Spy x Family Volume 11 Ultra Collector
Tumblr media
Well, I'm going to be a little late with Spy x Family and the start of Apothecary Diaries today because my afternoon is very busy, so let me show off this really cool Spy Fam special edition from French publisher Kurokawa.
Yeah, there's a hell of a lot in here, and a lot to chat about. Let me start with the box first. Truthfully, I'm sort of let down by it. It's less robust than the volume 8 special edition's box that is a bottom and a lid. Volume 11's using a thinner/lighter box overall and opens via flaps on the side instead of lifting up the top.
Tumblr media
What I do like about this box though is how it sticks close in style to volume 8's. Where 8 was a suitcase, volume 11 is all about a TV, which has a pretty fun gimmick. That illustration of Anya, Loid, and Yor? You can actually swap it out with 3 others to "change the channel" on the TV. It's a fun way to spice up the exterior, but I have just one complaint: it's rather finnicky. The card that the illustrations are on is just sorta "in" the box, so it slides and moves around and whatnot. I would have really appreciated a little pocket or sleeve on the inside that the card slid into, but also, this is just the package that the good stuff comes in.
So speaking of good stuff, the tote bag. It's very fun, and surprisingly good quality. The bag also features the illustration of the Forger family on both sides of the bag. I wouldn't say it's the biggest ever, but you could comfortably use it for light to medium shopping in terms of manga. Can't fit 10+ volumes in here easily, but I think anything less than that is plenty fine.
Tumblr media
Alright, next up is the books. Now, this is the special edition for volume 11, but there's another volume in here? Well that's because they include the Spy x Family light novel 'Family Portrait' with it. Very cool to see, but I do sort of wish we could have had a special cover for it as well. Though I mean, beggars can't be choosers we got one for Volume 11. Also, I really appreciate that French pubs either make the dust jackets reversible, or keep the original dust jacket alongside the special one. For display purposes it's very handy.
Tumblr media
Both the coolest but most frustrating piece in this special edition is the bookend. I think it's a super cool thing to add, especially since it's metal, but that's also where the problem comes in. You need to bend the bookend to make it a bookend. With it being metal, there's not really any going back if you wanted to just display it as a metal card. Not something I like, so it'll be living as metal card forever. Though it's not like I have any alternatives for how they could avoid this issue, so it's a bit hard to voice it as a valid complaint.
Tumblr media
And now into the illustration cards. I love getting stuff like this because it gives you so much freedom. They're loose and individual, not double sided, and of decent size (the same size as the manga). Some might disagree, but I think it's fun that they're pre-existing artworks (two of the landscape cards are featured as a poster in the LN). Mostly because you get to 'have' the art from various places as their own separate thing. Really liked one of the color pages or illustrations for Spy x Family, but Viz doesn't do color pages for the manga? Well, now you get them here and separate from the manga. Just a nice touch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of nice touches, the bookmarks. They're just from the various covers of the manga, but I think as a sentiment they're a very nice addition (especially because I don't have any bookmarks at all). Just something very simple and easy to add to flesh out the goodies you can get from the special edition.
Tumblr media
So there it is, the super cool 'ultra collector' edition of Spy x Family. This is a really interesting addition to my collection and I think a lot of the pieces to this are very unique in terms of what you'll see with special editions. Word of warning though, it's not a cheap special edition. Considering how much comes with it, I'd still say it's worth it for those that enjoy it, but it's not something that a lot of people will "just pick up".

Book Review: 'Ascendance of a Bookworm' #17 (4.5)
Ascendance of a Bookworm, Vol. 17 (Part 4, Volume 5) by Miya Kazuki
Tumblr media
adventure
fantasy
magic
library science
librarian
royal academy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
An intriguing pattern has emerged in terms of Lady Rozemyne's tendency to demand change, as well as of the authority of those who recognize the significance of the change she demands. Notably, the individuals who attune themselves to Rozemyne's wild ideas, and rightfully discern her curiosity as worth revering, are usually two or three degrees removed from positions of high authority. Meanwhile, most people who scoff, disregard, or glance askew whenever the young woman's ideas come to the fore are usually those with the power to make change happen.
ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v17 completes the remainder of seasons in-between Rozemyne's first and second years at the Royal Academy. She visits the northern region of Groschel, to further establish the paper-making industry, and she tends to myriad events at the castle, including the welcoming of two ladies of Ahrensbach, whom have now married into the family. But Rozemyne's standards for industry growth are high, and her tendency to forget her directives and chat up suspected enemies on tangential topics gives everyone an ulcer. In short, the usual.
The current volume is another collection of awkward and interwoven castle affairs. Naturally, many such events threaten to spiral out of control but never do, which speaks well of the author's sprawling network of subplots, but doesn't do much for readers interested in some decent drama.
