Games I Played in 2021

Because Why Not? 

Only listing games I spent a “Significant” time playing (Let’s say 10+ hours) or played to finish.  Not including like, dumb webgames or mobile games (which I didn’t play much of anyway.)  There’s lots of other games I tried and decided against playing, or dipped a toe into and thought “Yeah I’ll get into this” and then have not yet.

Wildermyth

I’m going to start with the game that inspired me to make this post, just because I really think more people should know about Wildermyth.  It’s an RPG where you create characters who yes, fight monsters and save the world, but also live their lives in the background and in the in-between years between chapters.  They fall in love, get married, and have children who also join your party.  You play out the story, often with your earliest heroes retiring before the story is done, leaving the youngsters to finish the work.  They can die heroically.  They can be blessed (or maybe cursed) with transformations turning them into werewolves, ravens, elementals also completely changing how your character works in some cases.  And then you can make some into legacy heroes which can be pulled into other adventures.

There are several campaigns to play out, each starting a fresh story.  There’s a crafting element.  There are pets, artifact weapons... the game is deep.

There are mods in the Steam Workshop which will make the game easier than intended, if you choose to use them.

The artwork is papercraft, but it’s gorgeous.  The story plays out in comic-like panels, which somehow works so well. The dialog and narration is poetic.  The overland map is generated at random.  You will get surprisingly attached to some of your characters.

Honestly I can’t recommend this game enough.  It was the best new thing I played all year, and has gotten some accolades to back it up.

Cyberpunk 2077

Technically started in 2020, but finished in 2021.  I didn’t pay any attention at all to this game before it was released, but it looked interesting so I bought it just before release, ignored 98% of the controversy surrounding it, and enjoyed the hell out of it for what it was.  Am disappointed all the big plans for updates and DLC seem to have gone out the window.  But I did nearly everything this game had to offer, and as a bonus when I was about 2/3rds done I upgraded to a 3090FE so at some point, maybe this year, I’m excited to revisit the game with the graphics cranked up the entire time.  Romanced River, loved all the main characters.  It was worth it.  I understand that this game didn’t live up to expectations, but I went in expecting nothing and loved it

Fallout 4 (Incomplete)

I tried replaying FO4 and I probably put about 30 hours into it and haven’t gotten back to it.  I keep meaning to.  But I probably did the typical Fallout/Elder Scrolls thing where I spent as much time fiddling with mods as I did playing, and I did make the game kind of unstable.  Oops.  Didn’t make it far enough to do a romance, but I did have a mod installed where Nate (your husband) survives so that was interesting, having him along.  It was REALLY nice to play with all the graphics cranked up, though.  I’mma finish!  I played like 200 hours the first time and never finished the game because I was mad that my preferred ending wasn’t possible.  (I wanted to take over the institute but make it a force for good.

Mass Effect 3

Did a ME3-only playthrough (before the LE came out) to knock out some goals I’ve always had of the game, seeing a few things different than my typical all-Paragon-win-everything-Femshep/Kaidan canon.  Played as MShep, did several renegade choices - including betraying Wrex - that I normally wouldn’t, and finally saw the MShep/Kaidan romance.  Game started crashing during Citaldel Epiloge Mod and I never got around to troubleshooting that so I guess technically I didn’t finish completely, but good enough.

Mass Effect (1) Legendary Edition - 1.5 Times

I played ME1 on release up through finishing Noveria and nearly every sidequest possible to this point, then decided to put it on hold til the modders could do some modding.  Like I’ve posted extensively about lately, I did finish it and am now waiting on the LE2 Community Patch to get started on a LE2 playthrough.  Did my canon Femshep/Kaidan/Vanguard/Paragon run and will continue to do so for amazing screenshots.  But I’m already planning my next trilogy playthrough.  Really, really love LE1 and all its changes, especially with the mods helping perfect it.

Boyfriend Dungeon

I actually Kickstarted this game way back when because it looked hilarious.  I do not play “Visual Novel” type games typically, just not may jam.  But this one had the isometric fighting element and seemed off the wall, so I was like “Sure!  Why not!”

So I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it!  I did most of the romances (not the kid in college, felt they were too young, and I dipped out of Sunder’s) but my main romance was Issac.  The story was interesting, the fighting was fun, good experience overall.  Will probably play again when the last two characters are released.

The Outer Worlds

I’d played this game on release via Xbox Game Pass, then waited for it to come to Steam and go on sale, including the DLC, to buy it for real and do a second run.  As I hadn’t done the DLC before, that was the main draw to replay.  I really loved the game the first time around, and felt the same this time, but will forever be mad I cannot romance Vicar Max, (or Nyoka).  Especially after softening him up after his personal quest.  But it was still really fun and I enjoyed both of the DLCs, Murder on Erandios a little more.

New World

Yeah, I played New World.  The launch was terribly typical botched MMO launch, and things didn’t get much better from there.  I did join a company of nice people and reconnected with an old friend while playing for a bit, and I did enjoy a lot of what I did when I did play it, but after things got so bad that they started shutting off the economy for a week or two at a time, I dipped until this game can get its shit together.  Not to mention the way that the guild leaders are able to fuck over the playerbase even more than they can in a typical MMO and that it’s nearly impossible to get into the endgame/PVP stuff (which, admittedly, I wasn’t close to and didn’t do ANY PvP in this game while I played) without being in one of the elite guilds.

Amazing visuals, until you realize they all repeat themselves a lot.  There was a lot of copy/pasting to get this game out.  I usually try to be more positive about games I played, but tbh this is one I probably would have told myself not to really bother with, at least not yet, if I could turn back time.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister

Another game I’d Kickstarted.  A pretty faithful D&D5e adaption mechanics-wise.  Really enjoyed the gameplay, and yay modders bringing in more options.  Also there are now player-made campaigns being made and released for more content (like Neverwinter Nights.) 

The main campaign is... good.  Not great.  Enjoyable.  Still a recommendation.  I did enjoy how you get to create your own party and can assign them personalities so that they have unique voiced lines.  If you want to pay a 5e-based video game, it’s a good one to try.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker

I made it uh... maybe halfway(?) through this game on release a year or two ago.  Giving it another shot.  Slowly making my way through it again.  I don’t know if I will finish, I load it up and play a few hours every couple of weeks still.  Something about it just doesn’t grab me, even though I feel like it should.  I’m cheating heavily this time to get through the more tedious aspects.  TBH I more feel like I’d like to play Kingmaker in a TTRPG using PF2e rules.  Does that exist? Someone run that for me and other nice people who like PF2e, thx.

The Sims 4

I mean... who didn’t play The Sims in one way or another this year?  I really like playing The Sims while like, watching Critical Role, or MST3k, or any movie/show I want to watch but not pay 100% attention to.

What I maybe spent the most time on with The Sims 4 this year is making an entire house as a map for my Sunday night D&D game that I run.  Which is what that screenshot was from, the boss-fight room that was a magic/alchemy lab that had been trashed by The Monster.

House Flipper 

Like The Sims 4, it’s a great game to play while paying a lot more attention to something else.  Also like The Sims 4, it’s about decorating houses.  But also about cleaning up houses and doing tasks for people and earning money.  Yes I think House Flipping IRL is Not Great.  But it’s a pleasant distraction game and I’ve been enjoying playing it.  This is a screenshot of the starter shack you get as a home/office, I’m mostly done redecorating it.

Torchlight III

I’d played 1 & 2 and enjoyed them.  Three was fine.  I enjoyed it.  Nothing groundbreaking.  Again, I mostly played it while watching CR/movies/TV as it didn’t take a lot of concentration.   Eh, I don’t have a screenshot and I’m not gonna go get one.

The Stanley Parable

lol just kidding, all I did was boot up the game and get the achievement for not playing the game for 5 years.  I should replay it, though.  It’s a cool game.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

I mean, I’ve been playing this game since Beta, but some years I don’t touch it.  And I didn’t for most of this year.

