Speaking of which, on the off chance that there are any other people writing Pentiment fic that could use some help researching early modern medicine, including melancholia and perceptions of mental health, please do hit me up. History of science is a part of my degree and a special interest of mine and I have been doing a lot of reading on the topic even outside of my current primary source research in my university's historical medical library (where we have a number of 16th century German medical texts).
I think I'm going to put together a general source list of more accessible readings and digitized primary sources available online if I have the time, but especially if you're interested in information from one of the books in the library -- or if you have a very specific question -- send me and ask or a message and I'll see if I can help!
#actually this offer stands for anyone interested; not just people writing pentiment fic#but considering i want there to be more pentiment fic and there are several major characters with significant medical knowledge#(andreas included if you pick the right background!)#it's of course what first came to mind#might even be able to ask the librarians to pull some more books for me i think they like me (i worked there last semester)#but also i already have a lot of lore#pentiment tag

Yeah that lol
ok so, for this to make sense you need some background info
people involved:
me (noëmi)
my bf (raaf)
my bsf (roni)
fwb dude but not really (andreas)
an acquaintance (job)
see, at the time when this happened, everyone except for me worked at a hardware store. when roni started working there, we started a ritual of sorts. i would come pick her up every saturday from work. id pick them up, and raaf and andreas would be there on saturdays, so we slowly got to know each other. roni befriended them first, but where roni goes i follow (kinda hard not to when her parents literally took me in after i ran away from home and we share a room, but i digress).
so after roni befriended raaf and andreas, i started spending time with them too. now, roni and raaf kinda had a phase where they had everyone including themselves questioning whether or not they would become a couple. made me feel like a massive third wheel anytime i was near them, but i was unwell at the time... aka do not leave unsupervised for fear of their own thoughts and what might come of them.
and thus i started spending more time with andreas, cue this man asking me if he can kiss me the first night we hang out just the two of us and im just sitting there like the confused lil aroace that i am. like i was out to the guy, and he still asked me???? i deadass asked if he was joking, turns out he wasn’t. and one night (read: the next) we slept over at raafs and apparently in the middle of the night i turned over and i was too close to andreas' for his sleep fogged brain to handle so he kissed me...and that's how the two longest, most tiring and confusing months of my life began. turns out andreas is king of mixed signals and miscommunication, to the point where everyone that i asked a second opinion for got frustrated and annoyed and confused themselves :)
then one night before raaf leaves on holiday, we were all gonna hang out after mine and roni's shift at the restaurant (oh yeah roni is a fuckin workaholic and has multiple jobs, and another important detail that i forgot is that all 3 of them were quitting the hardware store). raaf was picking us up, but right as he walked in i noticed that my phone was not where i left it :)))) can you guess where this is going? if you guessed my phone got stolen at work then you are right...congratulations
#🎶 anon#noëmi answers#im so fucking tired of typing im not even halfway through#time for a break#aka a 5hr nap#my alarm goes off in 5hrs whyyy#bc i need to get on a bus thats why#i shall continue this shortly

Guardian Angel - Part 5
Daryl Dixon x Reader
(Warnings: the reader goes off on Jenner, so get ready for that XD also time skips again)
You giggled as Glenn groaned at his headache “that’s what you get for drinking so much” you remarked, getting a glare from him that only served to amuse you further. Glenn scoffed at your amusement “it was Daryl who-” you hummed low as you interrupted him “I know, but you’re an adult, you can say no” Glenn groaned again at your response, holding his head in pain. You smiled to yourself as you felt Daryl’s hand on your thigh under the table, and you found Lori’s eyes, smiling at you, but something was wrong, you could see it, you were about to gesture her to leave the table with you when Shane arrived, and instantly her face dropped and you knew something had happened between them.
You tried not to mind as you continued to eat your scrambled eggs, but your eyes kept going to Lori, who gave you a very subtle shake of her head, telling you to leave it, so you couldn’t argue with that, she didn’t want to talk about it, at least not now, so you respected that, and continued to eat your eggs as you enjoyed the feeling of Daryl’s hand on your thigh, a warming reminder of last night, which you could still feel in the rest of your body, a tingly feeling was left between your legs, and judging by the hand that stayed on your thigh, it wasn’t just a one time thing for him either, as he said, he doesn’t just take anyone with him on hunts.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You stared with wide eyes at Jenner, the noises of the others, Daryl included, trying to break down the security door was like static from an old radio, just there in the background, and without thinking your fist landed in Jenner’s face, something that surprised everyone, “how DARE you! You’d murder these kids?! So what if it’s shit out there and your wife died! Who are you to decide and play God?! You’re commiting murder right now, and so what if the world has gone to hell and that doesn’t matter anymore, so what if we die but you’re willing to kill the kids!? They haven’t even had a chance at life you asshole! They’re children they deserve a chance that’s what children are for, a second chance at this fucked up world! It was shit before the dead started to walk and that ain’t ever gonna change but you can’t just take their possibilities away from them! It’s their lives, and who knows if they’ll grow up to fix all this shit!!” Rick had to hold you back as you screamed at Jenner, who still held his cheek in shock, your body flailing and kicking “let me get him Rick!! He’s trying to kill us and the kids, YOUR kid!” you screamed again, this time feeling a second pair of arms, Glenn, holding you back, and you finally took a step back, still ready to mop the floor with his ass but you held back, realizing that kids shouldn’t see that, even now.
You were so lost in your rage that you hadn’t even realized that Rick had talked to him, and the security door opened, it as first when you heard your name that you turned and saw the door open, seeing Daryl standing there, waiting for you, a fire axe in hand and Glenn tugging at your hand to run. Your feet moved quicker than you thought possible, bolting towards the exit and reaching Daryl, his hand on your lower back as you both bolted towards the exits, but once again, you were trapped. You picked up a chair and joined the others in trying to break a window, slamming it against the glass and even trying with your own body, but nothing worked, it was only when Daryl tackled you and pulled you away from the window that a grenade did the job, Daryl straight up dragging you to your feet and back out the window, groaned as you landed on the grass outside but you didn’t have time to think or react, your feet picking up the pace once again and carrying you to the vehicles, Daryl right behind you as you hid behind a wall of bags of sand, your eyes scanning the group, only to come up with a few missing. You watched in horror as Andrea and Dale barely made it out of there, you quickly got up and ran over to them, helping them get up and run back to the cars just in time for the building to explode, the force of it making you trip and fall, scraping your knee and hurting your ankle even further.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You held onto Daryl tightly as you pulled up on the highway, your way being blocked by, probably, thousands of cars, abandoned and dusty, like they left in a hurry, whoever owned them. You winced as you got off of the bike and instantly Daryl got off as well, frowning and studying your knee and how you took the pressure off of your injured ankle. You were about to tell him to leave it when you heard your name being called, turning to see Lori waving you over, you smiled gently at Daryl, giving his hand a squeeze as you carefully made your way over to Lori, smiling at her as you finally reached her “what’s up?” you leaned against one of the cars and she smirked at you “so, am I allowed to sing that song yet or…?” you scoffed and rolled your eyes “you can sing it all you want, just watch out of arrows that randomly fly your way” you joked, making her chuckle before noticing your knee “that looks like it hurts, are you okay?” she frowned, bending a bit down to get a closer look, but you stopped her, giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze “it’s fine, it’s just a scrape” she gave you a worried look, but ultimately gave up and sighed, leaning against the car alongside you, having her eyes on Carl, “so, how’d you get one?” you frowned as you looked confused at her “what?” you gave her a puzzled look but she just smirked and kept her eyes on Carl “our room was next to yours, apparently” your blushed bright red “oh my god…” you mumbled, burying your face in your hands, making her laugh, “so, how’d you get one?” you glanced up at her again, still confused “get what?” she smirked at you again and nudged your shoulder with hers “a condom” you grew even more red at that “oh uh, I didn’t…” you saw Lori stare at you in shock as you kept your eyes straight forward, looking at her out of the corner of your eyes “but you still-”
“Yeah but… like… he pulled out…” you mumbled, making Lori scoff “yeah so did Rick, nine months later I’m in the hospital with a son in my arms” you glanced at her with part horror, part shock in your eyes, making Lori just smirk again as she moved over to Carl, leaving you to your thoughts, were that woman trying to scare you into becoming a nun?! You glanced to Daryl who glanced back at you, giving you one of his rare, soft smiles that you completely loved. You smiled back and went over to him, but were cut off by Glenn who looked at you anxiously, glancing between you and Daryl “spit it out Glenn, come on” you gave him a reassuring smile but it only seemed to make him more nervous, making you realize that this was probably a tad more serious than you thought, so you moved behind a few cars, standing alone with him “what’s up?” he looked away embarrassed “I-I just uh… I heard you and Lori talking and uh…” you frowned, you knew he wouldn’t spy on you, at least not intentionally “yeah, so?” Glenn sighed like you made everything harder for him “I just-... you know I care about you a-and… I-I just heard and I… what if… what if you and him-... and you… and what about me if-... if it happens?... what am I supposed to do you're like-...” you sighed, you got what he was trying to say, at least you think so, you looked down before back up at Glenn, hugging him a tight hug “it’s okay, it’s not gonna happen, I’ll be okay” he nodded and carefully hugged you back, both of you unaware of a certain archer who had come to check on you as you got out of his view, hearing what you were talking about, a pissed off look on his face as he moved away. You parted from Glenn “if it happens don’t worry, you’ll be Uncle Glenn” you gave him a wink and he exhaled half nervous, half relieved, and it made you chuckle “yeah, sorry I just-”
“It’s alright Glenn, you know how much I care about you and you’re like a brother to me” Glenn nodded at your words before moving away, you moved your way towards Daryl yourself, smiling as you see him by his bike, like he was before. “Hey handsome” you were about to lean in to give him a kiss when he leaned away, making you frown, maybe he didn’t want to be public about it, or maybe he didn’t want you again… maybe it was just a one time thing for him… you looked down before back up at him, he still hadn’t looked at you “hey, is everything okay?” he scoffed almost immediately “I don’t know, why don’t you ask the chinese kid” you frowned even more, you were sure a few wrinkles would have etched their way into your skin by now “what do you mean, Glenn? He’s Korea-”
“Yeah whatever, go to him instead with all your bullshit” you tilted your head to try and get his eyes on you, but he just looked away even more, making you straight up pissed “the hell are you talking about, my ‘bullshit’ ?” you snapped, and finally he looked at you “I fuckin’ heard you, ‘you and him’ and all that!” you scoffed and shook your head “he overheard me talking with Lori, Lori was worried about what we did last night because we didn’t use protection, you asshole! He was just scared that something should happen to me, he’s like a brother to me! Prick...” Daryl’s face visibly softened at your words, and he was about to say something when you just scoffed and went off, trying to find Lori, you needed to cool off and she was pretty much the only one who could help you calm down when you were this riles up, plus you needed to talk to someone about Daryl, and since she already knew, it was ideal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You held your breath as you hid under a car, watching the shuffling feet walk by you, your whole body shaking as you had your knife out, just in case, but so far they were unaware of your presence, that is, until one stumbled and fell, landing with it’s face facing you, growling once it spotted you. You couldn’t risk quickly stabbing it to keep it quiet, there were still others passing by and it might alert them, plus you didn’t really have a lot of room to wiggle around in, for now it were content with just laying there, watching you as it grew more aggravated with each second passing, when feet stopped coming from behind you, you took the opportunity, carefully sliding out from under the car, the walker growling and getting up slowly, on it’s way to chase you down, and without seeing another option, you jumped over the railing and slided down the hill, quickly taking off as you heard the walker follow you, unless it broke both it’s legs, it was probably going to follow you to the ends of the earth, just to get a bite, a taste. You pant heavily as you continue running, your lungs burning, and once you’re far enough out you stop, leaning against a tree as you try to catch your breath as quietly as possible, though it wasn’t as easy as you had hoped, and you probably sounded more like a dog in the summer with thick fur, panting and heaving for breath as you tried to listen for footsteps.
After a few seconds you heard some shuffling, turning you saw now more than the one that had chased you, there were now four of them, slowly walking in your direction. You sighed and glanced at your ankle, it had just gotten better and now you had to run again, for the hundredth time without a brake or a possibility to see how bad the damage was. You leaned your head against the tree, closing your eyes and giving yourself a few seconds to gather up your courage before bolting once again, your knife in your hand and your ankle burning, you had no idea where you were headed, you just needed to get away from those walkers, four were too many for you to handle on your own.

EWTBATF Vlahd x Teen!reader Oneshot
(!NOTE: THIS IS NOT A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE READER AND VLAHD, THIS IS A FATHER DAUGHTER TYPE RELATIONSHIP!
Hello! I made this oneshot for people with daddy issues who used to simp for Vlahd but now want him to be your dad. The reader uses they/them pronouns because I want everyone to be able to feel included while reading this.
Vlahd and Eddsworld The Beginning and The Friend doesn't belong to me! It's a fancomic made by Makenzie Matthews, Jaculynn Kristiansen, Alyssa Grissom and Brittany Clark. Eddsworld belongs to Edd Gould. If I use any art in this oneshot I will credit the artist and give their socials.
P.s: If this is well received, I might make a story about this, so stay tuned~
P.p.s: I know this isn't Creepypasta content, but I felt like doing something a bit different.)
!DISCLAIMER! This oneshot deals with a lot of gore, mental, emotional, and physical abuse, fighting, missing body parts, and swearing! If you are sensitive to these topics, I advise you don't read this oneshot! Also, some spoilers for the fancomic EWTBOTF, so if you haven't read it or haven't been reading it for the past few months, I urge you to do so. Not just for this oneshot, but the comic is also pretty good!

Song: Tessellate - Alt J
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Three guns, and one goes off. Ones empty, ones not quick enough. One burn, one red, one grin. Search the graves while the camera spins."
The same thing happened every single day. You would wake up to screaming, try to shower and do your morning routine without being interrupted, spend the rest of the day your home trying not to get involved with your parent's marital issues, go to school, do chores, get screamed at for not doing something right, eat dinner, do homework, cry, then go to bed. This was your life since you were ten years old. Your biological father died when you were nine, then your mother got remarried a few months after your tenth birthday.
Your parents were very emotionally and mentally abusive. Sometimes they hit you, but would feign sorrow to try to make you feel safe around them. They continued this behavior for years, until you were thirteen. Apparently, your stepfather had gotten into some shady business with the infamous Red Leader. You had to move from your home country to England so your stepfather could work with the Red Leader. You were miserable, you had lost all of your friends you had in school. You had to go to a private boarding school, you never got picked on, but you found it hard to make friends. After a few moths, you finally got comfortable with your new surroundings.
One day though, that all changed for the worse. Your mom and stepfather got into a huge argument, apparently your mom was cheating on a man in the same army as your stepfather. He hit your mom, your mom left right after that. He then hit you really hard in the face, so hard that it left a mark. You burst into tears and ran to your room. You emptied out your book bag, and threw some clothes, hygienic products, your phone and charger, etc, into it. You quietly walked out of your room and out the front door while your dad wasn't looking. You walked down the streets of your neighborhood and out into the little town a few blocks away.
Popping your earbuds in, you listen to some music to try and calm yourself down. You walk around town for a about an hour before you passed a creepy alleyway. Unbeknownst to you, a man stepped out of that alleyway. He lightly tapped you on the shoulder. You stop dead in your tracks. You shakily turn around and take out your earbud to confront the man. A man with shaggy brown hair, an eyepatch, big eyebrows, and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth stood before you. Its Paul, your stepfather's mate!
Paul asked why you weren't at your house and offered to take you back. You explained what happened and Paul was shocked and disgusted with your stepfather's behavior. He took you back to the Red Army base and let you stay there. You agree and he takes you to the base. As soon as you get there, Paul took you to talk with Red Leader himself. Scared, you explain to the Red Leader what happened with your mom and stepdad. Red Leader let you stay on base on one condition. You have to serve in the Red Army when you turn sixteen. You agreed because you had nowhere else to go.
It's been five months since your sixteenth birthday. You have been integrated into the Red Army, and you have made a bunch of freinds on the base. It's not so bad working for the Red Army. You even have a father figure now. Even though you'd never tell him you consider him a father figure, in fear of him not being ready to be a dad and pushing you away. Sargent Major Vlahd has been training you since you were fourteen. You started out being very skittish towards him. You didn't know what he would do to you. Eventually, you two have grown closer and closer together.
Vlahd has been teaching you Russian, and you have been working your ass off during training with him. He has taken you under his wing and now you live with him in an apartment Red Leader has for him. All of Red's most important people have their own apartment-type rooms. Vlahd's is built with a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and an entire ass library. Your room is right across from Vlahds. You have to do chores in your and Vlahd's apartment as well, but it's a small price to pay for a roof over your head and a non-toxic father figure.
"Y/n, ужины готовы (Y/n, dinner's ready)." Vlahd calls from the kitchen, you get up from your desk and decide to finish your studies later. You walk into the kitchen and see a big pot on the stove, whenever that big pot comes out, you know he's making borscht. You celebrate in silence and take a bowl from the cupboard. You spoon some borscht into your bowl, then you proceed to the dinning room table to sit with Vlahd. A little tradition you both started to do to make tou more comfortable around him. "So, how was your day?" You ask, to get a conversation going. "Все было хорошо, а как насчет твоего (It was okay, what about yours?)?" "Mine was pretty good." You say, spooning some borscht into your mouth.
"О, между прочим, Красный Лидер хочет, чтобы я нашел солдата, который недавно ушел из МВД. Так что завтра тебе не нужно тренироваться или учиться, у тебя выходной (Oh, by the way, Red Leader wants me to go find a soldier who has gone MIA recently. So you don't have to do any training or studies tomorrow, you have the day off.)." Vlahd finishes. You nod your head in understanding. "Who do you have to find?" It was often that soldiers went MIA to try and get out of the army and Red Leader's deal. Red is a ruthless man. "Мэтт, я думаю, его зовут (Matt, I think his name is)."
