tuesday again 4/2/2024
in which i try to clean two different boxes with varying success
new people: hello! the tuesdaypost is a weekly roundup of stuff i've been listening, reading, watching, playing, and making. it is NOT a recommendation series, although i sometimes dabble in critique. when im firing on all cylinders i ask "what is the core concept of this? does it succeed in what i think it's trying to do and what it says it's doing?is it well-made but i dislike it/beautiful but not for me? why? what parts Really Work?"
if you are into purity culture, yelling at other people about the problematic media they consume, or are under 18 i am going to have very little patience for you.
listening
Tumblr media
now that i live in houston i am legally obliged to loop the new beyonce album 24/7. there is absolutely truly nobody fucking doing it like her. every song is a multimedia art piece. goddamn do i miss the album as a tool to convey a specific concept/listening order/flow. sometimes (chappell roan most recently comes to mind, although it does feel unfair to compare anyone to beyonce) every individual song is pretty good but the listening experience if you sit down and listen all the way through the album is unpleasant and choppy. not so here. NEVER here.
my favorite like Dance Number is YA YA (it samples nancy sinatra's boots! and the beach boys' good vibrations! wildly different tones despite coming out a year apart!)
youtube
the one that goes on four different character/tone playlists is BODYGUARD.
youtube
great early roundup of influences, samples, and collaborators. delighted to see five fingers for marseilles listed, a rocky but underrated south african neo-western free on tubi rn for americans

reading
also very texas-relevant with the recent pornhub lawsuits! pornhub and sex tech (among other things) have been samantha cole's beat for almost ten years. i trust her to report sensitively and not for like. shock clicks
this site has a free paywall (sign up with your email for a link to the full article) so bots have a harder time scraping articles: this is a journalist-founded site with only the four founders running it and writing articles. while annoying i do think this is a reasonable measure
The platform still has problems, but after years of critical reporting and a litany of legal and reputational consequences, Pornhub is now more heavily moderated than any other porn platform, and most major social media platforms, for that matter. A growing list of age verification laws has put Pornhub in a position where it is compelled to block access to its site in seven states and counting. In theory, these laws are designed to prevent children from being able to access pornography online. In reality, what is going to happen is that children are going to end up on pornographic sites that don’t care what the law says, and where some of the most harmful content that exists online is actively promoted to them.
she's also got a new limited series podcast with CBC about the rise and fall of pornhub, which was fascinating and kept me company during an extremely early morning drive

watching
i'm lukewarm about this one but i spend a lot of time getting there, much like this movie
Tumblr media
ive been watching a lot of frankly dogshit thrillers, which has made me wonder: what's the deal with supervillans? where did they come from? and thence arrived at the prototypical film Dr Mabuse the Gambler (1922, dir. Lang). the four and a half hour cut on Kanopy is two normal-length movies superglued together, which makes sense as a streaming product but it is sort of a terrifying runtime and took me three days to get through.
sometimes, as we know, i get a real bee in my bonnet about visiting the early versions of things. dr mabuse is the blueprint for every james bond and mission impossible villain, or really any shadowy supervillain with power over [INDUSTRY] or [THE MARKET]. it is a four and a half hour long cat and mouse game through lavish, eccentric sets between mabuse and prosecutor wenk. it has some trouble sustaining itself bc it is four and a half hours long but does deliver on the cat and mouse aspects. this letterboxed review has interesting things to say about the political climate of 1922 germany and how lang subverts the formula of the pulp serial.
really the film opens with mabuse yelling at his cocaine-addicted assistant, but the film properly gets going with mabuse's henchmen stealing a trade agreement (nothing really carbon dates a movie more than a missing trade agreement. vanishingly few post-early-30s movies have missing trade agreements as plot points) and then he crashes the stock market. for fun and profit.
however. i think every time you see an evil man who is a banker or stockbroker or generally uses money as power you have to interrogate whether it's antisemitic. the answer here is "maybe" but i'm not sure if intent matters when contemporary nazi critics were eager to hold mabuse up as "this is the typical jewish criminal". (sorry about the link directly to wikipedia, it's been touch finding online sources for this section). mabuse is not specifically jewish, but there are certainly elements of stereotype. i am still not good at being presented with "this movie has a shadowy behind the scenes figure manipulating the government and all the money ever" and going "hey wait a minute".
after that tremendous glaring caveat, for which i read more contemporary reviews and reviews in general than i ever read for movies in these posts, is it good? eh. a contemporary VARIETY review remarked (and i largely agree)
The direction of Fritz Lang has moments – but Lang somewhat negates his good technical effects by twenty forty-word captions of a ludicrous unconciseness.
the night scenes are particularly well done, and imo are better than many modern night scenes--other contemporary reviews remarked
In this film the techniques of the film camera (Carl Hoffmann’s brilliant photography) are brought to perfection. The problem of how to film lit-up streets at night has been solved for the first time. It is unbelievably impressive to see the glaring lights of speeding cars flash through the night or the rapid passing of an elevated train of the initially blurred, then gradually focussed glimpse through a pair of opera glasses on to the variety stage, the nuances of light and shade—these things alone prove the value of film documentary.
look at this shit! filmed from within the cars! in 1922!!!
youtube
this film asks you to believe hypnotism is real and really effective, so i don't think it's that big of a leap when it asks you to believe in ghosts. i don't understand that quibble from contemporary viewers. there are several on screen suicides with like. specific methods. which is not currently regarded as good filmmaking practice. im curious to know what contemporary audiences thought but couldn't immediately turn anything up, and wading through masters’ theses on cinematic suicide is a little beyond my current mental health.
if i were a more content-minded woman this would turn into a clickbait video essay about the antisemitic origins of every supervillan. however i am unqualified and untalented at video editing and i'm sure there are forty theses on this already. this movie is a hard sell to anyone jewish or employed. it is also a stunning example of cutting-edge film technology and part of the genesis of the modern supervillan. Fritz Lang films tend to fall in the category of “movies i am happy to see once and feel no need to revisit”.

playing
playing what is effectively the same game three times back to back (breath of the wild, tears of the kingdom, genshin impact) has sort of burned me out on open world games with a focus on battle skill progression and stumbling across little puzzles in the overworld. i have to get itch.io up and running on this pc and find the most linear jankiest possible one-sitting indie thing. or several of them. i might try the solo ttrpg Gentleman Bandit i seem to have acquired in one of the giant charity bundles
Tumblr media
brief breath of the wild update bc i don't want to pull screenshots off my switch: i have gotten to the boss fight for the gerudo and goron regions, have not completed them bc my focus in this game is NOT hearts, and am in the middle of the zora temple. despite the quality of life improvements and new regions in totk i think i prefer botw: progression is a bit easier, there are fewer mmo-style hub quests and repeatable quests. things like the stable photos are cute but very repetitive, so are the sign bracing puzzles, and the sky crystal quests for sky shrines feel VERY samey. also dislike how the CLEAR OUT: [REGION] quests with the monster suppression squads reset at the blood moon.
anyway! to genshin! there was an exceptionally fun little event with a surprisingly involved management sim tacked onto the game??? you make and sell potions fulfilling different requirements, and can eventually stock travelling merchants all over the continent. the actual act of making the potions was this block-filling 1010! style thing (screenshot from polygon)
Tumblr media
the new region, a port town and tea-growing area called Chenyu Vale, is maybe the prettiest one in the game so far? it's the one that feels the most picturesque and Designed, like this is one huge mansion garden studded with follies. they also added background chatter and noise in the cities and towns, which really startled me and makes them feels much more lived in! this is a fun trick to avoid putting in a thousand NPCs and making everyone's framerate crash. the less stuff in your game, the less shit can go wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also pulled for and got chiyori, a geo-aligned seamstress (and sometime spy???) swordswoman who has what i can only call domme voice

making
ok now we'll talk about boxes. i was rearranging my kitchen, as unemployed women are known to do, and noticed this recipe box i picked up back in mass was disgusting. the finish is starting to fail but it was genuinely grody and last summer i packed my kitchen in a blind panic inside an hour and did not have time to address it. i have never seen a recipe box at an estate sale before or since and it made me desperately sad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it was full of a lot of stuff.
Tumblr media
i went at it with a somewhat inadvisable combination of things: wood soap didn't budge it, so i dampened a paper towel in vinegar and wiped it down in the vain hope it would do something. the thing that worked, and would be inadvisable for anything veneered or less densely textured, was baking soda paste and the scrubby side of a sponge. it still smells Very musty even after 48h of loose baking soda inside with several changes, but that might be partly the recipe cards' fault. i would like to refinish this at some point but i don't have polyurethane on hand and the fun little project budget is empty until further notice/i get a job.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the hinge did rust a bit despite my best efforts but that has since been lightly steel wooled and oiled. a well loved object! it's possible the lady who died just fucking sucked and that's why literally her entire estate including many other things families usually keep was on sale, but i would like to think perhaps she simply had no other family? a well loved/used object even if all the recipes are for semi-horrifying fifties new england recipes.
Tumblr media
the other box, pre-acids but post-washing: this topp trading card box with seven episode one packets of cards was intact with the original seal. i have verified it was not worth much more than the $5 i paid for it with the trading card obsessed man in my best friend's husband's friendgroup. i bought this three months ago but the man was unavailable to open it until uhhh last week. some sort of liquid got inside it at some point and it was super corroded. i was going to store embroidery floss in here but even with all my powers (barkeepers friend. brasso.) i cannot completely remove the corrosion. it's not corroded Through but it looks bad and feels rough. so it goes. it'll probably hold the tiedown straps in my car bc that plastic bucket is rapidly failing

