1. Top 5 favorite horror movies?

in no particular order:

Black Christmas (1974) Dir. Bob Clark i think this movie is an absolute classic, and while the acting can be silly at times, i think its solid when it needs to be and i think the scares and suspense definitely hold up!

Saw (2004) Dir. James Wan anyone who has followed me for any length of time knows i love the saw movies LOL but the original saw holds such a special place in my heart. i do think its a genuinely good film with a solid story and good acting (yes even Leigh Whannell's acting) and i think that if you let yourself get immersed in the suspense of it all u can have a really good time (and its NOT anywhere near as gory as the film's reputation will have u believe)

Creep (2014) Dir. Patrick Brice i loveeee this movie so much. found footage is my favorite style of horror movie, and this is such an interesting premise for a found footage movie that i think was executed very well!! Mark Duplass' performance is incredible in this film, he freaks me out every time i watch it. (there is also a sequel, Creep 2 (2017) which is just as good in my opinion)

Rec (2007) Dir. Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza i do love a good zombie movie and rec is by far my favorite. its another example of a creative way to use the found footage style and i think that the acting and story are both really engaging, and it has a good mix of suspense and outright scary shit. (same as with creep, i love rec 2 just as much as i love the first one <3 however 3 and 4 are like. totally different movies which. i will not speak on here)

Alien (1979) Dir. Ridley Scott i know some people wouldn't consider this to be a horror movie BUT i would consider them to be wrong. i love this movie so much, its an absolute classic, what else is there to say

5. Underrated film(s)?

one movie that i absolutely loved that i dont think people talk abt a lot is Vivarium (2019) Dir. Lorcan Finnegan. its a weird one and i love it. the premise is fun and creative and its just uncanny and unsettling and i liked this movie a lot.

also!! 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Dir. Dan Trachtenberg is really good and pretty slept on. i love the suspense in this movie and i always love a good big scary alien

10. Horror movie(s) that made you love the genre?

not technically a movie but Marble Hornets the youtube series by Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage was a huge landmark in my own experience with horror. this one is special to me for like. sentimental personal reasons. but also because when i watched it for the first time, i had never seen anything like it. it was just so cool and original and it did scare me which was so fun! if u have a couple hours to spare and have never seen it before i highly recommend checking it out bc the whole thing is still up and free on youtube.

also Pan's Labyrinth (2006) Dir. Guillermo del Toro is another one that is very near and dear to me. it's also special to me for sentimental personal reasons lol but it's also the first Guillermo del Toro movie i ever saw and i just adore his work

19. Favorite 2020s film (so far)?

OGH this is hard because there have been so many good horror movies lately but i love love love Talk to Me (2022) Dir. Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou. the best way i've heard this movie described was by youtuber Mista GG who said abt this movie "they're not reinventing the wheel here, but that wheel? fucking wheels." and i couldn't agree more. it felt like such an instant classic to me in that it hit all of the typical horror movie beats in a very fun and fresh way

23. Favorite Body Horror?

i will admit im not very well versed in body horror yet!! its a genre im only recently getting into, so i dont want to say i have a favorite yet but!! The Bay (2012) Dir. Barry Levinson has some pretty cool body horror elements that i really enjoyed! i think this is a fun and kinda gnarly movie in general.

26. Favorite Psychological Horror?

hands down my fave psychological horror is Black Swan (2010) Dir. Darren Aronofsky i love how ambiguous and unsettling this movie is. and ofc if ur talking abt black swan u have to mention her predecessor Perfect Blue (1997) Dir. Satoshi Kon which is an absolute classic and is so beautifully animated and delivers that same sense of ambiguity and dread. (these movies are the epitome of why pit two bad bitches against each other to me. lets enjoy both of them together <3)

30. A fun movie fact that you like sharing with people?

OK THIS ONE IS EASY i love practical effects forever and ever amen and i especially love the practical effects in the saw movies!! almost all of the traps in the movies are fully functional in some capacity, but my favorite movie trivia is that in Saw 3 during the pig vat scene, the maggots that you see in all of the pigs and in all of the goop and all over Barry Flatman are real live maggots that had been sterilized so that they were totally safe to accidentally (or purposefully i suppose) ingest! here is a super fun video from the saw 3 dvd bonus features talking abt the making of the pig vat trap that talks abt the maggots

