Ok so first things first, I apologize to everyone who’s here for loona (or anything besides @taylorswift) because I just had the privilege of watching Miss Americana (and then immediately watching it again) and now my queue is full. I figure it’s fitting to get a bunch of Taylor posts in before the loona comeback in a few days... I guess this blog will actually have a lot of material for a while? lol?

Second things second, I really have been meaning to make a post about the amazing album that is Reputation. It features some of my favorite songs of her entire career and is so special for so many reasons that I want to go into in detail but I absolutely do not have the time. My hope is that I can get my semester back on track in the next few weeks and then be able to sit and write the post Reputation deserves, but it might have to wait until the end of May, after I graduate, get married, and move across the country I sincerely hope I can get it written before then, but it’ll just depend on how well I can keep up with my homework load and senior recital prep. This is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I listened to Reputation and realized how incredible it truly is and now I want to do it so bad in light of the footage shown in Miss Americana regarding the lack of Grammy nominations for it.

On that note, I want to take a second to talk about the Grammys. I know a lot of fans get really upset when their favs don’t get these awards but we all need to take a step back and realize that while it’s always an honor to be recognized for our hard work, most award shows are entirely a popularity contest, with little to no input from the actual fans. The way you get those awards is not by putting out quality material, but it’s by sucking up to whoever’s going to have voting power and waiting your turn. A lot of artists will put out music that deserves recognition far earlier in their career than they get credit for, but instead of recognizing good material, the award shows say “ok we think you’ll get popular enough to win but you’re not there yet, so we’ll wait until next year to give you an award”. It’s also difficult because sometimes I see what all has nominations for different shows and I want to root for so many different artists because we truly live in an amazing time where so many talented artists are putting out quality material and I want to see all of the artists I like get recognition for their work, but not everyone can win the award. All we can do is find the few that do run off of fan-based voting and support them.

Another Year, Another Recap - “Have a Coke and a smile... :)”

So, we're getting to the end, people. We're about to finish off another year. Personally, this year has been immensely better than the last.

I didn't even want to stay up and do any celebrating at the end of 2018. I just wanted to go to bed and be done with that bleepin year. This year has been a hell of a lot better. I hope that all of you can say something similar, but if not, there's always going to bed early, and putting your hope in the next year.

This past Christmas (and all Christmas', really) I spent time doing a lot of hating on Christmas music; it's a valued tradition of mine. I am, however, always surprised to find a few songs each year that don't bother me all that much. This year, one of them was John Legend's "Baby, It's cold outside" ft Kelly Clarkson  

- a rewritten, sans rapey vibe rendition to boot its 1940's something predecessor.

In this version (at least how I interpret it), both people wanted some action that night. John says all of the right stuff ("I'll call you a car", "maybe you SHOULD go"), creating a safe environment, and most importantly, not coming off as sleazy and rapey. He's also protecting himself with this recording:) But, let's be clear... he wants some, and he wants it bad! While Kelly, also wants some, but doesn't want to come off as being a hoe. Nobody wants to be labeled a hoe.  So, she says all of the right things as well ("My dad and brother are waiting for me", "I've gotta visit my sick grandma", "Gotta get home to the KIDS") But, at the end of the night, they both make a decision to sing to one another "Baby, It's cold outside, so let's stay in and BLEEP." That's how you do it! No guilt! No #METOO! No wife and kids around. All is well:) Divorces are still rising, and more older people (as well as old as bleep people) are on dating apps than ever before. Consider this song a Christmas gift from John & Kelly to you.

SAD & WEIRD:

Maroon 5's Super Bowl performance. It wasn't even really M5's fault; they simply did what they always do. It was more a poor choice by the NFL. A boring and awkward performance. There was a time when all anybody wanted was a shirtless Adam Levine- both women AND men. Even times when he wasn't performing, he would show up places, some random person would announce to everyone "Don't worry, Adam WILL be taking off his shirt tonight." Talk about ME TOO. It was so bad that the old, white, slaveowners of the NFL hired Jay-Z (one of the blackest icons we have) to come and save them. We'll see how that turns out.

