Taehyung’s POV

I lead Jin into the kitchen, leaning against the counter as I nibble on my bottom lip.

“She must have had an abusive owner. I asked about her neck and she brushed it off as a fall. There was a really steep hill beside where I found her so I assume that’s what she fell off of, but when I mentioned it looked like handprints she kinda ignored it. I asked if she had an abusive owner and she broke down.” I ramble, pursing my lips as I look at Jin with an apologetic look.

He nods, leaning against the kitchen table, drumming his fingers against it. “At least you found her. What if she’d stayed out there and that person found her again?” Jin mumbles.

I nod, thank god I did. “While she stays here I’ll look at her wounds, make sure she’s healing well.” Jin says, pushing himself off of the table. “I wanna know what they did to her. I don’t know if I really buy that all of her injuries are from the fall.” I say, pulling myself up to sit on the counter.

“I wanna know too. She was pretty beat up. Something’s up with her left leg too, it looks more swollen today than it did last night.” Jin says, returning to the task of making you food.

I hum, watching him move around the fluffy eggs in the pan. “How long do you think she’ll stay?” I ask, looking up at Jin who shrugs. “Depends. Her wounds could heal in a week, a month, 2 days, we never know. Besides, she may want to stay longer than just until her wounds heal, or leave when she’s mobile enough. We can’t know for sure, Tae.” I nod, leaning my head back against the wall.

“I just hope she’s okay.” I mumble, missing the glance Jin sends me. “Why are you so hung up on her anyway?” Jin asks, hip bumping my legs.

I sigh, “I don’t know, hyung. She just…she looked so beat up and it reminded me of Kook a bit. How battered and broken he was when we found him.” I mumble, frowning at the memories.

“Yeah..it was pretty bad. I get it.” I smile slightly at Jin’s words, running a hand over my face. “I’m gonna go back out there.” I say, hopping off the counter and giving Jin’s shoulder a pat as I pass by.

hey hey hey august can I hear the wasp story?

THE WASP STOR(IES)

i will begin with a small bit of context. my mom used to be fatally allergic to wasps, specifically yellowjackets. i can’t remember what it was exactly but she had something done to make her not allergic to them anymore, or at least barely allergic. my dad has adhd and he also has a pretty skewed sense of danger; he’s very impulsive and these things combined have resulted in some... interesting... things.

THE FIRST (major) WASP STORY, aka my dad makes questionable decisions: part one

i can’t remember whether this was before or after The Wasp Incident but i believe it was before. at this point in time my youngest sister, squid, was probably four or five and EXTREMELY afraid of wasps because of something that happened when she was 2. at our old house, during the summer she wouldn’t go downstairs because wasps lived in our air conditioning and they’d get blown out into the main room down there. anyways. the rest of us didn’t like wasps either.

except, of course, my dad. my dad was and is not afraid of wasps.

outside my parents’ window was a massive wasp nest. one of the bowling- or basket-ball sized ones. mostly they didn’t bother us. my dad once stuck his hand in the nest just for funsies and only got stung like. 3 or 4 times. so. not too aggressive.

my dad, on this day, was leaf blowing our concrete patio. and the window was RIGHT there.

he wondered, what would happen if i stuck the leaf blower in here and turned it on?

so. he did.

we couldn’t leave the house for a day and a half. but the wasp nest was gone, at least, i guess.

THE SECOND (major) WASP STORY, aka my dad makes questionable decisions part two

this was maybe a year ago (so after The Incident). now there’s a kind of hornets called bald faced hornets. we were already familiar with them from The Incident. they’re mostly okay, because they won’t attack until you’re near their home (usually in a tree). but once they do, their venom is particularly painful. (unrelated but every year they’d eat any apples that fell to the ground and they’d get drunk cause the apples were a little fermented. it’s really funny.)

so in our cherry trees was a big wasp nest. we, of course, wanted to eat the cherries but me and my sisters were willing to just. not go near the tree; that particular tree did not in fact grow any cherries. my dad, being unafraid and bored, decided to find a way to get rid of it.

his original plan was to ‘just stomp on it.’ don’t ask me how that would work because i simply don’t know. he didn’t either. that was the end of the plan. notable problems include the fact that it was in a tree and the fact that it was full of wasps.

anyways. my mom told him that was not actually a good plan but tragically couldn’t convince him to just. leave it alone. the revised plan was to 1. go up a ladder to the nest. 2. cut it down with a... knife? saw? i don’t remember. 3. drop the whole nest + the branch into a bucket and finally, 4. shove a lid on the bucket real fast.

he didn’t even make it to step 2.

me and my sisters were outside, a fair bit away, watching. we knew it was going to be terrible and hilarious. and it was! i actually have the whole thing on video, somewhere; if i can find it and it doesn’t have anyone’s faces on it then i might post it here.

so here’s my dad, standing on a wobbly ladder which is right next to a very steep hill (our yard was essentially a downhill, a few feet of flat ground, and another downhill. good for sledding though). on the ground beneath him, the wasp bucket, and in his hand a dull serrated knife.

being who he was he decided to take a look at the wasps and stuck his hand right next to them. ‘oh,’ i hear him say. ‘these guys are aggressive.’

‘oh, they’re really aggressive.’ he drops the knife. the wasps come out.

we (me and my sisters) start running. behind us, my dad is yelling for us to get inside quickly and close the door because the wasps are CHASING him.

well. we couldn’t go outside that evening, but in the end the only consequence was my dad was in a lot of pain and had like, a fever and stuff from the venom (surprise surprise! they were bald faced hornets), and my cat acted drunk cause she got stung too.

pretty big consequence, let’s be real. i think my dad must feel pain less than other people, because... well. we all have learned th hard way how much bald faced hornets stings hurt.

THE WASP INCIDENT, aka a bizarre series of increasingly terrible misfortunes

the day of The Incident was perfectly normal. we went to a river with some friends, which was fun if a bit cold. i don’t remember the time spent at the river.

soon it came time to leave. we had planned on taking a picture together, but well, too bad. we would go home without it. oh, how i wish we would have gone home without it.

my sister, as mentioned before, was terrified of wasps. and there were a few wasps hanging around; we were near water, no big deal. if she saw one she’d scream, though.

into the woods we went, trying to find a place to take a picture (we stayed on the trail, though; there were some very little kids with us).

i clearly remember the moments before Disaster Struck. a 10 year old me found a beautiful flower. some cool mushrooms.

‘oh, here’s a good place for a picture,’ i hear behind me. the parents stood on the trail, while all the kids stood on a slope directly next to it. there was a nice log adding to the picture, it was very aesthetic, i’m sure.

suddenly, squid starts screaming. no big deal, she is five and screams a lot. she just saw a wasp, probably, or maybe hadden pinched her.

there was a little pinch on my leg. stinging nettle? maybe.

another. these hurt too bad to be stinging nettle. i didn’t know what was going on but we all ran down the slope faster than we’d ever run before.

i was feeling terrible pricks all over my body. please understand these were truly terrible. they were enough to bring me to tears with just one sting.

as everybody ran down the trail towards the cars and, presumably, safety, my mom ripped my shirt off for me because THERE WAS A WASP STUCK INSIDE MY SHIRT. once i got it out i understood what was going on - we were being attacked by wasps. everyone else was out of sight, around a bend in the trail, but i could hear their distant screams as i walked slowly and leisurely down the trail, in intense pain. i thought the trees were very pretty, and the sky very blue.

when i got to the parking lot i was met with the sight of my youngest sister, no pants or shirt on, crying hysterically and my friend doing the same. poor squid, five years old and deathly afraid of wasps, had been stung over 12 times by some of the wasps that personally i have found to be most painful. they’d gotten in her clothes.

the end of the story, right? you’re probably thinking. we go home, squid is even more scared of wasps, that’s it.

well, not quite. remember how i mentioned my mom used to be allergic to wasps? specifically, yellowjackets? and only yellowjackets?

as it turns out, bald faced hornets ARE yellowjackets. and in saving my sister from the wasps stuck in her clothes my mom had been stung six. times.

so. here we are. four parents, at least three crying children, in the middle of the woods 2 hours from civilization and, more importantly a HOSPITAL. someone camping nearby had benadryl but no one had an epi pen, and my mom was having an allergic reaction. she wasn’t going into anaphylactic shock, luckily.

but she still needed an epi pen, because she could.

just down the road was a boy scout camp, and for the first time we had good luck - there were people there. and a medical tent. we took her in, they were confused but they gave her an epi pen. i sat in the car with my friend, who was still crying. she gave me licorice. after an hour or so, my mom was fine. and we went home.

in the end everything was okay, and i have a fun story to tell. also happy to report that squid’s fear of wasps isn’t as severe these days, shes 10 now.

anyways. here are three of the reasons im not fond of wasps, and three of my favourite stories to tell friends (sorry to my irl friends who’ve heard this story SO. many times.)

aesthetics: singeing a hole in your fishnets with the cherry of a menthol, spitting a pistachio behind the bar just to hear it ping off the nozzle top bottles, lemon in a fresh cut, a war torn poppy standing alone in an empty field, pressing thumbs to yellow bruises, stomping over flowerbeds when there’s a path right besides it, dangling over ledges just to feel your chest jolt, a snarling rottweiler that needs muzzling, limp feet poking out behind a door, ‘I PROMISE I DON’T BITE’ scrawled on a name tag, slapping a bald head in front of you at the cinema like it’s a bongo, not owning a single jacket that isn’t stolen, driving a stranger’s car down the wrong lane against the screaming traffic, hair more feral than a wolf cub and eyes smudgier than a coal mine.  

