G, P, Q, U (thomas)
G : GIFT. is your muse good at gift - giving or do they struggle to get it right?
P : PARTNER. what does your muse look for in a partner? looks / personality?
Q : QUESTION. would your muse ask the big question or expect their partner to?
Ele perguntaria, com certeza. Antes de conhecer Nicole, nunca tinha imaginado que chegaria no ponto de considerar pedir alguém em casamento. Entretanto, quando decidir pedir não vai ter nada que o faça mudar de ideia.
U : UNREQUITED. has your muse had their heart broken?

Squash's Reading List Year In Review 2024
(I've also posted this on WordPress here, where it might be more readable: https://jesuisgourde.wordpress.com/.../30/readinglist2024/)
Last year I read 92 books. I didn't plan on trying to surpass that number but I did, quite easily. This year I read 116 books. I didn't start off with any specific reading goal, but early on I decided to make it my goal to read more books by not-cis-men (women, trans/nonbinary people, etc) than by cis men. I hit that goal with 72 books. I did want to reread a number of books; I reread 7 books, but not all were the ones I listed in my last yearly reading review. I read 89 fiction books and 27 nonfiction. Of the nonfiction, the genres were mainly biography/autobiography, essay, science, and history. I read 45 books from small press publishers. I read 39 books by and/or about queer people. I don't have a super nice photo spread this year because I read a lot of books at work; I was going to screenshot my goodreads grid but unfortunately they have (frustratingly) changed the format from grid to list in the past week.
Here's a photo of the books I read that I do own, which isn't a whole lot, since I read most of the books at work this year:

I'll do superlatives at the end, here is the list of what I read this year, in chronological order. (Apologies for the random line breaks in the middle of the list, tumblr doesn't like it when you have 50+ lines without breaks)

I DNF'ed a few books, but all were put down with the intention of finishing them at some point. Mostly they were books I needed to read when I was less busy/in a different headspace. I DNF'ed: Soldiers Don't Go Mad: A true story of friendship, poetry and mental illness during the first world war by Charles Glass, a reread of Her by HD, and The Apple In The Dark by Clarice Lispector. The Lispector and HD are both modernist novels that need 100% attention, and the Glass book is a nonfiction book (very good so far) that I put down in favor of something that at the time was more interesting.
I gave out a lot of 5 stars this year. The books I rated as 5 stars were: The Changeling by Joy Williams, The Recognitions by William Gaddis, Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield, 33 1/3 Unknown Pleasures by Chris Ott, Transformer by Simon Doonan, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, Body by Harry Crews, Organ Meats by K-Ming Chang, Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe, and Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin.
~Superlatives~
Like last year, I'm going to do runners-up because I read so many books.
Favorite book: The Recognitions by William Gaddis. I have to pick this one as my favorite for the year, because reading it was a journey, and because it was a book that was exactly everything I love in a book: fascinating, very human characters, weird formatting, great dialogue, metaphors galore, and most importantly, hundreds of cultural, artistic, historical, biblical and literary references. I started this book on January 4 and I finished it February 22. It was so unbelievably dense, probably the densest novel I've ever read, and I absolutely loved it. So much is going on in this novel that it's hard for me to summarize. In the very shortest version of a summary, it is a novel about counterfeits (specifically paintings, but counterfeits in all and any forms) and Catholicism in 1930s/40s New York. The main character is a young man named Wyatt Gwyon, a talented artist who instead of painting for himself, becomes a skilled counterfeiter-- not because he wants to make money, but because he's obsessed with the perfection of making exact interpretations of other people's art. He also struggles with religion and belief due to his strange religious upbringing. Many, many other characters are also focal points throughout the novel. The book is unique in that it doesn't use quotation marks when characters speak and rarely uses "he said"/"she said" or any similar phrase. But Gaddis is incredibly talented at writing dialogue so that each character's voice comes through, and it's obvious (except when he doesn't want it to be) who is speaking. Gaddis is also wonderfully scathing, and much of the novel is incredibly witty and intelligent observations about the Modernist art world and artistic spaces in general. The characters are all fascinating, there is a lot of mirroring and metaphors. I say this book is about counterfeits in every form, because it constantly highlights different ways in which each character is faking something, or lying, or pretending to be/know/do/think something they are not. This book was incredible, I annotated every single page and had so much fun reading it, even though or perhaps because it was so unbelievably dense.
Just for a bit of reference, here are a few of the more annotated pages in my copy of The Recognitions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Runner up: Body by Harry Crews (more on this one further down)
Least favorite book: Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. I was so disappointed by this book. The blurb on the back made it sound like it was going to be really beautiful and interesting and unique. It wasn't. It was all tell and no show. It follows Ada, a person who is born with one foot in the spirit world. A traumatic experience at university causes her to develop split personalities as the spirits from the other side step forward to protect her from trauma. Unfortunately, the spirits who now control her body have darker, more dangerous desires. Sadly, there was almost no plot, just description after description of Ada's unhealthy relationships and erratic behavior. But because the narrative is so distanced from said relationships and from Ada, the high stakes of this behavior is not felt, not really. Interesting characters can easily save 'all tell and no show type' books, but none of the characters get delved into with any depth, even Ada. The show rather than tell narrative also seriously undermines the poetic prose that crops up almost at random. This book felt flat. No plot, little stakes felt, no interesting characters, tell rather than showing everything, and it's not compelling at all.
Runner up: Playboy by Constance Debre. The back of this book describes it as a memoir detailing the writer's "decision, at age forty-three, to abandon her marriage, her legal career, and her bourgeois Parisian life to become a lesbian and a writer." Which sounds amazing! But it isn't! It's unbelievably pretentious and quite boring. It's mostly just complaining hidden by a facade of faux-philosophical meandering and directionless autobiographical vignettes. The author is a lawyer and she spends most of the time complaining about poor people and about women. It's so hilariously misogynistic. It's just various vignettes of her relationships with various women (who she dislikes and disparages for being femme or having bad bodies or for having lowbrow/uncultured interests etc etc) and then her going and visiting her ex-husband and teenage son, and then complaining that she has nothing. There's little to no emotion in the book, she is not charming, and her pseudo-philosophical musings are boring.
Most surprising/unexpected book: Body by Harry Crews. This book crept up on me in terms of a favorite. Crews' writing is not for everyone, but it's absolutely for me. The book follows bodybuilder Shereel Dupont and her trainer, Russell, who are at the world bodybuilding competition. Shereel has left home to compete over the past year and is now one of the most likely to win. Unfortunately, her family, who are "corpulent rednecks" with odd habits, show up to cheer her on, causing disruption and chaos throughout the hotel at which the competition is held and turmoil for Shereel herself. This book blew me away completely. Every time I thought it had reached a plateau of weirdness and chaos and insanity, it ratcheted that all up even higher, culminating in the most perfectly fucked up ending.
Runner up: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin. A mother trapped in the liminal space between life and death is made by an unfamiliar changeling child to retell the events of the recent past, desperately trying to pinpoint the moment she can reverse the environmental poisoning of herself and her daughter. I picked this book up because it sounded interesting, and then it ended up being an amazingly written short horror novel. It had a lot of interesting thoughts on motherhood and the horror of being a parent - not in a negative way, but the horror of wanting to protect and keep your child safe and the inability to do so.
