* B1RD-BR4IN 3000 - ATK 10 DEF 5 * One of the Conductor's greatest props ever. * Or so he says.
Time’s End is an AHIT/Undertale crossover AU of sorts, taking place in the aftermath of a timeline where you lose the final boss fight against Mustache Girl. You can find the write-up here! In addition, you can find the write-ups for the Neutral Endings and TimeWarp Route Requirements on Google Drive! The logo for Time's End was designed by @bittybattybunny. She's an incredible artist, be sure to check out their work here on Tumblr and over on Twitter!! This track was commissioned from my boi Wisteria Bird Studios. Be sure to check out his work too!
Motifs:
Battle of Award 42
Train Rush
original
You can listen to this track in high quality on the AU’s SoundCloud here, and in their separate "in-game" loops on Google Drive! The rest of the description is underneath the Read More.
The Conductor fills Mettaton's shoes in this world. He may be the sole greatest influencer in the bird entertainment now (thanks to him ousting Grooves during the initial "Time's End" fiasco) but… he's incredibly bored and agitated. There are no obstacles in his path to success, and only now does he realize how much he despises it -- though he'll be damned if he EVER admits to missing DJ Peck Neck for now at least. His kinder side -- although still faintly there -- has become a LOT harder for his crew to see over time, especially Thomas the Inventor, who receives the brunt of Conductor's unchecked cockiness and fury nowadays. Bow Kid's arrival in the Mafia Flows makes Conductor immediately pounce on the opportunity for something CLOSE to a rival in his life again. For the "dungeon" scene in this AU: the Conductor had a mech built from and disguised within the remnants of his first ever train (which derailed and was damaged beyond repair,) and after some reminiscing, he ambushes Bow Kid and SMASHES the old passenger car. The battle starts from here. …Unbeknownst to Conductor, Tom has his own ideas, so the mech has a lot of faults that Bow Kid is able to exploit.
Ye ik it's still not funni musriel his theme real but I was low-key getting a bit tired of putting so many "heavy" tracks one after another on the account. So here's the song that plays when you fight a scottish bird's mecha built from a goddamn steam train. This is yet another one of the ideas in this AU where I had no ideas initially, then wound up shitposting my way into coming up with something needlessly-but-also-majorly awesome. Except this one actually winds up tying a bit into the "arc" I settled on for this part of the story! (A large string of these sorts of ideas also happen to be in the "Hotland" portion of this AU, come to think of it. Sexy robot rectangles and weeaboo lizards overcomplicate things ig lmaooooooo) The track is very much inspired from Digga-Leg's Theme from Super Mario Galaxy 2; the Super Mario RPG flavor was all Kristian's idea, and he did a fantastic job on this piece. Was fantastic working with him, as always. Hope you guys enjoy! :) (P.S. uhhhh don't worry i have an idea for the "Oh! One True Love" replacement too, i just honestly don't give enough of a fuck to wait to finish that one before i post this one. out-of-order posting for the win baybeeeeeeeeee!) (P.P.S. ik i didn't post the updated track 71 here on tumblr after the soundcloud post last month, part of me honestly doesn't rly feel like it but i'll maybe see about doing it when i can force myself lmaooooooo)

I rlly like the Atlantis idea that one feverish anon had! Is the "desert king" in this case Jazz, or is it someone else (like Zeta?) I'm also imagining his former masters weren't that kind to him either, maybe they "trained" him to be able to do tricks and stuff, in case they wanted him to be an entertaining piece at a party. I feel bad for his calf/fry tho (I'm assuming its Bluestreak or Smokescreen) I can't imagine the tank is very big.... no proper room to swim or anything...... And they're in a desert, so its hot, and I can't imagine Praxian Mers are able to handle heat that well (especially since, for a lot of marine animals, the slight change in water temperature can have severe consequences and cause great harm or change.) Also, how do you think the Wild Praxian mers view their Captive bretheren? Do they want to rescue them, or do they view them as soft and week since they know nothing but their tanks and being fed by other mechs. ((Ngl this is giving me brain worms.... kinda wanna write something about this........))
Before I respond I want to place a public service announcement.
ANYONE IS WELCOME TO WRITE FIC INSPIRED BY WHAT'S SHARED HERE.
I am not possessive about ask plots. If I want to write a fic based on a thread, I will. It doesn't bother if you do too at all.
The only things I am possessive about are my OCs. I don't have many and I like people to ask permission to use them and to talk about characterization with me. Some of things characters were created by me in fragile moments and I am attached.
Moving on.
I like it being Jazz. He's a young king being gifted a serious peace offering after winning a war with Vos. Vos did not expect the creation of the kings they killed to stomp them but they got stomped. The aquarium is climate controlled so Prowl and spawn don't overheat. They would dry out quickly if they tried to escape and Prowl would be quite upset about that. It's a beautifully planted tank but definitely not so big for a mech sized fish. Some extra sadness. Prowl used to be able to sing and hear the song of his brethren back. In the desert, he's alone.
Wild Praxians feel bitty for their captive kin. Some have rescued captive Praxians. They are a liability though, they aren't fast so a lot of wild Praxians won't procreate with an escaped captive bred Praxian for fear of their creations inherited their fins.
Prowl has escaped before. He may be a wild born but captive bred mer.

Decided all the Jasonnie I write for the valentine’s event is gonna take place in Future Donnie’s timeline from my fic Not Part of the Plan (yeah that means he’s doomed by the narrative but don’t worry about that I won’t be writing sad shit (I already did all that oopsie))
Anyway first week prompt is Music based, so I’m writing this scene loosely inspired by Wow I’m Not Crazy by AJR (because that song is very jasonnie vibes in my brain)
Donatello wasn’t sure this was a good idea.
Then again, he hadn’t been sure it’d be a good idea to approach Jase at the junkyard where he happened to find the dragon digging through some junked computers, interestingly without his usual purple jacket.
Donatello approached, after a lot of thinking, because part of him was in fact worried. Their last encounter ended when the mech the dragons were building exploded due to power overload. Jase almost got caught in the blast, only saved by deciding to jump into Donatello’s arms, allowing the turtle to shield them both.
Donatello tried not to overthink the situation. It’d just be terrible of him to let the guy die, even if they were enemies. The only part that started eating at his mind was the fact he’d been so relieved.
So, he approached. Of course the encounter started messy, Jase spitting out empty threats that Donatello easily countered, but when it was clear a fight wouldn’t break out the dragon relaxed, mostly.
Somehow, it ended with Donatello inviting Jase to chat with him over pizza.
Somehow, Jase agreed to it.
Could be a trap. An attempt to win back Donatello’s trust just to sneak around him and steal his tech. But he braced himself for that, wouldn’t be bringing a lot of tech to these meetings and definitely wouldn’t take any home with him.
Regardless, far too late to take any of it back now. After Jase gave him a confused look when the brick wall twisted open, the pair of them stepped into Hueso’s restaurant.
“Should have guessed this wouldn’t be a normal pizza place.” Jase sighed, hands tucked into the pockets of his not purple jacket.
“Sorry, but we’d have a much more difficult time going anywhere else.” Donatello gestured to his own face. “Relax, I bring April in here all the time so they’re used to seeing humans by now.”
Jase mumbled, glancing around the crowded dining room. “Hope they won’t be upset if I end up staring.”
“Just don’t stare then.” Donatello gave him a smirk before turning back to the host desk.
It took a minute from Hueso to return to it, adjusting his hat. He greeted Donatello with a smile, but raised an eyebrow at Jase.
“Oh?” The skeleton asked, grabbing the menus. “A new guest for today?”
“Yes, this is Jase. He’s my--” His brain stumbled over what word to use for a second. “Friend.”
Hueso continued to stare, as if he was trying to read Donatello’s mind, but finally lead them to a table.
Jase at least seemed to settle in, mostly. He did flinch a couple of times when a yokai or mutant would wander past the table. Though whether he was surprised by their size or their shape, Donatello couldn’t say.
“Huh, surprised the pizza here is normal.” Jase glanced over the menu, then squinted. “Or not.”
“The slugs are good, I promise.”
“You would think so.”
Donatello glared. “And what is that supposed to mean?”
“Well you’re a turtle, right?” Jase raised an eyebrow at him. “I bet you guys would eat like, spiders.”
“Scoff, I do not eat spiders.” Donatello crossed his arms. “They’re far too valuable for pest control. Crickets on the other hand.”
“Ew.”
“You eat shrimp don’t you? How is it any different?”
“There’s no way they taste the same.”
Donatello knew that they, in fact, did not taste the same, but that wasn’t the point. “Shrimp are just bigger and slightly different bugs.”
“I can’t peel a cricket.” Jase scoffed, but was starting to smile.
“You could if you were careful enough.”
That actually got him to snort in amusement. He sat up, smiling even wider now. “Yeah, okay, having fun trying to picture that. How would that even work?”
“Well,” Donatello held up a finger. “If you don’t want to go through the trouble of using some precision knives, you could always pop off the head and squeeze it like toothpaste.”
Jase gagged, sticking his tongue out. “Ew, no. No thank you.”
“Same thing as shrimp.”
“No it is not!” Jase shouted, but smiled even wider.
Donatello smiled back, glad the tension in the air was finally gone. He began to wonder, back in the junkyard, that if they weren’t being pitted against each other they might get along. Maybe that hypothesis was accurate.