For example, when Rozemyne goes to Groschel, she leans on her attendant, Brunhilde, who is native to the area. But their visit is replete with problems: the lower city is deeply impoverished, the nobility is stiff and uncompromising, and the local water supply is polluted. Will the paper-making industry forsake setting down roots in an area with so little social progress? Brunhilde doesn't see much of a problem with simply ordering the commoners to do the tasks and then blaming them when things go wrong. But Rozemyne, careful not to offend but conscientious of the need to be truthful, sets the young woman straight: The people are responsible for the work, true, but the nobility is responsible for the people and their environment; it's all connected.
ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v17 reinforces the novel series' most essential emerging theme: egalitarianism. Quintessentially Japanese though not without other cultural precedence, the equal delegation of opportunity, the equal expectation of good work, and the shared consequences of failure are fundamental convictions of this novel series.
Counter-navigating an ambush during a wedding ceremony? Appeasing the anxiety of a newlywed woman who once felt trapped in her own home? Staying mindful of the watchful gazes of the surrounding duchies once the new school year begins? In each of these scenarios, Rozemyne must rely on her own wits, as well as the untested virtue of individuals who do not always have the station or authority to make a change. When Lady Aurelia of Ahrensbach marries into the family, will she be bitter and ambitions, or will she be uncertain of her position? When Adolphine of the Duchy of Dunkelfelger keys on Rozemyne at the Royal Academy, is it because she's upholding a promise to the now-graduated Lady Eglantine, or is it because she spies value in the tiny blue-haired girl that no one else sees?
The number of scenes that lend one the impression of foreshadowing are high, but the number of scenes with legitimate action or drama are minimal. Readers may have to wait another volume to see if Philine's brief military training comes in handy, or if Ferdinand's warning about the conflict between the old factions' children usurping their parents ever comes to pass, or if Lady Adolphine's role swerves from pleasant nuisance to legitimate knave.

Compact Multifunctional Flat With Zoning Ideas
Located in a historic house in the centre of Moscow, this compact multifunctional flat, for a single male homeowner, measures just 33 square metres. Designer Alireza Nemati at Studio Bazi transformed the interior by implementing compact blocks to hold a mini kitchen and laundry, a reading room, a wet room, plus a pull out closet and shoe storage. The layout is an unusual one with plenty of off-beat inspiration on how you could make a small space work for you. Read on to view innovative zoning techniques, a design for reinforced bookshelves to combat the problem of a crumbling old interior wall, and a great way to fully utilise that awkward space under the stairs.
Photographer: Polina Poludkina   Typically, lounging is the first concept considered in the design of a living room, but this living space is definitely geared toward use as a reading room. A large bookcase has been installed along one entire wall in order to house the homeowners extensive personal library. This shelving stands between a kitchen block and a window wall. By the way, if you love living rooms with an emphasis on reading, don’t forget to check out our post: Living rooms for book lovers. The furniture chosen to populate the flat is predominantly of 1930’s design, which gives the space a trendy mid-century modern flair.
In order to keep the window unobstructed and easy to open, the end of the bookcase structure near to the glass is much shallower. This end panel is used as a place for hanging up spare folded chairs, which are on hand to quickly seat any guests.
Due to the age of the historical building in which the flat resides, the original walls have become tired and may crumble should heavy items be mounted into them. To combat this, stainless steel legs have been embedded into the structure of the bookshelf to endure both the furniture’s own weight and the heavy collection of books.
A chrome uplighter stands at the bottom of a modern staircase.
The staircase is an attractive combination of wooden treads and white risers.
Lining the length of the hallway, between the reading room and the bedroom, is what at first appears to be a run of closets. However, these volumes actually hold a kitchenette, laundry facilities and more.
Bespoke storage solutions have been fitted into the triangular space beneath the stairs, behind plain doors that quietly blend in with the white staircase structure.
Subtle handles allow the under stair volumes to be pulled out, revealing a generous amount of garment hanging space and a shoe rack.
There is even a chest of drawers incorporated into the pull-out closets, for stashing smaller items and casual pieces of clothing.
Directly opposite the under stair closets, the mini kitchen block is revealed from behind bifold wooden doors.
Inside the small kitchen block there is a decent selection of cabinets, a ventilated vegetable unit, a wall mounted dish draining rack, a hidden pull-out worktop and a refrigerator. Beside this kitchen unit, a laundry block holds a washing machine plus laundry supplies and household cleaning accessories.
Each element of this unique kitchen has been individually designed, prototyped and built for purpose in this home.
Every sliver of space is spoken for, every chopping surface assigned a special place.
A single wall sconce lights the tiny prep and cooking zone. This type of fixture is called an accordion lamp and you can get it here. A shallow shelf is just wide enough to support a limited selection of coffee mugs.
Above another of the secretive hallway units, a mysterious ceiling track extends across the width of the walkway…
… Residing within the unit standing below the ceiling track is a heavy privacy curtain that can be pulled out to separate the bedroom and shower room from the living zone.
The same wooden floor runs throughout the entire compact flat to create a seamless flow.
The modern white bedroom is minimalist in its aesthetic, and benefits from a generous amount of bright natural light. A single window curtain hangs at just one side of the set of three panes, keeping the look uncluttered.
