Breakfast (A Bones and All Story Inspired by Dove Cameron's Lyrics) Pt 2

A/N: This is the second part of this short story that is inspired by Dove Cameron's song, "Breakfast" and the film, Bones and All. This part explores Lee's feelings for Maren.

Lee's Perspective:

We're sitting outside, in an abandoned campground. A fire is burning beside us, but it can't match the one I feel inside. Your beauty is too much for me. It is the perfect mixture of grace and chaos. I crave you, and it is not in the conventional sense. I know I’m sick, but honestly, I'm getting high off of it. 

You've bewitched me, like you performed a magic trick upon me. I have my own tricks up my sleeve that I am hesitant to share. I'm known to enchant people and let them in, but just as things hit a climax, I strike. 

I've had boys and girls for breakfast. One by one their memories hang upon my neck. Their scars marked upon my body. I couldn't reciprocate the emotions they wanted from me, but they'll always be mine. Sickeningly, it makes me feel alive.

If you want to talk about power, you have definitely taken control of my jumbled senses. I question things about myself that I never gave a second thought to. You're a mystery. You're a craving. You've unraveled my world. You’ve made me feel complete. Yes, you've shown me real power

They're at a club, an unusual place for them on a Friday night for sure, but Billy had suggested everyone get out and have some fun after all of their recent near death experiences.

Yelena is watching Kate from the edge of the dance floor, her eyes hugging every curve of the archer's body as it moves along with the music. If she were a shameful person, she would surely be blushing when Kate's dark eyes find her own, but Yelena is shameless and continues to stare even as Kate gestures for her to come forward.

The music changes, a song Yelena is unfamiliar with but the lyrics drives her toward Kate, her own hips starting to sway along with the beat. She reaches the archer in a few moments, Kate's arms winding around her to pull her close.

"Dance with me," she says into Yelena's ear, her hips pressing forward as they move along with the beat.

I could be a better boyfriend than him, I could do the shit that he never did. Up all night, I won't quit. Thinking I'm gonna steal you from him.

Kate is hot against her, Yelena's hands smoothing over the expanse of skin that the archer's crop top reveals. "We are playing a dangerous game, Kate Bishop."

"Are you scared?" Kate asks, lips brushing against Yelena's pulse. "I promise I won't bite...hard."

Yelena groans softly, fingers gripping Kate's waist hard, pulling her closer as the music swells around them. "I'm not sure I can go back after this."

"Than don't," Kate replies, teeth scraping against the lobe of Yelena's ear. "Just let go,"

The universe must have divined this. Mmm, mmm. Ladies first, baby, I insist.

Yelena throws all ration thought out the window as she shifts to catch Kate's lips in a searing kiss, nails dragging up Kate's perfectly toned back. There was no way she could go back to being just friends now, Kate was hers.

"Fuck," Kate breathes against Yelena's lips, their foreheads pressed together as their bodies move to the song that seems far too perfect for them. "Take me home or I'm going to end up getting us kicked out of here."

"If I had known you had an exhibition kink, I would have taken advantage sooner," Yelena replies before their lips are crashing together again, Kate's hands slipping under Yelena's overly tight tank top.

"Please, Lena," Kate groans, fingers digging into sweat slicked skin. "I don't want to share you."

Yelena smirks against Kate's hot mouth, her own hands gripping the archer's hips possessively. "You are mine, Kate Bishop."

"God, yes," Kate sighs out, hands desperately pulling Yelena closer. "Take me home and show me."

"Patience, Kate Bishop," Yelena grins, hands slipping down to grope at Kate's perfect ass. "You need to earn it."

"You're the absolute worst," Kate whines, pressing herself closer to the Widow.

"You'll come to love it."