But since I’ve been playing that long, one of my big regrets is that all my screenshots from my first few characters are all small, and ugly in many ways.  The graphics in game have been somewhat improved since 2011 but also I couldn’t run the game at even close to the max settings back around launch.  Not only that, but there wasn’t armor customization and both you and your companions were often stuck looking like a clown (sometimes literally) because you needed to gear yourself and them in whatever you could find, and that usually didn’t match.

But a lot changed since then. 

So, I went and made an exact visual clone of my main character (A trooper), and named her the same thing with one extra letter, and ran through the main storyline plus a couple of favorite planetary quests again, screenshotting and videoing along the way.  Technically I haven’t finished, still need to do Corellia and the endgame, but I will.  Also I just played around on my other characters a bit (I have so many) and uh... spent a lot of cartel coins (I had tons saved up from being a subscriber) on this winter sale + unlocks.  But yay, lots of pretty (for an 11 year old game) with maxed settings and matching outfits and outfit changes with some of the best looking outfits in the game.  I’ve made some gifs, need to make some more to keep posting that Beth/Aric romance storyline.

Might do the same for a couple of other favorite early characters.

Next I gotta get my main through the Onslaught storyline, because the last time I played seriously was right around when that came out, but then I burned out.

Fable 2

I don’t have a screenshot because I’ve been playing it on my Xbox360.  Literally the first time I booted my 360 up in 5+ years.  I have not bought any other consoles except a Switch since then because I just don’t play consoles much.

Stalled on the playthrough a bit, but I’m about to recruit Stephen Fry’s character.  Probably need to give up on doing a completionist game and just put my head down and finish it.

Minor Mentions:

I literally stopped playing Animal Crossing New Years 2020. I played every day from May til then.  I picked it back up for a week or two, but not sure I’ll actually be a daily player and I hate getting guilt tripped by the game and having cockroaches in my virtual house every time I don’t log in for a few days.

I played a Hidden Objects / Adventure game all the way through on my Switch.  It was cheap, and entertaining enough.  I don’t remember the name of it and don’t care enough to go look.

I play Mah Jong and Solitare games on my Switch to wind down at night while listening to podcasts and hanging out with Patchy before going to sleep.  It’s probably sad that besides maybe Animal Crossing, this is what I’ve used my Switch for the most.

Also have a Mahjong game on Steam that is my other “distraction while watching Critical Role / MST3k” game.

Played a little bit of the Star Trek games that released on GOG this year.  It IS fun running around Voyager.  Also tried again to play Star Trek Online and I just CAN NOT get into the spaceship fighting part of the game, which is like, half of the game.  I am bad at it.  I don’t want to do it.  I like the storyline/ground team/building the spaceship parts of it.  But you can’t really play STO without the spaceship fighting part, and there’s no Story Mode in an MMO.

Does playing Dungeons and Dragons on Roll20 count as video gaming?  It doesn’t.  But I did that **A LOT** in 2021.  And will continue to do so in 2022.

Games I would like to play in 2022:

ME:LE2 & 3, close to starting my MELE2 playthrough as soon as that Community Patch drops.

Finish Pathfinder: Kingmaker maybe? And maybe buy that 2nd Pathfinder game, is it better?

Also play, possibly finish, Fallout 4?

If Baldur’s Gate 3 releases, I’ll play it.  I bought it already, played for a few hours, and am waiting on release before I play again.

Finish Fable 2 and play Fable 3 which I bought on Steam last year.  I did play F3 to completion when it came out, but two attempts after that and I got caught in the game-breaking bug that gets you trapped in the “home base” area.  Heard that’s fixed on the PC version.  I hope so.

I bought No Man’s Sky because my brother loves it.  I dipped my toe in and haven’t been back.  Would like to.

Bought Outward and haven’t tried it.  Would like to.

The Waylanders - I Kickstarted this and the official release date is in February.  Played the first hour or two and think I’ll like the full game.  There’s 2 or 3 other games I KS’d that may release this year that look good.

New SWTOR expansion drops in February, will probably try it.

I stalled out on my playthrough of Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2020.  I should finish that.

Possible Replays,: Enderal (seriously, please play Enderal.), a renegade “fuck up” Mass Effect (LE) run where I deliberately ignore/lose most of my beloved companions, Cyberpunk 2077, Pillars of Eternity 1&2, maybe Baldur’s Gate 2 before BG3?  All of these should take a backseat to newer games I haven’t played at all or lately.

I’m sure there are things coming out I haven’t thought of, and surprise drops may happen.

OnS Character Analysis - Mikaela Hyakuya/Shindo

Hello everyone, after a good while, I feel inspired again to update analysis and theories, therefore, let’s talk about something very sensitive, this character analysis will dwell around Mikaela Hyakuya, therefore, let’s begin!

P.S: Analysis are held within a neutral view and ships are excluded

Mikaela Hyakuya is known to be as one of the characters carrying a painful life ever since he was a child; many might know that his parents weren’t the best one for him, along the fact they were followers of the Hyakuya Sect. Of course, there was a time of blessing for him since he was able to find a beautiful family filled with kids; that made him feel responsible for them, specially when Yu arrived to his life and the vampires appeared.

It could be said that, despite the outcome of his childhood life, he was able to smile again thanks to the help of the Hyakuya orphanage kids along Yu’s arrival which only increased that happiness within him:

Of course, such happiness and peace didn’t last forever due to the arrival of the virus and the vampires; such events only made them become food for the vampires, they were gathered in order to keep them in order to not lose resources, and of course, such events would unleash a tragedy, a tragedy that would crush the minds of two kids, being Mika and Yu:

As many might recall, we’ve seen Yu’s side but, what about Mikaela?

After Mikaela became a vampire, his happy demanor changed drastically, as a half vampire, he was disgusted with himself, he hated living with the curse he was imposed with even if such curse would lead him to meet Yu again, but within this, he saw the hidden truth of the world, which was about how humans performed secret experiments which eventually would lead him to not trust humans:

But within this, after reuniting with Yu, he aimed to live, he aimed to trust even a little the humans Yu labeled as family; but of course, due to his distrustful nature along the fact of what happened in the past, he wasn’t able to open up to them, he wasn’t able to communicate better with Yu’s friend even if they respected him and treated him as an equal.

Within the short period lived with the squad, he did grow to the point he did care about what they thought and decided. Mika could have taken different paths against them but at the end, he followed them and walked down as a family even if he couldn’t forget his first important family.

After some time, Mika would fight all together with the squad when it came to face down enemies; and of course, within the story, we’d see his hate towards Guren Ichinose, which, to certain extend is justified since he only saw one side of Guren in the whole story, he didn’t see the side Yu managed to see back when he was rescued or picked up outside of the vampire capital.

It could be said that, before the tragedy, Mika’s mentality was all focused on protecting his last remaining family and important person. All he aimed was to have a bit of peace instead of fighting aimlessly, but of course things went down. Peace wasn’t something that could be achieved easily.

But, when exactly were we able to grasp Mika’s mental health or rather what he felt towards his own self?

The first time we were able to see his real emotions were back in this panel:

Back when they were fighting against Guren, Mika aimed to unleash a powerful attack towards Guren, of course, Guren’s plan was to halt him but that did only the opposite, Mika kept going until he released all the blood his body harbored in order to save Yu, but within this, there’s something to be cleared, what could it be?

Correct. Mika never saw himself as someone righteous, but rather, as a disgusting creature, someone who lost his chance to live the same way as Yu did, someone who lost the power to label himself as human even if his “heart” was human like (a metaphor dear readers, Mika’s emotions were human despite his vampire state)

After these events, Mika became a demon, and of course, this takes over a theory I updated 2 months ago:

The demon Mikaela awoke as a demon without memories, he awoke as someone who aimed to feed on human desires to sustain a dream world on which he gazed upon a small family living happily taking care of each other, even if he didn’t recall who he was at that time, he was happy gazing at them:

And of course, as I stated in the theory linked in there, Mikaela’s world or samsara is made out of what his heart truthfully wished, a world on which he could be happy with his family, but, of course, the price for it is to destroy his memories of who he was in order gaze upon an unreachable dream.