In Supersons we see a couple of kids that are implied to be Damian and Jon's children and the boy has laser eyes and can fly, so I asume he's not adopted. The girl, who calls Bruce grandpa, can also fly, btw. So it's canon (probably by accident) that Jon can have kids and he must have married one of Bruce's kids. spoilers for the batman (obviously)

oh my GOD. this movie was so spectacular. i think it was really incredible and better than the dark knight trilogy (i've heard like, weird dudebros say it's not as good so i want to say it) and i do think it's a movie that understands batman more than movies have ever before.

first of all, the movie didn't drag. three whole hours in the movie theater and i was on the edge of my seat the entire time! i didn't find myself bored or wanting to pull out my phone or anything the entire time. it keeps your interest and it doesn't let go, and amazingly it's able to do this without like, an action scene or a forced quip every other second (i'm vagueposting about the mcu right now). i think the main criticism i've seen in other reviews is that it was far too dark, or not funny enough, but i sincerely think it was fine. it was dark, yeah, but i did enjoy it and it added to the noir atmosphere. also idk why theyre saying it wasnt funny because i laughed at a few parts. the comedy was organic and not forced. it was fun!

bruce/batman himself was also such a good character. i liked that they strayed away from the ‘cocky billionaire’ bit and more into the ‘weird recluse guy’ bit. he is so obsessed with his city and the crime in his city and the fact that he pours himself into his work like this is very very compelling to me. instead of putting effort into keeping up appearances as bruce wayne, he really has himself convinced that he will not make a difference unless he lives out this fantasy of being gotham’s hero. nobody asked him to do this (and according to the prequel novel which i read for some reason, he really just made it up on the spot) and yet he realized that going out there and fighting will make a difference. WHICH BRINGS ME TO...

riddler! oh riddler. this boy. so something that this movie does expertly is explore the relationship between bruce wayne and gotham. rarely does a piece of media confront the idea that it is batman that created these monstrous villans, and yet this one does it so nicely. as batman rose, a confusing symbol of justice and vengeance, fucking weirdos also rise out of the woodworks and think they can do the same thing. one of my favorite aspects of the movie was riddler’s insistence that he and batman are one and the same, and that they were working together the entire time. it’s a reality that bruce can’t accept, the fact that riddler really just wanted to bring justice to the world that was cruel to him and becoming a masked symbol would be able to achieve this. 

the riddler is genuinely terrifying in my opinion. he’s scary in the same way that the joker from joker was scary. he was realistic; he’s some normal guy who wants to make a change and he will do anything for it, garnering a strong social media presence and effectively stirring up trouble. and when he’s unmasked... he’s a normal guy. he’s a forensic accountant. he lives a normal life by day, and is just a total freak by night. i thought that was really cool. in the past, these villains have been outwardly and openly weirdos, but riddler was literally some guy i’d see in a normal cafe or something (ordering a pumpkin pie).

i’ve seen people complain about his lack of flamboyance and sparkle. however, i believe that this new riddler works perfectly for the new age. he’s creepy, he’s realistic, and he’s a so interesting to watch. i love him.

changing the subject now, catwoman was excellent as well. the plot twist of her connection with falcone was insane. i loved watching her and bruce’s interactions the whole movie. i will say that i already adored catwoman and batman and their relationship, but seeing them in this fresher perspective was also just so, so good. zoe kravitz’s performance was jsut so so good, and i loved this new take on her character. she was new, and yet she still encompassed the same things that make catwoman catwoman :)

everyone’s performance was so amazing, and i havent even touched on jim gordon or the penguin. i can elaborate on them too, but i think this is getting a little long. thank you thank you thank you for asking!

Dean is an Abuser - Analysis

(tw: abuse, parental abuse, father abuse)

Note: Before anyone is like “Jenna u hav no idea wht ur talking abt” I am victim of parental, in this case fatherly, abuse. I just don’t want people to think I don’t know what I’m talking about and think I’m flinging the word “abuse” all around willy nilly. So LETS GO

I love! Long Exposure! So much! Mars is AMAZING at storytelling, pacing, and her characters are so easy to love? I love them? She’s amazing, please go tell her that!!

And now while all of us Love Mitch, Jonas, Sid, etc there is the Other spectrum with characters like Dean and Neil that we’re SUPPOSED to hate! And Mars is doing a spectacular job showing how the audience is Not supposed to side with them.

But, from an outsider perspective that doesn’t know subtle signs of abuse, I can understand why it doesn’t click right away that Dean is supposed to be an abuser. While there are those who dislike him, I sense some hesitancy calling Dean a downright abuser, and well STRAP IN because he is.