They had another brief, playful argument about what kind of pizza to get. Donatello kept calling him a coward for avoiding any of the stranger options, but finally gave up. They just ordered two mediums, save the trouble of taking thirty minutes to decide what to eat.
“So.” Donatello tried to pick a topic when they got their food. “How much information about yourself are you willing to share?”
Jase’s expression shifted back to that half glare, showing he had his guard up. “Depends what you’re asking.”
“Well, as a starting question.” Donatello plucked one of the slugs off his pizza and chewed on it. “Why do you hang around Kendra?”
Jase’s glare sharped for a second, but then relax as he picked a slice up off his own plate. “I don’t. Not anymore.”
Donatello almost dropped his food. “Huh?”
“What, was the lack of a jacket not enough of a hint?” Jase rolled his eyes and started to chew.
“She kicked you out?”
“I left.” Jase let out a long sigh and drank some water. “After the whole explosion incident that almost killed me--”
“You’re welcome.” Donatello clicked his teeth and kept eating.
“Shut it, you’re the reason I got trapped up there in the first place. Anyway, after that mess it was kind of the final straw. I’d been trying to get away from her since...”
Jase suddenly got very quiet, eyes focused on something in the dining room. Donatello followed his gaze, but couldn’t spot anything out of the ordinary. Did one of the other patrons catch his eye? No. His gaze looked far too distant for that.
Jase suddenly chugged some more water, long enough that he gasped for air when he stopped. He put his pizza down, fingers digging into the table as he took a few deep breaths.
“Since,” He suddenly continued, “Something else happened. But it’s not that simple, you know, her being my step-sister and being under the same roof for a while. I moved in with my dad, changed colleges, this whole mess was just what I needed to finally put my foot down.”
Geez, it took an explosion for that? Why didn’t Jase just leave sooner? Donatello didn’t verbalize that question.
Instead he’d try something else. Seemed like a good time for a subject change. “So... with her not around... we really don’t have to keep being enemies.”
“We might, if you try and get in my way.” Jase returned to eating, but he was going so much slower than Donatello who was already on his third slice.
“Okay, but why would I?” Donatello waved a hand. “Planning to make a giant mech to wreck the city again?”
“While making a mech sounds nice, I don’t have the resources, and it’s not my main priority.”
“So what is?”
Jase studied him, suspicious as ever. Donatello tried to keep his expression neutral, or at the very least not smug.
“Prescription drugs.” Jase shoved the last of the slice in his mouth.
“Huh?”
“The cost of a lot of prescription drugs is insane. Do you want to just look up the cost of insulin? It’s insane, for something people need to survive. I want those hacking resources to bug the systems so they cost less.”
Donatello tilted his head. “That’s uh... surprisingly noble?”
“My dad’s a pharmacist, I grew up hearing about it a lot.” Jase grabbed a new slice. “I didn’t mind doing whatever Kendra suggested for a while if it meant I had the resources but now, well, I’ll just have to figure it out myself.”
Donatello rubbed the back of his neck. “I mean... I could help?”
Jase stared at him, through him. “Uh huh, what’s the catch?”
He smirked. “Don’t betray me and steal my tech?”
“Come on, Von Ryan, you don’t expect me to fall for that, do you?”
“What motive could I have at this point to trick you? Is it so hard to believe that I--”
A soft buzzing interrupt them. Jase pulled out his phone, tapping it to cut off whatever caused the noise. Then he pulled a small bottle out of his other pocket. Pills? He popped one out and downed it with some water before putting it away again.
“Fine.” Jase continued the conversation. “It’s not impossible to believe that you might--”
“What was that?”
“Huh?”
“What did you just take?”
Jase stared at him like he was stupid. “My anti-anxiety meds?”
“Oh.” Donatello suddenly wondered if he’d put his foot in his mouth. “Uh, why do you need--”
“None of your business.” Jase’s voice took on a dangerous edge that he hadn’t used before.
Right. “Topic completely forgotten about.” Doantello waved both hands in front of him. “Anyway, I find that when we aren’t fighting on opposite sides, J-son, you’re rather easy to talk to. I theorized back in the junk yard we might be able to become friends, and so far you’re only proving my theory.”
“I could leave.”
“But you haven’t yet.”
Jase pouted at that, almost crossing his arms before he decided to finish off his water. Hopefully the waiter would come by soon with a refill. “Well, the pizza is good. And... talking to you wouldn’t be terrible if you stopped asking such personal questions.”
Yeah, that was fair. “Well, in that case, I’ll allow you to ask me one in return, or let you pick an entirely new topic.”
Jase hummed, fingers resting on his chin as he sat there considering his options. “That shield you summoned, that wasn’t a piece of tech, was it?”
“Yes, and no.” Donatello twirled his hand, summoning a small spy drone to rest on his palm. “It’s a special ability I have that allows me to construct tech using... magical energy, in simple terms.”
“What, are you serious?” Jase rested his chin on his hand. “That’s just busted.”
Donatello laughed. “Indeed, it can be. It is, however, limited to things I know how to actually build piece by piece.”
“Oh, such a limitation for someone like you.” The sarcasm in his friend’s voice couldn’t be more obvious. “But does that mean you could like... make a giant mech?”
“Why, do you want to parade one around town again?”
“I wouldn’t be opposed.” Jase cracked a smile.
“Too bad, I haven’t worked on the schematics for something of that scale.”
“Well I have.” He sat up straight again and held out his up as the water approached with the jug. “We’ll just have to compare notes.”
“Does that mean you want to hang out again?”
“To build a giant mech? Of course. Just when are you free again?”
Donatello grinned, not quite able to figure out the light feeling in his chest. His legs swung back and forth under the table, trying to get some of the giddy feelings out of his system. “I have plenty of free time, just name a time and place. Oh, oh, what kind of equipment do you want it to have?”
“Laser guns might be a bit much for a joy ride.” Jase snickered. “But oh, this one should have some audio systems. We could have it belt out dramatic lines, or hit the block with some music.”
“Dramatic lines? I bet I could pull some out of the dozens of Jupiter Jim movies we have at home.”
Jase actually snorted when he laughed, covering his nose. “Jupiter Jim? You’re into corny, old sci-fi?”
“Excuse you, but Jupiter Jim is a classic.” Donatello pointed at him. “Just what kind of shows are you into?”
“Well, not to drop the big plot twist, but it’s robots. Transformers and Gundam in particular are...”
The conversation continued, for an amount of time that Donatello didn’t even keep track of. It didn’t feel like a long time, not in the slightest, but the evidence was stacked against him when he finally looked back at the restaurant to see it mostly empty.
“Hueso.” Donatello hissed as he paid his tab while Jase went to the bathroom. “You should have told me it was getting so late.”
“Nonsense.” Hueso took the cash with a smile. “I did not want to interrupt your date.”
Donatello’s eyes went wide and his hands froze in midair as Hueso walked off to the register.
Then finally, his brain caught up.
“My WHAT?”

hi maybe youve talked about these things before but eyah i have questions for you
in general
which oc was the hardest to design/make/figure out?
which oc would win in a fight?
put the oc you've most recently thought of/most recently worked on into game you've played most recently. are they okay?
for spring specifically:
how would she describe home?
how does she sleep? both the process of her falling asleep, her routines, does she dream, as well as whether her unique design/biology affect her rest in any way
does she listen to music? do you think any songs represent her especially well?
HAI. SORRY MOST OF THESE IF NOT ALL ARE GONNA BE ABOUT SPRING BECAUSE SHE TAKES UP MOST OF MY BRAIN SPACE AS OF LATE also apologies for answering this late!!!!! i fell asleep very quickly after making the send me asks posts, i apologize! - definitely spring. mech isn't really something i've tried my hand at before making her honestly, but the challenge has been INCREDIBLY fun. i think moreso designwise she's a bit of a hurdle because i have to think of all the parts of her and how they move and how they'd fit and what she can scrap together - this isn't a character i've really mentioned on here, but probably my character siall, simply because he essentially has the power of a demigod. - spring is goin' into halo ce.... she's probably not going to survive. sorry - spring has a lot of places that are home to her, so i'll go through them all her original home, at least when she thinks of it now, feels distant and cloudy. she's incredibly nostalgic about it and tends to feel a lot of complicated emotions when she thinks about it her semi, while odd at first, quickly became home, HER home, to her. she started decorating the back and filling it with little trinkets and things she likes. she likes to gently braid the wires in her spare time i don't have the best idea of these last few since i'm still deciding what she does after finally finding her mom, but her basically adoptive father's house feels like visiting a relative's house for a few days and staying the night, even if she's there for a while. a sort of odd but comfortable sense and finally, her mom's current house, with her new husband and his daughter spring goes here about as much as she goes to her adoptive father's house, maybe even less. it feels... stifling, for a lack of better words. she has a lot of complicated emotions every time she goes there. - actually, how she sleeps isn't something i've thought about too much, but i assume that when her power gets low when using her body, she simulates something sort of similar to exhaustion? i don't think she dreams, maybe unless she's on low power mode. i don't know, i really love this question though and i will put more thought into this !! - and finally, yeah she does listen to music! since she spends so much time driving for so long, she listens to a lot of stuff. i haven't decided on what she specifically likes yet, but maybe some more synth inspired things? only reason i want to do that is because my brother listens to a LOT of vaporwave/similar genres, and i think it would be nice to incorporate that into her also. i actually have a playlist for her that's around 60 songs rn? i can send it if you want! it's mainly just songs i either associate with her, that fit her, or i imagine animatics of her to lol THANK YOU FOR ASKING BTW!!!! i lov getting asks so much, even if it can take me a bit, so thank u thank u thank u have an amazing day

Dude I had a Mechanisms dream again and I'm going quite insane and also I am upset at my body for waking up at a very bad moment for no reason at all much earlier than I'm supposed to get up.