Submitted prompt:
When Adrien has his outburst and quits being Chat Noir, the ring ends up in the hands of someone new after a crow picks it up and brings it to a human who feeds him regularly. (Crows do that with humans who are nice to them, sometimes.) This person is Célestin Rivage, a trans boy who is an up and coming fashion designer. He’s active on social media calling out the industry’s problem with underpaying workers, using sweatshops, and other awful practices in the fashion industry, someone Marinette follows and thinks is nice but doesn’t have a crush on. She wants to be a sustainable fashion designer who makes things that last and that contribute to the anti-fast fashion movement in France, so she follows his Tiktok and YouTube, uses some of his tips on how to spot poor craftsmanship and signs a garment was made with unethical labor, etc.
Célestin is not sure he’s the right choice for a superhero. As he tells Plagg, he’s got real concerns about if he can do superhero duties, schoolwork and his part time job correctly without neglecting some aspect of it. But since he’s moved to Paris and Paris has akuma attacks, it would be immoral not to jump in and try to help while he’s here. Ladybug shouldn’t have to do everything by herself. So he jumps into a fight against an akuma, they win, and then he takes off the ring and holds it out to her, explaining he’s not right for this but he trusts her to find someone who is. He trusts her judgment. But Marinette… well, she just had a fight where someone took the threat seriously, didn’t clown around and had her back for once. She sees someone who views having a miraculous as an incredibly serious thing. After having dealt with Chat’s nonsense, that’s wonderful.
Ladybug tells Célestin to keep the cat miraculous for the time being. She’ll look for another candidate to give it to long-term. For now, though, she trusts him to do the job correctly, since he takes it seriously. The bigger issue she has is Alya speculating on the Ladyblog that Ladybug and Chat Noir broke up or that Ladybug is cheating on Chat Noir with the new black cat. Exhausted with Alya insisting the two are dating and not listening to anything Ladybug has ever said about not being interested in him, Ladybug stops giving her interviews and instead, with Célestin’s help, sets up her own social media accounts and personal site in order to be able to speak to people directly. She talks about how Chat has harassed her, touched her without her consent, repeatedly ignored her boundaries and made her life harder. Paris’ opinion of him turns sour at the same rate as Adrien at school gets snappier and shorter tempered with the people around him. Marinette’s crush on Adrien fades as she sees him defending Chat Noir, arguing with other people and generally being less and less mature in ways that are distinctly repulsive instead of charming. Lila decides to go for a different model she’s charmed online who isn’t defending sexual harassment, Chloe is too busy trying to figure out what’s going on with Adrien to bother Marinette, everything is looking up.
Then Adrien gets akumatized. It’s a combination of having his hero persona disliked by everyone, seeing Ladybug be happy with someone else, and the fact that she said she wasn’t romantically interested in him. He manages to suck at being an akuma because the person he goes after, immediately, is the new Chat, Chat Minuit. He thinks this man somehow stole his girlfriend despite all evidence to the contrary, and yells out that he was Chat Noir and Ladybug is his. Ladybug has never been more disappointed or repulsed in her life. Unfortunately for him, Alya livestreamed most of the fight. Now people know he was the douchebag Ladybug had been complaining about, and they’re mad, so Gabriel, if only because he likes money and this is bad for his company’s reputation and profits, shuffles Adrien off to a private boarding school away from angry, dangerous people who hate him enough to want to hurt him. (Yes, Adrien is a minor and shouldn’t be threatened by adults, but sadly, we’ve seen adults IRL threaten minors. It’s wrong but it happens. The fic just shields him from it because no minor, even a shitty one, should be threatened by adults with physical or mental harm.)
Alya apologizes to Ladybug for everything and vows to make amends. Marinette excels at pursuing her fashion career without having to worry about carrying around Chat Noir’s deadweight and instead has someone to lean on when it comes to superheroics. Célestin ends up being the permanent new holder of the cat miraculous and finally overcoming his ongoing fears of not being a good enough person. Now the fight against Hawkmoth can go on but with two competent superheros, not just one.
In my mind I picture Célestin as black, but honestly I’d be cool with a prompt filler making him another race so long as he wasn’t white. This show has way too many white characters when you look at France’s actual demographics already. Please keep him a nonwhite biromantic ace who isn’t automatically attracted to Marinette and she isn’t automatically attracted to him because people can in fact just be friends, regardless of what bad writing might tell you. Give me some bi ace rep where being bi doesn’t mean crushing on everyone or cheating and being ace doesn’t mean being cold or standoffish and I will die happy.

The Shifting Mound and Tumblr
(In which it soon becomes abundantly clear that I prefer the former.)
It's seemed to me that the overwhelming majority of people on Tumblr are generally far more opposed to Slay the Princess's Narrator than the average consensus (which admittedly has very few Narrator defenders). Not necessarily with the idea that there are few Narrator likers. No, that's to be expected. What's interesting is the sheer amount of disgust that the Narrator receives, almost on a nonsensical level. That's intrigued me, especially with Tumblr's, shall we say, unique reputation both in terms of bias towards certain positions as well as the generally intriguing style of media analysis.
The theory that I think sticks best is that the Princess is exactly the kind of character that the most active folks on Tumblr would love, to be frank. She's a god stripped from her godhood, a Lovecraftian entity for all of the horror fans who like religious theming, something directly associated with this platform. She is a genuine "girlboss" (as opposed to the plastic, artificial "girlboss" plaguing our corporate slop), something that this site, both overwhelmingly disgusted with modern media's analysis of women and the only one to openly tolerate blatant misandry, is absolutely dying for. She is a Princess, in a romance of magnificent proportions, one toxic and healthy and horrific and beautiful all at once, one with an innumerable amount of the platform's endless shippers begging for a bit of anything to turn into homosexual romance.
She is something of an ideal character, both in the narrative and in the meta narrative, an individual that can and will be perceived in many different ways, to wear so many hats that the local haberdasher goes out of stock. She has all these positive traits, and infinitely more can be tacked on at the creator's intention. In a way, the Shifting Mound herself begins to deconstruct, every bit of her, even the genuinely nasty parts like Tower or Nightmare, being flanderized into this nothingness, this being that is whatever you want it to be, well, that leads to a lot of opportunities for fan creation, for genuinely talented fanart with an audience for quite literally everyone.
So of course, when something threatens the Shifting Mound, then things begin to get spicy. The Narrator, who fully threatens both the Princess and her endlessly farmable romance with the Long Quiet, already plays something of an antagonistic role. But you attack the cash cow (the golden calf, if you will) of the fandom, one that so many people have a far greater investment in because she embodies those values that creators here so value, then obviously the antagonist must become a villain, no? So with that, the Narrator becomes a pariah, not only being the prideful, unlikable jerk he is as is, but as a threat to the Princess, a threat to the truly *over*loved character in this slice of the fanbase. And while the former would almost certainly be allowable (I can see the "skrunkly" art already, Madre de Dios), the latter is unconscionable.
As I'm sure you can see, I just wanted to dunk on Tumblr while also talking about my favorite game of all time. It's all in good fun, though. Despite everything, you fellas are still the number one site I go to for any fandom, because for all of the irritation that you cause within my fragile body, you make quality. And I do not take that for granted, you magnificent ladies, gentleman, and the remaining 80% of you.

After Day of reckoning a lot of people have been downing Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. A lot of it was just people poking fun at them but I saw this one post from a boxing site that felt deeper and resonated with sentiments I've had about those two. It goes as follows.
"The truth is that as both of their defining fights came against each other (barring Fury/Klitschko), their reputations are inextricably linked and dependent on one another. After Wilder was so thoroughly dominated by Parker, and Fury struggled badly (and arguably lost) to Ngannou, the thinness of their resumes casts a shadow over their legacies.
All of a sudden, Fury being dropped by Cunningham starts to look bad again. Fury's life and death struggle with Wallin starts to look bad (after Joshua thrashed him) . His choice of Schwarz and an unknown Wallin post-Wilder 1 looks like a lack of confidence. His arrogance of choosing Whyte and an ancient Chisora for fights NOBODY wanted post Wilder 3 looks like what it was - greed. And the Ngannou option too - going for high reward/low risk. It's not a good look. I thought Fury was a nailed on ATG, and his bravery for facing Wilder when he did and doing what he did was the stuff of legends. But again, that is the only redeeming factor in his post-Klitschko resume - and now that looks...severely diminished.
Likewise Wilder. His WBC reign was absurdly stage-managed by the WBC and PBC. And Fury was a cherry pick gone wrong. Clever management, but after his thrashing by Parker it starts to really look like smoke and mirrors. And again, I loved Wilder as a fighter. I wanted to see him face the best and genuinely thought he would find a way to win despite his limitations. But we NEVER got those fights. And so now we start to wonder why...and it does seem like he was manufactured. Had he fought Ruiz and beaten him, had he fought and beat Whyte even, or Joyce - or even Martin we wouldn't be saying this as we would have a much better yardstick of his true level. But he managed to be a champ and not fight these fights."
what do you think about this post and what do you think about how these past few months have affected the way people see Wilder and Tyson?
The post is right mostly, though I think it undersells Parker a tad. though I disagree that a win over Charles Martin would have been some huge deterrent for criticism considering Wilder KOed the guy (Helenius) who KOed the guy (Kownacki) who beat Martin.
I think people attributed a lot to Wilder that just was not shown in the ring. For as bad as the Parker fight was for him, it was not a split from the norm. When he has fought skilled heavyweights in the past, he has been down or even on the cards late (See the Ortiz fights). I think the wars with Fury might have blinded people from the fact his resume is really light because that used to be a really common critique up til he fought Fury.
I think Fury has fucked his legacy up more. Almost losing to a guy in his first ever boxing match as the lineal heavyweight champion is bad. Like really bad. Especially when he was openly ducking the unification fight everyone wants to see.
But also, the fact of the matter is heavyweight is bad. Yeah, we could and should have got AJ vs Tyson Fury/Deontay Wilder at some point in the last like 6-7 years, but otherwise it's not like there was much out there. Like Whyte is not a deeply skilled or interesting fighter (and we'd all have preferred for the Usyk fight), but he was honestly the most "interesting" fight available for Fury in 2022. Usyk and AJ were tied up with one another (+ Usyk was serving in the war). Parker had semi-recently lost to Whyte. Hrgovic had yet to beat Zhang, Zhang had yet to beat Joyce, and Joyce's most notable win was either Daniel Dubois or Carlos Takam. The third Chisora fight was blatant cherry-picking, but honestly Whyte was the best available heavyweight come April 2022. The only other one I can think of that "could" have got the fight was Andy Ruiz but people were still laughing at him for coming into the rematch with AJ overweight and underprepared. And when he did pop up, he barely edged out a 43+ year old Luis Ortiz despite knocking him down like 3x. The division is just bad.

What happened to the people in Tanjiro’s hometown after he and Nezuko left? Like their reactions to the two’s sudden disappearance and finding out that their coal supply can no longer come from them.
Oh no!!!! No charcoal!? Charcoal is life!! At least until it's slowly replaced by electricity, which Tanjiro seemed to know in the post-canon epilogue extras was a looming fate. Given all the power lines in the town when 13-year-old Tanjiro goes selling charcoal, I assume it's already making progress toward that.
As for the emotional side of it, I've responded to a similar concern before in this Ask, so here is the copy/pasted of the relevant portion of that below!
Honestly, I was surprised by the village’s upkeep of their home, including nice new tatami and shelves which Nezuko noticed in the extended epilogue included the Volume 23 version of Chapter 204. I would had assumed they’d have a mess of a home to come back to (and wrote my canon divergent/continuation fic that way, for the first draft was written after Chapter 204’s magazine publication but before Volume 23’s publication). At least nowadays in Japan, uninhabited homes are often left as-is and fall to shambles, even in cities, causing problems for the neighbors as they become home to pests. Upkeep is an issue, and it seems unlikely the townspeople would had gone out of their way to keep the site of a tragedy so nice.
However, Gotouge seems to stress that the Kamado family, simply for being good people, were often humbled by being on the receiving end of such kindnesses. Even Sumiyoshi and Suyako were on the receiving end of this, as mentioned in a Taisho Secret in Volume 22, for having helped a local lord’s wife and son while they were in peril without knowing who they were. Even though they tried to refuse reward, they made sure they had a nicely fixed up house anyway (side note, they moved in to Yoriichi’s and Uta’s abandoned house).
A sturdy house as returns for their kindness seems to be as much of a running theme in Kamado history as is Hinokami Kagura and making charcoal. We do see that Tanjiro is pretty popular among the townspeople and everyone knows they can rely on him, and if Tanjiro’s highly biased word is to be trusted, Nezuko had a reputation as a local beauty. In good whether the little kids must had gone into town a bunch, and Tanjiro (and Inosuke’s) continued charcoal business (despite the increasing reliance on electricity) in the Fanbook #2 extended epilogue shows that the Kamado family has always had a reputation for high quality charcoal. Certainly, they’ve been well-loved long enough that their tragedy would not go unnoticed.
As further evidence of this, in the Giyuu Gaiden, a hunter even notices that on a different mountain nearby there was a family of charcoal farmers slaughtered and a suspicious person in a half-and-half haori was seen around there. Clearly, the villagers were quick to notice the incident and start looking around for the man who might had done it!
But we’re still left with the question of how quickly they’d have noticed the absence, how word got around, and just how much they knew. My initial thought in response to your Ask was “there’s no way Tanjiro had time for that, he had bury his family and get Nezuko dressed and hurry and go!” but then again, this is Tanjiro we’re talking about. Tanjiro who faithfully keeps a diary for Nezuko no matter how tired he is, and who faithfully keeps in touch with all his penpals even with all his demon slaying work to keep him busy. If anyone would had written a letter, it would had been him.
It’s possible that his reasoning would had been for Nezuko’s sake. Should word get around about the incident, and about Nezuko being a demon, people might suspect she was the one who did it. Even Tanjiro had to consider that possibility when he was first shocked by her transformation, though he had the evidence to clearly determine that she was innocent. So maybe if he did leave something, it might simply had been to inform people that Nezuko still needs help, and he’s left to take care of her.
To the townspeople, Tanjiro’s word is trustworthy. As soon as someone discovered the incident (and perhaps a letter), word would probably get around pretty fast, and if Tanjiro had circumstances that forced him to leave for Nezuko’s sake, that implies that they might make a return once she was alright. That might be what inspired the townspeople, who cared for generations about their local charcoal farmers, to have their hearts wrenched with sympathy for the tragedy these two surviving children have been through, and to try to do what they can by taking care of the house while they’re gone.
As for knowing if it was demons or not, it’s possible only Saburo knew that. There’s so much we don’t know about Saburo, but my personal headcanon is that he lost his family to demons and was rescued by the Demon Slayers. While others might have been quick to blame the suspicious man in the half-and-half haori, anything said by Saburo, a man perhaps known for keeping to himself with a sullen personality, was dismissed or taken for mere superstition. Saburo, having told Tanjiro to stay with him that night, might had already felt something was off, and when the feeling kept bothering him, he might had gone to check on the Kamado family and been the first one to discover the massacre. Letter or not, he’d have known Tanjiro survived, and might had gotten there soon enough to trace the footprints to deduce to that one of the other older children must had survived too.
---- New additional thought: As for how well they emotionally adjusted to this knowledge, it may depend on how familiar they are or not with demons' existence. Also, just a shameless plug, I really enjoyed writing young!Tanjuro's interactions with the village in this One-Shot, in which Tanjuro survives an encounter with Muzan.