ALSO DIDN’T PROOF READ IT CAUSE I’M LAZY

Warning for some spoilers too if you haven’t caught up to the comic.

I’m aware that people may have “expectations” when hearing the word abuse. Furthermore, parental abuse, and usually, it’s associated with Physical Abuse. Which yes! It is a type of abuse that some children, unfortunately, go through. But there is more than just one type of abuse which branches off into Dean’s abuse, which is emotional, psychological, and verbal.

I’m gonna state this right now- Abuse isn’t a competition. Just because there are “much more worse cases” of abuse, that doesn’t mean anything. No victim should be seen as less just because someone else “had it worse.” The fact that abuse happens at all is terrible and it shouldn’t turn into a game of “but my experience was worse than this.”

So with that in mind, let’s talk about Dean, his need to be in control, and his verbal/emotional/psychological abuse. Lets go to when we first are introduced to him

Our first real appearance of Dean takes place in the morning, after. Dean repeatedly calls for Jonas but gets no answer in return, in that way, Jonas is not complying and answering to Dean.

He is not being compliant and then we get this scene. Dean shoves Jonas to get his attention, then continuously berates him. I think it’s a scene a lot of us forget about because it’s one of the first few pages.

“Did you hear me calling you? Or were you just too lazy to answer?” - the significance of this line shows a lot of Dean’s personality already. He wants to be answered to, he doesn’t like when people aren’t obedient around him. He doesn’t outright say Jonas is lazy but he plants the idea in his head that he is. He’s angry that Jonas didn’t answer him, which means Dean lost control for a moment but he regains it by verbally berating Jonas. Basically stating “you listen to me.” WHICH, IS NOT GOOD PARENTING.

“After all I’ve done for you and your sister? You think it’s easy?” - ohh man here comes to guilt trip. Dean is being manipulative with this line. He’s playing the “I’ve done so much for you and this is how you treat me?” card. He is making Jonas feel guilty, talking down at him, silently calling him ungrateful while also putting himself on a higher pedestal. It’s not rash to translate his words to “I’ve done everything for you and your sister and you’re being a selfish ungrateful brat. It’s so hard doing this but I do it anyways so you give me respect.” Manipulative, guilt tripping, and berating, all signs of abuse.

“Answer me when I’m talking to you.” - while outside perspectives may not see this as a threat, people that have a grasp of abuse signs do see it as one. It’s a demand, and it has an underlying tone of being threatening.

There’s also the body language and artistic choice of clearly making Dean seem taller, bigger, a powerful presence that disturbs the atmosphere, while Jonas is weak, doesn’t look Dean in the eye, overall submissive and it’s a very unhealthy dynamic between father and son.

So our first page with Dean we already know; he’s a dick. Lets look further.

At the end of Chapter 1, Jonas receives a text message from Dean which makes him leave hastily.

Why is this so important?

Maybe I’m reading too much into it but this really resonated with me. The artistic choice of the panels spoke louder than words.

The beginning panel displays a message that Jonas is getting, but it’s very close up, it shows significance. Something abrupt, a disturbance.

Then the second panel, honestly, it could have done without it but the fact that it’s there is another big shot in the chest. We get Jonas’s expression, worried when before he was angry, so the shift in mood is prevalent and important. But it also arises a question, what made Jonas go from angry to instantly worried, and upset.

The third panel displays the message. “home. NOW.” And as someone with an abusive parent, those messages are Terrifying. It is a demand, no other questions asking of your well being or where you are, it is a demand to make you come home. It inflicts fear on the victim, telling them to immediately get out of there before it gets worse.

And the obliviousness of Mitch is particular painful because usually, outsiders don’t know what kind of fear your abusive parent has flooded you with in less than three words. But it’s equally gorgeous storytelling, and very beautiful showing how Dean is clearly in control and superior to Jonas.

While brief, I still like this panel a lot because it shows another element to Dean. Sure, sometimes kids go out and are in places where they shouldn’t be without their parents knowledge.

And yes, this does allow room for some kind of punishment I don’t like how unsettling this is. Jonas was off with Mitch, yes, they were breaking into a research facility HOWEVER, no one else knew that. It was supposed to be a “gathering information for a science project” kinda deal.

He wasn’t at some wild party, or doing stupid shit (besides trespassing and hopping a fence but no one knew that) But still, if you don’t tell Dean where you are, even if it’s to do a project, he’ll inflict fear and most likely punish you for not doing so.