Basically I was at my cousin's, she lives in a very big city. It's summer, so there's a lot of festivals and shows and all that, both huge expensive ones and small in random locations. There was some sort of small unknown artist festival in some theatre or pub or whatever that was going to last a few days. Unfortunately I couldn't afford it even though it was fairly cheap, but they had an artist I wanted to check out on the first day. So since I couldn't buy a ticket, I decided to sit by the building where it took place and listen through the walls and windows, and in the end I had a pretty good time.
The next day, I'm thinking if I wanna do the same thing even though I didn't know any of the other artists, when it turned out that the Mechanisms are gonna play there, a decision made last minute because of some planning issue, there was an empty slot between other bands or something? But in that dream it wasn't the actual pirates, but it wasn't just straight up their actors either, something kind of in-between, they weren't their fictional characters but they weren't exactly real people, I'm not sure what was the deal with that. Like, it wasn't the real man Jonny Sims, it was still Jonny D'Ville, but if Jonny D'Ville was just a regular guy. Either way, the mechanisms died a few years ago and this wasn't supposed to be a huge reunion, more like old friends playing a couple of their songs together. So of course I wanted to go see them, but I still had no money, so I decided to do the same trick as before and sat near the door to the venue a little while before they were supposed to begin. In the end I managed to somehow sneak in unnoticed, and the place was pretty empty, no one really cared for this festival. So of course, since there weren't that many people and no one noticed that I entered without a ticket, I sat in the first row. Eventually the mechs entered the stage, which was just a designated area of the floor in the main room on the same level as the audience. Not every mech was there, there was a bunch of people I didn't know at all, because not every original band member was able to come. They didn't have their costumes either, instead wore casual daily clothes. It seemed like the decision to play there was really last minute. There was Jonny, Brian, Tim, and I think Marius. I was, obviously, extremely excited to see them, even if the whole band couldn't be there. They weren't going to play a whole album, just a couple random songs from across their discography. I remember that when they started playing due to some dream bullshit my sister was suddenly in the audience with me? They started with Old King Cole, and it was great. I don't remember the next song, but it was one of the ttbt ones.
And then, almost everyone left the stage except for one person I didn't know that was supposed to play a few very rare unreleased mech songs, and in the meantime the rest of the band just hung out in the venue. So because it was a dream and some dreams are pretty much just fanfics that your brain unconsciously writes, Tim and Brain sat next to us. And like I said, they all were something weirdly between the immortal space pirate character and the real person. Like, they were all still fictional characters, but they weren't these specific characters? Kind of like if they were actually immortal guys with silly names and their silly personalities, but the space pirate part was made up. Anyway, these two sat next to us, and I tried extremely hard not to fangirl all over the place. We all were watching the short solo performance, and at some point my chair turned into like an office chair on wheels or something, idk dream logic. Gunpowder Tim was sitting slightly behind me, and I wanted to casually roll back to kinda have him in my field of vision while he's there, for fangirl reasons. But I accidentally rolled my chair across his foot and I panicked, I just hurt the guy I was a fan of, he's surely gonna leave because of that and he'll hate me. I started apologizing, but he was just like, chill literally nothing happened my toes arent made of glass it's not a big deal. I still felt horrible though so I kept saying I'm sorry and if there's anything I can do as an apology. My sister was just kinda laughing at me for embarrassing myself, Brian didn't have any big reactions, he was more focused on the performance. Tim eventually laughed that as an official apology I could write a letter to his character. He said that half jokingly but I got excited at the opportunity to, as I put it then, write a lil bit of fan fiction on request of the og creator, so I agreed. He was like, cool, then write it right now. It kinda seemed like he wanted to like, embarrass me further but not in a mean way, more in a playful friendly way. So I produced a piece of paper and a pen out of nowhere and started writing something with the paper on my lap, hurrying before the main performance resumes and they all go back on the stage. While I was working on that Tim moved his chair closer and I shit you not he leaned his head on my shoulder and watched my writing. I was, of course, internally screaming and exploding. Like he was fully leaning on me while I was writing a silly letter to the character he played. It felt like he was very aware of how much I was fangirling in my mind and making me flustered amused him.
Aaaand that's when I woke up. I have no idea why, it was 5:40 in the morning, I'm supposed to get up in like two hours, there wasn't any noise that woke me up or anything, but in the last couple days I've been waking up weird early. Just sucks that it happened while I was having a very silly nice dream lmao

Eastward: Afterward Thoughts
Tumblr media
Game: Eastward (September 16, 2021)
Console: PC (Via Xbox Game Pass)
Here I am once again. Crawling back here to give my thoughts on a game I played but having to share it in shame on a side tumblr no one follows instead of proudly in the open on a big ass twitter thread! How sad!
I was going to share my thoughts in a twitter thread, but after sharing my thoughts on Warioware: Get It Together, it seems like twitter has removed the way it keeps threads nice and tidy on the home page. Basically resulting in everyone having to see my thread about the game full force whether they like it or not. And I don’t want that because A) it’s annoying. And B) some games I talk about have huge spoilers. Like this game! So I figured until that little issue gets resolved I’ll just share my thoughts here... where no one visits... and no one follows... Just like the sad city of Potrock Isle, am I right fellow Eastward heads? (That’s what we call ourselves)
I suppose it’s for the best. As always, this is NOT a review! These are just my thoughts and feelings after finishing the game. If you’re interested in this game at all, please consider playing it! This should not be taken as a major critique of the game and will just be me spitballing my feelings.
SPOILER WARNING FOR EASTWARD AHEAD! I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE FINALE AND ENDING A LOT!!
Opening
So, I’ve had my eyes on Eastward for a while now. The only issue is that I knew it was going to be, for lack of a better term, a “Zelda Like”. Which is generally not a genre I like very much. But the art and sprites and general aesthetic of the game was SO amazing I absolutely could not keep away! And after an accident that lead to me buying gamepass for an extra month (it was an accident I swear) I figured I might as well go ahead and play Eastward. I did struggle a bit with the genre but I made it through and ultimately I had a pretty good time with it!
Stuff I liked
Where to begin? This game is AMAZINGLY CHARMING! Maybe one of the most charming games I’ve played in a while. It has, hands down, some of the most amazing sprite art I’ve ever seen in my life. This game looks SO good it’s nuts! Here’s some screenshots I took that look that hopefully can demonstrate even a little bit how good Eastward looks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The combination of 2D sprite art mixed with the more realistic lighting kinda makes my lizard brain go nuts. In short, the game looks REALLY FUCKING GOOD. Almost every little thing in this game is lovingly handmade by some of the most talented sprite artists I’ve ever seen. Animations are stunning, backgrounds are incredibly detailed and full of life. The visuals ROCK!
The music is also particularly really good and has a ton of fantastic songs that really stuck with me. It has a lot of nice fast paced music and a lot of slow and mysterious music. But it all really does feel like one OST, like all the songs really go together. It’s another aspect of the game that’s just amazing!
I also LOVE the story and characters! It has a lot of themes similar to Gurren Lagann. People live miserably underground. Someone has seen the surface but gets picked on cause they’re stuck underground. They reach the surface but shit’s fucked up there. But of course instead of Beastmen and Mechs. Eastward goes a bit more of a lowkey route with cities filled with people, beautiful nature, and an evil smoke spewing train controlled by a factory where they make humans... It’s a lot of crazy shit but I do love crazy shit like this in my stories. Figuring out the mystery behind Charon and the Human Factories and Sam was all really exciting and made for a really compelling story!
And of course the characters are what made the story so nice. Of course John and Sam are my absolutely favorites! They are SO cute! But even side characters like William and Daniel. Alva and Isabelle. They’re all super charming and everyone has a GREAT design. No one has a better design than John and Sam though.
The gameplay itself is also very good. Again I struggled a lot with it at some points. This is just not my speed. And I do think this would have been GOTY for all time if it was a turnbased RPG (I think a lot of games would be the best game ever made if they were turnbased JRPGs instead). But still I enjoyed it enough. Some combat was pretty fun, some of the bosses were very cool. And some of the puzzles were challenging but pretty fun to solve. I particularly liked cooking a lot of food with power+ properties and just crushing boss battles with all my strength!
And then the game itself is just filled to the brim with so much charming stuff. I love the weapons like the guns and bombs, I love the you use a frying pan instead of a sword. The save points are fridges you freeze your memories in. I love that you can cook, and gather ingredients and try to make new recipes and season them with different spices to get different buffs. I love the super unique and cool enemy designs. I love how charming and memorable and unique every single NPC in the game is. No repeating NPCs as far as I can remember. Everyone is unique. Some games have bonus card games or sports minigames. But Eastward has a full blown roguelike RPG in it! I didn’t beat it, but it’s there and it’s SUPER charming!
So, yeah! This game is REALLY good! Easily one of if not the best looking game I played last year. Amazing soundtrack, fantastic story and characters. It’s all really good! It’s clearly a game that a TON of work went into. I can tell tons of talented people poured their soul into this game. Down to the website where they have cute little clay figures of some characters! It’s made with love.