Most fun book: Like Flies From Afar by K Ferrari. I fully judged a book by its cover with this one, and it did not disappoint. Small-time criminal/oligarch Mr Machi thinks he's hot shit, until he pops a tire on the way to an appointment and discovers an unidentifiable corpse in his trunk. As he scrambles to deal with the body, his paranoia grows as he tries to calculate who out of all his enemies and employees might be responsible, and who is trying to frame him, and who the body might be, and his life slowly transforms into a nightmare. Everyone in this book is loathsome, but in a way that is so fun to hate. The whole novel is a romp of panic and paranoia, people who think they're so cool and hard exposing how uncool they are, and a mystery that's so fun because watching the protagonist panic is a kind of schadenfreude.
Runner up: Transformer by Simon Doonan. This is a book for people who love Lou Reed, by a man who loves Lou Reed. It's just a wonderfully written biography that focuses mainly on the album Transformer, but also gives Lou Reed's history and is interspersed with stories about Doonan's own thoughts and experiences with Reed. The whole book is really passionate and vivid, and fun to read even if you don't have the album immediately to hand.
Best queer book: Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. Leah, a marine biologist, has returned from a deep-sea voyage that went wrong. Her wife Miri begins to realize that something is wrong, and Leah came back changed. The narrative switches between Miri's point of view as she tries to reach Leah and struggles help her despite not knowing what's happening to her wife, and Leah's point of view as she remembers and recounts what happened to her during her submarine voyage. I started this book at work and brought it home. In the middle of reading it, I stopped to finish some task (I think it might have been to make dinner), and ended up having to cut the task short because I needed so badly to keep reading. The most compelling part of the book is the very different ways the two characters' love for each other shines through, even in the darkest moments of the novel.
Runner up: Darryl by Jackie Ess. The titular narrator of this novel discovers that he genuinely enjoys a cuckolding lifestyle, watching men have sex with his wife. But then he realizes that part of the reason he likes it so much, is that maybe he wants to be the wife. His explorations with sex and gender and relationships (and basketball) begin to unravel his marriage and his friendships and his own mind. Then he learns more about one of the men his wife has been sleeping with, and things get dangerous. I loved this book because despite it being written by a trans woman, the story doesn't at all go where you'd expect regarding gender or sexuality. It's satirical, it's witty, it's got some cool things to say about kink and about gender, and it's totally original.
Saddest book: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. This is a classic I'd been meaning to read for a long time. The narrator is an American WWI soldier named Joe who was hit by an artillery shell and has woken in the hospital having had his arms and legs amputated, as well as most of his facial features mutilated beyond use/recognition. Trapped in his body, he drifts through memories and musings on life and war and philosophy as he tries to keep track of the days and to figure out some way to communicate with the hospital staff. It's no wonder this book is a classic. The writing is incredible, the imagery vivid and the plot totally gripping, even as it switches between the peaceful past and the horrible present. The end is completely gut-wrenching.
Runner up: Minor Detail by Adania Shibli. This novel explores what in history is a minor detail, and what impact that little moment might have on someone in the future. The first part of the novel opens in Palestine in 1949, in a military camp, where a group of Israeli soldiers (led by a captain suffering from a bite-induced hallucinogenic fever) kidnap, rape, and murder an unnamed Palestinian woman and bury her body in the desert. Fifty-odd years later, a Palestinian writer learns about this "small" moment in history, which occurred 25 years to the day before her birth, and becomes obsessed with learning more. She obtains an illegal pass to the Zone in which the woman died, determined to go there and find more information. I don't want to summarize much more because I don't want to give away any of the hard-hitting plot points. But Minor Detail was published in 2020, and it explores the cycles of violence and the ways in which oppression has not changed for the Palestinian people. It's a book that I wish I had read twice because (as the title suggests) there were a lot of small details that repeated themselves or were less noticeable at first but slowly grew or became important later in the story, and I'm sure I would have noticed more.
Weirdest book: The Changeling by Joy Williams. I love Joy Williams! I love everything she writes! Her themes are always so interesting and her writing style is so unique. The main character, a young woman named Pearl, escapes her terrible marriage by joining a rich older man and in doing so ends up living with him on an island that is populated by children he has taken under his wing. Pearl wants little to do with them and spends most of her days getting drunk by the pool -- the children are eerily smart and her son has joined their games and lessons, and they all want her attention. But her son is less and less her son as time goes on, and the children are not always the children, and the adults in the house are all bizarre and half-mad. I wish I could give a better summary, but Joy Williams books are always difficult to summarize, because so much of the stories are less about the plot and more about the characters just feeling things at the reader, and the plot is often built on or around odd occurrences and philosophical musings. This book blew me away with its imagery and its metaphors. I want to reread it, because it was just so amazing. My absolutely favorite thing about Joy Williams (and this is true for all of her books) is the way she writes these incredibly profound and philosophical phrases like they're nothing at all, like they're so easy, just breezes on by them even though she's just punched you in the chest. It's amazing.
Runner up: Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin.
Most gripping book: Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe. This book is an absolute masterclass in pacing. It tells just a few fragments out of the whole history of the Irish Troubles, but the fragments that are focused on are woven together with brilliant timing, humanizing and vivid portrayals, fantastic analysis and contextualization, and altogether excellent writing. Every time I put this book down I wanted to keep reading, to know what was going to happen next. The book has 3 focal points: Gerry Adams, (alleged) leader of the IRA; Dolors Price, a member of the IRA; and the family of Jean McConville, a woman kidnapped by the IRA. At first, all three storylines are disparate, but Keefe slowly weaves them together, pulling all the threads of context and action and years in prison or government or delinquent schools together slowly but steadily. The book reads like a thriller, and I adored it completely. (Yes, I do know about the miniseries. I haven't finished watching it yet!)
Runner up: Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield.
Book that taught me the most: Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe
Runner up: The Toaster Project: Or A Heroic Attempt to Build a Simple Electric Appliance from Scratch by Thomas Thwaites. This could also go under weirdest book, easily. As a graduate art school project, Thwaites decided to attempt to build the simplest (and cheapest) appliance he could think of - a toaster - fully from scratch. Quite literally, starting with mining the elements to make the right kinds of metal and figuring out how to make the right kind of plastic. Half of the book is Thwaites' attempts to build various elements of a toaster - and how they go wrong, or right, and why it's so hard. The other half discusses all the processes that go in to making all these elements in a more manufactured setting, their impact on the environment and the economy, and the difference between cheap mass-produced products that break down vs more expensive products that last longer. The writing was fun and included photos and diagrams and interviews with various industry professionals Thwaites contacted to learn more.
Most interesting/thought provoking book: The Recognitions by William Gaddis
Runner up: Organ Meats by K-Ming Chang. I've now read everything this author has published and this is by far her best book. Her narrative style is so unique and so poetic, and the themes she always comes back to are so interesting, and they culminate in this amazing novel. This magical realist novel centers around two best friends, Anita and Rainie, who are both first generation Taiwanese-American. The story opens when they are adolescents, and Anita has recently learned that they come from generations of dog-headed women and women-headed dogs. They vow to become dogs together, tying a string around each other's throats as collars and playing at dogs in the empty lot near their apartment complex. But Anita's dreamlike imagination and obsessively loyal personality starts to clash with Rainie's more reserved nature, and when it becomes too much, Rainie's family moves away. Rainie grows up, while unbeknownst to her, Anita has sunk into a dreamworld and her body has begun to rot. She narrates her family's past and her mother's bloodline because she cannot narrate her own present. When she returns to the town she grew up in, Rainie discovers Anita's condition, and knows that she is the only one who can save her. This novel is beautiful, incredibly poetic, and experiments with formatting and narration in really unique ways. Its exploration of friendship and queerness and obsession and tradition and folklore is absolutely fascinating. I often write in my books and underline sentences or paragraphs that I really love. I didn't write in this one, because I would have ended up underlining the entire novel.
