape your Earth and Titan comrades, because it seemed like the perfect place to escape your pasts and create a brand new future together.

You powered your Holo-Nook off with a tap of your finger and ran your hand through his hair lazily. "I could have navigated, too, you know. You were over there for a really long time."

Titans needed less sleep, food, and water than humans did, and you were fully aware of that. You simply worried about him. He always seemed to want to play knight in shining armor when it concerned you.

"Mm," he hummed, his eyes drifting closed, "I can't think while you're doing that, star girl."

You smiled from the feeling of butterflies in your stomach. "That's the point, dummy. I'm trying to get you to let me do the work next time."

"Not a—"

The Lunar Lander lurched and almost launched you across the ship if Yeonjun's head hadn't been holding you down. Yeonjun was on his feet in less than a blink, his body shielding you. You peered out the window next to you, but you could see nothing but an expanse of diamonds and obsidian.

Another impact rocked the ship and Yeonjun's expression morphed into one of mild concern. He turned to you and leaned down to press a kiss to your mouth. "Stay here, 'kay? You have your pistol?"

You patted the gun at your side made of lightweight vibranium and moonstone—the only combination of metal that could withstand the pressure and strength of the microscopic star that powered it. Yeonjun nodded and hurried down the stairs to the lower deck; you were left alone.

Suddenly, the ship you called home for five years seemed less familiar. Every sound made you start and you strained to hear if Yeonjun had found something. You unhooked the pistol from your belt and held it out in front of you at the pilot's deck illuminated with bulbs of concentrated sunlight.

You stood from the window sill and stepped toward the stairs. "Jjun?" You called out.

Nothing.

You descended the stairs down to the lower deck step by step. The motion detector lights blinked on as you stepped on each plate of steel. The lower deck was a maze of congested corridors with an abundance of places to hide, but you weren't trying to go in blind.

You know this place, you scolded herself. You know it like the back of your hand.

A shiver spider-crawled down your spine as you took tentative steps deeper into the ship. "Yeonjun?" You called out once again. You neared a corner and slammed head-first into a hard chest.

It was Yeonjun. He took one look at you, paled, then peered behind him over his shoulder. He suddenly scooped you up into his arms as if you weighed nothing at all and took off back the way you had come.

"Jjun! What the hell is going—"

"They're here," he breathed and shot up the stairs three-by-three. He set you down on the pilot's deck and bolted for the ship's controls. "Lunar Lander," he commanded, "put the ship on lockdown."

"Yeonjun, who's here?" You asked, watching the stairs disappear under a panel of steel. You rushed to the side panel on the wall next to you and swiped through the x-ray scanning of the ship's innards. "No one else is on the ship."

Yeonjun turned to you, but something behind you made his eyes go wide as saucers. You whirled around, only to find that the once empty window now framed both of your perfect nightmares: a whole fleet of Titan fighter jets, three ships deep, surrounding your puny Lunar Lander. Their crisp, white shells and glossy finish gleamed with the vibrant lights of the surrounding galaxies.

Your heart leapt into your throat. The Titans found you.

"High Prince Choi Yeonjun—stand down," ordered a solo jet at the front of the fleet, "or the girl will die." The voice boomed throughout the pilot deck and reverberated through your bones. You recognized that voice. You once trusted that voice—found comfort in it.

A hand intertwined with yours and you glanced up to find the High Prince standing beside you again. He threw his shoulders back and tilted his head up, regale spilling off him in waves. He was the spitting image of his father in such a pose.

You knew what he was going to do. And… just this once… you wanted to be selfish. "Jjunie—"

"I have to go, star girl," he murmured, his voice barely audible. He connected gazes with you and he lifted his hand up to your face to caress your cheek with his thumb. "They'll kill you if I don't."

"They're going to hurt you." Your voice broke and you swore you saw something gleam in his dark eyes. "Yeonjun, we can fight this. We have my galaxy jumper. We'll find a new planet, a new—"

His thumb stopped on your cheek then gently swiped away a tear. "Then what? They'll just find us again and again."

He stepped away from you, putting an ample amount of distance between you and him.

Your lips parted, and you couldn't tell if the rate at which your heart sped up was from fear, shock, or both. "Yeonjun. You're just going to give up?"

"Can you break up faster?" Drawled the pilot in the front solo jet. In the pilot's cockpit sat second prince Choi Soobin. He yawned. "Stars, this is like watching one of those stupid Earthan soap operas."

"Oh, shut up, you backstabbing son of a—"

The jet fired a single beam of silver light and the Lunar Lander lurched once more as if it was an earthquake on Earth. "There's more where that came from, lovebirds. Clock's ticking, hyung."

Yeonjun bared his teeth at the window and his hand hovered over the pistol strapped to his belt. He took it out and twirled it in his palm, the way he did to fidget. Your heart rocketed and you thought for a split second he would turn up the power to max and blast the window…

Instead, he slowly turned the barrel to aim at you. Your heart stopped.

Tension pulled at his muscles and he looked about ready to cry. Titans didn't cry. "Yn, you won't stop me from leaving. You're not going to come after me. You're going to go on with your two hundred more years of life on whatever planet you so choose. I love you, star girl, but you need to forget me."

And then your eyes caught the subtle movement of his thumb grazing the settings on the pistol. Your eyes widened. "YEONJUN PLEASE—"

You started to duck, but Yeonjun was quicker. He fired a brilliant, blinding beam of light at you and you stumbled backwards. You rolled onto the ground, eyes closed and breaths evening out. When you awoke, you wouldn't remember him. You wouldn't remember anything about him at all, so you wouldn't interfere with whatever plans Yeonjun's father had for him.

Soobin chuckled and Yeonjun glared with the force of a supernova. "Man, I didn't think you had the guts, hyung."

The door on the other side of the deck slid open and in marched a pair of soldiers clad in titanium and meteorite armor, masked by visors of moonstone. They both boasted impressive rifles, a more advanced version of the pistol in Yeonjun's hands.

They seized the High Prince by his arms and he let them. His gun was confiscated, but he stared at your unconscious form curled up in the corner. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with you.

Yeonjun felt the weight of vibranium cuffs locking around his wrists. With a click, his doom was sealed.

"Great, now what?" He fired back at the Titan fleet.

"Oh," sang the second prince, "just one more thing."

From the same doorway emerged one more soldier, but this one didn't have a gun in their hands. The truth dawned on Yeonjun even before the soldier reached your body.

"No!" He thrashed in his captors' arms who only strengthened the power of his cuffs. Yeonjun hissed as pain seared through his arms and he buckled to his knees. "Fuck you!" He spat at the soldier picking you up like nothing more than a rag doll.

"Fuck you, too, traitor!" Yeonjun roared at the window. "She trusted you like a brother!"

Soobin tutted and Yeonjun could finally catch a gleam of his own brother's mocking face in the front windshield of the jet. Soobin grinned like a wolf. "Duty calls, hyung. You should have learned that by now."

He turned his attention to the soldier now standing on the outer deck of the ship. "Wanna watch? I should have brought popcorn."

The soldiers holding Yeonjun hauled him over to the massive window. You still laid limp in the soldier's arms, your skin crawling with crystals of ice now.

"Let her go, you son of a bitch! I'm doing what you want." Yeonjun was sweating from the searing heat of his restraints, but all he could see was you. As a human, you wouldn't survive for much longer out there without proper protection.

"If you say so."

As if Yeonjun's words were the magic word, the soldier released your body into space.

One could hear the High Prince’s cries of anguish in the next galaxy over.

i can’t sleep without you || penny oleksiak

Author’s Note: Look... She’s the Canadian record holder for most medals at the Summer Olympics. My brain decided that warranted a little piece of writing. I hope I did it and her justice because she truly is an icon. Both for the sport of swimming and for the Oleksiak family. GIF credit to maljic!

Warnings: I don’t think there’s anything! Feel free to let me know if anything should be warned about though. I’ll gladly add a warning for you.

Word Count: 1.5k+

Title: Sleep Without You by Brett Young

Additional: The reader should be gender-neutral. They’re implied to be a swimmer, so I did the best I could. Anyways! I hope everyone enjoys this! Feedback is always welcomed!!

You were humming along to the music filtering through your headphones. On the tray in front of you, you were tapping a pencil against your crossword book. You only had a few words filled in and it was driving you bonkers not being able to figure out some of them. Shifting your attention from the music to the crossword puzzle, you scanned the clues again to see if there were any easy ones that you missed.

5 Down: Layman’s oesophagus

Bopping your head along to the music, you smiled as you wrote ‘throat’ in the appropriate squares. You were grateful that you had found at least one easy clue. Filling out a few more answers that you had somehow missed, you tapped his pencil against the book a second time when you reached a stalemate at one of the remaining clues.

