There will come a time

There will come a time when you're on top of the world, looking down upon everyone you once knew. Where you will hold your head up high fighting your battles with everyone cheering your side.

Ever since we were young you aimed to be a star. It's always been that way. You, me, Miwa, and your grandfather. The four of us playing volleyball in your backyard. You always had a talent, that wasn't an unknown fact.

Tell me, Kageyama Tobio. Is the view nice up there?

Today I went to see your game. The Lights shining down on the court, but you stood out like a star in the night sky. As the ball touches your hands you set it up to your teammates ever so gracefully. It’s funny to see you so composed. You’re usually hot headed and a socially awkward. It’s almost like you’re a totally different person when you’re on the court.

Toss after toss, point after point, every win, every loss. That’s the world you live in; a life of a professional. How could I ever dream of walking that stage with you?

After the ball touched the wooden floors one final time to confirm your victory, you go celebrate with your team, all cheerful and faces full of smiles. Your smile was the brightest, even if you aren’t the best at it.

As people were shuffling out of the stadium I walk away, just like every time before. Every single damn time, I walk away. I see you happy and I walk away. Who am I to ruin the joy in your face? I ran away so I-

“Y/n…”

Then, all I see is you.

Why did I leave you?

It was a spring day, just as we were finishing our last year of high school together, us on a bench, just like two peas in a pod. You were drinking your milk and I was spacing off into the sky. I had tried to comprehend a way to tell you what was going to happen in the near future. That it wasn’t going to be the two of us anymore, like it had been the years prior.

“Hey, Y/n-“

“I’m leaving for america!”

Just like that, I let it slip. You sat there staring at me.

“Are you for real..?” You meekly reply back to my statement. That’s when it hit me. That’s when the severity of our situation hit me! With my now averted eyes, I took a long pause.

“It’s true.”

What right do I have to come and see you? Five years later I just come back strolling in to watch your game? Five years later I can just exist back in your life? How selfish am I..?

I turn around to escape your presence, to get lost amongst the sea of people, but do the stars shine ever so bright.

You grab a hold of my wrist with that firm grip, securing me in place; and just like that, we’re at a stand still.

Hasn’t this happened before?

I get up to go leave the bench under the canopy of trees, after breaking to you the news. It felt like an eternity of silence had passed by us with how silent you were being. So that’s when I decided to leave. All of a sudden, that’s when it happened. With one fellow swoop. You stood up and grabbed my wrist with a firm grip.

“Don’t go.” Your tone was directed and demanding, clearly stating what you want.

“Tobi-“

“No.”

All of a sudden, I’m pulled into an embrace by you; your body language begging me not to go. You held me close to you, as you cracked your tough outer shell to reveal a sob.

Kageyama Tobio, you’ve lost your grandfather, your teammates, your one chance to be like your grandfather, and now… me.

Kageyama Tobio has really lost it all.

“Y/n… Where have you been..?” You tell me as you hug me in front of hundreds of your fans. With my back now against your chest, I’m sure the media will have a field day with this one.

“Kageyama-“

“It’s Tobio.”

You’re as stern as always

“Well… Tobio. Please let me go.”

That’s not what I want.

“y/n-“

This isn’t what you want either. Is it?

“It’s better that we don’t see each other. I think it’s opening up old wounds”

With a long pause between of silence, you finally spoke up pushing me away alongside it.

“You can’t just walk back into my life and walk back out of it you know! How is that fair to me? Tell me y/n why do you get the call all the shots what about me?!?”

I knew it would come down to this. I knew you would yell at me. It’s no surprise that you would yell at me. So why do your words stab me like a sharp knife? Better yet, why don’t I have the heart to argue back?

“Fine then Tobio, I’ll be out of your way.”

My words come out calm as if I’m unphased by the situation. Then as if I’m truly heartless, I walk away without letting you speak. Truly though, I know deep down inside how I’m feeling. Walking away from the first time was hard enough, but this time? Why is this time even harder than the last..? The situation was the same. It ended in us fighting. You becoming short-tempered, and me walking away. The situation is one and the same, no matter how many times it plays out.

I guess, I can only hope. If only one day in the far distant future. This can end in I love you.

Unfortunately, there will come a time when it’s time to say goodbye and let go of our endearing fleeting memories.
