listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.

like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

in the nicest and most non-confrontational way possible. i feel like some of you think that anything that isn't directly openly spelled out for you within a story is "missed potential" or "unexplored." like. sometimes there are implied narratives. sometimes the point is that you as the reader are supposed to think and draw your own conclusions and participate in the story. the writers not directly spelling every little detail out for you doesn't mean that the story is poorly written or missed its own plot details somehow. PLEASE.

i love the idea of ford and stan healing when they’re on the sea together. i need it. SO BAD. i keep thinking about how one of the last entries ford wrote in his journal was talking about how he wants to repair their relationship and finally make it up to him. if stan gives him a chance.

and stan… oh my god he’s desperate for that!! are you kidding me!! i know to ford it must feel like stan has always held a grudge against him since he came back, and because he feels so unworthy now that he’s come to terms with how he failed the people he loves, it skews his perception of what stan really wants. what he doesn’t realize in doubting whether or not stan also wants to repair their relationship is that stan has yearned for this for his ENTIRE. LIFE. he’s wanted to go back to being what they were to each other as kids from the moment he was kicked out to the moment he remembered who ford was after weirdmageddon. of COURSE he says yes to sailing the world with him. of COURSE he’ll wait as long as it takes to have his brother back, he worked thirty years for this!!

and now it’s just a matter of being there for each other. because neither of them were able to be there in each other’s worst moments. as stan regains memories ford can’t help him reach, he starts realizing just how damaged he became in the time he was homeless. and i’m sure ford’s trauma from bill shows up in ways neither of them expect either! and it must be so healing for them to be each other’s support in the aftermath of their suffering. it must feel like regaining a limb, to have your twin brother back, your best friend. ugh it just kills me.

by the way if ya’ll are looking for fics with this premise of the two of them healing… i highly recommend any gravity falls fics by ao3 user parsnipit. perfect ratio of hurt to comfort. and they’re all about stan and ford. i think about these fics every day no joke someone save me