BUT imagine if college!tony (bc yes, bc I want and this is my headcanon) had a crush on college!steve, who has a girlfriend that doesn't treat him right (yes, I'm aware that I'm on a "toxic relationship ends and tony/steve happen" kick but I'm not going to say sorry and I'm not going to stop any time soon)

My absolute favorite thing in Descendants 3 (besides the soundtrack, which is 🔥🔥🔥) is the progression of Mal's realtionship with Hades. I have a weak spot for those kinds of relationships so it obviously won me over from the first second. All her life, Mal's only knowledge about her father was what her mother has told her - and considering this whole "you abandoned me when I was a baby" thing and her attitude towards him, Maleficent hasn't told her anything remotely positive. And then he jumps out with "No. I left your mother." implying that there's a whole story behind it, a story Mal doesn't know about and fuck, did they realy had to put this whole thing in the last movie of the franchise? There could be a whole ass angsty backstory, where Hades wanted this kid, wanted to be in his daughter's life, but Maleficent, being not the easiest person to get along with, did something to prevent that. She had always wanted power - she says in the first movie how she and Mal can rule together. Why Maleficent would even want to share? I don't think she would. Mal is a witch demigod - if you're familiar with Percy Jackson novels, you know how powerful that kind of combination can be. To have such a power bomb as a kid? Yeah, it's obvious she would want to keep this to herself. So Hades had no choice but to leave. But he still keeps an eye on his daughter from the distance. I mean, the way their first scene was written? Their first interaction in the movie? It's obviously not their first meeting, even if they are not in each other's lives. Mal holds a life-long grudge against him, thanks to her mother no less, and Hades, after 16 years of dealing with this bullshit, just plays the part. But during the song his real emotions sometimes leak through the facade. I'm sorry, but the line "I've given you everything by giving you nothing" hit me hard. It means that he actually believed Mal would be better of without him. But then he sings "How 'bout I go with you and we'll spend some time?" and "Let's make new memories, you can show me the town" meaning he wants to catch up and reconcile. But of course Mal sees some kind of hidden agenda behind it - for her, he's doing it because she's going to be queen soon and he wants to take advantage for that. If you analyze the lyrics, their entire number, despite having a happy, rock and roll upbeat melody, is extremely sad and angsty. She then demands the ember from him, and he gives it to her in the end - and why would he give away his only source of power? Because she's his daughter, and he can see how much of him is actually in her, even though she was raised by Maleficent. She's confident, she gets what she wants and she's not afraid to ask and demand. And he's proud - if the "That's my girl" comment is any indication. Then Celia reveals to Mal that Hades was "always asking about her" and this is the first time Mal has a proof that he actually cares. But she pushes it to the back of her mind, because there's more immediate problem at hand.

When they bring him to Auradon by the end of the movie, Mal gets another proof. "Actually he might do it for me." she says but she gambles. She doesn't know if he will come to save Audrey. Why would he even care? But he came. Because she was the one to ask. You think he would come if it was the Beast or Audrey's Family to ask? No way. He says "I didn't have much choice." but I feel like it's more about not having a choice in being dragged there by guards, handcuffed, than about agreeing to come. He does it all for Mal. No hidden agenda. If there was one, he wouldn't let those guards handcuff him again, he wouldn't be so calm about it. And when they take him away... Mal's face broke me. It was like she wanted to say "wait, no! Don't take him!" and then she gathered up the courage to go after him. That whole scene made me weep. All it took was "I'm gonna have to miss you all over again." and I'm sobbing. Maybe I'm reaching, but for me, when he said "Thanks for the glimpse of the sun", it meant so much more than that. And when Mal kisses his cheek... It's a Thank you, I forgive you, I'll miss you and I love you all in one. He gives her the ember back (again, his main source of power) and winks at her, as if to say keep it, it's yours. She holds it to herself, tears streaming down her face and I think this is the moment she makes a decision to take down the barrier. Because there's no way she ever wants to be separated from him again.

Which brings us to their best (or at least the cutest) scene in the movie.

"Am I invited to the wedding?"