AKA a huge dick.

So we already have signs of him verbally abusing Jonas by manipulating him, subtly calling him lazy, and giving him commands like “answer me if i’m talking to you” and “home. NOW.”

But lets be real.

We really wanna get into Chapter 3, where the abuse is so clear it’s painful. And I’m not talking about the dinner just yet.

RING THE ALARMS!!!

This!! IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Jonas is actually talking about Dean in a negative light, he acknowledges that he isn’t the best dad but I love how he talks about him. He downplays Dean’s actions.

He starts off strong, “I know what it’s like to have a crappy dad” but quickly redacts it with uncertainty. He’s not taking back the statement but he’s also unsure about this opinion, undecided that Dean is a crappy dad, or if he’s normal and just so happens to be “pretty harsh.”

And this line, “He adopted me when nobody else wanted me though, so maybe I owe him.” THAT FOLKS, IS THE CAUSE OF DEAN’S MANIPULATION, PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE, AND GOAL AT IT’S FINEST.

We’ve seen from the beginning pages how Dean plays the “I’ve done so much for you” card and makes Jonas out to be the bad guy. Dean always compliments HIMSELF,  making him out to be such a great person who was there to father Jonas, and Jonas is the one being ungrateful. He’s psychologically conditioning Jonas to think Dean is superior and he is inferior and should respect him. 

Jonas believes he Owes Dean and WOOP, THAT’S NOT HOW PARENTING WORKS!! The child never owes the parent for BEING a parent, but Dean has conditioned him to believe that he should!

Moving on,

YYYYIIKKEESSS

What I adore here the most is how BRILLIANT mars executed Mitch meeting Dean for the very first time!!

The atmosphere changes DRASTICALLY. The page before was a bit more lighthearted, lighter shades of grey, and a background, but upon Dean entering, everything changes.

The children that were all mulling about having fun stop and look at Dean. Jonas and Mitch doing the same. They’re all turning to the one who is Superior. Dean is showing dominance, he is the control freak that changes the mood wherever he goes because he demands it.

And in the second panel it displays that even MORE with the dark colors, lack of background, and the intense gaze Dean shows. He is big, unapproachable, and clearly evil. Maybe a stretch but still, it’s an amazing introduction to a bad guy.

This part breaks my heart a lot because Dean doesn’t have to say Anything to make Jonas start talking.

Victims of abuse tend to try to explain themselves, A Lot. They try to explain their actions, why somethings the way it is, who they’re with, they ramble off immediately with their abuser not even having to say a word, instead just give them a look that has them panicked.

Jonas is starting to panic, he’s fearful of Dean, he doesn’t want to upset him and he wants to make sure if He’s okay with it.

What Dean is saying doesn’t sound... Threatening if you got it out of context.

It could be a genuine question from a curious parent but the way Dean is saying it, showing it, and expresses it, is very negative. But still, it’s a very causal question that Jonas feels the need to ramble about it Again.

Victims of abuse feel the need to explain themselves always, I can’t stress this enough.

It’s never “Oh yeah, we’re doing a project on the flood.” or “Yup, we were assigned as partners, that’s how the teacher does it.” Jonas has to go into detail, explaining what the project is, where he was, and why he was there, it can’t ever be a simple answer because Dean won’t condone that;.

Not to mention how jittery Jonas’s speech is, stuttering and the “uh” and ellipsis. He’s clearly nervous around Dean, especially with company.

This situation gradually gets worse with...

RED ALARMS RED ALARMS RED ALARMS

- Parental figure subtly insulting your weight

- Parental figure making a jab at your weight by insulting your eating habits

- Parental figure insinuating that because of you, you’re grossing people out due to your eating habits

- Parental figure being extremely subtle in wanting to control your eating habits by insulting and berating you in front of others, using said others as an excuse to humiliate you

People of all ages, this is emotional and subtle verbal abuse.

Not only that, but Jonas feels the need to Apologize for his behavior that didn’t need an apology! He’s so quick to believe Dean, thinking that what he’s saying is right and what he’s doing is wrong! It’s conditioning caused by psychological abuse!!!

You start to believe someone when they say it repeatedly to you because it becomes ingrained!!!

- HOMOPHOBIC!!!!!!!!!!! SHAMING JONAS!!!!! SHAMING BOTH JONAS AND MITCH AT THE IDEA THEY MIGHT BE MISTAKEN AS A COUPLE!!!!!!!!!!