The world his soul resided happily is a reflection of what he couldn’t protect back when he was alive, and this is heavily exploted in the latest chapter in a very gruesome way:

After the demons invaded Mikaela’s samsara, the demon Mikaela wasn’t able to keep the fight against those 3, allowing Asuramaru reach what he aimed to protect, thus leading to a small chase until he managed to unveil what Mika desired the most, which is to receive all the blame of his decisions.

But what does this represent?

This represents the huge and damaged heart, mind and soul Mikaela has. 

In terms of his heart, he couldn’t cope over the fact that he wasn’t strong enough to protect the kids he loved the most, including Yu; he knew from the depthness of his heart that he simply allowed everything happen without thinking when us as readers are aware the fact that Ferid Bathory is smarter than Mika, that he always had the upperhand against him.

In terms of his mind, he feels deep regret, he feels rage towards his own self and disgust of what he ended up becoming, he hates the fact that he ended up leading his family to a trap on which they’d lose their life; he hates the fact he got turned into a vampire and that is heavily reflected by how he sees himself as a vampire in previous chapters; and most of all, he feels like a total failure for not being able to rescue the last member of his family which is Yu; what do I mean?

He feels he failed to protect Yu from the experiments; their escape only lead him to think everything ended up as misfortune.

As for his soul, his soul only desired to get a happy time with his family, but the fact that regret and grief filled it instead of something positive, it only made him think of mentally punish himself, he constantly gave dark thoughts about humans, about vampires, and mostly about himself, he reached a point on which his mental health tore apart and what only kept him going was the fact Yu was his only family left from the one that saved him from despair.

The fact that he finally broke down in the recent chapter shows all the pain he has carried within himself:

Despite the fact that the demon Mikaela has no memories of himself, and the reason is because he views what his soul wished for at the loss of his memories, but the fact that he ended up crying reflects a lot what his inner self always felt, that despair of not being able to save up what he wished to protect, for alwayss being weak.

The fact that Mika’s life has been a constant torture and samsara, on which he reached a point of drowning on his dark thoughts, reflects how much he has endured deep within his heart.

It can be said that, Mikaela Hyakuya/Shindo is a guy with a tender heart that always worries about those who he cares the most, but the fact that the scenarios he has faced ended up taking away what he loved, has only destroyed and shattered him slowly to pieces in an endless circle of pain and constant torture.

Of course, as any samsara, this one will be shattered.

AAH! 🤩 Thank you so much for your inquiries!! 😆 This is my first ever Tumblr ask challenge to receive, so I'm honored 😖 but it's a lot! 😱 I'll try to answer everything thoroughly. 😅 Here it goes! 😁

3. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I love the idea of shapeshifting., Not just the kind of transfiguration that Tonks or McGonagall do, but more like adopting the abilities of different animals suited for different scenarios. Like, if I could grow bat wings to fly and then switch to develop lungs like a seal to swim for long periods or the eyes of a tarsier to see in the dark, etc., that'd be dope.

But my superhero alterego actually has the ability to manipulate luck, so she can basically be a blessing or curse to others. It's based on her own storage of luck though. So if she's had a lot of bad luck lately, she can deal it out; alternatively she can give out good luck when she gets lucky. It's kind of a game of balance, but she has meters for both that get distributed and replenished.

5. Tell us some funny drunk story.

I've really only ever been drunk once. It was a time when I was house-sitting for some friends, watching their two dogs while they went on vacation (the usual). I invited a different friend over, my bestie from middle school. Typically, I have a code for myself to not invite guests into clients' homes, and doing so this time set the dominos a-topplin'. We decided to have a Toy Story marathon, like normal grown ups. To make it really adult, we thought we'd make it more interesting by playing drinking games throughout all the movies. There are four movies. Normally, I don't drink much, just a glass of wine or a beer every once in a while, so ... we got big cans of Mike's extra hard lemonade in different fruity flavors (because ... adults watching kids' movies). Anyway, we had our snacks (French macarons and Wegman's pizza, q classic combination, but not really), the dogs had been fed and set up for bed, and we had our jammies on. All was well for the first two movies: we're reliving our childhoods and the early days of cgi animation, laughing and having a grand old time. By the third movie, what's left of the large pizza is cold. So we stumble down two flights of stairs, carrying a mostly empty pizza box, while dogs jumped all over us, trying to get to the oven in the kitchen on the main floor, like this was some kind of epic high fantasy novel quest. I put the pizza on a cookie sheet. The oven's preheated. Pizza goes in. When pizza is all melty again, I grab a potholder, because I'm responsible. BUT it's not covering the end of the metal handle poking out, and I get BURNED, literally, right on the wrist. Which is the hand I usually pose with for selfies. I've had to totally rearrange how I take pictures of myself now because I have an obvious scar there. Anyway, I stick my hand under cold water and get some ice on it right away, so it doesn't actually hurt as much as it probably should have; granted I have a lot of experience with burn damage, so I may be somewhat desensitized to it. Moral of the story, kids, don't heat up food while you're drunk. I don't even remember what happened in the third movie tbh. I passed out after finishing my third large can of alcoholic beverage, and we went to see TS4 at the theater the next morning, hungover like fools.

10. Who was the last person to disappoint you?

The answer is me. I constantly disappoint myself, because I have impossibly high standards. I tend to be very ambitious and driven, so when I don't live up to my own expectations for myself, I'm disappointed. But failure is a chance to learn. Keep moving forward!

13. If the whole world listened to you right now, what would you say?

🤔 I don't really remember most of my lies because they're small, meaningless, and/or usually get cleared up right away. Plus, I don't normally like to lie, so most of them are accidents from misunderstandings or possible future truths or super obvious for joking purposes, like hyperbole or sarcasm.

40. What was the last gift you gave?

When my sister and I rode the bus to NYC from DC to go see Frozen on Broadway together, I gave her a keychain. I got us matching Funko Pop Frozen 2 keychains to commemorate the event. We both Disneybounded as the queens, so we got the characters we matched; she got Anna, and I got Elsa.

47. When was your first kiss?

It depends on what kind of kiss you mean. When I was in 1st grade, I kissed a boy's forehead on a dare. Then in like maybe 3rd grade, I kissed my best friend on her lips out of excitement for something that had happened. But if you mean romantically, I've only ever kissed one person in the lips, and that was my first love. He was my boyfriend in the beginning of high school, back when I still had braces, so it was probably freshman year. He used to come to my house after school some times, and we went for an evening stroll along the golf course one night. He kissed me, and I kissed him again, but then I turned away when he tried to kiss me again. My face was hot and red when we got back, and his mom was waiting to take him home; she knew exactly what had happened because she made a joke about it, and I started getting dizzy from embarrassment. He dumped me a couple years later and then almost a decade later, we started hooking up again, but then he decided he just wanted to be friends, which I couldn't handle, so I cut off ties with him. 🤷‍♀️ His loss

61. Something you find romantic?

There was a time when I liked a guy in my Japanese-American cultural exchange group. The whole club went to an obon matsuri at a Buddhist temple one year with crafts, food, kimono fashion show, taiko, etc. We danced together under the stars with my dress swirling at my feet and thousands of fireflies twinkling out of the ground around us. It was so magical. Then we all went for the best sushi I've ever had and my first beer, which I split with a girl who's now one of my besties. He walked me to my car and made sure I got home safely. Turns out he was 17 years older than me (short and baby faced), twice divorced, and had kids. I was barely 21. Yikes.

87. Meaning behind your blog name?

This is a fun question! I've always loved animation and making my own characters. When I was really little, some time in elementary school, I was super into the show Xiaolin Showdown, which has a character named "Omi". I used that as the basis for the name of my first ever OC and then several other OC's after her haha then in middle school, my best friend had the same first name as me, just spelled differently (yes, the same ms bestie from the drunken shenanigans above. We're getting brunch next weekend too). So we started calling each other by our OC's names, Omi and Lala (Omishu and Laphelliae). We even introduced each other under these identities, so the name stuck. Everyone called me Omi in highschool, and it drove my mom crazy! Even the teachers called me that; Mom absolutely hated it. Now it's my online alias for almost every platform I use. If you ever see a username with Omishu, Omishu Kitsuni, or OmishuK, chances are it's me!