A small 'ohhhhh' left your mouth. Vlahd has had problems with this soldier before. He was not following orders, so Vlahd was ordered to contain him with any force necessary. That didn't go so well. Apparently, another person with Matt turned into a fucking horned beast and sent Vlahd to the medical wing for two weeks. He had broken two of Vlahds ribs and broke his leg. Finishing up your borscht, you bid Vlahd a goodnight, put your bowl and spoon in the sink, and return back to your room to finish your studies before you go to bed.
You awake to your alarm beeping at you. Sighing, you begrudgingly get up and put on your uniform and proceed to role call . After that, you take off your uniform and pick out your clothes for the day. If you're off duty, you don't have to wear your uniform. You pull out a f/c sweater and a pair of black jeans. You get dressed and go to the bathroom, Vlahd has already left, so you have the bathroom all to yourself. You take a shower and proceed with your morning routine. After you're done, you decide to make yourself some toast and have a nice cup of coffee. After you finish your breakfast, you clean up the kitchen and bathroom out of boredom. You pull out your phone and check the time. The digital screen reads 10:36 am, you groan out of boredom. Then, a wonderful idea popped into your head, you decided to take a walk off base.
You made sure to write a note for Vlahd and stuck it on the fridge if he returns before you're back. You also ask Red Leader if it's okay. He said that it was, so you go ahead and take a secret trail off base and into a huge, lush forrest. You stick in some earbuds and continue to walk into the forrest. From this trail, there is a small town on the other side. Usually when the base runs low on food, plates, utensils, etc, there is a store where you can buy things in bulk for cheap. You also know of a small café where you like to get drinks, they have really good tea and coffee. You arrive at Le Café de Campagne and enter. You order your favorite drink off the menu. You pay and sit down at the cute tables. The café was heavily inspired by France, with relatively French architecture and design.
Cute glass tables and tall chairs are scattered around the small café, a gorgeous mural is painted on the back wall near the counter and cash register. The mural depicts a beautiful countryside with a small cottage to the left behind a field of yellow and pink flowers. In the background, snowy-topped mountains and another cottage sit beautifully. The baby blue sky and fluffy clouds pull the entire piece together. Cute black vases hold pink and yellow tulips along with napkins, salt, and pepper. A display counter with delectable sweets ranging from Macaroons to Tarte Tatin sit in the window, ready to be eaten. On top of the display counter sits a miniature Eiffel Tower, and a bunch of other mini versions of popular tourist attractions such as the Louvre and the Notre Dame cathedral. The people who work there are pretty cool as well. You know most if the people that work there, such as Andrea. She's been working at the café since it opened three years ago. She's easily one of the sweetest people you've ever met.
"Y/n, you're order is ready!" Andrea's sweet voice calls to you. "Thank you so much, have a good day Andrea!" "You too Y/n!" She calls as you walk out the door. You continue to stroll through the tiny town, looking into windows of small shops. You stop in front of a small thrift store, you decide to look around. You start in the CD and DVD section. You found a CD of your favorite band, and a Smash Mouth CD, both for lest than a euro. Obviously, you decide to buy them. You go looking around in the long sleeve shirt section. You pulled out a cute blue-grey sweater that says "Big Dick Energy" on it in bold letters, as if it were school apparel. You look at the tag, it's your size and only five euros. You take that with you as well. Moving across to the pants section, you find a cute pair of high waisted black ripped jeans. They're your size and only seven euros, so you take it. You bring your items up to the cashier, you pay, then you leave.
You decide to walk more into the forest. You take a short cut through an alleyway between the thrift store and a small bank. You push past a few stray branches and step over some shrubbery. You walk along a naturally formed pathway, admiring the beauty of the nature around you. You keep walking until you feel a droplet of rain fall on your forehead, then a couple more. You take cover underneath a tree as rain pours from the sky. You slide your small f/c backpack off of your shoulders and pull out a travel sized sketchbook and a pencil case full of pencils and pens. You take out a graphite pencil and begin to sketch out some scenery infront of you. Rows upon rows of tall oak trees sit infront of you, along with a line of small bushes keeping the trees from growing onto that pathway. The dirt pathway is damp with rain water, some weeds and flowers have managed to grow through the pathway.
After you're done, you marvel at your sketch, you're definitely putting this on your wall later. You pack up your sketchbook and utensils. You also manage to fit your new thrifted items into your bag as well. You pick up the cup that houses the few drops left of your drink from the café. You quickly make it back to town and find a garbage can to throw the cup away. The rain is still coming down hard, and it's getting dark out. You pull out your phone and check the time. Your digital screen reads 16:57 (4:57 pm). You slip your phone back into the pocket of your jeans and hurriedly walk back to base. Almost slipping in mud a few times, you make it back to base. Once you enter your and Vlahd's apartment, You speed walk to your room and peel off your soaking wet clothes. You enter the bathroom and toss your clothes into the washer to clean them.
Slipping on the clothes you bought, you put away your CDs, wallet, sketchbook, and pencil case. You flop on your bed, now bored. You decide to re-read your favorite book, you haven't read it in a while. In the middle of you reading your book, you got a text from Vlahd. 'Подойдите к входу в большую базу, это срочно (Come to the big entrance, it's urgent.' The text reads, you respond with an 'okay'. You throw another pair of shows on that aren't soaking wet and speed walk to the big entrance in the base. That entrance is usually used for big shipments of cargo, you wonder what could have happened. Anxiety begins to catch up with you and so many negative thoughts run wild in your head. Your speed walking turns into a jog, which turns into a run, which turns into a sprint. You're dodging soldiers as you sprint down to the big entrance.
"Sargent Major Vlahd!" One of the nurses says in shock. You turn the corner just in time to see Vlahd, kneeled over. Your eyes begin to well up with tears. He's covered in blood, parts of his uniform are gone and replaced with huge gashes, his left arm is completely gone. He looks up at you, he sees you almost in tears, he tries to stand back up, but one of the nurses grabs his arm. "Take him to the infirmary, stat!" She says, trying to hustle him past the crowd that formed behind the nurses. Everyone is talking around you, can't hear anything though because of how shocked and overwhelmed you are. Vlahd tries to say something to you, but he's in so much pain that he cant speak. You have people step aside so the nurses can get through to make it to the infirmary in time.
You follow them to the medical wing, you try to follow them into the infirmary, but they won't let you. That's kind of understandable though, considering he needs emergency surgery to fix his arm, or what he has left of his arm. You see him through the infirmary window. Making eye contact with you, he gives you a weak smile before passing out from blood loss. You decide it's best to go back to your apartment, and wait it out. One of the nurses gave you her number to get updates on how Vlahd is doing. She knows how close you are with him, she could tell by the look in your eyes that you were devastated when he came back. You enter the apartment and go straight to your room.
You can't help but cry. You lost one of your father figures and you sure as hell aren't going to lose another one. In the middle of you sobbing, you get a text from the nurse, saying that Vlahds surgery was successful. He's going to have to stay in the infirmary for two to three weeks, but he's going to recover. You start sobbing harder out of pure joy. You hadn't even realized that you've been sobbing for almost two hours straight. The clock on your phone reads '20:37' (8:37 pm). You quickly go out to the kitchen and heat up some leftover borscht from last night. After you finish dinner, you go to bed. All of that crying made you exhausted.
Waking up was a but hard today, but you knew if you didn't show up for role call, Red Leader would be upset. Nobody want's to upset Red, he's terrifying when he's angry. So, you begrudgingly get up and grab an extra uniform you have. Walking into the bathroom, you remember about your clothes from last night. You take them and shove them in the dryer. You do your morning routine and then throw on your uniform half hazardly in a rush to get to role call. Making it to the role call room a bit early, you check your schedule for today. You have patrol with Paul today and that's it. Patrol is just you and Paul standing outside if the bases main entrance to make sure no one comes that isn't expected. Usually these are six hour shifts, but you only have to do four today. Thankfully its only a four hour shift today, you don't think you're mentally well enough to stay for six.
After role call, you met Paul by the main entrance of the base. You two greeted each other, then stayed silent. Until Paul spoke up, "I'm so sorry kiddo. I know this can be very stressful, especially when someone you're close to gets severely injured. It's really not fair what happened to him. Hopefully, he'll recover soon and things will go back to some sort of normality." You pull Paul into a tight hug. A few tears slip out of your tired eyes.You haven't had the time to really process this information. Now that you are on patrol, you can kinda marinate in your thoughts. You pull away from Paul's embrace, "Thank you Paul, I really needed that." You sigh, wiping away the tears that stuck to your flushed cheeks.
After Patrol, you go back to your apartment and change. You change into the Maroon sweater and jeans that are in the dryer. Before you head to the infirmary, you text the nurse to see if Vlahd is awake. Vlahd is a stong man, so the nurses and doctors had to use a lot of anesthesia to keep him unconscious during surgery. The nurse said he was awake, just a bit groggy. You thank the nurse and haul ass to the infirmary. You arrive at medical wing. The medical wing is confusing as hell to navigate. Its three floors, one is where the receptionist desk is, the waiting room, and all the machines like the x-rays, the cat scans, etc. The second one is used for less severe injuries, the third one is used for intensive care. Vlahd is on floor three, room number 108.
"Hello honey, what brings you to the medical wing today?" The receptionist asks in a heavy Jersey accent. "Hello, I'm here to visit Sargent Major Vlahd." The receptionist nods and types something on her keyboard. "Oh! You're Y/n, correct?" You nod. "Okay, sign this out for me please and write your name on this." She hands you a clipboard with a piece of paper you had to fill out in order to visit someone in intensive care. She also hands you a visitor pass that you stick on your shirt. Kind of like a name tag. You fill out the paperwork and pads, then you put the visitors pass on your sweater. You give the paperwork back to the nurse. "Alright sweetie, you know where Vlahd's room is right?" You nod. "Okay, have a good one!" "You too miss." You respond to the receptionist.
You impatiently ride the elevator up to floor three. As soon as the elevator opens, you speed walk to Vlahds room. Knocking on the door, you wait for permission to enter the room. "You can come in hon." The nurse says from the other side of the door. Proceeding to enter the room, all your attention goes to Vlahd. He looks miserable. "I'll leave you twonalone for a while, just hit the bed alarm if you need me." The nurse says then leaves the room. As soon as the nurse leaves the room. You sit down next to him, and try to hold in your tears. You dont want to overwhelm him more than he probably already is. Vlahd tries to sit up, but you try to make him lay down again, he can't be straining this much. Although, considering Vlahd is a powerhouse of strength, you didn't get very far.
Instead, you gave up on fighting against him. Surprisingly, Vlahd pulls you into a tight hug. "Все в порядке, дорогая, все будет в порядке (It's okay honey, it'll all be okay.)." You broke down once again, sobbing into Vlahd's shoulder. You unknowingly grabbed fistfuls of his gown. "P-please don't ever leave me, I can't handle this, please d-don't ever leave me dad-" you cut yourself off has soon as 'dad' left your mouth. "I'm so sorry Vlahd, I-I didn't mean to- " "Y/n." Vlahd silences you. "Все в порядке. Я горжусь тем, что являюсь твоим отцом. Ты чертовски ребенок (It's okay. I'm proud to be your father figure. You're one hell of a kid.)." Vlahd states, you hug him once again.
"Thanks, dad."
Supernatural Rewatch Ramblings: Dead in the Water
This episode is the first one to be directed by Kim Manners. It was written by Raelle Tucker and Sera Gamble. It is still the MoTW format and once again the ‘monster’ is something that was created by human action. Ordinary seeming stories—of bullying, lies, cover up—with deadly consequences.
Read below the cut for more and also watch out for the add-ons by my partner in crime @soulmates-for-real who does the most amazing gifsets and image galleries 😎
It reminded me of this quote:
“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918–1956
It is a chilling experience—both the actual monster when we do finally see it and the backstory of what really happened. These monsters are all created by the flawed human beings. Here is another quote from the same source which could well be the underlying bedrock of the two very different approaches we see Sam and Dean take in later episodes to the whole saving people hunting things.
“Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.” .
Philosophical overtones aside, we are also getting more glimpses into the heads and hearts of the two leads.
It is already obvious that Dean has put the whole ‘Dad- is- missing- and- hasn’t- been-home-in -a -few-days stuff’ on the back burner till …ummm forever ? cos he has Sammy in front of his eyes who is sitting shotgun and being completely brotherly and sniping and bitching while also being boyfriend- level possessive.
As I said in the earlier review- I was just so swept away by the swashbuckling swagger of Dean that so obviously was an armour for his vulnerability that I almost didn’t notice Sam much. This is the episode where he became something more for me. Someone who was also finding out what Dean was all about at the same time as we were.
Someone who could pull him down to earth with a sharp: ‘People don’t just disappear, Dean. Other people just stop looking for them.’
But also reach out to him and remind him that they ‘can’t save everyone’.
In an early scene in the episode Sam scolds Dean for even starting to flirt with the waitress.
He smirks when Andrea shoots Dean down. He mocks Dean’s pick- up line about kids are the best. He seems pleased in a very petty way that Dean’s attempt has failed and that he has no choice now but to hang out with Sam and to give him his full attention.
The episode does have plot holes –that house Lucas draws and the history of the friendship of the two men and the missing boy surely must be well known to everyone in that small town, including Lucas’s mother and how come no one joins the dots etc. etc.
But small quibbles aside, we get to see that the past casts long shadows—whether sins of the past or just events of the past. ( again a parallel to the lives of the Winchesters themselves. And in later seasons we find out just how far back into the past those shadows reach!)
We see that Dean connects with the mute boy, Lucas, but then we learn that he can do this because he had also shut down after he saw his mother die and he knows how scary the world can seem and how he needed to make himself brave to carry on.
Sam watches from the sidelines and we can see him have an ‘oh ok’ moment as he stores away this information because it has clearly never been discussed in the family earlier. Kudos to Jared for being amazing with the ‘active listening’ that Sheila O’Malley references so often.
So despite Sam challenging him to name 3 kids he even knows, we see that Dean actually focusses on the kid throughout. The shared sense of loss aside, maybe Dean also sees himself as the protector of all little kids especially after the Shtriga incident. (which we don’t know anything about yet) (and we do see him bond with kids in every episode that involves kids. It is adorable !!)
In this episode Dean is almost drowning in his dad’s leather jacket and the way the silver ring looks on his hand is just ridiculously sexy…sigh….and that amulet right where it belongs…..deeper sigh. Then the cocky grin, the unsubtle flirting, all macho/manly/me- so- hetero/me- see- me- conquer on the outside but the soft squidgy child- whispering caramel centre, the trauma of being a motherless kid—having become motherless in a brutal way, a missing and probably almost cruel dad, a brother he raised as his own who walked out on him to go seek his own dreams….all these layers are being put together slowly for us.
Dean is not what he seemed to be and that brash swashbuckling exterior hides a very complex and interesting person. The script and direction were excellent of course but Jensen brought to it just the perfect balance of bad-boy + I wuv hugs.
Sam is still finding his way into the story and we are still watching things from Dean’s perspective as narrator which is fascinating to realize during the re-watch. As I have mentioned earlier, I was so swept away by Dean that it took me a very long time to focus on Sam as a separate person.
Ok, now, all together shout--- --WHY do people DO the following things??!!!
Put hands elbow deep into a sink, give lifts to obvious deranged malevolent spirits in human form, ‘let’s split up so we can cover more ground’, go into a shower/bath in a scary scene—can’t they HEAR the dun-dun-dun music score in the background?!! Sheesh.
Anyway. *eyeroll*
In a not- at- all- very- surprising turn of events Sam and Dean’s fake identity is called out and they are asked to leave town, which they do. But ….of course Dean does a very dramatic turn on the highway and takes them back to make sure the kid is ok!
Then Sam rescues the mother from the lethal bath- tub while Dean makes sure the kid is safe. Then they start to connect even more dots and eventually we see an incredible heroic rescue scene in the scary lake with Dean and the boy.
Jensen had described this shot in some interview as the most terrifying scene he had ever done apparently because he was responsible not only for doing the scene right but also for the young boy’s safety underwater.
What a fabulous visual we do get finally, with the boy in his embrace as they shoot out of the water!
That lake with its dark water is one super creepy place. That very first scene where we see the girl swimming from an underwater perspective had me yelling at the screen for her to GET OUT NOW.
So, finally, all is sorted and revenge has been had and bad folks die, good folks live and as they leave the town of course Lucas chats with Dean and they high five and just like the sister in the Wendigo episode, the young mother in this one also gives Dean a kiss on his cheek. Dean of course blushes and goes all gruff and drives off with Sam smirking in the shotgun seat.
The pattern is beginning to be established.
I am loving it!😍
.
The gag reel of this episode shows Jensen leaping into Jared’s arms.
This is the third episode only. So they have known each other only for a couple of months at this point?! Hmm…my J2 tinhat is also shining. And also wow. I mean Jensen is NOT a tiny guy.
Here are some other possibly more erudite and informed reviews if you would like to go down that rabbit hole like I did.
This one is cool https://the-orbit.net/entequilaesverdad/2016/05/10/supernatural-s1-e3-dead-water-summary/ and gives a fun and interesting score at the end which goes like this
Episode 3 counts:
Woman in the Fridge: 1
For Sophie Carlton being the first to get murdered by the vengeful spirit. It’s obviously meant to hook us harder: I mean, nobody would care as much about obnoxious brother Will, right?
Revenge from Beyond the Grave: 4
Sophie Carlton, Will Carlton, Bill Carlton, and Jake Devins.