BACKGROUND:

ok SO. her father owns a strip club in crescent hill named no angels. it’s kind of.... a seedy establishment i won’t lie. hs a red glowing sign like it’s lighting up a window in amsterdam. cigarette butts floating in oil slick puddles outside. unsavoury characters crawling all over like rats in a sewer. despite this it’s a legitimate business on the surface of things n it does pretty well in trade. it’s like.... that place people warn u NOT to have ur bachelor party at unless u fancy urself the type tht willingly enters a lion’s den bt tht almost??? adds to the allure in a way??? ppl r like wow so sketchy it’s the thrill of a lifetime........ i mean run while u still can bt go off i guess

it isn’t Confirmed Public Knowledge bt it’s pretty heavily implied thru the rumour mill that bradley’s father is the head of a gang of rly............ Not Nice people. all the ppl that work for him u would hands down NOT want to run into in a dark alley. while things seem legitimate on the suface it’s pretty clear they’re into shady dealings n the townsfolk that suspect that would indeed b correct! the club’s a front for a drug business n they’re also washing n running counterfeit cash thru it. they probably also have their hands dipped into a few other local businesses to run their cash thru these too n keep it all seemingly by the books so nobody comes sniffing around. they even r friends with a member of local law enforcement that’s working w them for a cut so they honestly have all bases covered to keep things airtight n foolproof. perhaps a business in reed too which bradley oversees bt i haven’t given this Too Much thought as of yet??

so ya she’s grown up fairly local most of her life n would maybe be known around town as such.................. the milligans r certainly Interesting as far as families go so like. it honestly wldn’t surprise me if ppl nudge elbows when they see one of them coming n immediately walk in the opposite direction. just quite an intimidating presence...... they’re like caged animals where ur specifically instructed NOT to stick ur fingers between the bars bc they WILL bite

on a more personal note her dad is pretty much the worst human being alive n bradley hs like….. a lot of issues with herself as a result of years of toxicity n abuse

in terms of more family bkground info her mum’s name was alyssa n she vanished when bradley was 12. jst like…. into thin air. nothing. no note. zilch. gan! n when bradley asked her dad abt it his response was essentially “guess she didn’t love us enough to stay”. as bradley’s got older tho n become (without intention) more involved in the business side of things, it’s become pretty clear there was far more to the story.

(abuse tw) they had a horrible marriage n tony ws emotionally manipulative at the best of times, violent at worst, which didn’t help the fact tht alyssa ws struggling a lot w severe depression n rly just… not in the mindset to b dealing w anything else, even where motherhood ws concerned. bradley p much… would look after her a lot n they’d both b scared of her dad n it was just a whole unhealthy mess.

(death implied tw) anyway im rambling bt basically tony (bradley’s dad) gt wind of alyssa sleeping w men tht worked fr him n he just… got rid. bradley’s kind of worked out over the yrs tht her mum didn’t jst leave on her own accord n tht something must hav happened to her bt she’s too scared of her dad to ever directly accuse him

when her mum went all of her dad’s cruelty pretty mch got channelled straight onto her. it ws diluted between two before bt as u can probably imagine her upbringing was jst…. a steep downhill decline

(drugs implied tw) she learnt ways 2 deal w the incurring trauma bt they weren’t healthy ones at all! bsically jst. will do or take anything fr the distraction. chases a thrill like it’s the only way to remind her she’s alive. has absolutely no regard fr her own wellbeing n often gets other ppl in trouble too bc she’s so insatiably reckless

(hospitalisation tw) she hd….2 separate stints of psychiatric hospitalisation n she never tlks abt it. like ever. acknowledging she’s been vulnerable is her worst nightmare n bc of the way her dad raised her she always thinks any sign of struggling within herself is weakness. truly does…. not kno how to properly emotion

CUT TO!!!! the present. she’s currently living at the motel which is like. the least homely place she cld ever live rly but bradley loves making her life uncomfortable n doesn’t rly believe in growing sentimentally attached to anything if she cn help it <3 probably gets into arguments all the time w her neighbours it’s a whole thing.... atrocious at feeding herself has breakfasts frm the vending machine like her organs aren’t screaming fr vegetables.... plays music too loud n sometimes vanishes for days at a time without a word. she’s a lot.

i honestly feel like the murders haven’t rly phased bradley too hugely....... i won’t lie she probably genuinely is like. oh maybe it’s smthn to do w my dad. n just blinks the other way not rly that phased. on some subconscious level i think she rly just thinks........ death follows her wherever she goes n is like. this is just life for me! kind of depressing. holds her hand bt then screams n pulls away when she inevitably bites me.

PERSONALITY:

the kind of sour cherry only certain people have a taste for

once drank a bottle of whiskey, insisted she could still do a cartwheel and accidentally kicked an old man’s front tooth out in the process. proceeded 2 collapse into a flower bed and laugh so much abt it that she cried

barely takes anything seriously 50% of the time and is angry the other 50%

if she was a coffee she’d be black with five grains of sugar that you couldn’t taste until the last sip

(alcoholism tw) high functioning alcoholic. if u ever see her w a coffee cup u jst kno tht one sniff will confirm high alcohol percentage. honestly idk hw she does it her liver must b yellin

loyal to a point of fault. if she cares abt u (rare) and u murder a man in cold blood (not so rare in the broad scheme of bradley’s life) she’ll brawl anyone that says ur guilty

honestly wld probably fight a person over anything. sometimes she’ll jst be having a bad day n she’ll burst n take it out on whoever says the wrong thing. minefield!

has the worst luck in romance…. ever. ALL her past bfs hav been absolute beasts n as a result she has the ‘romance is dead n love is a lie’ mentality. definitely NOT a romantic. very cut n dry abt these things. sex is mostly just sex n she’d kind of scoff at anyone that wanted more from her

mostly wears stolen clothes from strangers and jackets that swamp her. huge chunky stomping boots with steel toe caps that would RLY bruise if they gave u a kick. hair is p much always a wild mess n she usually hs kind of smudgy/smoky makeup bcos apparently she’s allergic to combs and generally looking presentable… relatable content. the only time she rly looks put together is when she has to do something/go somewhere/see someone on behalf of her father....... he kind of uses her as a sort of. honey pot sometimes fr shit his gang get up to it’s like. not! a way u should ever utilise ur daughter but :/ i cannot stress enough how much i wna drop kick him in the neck

she’s v sarcastic. blunt. kind of has a habit of…. assessing a person n she’s quite perceptive bc she’s been trained to b by the way she always has to monitor her dad’s expression fr the slightest emotion change. she’s very confident n can p much mke a conversation out of whatever if she feels like it. independent too like she hs a bunch of (predominantly surface connection) friends bt she doesn’t care abt going out places alone n does this often. she’s probably kind of known around town bt itd b a 50/50 balance between bein known as intimidating n bein known as that one girl tht always gets into anarchy

likes: drunken snow angels that drag on so long they flirt with pneumonia, stealing cars, throwing watermelons off rooftops to watch them explode, shooting pedestrian’s with bb guns from hidden spots on rooftops. 

dislikes: telling the truth, tulips so yellow it’s like they’re gloating, playing music loud enough to fry your brain and serve it on a piece of toast, going home.

PLOTS:

someone tht works at the ‘no angels’ strip club?? either as a dancer or bartender or whtever. just a forewarning it’s probably gna b a pretty….. seedy and Not That Pleasant environment bc it’s like. a crime hotspot inevitably bc it’s a gang hangout so. ur chara wld truly be in fr a rollercoaster ride to say the least

(drugs tw) she deals coke fr her dad’s gang so perhaps ur muse buys off her

anyone….. she’s brawled in the past like. she’s literally a menace i cnt express this enough. wil jst randomly throw a drink in someone’s face fr no reason bc she’s bored. she’s probably pissed off 1000 diff ppl in 1000 diff ways. the possibilities r endless n i jst think tht’s a sexy prospect!

mayb someone tht she met at an aa meeting when she hd to go fr a court mandated thing one time after bein arrested fr public indecency. i feel like there’s probably a rly expensive statue somewhere thts fancily sculpted n she like. did a flying kick n broke the dick of it off n gt arrested fr it

Harry jolted awake, sweat-soaked and teary-eyed, what in the hell was that? he shook his head, sitting up in his little cot and making his way out of his tent. it was too hot, he touched his side, it burned slightly, it felt like a beam of heat had hit him but….there was nothing there.

he breathed in the fresh air, admiring lush nature around him when a chapel-like building caught his eye.

“huh,” he muttered, turning towards it “wha’ is tha’?” he looked around, no one else was awake, so he grabbed his sword and hook before making his way toward the building.

he froze, hearing a snort, glancing to his left he saw a red pig-like creature, snoring away. he slowly moved forward, keeping quiet as possible.

he sighed as he made it to the entrance of the building, glancing at the decayed sign above the large doors.

