y'know it's funny how we talk about certain fan reactions to izzy's death bc i watched the recent m*a*s*h documentary where they talked about abyssinia henry (an episode which kills off a major character) and there was a clip of the showrunner quoting angry letters he received after that episode aired:

'you tricked us' 'you sucked us in' 'we thought this was a comedy show' 'how dare you toy with our feelings'

this is a show set in the KOREAN WAR and people still felt a character death was a 'trick' and a betrayal. not only that but i cannot express how thematically relevant and important this death was for the entire thesis of the show. and yet they received 1,000 letters from viewers about it (though some were praising the episode, and it is overall viewed positively in retrospect).

idk i just found it interesting. this episode came out in 1975 and nothing's really changed.

What the everloving fuck was that. I just. I am devastated. Ok well I’m happy for Ed and Stede because of course I fucking am. But. What THE EVERLOVING FUCK.

Thoughts:

1- I refuse to let it sink in that a certain someone was gut stabbed and is now buried under a lovely cross (the unicorn leg, the scarf with the ring, get out stop). I will be anxiously awaiting the fanfic writers to fix this. Plz. I’m going to go on Ao3 immediately after I post this.

2- is that dream sequence of Stede’s actually foreshadowing? Because while Izzy does not die at his hand, Izzy dies due to Stede’s plan. Idk.

3- if Izzy doesn’t fucking haunt someone on the crew I’m done. He better show up like the Badmintons to call everyone cocksuckers or I sue.

4-Lucius and Pete got married and that brings me joy (in this pit of despair)

5- aw Ed. ED. I was cackling when he sucked at fishing and Pop pop was ready to fucking beat the shit out of him. Iconic. Also him just staring at the burning ships and being like “stede”. Stop. Also the I love you and the like I saw u do all that “cool” pirate stuff. And BABE. And THE LETTER.

6- Ed pt.2 IZZY AND ED. THAT SCENE STOP. While I don’t feel like Izzy should have died I think he was awesome this episode and definitely like came full character arc this season (the talk with our least favourite pirate wannabe and final words with Ed - I.e., Ed has so much family now. He can just be Ed)

7- Spanish Jackie being awesome and the bit about poison tolerance amongst the hubbies. I love her and the Swede and the Swede is finally getting some fucking respect and love and aw.

8- the seagull on Izzy’s grave. Hey buttons, love u

9- and the quad lives (shoutout to my lovely 4 Jim, Archie, Oluwande and Zheng Yi Sao). Also that moment between Zheng Yi and Auntie. Also Jim patching Auntie up.

10- ok gotta circle back to Izzy and the pirate wannabes chat and how much I love Izzy

11- how are we feeling about ep 8 Bonnet. I personally think he still needs some humbling. Idk because I’m happy about the progress he’s made re being made out to be a failure his whole life and coming to terms with that and becoming this more confident version of himself (I mean he had confidence from Day 1 but he was mighty plagued by all the Shit he went through in his youth). I enjoyed him “trying to protect” Zheng Yi when she wouldn’t run away when the navy because she was mighty fucked over losing Auntie and her crew (which my poor baby). Also I like Zheng Yi calling him out on his bullshit 24/7. But also idk I wanted him to like apologize or smtg because he was being a right dickhead the previous night. Also idk so happy Ed told Stede he loves him but like life’s a dick but so were u Stede… basically I love that Stede is unapologetically himself this season but also sometimes u do need to say ur sorry for being a dickhead.

12- the crew when Izzy died. The look on Jim’s face. Stop. I need to rewatch and look at Al their reactions but Jim’s caught my eye of the pain and sorrow because WE ALL LOVE IZZY NOW.

13- once again, Izzy better haunt someone or I sue

Hi friend! I appreciate your fighting spirit and hope for S3. As much as I'd like for it to be renewed, I think it deserves more than max would give. I'd prefer someone else to pick it up who would give them their 10 episodes and the amount of time they need.