95. Share your favourite quote.

Too many!! Short answer, THE ENTIRE BIBLE. Long answer ... Uh, it depends on the context. The whole series of quotes from the Disney wisdom collection, yesss. A couple on speaking/listening that I appreciate are: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln and "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." Epictetus. I live by Mark 12:28-31, though: "... 'Which commandment is the most important of all?' Jesus answered, 'The most important is, '... you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.'"

98. Have you ever made your mum cry? What happened?

Yes, in college my mentor's husband preached a message about forgiveness. I had to leave in the middle to call my mom. She had verbally abused me and my sisters while I was growing up, which has caused me to develop multiple psychoses in my childhood that I'm still learning to deal with today. My unrealistic expectations are also caused by trying to earn her approval. Anyway, I had to tell her that I don't hold it against her and recognize the stresses of parenting and appreciate how she's tried to do her best for me. We were both crying. She had no idea the affect of her words on me, but our relationship has improved so much since then. We're both careful to speak the truth in love with each other now.

Spiritual Spotlight: Trelmarixian, the Lysogenic Prince

Obedience: Abstain from eating or drinking until you begin feeling pangs of hunger. Spend just under an hour meditating on this state, then spend the remaining time gorging yourself on any substance within reach, even if it’s not entirely suitable as food, such as soil, ash, or garbage. Benefit: Gain a +4 profane bonus on saving throws against effects that cause exhaustion, fatigue, nausea, or sickness.

That’s a REAL beefy benefit that gives you a generous bonus to avoiding some of the more crippling status effects in the game (nausea and exhaustion), which also comes in handy for making saves against whatever horrible substances you shovel into your craw after you decide you’ve suffered enough and rapidly begin consuming everything you can get your grimy little mitts on. Tex Mex Ian is the first of the Horsemen we’ll see in End Of The World Month: Ride of the Four, and his Obedience really sets the stage for how agonizing all of the Obediences for the Four Horsemen are going to be.

This Obedience is one of the harder ones to perform when compared to many others we’ve reviewed so far or will review in the future, as it requires a lot of setup. First off, depending on your metabolism you’ve got to go without eating or drinking for anywhere from 10 hours to a full day in order to begin actually feeling the level of hunger Trill Maracas wants you to suffer, so that gluttonous feast you gorge on at the end of the Obedience? That’s probably going to be the only meal you’ll eat until you next begin your Obedience, aside from the occasional berry or single mouthful of water.

If you don’t want to actually begin suffering the penalties of starvation, you’ll probably also have to set yourself out a feast before you begin your Obedience, too. If not a feast, then something to keep you from actually starving for the coming day while you pack the rest of your stomach full to bursting with handfuls of grass clippings and dirt. Trail Mix’s Obedience requires you to keep yourself on the edge of starvation at all times, and the benefit makes you better at handling it. At the very least, it’s an easy Obedience to keep hidden from snoopy folks; you can cover your worship of the Lysogenic Prince by simply claiming to have some form of vow of restraint or religious belief that bars you from eating with company. Or eating at all, except at breakfast. Of the Four, this is the easiest ritual to hide from prying eyes.

Also, obviously, creatures that don’t actually experience hunger technically can’t perform this Obedience without DM fiat. And for extra irony depending on how your interpret these rules, that may include Tremarixian’s own Souldrinkers once they reach Souldrinker 4 and thus no longer need to eat.

I may as well start putting a new intro paragraph in, eh? Well Boons usually come at levels 12, 16, and 20 if you merely take the Fiendish Obedience feat, but having levels in the Evangelist, Exalted, or Sentinel prestige classes allow you to unlock the respective bonuses much faster. The trio of prestige classes can be entered as early as level 7; taken as early as possible, you unlock the Boons at levels 10, 13, and 16 instead.

Daemon worshipers may elect to class into the Souldrinker prestige class instead of the Evangelist, Exalted, or Sentinel class, and may choose any of the three Boon lists they wish to have.

Boon 1: Jackal’s Blessing. Gain Memory Lapse 3/day, False Life 2/day, or Vampiric Touch 1/day.

Memory Lapse is an odd choice for the Horseman of Famine to hand out, but it’s not an unwelcomed one. It’s more useful than some people give it credit for, though it falls pretty hard into the category of “why waste a spell slot on this when I could use this other thing?” spells. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about that! Memory Lapse more or less erases the last six seconds of someone’s memory, which comes in handy if you commit a social faux pas and want to try again with a Bluff or Diplomacy check, but it’s also useful for things like: Repositioning after being revealed and then erasing your new hiding spot from memory, removing the memory of an ally casting a protective buff on themselves so the enemy doesn’t realize it, screwing someone over in a gambling game, or simply playing the card of “Oh no, you’ve been stabbed! Who could have done such a thing?” All without anyone realizing you’re mucking with someone’s head.

Unfortunately, Memory Lapse has a big weakness in that it allows a saving throw against it, and if the victim makes their save, whatever embarrassing event you were trying to erase is still fresh in their mind. On days when you’re not feeling particularly clever, False Life is always a good choice, giving you anywhere from 10 to 20 temporary hit points to pad out your total a little. It may only block one more blow, but that in itself means the character in question has one more round to fight back. And Vampiric Touch? That’s just a great spell because eventually, everyone gets caught in melee. It starts at 5d6 damage by the time you first get it and grants you temporary HP equal to the amount of damage dealt, hurting your foe and giving you--on average--about 5 more temporary hit points than False Life does.

Boon 2: Unending Whispers. You may cast Insanity 1/day as a spell-like ability.

Boring. Handy, but boring. It’s a permanent Confusion on a single target, but it’s beaten by successful Will save, which turns its 1/day nature against itself. Throwing it on an enemy bruiser can potentially earn you several rounds of breathing room, and I suppose you can throw it on some unfortunate passer-by to create a distraction, but like most Boons which offer one-dimensional spell effects, Unending Whispers is rather boring and inflexible.

...Or would be, if I didn’t just remember spell-likes have no components. Perhaps you masquerade as a Good-aligned priest, and speak a “holy word” which “sends demons into spasms,” afflicting one unfortunate fool with your Insanity to turn a whole group against them. Having the power to say just about anything you feel like and have someone go mad from the “revelation” is a unique roleplaying opportunity I failed to think about or explore well, but we still have too many Boons to go over for me to rattle on about it!

Boon 3: Kiss of the Lysogenic Prince. Once per day as a standard action, you may make a touch attack against a target to infect them with a portion of your essence as if it were a curse. They can resist it with a successful Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 your Hit Dice + your Charisma modifier), but if they fail, they become infected. From there on out, so long as you and the target are on the same plane, you may use a free action at any point to perceive the world through their senses; you see all they see, feel all they feel, smell all they smell, etc, for as long as you wish until you end this remote viewing as another free action. In addition, once per day, you may automatically hijack their body, controlling it utterly for 1 round plus your Charisma modifier in rounds (min 1). The victim does not remember anything that happens during this possession. You may only have one victim infected at a time; infecting a new victim immediately ends the infection on the previous one.

Now HERE is a power with some seriously sinister applications. It may seem odd that the Horseman of Famine has such an ability, but Tonsillectomy isn’t just the god of famine, he’s the god of all things devouring and destructive, such as parasites or cancer. A domain he sometimes (unwillingly) shares with Apollyon, the Horseman of Pestilence.

This ability is insidious, to the point that using it in combat feels like a waste. Slapping it onto an important or recurring NPC allows you a measure of control over them, monitoring their actions until you see an opening to cause some mischief or grief. Note that once the victim fails their initial save, they don’t get another one to resist your control, and the ability can only be broken by curse-breaking magics (which have to beat the save DC) and lasts forever unless you find a different victim to snag. The fact that the memory of any moments you spend puppeteering their body is erased is also magnificent for getting them into (or out of) trouble... Or gaslighting them, if you’re that evil. And, since you’re working for one of the Horsemen, you are!