Temple of Time 

“interesting name” harry muttered, pushing open the rotting doors and gasping.

high ceilings, broken chandeliers, and...a giant statue at the end of the temple, vines and flowers crawling up the stone.

harry whistled, spinning around as he looked at the obviously once beautiful temple.

“Beautiful isn’t it” harry yelped, drawing his sword and whirling around, seeing an old man with an odd Scottish/British accent at the entrance, looking up at the broken chandeliers.

“who are yeh?” harry muttered, keeping his sword drawn, and backing away from the old man.

“just someone who has been wandering on this desolate plateau for years, I believe your friend (y/n) mentioned me?” harry frowned, (y/n) did say she knew someone on here, from before she moved to Auradon.

“she did mention someone” harry muttered “but how could I know she meant you” the old man laughed, walking closer to him.

“well Harry, since im the only other person on this plateau, I would think it would be easy to connect the dots.” Harry groaned, sheathing his sword and crossing his arms.

“whatever….wait how do yeh know” he turned, but the old man was gone, “my name?”  Harry glanced at the ground, he had heard the old man’s footsteps yet...there were no footprints. harry could see his own leading to where he was standing and the old man had passed by him.

yet there was...nothing?

‘nope’ harry thought, sprinting out the door and back to the tents ‘fucking nope nope nope’

“(y/n)! wake up!” you yelped, sitting up rapidly, turning slightly to see harry kneeling next to your cot.

“harry” you let out a harsh whisper “what the fuck?”

“did the old man ever just randomly disappear?” you paused, looking at harry with a ‘are you crazy’ look.

“again, harry, what the fuck?” harry huffed, shaking his hands around nervously.

“look I went to tha’ temple ‘f time thingy and the old man snuck up on meh, and then he just disappeared! no footprints either, I just wanted ta ask yeh so I know im not crazy”

you sighed, drawing back into your memories of the plateau and the old man “he never disappeared randomly but...but he appeared randomly, because...when i would leave one place, he would appear 15 away in another place, and unless he had superspeed, it would be impossible for him to just...appear”

Harry sighed in relief, he wasn’t going crazy “alright so….what the fuck is goin’ on?”

“i” you brushed your hair out of your face “I don’t know Harry, I really don’t know”

ben was once more leading an exploration group, all of you walking up a steep hill, “wait” ben held his hand up, taking out his flashlight and pointing it toward a cave opening with….strange carvings surrounding the mouth?

harry gave a harsh squint, stepping forward and placing his hand on the loping and curving designs. “what is this?” he muttered, following uma as she stepped into the dark cave.

you sighed, stepping into the shrine, and staying in the back of the group, you swore you would never step foot in this thing again.

you had woken up here, remembering nothing but your own name, and age. littered with scars both long healed and newly healed.

the old man had told you it had been called the shrine of resurrection.

“woah look at this” Carlos gasped, running forward and running his hands along the edge of the healing pool. “its so ancient yet...so futuristic~” you smiled, Carlos was adorable.

harry swallowed harshly, a body was appearing in the pool, blood covered the ground...his hands...his jacket.

what the fuck.

he gave a wobbly breath, kneeling down next tot eh healing pool of the shrine, next...next to (y/n)s burned and mutilated body. 

her eyes were closed as if she was in a peaceful sleep.

“Please keep ‘er safe” he muttered, leaning over to kiss her forehead “please help ‘er, heal ‘er”

he shakily sighed as he backed away from her still body “come back to meh (y/n)”

Harry blinked widely as someone started to poke his arm.

“Harry?” he turned, there was (y/n) staring up at him with worried eyes “are you alright?” he shook his head.

“no...im really dizzy” he muttered, his legs felt like jelly, and his stomach was flipping. (y/n) frowned, grasping his arms and leading him to a wall, which he slid down and buried his head in his arms.

“just breath harry” you muttered, rubbing his back. Harry’s breath hitched, a sob ripping out of his throat.

so many feelings, gut-wrenching sadness and guilt, the painful echo of love.

the tiniest shine of hope.

harry couldn’t handle it, he stood, bolting out of the cave, collapsing as he reached the opening, he could breathe!!!

“Harry!” uma, Gil, and (y/n) rushed out behind him, (y/n) dropping to her knees next to him and helping him sit up to straighten his airways.

“harry you need to breathe” (y/n) pleaded, gripping his arm tightly hoping to ground him.

“harry focus on us” uma commanded, “look at me” Harry’s vision was going fuzzy, all the emotion from that….person...were flooding his mind, his chest, his SOUL.

“hook that is an order look at me” harry forced his eyes to dart over to uma, who grabbed his face and made him look into her eyes.

they were glowing, she placed her hands on his head, the glow extending out to her hands, calming his mind.

Harry let out a sob of relief, all the noise in his mind softening before dissipating completely. uma slowly removed her hands, resting them on his shoulders.

“better?” harry sniffed, nodding “better.” uma sighed, standing and helping (y/n) lift harry to his feet.

“let’s go back to the tents, I think he needs to cool down, from...whatever that was”

The Whomping Willow had always been your spot, a place where you could go, unbothered, even by the swinging branches themselves. To the amazement of other students, the tree didn't make an effort to throw you out of range when getting too close, you were even allowed to lean up against it.

When others came into the picture, attempting the same as you, they didn't have quite your luck. They were slapped around and pushed away, falling on their arses each time and you just watched from your place underneath it. It was said that you'd bewitched the Willow, forcing it to let you lie there almost every day, but the reality was you hadn't done a single thing. You weren't sure why it let you get so close while you worked on your homework, but it did.

You had figured it out accidentally, running around the grounds away from Lily as you held her newest love letter from James Potter. She was ready to throw it away without giving it a second thought, but you knew just how pure his intentions were, and believed he was right for her.

You were too busy laughing and looking behind you to notice where you were going, and paid no attention to Lily's screams telling you to stop, she'd been doing exactly so for the past two minutes but only jokingly. They were getting louder and less playful, and you didn't realize where you were until you tripped over the root of a tree.

Laughter had died out and you pushed yourself onto your hands and knees, you had dropped the letter below you. You turned your head looked up to see the Whomping Willow giving you what you could only describe as a menacing glare, or that's what you had interpreted it's details as, as fear took over your body and you froze.

It was quiet, as you waited for it to make a move to remove you from it's bark. It's branches waved back and forth in the air as the wind shoved past, pushing your hair out of your face. You took small and slow movements as you stood, holding the letter again. You didn't break the contact your eyes held with the branches.

Lily still stood a safe distance away, one hand reaching beneath her robes and gripping her wand for precaution. She took one step towards the tree, and after her second step the air became stiff. The branches had their own control and stopped swaying peacefully, and stood straight mimicking the hairs on the back of your neck.

She hesitated, but stepped again. One branch swung down and pushed her aside, not too harshly but enough to knock her down with a groan.

"Lily!" You called, watching as the wood retracted to it's usual place. You ran forward without care if the Willow was going to hit you or not.

At her side, you asked if she was okay. However, it was as if the world had gone entirely mute and she had forgotten about you as she just stared into the hole of the Willow tree.

You followed her gaze, shaking your head and extending your hand as you stood to pull her up with you. "Let's not worry about it, Lily, we got lucky."

Lily shoved her wand back in her pocket. "Strange..."

After that incident you had taken it upon yourself to study the Whomping Willow, and much to your surprise you seemed to be the only one that could get so close. It had become your own little tradition to seek out the tree when you wanted to be alone, and never came a time where you weren't welcomed.

You sat on a particularly large root now, legs crossed out in front of you with your charms book resting on top, you used it's hard cover as a surface for the paper you scribbled on.

Boisterous laughter broke your train of thought and disrupted your writing, the letter you were writing became smudged by the sudden flinch in your hand mid stroke. You looked up and saw two boys, one Ravenclaw and a Hufflepuff jumping around and pushing each other as they arrived to the grass area.

"Oi! You looking to get slapped around? How'd you get up there?"

You glanced up with hooded eyes as you lifted your parchment and shoved it between two pages of your textbook. It was time to go, you had been compromised, and Potions would be starting soon.

It was your belief that you could only get so close because of intent, that's what the Whomping Willow saw in each student. It was magical after all, and you were sure that it wasn't only here to threaten student's lives, but protect them as well. It hadn't been your intent to hurt the tree when you ran towards it unknowingly, you didn't come to mock or prove your strength as a challenge with it, it was a mistake. The Willow must've seen that, or else you wouldn't be there.

"You think it broke?"

"A tree can't just break, you git."

A clock began to methodically chime and your eyes were drawn to the castle of a school. Lunch was over now and passing period was just beginning.

The boys began to turn around and walk, just as a branch extended and pushed the Ravenclaw down before retracting. It left a hint of a smile on your face as you collected your books thrown to the side and followed their trail to the school, listening to the Ravenclaw's complaints.

When reaching the school the two had turned down their own hall and you continued towards the dungeons, regretting not dropping off your charms book in your dorm before the class had started. It was feeling heavy and you were already late, you could tell as an owl squawked at you from the side of the hall and a sneer from an old painting.