Would it be more beneficial to campaign at potential buyers for a rescue rather than pleading with someone who's already made their decision? I feel like the BBC at least already had enough interest that they brought the broadcasting rights, and they have no problem with short running (3-5 season), 10-episode series. They also have an MO to run programming that is representative of the license fee payers.

Idk, as a UK resident this is the best scenario I can think of. I'm not as familiar with other companies, and I know viewer opinions do carry weight as pretty much everyone in the UK is taxed to fund the BBC. They have a televised show, Points Of View, which is entirely for people to contact with their feelings about currently airing programs.

I don't expect you to have the answer, just thinking out loud! (I did contact renewasacrew about this but haven't heard anything back yet). Regardless, I did contact the BBC myself saying why it'd be beneficial for them to rescue it the day after we got the news.

(They also have a good track record for releasing stuff on DVD)

Yeah, I agree that OFMD is too good for Max. To have a show do THAT well, and then receive a 40% budget cut for its second season, and then get canceled before it can complete its story? Insulting.

I have no industry knowledge, so this is me just wondering out loud, I keep going back and forth on what would be more likely, Max reversing its decision or another streamer picking it up. On the one hand, reversing the decision would be a blow to Zaslav's ego. Men like that don't like admitting they made a mistake. On the other, I imagine there would be more red tape to go through selling the show elsewhere? I don't know! I just wonder. And I just really want that final season!

I don't know a ton about BBC, but from what you say here, it seems like a solid option! And from what I've been hearing, reaching out to specific services (as opposed just tagging all of them in every post) is the way to go. Make it more personalized, make them see the benefits, etc.

Now that @asneakyfox has won me over, my preferred choice at the moment is AppleTV. There's an international audience, they don't seem as IP hungry as Max (Ted Lasso was also anticipated to be three seasons from the beginning, and that's what they got), they appreciate unique, quality shows that value storytelling that may not be picked up elsewhere, such as Severance. They don't seem as strict on run times, so it means we may be able to get longer episodes with Taika and Rhys doing bits! And there are a good amount of parallels between OFMD and Ted Lasso (feel-good comedies that go surprisingly deep, found family, discussions of mental health) that OFMD could very much fill that void Ted Lasso left behind.

But we'll see what happens! The important thing for now is to just continue making it clear how beloved OFMD is and how any platform would be smart to pick up a show with such a passionate, loyal fan base.

loving how at the start of last season the crew almost mutinied bc stede was a soft captain but now roach is out here embracing how all of them are "tender as hell."

ok im sorry but "he's our dick" does not feel earned to me. like they use that fantastic shot of the whole crew in episode 6 last season but what's crucial abt that shot is izzy isn't hanging out with the crew. he's sitting away in the corner monologuing abt how he thinks maybe ed might not want to kill stede.

i do think it's significant tho that jim wasn't there for izzy at his worst aka threatening to withhold rations for laughing at him. like they weren't part of the vote to mutiny against izzy. but frenchie was and frenchie was like "start with his leg see where it goes" which does not seem like he's really that invested in keeping izzy alive.

also it's weird how we don't see fang at all for this bit with hiding izzy in the walls. like he would be the one i'd expect to have the strongest connection to izzy bc he knew izzy before the show started and he was hugging and comforting izzy last episode.

anyway imo jim keeping izzy alive is more abt them missing when they were on the ship with olu and the whole crew and the ship was like a family, not necessarily abt feeling loyalty to izzy specifically. i could be wrong tho who knows.

one thing i do know is that it is VERY important to point out how jim is struggling really hard with everything, archie is not. she wasnt there for the co-captaining era at all and she seems to be rolling with everything like it's all expected. this includes the wedding raid and ed pointing a gun at her last season and stuff. even now she's mostly just confused by why jim is bothering to try and keep izzy alive. but she acts like the amputation and the violence are all what she expected.