13 Across: Town at Eighth Mile of Boston Marathon

You paused your music, slid your headphones around your neck, turning to your best friend, Penny, beside you. You put the crossword book on the tray in front of her, pointing at the clue.

“You’re a trove of useless knowledge,” You said, “do you know the answer to that?”

Instead of answering, Penny grabbed the pencil and wrote Natick across the correct squares. Smiling, you slid the crossword book back in front of yourself. Penny handed you the pencil, turning back to the movie she was watching on the seat display; it looked like Finding Nemo or Finding Dory if you were to guess.

“Thanks, Penny,” you said, punching her playfully in the shoulder.

Humming, Penny smiled without looking away from her movie. “You’re welcome, babe.”

Leaning over, Penny checked her shoulder against yours. Your mouth went dry, face heating up both from the contact and the fact that Penny had called you what she had called you. Despite yourself, your traitorous body felt gooey and fuzzy. You quickly slid your headphones on, restarting the music. The last thing you needed was Penny to figure out how you felt.

For the rest of the flight to Calgary, you tried to focus on your crossword puzzle and the music you were listening to. You tried not to focus on the lingering gooey and fuzzy feelings the shoulder check and pet name from Penny had caused. Keyword: tried. Even with your music blasted as loud as was safe, you could still hear Penny laughing along to the movie. Every time Penny laughed, the gooey and fuzzy feelings bubbled back up deep within your gut.

When the plane finally landed about an hour later and everyone was disembarking, you kept to yourself. You knew your face was burning as bright as the morning sun after everything that had happened. The last thing you needed was someone to question you about it.

Thankfully, the bus ride to the hotel was without incident. You were also able to finish your crossword. Seeing as Penny was the last person you wanted to interact with right now, you went to Maggie for help. Maggie was concerned as to why you weren't asking Penny because she knew the two of you did everything together but she ultimately helped you when you said that Penny just wanted to rest after the long flight. Though, you were fairly certain you saw Maggie give you a sideways glance once or twice as she was giving you the answers to some of the clues. You couldn't be sure if it was because she didn't believe your story about Penny, or because she thought you were an idiot for not knowing the answers. Either way, you kept quiet and thanked her when the crossword was finished.

When everyone was assigned their rooms, you and Penny were paired together to the surprise of absolutely no one. Penny was talking to you about ways to refine your butterfly stroke when you put the keycard in the door. Walking into the room, you both froze as you dropped your suitcases beside each other.

Looking at each other after a moment, Penny cursed while you ran your hand down your face and around to the back of your neck, sighing.

“One bed,” you said, swallowing thickly. “There must’ve been a mix-up with the room assignments.”

Penny sighed, turning to you. “I’m alright with it as long as you are.”

You noticed something strange beyond the surface of Penny’s eyes; it looked like hope.

Feeling yourself short circuit, you nodded quickly. “Yeah, it’s fine.” Your words felt heavy, nervous. If Penny noticed, she didn’t acknowledge it.

Motioning to the bathroom, Penny began unzipping her suitcase. “I’m gonna take a quick shower. It helps me sleep.”

Feeling your mouth go dry for the second time that night, you nodded. You had seen Penny after a shower plenty of times; this time though, this time felt personal. Intimate. You would be sharing a bed, something that you had dreamt about for a while.

As Penny went to shower, you changed into your pyjamas. Swallowing thickly, you wanted to kick himself for packing nothing more than a pair of loose boxers and a skin-tight undershirt to wear to bed. Normally, that would be sufficient; you always had your bed. Today though, some power that existed made it happenstance that you would share a bed with the woman you had a lunar-sized crush on. In other words, loose boxers and a skin-tight undershirt felt insufficient.

When the bathroom door opened and Penny emerged wearing only sleep shorts and a sports bra, you felt less psychotic for wearing what you were wearing. Shimmying over toward the window, you allowed room for Penny on the side of the nightstand. Penny hummed in appreciation, slipping under the covers. Flicking on the lamp, she rolled over to face you.

“I hope you don’t mind that the lamp is on,” she said, motioning behind her. “Leaving a light on helps me sleep more soundly.”

You could see a blush rising on Penny’s face. Smiling softly, you slid under the cover and fluffed your pillow to get comfortable.

“No,” you said, “I don’t mind.”

You felt your heartstrings tug in different directions when Penny lit up with a genuine smile.

“Night, babe,” Penny yawned, closing her eyes. A few moments later, Penny’s breathing evened out.

“Night, Penny,” you mumbled, rolling over. You closed your eyes, drifting off to sleep after a few minutes. Your mind was transfixed on the fact that Penny had called you a pet name again.

In the morning, you felt warm. Too warm. Your first thought was that you had a fever. You grumbled and shifted around, trying to get comfortable in your newfound heat. That caused another grumble that you decidedly did not utter.

“Stay still, babe,” Penny mumbled, “cuddling you is no fun if you move.”

You sprung up as if you were on fire, looking down at Penny. Penny grumbled leaning on her elbow to look at you.

“Everything okay?” she asked, sounding concerned.

You swallowed, nodding haphazardly. “I’m sorry for invading your space like that.”

Penny ran a hand along your bicep. You shivered, leaning into the touch.

“You didn’t invade anything. I would’ve stopped you if I didn’t like it,” Penny paused.

“You mean...” the cogs started to turn in your head.

Nodding, Penny smiled. “Yes. I have feelings for you. Have had feelings for you for a long time.”

Sitting up properly, Penny cupped your face. On instinct, you brought your hands to Penny's ribcage. Shivering at the contact, Penny leaned in and ghosted her lips over yours. You felt your lips tremble at the feather-light sensation. You leaned in to chase the feeling, lips making contact with Penny's.

You kissed each other for a moment, pulling back when you nibbled on Penny's lower lip. Penny looked blissed and content when you looked into her eyes. She caught you staring and smirked.

Ducking your head, you placed it on Penny’s shoulder. Grabbing your chin, Penny pulled your head up. Looking into Penny's eyes, you could see nothing but tenderness and care staring back at you.

“You have pretty eyes,” you blurted.

Penny's face turned a soft shade of pink as she leaned in, kissing you. The kiss was soft, sweet, and the most meaningful kiss you had ever experienced. Unlike the kisses you had had with people in the past, this kiss with Penny felt like it mattered in the grand scheme of things. It felt right.

Laying down to cuddle some more before practice, you heard one of the phones vibrate on the nightstand. It was Penny's phone that had vibrated but when you went to give it to her, she had already fallen back asleep. You looked at the phone screen and saw that the notification was a text from her brother, Jamie. You knew what Penny's password was because she had trusted you with it ages ago. Sighing, you entered the 6 digits and opened up the text thread to see what Jamie had wanted this early in the morning.

After reading the message, you placed Penny's phone on the nightstand. You kissed her on the forehead before curling around her and drifting off to sleep. The only thing on your mind was that you were grateful that Penny had a brother like Jamie.

I’d like it if you guys could look over my tea man for me! (Art by my friend lythaeriahomestucks. I haven’t made him a sprite yet.

Oofadoofa it’s been a while. Hi I hope your roleplay group is fun!

World: Alternia, but the draft is a lot further off than in canon, because none of my group is interested in roleplaying interstellar space battles or politics, especially considering the amount of setup that would have to go into making deep space believable. Though I think Friendsim’s stated they’re dragged off planet at 9 sweeps, so he’d still have a little time before getting dragged underground anyway.

Name: Oolong Matcha. Yes, they’re both types of tea. It started off as a quick joke, but I’ve grown to love it. Not only is matcha green, like his blood, but he’s a gardener, and really enjoys tea.

Mmmmm I mean joke trolls are famously canon in Homestuck. See: SWIFER EGGMOP or the salt and pepper shaker troll BUTTT mmmm. I feel like naming a character based at least partially on Japanese monks Oolong would deserve some side-eye. But I like the matcha bit! So let’s see…I like him being a gardener since monastic gardens were very much A Thing, and one of the famous still-extant ones is at Rievaulx abbey, so maybe we give him RIVULX, which sounds sufficiently trollish and is obvious enough for someone to get the reference.

Age: 9.69 Sweeps, or 21 Earth years.

Theme/Story: He’s partially themed after monks, specifically Irish and Japanese, which was originally an excuse for his bald head, but ended up influencing his clothing, calm demeanor, and lusus. I was also, oddly, thinking of 4chan – not maniacs like /pol/, but just average people who don’t get out enough, like to chatter about anime or cooking, and generally act like a bit of a dipshit. Fatherhood is definitely a theme with him as well – he’s already a father figure to two other trolls.