I love how this is ALSO disguised as a “I know better than you” shtick because it’s something abusive parents use all the time.

“I just want you to be safe! People are gonna think something’s up!” Making Jonas believe that Dean wants what’s best for him but that’s not the case. He’s being abusive, taking control, and trying to make Jonas who he wants to be.

Dean says it himself, hiding his insults, demands, and being a TOTAL DICK behind this idea of “looking out for Jonas”

Again, he’s trying to make it seem like his word is superior, it should be followed, respected. He makes himself out to be Good which is some of the most Scariest abusers out there.

They seem so... Nice. So normal, and regular, they seem like true genuine parents that are looking out for their kids. You don’t notice his need for control and wanting to make others inferior because he hides it behind this message of being a good father.

Thankfully, Mitch doesn’t buy into it cause he’s seen this all before with his own abusive stepdad!!

When Mitch calls Dean out he has just disrupted the equilibrium of an abuser.

Dean who everyone’s looked up, respected out of fear of judgement, followed his every word, and was silent when he was talking has just been talked back to and he doesn’t know how to handle it.

Everyone looks at Mitch in shock because NO ONE has ever had the guts to talk back to Dean, the one who is in power. He is in control, and it’s painfully obvious so Mitch disrupting this balance is unsettling.

.... WHEW

Lets start with... The victims of Dean’s abusive behavior.

Jonas and Sue.

Jonas immediately tries to change subjects then goes so far as the grab Mitch and take him to his room. Sue tries to calm down Dean by calling him “dear.” Why? In this case, Mitch... Even though said very harshly, is in the right.

But the Victims are terrified of the abuser when he gets angry. They try to diffuse the situation because they don’t want outsiders getting to see the man that is Dean.

Either believing they “won’t understand’ are so conditioned and psychologically abused to believe they must not let anyone see their abuser being abusive, making apologies and excuses for them and trying to leave the scene.

I’VE BEEN WANTING TO TALK ABOUT THIS FOR 5 YEARS OKAY!!!

After Dean walks in on Mitch and Jonas, Dean doesn’t say Anything. He looks at them with a shocked face and then slams the door shut.

Let’s think of this scene in a different light. A parent walks in on their kid and their “friend” in a compromising position. In a fit of embarrassment for all parties, the parent slams the door shut because OH MY GOSH I JUST DID THAT!!!

Well, that doesn’t fit the bill for this because Jonas reacts with Fear.

Jonas very quickly is thrown in a panic. Dean didn’t even have to say ANYTHING but Jonas knows hes in trouble and he’s gonna suffer the consequences. He wants Mitch to leave as soon as possible not because he’s angry with Mitch but because he’s Scared of what Dean might do to him.

This may seem weird but often times.... Victims of abuse don’t really... Want outside help in the heat of a moment.

They don’t want to make anyone experience the wrath of their abusive parent. It’s a need to protect others for not witnessing what the victim goes through every day and a lot of the times, a victim feels Embarrassed by their parents actions and want to hide them away, deal with it themselves. He makes Mitch leave because of this.

.... HITS HOME.

This page, hurts a whole Lot.

The silence, tension, fear of having to approach your abuser and explain yourself. Dean only has to stand there and looking menacing and it’s enough to make Jonas panic.

Again, Dean doesn’t have to start a conversation, Jonas does, trying to desperately explain himself. He is being submissive, inferior, and weak to his abuser and it’s crushing.

The paladins are red cloaked travelers, except for Shiro, who is a white cloaked traveler (more on that later).

Keith is the main character

He meets Hunk in the Bridge

Keith pretty much has a solid goal that is to reach the Mountain, though he doesn’t know why. He just feels like going there, like he’ll learn (or remember) something important if he does.

Hunk doesn’t have a clear goal like he does. Instead, Hunk spends most of his time in the Bridge. He is fascinated by the murals and the story of those who came before. He spends most of his time trying to decipher it and helping other travelers through the Bridge. He rarely crosses it himself though.

Keith meets Lance in the Descent.

Lance is very unique in that he manages to goad Keith into competing with him. Lance is the only one out of all of them who can manage to make Keith forget about the mountain, even if momentarily.

For most of the Descent, Keith and Lance have an amicable race to the bottom (the Tunnels).

It’s one of the few moments throughout the journey where Keith genuinely has fun.

Lance… never follows Keith after they reach the door to the Tunnels. He also never watches the memories of the those who came before. Keith never asks him why and Lance is glad that he doesn’t.