Brotherly Love: 2
I had to give one to Sam for cock-blocking his brother right at the start. Another point goes to Dean’s sick-of-your-attitude lecture to his little brother, throwing Sam’s decision to go to college while Dean stayed behind with their dad in his face.
Toxic Masculinity: 1
For Dean downplaying his grief when Sam draws him out about the aftermath of their mother’s death.
Swimming in Sexism: 2
For Will Carlton’s comment to his sister that “guys don’t like buff girls.” I added a point for all the times they had Dean hitting on any available woman. They do want us to be extra-very sure he’s hetero, don’t they?
Cumulative Counts: Dean’s Man Tears: 3
One point awarded for all Dean’s choking up about Mom. We’re now three for three, folks.
.
This review totally calls out Dean LOL. I love the reviews that were written as first watch because they are without the benefit of hindsight we have on a re-watch.
.
“It was fascinating to me, then, that through this, Sam was able to learn about Dean’s own emotional reasoning behind his hunting. Of course, Dean, being the most stereotypical dude of all dudes who ever duded, has to immediately act like feelings aren’t cool because BLEH. Okay, that is one aspect of Dean that I’m not terribly interested in, especially since he expresses feelings like every five seconds. The whole “I am a straight man and I’m very straight and look at that butt straight I’m straight” thing is already exhausting because I get it. You don’t need to tell me this every five seconds.”
The comments to this review are also super entertaining with gems like this:
“So, if you knew that someone had drowned in the lake recently and their body was never found, WHY WOULD YOU STILL GO SWIMMING IN THE LAKE? Especially if two people had. It wouldn't make you think, "Hey, maybe there's something dangerous in that lake?" This show has some of the least genre savvy people EVER. Like, for example, once this mysterious death thing shows up in a sink, why would anyone want to take a bath or really ever fill any basin with water again? Seriously, is this the Bad Decision Olympics?”
.
Here is an awesome review from Fangasm also
Hey dude, I was wondering, whenever you have time, and whenever you feel like it, could you maybe write a fluffy platonic bestfriend!harry with a reader who's like 17-18 and an actress who's in a movie and he writes a song for the movie so that's how they know each other, and they're doing the press tour of the movie together and an interviewer is being rude and Harry defends her?
Oh my gosh, I love this idea SO MUCH! I’m literally a sucker for best friend Harry, it’s my favorite thing to write.
Also sorry for taking a bit to reply, I’m still trying to figure out how to use tumblr, lol. And I changed her age to ab freshly 20 :p
any who, hope you like it!
-m
“And cut!” The director yells, and the bell goes off. Everyone is on the go as soon as he gives the cue. Y/n’s makeup team coming over to fix her hair and makeup.
“Do you guys think I’m doing good?” She questions, a little nervous about how well she is performing. She is a new actress after all, this is her first big Hollywood movie! After many failed auditions, and small parts on Netflix series she finally got herself a big role.
“You are doing amazing girl. No need to be nervous.” Her hair stylist, Anna, reassures her. Her makeup artist, jay, nodding his head in agreement.
“They love you, y/n. You were cast for a reason, girly. Now show em what you got.”
“Thank you guys.” She smiles at them and her cheeks redden at her friends compliments. The bell goes off and they all get ready to film the next scene.
The rest of the day goes well and on her way out she bumps into someone, too busy looking down at her scripts just to make sure she remembers everything. Her scripts and keys fall out of her arms and land on the ground, next to whoever she bumped into journal.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry, that was totally my fault.” She quickly falls to bend her knees and pick up her things. The stranger bends next to her.
“‘S ok, I wasn’t paying attention either.” His voice sounds familiar. So fucking familiar. But she can’t put a finger on it. She looks up when she gathers her things. Her eyes meeting the strangers for the first time. “Oh I know you. Your the lead character, y/n l/n.” She smiles at, finding it strange that he recognizes her. Harry Styles. Harry styles recognizes her. And she decides that’s the coolest thing ever. “‘M actually writin’ a song for your movie.” They both stand to their full height and he hands her her keys.
“I heard about that! That must be super cool. I’ve always been super interested in music. Just wish I didn’t sound like a dying cat.” They both laugh lightly at that, and he shakes his head at her.
“Doubt that.”
“I wish your doubts were correct. But unfortunately they aren’t.” He just chuckles before he suddenly remembers something.
“I forgot to introduce myself. ‘M Harry.” He holds his hand out, and she takes it in hers and shakes his hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you, Harry. I’ve actually heard some of your stuff before. ‘M quite a fan of Fine Line.” He shyly smiles and their hands go back to their side.
“I don’t mean this in a weird way, but would you want to go grab some coffee?” She smiles and nods her head.
“Would love too.” He nods and gives her a smile before they turn to walk out. As they walk to his car, she assumes, she remembers something her coworkers briefly mentioned. “Aren’t you gonna have a small part in the movie?” She questions, looking over at him.
“Yeah actually, ‘m quite excited.”
“It’s gonna be fun. I saw Dunkirk so I know you will kill whatever scene you have. Aren’t you in a few with me and Andrea?” She questions.
“Five scenes total.” He informs her. “Then I have a few more with Timothee and Jeniffer.”
“That’ll be fun. We party a lot in those scenes.” She shimmies her shoulders when she says party to add some effect, and it does what she intends to and makes him laugh.
They reach Harry’s car and he takes them to a small cafe. They chat over tea and coffee, y/n also having a double chocolate chip muffin because she couldn’t resist. They talk about growing up, all things music, y/n’s career, Harry career. They both tell stories of the craziest moments they have so far in their journey of success. Both have a good time.
They get to know each other and at the end of the night they exchange numbers. He takes her back to set and drops her off by her car. He tells her goodnight and she does the same, smiling when she sat down in her car.
She hope she just made a new friend. They had so many things in common. From the way they dress, the music they like, their favorite food, etc. She thinks it’s safe to say the connected well at the small cafe and she hopes this is the start of them becoming close friends.
And they do end up becoming close friends over the six months they work together. Harry ended up coming to set more often than not, bringing lunch to y/n or eating the food they serve. They go back to her trailer and eat their food, catching up with each other, and sometimes having a food fight. Harry updates her on the songs he is writing, or the Gucci ads he has been modeling for. She tells him about the scene they filmed, or some small roles she has been offered. They also catch up, asking eachother about how their families are doing, making plans for later that night or if one of them had an event they wanted the other to accompany them too.
They both know each other’s families well. They spend the night at each other houses often. Harry takes her to the studios on her days off, showing her the process of recording. She instantly connects with Jeff as well since they both have a similar since if humor that includes teasing Harry on the regular.
But now the filming was done, and so was the editing. They were two weeks away from the release! Y/n was excited but also extremely nervous. But now they were all doing a press tour. And lucky for y/n, Harry got to tag along because of his small role and because he wrote most of the sound track for the movie.
They were about to go on another interview, this one just her and Harry. Their costars doing their own interviews scattered around the building. She was happy her and harry were partnered to do all the interviews today, it meant more time to goof off with him when they aren’t supposed to.
“Well first off I just want to say thank you guys for sitting down with me today.” The interviewers starts, his name y/n found out, is Ben.
“Thank you for having us.” They both say simultaneously.
“So let’s talk about the movie. I know y/n, you are a main character. Can you tell me what it’s like? Being new to the scene and working around men like Harry or Timothee? It’s got to be hard to contain yourself around the pair.” Y/n doesn’t know whether to scoff or smile through it and act like that wasn’t extremely sexist. But when she sees Harry visibly tense and his face harden she knows to just let it slide. She doesn’t want to start something that her manager will want to kill her for. So she bites her tounge.
“I don’t find it intimidating at all. Both of them are very talented, but I don’t find it intimidating. Especially not when they are you friends.” She puts an emphasis on friend.
“Harry, this is your second roll in a movie, and you wrote majority of the soundtrack, how was that? Do you think you will do more movies after this?” Y/n wants to roll her eyes. Of course he gets a normal question but she gets one asking if she could keep her legs closed around her best friend and costar.
“I enjoyed it. It got hectic and stressful at times. But I really enjoyed it and I enjoy acting and obviously writing and singing so I was glad I could do both.” The interviewer nods and this is how the next few questions go. Y/n getting questions like “which costar would you rather date?” “Did you have a crush on anyone while filming?” Really inappropriate and unprofessional questions. But Harry got questions about the writing process, what his favorite scene to film was, and so on. But it was obvious both of them were fed up with the interviewer asking her the types of questions he was. So after the third question Harry chimed in before y/n could come up with an answer that would answer it but not really answer it.
“‘M sorry, but are you gonna actually ask her about the movie? Or how her acting career has been going? Or just anything other than if she found someone hot or who she would mess around with? It’s quite unprofessional and it’s clearly making her uncomfortable.” The interviewer stills, his cheeks flushing. Even the camera crew stills and in the background I can hear jay clapping and saying “yes Harry” faintly. A small smile forms on her face and she looks over at her best friend, noticing how his gaze is strong as he looks at the interviewer with a penetrating gaze. Harry sounded very professional and calm when he told the interviewer off, but his eyes give away exactly how he feels.
“Right, my apologies y/n. But I think that’s actually a wrap.” He looks over at the director and nods.
He doesn’t even shake their hands before he leaves. He just scurries away with bright red cheeks as everyone’s eyes follow him.
“Thank you for that, H.” She smiles up at him before her arms go around his neck and his go around her waist.
“No need t’thank me. No lady should be asked those questions. It’s no ones business who yeh fancy, or whatever the fuck else he was trying to dig out of yeh. ‘S not the ass hats bloody business.” She chuckles and shakes her head, patting his back lightly.
“It’s ok, Harry. You already told him off, no need to get upset over it again.” She pulls back when she’s done talking and Harry huffs.
“Guess yer right.” She smiles at him and pats his head before they walk off set. As they leave the building she loops her arm around his waist and he does the same around her. Her head rests on his shoulder and his lays on hers as they leisurely walk outside.
“Wanna go get some ice cream?” She questions, already knowing his answer but wanting to see his reaction. His head pops up and he looks at her with wide eyes.
“Course I want t’get ice cream! Only mad men turn down ice cream.” She laughs and shakes her head before he stops in his tracks.
“Race you to the car, loser pays.” She squints her eyes at him and holds her hand out.
“Deal.” He goes to shake her hand but she pulls away and starts running towards Harry’s car.
“That’s not fair!” He chuckles, running a little bit behind her.
And in the end, Harry ends up paying for the ice cream with a pout on his face.
Nervous Regrets - Tyler Seguin - Part 22
Word Count: 6489
POV: Reader
Warnings: None
Notes: I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas today if you’re celebrating! I’m so excited for you all to read this one, it’s the proposal; and it’s so soft. I hope you guys enjoy it as much I enjoyed writing it. I’m also going to do a 22.5 which will be from Tyler’s pov, so you can see all he went through. With that, happy reading everyone. Peace, love and hugs to all!
Tyler didn’t get to stay home long after Thanksgiving, in fact he was back on the road in a couple of days. This trip was extra hard as he was gone for another ten days. These long stretches were killer on you both, for lately it seemed like you just wanted to spend all your time with each other. Though he did call you several times throughout the day and always at the end of the night before you both would fall asleep.
You kept yourself busy looking into new charities for Tyler to endorse. Most game nights you spent with the wags, either at one of their houses or at yours. It was always fun hosting the ladies at the new house, and they always made sure to have some fun non-alcoholic beverage to include you in toasting the teams wins. The only strange thing was when you’d talk about the Fire and Ice gala that was coming up, no one seemed to have any information on it or what the event was even about. Most of the time the Stars foundation would at least reach out to one of you with all the details, though this time it seemed very hush hush. However, you, Alandra and Andrea all made appointments at the salon that day for a day of pampering and to get all dolled up.
Tyler was still pouting that he hadn’t seen the dress you’d bought, but just as Candace and Cassidy suggested, you’d wanted to wait till that night to show him. You’d actually caught him snooping around in the spare bedroom closet looking for it one day. “I just want to see it.” Or so he explained when you caught him rummaging around.
“You’re just going to have to wait until tomorrow night.”
“Fine.”
“What are you wearing by the way? Do I need to have any of your suits cleaned before tomorrow?” The two of you were still in the closet. Tyler seemed antsy, but you chalked it up to him being caught looking for your dress.
“You’re just going to have to wait until tomorrow night.” He teased you back, then ushered you out of the spare closet.
“Ha, ha, you’re so funny. I’m being serious. Do any of your shirts need cleaned from the road trip? I can run them to the cleaners now and they’ll be done by tomorrow.”
“Umm…actually, I’ll take them myself. I’ve got a few errands to run anyhow.”
“Oh perfect. I’ll come with you; I need to pick some things up from the store as well.” You were almost out of the moisturizer you used, so why not head over to the store with him as it was on the way.
“No!” You cocked your head at his sharp tone. “I mean…well, it’s just going to take me a long time and we probably shouldn’t both be gone from the dogs that long.”
You quirked an eyebrow at him. It wasn’t like you were leaving the dogs for days, just a few hours. “What are you talking about? They’ll be fine. We’ve left for a lot longer than to run errands.”
“It’s just they’re used to you being home now…and I think they’ll miss you if you leave.”
“Ty, they’ll be fine. They’re not that attached to me.”
“It’s just…Gerry hasn’t been feeling well.”
“Huh?” You glanced over at the three dogs, who were in the room with you. “Gerry’s fine, I just spent the last seven days with him, and he was fine the whole time. Well except for…” You shut your mouth before you got the pup in anymore trouble.
“Wait what did he do?”
“Nothing, he didn’t do a thing. Now come on let’s go. So we don’t leave the dogs too long.” You said sarcastically.
“I really think you should stay here with the dogs. They just seem lonely today.”
“Tyler, what is your problem? Why don’t you want me to go with you?” A pit formed in your stomach as you started thinking of reasons that he wouldn’t want you to go. Things had been going so great between the two of you, though the ten day stretch was hard; you didn’t think it put that much of a strain on your relationship. He’d seemed fine when he got home, in fact so fine that the two of you made up for those ten days apart by having sex no less than three times in the last twenty-four hours. You didn’t want to think about him cheating, but it popped into your brain anyway. What if he was going to see someone else? You tried to squash the uneasy feeling in your stomach, but with each passing moment he didn’t answer you, you grew more and more fearful. Finally when the silence stretched too long you said, “Just go do whatever it is you have to do.” With that you walked out of the spare bedroom and down the steps, tears starting to form as you left.
By the time you reached the kitchen, a few tears had slipped out; you swiped at them angrily, then grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and walked outside. You knew that Tyler would be coming downstairs any minute, and you didn’t feel like speaking with him at the moment. Instead you wondered around the outside in the cold November air. It helped cool the anger boiling through your veins. About ten minutes past before you heard the garage door open and the sound of the car engine, as it pulled out of the drive. It was then, that you finally broke down. Tyler left without even trying to look for you. His “errands” were more important than you were, and the more you thought about that, the harder you sobbed.
How could you have let your guard down, and believe that you and Tyler would have a perfect life together? Things were just too good to be true, and honestly you should’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop. The question now was, what did you do? You knew you had to confront him about the issue and find out if he really was cheating. Your heart didn’t want it to be true and neither did your mind. When you thought about it, there was no real proof; other than the fact he’d been acting strange since he came home. Grabbing your phone out of your pocket, you sat there deciding whether or not to look online for any information. Finger hoovering over the Instagram icon, you debated with yourself on what do to. Then Andrea Bishop’s word echoed in your head; you needed to tune out everything that was on there. So instead you called your friend Jenna. As one of your best friends, she was always the voice of reason and would hopefully be able to help tell you what to do.
“Oh no what’s wrong?” You hadn’t even said hello, but Jenna could tell by your light sobs something was off.
“I think Tyler might be cheating on me.” Somehow you managed to get it all out before you sniffed loudly in the phone, then broke down crying again.
“Oh my god, calm down. Tell me why you think that?” When you continued crying into the phone, she said. “Things have been going so well between the two of you; maybe this is just a misunderstanding.”
“I don’t know maybe.” You finally choked out.
“So tell me why you think he’s cheating.”
“He’s just been super strange since he got home…and today I asked him if anything needed to go to the cleaners for the gala, that I could take it for him.” A hiccup escaped you as you told Jenna what happened only a short time ago. “He told me he would do it, because he had some errands to run. I said I’d go with him because I had some to do too; yet he insisted I stay home.”
“Well that doesn’t make me think he’s cheating.” “You don’t understand, he made up that Gerry was sick and I should stay home with him. We both know there’s nothing wrong with Gerry or the other dogs. He just wanted to sneak away from the house without me; and it’s probably because he’s seeing someone else.”
“Oh (Y/N), I don’t think it’s that at all.” You perked up a little bit at Jenna’s comment.
“Really?”
“(Y/N) that man is head over heels in love with you. I can’t see him having some fling while he’s out of town. That was the old Tyler. This Tyler is totally dedicated to you and your baby.” She did make sense. It was only today that he’d been acting weird. “You have that gala tomorrow right”
“Yeah.”
“Well, maybe he’s trying to do something special for you; like rent a limo or something.” That seemed a bit far-fetched.
“If he was going to do something like that, he could just call. There has to be something more.” You were convinced there was something going on, you just couldn’t put your finger on it.
“It’s probably something more extravagant than that; it was just the first thing that popped in my head. But I definitely know he’s not cheating on you.” “How can you be so sure?”
“Because if he is, I’ll beat the shit out of him.” You couldn’t help yourself, you laughed. Somehow, you could picture your best friend beating up Tyler; and you had a feeling she’d win. “Do you need me to come over there now, because I will?”
“No, but thanks for the offer. Just talking to you about it, made me feel better. I know you’re right; I don’t think he’d cheat on me. I just can’t explain his actions today.”