GOOD & WEIRD:

Tyler, The Creator - "IGOR"

One of my fav projects of the year. Tyler, the Creator is an odd dude - I mean this as a compliment. I love how Hip-Hop has evolved. There's a lot more room nowadays to be yourself, no matter how outsiders might deem your behavior as weird (sometimes, others NOT saying this as a compliment). I love his creativity, and hope he continues to inspire other artists (especially in hip-hop) to be creative. Heeeee also says stuff like this "I like girls, but I have sex with their brothers." But, also uses the word "gay" as an insult. Who knows?? There's a lot to unpack there.

SAD:

In other news, Camila Cabello might be a racist. Y'all can look it up if you'd like, but some posts of hers resurfaced. I'm a fan of hers, and checked out the posts for myself, thinking "People are prob just overreacting" - they're not, it's bad. She has apologized, saying the whole "I'm older and wiser now" thing. The prob with that is she's only 22.

GOOD & BAD, I GUESS:

It's always good to see Adele out and about. These holiday pics show that's she's still alive (I get concerned, cuz she tends to disappear for a while) and apparently a lot thinner. This of course stirs men to say men type things, women to go on the attack, and all genuine compliments towards her to get lost. The good news is, Adele seems to be getting pretty chummy with Santa, and everyone knows that St. Nick is a heartbreaker. Adele should be spurned and back in the studio writing amazing tunes soon enough.

We were all enthralled by these two docuseries. It's interesting how different races respond to MJ. Both see him as... you know, but most black people are still listening to his music. White people on the other hand are ready to riot every time someone plays one of his songs... except around Halloween - gotta have "Thriller".

We love depressing television.

Best Actress... hmm.. idk about this one. Many say J.Lo deserves an Oscar for her performance in "Hustlers" - a movie made for strippers, by strippers.

Exotic dancers are making a comeback! Maybe one day, stripping will be going in the same direction marijuana is - just something people do. No more shame! You can actually make a decent living at it - ain't that right, Stormy?

And who can forget this J.Lo quote "This city, this whole country, is a strip club. You've got people tossing the money. and people doing the dance."

There have also been plenty of things in 2019 that I have not understood:

1) Hatin on Greta

Greta - trying hard to do what she believes will make this world a better place for us all.

Certain people - "Shut that bitch up! She's crazy!"

2) Hatin on Megan Rapinoe

MP - leading a soccer team to a World Cup victory, being outspoken for women's rights and gay rights, having awesome purple hair, and trying to be the best leader and athlete she can be.

3) Popeyes Chicken Sandwich

 - the gov't test for a new crack epidemic. Sadly, I never got to partake.

4) Allison Mack

- This whole story began being unveiled in 2018, but continued through this year. I still don’t understand how this story has not gotten more attention. Some of y’all don’t even know what I’m talking about.... google it, and be horrified.

5) BTS (and K-pop in general)

-I love them, but... our country's K-Pop fetish has gotten kinda out of hand. All kinds of artists are trying to share the spotlight with them. Next, we're going to see them team up with Kendrick Lamar.

6) TikTok - I just don't get it. What’s the difference? 

7) Cancel Culture

To me all cancel culture is silenced by Trump being our president. Where was all of this righteous indignation when we voted him into office? You might say "I didn't vote for him." Yeah, but, WE did - Idk what that says about us, but it's prob not good.

It doesn't even really work - Louis CK is currently selling out venues for an unapologetic tour. I'm not even saying that it SHOULD work (in SOME cases). I'm simply saying that it doesn't work (in most cases). But, perhaps the fear of it working is enough. Or perhaps we should think through how we spend our anger.

But, he's viewed by some as the perfect man. I disagree. I don’t think that he’s merely the perfect man, but the perfect human.

His career and popularity paths are unique. No one would call him a... GOOD actor, but look at him! And he seems like a genuinely, awesomely, good person. And whatever "good person" means to you, he's at the top! We should all (men and women) be a lil more like Keanu in 2020.

     It’s been such a long time since I’ve posted anything. But can you guys blame me? It’s been such a snore fest in Santa Monica, I almost just left you guys to you own devices to let you find out all the dirt by yourselves. But we couldn’t have that, can we?

     Anyways, while I don’t have a complete recap of the things going on (not that theirs anything interesting), you guys have sent me your BURNING CHLAMYDIA-LIKE questions that have piqued by interests. 