At this point I was jumping on my bed, screaming. What an entrance! Kudos to Ben being completely frozen, even though he was able to keep his cool durring their first meeting. But it was business then. He was a king back there. Now he's boy who is facing his girlfriend's (well, fiance's) scary dad for the first time. You thought Maleficent was bad? Well, buckle up! And Mal just jumps into her father's arms with that cute laugh and my heart melts every time I'm watching this scene. And how Hades smiles at her and slowly hugs her back, first one arm, then the other, and then he just snuggles to her and I think he even kisses her head, and I'm here like 😍😍😍 At this point you know that past is the past, they're both ready to start over and rebuild this relationship, and they couldn't be happier about it. A new beggining indeed. And I love how Hades shows his approval for her relationship with Ben, saying he's sure they will be happy together, and Mal is beaming. But the moment she doesn't look, The Scary Dad jumps out and he gives Ben this look that had me dying on the floor. I'm watching you. Hurt her and I'll end you. We stan a Protective Dad!Hades, YES! And Ben... Well, even beasts can be afraid sometimes. 😂😂

Oh, what I would give to see how it progresses further, and a prequel movie would be nice. Or a novel. Or at least fanfiction. I know this movie has been out for like only two days, but fanfic writers, chop chop! I'm starving 😂.

I love this whole thing with my whole heart and I wish we could get more. Congrats to Dove Cameron and Cheyenne Jackson - their chemistry was off the charts and their voices were perfectly matched. Well done, Kenny Ortega. 👏👏👏

Extra kudos for one more small detail - I love how Mal's hair got more and more blue every time she used the ember. Nice little thing they put there.

I usually get into such a hole when I spend too much time in my room, so when I feel the thoughts coming in I make the effort to get up and move to the living room so I get some light and background noise. so i saw clueless, the musical (spoilers ahead)

“now in the 90s everything is awesome! fashions are fly, music rocks, the whole world loves america! i mean, even our president’s a baldwin.”

i feel like i came out of the womb with the dialogue memorized so i can’t relate to never having seen the movie  BUT i genuinely don’t think you will find it as enjoyable as you would if you have seen the movie. also because of the format, imo it’s a little disjointed if you don’t already know what is happening. but the man next to me at the stagedoor had never watched the movie because he “wanted dove cameron to be his first cher” and he seemed to have enjoyed it so who knows!

okay SO the entire score is repurposed 90s jams where the lyrics have been changed to suit the plot. YES this is as campy and obnoxious as it sounds. at first i was disappointed by the lack of an original score, but it is genuinely a delight once you accept this ridiculousness into your heart.

all of the iconic lines are there (”it’s a dress” “says who?” “calvin klein” got such a huge audience response) and most of the dialogue is straight from the movie with a few exceptions. there is less focus on mel’s court case and cher’s work for the pismo beach disaster relief is changed to a letter writing campaign to help stop toxic chemicals being put in their water (thus shutting down all of the dry cleaners in los angeles or something). they also took the yellow plaid theme and ran the hell away with it. i think she wears some variation of the yellow plaid outfit for almost the entire first act. the stage itself is one giant piece of yellow plaid ribbon.

i was on the fence about dove cameron when the casting announcement was made. now all i have to say is: we have decided to stan forever. she sounds amazing, she’s super charming and actually really funny. like in the movie, cher is our narrator and she talks to the audience frequently.

we been knew the good sis miss zurin villanueva would nail. next.

they changed tai’s last name from frasier to something else entirely and i’m upset because literally FOR WHY. other than that ephie aardema is fully embodying brittany murphy here. i got emotional.

this is the third show i’ve seen dave thomas brown in, no reason behind it he just happens to be attached to projects i would have seen anyway, but he’s always great. good job dave! the glasses are a good look for you!

i felt kind of weird about the cher/josh relationship until the act 1 finale. just give it time, folks. the torn/what if god was one of us mashup (yes, i said what i said) made it start to happen for me.

“So, how was it?”

Belle raised an eyebrow as Ursula leaned in over the dining table, her face full of morbid interest.

“You were at the party too, Ursula. Surely you don’t need me to tell you how it was.”

“Yes, but I didn’t get to speak to you as much as I wanted to because I was busy trying to prevent Carrie from making a spectacle of herself after a few too many glasses of bubbly.”