Note that this ability causes no injury or any negative conditions on the victim. It’s not obvious you’ve infected them unless someone scans over their soul with some kind of curse-detecting spell, This means they--and everyone around them--will likely have no idea that they’ve been infected, even as you start exercising control over them. Obviously the best use is to control them when they’re alone, so no one else notices the off behavior, but the ever-popular “make your puppet stab someone important/stab someone they care about” and “frame your puppet for doing something horrible” are both options.

Also note that, unlike with the Dominate spells, you can force your victim to perform self-destructive acts as well. Have fun with that.

Boon 1: Jackal’s Grace. Gain Ray Of Enfeeblement 3/day, Feast of Ashes 2/day, or Cup of Dust 1/day.

Both Feast of Ashes and Cup of Dust are wonderful spells for making some poor NPC’s life absolutely miserable. Both of them can last for weeks at higher levels and will keep the poor fool at the edge of unconsciousness the entire time, up until something deals the final point of nonlethal damage needed to knock them out and allow the supernatural starvation or dehydration to finally have a lethal effect on them.

They’re amazing roleplaying tools that are more or less worthless in combat, unless the enemy in question manages to escape the party’s clutches and become a recurring nuisance. Ray of Enfeeblement isn’t fantastic at higher levels... Unless you target enemy casters, notorious for both their low Fortitude saves and their low Strength scores. A lucky shot may shave 11 Str off your target, potentially rendering weaker enemies completely helpless for 1 round/level. Even shooting someone with a high Fort save might still shave 2 or 3 damage off their attacks for a couple rounds, which can save your life.

I’d say go with the two curses if you plan to muck with some poor NPC (or uppity PC), and Ray of Enfeeblement if you don’t know what the day holds.

Boon 2: Unending Hunger. Once per day as a standard action, you may consume any nonliving substance with no ill effects. It must be no larger than your own size category, but only takes 1 round regardless of its size. Bodies consumed by this ability are completely destroyed. Any object you consume can attempt a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 your hit dice + your Con modifier) to avoid being destroyed.

God. Alright, I’ve gone over this ability with some disbelief in me before, but to reiterate: This ability ignores hardness, damage reduction, and the Artifact status, allowing you to destroy even divine artifacts in a single standard action if they fail their save. You can eat containers, and everything inside of them, in one action; so you can shove your enemy into a Bag of Holding and eat it to destroy them. You can use size-changing effects to let yourself snarf up larger and larger objects, or shrink other objects to have a better chance of eating them.

Also note that it doesn’t say the item has to be unattended. Snatch your enemy’s sword right out of their hands and eat it. Eat their armor right off of their body. If they’re a Construct or an Undead being, you can even eat them. If you’re the type to argue over semantics, you could note that only “an object” receives a saving throw, so a Construct or an Undead creature is instantly killed and destroyed with no save! But that interpretation would likely get you slapped by your DM.

This ability in general might get you slapped by your DM, in fact. It’s very, very obvious to me that this ability wasn’t run through much testing, or else it’d be much longer and clarify things like: Can you actually eat enemies that are nonliving? Can you eat only portions of larger objects? What happens when you eat an Artifact? What happens when the item makes its save--is it still inside you? Jammed in your mouth? Does it take damage? There’s so many questions that aren’t answered! If you actually gain this ability at any point, talk with your DM about the finer points. Don’t just suddenly surprise them by eating the Doom Artifact their campaign was built around.

Boon 3: Withering Invocation. You may cast Implosion 1/day as a spell-like ability.

This ability is much simpler than the last one. It’s also pretty strong! Provided you’re the proper prestige class, Implosion will deal a flat 160 damage to 8 different targets over the course of 8 rounds, and that damage and duration will only rise each level. Implosion is best used to selectively dispose of enemy minions rather than the main boss, though a successful Fortitude save negates the damage completely, and you can only target one particular being once with each casting of the spell. Even so, it’s likely to hew out (or grievously cripple) lower-level enemies, even though it’s rather slow in doing so.

Not the best level 9 spell available, but there’s no cap on how high it can scale up, so if your character manages to head into 20+ levels it just becomes more and more devastating to fail a throw to. There’s also the fact that it works on everything--Constructs, Undead, Elementals, etc--so long as it has a physical body, which makes it a good no matter what you may end up facing.

SENTINEL

Boon 1: Famine’s Crusader. Gain Mount 3/day, Wartrain Mount 2/day, or Phantom Steed 1/day

Mount and Phantom Steed are, essentially, the same spell, except Phantom Steed is bigger, fancier, and way more mobile. However, Phantom Steed can only carry one to three people at a time, while Mount can be used in succession to conjure a trio of horses for the entire party. It really depends on if your party needs to get somewhere quickly, or if you, personally, need to get somewhere.

Both are handy out of combat spells, and whichever one you pick is generally going to be based on how many people are traveling and how far they’re going, though Mount is usually the better choice unless you’re traveling through tough terrain. In a pinch, Mount can also be used in combat; ponies aren’t exactly known for being incredible combatants, but it’s an extra body on the field and an extra distraction for monsters too dim-witted to know how to focus targets. I’m not really even going to talk about Wartrain Mount; it’s a VERY niche spell, and not even a particularly good niche spell.

Boon 2: Consumptive Aura. You no longer require food to survive, though you still feel the pain of hunger to allow you to fulfill your Obedience. In addition, As a swift action, you may project a 20ft aura of starvation. It can be maintained or ended as a free action from there on out; you may maintain this effect for a number of rounds per day equal to your hit dice. Each round a creature begins their turn within this aura, it must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 your hit dice + your Cha modifier) or take 1d6 points of nonlethal damage and be fatigued from extreme hunger. They do not become exhausted if they’re already fatigued. Creatures that do not need to eat are immune to this ability.

I do like that they added the clause that you still feel hunger pains despite not having to eat. That’s a good way to make an unfortunate, trapped servant go insane. Then again, that’s what Trial Marxist probably wants! It’s also basically there for flavor reasons and has little mechanical benefit; the Boon falls off if you don’t perform your Obedience, and to perform your Obedience you have to eat. Then again, this does basically mean that you can fill up on leaf piles or handfuls of sand while the rest of the party eats your rations.

Anyway, this ability is pretty good. 1d6 nonlethal damage each round isn’t going to win you a fight by any stretch, but being able to fatigue everyone around you will. There is the unfortunate downside in that you don’t get to pick and choose who gets affected by this ability, so granting any allies you may have some immunity to fatigue is probably one of your first priorities. Unless you don’t have allies, in which case, starve away!

I can see a few uses for this ability outside of combat. For example, marching into a crowded town square and then activating it, knocking out the weaker citizens and making the burlier ones absolutely famished. If you have a means to cause madness or confusion in people, even better! You can drive a dozen people to attack one another in a horrible, gruesome fashion!

Hey, you are representing one of the omnicidal Four Horsemen. Start finding horrifying uses for your powers!

Boon 3: Eruptive Arrival. Once per day, you may teleport through any creature you can see (as Greater Teleport; so long as you can see the target, the distance or obstacles between you do not matter). You burst forth from the victim’s body in a shower of blood and gore and appear in a space adjacent to them, dealing 20d6 damage to the victim and 5d6 damage to all other creatures within 10ft of your arrival, nauseating everyone damaged for 1d4 rounds. Any creature damaged by this ability can make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 your hit dice + your Con modifier) to halve the damage and negate the nausea.

Speaking of horrifying uses, Jesus Christ.

Note that this ability actually allows you to explode out of anyone you may even be scrying on, crossing planetary distances to burst forth from your unfortunate victim, likely killing them and most of the lower-level folk around them. It’s an amazing initiator, crossing huge rooms or distances to get up close and personal to your enemy (really up close and personal) while simultaneously dealing a huge chunk of damage. You even get to make a move action after since Greater Teleport is only a standard action! AND you get to make a swift action, too, like raising your Consumptive Aura!