Stuff I didn’t like
However, just like any other game. Eastward isn’t perfect. I could go on about little things. I think some of the dungeons are really infuriating. Old Town in particular was a real headache for me. I think WAY too many of the enemies towards the end of the game charge you then run away so you can’t hit them, it’s so annoying and time consuming. I think the game can be a little too raunchy and edgy at times in ways that aren’t really fun? Sometimes it is. But not all the time. I think the game can be TOO detailed sometimes and it actually makes figuring out where to go a little difficult.
But no, I COULD go on about smaller stuff like that. But I think I mostly just want to talk about the finale and ending. While this game was great, and stays consistently quirky and charming until the very end. With amazingly high quality sprite art and music until the very last drop. But honestly, I think this game totally loses focus towards the end. Particularly, the moment you reach Ester City, Eastward almost completely lost me.
I saw others saying it was the Monkollywood Train. And while that section wasn’t that great. With a forced stealth section that goes on a little too long. And being a really random scene. I actually thought Monkollywood was fine and honestly, the weirdness of that area didn’t feel out of place from the rest of the game. I guess Ester City also isn’t out of place. But it certainly is where the game loses itself in my opinion.
So the whole story up to that point was about finding out what was going on with Charon and the Human Factories and the origin of Sam. And I like that a lot. And I liked that once you reach New Dam City, it’s about living life and running jobs through the city. I liked that a lot. It was different from the main goal but it still related to Charon right? But once you hit Ester City, man. It suddenly becomes all about the tower. And time travel. And time loops. And I honestly kind of forgot Charon and the Human Factories were still what was happening. The whole game suddenly becomes about Alva and Isabelle. Which is fine. But like, it’s about them for most of the finale. And they’re not even there for most of that finale!
And then suddenly we jump back to the human factory and charon out of nowhere! I do think the final dungeon being inside Charon was great. And it’s not that I think the whole Ester City stuff was bad necessarily. But it absolutely was BORING as hell and slowed my playthrough to a crawl. It feels like they suddenly through a bunch of plot elements in I was too stupid to understand. And sadly I feel like this kind of carries into the whole ending. It feels like NOTHING gets answered or explained.
That’s not entirely true. We do see what becomes of some characters. And I don’t think the game needs to answer everything to be good. I think it’s good to leave some mystery. But. What became of Charon? The human factories? What was Sam exactly??? Did we save the world? Is everyone dead? I assume not based on the ending but like... What happened? I don’t understand anything that happened! I feel like this is maybe my fault and Ester City was so boring that I struggled to pay real attention to the finale so I couldn’t understand it. I honestly feel like the ending would have been better if when John sees Sam again, Sam just drops the big lead she’s holding and the game just ends right there. Like you already didn’t show enough of the ending, you might as well show even less and make that shot give me some clue in to what happened to John and Sam afterward.
And just in general. I didn’t like the final boss. I thought it was upsetting how the whole finale of the game randomly became quickdraw minigames. I know they were prepping you for it the whole way through with minigames but I wanted the final boss to be a real fight! I cooked all this food with power+ seasonings! And I didn’t really get to use it!
Final Thoughts
It’s hard to explain. The whole game still feels fine. I still like it. I still think it’s incredibly charming. I still think it’s one of the nicest looking games ever, I still think it’s absolutely worth your time even if you don’t like this genre! But I can’t help but feel like the ending was massively rushed. Like it needed more time? Or that it needed more planning. If the ending just worked a little better with the rest of the game I think this would have been perfect. The game had small pacing issues the whole way through though, so maybe I should have seen it coming. But still! It’s sad!
Regardless, Eastward is an amazing game that clearly had a lot of love poured into it. So I don’t regret playing it. And I think I might honestly want to cosplay as John eventually. I still think John and Sam are amazing protagonists (I was waiting the WHOLE game for her to call him dad UGH... maybe that’s just me.) Eastward was absolutely worth my time and I’m glad I played it even with the underwhelming finale. I’ll certainly be interested in any follow ups they make for the game in the future. We’ll see.
===
Thank you for reading! It’s been a while since I’ve written up an afterthoughts on tumblr. But it’s looking like I’ll be doing this here for a while since I kinda can’t on twitter at the moment. It’s a little harder for me to keep my thoughts confined over here so it makes writing these posts more difficult. But I’ll do my best, because I love talking about video games!
As always you can follow me on twitter to keep up with me, my art, and my game playing habits! That’s it for now! Go out and play a game you wouldn’t normally try!

I'd have to go with Ashes. Just barely.
who (if anyone!) is your least favorite member of your favorite band? Okay there is no mech I don't like, but my least favorite is probably Marius JUST because he doesn't get rotated around in my brain as much as the others do (I still love him a lot though)
name an album you’ve wanted to listen to for a long time, but you haven’t gotten around to it yet
The fool in her wedding gown by the crane wives. I've listened to some of the songs from it and I really like them, I just haven't gotten around to listening to the whole album yet

this was an interesting question, made my brain hurt a bit because i know precisely nothing of dancing outside of theater/stage performance. for simplicity’s sake, i’m going to ignore dances done primarily in alt mode, like aerial acrobatics, trick driving, synchronal lightshows which look like this in my head, and so on. i think these make sense though. ty discord friends for helping ^3^
Velocitronian spiral skating: so you know how many Velocitronians with wheeled pedes can fold up their kibble to essentially rollerskate? That has led to a very pretty form of dancing, consisting of long, smooth loops and whorls and spins and switches, carefully tracing out a pattern in the desert that matches the music (unless of course you’ve got a whole party of people, in which case it turns into a huge linedance creating very large uneven patterns for fun). Some songs have set spiral patterns traditionally associated with them, some have a million variations, and some leave it up to the dancers. Competitions require both fast, fluid movement from dancers and a perfect pattern of tire tracks. Cooperative “sky skating” isn’t quite as easy to judge, since tracing patterns with contrails isn’t nearly as permanent as dirt, but it still requires incredible coordination to get both ground and aerial dancers creating the same lines
Vosian ballet: now, given that flying in root mode is not a thing in this particular continuity, there aren’t a lot of literal flying leaps and swooping arcs. However, in this case the limitations have only forced the artists to excel in their art. Careful hovering, precise steps, and perfect balance make this a difficult and physically demanding dance that requires a lot of practice, but the end result is stunning. Since hovering is an integral part of the dance, it’s meant for flight frames, and only individuals with strong thrusters and good control are successful. Even though the traditional performances don’t involve any transforming to alt mode, ballet is still thought of as a flying art form
Bip bop: also known as beep boop or beebop depending on where you are. A very fun, free sort of dance that gets people twisting and bouncing to the beat of a party. Really good dancers can flash their biolights in time with the motions and music, almost as if they are a one-mech rave. Dance battles are common in bip bop, and new steps, tricks, and showy moves are invented all the time. There’s very few set rules or certain orders to follow, it’s all about moving with the music
Carcerian “universal greeting”: absolutely inspired by Maori haka because I admire haka so much. Originally, it was a challenge issued between communities or families on Carcer, designed to intimidate. Clashing armor, loud yelling, big movements, intense faces. An entire group would do it in sync in a dance battle of sorts. Nowadays, it’s used as a greeting and gesture of respect for non-Carcerians, hence why it’s jokingly called the “universal greeting”. Sports teams from Carcer will perform one prior to their games, sometimes shattering the confidence of their opponents before the game has even begun. Non-Carcerian misunderstanding and condescending stigma has led to the incorrect assignation of nonsense “lyrics” to go along with the dance. But if you say Bah-weep-Graaaaagnah wheep ni ni bong to anyone from Carcer, the only thing you’ll accomplish is getting laughed at
Tarnish kicking jig: this is The most well known piece of Tarnish art throughout Cybertron. It’s a lot harder than good dancers make it look, especially if you have ungainly or unbalanced kibble. It takes a very skilled mech indeed to perform this with an onyxoid frametype. It’s focused on leg movements, stiff posture, and momentum to keep stepping. Without good balance and steady pedes, a dancer will topple backwards immediately. Of course, given that these are beings made of metal dozens of feet tall, they are Very heavy. More than one floor has been damaged, more than one knee has been kicked, and more than one helm has been bonked trying to learn this dance
Fight dancing: like the “universal greeting”, this dance is considered unusual and even barbaric for its inherent unnecessary violence. It began on Eukaris and quickly spread to Velocitron and Carcer, a beautiful cross between a battle and an artform. In some places it’s considered a martial art like metallikato or boxing, but that was never the intention. It takes all the strength, competence, and danger of true fighting and disguises it within the grace, allure, and flashiness of dancing. Dancers use both acrobatic showiness and genuine strikes, practicing with partners until they know how to refrain from hurting someone on accident
Square dancing: a good old-fashioned classic farmyard dance, this is the type of dance you’re likely to encounter out in rural communities. Even with a bunch of variants, the steps are simple and quick to pick up on, so anyone can jump in. It’s a staple of community gatherings out in the countryside of Luna 1 and 2 or uncolonized wild planets, when isolated people can come together and socialize and have fun
Swing dancing: this is a showstopper dance, fast-paced and groovy. It’s made to fit partners of different size classes, often leading to one dancer being literally swung by the other, and other moves that take advantage of the size difference. While it’s good for parties, it really shines in choreography, lending itself well to the stage for musicals and other shows. It first originated on Devisiun, where it was one of the few dances created with partners other than siblings in mind. But it caught on rapidly in other places and has since become widespread, with too many varieties to count
Camien ballroom dancing: no new art for it as i’ve drawn a rather ridiculous duo dancing here, but this type of dancing is usually the opposite of ridiculous. Measured and stately and showy, ballroom dancing originated on Caminus before being popularized across planets as a traditional “upper class” type of dance. Of course, it’s been around for half of history and has outlived multiple cultures’ worth of upper class, so it’s hardly exclusive. Most dances of this type are designed to visually show off how well two partners fit together. The sweeps and steps work in time with ruffling armor, flaring kibble, and pulsing biolights to make a private display of living art
Street tap: ran out of art juice before I could draw this one but. Street tap is mostly a junker dance, adapted from other mainstream jigs and tap dances. It’s one of the few junker artforms that is widespread through communities across the planet, instead of being insular by city or local group. It varies by location, of course, but it’s always used for the same thing: code. Junkers are notorious for their code, and they’ve developed a system of taps, clicks, hits, and rattles that can signal anyone listening. Out in the open, street tap is more likely to look like an accident, such as a stumble on a rough street, a skittering cane across pavement, an idle drum of the hands on plating, to surreptitiously communicate with other junkers. In full dance form, entire stories can be told without spoken or signed word, just through the pattern of the tap. It’s a difficult skill to fully master, both because you need a strong, healthy frame to perform well, and because there are so many pieces of code to memorize even in a single city that it can take forever, not to mention learning to weave them together into a meaningful dance. Junker leaders like Wreck-Gar are often experts, although of course he’d never let anyone know street tap even exists if they aren’t a junker
Trendy dances: also didn’t draw this one because I can’t face the humiliation of trying to draw a riff on a TikTok dance. In a civilization of very advanced tech, yes there is social media, yes it generates stupid trends, yes some of those trends are dances. some of them are deliberately designed to take advantage of certain common (or uncommon!) features, like amalgoid, onyxoid, or quintoid frametypes, certain kibble placement, big biolights, or even natural noisemakers like sirens and whistles. These dances are quick to rise and fade, filtering through communication systems on their brief bursts of popularity

Do you have any thoughts on Prison Mechs as a ship?