'An expansive book that is meticulously detailed about Oppenheimer’s entire life and more, American Prometheus can intimidate any filmmaker into biting more than they can chew. The first watch was drenched in excitement and anxiety about discovering what Nolan does to the book in his screenplay. I recognized that two individuals are bound to perceive a text in two different ways. Therefore, if Oppenheimer’s screenplay fell short of my expectations, it was primarily because I wanted to see the entire book unfold before me or the parts of it I deemed more important than others.
This is a concern that now exists for any film derived from a text that we have read. However, I could watch Oppenheimer the second time without the baggage of its source material. And subsequently, I am bound to conclude that this is Nolan’s finest screenplay. It achieves much more than one might feel because Oppenheimer is about our world.
One-half of the screenplay from Oppenheimer’s perspective is colored by his subjectivity. The choice to have a first-person script builds the subjective bias into the narrative, but this subjective bias is not of the filmmaker but of the subject himself. As a result, the subject’s passivity, pretense, and performity get exposed to the audience. Think of the sequence in which the statesmen and leaders choose from a list of 12 cities the sites to detonate the first couple of bombs. Oppenheimer has denied lobbying against the use of the bomb and is conforming to the military leaders who have allowed him the opportunity to secure a formidable reputation.
Oppenheimer goes silent on his own accord as Groves interrupts him from mentioning the concern of the scientists, and the sequence ends. The abrupt cut doesn’t allow the audience to seethe at the early genocidal tendencies of the militarists, including Oppenheimer, because, for Oppenheimer, the conversation has ended. In another sequence, he convinces Rabi to join the team after the latter’s refusal to be a part of a programme that reduces “three centuries of physics into a weapon of mass destruction,” and Rabi’s discomfort gets shadowed completely by Oppenheimer’s words, which he views to be a closing note. The film is replete with such sequences, which contribute to revealing Oppenheimer’s self-importance and how he rationalized his role in each circumstance.
What I have mentioned above doesn’t sound extraordinarily important per se. It becomes meaningful only because we have the other half of the screenplay, a partially objective one that sees beyond Oppenheimer’s line of sight. This other half prevents the colored half from amounting to the subject’s glorification. This part of the screenplay is about the impact of Oppenheimer’s actions, words, and a display of his political myopia. It is to establish that Oppenheimer got blinded by his sense of self-brilliance to the point that he never stood for something other than feeding his self-repute. In addition to the black-and-white sequences, all the film’s characters confront Oppenheimer in various circumstances. These sequences compel us to agree with all the people who occupy the antagonistic spaces in the narrative and those who are by the subject’s side.
We hate Strauss’ conservatism and abuse of power, but we agree with him when he says Oppenheimer would do everything all over again if given the choice because he serves himself. He has never apologized for the bombings despite the guilt complex. We hate Truman for having bombed Japan, but we agree with him grounding Oppenheimer by telling him that Hiroshima is not about him. We hate Teller for being envious of Oppenheimer and lobbying for a genocidal H-bomb. Still, we agree when he asks Oppenheimer what he believes in or when he destroys Oppenheimer’s idea that a nuclear bomb will end all wars. And we agree with Kitty when she chides him for thinking the world will feel sorry for him when he experiences the consequences of his sins. The dialogue is prophetic in nature. Oppenheimer is seen betraying everything he says he stands for or is.
At the same time, none of the sequences disprove or disagree with Oppenheimer. Roger Robb rightly grills the subject for having many moral scruples in 1949 despite not having any in 1945 when the bombs were used. And Oppenheimer rightly points out that it’s because he now knew his country would use any weapon it had. It’s a single line summarising America’s military-industrial complex and invalidating all its claims of ending the war and ensuring global peace.
In real life, Oppenheimer never recognized his guilt. But his actions betrayed what he thought. Serious geopolitical concerns further inflated the guilt complex. All of them are valid. In the end, we come out knowing that Oppenheimer’s role in making the bomb was inevitable, his refusal to prevent its use was his crime in conformity, and the assassination of his credibility was a counter-crime against him, reflecting America’s rabid anti-communist temperament. The subject is a perpetrator and a victim, both. And his conformity is foundational to both the roles he occupies.
Kitty’s objection to it also exposes conformity. And after its exposition, it is criticized within the film with the argument that he is trying to martyr himself with silence. The film is about exposing Oppenheimer’s shortcomings, criticizing them, and through his victimization, revealing the violence America has made systematic. We must understand that the subject was a victim of political violence, which has been integral to the mechanisms of his nation-state.
But even the recognition of his victimhood is not without his criticism. When Albert Einstein tells Oppenheimer that when the state rehabilitates him, it will be a self-serving act of their rehabilitation to whitewash power abuse that once happened (and perpetually happens) in Washington, he does so by reminding him of what the community did to Einstein when they honored him as the greatest physicist since Newton.
All being said, the film’s greatest achievement isn’t solely in a screenplay that criticizes its subject in the act of exploration. It is in establishing the omnipresent vulnerability to life in a post-nuclear world. Numerous films have vocally discussed the nuclear holocaust. Numerous films have cautioned against using nuclear weapons and advocated for disarmament. But numerous films have also addressed the misery in the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or have conceptualized possible misery from theory. Oppenheimer doesn’t rely on a graphic presentation to establish, with its conclusion, the vulnerability of everyday life to actions of aggressive states. America has proven again and again that violence is its behavior.
Violence is how it deals with the world. It invades, plunders, and kills states. It destabilises economies. Moreover, it will kill its own to prevent the spread of a specific ideology that challenges its foundational tenet. In the cultural space, it subsumes every other culture via appropriation. At a domestic level, it would allow the massacre of its citizens at the rate of 50 per day if it meant profit-generation from the commercial sale of firearms. In our own country, the state has successfully turned the majority against the minority and secured widespread support for its investment in national and domestic security, legitimizing abuse.
The Indian state has become aggressive on the whole. When America dropped the bombs on Japan, it did so to gain geopolitical advantage. And if its position is challenged, it will do so again. But it’s one action that made it imperative for all nations to sow the seeds of their own destruction so that they aren’t threatened with might.
The non-inclusion of the aftermath of bombings on Japanese cities is not an act of willful ignorance but a choice of integrity. Essentially, it is a reflection of Oppenheimer’s weakness in confronting the demon of his making. Additionally, it is a refusal to use the misery of millions as currency to evoke empathy from the audience when the narrative voice is an outsider himself. We shouldn’t feel the dread of nuclear war because of what it did to people in Japan but because it is fundamentally cruel beyond measure, as a nuclear war kills indiscriminately. The idea of committing genocide cannot be a strategic consideration.
The pain of the Japanese people was not a mistake but a calculated choice by the perpetrators. Oppenheimer shielded himself with his reputation to escape accountability for his naivete. The theory could only take him so far, but he chose not to read the sign of the times so that he could remain close to his masters. Oppenheimer is a story of failure, not triumph. The man failed to choose, commit, act, fight, and change, all the while thinking he could do everything. Today, the two scorpions in the bottle of the world possess 90% of all nuclear warheads.
Paul Schrader called Oppenheimer (2023) the most important film of the century, and we may have our reservations against his opinion. But notwithstanding the quality of the movie vis-a-vis the cinema of the 21st century, Oppenheimer (2023) exists as a piercing critique of a creator’s self-serving guilt without accountability, infusion and legitimization of violence in the system, and the USA’s military-industrial complex. This makes it, perhaps, the most important film of the century since There Will Be Blood (2007) until Martin Scorsese comes with Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).'

