How do you think the V3 cast would feel about their pregame selves if they were in the same room with them? (mainly Shuichi because at the least the fans gave him a personality. Like...I don't know if it's canon, but it's something to work with)

I know pretty much nothing about the pregame characters.

Cept Kaede.

Soo... These are all my headcannons.

Kaede: Creeped out, is just like "I wouldn't say that."

I feel like Pre Kaede just teases her for being "soft and pathetic."

Mimics what she says in a high pitched squeaky voice.

Shuichi: Both just stare uncomfortably for a while.

Before Pre Shuichi, noticing Shuichi's hair, straightens up and asks if his pitch to take out Kaede worked.

Shuichi, horrified shoots all that down that he would never.

Pre Shuichi just rolls his eyes like "God your lame, it's just a game man. And now, I'm the star of it."

Shuichi just slowly shakes his head and leaves to find his friends.

Kaito: Pre game Kaito is cocky, loud and even more boisterous than Kaito.

Keeps asking what their earnings are but Kaito doesn't know what he's saying.

It's a bit off putting but they appear to get along.

Kokichi: Pre game Kokichi is a nerd about the show.

Kokichi is slowly getting answers out of his more serious counterpart.

Both keep talking about how cool Monokuma is...

And everyone's thinking of ways to seperate em.

Kirumi: Pre game Kirumi just kinda looks at Kirumi like dirt. Just ugh they made me the maid?

Kirumi smiled politely... And murderously.

Gonta: Both cinnamon rolls, both gentleman.

Pre is more articulate but they are both bonding.

It's adorable.

Miu: The opposite of Kaede, Pre Miu is a sweetheart so she's getting teased by Miu for being "a soft prude with no tits."

Keebo likes her well enough, to Miu's annoyance.

Angie: Pre just looks at Angie in annoyance like "... I made one mention of my god and they made it my whole personality...."

Korekiyo: Pre instantly quizzes him on various topics in anthropology.

Just to make sure he's as smart as him.

They have fun with it...than Korekiyo mentions sister and Pre looks at him all werid.

"I don't have a sister..."

Awkward.

Tenko: Pre takes one look at her and just walks away.

Mumbling about needing to have some words with the development team... Because what is that?

Himiko: Himiko just takes a nap and Pre just nods, mood and takes a nap as well.

Rantaro: Both get on pretty well.

Rantaro makes the mistake of asking why Pre would do this...more than once.

"For my family man, they're all watching me follow my dreams."

And Rantaro is both aw but also... Tf kind of dreams u having boy?

Keebo: Keebo was excited to meet his Pre self but... He's very rudemantary.

Can't really say much other than a few phrases so... Its just a bit awkward.

Maki: Pre Maki finds Kaito annoying and hates the whole romance plot shoved in.

Just rants about it but she's happy they let her be a kick ass assassin "and not some dumb child carer."

Maki is just silently listening, couldn't get a word in even if she tried.

Is pissed about the not liking Kaito thing.

Ryoma: Just silently vibe with each other.

Tsumugi: Both squeal when they see each other.

Clasping hands and whispering details, just all excited and secretive.

"Wait don't tell me, you're gonna write unheard lines.

"You know it!"

Pre is very happy with Tsumugi, and the more extroverted of the duo.

Both are just fangirling each other.

Idk if people know how I feel about these characters, so here ya go! This is my opinion, please don’t attack me for this (also I only did this for the mainline games and Komaru + the Warriors of Hope)

...Also I wanted to go into detail on some of these so yeah Warning: it does get pretty rambly

S tier

...I don’t really feel like I need to explain any of these. MOVING ON

A tier

Chiaki Nanami Please don’t kill me for not putting her in S. I can explain, I promise Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore her and love her relationship with Hajime, but I didn’t really get as attached to her as I did with other characters. I still love her though

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu He has one of the best character arcs in the series, only JUST being outranked by Shuichi. Seriously, best SDR2 survivor, hands DOWN.

Ultimate Imposter Yep. Fake Togami outranks actual Togami by miles. YEAH I SAID IT! Idk, I found them a lot more interesting and likeable than Togami and it was a real shame they got killed off so early. They were pretty fun.

Ryoma Hoshi ...Do I even need to explain why he ranked so high? Like, come ON! He’s one of the most underrated characters in the franchise!

Hajime Hinata 3rd best protag for me (yes I’m counting Kaede shut up), but I still love his arc. 

Kiyotaka Ishimaru He was my fave from the first game for a while, but the Kiyondo stuff kinda brought him down for me. And ngl, at times it feels like people only judge him based on his friendship with Mondo. I still love him though.

Mondo Owada Chapter 2. Need I say more. He’s a pretty cool character outside of that, too.

Komaru Naegi Just copy-paste my reason for Ryoma, it’s practically the same.

Nagisa Shingetsu Best Warrior of Hope. Hands down. I will die on this hill.

Kotoko Utsugi Despite being beaten out by Nagisa, I still adore her. She deserves the best.

B tier

Maki Harukawa Okay don’t get me wrong, I like her as a character, but the main problem I had was that her crush on Kaito kinda came out of left field for me. Like, she was a stoic unfeeling assassin and she suddenly fell head over heels for some astronaut that knocked on her door a few times. It feels pretty rushed (though knowing Tsumugi it probably was) and kinda brings her down a few pegs for me.

Korekiyo Shinguji “Why is he ranked so high!? He’s the freaky incest guy-” SHUT UP. Yes, his character was absolutely obliterated by the incest twist, but outside of that he is actually a pretty compelling character. (also if you look into his writing it’s pretty heavily implied that his sister used and abused him so judging him based on the incest thing alone is kinda odd ngl)

Ibuki Mioda She’s pretty fun. I’m not as head-over-heels for her as other people, but she’s pretty fun.

Celestia Ludenberg See, Ouma stans? THIS is how you do a compelling liar character!

Peko Pekoyama Please don’t kill me. It’s just that outside of Fuyuhiko she kinda felt......Eh? Like don’t get me wrong, I like her, but something always felt missing for me.

Nagito Komaeda My favourite antag didn’t even make A tier whoops- Yeah, Nagito is the best rival for me, but I’m not as head-over-heels for him as the rest of the fandom is.

Leon Kuwata PLAY HIS FREE TIME EVENTS.

Kiibo The “that’s robophobic!” joke kinda got old after the billionth time, but other than that he’s fun.

Aoi Asahina Her development is cool, but I don’t really have much to say on her honestly.

Sonia Nevermind Same reason as Aoi, but her relationship with Gundham is pretty cute.

Jataro Kemuri This kid deserves better and needs protection. ...I don’t have much other than that, though.

Monaca Towa This is gonna be controversial, but Monaca is the best villain of the franchise for me. Sure, she’s far from being one of my favourite characters, but she’s menacing and enough of a threat to be a great antagonist.

C tier

Kyoko Kirigiri Please don’t kill me. Like...She’s okay, but for a while I found her kinda......Dull? Idk what to say here.

Makoto Naegi He’s alright, but he’s the weakest protagonist for me.

Tsumugi Shirogane I think people are gonna agree with me the most on this. She’s a decent villain, but the "plainy plainy plain” stuff got REALLY old. (which is partially why I rewrote her entirely in DFTH oops) She’s better than Junko by a long shot, so at least she has that.

Kirumi Tojo She was okay until the nonsensical prime minister twist. Seriously, I detest that twist.

Angie Yonaga ...I don’t really have much to say on her. Like the Atua stuff got pretty old and I found her kinda annoying, but she has enough to put her above the characters I don’t like.

Mahiru Koizumi She kinda felt like a better Tenko, but...Uh...

Teruteru Hanamura Yeah, I don’t outright dislike Teruteru. Shocking, I know. His backstory and the stuff with his mom is charming enough, but the perverted stuff still kinda icks me out. It’s not as bad as Miu’s, though.

Genocider Syo She’s more interesting than Toko, but still not really that much there other than “serial killer that somehow got accepted into this academy but don’t think about that look how quirky she is!!”

Tenko Chabashira Similar to Angie. But the way she drooled over and chased after Himiko was kinda eeeh for me. Not as bad as Souda though, thank god

D tier

Byakuya Togami God, he’s such an asshole. Sure his development and the stuff he does is interesting, but GOD HE’S SUCH AN ASSHOLE.

Akane Owari She’s the most “why the hell are you still here” out of the survivors for me. Like, I don’t outright hate her, but a lot of the time it kinda feels to me like she’s only there for fanservice. (seriously, in one of her sprites she’s literally flashing you. Do I need to say anything else?)

Himiko Yumeno Yeah, she’s also pretty weak for me. Her development post chapter 3 was okay I guess, but it kinda felt too little too late.

Toko Fukawa Ugh. Sure, I don’t really like Togami, but the way she drools over him is gross. Sure she’s somewhat redeemed by her development in UDG, but other than that she doesn’t really offer much.

Yasuhiro Hagakure Didn’t really felt like he offered much other than “blatant comic relief who’s probably a stoner”.

Masaru Daimon The weakest out of the Warriors of Hope by a long shot. Sure, his backstory’s pretty sad, but his personality kinda grated on me, ngl.

Kokichi Ouma PLEASE DON’T KILL ME. Like, everyone hails him as the best written character of the series, but if you look closer into his writing it’s actually pretty bad. Not to mention the stans constantly excusing his actions because “uwu liar boy who’s gay for Shuichi” REALLY brings him down.

E tier

Kazuichi Souda He’s literally all the things people hate about Teruteru, but the fandom barely calls him out for it! Hooray!

Miu Iruma She’s basically just there for NSFW jokes. Need I say more. Also, why is no-one else talking about how problematic the maintenance scene was?

Nekomaru Nidai He’s basically just there for shit jokes. And that really got old for me.

Sayaka Maizono OKAY PLEASE PUT YOUR PITCHFORKS DOWN AND HEAR ME OUT! Look, I’m not gonna deny she was kinda cute, but what she pulled in chapter 1 was honestly really fucking snakey. “But she didn’t know about the class trial stuff!” So what? She was willing to use practically the only person in the academy she was close to as a fall guy so she could get away with murder and didn’t even bat an eye! Even if the trial stuff didn’t happen and she DID get away with killing Leon, did she really think everyone would be okay with it? Hell, did she even CONSIDER how Makoto felt!? Sayaka is a fucking snake! She literally USED Makoto!!! WHY IS NO-ONE CALLING HER OUT!?!?

F tier

Junko Enoshima ...Do I even need to explain this.

Mikan Tsumiki I really didn’t like her, even BEFORE chapter 3. Yeah, I said it. She kinda got on my nerves and the fact that they were playing her up for fanservice despite her backstory was really gross, and chapter 3 just made everything so much worse. Like, her getting her memories back and killing someone could’ve worked, JUST MAKE HER PLAN MAKE SENSE!

Hiyoko Saionji She’s just a fucking bully. Do I really need to elaborate?

Hifumi Yamada ...Again. Do I REALLY NEED TO EXPLAIN THIS!?

Keigo Atobe x Reader

Title: Missing Undergarments Fluff No Warning

You were the captain and coach of the U-17 tennis camp, you were in charge of the newcomers. You would have been able to do that for the upperclassman and be in charge of them but you knew they were lacking the spirit that you searched in a tennis team. So they gave the position to some idiot, you couldn’t stand. They weren’t normally your problem because the tennis team you were charge was your main priority. You were confident in their skills, mainly because you went to every tennis team, and hand-picked them yourself. 

Right now the upperclassman was giving them a hard time, and you could feel a tick mark appear on your head. It was only the second week and they were already causing trouble for your team. The team didn’t know you were their coach, so when you served the ball and hit Byodoin to back him up away from your team their eyes widen. You also weren’t to keen on him hurting your best friend Tokugawa. You knew they weren’t expecting a girl to be in this camp, so if it was under different circumstances you would have looked at their faces. 

“Oi! What do you think you are doing?” You asked walking down the bleachers, everyone parted ways, Tokugawa’s eyes widen. You were the captain for several years for U-17 camp, before you became a captain and a coach, but you normally didn’t make your appearance until the third or fourth week. 

“(L/N)~san it’s a bit early to be revealing your face to the newcomers don’t you think?” He asked with that irritating smirk. You rolled your eyes walking past him, and checking Tokugawa over, he looked away knowing you were going to scold him later on for this. 

“You need to go to the nurse and explain what happens. I will deal with you later.” You tell him, even though you two were best friends, you always scolded him when he did reckless things.

“Oi did you hear me? I am talking to you?” 

“Put some respect on my name, I showed my face because you and your airheaded team don’t know how to stop messing with my team. So I decided to come here myself to put a stop to it myself.” You said you voice getting darker with each sentence. Byodoin rolled his eyes before smirking holding his racket so it was pointing it at you. 

“No need to be a sour patch, you know this is a tradition for us.”

“It’s also my tradition to beat your ass, every time you do. So what do you say we picked up where you left off at with Tokugawa? Actually no, that would be too easy, I will let you keep your points and I will take his points down and start at zero myself.” You said you could hear the multiple schools of the newcomers whispering about you. 

“Always cocky.”

“No, if we both start at zero we both know I would crush you.” You say. 

“Very well then, ladies serve first.” He smirked, you tossed him the ball which made him narrow his eyes at you.

“If that’s the case then you should be serving first not me.” You said with a cheeky grin that made him growl at you. 

“Wait, miss, you shouldn’t. You will get hurt.” You turned your head, to see a cute redheaded boy that was in the golden pair. 

“Kikumaru Eiji, golden pair with Oishi. It’s fine, trust me I will be fine.” You say the boy’s eyes widen in shock before looking at the others. Just like that the match resumed, Byodoin needing one point to win while you had zero. He served the ball, and just like that, you knew he was aiming for your body. You sidestepped the ball before returning it at a fast, lightning speed. 

Point by point you caught up with Byodoin, and you could see the irritation in his eyes. He was getting angry with himself, and losing his cool in the process. You both were tied now, and he hit the ball just the way you needed. You stood in a position that everyone besides the newcomers knew, and they knew what shot was coming. Dragon Force. 

“You aren’t the only powerhouse, you should know this. Dragon Force…” Byodoin’s eyes widen, and he stepped back as you hit the ball that formed a dragon’s body flying through the air, you knew he would try to return it, but you simply turned your back to him.

“Don’t you dare turn~ your~back to me!” Byodoin yelled but the force of the ball sent him flying into the wall denting it.  “You aren’t a match, never been a match never will be a match for me. You mess with my team again, I will personally make sure you guys are suspended from any games that happen in the near future Do I make myself clear? I chose to take on with training them because I can’t stand half of you red jersey bastards.” You say narrowing your eyes harder. 

“You guys don’t deserve to wear the red jackets, so I plan to remove you guys completely to let them take your places when I am done with them.” You say putting your red jacket on your shoulders, that’s when the younger members realized you were the captain of the entire U-17 camp and must have been their coach. You walked away from them, before heading to the infirmary but were stopped by a member of Rikkaidai’s youngest member, Akaya.

“That was so cool!” 

“Ah, thanks Akaya Kirihara youngest of Rikkaidai’s tennis team.” You patted his head, and continued to walk away, you didn’t notice but a certain captain of Hyoeti’s tennis team was watching you in awe. 

“She is beautiful.”

“Uh, Atobe~kun she is like 2  years older than you.” 

“Don’t care. Oresama will have her one way or another.” Atobe sighed in content before you stopped and looked over at them. 

“ Let’s go  check on Tokugawa alright?” You said, and everyone began to follow you. Atobe made his way up to you, and before he could say anything you raised a hand. 

“Keigo Atobe, Hyotei’s captain.” You said, he felt his heart rate accelerate.

“You can call me or~”

“Call you Oresama? Yeah, not a chance.” You say raising an eyebrow, you heard snickering, and Keigo glared back at the team and they got quiet. 

“It’s good to see you again (Y/N).” Shuji came up to hug you tightly, you hugged back with a smile. 

“Good to be back, I guess.” You laughed nudging Shuji. 

“You know they were highly concern about you facing Byodoin right?”

“I know, but can you blame them? They don’t know me, they just see a small female that looks like she can break easily like glass facing a brute like him.” You say.

“Yeah, even after I reassured them that Byodoin was the glass in this situation they didn’t believe me.” He said, and you laughed. 

“Oi are you two...dating?” You turned your eyes to meet Keigo’s and he looked left out, Shuji looked at you and you both shared the same idea. Shuju was another one of your best friends that you adored and had to scold often for not training.

“She is soon to be my wife,” Shuji said, and you hugged his arms nodding. 

“Oh, I see.”  Atobe dropped his shoulders, the look of defeat on his face. 

“Don’t be down, there are plenty of pretty girls.” You say in a teasing tone.

“Don’t tease them Shuji, (Y/N) you are their coach/captain you shouldn’t be joining in.” You looked up, and you rolled your eyes. 

“ But we are dating.”

“Well, this is news to me,” Tokugawa said crossing his arms. You and Shuji looked at each other sharing the same though once again a smile on your face. 

“Want us to prove it?” Shuji asked Tokugawa looked you both before realizing what you two were planning.

“Oh gross, don’t you dare.” It was too late Shuji pecked your lips, your eyes widen and you slapped his shoulder. 

“Oi! We weren’t actually going to do that.” You exclaimed to Shuji who had a carefree smile on his lips.

“Too late now.”

“I am going to kill you.”

“Gotta catch me first.” 

“Ugh, I hate you.” You say as Shuji ran from you.

“Anything with dating doesn’t listen to them, they aren’t dating.” Keigo’s spirits lifted up, and you could see hope in his eyes. 

“Don’t go getting idea’s Keigo, I date people same age or older than me.” You say, before smacking Tokugawa upside his head. 

“Owe, that hurts!”

“Sorry, are you hurt badly?” 

“Not really, I just can’t overdo it.

“Good, 50 laps.”

“WHAT!?”

“You know the rules no joining in matches against the red jackets unless I or the other coaches arrange it.” You say.

“That is so cruel.”

“I can make it 200 laps. I am being nice because you got hurt during your match.”

“I am going, I am going,” Tokugawa said as he began running his laps. You smiled before yelling towards him. 

“Meet us in the cafeteria when you are done bye~!” You said, leading them to the cafeteria. 

“What are we doing here?” Oishi asked you looked over at him giving him a smile.

“Well when I reveal myself a month later, I always throw a small party for my team, since I revealed myself earlier we are just gonna have the party earlier. So if you want to shower and stuff just meet back here.” You say with a smile, they all nodded cheering that they get to relax a bit. You watched them all leave before Ryoma came up to you, you raised an eyebrow before saying the words you knew you were going to hear from one of them.

“I will beat you, and become the best.” You laughed softly hitting his hat down a bit.

“Go get in the shower you stink like sweat.” You say making Ryoma puff his cheeks out. You left to your room to shower yourself when you finished you went to put on underwear in a bra only to realize they were all gone. Every. Single. Last. Pair. You growled and went to look for pants or shorts only to realized your dresses were left behind.

“OH NO!” You exclaimed eyes widened in saucers, you put the skirt on and your red jacket so no one could tell.

“I can’t go outside to buy underwear,  pants or bra, oh my god. I need... Tokugawa! Come here! You yelled getting to the cafeteria. You held your skirt down, with a blush as Tokugawa made his way to you.”

“What’s up?”

“I need a huge favor.”

“Are you okay? You are red in the face.” He asked worried, your blush increased and you leaned in to whisper in his ear. 

“Someone stole my panties, bras, and pants leaving me with skirts and shirts. If I give you money can you please buy me undergarments?” His eyes widen, a blush covered his cheeks. 

“I-I can’t (Y/N).”

“Please, I will do your homework for the rest of the year.”

“I am sorry. I can’t help I can’t just walk into a girls shop and buy those things.” He said apologetically. 

“Fine, thanks though.” Shuji was the next person you called. 

“SHUJI!” Tokugawa walked away giving you an apologetic smile.

“What’s up?” He asked you blushed before getting it over with.

“Someone stole my pants and ALL of my undergarments. I can’t go by them myself because well I am wearing a skirt with… nothing please go buy me some I will do your homework for the rest of the year. Shuji felt a nosebleed coming on, and your blush darkened, you whined and Shuji shook his head. 

“I flirt with you, yes, but that’s because we enjoy making people think that, but I can’t possibly buy your undergarments. That means I would know exactly what you would be wearing, I can’t I am sorry.”

“Shuji if I don’t get these things, I will never be able to play tennis, I will have to forfeit matches and stuff please.”

“I am sorry but ask one of the younger males. SORRY (Y/N)!” He ran off to tend to his bleeding nose. 

“Is everything okay (Y/N)~senpai?” You turned to see Oishi, and your eyes widen. He is so sweet and pure. 

“Oishi, do you know anyone that has sisters? That isn’t shy? Or something…” Oishi thought for a moment.”

“Eiji, Fuji, Ryoma has an older female cousin. Uhm, that’s all I can think of.” 

“Eiji! Fuji! Thanks, Oishi.”

“Anything I can help with?” He asked.

 “Are you comfortable with shopping for bras and underwear?” You asked, and he blushed shaking his head.

“Then nope, thanks.” Eiji and Fuji made their way, Eiji had a blush.

“I know why you called I am sorry (Y/N) I can’t help. Tokugawa was asking around for you.” Eiji said.

“I didn’t hear what’s going on?” Fuji asked confused.

“Someone stole my pants and undergarments I need someone to buy me some I have money I can’t go out like this.” You said desperate, and Fuji’s eyes opened. 

“Do you know who did it?”

“Nope, I was in the shower, or It could have been when I was at the courts.” You said Fuji puts a hand on his chin.

“I can’t help but if you can’t find anyone, I can get my sister too,” Eiji said, and Fuji nodded.

“Same I can too.”

“Thanks, I don’t want to be a bother to them though.” You say.

“Oh tell Tokugawa to stop asking people I don’t want everyone to know…” They nodded, and you sighed slipping away from the cafeteria, but Keigo stopped you.

“Senpai, do you need to ask me a question?” You turned to see Keigo. You were not about to ask him, but it was like he knew the issue. 

“Did Tokugawa tell you?”

“Just ask me the question.” He said, you blushed groaning but you had no choice. 

“Keigo can you please head to the store. I can’t walk out like this someone~”

“Stole your undergarments and pants? Yeah, I figured that’s what they were doing. Here.” He handed you bags, and you looked into the bag seeing all new undergarments. Your eyes widen and he gave you his famous smirk.

“Oresama is amazing, right? I even reported the ones who stole your stuff.” Keigo said, you were about to hug him but stopped. 

“Once I am fully dressed, I am giving you a hug you are amazing.” You say speed walking to your room. Keigo grinned fist pumping in the air, and everyone walked to him.

“How did you know?” Tokugawa asked.

“When I was headed to my room, I heard Byodoin and some other’s say they were stealing (Y/N) stuff, so I recorded them and took it to the coaches.” Everyone nodded and began to party, and you walked out of your room to see Keigo waiting for you. 

“You were waiting for me?”

“Yepp.” You hugged him tightly, and he returned the hug. You gave him a soft kiss to the cheek before heading down to the cafeteria.

“Thanks, Keigo, I owe you one.”

“Just a date will be fine, maybe a dance tonight.” You glanced at Keigo, and he offered you his hand once you both made it The music was loud and you leaned your head back, before looking at him.

“You are serious.” 

“Oresama is very serious.” You looked over to see Tokugawa and Shuji who were grinning at you, you had a blush before taking his hand. You both continued to dance, and Keigo held you close. Even though you were older, you were shorter than him, it wasn’t long before Nioh pulled you away from Keigo and began to dance with you. 

“Puri~not sorry I stole her from you.” 

“Oi~!” Keigo growled at Nioh, you sweatdropped. Nioh danced away from Keigo in the crowd, somewhere along the way, Fuji was dancing with you, than Oishi, than Bunta, then Akaya, back to Keigo, then Shuji. You were confused, amongst the slight arguing you somehow started dancing with Ryoma. 

“How did I even get into this?” Ryoma was confused just as you were, someone pushed someone, and you let Ryoma go and fell into Tezuka. 

“Oh dear, this is getting out of hand.” You said, and Tezuka adjusted his glasses.

“It is now they are arguing who is better at tennis.” You laughed softly, you had your work cut out for you. Just then Keigo appeared at Tezuka’s side. 

“Can I have her back?” Keigo said, and Tezuka allowed you to dance with Keigo. 

“Idiots.” He mumbled, and you laughed softly before pecking Keigo’s lips.

“Maybe I can make an exception for you. After all, you were man enough to buy things no one else was comfortable doing.” You say.

Entry 7: The Hardest Choice

Chapter 6: The Path Is Yours

We rush into the battlefield from the future vision prologue and find Xander and Ryoma dueling. Xander, after making sure Corrin is okay, announces that Nohr is invading Hoshido to show off their strength. He points out that ending things quickly will prevent unnecessary bloodshed, which is a fair point. But, you know what else would prevent unnecessary bloodshed? Not invading Hoshido.

The two families argue over ownership of Corrin and she is forced to choose a side. Stand with her genetic family and fight to defend Hoshido from violent invaders, or stand with her adoptive family and invade a neighboring country, slaughtering countless civilians in the process. Or play the DLC route. Or go play Super Smash Bros.

And I mean, is this even a choice? Nohr is evil. Like, insanely evil. Ten minutes ago they blew up a marketplace and killed dozens of children. They’re invading Hoshido for shits and giggles and we’re supposed to side with them? Corrin’s supposed to be a good person, why the fuck would she ever join Nohr’s army?

And it’s not like Corrin has any love for Nohr as a country. She spent fifteen years in prison, she doesn’t know the people. Hell, she hates how Nohr looks and feels. Garon murdered her parents, kidnapped her, held her captive, and tried to murder her. Twice.

There is only one reason to join Nohr: love for Xander, Camila, Leo, and Elise. And that’s a relatable reason, standing by your family even if they’re evil. But, it feels cowardly to kill innocent people just because you don’t want to fight your family.

No, not cowardly. Evil. This is a choice between good and evil, with both sides holding up signs saying which they are. And that’s part of the problem with this game. Nohr is so ridiculously evil and Hoshido is so ridiculously good. At this point, we have seen no justification for any evil Nohr does. They’re evil for the point of evil. And even when Hoshido does shady things, like kidnapping Azura or having a mind control barrier, the game glosses over it to avoid having the good guys be morally grey. And let’s be honest, it’s kinda infuriating that Intelligent Systems, a Japanese company, made a game where the most explicitly Japanese kingdom in the franchise is pure good and the European kingdom is cartoonishly evil.

This game tries to paint this as a choice between two families, and that doesn’t work. Painting it as a choice between two families lessens the impact of siding with Nohr to protect your family. Plus, again, the Hoshidans are strangers. Hoshido is not Corrin’s home and the Hoshidan royals are not her family. The only one who was given enough screen time to feel like family was Mikoto, and she’s dead. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but I really don’t give a shit about Corrin’s blood. I’m not choosing Birthright because I want Corrin to claim her Birthright, I’m choosing it because Nohr is cartoonishly evil.

And here’s the kicker, the ultimate reason to choose Hoshido: Garon tried to murder Corrin. Twice. First with Hans at the bridge, then again with the bomb at the plaza. Choosing Nohr is suicidally stupid. I know Corrin’s naive, but this is just idiotic.

And Corrin doesn’t even bring this up. She doesn’t shout to Xander, “Hans attempted to murder me as we were fleeing the Bottomless Canyon, apparently working under orders from King Garon. I do not feel safe returning to Nohr.”

No, she doesn’t explain jack shit. She lets Xander think she’s betraying him, when in reality she’s just doing the right thing. Corrin is an imbecile and it makes this game painfully dumb.

Birthright Chapter 6: In The White Light

We chose Hoshido. Right away, the chapter title screen changes, going from the mix of white lilies and black roses from earlier chapters to just white lilies. The text boxes also get a new blueish tint. Corrin tells Xander to withdraw his troops and that she’s siding with Hoshido.

Xander says that Corrin must be brainwashed. He reveals that he’s known all along that Garon kidnapped Corrin as a child. Something that he kept from Corrin, because he’s a great older brother. He tells Corrin that they are family, regardless of blood, and that Garon will forgive her. The first one of those is true, but the other is laughable. Has he ever met Garon?

Corrin tells Xander about Garon blowing up the plaza, killing dozens of innocent people, and endangering her life. Corrin calls Garon evil and Xander, apparently ignoring the whole mass murder thing, gets pissed. Corrin asks him to join her and Xander attacks her. Prick.

Side note, the music in this scene is fantastic. It reminds me of the Midmire theme from Awakening and really feels hopeless. Xander beats the shit out of Corrin and Ryoma runs in to save her. The two princes duel, and the battle begins. Also, Jakob shows up.

Ryoma, Hinoka, and Tamuki join Corrin as the two families battle. Interestingly, those three are listed as being part of a different army on the bottom screen, implying that they won’t be around after this battle.

Ryoma

The crown prince of Hoshido. A swordmaster with impeccable strength, skill, and speed. His personal skill, Bushido, makes him fight better when supported by low level units, fitting his honorable Samurai aesthetic. His armor looks cool, but he has crazy, Raditz length hair and this weird horned crown that I dislike. He carries this cool lightning katana called Ranjito. Personality wise, he seems a bit dull. He’s a loyal, protective prince, but at first glance there isn’t much more there.

Hinoka

Corrin’s older sister and a Sky Knight. Her personal skill buffs damage of nearby allies. I kinda like her tomboy haircut and lack of a ridiculously big bust, she looks more like a normal person than most Fates characters. She seems really protective of Corrin and her homeland. Also, I kinda hate her voice.

Takumi

Corrin’s brother, an archer. Who is a prick. A massive prick. He has a massive attack stat for an archer and wields a custom bow that shoots arrows made of light. His design isn’t too interesting, aside from the ponytail that looks weird because it’s cut off by the edge of the screen in his portrait. Personality wise, Takumi is a prick. He’s the best written character in the game, from what I remember. But he’s still a prick.

Also, I suppose I should discuss the Nohrian royals now, because by the time I play Fates my perception will be clouded by the events of Birthright.

Xander

The honorable prince of Nohr. Our protector turned enemy. A Paladin reminiscent of Camus, Selena, and Mustafa from past games, willing to stand by his country even if it is evil. Stat wise, Xander is an absolute tank. His personal skill is called Chivalry, a parallel to Ryoma’s Bushido. It boosts him when fighting enemies with full health. I love Xander’s design, the black and purple with an ascot that makes him look both intimidating and regal, the small black cwon, and that face. He looks like a man tormented by his own actions. I love Xander’s personality, this honorable man who, when forced to choose between his family and his morals, chose the former. He’s actually a good parallel to Corrin, now that I think about it. That said, he is a bit dumb, and trying to kill Corrin was a dick move.

Camila

Ugh. Camila. She’s a new class called Malig Knight, basically a Wyvern Rider with magic abilities. Her personal skill boosts the damage done by allies. Her design...sigh...her design is very, very, very fanservicey, with massive titties and exposed cleavage. Camila is a fanservice character, which is a trend in Fire Emblem that I’m not fond of. Personality wise she’s...creepily obsessed with Corrin, to the point of being kinda incestuous. Ugh. Camila was this game’s breakout character and that’s really disappointing, because she’s probably the worst of the royals in my opinion.

Leo

Leo’s a Dark Knight with a personal skill called Pragmatic that boosts damage against already injured foes. I like how his armor looks; the collar is a bit much, but it’s kinda charming. Also, he looks like he’s Xander’s brother, which is something that they forgot to do with the rest of the royals. Personality wise, he seems to be the only character in this family that isn’t a gigantic moron, which is refreshing. The trick with faking Kaze and Rinkah’s deaths was nefarious, but kind, which is a trait I like in a character.

Elise

The other moe healer little sister, now on horseback. Her personal skill reduces damage done to nearby allies. Design wise, she looks adorable. So adorable that she should not be a soldier and should not have children. I do like the pigtails, although it is weird that they’re both purple and blonde. She’s a bit more forceful in her personality than Sakura, which is good. She’s cute but not boring.

The battle, if you can even call it that, was basically just a quick fight between Ryoma and Xander. After the Nohrians retreat without saying anything, Corrin swears to stand with Hoshido, even though it's the hardest choice she’s ever made. Even though, as we’ve discussed, it isn’t a hard choice at all.

Also, the intro plays again. Nothing is different this time, but it does play again. After that pointless interruption, Lilith shows up again. Remember Lilith? She was important a few chapters ago. And then wasn’t mentioned again until this moment. Lilith takes us into the Astral Plane, introducing us to a new mechanic: My Castle. Which we will get into, next time.

An anon sent me a series of asks to my main blog, but since they mentioned my commentary a few times in it, I feel like it'd be more appropriate to consider them commentary asks and answer them here. Hopefully anon still follows this blog too and will see this!

Dude I watched a complete playthrough of the drv3 a while ago and I just realised what was fucking me up about Kaito's: in his "ultimate fantasy" or whatever, he doesn't think his crush will return his feelings. Right now I think that's to do with his issues with close relationships that you brought up in your commentary, but do you have any other ideas?

thinkin about my earlier ask about kaito's love suite event ... does the dream continue for him when he leaves the room? cause if it does, it likely ends with his ideal turning out to reciprocate his feelings which is kind of sad because of the friendship issues you mentioned in your commentary, but if it doesn't continue afterwards it means he so thoroughly believes that his friends (/fantasy rival) dont care about him beyond his ability to be inspiring that he cant imagine it even in his ideal

WAIT is momota's ideal, a rival, someone who doesn't have the same expectations of him to be strong that a sidekick would have?? like yeah there are some expectations of always being ready to compete and all that but it's more an expectations out of spite deal than expectations to be invincible ideal. for them to even be properly competing a rivalry has to be somewhat close to equal: momota mentions he and his rival being at a complete tie, so his rival doesn't expect him to be invincible.

So, uh, this has been a bit of a ride for me.

Fun fact: Kaito's Love Suite event was, until today, the one bit of canon Kaito content I had not seen and had no intention of ever seeing. As you can very much gather from all my grumbling about amatonormativity in the commentary, particularly in the first post for Salmon Team, I do not like it when romance gets unnecessarily shoved into my adorable friendships and my characters who usually prioritise friendship over romance. If Salmon Team had not also been heteronormative on top of its amatonormativity and had therefore shoved romance into every character's scenes, including the guys', I wouldn't have covered Kaito's Salmon Team content at all. It’d be the same as how I didn’t cover Kaede’s FTEs because they’re pretty romantic; I'm just not remotely into that, and when such content does exist, I'd rather skim over it and think about anything else. So any of Kaito’s content that really actually was a victim of this mode’s amatonormativity (and let’s be real, while the Love Suite scenes are available in the main story, they really shouldn’t have been and should just be considered Salmon Team content) was not something I ever even really wanted to see in the first place.

The entire concept of how the Love Suite scenes work also makes me deeply uncomfortable even aside from the part where it's glaringly just a cheap excuse to throw in some unneeded romance. The subject has a dream where they act out their ideal fantasy at Shuichi, except Shuichi is awake and conscious and will remember it, and the subject doesn't know this? And Shuichi apparently has to play along and do what they want him to do, regardless of how uncomfortable it makes him, or they'll "have a bad dream" or something, as if their comfort matters more than Shuichi's does? That is massively violating the concept of consent for both people involved here. Ugh. Ughghghgh. And from the handful of scenes I have actually seen (which is admittedly not the worst ones), the writing does not remotely acknowledge how gross and fucked-up this is and just plays it like it's totally okay. Ugh. No.

Of course, there was a small chance that Kaito's scene was an exception to this nonsense and actually had something interesting going on in it that I'd like to see (Rantaro’s and Ryoma’s are actually pretty interesting, from what I remember!). So I had my friend antialiasis, whose judgement I trust on these kind of things, read Kaito’s scene before me and give me a summary. The topic of it seemed kinda fun albeit not especially deeply interesting, but then she described it as "not textually romantic but pretty clearly trying to be shipbait". So I pulled a big Nope on that and decided it wasn’t worth it and I'd be happier never seeing the scene after all.

It was therefore very deliberate of me that I completely ignored the fact that this scene even existed for my Salmon Team posts. I was kind of quietly hoping nobody would notice or care - and I told myself that if someone did care and asked me what I thought about it, they'd have to make a very convincing argument for it being relevant to Kaito's issues for me to decide it’d be worth me cringing my way through the romantic undertones to see the issuey part.

And, well, congratulations, anon, I guess you basically just made the impossible possible, because I went and read it just now.

Aaaaaand it was even more eye-rollingly shipbaity than I was expecting it to be and really not worth it for me at all.

Not that this is your fault, anon! I am not mad at you and there's no need to apologise. I'm really happy that you cared so much about my input on this, not to mention very impressed that you did manage to convince me the scene might be relevant enough to Kaito's issues to catch my interest. I'm also thrilled that you're using ideas you learned from me about Kaito's issues to have been thinking about this yourself even with parts I never talked about! That's exactly the kind of thing I hoped my commentary might do for people!

I'm just mad at the game's writing for being a huge fucking disappointment. Please rest assured that any frustration I express here is entirely directed at the game.

Long story short: I'm not convinced this is a legitimately well-thought-out piece of character writing for Kaito that actually has any deliberate connection to his issues. It just reads to me like whoever wrote it saw the Love Suite thing as an excuse to throw in something shipbaity and romantically-undertoned involving Kaito, and they decided that someone like him would work best with the stereotypical "rivals to lovers" trope, so they just threw together a scene about that.

There's no reason to buy that Kaito's "ideal fantasy" would even be with a romantic interest in the first place. He's literally not shown giving the slightest fuck about romance at any other point in his story! Romantic relationships are not inherently the highest relationship ideal (any claim that they are is amatonormativity speaking and needs to go away), and Kaito in particular definitely seems to be someone who would understand that.

It is interesting to think that Kaito's idea of his relationship ideal could be a rival - someone who's essentially more of an equal to him than a sidekick. All the points that you make on that topic are really great and insightful, and that’s what made me want to check out the scene! But then the scene just goes and shifts to being all about how Kaito has very-obviously-implicitly developed romantic feelings for this rival, and ugh no no no this is not the point and not necessary. If Kaito really did subconsciously think of a rival as being his ideal relationship, someone who's his equal and to whom he doesn't have such a huge responsibility to never let down, that alone would be the point, and his subconscious wouldn't go and then make it about romance!

If this scene is about Kaito's issues as you propose, then it’s as if the writing is trying to insist that Kaito subconsciously knew that he needed to have this arguably more healthy, essentially-equal relationship in order to be able to achieve romance, because romance is obviously the highest goal and what he's really wanted all along and if only he got over his issues then he’d be able to have that in reality! and NOPE nope nope nope that's amatonormative and tedious as all hell and get that bullshit away from Kaito. (The actual "ideal" relationship Kaito should be striving for, though he wouldn't understand this himself, is something like the one I talked about at the end of Salmon Team, in which he's learned to open up to Shuichi and ask for his help too and they are friends and equals who support each other, and that doesn't need to involve romance to be an ideal end goal!)

But also, because the writers of this scene are being so eye-rollingly amatonormative about things, I'm not convinced they even actually thought as deeply as you have about the implications of the rival thing. If they understood Kaito's issues about heroes and sidekicks and friendship to that extent, then they'd probably also be able to grasp the idea that romance isn't the goddamn point here.

So, yeah. You're free to continue to interpret it the way you've been doing if that floats your boat, anon, but my take on it is just that I don't think the writers cared.

I'd also like to throw out there, while I'm here being a Grumpy Aro about things, that someone not expecting their crush to reciprocate their feelings isn't that sad and tragic, at least not from where I'm standing - it's just sensible. Sure, platonic affection is expected to grow naturally through shared experiences and hangouts, to the point that someone feeling like their friend doesn't consider them a friend in return is tragic and probably rooted in some kind of issues. But while romantic attraction can sometimes arise, from all sorts of interactions, it’s never a thing that should always be expected to do so, and it literally can't happen in certain orientations a lot of the time. Not expecting romantic feelings to be reciprocated doesn't have to be related to any kind of lack of self-confidence; it should be the norm. It's just statistically unlikely that they would be.

Like yeah, sure, obviously most people with a crush would like it if it was reciprocated, and so there's no harm in asking. But if the other person doesn't reciprocate, then it's not their fault and not their problem, and it's also not the first person's fault for "not being good enough" or anything like that. That's an attitude that I wish I saw more of outside of aro circles, and it's also something that I'm pretty sure Kaito would already understand and agree with. Respecting other people's autonomy, acknowledging that they exist as their own person outside of how you feel about them and not making their lives about you are all principles that are already a big part of how Kaito treats others, in any context.

ok you’ll think i’m a bit crazy for this but i think felicia x ryoma is adorable. their supports were the cutest thing i’ve ever read, i almost shat out kittens and rainbows. idk why i even paired them up in the first place, think they mightve been all that was left and i said f it but they were precious together and i also think pink haired shiro is lit fam, he ROCKS that hair color. xander’s supports with felicia were admittedly adorable as well, she is just a total cinnamon roll. i would marry her myself if it were possible (god i love that maid outfit)

also i said i love laslodin but i’m equally torn between that and xanlas as well, even better if you tack on leodin and selena/camilla. i just love the royal/retainer dynamics with the awakening trio!! i want them to have nice things and be loved and also i want the royals to be lured in by their ~enigmatic pasts~ and dive right into their secrets. also laslow is a bottom and needs a dom and xander is currently unemployed in that department. nuff said

as for corrin i have a soft spot in my heart for corrin/jakob bc i married him in my first playthrough (and ugh did i LOVE coming home to him <3) but corrin/kaden had adorable supports and i’ve married him twice so I love them too. i also love corrin/laslow bc um i love laslow very much hes my precious son and they admittedly had cute supports too! i love to think of them on tea dates bc laslow loves tea and corrin is somewhat of a sheltered princess and i recall she tried so hard to make good tea in her jakob supports which means i bet she likes tea too :)

ok i want u to picture this: azura/kaze. i paired them up on my latest playthrough and their supports were so wholesome i almost cried, they are so sweet together!!

TIME FOR A LONG POST

1. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Jakob. Like a few other characters, he’s kind of a character that I kind of like AS a character, but personality wise I could totally take or leave him lol. Like whether I like him or not depends entirely on my mood. But if you ever see me hating on him don’t take me too seriously because I dont actually really hate him.

Most people, of course, are bothered by him being kind of an asshole to a lot of the cast. I can understand why this bothers people and it is a legit reason to dislike him, but it actually doesn’t bother me that much because I know where he’s coming from and exactly why he acts this way. I’m not sure if the majority of people really understand this entirely but as we know Jakob has basically been abused his entire life. His parents were cold and loveless to each other and to him, and then they dumped him on the castle doorstep where he was taken in as a servant, but he SUCKED MAJORLY so he was then abused verbally and physically by the rest of the staff. When you keep all this in mind, Corrin was most probably the first person who ever showed him genuine kindness and gentleness. Which to him, rose Corrin to a level of a god in his mind. So because of all of his bad experiences with other people, I believe Jakob’s poor attitude and him being rude, cold and sometimes mean to others is actually a defense mechanism. Since he’s run into so many shitty people his entire life, I think he believes most people are no good. Like aside from Corrin who is an extraordinary exception, he has no reason to believe most other people wont be harsh and cruel to him like they’ve always been his entire life. So he pushes away most other people with a cold, cruel and harsh attitude of his own. He mistrusts people by default.

So when you look at it like that, his attitude kind of understandable, and for me it makes his attitude more tolerable. He’s kinda like a puppy dog that adores their master but barks at literally everyoen else. It’s kinda cute tbh. I also enjoy the supports where he’s nice to people like Hinoka’s and Azura’s (and I ship him with them tbh LOL. You know he faints in Azura’s S rank right I die). And at least Jakob is like upfront about his assholery and not weirdly selective about it like Silas is in his supports with Azura and Hana.

Also quickly unit wise– unfortunately I never end up using Jakob that much. He’s basically obsolete from the get go in Birthright since you start with Sakura and get Azama only a few chapters later (and the ninjas fill the dagger role better than he does too unfortunately). I find I got the best mileage out of Jakob in Conquest where he usually sticks around as a mainstay in my party until chapter 13 at least and is a pretty good asset in the earlier chapters like the Ice Tribe one. But unfortunately again when I end up getting better units further down the road in Conquest, one way or another Jakob just always ends up dropping off to the bench. I feel a bit bad about it but that’s how things end up going.

Also really quickly I guess I should talk about Jakob and Kaze. Yall may have noticed they’re actually kind of similar characters, and not really only with their devotion toward Corrin. I generally feel like Jakob is an meaner, fancier version of Kaze, it’s like he’s the negative Kaze lol. Personally I find Kaze more interesting than Jakob because all of Jakob’s development as a character happened BEFORE the game started so it happened OFF screen. We don’t get to see it, and are just told that it happened. This isn’t bad story telling in itself but for me it makes it difficult to immerse myself or emotionally invest in it. I find Kaze easier to latch on to because we get to SEE his development happen in his A rank with Corrin and a bit in BR ch 15. I do like Jakob to some effect tho. He’s an ok dude.

2. I guess you could say that I could rank every non Kaze/Corrin support on a kind of vague spectrum. And if we’re doing that, I would honestly put Kaze/Rinkah on the higher side of it. I kinda like these two together, but I don’t think that they could really work out well romantically, but more on that later.

First of all I do think they have a cute and funny support. Kaze is totally unbothered by Rinkah’s fire, and totally brushes off all her snippy tsundere rage at every turn. He can definitely see right through her and knows it’d probably be better for her to just indulge in eating sweets every now and again instead of denying it. I actually kind of like these two in a buddy buddy way I think. This is probably because they’re in a lot of chapters together. Like they both fight you in chapter 2, and then both rejoin you later in chapter 4. And in Conquest theyre together in chapter 12 or whatever. Even though they dont really interact in these later chapters, and just kinda show up, simply the fact that they show up together so frequently is enough for some people to try to tie them together in some sense. And it makes me see them as some level of natural good friends.

Okay now romantically (and this is really opinion and perspective based so bare with me) PERSONALLY, ROMANTICALLY, I don’t think they’d really work out that well. WHY? Okay well for Kaze we know that he is the type of person who likes taking care of others and improving their QoL. He does it in basically 97% of his supports, and he does it in Rinkah’s too. Kaze is a retainer and a servant and he’s been raised to serve his entire life. It’s not only his kind of duty and responsibility to take care of other people, but I honestly think he just generally likes doing it (I could go deep into a character analysis about this but that’s for another time I think LOL).

So romantically, this aspect of Kaze wouldn’t change. I think he would want to coddle and take care of his partner and just indulge them and make sure they would WANT FOR NOTHING. This is why I think he’s naturally attracted to girls like Sakura (like, I think Sakura is his “type” since he says he’s been crushing on her for a long time in their S rank) because Sakura, while she is strong and capable in her own way yes, also needs to be taken care of to some extent because of her anxiety issues and shyness ect. And she could definitely benefit a lot from Kaze’s loving and supportive nature. She’s someone who needs a good solid support to help her along and go through stressful things with her. Kaze is perfect in that role for Sakura.

But for Rinkah? Not so much. Rinkah doesn’t want to be coddled. I mean, YEAH, she indulges in the sweets that Kaze gives her throughout their support, but I don’t think she’s the type of person who wants to be babied and indulged too much. Like Kaze gives a specific kind of affection and I don’t think she’s the type of person, with her personality, to fully appreciate that kind of love that he wants to give.I mean, it’s even kind of heavily implied in their S rank with this line.

Rinkah is assertive and strong and dominant. She is fire. That’s one aspect of her personality that I don’t think will ever change. I’m not saying they would have a bad or unhappy relationship, (they’d probably find a balance eventually and fall into a kind of natural rhythm). But because of her natural personality she wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate the kind of love Kaze wants to give, imo. Like, his words to her up there are lost on her. BUT, like I said, that’s just my two cents on the entire thing.

Because of that, while I do like them together, and they are on the the higher side of the “Kaze supports spectrum” Rinkah wouldn’t be my first choice to S rank him to you know. I kind of like Rinkah with people like Ryoma who help her try to tone down and settle her anger, but is also on a similar level with her personality wise. THAT’S ALL I GOT

His personal skill is Collector, which is super neat because hey! free stuff! :D He also has Seal Magic which could be good with his terrible less than stellar Resistance, and Good Fortune, which restores up to 20% HP EACH TURN, well.... based on his luck stat, which is..... pretty bad lmao- maybe he has a really good Luck stat growth idk (I peeked at the output file after having played the chapter and his stat growths are HP = 15, Str = 30, Mag = 35, Skill = 50, Spd = 25, Lck = 50, Def = 20, Res = 40, so yeah, pretty decent barring HP and Def haha;;;) But LOOK AT THAT STRENGTH HE’S A BEAST AND A C RANK IN SPEARS THAT’S FANTASTIC UGH- Kaze........ my man, I can’t wait to see what you can Heart Seal into it could probably be really cool, or..... pretty bad, idk anything could happen with this randomiser

I just realised how ironic his randomised class was; he went from a light, speed based Hoshidan class to a bulky, defence based Nohrian class ahahah;;;