Longest/shortest book: My longest book was The Recognitions by William Gaddis at 952 pages, and my shortest was Notes On Camp by Susan Sontag at 57 pages.
General thoughts on all the other books that didn't get superlatives:
-Child of God by Cormac McCarthy. This is the first McCarthy book I've ever read (I know, I know) and I really enjoyed it. You just watch a horrible guy walk around in the rural countryside of a small town, doing increasingly fucked up things and committing various awful crimes. Which is exactly up my alley in terms of literature. The main character, Ballard, is someone who is so weird and pathetic that he becomes turned inside out into evilness. You feel sorry for him but you also hate him and he's also fascinating because he's so fucking weird. It's a great book.
-The Ghost Network by Catie Disabato. This book was so much fun to read while living in Chicago. It's a rock n roll mystery novel that riffs on Situationism and the L tracks and maps. A rock star disappears, and the main character who is a fan of her's is determined to find out what happened to her. What she uncovers is a series of clues based on defunct lines and stations of the Chicago transit system, and the Situationist concept of detournment, which lead her towards finding out what actually happened to the rock star. This book was so much fun, and so much of it was based on real life defunct train lines and the actual Situationists, both of which I found really interesting. The ending was also just so good! Somehow I managed to have read everything I needed to in order to get every single reference in the book, which was really surprising to me, because they all came from different places.
-New Animal by Ella Baxter. This book baffled me. It is about a woman who works as a makeup-artist at her family's morgue. When her mother dies unexpectedly, she skips the funeral and goes to stay at her estranged father's house. While there, trying to figure out how to vent her grief, she decides to try out the local kink scene. Her first experience is with a dom who is a manipulative, horrible asshole. She has a bad time, but wants to try again, so she goes to a place that hosts scenes. She acts like she knows what she's doing when she doesn't, no one gives her any instruction, so she fucks up massively, and everyone has a bad time. It's the worst portrayal of the kink scene I think I've ever encountered. The author said she did a lot of research but it just seems like a lot of terrible assumptions and misinterpretations. I thought it was going to be a book that positively portrayed kink and people who like the kink scene, but it's very much not. It didn't even feel like the author was doing this so the character would learn that she can't run from her grief. It seemed more like the author had one bad experience due to poor communication or shitty individuals, and then decided that's what the whole scene was like.
-Harold's End by JT LeRoy. I read this book in high school (or perhaps just after graduating) and totally fell in love with it, and then never saw another copy until recently. It was so good to reread it, to re-experience the gorgeous watercolor portraits that come with it. The novel follows a young street kid/hustler who lives with other street kids; all his friends have pets but he doesn't. A john takes a liking to him and buys him a snail as a pet, who he names Harold. The book follows him as he lives on the streets and as his relationship with the john develops. The book is classic JT LeRoy, and the end is LeRoy's usual style of characters experiencing a life lesson and growth but not necessarily in a happy way. It definitely holds up!
-Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson. This was such a fun and weird book and I really enjoyed it. Markson's idea for the novel was "what if someone actually lived the way that Wittgenstein's Tractatus suggests?". What we get is a woman who believes she is the last person on earth (it is never confirmed whether this is true or not). She muses on life, culture, art, philosophy, and her past, and discusses her trips across the world despite its emptiness. But her story changes constantly; she's always referencing things she said before and editing herself. It's a weird, fun, fascinating novel with a lovably weird main character.
-A Feast Of Snakes by Harry Crews. Yet another fucked up book that I loved. It follows Joe Lon Mackey, a former high school football star that now lives a dead-end life in his hometown in Georgia. Each year the town hosts the Rattlesnake Roundup, where people come from many states away to try and catch as many rattlesnakes as they can in order to win a competition. Joe Lon is in charge of the event now that his father is too old and ill. He's uncomfortably self-aware of his own personal failings and his inadequacy and his abusive relationship with his wife; he'd rather not think about any of it and is incapable of figuring out how to change things. But his old girlfriend is returning for the event, and his father's attempts to control the goings-on from afar mean he's unable to stop thinking about where his life has ended up and where it's going. All this drives him slowly crazy with desperation until the insane ending. Crews is incredibly talented at writing characters that are likeable despite being so flawed and fairly awful people. This book is no exception.
-Milkshake by Travis Dahlke. What a weird novel! In a near-future dystopian heatwave, an 11 year old girl escapes the environmental catastrophe by traveling back in time to her past life as a fertilizer salesman whose marriage is slowly collapsing. I really enjoyed it, because it was just so odd. Now that I'm thinking about it, I feel as though it would have been really interesting to read just before or just after reading Tentacle; both books focus specifically on time travel and on environmental disaster.
-Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor. At the opening of the box, a Witch has been murdered in a small village in Mexico called La Matosa. The rest of the chapters are narrated by different characters, who all have some small or large hand in the death of the Witch, who was a woman who the whole town visited in secret for medicine, fortune-tellings, and advice. The narrating characters include a schoolgirl, a drug dealer, a prostitute, a hapless husband who wants to make something of himself, and a teenager in love with his young girlfriend. With each narration we learn more about the Witch, and her mother who was a Witch before her. Slowly, we get inklings of the nature of the murder, and the revelation at the end is brutal. Melchor's writing is incredibly vivid, and the characters are all caught in the cycle of poverty, driven by superstition and fear and hardship. None of the characters are likeable, but they're all so human.
-Biography Of X by Catherine Lacey. In a dystopic alternate-universe US, where the Southern Territory split from the North after WWII and established a fascist theocracy, a woman named CM grieves her recently deceased wife X, who was a famous artist. Despite X's wishes, CM decides to delve into her wife's past, researching her history before they met and before she was known as X. She uses her credentials and privileges as a journalist to cross into the Southern Territory and learn about X's family and the communities from which she came, her activism and her hidden lives, and begins to realize that maybe learning all this about the woman she loved won't benefit her in the long run and that maybe their relationship wasn't as rosy as she thought. This novel combined fiction and real life in really fascinating ways, and includes both real and fake sources in its footnotes.
-The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. A famous and successful painter murders her husband and then refuses to speak. A psychologist who is also a fan of her work is determined to get her to speak again. Obsessed with uncovering the truth, he ends up taking risks that threaten himself and his patient. A fun mystery that went down easy. It didn't attempt to be too realistic from the start, so suspension of disbelief wasn't hard. I do think the book could have done without the entire last part. Leaving it on the realization of what had happened and allowing the reader to sit with that realization (especially with how creatively the twist is presented) would have had more impact I think than the slower and less engaging denouement of the last 3 chapters, which were far weaker than the rest of the book.
-Acid Snow by Larry Mitchell. I reread this book for the first time since about 2009 and really enjoyed it. It's a very sad novel about a man living in NYC during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Most of his friends and lovers have died and he's scared and sad about his own life and cynical about love, but he's attracted to the man who owns the shop below his apartment. It's a dark book, sad and scared and jaded. I think the main character's anxiety and grief that slowly escalates into paranoia is an amazingly surreal way to portray all the emotions that consumed the queer community at that time. I also loved the sort of lack of closure at the end - because many people didn't get that.
-Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. I don't generally go for science fiction novels, but I read this one because so many people said they had liked it. I really enjoyed it. The unnamed narrator, a biologist, is part of an all-female expedition into a harsh, unknown territory that has appeared adjacent to the US. The suspense and strangeness of the novel had excellent pacing. The descriptions were also so vivid and clear, which made the story's weirdness so compelling. I loved watching the main character struggle to remain objective the whole time while knowing that she's failing. Her growing fascination and terror is so fun to read as each feeling tries to overtake the other. I also think it was great as a standalone and I feel no interest in reading the other books in the same universe.