Lance is really scared of the those who came before, though he’ll never say it. He is also really scared of the Guardians roaming the Tunnels (he’s pretty much a case of “BEEN THERE DONE THAT”, LANCE WILL NOT RETURN THERE EVER. Scared is putting it mildly, Lance is heavily traumatized by them).

Much like Hunk, Lance is (seemingly) without a goal. There is more to it than that though (more on that later).

Keith meets Pidge at the Temple.

Pidge is… not okay. Pidge is visibly fidgety. Keith is concerned.

She carries a lantern with her and she’s very interested in the murals but Keith can notice right away the differences between her and Hunk.

Hunk was more into it casually. He loves studying the ruins. Pidge? It’s like she’s in the brink of finding out the whole truth to the universe and she’s so stressed out she’s like a college student during the last month of their last semester. Keith’s pretty sure he saw her running ahead at some point to puke.

Unlike Hunk, Lance and Keith, Pidge already knows the history of the civilization that came before them, though not much. She simply knows of their existence and she knows that shit happened. She’s desperately trying to find out what it was. You could say that is her goal.

Finally, the Mountain. Guess who’s there. Take a wild fucking guess who the final person Keith meets is.

Shiro is… tired.

You do not fuck around with him and you do not fuck around with the Guardians in this area.

But if a Guardian finds someone, Shiro will literally do anything in his power to protect himself and his companion. He willl damn well fight the damn Guardian if he has to.

Shiro doesn’t talk. At all. He doesn’t have any passions like Hunk, he doesn’t have fun like Lance and he does not care for the history of the ancient civilization like Pidge. He doesn’t have a goal like Keith. Shiro is just there and he will sit down and wait for his companion at the base of the mountain then guide them to the summit. That’s his whole purpose.

Bonus: Allura and Coran as the ancestors

So about those things I said I would talk about later. Let’s talk about them.

Journey is about reincarnation.

The order through which Keith meets each of them is always Hunk ⇾ Lance ⇾ Pidge ⇾ Shiro

In Journey, you acquire the white cloak after getting all the glowing glyphs in the game. Unless you’re using a walkthrough, you most likely won’t get all the glyphs in your first playthrough, which means you’d have to play the game a couple of times to get all of them. Which brings us to:

Shiro. He’s a white cloaked figure because he has been through the Journey so many times that he’s already acquired it. Out of everyone, he’s the one who has reincarnated the most.

That is also why he has the complete golden embroidery on his cloak, which increases with each reincarnation.

Guess who else has the complete embroidery? Pidge. Yup.

The reason Pidge is stressed and nearly freaking out? Because she’s the closest (aside from Shiro) to remembering the truth. About the ancestors, about the journey, about the reincarnation process. Pidge is very close. She knows the truth is gonna change her forever and not in a good way, which is why she’s so scared of finding it, but also too curious to stop. She must know.

Shiro is the only one who actually knows.

It’s also why he always sits by the mountain. He has no reason to move on with his life and reincarnate again.

He has no reason to journey again.

So he sits. And waits. And guides whatever companion comes through the gate. But he will not reach the summit with them.

He’ll always come back and return to his starting point.

Every time someone reincarnates, they forget about their journey, but the memory is not lost, just hidden. This brings us to an eternal cycle where each traveler will journey, reach the mountain, die in the process and reincarnate just so they can journey again. For better or for worse, Keith, and to an extent Pidge, are the only ones currently going through the reincarnation process.

As mentioned before, Shiro is not.

Lance doesn’t know about the truth, but he realized that he doesn’t want to know.

Which is why he won’t go further than the Descent.

Like Shiro, he’s stopped reincarnating, but unlike Shiro, he’s much “younger” since he hasn’t been through the journey enough times to comprehend the truth.

Because of that, he retains the red cloak and only the first stripes of the embroidery.

Lance is smart enough not to go through it, but in a sense he’s just as broken as Shiro. Lance blocks all references as mentions of the reincarnation process as a safe measure.

This allows him to live happily having fun in the Descent.

Hunk is quite possibly the only traveler out of the five of them who Does Not Give A Shit™.

He has a vague sense of the goal (reaching the mountain), but he doesn’t really care for it. He’s the least aware of the reincarnation process and really, he just finds the ancestors too fascinating to move on.