Hmmm. I like the broad concept, but I think we can tighten up a little on the “monk” theme by expanding it. Review Goals: General overview, classpecting advice, filling in missing details like fetch modus or lunar sway, etc.

Strife Specibus: He greatly prefers to snipe threats before they reach him, but if he’s forced into melee, he’ll grab a pipe and go berserker nuts. He takes satisfaction in neutralizing threats, especially if he’s protecting someone or something. He’s not averse to talking things out, but dislikes putting others on the line.

Hmm. None of that is a strife specibus, though I suppose you’re going for riflekind and pipekind. Generally void players use fistkind since it’s the absence of a weapon, but if you want to give him another option besides hand-to-hand melee may I suggest poisonkind? He could use something from his garden, like monkshood :3c. Or if you want to give him a melee weapon he could use the sansetsukon per the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which would double as a symbol reminder since he could arrange the segments in a backwards s. Fetch Modus: ;;3;; I have absolutely no idea.

What about a clue modus where the items are obscured but contain details describing them? With the caveat that some of them will have similar color/taste/textures listed. I think this might be fun because there are actually *two* famous detectives with the last name Monk, Adrian Monk and William Monk.

Blood Color: Jade.

That works great, especially with Friendsim’s reveal that many jades are indeed monastic/cloistered.

Lunar Sway: Not sure.

Given that he’s a monk and you have painted him as someone unlikely to cause conflict or rebel against the system, I think he’d be a Prospit dreamer.

Title: Knight of Void, someone who exploits what little secrecy and irrelevance he has for all it’s worth. He was first conceived as a Bard, to fit into a fansession, but I eventually decided it didn’t fit what the character had developed to be.

Symbol and Meaning: I made it up, and it doesn’t have a name. It’s an infinity symbol, broken in the center - like this, but flipped 90 degrees clockwise. I guess it could tie into his aspect by…destroying infinity, I guess, but I really haven’t put that much thought into it.

If we’re going by the EZ, he would be Virittanius, the Deliberate. Which I think fits him quite well! It also looks like a further corruption of the sign you gave him, so I may toy with that a little in the redesign. Handle: I feel like I might have given him a serious handle at one point, but if I did, I forgot it, so for now, it’s oolongMatcha. Just his name. Considering his classpect and desire for secrecy, this makes about as much sense as a rain barrel made out of crackers, but I’m not sure what to give him.

Since his new initials are RM, maybe revenantMyiopsitta. Revenant, of course, to hint at the fact that he’s part of the blood caste most commonly associated with rebirth after death, and Myiopsitta being the genus for two types of parakeet: the cliff parakeet and the monk parakeet. So we have his true identity as well as the unusual nature of his hive, both concealed in plain sight. Quirk: he types in all lower case and likes putting his horns in his emoticons! ’:) Maybe doing it like (:; would make more sense, as it’s his right (our left) horn that’s busted.

I like it! Depending on his redesign you may also want him to uƨe backwardƨ ƨ’ƨ to mimic hiƨ ƨymbol.

Special Abilities: Supreme Dadliness. Jokes aside, he’s a crack shot, even with his impeded vision, and has been successfully flying under the radar his whole life.

If you still want him to be a crack shot even with the changes I suggested above, maybe he uses blowdarts to poison his enemies from afar?

Lusus: His father is a MASSIVE white snake; I was thinking some kind of constrictor. Personality-wise, he’s close to a prototypical 50s dad. He’s a safe haven for his son and those his baby cares about, and is exceedingly patient, to the point of letting a small child fingerpaint on him. He’s also willing to carry Oolong in emergencies, though I’m not really certain that would work in real life, movement-wise.

I feel like the snake can be a little overplayed as a lusus. If we want to give him something similar to a mother grub as a jadeblood, why not a massive butterfly based on the monk/dusky friar? It also gives you the mechanics for how his dadderfly would carry him around in emergencies.

Interests: He used to spend a lot of time alone on the internet - I originally conceptualized him as a very lonely NEET, to the point he had to find his wallet to remember his own name - but has become more adventurous and friendly, spending more time with his girlfriend and friends (and he has friends now!) He’s very proud of his garden and fruit trees, some of which are rare, difficult to grow properly, and/or dangerous (offering more security).

Huh! You don’t explain *how* he goes from isolated to friendly, but I’d hope that gardening is a way for him to reach out to others since it’s a hobby you can commit to on your own but bond with other hobbyists.

Hive: He lives out in the woods by himself, though not so far from other trolls that he can’t take the day to go shopping or see his mate. His hive is surrounded by his garden on all sides, and has a very visible path down the center (making it easy for him to see anyone approaching, and shoot if they’re a threat). Trees surround it, and dangerous plants are strategically placed to make going through his garden unpleasant at best (it also makes weeding a pain, but he thinks it’s worth it). His hive is especially unusual in that the porch is raised up to the second floor with large poles, and you have to use a ladder to get up to it (unless you’re snakedad, in which case you go up the poles). He has a remote so he can let it down from the ground, as well as access to it on the platform, so he can let people up himself. I don’t think the ground level has a door. I’d be happy to submit pictures, if you want.

Feel free to show us pictures, but I like the concept a lot!

Appearance: Tall and rail-thin, excepting his oddly curvy hips. (I figured due to jades being majority female, developing jade males might be exposed to more than the usual amount of estrogen and androgens. Also I’m way more used to drawing women than men and his initial outline was a gal for like ten minutes.) He shaves his head bald. (This is because A) I didn’t want to bother trying to figure out men’s hair - I almost never draw dudes - and B) he’s partially themed after monks, who often shave their heads. I don’t remember why he says he does it.)

…man, I’m gonna take issue with the way you phrased this description. There’s a lot of gender essentialism going on in your explanation there, and given that a number of us mods are trans and nonbinary I feel obligated to point out a few things:

1) Trolls are bugs. They’re not even mammals. They aren’t exposed to androgen or estrogen or any hormone to give them a certain body shape. It is quite heavily implied that when the mother grub gives birth it is to a bunch of larvae.

2) I know that Homestuck lore has given us largely jade girls and one jade trans guy but that’s no reason to assume that jade men are broadly more “feminine” by default in *any* dimension

3) Even if trolls *did* work like humans, it rubs me the wrong way to see someone talking about a man’s “oddly” curvy hips like I’ve got guy friends both trans and cis with wide hips and the only reason to remark on it at all is because We Live In A Society that forcibly genders people in relation to physical characteristics.

…So I am otherwise taking your description at face value. ______ Matcha is tall, rail thin, with curvy hips and a bald head. I will probably add some little fangs, per the Alternian fashion guide.

He wears leggings (unless it’s very hot) and long tunics or robes, usually tan, with his symbol emblazoned on the breast. He goes barefoot if he can. His right (our left) horn is broken, due to an accident in his youth (I think he fell onto something?), amusingly improving his vision, since his unbroken left horn points in front of his left eye, obscuring it somewhat. His face could almost be described as delicate, and his default expression is calm.

I don’t knooooow that tan is a color trolls wear all that often in Alternia, so I will see how I can rework that in the redesign. I get him being barefoot, but I may give it a shot spriting him monk shoes for if he wants to go on an outing. :3c For his broken horn…hm. When we see trolls with physical damage, it is almost always something more significant than just “childhood accident” (see: every troll in Homestuck except Equius who somehow had like 3 simultaneous accidents?). I have an idea for his horns that I will get to in the redesign, and I will probably add a hook to his front horn, both because it’s a jadeblood trait and because it seems suitably horrifying to constantly have a sharp implement millimeters from your eye.

Personality: Oolong is a nice, fatherly young man, well regarded by most he meets. He really really likes tea. He has a beautiful, dangerous mafiosa matesprite in a rustblood named Andora Ingenu, and they adore each other. He’s also taken on the substitute dad role for an adorable young fuschia who lives in the swamp near his forest, Lillie Waters, teaching her how to cook (and keep her tools clean) and rescuing her from other fuschias. He’s very protective of his and his loved ones’ privacy and safety, and spends a LOT of his time in the massive gardens around his hive, of which he’s deservedly proud. He is very good at being sneaky, and sometimes takes the time to run around seeing what he can get away with, especially in the realm of snatching seeds up for his garden. He sells whatever plants he can grow for money, especially fruits and vegetables, but he doesn’t really enjoy sales. He doesn’t put a lot of stock in blood superiority, but doesn’t make a big deal out of it. He’s oddly well adjusted for someone who spent most of his life alone.

I like this description! Also looking at his close compatriots, it looks like I can swap the tan in his design for rust or fuchsia. We already see jadebloods wearing a fair amount in the red/burgundy/purple spectrum, so it should fit right in with the others.