20d6 is an enormous amount of damage, even if it gets halved by a successful save, and your poor target has no actual way to dodge it or stop you from using them as a screaming doorway aside from keeping out of your line of sight. I think the fact that it works through binoculars, spyglasses, and scrying is the real kicker. Who needs to sneak into an enemy castle? Just peep at one of the patrolling guards from a mile or so away and make them explode.

You may be stuck in hot water while the rest of your team catches up, but I think appearing before your foes by bursting out of one of their allies should give you a few circumstance bonuses to any Intimidate check you make on arrival.

Isaac Blesses Jacob

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son”; and he answered, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. 3 Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me, 4 and prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”

5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, 6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, 7 ‘Bring me game and prepare for me delicious food, that I may eat it and bless you before the LORD before I die.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice as I command you. 9 Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats, so that I may prepare from them delicious food for your father, such as he loves. 10 And you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.” 11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.” 13 His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.”

14 So he went and took them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared delicious food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 And she put the delicious food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 So he went in to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.” 20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He answered, “Because the LORD your God granted me success.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him. 24 He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He answered, “I am.” 25 Then he said, “Bring it near to me, that I may eat of my son’s game and bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came near and kissed him. And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him and said,

  “See, the smell of my son     is as the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed! 28   May God give you of the dew of heaven     and of the fatness of the earth     and plenty of grain and wine. 29   Let peoples serve you,     and nations bow down to you.   Be lord over your brothers,     and may your mother’s sons bow down to you.   Cursed be everyone who curses you,     and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that you may bless me.” 32 His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” 34 As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” 35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” 36 Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob?Jacob means He takes by the heel, or He cheats‘>1 For he has cheated me these two times. He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37 Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” 38 Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

39 Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:

  “Behold, away fromOr Behold, of‘>2 the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be,     and away fromOr and of‘>3 the dew of heaven on high. 40   By your sword you shall live,     and you shall serve your brother;   but when you grow restless     you shall break his yoke from your neck.”

41 Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran 44 and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away—45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I loathe my life because of the Hittite women.Hebrew daughters of Heth‘>4 If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women like these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

8 When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leperLeprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13‘>1 came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 3 And JesusGreek he‘>2 stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”

The Faith of a Centurion

5 When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, 6 “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” 7 And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant,Or bondservant‘>3 ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in IsraelSome manuscripts not even in Israel‘>4 have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Jesus Heals Many

14 And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons

28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes,Some manuscripts Gergesenes; some Gerasenes‘>5 two demon-possessedGreek daimonizomai (demonized); also verse 33; elsewhere rendered oppressed by demons‘>6 men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

9 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. 2 And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” 4 But Jesus, knowingSome manuscripts perceiving‘>7 their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

“We don’t get much work done here, if we’re being honest. Why are we together?” –brielle

The Joe and the Juice on Broadway is the site of many moments like this, where my writer friend Brielle and I attempt to be productive and inevitably fail. Why? On one hand, it’s the fact that our friendship is fueled by terrible memes and lots--I mean lots--of caffeine. But on the other, the fact that we are the least adventurous creatives on the planet.

We get coffee a lot, but 98% of the time, it’s at the same place. (The other 2% is at Starbucks, when Joe and the Juice is closed. But that basically doesn’t count.)

It’s funny, because I remember promising to myself, when I first came to school in New York City, that I would “explore every weekend” and “take advantage of the city.” The only problem is that I’m a broke college student who has too much work and not enough time.

So why not multitask? Why not use the coffeeshops that Brielle and I haunt as an excuse to get out, to explore? (The answer: because it takes time and money, and we’re lazy and like Joe and the Juice. But no more!) So here begins a story about coffee, fiction, and the crazy friendship that somehow connects the two.

This week, we’re starting at the place where it all began: Joe and the Juice (on Broadway.)

We took more than three hours to decide on our criteria for judging the coffeeshops we visit, and in line with our name (Caffeinated Creatives), we have stuck to a cheesy but memorable set of “C”s:

Here we go:

The “joe” part of Joe and the Juice comes first for a reason: it’s delicious. Smooth espresso ground, tamped, pulled, and poured right in front of you. Never burnt, always strong. I’ve never been disappointed with my usual Pink Latte (pink=large!)

Unfortunately, there’s room for more coffee/espresso options. If you’re not happy with a latte or drip coffee, you’ll be happier elsewhere! They do, however, offer iced versions of nearly all the coffee drinks. If your taste for caffeine runs in the direction of tea, you’ll have even more limited options--and this blog probably isn’t the one for you!

The “juice” part takes up the majority of the menu on the wall, but isn’t my favorite. But I’m no juice aficionado. The juice is also much more expensive!

Which brings us to the most unnecessarily expensive thing here: the sandwiches. Sure, they’re “healthy” but they’re small, usually half cold, and still about $10. We don’t usually get any of the food here. (There’s a Pret, Chipotle, McDonalds, Wendy’s, and all of Turnstyle Market at Columbus Circle nearby.)

Here’s a shocker: Joe and the Juice is not cheap. A Pink Latte is $4.40, a large juice is $8.80, and the sandwiches are even more. My defense comes in two parts:

I stay here for hours at a time on a single Pink Latte

I have a loyalty card (see pic!) that brings down the cost of a Pink Latte to about $3.95

The loyalty cards are awesome. The yellow latte loyalty card costs $39.85 and gets you 10 coffee drinks of your choice. They don’t expire, and mine usually lasts me about three weeks--less during finals!! 

You can also get loyalty cards for juices and sandwiches, although these two are, unsurprisingly, more expensive. But if you use them wisely, they do help save some $$$

The strongest point of each and every Joe and the Juice is the ambiance. Bright with sunlight. Modern, Scandi decor. Lots of art. Greenery. Very loud, thumping music. Constant chatter. If you’ve ever wanted a coffee shop that felt like a daytime nightclub, here’s the one for you.

Sometimes it’s as much a curse as a blessing--especially if you ever have to take a phone call!--but on the whole, the character of this place keeps me coming back more than anything. Anywhere can have good coffee. But not everywhere can be somewhere I willingly want to be for 5+ hours at a time!

It feels warm here, even in the dead of New York winter. (And I’m not just talking about temperature!)

Wifi? Free.

Outlets? Plenty.

Cell service? Strong.

What else could you ever want? This is how I come and stay forever. Computer dies? No problem. Online research? Done. Mom calls? Answered: “No, Mother, I’m not in a club. Just Joe and the Juice.”

To reserve some modicum of privacy, we’ll be considering the middle of Columbus Circle our “home.” As such, Joe and the Juice is a very convenient 3 minute walk away! Their hours are 7am-8pm on weekdays and 8-8 on weekends, and I’m usually there until closing. I wish they stayed open until 9 (or even later), but I suppose late-night coffee is what Starbucks exists for.

Conclusion: (this isn’t one of our Cs, but it might as well be)

Joe and the Juice on Broadway is definitely my go-to “third space” for working, writing, and procrastinating. I love the folks working the bar (they know my name and order!). It’s easy and comfortable, and I kinda feel like I’m cheating on them as I begin to take on this project of exploration. 

But never fear, Joe, I’ve got at least six more drinks on my loyalty card. I’ll be back.

ENJOLRAS — ENGAGED.

As far as headlines went, it wasn’t particularly original, and Enjolras, who was still trying to adjust to the fact that, after being treated like a freak for as long as he could remember, everyone seemed to suddenly care about every detail of his life, scoffed as he chucked the newspaper onto a table at the Musain. “You’d think there wasn’t anything else going on in the world that matters,” he said, sinking into a chair and feeling suddenly exhausted.

“Well, it’s not every day that our very own pig-faced hero gets engaged to the son of a baron,” Combeferre pointed out reasonably, passing a cup of coffee over to Enjolras, who accepted it with a grateful smile. “Besides, all this publicity is great. The second or third line of every article has mentioned Les Amis.”

“Yeah, right after they mention my pig snout abnormality,” Enjolras grumbled.