-Nevada by Imogen Binnie. I'm a bad queer person, I hated this book. In it, the narrator, a trans woman, is frustrated with her life and has just broken up with her girlfriend, so she steals her ex's car and drives away, ending up in a small town where she spends the night with a department store employee. I just really don't like books that are meandering tell and no show without characters or a plot that are interesting. This entire book felt like someone recounting their weekend over breakfast, complete with casual informal language and overuse of the word "like". Which would be fine if any of the characters were compelling, or if the plot was really interesting and went somewhere, but it didn't. A good portion of it is just musings on New York City, but without the creativity or vividness that other portrayals of NYC have to offer. After I read it, I learned this book was kind of the catalyst for a specific style of trans writing. Which also explains why I hated Detransition, Baby when I read it a couple years ago, as it's a sort of literary descendant of this. I'm happy to read books that are tell rather than show....so long as something interesting happens or at least one of the characters is unique and compelling. This book sadly has neither.
-Essex County by Jeff Lemire. I read this for an English class in university, so this was a reread and I really enjoyed reading it a second time! All the stories in this collection are so beautiful and compelling, all the characters are so real. And the art style is fantastic. The stories revolve around characters living in the titular Essex County in Canada, across a number of generations. It weaves together their relationships and their lives, much of which revolves around hockey. There were some storylines I remembered quite well and others I didn't remember at all, so it was really nice to revisit this one.
-Ravage: An Astonishment of Fire by MacGillivray. Man, this book had so much potential. This novel is a fake biography of a fake poet who disappeared from a Scottish island in the 1960s after falling into delusions that he has become a demon. The fascinating thing about this book (at first), is that it's completely convinced that it is an actual nonfiction book. It gives no hints that it's fake, and the first 50 pages are convincingly written with an academic, nonfiction voice as the novel is utterly convinced of its own delusion of factualness. The novel claims to be an analysis of found papers: first, the poetry and written tracts of Tristjan Norge, a Norwegian poet, then the analysis of his works by MacGillivray, and finally, the diary of his companion Luce Montcrieff. Unfortunately, it is fairly repetitive in a way that bogs the reader down quite a bit. Even so, I think I would have enjoyed much, much more if the ending did not abruptly switch genres to a supernatural/fantasy novel in a way that was startling and had no previous indications of earlier in the book. Up to the last 20 pages I thought it was interesting, even when it was dense, but the end felt like the author didn't know how to end the novel and just used the deus ex machina of supernatural occurrences.
My goal for 2025 is to read majority nonfiction. I don't know if I'm going to actually meet that goal, but I'll try. I don't have any goals for how many books I want to read, especially because I tend to read nonfiction quite a bit slower than fiction, so I don't have a good idea of what my reading amount goal should actually be. This year I also forgot entirely about my attempt to read all of Jean Genet's (translated) works, so I will hopefully actually meet that goal in 2025, since I only have one or two books left to read. But my first three books of the year are going to be Soldiers Don't Go Mad by Charles Glass, which I started this year but didn't finish, The Declared Enemy: Texts and Interviews by Jean Genet, and Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks by Patrick Radden Keefe.

Part 15 of Without Me
Tumblr media
Your father was sipping at his water when you walked up. “Hi.” He gently brought you into a hug but it was stiff. “Congrats.” He said gruffly.
"What's wrong?" You asked. "Why are you upset?!"
He sighed. “I’m happy for you, I am. I just think it’s too early. You haven’t even been married a year. How do you know it’ll last with Bruce?” He asked.
The hurt spread across your face in an instant. "Funny, you guys had Nichole maybe a few months after getting married." You countered. "That wasn't too early, now was it?"
“Things were different.” He shook his head. “We didn’t have access to the best birth control.” He told you. “And I wasn’t a known playboy.”
You clenched your jaw. “We planned this, Dad.” You told him. “For months we talked about it before deciding to try. And clearly, you don’t think very highly of my husband.” You said angrily. “I thought you’d be happy he could provide for us!”
“I wanted you to not have to rely on some man. You’re throwing your dreams away. You don’t think he’s going to make you be a stay at home mom?” He scoffed. “The company will be his priority in the years to come.”
“No, he won’t.” You countered. “I get to choose what I do. We chose to wait for me to finish my degree so I could go to work!” You shook your head. “You have no idea what you’re talking about, and you’re making it sound like I’m being an idiot. Which, if I was, I clearly inherited that from you! With the way you’re acting.”
He huffed. “I’m just disappointed.” He shook his head. “You know mom and I will help you. Always. But I wish you thought more about this.”
“I did. I just never thought you’d be upset to know you’ll be a grandfather.” You said sadly, walking away to find your mom.
She immediately hugged you. “My baby, I’m so happy for you!” She said instantly.
You hugged her back. “At least one of you is.” You sighed.
She kissed your head. “Your father is just worried and he gets angry when he’s worried.” She reminded you. “He’s always been like that.”
“He called Bruce a playboy, said I’ll be forced to stay at home, and said that his focus will be the company.”
She gave you a soft look. “It’s not far fetched but I’m not focusing on that. I’m excited to be a grandmother.”
You stepped back and shook your head. “So, both of you were bullshitting me.” You scoffed. “Acting like you like Bruce. That you didn’t believe all the shit you heard. Nice. Real nice, mom.” You walked away, angry with your parents.
Your mother sagged slightly, wishing you could just see their worry. She hoped that you didn’t stay angry at them too long. She already loved her grand baby so much and didn’t want you to keep them from her and your father. Sighing, she went to find her husband.
You were still fuming when you went back inside to find Bruce. Finding him, you pulled him into a kiss.
He made a noise of surprise but melted into it, holding your hips. Pulling away, he pecked your lips once more. “What happened?” He asked, cupping your cheek.
You looked at him tearfully. “They don’t approve.” You shook your head. “At all, and it’s obvious they never did.”
He frowned. “Of me? Why? I feel like I’ve shown them I can take great care of you and our future family.” He was confused. He thought that they liked him.
“He called you a playboy, said that I’ll be forced to be a stay at home mom, that you’ll be focused on the company, that it’s too soon….” You shook your head. “Mentioned that we hadn’t been married even a year. I pointed out that they had Nicole just a few months after they got married. So, I went to my mom. Who was all excited, and when I told her what he said she said ‘he’s not too far off’.” You said angrily. “I said they were both bullshitting me and walked away.”
He sagged a bit. “I’ve changed. Yeah, we have the company but I’m not taking your life away. Right?” He asked.
You shook your head. “No! Of course not.” You cupped his cheeks. “You’re adding to it.”
He nodded. “I wouldn’t force you to stay home, either. I figure our parents can help and Alfred does good. And then day care.” He hugged you. “I’m sorry that they feel that way. I promise that my ‘playboy’ ways are behind me. Except when I see you in yoga pants. Then, I can’t be held responsible for my horniness.” He teased.
You chuckled weakly. “I just can’t believe them. You’re my world.” You assured him. “You and our growing family.”
He kissed your head. “What matters is we love each other. My parents are thrilled at least.” He reminded you. “I’m very glad my mom now wears lipstick that doesn’t come off. Or my face would look very different right now.”
You laughed at that. “I would love to see you covered in kisses.” You told him. “Because that would seriously be the best thing ever right now.”
He grinned. “I’ll make that happen for you one day.” He promised. “Now, let’s go see Maryanne. I’m sure she would love to gush over babies with you.”
You nodded, happy to have a friend. “Let’s.” You wiped your cheeks, not wanting to go out making it obvious you’d been getting emotional.
He gently kissed your forehead before leading you out.