A porthole window is cut in the side of the ensuite, allowing a view through to not only the bedroom but to the great outdoors too. The presence of this window gives the tiny ensuite a more open feel.
The door to the shower room is clear glass, but the curtain embedded in the unit opposite makes the space private when required.
All the walls of the home are painted plain gallery white.
The privacy curtain between the bedroom and living space makes the sleeping and bathing area more cosy.
A simple white side table acts as a bedside unit, decorated with only a modern table lamp. The table’s ‘C’ shaped frame allows the table to be pushed up close and wrap the side of the bed.
The narrow wash area contains a small wall mounted basin. There is no vanity unit present in order to save space, though a selection of toiletries are held on a bathroom shelf at one side.
Water drains over a water-tight wet room floor with a white marble finish.
Upstairs, a wall hung toilet is matched with a wall mounted toilet brush holder.
Immediately at the top of the stairs, a line of neat wooden coat pegs on a vertical wooden panel keep jackets tidy and off the floor.
A small stool is situated beneath the coat pegs as a handy spot on which to be seated when pulling shoes on and off.

Mobile Development Tools
Traditional desktop app development is dominated by large-scale software companies with huge workforces, sometimes scattered around the globe. However, the mobile app development industry is quite different. Its ecosystem has created a new breed of small-scale and highly efficient developers. Its dominant players are powered by innovation and efficiency, rather than by the number of heads on the payroll. Even an individual developer can produce a killer app that has millions of downloads in the app stores.
So how do these individuals or small teams of developers achieve such great results, without a large human workforce? It's because the mobile app ecosystem has a broad range of software tools that simplify the workflow and improve efficiency. There are tools that even guarantee certain types of functionality, up to certain standards.
In this post, you'll be exposed to various mobile development tools that enable you to make your app unique and stand out from the rest. With these tools, you can achieve success even without a large team of programmers.
1. General-Purpose Tools
These include Software Development Kits (SDKs) that make it possible to develop for a specific platform such as Android, iOS, and Windows. In addition, Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that help streamline the workflow also fall into this category.
1.1 Native Platform SDKs
An SDK usually consists of compiled core sources, supporting software libraries and various other components such as documentation, sample apps, etc., that are designed to facilitate app development. Platform SDKs can be defined as the immediately usable form of the platform's source code.
Android SDK & NDK
You can download Android SDK from the Android Developer website's Downloads section, free of charge. You just need to download the SDK command-line tools package that matches your OS and use the SDK Manager included there to download the other packages. Then, you can use this SDK to develop apps with or without the help of an Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
Unlike the SDK, which facilitates Java-based development, Android Native Development Kit (NDK) enables developers to implement their apps in the C or C++ languages. This comes in handy, especially when external libraries written in C or C++ are used within your app. Also, this ensures the fastest performance and maximum utilization of the device's hardware features. Therefore, if performance is the main criterion, you'd be better off using Android NDK.
You can find a large collection of Android tutorials on Envato Tuts+ that can help you get up and running in a flash.

iOS SDK
Similar to the Android SDK, you can download the iOS SDK, free of charge, once you register for an Apple Developer Center Account. However, you can't run the apps developed using that on an Apple device, unless you join the paid iOS Developer Program. However, you can still run your app on an emulator and test if it works correctly.
When you are ready to run your app on a real device, you can join the Developer Program and eventually publish the app on the App Store. If you need more help on iOS development, check out our iOS From Scratch series.

Windows 10 SDK
Microsoft has unified the app development process for different devices including PC, Mobile, Xbox One, and HoloLens, with its Universal Windows Platform (UWP). You can download the Windows 10 SDK (also supports UWP) from Microsoft Windows Dev Center and use it for developing mobile apps with other tools, such as mobile emulators, to test your app.
When used together with UWP, the Windows 10 SDK allows you to port your existing Android, iOS and older Windows apps to the latest Windows 10 platform. This is really great because it enables developers to expand their reach and target the broadest possible range of devices. Windows Phone SDK tutorials on Envato Tuts+ could be a great place to look for expert help.

1.2 Complete IDEs
IDEs help streamline your workflow and get the maximum out of the SDKs. They also save developers a great deal of time with clever features such as code completion, interactive debugging, and automated building.
Android Studio
Android Studio is the IDE officially supported by Google for building Android apps. It's an all-in-one IDE featuring intelligent code completion, fast and realistic device emulation, and robust build systems. You can share the same code base across many devices, ranging from wearables, through phones, to smart TVs.
The latest Android SDK is also bundled with Android Studio so that developers can start coding from day one. The older versions of the SDK can be downloaded via the SDK Manager included in the IDE. It's also full of sample apps, code templates, and project wizards that make life really easy for developers.
Android SDK

Xcode
If you are an iOS developer, you must get yourself familiar with Xcode, which includes the iOS SDK and a number of other useful tools. Similar to Android Studio, it's a productive environment for building apps for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Xcode's features include a powerful source-code editor, built-in interface builder, advanced device emulator, and complete, up-to-date documentation.
