I dunno, I don't have much to say about most of them. The character writing is... I wanna say it's a bit inconsistent?

Vi and Jinx are supposed to be the main characters but I actually kinda think they're the least interesting ones from a writing perspective. Vi is a pretty flat "punch my problems until they go away" protagonist without much depth to speak of.

And Jinx.... by the third time they made her do crazy eyes and drew a bunch of shit on the camera I was getting pretty tired of her shtick, honestly. They seem to make her randomly act exactly as sane or insane as the plot needs her to be, which makes the story feel like a bit of an idiot plot, in that the conflict would just be over if Jinx acted rationally for 3 scenes in a row. Not my favorite depiction of mental illness! Kinda rough.

Jayce and Caitlyn are pretty fun. They're both sheltered dumbasses messing with things they don't understand, but Cait at least goes out and sees what the Undercity is like. That said, she's a bit too trigger-happy for me. But that's why she's a cop, right. Jayce's idealism clashes with his bigotry in ways that make him pretty unlikeable in the back half of the show, but he serves his function well as a character that moves the plot forward at a steady pace.

Mel was a character I couldn't figure out for most of the show. She seemed like the sly manipulator type, but I wasn't sure what her angle was, if she wanted control of the council through Jayce, or what. Eventually I gathered that she's... mostly just a decent person who wants what's best for everyone. Which ironically made her less interesting in my eyes.

Heimerdinger and Ekko stand out as two characters I'd like to see a lot more of in season 2. Their roles in season 1 were somewhat minor, but teaming them up at the end was something I didn't see coming, and find very interesting. They're both essentially the "cool head" of their faction, so they mesh well.

Silco is.... fine? I was waiting for the eventual backstory episode that explained... anything about this guy. About his eye, about his history with Vander, anything. But nope. I feel like I don't understand his motivations as well as I want to. His love for Jinx seems genuine, which I wasn't expecting. He's mostly extremely competent... but he seems to slip up in ways that mostly just happen to be convenient for the story to happen the way it needs to. Again, bit of an idiot plot.

I dunno. Season 2 will prolly be fun.

there's one major thing that's been nagging on me about l&co adaptation ever since my first watch: if we were to get season 2, how would they set up the conflict of THB?

i can get behind some of reinterpretation of characters and their mannerisms, character traits (i.e. Lockwood dressing less formal and not being a know-it-all, Lucy being less hateful towards George, seeing Kipps as he's actively losing his talent, George Karim being iranian and being very close to his culture in a form of cuisine), some are good, as a fan of books i'd be eager to get to know these characters along side their book counterparts.

but alas, i can't see these characters as the same characters in both medias because too much of their characterisation was changed, and it's really hard to blame on pacing or the lack of screen time. it's the writing. some changes going as far as making me question, what were they supposed to do with this groundwork in the second season.

how would runners set up a conflict of L&Co overworking themselves after gaining fame over solving the bone glass case and accepting all calls they were getting, if show!Lockwood out right says in episode 4 that he's not interested in boring cases? not only does it get rid off of a major characterisation of Lockwood as someone who's, yes, in it for fame, but most importantly he became an agent to "avenge" his family. avenge isn't even the right word, i think. he doesn't want others to be fallen victims to a visitor, doesn't want to see other people lose their loved ones, lose their family to ghosts. not only does it make show!Lockwood rather vain and only fame driven, instead of someone dealing with deep personal trauma, but also loses one of the key points of Holly's introduction to the team. (i also love the reading of LW naming his agency Lockwood&Co as something less selfish and more about him paying a tribute to his family, that without them and visitors taking them away from him, he wouldn't start his agency and wouldn't be able to help other people.)

speaking of Holly's introduction, what exactly would have been her role at the start in the show? L&Co don't seem overworked from the 4 cases they had (2 related to TSS out of 4 in the book, Wimbledon gallows + Bickerstaff's, not counting Wilberforce's ghost and a bunch of not mentioned in dialogue cases i. e. Mrs Barrett's tomb). that already solves the problem of trio not having free time to do chores around the house. but say show says "and now they're overworked" instead of showing, sure, but it doesn't get rid of George's stress cleaning habit.

Holly was introduced as a help, as a support to the way L&Co was already running and over the books she became more than just an assistant but a beloved part of the team. without proper reasoning as to why Lockwood & Co had to get an assistant, Holly's introduction could be messy and unprompted, something like checking a box in the list of what has to happen instead of making it story driven. something like what happened to skull's character.

and a final thing that im iffy about is the ending of the first season. somehow show rushed through and speedran Lockwood's suicidal arc as well as managed to call it out by the end of show's TWS storyline, where books didn't show any progress even by the end of TEG.

but im saying call it out, not resolve. i'd actually appreciate it if show made an effort of showing that such tendencies and lack of self-preservation aren't just resolved in a second, someone saying "stop being suicidal" doesn't magically fix everything. and yet, show still speedran things, especially given that events of the show happen in only 10 days instead of a year, and Lockwood's already made very aware of his reckless behaviour aka throwing himself in danger for people, and, what's even more questionable, for people he barely knows. which, again, contradicts his character and the way he navigates trauma.

these character and plot deviations and inconsistencies may not seem critical at first, but they might build over the course of the series and lead to a complete shift in overall narrative and spirit of L&Co as a story. which i wouldn't want to see as a fan.

to put it simply, i can see why fans want for show to be picked up for a second season, but i can't see how writers could make it coherent because they wrote themselves into a corner.