“If it makes you feel better, people have started dogging my footsteps now, too,” the freckled man sitting next to Combeferre offered, with a tentative smile. “Though of course, they’re mostly trying to figure out if I’m just after your money. Or what my sexuality is. Or why I had a temporary restraining order placed against me, which was a complete misunderstanding, I promise.”

Courfeyrac patted his hand. “Marius, m’dear,” he said gently, “shut up.”

As Marius sulked slightly, Combeferre produced a set of legal documents, which he laid in front of Enjolras and Marius. “These are the pre-nuptial agreements, per your terms, written out by Bahorel, who only agreed to break his hiatus from the law because he — and this is a direct quote — loves you fucking fools, hashtag bless.”

Enjolras flipped through the document. “Everything seems in order on my end,” he said. “Marius agrees that he has no claim over any of the Tholomyès inheritance, property, name, etcetera, etcetera, and in return, I will grant him a divorce or annulment within 36 hours of receiving of receiving said Tholomyès inheritance, and I…” He paused, squinting at the document. “And I write a letter of recommendation to the woman that he loves?” He glanced up, bemused. “What is this?”

“A late addition,” Marius said brightly. “I hope you don’t mind. I just think that a letter from you explaining everything would go over well.”

Courfeyrac propped his chin on his hand. “Now, will you be giving her this letter before or after you actually introduce yourself?” Marius turned red and looked away, muttering incoherent excuses to himself. “But that should have everything covered, right?”

Enjolras shrugged. “Works for me.” He hastily scrawled his signature on the indicated lines and passed the document back to Combeferre, not quite meeting his eyes. “Well, if that’s everything, I’ve got things to do.” He pushed his chair back from the table and stood. “And Marius, I’ll, uh, I’ll see you at the altar. I guess.”

With that, he was gone, leaving Courfeyrac, Marius and Combeferre staring after him. “I should go, too,” Combeferre said abruptly, also standing.

“Where have you got to go?” Courfeyrac demanded.

Combeferre just smiled tightly at him. “Wedding preparations. I’ll see you both later.”

And with that, he was gone, too. “So, just you and me, Pontmercy,” Courfeyrac said, fluttering his eyelashes at Marius. “Just like old times.”

Marius turned beet red. “Actually,” he muttered, “I also have to go.”

“How am I the only one who doesn’t have any plans?” Courfeyrac demanded. Marius just shrugged meekly and left, and Courfeyrac pouted for about five seconds before making his way over to two very pretty brunettes at the bar. “Enchanté,” he said with his most winning smile. “My friends all seem to have abandoned me. Perhaps you both would be willing to keep me company?”

The girls looked at each other and giggled, and Courfeyrac grinned, his abandonment entirely forgotten.

Combeferre didn’t bother knocking on Grantaire’s door, instead letting himself in and leaning against the doorjamb, watching Grantaire paint. After a long moment, and without looking away from his canvas, Grantaire asked, “Can I help you?”

“Have you seen this?” Combeferre asked in lieu of answering, strolling over and tossing that day’s newspaper onto Grantaire’s stool, its headline prominently displayed.

Grantaire barely glanced at the headline and accompanying image of Enjolras and Marius before looking back at the canvas, only the tightening of his grip on his paintbrush giving him away. “Hmm, cute couple,” Grantaire murmured.

Combeferre shook his head. “That’s all you have to say? Really?”

Now Grantaire glanced sideways at him, a muscle working in his jaw. “What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to tell me the truth,” Combeferre said steadily. “There was only one person who didn’t run away from Enjolras, and it doesn’t take a genius to gather from everything he’s told me that this person was you. So you can’t tell me that this isn’t killing you.”

“Why would it kill me?” Grantaire asked, slamming his paintbrush down. “He’s getting everything he wants, the day he’s waited for all his life. Breaking this stupid fucking curse.”

Combeferre rolled his eyes. “You don’t actually believe that, do you?”

Grantaire raised an eyebrow at him. “You don’t?” He snorted and shook his head. “It’s an odd day when our roles are reversed: you, the cynic, and me, the believer.” He shrugged and looked away. “But I guess when you spend enough time down a bottle with only your demons for company, it’s a lot easier to believe in curses.”

Combeferre had no response to that, so he simply shook his head and told Grantaire softly, “It’s not too late to stop the wedding.”

“It’s what he wants,” Grantaire said, equally quiet, though the pain was obvious across his face.

“But it doesn’t have to be!” Combeferre said heatedly. “Look, if all it takes it getting married to break this ‘curse’, why not have it be you?”

Grantaire just shook his head sadly. “Because the curse can only be broken by ‘one of their own’,” he quoted. “And you forget — I’m no blue blood.” He looked back at Combeferre, his expression resigned. “It’s what he wants,” he repeated. “And I want nothing more than to give Enjolras everything that he wants. And the only way that I can do that is by doing nothing.”

Enjolras stood nervously in front of the mirror, adjusting his cufflinks and trying to ignore his mother, who was sobbing into a handkerchief. “I’m just so happy,” she blubbered, accepting another handkerchief from Matelote, who patted her shoulder with a clear look of revulsion on her face.

“Well, at least that makes one of us,” Enjolras muttered, abandoning his cufflinks and attempting to do something about his bowtie, which was choking him. “I look like an idiot.”

“You do not,” his mother told him, wiping her eyes carefully so as to not smear her makeup. “You look…” Her eyes flickered to Enjolras’s snout and away again. “You look as perfect as you can,” she pronounced. “And in only an hour’s time, you’ll look as perfect as this day is. And everything we will have worked for will finally, finally…”

It was all too much for her, and she dissolved into tears again.

Matelote looked just plain embarrassed as her employer sobbed into her dress. “At least it’s a beautiful fall day,” she offered. “A week before Halloween, and the weather couldn’t be nicer. Perfect. And your colors — red and black — they go so nicely with the foliage.”

“Well, at least that means the important things are taken care of,” Enjolras muttered, as the band struck up a march.

“Oh, goodness, it’s time!” his mother exclaimed. “Come on, are you ready to finally get married?”

“No,” Enjolras said honestly, offering his arm to his mother. “But let’s do this anyway.”

The justice’s voice was shaky and could barely be heard above the hundreds of onlookers, 98% of whom Enjolras didn’t know and didn’t particularly care to know. “Do you, Marius Pontmercy, take Enjolras Tholomyès to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish from this day forward, until death do you part?”

Marius shot a nervous look at a pretty blonde girl sitting in the third row before forcing a smile on his face and turning back to Enjolras. “I do,” he said, more confidently than he looked.

The justice turned his gaze to Enjolras, who could barely stand still, his hands in Marius’s sweaty. “And do you, Enjolras Tholomyès, take Marius Pontmercy to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish from this day forward, until death do you part?”

Enjolras opened his mouth to say ‘yes’ and was as surprised as anyone when he instead said, “No.”

Marius stared at him. “No?” he repeated.

“No,” Enjolras confirmed, pulling his hands away from Marius’s. “I’m so sorry, Marius, but I...I can’t.”

With that, he turned and fled back inside. The crowd broke into nervous whispers as Enjolras’s mother stood, looking around wildly. “Nobody move! He’s fine!” she shrieked, running after her son. “Enjolras, wait! Enjolras! Stop!”

She caught up with Enjolras just as he got inside and grabbed his arm. “What do you think you are doing?” she hissed. “Get back out there and marry him!”

Enjolras shook her off. “I can’t, Mother,” he said, his voice quiet but determined. “I’m sorry, but—”

“What do you mean, you can’t?” she shrieked, her voice shrill. “You are getting married, Enjolras, or else!”

“Or else what?” Enjolras challenged, turning on her, his eyes flashing. “What can you do to me that hasn’t already been done?” His mother shook her head, her eyes darting around the room, and Enjolras shook his head. “Look at me,” Enjolras commanded.

Her eyes narrowed. “I am. What is it?”

Enjolras shook his head. “No, look at me,” he said, and when his mother still refused to look him in the eyes, he grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her. “Look at me! For once in your life, look me in the eyes and acknowledge that I am your son, just the way I am!”