Anyway, you don't have much choice, because it's mandatory to use the Xcode IDE if you plan to publish your iOS apps to Apple's App Store. Xcode handles all the app signing and developer-key management, plus the verification process for app submission, so that developers can focus more on their core business rather than worrying about their apps' administrative overheads.
Xcode
What’s New in Xcode 9?
Doron Katz
Visual Studio
Visual Studio is the IDE of choice for Windows developers. It's from Microsoft, and therefore, you'll get the full support that you'd expect from the official vendor. With Visual Studio, you can use the same code base for desktop apps, mobile apps, and other Microsoft device-based apps.
Naturally, the Windows 10 SDK is bundled with the IDE, as in the case of Android Studio and Xcode. Visual Studio makes it easy for developers to find their way around a large code base with features such as Peek To Definition, improved GoTo, and more. Depending on your capacity and budget, you can select from three versions, namely Community, Professional, and Enterprise. Also, Visual Studio comes with two OS flavors, Windows and Mac. So it doesn't matter whether you own a PC or a Mac; you can use Visual Studio to code your next mobile app.
Not only that, but Visual Studio Code is a great IDE for coding cross-platform apps in JavaScript—for React Native, for example. Visual Studio Code is especially good for React Native development with the React Native tools extension. With that, you can run React Native commands from the GUI, view smart code completion prompts for React Native APIs, and even debug your apps from within the editor.
2. Special-Purpose Tools
These are the tools that enable your app to have a competitive advantage. That's really what it takes to build a killer app or a niche market. Here, you'll read about the most popular ones.
2.1 Game Engines
Mobile games are the most popular app category, in terms of download volume, on almost all the app stores. So, if you're planning to develop a mobile game, why not try one of these game engines?
Unity
Unity is a popular game development tool that can be used for creating a compelling user experience. Its features include an all-in-one editor, 2D and 3D workflow support, realistic physics engine, built-in UI creation components, and a lot more. Based on the size of your game development studio, you can choose a suitable version from Personal, Plus, or Pro.
Unity allows you to maintain a single code base and publish to multiple platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Unity is essentially packed with tons of features such as 360 panoramic video support, cinematic VR, and photo- or video-based asset creation. It even has its own mobile app monetization platform with Unity Ads.

Godot
Released under the MIT license, Godot is a free and open-source game creation tool that enables you to publish 2D and 3D games to all the popular mobile platforms. You can write your programs either with its default scripting language called GDScript or in the C++ language. It also has a nice visual editor with an uncluttered UI. What's really interesting is that it supports live editing on mobile devices too.
libGDX
libGDX is a game engine with multiple publishing targets including Android and iOS. It's released under the Apache 2.0 license and maintained by an active community of talented developers. It also comes with a large collection of books and tutorials, so that it's really easy for you to get started and continue.
2.2 Computer Vision SDKs
Computer vision has made remarkable progress since its early days of conception. Now it's become such a commodity that there are thousands of apps that use some form of computer vision. The availability of the built-in camera has made computer vision-based mobile apps a widespread type of software.
IBM Watson
IBM Watson is a cloud-based suite of machine-learning tools. With its Visual Recognition service, detecting and analyzing images from a smartphone app is actually quite easy. Check out some of our Watson tutorials here on Envato Tuts+. You can even use it to guess a person's age and gender from a photograph.

OpenCV
OpenCV was one of the early adopters of computer vision technology, and today it's one of the leaders in the field. There are several other projects, some open source, and other commercial ones, based on OpenCV. It's available for Android, iOS, and Windows platforms. In Android, you'll need Android NDK to use it.
OpenCV itself is written in C++, and you'll need to brush up your C++ skills if you intend to write programs using the SDK. You'll be able to add a wide range of computer vision based features to your app using OpenCV. They include face recognition, eye tracking and gaze estimation, object recognition, and a lot more related to both still images and videos. OpenCV is released under the BSD license and is completely free to use.
Qualcomm FastCV
Released by Qualcomm Technologies Inc., FastCV is another popular computer vision based SDK. It supports features like gesture recognition, face detection, tracking, and text recognition. Although FastCV can perform reasonably well on most ARM-based processors, it's specifically designed for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. A high-end processor is needed to fully utilize FastCV's capabilities.
2.3 Augmented Reality (AR) SDKs
AR is slowly gaining traction and becoming more of a day-to-day mobile experience, thanks to some state-of-the-art SDKs and enthusiastic developer communities. Here are some of the leaders and trendsetters in the industry.
Vuforia
Vuforia is a widely used mobile AR platform that can support a broad range of Android, iOS, and Windows smartphones and tablets. It helps you create memorable AR experiences in mobile apps, so that those apps can stand out from the rest.