Tumblr media
The rest of the party went much better, thankfully. You and Maryanne set up a girl’s day for the following week, which Bruce was completely on board with. He told you that you definitely deserved it and offered to pay for a special spa. He would stay home and play house dad to the dogs that day, unless he was told to go to the office.
That night you were looking up baby things while Maryanne helped put away leftovers. “You really don’t have to.” You told her.
“I missed doing normal things at school so shush.” She smiled. “I’ll be out of your hair soon, I just needed company.” She told you. "I'm looking forward to our girls day. I'm hoping we can be friends."
You nodded. “I’m hoping we can, too. It’s nice having someone.” You smiled. “Especially someone who knows the life I married into.” You chuckled. "I am so not fancy."
She chuckled as well. “That’s okay. It’s not for everyone. I like your style.” She said easily. "Comfort is underrated these days."
You nodded. “Sneakers all day, everyday.” You grinned.
She laughed. “Okay, can I use the restroom before I leave?” She asked.
"Of course. Down the hall, first door on the left."
“Thanks!” She ran off.
You smiled and scrolled through the endless page of Pinterest. You had plenty of time to plan, but were eager to get ideas. You had created endless boards and couldn’t wait to show Bruce. You told him you wanted to do the planning and decorating yourselves so it was all you. He was currently out back with Happy and Lucky, being a big kid.
You gently closed your laptop after a moment and stretched. It had been a long day. You couldn’t wait for some sleep. Curled up with your husband. You got some water before heading upstairs. You hoped your parents would come around soon, as well. While your mother was at least excited, you felt it was forced. At least Nicole wasn’t there, and you wouldn’t have to hear her mouth. You could only imagine.
You began your night routine once you were upstairs and yawned, fighting sleep. You wanted to wait for Bruce. You sat in bed, rubbing lotion onto yourself and waited.
Tumblr media
Bruce let Happy and Lucky in, chuckling at how they shook their fur off instantly. “Alright boys, time for bed.” He led them to their beds. “Not sleeping with mom and dad tonight.” He told them.
Both dogs whined and Lucky got onto his leg. He pawed at him. “Someone like sleeping in your room, too?” Maryanne teased, coming back down the hall.
Bruce jumped slightly. “Oh hey, sorry didn’t know you were still here. Yeah, we spoiled these pups.” He chuckled. “But who can say no to those faces.” He shrugged. “I try, but doesn’t always work.”
She laughed. “I’d struggle to say no, too.” She bent down to pet them. “Aren’t you the sweetest?”
Bruce smiled. “They are friendly.” He said as Lucky licked her face. “We wanted to keep them together since they’re brothers. I think they like that.”
“You’re so sweet for doing that.” She stood with a smile. “Can you lead me out? I didn’t realize it was getting dark.” She asked.
“Yeah, of course. The driveway lights up thankfully. Stay.” He told the two dogs before leading her out. “Thanks for coming over for a bit. I know Y/N likes your company.”
“She’s sweet, I can’t wait for our girls day.” She nodded, playing with her keys. “It’ll be nice to have someone to talk to that isn’t all about money.”
Bruce chuckled. “That’s why I love her. She doesn’t give a shit on what you make money wise.”
“Which means no expectations.” She nodded. “She’s good for you.”
“Thanks.” He opened her car door for her. “Have a safe drive back.” He said kindly.
She smiled and got in, waving. Once the car was started, she watched him head back inside. She hummed to herself and nodded. Pulling away, she looked forward to seeing you both again.
Tumblr media
Bruce checked on you a week later, patting your head with a towel. “I can stay, babe.”
You shook your head. “Just morning sickness.” You assured him. “I’ll be okay eventually.”
He kissed your cheek. “Alright, but I’ll race home if you need me to.” He told you. "I promise."
You nodded and closed your eyes. “Thank you.” You sighed. You knew you’d be in bed majority of the day. You planned to watch Netflix and cuddle your boys.
Bruce sighed in worry and finally left to work. He hoped that this let up soon. He’d hate for you to be miserable for your pregnancy. He decided to bring you home some flowers that night. And ask his mom for home remedies. Anything to help.
Tumblr media
For the next couple of weeks you felt sick majority of the morning but thankfully the afternoons were getting better. Alfred had sent you a tea that was helping. One evening, Bruce was working late, so you decided to bake Alfred some cookies. You took special time baking and decorating them, wanting the best for the man. He was family now.
You packaged them cutely and set them out to take to the man the following morning. You hoped he enjoyed them. You finally heard Bruce pull up and warmed up dinner for him. You wanted to try to make sure to have home made food most nights. Especially now for your little Wayne.
Bruce sighed as he came in, hanging up his coat. oat. "Hey, babe." He greeted you. “Smells good in here.” He pecked your lips. "How's our baby treating you?"
“Better this afternoon.” You smiled. “That tea is really helping.” You wrapped your arms around him. "How was work?"
“Busy today.” He nodded, kissing your forehead. "Couldn't wait to be home!" He hugged you tight. “Oh, cookies.” He worked up.
"Those are for Alfred." You told him.
He pouted. “None for your husband?” He asked.
“I can bake you your own after dinner.” You kissed his cheek.
He shook his head. “You need rest instead.” He squeezed your hip. “I don’t need cookies.” He shrugged.
You giggled. “Babe. I’m not that far along. I’m just getting a tad chubby. Resting is for when I’m huge and it hurts to walk.” You teased him. “How about you can help me make them?”
He rubbed your back. “Alright. And I just worry.” He said with a pout, nudging your cheek. “I’ll always worry.”
“You’re cute.” You kissed his jaw. “Now eat while I get things started.” You patted his chest. “I snacked while I cooked.”
He smiled and nodded, washing his hands before sitting at the counter. “I can’t wait to see what you made.”
You handed him his plate and soda, winking before going to pull your baking. “Hope you enjoy.” You said over your shoulder.
“Always.” He mumbled as he dug in. “So good.” He sighed happily.
You felt pride and hummed as you baked. The dogs yipped happily when they passed by and saw Bruce. “They missed their daddy.”
He smiled and pet them both as they jumped. “Hey boys.” He was glad that the pair of you got such happy dogs. They brightened everyone’s day.
Tumblr media
As the weeks passed, you became really close with Maryanne, and you were excited to tell her what you were having. She had been there by your side when you had rough mornings and she’d be the first person outside of Bruce to know. You’d be having dinner with his parents that night to tell them.
Maryanne was practically bouncing when you met up for lunch. “Tell me!” She beamed.
You grinned, just as excited. “A mini Bruce.” You said softly. She pulled you into a hug, which you eagerly returned.
“I’m so happy for you.” She squeezed you gently. “Motherhood fits you so well!” She said happily. “I can’t wait to see what you do for his nursery. Any names in mind?”
“No names yet.” You shook your head. “But I want to do something cute for his nursery.” You pulled up your phone to show her Pinterest ideas. “He’s off tomorrow, so I think we’re gonna get some stuff done.” You told her. “He’s gonna hire some painters before we set anything up.”
“Sounds wonderful.” She smiled. “His parents are going to be thrilled.” She told you. “He’s going to be a great dad!”
You nodded happily. “He is.” You sighed in content. “Tell me about your new job at the company?” You put your phone away as the pair of you made your way into the restaurant.
She sighed. “It’s nice. But it’s not something I want to do forever.” She admitted. “Not even close. I’m grateful for the job, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not what I went to school for.”
You nodded. “An in between job.” You stated. “At least you can find something while still making money.” You smiled. “It’ll help keep you busy.”
She smiled. “I’m constantly looking and sending resumes.” She admitted. “I’m hoping to be into my long term job soon.”