I rewatched the episode a few times this weekend (how cruel of me) but personally the episode was just bad,

The opening call was reused from season 7. The editing was bad because of the CGI Mustache and then not trying to show buck too much because of the different hair style. Pretty that call was leaked earlier this summer. Not like the GA would know but still.

Also I feel like they built up the Eddie shaving the mustache and it was the best emotional thing but it was just very lackluster to me. I mean I think Ryan did a great job in those scenes but it just fell flat to me.

The writing was just bad as well. And just feel like it was writing was done so last minute and feel like a lot of acting wasn’t good to me.

Hopefully they get their act together soon

it was a weird episode all around, that’s true. eddie needed to vent to a priest for about 5 minutes and then he’s fine and forgiving himself? okay? the call from last season with the cgi mustache and the hair difference…. that took like 5 minutes of the episode so they didn’t need to write something else for it. it felt sloppy and it’s an overall problem with the pacing of storylines this season and even last season.

yeah so! here are some fake storyboards i've come up with for a few of the episodes i have plotted out! right now, i've only got about half the episodes with a rough plot, but i've written a crap ton of analysis for each character arc, episode, and overall narrative and how they could be improved, especially since i felt really... unsatisfied with the final season? it didn't feel like a satisfying conclusion to the characters nor story as a whole (due to a lottt of problems, but i think i've rambled about them for too long lol), so i plan to rewrite that fourth season through a mix of art and writing to attempt to give this show the impactful ending it deserves :]

been thinking a lot about tom & gerri since i posted that drawing. one of my favourite episodes - top five. i had started writing a fic for it back in april but it involved a lot of reading bukowski and him & i were not getting along, so i dropped writing it. i wonder if i should dig it out and do something with it: finish it, write something else based on it, use its images to illustrate something.?

Would love to know if you have any theories about why House didn't talk to Chase about trying again with the patient in The Itch? He says they need him and when Cameron says he won't do it and suggests House talk to him, House doesn't and it's a bit of a mystery to me as to why not?

According to House, it's because he can't understand Chase's accent, lol.

Sadly, I don't think there's a deep answer here. House is entertaining himself with two mysteries this episode: what's going on with Cameron and Chase (which is an interesting side topic in itself, because they were coasting along in complacency until House rolled a bomb in and strengthened their relationship), and why Taub suddenly has so much time to help out. Asking Taub to do the surgery gives House the chance to confirm his theory, as he says later on:

TAUB: And why do you think I’ll be doing [what you ask]? HOUSE: Same reason you did the surgery. TAUB: That was because it was an emergency. HOUSE: No. It was because your marriage is falling apart.

If I were to read more into it, I'd also say that Chase makes it pretty clear that he isn't super into this plan or helping House, and while House does like poking at Chase he… actually seems to respect his space, lol. Chase has boundaries now, and House doesn't push them much! If Taub hadn't been available, House probably would have reached out to Chase, but it isn't necessary.

Later on, Cameron does approach Chase for another surgery, although it isn't clear if House suggested it or not. I think it was probably on her initiative, though, as Chase points out the surgery she's asking for is impossible and she's really just there to pick a fight. House would also know the surgery is pointless, and unlike Cameron, isn't trying to make Chase mad so he can feel good about storming off in a huff, lol.

and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if those same things happen w ncuti's seasons. bc ppl just want the status quo (white male doctor) & excuse their discomfort by claiming bad writing when like. lbh w ourselves doctor who has never had Amazing writing. it has amazing actors, amazing characters, and the occasional brilliant episode/arc w a lot of dumb shit in between that ranges from kind of silly to so horrible it gives you a migraine. but that's kind of just. how the show is. it's not exclusive to any one doctor or showrunner.

Currently reading! I finished chapter one last night (which was a whopping 68 pages?? oof). So far, it's very episodic, with lots of little snippets compiled loosely, which makes it a quick read. I'm looking forward to the Revenge™.

Normally I don't like to vent online and keep this stuff to myself or tell friends about this. But I guess I wanna speak my mind and see if anyone else feels the same way.

For a very long time I want to make my own anime inspired show on the internet, I seen so many internet series and shows get popular and so on and I would love to do the same.

However there has been this problem that's been on my mind a lot lately, actually for a whole long while. I'm worried I won't be able to write a good enough story or characters.

I'm worried that I won't write good enough characters, I'm worried that the story won't be interesting enough, I'm worried that the romance especially it being queer will be too bland, I'm worried that what I make won't be good enough and so on and so forth. I worry too much of trying to please everyone and make everyone happy that I forget to make myself pleased and happy.

But if I can't make a good enough story if I can't please everyone by doing some different and unique then I'm just going to let everyone down. I'm better off just throwing in the towel and just give up, even though I don't want to.

I don't know what else to say because I rewritten this ending part of this post a few times as I'm struggling to explain how I feel. But at the end of the day I just wanna make art for the sake of making art even if it's not perfect I just wanna make something. I don't want to be popular or famous I don't even want a lot of attention I just want put my stuff out there without feeling nervous or worry about it. As a lot of the stories I wanna bring out to the world are in some ways personal and are fragments of myself into them, that maybe not everyone will understand.

I hope to whoever is reading this feels the same way too. Maybe not everyone will get this or understand it fully but I thank you for reading this threw to the end.