Ran a oneshot yesterday set in the Cyberpunk universe by Mike Pondsmith, using The Sprawl PBTA role-playing system instead of the actual Cyberpunk system because The Sprawl is much more accessible and has specific in-system scaffolding for elaborate heists. Dramatis personae:
Rachel - Prophet Nine, she/her, Pusher, a former Scientologist who upon reaching a certain auditing level remembered a past life in which she was a Child of Xenu, who is actually a benevolent figure unlike what is preached in Scientology.  Founded the cult, Children of Xenu, and has a small but loyal following
Nox - James, he/him, Driver, a no-nonsense professional who has a big fucking car which he's very good at driving
Em - Transistor, she/her, Tech, a wunderkind jack-of-all-trades with a diplomat's soul and multidisciplinary expertise
Ashley - Deadeye Sarah, she/her, Killer, has a big fucking gun and enjoys using it
Trevor - Big Scoop, he/him, Reporter, late arrival to the party, is trying to break a big story and spent the first 2 hours of the session tied up in a basement (Trevor arrived an hour in and I hooked his character in at a narratively appropriate time)
The setup: it's 2075, everyone but Big Scoop has been an edgerunner in Night City for a number of years already.  They were on a job together recently that went south in a big way.  Their planner, Jimmy, who tended to lead from the front, missed a crucial detail, the job went sideways, and he took a high-velocity round in the face trying to fix it.  The end result was disastrous and public enough that Prophet Nine, James, Transistor, and Deadeye Sarah were pretty much out of the game, their reputations in tatters despite their overall competence.
The session opens with them getting a call from Rogue Amendiares, Night City's #1 Fixer.  She brings them to her club, the Afterlife, and explains that she has a job specifically for them.  Arasaka, the biggest megacorporation in the world, was running a convoy through the badlands outside Night City.  It got hit by the Aldecaldos, a nomad tribe, and the cargo taken. The hit was quick, clean, and surgical, clearly an inside job.  But the Aledecaldos, while taking the cargo - a big, nondescript, sealed crate - to the drop point inside Night City, got hit by an opportunistic group of Tyger Claw gangsters in Japantown who took the truck with the crate in it.  Now Rogue's client wants the crate taken from the Tyger Claws quickly and with a minimum of public fuss.  Rogue calls the PCs in because she knows they're competent, but no one will be watching them because their reps are in tatters, and she knows they'll take the job, because the client is paying a lot and she's their only way back into the game.
The crew accepts the job and Rogue gives them their initial payment and the drop site once they have the package, an abandoned warehouse in Watsontown.  The crew begins the Legwork Phase - determining where the crate ended up getting taken, by whom, and how they're going to extract it.  Transistor hacks the security cameras of a net cafe on the street corner of the intersection where the Tyger Claws hit the truck with the crate, finds footage of the truck being taken, and starts the process of figuring out where it went.
Prophet Nine calls on some of her Children of Xenu followers to help.  One of them, Charlie X, runs a chopshop where the truck actually ended up being taken.  He gives her the truck's info and his own security footage of the four Tyger Claws that brought it.
James goes to Wakako Oda, the Fixer for Japantown and de facto leader of the Tyger Claws, and after a little tense negotiation, gets out of her that there are rogue elements within the Tygers who saw an opportunity to take the truck and make some money on their own.  She gives him some names, two of whom she has already "interviewed," as well as a two-block area with eight buildings in it that she suspects the rogue Claws are using for their own operations.
With this additional info, Transistor successfully tracks the truck to one of the eight buildings in the given area.  Using this info, Deadeye Sarah poses as a pizza delivery person to the building. She is unconvincing, but fortunately she has an armored coat and dermal plating that makes her basically immune to small arms fire, which is all the Claws are packing.  A shootout ensues in which she kills eight Claws by herself. She finds a foolishly-placed incriminating billboard of the area with notes on which buildings are used as fronts for which operations, takes a picture of it, and gets out.  The team successfully determines that the only place with enough storage is the building in the center of the area, a nightclub-slash-drug-den that has extensive basement storage the Claws use for storing drugs, guns, and other stolen goods.
Prophet Nine visits The Dragon, the ripperdoc in Japantown who is known to supply the Tyger Claws with their cybernetic augmentations.  Using some truly excellent fast talk and flattery, as well as a hefty bribe, she convinces him to break doctor-patient confidentiality and give her the access codes to the Claws' cybernetics.  Transistor then uses these codes to hack the cybereyes of the nightclub staff, getting a perfect map of the building as well as intel on how many Claws are in the building, the precise location of the box, and the fact that there is a reporter tied up in the basement.
The team decides to move to the Action Phase.  They decide their best approach is to show up at the club near closing time and sell the Claws a line about how they have been sold out.  They talk their way past the bouncer and meet with the leader of the rogue Claws faction, Kintaro.  James displays some excellent hardball negotiation skills when he tells Kintaro that they know what's in the basement, and if he knows, so does Arasaka.  He reminds Kintaro about the fact that Adam Smasher, one of the most terrifying men in the world, works for Arasaka, and offers $50k to make the problem go away.
Kintaro is successfully scared shitless, but his younger gang members, who don't know Smasher's reputation, are unconvinced.  An argument over their private links ensues.  Transistor gets the crew access to their private comms using the codes Prophet Nine got from The Dragon, as well as sneakily disabling all their combat cyberware like their mantis blades.  In the basement, Big Scoop realizes no one has come for the usual 15-minute patrol, breaks out of his bonds, grabs an LMG, and starts heading upstairs.
The argument among the Claws is getting heated.  Deadeye Sarah, who is getting frustrated with Kintaro's inability to command his people, starts threatening one of the more uppity members of the gang.  Things boil over and a massive shootout ensues, with Deadeye Sarah losing a (cyber)leg in the firefight.  However, Transistor comes in with a clutch move, turning off all of the Claws' eyes and rendering them blind.  The crew kills all of them but Kintaro, who they leave lying in a pool of his own shame as they go to retrieve the crate.  Big Scoop gets upstairs, sees what's going on, and drops his LMG so they won't shoot him.  They recognize that he's not part of the Claws and agree to help get him out, too.
The crew loads the crate onto a dolley they've brought, since it is large and weighs 250kg.  At this point I have Nox roll 2d6 plus his car's Power to see if the crate fits in the trunk.  A 5 says it does not, so we got an amusing scene of them trying and failing to close the trunk, then just bungie-cording it as closed as possible. Transistor takes one of the seats out of the back of the car to try to use as makeshift cushioning-slash-armor for the crate, which ultimately proves unsuccessful.  Big Scoop logs on to Future Twitter to ask his followers if there's anything trending about Japantown, at which point he sees a video taken from an apartment window of thirty-odd Tyger Claws on motorcycles heading in their direction.  James puts the pedal to the metal, following a route suggested by Big Scoop, and manages to lose most of them.
However, the six most badass bikers manage to stay on their tail, and a thrilling car chase slash gunfight ensues.  The crew and the bikers trade fire, with Deadeye Sarah killing most of them but Prophet Nine also getting a few hits in.  Transistor spends most of the car chase trying to hold onto Big Scoop's ankles, as he tries to hold onto the crate, which is starting to come loose from the trunk.  At the conclusion of the chase, James kills the final biker by putting on his e-brake and forcing him into a rear-end collision; the crate goes flying out of the trunk and crashes face-first into the asphalt.  There is now a large crack in the crate.
While the edgerunners argue over what to do, Big Scoop looks inside with his enhanced cybereyes and sees a sleeping Japanese man, one that looks suspiciously like a much younger Saburo Arasaka, CEO of Arasaka Corporation and the most powerful man in the world.  He shares this information with the crew, who are concerned, but ultimately stick to their current course of action, which is to re-load the crate into the trunk and flee to Charlie X's chop shop, where the car will get repainted.
They go to repair the crate, but find that the crack broke a hermetic seal and that the man inside is waking up.  Reluctantly, the crew agrees that they should open it, because if nothing else, a human will be easier to transport than a huge, heavy crate.  Freed from the crate, the man inside tells them an incredible story: he *is* Saburo Arasaka - or, rather, a clone of Saburo Arasaka, one with all of his "real" counterpart's memories because of a program he calls "Soulkiller," an incredibly sophisticated piece of software written by the late Alt Cunningham which can scan and translate a human being's brainwaves into a digital personality engram.  Because he knows everything the "real" Saburo knows, he also knows that he was created for the eventual purpose of Saburo downloading himself into this new, young, cloned body, the personality merge being expedited by the shared brainwaves.
Clone!Saburo says that he suspects Old!Saburo is not aware of the Aldecaldo theft of the crate, and that an Arasaka executive associated with the program is trying to conceal their failure from the higher-ups by getting Clone!Saburo back on the sly - hence why Rogue has been hired as an intermediary and why Arasaka simply didn't take the crate back with their own security forces.  He offers the crew his word as a samurai that if they can get him to Arasaka Tower in Corpo Plaza, he will begin the process of seizing control of "his" company from Old!Saburo and will make sure the crew isn't cleaned up as loose ends, which is what he suspects will happen to them if they stick to the job as outlined and deliver him to their client in Watsontown. The crew agrees with his assessment and decides to take him on his word - Prophet Nine specifically soliciting his help taking on Scientology if he succeeds, which Clone!Saburo is happy to agree to because fuck Scientology.
The only way by car to Arasaka Tower is a road through Memorial Park in Corpo Plaza.  Knowing that their client is aware that they are being double-crossed, since the crew is now headed in the wrong direction, James guns it hard and makes it all the way to Memorial Park before their unknown client's forces manage to intercept them.  Three incredibly dangerous, full-borg Arasaka ninjas attack the car as it enters Memorial Park, one landing on the hood and cutting the engine block in half with a monomolecular katana.  Big Scoop starts live streaming, specifically using a move from his playbook called "Live and On the Air."  Trevor rolls and hits an 8, which means he needs to pick a downside to the story going live.  He picks the option that reads, "Your rushed narrative is misinterpreted by the public with unintended narrative consequences."
The fight between the crew and the ninjas is furious, but brief.  Transistor kills the one on the trunk by hotwiring the car's lithium battery to explode; the crew jump out of the car and avoid the inferno.  Prophet Nine tries to shoot one of the two remaining ninjas, but fails and gets a near-fatal bullet in her chest for her trouble, which knocks her unconscious.  Deadeye Sarah takes off that ninja's head with a monomolecular whip, while James body-checks the last one into the flaming ruin of his car. The last threat defeated, the crew and Clone!Saburo make it to the steps of Arasaka Tower, with Transistor carrying the injured and bleeding Prophet Nine on her shoulders.
Big Scoop's live-streaming worked: the fight with the ninjas in the park has gone viral, with more than a billion views, and thousands of people in Night City have gathered at the base of Arasaka Tower - including all of Prophet Nine's Children of Xenu. Prophet Nine wakes up, rises, bloody, from Transistor's shoulders, and hails her followers, who begin chanting, "PRAISE XENU!"  The entire crowd goes feral and begins chanting it too.  The unintended narrative consequences have arrived.
We have our epilogue: Clone!Saburo is good as his word, getting the crew's names off of Arasaka hit-lists when he seizes power.  All the characters receive a fat payout, enough to let them retire.  James gets a new car.  He and Deadeye Sarah both continue edgerunning, since they're not the retiring kind.  Transistor, as the unsung hero of the crew, becomes famous within tech circles and finds a community of like-minded people in which she is a minor celebrity.  Big Scoop, as the reporter at ground zero of the Clone!Saburo story, becomes a properly Famous Journalist, a la Hunter S. Thompson.
Prophet Nine's Children of Xenu cult explodes to become the second most popular religion in the world, after Judaism.  Scientology is toppled, following the unexplained deaths of many of its top members, including Tom Cruise.  The Children of Xenu's only real religious precepts are "cyberware is good because if you have less meat there is less of you for Thetans to attach to" and "don't be a dick," so on the whole the religion does more good than harm, though cyberpsychosis cases do rise sharply because of its focus on cyborgization.

Rentalzi Review – Fake Reputation Can’t Hide The Truth Forever
Prime conditions present at rentalzi.com should be reliable and advanced enough to elevate your trading experience and help you build most lucrative strategies. At least that’s what the website owners would like you to believe.
In truth, this brokerage company is yet another shady conduct claiming to operate under full regulatory supervision. Despite not owning any legit Forex licenses, the site in question doesn’t shy away from claiming to be one of the most well regulated international brokerage conglomerates.
Regulated Nowhere
The first clue we based the beginning of our investigation was the website’s claim about the company being based in Hong Kong. SFC, being the financial authority in charge of regulating trading platforms in that jurisdiction, doesn’t have any information about this firm.
What’s more, prominent regulators like FCA, CySEC, BaFin, ASIC and other Tier 1 supervisors also possess no data about this business. The only registry where this firm shows up is the SVGFSA register. However, the website itself doesn’t say anything about HQ being in SVG, so it remains a mystery about their true location.
It is known, though, that offshore service providers like Rich FX care not for your fund safety, negative balance protection or compensation plans.
Falsified High Ratings
The involvement of review seller networks is evident in this case. If you take a look at Sitejabber, Trustedreviews, and TrustProfile, for example, all of the ratings – 100% of them, are the highest grades.
If these reviews were truthful, flawless ratings would not be present in that percentage. Also, how come their TrustPilot page is empty if they’re so famous and reliable?!
Urges You To Deposit
The determined boiler room agents who get their foul hands on your contact number can flood you with phone calls to either drive you crazy or force you to invest.
In the beginning the deal may sound like a profit chance you wouldn’t want to miss. Pushy fraudsters urge you to deposit cash into their scheme so you wouldn’t miss the last shot at getting rich until their fake offer expires.
It goes without saying that such offers are completely fake as well as the artificial hype surrounding them. You’ll be left empty handed and without proper legal support, chances to get your investment back are slim.