“That’s enough of that,” his mother snapped. “Enjolras, you need to think about what you’re doing. This is the moment we’ve worked so hard for!”

Shaking his head again, Enjolras let go of his mother and turned away. “Go away,” he said softly, but she ignored him, grabbing the sleeve of his tuxedo and tugging insistently on it.

“Sweetheart, listen — we are just a single ‘yes’ away from a whole new life! A whole new you! Don’t throw it all away!”

Enjolras whirled around. “Don’t you understand?” he shouted. “I don’t want a whole new me. This whole stupid thing—” He gestured wildly towards the where the wedding guests waited. “—It’s only because I want my inheritance. I could care less if I break this stupid curse or if I’m stuck with this pig snout for the rest of my life! I can do — and I have done — amazing things, pig snout or no pig snout!”

His mother shook her head. “But think about how much more good you can do with a pretty face to match—” she started, but Enjolras cut her off.

“I don’t give a damn!” he told her. “I like my face just the way it is. In fact, it’s only taken me this long to realize it, but I fucking love myself the way I am! And until the day I die, I always will!”

Without warning, Enjolras’s entire form seemed covered in golden light. His mom shrieked again and covered her eyes as the light grew brighter. Then, as quickly as it had arrived, the light disappeared, revealing a very confused-looking Enjolras, with a normal human nose. “Oh my god!” his mother said, staring at him with wide eyes. “I don’t...I don’t understand…”

Enjolras felt his nose carefully, a sudden smile breaking out on his face. “Don’t you?” he asked. “I’m a blue blood, and I just promised to love myself until death. I broke the curse.”

Combeferre ran inside, out of breath. “Enjolras, there’s something I have to tell…” He trailed off, his eyes widening at the sight of Enjolras. “Your nose!”

“Yeah, curse broken, old news now,” Enjolras said dismissively, though he was grinning. “What do you have to tell me?”

Combeferre just shook his head. “I was going over your great, great grandfather’s will for a bit of light reading during the ceremony, and you need to read this.”

He shoved a photocopied version of the will into Enjolras’s hand, and Enjolras scanned it, unsure of what he was looking for. “What?” he asked. “I don’t see anything.”

“Don’t you?” Combeferre asked, a note of triumph in his voice. “See — there. It doesn’t say that the next firstborn Tholomyès male will inherit when he gets married, it says he’ll inherit on the day of his wedding.”

Enjolras just stared at him. “So what?” he asked.

Combeferre grinned. “So today was the day of your wedding. The will doesn’t say a damn thing about you having to go through with it.”

Enjolras’s eyes widened. “You mean…”

“I do,” Combeferre said, his grin widening. “Congratulations. You’re now a very rich man. With a very normal nose. And I’d say you can go let Pontmercy down easily, but he’s already left with some blonde girl.” His expression suddenly turned serious. “And you know what this means?”

“Yeah, I can start all the grant programs I want and start giving all the Tholomyès money away,” Enjolras said eagerly, and both he and Combeferre ignored his mother promptly fainting in the background.

Combeferre sighed. “Yes, of course, but more importantly…” He hesitated. “More importantly, there’s something you should know about Grantaire.”

Courfeyrac linked his arm through Enjolras’s, pulling him through the hallways of the apartment building. Almost all the apartment doors were open and people were mingling and drinking as music raged. “You’re everywhere,” Courfeyrac muttered, grinning, as they passed the seventh person they’d seen wearing a pig mask that Halloween, clearly dressed up like how Enjolras used to look. “Are you freaking out or what?”

Enjolras shook his head. “I mean, yeah, but not from that,” he said, adjusting his own pig mask as they approached one of the only doors that wasn’t open. “Ok, there we are. Apartment 1832.” He took a deep, shuddering breath and went to knock on the door.

“Hold on,” Courfeyrac said, and Enjolras turned, frowning at him. “Sorry, it’s just...It’s kind of great to see the old you.”

Though Courfeyrac couldn’t see it behind the mask, Enjolras rolled his eyes and turned back to the door, taking another deep breath before knocking.

After a moment so long that Enjolras had time to run through every worst case scenario in his head, Grantaire opened the door, looking warily at the pair. “Hey, Courf, what’s up?” he asked.

“This is my friend,” Courfeyrac said brightly, shoving Enjolras forward. “He’s gotta pee. Let him use your bathroom?” He leaned in and kissed Grantaire’s cheek. “There’s a darling. I’m off to get more punch.” He winked at Grantaire and vanished back into the party.

Grantaire looked at Enjolras without smiling. “I guess it’s ok,” he said reluctantly, stepping back and holding the door open. “Come on in.”

Enjolras cautiously stepped into Grantaire’s apartment, heading toward the bathroom in the direction Grantaire gestured to buy himself some time. “It looks like a good party,” he called, a little lamely. “Why aren’t you out there having fun?”

“I’ve got to pack,” Grantaire said, and Enjolras peeked out of the bathroom, surprised to see a suitcase open on Grantaire’s bed.

“Oh, are you moving?” Enjolras asked innocently.

Grantaire shrugged, tossing a balled-up shirt into the suitcase with perhaps more force than necessary. “Yeah, I’ve got an out-of-town job. I just…” He shook his head. “I needed to get out of the city for awhile.”

Enjolras slowly came out of the bathroom. “Away from the crowds?” he asked, edging towards the door.

Snorting, Grantaire sat down on his bed. “Yeah, the crowds at the bars,” he muttered.

“Oh, so you’re an drinker?” Enjolras asked.

Grantaire shrugged. “Trying to cut back. I’ve been told that stuff will kill you, so I’m trying to, you know, avoid temptation. In more ways than one.”

“Right,” Enjolras said, swinging his arms awkwardly, not sure what he was supposed to say to that. “Well that’s good. I, uh, I had a friend once who really liked to drink. At least, well, I’ve been told he liked to drink. And he had to stay away from—”

“Take off the mask,” Grantaire said suddenly, and Enjolras froze, staring at him. Grantaire shook his head, his shoulders slumping. “I’m sorry, it’s just...all Halloween, I’ve been running into...well, somebody that I used to know.” He ran a tired hand across his face and forced a smile. “Sorry. Being ridiculous.”

Enjolras swallowed and asked in an attempt at a light and airy voice, “This someone, did he mean a lot to you?”

Grantaire shrugged. “Yeah,” he said softly. “Yeah, he did.”

“So what happened?”

“I couldn’t give him what he wanted,” Grantaire said.

The stark honesty in his voice cut Enjolras to the core, and it took him a moment before he was able to ask, his voice soft and strange-sounding to his own ears, “What did he want?”

Grantaire shrugged again, his eyes staring at something far away. “To be free.”

Enjolras was about to respond when he noticed for the first time the half-finished canvas in the corner. “You lied to me!” he exclaimed, stalking towards the canvas. “I guessed that you were a painter, and you—”

Without warning, Grantaire stood and grabbed Enjolras, pulling him into a deep, fierce kiss, one hand cupping Enjolras’s cheek while the other wrapped possessively around Enjolras’s waist. Enjolras kissed him back, a desperate, hungry edge to his kiss.

When they broke apart, Grantaire rested his forehead against Enjolras. “Enjolras, I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I know,” Enjolras murmured, because he did know, more than he could ever explain.

Grantaire shook his head, his tone turning urgent. “No, you don’t understand — I don’t have the power to break the curse. That’s why…”

He trailed off, and it was Enjolras’s turn to shake his head. “It’s ok,” he said softly, reaching up to take his mask off. “It turns out that I did.” Grantaire just stared at him for a moment, and Enjolras bit his lip. “Grantaire, it’s still me.”

“Of course it is,” Grantaire said instantly. “I just…” He reached up to touch Enjolras’s face gently. “You always were beautiful. And I’m a little jealous that everyone’s going to be able to see what I always have.”

Enjolras kissed Grantaire then, and Grantaire’s lips curved against his into a smile, his fist balling in Enjolras’s shirt as if he would never let go.

So with the curse broken and the inheritance received, they had nothing left to do but to live happily ever after. And they did. Or at least, happily ever after so far.