Land: I don’t remember if I’ve come up with one. If I did, I feel like it may have heavily wooded areas, dark and tangled and difficult to navigate.

Hmmm. What about Land of Rough and Reflection (LORAR)? Covered in rough terrain, with pools to contemplate oneself. Unbeknownst to your troll, there are switches at the bottom of each lake (deeper than he could ever hope to dive and hold his breath) that must be flipped to drain the lakes and free the consorts from the underwater caves in which they’ve been trapped for generations. His land would initially seem completely empty and without guidance, and it neatly parallels his own situation before he began to socialize.

I hope you like him! :) I’d love to see what you guys think of him.

He’s certainly an interesting troll, and I hope I’ve helped by way of sharpening up on his theme! Let’s move on to the redesign.

Hair - I gave him some stubble courtesy of fan-troll (I have never managed a post without plugging fan-troll/tajazzled’s sprite sheet and I’m not gonna stop now)

Horns - I wanted to make his other horn sort of…curve away from his head so it looks like his symbol from above?

Eyes and brows - they didn’t change but big ups to fan-troll for giving me bases to modify!

Mouth - this is a modification of Sollux’s mouth but I gave him lil fangs and a little lower lip definition

Robes - I just modified some of Kanaya’s robes, appropriately enough! I decided to go for a red/pink shade that was between rust and fuchsia so he could fit in while subtly broadcasting his allegiance

Shoes - they’re John’s but with buckles! :B monk shoes

Puppy Love || Adriana & Jax

date: 26 December 2017 @ approx. 2:30 pm location: The Karavadra Estate, New Rome

Adriana is on the receiving end of Jax’s gift giving attempts, and the pair make a set of new friends.

To be honest, Jax wasn’t sure of the last time he’d been as nervous as he was now. He was almost entirely certain that Adriana would like her present from him, though it had probably been a bit of a strange request when he’d instructed her to meet him for the last portion of her gift. Then again, she too had asked him on an excursion as a gift. Perhaps it was simply another way they were continuously similar, though he abhorred the idea of ever admitting that he and she might have anything in common. Nevertheless, he had led Adriana to the lake’s edge before continuing onwards to the Karavadra Estate. He’d needed a decent sized room for his plan, and his family mansion had a plethora of them. Now, as he stood in front of the double doors of the room he’d planned to give her gift in, he looked to her once more. “You ready?” he asked, nerves still dancing in his stomach. Scuffles of activity seemed to be coming from the room behind him, though it was hard to make out exactly what was happening.

Adriana knew well that sometimes experiences were better gifts than material items. She had chosen such a route with Jax, and now he was taking it with her. The first part of his gift had been brilliantly chosen— she had elected to wear the proper lunar necklace to speak her approval for her —so theoretically his remaining gift would be similarly pleasant, but she didn’t want to build up expectations, just in case. She had come to the First Cohort as instructed and subsequently followed his lead all the way to his family estate. The secret gift had already been intriguing, yet when they stood outside of the double doors to a random room and heard mysterious scuffling inside, her curiosity skyrocketed. There were butterflies in her stomach then. Were there other people involved in this? Was he going to put her on the spot in some way? Despite her anxious thought, her excitement was unfazed. “As I’ll ever be,” she breathed, glancing from Jax to the doors.

Jax had been entirely pleased to see Adriana wearing one of the necklaces he had gotten her, and idly he reached out to touch the chain of it, trailing his fingers down the metal while letting the backs of his them brush lightly against her neck. “I hope you’re wearing this because you like it, and and not just because you’d like to spare my feelings...Though I can’t possibly think of what might have come over you if you were wearing it for the latter reason.” It wasn’t exactly a secret that’d they were always rather blunt with each other, not particularly interested in going light on each other’s feelings. Though of course, they never truly sought to do any lasting harm. Just then he had the urge to kiss her, an urge that was happening more and more frequently at an alarming rate. But here in the hall of his home, where quite literally anyone could see them— it only seemed like asking for trouble. So instead he simply sent another smile her way before opening the double doors behind him. “I hope this isn’t too obvious. I’d hate to come off as thoughtless.” As soon as his words were spoken, the sounds from inside became clear— and the cutest ball of fluff came running towards them at breakneck speed, all too excited to see what it was that lie behind the doors that Jax and Adriana had been standing outside of. Though it wasn’t just one puppy within the enormous room. The place had been turned into a puppy wonderland, filled with toys and treats and countless dogs. “I might have rented out all the dogs from the shelter and brought them here. Obviously you’re free to adopt any of them you might want. That's kind of the point.” He was talking faster than usual, entirely nervous for what her reaction might be. “I figured you’d want to choose for yourself rather than me choosing. And don’t worry about feeling guilty about not adopting them all. I made a rather sizeable donation to the shelter in your name so— even if they don’t get adopted today, they’ll definitely find a good home.” He watched her face closely, trying to gauge her reaction.

The trail of his fingers left a subtle tingling sensation behind on Adri’s skin. The result drew her eyes to his hand, then to his face once more. A smirk crossed her lips. “Well, that implies that you have feelings to be spared.” She was teasing, of course, but it was likewise her way of confirming his former assumption— she truly was fond of his gift. There were still a few persisting nerves when he worried about his greater gift being too obvious, but no sooner had Adriana’s brows furrowed in question than her eyes had grow wide at the sights and sounds the opened doors revealed to them. She was unresponsive, mouth slightly agape, until the fluffball that came barreling through the doors reached her feet. It broke her free of a trance. She reached down and scooped him up securely, then turned on Jax in lingering astonishment. “You rented the entire shelter? How…” The logistics it would have required to get all of the dogs and equipment here must have been a nightmare, and considering Jax had spent the previous day among family, and Jefferson had more than likely been present, he must set this up far more recently. It was a tremendous effort, but he’d taken it on for her.

Adriana grabbed him by the wrist and dragged him into the room, making sure to shut the doors behind them. The instant they were safe from prying eyes, she threw her free arm around his neck and leaned up on her toes to catch his lips in a kiss. It was the thrilled sort of fierce that ended early because she couldn’t help breaking out into a smile in the midst of it. And the squirming pup in her second arm didn’t help. “It was a little obvious,” she grinned at him, though her expression shifted quickly from a tease to sincerity, “but only a madman would call this thoughtless.” After stealing the tiniest second kiss, Adriana set the dog she’d retrieved back on the ground and eagerly pulled Jax into the throng along with her. The whole metaphor about being as excited as a kid on Christmas morning was a literal here as it was figurative. She sat them both down near the center of the activity, intending to let the dogs approach her at their own will rather than seeking them out as most would. “If I’m adopting one, so are you,” stated matter-of-factly. As one of the mutts approached to inspect them, Adriana offered her hand to assure her neutrality. “Surely you didn’t think you could get away with bringing them all the way here and not keeping one as a result?”

Indeed, it had taken Jax quite a good amount of effort to get this ready. Being out of New Rome the day before he’d planned to do it hadn’t helped, and the rather protective owner of the shelter had taken more charming than he’d had to make for getting Leo and appointment with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. After all, she hadn’t wanted her dogs to be maltreated. It had taken everything from signing a contract to giving her a tour of the Estate, as well as a highly detailed outline of all the amenities he would have available for the dogs to convince her to let Jax have his way. But as soon as he saw Adriana’s reaction, he knew it to be worth it. As she pulled him into a couple of kisses, his heart began to race, and he only barely had time to return them with how fast it had all happened. Her words as well as the smile that had lit her face was more than enough to garner his own grin. Yes, all the effort had most certainly been worth it.

Feeling the slightest bit clingy, though he would never admit such a thing, Jax opted to sit behind Adriana and rest his chest against her back, his long legs on either side of her and his arms wrapping around her with his head looking over her shoulder. He’d never really gotten the chance to express physical affection before, and though he still detested the thought of referring to it as affection, being close to Adriana was...nice. But his right eyebrow shot upwards at her mention of him taking a dog home. “Excuse me? Last time I checked this was your Christmas present.” One of the puppies that had been idly walking towards Adriana stopped in its tracks for a moment, opting to change its route at the last second to bump into Jax’s hip. “Great, I think this one heard you.”

Even if it wasn’t necessarily cold inside the Karavadra mansion, Adriana was glad for the warmth that Jax’s closeness provided. She sat cross-legged on the ground, fitting snugly in the gap between his legs. Being held like this was a new experience for her, and she quickly found that she very much liked it. “Yes, which is exactly why I get to choose what to do with it, and I’ve decided that you have to take part.” The daughter of Mars flashed him a wily grin over her shoulder before a newcomer wandered into their conversation. She was a cute little thing, white with black patches-- the very sort of spotted puppy that most kids would go mad over; however, it seemed that she was rather interested in Jax. Adriana watched her paw at his leg and smirked. “I think she’s just curious about you. It’s not likely the pups get much alone time with adults. Usually they have to put up with grabby children who come in to browse.” She watched the creature a few moments longer, raising a brow at Jax when she sat herself down facing his side, evidently waiting for him to acknowledge her. Patience. That wasn’t a quality often found in young dogs, Adriana stored the note away in her mind. “Well? Don’t be rude. She’s curious about you. It’s not like she’s going to bite your hand off.”