D. Warner Electric: A Testament to Passion, Precision, and Perseverance
By: Dean Warner
D. Warner Electric isn't just a business; it's a story of hard work and family bonds. Since starting in 2001, this family-run company has grown from a small group to a thriving team of five, working on all kinds of projects. Dean Sr. started from the bottom and worked his way up to become a master electrician, setting the foundation for the company's success. Despite facing challenges, like competing with bigger companies, his focus on customers and training his team has kept them going strong. Through their work, they've earned a reputation for doing great quality work and caring about the details. With Dean Jr. exploring his dad's world, they're aiming to show just what goes into electrical contracting, making it easier to understand for everyone. Dean's Electrical Contracting Company isn't just about business; it's a legacy built on passion, teamwork, and making customers happy.
Tumblr media
The mist-laden morning depicted in the initial frame of our visual narrative sets the stage for the day's endeavors. As the D. Warner Electric van navigates the winding roads toward job sites, it symbolizes more than mere transportation; it embodies the spirit of diligence and determination that propels the team forward. This journey is not just about completing tasks; it's about forging connections, both electrical and human, that illuminate communities and foster growth.

Throughout the photo series, we catch glimpses of the meticulous work that defines D. Warner Electric. Dean Warner himself takes center stage, showcasing his expertise as he installs electrical boxes and carefully routes wires. Each movement is deliberate, reflecting years of experience and a true passion for the craft. For Dean, this isn't just a job—it's a calling.

Inside the electrical main panel, Dean's careful planning comes into play. With a measuring tape in hand, he ensures that every aspect of the power distribution is safe and efficient. This attention to detail extends to every facet of the company's operations, from organizing tools in the work van to planning and executing each job with precision.

But D. Warner Electric is more than just one person—it's a team effort. From the collaborative planning sessions reflected on the workshop whiteboard to the shared challenges of installing a large fan, teamwork is at the core of everything they do. It's this spirit of camaraderie that sets them apart.

At the heart of D. Warner Electric's mission is a commitment to innovation. As Dean oversees the installation of panels high above the ground, he exemplifies the company's dedication to staying ahead of the curve. Whether it's installing automatic transfer switches or meter panels, each component is chosen and installed with care to ensure reliable power and accurate energy monitoring.

Outside a pool house, the team's craftsmanship is on full display. The neatly arranged PVC pipes and precisely spaced components are a testament to their skill and attention to detail. It's not just about getting the job done—it's about creating something that's both functional and beautiful.

In this image, the back of Dean's work van is prominently featured, revealing a glimpse into the essential tools and materials required to complete a job. Among the assortment of equipment, Dean is captured in action, cutting a piece of PVC to size with a sawzall. This snapshot illustrates the organized efficiency of Dean's operation, with everything needed for the job neatly stored and readily accessible.

As we reach the end of our visual journey, it's clear that D. Warner Electric is more than just a business—it's a legacy. From Dean Warner Sr.'s humble beginnings to the thriving company it is today, their story is one of hard work, family values, and a commitment to excellence. With every wire they lay and every panel they install, they're lighting the way to a brighter future.

Q & A Interview with CEO of D. Warner Electric
Dean: Good morning Dad. Before we get going, I just have to ask if it's okay if I record it?
Dean Sr: Sure, okay.
Dean: Okay, cool. Can you tell me about the early days of the company and how it all began?
Dean Sr.: Well, it all started back in 2001 when I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own electrical contracting business. At the time, it was just me and a couple of buddies, and we were primarily focused on residential projects. Over the years, we've grown to a team of five employees and have expanded our services to include commercial and industrial projects as well.
Dean: Cool, cool. What inspired you to start an electrical contracting business, and how did you acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to do so?
Dean Sr.: I've always had a passion for electrical work, and I worked for some plumbing companies and carpentry. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the field. I started out as an apprentice and worked my way up to become a master electrician. Along the way, I gained the skills and knowledge needed to start my own business.
Dean: How has the company evolved over the years, and what have been some of the key milestones or turning points?
Dean Sr.: One of the key milestones for us was when we expanded our services to include commercial and industrial projects. This allowed us to reach a wider range of customers and grow the business. Another milestone was when I hired my first employee, which allowed us to take on larger projects and increase our capacity.
Dean: What are some of the unique challenges you've faced as a small family-run business, and how have you overcome them?
Dean Sr.: One of the challenges we've faced is competing with larger companies that have more resources and manpower. To overcome this, we've focused on providing excellent customer service and building strong relationships with our clients. We've also invested in ongoing training for our employees to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide top-notch service. And I think I've gotten pretty good at teaching after you and your brother.
Dean: Oh, I know. Can you share some examples of memorable projects or clients that have stood out to you over the years?
Dean Sr.: One project that stands out to me is when we worked on a large commercial building that had been damaged by a fire. It was a challenging project, but we were able to complete it on time and within budget. Another memorable project was when we worked on a historic home that needed extensive electrical work. It was a unique project that required a lot of attention to detail, but we were able to complete it to the client's liking, although the lady was crazy.
Dean: How do you ensure that your employees are well-trained and equipped to handle the demands of the job?
Dean Sr.: We invest in ongoing training for our employees to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide top-notch service. We also like to ask Hudson Valley if they have any guys that think could handle the field.
Dean: Like Dustin?
Dean Sr.: Exactly.
Dean: What are some of the core values or principles that guide your business, and how do they influence your decision-making?
Dean Sr.: Some of the core values that guide our business include honesty, integrity, and a commitment to excellence. These values influence our decision-making by ensuring that we always prioritize the needs of our clients and provide them with the best possible service.
Dean: How do you stay competitive in the industry, and what strategies do you employ to attract and retain customers?
Dean Sr.: We stay competitive by constantly looking for ways to improve our services and stay ahead of the competition. We also focus on building strong relationships with our clients and providing excellent customer service. I've always learned that as long as the customer is happy, you're in a good spot.
Dean: What advice would you give to someone who is considering starting their own electrical contracting business?
Dean Sr.: My advice would be to focus on providing excellent customer service and to always prioritize customers. It's also important to stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and try not to take on too big of jobs.
Dean: Okay, last question for ya. Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the future of the company?
Dean Sr.: We plan to continue growing the business and expanding our services. We also want to continue providing top-notch service to our customers and maintaining our reputation as a reliable and trustworthy electrical contracting company and to have you someday take this business over.
Dean: Alright, dad, that's all I got for ya. I'm gonna stop the recording.
Dean Sr.: Alrighty, bud.
My Journey with D. Warner Electric
From the quiet woods of upstate New York emerges a tale of discovery and growth, woven within the fabric of a small yet bustling electrical contracting company—D. Warner Electric. Founded by my father, Dean Warner Sr., in 2002, this company has been more than just a family business; it's a legacy that I am proud to be a part of. For the past six years, I've embarked on a journey of learning and development within the cozy confines of my father's business, finding fulfillment and purpose amidst the hum of wires and the buzz of machinery.
My story with D. Warner Electric began at the tender age of 15, driven by a curiosity to explore the world of electrical contracting and a desire to follow in my father's footsteps. Now, at 21, I find myself entrenched in the daily operations of the company, each day presenting new opportunities for growth and learning. A typical day at D. Warner Electric unfolds with the familiarity of a well-rehearsed routine. Rising early at 6:15 in the morning, I make the short journey from our house to the shop, anticipation bubbling within me for the day's tasks ahead. As my father outlines the day's objectives and materials, I eagerly prepare myself for the challenges that lie ahead.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work involves wiring pulls. This task, while physically demanding, is also intellectually stimulating. It requires teamwork and precision as we navigate the complexities of pulling long cables through buried pipes. Overcoming obstacles with tenacity and skill alongside my colleagues is deeply satisfying, and the sense of accomplishment upon completion is palpable—a testament to our collective effort and determination. At midday, we break for a well-deserved lunch, replenishing our energy for the tasks that await us in the afternoon. With renewed vigor, we return to our work, tackling each task with diligence and care. Whether troubleshooting electrical systems or installing fixtures, every job is approached with a sense of purpose and dedication.
Working alongside my father has been instrumental in shaping my character. His guidance and mentorship have taught me the value of hard work, attention to detail, and perseverance, even in challenging circumstances. I've learned not only technical skills but also important life lessons about resilience and adaptability. Despite the satisfaction of working closely with my father, the job also presents its share of challenges. From navigating inclement weather to troubleshooting complex electrical issues, each obstacle is an opportunity for growth and learning. These experiences have tested my patience and problem-solving abilities, strengthening my resolve to succeed in this field.
Reflecting on the day's accomplishments, I'm filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the experiences that D. Warner Electric has afforded me. Each day is not just a job but a stepping stone towards my future aspirations. As I look toward the future, I'm excited to continue my journey with the company, eager to contribute to its growth and success. With the lessons learned and the skills acquired, I'm confident in my ability to make a meaningful impact and carry on the legacy of excellence that defines D. Warner Electric.
Continuing the Legacy: My Journey at D. Warner Electric
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and take over our family business, D. Warner Electric. Six years ago, at the age of 15, I started working alongside my dad during summer breaks. Little did I know that these experiences would shape my future and ignite my passion for our trade.
As I prepare to graduate from college this year, I reflect on the invaluable lessons I've learned from my father and how they've prepared me for the journey ahead. One of the most important teachings was the art of listening to those with experience. I vividly remember a time when I suggested a new method to snake wires through a wall. Excited about my idea, I presented it to my dad, convinced it would revolutionize our process. His response was simple yet impactful: "Trust me, that won't work." Despite my persistence, I proceeded with my approach, only to realize that he was right. We ended up having to cut open the wall, a humbling lesson in respecting experience and wisdom.
Another crucial skill my dad imparted was the art of customer interaction. He taught me the importance of gaining trust, being polite, and understanding that the customer is always right. These interpersonal skills are foundational in our industry, where customer satisfaction is paramount. One memorable instance was when a client was frustrated with a delay in our service. My dad calmly addressed their concerns, assuring them that we would prioritize their needs. His words stuck with me: "Every customer deserves to feel valued and heard. It's not just about fixing their electrical issues; it's about building relationships."
Observing my dad's daily routine also provided valuable insights. I watched him seamlessly balance family life with the demands of running a successful business. This ability to manage both personal and professional aspects of life will undoubtedly be essential as I transition into a leadership role. "Family comes first," my dad always says, "but when you're at work, give it your all. The business is like another member of the family; you have to nurture it."
Currently, I am pursuing a business degree at Endicott College to equip myself with the necessary knowledge and skills for effectively running our company in the future. My education has broadened my perspective on business strategies, finance, and innovation, all of which I plan to integrate into our operations at D. Warner Electric.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the prospects of leading our family business. However, I am also mindful of the challenges that lie ahead. One significant challenge will be maintaining my father's legacy and ensuring his continued happiness and connection to the business while infusing new ideas and technologies. My vision for the future of D. Warner Electric involves embracing innovation and modernizing our services. "Change is inevitable," my dad often reminds me, "but our commitment to quality must remain top-notch."
As I embark on this final summer working alongside my dad before graduation, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, lessons, and opportunities that have prepared me for the next chapter. With determination, a solid foundation of knowledge, and a deep respect for our family legacy, I am excited to carry forward the torch of D. Warner Electric into the future. This journey is not just about continuing a business; it's about honoring a tradition, embracing innovation, and ultimately, making my father proud. "I've seen the passion in your eyes," my dad once told me, "and I have every confidence that you'll take this business to new heights."
By including more examples of my dad's actions and words, I aim to "show, rather than just tell" why I admire him and what I have learned from him. His guidance and wisdom have been instrumental in shaping my character and preparing me for the responsibilities that lie ahead. As I step into the role of leader, I carry with me the lessons learned from a lifetime of watching my father navigate the challenges and triumphs of entrepreneurship.