“It’ll fall right into your lap I’m sure.” You encouraged. “I’m doing free lance work for now, and I’ll go back to work, like actual work, once he’s probably about a year.” You wanted time with your son, and felt that was a good time frame.
She nodded. “That sounds great.” She smiled. “Is Bruce taking time off?”
“I think he’s trying to work out his schedule next year.” You nodded. “I know he gets leave, so I’m thankful for that.”
“Oh, yes.” She nodded. “That’s so great.” She agreed. “How long will he get?” She was curious.
“I think 9 months. He’s just trying to figure out which 9 he wants probably.” You nodded. “Which, as long as he’s home the first couple weeks, I don’t care how he works out the rest.” You chuckled.
“I’m sure he’ll make that happen.” She chuckled. “There’s no way he would miss out on such an important time.”
“True.” You smiled and got ready to order.
Tumblr media
Bruce was running late that night, so he texted you not to make dinner. He said he would eat at the office. You were glad you had the dogs company and figured he was building up time to take off. You were asleep on the couch when he came in.
He carefully lifted you and carried you up before tucking you in. “Night.” He whispered. He would shower and join you shortly. He checked his phone as he plugged it in to charge and cursed. He had forgotten you had dinner with his parents that evening. However, his father hadn't said anything, either. He wondered if you had cancelled for the both of you. Sighing, he quickly went about getting ready for bed before joining you.
You snuggled to him automatically in your sleep. He kissed the top of your head, holding you close.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Bruce didn’t have to work late a lot, but you missed him when he did. He was your world and it sucked not having your best friend around all the time. You got to hang out with Maryanne a lot, too, but it wasn’t the same.
The nursery was painted a baby blue by the time you were 22 weeks, and he had put together his furniture not long after. You had filled it with baby books and stuffies, excited for your little boy to grow into it. You hadn’t gotten his bedding yet, and hoped that Bruce would like to do that the following weekend.
He had recently picked up more hours so he left earlier in the day and came later in the evenings, but you were making it work. You tried every night to stay up for him, and half succeeded finally. Your eyes were drooping as he opened the door.
“Hey.” He smiled. “I’m gonna jump in the shower real quick and be with you in a minute.” He told you. “Then we can cuddle and get some rest.”
You nodded sleepily and hugged his pillow. You planned to ask him to take it easy the following week. You’d like some time with him where he didn’t have any obligations. You didn’t want him to burn himself out.
Bruce emerged from the shower eventually and crawled into bed with you. “There’s my wife.” He beamed.
“Hi.” You said tiredly. “Glad I got to see you at least.” You gave him a soft smile. “I miss you.”
“I’m sorry, baby. I miss you, too.” He hugged you. “I’m here now, okay?”
You nodded. “Be here more next week? Take a little break.” You asked softly. “Please? Spend some time with me and the boys?”
He thought for a moment. “I’ll see what I can do.” He promised. “I’d love more time with my growing family.” He pecked your nose. “I’ll let you know tomorrow, okay?”
“You’re the best.” You beamed. "I love you. Pancakes for breakfast?" You offered.
“Sounds great.” He kissed you gently. "Now let's get some sleep, Mrs. Wayne."
You nuzzled into his neck and fell asleep almost instantly. He comforted you, and made you feel safe.
Bruce held you all night, getting rest himself. He really would do everything to be with you more.
Tumblr media
The next morning, Bruce went in later than usual, getting to actually enjoy the morning with you. It helped your mood drastically. "Can I come join you for lunch?" You asked as he got ready for work. "I can pack us something."
He hummed. “Maybe tomorrow? I have a staff meeting today I think.” He gave you a 'sorry' face. "Then I can plan it so no one bothers us, too."
“Alright.” You pouted. “I guess I’m grateful for breakfast at least.” You knew you had to get used to this. He didn't have a set schedule like most husbands would. “Maybe I’ll ask if Maryanne is free.” You hated being alone these days.
"Think she has to work, but I'll try to get her off early and send her over." He kissed your cheek.
“Thank you.” You smiled as he crouched to say bye to your son. You ran your fingers through his hair gently, enjoying the moment
He kissed your bump. “Take care of your mother.” He smiled as he stood. “I’ll text you when I can.” He promised, kissing you. "And I'll bring home dinner. Don't cook."
You smiled. “Can I pretty please have pasta from my favorite place?” You asked sweetly.
Bruce chuckled. "If that what my wife wants, that's what she'll get."
You grinned. “Thank you.” You kissed him once more before he left, leaving you with the boys. You sighed. “You and me again boys.” You told them. "Wanna go for a walk?"
They were always up for anything and looked at you excitedly. Happy barked, heading towards the door, tail wagging. You giggled and led Lucky to follow him, hooking up their leashes. At least you'd get your exercise. You hoped Maryanne could stop by today.
Tumblr media
Bruce and Maryanne came at the same time, surprising you. “Hi!” You said after a moment. “What a surprise!” You smiled. "Joining us for dinner?"
“If you don’t mind! I ran into this one in the parking lot.” She smiled. “Said you might need company.” She told you. "We stopped and got dinner."
You looked at Bruce. "The pasta?" You asked, hopeful.
“The pasta.” He nodded with a smile, chuckling when you clapped. "Let's go eat, I'm sure you've been looking forward to this all day."
“I have.” You said honestly, going to set up. "Beer, babe?"
“Sure.” He smiled and unpacked. "How was your day?"
“Long.” You admitted. “Looking forward to the cool weather. I find myself overheating now.” You sighed. "And it's only the start of the hot weather."
Maryanne pouted. “I can look up remedies.” She offered. “I’m sure there are some.”
You smiled thankfully at her. “I did that earlier.” You admitted. “Tank tops, shorts, fans, ice water, and ACs.”
“Anything a big credit card limit can buy?” Bruce smiled. “Because I’ll buy it all.”
You smirked. “Buy me an igloo for when you’re at work.” You teased.
“Don’t tempt him.” Maryanne chuckled. “He will try.” She looked at him.
He smirked. “I will. I’ll find something.” He promised. “Now, let’s eat.” He pulled out a chair for you before sitting down himself.
You smiled happily, loving the company.
Tumblr media
Bruce walked Maryanne out to her car while you showered, looking forward to getting to spend the evening with him. You had plans as you shaved and put your nicest smelling products on. Getting out, you dried off and slipped only your silk robe on. You sat on the bed in what you hoped was a nice pose and waited. He shouldn't have been taking all that long. You pouted and got a bit restless, getting up to call Lucky or Happy. “Check on your daddy? Go outside.” You gently told them, happy they were somewhat trained. They both ran out once you cracked the door, nearly tackling him.
“I’m here, I’m here.” Bruce chuckled, smiling as he saw you. “A light went off in her car and I had to pretend to know what I was doing.” He explained.
You bit your lip, wondering if he just spaced on what you were wearing. “Oh...okay.” You shrugged. You played with the hem of your robe, feeling self-conscious.
He kissed your head. “Let me shower and I’ll be right back.” He squeezed your back side.
“Kay.” You said softly, looking down at yourself and shrugging as he walked away. You’d change into a t-shirt while he showered.
Bruce raised his eyebrows as you were under the covers but quickly got under with you. “Said I’d be right back.” He pulled you close.
You shrugged. “It’s okay.” You mumbled. You put your hand on his, getting comfortable.
“I just wanted to make sure I was clean for you.” He kissed your neck. “Especially with how you looked.”
“You didn’t say anything…” You shrugged again. “Figured you didn’t notice.”