I would say things in this town are getting set in motion, but only time will tell…

But before we get into the questions, two things:

Now, the RUMOR (keyword) is that he ditched the strap and tried out the real thing with one Julian Stark. This, allegedly, happened a few months back according to sources close to the subject(s). Sadly, I honestly don’t believe this, this just sounds like fan fiction. Myles has a loving girl friend back home in Texas. It is PREPOSTEROUS to think our little sea critter would be a LIAR. I mean, could you guys really imagine OUR Myles letting Julian go snorkeling in HIS (chocolate) sea? HANG TEN in his boygina? Go KOWABUNGA in that ass??? Keeping up with the Aldridge’s has been pretty dull this season.

Alex is, naturally, chasing after Award Winning Hottie, Jason. Their tumultuous relationship is one I’ll have to keep an eye on. You would think they were together by the way they interact, one minute their woohoo-ing in the back of an Uber and the next they need space? Maybe they should just call it quits? And apparently Alex was seen getting cozy with Logan Lancaster. I’m told that there was some serious flirting going on???? I heard that Jason totally came up in conversation too, and Logan called him like, a pussy, or something? (Fighting Words!!!) Whatever he said the two laughed about it, as they continued vibing. And to be honest? I kind of ship it. I mean I am obviously the president of the SorrentinHOEs, but ya girl Alex needs some stability. And hello??? Logan is as stable as they come! Daddy Sorrentino might be perfect at everything else, but maybe he should sit on the bench when it comes to Alex, Logan is scoring too high for him to keep up. #LoLex

Crackhead Asher is one that keeps getting written in about, though. A little bird told me, well, several little birds have told me that they’ve seen a guy (with a striking resemblance to our fav) out with several different guys since he’s been here in Santa Monica. I feel like Asher is a little fruity but is this something he would keep from his family? His twin? I feel like they would care less about this and more about his trips to San Diego to buy METH. The Quality Kind. Hmm, I suppose I’ll have to set up cameras inside his house, too, just to see if this story checks out. I’ll keep you posted.

The only Aldridge that matters is the MATRIARCH herself, Alegenda Aldridge.      This is the only negative thing I’ve gotten about Jamie since I’ve started following him. If hoards of you thirst buckets aren’t writing in about want to “operate his ride” then you’re saying how he looks like a math teacher and you’d like to show him an acute angle (with your legs). Wait, is that last part just me? Yikes, this is awkward. Anyways, it’s true. Jamie and Mackenzie Westwood (the twink in question) dated for like 5 months, and when Mac ended things (because Jamie couldn’t commit) he packed his things and left. Apparently he forgot his paint brushes after his departure so he tried to BREAK INTO Jamie’s house and take them. And I guess they got into a fight. Based on the voice memos I got, it got pretty intense. Some people wrote in asking if Jamie got shot.

     Yeah he got shot … with love. The repressed feeling jumped out! This whole fight was laced with PASSION and I was waiting for them to rip each other’s clothes off and wake up your puppy (again). They TOTES still love each other. I mean hello??? Amazon Prime is right there and you choose to commit grand theft PAINTBRUSH on a random night, Mackenzie???? Give me a BREAK!

     I just hope that this doesn’t interfere with his work, and like, distract him while he’s operating a ride. Wouldn’t want him to ALSO cause a major accident which could kill people. #shade

OLIVA AND DIANA ARE THE LESBIAN POWER COUPLE WE NEED!! I DONT NEED TO ELABORATE ON THIS, MAKE IT HAPPEN LADIES.

(and 5, I guess) And I am torn between Wes/Diana and Wes/Iris. You see, Diana and Wes have history and just thinking about them and all that they’ve been through, the fact that they can find solace through each other’s arms just …. sorry I need a moment. 

But Wes and Iris, it’s just … ugh … the flavors. Both of their pasts have been pretty hard, and I would love to see Iris in a happy relationship. Especially after that Sebastian guy (don’t ask).

So these are MY to watch list, lets hope something becomes of it!