“the clothing industry is enormous? Worth around 2.5 trillion dollars, it makes up 3% of the entire global economy.”
“terms of being eco-unfriendly, the clothing industry isn’t the best for the planet from water pollution, toxic chemicals, and carbon emissions. There’s also the fact that many companies recruit people to make clothes in other countries, paying them very little for their efforts, in places known universally as “sweatshops.””
Fast fashion accounts for a considerable amount of clothing waste. We wear something once or twice, it goes out of fashion, and we discard it. Careful purchasing is the answer. ~ Elizabeth L. Cline
“Yet despite all of this, we still buy a vast amount of clothes and then throw them away far too quickly. Very few people consider the impact on the planet when purchasing clothes. After all, nobody wants to feel guilty about their desire to look good.
When you purchase a new pair of jeans or a new t-shirt, it’s hard to know where it was made and if the people involved in making the garment were paid appropriately. But, you can make a conscious decision to learn more and change your purchasing habits.”
“This exercise isn’t about throwing away things your heart is attached to. However, it is about learning how to shop from now on. If you find an item you really love, keep it, even if you don’t wear it too often. But, if you find something that you don’t like or don’t feel comfortable in, it needs to go. Also, anything you’re not sure about, it’s okay to give it a second chance!”
“Separating your sentimental items and placing them into protective plastic covers is a good practice. Rather than keeping these in your closet, you should place them in safe storage. You can then get them out when you want them, and they won’t get dusty or damaged.
Another great tip is to be mindful of what you always reach for in your closet. Think about how certain items make you feel and try to pinpoint why. That will give you critical information for the next time you go shopping for clothes and will help you to avoid fad buys that don’t make you feel your best.
Having a closet clearout such as this is the ideal chance to start afresh, but if you find items that need a few tweaks or fixes, put them into one pile and get your sewing kit out. You could also take them to the tailor and have any alterations or fixes done professionally.”
“Many people assume that clothes should always go to a charity or thrift store. You may think they’ll end up in someone else’s hands who can make good use of them after you. But, that’s not always what happens. Many unwanted clothes are shipped over to other countries, often ending up in Africa. Yet, many clothes by this point are badly damaged or unwearable. So, they end up thrown in the trash, a complete waste.”
“For this reason, it’s best to be more mindful of where you send your used clothes as you’re having your clearout. Your options are:
Donate clothes - Items that are wearable and in clean condition. These can easily be used by other people.
Sell or swap clothes - Items worth a good amount of money. These should also be of top quality and on-trend.
Clothes to be repaired - Anything that can be repaired, e.g., a small tear or a loose button, can be fixed and continue to be worn or added to the donation pile.
Recycle clothes - Items that cannot be worn or fixed can go in the recycling bin.
By choosing the next destination for your clothes, you can ensure that they end up in the best place possible. That may mean someone else’s closet, or they can be recycled and turned into something else entirely. It may take an extra five minutes on top of your regular clearout time, but it’s worth knowing that you’re not being wasteful and that someone else benefits from every piece of clothing.”
“Do some research into the charity you want to donate to and ensure it is reputable and connected to something you believe in. Sites such as Charity Navigator will help you to understand more.
If you’re choosing to put your old clothes into clothing bins, don’t simply assume they go to a charity shop. Some are sold for profit. Check the outside of the bin for the organization’s name and do some research online before tossing in your unwanted clothes.”
If you want to be sure where your donated items will go, take them directly to a place in need, such as a homeless shelter or crisis center. ~ Elizabeth L. Cline
“Before donating your items, be sure that you clean them thoroughly and empty the pockets. If you’re donating shoes, tie them together with the laces so they don’t get separated, and be sure to fix any small things, such as a tiny tear or a loose button.
You can choose to sell your clothes instead. If they’re in top condition, you can make extra cash from your items. Sites such as eBay and Poshmark are two common choices these days. However, to make any money, you should check beforehand to see how much other similar items are selling for. Then you can work out whether it’s worthwhile. You should also look to sell items that are in season and on-trend only.”

Buy less. Choose well. Make it last. ~ Vivienne Westwood
“Buying less clothing means that you can choose better pieces and wear them longer, and as a result, you’re supporting sustainable fashion. It might seem like a small contribution, but it will be a significant benefit if we all do it. Elizabeth Cline states that wearing a piece of clothing for nine months longer than you usually would help to reduce its water, waste, and carbon footprint by up to 30%, according to Wrap UK. That’s a massive saving!”
Mindfully buying reduces damage to the planet, supports sustainability, and saves money over the long term. ~ Elizabeth L. Cline
“Many brands are known to be fashion conscious. That means they create pieces that have less impact on the environment, and their production methods do not involve the use of underpaid labor, such as sweatshops. While it can be hard to find these types of brands, you can do more research into the brands that you regularly buy and work out where they sit on the sustainability scale.
An excellent first step is simply buying quality items and not falling into the fashion fad trap. Before buying, be sure to check seams, zips, and soles. You make better purchasing decisions and create a better capsule wardrobe when you’re more careful.”
“Sourcing out sustainable and conscious brands is always a good choice, but you should remember that no brand can ever be completely perfect. The point is that these businesses are looking to do better, and they’re making a proactive effort. These are the types of brands you should spend your money on.
If you’re unsure where to start looking for conscious brands, Elizabeth Cline suggests heading online and doing some research. The Good on You app is a good starting place as this rates brands according to their sustainability and ethics. You can also search online and follow bloggers who talk about sustainable fashion. All of this will arm you with the information you need to make better shopping decisions.”
If your favorite brand appears to be problematic in the sustainability stakes, contact them to talk about your concerns. Highlighting issues is the first step to making positive changes. ~ Elizabeth L. Cline
“It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you need to buy the latest fashion piece or you’ll be left behind in the trend stakes. But, if it doesn’t fit or suit you, what’s the point? You need to feel good in your clothes, and one way to do that is to shop more carefully, with both style and sustainability in mind.”
“The clothing industry is a multi-million dollar train that shows no signs of slowing down. By being more careful with our purchases and buying from businesses that make an effort to be more sustainable and ethical, we can start to turn the tide.
Your closet is no doubt full of things you don’t wear. But don’t feel ashamed of that fact because you’re certainly not the only one. You can choose to continue buying fad items that end up gathering dust, or you can choose to be more conscious about your purchases.”

Air freight is a term used for the transportation of goods by aircraft.
Tumblr media
Air freight is a term used for the transportation of goods by aircraft.  It is a service that is utilized by many different industries, including the aviation industry, to transport goods all around the world. The air freight industry has seen a lot of growth in recent years, due to the rise in global trade and the increase in e-commerce. This guide will explore the air freight industry and provide you with an overview of how it works, its benefits, and its challenges. What is air freight? Air Freight is the term used for goods or products that are transported by air. This can include anything from small packages to large shipments, and it is a vital part of the aviation industry. There are many different types of air freight, and each has its own benefits and challenges. Types of Air Freight There are two main types of air freight: express and general. Express air freight is faster and typically more expensive than general freight. It is often used for time-sensitive shipments, such as medical supplies or parts for urgent repairs. nobody listens to him, nobody ever listens to him when he's wearing this face and he can't help but wonder why. WHY! he's knowledgeable, he's experienced, he's long - lived, he knows what he's talking about and doing, and SO much time could be saved if people would just—!!
but, anyway.
back to the situation at hand! the utterly crashed homegoing of benton antony fielder! that is kind of his fault? maybe? it does seem to be his face that caused this, merely seeing him is sort of what set the creatures off. maybe they had no intent of showing themselves at all before the fact. the doctor's face has come to be associated with DEATH in some circles amongst the stars; a reputation he's sort of inadvertently earned over the centuries due to the . . . decisions he's had to make, and it's something he desperately wants to fix.
Tumblr media
" i - i'm not going to harm you, just— leave the humans be, listen to me, please! " not only are the mosuians ignoring their assumed adversary, but the attendees are very much in fact panicking before the black - haired woman can round them up; someone just tripped and fell into the open grave at hand and on top of the lowered coffin ( let ' s hope the casket was not damaged ) because one of the mosuians exclaimed directly in their face, and things are not looking very good. they call for ' help ' from down there, and the doctor is quick to reassure them that everything is under control and he is going to get them momentarily.
his way of handling things is galaxy ranger - esque, for sure— peace for peace and violence for violence ( if even , really , the doctor really struggles in doling out brutality even when it ' s given to him in spades ) especially after he realized that the poor things were in mourning just like everybody else, why would he want to bring them any harm? to do such a thing would be barbaric and in poor taste. they're simply just out of their biome and being disruptive, which means he must round them up, displace their matter and take it back to their home planet in his TARDIS before letting them free again. that was the plan all along, truly. he never wanted to hurt them . . . thankfully, the very confident and calm human in charge was able to herd everyone into the on - site funeral home, which is quite impressive. she succeeded where he'd very much failed.
. . . well, save for the poor guy who fell into the grave . . . that is his next course of action, after he manages to get the mosuians out of the way! work in progress . . . but it can't exactly be a pleasant experience, in an open grave on top of the coffin of a man you once knew, surrounded by crying foreign creatures.
" why, yes, madam! " his voice is distinctly not west - american ; it goes to reason that maybe mr. fielder had friends across the world, because this man's accent is distinctly british. estuary, to be more specific! even his posher manner of speech can't hide it. " simply a minor case of misplacement! they're merely a little lost, you see. i apologize for the disturbance. i'll be rounding them up and taking them back from whence they came, they mean no harm. very sorry, once again! " he gives a polite bow and a reassuring smile, despite the circumstances and the clear animosity the beings around the open grave seem to hold for him . . . will they go willingly? he already has the tool needed in his hand; the means with which to break down matter and store it until he can disperse it where it belongs. in this case, an alien species back on their home planet. " . . . just . . . letting them grieve, first, is all. "