“Well you know Tyler, he’s probably trying to surprise you; though he never does it in a normal way.” Jenna was more than likely right. “I hate to cut this short, but I’ve gotta run. Are you sure you’re ok? Because I can cancel my plans and be right over.”
“No I’ll be fine. I’m sorry for bugging you.”
“(Y/N) you’re never a bother, this is what best friends are for; but I really have to run.” You felt bad for keeping your best friend from her plans, though she hadn’t mentioned what they were. ‘Sorry I’m late.’ You heard a distinct male voice in the background, which sounded a lot like Tyler.
“Is that Tyler?”
“What?...umm…No.” There was a slight panic in her voice. “That’s Bill…my date.”
“But I thought you wanted us to set you up with Jamie?”
“Umm…yeah I dp. It’s a long story, I’ll tell you about it later…I’m really late for this…thing. Promise I’ll tell you later…bye.”
“B…” She hung up before you could even say goodbye. Now you were worried about your best friend. The last time the two of you talked, she couldn’t stop talking about Jamie and how perfect he was. You thought the two of them would be great together. This day just kept getting weirder by the minute. Maybe you should just go lay down and start the whole thing over again. The wind blew just then, making you realize how cold it actually was outside.
Once inside you decided it wasn’t such a bad idea to just lay down and take a nap; so you crawled into your bed, the dogs following. They’re warm bodies felt good against your chilled bones as the three of you cuddled. You still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going on with Tyler, but you tried to convince yourself that things would be fine. Closing your eyes, you let sleep take you. You weren’t sure how long you’d been asleep, but you woke up to Tyler gently shaking your dreaming form.
“Babe…babe.” You blinked your eyes at him, trying hard to wake yourself from slumber.
“Tyler?” You asked groggily. “What time is it?”
“It’s almost three o’clock.”
“Mmmm. I didn’t realize I’d slept that long.” As you became fully awake, memories of the morning started to invade your fog filled brain. You sat up, trying to get out of the bed, but were trapped between Tyler and the dogs. “Umm…can you let me up?”
“No.”
“Ty, please. I just want…” You didn’t know what you were going to do, or where you were going to go; you just knew that you wanted to put some distance between yourself and Tyler.
He brushed a stray lock of hair from your face, which made you flinch. “Baby, I’m sorry about earlier.” You turned your face from him, knowing you weren’t quite ready for this whole conversation. “Sweetheart, please look at me. I just want to talk to you.” A small tear ran down your cheek, and you quickly wiped it away. “Baby please don’t cry.” The pleading tone in his voice broke you, and before you knew what was happening; he wrapped you in his arms and held you to his chest. “Sshh, baby it’s ok.” He rubbed small circles on your back, which calmed you.
Once, you finally got ahold of your emotions you pulled back slightly from him. “Babe, don’t get mad; but I talked to Jenna.” You should’ve known she’d call and bitch him out; though you couldn’t be upset with her. She only ever had your best interest at heart. “I’m not cheating on you sweetie, I’m never going to do that again. You should know that by now.”
“I do. It’s just…” You took a deep breath before continuing. “You’ve been so weird since you came home, and you were so insistent that I not go with you today. I didn’t know what else to think.” He ran his fingers through his hair, a habit he had when he needed a minute to think. “I didn’t want you to come with me, because I was trying to surprise you with this.” He reached down and grabbed a small bag that he had by the bed; then handed over to you. “I wanted to give this to you tomorrow night, but…” He trailed off, while you blushed at your foolish thoughts of him cheating on you.
Nestled inside tissue paper was a black velvet box, which you knew contained something you didn’t deserve. “Ty I can’t.”
“(Y/N) if you don’t open that box this instant, I swear I’ll take you over my knee right now.” You raised your eyes at him, at his veiled threat; which was somewhat tempting in and of itself. “Don’t look at me like that.” He smirked. “Ok, so that wasn’t a very good threat, but I’ll do something you won’t like at all.”
A small giggle escaped your lips. “Well if you’re going to do ‘something I won’t like,’ I guess I better open this.” You lifted the lid on the velvet case. Inside lay a beautiful diamond pendant necklace. Small diamonds encircle two round cut stones; that then dropped down in to one large teardrop diamond. The teardrop diamond alone had to be three carats, not to mention the other stones that surrounded it. It literally stole your breath away. “Tyler, it’s too much.”
“Do you like it?”
“Like it! It’s breathtaking. I’ve never seen something so beautiful.”
“Well it pales compared to you.” His words made you melt. You didn’t deserve this man. A few tears spilled out your eyes yet again; though this time they were happy ones. “I just wanted to give you something special for tomorrow night.”
“Oh Tyler, I love it, but you didn’t need to do this; just being with you is enough.” Reaching over you planted a kiss on his lips. It wasn’t enough, this man deserved so much more; and he most definitely didn’t deserve your skepticism. You pulled back, to tell him this. “I’m so sorry I doubted you for even a minute Ty. I don’t deserve you.”
“Babe, don’t worry about it. I mean I’m not happy, that that’s the first thing you thought of; but at the same time I didn’t really help my cause insisting you stay home, with Gerry.” You both looked over at the pup, who was over in the corner clearly trying to play fetch by himself. “He’s obviously not sick.” Both of you laughed at the lie which Tyler had used earlier. “So how about I put this on you?”
He took the velvet box out of your hands, and started to take the necklace out of the package. “Wait…You wanted me to have this for tomorrow, maybe we should wait.”
“I’d rather have you wear this and nothing else right now. Call it your punishment for making me give it to you early.” He wiggled his eyes suggestively at you.
“Not that I mind that punishment at all, but don’t you have a game to get to soon?” He shrugged his shoulder, as if it didn’t matter. “And I haven’t made you dinner yet.”
“I’d rather have dessert first.” He leaned over and kissed you passionately, before pulling away to put the necklace on you; then went and lifted the hem of your shirt. “Now, about that punishment part.”
Tyler was a good fifteen minutes late in leaving for the game, but you both felt it was well worth any laps he’d have to do in practice the following morning. Luckily, you had another hour and half before you left to watch him play. The Stars were able to pull off a big win against the Oilers that night, which meant that everyone was in a good mood as you headed down to the tunnels. You were certain that everyone would want to go out and celebrate, considering the guys had the next three days off. However, everyone seemed to go their separate ways, and so you and Tyler headed home to just be with each other.
The next day, Tyler headed out to practice; while you met up with Andrea and Alandra later in the day. The three of you spent a relaxing day at the spa, where you got facials, pedicures and manicures; as well as getting your hair and makeup done for the gala that night. You had originally wanted to wear your hair how Candace had suggested, half-up, half-down; but once Tyler bought you that stunning pendant you felt as if you should showcase it and pull all your hair up. The stylist put a braid on the right side, pulling it out to give it a fuller look. She then swept it behind your ear, while creating a low bun with the remaining hair she had curled. She took down a few tendrils to frame your face. When it came to your makeup, the artist decided to go with a soft smokey eye to give you a more natural look. She used a soft pale pink blush on the apples of your cheeks, with a few gloss drops to give you that fresh dewy look. As for your lips, she kept them simple as well, lining them with a soft pink color that complimented the lipstick she’d chosen. She topped it off with a shimmery gloss, which made your lips look totally kissable. Of course, you ended up buying the lip shades she used, as you were sure you were going to need to reapply it even before you left the house. When you looked in the mirror the overall effect of your makeup and hair looked absolutely stunning; and briefly you wondered if you and Tyler would even make it out of the house tonight.
You hugged the girls goodbye, telling them you’d see them shortly; then headed home. Tyler had his head in the fridge, looking for something when you walked in the door, so it took him a moment to notice you. “Wow babe, you look amazing.”
“Thanks, I totally think I’m just going exactly like this tonight.” You still had a pair of jeans, with a button down shirt on. Though you knew once you put your gown on, your look would be complete; right now your outfit didn’t quite fit.
“You could wear a paper bag and be drop dead gorgeous.”
“Keep talking like that Seguin, and we may not leave this house tonight.” You slid your hands up his chest, then kissed his lips with your glossed ones.
He pulled away quicker than what you liked. “Well I better get my ass in the shower, before things get out of control here.” He kissed you again quickly. “Besides, I need to get myself cleaned up if I’m going to be standing next to you all night.” Reaching up you wiped the trace amount of lipstick off of his lips, before he headed off to your bedroom.
You made your way upstairs and got the gown out of the spare closet and the garment bag it was in. It looked so beautiful just hanging there, and you couldn’t wait to put it on. You dabbed some perfume behind your ears, as well as on your neck and wrists; then for good measure you applied a touch to your cleavage for the end of the night. Finally you slipped the dress on and checked your reflection in the mirror. You still felt like royalty in it. Last but not least you slid into the pair of pumps that you had bought to go with it. There was just one finishing touch left and that was the elaborate necklace Tyler had bought for you. As you placed it around your neck, you truly had to question if Tyler had seen the gown, for they seemed made for each other. With one last look in the mirror you headed down the stairs to meet Tyler.
He was standing in the foyer, fixing his cuff links when you walked downstairs. You took a moment to take the sight of him in. He was clad in a black suit, with a pristine white shirt. His vest was buttoned up and held in his black tie. Standing there, you couldn’t help but think of the first night you saw him. He was just as handsome that night as he was right now. It was easy to see how you fell in love with him, that first night. Visibly you shook yourself. Your movement caught his eyes and he looked up, his jaw going slack as he took in your appearance. “Ready to go?”
It took him a moment before he answered you. “Woah…babe, I’m speechless.” He moved closer to the stairs as you neared the bottom. “You look….” He seemed to be searching for words. “Gorgeous doesn’t seem to cover it.”
“You clean up pretty well yourself.” You added with a wink. His devilish smirk came out then. “Seriously Ty, I don’t think you’ve ever looked more handsome. Maybe the foundation needs to have more of these events.”
“I think I’m going to have to agree with you there.” He was still struggling with his left cuff link and you grabbed his hand and adjusted it for him, while he still drank in your appearance. “Baby, you’re just so damn beautiful.”
“Stop, you’re making me blush.”
“I can’t help it. I just don’t know how l got so lucky?” You gave him a quick peck on the lips, wiping your lipstick off of him.
“I’m pretty sure I’m the lucky one here.” After everything that happened yesterday, you truly felt blessed that you and Tyler found your way back to each other. “Alright, we better get going or we’ll be late.”
He glanced at his watch. “Right. I thought we’d take the Ferrari tonight, is that ok?”
“Yeah that works.” The two of you headed out. With all the traffic it took a few extra minutes to get to the venue. You were surprised when you pulled up to the place where you first met. “I thought we’d be at the arena.”
“Oh…ummm. I think it was booked or something, so they’re holding it here.” Tyler pulled up to the valet station and quickly jumped out of the car, so he could open your door instead of the attendant. He offered his hand to assist you out of the vehicle. You saw the appreciative glance the valet gave you as you emerged from the Ferrari. Apparently the dress concealed your baby bump more than you thought. Tyler glared at the young man, then slid his arm around your waist to draw you nearer.
As you walked into the building you noticed it wasn’t as crowded as you thought it would be. Maybe Tyler had gotten the time wrong. “I think we’re in the ballroom.” Tyler stated as he led you through the building. When you entered the ballroom, there was no one in the room, save a lonely waiter finishing up the place settings at one of the tables.
“Umm…what’s going on Ty?”
“I don’t know.” He made his way over to the server. “Excuse me sir, is this the right room for the Fire and Ice event?”
“Yeah, this is the right room.” The two of you surveyed the empty room before he said. “It’s just the event is tomorrow.” With those words he walked into the back room.
“They gave you the wrong date?” Tyler shrugged.
“They must have, though I was almost positive they told us today.”
“Well Andrea and Alandra got ready with me, so they must think it’s today too. I should call them.” You flipped open your purse to search for your phone.
“Babe, they’re probably already on their way here. Why don’t you just dance with me right now?”
You look at him curiously. “Huh?”
“Come on, you look so beautiful in that dress and this room looks amazing. I just want to dance with you.” He already grabbed your hand and was leading you out to where the dance floor was.
“But there’s no music.”
“We don’t need any.” He wrapped you up in his arms and started to hum lightly. The tune sounded vaguely familiar, though you couldn’t quite place it. You found yourself, swaying in his arms. He swept you into a grand turn, and soon you were twirling around the floor, to the light lilt of the piano. Piano, where did that come from? The two of you continued to dance, when suddenly you heard a voice break in.
You steady me, slow and sweet we sway, take the lead and I will follow.
Finally ready now. To close my eyes and just believe that you won’t lead me where I don’t go.
When my faith gets tired and my hope seems lost.
You spin me round and round and remind me of that song,
The one you wrote for me,
And we dance…Oh we dance.
You looked up into Tyler’s smiling face. “I know this song.”
“You should, you sang it for months after we went to your cousin’s wedding.” It was true, the melody had stuck in your head and you would sing it when you were in the shower, or out in the kitchen getting dinner ready. But that was at least nine months ago, and you never thought Tyler was paying attention.
“Where did the music come from?”
He shrugged nonchalantly, but you could tell by the smirk on his face he had done this. “Just dance with me baby.” He twirled you again and you were lost in the rhythm of the music and the thrill of being in Tyler’s arms.
And I’ve been told, to pick up my sword and fight for love.
Little did I know that love had won for me.
Here in your arms, you steal my heart again,
and I breathe you in like I’ve never breathed till now.
When my faith gets tired and my hope seems lost.
You spin me round and round and remind me of that song,
The one you wrote for me,
And we dance, oh, we dance.
Oh, oh we dance.
Oh, oh, oh we dance
Just you and me.
The words of the song had always resonated with you, but never more so then in that moment. Just being in his arms moving around the dance floor, made you lose your heart all over again to him. As you looked up at his brilliant smile, he stole your breath away. It was just the two of you in that moment, and you knew then and there, that this was the only man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. Not that you hadn’t had this thought before, it was just all clear now. You’d walk to the ends of the earth for this man, for you knew he’d do the same for you.
And I will lock eyes with the one who’s ransomed me.
The one who gave me joy from mourning.
And I will love eyes with the one who’s chosen me.
The one who set my feet to dancing.
Oh we dance,
Oh we dance, we dance.
Oh we dance
Just you and me.
Suddenly you wished you could bottle this moment and keep it with you forever, as you heard the words of the song coming to a close, for you didn’t want it to end. The two of you had been in the darks depths a relationship could go, but somehow you’d both fought and found the light; and now that you had everything in the world seemed perfect. You just wanted to stay in this dance with him for the rest of your life.
The voice faded but the music continued as Tyler swayed back and forth with you in his arms. That’s when you noticed on stage there was a grand piano along with string quartet that you never noticed because you were so wrapped up dancing with the man you love. He slowed the two of you to a stop as the music played softly in the background; then he reached and entwined your hands together.
“It’s only been a little over a year since I met you here, you know that?” You nodded your head, unsure of where this conversation was going. “But I knew that night, that someday I’d be standing in front of you just like I am now.” Goosebumps started to skate up your arms at his words. “This place is pretty special to us, because not only did we first meet here, it brought us back together…well that and this little one right here.” His eyes drifted to your concealed baby bump and you both smiled. His grip on your hands tighten as he continued. “I don’t tell you this near enough, but I love you (Y/N). There is no one else in this world for me.” Your eyes started to tear, as he professed his love for you. “When you left me…as you should have.” A small laugh escaped you. “I thought I was going to die. I knew then that I didn’t want to live a life without you in it. It was like I couldn’t even breathe because you weren’t beside me.” The tears you’d been struggling to hold back, started to fall freely now. He unlaced one of your hands and with his thumb brushed them away. “Stop babe, or you’re gonna make me cry too.” Through your weeping eyes, you could just see him trying to suppress his own tears.
He took a deep breath in. “Anyhow…I knew if you ever gave me a chance again, I wouldn’t mess it up this time…and I swear to God I never will.” You smiled at him, hopefully letting him know that you’d never lose faith in him again, like you had yesterday. “You’re my everything; do you know that.” It wasn’t really a question, more of a statement; but you knew then and there that he was your all as well. “You’re my home, my shelter, the one I want to run to not only in the bad, but in the good as well. But most of all you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.” You squeezed his hands back hoping to convey the words you couldn’t speak at the moment. “I realized in this last year that nothing, not hockey, not the money, not the house, none of it means anything; if I don’t have you to share it with. I love you with my whole being.” He dropped to one knee then, tears streaming down not only your face, but one or two fell from his. You swear your heart stopped beating. He let go of your one hand again and searched in his inside suit pocket. Franticly you swiped at the tears falling down your face, for you wanted to look into Tyler’s eyes without any obstruction.
“I know I don’t deserve you (Y/N), but if you’ll have me, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want us to be a family in every sense of the word.” He flipped open the jewelry case and in it lay the most exquisite diamond ring you’d ever laid eyes on. “(Y/F/M/L/N) would you do me the greatest honor I’ve ever had in my life, and marry me?” You were nodding yes, through a stream of tears now, as you tried to find your voice.
“Yes, Ty, Yes.”
He didn’t give you time to say anything more. He placed the ring on your shaking hand and then in one swift motion, he rose from the floor, lifting you off your feet at the same time. He kissed you then, and you melted into his arms; kissing him back pouring all the love you had for him into it. Reluctantly he pulled back. “Did you really just say yes?”
Again, you nodded your head up and down. “Of course I said yes. Ty I love you so much. There is no one in this world I’d rather spend the rest of my life with, then you.” He still had you swept off your feet, and you had a feeling it would be that way from now until the end of time. You locked your eyes with his. “I can’t believe I get to be Mrs. Seguin, or that you did all this.”