once again- so sorry this took so long!
prison mechs!!
marius and ivy take turns preening raphaella’s wings! she goes bone-limp when it occurs and makes the sweetest chirruping noises unconsciously
marius very much keeps the other two entertained in the time they spent imprisoned (this man is a ball of chaos)
all of them can very easily leave, and so they have regular date-nights together. lyf does look the other way, because they always come back.
(they do extend an invite to lyf soon after they realise that lyf’s noticed their escapades, and the trio does end up gaining a member soon afterwards, but that’s for another post)
ivy can project spfilms (space films) from her brain, and so they spent a lot of their time cuddling and watching things
raph and ivy prefer spdocumentaries normally, though raph is definitely a fan of ripping scifi spfilms to shreds.
marius likes romcoms. the other two do mock him for this
ivy also reads aloud to the others. she tries really hard to surprise them each time, and so tends to translate pieces from planets that fell long before any of them were mechanised
ivy definitely reads raph spsappho (space sappho)
marius writes the other two little songs, just light-hearted little riffs that he bases on his feelings and the others adore him for it
raph and ivy gently bully marius as a form of affection
ivy has nightmares of things pre-mechanisation that she can’t remember upon waking, the others will curl around her, marius at her side and raph at her back with wings curled around them, protecting the trio from the world
raph will hum and gently sing to ivy in these moments, and marius will run his hands through ivy’s hair and allow her to stim by tracing her fingers along the seams of his hands as a way to ground herself post-nightmare.
(this is for my ‘send me something mechs related and i’ll give you headcanons’ post)

Those sad brain headcanons were very yes so can you write some happy ones now? Just to, y’know, balance it out. (also because I'm love him)
Hell yeah!!! Happy Brian time!!!!
There is always some form of music coming from him. Whether he is tapping out a beat or humming a song, he's constantly making music. If other people start humming around him, he WILL harmonize.
This man. Is a literal space heater. I have mentioned this headcanon many times and I will mention it many times more. He is. Warm. Gives the best hugs for this reason. Unfortunately he's not very good at staying still for long periods of time
He's an excellent dancer!! He has the knowledge of how to do different dances basically implanted in his brain and he is. Very good at them. He has the fanciest footwork on Aurora and the others envy him.
He has a small garden on Aurora that he cherishes dearly and spends a lot of time on. He collects plant life from every planet the crew visits and keeps a logbook of what their scientific names are, where he found them, details about the genotype and phenotype, and other assorted information for each plant. He also attempts to crossbreed them on occasion. He has created some truly interesting flowers that way.
He has a little notebook that he carries around and records observations of the different places he visits and inspiration he gets from them. He also really loves to people watch and sometimes writes little stories about the people he sees.
He talks to himself a lot, he doesn't often realize he's doing it. The Mechs have walked in on him absentmindedly giving entire science lectures to octokittens.
He likes to explore new ways to enhance the others' mechanisms, they don't often let him actually add the enhancements, because they're a bit afraid of becoming even more fucked up, but he writes them down just in case. Raph lets him do work on her wings though, and he's also the go-to for fixing Tim's eyes up (this has extreme angst potential if you've read my most recent fic, but these are happy headcanons so we're going to ignore that)
He has a very gentle, shy laugh that actually isn't often heard (it's quite hard to make Brian laugh out loud) but when it is it is cherished by everyone around
And there you have it!!! I love this man so very much thank you for letting me ramble about him!!!

Mechs dance headcanons
I made a quiz about this, these are the answers. Mechs dancing has been living in my brain for weeks
1. Jonny does line and square dance
Texan Jonny stuff lives on my brain rent free, he mostly likes it because you need a few people to do it and it's pretty informal. He knows quite a few of folk dances from planets all around the galaxy, because he likes the social affair that comes with it wherein you don't need to put in a lot of effort to get to know people on a lowkey level. You can sometimes find him doing the steps through the halls, mumbling the instructions under his breath. He also knows moves from the showgirls in Jacks casino, but will rarely do those
2. Nastya does ballet
Instert "it means I know how to crush you with my feet" meme. Did she hate every ballet lesson ever? Yes. Is she grateful she can do it now? Also yes. It is great to do with Aurora, since she can provide music and the bars. It also gave her the balance that helped with her new heavy blood. She also likes tricking other mechs in dancing with her, only to laugh at them when they fail, some surprised her though (i have opinions about which ones, but I'll allow you to fill in your own mental picture)
3. Ashes does the  waltz
I know this was one of the options on my very first quiz, but I love Ashes who does the waltz. They are a pro at leading and will gracefully sweep their partner across the room, no matter how many left feet they have. With Ashes is the only occasion TS can do the waltz, which delights it to no end
4. Ivy rhythmic gymnastics
Is this classified as dancing? Not sure. Ivy likes the ribbon and will use it as bookmark from time to time. She first read about it and then got really excited. She taught herself along with Nastya and it's something they still do together. With her training it makes it really easy for others to lift her, which she uses when dancing with someone else. Though she mostly likes that it can be done alone, it helps keep her mind off things
5. Brian does the tango
Tango is all about the beat and Brian is very good at that. He also likes how intimate it gets and how much you have to know the other to be fully in sync. He also likes to dip, twirl and lift people, which he is very good at with his metal body. It also isn't too unusual for a man to get lead, and Ashes often leads for him, which is always very fun
6. TS does one-step
This is leftover from the old lady, but it doesn't mind as much since it was created for social situations and it is the best dance for talking. During dancing the others are much more likely to be in a good mood and TS enjoys talking to them whenever they dance. It likes being dipped, but it also loves turning
7. Tim does tapdance
He likes stomping his feet, that was how he got into it in the first place. Now he mostly does it to irritate or delight fellow mechs. Some of their songs were born of Tims bored tapdancing. He also dances morsecode from time to time, but that's mostly when thinking about the moon war. He learned tap dancing with Bertie.
8. Marius does the quickstep
My boy saw people do fast steps and turns and was sold. He took lessons back home and prefected it through the ages. He mostly likes using his metal arm to practically throw his partner in the right direction when they're failing to keep up. It took a while for him to be able to dance properly with the new weight at his side, Brian was a huge help in getting him back in stepping shape
9. Raph does mating dances and air dances
She loves studying dances from animal life forms and tries to duplicate them. It is not uncommon for her to make weird movements and then tell you which animal seduces mates like that. Depending on the mood of the mech she is seducing, they will shoot her or copy her movements. She also likes sweeping people of their feet, literally, and dancing on air with them. If she is too excited it can be terrifying, but also very fun

afsdgfdhgj!! thank you sm, i’m so happy to hear that :’D that is...something i do very much need to work on actually, i’ve been trying to kick the talking-self-down habit for a while now, it’s just!! it’s tough, guys.
on a lighter note, i know exactly what trope you’re talking about and i’m an unapologetic sucker for it afdsgfdh. unfortunately this probably isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, but i got bit by the idea and it wouldn’t let me go, so here’s a somewhat-short (somewhat) fic about it!
Sometimes, the ninja forget they’re technically, kind-of-sort-of, famous. Like, not all the time, because some people are creepy and won’t leave them well enough alone, and some people are just…really enthusiastic…but for the most part, it is easy to forget sometimes, because out of gi they look pretty normal.
(Until Lloyd’s eyes start shuffling through colors like a sporadic traffic light, of course, but that doesn’t happen as much now.)
The point is, sometimes it’s easy to forget that they’re famous.