Over the years,   Green Marches   had become more and more known for their elaborate and homely services-   tended to with care, diligence, and respect. Most notably though had become Elouise herself, for her care of both the dead and their living. She was dedicated to her work, her craft;   no question nor doubt about it. Every ounce of herself-   her time, her energy, her efforts went all-in to exceeding expectations. The dead were cared for exactly how Elouise wanted to be, and their living were treated even better. All of this had crafted the reputation for her business over her years of operation, and she prided herself in as much. It was this very reputation that brought her clientelle like the Mister Benton Fielder they were burying today.
His service had been planned months in advance. Benton Antony Fielder was a well respected man in life, shown as much in his lengthy obituary and his celebratory funeral guests. A long life filled with adventures, mishaps, survival through wars;   love, family, celebrations, and traditions. He was certainly a man that many paid their attention to...
Elouise stands towards the back of the gathering keeping a watchful eye on the funeral, the mourners, the dead.  Every catch of her eye is met with a warm little smile, both parts encouraging as it was assuring, comforting. She's attentive to the itinerary, making sure chairs are set up, put away, moved around to coincide with the schedule planned for the evening.
One unplanned mishap?
Aliens.
Honeyed hues run doe wide as she catches sight of a glimmer that quickly becomes something-   otherworldly. Elouise, just as quickly, realizes she's not the only one that's noticed. Screams have begun to errupt throughout the cemetery, cutting through the priest's droning and the pre-recorded piano playing in the background. At first, Elouise can only stand there stunned, trying to gather not only herself but the situation as it unfolded rapidly in front of her, in front of everybody...   -There's immense concern first for guests with weaker hearts, elderly and children reacting much stronger than the other adults in attendance. There's a man-   not of the Fielder clan, notably   -that Elouise can hear trying to handle the situation. A pang in her chest for how it seems to do less than nothing, despite it's valiance. She sucks in a breath, finding herself doing the exact same thing, only gentler. Warmer.
Hands are touching lightly along shoulders she can find and guide towards the entrance of the Green Marches funeral home, further back from the cemetery. Elouise soothes the guests and their confused screams with as much reassuring   It's alright! Please, come inside!   's as she can get over their panic and rousing. Her eyes are constantly flit back to the stranger-   the strange man as he does the same in his own way.
And then, to the aliens themselves.
Brows furrow as she leads the last guest up through her doors, eyes still anchored towards the extraterrestrials gathered around the lowered casket. Their shuddering, their shuffling, their odd noises...
Were they...   weeping?
Elouise turns to her staff that were helping inside, filling them in as quickly as she could make sense before closing the doors and ushering herself out towards the...   new gathering.
Now, she'd always taken some shine of pride to the fact that she's easy to adapt, quick to roll with whatever came her way. A lot of her mind was trying to make excuses for the strangeness with stories:   a flash mob of mournersm,  a group of ecclectic hobbyists that Benton had once known,  disrespectful party-crashers...   but none of that could simply sweep away the cold, very present fact of what-   whom was gathered around her and her resting client.
❝ Please, ❞   she winds, slowing to a stop beside the strange man-   the stranger in a suit still out among the aliens.   ❝ What is-   ...  Is everything okay? ❞

((Aside from the essential rule and about page, I will read further along the blog posts. I take that time to see more of how they thread, extra character headcannons, what kind of OOC posts there are.
I can tell ye, that I can’t help but smile ear to ear when I see mun that gushes and nerds out in their OOC posts about their muses. Seeing muns that are passionate about their muses and enjoying their own stories and headcannons is a pleasant, and something I more than welcome on my dash.
However, If I see tons of recent posts that involve participating in drama,  callout posts, vaguing others, then… I will be hesitant…))

hello basil!!! i’m the anon that sent the original request of reader being a big dumb dumb and accidentally mailing their love letters to childe in liyue—i personally just wanted to tell you that i absolutely LOVED what you wrote and that i’m so happy and grateful you did my request justice. keep up the good work!!!
if you wouldn’t mind, could i request for a hurt/comfort angst with kaeya and a gn reader? the reader is a fellow knight of favonius that regularly gets dunked on by their friends for their crush on the cavalry captain—but every time their friends insist they confess to him, they joke that “sure, i’ll tell him when i die.” and then they actually nearly die.
while on a mission with kaeya, something terrible happens that seemingly pushes the reader to the brink of death. they’re in his arms and convinced they’re about to die, so with their “dying” breath, they tell kaeya that they’re in love with him before the world goes black.
but then they wake up. 👁 (you know the drill—what happens next is completely up to you!!!)