Slipping through the wooden doors, the class turned and stared for a short time before realizing it was only you. Slughorn met your eyes but continued to teach his lesson at the front, prepping the class for their potions. You scanned the room quickly for an empty seat, to which you only found one at the front of the room next to Sirius Black.

He had been moved there from almost the second that first term started, too much noise was made in the back with his mates, Peter and James, and now they were all scattered throughout the room permanently. James was also in the first row, just on the complete opposite side, and Peter sat in the back.

You really had nothing against Sirius, but you didn't know what to expect when you slid into the stool next to him. He looked at you silently, eyes dropping down to your robes almost immediately. Making assumptions, you were sure. Not only because of your y/h colors, but from the small dirt stains from the tree and ground you had been up against a few minutes prior.

Slughorn's speech ended and you caught on to what he was saying, enough to know what precautions to take. You knew what to do with the help of your textbook, flipping to the right page slowly but surely as the other students grabbed their ingredients. Sirius stayed and scrubbed his cauldron without a word.

There was a tall figure shadowing you slightly, and you turned to see the disappointing expression on your Professor's face.

"This isn't the first time you've been late to my class, miss y/l/n," He chastised, "This calls for another detention."

"I know, Professor. See you on Friday," You gave him a thin-lipped smile. It annoyed him, his only response was a sigh and a shake of his head as he walked off.

Sirius raised an eyebrow as he set his scrub brush down on the table, "You know, if you stopped being so late, I reckon you could get out of these detentions."

You looked at him in slight disbelief, you really had expected him to ignore it, and now here he was giving you advice just to poke fun? "Pardon me?"

"Where do you run off to anyway?" He leaned forward, resting his head in the palm of his hand. "Shrieking Shack? Black Lake?"

What you had mistaken for arrogance was him trying to be funny, you realized, and it worked as you smiled and shook your head. "I would reckon so if I had gone mad. You realize none of this is your business, yeah?"

"I want it to be."

You rolled your eyes and stood up from your stool, off to grab the ingredients. "Only in your dreams, Black."

He continued to stare down the back of your head as you tucked glass jars in the space between your arms and your chest, clutching them. Until his head was pushed forward, he was so unprepared he almost hit the rim of the cauldron. He turned behind him to see Peter and James giggling as they rushed to their seats, and just as he rose from his seat with a determined and mischievous glare he was shot down.

"Mr. Black!"

The school hours had ended not long ago, and instead of books and quills in your possession, now all that you had was a letter stuffed in it's envelope. As you looked down at it, weaving it between your fingers, you realized just how bad your hands were shaking with nerves.

Your quest was to the Owlrey, the time it took to get there was tiring, especially with the steep path once you got to the rocky hill the tower was on. Trips were taken before and at first you had believed they would get easier, but they never did, the path only became memorized.

On your way you stepped past a pile of well-past brown leaves absentmindedly as you flipped over the letter and looked at it's dedication. The y/l/n's.

Behind you, you heard the crunch of fallen leaves and a few sticks tucked under the pile and you froze where you stood, looking behind you but you could see nothing past the curve on the spiral trail. Holding your breath, you could hear the sounds of heavy footsteps getting closer.

You slinked behind a boulder on the side of the hill, keeping your back pressed up against it as you waited for the student to pass. It was more than likely they didn't know you were here, either, and just on their way to deliver a letter of some sort. You remained curious, nevertheless.

Their steps became clearer and you waited, becoming more nervous than you knew you needed to be. A building anticipation as you began to pray to dear Merlin it wasn't Malfoy or Snape, but then you figured Malfoy was far too stuck up to get his hands dirty with a mere owl. He'd have one of his followers do the work for him, which was much less threatening.

A figure passed and for a second you swore it was Snape, first recognizing the long, jet black hair. But this student's was more free rather than slicked back and looking like it was glued to his head. Their hands were stuck in their pockets and they kept their eyes up, looking at the sky. You were able to catch their features, as well as the Gryffindor house colors on his tie.

An overdramatic, but playful sigh left your lips and your arms fell to your sides, "Are you serious?"

You surprised him, you could tell as he turned around and had his eyebrows pulled together in confusion for a short second, just before it turned into one of pride as a cheeky smirk took over, hoping you wouldn't notice that you caught him off guard. You knew you did.

"'Fraid so, darling. You waiting up for me?" Sirius cocked an eyebrow and walked down to where you were, still up against a rock. The steepness of the hill only made him taller than he already was, towering over you.

"More of catching my stalker," You corrected.

"You're hiding behind a boulder."

"You're following me up a mountain."

His mouth fell open as he failed to come up with a rebuttal to defend his actions, and it was your turn to smirk as you bumped your shoulder with his and continued on the trail. He was quick to turn around and follow your actions once again, slowing down when he reached your side.

Sirius kept his eyes on you, and then they fell to the letter in your hands that you kept on the opposite side of you, almost as if you were hiding it from him.

"Don't see why you're suddenly so curious to know of my whereabouts outside of class," You told him, enough courage filling your chest to ask such a question outright.

He cocked his head, "We've developed a rapport, wouldn't you say? Enough for me to feel free to irritate you as much as I please."

Scoffing, you shook your head and looked down at the yellowing grass. It was pushed down from all the times students, like yourself, had walked on it. At one point in time you had questioned why Hogwarts hadn't replaced it with stones, and then you realized the steepness of the hill was enough of a trek, rocks would just act as marbles.

"And I'm interested in you."

"Interested?" You echoed, you hadn't spoken much with Sirius, and told yourself there was no way he could catch feelings this soon. That day marked the first time you had spoken to him in class as well as out of it.

"Of course, it's not a everyday you meet someone as mysterious and secretive as you, love."

You exhaled relief. He was just curious. The two of you finally met the Owlrey structure, stepping on to the smooth concrete with scattered feathers all around, some still falling from the birds in the sky.

"I wouldn't say I'm mysterious, but I do like my privacy," You playfully glared at him as you walked backwards through the open doorway just to face him.

It was much darker inside even with the open spaces for the owls to get in and out, there was no definite life source other than the sun which was currently covered by dull clouds. Unlike outside, feathers here were grouped together and piled high, but swept out of the way for some space to walk. Owls sat in their respective spaces and watched the two look up and marvel at the building.

You searched for your own, Jives. He had a particular brown spot covering his left wing and a white line that swirled on his stomach. It was hard to miss.

Silence took over the two of you, only listening to the flutter and hoots of the owls around you. Sirius watched as you looked up and brought two fingers to your lips, a loud whistle echoing off the concrete.

Jives peeked his head out of where he was perched in one of the compartments, swooping down and landing on one of the sills at eye level. His head tilted as he watched you step over a pile of feathers and approached him, you stroked his feathers as you whispered the address to him.

Sirius waited patiently, body up against a pillar next to an owl that he shared a glance with, and then a shrug. When he looked at you again, your owl had taken off and you rested your head in your arms as you watched him go.

"Pen pal?" He questioned as he sauntered up beside you, mimicking your stance as he looked up at the sky. The birds circled and perched themselves on the roof of the Owlrey, their feathers floating down slowly but surely just out of your reach.

"Parents," You corrected him.

He hummed. For a second he didn't say anything. "What's it about?"

You whipped your head to him with raised eyebrows, "You saying it's not normal to write your parents?"

"Not for me." You rolled your eyes, turning around and beginning to leave the building. He followed you out the doors, stepping over the feathers. "Why so secretive? Planning to take over the school? You a death eater? Madly in love with Inverse Pinocchio?"

You couldn't stop the laughter that bubbles in your throat as you shook your head. "All of the above."

He laughed as well, catching up beside you. "I don't suppose you'll be letting up any time soon."

"You're getting better at this."