He may or may not have reincarnated before, but if he ever did, it was even less than Lance. Hunk may even go as far as to the mountain (and thus he’s met Shiro and knows about the others too), but he always comes back rather than climbing to the summit. Due to that reason, one could also say Hunk is, so far, the happiest of them all.

Will Hunk ever learn the truth? Maybe. Maybe not. No one knows.

Back to Pidge, she mostly spends her time in the Tunnels and at the Temple, but also has reincarnated enough times that she’s close to the truth.

Shiro will not show any emotions whatsoever at anyone that comes through the gate, aside maybe from Pidge. He’s eerily fond of Pidge and is specially more protective of her than anyone else. He still won’t say a word to anyone though, including Pidge. With Shiro, it’s all in his gestures and actions.

Lance is terrified of the Guardians because, unlike the others, Lance has been killed by them the most, which left him with a very broken soul.

The reincarnation process can only be achieved by reaching the summit of the Mountain. When you die before reaching the mountain, like being killed by a Guardian, you start as a clean slate.

This means that had Lance never been killed by a Guardian, he most likely would be an old soul just like Shiro, but because he always breaks the process and starts as a clean soul again, he always forget everything. Think about how Korra interrupted her connection with the past avatars, it’s similar to that.

Shiro and Hunk are the only two who have never been killed by a Guardian, ever.

Pidge has come close to finding out the truth many times before, but got killed by Guardians whenever she was close and had to start from the beginning.

In a sense, one could even argue that it’s thanks to the Guardians that she’s not as broken as Shiro or Lance. Every time she starts as a clean slate, she’s just as happy and unaware as Keith and Hunk, which gives her some time before she starts getting close again.

Shiro can tell just by looking at her, whether she’s an old soul reaching the truth or a new born one that has been killed before.

He knows.

And every time Shiro sees her coming close tot he truth, he wishes he could tell her to stop. He honestly does.

Keith and Shiro work really well together. Out of everyone, Keith probably enjoys journeying with him the most, though he’s not sure why.

Keith sort of feels sorry for Hunk. He sees reaching the mountain as the only “acceptable” goal and doesn’t understand why anyone else would think differently.

So seeing Hunk happily having a good time in the Bridge without moving forward is not a good thing in his opinion, though Hunk begs to differ.

Pidge is the only one who shares his goal (although differently - Keith wants to reach the mountain for the sake of completing his goal while Pidge reaches for it so she can learn about the ancestors in the process), so he can easily connect with her the most.

Keith does not understand Shiro either, but rather than feeling sorry for him, he is sort of… scared. One look at Shiro and he knows that Shiro has seen some shit and he’s not sure how to feel about that.

Something about Shiro just exudes fear of reaching the mountain. It’s rare but every once in a while Keith will come back to the temple upon seeing Shiro at the base of the mountain. Sometimes that fear speaks louder. It’s very rare for this to happen though.

There’s something about watching Pidge work on her findings that deeply scares Keith. He’s not sure why. He wishes she would stop, but even when he asks her to, she doesn’t listen. She has to know.

As the last “living” souls of the ancestors, Allura and Coran guide the travelers through the desert and to the mountain. They want them to know of their history, which is why they left the memorials, tombs and murals around the desert.

To Allura, the only way they can keep alive anymore is because people still remember them, still know about them. She dreads the day all five paladins will stop journeying altogether, and forget about her and Coran.

When that happens, they’ll die.

This is a good time to remind you that Hunk, Lance and Shiro have already stopped reincarnating, though for different reasons. Pidge is nearly there, one more push and she’ll learnt the truth. In a sense you could say they’re only alive because of Keith, so Allura and Coran guide him the most.

They are tasked with reviving the travelers every every time they die at the mountain. They can’t touch the traveler outside of the mountain, since their soul is bound to it, so if someone dies or gets killed in the Tunnels or Descent, they can’t do anything for them.

There is a lot of content, but I think that’s most of it.

Things to consider:

How many times did Pidge come close to the truth but didn’t reach it because she got killed by a Guardian?

And how many times did she find out the truth but forgot because she got killed soon after?