“You think I didn’t notice my wife all sexy’d up for me?” He nipped your neck. “Wearing nothing but that robe?” He groaned. “I had to run to the shower before I took you right there.” He told you. “You looked so clean, I had to be, too, babe.”
“Alright, alright. Sweet talker.” You turned to face him. You pecked his lips softly.
He smiled against you, taking it as a win. He would take all night proving to you he had seen how you were looking.
It didn’t take long for you to forgive him.
Tumblr media
Walking into Wayne Enterprises at nearly 32 weeks pregnant, you smiled as people waved to you. Specific people you always met with cake to ask how you were. “I’ll let Bruce know you’re here, or is it a surprise?” One of the interns asked with a smile.
You chuckled. “Surprise.” You told them, holding up a cooler. “I made him his favorite lunch.”
A few people ‘awe’d’ and let you pass. “How sweet.” They whispered.
On the way up to his floor on the elevator, your hand was on your stomach as your son moved. He was active today, making you smile. “Just not the bladder okay?” You giggled. “Let mommy have lunch with Daddy.” When he kicked a different spot, you laughed. Finally the doors opened to his floor and you eagerly went to his office. He wasn’t there, confusing you, so you went back out to his secretary. “Tiffany, is Bruce in a meeting?”
She hummed. “No, he shouldn’t be.” She clicked around on the computer. “Nope. Want me to page him?”
“Please?” You went and sat in his office to wait for him. You looked around, appreciating how you could tell it was his area. Your wedding picture sat on his desk, right next to one of him holding your bump. You beamed and figured you could leave him a cute note to find. You’d wait a few minutes, and if he didn’t show up, you’d leave a note, and his lunch. However, you weren’t sure where he’d be.
Tiffany came in. “He said he could here in twenty? He’s out of the building.” She told you gently.
It was odd that it was phrased as a question. “No, I’ll leave this here, I guess.”
“Alright, I’m sorry you missed him.” She said with a sad look. “It was nice to see you, though.” She said sweetly. “He brags about you all the time.”
You felt a bit better at that. “Thanks. I should call next time.” You shrugged a shoulder. “How’s the family been?” You asked, scribbling him a note.
“Good, thank you.” She beamed. “All good.” She told you.
Tumblr media
Bruce missed you by five minutes by the time he got back into his office. He groaned, feeling guilty as he saw the lunch. Picking up the note, he read it.
Wanted to surprise you with your favorite lunch, but you were out. I hope it’s still warm whenever you get back in!
Love you.
He pouted and called you, hoping he’d find you.
"Hey, Bruce." You answered. "I just left to get myself lunch."
He whined. “I’m sorry, baby. I was off site.” He told you.
"I know." You half teased. "Tiffany seemed surprised."
“It was a last minute meet up with a potential donor.” He explained. "I didn't have time to stop and explain." He told you, sitting behind his desk.
“It’s okay. I should’ve called. Surprises aren’t your thing.” You said gently. "I'll visit again soon. I have my appointment next week, so maybe I'll stop in after."
“An appointment? Shouldn’t I be at that?” He asked. "What time?"
"It's just a quick monthly one." You told him. "Just to check how I'm doing, check on him, who needs a name, and that's it."
“I should be there. What time?” His voice had grown a bit irritated.
You furrowed your brows. "10. But why are you getting upset with me?"
“I just feel I should be at every appointment no matter what its for. Were you going to tell me?”
"I told you when I made it." You told him. “It’s written on the calendar at home. Don’t get mad at me when it slipped your mind.” You countered. "I keep you up to date on all things baby."
He rubbed his face. “I need to meet with Tiffany so it can show up on my phone.” He sighed. "I want to be there by your side."
“Yeah, if you can make time.” You told him.
"What's that mean?"
"...when's the last time you were home for dinner?" You asked softly.
“Just the other day.” He said easily.
“On time. Where I don’t have to reheat it or keep it in the oven.” You sighed. “And I know it’s only going to get worse.” You licked your lips. "I'm not mad at you, but I also don't want you saying you'll be there and not being able to."
Bruce frowned and rubbed his forehead. “I’ll make time, okay?” He didn't want to turn into his father.
“Yeah, okay.” You said softly. "I'll let you eat your lunch. I'm at the pizza place I was looking for."
“Eat well.” He said sadly. “I love you.”
"I love you, too." You said gently. "Weekend together? Just us and the boys?" You asked, hopeful.
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll make it happen.” He promised.
After hanging up, he sat back in his chair and sighed. He had to make things better. Your son would be coming soon and he had to prepare to take time off.

In my universe, Earth-18104, the X-Men had three schools in different times, the Xavier Mansion changed names every time a new "era" started, according to the story and the events of that time.
The story of the Xavier Institute is based in the comics and influenced by other events of this universe, that are based in other medias like the movies and comics, and don't follow the time-line of the comics in a precise way, because I wanted to give this universe a more real feeling of time passing slowly and the characters aging different from each generation.
So... yeah, some characters are older or younger than they are in the comics.
Here are some of the students that were enrolled in each school. And here the list of other groups of young superheroes.
• Xavier Institute for Gifted Young People (1972 - 1999)
The first school, of course, when Xavier still had to keep his and his students' identities a secret. People believed it was just a private school, even thought it had only a very few students, at first.
The first students were the original X-Men of 1972, trained by Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Mastermind, Moira MacTaggert and Destiny (based on the movie X-Men First Class):
• Armando Muñoz / Darwin (16)
• Suzanne Chan / Sway (17)
• Vienna Adamsen / Petra (16)
• Sean Cassidy / Banshee (20)
They later all went to Muir Island to train with Moira, after Xavier suffered the injury that let him paralyzed.
In 1989, Xavier trained the second X-Men, the Original Five or X-Men '92:
• Jean Grey / Marvel Girl (17)
• Scott Summers / Cyclops (16)
• Bobby Drake / Iceman (15)
• Warren Worthington III / Angel (17)
• Henry McCoy / Beast (18)
Later in 1995, Lorna Dane / Polaris (20) and Alex Summers / Havok (17) joined the team.
At the same time, Moira had her own team if X-Men in Muir Island, trained by Petra, Sway and Darwin:
• Christopher Bradley / Bolt (14)
• Gabriel Summers / Vulcan (13)
• James Madrox / Multiple (16)
• David Haller (17/18)
In 1996 Kitty Pryde / Sprite (13), Alison Blaire / Dazzler (16), Gailyn and Joseph Grey / Shatter-Box (10) joined the school. And in 1997, it was Rogue (17) and Ruth Aldine / Blindfold (17).
*Shatterbox are minor characters in the comics. Blindfold is older than her counterpart in the comics, and acts as a mentor and counselor to the next students.
In 1997/1999, the Xavier Institute was turned into a real school, and thought he did not wanted to put more children in danger, Xavier created a new team of X-Men, the New Mutants:
• Illyana Rasputin / Magik (13)
• Xuân Cao Manh / Karma (15)
• Danielle Moonstar / Mirage (16)
• Sam Guthrie / Cannonball (16)
• Roberto da Costa / Sunspot (15)
• Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane (15)
• Amara Aquilla / Magma (15)
• James Proudstar / Warpath (14)
• Douglas Ramsey / Cypher (12)
• Warlock
* Illyana Rasputin was 6 years old before joined, however, after her time in the Limbo, she came back to her world as a 13 years old teenager. James Proudstar was brought to the school by his older brother after leaving the Hellions. And Jonh Proudstar never fucking died.