Last fall hunting trip experience

Last year just as hunting season had began me and two of my close friends planned our first solo hunting trip together. Both my friends Shawn and Nat were a year older than me and are family friends, i've known them since i was five years old. We planned to go up to a certain spot that we knew of through different people in our community and other hunters (I had been up the trails on quading and horse riding trips before and so had my friends), the place was filled with white tail deer to hunt and one particular spot we planned to check out was a large waterfall that sat way up in the hills there which was about a three hour quad ride from the nearest road where we planned to have Shawn's parents drop us off on our quads. I had never been on a trip like this without at least one adult so i was of course i little nervous but mainly excited, I had my dad's shotgun in a gun case that was strapped to the front of my quad (incase we ran into an angry bear) and my .22 huntig rifle on the back of my quad. We spent the day taking our time on the way to the waterfall, we were dropped off at the entrance of the trail at nine am and got to the waterfall at one pm, when we got there we were thankfull there werent any signs of any other hunters or hikers up there (concidering its realatively well know by my community). We swam in the natural pool under the water fall (which was absolutely freezing), after getting out we set up each of our one man tents we had a campfire and ate some canned food be brought. Once the stars were out we decided to go to bed, as Nat and Shawn tied our food bag up a ways away from our tents (to make sure not to atract bears) I went just about twenty feet from the camp to grab a few smaller sticks to put on the fire (just to keep the fire glowing for the night. I bent down to grab more sticks and broken branches from the forest floor (we were camped above the waterfall on the large flat rocks but i had ventured into the trees) I was bent over when i heard something, it sounded like a tree branch snapping but it had to have been pretty loud for me to hear it over the waterfall. I whipped my head up, hoping to just see a deer or rabbit but there was nothing to be seen. I brushed it off and grabbed one more stick to add to my stack i had in my arm. I threw them on the fire, said goodnight to Nat and Shawn and as I opened my tent something told me I should grab my gun off the quad. Over the years I've leant to NEVER ignore my gut, so grabbed the shotgun, two bullets and layed it beside me in my tiny tent. I fell asleep pretty quickly even through the fairly loud waterfall beside us, but I was woken up in the middle of the night by something hittign my body, I leant up in a panic and screamed, but Shawn had his hand over my mouth before i could make any noise and we fell backwards into a laying down position and he leant back up and zipped the tne closed, then with utter fear in his eyes he shimmyed away from the opening to be beside me and stared at the entrance of my tent (by our feet). I silently grabbed at the back of his shirt, I was freaking out now too, thinking there was a bear and i was going to have to go out there and shoot it if it possed a threat. (when you're a 5'8" fifteen year old girl the kickback of a shotgun isnt fun for your shoulder). I stare between Shawn and the entrance of my tent, watching in horror as the flickering embers of the small fire illuminate a massive shadow. My jaw drops, my stomach sinks and my blood runs ice cold. It towered over the roof of the tent, probably standing at 6'6" from what I could tell and it wasnt a bear, this thing was walking on two hind legs and had a bunched over back, Shawn was absolutely shaking. I thought it must be some huge guy, theres a ton of creepy stories ive heard of people being at known hunting places all the time, but I'm full on ready to shoot someone if need be, I grabbed the shotgun from beside me, loading it as quietly as possible and holding the barrel towards the shadow as it moved, slowly, across our little site and towards Nat's tent. I hadnt pumped the gun, that would be loud and I wanted to wait to see if this guy would leave before I had to go out there and tell him to get lost or get shot.Then the figure bent over and FLIPPED Nat's tent with ONE arm, she screamed bloody murder and was completely flipped over backwards, as soon as she started screaming the shadow sprinted to our right (the way I had been collecting sticks from). Nat was screaming and panicking, I lurched forward, ripping back the zipped of my tent and pumped the gun, throwing myself out and swinging the gun up just in time to see the monsterous, long hair covered beast turning back to look at me and I was so stunned as I stared into its glowing eyes I couldnt believe what I was looking at. I didnt shoot, I lowered the gun and watched the giant monster walk off into the bush. Its thick matted hair was so dark that I couldnt see it farther than fifteen feet. Shawn seen it too and Nat barely caught sight of it as it ran away in long fast strides. Sometimes I wish i had shot it, just to prove that it was real, but im happy I didn't because it would have been a wastful death. We were all terified to stay the night but we couldnt quad back down the steep trails during the night so we all crammed ourselves into Shawns tent (his was the biggest) and i had my gun right beside me the entire night, waiting for the thing to come back. The next morning there were tracks in the mud that were way bigger than even Shawns size 12 boots. I've been back up there three times since then, but with much larger groups and farm dogs with us. I hope one day ill see it that obviously again, even though it was fucking terifying, and I think I actually have had another encounter with one, or some psycho person but thats a whole nother story.

i have a bone to pick with plato. see the socratic method is basically the scene in montynpython in which a woman is weighed against a peice of wood to determine if she is a witch. and this is pretty much also the measurement system women use for me judge a cardio junkie by his ability to withstand smoke fumes. ive been up all night listening to eminem because i wish that i had the mysogny that he had because logically i should be mad at these females who lie to me but apparently developmentally theyre limited. 

so pretty much i just want my neck not to hurt and my side and platonic love isn really the kind which could support my lumbar spine but if you think im angry you are right and maybe if i rhyme my brain will work this time and ill finally be able to explain was never targeted at my objects of affections at all i like to walk around the mall see a cutie with a skirt on and she sees me looking at her tells her grandmother to leave her there because this place looks fun as she smiles at me there comes abu my friend who judges me and judges you and as i stare at her i can tell she wants me too probably more emotionally mature than my mom and a virgin with her skirt on and its workun but i have the confidence of a plastic bag floating in the wind shes cheesing while i hide behind her even though shes 4 11 and im 6 4 and because he was there i didnt pass because i dont cross paths but even thinking about having a girlfriend makes him mad. if shes too young for me i would have figured that out but it doesnt help that no matter how young or how old even the weather lady im told shes not right for me so will you make up your mind please can someone define maturity because apparently there is a reverse correlation between it and age and socrates was no sage im not really impressed that he drank poison similarly i smoke weed which takes me back to age three and birthday parties then i think about how much my life failed but only because everyone always stood in front of me. so snitch on me when i talk to you when youre in front of me at your desk and say your story about butterflies is the best begging middle and end. meawhile i havent even gotten to the first page of my legend of the sword it had a much more compliated plot which was cut off. then tell me i didnt count to tenthousand while you were listening to the teacher say the is spelled t h e and put me in a remedial reading class with a bunch of girls and address us as the girls so we can read books about a mouse who lives with his family in a house but if girls and boys are the same how can you explain i was the only one in that group to be bumped up to the advanced on by 2nd grade. i guess reading the encylopedia of animals wasnt a wase memorized their latin names bufo sativa phylobates. so by third grade i was getting so good at math that they took me out of class and had me testing material meant for 5th graders and it was really lame how can i explain all the flaws in the system to all the other people who were also ruined by it.

finally one girl who was definitely old enough for me waved at me when i looked at her and i got a boner and walked over to the ladies at the tea shop who looked at me with a disgusted look on their faces then some gangster looking dude older than i am replaces me with his hand on her shoulder.

before i was 18 i could beat up my dad and ever since then i knew not many people in my generation had much of a chance against me but i looked so thin they were not understanding. high iq causing depression have anothe smoke session even though you have athsma everyone remember to complain that i prefer to get high off one big hit i stayed in high school till i graduated but i left.

unfortunately with brain damage i could still make straight as which made me think i was ok gpa jumping above 3.68 when i only show up an agerage of 3 days.

Whoops heres my first reddie fanfic (that I'm willing to share with the internet) and my first ever fanfiction on Tumblr so that gives me some kind of excuse. Also there are spoilers. Anyways enjoy.

Summary: 

Eddie and Richie go on a late night bike ride. 

"Night mom," Eddie whispered to the large woman sleeping on the easy chair. Eddie turned off the T.V she had fallen asleep to, making the small living room completely dark. He made his way up the stairs his fingers gliding across the railing. He opened the door to his clean small room. It was decorated with trains and cars, he had begged his mother for the toy cars and electric trains when he was eleven. She was sure he would choke on the small parts, despite him being grown enough to know not to put things in his mouth. But to Eddie's surprise under the Christmas tree that year was the electric train, with its track. He was also gifted many model cars from his aunts who he was  sure didn't even know his name.

He softly shut his door behind him. The last thing he wanted was for his mom to wake up and lecture him on staying up so late. Eleven thirty was way past his bed time, and he forgot to take his pills, or just neglected to. He turned off his light and got into bed. He quickly closed his eyes, afraid of what might be in the dark. Eddie was dealing quite well with the past events but it was still scary sometimes. He still couldn't stand to think about it when he was. alone. He pulled his comforter up to his chin and fought through his thoughts as he drifted off to sleep. But he was interrupted. There was a noise. Very small and subtle. Something was hitting his window. Its a dream, Eddie. There's no one there. Its over now. He thought to himself. It stopped for a minute, but then it pounded on his window a bit harsher.

Eddie gripped his inhaler and slowly moved his curtains aside to find the source of the noise. He took a deep breath in and put his face against the glass to get a better view. Someone was throwing stones. Eddie furrowed his brow and opened his window as quiet as he could.

"Eddie!" The voice cried out in a whisper yell sort of tone. "Is your mom home? Eds is that you?" Eddie rolled his eyes.

"Go home, Richie!" Eddie yelled trying to contain his smile. He couldn't began to think about how ridiculous Richie's thought process had to be to copy the most cliche romance movies. "You'll wake her up." Then the thought of living in a romance movie grew. Richie would ride his bike to his house at midnight. Just to take him away from his strict, overbearing mother. Ride him away to engage in their forbidden love. They could curse at their unaccepting parents as they kiss in the sunrise. Maybe strip down and swim in the quarry when its light out, and then get out of the water but never put their clothes back on... Eddie blushed horribly.

"Eddie, get your shoes on, fuck nuts, and get out here!" Richie said interrupting Eddie's homoerotic fantasy.

Eddie breathed hastily through his nose and quickly pulled his short shorts over his underwear and laced up his sneakers. He grabbed his inhaler and as quietly as he could he ran outside to meet Richie.

"How's your mom sleeping without me?" Richie smirked.

"Shut up, Richie that one wasn't even funny," Eddie shook his head. "Now let's leave before my mom finds out."

Riche hoped onto his bike. Eddie started walking to his backyard to receive his bike but Richie stopped him. "Pegs,"He said pointing to the pegs on his back tire. Eddie thought about the dangers of standing on the back of the bike, but he knew he had to leave soon or his mom would crucify him. Richie shined his flashlight on the back tire for Eddie to get safely onto the bike. Eddie balanced himself on and hesitated to wrap his arms around Richie's back. But he did. And his grip tightened as soon as Richie began pedaling. Eddie's cast dug into Richie side, but Richie didn't mind. Eddie rested his head on Richie's back as he yawned.