Sometimes, though — when movie posters the size of the Bounty are plastered all over the city because some wise guy thought making a film about them would be a great idea — it’s harder to forget.
“This feels like an invasion of privacy,” Cole mutters, crossing his arms as he sinks deeper into the theater seat.
“Oh, yeah,” Nya says. “Because trading cards and entire news documentaries with our full names and intimate dating life details were one thing, but a loosely-based movie is where we draw the line.”
“Intimate dating life my foot,” Lloyd scowls, clearly far from getting over that one article that managed to snag a picture of him and Harumi before…everything.
“Well — yeah, fair, but like—” Cole sputters. “They hired actors to play us. They’re gonna be recreating our lives and it’s — it’s weird, okay?”
“I dunno, I think it’s pretty cool,” Kai says, already on his third mouthful of popcorn, and the trailers have’t even started yet. “I mean, it can’t be worse than that play they put on, right?”
“Don’t jinx it,” Zane mutters darkly, his eyes flashing at the reminder.
“I’m with Kai,” Jay says, bouncing in his seat as he reaches for the popcorn. “I think it’s cool that people care enough about us to make a movie, you know? Like, did you see the budget for this thing?”
“Was it as high as the repair cost for the tower we blew up last week?” Lloyd says.
“Uh…maybe. I didn’t compare, exactly. But look, you can’t put a price on lives. A little collateral damage is worth it.”
“A little?” Zane says, his eyebrows shooting up.
“Eh, we helped clean it up,” Nya shrugs. “That counts.”
Jay points at her. “Thank you.”
“Still say it wasn’t my fault,” Kai grumbles, crossing his arms. Lloyd pokes him in the ribs, and Kai yelps, flinching away from him. “Not cool, not cool!”
“We’re definitely not going to make it through this movie without getting thrown out,” Cole groans into his hands. They’re already getting looks from the movie-goers around them, and their patience doesn’t look like it’s going to last very long.
“C’mon, have a little optimism,” Jay placates. “This is gonna be fun— hey, that’s my popcorn!”
“No way, lightning brain, I bought it, I hold it.”
“But you bought it with Nya’s money.”
“Which she stole from Lloyd’s sock drawer this morning, so that doesn’t count.”
“Wait, you stole my sock money?”
“Um…call it payback for stealing the last of the cookies last week.”
“How is that a fair trade, I only took one!”
“Yeah, one dozen—”
“Guys, please—”
“You’re one to talk, you stole all the—”
“Would you all shut up, it’s starting, and — I said shut up!”
******************
It takes a few threats of murder, and one or two threats of open power-use to the face, but they quiet down in time for the opening credits.
The movie begins peacefully enough, with an older man telling some ‘punk little kid’ as Kai describes him, a whole lot of ‘stereotypical sensei mumbo jumbo’ as Lloyd describes it, about himself. Which, to be fair, is pretty accurate to their lives, so they’re able to quietly munch on popcorn for the first few minutes, at least.
But then the plot starts.
“What do they mean, ‘uh oh’, to Lloyd Garmadon?” Kai frowns. “The city loves you.”
Lloyd shrugs, tossing a mouthful of popcorn back. “I dunno,” he says. “I mean, it is tough to be that kid.”
“Yeah, ‘cause he’s the worst shortie ever, like four feet tall,” Nya whispers to him. Lloyd elbows her in the side. Zane shushes them, just in time for the actual movie Lloyd to show up on the screen, in bed and receiving a call from—
Lloyd doubles over, choking on his popcorn.
“Luh-Lloyd?” Kai says, in delight. “Luh-Lloyd?!”
“Pajamas,” Lloyd wheezes, as Nya thumps his back. “Look at his pajamas, I gotta buy my dad those—”
The others are left to giggle their way through the interpretation of one of their greatest enemies snacking on cereal in printed pajamas, telling Lloyd he ‘must’ve butt-dialed him’. It’s hysterical until Garmadon forgets Lloyd’s birthday, and the Lloyd onscreen gets the signature Sad Puppy Eyes Lloyd Look on his face — which, props to the actor, he nailed it — and everyone looks to Lloyd in sympathy.
“That’s rough, buddy,” Jay pats his shoulder. Lloyd rolls his eyes.
“It’s not me,” he says, shrugging again. Really, his dad forgetting his birthday is like, incredibly tame, compared to hurling him through a prison wall or six.
Now, forgetting he existed, that stings. But also, like, this isn’t his dad, so. Eh. He doesn’t really care.
“Is that supposed to be Misako?”
Never mind. He cares now.
“Are you—” Kai plasters a hand over his mouth, muffling this next part. “—kidding me?!”
“Oh, she’s, uh…really present, huh,” Cole winces, as ‘Koko’ encourages her son about being himself, and other really nice stuff Lloyd would have super appreciated hearing when he was younger.
He opens his mouth again, and Nya takes the opportunity to stuff more popcorn in it. Lloyd chomps down angrily, glaring at the screen and grumbling under his breath.
“At least you’ve shown up at all,” Jay comforts him. Lloyd is very much not comforted. He just wants to get through the rest of the movie in peace, and shift the focus off of him as quick as possible.
Oh boy, is he disappointed.
Like, he gets a few minutes of relief as the others are introduced, but that’s all, really. Even if it is hilarious.
“Hello, fellow teen.”
Cole makes a sound like a dying balloon, and Jay almost coughs popcorn out of his nose. Zane just presses his lips into a flat line, his expression unreadable. “I do not…know how to feel about this.”
Jay and Kai are doubled-over on each other by now, choking on laughter. Cole, bless him, is doing his absolute best not to burst into giggles, while Nya and Lloyd have given up and are full-out cackling.
“Well,” Zane says, eyeing them with a gleam in his eye. “Perhaps I should start updating my database with ‘teen lingo’ then—”
“No!” they all chorus in unison, waving frantically at Zane, earning several dirty looks from the people around them as they do.
“You’re perfect the way you are, buddy,” Jay says hastily.
Kai, at least, seems pretty steadily in character—
“Aw, look, I almost snapped your spine.”
“That’s a Kai hug, for sure.”
—and Nya’s thrilled about having a motorcycle. Jay’s a tad indignant at his character’s stuttering, but Cole reminds him he has zero room to talk, so Jay shuts up in time for Cole to shrug at his own portrayal.
“I like that shirt,” he remarks. “And those headphones are cool.”
Then the reality of the scene they’re watching sinks in.
“Wait, why are we in school?” Zane blinks, confused.
“Why are they being so mean to you?” Cole exclaims at Lloyd, taken aback.
Lloyd makes a face at the cheerleaders on screen, jerking his shoulder up as if to say ‘like I know’. Which is kind of a lie, because he does know, the movie told them, but he’s not gonna get into that. Kai is already fuming in his seat beside him, growing steadily angrier by the second. “Who do they think they are,” he hisses. “I’ll show them a number one hit.”
Lloyd rips his eyes from the screen, watching Kai in mild alarm. “Kai, you know that’s not actually me, right?”
“—tear those kids a new one—”
Lloyd cringes at the looks they’re getting from the people around them, patting Kai’s arm. “Chill out, Kai, seriously. This is like, basic Darkley’s stuff, don’t worry. And I walked away from that fine.”
Wrong thing to say. Kai swivels on him, his eyes flashing. “Wait. This happened to you at Darkley’s? For real?”
“Um…” Lloyd sweats briefly, the sounds of Boo Lloyd! coming from the screen really not helping at all. “I mean, I was a brat. I brought a lot of it on myself.”
Kai looks like he’s going to combust. “I swear—”
“Kai,” Lloyd interrupts, trying to quell the storm. “It’s fine. Seriously. I mean, there was this one time that four guys way bigger than me ganged up and hung me from a roof by my hoodie all night, but it wasn’t that bad. I’m fine.”
Kai’s face turns thunderous, matching the roar of Garmadon finally coming into view onscreen. “Wasn’t that bad?” he says, incredulous, gaining them several shh’s, mainly from Nya. Kai ignores them. “Point me to those punks, Lloyd, I’ll strangle ‘em—”
“Kai.”
“Wha — oh. Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“That — that was different.”
“Uh-huh.”
“…you — you weren’t there all night.”
“I sure was.”
“Oh.”
“Mm-hm.”
“Um. Sor…rry?”
Fortunately, both are saved by Garmadon smashing his way on screen in a giant shark mech with a full-scale crustacean-themed army, to which the ninja kind of just…stare. That’s — that’s the best they can do with that one. That, and be thankful Garmadon himself isn’t here to see this.
“I mean, to be fair, I can see him appreciating a song entirely about himself,” Kai mutters, as the chorus continues to yell about Garmadon!. “And — wait, Lloyd, are you filming this?”
“Uh, yeah?” Lloyd says, re-adjusting the zoom feature on his phone. “Now hush, I wanna save this and make it my ringtone.”
******************
The mechs are, admittedly, cool. Their total lack of ability to do Spinjitzu, way less so.
“That’s so not how Spinjitzu works,” Nya scoffs, as Sensei Wu finally makes an appearance, just in time for Lloyd to request wind as an element, which brings on another bout of choking.
“Oh, for crying out loud,” Lloyd sighs. He then blinks rapidly. “Wait, where are our powers?”
“Nonexistent, apparently,” Zane murmurs. “Along with our common sense.”
“To be fair, that’s never been a reliable thing in the first place,” Jay points out.
The lack of common sense continues to be a trend throughout the movie, and by the time the ‘Ultimate Weapon’ comes up, things start to go downhill rather fast.
“Which, to continue to be fair, is also pretty in-character. This whole fight kinda is.”
The other ninja grumble in agreement as Lloyd runs off to confront his father alone despite all warning, and Lloyd begins to sink lower into his seat. He has a bad feeling he knows exactly where this is going, and sadly, he isn’t disappointed.
Well, for the most part.
“A cat?” Lloyd yelps, his eyes bugging out. “A giant cat?! How is that fair? All I ever get to fight is creepy part-reptile people who want to suck the power out of me, where do I sign up for this?”
“This is surreal,” Zane remarks, as Meowthra tears her merry way across the screen. The whole scene is a disaster, slo-mo destruction and everything, but it’s pretty much the standard fare they’re used to, so they really don’t bat much of an eye as the cat totally wrecks them.
“Nice to know we can’t catch a break in any universe,” Jay sighs sadly, as his mech is torn apart on screen.
“This movie is really beating the ‘don’t-challenge-dad-solo’ message over the head, huh,” Lloyd mutters, chin in his hand, having recovered from his brief bout of extreme-cat-heart-eyes.
Kai gives him a stink-eye. “Yeah, I wonder why.”
Understandably, the Lloyd onscreen is considerably upset at the apparent destruction of all his friends. The ninja are all incredibly curious as to where the movie is going to go next, though, since this Garmadon celebrates his victory by throwing a pretty sick party instead of building a skyscraper-sized stone Colossi of destruction and wrecking half the city.
“Kind of unfair,” Jay scowls, as the henchman do the conga onscreen. Nya’s got a smart comment to make back, but then the Lloyd onscreen reveals himself —
“In typical dramatic-Lloyd fashion, they got that right.”
“Oh, shut up.”
— and then proceeds to snap at the Garmadon onscreen, “I wish you weren’t my father.”
The theater goes remarkably quiet, as do the ninja. Cautiously, they turn to look at Lloyd, who is staring at the screen with a look on his face similar to if you’d shaken up a soda bottle really hard and were about to take the top off. Then—
“Oh, heck yeah, how’s that for karma, you over-powered conceited jerk of a dad,” Lloyd hisses viciously at the screen, punching his fist in the air. “He’s got the right idea, it’s my turn to start disowning family members. Screw ‘you’re not my son’, I’m gonna pull this one out next time and disown him—!”
“Lloyd,” Nya says, a bit nervously. “You know he’s, uh, he’s crying on screen now, right?”
“Yeah,” Lloyd spits.
“You, uh. You know you are too, right?”
“N-no.”
“Therapy,” Cole whispers to Zane. “So much therapy.”
“I’ve already booked us,” Zane murmurs back, sliding his phone back in his pocket. “If the office can simply manage not get blown for one more week this time, we might actually make it."
******************
While they do, however, manage to stay quiet for most of that scene — and isn’t Cole wildly impressed with them for that — the next scene kind of shoots that victory right into tiny little pieces.
“Why are we being so mean to you now?” Cole exclaims, flabbergasted, as the poor Lloyd onscreen looks seconds from tears, the rest of the team staring down at him with firm glares.
“Shh, this is getting dramatic,” Lloyd hushes him.
Nya gets a look on her face that promises murder, and Kai refuses point-blank to be shushed.
“What a bunch of jerks. We’d never do something like that, I’m going to have words with some people—”
“Jamanakai,” Lloyd just says, wearily. “Rooftop. All night.”
Kai deflates, sinking into his seat. “S’not the same,” he mutters, fiercely. “We never said all those mean things to you.”
Lloyd gently pats his arm. “There, there,” he says. “I know you didn’t mean it.”
“I never said it! It’s — it’s that imposter on screen, that’s who!”
“Kai, I know—”
Lloyd is interrupted by an unfortunately-timed declaration from the onscreen Jay.
“Now, we hate you.”
Lloyd blinks, almost surprised at the slight flare of hurt that sparks in his chest at that. Which is stupid, because these directors don’t know them, and that’s not really Jay, but hey, why not play into his worst fears, movie—
Then “Jay!” is hissed in scandalized unison, and Lloyd stuffs said worst fears back into box and tries not to snicker at the look on his brother’s face.
“It’s not me!” Jay defends desperately, waving his hands wildly. “That’s not me!”
“Deleting all data related to treating Lloyd as a friend.”
Jay is saved as everyone turns on Zane, who just buries his face in his hands. “Let it end,” he moans.
******************
Apart from being shocked that Sensei Wu is actually going with his ninja on their quest for the Ultimately Ultimate Weapon—
“It’s ultimate ultimate, did you miss that trip-inducing scene they explained it with?”
—they aren’t as surprised by things anymore after that, having caught on to the movie’s flow. It’s a little more slapstick than they’re used to, all bright colors and quick action, but it’s enjoyable to watch Garmadon and Sensei Wu snipe at each other, at least.
“Ten bucks says he survives just fine,” Cole says blandly, as Sensei Wu goes plummeting toward the river.
Not one of them take him up on that wager.
“Geez, they’re really roasting us for being morons in this, huh,” Jay observes, as their onscreen counterparts take the clearly-a-trap route, as per Garmadon’s advice.
Lloyd, who is still stewing about having his voice made fun of, bites out, “I think it’s pretty valid, for some of us.”
“Oh, suck it up already, Lloyd. Your voice changed anyways, get over it.”
“Are you saying I sounded ridiculous before?”
“Uh, no-o…?”
“Oh, there we go, getting humiliated again,” Nya sighs, as the ninja are cornered by Garmadon’s ex-generals. “I wonder why they didn’t give us our powers. You’d think they’d have capitalized on that, it’d look pretty cool.”
“Who knows. I’m still trying to figure out if my character’s love for music is a clever reference to me and my dad’s singing background, or just a shallow attempt to give me character at all,” Cole muses. They turn back to the movie just in time to wince in unison as the ninja onscreen flee, leaving Lloyd and Garmadon to be captured.
Kai is less than pleased with this development.
“Oh, so we’re just leaving Lloyd behind now? Who wrote this movie, I wanna talk.”
******************
By the time Garmadon’s teaching Lloyd how to throw bricks from a roof to some sappy soundtrack, then relocating his dislocated shoulder in a wild tone change, they’re mostly lost for words.
Also kind of enjoying the movie, though no one will admit it. The expressions are funny, and there are some lines that hit home. Sure, Lloyd spends a good ten minutes alternating between sputtering and gaping when Garmadon describes their family history, and only proceeds to get worse when everyone else receives powers and he gets a cute little tree branch, but it is fun to watch their onscreen counterparts run around to “I’ve Got the Power” playing cheerfully in the background. Plus, no one tries to ostracize Lloyd again, and it’s oddly satisfying to watch Garmadon get eaten by a giant cat, so by the time Lloyd’s trying to hide suspicious sniffling into the empty popcorn tub while his onscreen counterpart is giving Garmadon his big sappy speech about forgiveness, they might actually give the movie a decent rating.
Cole’s just happy they haven’t been thrown out yet, because they’ve really been pushing it this whole time. But finally, it seems like everyone’s settled down and is keeping perfectly quiet—
“What do you mean, he gets to keep the cat?”
Cole’s hopes and dreams go up in sad, despairing smoke.
“Wait, that’s what’s bothering you?” Nya blinks. “Not the whole, ‘this Lloyd gets his entire family back happy’ part, but the cat part?”
“Well yeah, I’m upset about the cat part!” Lloyd exclaims indignantly. “He gets a giant cat! The size of a skyscraper! What kind of raw deal did my grandfather cut me here, I didn’t even get to keep my dragon! This is so dumb, and — and oh look, now my dad’s all happy and stuff—”
Nya and Zane glance around in alarm. The movie-goers around them seem to be losing the last, lingering shreds of their patience, and Cole wisely decides that this might be a nice time to make an exit. The movie looks like it’s about over, anyways, and—
“—and what, they just have happy family dinners together now?!”
Yeah, they’re leaving.
******************
“Well, that was…enlightening,” Zane says blankly, as they exit the theater. He still looks tragically annoyed at the way the producers decided to portray him, but he’s mostly recovered by now. Probably because he torched his little movie poster on the way out, but who are they to judge.
“I think you mean infuriating,” Kai mutters, glaring at the theater as they leave it behind.
“I don’t know, it wasn’t so bad,” Nya says. “Like, they obviously decided to go for Lloyd’s very sensitive personal life as a focus point, so at least the rest of us got off alright.”
“Giant cat,” Lloyd mourns, clearly still more hung-up on that than Ninjago’s apparent obsession with his family drama.
“I just wanna try that lightning thing later,” Jay says. “Know any doors I can practice busting open dramatically?”
“Yeah, the door to the producer’s office,” Kai grumbles.
“Enough, guys,” Cole sighs. “It was a lot better than it could’ve been. Let’s just be happy the city still likes us enough to make us the heroes.”
They all nod at that, placated for now, at least. They fall into silence, carefully navigating their way home, until Jay breaks the quiet.
“Your heroes on the wa-a-ay,” Jay murmurs. He’s met with five looks of equal disappointment. “What?” he shrugs. “It’s catchy.”
Cole rolls his eyes, and Kai scoffs. They fall back into silence for a beat, their footsteps the only sound on the street, then—
“Something-something save the da-a-ay,” Lloyd hums.
Jay beams, and Kai moans. Nya just grins. “Gonna something-something pla-a-ace—”
“That takes us higher!”
They dissolve into snickers, their mix of off-key singing echoing across the Ninjago City streets. Cole spares a sigh of despair at their attempt, but he can’t help grinning too. It is a catchy song, and, to be fair, for trying to capture their general team spirit, it comes pretty close.
A lot closer than half that movie did, he frowns. Though he does still want that shirt his counterpart wore.
“Hey,” Jay speaks up. “Let’s learn that Garmadon song next. We can sing it to him in battle.”
“Oh, now you’re talking.”

Okay so I may have caught COVID (not sure I’m going to the doctor tomorrow) so to occupy my time I got a prime account and decided to FINALLY watch Promare.
Tumblr media
This movie has been on my Watch List since I first heard of it, which was before 2020 started.  I just never got around to it, till I realized I was going to be stuck in my room to avoid people :(
So I watched it... twice.  I probably will watch it again cause it’s the only movie I bought and I am not buying anything else.  So here’s a little review and my thoughts about the movie.  (Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen it)
So the plot I thought was very interesting.  For those who don’t know, the story starts with introducing “The Burnish”, a group of people who can create and control flames.  These people seemed to come out of nowhere and it started a whole movement for Burnish rights and it caused a lot of problems for society.  It ended, but The Burnish were labled as terrorists and do not have the same rights as humans.  (Harsh)
Our main character is a part of a group called the Burning Rescue.  Which is a group of fire fighters that deal with emergancy flames caused by The Burnish.
Tumblr media
The team includes: Lucia, Varys, Remi, Aina, Ignis the leader, and Galo Thymos.
Tumblr media
Now as I said, this himbo (Galo) is the main protagonist.  He’s a rookie in the Burning Rescue, and has a “Firey Spirit”.  He always goes off on some random speech and enjoys his job being a fire fighter and takes pride in saving people.  He keeps this mindset and energy throughout the whole movie.
He gets sent up a building to save people on the roof and meets a terrorist group called the Mad Burnish.  There aren’t many of them out now, but the top generals and the leader are still at large.
Tumblr media
(This was the first and only image I saw from this movie and I was so confused I had to see it... months later)
After a tense fight with the generals (Both noting that Galo is an idiot) he defeats them and takes on their leader.  The leader isn’t so easy to defeat, not backing down easily and even pinning Galo, but ultimetly he was taken down by the whole Burning Rescue squad.  Their leader is actually a very small young man who goes by the name of Lio Fotia.
Tumblr media
(I specifically wanted this scene so I looked hard for it)
Lio, who was mistaken for a child, is shown to be one of the strongest Burnish alive and takes pride in it.  Wanting nothing but rights for his people and will never stop fighting for that.
He’s actually a good foil to Galo for many reasons and why I like them being the protagonists for the story.  Galo is loud, over the top, and loves to show off his skills.  While Lio is more on the quiet side, and doesn’t really show off, more on the reserved side.
But the two are very alike.  Both feel the need to protect their people (Galo with humans and Lio with Burnish), but they don’t hate the other.  Galo wants Burnish rights while Lio vows to never kill humans.  They also share a god damn brain cell and 90% of the time neither of them have it.
So yeah, Galo gets a medal from his hero, Governer Kray, impressive prison break and all that.  We cut to Galo and Aina having a moment, which Galo realizes the Burnish had escaped prison.  He finds them in a cave and thus we learn more about the Burnish from their very leader, Lio, who remembers Galo, but Galo forgot him.
Tumblr media
(Fire go pew)
Lio explains to Galo that the Burnish are people too, even showing how disgusted he is by Galo thinking otherwise (some very racist viewpoints).  There Galo witnesses the death of a Burnish, turning her to ash.  Lio explains to Galo that the Burnish can hear the flames, they speak to them, wanting to burn more.  He also learns that his hero, Kray, was using the Burnish for human experiments, and calls Galo an idiot and to believe what he wants.  Then the Burnish run away and leave Galo tied up...
Galo’s whole view changes on the Burnish and see that Kray is conducting human experiments on the Burnish, even though they’re people like them.  The reason being that the Earth is gonna become a dead planet and everything is going to shit.  So Kray is going to take 10,000 humans to another planet and use the Burnish as fuel.  (Fucked up).
Galo goes against this and gets arrested.  Meanwhile Lio and the other Burnish are found and taken as fuel, but Lio’s loyal generals get him to safety (much to Lio’s disagreement).
Tumblr media
Lio goes into a full on rage and uses his full power to attack the city and Kray.  Telling him to free the Burnish, or watch the city burn.
Tumblr media
He takes the form of a dragon and damn near destroys the whole city.  He almost succeeds too, getting to Kray.  But of course Galo cuts in and fights Lio in an effort to calm him down.  Aina decides to drop them off by the frozen lake to “cool off” and discover a lab under all the ice.
They meet Professor Deus, the man responsible for all the cooling gear.  He wanted to help the Burnish, but was killed by Kray for disagreeing with him and his viewpoints.  Deus, who is now a living computer, tells Galo, Lio, and Aina about the “Promare”,  A group of aliens from another dimension who connected with a human, Burnish.  However the Promare feel what their human host feels, even extreme pain.  If Kray’s plan succeeds, then the Earth is gonna blow up due to all the pain the Promare feel.
It’s up to Galo and Lio to stop Kray from his evil plans (cause they happened to be there) by piloting the Deus X Machina.  Later on the suit gets a name change, Lio de Galon.
Tumblr media
A suit powered by a firefighter and a Burnish.  Both Galo and Lio work together to stop Kray.  Along with their allies they succeed in stopping the ship, but Kray was not finished.  He reveals himself to also be a Burnish, and kidnaps Lio, saying he was going to be the new core to the ship.  He then attacks Galo and sends him flying in flames.  But Galo was saved last minute by Lio’s flames, and now he plans to save Lio, with the help of his team, and goes into the core to save his new friend.
He makes it, stopping the ship a second time, and sees Lio is dying, turning to ash right before him.  Kray was ready to fight, but could not harm Galo due to Lio’s flame.  Galo punches Kray and says he’s gonna save Lio, stop the magma, and even save him.  Then we get the scene.  The scene.
Tumblr media
The “Kiss of Life” some like to call it, or just CPR.  Either way, it’s a pretty romantic scene.  Galo brings Lio to life and the two have a new plan.  Save the Earth.  Lio says the Promare want to burn out, so with the help of Galo, and all the Burnish, they create Galo de Lion
Tumblr media
This behemoth of a mech saves the Earth and everyone on it.  As well as burning out the Promare, sending them home.  The movie ends with everyone being okay and the end of the Burnish.  Thus the next plan, to clean up the mess they all made.  The End
Longer than I thought, sorry...  So what’s my thoughts?
Well let’s start with the animation.  It was done by Trigger (if it wasn’t obvious just by looking at it), and they go ALL out on it.  Everything is stylized and looks gorgeous.  The colors just pop out at you, nothing in this movie looks dull.  Action scenes are very fast pace and intense, and their calmer moments are beautiful and let you relax with the gorgeous scenery, everything is gorgeous in the movie.
The characers are pretty good, one complaint is that we don’t get to know some of them well, like some of the Burning Rescue.  We only get to know Aina out of the Burning Rescue team.  Plus a few other side characters, like the two Generals, Meis and Gueira, don’t get enough screentime, but I guess they weren’t the focus.
Tumblr media
Galo and Lio, again, were really good main characters, who play off each other well.  They both open each other’s eyes and see things in a different light, especially Lio who showed Galo what the Burnish are really like.  They do tend to argue and seem to disagree, but they are an amazing team.  We see that when they pilot Lio de Galon and together create Galo de Lion.  I do believe they fell for one another in the end, but I cannot say it’s canon since I don’t know for sure.
Voice acting was also great. I watched it dub, don’t kill me, and I actually think the dub was better than the sub, and this is coming from someone who watches subs more and is very biased.  Billy Kametz played Galo well, just giving off so much energy and really selling his performance.  I’ve heard people not liking Johnny Yong Bosch playing Lio, but he was perfect for the role.  Enough sass and emotion for Lio, I don’t think anyone could have done it better.  Everyone else did a great job as well, Alyson Leigh Rosenfeld as Aina, Crispin Freeman as Kray, and Steven Blum as Ignis.  Just... everyone did amazing.
Do I need to say anything about the soundtrack?  It’s beautiful and I love every song in this movie, I am listening to is as I type this review.  From upbeat songs like Inferno, to the saddest like Ashes.  Each song that plays puts the whole scene together, music makes the scene after all.  Gallant Ones is the most memorable example (plays during the scene) and it really sets the mood on how the characters feel about one another.  Ashes is really good in my opinion since it plays during the death of a Burnish.  But they all are good, if you haven’t seen the movie and don’t plan on watching it, go listen to the soundtrack, it’s worth it.
Overall I adore this movie, it’s over the top and super entertaining, keeping my attention the whole time.  It has helped me relax during this pretty scary time for me ^^;  I highly recommend this movie.  It’s got way too many good points that I dare say it’s one of my favorites.  It sold me on the plot and I stayed for the great and entertaining characters.  If you haven’t seen it (which I would be surprised) then go check it out.  If you want to see the sub then it’s on Youtube, but if I sold you on the dub then it’s on Amazon Prime, (you’ll have to pay for both and I’m too lazy to find it for free).
That’s all, thanks for reading my overly long review of this movie.
