okay, but putting aside the comedic aspect of this, it is concerning the amount of people who are prompted to vote for candidates just because it's funny. I'm not the biggest fan of how his policy about the boarder sounds [Site], but I do implore anyone who is able to vote in the 2024 US election to please research other candidates.

The media is only going to continue pushing the idea it's inevitably going to be Trump vs Biden 2.0 and we have no other options, that we have to vote for Biden again because of Project 2025. Is that whole thing terrifying?

So I know we here at Startrekfandom love that "came back wrong but from the pov of the wrong" thing and apply it to many different characters and canon situations and I am far from trying to complain about it (I'm "came out wrong" trope myself so I was always gonna obsess over it) but having recently watched a very important episode (you'll know which one) for the first time I think there's a character who hits both tropes mentioned but llike, intertwined, opposite and subverted, and whom I wanna talk about.

Julian Bashir.

From his parents' pov he's "came out wrong but we got him help and he came back better" while from his own pov it's "came out 'insufficient', was destroyed for it, came back wrong and only later slowly came to terms with his new self tho never the process (justifiably so)" and it's heartbreaking because in a way, he's right! Jules Bashir died! His parents had an intellectually disabled child and decided to eugenics him! Julian is not the person he used to be and while I do love the person he is now, that doesn't bring back who he was! Part of me wishes we could've gotten to see Jules at least once and part of me hopes we never do because my heart would shatter.

This isn't a good comparison but nonetheless one I can't help drawing: it's giving similar vibes to anti-vaxxers. "I'd rather risk having a child who is dead than one who's autistic". Obviously this doesn't map over since Julian is still autistic and the procedure his parents subjected him to specifically targeted his intellectual disability and if any folks with id wanna comment on this I definitely recommend you listen to them over me, but it's a similarity I, as an autistic who has encountered anti-vaxxers again and again, can't help but point out. "Give me a normal child or give them death."

This may have been written about already but there needs to be stories about teenage Julian (after finding out and rediscovering who he was) practicing some good ol' recognition of the self through media. I need to hear about how he would encounter a story about someone who came back wrong (I'm gonna assume there's plenty of "wrong" pov stories floating around by the 24th century) and absolutely weep. I need to see Julian mourning Jules, taking years and years to process his feelings, experiencing guilt about how he, the imposter, didn't deserve to live Jules' life.

Came back wrong from the returned's pov but it wasn't an accident. It was done to you deliberately by the people who claim to love you. And now you are here, piloting the corpse of your predecessor.

I think Rainer is a type of person who really wants to be in control of things. His life was very turbulent, so he felt the need to reestablish himself as his own boss. It started with him accidentally getting hit by a car and deciding to "shave off the negative energy" with a buzzcut after his hair became too long in the hospital, and continued into self-destruction in the form of not treating himself if he got hurt, "choosing" a path. Rainer also originally was very sporty and quite big, but after Michael's death he also took the lack of sleep and food as a way to be in control of his life. Jill and Thomas were too distraught by the chain of events in relation to Marvin to really pay attention to their adult son.

it's been so long since i last watched LOK that i honestly sort of forgot how much i don't like it. i'm on book 3 episode 7, i genuinely forgot that they just handed bumi airbending and brought back airbenders the weird way they did (when it would've been much more realistic that aang at some point found a group of very old survivors/descendants of survivors in hiding because genocide of a nomadic people who can fly just could not have caused a total extinction), i forgot how much mako doesn't have a personality, how much i dislike suyin and the way the narrative treats lin, and also... how little interaction korra and asami actually have with each other at this point??

like, you would think k*rrasami would be really important to me as a canon relationship between two bi women in the avatar universe, and i understand to an extent why it's written the way it is and won't deny how important it is overall as part of the history of LGBT representation in cartoons, but until now i sort of forgot why exactly i feel so little personal investment in it. i know they get more interactions later on but so far i wouldn't ship them if i didn't know what was coming because there's so little there. i don't even really like asami all that much outside of fanon stuff, nor do i particularly care about anyone at this point other than korra and bolin (and maybe kai and jinora too) and that's because everybody else either has extremely little personality imo, is annoying to me if they do have one, or is the product of the gaang being bad parents which is something i refuse to accept :(

and speaking of, the terrible way the show treated katara is actually pretty much the main thing i've always remembered about it and i have definitely ranted about that. the rest of it is just so incredibly meh for me that it doesn't even make me feel like angrily analyzing it and that's sad to me because there honestly was a lot of potential. like why don't we get an actual episode or two about mako and bolin's backstory instead of just hearing about it?? what happened with them actually does sound really interesting, but the show does nothing to make me care. it's like if ATLA had never given us any flashbacks about sokka and katara's backstory. and so much of books 1 and 2 is wasted on stupid annoying love triangle drama ajsjdjfkdk sometimes i wish i were more like my dad who is enjoying the show by simply not thinking very critically about it.

A lot of people in mainland China are perfectly capable of getting around the so called 'Great Firewall of China' and interacting with the internet beyond it but the thing is a lot of them just flat out don't want to or don't really care all that much. Yeah sure the internet is heavily censored, but outside of that non-English spaces have gotten smaller and smaller while English takes over as the lingua franca of the internet, and they may or may not be able to read and understand English very well.

Also a lot of people on the internet beyond the 'firewall' are very hostile to them, they get treated like naive idiots or brainwashed infiltrators for the ccp. I remember a few years back when a lot of Chinese fanfic writers started uploading their stories on ao3 en masse because there had been a big uptick in websites that host fanfiction getting taken down and some people were so utterly vile about it, making jokes about how they could get the fics taken down by mentioning the Tiananmen Square massacre in the comments and things like that.

All because they were apparently offended by their favorite tags having more non-English works that can very easily filter out so they don't have to look at them at all. Because God forbid a fanfiction website that already greatly skews towards English fics have more works in other languages, right? That's like the only thing I miss about fanfiction.net, it had way more non-English fics, well that and more stories for certain fandoms than ao3 does.

And it's not like a lot of tech companies and other governments don't censor the internet to some extent or another, China isn't unique in that regard, it's just particularly infamous for being so heavy-handed and easy to use as a red herring.