Jax rolled his eyes at Adriana as she glanced back at him, though it was possible some of the effect was lost as his lips turned upwards to mirror her grin. It was the strangest phenomena, more and more often Jax seemed to be responding to her smiles with one of his own, and he wasn’t entirely sure how he felt of it. “I should have never gotten you a present in the first place. I should have known you’d go all tyrannical on me.” Normally, Jax would be replying with their usual sass, but he couldn’t deny that he had a surprisingly soft spot for animals. Perhaps it was because animals were much less annoying and idiotic than humans. Either way, Jax glanced downwards at the young pup who was trying to gain his attention. She was rather adorable. “She’s a puppy, not a hellhound. Of course she’s not going to bite my hand off.” Though, it was debatable of whether or not a hellhound would actually bite his hand off as well. Such was a benefit of being the grandson of the mother of hellhounds. Nevertheless, Jax picked up the fluffy mongrel, and began to pet her steadily. “But enough about this little girl, how are you doing on your end?” After all, Adriana was meant to be the one finding a puppy.

“Please, if you think this is tyrannical, you’ve seen nothing yet,” a brief, devilish grin sparked upon her features but disappeared just as quickly. The lightness in her heart for the time being was too strong to grasp dark thoughts, even playful ones, for long. “Even hellhounds have their puppies,” she shrugged. “Doesn’t make them any less of a hellhound, technically.” She was thrilled to see that Jax had actually picked up the little lady at his side. Her wagging tail was an obvious sign of approval. On Adriana’s end, picking a pup should have been easy. Young dogs wandered over to her, though scattered, as if pulled by some invisible magnet, like they could sense the canine bonds in her godly blood as well as in her familial legacy. But while they all received a bit of attention, none of them were really jumping out to her. She pegged a few as good dogs for training-- future military, rescue, and service dogs --just not companions. Then, a dark streak of fur stalking along the far edge of the room caught her eye. He looked to be avoiding the rest of the company, taking advantage of their distraction to get at the treats and toys they had left behind. Adri liked that. She rose from her seat by Jax without a word, padding over to the lad, who seemed ready to bolt. But as she knelt down and held out a hand to him, as she had with the female in Jax’s arms, he paused and lingered where he stood, gradually leaning forward to sniff at the appendage. She didn’t push it or attempt to speak to him besides the simple words of “It’s alright.” Eventually, he ducked his head beneath her hand and pushed up into it, expecting a scratch on the head, which Adri gave him gladly. “I’m not entirely sure,” she spoke backwards at Jax, “but I think this guy’s growing on me.”

Jax wasn’t entirely sure if she’d missed the point of his hellhound comment, or if he’d missed her’s. “Yeah, but I’m assuming normal puppies are rather less likely to bite my hand off than a monstrous one.” Though he was somewhat disappointed by the loss of Adriana against him, it did give him the opportunity to bring the little puppy that had come to him closer to his chest, where he cuddled it for a moment. But once he saw a certain dog to have caught Adriana’s eye, he set the young pup down, drawing somewhat closer to the pair— though making sure to keep his distance. But at his heels was the little dog that had seemed to take a shining to him, though he couldn’t possibly imagine why. It wasn’t long before she began to whine, obviously wanting to be held once more, and as another puppy approached Jax, the first puppy gave a territorial bark in the newcomer’s direction, as if she’d already laid her claim to the man. Raising an amused eyebrow, Jax scooped up the same puppy once more. Her left hand took over scratching him behind the ear whilst her other drifted down to gently part an uneven patch of fur on the right side of the base of his neck. She referenced the spot to Jax with a glance, drawing his eyes to the scar of a scratch that was hidden there. It had been well tended to by the shelter owners, but nonetheless, it was evidence that not all of these small canines were as darling as they let on. “It’s not a bite, but I’d say it’s evidence enough that size and youth don’t necessarily represent temperament, even in puppies.” Sitting down once more, Adriana offered the pup a chance to lie across her lap, which he did, forelimbs folding over her left leg. Though that in itself...was somewhat of a critique,” he said with a bemused smile. “But not everything has to be.” It was a rather foreign peace offering, as he knew their usual relationship had always been a lot of banter and the like, but he hoped Adriana knew that it was okay to simply talk and exist like normal people every once in a while. Otherwise, he wasn’t sure how long their ‘arrangement’ might last if they were constantly at each other’s throats...though sometimes it was quite enjoyable to be at each other’s throats in places such as his bed and her desk.

A sigh shook Jax as Adriana finally made her point of size and age not being a factor of someone’s temperament. “Obviously I know that. Such a thing was made obvious when you were winning numerous arm wrestling matches and screaming about it at age five. I just meant- obviously something with a monstrous heritage would most likely be more inclined to be violent than something without. Though before you try and make an argument against that, obviously I know some exceptions might exist.” Jax considered the ball of fluff he was still holding before saying gently to the young pup, “You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?” Jax wandered closer to the two of them, wanting to be close to Adriana but not wanting to ruin whatever moment she might be having with her pup. Vaguely he registered the trace of sadness in her smile, and it tugged at his own emotions as the realization that there probably wasn’t much he wouldn’t do to keep Adriana from looking sad set in. “Well I think he found one,” he said with a small smile towards Adriana. “If you’re ready and willing,” he said playfully. A if to prove his point that not everything had to be a critique, he tried for something a little different than their usual words. “He’d be lucky to have you.”

To be honest, the banter was a bit ridiculous and convoluted, yet it kept rolling on seemingly without end. Why? Adriana had a thought that she wasn’t too fond of admitting. She and Jax had been arguing with one another as if they needed the conflict to breathe up until their relationship evolved into what it was now— which she had no idea how to classify. Suddenly, the banter was far less frequent. They were— dare she say it —enjoying one another’s company. And while it was still there, the atmosphere between them was practically foreign to her. Perhaps she was trying to compensate for the differences and keep that argumentative component alive, even if it didn’t give her the satisfaction it used to. Everything just had to slow down in order for her to catch up. Adriana was adaptable on the battlefield, but personal relations demanded cautiousness. It was simply how she’d been raised and she couldn’t escape it. Not on her own, anyway.

No matter the attempted upkeep of banter, Jax broke through it once again. Her heart softened at the sight of him speaking so gently with the young dog in his arms. It was a sight she’d never have imagined seeing, yet here they were. “Ooh, yeah,” she managed to smirk back in his direction. “Your arm wrestling record was pretty sad, wasn’t it?” When the puppy in Adri’s lap moved to switch his position, he drew back her attention and another scratch behind the ears. She continued to smooth a hand along his back, offering him comfort. Soon, he found his way into her arms and Adriana pressed a gentle kiss to his head while holding him to her chest. “Yeah…” she smiled at Jax’s words— surprisingly sincere ones. “And you’d be lucky to have her.” A quick glance at the furball in Jax’s possession accompanied a small chuckle. “They’d both be better off having the two of us to deal with, I suppose.”

Jax’s fondness for animals wasn’t something he tried to hide, though it wasn’t a trait he paraded about either. It was simply a part of who he was. No more. No less. And it was exhibiting itself as Jax dangled a playful finger above the little one in his arms, a half-smile of amusement present on his lips. It’d been put there by the little puppy’s reaction to his teasing as she pawed at the wiggling finger, and gave a playful snap towards it. “Ohhh, someone’s decided to get a bit feisty, haven’t we?” Was he talking about the puppy or Adriana? Perhaps both. “You wish,” was all he said at first in response to Adriana’s quip about arm-wrestling. “You’ve probably just blocked my amazing success from your memory, unable to bear the shame of it.” With a sigh, Jax knew he was done in for. If he was being honest, he’d known he would be taking the puppy in his arms home the moment she’d followed him. Still, he’d tried to at least pretend he had some form of resistance to cute animals. “Well I guess it’s settled then. Looks like we’re once again proud parents.”