Vuforia can cater to a variety of AR use cases such as print media and magazines, toys and consumer products, boxes and product packaging, and even bottles and cans. It also supports object recognition and object tracking and enables developers to create AR and VR apps by using its Mixed Reality API. You can choose from four available pricing plans depending on your requirements.
Mobile Development

Tin Megali
Wikitude
Another serious player in the field, Wikitude combines mobile geo-location with other standard AR features. So it must be another essential tool for any aspiring developer who wants to produce really cool mobile AR apps. The SDK comes with different options for licensing, such as a one-time fee and yearly subscription-based models.
Wikitude can currently deploy to Android and iOS mobile targets. Its community is also full of seasoned developers who are ready to share their knowledge, and hence you could take a shortcut to accelerate your development efforts to full speed.
Tango
Tango is an AR SDK developed by Google. It currently supports only two specific device models, namely Asus ZenFone AR and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. So, if you are interested in specifically developing for any of those devices, Tango is worth considering.
ARKit
ARKit is the AR platform of Apple. You'll need to get Xcode 9, in which ARKit is included as part of the iOS 11 SDK. So, if you don't want to mess up with third-party tools and prefer to focus only on official Apple tools, ARKit is ideal for you.
Stay tuned to Envato Tuts+ for courses and tutorials about ARKit!
3. Hybrid Development Tools
Some novice developers are intimidated by the steep learning curve normally associated with native mobile development platforms. They might have to learn new programming languages and acquire platform-specific development skills, such as mastering the testing tools.
Hybrid development tools address this issue in a clever manner. They enable developers with web development skills to develop mobile apps—without needing platform-specific knowledge. There are many such platforms available, but we'll focus only on a few popular ones.
React Native
React Native is a mobile development platform released by Facebook. It allows developers to publish native mobile apps using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You can maintain a single code base and publish your app on the Android or iOS platforms.
It's wonderful since you don't have to install Android Studio or Xcode on your development machine. And the real fun begins when you switch to native code within the React Native code editor itself. You can mix code snippets from several native platforms in the same code editor, and that makes you really powerful and versatile.
React

Ionic
Ionic is another framework that lets you build mobile apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It comes out of the gate with a library of UI components and lots of handy utilities that let you code beautiful mobile apps. Ionic is built on top of the very popular Angular framework, so if you have experience with Angular, you'll find Ionic a snap.

NativeScript
NativeScript is another framework for building cross-platform mobile apps. Like Ionic and React Native, it allows you to use CSS and JavaScript to build mobile apps, but instead of HTML you code your app layouts in XML.
NativeScript can target Android, iOS, and even the Windows Universal Platform. Unlike Ionic, which uses Cordova's WebView for rendering the UI of the app, NativeScript uses the native platform's rendering engine, which means that it provides a truly native user experience.

Adobe PhoneGap
PhoneGap was one of the pioneers of HTML-based hybrid mobile development frameworks. Since being acquired by Adobe in 2011, it's just gotten better and better.
The quickest way to get started is to download the PhoneGap desktop app and dive into coding. You can emulate apps in your browser, and you can also perform live testing on connected devices, using the PhoneGap Developer Mobile App. It can serve all the three popular platforms: Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
If you encounter a problem while writing your app, there are thousands of posts and articles on the web that will help you fix the issues. PhoneGap has a thriving community of developers who are really knowledgeable and helpful.
Xamarin
Xamarin is another hybrid mobile development tool, but it's based on C#, instead of HTML. So, if you are coming from a Microsoft development background and want to develop cross-platform mobile apps, it's an ideal choice. You'll also need Visual Studio IDE when you develop mobile apps with Xamarin.
Conclusion
The availability of the right tools and the ability to use them correctly are the key success factors of mobile app development. So, when you plan to develop your next app, give these tools a try.

7 Famous White Feminists Im So Over
The Urban Dictionary
White Feminism is nowa popular term owing to the abundance of white celebs taking advantage of the movement to further their own interestand career, usually without extending female solidarity or tackling relevant social issues such as trans-womens rights, Hollywoods whitewashing, invisibility of the disabled, police brutality, cultural appropriation, or institutional racism.
