Yknow what? I appreciate the LOA cast for making the Krew be on the older side, rather than their early-mid 20s. Even Frost, who is the youngest of the group, is in his 30s (that’s the vibe I’m getting, anyway). It actually adds a lot to their characters, I feel.

Like, Gricko being childish and generally good (morally, anyway)? That’s not because he’s young and haven’t experienced the harshness of the world, but because that’s just who he is. It’s not like he’s childish (for lack of a better term) because he didn’t have a good childhood, that’s just his personality. He knows the world is cruel, and tries to be a good person regardless of how badly he’s been burned.

Torbek isn’t emotional and naive because he’s young. He’s naive (again, lack of a better word? because he sees the best in even the cruelest monster. He’s emotional because of the cruel hand that life has given him, as well as the mere fact that he’s anxious and gets overwhelmed easily (saying this as someone with anxiety and gets weepy when overwhelmed). Like Gricko, Torbek knows how cruel life can be—he’s experienced it firsthand, and the canisters on his back are evidence enough of the trauma he’s endured—and YET. And yet he chooses to be kind, chooses to believe that others can be kind to him, no matter how cruel they may be.

Kremy and Gideon are obviously the most world-weary, and have definitely gotten crueler as the years go by. They are the opposite of the goblinoids in this regard—they saw the hand that life dealt them, and decided to give back what they got. Not that they’re incapable of kindness and trust (after all, kindness and trust is what let Kremy and Gid become what they are now), but it’s…harder, for them. Kremy grew up in the slums, and learned that the only way you can get what you want is to step on the people in your way. Gideon was tortured for years, and learned that the only way to get out of a bad situation is to fight your way through. They see Gricko and Torbek as weak because they’re kind, until it’s that very kindness that lets them proceed onto their quest (like Gricko with Juniper the Owlbear and Torbek with Pincushion)

Frost, we see grow crueler as the campaign goes on, as he learns that life isn’t fair. That people can be cruel. That sometimes, mercy isn’t the right choice. Talking can’t get you out of a fight. (But cruelty isn’t the right choice either. And you shouldn’t bite before the other can bark)