You came into this mission knowing that it would be quite a bit more difficult than the ones you typically took on. You were merely a B-rank knight, working on your certification to reach A-rank status, which definitely was not an easy feat. Yet the open commission to investigate a newly-uncovered set of ruins in Dadaupa Gorge was requiring one more member of the dual-member expedition team. When you saw who had occupied the first position for the mission, you threw caution to the wind and signed your name for position two, despite the mission being ranked A-level, at the very least. The occupied position? Filled by none other than Kaeya Alberich, captain of the Knights of Favonius cavalry, S-rank soldier and swordsman, and your former mentor. Who also happened to be the man you had hopelessly fallen for.
The mission was assigned by the headquarters of the Knights, specifically for fully-trained Knights only, as the nature of the mission would be too dangerous for your run-of-the-mill adventurer team, and the Knights did not want to be held accountable for any potential casualties or injuries as a result of a mission gone wrong. You and Kaeya had been assigned to go investigate a newly-uncovered set of ruins in the Whispering Woods, supposedly already showing signs of being an Abyss rendezvous point. Apparently, the team of archaeologists who uncovered the ancient rocks from behind a thicket of trees had had many difficulties even making it back to the city of Mondstadt alive. You were frightened, no doubt about it, but you also knew that this was your chance. Your chance to prove yourself and your capability as a knight. Back in your training days before you took the certification exam to become a knight, you were Kaeya’s favorite pupil, a star student. Also possessing a Cryo vision, like the captain himself, certainly did not hurt your reputation in his eyes. Now, having taken on and excelled at countless dangerous B-rank missions, you felt confident in your ability to take on a mere A-rank mission, especially with the captain of the cavalry at your side.
You had almost forgotten about the icy presence at your side, lost in your own daydreams of ambition. After following the paths leading out of Mondstadt, weapons and supplies ready at hand, you and Kaeya had finally made it to the edge of the Whispering Woods. It was starting to get dark, even though the two of you had left reasonably early in the day. The woods seemed so much more vast when their shadows grew longer, waning by the last seams of daylight. Faint howling moaned through the leaves (”Wolves? In the Whispering Woods?”, you thought to yourself), and you felt yourself tremble in the slightest. You couldn’t tell if it was due to the fear or the overwhelmingly strong Cryo aura that Kaeya emitted.
The tall man seemed unaffected by the ominous surrounding, forever carrying himself with an unwavering assuredness. He looked onwards, into the woods, eyes darting back and forth, exhibiting the remarkable surveying skills of a seasoned knight.
“Well, [y/n]”, Kaeya turned to you, with that smug yet rather comforting voice of his. “Are you ready?”
Kaeya’s unshakeable confidence was rather spiriting, you had to admit. Nothing like traipsing into a wild forest, overrun with archons-know-what, with only your own wits and a cunning, distractingly handsome knight to guide you.
“Ready as I’ll ever be, I suppose”, you replied, trying to hide the rookie anxiety from trembling your voice. Damn it, you weren’t even a rookie. You were one of the more experienced knights in the entire Knights of Favonius. You could handle this. Plus, Kaeya has your back. In all the years you had known him, Kaeya had never dropped that rogue-ish grin off of his delicate countenance--he had the face of a prince, but marred with the implications of his mysterious eyepatch (he had never told you how he had lost that eye) and the pierce of his sly smile. It made him all so painfully attractive.
You hate to recall the very first day you met him, the two of you only teenagers, barely adults grown into their own skin, yet he stood at the front of the training yard like the prolific swordsman he was, tan skin gleaming beneath the summer sun, hair tied behind his neck, sinewy muscles stretching as he maneuvered the sword in his hand like it was an extension of his own being. That day, you swore that you would become like Kaeya, that you would learn all you possibly could from him. That was also the day you had fallen hopelessly for the charismatic boy, though you were not aware of it just yet.
Trudging into the forest, you made sure to clutch the weapon at your side a little tighter, wary of any potential threats that could appear in front of you at any moment. You never know how much the Abyss mages could use their magic--they are always using the spirits of Teyvat for evil. Although you had only encountered Abyss mages a small handful of times in your past B-rank missions, you already knew how perilous an interaction with any of them could be. The last time you and a partner engaged with a Pyro mage, you left the site with severe magic burns to your side, which took at least three months to fully heal. Looking at Kaeya, he appeared to be as relaxed as ever, both hands loosely tucked into his pockets, his steps led by his elegant hips. The eerie silence of the woods didn’t seem to bother him at all, a comfortable void between the both of you.
“So, captain”, you begun, doing your best to break the proverbial ice a bit, trying not to let the emptiness of the whole forest get to your head. “How have you been? It’s been a while since we last took an assignment together, I believe. 3 months already, isn’t it?”
Kaeya chuckled. “Oh, drop the formalities, [y/n].” He looked at you with his singular, unobscured eye with a teasing glance. “You’ve always known me as just Kaeya, havent you?”
Blood rushed to your face, although not entirely unwelcome, due to the chilliness of the forest. You hoped that the twilight shadows could hide your red cheeks from the man beside you.
“To answer your question, I am doing exceptionally well, thank you”, he smirked. “Although, the last time I did see you was only about a month ago, at the Windblume Ball. Not sure if you remember it all though—you were rather... intoxicated, it seemed.”
Oh, archons. You didn’t know if your face could possivly get any redder from the embarassment. The Windblume Ball was a month prior, hosted by the Knights for all citizens of Mondstadt to attend, to end the Windblume Festival with a night of wine, music, and dancing. Your group of friends within the Knights convinced you to attend along with them, though they didnt quite succeed at convincing you to finally confess your attraction to the captain of the cavalry himself. You acquiesced only on the condition that you would not have to interact with Kaeya at all that night. The anxiety was simply too much and you did not want to deal with the potential situation of seeing Kaeya in formalwear and absolutely losing your mind, let alone Kaeya seeing you dancing and drinking.
“Oh, come on, [y/n]”, your friends had whined. “If you don’t tell him now, when will you ever? He most definitely finds you attractive, as well.” Chuckling, you took a sip of the wine lrovided by the Dawn Winery. You cringed at the sourness of cheap grapes. “I’ll tell him when I’m dead.” You took another sip of the wine, but over the rim of the glass, you saw the one person you were hell-bent on avoiding.
Kaeya Alberich stood across the room, talking to one of the other knights. He was dressed to the nines, in clothing you had never seen him don before. His hair was parted neatly, his long lovelock secured by a large sapphire band. His lean, upper body was covered by a three piece suit, fitted perfectly around his narrow waist, tailcoat resting neatly by his thick, carved thighs. His pants were pressed tightly, without a wrinkle, and he had brought along his usual white fur cape, giving him the sophisticated look of a king.
In awe, you spluttered in your drink as he caught your eye from across the room, clearly noticing you were staring at him. You turned the other way, seeing that your friends were making fun of your oblivious gawking, and they now excitedly pointed behind you, mouthing the words he’s coming! You tried your best to smooth down your hair and pat down your outfit, before turning back around to see that the captain was standing in front of you, face-to-face, with his hand outstretched.
He looked even more sparklingly glamorous up close, an image of old-world elegance that you never knew him capable of portraying. You suddenly felt more drunk than any cheap wine could possibly make you. Kaeya looked at you, a gleam in his eye, and asked
“May I have this dance, [y/n]?”
The rest of the night was a blur, what with your continued consumption of alcohol, convincing yourself you needed to periodically top up your liquid courage. Kaeya had asked you for a few more dances, as far as you remembered. But from what you could recall, he was just as elegant and charismatic as you had always remembered him to be. He never made you feel out of place.
It was awful that Kaeya only seemed to remember how disgustingly drunk you were, but you were thankful at least that he didn’t seem to recall the perpetual state of flusteredness you were in that night, by his mere presence beside you, and his hands guiding yours as you both danced to the upbeat music of the band.
“Archons, I assure you that I am not the unabashed drunkard I may have seemed to be that night”, you chuckled.
Kaeya let out a hearty laugh, his voice reminding you of the sounds of the bells ringing atop the Cathedral. “Of course not, my dear”, he drawled. “I’ve met many a drunkard in my day—you are far from one; I promise.”
You and Kaeya kept on your way in this manner, making pleasant small talk to fill the silence. You didn’t dare tell him for fear of seeming a coward, but hearing his voice and reminiscing with him diminished the fright you initially felt, entering the woods and taking on this assignment. Kaeya was a master conversationalist, and diplomat too, no doubt, always knowing what to say at what time. His warm remarks and playful banter took your mind off of the imminent danger of your situation, and you didn’t notice the path you were both on narrowing. The sun had already set, and the woods were doused in an eerie darkness, and as you and Kaeya approached the vicinity of the ruins, the thickets grew denser and the tree branches hung lower. Not a sound could be heard--
Until suddenly, Kaeya stepped in front of you, blocking your path with an arm outstretched. Shit. You smelled Abyss magic. How could you have possibly missed the putrid scent of sulfur before?
Kaeya’s grin had fallen. His attention was now beyond only you, as if trying to detect something he sensed nearby. Out of nowhere, a hum grew, louder, until an earblasting pop rang out in front of you and Kaeya, and in its place were three Pyro Abyss mages. Three. You could handle one, if you had a partner with you, but three?
Terror ran down your spine, knowing how difficult your Cryo vision could be against a Pyro mage. Your hand unsheathed the sword at your side with blinding speed, just like you were trained, but before you could even take a step forward, Kaeya was already charging at the mages, ice blasting forth from his swordtip, smashing up against the mages’ shields.
“Aren’t ya glad I caught that, [y/n]?” Kaeya teased, sword cutting through the air and the force fields surrounding the mages, as their strained groans pierced the night air. His movements were swift and effortless; at times his movements were so fast that it looked like he teleported from one spot to the next. This was the grace, the beauty of a true prodigy. “If I hadn’t stopped you, we would’ve been roast boar by now!”
You jumped into action, assisting Kaeya with his assaults against the mages, doing your best to dodge the onslaught of fireballs. You felt the heat of the fire magic graze your extremities more than once, counting your blessings that it was nothing critical. The way the two of you moved in unison, one complementing the other, like an avalanche of piercing ice, was a testament to the years of experience you gained in under Kaeya’s expert tutelage. One sword piercing the left, the other the right, until you both had broken down two of the Pyro mages’ shields. You had never gotten through their force fields in such rapid succession before, you thought, in awe. Swinging your sword calculatedly, whilst utilizing your vision and shooting out ice crystals, you defeated the mage, dealing a killing blow, piercing its side with your sword. You watched the creature groan out gutturally, and eventually dissipate into ash, drifting away.
Turning around, you noticed that Kaeya had already taken care of the other mage, already breaking down the final one’s shield. He dodged each blast of Pyro magic with grace and ease, not even showing any sign of fatigue.
“Hey, good work rookie!”, Kaeya teased, activating his ultimate Cryo weapon, sending a halo of ice crystals about his body, knocking into the mage’s shield with every swing.
You huffed. “I’m not a rookie”, you called back, joining him in his siege upon the last enemy. Exhaustion was quickly catching up to you, although you tried to hide it. You couldn’t let Kaeya down.
Over and over, the pair of you banged upon the force field with your swords, with more difficulty than any of the previous mages. This one was different, somewhat stronger. The grass surrounding the two of you was already lit up in flames, licking at your ankles. If you even so much as tripped, the heat would probably damage you more than a fireball could.
“Watch out, rookie”, Kaeya yelled in your directions, trying to be heard above the cackling of the mage and the raging flames, already beginning to catch onto the trees nearby. The night was filled with a reddish glow--hellish and suffocating. “I think it’s about to activate it’s ultimate.”
The cackling grew louder, as you worked yourself into a frenzy, shooting more and more ice crystals, trying to break it’s force field. Three, dragon-like heads began to emerge around where the mage floated. Fuck. The fire-breathers were out. You had only ever fought a Pyro mage that could use fire-breathers once before--that also happened to be the instance that caused you to be an invalid for several months, healing from a deep flesh burn. But Kaeya was here this time. Things would be okay, right?
You could tell Kaeya was growing panicked as well, his swings becoming a bit more hurried and erratic. You didn’t know, but he was deathly worried about you. He had no idea how experienced you were with dodging the fire-breathers, and he knew he had to make quick work of the blasted mage before things could escalate, Archons forbid you get hurt. Kaeya activated his ultimate once more, and, finally, the mage’s shield broke.
You heaved a sigh of relief, closing in on the Pyro mage. Kaeya’s strength and incredible reliability in battle did not fail to impress you, even beyond just the prowess he had demonstrated as a trainee and a mentor. You finally activated your own ultimate, summoning a boulder made of hard ice. Approaching the mage as you saw it struggle to get up off the ground, the ice in your boulder began to form, and you willed it to hurl towards the mage, intending to finish it off. Finally, you would show Kaeya your true strength, your capability. He could depend on you. Hell, you were his star student. Even if you were afraid to tell him about how he had stolen your heart, you could at least show him that the time and effort he had dedicated to you wasn’t for naught.
The seconds slowed down, as the blinding white ice made its way through the air, aimed straight at the pathetic mage, groveling in the dirt. But beyond the ice, was something even brighter, not making its way to the mage; no, it was headed straight at you. A fireball.
You felt an excruciating pain on your left side, right below your ribcage. A scream in the distance--the mage? No; it was Kaeya’s voice. The white-hot pain blinded you, as you felt your back make contact with the hard ground beneath you. Dammit. Dammit, dammit, dammit. Archons, what will Kaeya think?
Vaguely willing your arm to press into your side to assess the damage, you felt warm, sticky liquid pooling on your waist. Lifting a hand, you saw it drenched in crimson blood, dark in the moonlight. You heard another scream again nearby, this time coming from the guttural squeaks you knew was the mage, the dying cries of a pitiful monster. At once, a pair of arms lifted you from the ground, supporting your head. What a damned disappointment you were.
“[y/n]! [Y/N]! DAMMIT!” You had never heard Kaeya this worked up before. The pain of hearing the panic in his voice was also tinged with a selfish gladness that he cared, that Kaeya Alberich gave a damn if you died. Because, in that moment, you were certain you would die.
Straining out a chuckle, your chest racked up a wet cough, sticky blood now staining the edges of your lips. I’ll tell him when I’m dead, you once said. Well, isn’t this all quite ironic.
“Fucking hell, [y/n], I need you to keep your eyes open”, Kaeya commanded. He was using his captain voice, the one that only comes out when a new recruit wasn’t following orders. “Rookie, don’t you dare pass out on me.” His voice wavered.
Would it be worth it to tell him now? Did you want his last memory of you to be a pathetic, wishful fantasy spilling forth from your bloodstained lips, like the nonsense uttered by a mere child? Your vision spun faster, losing sight of Kaeya, hovering over you. You couldn’t make out his features too clearly in the darkness, but something about the wet drops of water landing on your cheeks told you that it wasnt more blood. You supposed that you should do yourself justice and at least keep the one promise you made that night in Mondstadt.
Straining to open your mouth, you uttered, “Kaeya, I—”
But before you could muster the strength to speak another word, your vision went dark.
*****
The first thing you heard when you woke up was the sound of birds chirping. The second was a silent snoring sound coming from somewhere to your right.
Cracking your weary eyes open, you sensed the faint light of the early morning coming in through an nearby window. Getting your bearings, you realized you had woken up in the Knights of Favonius headquarters hospital. Your damaged adventurer’s clothes were gone, and instead you could feel bandages dressed around the wound at your side. Oh, right. You thought you had died.
Trying to sit up, you fekt an excruciating pain burn through the side of your body that had been hit, setting your nerves on fire. You hissed, and the snoring beside you abruptly stopped.
“Archons, you’re awake.”
Kaeya sat up from the chair he had apparently been sleeping in, still dressed in his captain’s armor, just as dirt-covered and singed as when you last saw him. Was that only last night? You figured Kaeya must have hurried you back to the city before your condition could get any worse.
Fuck. As all your memories of the prior night came flooding back, your eyes pooled up with salty tears. Not only had you cone closest to death than you’ve ever had, you had completely disappointed Kaeya and made a fool of yourself in front of him.
“Kaeya, I’m so sorry—”, you started.
Your words were interrupted by the man next to you leaping into your embrace, arms wrapping your shoulders where you were not injured. “Dammit, [y/n]. When won’t you just shut up.” His voice was muffled by his face buried into your neck. “You don’t have to say a word.”
It scared you, seeing him vulnerable. The ever-cocky and cunning captain of the cavalry, the man who always had a plan and was never caught off-guard. Now, a man bearing his innermost emotions to you, little old you. Had he heard what you begun to tell him last night? Or were things going to return back to the way they were, you admiring his dazzling beauty from a distance, comfortable yet agonized at the degree of separation.
You hoped to the archons for the latter. You hoped that it wouldn’t take another instance where you almost lost your life for the love you felt for him to spill forth. Archons, even if you had to die, it would still all be worth it, if it were with him at your side.
Kaeya trembled as he pressed himself deeper into you, desperately clinging on. “Don’t you dare open your mouth, rookie”, he chided. “I don’t want to hear something you’ll only tell me when you’re almost gone. Please just let me do the talking.”
Pulling back, you looked at him in confusion. His hair was disheveled, eyepatch slightly askew, yet his face was full of an almost childlike wonder, akin to the gleam he possessed when you had first met him, however many years ago.
“Do you think I did it all for nothing?” Kaeya looked at you. “Do you think all those years of training together, eating together, soarring together, was all because I thought you had potential as a soldier? The private walks through Windrise, the nights spent at the tavern, the dance, that damned dance we shared—what did you think that was?” Desperate and exhausted, Kaeya’s eye began to shimmer with tears. “Fucking hell, [y/n]. I’ve always loved you. Since the very beginning, you idiot. Why else would I dedicate all my time, all my energy to you and only you?” He grasped your shoulders tighter. “If you think that I haven’t been madly in love with you since I first laid eyes upon you that day, then you’re fucking wrong.”
You cut him off, burying your hands into his hair—pain be damned—and kissed him. It was bitter and metallic, the taste of both of your blood on your tongue. Kaeya’s neck was ice cold, but his cracked lips were thick and warm, and when you pulled away from them, you suddenly felt like you could take on the world.
“Well”, you remarked. “I’m glad that we got that out of the way.”
a/n: uhuhuhu this is pretty long but i hope you like it! i wanted to improve my writing a bit and elaborate on descriptions a bit more, so i hope i did your request justice!