ok i completely forgot abt this scene where the crew back on the Revenge is talking in the hallway before they go confront ed but i think it's rlly interesting how jim is the only one who says anything abt how ed's sudden cheery mood is NOT a good thing. fang is like "do we think he's better?" and jim's like "fuck no!" and frenchie's like "idk he seemed pretty calm to me." like this is so fucking juicy to me. jim knew this wasn't "better." i think this is because jim kinda gets it. they know what it's like to be told you're only meant for violence. and they know what it's like to want something softer. last season i probably wouldnt have said jim understood ed's suicidal tendencies but the way jim KNOWS that this isnt better makes me wonder if they understand this, too.

it is a pretty dramatic reveal tho. i didnt appreciate that the first time but holy shit. she's just pulling her ships all the way to the caribbean. girlboss.

SO GOOD. so I tried writing that for Chenford because we have yet to experience any true whump from established chenford now that they’re actually together and I wanted to write Tim losing it over Lucy being in danger!!

Love & Metachrosis - listen I love getting to write sort of higher concept fics and getting super creative with it, but this fic is none of that. it’s heartfelt as all my stuff is, but I’m proud of it for its comedy and humour. I genuinely did try writing it as a real scene from a (hypothetical at the time) season 2 episode of OFMD, and added in some comedy in there (I hope) so I’m proud of it precisely because it is super kitschy and silly and fun, but there is still a lot to sink your teeth into and it slowly sinks into the emotional stuff just like the show does. Idk, it was just the first fic I’d ever written for a show that is technically a comedy so I was really happy with the balance!

bonus points for my new chenford AU that I’m writing right now which is probably the best thing I’ve written and my favourite new idea, because I haven’t posted it yet but I still am so excited for it!! Title is TBD but @morganupstead knows what’s up (morgan it’s my superpowers fic and it’s coming along beautifully I totally need to send you the first two chapters or something because you kept me going with writing this)

i keep seeing that "yall couldn't even handle she-ra" post on my dash and if i don't say something imma explode

i hate that genre of post. i really do. this hatred is not directed at the people who make them, i understand the message yall are tryna get across, but the more i see "yall couldn't handle this very basic amount of nuance, you're not ready for anything deeper" the more irritated i get.

yes, a lot of people are not very media literate. a lot of people have embarrassingly deep-rooted madonna-whore complexes. a lot of people do not react well to moral grey areas.

but who fucking cares? it's annoying to see, sure. me and the block button have spent a lot of quality time together, especially after the ofmd finale aired. but like. why does one segment of the population reacting poorly to emotionally complex narratives and characters mean that people should no longer write them. because that's what those posts kind of imply, right? yall can't handle it so why should it be written. we don't deserve better stories because some people are assholes about it.

people being media illiterate jerks is kind of why we DO need more nuanced stories, no? the more disney floods us with thoughtlessly written corporate schlock the more people get used to that kind of storytelling and the less we get to see anything raw and real and emotionally resonant, because that's not what sells.

and idk i just think that like. it doesn't matter (on this particular front, not in general) that there are a lot of people who can't handle flawed female characters and messy queer stories. because if they don't like it, those stories just are not for them, therefore their opinions are basically worthless. and if the people asking for these stories are the same people who couldn't handle things with less nuance in the past, then maybe letting them see more will help them learn. maybe it's not about whether we as a collective audience deserve to see these stories, it's about whether someone wants to tell them, and it's about what we can learn in the process.

okay i finally downloaded Goncharov yesterday after work and my dash became obsessed with it and i watched it last night

I'm gonna go with ofmd for these because that's the one I have most opinions about right now (jsamn unfortunately populated only by impeccable content and delightful people, BOOOH).