Jax and Adri shared a fondness for animals. It was one of the few things they had actually agreed upon as children. Despite her awareness of that fact, however, watching Jax dangle his finger above a puppy he was holding in his arms was like discovering it for the first time. His interaction with the pup was… adorable, and putting that word in context with Jax may as well have made him a stranger. When he nuzzled against Adriana’s chest, the daughter of Mars tightened her hold on him. He yawned and she placed another small kiss on the top of his head. Jax received a mirror of that kiss on his cheek a few seconds later. “Thank you,” she spoke quietly beside his ear before stepping back. “This is the most outrageous thing anyone has ever done for me. Unfortunately for you, I don’t know how you’re ever going to top it.” Taking a small step closer to him, she leaned in just enough reach out a hand and scratch under the muzzle of the little one in his arms. “So what do you think you’re going to call her?”

The expression that came over Jax every time he was preparing to tease Adriana came over his features, a certain sort of glint appearing in his eye. “I wouldn’t have to rent out an entire shelter to get you gullible enough. You’re already there.” Perhaps he’d been a bit different around Adriana as of late, but they weren’t the same two people they’d been a couple of months ago. Or perhaps they were, but they’d simply discovered that together, they could be something entirely different than they’d been. Either way, they were changing by the day. It had yet occured just yet what that change may be, and he wasn’t too concerned with analyzing the shifts in their relationship, simply taking the changes as they came. Thus far he hadn’t stumbled across one development that wasn’t to his liking. In fact, he was quite fond of the new discoveries. One such discovery was the fact that the heart in his chest seemed to thump a little quicker as Adriana planted a kiss on his cheek, and her words and closeness brought a small smile to his lips. If he’d made Adriana happy today, that was all he’d wanted to do. Though he wondered slightly at when making Adriana happy had become a priority of his. “‘I’m glad.” Holding his new pup in a single arm, he slipped his now free one to Adriana’s chin to tilt her lips towards his, and moved in to plant a kiss on her lips before speaking against them suggestively. “But we all know better than to doubt my abilities to top things.” He looked down at the pup squirming between them, his hand falling from her chin to her hip. Jax would be lying if he said he hadn’t already been mulling names over in his head, and he’d chosen one that seemed to fit the young girl. “I was thinking Sabine.” A crater on the moon near the Statio Tranquillitatis who had somewhat of a twin crater. Who knew, perhap one day he’d gain another pup and have a matching set of names. “What about you and your new boy?”

“Debatable,” Adriana smirked at the tease Jax imposed upon her, yet not defying it as vigorously as she used to. There were far more relevant topics at hand. That her kiss, however small, brought a smile to the man’s face triggered a blossoming warmth in her chest, a sense of satisfaction that she was still getting used to. Usually the heat in her chest upon a victory was more intense, coupled with the adrenaline of having won some more traditional battle. This, however, was almost a cosy sort of sensation, one that coaxed a similar smile to her own lips. Jax could be annoyingly infectious in that way. It was an expression that persisted through his kiss, only to shift its form to a hinted mischief at his innuendo -- that she was as well have put in his mouth, intentionally, the moment she brought the concept of ‘topping’ into their conversation. “Fair enough.” Adriana withdrew from their close contact with a feather-light drag of her teeth over his bottom lip and subsequently directed her eyes to his pup. “Sabine,” she nodded. “A lunar name. It suits her.” After a final ruffle between the little lady’s ears, the dark ball of fluff in her arms received her gaze. For a moment, she paused to contemplate what name he might be given. She hadn’t been actively thinking about it until now, but Jax’s name for his new adoptee proved to be a valuable inspiration. “Polaris.” The axis mundi of the cosmos; a guiding light; a stellar constant. And it was a rather appropriate name too. Despite the dog’s pitch black coat, there was one stark white spot on his chest. Surely that would prove representative enough of a star. Polaris was returned to the floor a few seconds after his name was declared, as was Sabine, who Adriana took directly from Jax’s arm to release. Once they were free to roam among the rest of the canines in the room, the daughter of Mars returned Jax’s hand to her hip by her own touch and stepped forward to stand practically flush with his body. This time it was his chin that was tilted, only down rather than up, so that she could properly deliver a tease to his lips. “Now, what was that you said about knowing better?”

Already Jax was wanting to return to Adriana for yet another kiss from the moment she parted from him, her toying teeth all too tempting to deny. For the most part, he’d thought Sabine a fitting name as the two black spots over the pup’s eyes were all too reminiscent of the moon’s twin craters when placed against the field of white that was the rest of her face. Then he was humming an approval of Adriana’s name choice, not so secretly pleased with her, quite literally, stellar choice. It was no secret he had a fondness for celestial names. As the woman took both his new puppy and withdrew from his touch, the smallest of what could only be called a pout formed on his features. How was it fair that his two favorite things in the room had been taken from him? Thankfully, he wasn’t left without one of them for long as Adriana came back to him in a way that was all too welcome. Instantly his hands were pulling her impossibly closer, his lips already beginning to pepper kisses down the side of her neck as an amused chuckle fell from him. “It sounds like a demonstration is in order.” Not bothering to separate them, he began to pull her towards the door of the room. He could think of a few empty and close rooms that would be all to easy to fall into with Adriana, making good use of the seldom utilized bed.

Samjinnal is a Korean holiday that falls on March 3 of the lunar calendar. Three being a positive number in numerology, this date containing two threes was considered to be highly auspicious. This festive day announces the arrival of spring. By this time, spring is usually in full bloom – the weather is warm, the young grass is a lively green, and the first flowers are blooming.

Note: Because this holiday is based on the lunar calendar, on Gregorian Calendars the date will vary from year to year. In 2016, this holiday was celebrated on April 9th, in 2017, this holiday falls on March 30.

It is known as the day the swallows came back from Gangnam and the day the snake came out from its winter sleep. It is also the day birds and butterflies start to appear.

Koreans believed that swallows left for their southward journey on ninth day of the ninth lunar month and returned back on Samjinnal. They started to repair their old nests under the eaves or built the new ones to hatch their young.

Many seasonal activities associated with spring took place on this day. Villagers headed out on a blossom tour of the nearby mountains as the gardens were increasingly frequented by butterflies, fresh-green buds became visible on tree branches and the hills and prairies put on their colourful spring dresses.

Popular picnic foods included flower petal pancakes and other seasonal delights. Banquets were also held around this time of year to treat senior members of the community to special meals. For the noblemen across the country, Samjinnal was a day of archery contests.

Flower petal pancakes for the blossom picnic were made with glutinous rice batter, formed in circles, fried in a pan with sesame oil and topped with azalea petals. A special dessert known as hwamyeon was prepared by putting slices of mung-bean dough cakes into omija (favour flavor berries)-scented water, and flavouring it with honey and pine nuts. When preparing the mung bean dough for this dessert, housewives sometimes added azalea petals to it. If they made the dough with honey and dyed it red, the dish would be called sumyeon.

Sumyeon was considered a ritualistic dish as it was frequently used for memorial services.One of the beliefs associated with Samjinnal is that seeing a white butterfly on that day was an ominous sign since white signifies mourning. The sighting of a white butterfly could result in a family member dying during the course of the year.

Tiger or yellow butterflies on the other hand were considered an excellent sign, and portended a lucky year. Women made sure they washed their hair on Samjinnal as they believed it would make their hair vigorous and beautiful throughout the year. Snakes that came out of their hibernation around that time were avoided at all costs since seeing these slithering creatures was regarded as unlucky.

Other names for this holiday:

It was called samjil (삼질) in oldKorean language and referred to as sangsa (상사, 上巳), wonsa (원사, 元巳), sungsam(중삼, 重三), sangje (상제, 上除) or dapcheongjeol (답청절, 踏靑節) in hanja. Samjinnal implies the overlapping of Sam (three). According to Choi Namseon, samjil was derived from the consonants of Samil, and Sangsa is defined as the first snake day of the 3rd lunar month.

Andalite Chronicles reread - still awesome

I just reread The Andalite Chronicles. Both the action and backstory were as great as I remembered.

Now that I'm watching Star Trek, I noticed more such comparisons: Battle bridge, plasma conduit and memory wipe were direct phrasing. On the Enterprise-D, ensigns have shared quarters versus arisths' tiny personal quarters on Dome ships. Alloran's attitude reminded me of the warrior side of Starfleet compared to the scientists and diplomats. Enemies working together to save both them, Esplin and Elfangor getting to the Time Matrix, reminded me of TNG s2e8 A Matter of Honor and s3e7 The Enemy. The conclusion, a butterfly effect from avoiding trouble, reminded me of TNG s6e15 Tapestry. Ethical mutiny echoed TNG s7e12 The Pegasus.

Skrit Na were a great in character explanation for stereotypical aliens - their and their ships' appearance, the stealing and experimenting behavior. The diatribe about feet that need shoes, versus hooves, came off as ableism as well as funny cultural confusion. It took me a bit to realize that Sub-Visser Seven would become Visser Three, but his characterization made a lot of sense once I noticed. Sick at hearts was great Andalite-specific phrasing.

