I’m going to get sappy and sentimental for a moment, so stay with me here.

On September 21, 2023 I posted my first fic after 18 months of not writing. I didn’t really think anyone would want to read it (especially bc I am emotionally bonded to s12 and still haven’t moved on), but people read it and loved it and I realised just how much I missed it.

Since then I’ve published at least once per calendar month, and my published word count is sitting at over 130 THOUSAND words in the year since, with 101K published in 2024 so far. I never thought I’d be able to write that much or be so consistent with my writing and posting. And I couldn’t have done it without the support of people here. I could never take this little community for granted. I owe it some of the greatest friendships in my life.

It’s now September 21, 2024. I can’t wait for another fucking incredible year.

Wish me luck as I get back on that sci-fi/fantasy short fiction grind. There are spreadsheets. There are self made deadlines. There are days reserved for the masters thesis and days reserved for monsters that climb into your pool.

I've been counting how many people the WoL kills and, doing the yellow quests, blue quests, and some class quests, we're at ~161 kills by MSQ 23.

I have not counted the dungeons yet. I have not counted every person we defeat in combat, only the ones likely or confirmed dead, and some of the "possibly" dead ones. Not counting the "possibly" dead, we're still at 134.

8. Do you prefer the beginning, middle, or end of a story?

The beginning is the simplest, so I like writing that! I’ve developed a weird ‘single opening line’ style over this past year, so sometimes that comes to me relatively quickly, and then I can set the rest of the scene from there! Otherwise, it’s just a matter of working backwards from the middle 🙂

20. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?

I can say that I used to use the phrase “huffed a laugh” constantly. Still do, to an extent. But to be fair, it's a good phrase XD

I mean, I guess there’s the ‘everything will be okay’ vibes most of my fics have, too, but that’s a subjective thing for sure!

74. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?

Actually this question is funny because I was thinking of making an alt AO3 account for Reasons, but the way I write Mario is so distinct and I have no interest in changing it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. So if I end up making that alt account after all, then nobody say anything, alright? 😘

webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

Frodo is acting restless and his friends are afraid he's going to run off with no warning like Bilbo had done. Do they talk to him about their concerns? NO! CONSPIRACY TIME!!

Merry going up to Sam, the gardener who none of them have really spoken to much before, to be like "Hey do you want to help me spy on your boss? It's because of friendship."

THIS WORKS.

Sam gets super caught and has the fear of Gandalf put in him but he just bats his beautiful eyes and goes "Oh, I listened because I couldn't help myself!" and plays up the simple salt-of-the-earth thing to keep from giving away that no he was absolutely spying on purpose.

Frodo spends the next six months thinking he's being very secretive but also wistfully sighing "Shall I ever look down into that valley again, I wonder?" every time he goes for a walk

Honestly it is AMAZING that Pippin didn't crack

At some point Merry and Pippin get together to filk the Misty Mountain song because having topical music is of course a vital part of any escape plan.