( function() { var func = function() { var iframe_form = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-form-f888080ce156586622bf372d9e63212e-587edfdfcccbf'); var iframe = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-f888080ce156586622bf372d9e63212e-587edfdfcccbf'); if ( iframe_form && iframe ) { iframe_form.submit(); iframe.onload = function() { iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( { 'msg_type': 'poll_size', 'frame_id': 'wpcom-iframe-f888080ce156586622bf372d9e63212e-587edfdfcccbf' }, window.location.protocol + '//wpcomwidgets.com' ); } } // Autosize iframe var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) { var origin = document.createElement( 'a' ); origin.href = e.origin; // Verify message origin if ( 'wpcomwidgets.com' !== origin.host ) return; // Verify message is in a format we expect if ( 'object' !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type ) return; switch ( e.data.msg_type ) { case 'poll_size:response': var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id ); if ( iframe && '' === iframe.width ) iframe.width = '100%'; if ( iframe && '' === iframe.height ) iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height ); return; default: return; } } if ( 'function' === typeof window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'message', funcSizeResponse, false ); } else if ( 'function' === typeof window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onmessage', funcSizeResponse ); } } if (document.readyState === 'complete') { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ } else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( 'DOMContentLoaded', func, false ); } else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( 'onreadystatechange', func ); } } )();
While this type of feminism raises a certain level of awareness to SOME feminist issues, it is harmful in that it paints a negative picture of the overall movement and thusgives dumb, ignorant boys an excuse to create sexist memes so they can call anyone who gets offended as Do not misunderstand me, I do not blame White Feminism as the sole reason why people, especially on the internet, immediately reject the importance and essence of feminism (sad online gnomes who are super bored with their lives and are desperate to be edgy should be held accountable for their own short-sightedness). My point is I would be very unglad if young women were led to believe by their idols that womens rights, solidarity, and empowerment are purely about #squadgoals, #actlikeaman, and #fuckdiets.
Rebecca Vorick, Feminism 101: What Is White Feminism?
Whether as individuals or celebrities, I dont hate the women that I will listbelow, but I do loathe their rejection of intersectional feminism, their habit of whining towards critics, and their collective willfulinabilityto acknowledge andlearn from their white privileged ways.
So here I present to you the role models for White Feminism and why they hella suck:
The Holy Trinity
1. Amy Schumer
Meghan Demaria
The first time I discovered Amy was from her movie after it got rave reviews from critics despite her character being obnoxiousas hell. Hollywood was abuzz with this funny, feminist, body-positive woman. Then I came across this article on her racist antics specifically about her controversial video parody of Beyoncs pro-black . I googled more and found out shes said a ton of racially insensitive things such as that time she joked Mexican men are rapists;or when she was bummed because no lesbians hit on her at a lesbian bar (was she thinking or what?); or when she implied men of color cat-call women more than white men do.
– If your career is built at the expense of minorities whom you mock and dehumanize, then your comedy is probably lazy, gross, and stale tbh. To quote Nathan Robinson but Amys jokes, as the Guardian explains,
If people pointout repeatedly you are racist and you can only respond along the lines of MAYBE you should self-reflectand make an effort to see WHY youre constantly criticized for your tasteless words instead of issuing another hollow Amys PR apologies, like many forced White Feminist apologies, count for nothing until she stops making feebleminded jokes that cater exclusively to a white American audience. Contrary to what Amy has claimed, she doesnt take responsibility for her words and doesnt use criticism against her in order to evolve as an artist and person. Instead she firmly stands her ground, proceeds to produce the same tired material, and shouts
TLDR, Amy, making and being slightly chubby does not a feminist make. No volume of laughter can drown out the fact youre a racist.
2. Lena Dunham
Lena, Lena, Lena. Oh, god, where do I begin?
Rebecca Carroll
If White Feminism were a video game, Lena Dunham would be that aggravating, seemingly unbeatable self-entitled boss villain at the end of the game that suddenly comes alive after you defeat it, cackling at you as it escapes into Video Game Part 2. Without her, the other mini-bosses might not have been enabled. She is the head of the White Feminist hydra whose foot-in-the-mouth diseasereaches far and wide.
"White Feminism" BINGO card. I have experienced ALL of these. Ugh. (From feministbingocards on Tumblr) http://pic.twitter.com/rUo4JubVeO
— Trudy (@thetrudz) February 6, 2015
Which brings me to why shes tied with Amy and why she is THE poster child for White Feminism (I only placed Amy first because I personally find her more unbearable). Because Lena, Amy, and friends are praised as feminist heroines, they and their careers get away virtually unscathed ifthey carelessly make racist, homophobic, or transphobic remarks. While Amy is guilty of proudly creating insipid humor, Lenas affronts are more unsettling.
Shes incredibly narcissistic as shown when she ranted (as in seriously, as in not a joke) about being offended by a black man not flirting with her and when she confessed shed never had an abortion but wished she had one (gurl, there are other ways to drawawareness on an issue without making it about yourself); her tv show supposedly represents feminism but only casts white girls and downplays sexual assault;she repeatedly objectifies black male bodies;she stated unbelievably ignorant gibberish about India and penned a sexist essay on Japan;she tweeted a racist joke about Asians; her view towards Rihannas abusive relationshipis perplexing; she doesnt acknowledge her success was heavily influenced by her wealthy familys connections; and she may have outed her sister to their parents without consent.
Theres also the questionable incident with said sister that Lena wrote of in her book I mean kids do weird crap and girls should be allowed to discover and explore their bodies and do naive stuff, but IDK what to sayabout this one so Ill just quote this anonymous comment on Jezebels article:
And this one by redditor scdi:
Plus this one by Victoria Brownworth:
While Im all for women being shameless in their self-love, theres nothing really new or groundbreaking with Lenas capitalist-centric feminism. Her work has indisputably raisedthe spotlight on important womens issues such as abortion and sexual autonomy, but is that enough given the harm shes done to feminism, to people of color, to LGBTQ+? She invites women to support her and her show because girl power, but hasnt bothered to address intersectionality and diversity, much less internalize any negative comments towards her regarding the above-mentioned stunts.