Loren represented good human nature in her curiosity; Chapman's selfishness and distrust showed a bad side of us.

Alloran chewing out Chapman for insulting Loren's father's PTSD remains one of the series' great serious moments. Yet Alloran's sympathy seems somewhat incongruous with Andalite ableism. Of course, Elfangor in the Mustang remains one of the franchise's humor highlights.

Before this, the last modification was 11/22/14, I made only wording changes to original review. I can't find the original post so I'm adding it below rather than reblogging; this happened with one of my previous rereads as well.

The canon information started coming quickly, and I love that. This included things I didn't know and confirmation of things I had suspected. There were a lot of great parallels to the main series.

So a Dome could beat a Pool and fighters. I'm guessing it could also beat a Blade (and fighters?) one on one, but not both. I thought the Yeerks won because of Visser Three's tactics, hiding the Blade ship in a lunar crater.

Elfangor saying he was too weak to morph implies that he still had the power. I thought he lost it when the Ellimist restored his Andalite form, like how Tobias remained a hawk but could morph again.

So the namesake dome is a third of a mile across; 1760 feet (536.45 meters) isn't usually put like that, but it seems reasonable for an especially large dimension of a major warship. [The largest human warships are the US Ford class carriers at 1106 feet (337 meters) long]

I was afraid the Andalites had been reduced to slowing the Yeerks, and this confirmed that.

The hirac delest (memory record) framing device works well with stories of Elfangor's youth. It seems that he was a goofy youngster like Ax is.

So fighter pilot attitude crosses species barrier. I thought so. Models 14 and 22 seemed like an F-14 vs F-22 comment, though I'm not sure how accurate that analogy is in detail. Also, older Andalite fighters having pilot and gunner could explain Bug fighter design.

It was interesting to see the comparison between phasters and Dracons or Shredders made in canon.

Human-Andalite interaction was fun here as it was in the main series.

Chapman seems like David in the sense of focusing on how he can make the alien interaction work for him. I knew he was named Hedrick. No wonder he's on a last name basis.

Rather than dwelling on details of the action scenes, I got caught up in the adventure, which seems like a good thing.

I see Alloran as harsh but sensible even before the pool flush. I like how he called out Chapman for insulting Loren's father's PTSD, saying that a non-warrior wouldn't understand. Speaking of which, Elfangor said he was unaware of PTSD amongst Andalites. Does Elfangor not notice that due to youthful idealism? Do Andalites either ignore it more or have better medical care for it. Is their brain chemistry less prone to it?

I remembered Dracons made a TSEEEW sound. I was interested to learn that Shredders went TTTSSSAAAPPP. I notice slight variations in the amount of each letter. Is that intentional on K.A. Applegate's part?

Is Elfangor's reaction to the Taxxon ship boarding action PTSD or just first time jitters?

So not morphing for pleasure is a general Andalite thing. I thought it might have been an Animorph security issue.

I'm fascinated by the look at the Taxxon homeworld. I knew Elfangor couldn't give into the hunger, but I hadn't thought about suspicious that looked.

Sub-Visser Seven seems to have Visser Three's attitude. I wonder if it's Esplin 9466 pre-promotion. The improbable escape also seems like the main series.

I knew Arbron was a nothlit before he said that, but is that hindsight from reading facts about the series?

Hmm, Bug fighters are slow in atmosphere. That could give humans an advantage in fighting them. However, 3,000+ MPH is way faster than even top fighter jets. Overall, that was a great bit of information on ship design. It was also another good part of the adventure.

So Andalites commit suicide by tailblade rather than be made Controllers. Suspicion confirmed.

Elfangor's human culture shock is funny, as with Ax in the main series. Apparently he's looking at cigarette ads. The chapter ending with "and I liked it" made me think "It's Only Rock And Roll (But I Like It)" is one of the other Stones songs on the tape with Satisfaction and Honky Tonk Women. I figured Andalites would identify with natural environments on Earth.

Alloran showing up in Hork-Bajir morph? Hadn't seen that coming, nice rescue.

Besides the ethics of a particular decision, a moral stand leaves the dirty work to someone else. Alloran has an interesting point there. The quantum virus announcement came off as letting his big secret slip out of anger.

So I was right that Sub-Visser Seven went on to infest Elfangor. This also shows that Esplin 9466 already had his main series personality by this point in the war. I wonder exactly when the infestation happened and how Chapman is involved.

I really started to ship Elfangor/Loren by this point. Even before it came up in this story,

So the Graysha Nebula is hundreds of light years from Earth. My first thought is that the asteroids feed off of energy.

I figured Bug fighters might be launched from the Yeerks' bigger ships. I wonder how Pool capacity compares to Blade.

Mortal enemies working together against a bigger threat is always interesting. The hybrid bizarro world was a compelling result. Is this where Esplin/Alloran acquired the Vanarx morph?

Liquid grass? I had wondered what the humans were eating, and I'm not sure why it didn't come up until now. Considering the air hoods, I wonder what's slightly different about Andalite atmosphere.

The Ellimist is a dick, especially considering Elfangor/Loren, but we already knew that. Then again, I can see his greater good logic a bit more clearly now. (And apparently it's also the standard scifi not messing with time stuff)

No wonder Elfangor said F this. It's plausible and helps move the story along for the captain to be understanding and even supportive.

Loren aged to 18 from the Time Matrix; it seems poetic that she started out at about 13 like the Animorphs.

I did already see Tobias' friends as his new family.

Evolution is a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler or worse to a higher, more complex, or better state. Evolution is anathema to many religions which believe strictly in Creationism. What is the truth about it?

People want something which makes them feel as though their lives have significance and meaning, which is where religion enters. If a belief in one ideal serves to make their life appear to be something having deeper meaning and value than another then that serves as their truth.

If another belief makes them feel threatened that is rejected as false whether it is the truth or not. Most people are searching for probable truths but truth is often accompanied by serious pain and hardly anyone is looking for painful truth. Those people who insist that their version of truth is absolute and undeniable, acceptable or not, will incur the displeasure of those who deny such truths.

Our general knowledge of evolution is impaired by distorted impressions which are part of human teachings – narrow and like a pinhole of sunlight shining through – and we repudiate evolution in favour of instant creation since nothing short of miracles satisfy most persons

Much confusion exists in the minds of those who feel threatened that evolution implies that God does not exist when in fact it is a natural phenomena implemented by The Creator in order to serve His purposes to constantly improve the universe to better states of existence. If God’s interest in us is only in our spiritual perfection why involve all these complex transformations of organic nature? Perhaps it is so that while human beings are living in a material realm and gaining spiritual experience the inborn spirit of God within them is thereby enabled to gain invaluable human material experience.

The big difference between Creation and Evolution is the factor of time. Creation occurs without the passage of time while with human beings evolution slows down the transforming process to where the developing being can understand what is going on and can participate in it – can play a willing, conscious part in their own growth and transformation, determining what they will become.

Human beings have the opportunity to develop by experiential evolutionary growth and transformation to greater heights of moral and spiritual existence. If the acts of human beings are evil their growth is naturally repressed, but if their acts are good then their growth is augmented.

Evolution for us does not mean that we are directly descended from monkeys. Human beings are Homo sapiens sapiens and directly descended from primitive ancient Homo sapiens peoples from past eons (see Homo sapiens* below).

There presently still exist primitive tribes of peoples on earth who are far less evolved than the majority of humans, tribes of Aborigines in Australia and in New Guinea and elsewhere.

God’s plan is to develop human beings naturally by evolution, modifying the existing developed strains of creatures in much the same way that we observe how one form of creature becomes transformed into another as in the case of the tadpole evolving into the frog and as the caterpillar evolves into the butterfly…

From a design perspective it is only logical to presume that if God actually designed and then created human beings we would all be completely perfect in every way. We would be without any and all of the existing biological imperfections such as the parasitic DNA sequences which disrupt genomic operations in ways that cause suffering and diseases and ultimate death for all human beings, all of which results from our individual genetic inheritance – the endowments of all of our forebears.

Everything devolves back to human free will choices and acts which resulted in unintended consequences for untold future generations. We must each live our own life with what we have inherited and experience the human condition in which we each find ourselves, because God’s inborn spirit in each one of us participates in all of our life experiences – good and bad.

Evolution by natural causes really frees us from the mental chains of Theodicy –we need not nor should we anguish as to why God permits evil or diseases or death. God’s domain is the spiritual realm, and actively seeking spiritual enlightenment –evolution from being just material into becoming spiritualized beings – is our true path to reality.

Even though many of us suppose that ideally all things in this world of ours are happening under the direct control of a loving and omnipotent God, it is illogical to embrace total ignorance of reality – natural causes – once one gains scientific and spiritual enlightenment.