"Where are we going, Richie?" Eddie said tiredly. Richie was quiet for a bit.

"I just wanted to leave my house." Richie's tone implied that it wasn't up for discussion. Eddie said nothing, but Richie understood that that meant Eddie understood.

"I'm surprised you actually came." He softly laughed. "Isn't past your bedtime?"

"Yes." Eddie said matter of factly, "And it's way past curfew, and my mom will probably kill me if she finds out I did this."

"Whats the point of the curfew anyways, nobody has gone missing since..." Richie trailed off.

"Maybe they don't want dip shit kids riding their bikes around town at midnight."

"C'mon, Eds this is fun! I know your pussy life style doesn't allow fun, but its about time you loosen up."

Eddie sighed."Where are we going?"

"Somewhere near the barrens, where no one can see us," Richie smirked to himself.

"What? Why?"

"Because Eddie, we really don't want to be spotted out here and then get our asses busted by our parents." Eddie nodded.

They stopped at the edge of the woods. They hopped off the bike and Richie threw it to the ground as the hurried down the steep hill. Richie shined his flashlight ahead to make sure they weren't going to run into any trees. They stopped near the stream of water that lead to the sewers.

"This brings back memories..."Eddie said looking down at the filthy water. the water looked as if it were black ink rather than water.

"This is where we met Ben right?" Richie asked.

"Yeah... Why were we down here anyways...?" Eddie asked looking back at Richie. Richie tried hard to remember, but just shrugged. Eddie turned back to the inky water.  Richie sat down against a tree. Eddie sat next to him. He shined the flashlight onto the water.

"Are we gonna stay here all night?" Eddie asked. Richie shrugged. "Whats wrong with you?" Eddie asked.

"What?"

"You're being really quiet and its making me like really uneasy?" Eddie said standing in front of Richie.

"Im scared, Eddie," Richie said quietly his gaze still fixated on the water. It flowed with awful memories.

"What?" Eddie shook his head. "Why?"

"You," he simply said. Eddie furrowed his brow. That answer slightly frightened him himself. "Eddie, I- I felt something. I cant explain, it was like a vision or a dream, I don't know. It was horrible. It was like a voice warning me. It was the worst fucking feeling ever. I-I don't know its like Bev said. I could only really remember how we felt. It wasn't a good feeling," Richie had tears falling down his freckles.

"What was it?" Eddie said approaching Richie. "Richie, its okay," He said putting his hand weakly on his cheek. Richie's eyes shot wide open. The touch brought the feeling back. His soft skin burned against his cheek.

"Its back!" He cried out grabbing Eddie's wrist to take his hand off his face.

"What?"

"The feeling! Oh god," Richie said as her threw his hand over his mouth. he dropped the flashlight. Eddie watched in the dark as Richie spilt whatever he had eaten that day. Eddie held back his own gagging.

"Richie, we should go home, you're sick," Eddie put his hand on his back. Richie wiped his mouth and nodded. "Come on. You can stay at my house tonight. I don't really care what my mom says. You need to rest, fucker."

They walked back up to the bike, Eddie held Richie's hand tightly as Richie cried. Eddie had never seen the boy in such a state. He had no idea how to react. He just treated him how he'd like to be treated when he cries.

"Do you want me to drive this time?" Richie nodded. Eddie hoped on the seat and balanced the bike for Richie to stand on the pegs. Richie quickly latched onto Eddie's back. He cried into Eddie's shirt. Eddie tried not to mind. He quickly peddled home.

They snuck inside as quietly as he could. His mother still asleep on the couch. They snuck up to his room. Eddie lead Richie onto his bed. Riche quickly buried himself into his pillow, sobbing.

"Shh. Shh you're okay," Eddie sat at his side rubbing his back. "C-can you tell me what the feeling was?"

"I-I felt, like I lost you," He said trying to recollect himself. "Like forever... Like you- you died," He fell into another fit of tears. Eddie's heart dropped. Died? God.

"It was just a dream, Richie. Look I'm alive!" Eddie smiled. But it was fake. Eddie was actually kind of scared. Richie latched onto the boy.

"Please, don't come back to Derry when we're older."

"But, the blood oath, Bill made us promise."

"Fuck Bill's promise! Wouldn't you rather stay alive?" Eddie felt a lot of terror come over his body. He knew Richie wasn't joking. He could feel his heart go still. He had no idea what to do or say. Richie continued to sob in the boys shirt as Eddie held him in his arms.

"Richie c-calm down, okay." He said as he ran his hand through the other boy's hair. Eddie continued to whisper comforting things avoiding any talk of his death. Richie's tears stopped and turned into soft whimpers. "Are you ready to go to bed now?" Eddie said as he stopped petting the boy. Richie nodded.

They laid in the bed side by side staring up at the ceiling. "Im sorry for spazzing out," Richie softly laughed, but it wasn't a real Richie laugh. He was still deeply afraid.

"Its fine." Eddie whispered.

"Night, Eds."

"Dont call me that, Richie. You know I hate when you call me that."

An Unexpected Journey

So for the last almost 7 months I have been walking more and more and finding it rather enjoyable. I've never been one for hiking or anything like that. I've liked the idea of it, but putting that into the physical act of actually doing so has always been something completely different.

Just recently, I walked 13.5 miles (21.73k) from my town to the next. Now according to the trail signs, the distance is only 7.3 miles (11.75k). But Im not sure if that "as the crow flies" (meaning a straight line) or if that is how far it actually is. But 3 different apps that I have on my phone said that it was 13.5 miles.  Which trust me, either way, my feet and back were killing me. It was such an emotional and almost spiritual adventure. I have NO EXCUSE for why I did it. It quite literally just happened. The day that I went walking, I had it in my mind that I was going to walk to the 6 mile marker. Where I park my car and start walking is about 1/4 of a mile (0.042k) from the 7 mile post marker. So I have always done the trail just past the 6.5 trail marker. But that day like I said I wanted to see where Mile 6 post was. And it was on a part of the trail that I had never done before, so if anything, curiosity got the better of me.

So, when I came up on the 6 mile marker, I decided to "go a little further" to see where that part of the trial went. When I came to the bottom of a steep hill and saw a ranch style fence, I thought "ok i'll just walk up to that fence and turn around." Had I done that, my round trip would have been just under 4 miles at that point, because I had walked over 1.5 miles. But when I got to the top of that hill and caught my breath, I noticed that the trail was flat for as far as I could see. So I thought, "ok I wonder where 5.5 miles is." A few weeks prior to all of this, I picked up the trail from a different access point and walked from the 4 mile marker to the 5 mile marker. I called a girlfriend of mine and asked her if she would come pick me up if I kept walking because I knew I probably wouldn't have the strength nor the stamina to make the return trip to my car. And that I was going to keep walking until I couldn't go any further. So she agreed and so I continued my journey.

When I got to the 5.5 mile marker (8.85k) I realized that I had seen it before, and realized where I was from having walked it a few weeks prior. So that gave me a renewed sense of energy "knowing" that the next trail access was only a mile or so up from where I was. This is when things started getting a bit spiritual for me. As I was walking, and there really wasn't anyone else on the trail, save for a biker or someone running by every now and then, but for the majority of the time, I was all by myself. 

So I started talking to god/goddess/spirit/higher power/the universe/etc and asking for the ability to complete my task of walking further than I have. Now mind you, this is when the wildfires in California, Oregon, and Washington were really bad. The air quality was 289 (which is really really REALLY bad). And because I didn't plan on doing that large of a walk, I had NO previsions with me. Thankfully this time of year all of the Blackberries are in season and so are the wild apple trees. So every so often I would stop at a blackberry patch and grab a few handfuls and mush it around in my mouth. Not only for the sweet sugary taste, but for the juice to help with my thirst. So about 2 miles from where I started eating the blackberries, I met a wonderful lady who was mucking out her horse stalls. I stopped and spoke with her for a few moments, she offered to go get me some water, but her house was about 8 acres from where she was, and I honestly didn't want to stand around and wait for her. So I thanked her and kept on going. I then came to a green apple tree. I thought that it might be crab apples, which are very tart and kind of "woody" and not very juicy. I knocked one off the tree, because at this point I was starving because I didn't eat anything before going on my walk, because having to use the restroom on the trail isn't that fun, and I didnt have any toilet paper with me, so I didn't want to eat and have to deficate on the trail. But that apple was a wild Granny Smith. It was the most delicious apple I had ever eaten (at least right then while i was a bit dehydrated and hungry) that I actually turned around and got 5 more for the trip ahead. 

By this time I was at the 4.5 mile marker letting me know that I was almost to the trail access that I was going to have my friend pick me up at. But I started thinking "its really not that much further into town." So I kept going. By this time im an emotional wreck, and everything is making me want to cry. I had begun "unpacking" emotions and situations that had happened and just really doing some mental and emotional cleaning and soul searching. My feet were in pain, my lower back was numb from the pain. But I just kept telling myself to keep going. Honestly I have no fixed memory of what I was thinking about at the time. What feelings I was having. Nothing. It would come in waves, I would think about it and play scenarios out in my head and then move on to the next thought. They kept coming like waves, and it seemed like everytime I would come up for a breath I would get hit with another one. 