Now I’ve been an army for a while now, I’d say a dedicated stan since early 2016, and before that I was just aware of them as a whole but I stopped paying attention to kpop for a while there and it was unfortunately during their debut days,,, I always wish I had started paying close attention again sooner because these boys changed my life. And I don’t say that lightly,, I mean it with every ounce of sincerity I can muster. They made me happy, and they made me realize that just giving up isn’t the answer when u rlly want something. They let me know that they’re unafraid to be sincere with their feelings so I shouldn’t be afraid of being sincere in mine either. They literally opened my eyes when I needed it most and I’m forever grateful for that,, and I cannot express properly just how much respect and love I have for these men because of that. They’ve put so much of themselves into their music and into their careers and even when things weren’t picking up as quickly as they wanted they still pushed and carried on and idnskskns NO WORDS CAN TELL U HOW MUCH THOSE EXAMPLES MEAN TO ME. Their honesty and strength give me strength and I just,,,, I LOVE THEM. TO END THIS RAMBLING BIT HERE,, I rlly rlly love them. I’d do a lot for their happiness because they’ve given me the tools to take back some of my own happiness and there’s rlly no way to show u,, or them,, all the gratitude I feel for that.

SO NOW THAT THATS OUTTA THE WAY & we’re clear on all of the above,, I now want to say that I have a deep love for my fellow armys that are truthful on why they stan and that feel a deeper connection for the boys other than just on a shallow level. If ur here for the right reasons and u just want to show the boys support in any way possible, I support u !! I love u and I would love to speak abt the boys with u if u ever need a friend ! Wanna talk abt how much they motivate u ? Let’s do it up boo ! Wanna speak abt mental health issues ? I know abt those on a personal level babe ! They just want to make us happy with their music and performances because doing what they do makes them happy and seeing people LITERALLY try to guilt others into thinking they’re not real fans because they aren’t buying the title track fifteen times,, or they can’t afford to buy all 4 albums at least once, or they’re not promoting as hard as they can is 😣😣😣 SO BEYOND RIDICULOUS TO ME. It’s gross !!! It’s not right and it isn’t what bangtan are abt ?? These boys have always been sincere with us,,, always wanted to shoot for the stars but would always fall short and once they started gaining some real traction and reaching those stars they stopped aiming so high. The boys are happy! They have accomplished so much, and they never expect /anything/ from us as fans. They only wish for our happiness and support. They’ve said it time and time again and yet we still have people leading lynches against others for not voting on stupid polls ? For not hashtagging every tweet with a voting or trending tag for our favs ? For not being able to afford to buy albums or singles ?? Or hell,, some are even saying others need to put forth more of their effort to contact people they don’t know to let them buy singles for them ?? Really ?? It’s truly gotten so bad and I’m so sad whenever I open social media anymore 😔 people have lost sight of what the whole purpose of stanning a group even means & idk ,, it just breaks my heart.

If u only want to support bangtan by trying to break records they don’t even hope to break then go ahead but don’t shame others for not joining u. Let people be a fan and show support in their own ways and just know that even if some of us aren’t publically claiming to buy so many albums and so many singles,, we very well may be doing that on our own and out of the goodness in our hearts because we want the best for the boys that make our lives a little bit brighter. The recognition for awards and records just isn’t at the forefront of our minds because their music and happiness comes first, and so do ours. Its also not nice to pressure others into doing something they may not be able to do.

And at the end the day we all have our own lives and own narratives to live out,, and not all of those narratives involve intensively stanning a boy group we love 25/7. Why Harry Styles Didn’t Get a Grammy Nomination.

Ok so most of us are not going to want to hear this but I’m going to say it anyway. We all know that Harry is more than deserving of not only a nomination but a Grammy itself. His album was amazing. It was different from the masses but also diverse within its own collection. Songs like ‘Meet Me in The Hallway’ and ‘Kiwi’ couldn’t be further apart sonically but fit perfectly within the collection. The production was out of this world and the lyrics were thoughtful and thought provoking. But, you all know this already. I’m seeing a lot of people extremely upset about the nominations and I’m here to slap some hard truths onto you.

Unfortunately in this world that we live in talent isn’t the only thing you need to win awards and accolades. Especially for a show like the Grammys. Remember last year when Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ didn’t win a single award even though she was nominated eight times. Keep that in mind, it’ll come up later. The reason people win Grammys these days is a combination of two things that should have nothing to do with each other. Talent and Hype. Harry’s one of the most talented artists out right now. Everyone agrees on this fact, music execs, album reviewers and fans alike. But there is little to no hype around him. He hasn’t really gained many new fans outside of the people who loved him from the beginning. This is reflected in his social media following. People follow you on social media because they’re intrigued by you and want to know you better. His numbers have stayed relatively the same for years. And I honestly think that it’s his fault.