This is also not going to be very bitchy, I apologise.

the character everyone gets wrong

Izzy, hands down see what i did there ehehehee, in particular the Izzy-Ed dynamic in a lot of fic. And I'm really not talking about stories where Izzy is a background asshole in an Ed/Stede romance and basically just a plot point; those are fine. But particularly in Izzy-centric and/or Calicohands fic I have actually had to filter out fic that had Ed in it on occasion because wow, have I seen some hot garbage there. I get that Izzy is a polarising character in general, but I really balk at fic that has to somehow paint him as Ed’s victim to make him worthy of sympathy? Excuse you, the man is a cunt, he’s insecure, cruel, and he is largely the architect of his own downfall at every turn, both because it’s a comedy and because it’s also baked into his insecurity complex. And I find that compelling, actually. I don’t need a fic explaining to me that, actually, Izzy has done nothing wrong and really, Ed is the cruel and manipulative control freak (???) to feel like Izzy deserves my sympathy as a reader. (And to be fair, the other side of the big Izzy-shaped chasm in the fandom isn’t much better because blegh, I get that you need a villain, but with the fervour with which some people out there are driving home the point that they think he’s The Worst Ever, they’re making Ed look like a hapless idiot in comparison, at the cost of plot and world-internal logic. And that is also BAD and I just can’t with that.)

Admittedly, some people have also gotten it deliciously right. So it’s not like everyone does it, but… you know.

(Conveniently, I have avoided writing that dynamic in detail altogether. Peace out. [Exit stage left atop high horse.])

4. what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?

I haven’t actually ever blocked anyone for fandom reasons that I remember. The worst I’ve done in any fandom was unfollow people, and the spiciest reason I ever did that for was that they were reblogging a bit too much (read: any) discourse onto my dash.

I have one (1) person muted on AO3 though because they were clogging up a very dear tag with their content that was decidedly Not For Me. And I’m purposely not saying which fandom/tag it was because that tag isn’t busy and I’m not trying to start shit, so… yeah. Sorry, I’m very boring on that front. :P No, I promise it’s not you. That person will never see this post.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how the fandom acts about them?

I think I’ve gotten pretty lucky with the (corners of) fandoms I’ve been in? idk. There’s always waves and trends of interpretation with characters and some are more my thing and some I grow tired of really fast, but I don’t think it’s ever affected my view or enjoyment of a character as such. But without trying to belabour the Izzy point above, I took several steps back from both writing and reading about him after being subjected to an avalanche of hot takes that just kind of killed the fun and the irreverent spirit of shaking the gremlin man for a good while for me.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

Idk about “common” fandom opinion, but it makes no sense for Ed to have a praise kink. His whole life consists of people telling him how great he is, and it doesn’t do anything for him?  That being said, have I read and enjoyed fic in which Ed has a praise kink? Yes. Yes I have. Several. Repeatedly. And it will happen again.

Also, while we’re here: Stede is not a good parent. I get that it’s comfortable and tempting to make him into a father who cares deeply, especially in AUs, and it’s not like I actually mind it in fic either (I have the daddy issues too, ok), but canonically, he’s the kind of occasional fun dad who does zero actual parenting and is never there. And by the same token he and Mary wouldn’t be great friends after their divorce, either, because they’re still fundamentally different people who have nothing in common,. That’s not magically going to change just because they’re no longer married. And again: I have absolutely enjoyed fics where these things were front and center, but as a fandom, I think we’re a bit too prone to sand down Stede’s edges when it comes to his family.  

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)   

The problem with this question is that I can understand why people like something most of the time, regardless of whether I agree, lmao.

BUT: I have stuck my nose and sniffed around in a lot of nooks and crannies of the ofmd fandom, but I remain benevolently baffled by Stede/Izzy (without Ed). (again, “so many people” in a fandom of this size is… maybe a bit generous, but I’ve seen it often enough by now to have paused to go “???” at it, so I’m counting it.)

8. What moment emotionally fucked you up the most?

i know it’s a moment that fucked us all up, but the final shot of ed really was a massive gut punch. like, no exaggeration here, it is THE reason i had to re-watch the show in its entirety the next day. and the day after that. because i needed closure but there wasn’t any, so reliving the happier moments of the season was as close as i could get lmao. i don’t usually have clear memories of the first time i watch something but i remember that moment hitting me like a bus.