“I can’t wait to call you my wife, but there’s more.” You weren’t entirely sure you heard him correctly, so you quirked an eyebrow at him. “You guys can come out now.” He placed you on your feet, as the doors to the adjacent room opened and out came rushing all your family and friends.
“Oh my god!” To say you were surprised was an understatement. They were all clapping and yelling congratulations. Your parents were the first at your side, enveloping you in a huge hug and offering you their congratulations. You were vaguely aware that Tyler’s whole family was doing the same to him. Two little hands latched on to your dress and you looked down to see your niece Rylynn holding on to you tightly. You lifted her up on your hip and she planted a kiss on your cheek.
“Does this mean I get to be in your wedding?”
You couldn’t help but laugh at her little request. “Of course you can sweetie. You’ll be the best flower girl there ever was.”
“Yipee”
Matt came over and took his joyful daughter out of your hands, while at the same time placing a kiss on your cheek. “Congratulations sis. That man is really in love with you.”
“Oh my god, everything he said to you was so sweet.” Melissa added as she dabbed her eyes, through your hug.
“Wait, you guys heard that?”
“Yep, and watched it too.” Sean added leaning to offer his congratulation.
“But how?”
“That’s a question you’re going to have to ask your fiancé.” Jessica told you.
“I might have an idea how it happened. Congratulations bestie!” Your best friend Jenna added as she squeezed you.
“Wait, did you help him with this?”
“Me and a bunch of others, but there’s a microphone in that chandelier right there.” You looked up to find it, glancing through the sparkling crystals, trying to find the tiny device. “There’s also hidden cameras all over here. And while there was a bunch of us that helped, it was all Tyler’s idea.”
You gave Jenna one more hug, and thanked her for everything. There were still tons of people around wanting to wish you well, but you needed to say somethings to your fiancé. He wasn’t more than five feet from you, so you turned towards him. Automatically, his arm went around your waist to draw you close to him. Standing on your tip-toes you reached up and planted a chaste kiss on his cheek. His mom was still standing there. “I’m so happy for you two. You’re just so perfect.” She was crying as she grabbed you and hugged you hard. Softly she whispered in your ear, so only you could hear her. “Thank you for loving my baby boy. I know that it hasn’t been easy at times, but I couldn’t ask for anyone better for him to spend the rest of his life with than you.” More tears came rushing down at her words.
You couldn’t find the words to tell her how much what she just said meant. Finally you whispered back, “I promise to love him with all I have.” She released you then, only to be replaced by Candace and Cassidy. In that moment you realized, you weren’t going to get a moment alone with Tyler until later in the night. Both his sisters were so happy, for you; and you couldn’t be more excited to have them as your actual sisters soon.
Jamie, was the next person to find you, kissing your cheek in congratulations; before he slapped his best friend on the back. “So, he’s finally going to make an honest woman out of you; about time Seggy, because I was all ready to swoop in.”
“Don’t even think about it Chubbs, she’s definitely spoken for now.” Tyler held up your left hand to show him the ring, while you just shook your head in laughter. It was one person after the next for the following hour, wishing both you and Tyler well. It wasn’t until you were back on the dance floor, alone in Tyler’s arms before you got a chance to ask him the question you’d been dying to know, since talking to your best friend.
“Ty, I can’t believe you did all this for me? Jenna said there are even cameras somewhere around here. How in the world did you do this?”
“Well it wasn’t easy, but it was worth it; you’re worth it.” You knew that none of this would’ve been easy to pull off and you couldn’t wait to hear how he did it all.
Growing Pains - Chapter Four - My Office. NOW.
I arrived at LFG the next day at 8 am, way before everybody else did. I went to the CEO’s office and left an envelope on top of his desk, with my resignation letter inside.
I brewed some coffee, and grabbing a cup for myself, I sat on my laptop and worked on the pending things I had to do for the week. Whoever would take my work, would have no problem picking up the pace if I left things organized.
I was so absorbed in my task I didn’t even notice all the other people coming in. I also didn’t notice Victor’s arrival, so it came as a surprise to see Victor’s message on the company communication channel.
My office. NOW.
I knocked on the glass door and heard a dry “come in”. Victor was sitting at his desk, my resignation letter in his hand.
“You called?” I said, my voice emotionless.
“Explain this.” His tone was severe, angry even, as he threw the letter on the desk with contempt.
“Not much to explain, it’s my resignation letter.” I said, my cold eyes meeting his fiery ones.
“Is it now?” His tone was of scorn. “Here’s what I think about your resignation letter.” He took the letter from the table and slowly ripped it to pieces. I was astonished, not believing my own eyes. That man had some nerve. Suddenly he got up, and although he wasn’t loud or aggressive, I was startled all the same. I could hear my heartbeat in my eardrums.
“Tomorrow morning a car will be picking you up at 6:30 in the morning. You will be ready for it at 6: 29, so you won’t cause any delays. You’ll pack a bag for a two-day trip, including dresses for business dinners. You said you wanted to learn, here is your chance, I will teach you. Tomorrow, you’ll sit with me at the grown-ups table.” His grey eyes were menacing and icy, defying me to retort or refuse. Seeing him like this, I simply couldn’t. I just stood there and took all of his fury, unable to move a muscle. He paused for a moment, watching my reaction, and continued.
“Goldman will send you my schedule for the next two days, which you will memorize like it was your own name. You’ll also come prepared with all the information required about the companies I am going to visit, including reports on your analysis of the present reality for those companies, and what actions should be taken to protect the investments. And you will not fail or disappoint me, or I will personally make sure you will never work in finances again, here or in any other place. Understood?”
He spat the threat like it was coming from the deepest darkest pit inside him, and it fell on me like a double punch on my gut. I remained silent, knowing that I couldn’t possibly say no to him. I wasn’t pleased with the whole situation, but I wasn’t stupid enough to face the angry bear now. I had poked him, after all.
“Yes. Anything else, sir?” I said, my expression emotionless, the word sir coming out sourer than I intended.
His eye twitched, and for a nanosecond, it seemed this was as hard for him as it was for me, a glint of discomfort in his eyes. Clearly wishful thinking. He sat down and picked a file, and spoke to me while reading it. It was clearly his way to show despise.
“Yes. Later today you will have a desk placed in my office. You will be working with me closely, taking all the tasks I give you. You will be here when I arrive, and you will only leave when I tell you to leave. I will be demanding and most likely ill-tempered, but you’ll take it like an adult, since I will be teaching you everything I know. In return, I expect from you nothing less than excellence.”
I couldn’t believe this was happening, but I wouldn’t relent. I asked to be taught, didn’t I? If I played my cards right, I could profit greatly from all the knowledge he had to offer. I didn’t know if the CEO was pushing me to be better or if it was just punishment for being sassy, but I wouldn’t lose the opportunity to get my hands dirty and learn something worth the trouble.
Seeing Victor was already busy with his own work, not even caring to finish the conversation, I excused myself and went to my desk. Ted was waiting by my chair, his expression worried.
“What the hell happened? You’re pale as a ghost.” He asked, worried.
“Victor will be supervising me now. I will move to his office soon.” I said, my body feeling tired as all the tension slowly left it.
“Did he say why?”
“Not really.” I lied. “I think he wasn’t pleased with my reports.”
“Are you keeping any of my accounts? You were working on them, will Victor be supervising them too?” Ted seemed worried, maybe because he felt his efficiency was on trial as well.
“I don’t know, Ted. He’s your buddy, go ask him yourself.”
Ted didn’t lose any time. He went straight to Victor’s office. I just sat at my desk and went back to work, not minding what was happening there.
I opened my email to find I already had an email from Goldman with the schedule for the two-day trip. I printed it and put it beside me, starting to research about the companies we would be visiting.
I was so busy with my own work I didn’t notice the time pass me by, the busy energy of the company acting only as a background noise. I was startled by someone tapping me on the shoulder. It was Diane.
“Oh sweetie, I noticed you just came back from Victor’s office. You don’t look so good. We’re going to grab something to eat. Would you like to join us?” She said, smiling. Diane was a tall blonde with piercing blue eyes, and a voice so calm it could literally put you to sleep. She was one of the best workers in LFG, constantly praised by Victor but especially by Goldman, that seemed to like and respect her deeply. It was no surprise though, her heart being as big as her brains, and her attitude always positive and wise, making it extremely difficult not to like her.
I looked at the clock, it was one pm. But I still had a lot of work to cover. I was about to say no, when a man approached me.
“Hey, you’re Andrea, right? I’m Lenny. I’m here to move your things to the CEO’s office while you have lunch.” Lenny extended his hand for me to shake.
“Actually, I still have work to do…” I said, not wanting to leave my desk at all. Victor would be arriving from his lunch break soon, and I was pretty sure he would dump all kinds of tasks on me. And I still wasn’t done with what I had started in the morning.
“20 minutes, that’s all I ask. You’ll be doing me a solid, if the CEO arrives to see I still haven’t done what he asked me to, I’ll be in trouble.”
“Come with us, Andrea, we won’t take long, I have a lot to do too. You grab some lunch and relax a little, you’ll be more productive when you return.” Diane chimed in.
“20 minutes.” I turned to Lenny. “And make sure everything is working properly, I can’t lose any more time than the much I’m giving you.”
Lenny agreed and I went with Diane and some other people to this salad bar we often went to. We sat with our lunch, the others engaged in conversation, me and Diane eating silently. That is, until Diane broke the silence.
“So… Do you want to talk about what happened? Goldman was in his office when he opened your letter. He said he has never seen him so angry.”
“Well, the report presentation went incredibly sour yesterday. I thought he was going to fire me, so I quit. To save myself the humiliation. He didn’t take it too well.” I blurted out. I didn’t want to, but I needed to tell somebody.
“Went sour how?”
“Well, he called me an idiot… And I called him a bully. And he is a bully, Diane. I never had any complaints until yesterday, but I see how he treats people. Like he is the only smart person in the room. You’re close to Goldman, you know how nervous he gets. Life can’t be easy for him.” I tried to defend myself, although I knew I wasn’t very nice to Victor either.
“Ok… But he didn’t fire you. You’re moving your stuff to his office.” Diane stated, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
“He’s my supervisor now and he wants me to work closely with him. Probably to make me trip and add to my humiliation.” I sighed.
“I’ve known Victor for a while now. Goldman and I have been in the company for at least 7 years working close to him. And he’s not what he seems, Andy. He gives off the cold vibe but he’s actually a very kind and honorable person. It’s hard for him to let people in, I think. Do you know how Goldman started working at LFG?”
I shook my head, giving her my undivided attention.
“He was in a very bad place when he applied. He was practically homeless, he had lost his parents recently, nobody would hire him. He applied to work as a receptionist. Victor interviewed him, for some reason.” Diane paused to sip her drink. “When Victor asked him why someone with an Economics degree was applying as a receptionist, he told him his troubles. Victor not only hired him, but he did it as his assistant. And for a while, LFG paid the rental of a small apartment so Goldman could save some money and get himself back on his feet. And Victor taught him everything he needed to know about the job, making him his right arm. Victor didn’t need to do that.”
I pondered for a moment, thinking about how he helped me with my car trouble. Although it was a very uncomfortable experience, he was nothing but a gentleman. But that man was a very different man from the man threatening me in his office.
“He seems to be two very different people.” I said, concluding the conversation, not wanting to talk about it anymore.
“Well, since you are working with him, here’s a piece of advice. Don’t let his standoffish act fool you. Give him the benefit of the doubt.”
I nodded. Maybe he wasn’t all that bad. I sure hoped so, since I would be in close vicinity for the next few months.
I ran to the office to finish my work. My desk was already set on Victor’s office. Fortunately, he was still on his lunch break, so I sat and put on my earphones, resuming my work, my focus solely on my screen, the music blocking exterior stimuli. I worked fast and furiously for a while, my mind speeding through the process, when my concentration was broken by the sight of a tie next to my screen. I could only imagine the scolding I would get if the CEO had been there for long talking to me and I didn't listen.
“Sorry for the earphones. I needed to focus. Do you need anything?” I asked him.
“Do you have your reports ready? Did you gather all the information regarding the companies?”
“Almost ready. It’ll be finished in half an hour.” I answered.
“Let’s hope the quality of your work surpasses your efficiency, which is seriously lacking. A toddler could do it in half the time.” He said, sitting down at his desk.
I sighed. Who told me to be that straightforward to the guy and call him a bully?
“Did you have lunch?” I heard his voice again.
“Yes, I took a quick break and ate.”
“Rule number one in this office: No matter how busy you are, you take a break to eat and drink.”
“Understood.”
“The last thing I need is the intern to pass out from hunger and make a fool of herself in my office.”
This was going to be hell. I could feel it. Way to go, Andrea, you missed a perfectly good opportunity to be quiet.
Fate ep 3, first half
They should’ve just changed everybody’s names. I like Terra but she’s nothing like Flora... but Aisha and Musa are nothing like themselves either and Stella is the polar opposite. Bloom is the only one with anything like her own personality and that’s ‘cause “destiny-ridden protagonist” is a pretty universal personality.
But let’s dive back into the show we do have!
When we left our heroine, Bloom had gone all white-eyed! Looks like she’s having a vision of her own birth! Hospital monitors and whatnot, then an old lady leans into view and says, “When the time comes, find me.” Well that was proof you’re a destiny-ridden protagonist if ever I saw it!
So it’s still evening of day 3. Counting days is important.
Aisha asks Bloom what happened and Bloom says, ‘I think I just saw the fairy that left me in the human world.”
Opening sequence!
On the way to class, with backpacks and books. Aisha is wearing a very acceptable teal snakeskin-print outfit. Bloom’s in a red shirt. Bloom stops to look at the alumni photos on the walls, trying to recognize the fairy from her vision. Aisha is unimpressed with this plan, which I think is pretty sensible. The most powerful fairies come through Alfea and this fairy was powerful enough to easter-egg a memory in Bloom’s head for sixteen years. Bloom of course hopes this fairy can lead her to her birth parents. Aisha just doesn’t want Bloom to get her hopes up. Clearly aisha does not recognize the signs of protagonistness.
Outside it’s cloudy and all the specialists are doing their martial arts stuff. Silva’s looking remarkably healthy for someone who was extremely poisoned yesterday! He corrects some students, and Sky and Riven put on a great show. Props to the actors and choreography people! Riven fights with two swords, and he dumps Sky on the mat at the end.
...nope, it’s been a week since the attack. It is now day ten and the boys are worried about their teacher. And so am I, if Burned One poison is always deadly how is Silva still up and about? And after the way he described his father dying of it he seems the type to totally take his own way out. I wonder if he’ll survive to the final battle in episode 6 and heroically sacrifice himself, that’d fit.
There’s Stella wearing pastel pink and a skirt the real Stella might almost put on. And a sweater and scarf. I wonder how much of the costume choices are just because it’s quite possibly really dang COLD in Ireland and they don’t want the cast to suffer. They also could be trying for an otherworldly feel by having the clothes be unfashionable but that’s a very strange choice.
Stella has given no thought to poor Silva and thinks he’s fine, only “Are you training later or are we hanging out before the party?” Sky also infodrops that Burned Ones are like vampires and if they kill the one that tagged him Silva will survive.
So either there’s two Burned Ones or Aisha didn’t kill the one she pinned to the tree. I guess they didn’t mention to Dowling that they went out and pinned a Burned One to a tree.
Anyway Stella kisses Sky, who barely notices ‘cause he’s worried for his mentor’s life, and goes to class. Riven starts guessing why Sky took up with Stella again and assumes it’s ‘cause Stella does kinky stuff. Riven giggles like a twelve year old at the thought and Sky pushes him off the bench. Then in a more mature moment Riven pretty much says ‘I'm there for you’ on the whole Silva thing.
I have this suspicion that we’re gonna find out Sky and Stella aren’t having sex, that Sky is trying to help Stella with her magic behind closed doors. Sky’s vibe is so unseduced.
Classroom scene! Potions, I’d guess by the flasks on the desks. 16 students at 8 desks in a very skinny room with Dowling at her desk at the end. The teaching is specific to each student though. Terra blooms a dandelion. Musa’s instruction is to focus on one thought. Bloom has a little pile of twigs and is instructed to light one and keep the fire from spreading to the rest. She says it’s impossible, but then manages. Beatrix just has a little fizz of lightning. She snarks Dowling a little and Bloom and Beatrix share a look. Aisha lifts a sphere of water but when Dowling instructs her to separate drops, the whole thing falls splashing Aisha and Bloom. It seems like she should be able to just un-wet them but I guess not. Class over, Aisha heads off for a swim. Beatrix senses weakness and smirks.
In the greenhouse Silva is getting treatment. Poor guy’s got a great rotting crater in his back with black veins spreading from it. Ouch!
Harvey goes out to get something and Terra’s outside waiting to ask how Silva’s doing. Harvey lies and says he’s fine, and praises terra again for the brave rescue. Terra catches on, ‘You can tell me. I’m not a little kid anymore.” but her dad doesn’t tell her, just kisses her hair and heads off on his errand. T
Terra’s left looking at her reflection in the greenhouse glass.
Beatrix and Callan plot. No luck getting through the barrier in Dowling’s secret passage. They have this chat while walking in the gallery above the cafeteria in public. Callan says they shouldn’t be seen together and Beatrix goes with, “everyone’ll just think you’re perving on me.” and calls Callan a pedo. She shoves him off and twirls right to Riven, who in a charming-slash-weird display, chomps an apple then leans down so Beatrix can bite the apple still in his mouth.
Terra is as baffled by this as I am. Dane describes Beatrix as a huge nerd who can recite the entire history of the Otherworld in between bong hits. So bongs exist in fairyland, and also dowling does a really bad job at keeping her students off drugs. Maybe she needs more than 3 staff members.