Lena Dunhams feminism is tone deaf. Theres nothing empowering about a classist, rich, privileged white girl who, like her counterpart Amy, contributes nothing profound or of actual substance for womens issues and is averse to improving her advocacy. I just I cant anymore. Lena, please ssssh.
If youre like me and youre done with Lena DONEham, check out some of the silly things shes saidhere.
3. Taylor Swift
My problematic fave! Who knew she was trouble when she walked in? T-Swizzles damsel-in-distress feminism may not be as toxic as Lena Dunhams, but its still clear as dishwater.
Taylor primarily rose as a status symbol for geeky shy girls, but even then people were already dissing Americas sweetheart. Somewhere along the way it became uncool to hate on Tay-Tay (whether legitimately or not), especially after Kanye stole her moment during the 2009 VMA.
Alas, regardless how polished and sweet your public persona is, if theres dirtunder all that sugar itll inevitably seep through bit by bit.Besides, any person who learns his/her feminism from Lena Dunham should not be trusted.
Ill sayTaylor is a hypocrite. Once upon a time she asserted she was not a feminist until one day she realized feminism is prettyradand helps her brandas an artist(plus it can be handy to dismiss your critics as). Of course its perfectly fine to change your opinion as you mature and learn from your initially confused view of feminism, but weve yet to see Taylor own up her missteps and strive for change.
She built an empire by portraying an angelic female whose biggest enemy is the sexualother female who steals her mans attention, and she exemplified this when she shit on Camille Belles career because Camille dated Taylors ex. She called her clique of BFFs to film a music video to drag Katy Perry after a feud. She accused Nicki Minaj of thereby overshadowingNickis discussion on her legitimate struggles as a black female artist and yet its Taylors character thats being assassinated? K.
Additionally, Taylor seems to be unaware of her privilege as a white woman; she culturally appropriates POC and uses them as props in her videos; her #squad is not inclusive; and her latest drama with Kanye contributes to the stereotypeof the angry black man vsthe innocent, faultless white woman. She also contendsthat if you are female and you do not support her, then there is aspecial place in hellfor you. Her self-serving feminism needs work because her white privilege is showing (and probably stressing out her PR team) and her constantly being marketed as a modern feminist despite her problematic-ness may detrimentally impact her young, impressionable fans.
For more examples of Taylor Swifts misguided feminism, I compiled a page of quotes on Quote Catalog which you can view by clicking here.
Honorable Mentions
4. Tina Fey
Jamie Peck
Tina, while undoubtedly very talented and funny, has stated in a 2009 Vanity Fair interview that (after her husband visited a strip club) she disapproves of strippers because “we need to be better than that”.Meanwhile she has no qualms about slamming sex workers as the punch line to her jokes. Self-worth does not equate to modesty, Tina!
Besides these, shewas complicit in a cast members terminationfrombecausethe actresswas not conventionally attractive. Then there was that episode from her other show that bordered on racist and the other one that parodied a famous doctors appearance which may or may not haveaddedto the doctors depression.
Ill sum this up with a post from blacklamb:
( function() { var func = function() { var iframe_form = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-form-d451b592a8eb5fd92ed36a345e6ec115-587edfdfcceb4'); var iframe = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-d451b592a8eb5fd92ed36a345e6ec115-587edfdfcceb4'); if ( iframe_form && iframe ) { iframe_form.submit(); iframe.onload = function() { iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( { 'msg_type': 'poll_size', 'frame_id': 'wpcom-iframe-d451b592a8eb5fd92ed36a345e6ec115-587edfdfcceb4' }, window.location.protocol + '//wpcomwidgets.com' ); } } // Autosize iframe var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) { var origin = document.createElement( 'a' ); origin.href = e.origin; // Verify message origin if ( 'wpcomwidgets.com' !== origin.host ) return; // Verify message is in a format we expect if ( 'object' !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type ) return; switch ( e.data.msg_type ) { case 'poll_size:response': var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id ); if ( iframe && '' === iframe.width ) iframe.width = '100%'; if ( iframe && '' === iframe.height ) iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height ); return; default: return; } } if ( 'function' === typeof window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'message', funcSizeResponse, false ); } else if ( 'function' === typeof window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onmessage', funcSizeResponse ); } } if (document.readyState === 'complete') { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ } else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( 'DOMContentLoaded', func, false ); } else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( 'onreadystatechange', func ); } } )();
5. Jennifer Lawrence
Ugh.
I wouldnt have included J. Law here but thenshe wrote that patronizing open letter about the US Presidential elections expressing that loving your neighbors was the answer to ending racial violence.