10. What the fuck is Izzy’s problem? Is it/should it be fixable?

i mean it’s not really a fair question is it, he has MANY problems and they all overlap in horrible terrible ways lmfao. but obviously the simple answer is his very narrow idea of what it means to be a man & his almost religious devotion to maintaining those standards. like, yeah, he’s in weird codependent love with ed and that’s a big motivator for a lot of his impact on the plot but i feel like he’d be less shitty about that whole situation if he allowed himself to like. talk about it. or actually feel his feelings without dousing them in anger first. which, yknow, he can’t do because Toxic Masculinity. 

and. idk about “should” but honestly i’d love to see him grow as a person. i wanna know more about what made him the way he is (because no one just wakes up that fucked up lmao) and i wanna see him process whatever it is he needs to process. not just because i think it would be interesting to see but because i care deeply about ed, and ed cares about izzy. which is kind of a problem when izzy is such a mess that he’s taking everyone else with him. 

13. Did Ed really plan to murder Stede when he told Izzy the plan?

ldflgkj alright so i’ve made a post about this and also rambled a lot in the tags of some posts and my opinion about this keeps changing/evolving, but i think my answer has landed on like…not really? 

i think it’s definitely more complicated than ed having this master plan all along, and he was always planning to kill stede. like…that one post i saw that said the the scene where he tells izzy his plan is meant to mirror earlier, when he reveals that he had a plan to evade the spanish all along, he wasn’t just innocently pointing out cloud shapes, he was scheming. therefore we’re meant to read his actions throughout the episode as all having been part of his plan. and…i think that’s partly correct, but…also not.

imo that scene is meant to mirror his earlier Plan Reveal scene but not for us, the audience, for izzy. izzy is the one seeing ed pull off yet another masterful plot. ed’s renewing izzy’s faith in him. promising that he’s still the man he pledged to follow. because izzy’s just been saved by his tactical prowess, and so of course he’s going to buy that ed wasn’t just goofing off, having fun, it’s another “oh my god he had a plan all along” moment for izzy, because he wants to believe that’s who ed is. and the viewer is swept along with it, right up until the camera switches to an angle izzy can’t see, and we’re shown another layer. we see ed’s facade drop. 

and then we remember. his plan earlier didn’t work. he’s so out of touch that he didn’t even know what day it was. it wasn’t until him and stede came up with something together that they actually made it out. he’s spent the whole episode telling us that he doesn’t want to be blackbeard anymore, he doesn’t want to be the man with a plan anymore. this idea that he’s some ruthless puppetmaster, that he was just playing stede the whole time and everything he did was a ploy, that shit is all a performance, and one he’s getting worse at putting on. 

that being said there was probably a grain of truth to what he told izzy, i think he, on some level, wanted to be telling the truth, hence why he actually tried to go through with it (plus he just wasn’t ready to say goodbye to izzy i think, and there wasn’t really any other way of keeping him around), but i also think that he knew deep down he never would. i think that the plan wasn’t so much a plan as a series of intrusive thoughts that he hated himself for, even more so when he needed to use them to keep izzy from leaving him. 

17. Does Ed eat soap or just use “yummy” to describe scents?

i firmly believe that he just uses the word yummy to describe scents and i actually have…….way too many opinions about this ldkjlkdf

but if im tryna keep it short: there’s actually a lot of little moments throughout the show that tell us he just enjoys good hygiene. like, he was probably always doing everything he could to keep neat and clean it’s just difficult to do when 1) he had appearances to keep up and couldn’t go around smelling like flowers cuz that is not intimidating at all and 2) i doubt fancy soap was common aboard the ships they were raiding so like, where would he even get any of this stuff before he met stede. so i doubt he’d be wasting precious resources by eating them 😭