“I did not make a spectacle of myself!” Carrie protested. “Pass the bacon.”

“The only reason you did not make a spectacle of yourself is because I was there to stop you from initiating a karaoke tournament,” Ursula pointed out. “Sometimes I wonder why I bring you to these things.”

“Well, someone’s got to liven them up.” Carrie sniffed emphatically as she took the bacon. “I’m sure that David Nolan would have been up for karaoke. I needed to entertain myself somehow. You were talking shop with Ariel and Eric Prince all evening and I was bored!”

Sometimes Belle found it hard to believe that Carrie was a top lawyer in the family court known for her ball-breaking, take no prisoners attitude, able to make even the most hardened of judges quake in their boots at the mere mention of her name. She and Cameron had met years ago when they had interned at the same partnership and had remained in touch long after Cameron had left the legal profession. Carrie and Ursula’s arrival in Storybrooke had certainly caused more than a few raised eyebrows among the gossips, Carrie’s outrageous appearance being the main cause of the whispers, but Carrie had never cared what anyone thought of her, and her presence in Belle’s life was a breath of fresh air in the stuffy society that she had found herself in.

“Anyway, what I’m trying to ask is how was the party for you?” Ursula brought them deftly back to the point. “There were no raised voices or flying foodstuffs so I’m counting that one as a success.”

“Well, I managed to avoid Zelena West all evening by hiding whenever it looked like she was coming near.” Belle shuddered at the thought of having to talk to the woman who had styled herself as her rival without any input from Belle herself.

“She’s a piece of work that one,” Ursula muttered, glaring at the toast rack as if it had done something to offend her. “Airing everyone’s dirty laundry, as if she hasn’t got any of her own. You know I’m not entirely sure that Robyn’s father is the man she’s always claimed him to be. She just wants an excuse to stick around here and meddle. I know she’s Regina’s stepsister, but I don’t think that there’s a lot of love lost there either.”

“At this point I wouldn’t put anything past her,” Cameron said from the other end of the table. “Put her and Cora together and you have an absolutely lethal combination. It’s a great relief that Zelena didn’t take up the family business. Can you imagine her in local government?”

“You know, I keep expecting her to get a seat on the council just so that she can spend meetings ogling you, Cameron,” Carrie said. “She’s hardly been subtle in her admiration.”

“Yes, and don’t I know it.” Cameron shook his head. “Nothing about that woman is subtle. Short of a restraining order, I’m not quite sure how to get her away from me.”

“It makes no sense in my book,” Ursula mused. “If, in some weird parallel universe, she succeeded in her mission and got Cameron to have an affair with her or leave Belle for her entirely, then she’s only making herself into the villain of the piece. No amount of poison that she could spread would change that or garner any sympathy for her, and it wouldn’t paint her precious Cameron in the best of lights either.”

“Well, no-one ever claimed that common sense was one of Zelena’s strong points,” Belle said. “I don’t think that she ever thinks about anything more than what she wants in the present, and what she wants in the present is Cam.”

“It wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t already have a nice hunk of man candy on her arm,” Carrie said. “What? I’m bi, I’m not blind. What do you think her latest catch thinks of all this?”

“I doubt he’s realised yet.” Ursula snorted. “She does seem to change them as often as she changes her underwear. I think she has them on rotation, a different one for every day of the week.”

Belle burst out laughing and tried to cover it with a discreet cough into her napkin. Carrie just gave her an amused look.

“It’s all right, dear, we’re all as bad as each other,” she said.

“I know, I know. I just don’t want to be as bad as Zelena.” Belle sighed. “Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy our little brunch bitching sessions like this, but I can’t help thinking that the one we’re bitching about is doing exactly the same thing this morning and I don’t want to sink to her level.”

“When it comes to people like Zelena, there’s no point in taking the moral high ground because it’s completely meaningless to them,” Ursula said sagely. “Don’t feel bad about it. Besides, you know that we only talk about these things within the confines of this lovely conservatory. We don’t go spreading our thoughts all around the town.”