After I got past the 4 mile marker and saw the 3.5 marker I was completely lost. So everything at that point was new. Which brought on its own set of emotional tidal waves. I started talking to myself and the universe or whatever spirit or god wanted to hear me and listen to the ramblings of a fat man walking in the woods. At one point I came to a large tunnel that ran under a road that I had driven over many times before, but did not realize that there was a trail that went under it. And there was a breeze that was passing through it that made it feel like an air conditioner, which took my breath away because I was really hot. I just stood there for a moment, and cooled down.

Then walking through it, I noticed all the graffiti that was on the walls and had thought about my friends from California who are street artists and how they would have loved that tunnel and would have used it as one big canvas for something im sure that would have been worthy of an art gallery.

Just on the other side of this tunnel was a long stretch of forest trail that had the most lush and prehistoric looking Sword Ferns that I have ever seen. These have quickly become one of my favorite forest plants that I have come across. So as I was marveling at the natural beauty around me, and coming to an open field, something walked out onto the road and caught my eye. At first I thought that it was a small dog or a racoon or something like that, but it was an orange tom cat. As I approached it I thought that someone may have abandoned it out there. But as the trees began thinning and I got closer to the clearing, I could see that there were houses on either side of me, and that this little guy had a collar on, and a well worn trail where he had walked many times before. But trust me, I was more than ready to scoop him up and bring him home with me, even though Bella probably would have killed both him and I.

When I had walked about 1500 yards, I could see the highway into town. This of course brought tears to my eyes, realizing how close I was to the end of the trail, and thinking about how many times I had driven that stretch of road and never knew that there was all of this beauty and semi hidden trail. Walking under the freeway and realizing that I had less than 2.5 miles to go before I was at the end of my journey, I began getting really giddy. More street art adorned the overpass. 

When I came to the 2 mile marker of the trail, I almost lost it. Years prior, when I had first moved to Washington, I had walked to the 2 mile marker from the end of the trail, and realized that it was literally all downhill from there, but in the best possible way.  My thoughts and emotions were all over the place. When I came to the 1 mile marker. I started crying uncontrollably. I started talking to my dad, my grandma, and grandpa, telling them how proud they would be of me for making it that far, and for having done something like that in the first place. I could see my end goal in sight. I know that section of the trial all to well, as I walk it several times a month. When I got to the 1/2 mile marker I called my friend and told her where to pick me up. There was a part of me that wanted to keep walking. To keep walking past the trails end, all the way to the end of the road where it met the ocean. But I had kept her waiting by her phone all day, and didn't want to make her wait around for me any longer than what she already had.

As I approached the end of the trail, where it meets a parking lot. It felt like my steps were getting heavier and harder to make. Like subconsciously I didn't want it to end. That even though I was in pain, and numb, that I needed to keep going. But the spark of sanity that I had left told me that it was more of an accomplishment than I was giving myself credit for. Stepping off the trail, and walking to where I told my friend I would meet her, was difficult. Time was off for me. I kept having flashbacks to where I was, what I had seen, and to a smaller degree who i was when I started vs who I was when it ended. Yeah it was only a few hours, and several miles of walking. But it really did have that profound of an effect on me. Especially since the week before I was seriously depressed, and had being toying with the idea of just ending it once and for all. But here I was. I had accomplished a goal that I had set for the following summer, and had accomplished it almost 7 months ahead of schedule. 

When I saw my friends car pull up, I lost all control I had and began crying. She was more than ecstatic for me, and just as shocked as I was that I had done it. I kept my sobbing under control the best that I could, just letting hot tears streak down my face. My back was in spasms, my feet felt like they were broken. My shins hurt, my calves were cramping. But I had done it. I had made a trip that this time last year would have been impossible. 

For days after my walk, I had what I can only describe as PTSD from it. I just kept having flashbacks to parts of the trail. Remembering things that I saw, the scent, the sounds. I have since started watching Trail Vloggers, and watching their journey's. And they all have said the same thing. That when they end a hike, that they get what they call "post trail depression".  I have now downloaded several hiking apps, that show all of the trails in my area, and their ratings. And I have also began stockpiling hiking gear. I've been walking with a school backpack with about 7lbs of stuff in it, just to get used to walking with a pack on. My friends husband, gave me one of his old hunting packs and told me that he has some other items that he was going to give me.

I have already planned my next "big" walk. Its just under 14 miles, and another one that I plan on doing next summer too. I would try to do it now, but its fall/winter here in the PNW now and i'm still not that experienced, and still need to build up the strength and stamina to do so. And plus it will give me some more time to get things together for it.

Travel Update #7

The End of the Road - A Reflection

About 18 months ago I pinned a world map to my bedroom wall in North Wales. I had wanted to travel for a while, I didn’t take a gap year between my studies and went tirelessly from school to college to university to a few years of full time employment without a break. Long story short, I was bored, craved adventure and happened to be middle class and privileged enough to be able to quit my job, sell my possessions and go on a big walkabout.

18 months ago I had little idea as to where I wanted to go. I didn’t know what kind of experience I wanted to have. I didn’t put much thought into how these experiences would shape the person that I am today. I remember when I sat in front of that big world map with Max and drew a crude line through Central & South America in a dried up red whiteboard marker and first discussed the idea of travelling that line by bicycle.

Since then, I’ve travelled 4000km in 6 months, over 4 countries and two continents - all by bike. I changed location nearly everyday. My bicycle weighed more than I did. Most days I woke up at 5am, cycled around 70km and climbed over 2000m of elevation. I repeated this routine day after day. I got to enjoy the true beauty, magnitude and power of the Andes. I learnt a new language. I got fit and lost 8 kgs in the process. I discovered a love for particularly awful reggaeton and garishly patterned shirts.

Away from the pace of my normal life in the UK; I was anticipating that I would learn a little more about myself. Naively before I spun my pedals for the first time back in Costa Rica, I thought I would be learning about light hearted subject matter, such as the kind of company that I would like to work for upon my return to London.

What I didn’t know back then was that cycling in this relentless manner strips you to your absolute core!

What I learnt most about was how I cope with extreme fatigue, pressure and exhaustion (the answer is not so well!) And that I have a tendency to jump headfirst into challenges without thinking too deeply about what they entail. In hindsight, it was an incredibly insane decision to cycle through the longest mountain range on the planet having never cycle-toured before in my life. I hadn’t even owned a geared bike since I was about 10 years old.

I have no regrets about any of this and despite finding the trip the most exhausting holiday of all time, I highly, highly recommend cycle-touring! Every ounce of effort that I put into cycling; I was rewarded with breathtaking views and dramatic scenery. Reaching a milestone or a border crossing was emotional as I had spent days, weeks or months and literally climbed mountains to get there.

Cycle-touring pushed the boundaries of my mental and physical endurance and I now feel confident in my ability to accomplish any challenge that life throws at me. Not a lot (in my opinion) can be harder than cycling my 70kg bike up 10% gradient hills in the rain all day everyday (yes I’m talking about you, Ecuador).

I spent so much time outdoors with so few possessions that I have a new found appreciation for small luxuries such as a sleeping in a comfy bed, wearing clean clothes and taking baths whenever I please.

The slow nature of travelling by bicycle is awe-inspiring. I know in detail entire stretches of the countries that we crossed and I have a deep understanding of how both the landscape and culture shift with this progression. I saw the big, glitzy cities and the stark, poverty stricken reality of the locals lives outside of them. This is something I never would have seen travelling by bus from one tourist hotspot to another. We spent so much time in each country that after a while, they started to feel like home.

I know that my experience cycle-touring will be something that I remember for the rest of my life and mentally revisit whenever I want to feel inspired.

Two months ago I woke up everyday with little idea as to where I would be sleeping that night and had the freedom to go wherever I pleased. My world was so big! Fast-forward to now and my world encompasses my parents house and a few kilometres surrounding it. This shift has been a huge mental challenge for me. I spent a lot of time whilst on the trip thinking about all of the amazing places that I would soon be visiting, so its been hard accepting that I will no longer be cycling the Peru Divide or through the Salt Flats in Bolivia or the Atacama Desert in Chile. Unfortunately, a few weeks after returning to the UK, me and Max split up, so I’ve been coming to terms with the fact that the person that I shared my cycle-touring experiences with, will not be part of my life going forwards.

After spending 6 months on the move, in lockdown I have started to discover that there is elegance in staying still. Travel is really just a means of filling your life with distractions - albeit new, picturesque and adventurous ones.

In the quietness of the past couple of months, I’ve learnt more about who I am and what I want out of life than during my entire trip. This time that we have for introspection and self improvement at the moment is priceless. It’s something that can’t be bought with a plane ticket and a bicycle.

I thought I would round off my blog with a some of my favourite, memorable moments. Im not sure how relevant these will be for you guys (sorry!) I just wanted to write them all down somewhere so that I don’t forget!