Do you ever stop to think about Shiro thinking about committing suicide by throwing himself to a Guardian just so he will forget? Because yeah, I think about that a lot.

okay basically .. hyun was born in daejeon, south korea, to a relatively poor family. his father worked in a low level position in an office, and his mother was a homemaker. he had one younger sister, and honestly, they were never that close — all of them. money was too tight for his father to ever spend time with them, his mother was high strung and just didn’t have a kind or ‘motherly’ personality, and he just had nothing in common with his sister. it was kind of like ... living on an island.

despite this, hyun had one desire: to be happy. he saw the path to happiness, as per general korean culture, through backbreaking hard work. he couldn’t ever articulate exactly why, but he always knew, even as a child, that he’d need to be the best, because he’d have a lot to prove.

and that was the truth, more or less. he was always very smart, and wherever he fell short, he was an even harder worker. he was detail-oriented, obsessive and would do whatever he had to to get the job done, and that did him good in his life! he went from a public elementary school to an exclusive private school on scholarship and, in high school, was sponsored to study abroad in america.

in america, he continued to work hard and achieve high grades. he learned to speak english fluently, and, in general, had a better time than he did at home. his homestay sister was a nice lesbian girl named serena, who had bright red hair and sewed homemade patches onto her jeans, and they became very close friends — which was rare for hyun, as he never really was good at making connections. while he remained very studious, he also started hanging out with serena’s friends, most of which were queer. this got him thinking about his own identity, and over the two years he spent abroad, he realized he was trans.

when he got back to korea for the final year of high school, he came out to his parents as trans. they rejected him, but, in the nature of korean conservatism, told him he was allowed to live in their home and remain their daughter until he graduated high school, as they didn’t want to make a spectacle of themselves. 

knowing that his time with a family and a roof over his head was limited, hyun redoubled his school efforts, since the situation was quickly becoming dire. he ended up graduating with the top marks of his school, and full scholarship offers from all three sky universities. he ended up at seoul national university.

eventually, he graduated, and decided he wanted to move to america. he started applying for work there, and found a job in a fashion magazine based out of new york. that’s where his host family had lived, and when he told them, they invited him to live with them again. he took that opportunity readily.

there’s something to be said about hyun’s work ethic. he started at this magazine as a glorified assistant and, by the end of his time there, had worked his way up to a significant member of the publicity team, having created several successful marketing campaigns. after his biggest advertising campaign, he was contacted by a large san francisco-based cosmetics company to work as their coordinator of social media.

he didn’t realize what kind of commitment it would be when he took on the job, which far outpaced all of his previous work, both in korea and at the magazine company. he ended up directing his own small department, and was at the office from early morning ‘til late at night, even staying over on busier weeks. still, he wouldn’t trade it for the world. this is the path to happiness and fulfilment. someday, all this work will pay off. it doesn’t matter that he can’t hold down a relationship and has devolved from serial monogamy to straight-up one-night-stands. it doesn’t matter that he’s being worked to the bone and severely under-compensated for it. he’s doing what he loves — working hard and being challenged, and if this is what he has to do to climb the ladder, win the game — he’s going to do it.

so that’s his background .. as for his personality:

super type a does everything he can and, above all, does it well . SUCH a perfectionist and doesn’t take failure well bc .. he’s never failed

incredibly persistent !! he’s had so many doors slammed in his face that he now knows when to jam his foot in the door and how to keep a straight face through the pain

SUCH a slytherin just ... incredibly so ... definitely ambitious 100% cunning and honestly he’s lookin out for #1 that’s just the way it is

kind of twitchy and definitely high strung ?? while he can roll with whatever curveballs are thrown at him, he doesn’t take things not going as planned .. well .. in a surface way . he’ll get shit done but he’ll be swearing angry korean under his breath nd freaking out the whole damn time u better belieb

he’s this weird dichotomy between extremely professional and extremely outspoken .. he’s always ready 2 read a bitch but u aren’t gonna know you’ve been read for like a hot minute until he’s already moved on bc it was just so neutral and factual sounding

cannot STAND people with poor work ethics , or people who are really privileged or , the worst in his opinion , lazy rich people . he’ll tell them off . he doesn’t give a fuck . he had to fight tooth and nail for everything he has in this world and if it was handed to u and u don’t even do anything with it then what use do you have ??

hyun doesn’t have many friends and like the one friend he does have he doesn’t even really like as a person ... but when he decides ur one of his he’ll die for u tbh he’ll give u the clothes off his back he’ll go out in the middle of the night to bail ur ass out AS LONG as he thinks you’d do the same 4 him

huge commitment issues tbh like he genuinely doesn’t think he can have a functioning relationship which .. at this point .. is probably tru BUT that’s more bc of work than his personality yk ?? anyways .. most of his relationships now that he’s stopped trying are just him going out after work, getting drunk , and having meaningless hookups which is honestly fine w him where he is in his life rn