While were here, Ill point out she says a lot of dumb shitbelievingshes being quirky (like that time she roasted a foreign reporter for using his phones translator) when shes actually being an asshole. Recently she alsodesecrated and destroyed a sacred Hawaiian relic by scratching her butt on it because, again, she thought it was funny even after guides specifically asked herNOT to touch said relics. Ha. Ha. Ha. I guess?
Hopefully Hollywood realizes feminism isnt mainly about women eating pizzaandnot being a size zero.
6. Miley Cyrus
White Feminism, whats good?
Like every other proper White Feminist, Miley Cyrus uses the movement for her own agenda, exploits people of color, and remains mum on important topics such as Black Lives Matter. She is kind of an expert in perpetuating misogynoir and appropriating black culture. Like shes so good at profiting from black people and reformulating black culture into her own style (then whitesplaining about it) that Nicki Minaj called her out on the 2015 VMA stage.
( function() { var func = function() { var iframe_form = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-form-e9620ad68bb3811c6aeb243d3522183b-587edfdfcd06d'); var iframe = document.getElementById('wpcom-iframe-e9620ad68bb3811c6aeb243d3522183b-587edfdfcd06d'); if ( iframe_form && iframe ) { iframe_form.submit(); iframe.onload = function() { iframe.contentWindow.postMessage( { 'msg_type': 'poll_size', 'frame_id': 'wpcom-iframe-e9620ad68bb3811c6aeb243d3522183b-587edfdfcd06d' }, window.location.protocol + '//wpcomwidgets.com' ); } } // Autosize iframe var funcSizeResponse = function( e ) { var origin = document.createElement( 'a' ); origin.href = e.origin; // Verify message origin if ( 'wpcomwidgets.com' !== origin.host ) return; // Verify message is in a format we expect if ( 'object' !== typeof e.data || undefined === e.data.msg_type ) return; switch ( e.data.msg_type ) { case 'poll_size:response': var iframe = document.getElementById( e.data._request.frame_id ); if ( iframe && '' === iframe.width ) iframe.width = '100%'; if ( iframe && '' === iframe.height ) iframe.height = parseInt( e.data.height ); return; default: return; } } if ( 'function' === typeof window.addEventListener ) { window.addEventListener( 'message', funcSizeResponse, false ); } else if ( 'function' === typeof window.attachEvent ) { window.attachEvent( 'onmessage', funcSizeResponse ); } } if (document.readyState === 'complete') { func.apply(); /* compat for infinite scroll */ } else if ( document.addEventListener ) { document.addEventListener( 'DOMContentLoaded', func, false ); } else if ( document.attachEvent ) { document.attachEvent( 'onreadystatechange', func ); } } )();
Thankfully, Mileys antics seems to have simmered down recently. Lets hope other White Feministstake heed.
7. Meryl Streep / Caitlyn Jenner / Tilda Swinton
This last one was confusing. Thereare just too many White Feminists to choose from! So I mergedthree instead.
Remember that time Meryl Streep erased black peoples struggles by saying or when Caitlyn Jenner (as important as her visibility is) transitioned butdenied that same right forother trans-people?; or when Tilda Swinton broke my GOT-fan-girl heart by playing the asian-friend card with Margaret Choto make herself feel better about accepting a role as a whitewashed character?
Hollywood is flocking with White Feminists who range from annoying to problematic to downright toxic. As much as Western Media tries to shove them down my throat as exceptional feminist figures, they do not successfully represent my generation, my gender or genders issues, or my feminism.
Alternatives?
If you want some examples of non-White Feminists, see: Zendaya, Angela Davis, Ariana Grande, Laverne Cox, Mia Mingus, bell hooks, Malala Yousafzai, Matt McGorry (yes, males can be good feminists, too),Amandla Stenberg, Carrie Fisher, etc.
Some of you may complain but pleaseread the sources. I encourage everyone, especially dissenters, to first click the links above if you have questions regarding the incidents, people, or statements written. The thought pieces/web pages the links lead to will likely be able to address your queries and offer more context and in-depth analysis regarding specific issues.
We need to become responsible for actively educating ourselves rather thanjeering should a feminist raise a concern. On the other hand, although its easy to call out White Feminists and leave it at that, this by itself will not help advance the feminist movement or strengthen solidarity. So if you spot a White Feminist, do not just call them out – call them in, too. Encourageothers to practiceintersectionalityand inclusiveness just in case they have not been schooled on the broader philosophies of feminism.
Last notes: critiquing White Feminist celebs does not diminish whatever kindnessthese ladies have done for othersor commendable work theyve accomplished in their fields or in charities (such as Meryls inspirational Golden Globes speech or Taylors altruism for her fans). You can simultaneously be a good celebrity and generous person, and still be a White Feminist.
Iacknowledge the celebrities mentioned may have already offered apologies or addressed certain matters.Thats fine– everybodys activism is messy or imperfect, and it is understandable that a public figures learning process can be more challenging. As long as one isvisibly trying to make an effort to do better it should be okay. Unfortunately most of the people I mentioned dont seem to care much.
Having well-meaning intentions that falter in execution is simply not good enough anymore.