“And come on, after all the poison that she puts out about everyone else, it’s nice to get our own back,” Carrie said. She swirled the straw of her Bloody Mary around in her glass. “It’s Robyn that I feel sorry for. She’s getting to that age when the things that her mother says and does are going to affect her. But speaking of, when’s Tilly next coming?”

Belle smiled. Cameron’s goddaughter had certainly hit it off with Robyn the last time that she had visited, and Belle couldn’t wait to see that relationship blossom.

“She hasn’t said, but she’s overdue a visit. She’ll probably come before summer’s over.”

“It’ll be good to see her again.”

They fell into silence as they continued to eat, hunger outweighing the need to gossip.

“Speaking of young love, though, I did notice that Emma and Bae were spending a lot of time together yesterday,” Carrie said presently. “I think that you might want to keep an eye on those two. They’re getting to that age now.”

Belle cast her mind back to what Mary Margaret had said about having Bae to stay for a few days so that she and Cameron could have some alone time for uninterrupted baby-making. Maybe they ought to stipulate that the two teens be chaperoned all the time.

“Yes, well,” she said quickly, deciding that it would probably be a good idea to change the subject. “What’s the next big event? I know that Regina’s organising Roland’s birthday party, but I don’t think we’ll be invited to that.”

“No, I think that would be smalls and the parents of smalls only,” Carrie said. “Not that the parents won’t be in dire need of a drink by the end of it. A dozen kids under the age of ten running around hyped on sugar and food colouring is not my idea of fun.”

Belle gave a somewhat wistful sigh. Although it was still a way off, she was already thinking about brightly coloured frosting and balloons. Cameron reached under the table and squeezed her hand.

“I think that the next event in our social calendar would be Ariel’s birthday in two weeks,” Belle said, dragging her thoughts away from what could have been. “I think she’s just planning something small with a few friends; she’s never been great at organising big parties and she and Eric have been so caught up in doing up the boat and opening up their New York office recently that she doesn’t have the energy for party planning.”

“Yes, it’s always much easier when you can just turn up and get drunk instead of having to be a nice responsible host,” Carrie mused. “Maybe that’s why I always enjoy other people’s parties far more than my own.”

“You turn up and get drunk at your own parties,” Ursula pointed out. “I ended up hosting your fortieth because you were too busy dancing on the punch table.”

“And an excellent night was had by all,” Carrie said with a grin of nostalgia. “We ended the evening sitting on lilos in the swimming pool with Cameron teaching us some incredibly rude songs about kilts.”

Belle looked sideways at her husband. “I take it that this is from before we were an item.”

Gold nodded. “You’d only just moved to town and I’d only just got divorced. Things were a bit lively then.”

“A Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair,” Carrie began to sing, breaking off when Ursula stamped on her foot under the table.

“Carrie, we have polite company and it’s not even twelve o’clock yet, have some decorum!”

“I really don’t mind,” Belle protested, but the rest of the song remained unsung. She’d have to get Cameron to tell her the rest of the lyrics later.

Brunch continued to be a riotous affair, and by the end of it, any lingering stresses that Belle might have had from the previous evening had been thoroughly squashed. It always lightened her heart to know that whatever happened, Carrie and Ursula would always stand by her and Cameron’s side.

As they were walking back along the road towards the pink house, Belle slipped her arm through Cameron’s, enjoying their closeness.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said,” he began presently. “About Mary Margaret’s offer.”

“Yes?”

“I think we’re a little overdue a break, and I’m sure that Bae wouldn’t mind being able to spend more time with Emma. I’ll call Dove and get him to make sure that the cabin’s ready for next weekend.”

Belle smiled.

“Thank you, Cam.”

Even if nothing did come of it, it would certainly be nice to spend a romantic weekend away. As Cameron had said, they were overdue, with other stresses of life and business and work eating into their time with each other. It would be nice to take a day or two to reconnect as husband and wife.

2017 in review

What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before? flew on a plane! and I did it alone. Not as bad as I thought it would be though haha