Here goes:

Looking down on Medellín, Colombia from high up in the mountains, lit up in the darkness. I had spent 12 hours cycling uphill that day to get there. Then spent an hour and a half descending. My hands ached the next day from holding my brakes- thats how steep it was.

Getting soaked to the bone by the tropical storms everyday in Costa Rica and Panama. Attempting to dry out my shoes every night became a ritual.

The importance of always having a supply of peanut butter and the joy of finding a rare jar in a supermarket. It was like gold dust.

So I feel like I did a half marathon with really shitty training but I actually did the damn thing. I finished it. I crossed the finish line! In exactly 2h 45 mins. So it's like, slow as hell but mega painful and just a massive slog. I'm gonna run it down for you in the stages as I felt them. 1) Why is this start line so slow. I've placed myself in between 2h 35 and 2h 45 pacers. The 2h 45 pacer said she is gonna walk. I'm bracing myself. I literally just want to finish before 3h. Okay they're all running. Everyone is running. I'm off apparently! Wahhhhhhh 2) okay I'm turning my running playlist on - RUN BY GHOSTFACE KILLAH? Is this for real? It's like my Spotify knows. This is weird. 3) alright I'm jogging slow. Winchester is so pretty. Why do these roads wind up hills though? Oh wait the big hill starts now? Okay the first three miles are uphill? Okay yeah. Yeah. I'm almost at a mile and I'm still jogging - I might be able to do this. Breathing breathing breathing. 4) And I'm walking. Why is this course like flat flat flat and BIG STEEP HILL NOW. This is crap. Okay that's 2 miles. 5) I've made it to three and a half miles and I've got shooting pains up the back of my legs. Ankle to butt, fully. This is punishment for my run on Thursday. Should have just run on Wednesday. Why didn't I rest enough? Fuck it I gotta try. 6) currently on a run/walk cycle, equal parts. The 2h 35 pacer is way ahead of me but the 2h 45 is way behind me. I'm actually alone for a lot of miles 6-9, it's weird. My playlist is banging though. Honestly, I ran for the whole of Ja Rule's Put It On Me and it felt okay. I'm about to go further than I ever have though now so it's a bit weird. 7) fuck this shitty little village Oliver's Battery WHY IS YOUR WHOLE VILLAGE A HILL. NONE OF THIS IS GOOD. It's hot and sunny and there's no fucking water but there is this gorgeous kid omg she has jelly babies I LOVE YOU LITTLE GIRL YOU HAVE SAVED ME. THERES WATER AT THE TOP YESSSSS 8) fuck me 10 miles THIS IS HORRIBLE. I'm quitting. I'm a) surprised my knee hasn't kicked in with its bitching and whining yet, b) my ankles haven't buckled and c) I'm not gonna throw up any time soon cos I drank that water too fast UGH but these consistent shooting pains which are now there whichever way I run with my feet are taking over my whole life. 9) okay, 11.5 miles. The 2h 45 pacer is running with me. I'm still gonna make my goal. There were two of them - I won't ask where her friends are. She tells me my pains are because I haven't run this far before. She doesn't know I had them in Mile 1 but OH WELL. And off she goes. thinking about the end and I feel like crying for real at this point but I suck it up and start deep breathing because I'm gonna stop if I cry now. 10) okay I'm disheartened that I can see the 2h 45 in front of me and I'm about 30 seconds behind. This is not fun and OH SHIT THERES MILE 13 right I can't have shit music for this. I need to run as much as I can. Dr Dre's What's The Difference. Yes. 11) OH MY GOD 400 m to go WHAT IS HAPPENING WHERE IS THE FUCKING END. Right there's the churchyard - they're gonna make me go all the way back round. Fuck. I can't listen to Mya's My Love Is Like Woah. I need a good one, come on Spotify... YESSSS ITS ANDERSON PAK. Some excellent disco funky kaytranada positive vibes IM SO CLOSE FUCKKKKK. 12) THERE'S JAMIE okay hold back the tears til you get to the end it's literally right there. And Anderson Pak is blaring in my ears and so is everyone's cheering me over the line and I can see it and I can't even stop my grin - my face hurts from smiling. At least these photos will be good OH MY GOSH. OH MY ACTUAL GOD IVE FINISHED. FUCKKKKK MY TOES HURT SO BAD. Okay I can't believe this. Okay there's the ugly crying. And then some guy tried to interview me for the radio and I was blubbering "I'm sorry I can't talk right now!" And then I didn't even know what size tshirt to get and then Jamie was there and then I cried for about 10 mins. I didn't even think about what my time was. He told me - 2h 45. Exactly on the money. The 2h 45 pacer came literally right in front of me - she was a minute fast. And then I cried more and then suddenly that was it. It was over. I've showered and decompressed. My toes are mangled but I definitely think I could do another one. In about 6-8 months with some more speed training haha. Really. I really should train more next time.

Signy Island - Week Seven

22nd Jan – Sunday

Lie ins are lush. I feel renewed. This last week Ive been firing on ½ my cylinders I think. Not sure why, but after a month of full speed, I think I needed to take my foot off the peddle. I’ve been effectively part time this week, with days out to help Stacey not counting as work. But today I will end an easy week with a flourish. I will have A WHOLE DAY OFF. No lab, no thinking of work, no field treks. Just cooking, some rowing, writing and photography. Stacey took my early this morning as she had to get up early anyway to sort out some krill samples (she does this so the rest of us dont have to endure the stench that seeps out from her lab!). I owe her bigly. Oh yes, and Donald Trump was sworn in on Friday. I feel like we are entering a dystopian novel. He was greeted by ½ million people marching in protest through Washington DC. It will be an interesting presidency. A few weeks ago, we all made wishes as we threw wood into a fire and collectively decided that we wished a rapid and ultimately dooming impeachment upon him…

This month is flying by! Cant believe its almost February. And Im almost 34. Jeez. Have been a bit slack at writing in this lately. I put my diary in a drawer in my room and whenever I have the presence of mind to remember it, I either couldn’t be bothered or get distracted en route. So now Im making an effort over brekkie.

The last few days have largely been lab/office based. I spent Monday trying to update my field plan for the coming month and reworking some experiments. The grid plan has had a reboot, less elegant now, but also less work. I hope.  I’ve been reading the work of a chap called Smith (we don’t do first names in scientific literature!) who has been working on Marion Island in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean area. His work spans 30 years from a word mapped food web to today, actual raw data on the energy and nutrient flow on the island. I’d love to do something like that here on Signy. He compiled data on all the input from major wildlife contributors and how the plants use it or lose it. Where it runs off the Island or gets blown back in, and the likely fate of it in the oceans. I twisted my ankle!! Not even a little bit, but a proper sprain with swellings and everything! I’d been to Gourlay, hiked back and collected all the samples. Then as I stood at the top of the Stonechute, the final rock and scree descent to base, I recalled Stacey’s recent tale of her twisting her ankle just meters from base whilst carrying a heavy load. It was just a 2cm drop off a rock, but put her off her feet for weeks. I pondered this as I heaved my loaded rucksack on, weighed down by kilos of soil samples, decided not to withdraw my second walking pole and dove down the chute. Despite being just a few hundred meters from home and the first and last part of everyone’s day out, it is one of the riskiest bits. Not least because as well as being steep and loose, it is often full of fur seals. And it was furries that I was checking for as I misplaced my footing and went over on the side of my foot.

I knew immediately that it was not good as I sat trying to catch my breath that had just been dragged from me by the rushing and unweilding pain. Not again I thought. Just last July, I’d gone over on my left leg and torn any remaining shreds of ligament and cartilagein my knee whilst up in the mountains of Norway and out on my own. At least this time I had VHF radio and base in sight. I realised I was going to need help. No way was I carrying that bag across the boulders of the high-tide route. I called in and Alex and Stacey came out to help me back down. I slowly and carefully negotiated my way back, and an hour of ice and elevation followed by a shower seem to have eased it a bit. Woke to stiffness and a substantial amount of pain this morning, but thankfully this eased as the day went on. Although the swelling has peaked and there is some bruising coming through now. I’ll be a few shades of purple soon. At least I actually did something, hate to think Im being melodramatic! I have to try and go out to do some field work tomorrow though, not sure how likely that is, I can’t walk properly. I’ve prepped the ion-exchange membranes already and they have a limited amount of time to be used you see. Looking for some advice. Someone I know was caught driving a stolen vehicle. She did not know the vehicle was stolen. Her passenger was claiming to be the new owner of the vehicle. He picked her up and was impaired so she insisted to drive, as she did not want to be driven around by a drunk guy. She was pulled over. Being pulled over was not the result of a violation, just pulled over because the truck came back as stolen. She is a responsible driver who was actually at the time a Driving instructor. She and the passenger were arrested for the stolen vehicle. At the police station both her and the guy (jerk) both stated that she did not know the truck was stolen. She was released without charges to do with the theft of the vehicle. She was however ticketed for driving without insurance. What can she do? At the time she did have her own vehicle and her own insurance policy. She has never had a ticket, accident or a criminal charge. She is in her 30's. This happened in Alberta Canada. Please no responses like get a lawyer obviously she is going to do that. I am more interested in, if she is found guilty what is the potential fine, is there any chance her car insurance would cover her in another vehicle, and so forth.""