Harry doesn’t post a tweet or on Facebook or Instagram unless it’s to promote himself or show some profound gratitude. And it’s fine, even respectable, that he values his privacy and anonymity so much but that’s not how our world works anymore. There’s absolutely zero interaction between him and his fans or the media. In real life he usually disappears for weeks or months on end lately. You hardly ever even see a paparazzi picture of him. So if you’re a new fan there’s nothing there to intrigue you except 10 songs. And while they’re 10 amazing songs, people usually come for the talent and stay for the person. But in Harry’s case there’s no reason to stay. My best friend called him boring a few months ago and I thought nothing of it. But for the people who aren’t hardcore friends that may be how he comes off, boring and aloof.

Grammy voters are regular people just like us. Usually they vote based on talent and hype, as in whether they like the person or not. It’s human nature. Take Taylor Swift for example. Taylor is a talented singer and songwriter. Not more or less than any of the other “pop princesses” in my opinion. So why was she such a Grammy darling and sold over a million albums with ‘Reputation’ but didn’t get a single nomination? Because of hype. Over the last few years you couldn’t open any social media platform or gossip mag without seeing her face. Her romances and friendships and fueds were front page everyday and her name was in peoples mouths all the time. For a voter, it’s easy to vote for her because you feel like you know her. You know who she’s dating, who her songs are about, who her “squad” is made up of, and who her arch nemesis is of the moment. With Harry, we don’t know anything about him. This year Taylor disappeared from the radar and in this fast paced world we live in, if we don’t see you, we forget about you. That’s the reason why she didn’t get any nominations for her entries. No one was talking much about her in the media. But then why did she sell so many albums? Because she still had hype with the people who ultimately matter, the fans, the consumer. She was on social media talking to them and connecting with them. She invited some of them to her house for God’s sake. As a fan, you see your fav making an effort and you reward them by supporting their efforts. Again, it’s human nature.

But once again, you have to have both talent and hype for things like the Grammys. Ed Sheeran was gone for a year as well and even tho he sold very well, he didn’t do promo like he usually does and that’s why he only garnered two nominations for an amazing album. Someone like Selena Gomez has more hype than she knows what to do with, but she’s lacking in the talent department. Selena is the most followed person on Instagram and even though she’s beautiful and some of her songs are catchy, that has little to do with it. People follow her because she’s surrounded by rumor and speculation regarding her love life. People are interested in things like that, and she gives the people what they want. Conversely, Demi Lovato has more talent than she knows what to do with. But she’s lacking in the hype department. Which is why she didn’t get any nominations either. Think about it. Everyone thought that Jay-Z’s ‘4:44’ was going to be a simple outlier this year, but it got me most nominations. He has name recognition and voters respect him and his talent. But the album was also hyped as a response to Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’. And even though Jay-Z has little to no presence on social media, his wife does, and they’re often seen out and about and people are talking about them and their kids constantly.

Now back to Rihanna. I personally believe that ‘Anti’ is her best effort to date and she deserved her eight nominations. But last year she was hardly on social media and there was no controversy surrounding her and it showed. It’s sad to think that something as trivial as social media and controversy and raising your fame level could have anything to do with the Grammy’s but it does and musicians have to take that into effect. One Direction deserved at least a nomination with their last album but the voters already put them in the category of “teen pop fluff”. And besides Zayn leaving, there wasn’t much talk surrounding them either. Their management always made sure they had squeaky clean images and that’s just not realistic. And even tho Zayn’s extremely talented, absolutely no one is talking about him if it doesn’t have to do with Gigi Hadid. Which is why ‘Mind of Mine’ flew under the radar.