Anyway Riven invited Dane to the party and Terra is shocked and clearly territorial/protective over Dane.
At their table Musa and Bloom are talking about Aisha’s failure in class. Turns out Bloom’s parents call her at two in the morning because that’s a sensible hour Switzerland time and it wakes the whole dorm up!
Terra comes over to incoherently ask why Beatrix the history nerd is getting action while she can’t keep Dane’s attention away from a jerk like Riven. She doesn’t say that with words but that’s the real question.
Off in the background Sam catches Musa’s eye and holds up snacks, inviting her to come share. Musa picks cute boy over awkward conversation.
Terra deflates. “I know why really. ‘Cause she drinks and smokes and looks like her and I’m… sorry. How are you?” and Terra turns the conversation to Bloom’s search for the old lady in her memory. Which leads to yearbooks to how Silva is to if Sky’s ok to Terra basically saying, “Sky is a great guy but Stella will straight up murder you if you look at him.” to Stella staring at them from another table. Bloom says she’s just worried about Sky and Terra says, “Ok.” realizing Bloom does not grasp the gravity of the Stella murder situation.
Sky arrives in the greenhouse where Silva is putting his shirt on after another treatment. They talk, Sky offers to take over some teaching so Silva can rest. The army is tracking the Burned One but Silva is running out of time. He starts the ‘my final wishes’ thing but Sky is more interested in how to fix things. But for soldiers, final wishes are as fixed as things can get. Sky says, “I already lost one father.” so Andreas is indeed dead.
Cut to Stella hangin’ with the minor fairies! they’re gossiping about the soldiers! “hot Marco” is leading them, they’ll get that Burned One no problem. Stella looks relieved. She’s not actually heartless.
Cut to a sign that says “18 Winx Suite’ there it is, the word.
Bloom looks through yearbooks. Aisha tries to waterbend with no luck. So little luck that she asks Bloom how the search is going.
We see a page of yearbook with names including “Ranger Colly” “Sparta West ‘Red’” “Devon Waller” Maybe the one nicknamed ‘Red’ is Bloom’s mom? Also a little sad that they didn’t stick in the names of a few of the minor fairies, it would’ve been such a tiny thing so few fans would’ve caught it, but it would have cost them nothing.
Bloom has an idea! She had the vision after using lots of magic, so maybe if she goes to the stone circle and draws on lots of magic again she’ll get back in touch!
Aisha knows a bad idea when she hears one.
They are interrupted by Terra calling from the bathroom, she tried to do a cat eye and failed in floods of eyeliner. Bloom and Aisha rescue her and Musa comes into this strange scene as Terra tells them, “I need full suite support, we’re gonna go show everyone we’re cool and fun...” the girls crowd in front of the mirror and smile.
This is exactly the kind of scene where the real Stella could have shone, sweeping in to make Terra look amazing... but the Stella we have is in Sky and Riven’s room doing her makeup because sharing the mirror with firsties is a nightmare, as Riven pours booze into his flask in preparation for the same bullying he pulled on Dane at the last party.
Wait, a party every ten days? That is the most Winx Club thing about this show! Hah!
Also the “there’s not enough staff to keep the students from abusing substances” is gonna be the new “the Winx band needs security guards” innit. Sigh.
Riven brings the truth bomb: “If everyone around you is a nightmare, it’s not them.”
Stella wants a sip, but Sky isn’t drinking. Stella thinks she knows why, she turns to reassure him, “Marco is on the Burned One. As in, badass Marco? Strongest fairy in a decade?” But Sky’s still not drinking. I get such a vibe that Sky is getting his life straight, growing beyond Stella while she remains a bundle of needs and fears. Of course Bloom is ALSO a bundle of needs and fears so I’m not sure how that’ll work out.
We go to Badass Marco himself, out on rolling green fields. He and his team are reporting in by radio: they’ve tracked the Burned one up to a river, which may stop it. Burned Ones have difficulties with large bodies of water. They should have killed it by morning. Back at Alfea Dowling says they may not have ‘til morning. She and Silva, whose eyes are white-ing over but still seems himself, are tracking progress on a map. Marco and his team move out. I want to know more about this battalion, Marco’s second is a woman with sort hair who seems to be named Laura, Harvey says her name as he comes to join the other two. They’re in the cafeteria under the arches. Harvey pours shots all ‘round. They wish they could be out in the action, not babysitting while their former students face danger. Marco and Laura are the best of the best but have never faced a Burned One.
Then Harvey mentions “the specialists’ annual debauched kegger.”
Silva: “I imagine they think we don’t know.”
Dowling: “I imagine they think you didn’t start it.”
Ok, I adore these three. Mixed feelings about the teenagers with familiar names but all three of the adults seem such solid characters.
...and with that revelation, I need a break from reviewing. Got a sewing experiment to take apart and put back together, so we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if Badass Marco and his team survive or if the first-year students have to take over!
@ohmygoodnesslesbians I love this AU fanfic! This is a great continuation of the Darla chapter! REALLY want to know what happens next!
***
Ok so this an au continuation of the bonus chapter where Patience had Darla instead of Andrea. This also includes the au where Vittoria, Leo and Patience's daughter teams up with Darla, Salvatore and Patience's daughter to replace their fathers as Don's of their respective Families. Hope you like it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tires squealed outside.
The sound of a car door slamming could be heard from the small dining room table Vittoria Borghese and Darla Mallozzi now sat.
Darla’s heart quickened. Her pop wasn’t supposed to be home until after sundown.
Before either she or her half sister could move the front door was thrown open.
“I need your help.” Simone Winslow said bluntly.
Her car was still running outside. In the back seat lay a dead body.
Simone Mallozzi, now going by Simone Winslow, had planned on spending the day in her apartment, picking up while her girlfriend Geraldine Abelman was away at a special lecture from some famous sculpture halfway across the city. That had been, of course, before she stepped outside and found a dead man on her stoop.
The bloody note pinned neatly to the man’s jacket lapel read “To the daughter of Patience, I know who you are and what your game is. Careful now.”
Right after Simone got done vomiting on the sidewalk and hyperventilating, She dragged the dead man into the back seat of her car and stepped on it.
Vittoria soothingly rubbed circles into the back of Simone’s hand while Darla paced back and forth.
The TV from the living room could be heard in the background. Giovanna Mallozzi, the youngest of Patience and Salvatore’s three daughters, was blythely watching an old movie and sticking her little freckled nose out of her sisters business.
Darla stopped her pacing and reread the note. It was written in a neat and educated Italian hand. It had to be from the Borghese family. It had to be.
But who? Who found out about Vittoria and Darla’s plot?
“I know a place we can bury the body.” Vittoria offered in a calm and cool tone.
Darla didn’t know how she could always manage it.
Calm and Cool.
Nothing like Darla’s memories of their shared mother. Patience was always yelling and fighting and frothing at the mouth. Patience was like Gia. Patience was like Darla.
Patience was not like Vittoria.
Calm and Cool.
“Where is it now?” Simone asked. Her doe brown eyes stared blankly at the table.
Vittoria continued to massage her limp hand.
Calm and Cool.
“I stuffed it under the porch. We need to get rid of it before Pop gets home.” Darla replied.
Salvatore Mazzoli was not an understanding man. It had been a huge risk bringing Vittoria here in the first place. A mistake. That risk and that mistake were now amplified beyond belief now that there was a body that needed to disappear underneath the porch. Not to mention Miss Loud Mouth in the living room had witnessed the whole thing. Giovanna was 14 and had the sense of a rock. Knowing her she’d tell the whole neighborhood that there was a dead body under her porch.
“We should examine it again. Any clues as to who left the body are vital.” Vittoria said.
The TV volume lowered.
“Hey Darla?” Gia’s voice called from the room over.
“Yeah?” Darla tirely replied.
Simone shuddered a bit and Vittoria patted her shoulder.
“So, I know the dead guy like wasn’t here earlier and all, but do you think Andrea might have seen who dropped it off?”
All three girls straighten their backs.
“Andrea?!” Simone demanded from her seat. “Andrea who?!”
Gia’s groan of annoyance was easy to hear even from the room over.
“You know. Andrea? Our brother?” Gia replied.
Darla made eye contact with Vittoria.
Andrea?
The half brother who Vittoria was trying to replace as heir to the Borghese family?
It answered the question of who knows about Vittoria and Darla’s alliance.
But what was he doing with Gia?
“He’s really nice. He told me that my eyes reminded him of mom, which was kind of weird but I think he meant it as a compliment. He took me out for ice cream after.” Gia prattled on, oblivious to her sister’s frozen state of panic.
Simone shot up from her seat and marched to the living room, her face purpling with rage. Vittoria stood and she and Darla quickly made their way to follow her.
By the time they reached the living room, Simone had hauled Gia up by her long black twin braids and was screaming in her face.
“Do you have any idea of how dangerous what you today was? What kind of idiot are you? You don’t go out for ice cream with fucking strangers!” Simone howled. She shook shook Gia and pulled at her long curly hair. For once Gia’s expression looked properly afraid.
Darla lunged forward and put herself between her sisters.
“You! You’re just as fucking bad Darla! You and your little fucking quest! Trying to replace dad as Don! You should be ashamed. Not only have you put us all in fucking danger you’ve dragged Gia and I into it. I hope you’re very proud of yourself.” Simone seethed.
She shoved Darla away and stormed out of the room.
“And take care of the fucking body!” Simone yelled before slamming the door behind her.
Darla let out a long exhale.
“Ow.” Gia mumbled as she rubbed her head.
Vittoria shook her head..
“Well, we can go dispose of the body, now that we know who left it at Simone’s.” Vittoria surmised.
Gia shot her a confused look. “Wait, you found it at Simone’s?” Giovanna asked.
Vittoria raised a perfectly arched eyebrow. “Yes.” She replied in a seeking tone.
That only seemed to confuse Gia more. “Well then Andrea couldn’t have seen who left it after all. Is that why Simone got all mad?”
Vittoria opened her mouth and then seemed to think better of it. She gave Darla a meaningful look as she exited the room.
Darla’s shoulders slumped. It had been a really long time since she had seen Simone so upset. Not since Darla had told her Mom didn’t care about them had her sister turned so red.
She would have to find a way to apologize to Simone later. Right now Darla needed to take care of Gia and go bury a body.
Darla put a hand on Gia’s shoulder. “Gia. I need you to listen very carefully. Do NOT tell Pop about the dead guy. If he gets back from the job before I do, distract him, but under no circumstances do you tell him about Simone or Vittoria or the dead guy, capisce?” Darla pressed.
Gia shrugged her off. “Yeah, Yeah, ok I get it. I’m not stupid Darla, I can handle talking to dad y’know.”
Darla didn’t reply. She followed Vittoria out of the house to pack the body into her car.
It was a peaceful scene.
Salvatore Mazzoli and his youngest daughter Gia were watching a baseball game. Gia had really liked baseball ever since she read about the The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
She’s sitting cuddled up against her Papa’s side. She could smell gasoline,smoke and cigarettes on his shirt, a combination she associated with safety and warmth.
Papa had just gotten done with a hard job and is enjoying the evening with his baby girl.
Gia wasn’t sure what the job was, only that it was hard and Papa didn’t want to talk about it. He told her as much when he asked her to fetch him a beer.
They watch quietly together.
Someone makes a home run.
They both get a kick out of it. Gia shouted and jumped up with glee while Papa only grinned at her.
Salvatore ruffles her hair.
“That must have been something to see, eh Gia? Sitting in the front row.” Papa asks her.
His voice has a comforting rumble to it that made Gia snuggle closer to him.
She hums in agreement.
It would have been really cool to see that in person.
Suddenly, in a moment of terrible word association and recollection, Gia saw fit to share something else with her father.
“Hey, Andrea said he’d take me to a baseball game sometime.If I’m a good girl and all that stuff. Maybe I’ll get to see something really cool, like the ball landing in someone's face!” Giovanna chattered excitedly.
Salvatore stiffens and the temperature drops.
Giovanna notices neither of these things.
“Who’s this Andrea? He from the neighborhood boy?” Salvatore asks. He doesn’t like the idea of some boy trying to pry a date out of his little Gia. She’s just a baby for crying out loud, she doesn’t need boys trying to take her out.
“Oh, no Papa. He’s my half brother. He drops by school sometimes to talk to me. He’s kind of weird but he buys me stuff, so I guess he’s ok.”
Salvatore’s grip on his beer bottle is so tight his knuckles turn white. He stiffly stands up and leaves the room without another word.
Gia gives him a curious glance but otherwise turns her attention back to the TV.
Its soon after the yelling begins.
It’s about 12 o'clock in the morning. Darla has just returned from burying a dead body with Vittoria.
She returns to the house to hear her father roaring with rage on the phone in the other room. Gia is sitting on her stomach watching movies on tv.
“ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW? FUCKING FIND OUT!” Salvatore bellowed/
“What’s got Pop all excited?” Darla asked, a little annoyed she can’t go straight to bed. Darla spots blood on the sleeves of her sweater and quickly pulls it off. The last thing she needs is her father to see and start asking questions.
She hangs the garment over her arm and asks her little sister “What are you even still doing up?”
Gia is swinging her legs slowly and doesn’t turn from the TV.
“Papa’s mad because Andrea.” Gia replies casually.
The words turn Darla’s blood to ice. She sharply turns to face her sister.
“Andrea? What about Andrea?” Darla demands in a sharp tone. “Did he come back?”
Gia didn’t reply. She was to busy jealousy looking at the model in the commercial and her small bust. Gia looked down at her own chest with annoyance. She wished she had a flatter chest.
Darla marched over there and grabbed Gia’s chin, yanking her face to look at her. “Answer me!” Darla demanded.
Her anxiety skyrocketed by the minute. Did Andrea come back to the house? Did he hurt her? Did he touch her?
The evil possibilities of what her brother could have done. If he was any thing like what Vittoria said, he was capable of anything.
“Oooooowwe” Gia whined. She sat up and pushed Darla’s hand away.
“I just told him bout Andrea coming to see me at school.”
Darla blinked at Gia in disbelief.
“He’s been coming to your school?! Why didn’t you tell me earlier!” Darla cried.
Salvatore’s angry ranting from the other room increased in noise. “YOU GET THAT MOTHERFUCKER ON THE PHONE RIGHT NOW!” Salvatore railed.
“And why the hell did you tell Pop?!?” Darla shouted. This was just perfect. Great way to end a fucking fantastic day.
Gia just shrugged. “I dunno.” She mumbled. She fully directed her green gaze back to the TV.
Darla had never wanted to strangle her sister more than that moment.
It’s 4 am. Simone is peacefully sleeping with Gerry.
Simone came home,took a shower, and was relieved to find Geraldine back from her lecture. She was just the person Simone needed to see. They had a lovely date walking around the park. All the tension and horror of the afternoon melted away, leaving Simone feeling guilty for grabbing at Gia that way. Simone knew she hated getting wailed on by dad and she certainly wouldn’t want her sisters adding on to that. She’d have to apologize to Gia later. And giver her a talk about trusting strange men.
Simone had no trouble falling and staying asleep after coming home from her date and having back breaking sex with Gerry.
Or she would have been, if the phone hadn’t rang.
The shrill ringtone jolted Simone awake.
She groped her night stand and answered the phone.
“Hello?” She says into the phone blearily.
She is rewarded with her Pop screaming on the other line.
“DO YOU KNOW WHO ANDREA FUCKING BORGHESE IS? YOU KNOW WHY HE’S SHOWING UP AT YOUR FUCKING SISTERS SCHOOL? IS THIS YOUR MOTHERS DOING? HAS SHE BEEN AROUND AND YOU DIDN’T FUCKING TELL ME?” Salvatore shouted.
Simone had absolutely nothing to say to that.
“I don’t know anything about it. Call me back at a decent time.” Simone robotically replied.
She hung up and stared straight at her wall.
Oh shit.
The phone began to ring again.
Gerry sat up in bed. She rested her head on Simone’s shoulder and cupped her breast.
“Everything ok, doll face?” Her girl friend asked sleepily.
Simone couldn’t reply.
She was to preoccupied by what Pop’s knowledge of their brother meant for her. What it meant for Darla and Vittoria. And most importantly what it could mean for poor Gia.
The phone rang again.
Gerry turned to face it.
“Do you need to answer that?” She asked in a worried tone.
Simone snapped out of it.
“Yeah.” She replied dazedly. “Yeah maybe I should.”
Simone leaned to answer it and Gerry crawled back to her side.
“Hello?” Simone’s greeting was more hesitant then her last one.
“Oh thank god you answered.Look I know you’re pissed but Giovanna fucking told dad about Andrea. He’s been showing up to her fucking school, Mona. Vittoria isn’t answering, I’m losing it.” Darla’s stressed voice filtered through the phone.
The puzzle pieces were clicking in her head.
“Oh fuck.” Simone replied.
Darla began speaking again but Simone wasn’t listening.
“No, Darla, you don’t understand, Pop just called me in a uproar yelling about if I talked to Mom or if I knew who Andrea was. He, he thinks Mom is putting Andrea up to it, Darl. He doesn’t get it. You gotta make sure genius over there doesn’t fucking tell him either.” Simone insisted. Her heart sped up. She glanced at Gerry to see how much she heard. Thankfully, she had fallen back asleep.
Darla was worryingly quiet.
“Darl?” Simone asked.
Darla sighed.
“Yeah. No, you’re right. Pop can’t know. I’ll try and talk to Gia tonight.” Darla replied.
“And get a hold of Vittoria while your at it. She’s got as much at stake as you,and there’s gotta be something she can do about her creepy brother. I don’t like this guy following Gia around, I don’t care if he’s our brother. It’s weird”
“No,you're right. I’ll see if I can get a hold of Vittoria. I’ll call you back tomorrow.”
“Darla? Get some sleep while your at it. You’ll need it.” Simone said.
The dial tone rang out.
Simone hung up the phone and tried to call back asleep but couldn’t. Not with all this guess work for her brothers motivations floating around her head.
Maybe Pop had the right idea. Maybe Patience Winslow was the answer to this problem.
Which is better Italy or Cuba?
I will start of with talking about Italy, it is truly a beautiful country where there are many different places you can visit and have a good time for example like Venice and you can ride in a gondola. Or even going to Rome you will find lots of different pieces of history there. There is also good food you can get such as pasta or some nice refreshing gelato to cool you off after some sightseeing in the sun.
Italty has a mixed economy like the United States but it does lean more towards a free market system compared to here. With it being more of a free market economy is allows for the producers and consumers to have more control in what gets produced. Also since there is competition it makes it so that the consumers get the best product for a fair price. Another fact at about Italy is that there are a lot of privately own companies there such as the IRA. Some of the products they produce a lot of would be olive oil, tomatoes, rice, and wine. They export these items in order to make a profit. For the way of life in society is good overall for all the citizens and legal foreign residents are covered by Servizio sanitario nazionale, unlike healthcare here that not everyone has because it is to expensive.
Now on the other hand we have Cuba which is located in the Caribbean. Here you can be immersed into their vibrant culture and be surrounded by nature. It always has nice warm weather to make sure to stay hydrated at all times. Some places you can visit are Playa Paraiso, Old Havana, and Trinidad. Make sure to also bring lots of bathing suits and walking shoes to go on little adventures.
Then for some background information on Cuba and its economy. It has a mixed economy although it has sone down sides, such as economic freedom has decreased over the years and so has trade freedoms. For a long time Cuba used to be under communist dictatorship and some of those aspects still exist restricting the free market ideology. A lot of things are owned by government and private corporations. Another interesting fact is that it’s top exports are refined fuel, sugar, Tabasco, nickel, and other minerals. Like other countries they use this to their advantage to sell them to other countries that can not produce as much and then they make profit. For the way their healthcare works is that all clinics and hospitals are government owned so they can’t be private practices that citizen could not afford. Although there could be some improvements to their government and economy they are at a good spot.
So in the end I think that both are good places to visit for you can see lots of different things, although if I can to pick one I would go with Italy. I like their ideals of the free market system, and how it can give more freedom to the people. There are also lots of famous tourist attractions that are a must to visit once in your life. It is also very considerate how they give insurance to those who are even foreigner residents because you do not see that everywhere. Pack some light clothing and enjoy the summer sun in Italy!
Oppo R7s (Unlocked) Review
Sharengay Trang Tin Tức Độc Đáo VIDEO Oppo R7s (Unlocked) Review
The R7s is an unlocked phone that falls right between Oppo’s 6-inch R7 Plus and 5-inch R7 offerings. At 5.5 inches and $399 (32GB), it competes directly with the Editors’ Choice-winning Moto X Pure Edition and the OnePlus 2. That’s some stiff competition, though the R7s manages to hold its own thanks to a premium build, a high-quality display, and good battery life. But the Moto X Pure Edition and OnePlus 2 are stronger when it comes to performance and software, and remain better bets for the price.
Design, Display, and Features The overall look and feel of the Oppo R7s is vaguely reminiscent of the iPhone 6s Plus. There’s no physical home button, but the glass-clad front and metal unibody design bear a distinct resemblance to Apple’s popular device. The R7s measures 5.98 by 2.97 by 0.28 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.47 ounces. It’s easier to grip and lighter than both the Moto X (6.06 by 3.00 by 0.44; 6.31 ounces) and the OnePlus 2 (5.98 by 2.95 by 0.39 inches; 6.17 ounces).
I tested a gold R7s, but the phone is also available in silver and rose gold options. There’s a power button on the right, along with a slot that can take either two SIM cards or a SIM card and a microSD card. It accommodated our 200GB SanDisk card without any issue. The volume buttons are on the left, with a 3.5mm audio jack up top and a micro USB port and speakers at the bottom.
The R7s boasts a 5.5-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 AMOLED display with bright colors and good viewing angles. Images are crisp at 401 pixels per inch, the same pixel density as the OnePlus 2. The screen gets brighter than the Quad HD display on the Moto X Pure, though it isn’t as sharp (520ppi). The display supports gloved and wet touch input, which are welcome features in inclement weather.
Network Performance and Audio The R7s supports GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), WCDMA (850/900/1900/2100MHz), and LTE (1/2/4/7/17) bands. The device comes unlocked and works on AT&T and T-Mobile. You will get solid connectivity on AT&T due to the presence of Band 17, which allows for better signal penetration indoors. The phone is missing T-Mobile’s Band 12, which helps improve reception in congested cities. I tested the phone on AT&T and saw reliable connectivity and speeds in New York City, though nothing spectacular.
The R7s supports dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. There is no NFC, something the Moto X has, but not the OnePlus 2.
Voice calls sound good, and the phone handles background noise cancellation with ease. The bottom-facing speakers get loud, but lack bass. Wired and Bluetooth audio both sound fine.
Processor, Battery, and Camera The R7s is powered by a midrange Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, which is a step or two below the Snapdragon 808-powered Moto X and Snapdragon 810-powered OnePlus 2. This was confirmed in benchmark testing—the R7s received an AnTuTu score of 37,819, which is significantly less than the near-50,000 results from both the Moto X and OnePlus 2.
See How We Test Cell Phones
Despite the lower benchmark scores, the R7s feels fine in real-life performance, and its 4GB of RAM handles multitasking and app switching with ease. I was able to play games like Asphalt 8, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted without any lag or dropped frames.
Battery life on the R7s is excellent, thanks to a large 3,070mAh cell. The phone managed to last for an impressive 6 hours, 47 minutes in our battery rundown test, which streams full-screen video over LTE at max brightness. By contrast, the OnePlus 2 lasted 5 hours, 19 minutes, while the Moto X lasted 4 hours, 42 minutes. The R7s supports VOOC Flash Charge, which allows you to charge the device up to 90 percent in 50 minutes with the included charger.
The 13-megapixel rear-facing camera is fast and reliable. Autofocus locks on quickly, and auto exposure is able to make rapid adjustments to account for lighting changes. Pictures are clear with true-to-life colors and good detail. Most impressively, motion is relatively free from blur, even when taking multiple shots of a moving object. That’s a notable downside of the Moto X, which often blurs and tends to take softer images despite its higher-resolution sensor. The camera doesn’t do quite as well with low-light shooting, where it suffers from some grain and noise, but that’s a problem that all phone cameras struggle with.
The 8-megapixel selfie camera takes crisp shots in well-lit settings, but is prone to blurriness in low-light conditions. The R7s can also capture 1080p video at 30fps, which isn’t quite as impressive as the OnePlus 2 and the Moto X, which can both shoot 4K.
Software and Conclusions The R7s runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Oppo’s heavily customized Color OS 2.1 UI, drawing more influence from Apple’s iOS than from Google’s Material Design. All of the apps are arranged on the homescreen and there is no app drawer. The settings menus, camera interface, notification drawer, and icons are redesigned look more like Apple, which will likely not please fans of stock Android. Oppo is working on a custom AOSP ROM that will be available for the R7s in 2016. This will allow you to flash it without voiding the warranty, in order to get a stock Android experience.
There are some useful software features, like one-handed mode, which shrinks the screen so things are more easily reachable; and automatic memory cleanup, which closes and optimizes background processes after the phone is asleep for five minutes. There isn’t much bloatware outside of Oppo’s customizations, leaving you with 21.68GB of available storage. Combined with the microSD slot, storage shouldn’t be an issue.
Taken on its own, the Oppo R7s is a solid phablet with a nice build, a crisp display, good performance, long battery life, and a capable camera. But our top picks, the Moto X and the OnePlus 2 offer better combinations of software, hardware, and features. The Moto X has a sharper Quad HD display and a more powerful Snapdragon 808 processor. It also comes with optional Moto Maker customizations, and a mostly pure build of Android. The OnePlus 2, meanwhile, offers a USB-C port, a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 810 processor, and runs OxygenOS, which is a close-to-stock Android experience.
New Surroundings
I live for Percabeth fluff, especially when they’re all grown up. Here’s a oneshot about their kids (that no one asked for)
When they arrived at camp, Alexander and Sarah were pretty surprised that everyone wanted to be their friend.
Well, Sarah was surprised. Alex was loving the attention.
“Are your parents really Jason and Piper?” One child of Apollo asked him. Alex shrugged off the information nonchalantly.
“That’s so cool! It’s like the cutest love story ever!” A child of Aphrodite swooned, leaning over the table where Alex and Sarah were waiting for their parents to emerge from the Big House. “I heard that Piper didn’t even go break his heart even though he was her first boyfriend. That’s like, amazing.”
Sarah kept mostly to herself, staring at the Big House while Alex did all the talking. She was bright and hyper, sure, but Alex was always a lot better at handling crowds. Meanwhile, Sarah kept replaying the events of the past few hours over in her head. Her parents and Alex’s had fought some kind of bat-lady-thing. Her dad’s pen had turned into a sword, then back again. Jason had controlled the air. Piper and her mom had attacked with daggers. And now they had arrived at Camp Half-Blood where everyone was treating their parents as some sort of legends.
Her parents couldn’t be legends. They were so…not legendary?
Sarah thought back to Saturday mornings and waking up to blue waffles made by her dad, and how her mom would sip coffee out of her favorite mug while working on her laptop. She remembered reading the newspaper with her mom, and Annabeth’s warm smile when they had gone to the doctors and she was diagnosed with ADHD.
“No dyslexia?” Annabeth had pressed.
“Not that we can tell. Sometimes it skips a generation.” The doctor had answered. Annabeth and Percy had sighed in relief.
She always begged her parents to teach her Greek because she knew that they could read it, but her parents had insisted that it just came naturally to them. In exchange, they always had a hard time reading normal things, so it became a habit for Sarah to read the newspaper to them every morning.
Percy and Annabeth attended every one of Sarah’s soccer matches, and Percy baked blueberry muffins for the team after every win. Annabeth helped Sarah with crossword puzzles before school and always added a piece of paper with a riddle on it to her lunch box. Sarah would return home every afternoon with the answer.
Those were her parents. They weren’t legendary, or cool, or “heroes”. They were just normal old people.
Until suddenly they weren’t anymore. Now, Sarah tapped her leg as she became lost in thought. Were her parents keeping things from her?
The child of Apollo at the table with them gasped. “The Oracle just ran into the Big House! I think there’s a new prophecy!”
Alex turned to stare at the Big House with Sarah. Sarah had noticed a woman with frizzy red hair sprint barefoot and wearing overalls with paint splatters covering them, and she raised an eyebrow. “Who’s the Oracle?” She asked.
The daughter of Apollo nodded towards the woman sprinting into the Big House. “That’s Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Sometimes she glows green and can tell the future. Other times she paints.”
Sally caught the name. Aunt Rachel? Sarah was just at a new art exhibit her parent’s friend had opened, and she definitely did not remember any glowing green or speaking prophecies.
“There’s no way there’s a new prophecy already, Rebecca.” The child of Aphrodite chided, flipping her blue-highlighted hair. “It’s only been like, fifteen years since the last one.”
Rebecca stuck out her tongue. “There was a new prophecy that came out right after the Titan War, Andrea.” Rebecca pointed at Sarah as proof. “Her parents were there. Weren’t they, Sarah?”
Sarah was so lost in thought it took Alex shaking her to snap out of it. “Sorry, what?”
“Your parents” Rebecca repeated, her almond-toned eyes burning warmly with excitement. “Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. They were in the Titan War AND the Giant War, weren’t they?”
Sarah glanced at Alex, who looked just about as lost as her. Before Sally could answer, the Oracle kicked open the door of the Big House and stuck a finger out at Sarah and Alex.
Sally’s stifled a laugh. Rachel had her father by the ear, which was quite a sight.
“YOU DIDN’T THINK TO CALL ME ON THE WAY?” The woman was screaming. “PERCY JACKSON HOW IS THIS THE FIRST TIME YOU’VE BROUGHT HER TO CAMP AND YOU DIDN’T THINK TO WARN ME!?”
Percy groaned and swiped at the woman’s hand before rubbing his ear. “We were kind of busy getting here safely, Rachel!”
“I’VE BEEN WORRIED SICK!” She turned back to Sarah and her face changed to one of pure excitement. She waved with both arms as she cried out “HI SARAH HI ALEX”.
Sarah blinked before giving a sheepish smile and waving back. “Wow, Percy Jackson really is your dad.” Andrea whispered in awe. She stood on the bench of the picnic table and cried out “I LOVE YOU PERCY JACKSON!”
Sarah tried not to puke at that and instead rose to her feet and grabbed her crutches. Alexander waved good-bye to his new friends before following her. “See you soon Alex! I hope you’re in my Cabin!” Andrea called before Rebecca pulled her back to her seat.
Together they met Rachel and Percy at the front door of the Big House. Rachel swooped down and gave Sarah and Alex a bear hug. “Oh look at you Alex, it’s been too long!” Alex wiped his cheek after Rachel gave him a kiss. Sarah tried to look past her father and Rachel into the Big House, feeling the need to explore again. Percy squatted down and smiled at his daughter.
“Hey, Sally, you ready to meet a good friend of mine?” He asked. Sally nodded, wincing as she shifted weight off her broken leg. When they had arrived at camp the kids in the Apollo Cabin had done their best to create a splint and give her crutches, and they gave her something resembling a square and tasting just like her dad’s blue waffles. Since then her leg had felt a lot better. Now, Percy stepped aside and allowed Sarah to limp quickly into the grand house, her mind buzzing with new information.
She took in the décor and the residents all at once, ears perking as she heard her mother speaking in a subdued tone. “-old for a quest, Chiron” she overheard. A warm voice echoed throughout the chamber in response.
“Perhaps they should stay here for a while. You can’t shelter them forever, you know.”
Sarah’s mother sighed. “I know, Chiron. But you can understand why we want to.”
“Give a man a fish, he will be fed for a day. Teach a man to fish-“
“He will be fed for a lifetime.” Her mother finished. “I know.”
Sally peeked around the corner and saw a bearded man in a wheelchair sitting across from her mother. Annabeth had put her wavy hair into a ponytail and smiled at Sarah when she noticed her. “Hey, Sals. This is Chiron, he’s an old friend.”
The man in the wheelchair nodded in greeting, beckoning Sarah to enter the room. Alex, Percy and Rachel followed close behind.
“Hello, Sarah Jackson. I’ve heard much about you.”
“This room is awesome” Sally declared. “Is that a real cat?”
Chiron sighed. “Yes, but please try not to wake him up right now. Seymour is always a little hesitant with new people.”
On the wall, the mounted leopard head snored peacefully. Sally looked around for something to poke it with while Chiron spoke to Percy and Annabeth. “What can she do?” He posed first. Sally noticed a hint of excitement in his voice, as if he was a proud parent or a talent scout. She supposed it was a mix of both.
“Well today, when she got hurt, she made all the water explode.” Annabeth started.
“It was so cool Chiron you should’ve been there!”
“Percy, not the time.” Annabeth chided.
“Aw c’mon, this is totally the time!”
“Anyways” Annabeth continued. “That was the first time she’s ever done that. She can’t read Ancient Greek, but she’s ADHD.”
Chiron nodded, and from the corner of her eye Sally could tell he was studying her. She felt self-conscious on her crutches. “What about your mother’s side, Annabeth?”
Annabeth hesitated. “That’s a little harder, considering she hasn’t really picked up a sword or anything, but she is the captain of her Soccer team.”
Percy chimed in then. “Oh, what about the time that she solved a Rubik’s cube?”
Rachel chuckled a bit, patting Percy on the shoulder. “You sound like such a proud dad, Percy.”
“No, no, that is important.” Chiron insisted. “In fact, Sarah, would you mind coming over here?”
Sarah obliged and inspected a box that Chiron had picked out from one of the many shelves in the room. He opened it and dumped out the contents. Hundreds of jigsaw puzzle pieces poured out, creating a small mountain. He hid the box away and asked politely “Would you mind finishing this puzzle for me? It’s been quite a challenge.”
Sarah decided it would be more fun than poking Seymour, so she went to work on the puzzle. Although Chiron conversed with Rachel and her parents, the words were background noise as she focused on her task.
“What about this little one? Hello, Alexander.” Chiron greeted. “That’s a powerful name.”
Alexander proudly put his hands on his hips. “My dad says I’m named after a famous king.”
Chiron chuckled. “Yes, quite a famous one. Your namesake is Alexander the Great. It’s a lot to live up to.”
Alex huffed. “Don’t you worry, I’m gonna be even greater.”
Percy ruffled Alex’s hair. “As you can see he has his grandmother’s confidence.” Rachel and Annabeth laughed. “You’re gonna have to ask Piper and Jason about him though. He’s only 9 years old.”
Chiron turned to Annabeth with a gleam in his eye. “Oh, I remember a certain demigod who came here even younger with extraordinary skill.” Annabeth blushed and rolled her eyes.
Rachel spoke up again. “Where are Jason and Piper? I didn’t know they were here either!”
“They wanted to talk privately.” Percy explained, before glancing at Alex and covering his ears. Alex cried out in protest, pouting at not being included in the conversation. “They’re trying to decide between having him here or at New Rome.” Percy added.
“Done!” Sally called, rising from the chair where she had been hunched over, working on the puzzle. It formed the figure of the Disney version of Hercules, flexing his muscles. Chiron rolled over and patted her on the back.
“Well done, Ms. Jackson. How did you know where to put the pieces? Did you see the picture on the cover?”
“There was a picture?” She asked. “I just went by the little shapes.”
Annabeth poked Percy in the ribs. “Told you she was like me.” Percy stuck out his tongue in response.
“I don’t suppose you would allow me to speak to them privately?” Chiron asked. Percy and Annabeth agreed instantly, taking Rachel with them to catch up. Sally sat where she was while Alex took the seat Annabeth had been occupying.
Chiron smiled warmly at the two of them. “From what I’ve heard, this is all very new to you both.” He started. “Do you have any questions for me?”
Alex shook his head, but Sarah started to nearly shake from all the questions she had. “What is this place? Why does everyone like my parents so much? What did I do with the water? How is the cat alive? What’s an Oracle and how does Aunt Rachel tell the future? Where do his snacks go when he eats them?”
Chiron held up his hand for her to pause. “I can’t answer that last question, but it’s best not think about it too much.” He smiled gently again. “There’s a lot for you to learn. Depending on what your parents decide, you can stay here for the summer, and I promise you’ll have fun and learn a lot. What would you like, Sarah?”
Sally glanced around the Big House again. She couldn’t help the feeling that it felt, inexplicably, like home. “I want to stay here.”
Alex didn’t look convinced, and he kept playing with his fingers. Chiron must have noticed because he spoke directly to Alex. “Your grandparents, Alexander, are from two very different places. Sometimes it can make you feel confused about how you feel. Don’t worry, you don’t have to make a decision right now. I have a feeling your parents will allow you to choose later on.”
Alex smiled, apparently a lot more relaxed. “Thank you, sir.”
“Now, let’s bring your parents back in shall we?”
-
Annabeth responded better than Percy to leaving Sarah at Camp for the rest of the summer.
Her dad wouldn’t stop hugging her, which was not only embarrassing, it was especially weird because everyone kept whispering about how “cool Percy Jackson is”. “I’m going to be fine dad!” Sarah promised for the millionth time.
“I know! I know! Just, send us an Iris Message every now and then okay? Like, every day. Twice a day – no, three times. After every meal.”
“Dad!” Sarah protested. “You’re embarrassing me”
Annabeth laughed. “C’mon, Seaweed Brain.” She pressed gently, taking her husband’s hand. “She’ll be okay.”
Percy wiped tears from his sea-green eyes. “Okay, okay.” He smiled at Sarah. “I know you will, sweetheart.”
He finally stepped back and started towards the edge of camp, Alex jogged towards Sarah from where he had been standing with his parents. Sarah tried not to blush. “Hey, Alex.”
Alex smiled at her. “My parents are gonna let me live with Aunt Reyna for a while. They said it’ll be good for me, but I won’t be able to see you for a while.”
Sarah looked towards where Piper and Jason were standing. Piper was visibly crying on Jason’s shoulder, and he didn’t look much better. “How long are you gonna be there?” Sarah asked.
Alex shrugged. “A while? It’ll be longer than the summer. They have a school there and everything. We visit there sometimes for my dad’s work.”
Sarah nodded and suddenly gave Alex a hug. “Be safe, okay Alex?”
Alex groaned. “Sally, cooties!”
Sarah pushed him away and slapped his arm playfully. “Cooties aren’t real, you dork.”
Alex didn’t look convinced as he walked back toward his parents, but he did wave goodbye to Sally as they headed towards their car.
Sarah waved back, then closed her eyes and breathed in her new surroundings.
3 months of summer to go.
Payback (Director’s Cut)
youtube
Last month I covered a special unrated cut of 1989’s The Punisher my friend Matt gifted me. That cut was the only available version of the film on BluRay. Coincidentally, today’s entry is another film whose BluRay edition is also a special cut that Matt gifted me for another old-school, gritty action flick. That film is 1999’s Payback (trailer). This director’s cut has a new subtitle: Payback: Straight-Up. I am a huge fan of the film, and fondly remember catching it in theaters right after work against my superior’s wishes who kept pleading with me to stick around to cover for someone else who called in, but I already had plans to catch this movie at our then second-run $1 theater, The Plaza Twin, and I could not back out of them! I caught it a couple times off cable over the years, but it has been well over a decade since my last viewing, and I heard polarizing views on this director’s cut going into it which held me off from checking it out until Matt recently gifted it to me. For those unfamiliar with Payback, it stars Mel Gibson as Porter, a gritty con-man who is catching up to his past after escaping near death when he was betrayed by his partners, Val (Gregg Henry) & Lynn (Deborah Kara Unger). Catching up to his partners leads him down a rabbit trail of going through local drug racket goons, corrupt cops and other top brass in hopes of claiming the $70,000 he was screwed out of. Gibson is flatout awesome as the gruff, take-no-crap-alpha that is Porter. Watching him step-by-step get back on his feet on his return to town and work his way through the ranks of the crime syndicate known as “The Outfit” to get his money back was a breezy, raw, experience that wastes not a single minute in its 90 minute runtime.
I liked Gibson’s on-screen chemistry with an old flame he catches up with by the name of Rosie (Maria Bello). The two play off each other naturally and make a great team in the final act. Speaking of the final act, this is where I was taken for a loop as the third act in Straight-Up is entirely different from the original theatrical cut. In order to elucidate on this I will have to spoil some of the broad-strokes of the last act in both versions, so be forewarned! The theatrical version is not on the BluRay, and has a completely different final act where Porter tracks down the head boss of The Outfit, Bronson (Kris Kristofferson), and gets to him by kidnapping his son from a basketball game, and subsequently gets caught in the act and winds up in a brutal torture scene before escaping and ultimately getting his vengeance. That whole act is not in the director’s cut here, and Kris Kristofferson is completely absent in this version of the film! In the director’s cut Bronson is a woman voiced by Sally Kellerman who is only heard from via speakerphone when negotiating with Porter. She sets up a payment drop for Porter at the subway, and Porter and Rosie methodically pick away at The Outfit’s goons as they work their way to the drop.
I was initially taken aback by how different the final act is, but came around on it and ultimately really dug it after mulling it over for a few days. Hearing director Brian Helgeland’s commentary track and his interviews in the bonus feature, Same Story, Different Movie, helped connect the dots on how Helgeland was removed from the film during post-production after standing his ground against Paramount executives for not wanting to change the final act. I enjoyed both cuts of the film, and Straight-Up has a few other additional little scenes that portray Porter with more of a cold-blooded edge, and I can see how it came across differently to higher-ups at Paramount. Definitely check out that half hour bonus that sheds a lot of background on why Paramount switched things up for the theatrical cut, and what prompted Paramount to rectify the situation several years later by bringing back Helgeland to release his cut. Paybacks are a Bitch is the headlining bonus feature at a 49 minute duration. Paramount tracked down a wide array of the original cast and crew, including Helgeland, Gibson, Unger, Bello, Henry and many more for their memories from working on Payback. A lot of insight from filming in Los Angeles and Chicago I got a lot out of, and ditto with the running theme in this bonus with Helgeland referencing his mentor Richard Donner helping him out tremendously throughout and trying to win his approval. If you got the time, do not skip over this bonus either! Rounding off the bonuses is an 11 minute interview with author Donald Westlake, who wrote the book that was the inspiration for Helgeland’s screenplay for Payback.
The ultimate bonus to include would be also having the original theatrical cut of the film available, because as of this writing the director’s cut of Payback is the only version of the film available on BluRay. As much as Payback: Straight-Up won me over with its all-new final act, a part of me still wants that original version I have fond memories of in the theater. Regardless, if you have not seen either version and are especially a fan of no-nonsense revenge films, then I cannot recommend either version of Payback enough! An old interview from 2011 about Jane Eyre
BY EDWARD DOUGLAS ON MARCH 4, 2011
Actor Michael Fassbender may have first found his way onto filmgoers’ radars as Lt. Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (or Zack Snyder’s 300if you were paying attention), but before then, he had already established himself as one of the stronger dramatic actors of the decade with his unforgettable performance in Steve McQueen’s Hunger. He’s kept fairly busy since then with similarly stirring performances in Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tankand a few movies that slipped under most radars… and at least one that probably should have (Jonah Hex). Regardless, he’s poised to become a household name with his upcoming appearance as Magneto in X-Men: First Class and with his casting in Ridley Scott’s return to science fiction with Prometheus.
In Cary (Sin Nombre) Fukunaga’s take on Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Fassbender gets to play the iconic literary role of Edward Rochester, a character previously played by the likes of Orson Welles, Charlton Heston, William Hurt and Timothy Dalton. This Jane Eyre is played by Mia Wasikowska, her second iconic literary character after starring in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and for those who haven’t read the book, the movie follows the life of that title character, an impoverished young woman trying to find herself a life without love who ultimately becomes the governess for the troubled Rochester, who falls in love with her. Fukunaga has taken a far more realism-based approach to the material which has been adapted many times previously, this time with a cast that includes Jamie Bell, Dame Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins.
Having spoken with Fassbender just last year, we already had a fairly comfortable rapport when we sat down with him a few weeks back, making it much easier to get right into a fairly freeform chat about the movie as well as other things he has going on.
ComingSoon.net: Obviously, “Jane Eyre” is a classic piece of fiction so when somebody sent you the script, you must have known at least the title. Did you have any sort of connection to the book at all? Michael Fassbender: Yeah, I had read the book I think six years ago or so, because I was involved in perhaps doing this thing called “Wide Sargasso Sea,” which is the idea of what would have happened in Jamaica before the Brontë novel. It wasn’t Brontë who wrote it, but (Jean Rhys’) take of what would happen in Jamaica and Rochester as a young man and what happened with Bertha the wife and all that. I read that and I read “Jane Eyre” at the time, and obviously I read it again once they offered me Rochester this time around. My sister and my mother were big fans when I was a child and when I was in my teens as well, they were always talking about it because my sister was reading it. That was the reason why I wanted to do it, so they could take a look.
CS: They must be thrilled. Have they seen it yet? Fassbender: They haven’t, no, I haven’t seen it yet! I’m waiting for the premiere to have the nerves and just to experience it for the first time with an audience.
CS: I don’t want to embarrass you but everyone I’ve talked to–men, women, gay, straight–they all have the hots for you after seeing this movie. Fassbender: Oh, really?! (laughs)
CS: Even though you already were a sex symbol, I think this movie is going to put you over the top. Fassbender: Oh, fantastic! (laughs)
CS: Rochester is almost as an iconic character as Jane Eyre herself, especially to the women who read the book who must have great expectations of what Rochester would be like. Fassbender: Yeah, that’s the thing, and I did watch all the previous versions as well, a lot of them I could get my hands on.
CS: Wasn’t Orson Welles one of them? Fassbender: Yeah, I watched that and at one point, I was supposed to be doing “Wuthering Heights,” about three years ago I think it was now, so I watched Laurence Olivier do his “Wuthering Heights,” and I was like, “Woah, it’s so overdramatic,” and the same with Orson Welles, it’s like (doing his impression of Welles) “Jaaane… Jaaaaaaaane…!” I think Toby Stephens was my favorite – he did it for ITV, one of the British channels, it was a six-parter for television. Then I threw it all away and then I sort of concentrated on what was in the book and what was in the script. By treating him as the Byronic hero, which Brontë wrote him like, that gave me all I needed and then I thought, “Okay, he seems a bit bipolar as well.” His moods sort of swing and it’s because of all the sh*t that’s going on in his head and the fact that (SPOILERS!!!!!) he’s got this woman locked upstairs in the attic that’s always with him in a way that’s almost like he’s carrying a weight with him as well.
CS: It must be tough, because he’s supposed to be the perfect romantic lead but he does have all these secrets and flaws, which slowly start to come out as Jane gets to know him. Fassbender: Definitely flawed, yeah, and at the beginning, and you think, “God, this guy is an ***hole.” He’s sort of manipulative and cruel and charming and you realize that he’s just been putting up all these fronts and layers and protections. I mean, as a young man, this sh*t happened to him, and he started off his life I always imagined bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to have a go at life and then BANG! He gets knocked on his *** and so, because of that, he doesn’t trust people, he doesn’t trust relationships. He’s been burned. So when Jane comes into the house, she just starts peeling away one layer after the other and in the end, she sort of heals him.
CS: When I talked to Mia and Cary a couple of days ago, they were saying they both had books with copious notes in them and had been referring back to the book and having all these meetings to discuss it. Did you have to go back to the book a lot yourself for reference? Fassbender: Yeah, I don’t really take a lot of notes. I’ve noticed that my scripts are usually quite empty of notes to be honest. I’ve scribbled down a few things, but I read the script over and over again a couple hundred times, it must have been. That’s the only way I kind of prepare, I just sort of read it and read it and read it, till you’re absolutely sick of it, and then you read it again. Then when I’m on set, it’s sort of in my skin, so I can then go anywhere I want with it and feel free to allow things to happen, as opposed to making sure I’m hitting all the points.
CS: The words from the novel especially for your character are great, some of the lines he says you kind of want to keep them in your head to use as pick-up lines. Fassbender: “Right, that would be a good one! That’s a first date line!” (laughs)
CS: Exactly, but you can only use those lines as long as the woman hasn’t read “Jane Eyre” and know where you stole them from. But was it Cary who wanted to make sure that some of Rochester’s best lines from the book remained in the film? Fassbender: Yes, I mean I didn’t change the script. It was so well written and it’s finding those little moments in the book. You’ve got a book and how do you condense it into a script and that’s the really fine art there, so everything that’s in there, every sentence, is there for a reason, because it’s been filtered down to what is absolutely necessary to have. That’s why I was saying that there was a precision that I wanted to find with him, so that I’m not just brush-stroking over stuff, that it’s more finite and sort of detailed.
CS: Were you able to use anything from the other script you had read that involved the character? Fassbender: “Wide Sargasso Sea”? That’s one way of going about it, and I tended to not go that way. The whole idea… I mean, I did often think, “Oh, God, poor Bertha. She might have just been a horny lady. She might have just enjoyed sex and back then, it’s like ‘Whoa, you’re enjoying this sh*t, you must have the devil in you or you must be crazy.'” So there is that take on it, but I kind of went along the lines that she was insane and it was a hereditary thing, her mother before her had mental problems, so that’s kind of the line I took.
CS: Let’s talk about Mia. I met her for the first time a couple of days ago, and she’s really quite amazing in terms of being 18 and really having it together. Can you talk about what makes her such a perfect Jane Eyre, and why she embodies that character? Fassbender: Yeah, it’s just because she’s such a gifted actress, really is. Once I found out she was playing Jane Eyre, and I got “In Treatment” and I watched her episodes on that.
CS: I assume this was before “Alice” and “The Kids Are All Right”? Fassbender: Yes, I haven’t seen “Alice” yet actually, but I was like “Oh My God, she’s got so much maturity.” There was this 17-year-old, or 16 as she was then, and I was like, “Wow, who is this girl?” Her choices are so interesting and she’s got a real connection with the camera. You’ve seen her as Mia and also the fact that she comes from this dance background. She’s got this great physical authority and command of her physicality that is brilliant and also a discipline that she’s brought from that dance world into the acting world. I just sort of had to try and keep up with her. She’s I think the future, she’s like Meryl Streep class.
CS: You’re also working with Carey Mulligan who is another one of those impressive young actresses. Fassbender: I know. That’s the thing. Once you’re put amongst a high caliber of talent, it raises you.
CS: Oh, and of course, the girl from “Fish Tank.” Fassbender: Yeah, Katie (Jarvis), wow, what an explosion she is. She’s not an actress, she’s just Katie. I’ll be interested to see what she does next or if she wants to act at all, I don’t know.
CS: Have you seen any of the Cronenberg film you did yet? Fassbender: I haven’t seen it. I don’t really see the films until there’s an audience. What do you say about David Cronenberg? Other than as a man, obviously his talent is clear for everyone to see. He’s a real master and a real technician, as well as being an artist, but he’s just such a nice guy and such a light personality and very warm, and funny. We had a good sense of humor on set, and then Viggo is obviously a big hero of mine, and Keira is going to make a lot of people sit up and what she does in this film is going to be really impressive.
CS: How’s it been going working with Steve McQueen again on “Shame”? Is this a little more conventional since you’re shooting in New York? Fassbender: (shakes head) No, it’s all the things you expect from Steve. It’s intense. There’s nothing left on the floor at the end of scenes. Everything goes into the camera. We improvise, we take risks, and it’s exciting and Sean Bobbit behind the camera again, it’s sort of dancing all together. We often say that, Steve and I, it’s like musicians and when the timing’s right, you can feel it, and when the timing’s off, you can also feel it. I’m back to working with him tomorrow so I’m trying to make sure I’m well prepared really.
CS: So is he doing a lot of location stuff here in New York? Fassbender: Yup, all location.
CS: How has he been adjusting to shooting here versus Ireland? Fassbender: Well, I think he went to film school or art school here, so he’s familiar with New York and always had the idea of setting this story in New York, so he’s been in and out of New York for the last couple years. When he first mentioned this idea to me in 2008, he’s been coming back and forth since then.
CS: It’s great that he’s shooting in New York. We really appreciate when filmmakers bring their films here. Fassbender: There was a time when there was loads and then there was a time when there wasn’t any, and now it’s sort of coming back again, which is great, because it’s such a fantastic setting to make films.
CS: Can you tell me anything more about the movie? Fassbender: I can’t really.
CS: I know that you have a history of sex. Fassbender: Yes…
CS: And that Carey Mulligan plays your sister. Fassbender: Yes…
CS: Is there anything else you can say about it? Fassbender: No! (laughs) But it’s a beautiful script and I have to say that it’s a very relevant topic and we’ll see, we’ll see.
You can also read what Fassbender said about taking on the role of Magneto, the Master of Magnetism in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class over on SuperHeroHype.
Jane Eyre opens in select cities on March 11. Look for our video interview with director Cary Fukunaga very soon.