At the dawn of the first age Nature spent many billions of years to evolve a material system of stars and worlds that were devoid of life. Then there came a lesser stage but still a vast period of hundreds of millions of years to develop a world which could support life.

Not long after the formation of the solar system another planet or large asteroid collided with the Earth in passing and the tremendous energies released from the impact melted the world into numerous layers – the Core and the Mantle and the Atmosphere.

The atmosphere was composed of water vapor, helium, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and other gases and the core was molten iron and nickel, while the mantle was composed of silicates and basalt. The collision caused a large amount of the viscous mantle to separate from the Earth and begin to orbit the larger planet as the moon.

That event determined Earth’s future because the planet’s axis of rotation had been completely vertical until the collision caused the axis to deviate – now 23.4 degrees away from vertical.

That fortuitously places one side of the Earth in rotation nearer to the sun for half of the year-long orbit giving seasonal changes, and the lunar tidal changes enabled the ocean’s later living systems to begin to adjust as do all things in nature, because such changing environments on a world with atmosphere, water and carbon compounds enables life and its subsequent evolution and for them to survive and develop such natural upheavals are essential.

Then there passed another lesser stage of many, many millions of years to develop life itself, although at first it was life with only a very limited mental capacity

Once it had developed living creatures with a brain Nature continued towards the real objective and evolution after that means the development of consciousness, of mind and then of what is beyond mind. In our case it has been the development of the mental human being within the animal species so that its next stage will be to evolve and create an even greater spiritual creature out of humanity.

Evolution is slow creation and it cannot be considered completed until humanity has developed and reached its fulfillment which is the objective of human existence – to reveal in Matter and in Time and Space what was once self-held only in God’s eternal Deity Spirit Self. Into this world of evolutionary development something of the eternal Spirit has placed itself, has descended into the world to experience existence within material humanity, becoming the deepest meaning of the Spirit and of God within us and in the universe.

This reveals the invasion of the finite by the infinite. All things are what they are but they are not what they were because nothing can remain forever what it was but must evolve into what it can and shall be.

And what things shall be can be nothing less than the exceeding of their present imperfection into the ideal of what they have not yet become – that is evolution. But in human beings it may and must be something more than just that — humans must develop into their own destined reality in which their nature must reveal what is now concealed within them, their real Spirit self.

So this is our destiny – we must develop, create, evolve a mind in matter which merges with the Spirit and we must expand out of our limited sense of existence into freedom and infinity of existence. What we observe in Nature is that it constantly strives by evolution to exceed itself, to continually improve what has been created and accomplished.

Having achieved in the animal form of life everything which was up until then possible Nature continued working towards something more advanced than the animal and the human being is the present result.

The human’s greatness lies in their being more than an animal, and with the human being Nature has exceeded the animal and compensated for the animal’s deficiencies even in the region of the struggle for life – comparatively defenseless at first the human being has become the master of the earth, a sovereign creature.

The world we live in is not some meaningless accident that has unaccountably occurred in the vastness of Space. It is the scene of a purposeful evolutionary creation which is in the process of unfolding itself through the ages.

There is a meaning in our existence, a purpose in our birth and our struggles. The challenges we face are whether we will use our minds to overcome the physical and material problems we will confront while at the same time subjecting our minds to the Spirit by the power of our personal choices.

This freedom of choice allows us to decide our destiny. God’s challenges to them are the most significant thing that human beings can possibly know in their lifetime on earth and always is God’s challenge personalized and individualized – not a challenge to all of us but a challenge to each one, and always in terms of the individual’s capabilities and the needs of the particular person whom Our Father is challenging.

*Homo sapiens (Latin: “wise man“) is the scientific name for the human species. Homo is the human genus, which also includes Neanderthals and many other extinct species of hominid; H. sapiens is the only surviving species of the genus Homo. Modern humans are the subspecies Homo sapiens sapiens, which differentiates them from what has been argued to be their direct ancestor, Homo sapiens idaltu. Despite the challenges of identifying early humans, there are several candidates for the earliest known members of our species. Here’s a look at some of the top contenders:

Omo I and II (195,000 years ago): In 1967, a team led by Richard Leakey discovered possible Homo sapiens fossils in the Kibish Formation near the Omo River in southern Ethiopia.

Originally the fossils, Omo I (a partial skull and skeleton) and Omo II (a partial skull), were thought to be 130,000 years old, but a dating reanalysis in 2005 revealed they were much older – 195,000 years old – making them the oldest fossils assigned to Homo sapiens.

Over the last 45 years, the species status of the fossils has been debated. Researchers largely agree Omo I was a modern human; it had the human hallmarks of a flat face, fully formed chin, high forehead and globular braincase. They are less certain about Omo II, which was more primitive with its thicker, more “rugged” cranial bones and sloped forehead.

While some paleoanthropologists say Omo II is too archaic to be one of us, others suggest it’s evidence of the great physical diversity of early modern humans.

Herto fossils (160,000 years ago): Tim White of the University of California at Berkeley and colleagues unearthed three largely complete skulls, two adults and one child, in the Middle Awash region of Ethiopia in 1997.

The skulls appear quite modern, the researchers reported in Nature. But because certain cranial traits are outside the range of modern human variation, the researchers placed the Herto fossils in their own subspecies, Homo sapiens idaltu (idaltu means “elder” in the Afar language of Ethiopia). Cutting and scraping marks on the skulls suggest these early humans engaged in some sort of mortuary practices, as these types of markings are not typical of cannibalism.

Qafzeh and Skhul fossils (~100,000 years ago): In the 1930s, researchers working in the caves of Qafzeh and Skhul in northern Israel found the skeletal remains of at least 30 individuals, a few purposefully buried.

Some researchers suggest the fossils represent an early migration of humans out of Africa. But like Omo II, some of the fossils in the collection are difficult to classify. For example, the skull known as Skhul V had thick brow ridges and lacked a chin. The primitive traits in this population might have been the result of interbreeding with Neanderthals, which also lived in the region at this time.

Cro-Magnon 1 (30,000 years ago): This fossil is too young to be a real contender for the oldest member of our species. But it is included on the list for its historical significance. Discovered in France in 1868, the Cro-Magnon 1 skull was one of the first ancient Homo sapiens fossils ever found, demonstrating our species’ great antiquity.

The oldest known fossils of modern humans have been discovered in Herto, Ethiopia. An international team led by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found the skulls of two adults and a child dating from 160,000 years ago – 40,000 years earlier than the previous oldest remains of Homo Sapiens.

The discovery, described in the journal Nature, fills a big gap in the human fossil record; the absence of accurately dated hominid remains in Africa between 120,000 and 300,000 years ago. Is Homo Floresiensis a dwarf Homo erectus, the product of local evolution that has taken place over a period of at least 840,000 years in a confined habitat.

Scientists say there are two implications for palaeontology. Firstly they provide new evidence for the ‘Out of Africa’ theory – that modern humans evolved only in Africa and not in several places around the world. Secondly, says Clark Howell of UC Berkeley, “the fossils are unmistakably non Neanderthal and show that (modern) humans had evolved in Africa long before the European Neanderthals disappeared.

They demonstrate conclusively that there was never a Neanderthal stage in human evolution.”

The fossils come from Herto village in the middle Awash area of Ethiopia about 140 miles north-east of Addis Ababa – one of the world’s richest hunting grounds for palaeontologists. The Berkeley team and its Ethiopian colleagues have previously found pre-human remains there of the genus Ardipithecus from about 5.5million years ago.

They are some of the earliest hominids ever discovered. Chris Stringer of London’s Natural History Museum says the new finds “are complete enough to be identified as early modern humans, since they show the characteristic globular shape of the braincase and the facial features of our species. But both the adult skulls are huge and robust, and also show resemblances to more primitive African fossils”. The bones have been allocated to the sub-species Homo sapiens Idaltu.

Contemporary humans are Homo sapiens sapiens.

All three skulls show evidence of human modification such as cut marks, apparently representing mortuary practices rather than cannibalism.

Associated volcanic sediments were dated by a reliable isotope method to 160,000 years, while archaeological layers showed evidence of the butchery of big game such as hippopotamus and a range of stone axes and other tools. It remains unclear, however, whether the evolution of Homo sapiens occurred rapidly in only one region of Africa or was a more widespread and gradual process across the continent.

Although eastern Africa now has the oldest clear evidence of modern human origins archaeological finds suggest that southern Africa may have played an important part in the development of modern human behaviour. “So we will need further evidence from the whole continent to build up a complete picture of how our species began,” says Mr. Stringer. “Nevertheless the Herto fossils are landmark finds in unravelling our origins”