This year Harry did SNL, X-Factor, and The Late Late Show and he was brilliant in all of them. People might have seen those performances and decided to follow him on social media to get to know him better, but when they do, there’s nothing there to discover. Even on his BBC Special, the most interesting thing we learned about him was that he didn’t like vinegar on his chips. True fans may be satisfied with this but new fans won’t be. I mean Beyoncé posts videos and selfies for her fans. And let’s me honest the hardcore fans became do because we were intrigued by the person in the early days. We came for the music and stayed for them because we felt like we knew them. I think Harry has a real chance of winning a Grammy in the future because his talent will not fade. However, he needs to do a lot more to gain new fans and actually make people interested in him. He needs to be more open and honest, more present. I hope he changes his ways and stops hiding his life so much as if people don’t deserve to know anything about him. And even though people are not entitled to know anything about your personal life, a selfie and a hello to your fans every once in a while is not too much to ask.

Golden Globes 2019: Who Will Win, Who Should Win

Pop culture in the internet age moves pretty fast sometimes. If you don't slow down and enjoy it every once in a while, you might miss it.

Even as another year's award season brings with it renewed debates about what purpose awards shows serve in the era of democratized entertainment, we're moved to read about and watch alike as celebrities receive statues and we, as the viewer, somehow feel that a celebrated cause of our own is being honored.

It's a little silly, sure, but it's still a fun and relatively harmless way for audiences to step back and take stock of some of their favorite movies and TV shows, while also arguing with others about their own favorites. (We say “relatively” harmless, because Suicide Squad has an Oscar thanks to this whole process. People don't forget. We didn't.)

This Sunday, January 6th, the 76th Annual Golden Globes goes down, giving celebrities another excuse to get drunk as they accept their statues while also giving audiences a reason to get drunk as they heckle the ceremony's skits. In what proved to be a phenomenal year for both art forms, the races are as hard to call as they've ever been.

But fear not: We've assembled a primer that you can consider for your predictions and/or soft wagering at parties. (Of course, we also couldn't help but slip in our own personal picks as well.) Keep these in mind come Sunday, and feel free to join us online as we offer up-to-date coverage throughout the evening. If anything, it'll give you an opportunity to laugh at any we got wrong … and silently applaud those we got right.

It's been an all-around great year in this category, to the point where if there weren't a monolith in the midst, we'd have a hard time calling it for 2019. But Roma has become an arthouse phenomenon in the weeks since its Netflix rollout, a must-see revival of the kind of personal, sweeping filmmaking that populated some of film's best eras. It's one of Consequence's favorite films of last year, but then, so is Shoplifters. Hell, even Capernaum and Never Look Away drew individual year-end votes. The honor we'd most love to see would be one for Barry Jenkins, who managed the remarkable feat of capturing and translating James Baldwin's unmistakable command of tone to the screen. No small feat, there. But we'll hardly be upset if, and likely when, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara take the prize for their searingly funny work on The Favourite. Score is a tough category this year, at least for the Golden Globes, because there really isn't an obvious frontrunner. Also, there are several notable composers missing. Where is Beale Street's Nicholas Britell? Or BlackKklansman's Terence Blanchard? So, judging from this crop, especially with the curious inclusion of Marco Beltrami, it's probably going to come down to name recognition alone. That gives Desplat and Hurwitz, two darlings of the awards circuit, a favorable edge, but then you have to remember that Black Panther is the big blockbuster of the bunch. With that in mind, we're going to gamble and say this one goes to Wakanda, but we would be equally stoked if Hurwitz's dreamy atmospheres won, too. -Michael Roffman

The former sticks out in Adam McKay's political farce like a sore thumb, while the latter gives the weighty supporting performance. Grievances aside, that helps us pare down the nominees in this selection to one name: Mahershala Ali. Not only is he a recent awards champ for Moonlight, but he also has been at the forefront of the outstanding hype for the not-so-outstanding Green Book. The dark horse is Adam Driver, who steals every scene in Spike Lee's historical drama, and if he manages to come out ahead of everyone, we'll drop our wine come Sunday night.  –Michael Roffman

The strange ongoing debate about where exactly The Favourite's leading trio belongs in terms of awards categorization continues, but in the meantime, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone (who both have leading screen time, seriously, why is this a thing) will have to avoid splitting the category for their excellent work. Claire Foy garners the only top-category nomination for the otherwise slept-on First Man, alongside Amy Adams for her quietly eerie work as Lynne Cheney. For our money, though, the top winner at so many ceremonies up to this point will continue onward here. Regina King has been doing outstanding work for decades, and we hope she'll continue to be recognized for one of her most felt performances yet. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer
