Being both aroace and a huge nerd, it irks me a little that 99% of the asexual and/or aroace headcanons I see (and not aroallo headcanons interestingly, which could be its own post but I digress) are about characters who spend all their time working/studying/etc…. scientists, academics, introverts, shut-ins, even. I assume the common reasoning is that these characters only care about their work and don’t have time for things like relationships and sex. But like. You know that’s not what asexuality is… right 😀

Obviously it’s fine to headcanon these types of characters as ace, but I just always wonder about allo fans’ reasoning for it and what it implies about their opinions of asexual people. When the ONLY characters you can think of as ace are just nerdy, quiet/socially awkward characters with no other canon implications that they’d be ace, to me it just sounds like you think people are asexual because they can’t attract sexual partners? Or because they don’t have time for relationships??

Anyway it just annoys me a little that this is the VAST majority of the ace representation I see, both in canon and fandom. I’m an aroace academic, but I’m not aroace because I don’t have time for people or because I’m shy or awkward or lonely or whatever. I’m aroace because I’m aroace lol

Tl;dr, asexual/aroace people aren’t all innocent nerdy introverts (and aroallos aren’t all extroverts with a long history of one night stands, btw). Let ace characters be loud and stupid. Or try headcanoning a loud and stupid character as ace (you can do it, I promise)

Eddie loved to read. He enjoyed immersing himself in books, letting the stories wash over him, and escaping his own reality for the imaginations of another. He adopted new personas and became someone else as he skimmed every word. He put himself in the shoes of people he could only dream of and let their lives replace the problems in his.

On the other hand, Steve hated reading. He sat alone for hours staring at words without meaning with letters that floated through paper and dripped from the pages. He couldn’t derive any knowledge from books nor could he enjoy the lives of the characters or the storylines of novels. As soon as the wretched piece of paper flipped, whatever contents were on it were swiped from his memory. He never understood the literary importance of any book much less hidden meanings somehow woven into the pages that the English teachers talked about.

After escaping the talons of both Vecna and the mob out for blood, the boys were left with too much time and too little to do. No one wanted to hire someone that associated with the town’s not-so-secret-teen-killer and on the off chance that they went into public, they were persecuted by their peers.

To deal with the boredom, loneliness, and restlessness alike, Eddie turned to reading. He would dive right into the words like Steve had dived into Lover’s Lake. He would adopt the lives of the characters and pretend that maybe his life wasn’t so bad after all.

Steve watched Eddie flip each page, a look of innocent wonder on his face and a hopeful smile on his lips. They couldn’t do book club or share notes on what was being read but Steve could still follow the emotion of the story through Eddie’s expressions and the trace of a finger along his jumping pulse. Eventually, Eddie would read aloud. He’d keep Steve entranced in the story with his raspy voice combing through every word. Sometimes he’s stumble, his eyes moving faster than his mouth could speak, but it was still the most satisfying thing Steve had ever heard.

On a random Thursday when they finally finish the book, Steve holds Eddie’s face in his hands and delicately kisses his lips for the first time.

“Maybe now it’s time we start our own story, Eds.”

And so they do.

Hello, Mr. Gaiman! I’m sure you get a ton of messages like this, but I still wanted to say thank you for the amazing representation in Good Omens. The show really helped me come to terms with my asexuality. For most of my life I knew I wasn’t straight, but I’d always had trouble with labels as nothing felt quite right. I felt like I didn’t fit in with anyone, and after taking a few poorly constructed internet quizzes I had come to the conclusion that I was asexual. This wasn’t exactly thrilling news for me. Practically all the ace characters I’d been exposed had been portrayed as cold, distant, and emotionless. All that “representation” did was make me feel more like an outsider. Asexuality was usually treated as something unnatural and practically inhuman.

A few weeks ago, I finally watched Good Omens after putting it off for a few years, and wow I really should have watched it sooner. For the first time ever, I saw a love story that I could truly relate to. Here were Crowley and Aziraphale, two asexual supernatural beings who were in love with each other. Seeing that made me feel like I could be asexual and that it could be just as beautiful, romantic, and real as any other relationship. Not only did I (and many other queer people) feel seen, but Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship also touched the heart of my mostly homophobic mother lol. So thank you for all that you do Neil! You’ve quickly become one of my favourite authors! Representation matters.

Has anyone here seen Elementary? There’s a scene early in the series where Watson helps Sherlock stay awake by showing him how to do squats to get his blood pumping. Kuras does the same.

Also he’s making flashcards! Unironically I think this is a highlight for him.

His Best Subject is obviously any kind of Biological Science, but I think he’s also really good for History.

He’s good at studying on his own, but the second he’s in a Buddy System he just starts doing. The Most.

I’m talking like an hour and a half at least of set up where he’s getting drinks and snacks and a nest of pillows and blankets set up so your backs don’t get sore hunched over a table.

Lowkey I think he’s trying to be The Study Buddy Ever for you, but he doesn’t quite clock that all the prep work is eating into your study time and while that can be okay if the test isn’t pressing, if you’re cramming it’s a problem.

Once he’s settled though, he’s actually really helpful.

Very “there’s no stupid questions!” about it all, and will work with you to make sure you’ve got it all down.

Every magician worth his salt knows how to study, damnit, he’s just a social himbo.

His best subjects I think are Psychology and Social Studies. He’s a People Person.

He’s either not helping even a little bit by not showing up or not helping even a little bit by being a distraction.

He is bored off his ass almost the entire time, and he will make it your problem by just going on the most random of tangents after he’s done complaining.

And failing that, he’ll just go take a big nap somewhere.

He just curls right up and goes to snoozeville for like an hour before waking up and going “you’re STILL at it???”

If you want him to engage with you—or even just stick around, really—you’re going to have to bribe him in some way or another.

Of course he asks for the most out of pocket shit but tbh I think if you’ve got good snacks and something cozy he’ll just take it as a break.

Generally though he’s very much just doing his own thing while you study, it’s barely beneficial to either of you.

Except sometimes you talk at him while he draws you mayhaps…

It’s canon that he’s really artistically talented so I think his Best Subjects are Art and Literature. Those are the two things you have any hope of getting help from him on.

Ais also takes some convincing to come around and help, tbh—

He doesn’t strike me as a guy that really studies, not just because of his personality but because he’s literally part of a Hivemind I’m pretty certain he can just ping for information if he really needs it.

But once he’s gotten settled he’s actually a surprisingly good rubber duck, letting you talk at him about theory and formula while he pokes around your space.

Like Vere, I think he naps if he’s not directly involved but he a) usually gives a head’s up but b) ends up snoring really loud which makes studying a nightmare.

Sometimes he’ll actually pay attention—maybe even leaning over the back of your chair to read over your shoulder sometimes—and you find out he’s really good at actually taking a look at a concept and Getting It really fast.

Just… don’t ask him to explain it to you.

That’s a different skill set that I don’t think he quite has off the bat.

Surprisingly maybe I think his Best Subject is Math/Arithmetic. There’s just something about how cut and dry the formulas are that make it click for him really well. Also lowkey good at Biology, specifically the behavioral side of Animal Biology.

Genuinely, I don’t think Mhin has either the patience or the social bandwidth to be a decent study partner.

The best you’re getting out of them is someone who’s leading by example.

Mhin will get their own book, sit next to you, and read. And if you make any kind of noise or significant disturbance, they’ll grumble or nudge your chair to tell you to be quiet.

You can ask them to help with review questions if you want, but I think unless it’s something they already know, don’t expect any type of feedback outside of eye contact.

If it’s a regular thing and you get the chance to get used to each other, they might occasionally mention stuff in their own reading that they find interesting/you might find interesting, but generally it’s few and far between.

Just because they’re not really helping doesn’t mean they want to be a distraction, unlike some…

Like Kuras, I think Mhin is really good at Science, specifically Anatomy, but they also have a bit of a soft spot for Poetry and Strategy.

Alright, it’s finally here, I worked on this like all month and it’s STILL somehow late, but I finished my pride month piece !! I’m so happy with it ! I had a blast with this even if I desperately wish I released it on-time, but oh well. I did enjoy making this, I tried to have each of them show off their respective flags by wearing accessories that to me felt in character for them. Alphys wearing enamel pins, Papyrus wearing stickers, Asgore’s flower crown, Mettaton’s feather boa and earrings, Sans literally just scribbling his flag colors on a shitty piece of paper and taping it to his forehead, etc. I also gave Papyrus and Alphys paraphernalia related to their special interests. It was definitely Frisk’s idea to wrap that gay ass ribbon around Flowey’s pot, though. Don’t worry he’s not homophobic lol, he just doesn’t care and doesn’t wanna be part of this picture. I did make Alphys and Mettaton’s proportions slightly off and it kills me a little but oh well. I also deliberately made this in a CMYK color profile, because I wanna make this into prints, someday. If that’s something you’d be interested in, please sound off in the replies ! I’d love to hear ! These are all my personal headcanons for the characters’ identities. I’ll list them in order from left to right (ironically saving probably the gayest character for last) in case some of the lesser known identities or flags get lost in translation.

Reasoning: Okay heads up I just caught up with the anime (Episode 12) and haven’t read the manga. This is based on what I know so far:

For aromantic, he has feelings for Momo but he prioritizes their friendship. He may be demi and thus only developed romantic-like feelings after he got close with her.

For asexual, for a teenage male anime protagonist I’m surprised he makes like 0 pervy comments, like ever, like at all! Bro literally sees Momo half naked in the first episode and hardly noticed it lol. And heck whenever Aira talks to him about physical intimacy and stuff he’s just kinda always comically disgusted in her lol.

Yeah anyway I think he’s aroacespec, and this show makes me very happy to see a romance arc that doesn’t feel shoehorned. I always used to be super angry at this in media but I’m actually rooting for Momo and Okarun.

I wonder how Zeus is gonna explain Apollo’s disappearance.Since Apollo’s domain started acting up as soon as he disappeared will they (except for those in the know)think he died somehow?Wait I can see that potentially leading to Brunhilde and maybe the humans finding out what they unintentionally caused.If the Sun on Valhalla started destabilizing not just for Earth that’s pretty noticeable I think.Especially since the human competitors is on Valhalla.Hades and Poseidon died publicly so the other gods know why their domains are going wonky.Apollo won his match.When the Sun started growing/acting up I’m assuming Artemis or someone else went looking for him or tried to find him. Murder mystery on who killed Apollo lol.

How long has it been since their deaths and Apollo’s disappearance tho?I’ve got no idea the actual times between matches in canon.Hours?Days?A week?Having to wait an hour between each match would suck as a spectator.My butt would be hurting in those stands.There is a pretty severe time difference between universes so for all we know when they go to the ROR universe it’ll be minutes after Apollo got thrown into PJO.

The consequences is MUCH clearer on Earth than Valhalla because since Ragnarok started nobody is allowed to leave the floating Island where things are happening. So unless someone sneaks around outside of that floating Island and goes to Earth or Poseidon's and Apollo's abode, nobody would notice anything.

Does she care about humanity ? Yes

But was that love strong enough to choose her sisters over her lover in Tartarus who can only escape thanks to Ragnarok which will cost her sister's lives ? No

Brunhilde cares about humanity and her sisters, sure, but let’s not pretend her actions don’t contradict that care. her care for humanity and her sisters, though genuine, is not strong enough to overcome her own personal desires and emotions.

At the end of the day, she’s doing all of this to get her lover out of Tartarus, and that’s the problem. She’s not making decisions based on what’s best for humanity or her sisters—she’s letting her emotions drive everything.

Yeah, she cries for the humans who die in Ragnarok. Yeah, she clearly loves her sisters. But is that love strong enough to stop her from putting them on the line to fuel her plan?

Nope.

Even Buddha calls her out on that

Actions speak louder than words. It doesn’t matter how many tears she sheds or how many heartfelt speeches she gives—what matters is what she actually does. And what she’s doing is risking everything and everyone to satisfy her own personal desires.

It’s like if someone was a philanthropist but secretly abused animals and has a sex slave. Does the good outweigh the bad ? Maybe. But it also makes you question what their priorities really are.

OK so this is where being a Korean person in Korea who is fluent in English and well versed in American pop culture (up to a point) hits a limit. I actually don't understand what you guys are doing when you do the whole 'mommy' and 'mother' thing. The cultural position of Mother in Korea is completely asexual , and self-abnegating in the Giving Tree style - she is the one who sacrifices, who care-takes, who suffers in silence, is all accepting and never critical. (Personally this is why I think so many of us Korean women are refusing to become mothers, bc this role fucking sucks as defined.)

But when you guys say Mother - it means something else, doesn't it? So if Seonghwa is happy to hear it, maybe he understands what you're getting at?

In any case, I think he's actually queer and that's why he is willing to show himself in touch with his feminine side. You can have a gentle and soft persona off-stage, and many many many Korean boy idols absolutely cultivate exactly that image, without going over into being actually as feminine or queer as Seonghwa has done.

Moreover, to be super cynical about this, it's a pretty clever marketing strategy for someone who wants to have a long term show business career when his home base is Korean women. Because Korean culture is so confrontational, energetic and competitive, us tired modern women are desperate for the relaxing, the harmless, the soft, and the gentle in men. Being able to present yourself as the super-handsome, wild-on-stage man who, off-stage, in a fantasy version of 'real life,' is at heart a fastidious, soft-spoken good girl just like you? ABSOLUTE CATNIP. Also, so smart! It helps him differentiate himself from the rest of his group too, who tend to stay within established masculine roles. Wooyoung dancing in a skirt or Yeosang being very pretty isn't the same as being feminine, to me.

This isn't what you asked, but I will also add: Seonghwa puts on the 'soft spoken' voice which isn't his actual speaking voice. Wooyoung, who is irrepressible and competitive, has expertly imitated the 'muted' voice effect that Seonghwa does when speaking to Atiny in one of their behind the scenes things right after Seonghwa said something, asking' Why can't you just talk using your normal voice?' for example. Wooyoung exposed him on the spot like that, because he knows it's very seductive to Korean women lol.

OH and - you actually asked this - do I think he'll ever come out? And actually announce like, hi, I'm gay/bi/pan and this is my boyfriend? I mean, it doesn't seem likely, but if you know anything about Korea, you'll know that when we experience a shift, the shift is abrupt, fast and complete. So I wouldn't rule it out, but I will say - I feel myself to be living in very mainstream Korean middle class society, and I work for a very big corporation, I live in Seoul, and I don't know a single out person from work, school, social network, or church in my real life. It's a chicken and egg thing, but I do think that until more ordinary, every day queer people can come out, and like date in public like straights do, people who need to stay on the right side of public opinion, like idols and actors, wouldn't be ok coming out until the 'main' time of their career is over.

perhaps this is a weird question, but i feel so conflicted about this dude. i met him on a dating app, things were good for a while. he wanted to see me a lot, we hung out a few times, and one day i went over to his house. keep in mind i was 18 and he was 19. he would tell me about his past hookups, mostly his friends girlfriends, and his past use of drugs. i understand now that he just wanted to hook up, and personally, that’s not me. i’m not asexual, but i hold that level of physical intimacy in a very high regard. i’m not of the ideal body type that most men look for, so the idea of showing him my body, especially without being in a proper, committed relationship upset me. so i went home after watching a couple movies, and within a couple days, he began to ghost me. i gave it a week after asking him if i had done something before unadding him.

eventually he found me again. upon seeing that i was not miserable without him, he quickly unfollowed me. i had taken myself out on a little date to the city gardens lol. it’s been quite a few months since then. i’ve worked on myself and “glowed up” quite a bit. i’m more confident, conversational, figured out my makeup and style, and got back into the gym. he followed me again a few days ago, and in a fit of plain ignorance, i followed him back. i wanted to see how he was, considering things weren’t left on the best terms. secretly, i missed him a lot. i’d dream about him on occasion, and wish things had been different, which is maybe why i followed him back.

he hasn’t messaged me, which confuses and quite frankly upset me. i hate him, but i want him back. i don’t know how to feel, and i’m so god damn conflicted. i’ve never been in a relationship before, and he was the first dude i ever tried to date. after him i swiftly gave up to focus on myself instead, figuring maybe i wasn’t ready. but i am now. what do i do 😭 do i give him a chance if he presents it, or do i remove him from my life before he gets the chance?

Fundamentally, you need to ask yourself if you're actually interested in this guy or if you're just looking for validation.

From the sounds of it he was only interested in a quick hookup, and that's not your cup of tea - but he's still trying to keep you on the hook in case you change your mind.

Honestly I don't think they're worth your time, and you shouldn't try to change yourself to meet the expectations and criteria of someone else - especially when they don't have your interests at heart.

Dust yourself off, feel proud of your achievements, and look forward to finding someone who is a better fit.