In 1999, Banshee and Emma Frost took care of a new class of mutants, the Generation X:
• Paige Guthrie / Husk (17)
• Angelo Spinosa / Skin (16)
• Jubilee (17)
• Monet St. Croix / Penance (17)
• Claudette and Nicole St. Croix / M (9)
• Jonothon "Jono" Starsmore / Chamber (18)
• Everett Thomas / Synch (17)
These kids were gathered and chosen as X-Men after being rescued from the Phalanx, however Clarice Ferguson / Blink (14) was lost after destroying the enemy and was only found years later. Not by the X-Men.
In 2000/2001, Apocalypse was awaken from his slumber and the X-Men fought against him and his Horsemen. In 2004, the Infinity Gaulent arc happened, and half of the universe was gone (Like in Avengers: Endgame), and only restaured in 2010.
The people turned to dust in this break of time didn't aged.
• Xavier Institute for Higher Education / Xavier Academy (1997 - 2004) and (2010 - 2017)
After these events, the Xavier Institute changed names again. Xavier, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Hank McCoy, Logan and Scott Summers were the ones in charge.
The mansion was had more of a structure to resemble a real school, and even had a student body, more classes, etc.
In school year of 2011/2012 (September to june) the events of E is for Extinction and Riot at Xavier's took place. The students at the time were:
• Angel Salvadore / Tempest (15)
• Barnell Borhuk / Beak (15)
• Glob Herman
• Sophie, Phoebe, Irma, Celeste and Esme Cuckoo / The Stepford Cuckoos (14)
• Jebediah "Jeb" Guthrie (12)
• Melody Guthrie / Aero (15)
• Vincent Stewart / Redneck (15)
• Christian and Christine Cord / Radian and Tattoo (15)
• Quentin Quire / Kid Omega (14)
• Hong Liange (11)
• Lucy Priest / Butterfly (16)
• Carlo Brewster / Gelatin (14)
• Abraham Verne / Caput (15)
• Dana Holmes / Polymer (15)
• Alisa Tager / Cipher (11)
• Ellie Phimister / Negasonic Teenage Warhead (12)
• Kutsuna Yukio (12)
• Gabrielle and Michael Diwa / Galura and Arauto (13)
• Dean Boswell / Dummy (15)
• Martha Johansson (9)
• Ernst (10)
• Hisako Ichiki / Armor (13)
• Edward Tancredi / Wing (12)
• Quincy Marrow (14)
• Stan Finch / Silicon (14)
• Leong Cao Mạnh (11)
• Nga Cao Mạnh (11)
*Kutsuna Yukio is the version of Yukio from Deapool 2; The Stepford Cuckoos are only three years old chronologically, but aged faster, so they are 14 years old physically and mentally. Quentin Quire had just turned fourteen and lost his body, being stuck in his astral form, he couldn't age and stayed in this form for the next six years
*For the love of God, Beak and Angel didn't fucking had children. What the fuck these writers had in mind???? They're teenagers. Jeb and Melody Guthrie should be older, but they were among the victims of Infinity Gaulent.
During 2013/2014, the events of Academy X, New X-Men, and Young X-Men in 2015 took place. During this time, we had the events of M-Day, Civil War and the Stryke's attack took place.
• Jay Guthrie / Icarus; Dallas Gibson / Specter; Callie Betto / Dryad; Sofia Mantega / Wind Dancer; Phoebe, Irma and Celeste Cuckoo / The Stepford Cuckoos (16)

• Ernst; Roxy Washington / Bling!; Martha Johansson; Nick Gleason / Wolf Cub; Hope Abott / Trance; Carl Aalston / Rain Boy (11)
Like in the comics, some of these characters lost their powers and died, with a few exception surviving and leaving the role as X-Men. The few that survived and kept their powers after M-Day stayed and then later moved to Utopia/Genosha.
After this, the Xavier Institute was destroyed and the Graymalkin Lane was left empty until 2018. In 2017, with the return of Hope Summers, a new group of X-Men was formed in Utopia, the Lights, though they did not resided at the Institute.
• Hope Summers (15)
• Gabriel Cohuelo / Velocidad (16)
• Laurie Tromette / Transonic (17)
• Teon Savko / Primal (15)
• Idie Okonkwo / Oya (13)
• Kenji Uedo (19)
Hope Summers was born just a few years before the Lights, but since she was raised in the future she is 14 years old when she comes back. Later, Megan Gwynn / Pixie (16) joined the team, taking Oya's place.
After the Schim caused, the X-Men split in two. Quentin Quire had returned in a new body, but he was still 14 years old, the same age he was when he "died"
• Jean Gray School for Higher Learning (2018- )
In 2018, Wolverine went back to Westchester and rebuilt the mansion, trying to give the place the feeling of real school. The students also could only start training when they were in 9° grade and could train to be X-Men and join teams (like in Academy X) after they were in 10° grade.
He made a deal with the Shi'ar to have technology to protect the school, as long he accepted the son of Gladiator, asked to be Quentin's guardian and they had a clone of Krakoa as they grounds.
A few old students joined the school in the first year, and a few only in the second and third year. The school opened in August of 2018.
(This list of students include some of my OCs, since I'm writing a fanfic that happens in the Jean Grey School)
• Hisako Ichiki / Armor; Julian Keller / Hellion; Gabrielle and Michael Diwa / Galura and Arauto (19)
• Cecily Kincaid / Mercury; Santo Vacarro / Rockslide: Kutsuna Yukio; Ellie Phimister / NTW; Noriko Ashida / Surge; Eric Gitter / Ink (18)
• Alisa Tager / Cipher; Hong Liange; Paras Gavaskar / Indra; Nezhno ABidemi / Gentle (17)
• Cam Long / Tiger; Aura Charles / Aurora; Crosta (16)
• Ben Hamill / Match; Victor Borkowski / Anole; Iara dos Santos / Shark Girl; Roxy Washington / Bling!; Martha Johansson / Cerebela; Zane Yamaguchi / Juggernaut 2; Hope Abott / Trance; Carl Aalston / Rain Boy (15)
• Idie Okonkwo / Oya; Prince Kubark / Gladiator; Trevor Hawkins / Eye-Kid; Charge OC; Julian Creed / Menace OC (14)
• Evan Adel / Genesis; Jiang Mei, Sprite (13/14); Hunter Creed / Rescue OC (12/13); Broo
*Broo is only five months old, Evan is a clone so he aged faster than the Cuckoos, chronologically he was "born" a few months before being enrolled. The school was never moved to Manhattan like in the comics.
Later, Huang Lin / Nature Kid; Michela Ladak; Joseph and Josephine Bricklemoore / Tri-Joe and Squid Girl joined the school.
Even after the death of Wolverine in 2021 and the creation of Krakoland in 2023, the school stayed open, and the X-Men hope it stays this way for many years.

Nicole was one of the cutest babies around and she wasn’t saying that because she was her daughter, but because some of the other wives and husbands that were at the base said so. There was something about those jade colored eyes and cherub like cheeks, her hair pulled up into two full pigtails atop of her head making her look like a little doll.
She was looking around the base by whipping her head back and forth, now that she could hold it up it opened a whole realm of possibilities for her. Beatrice just smiled, kissing her head as she adjusted the hold on Nicole. While she did bring her stroller, she chose to carry Nicole inside just so Rooster could see her.
“Are you excited to see daddy?” Beatrice asks, bouncing her little girl, “Yaaay, daddy is coming home!” Nicole just babbles something and gurgles a laugh, “Yeah,I know, honey.”
Thankfully the sun wasn’t so painfully hot that day which meant she put some sunscreen on Nicole and had a hat in case there was need for more protection in her back pocket and she could look around without her sunglasses. She didn’t seem to notice the woman looking over at her until she stepped closer, “Hi,” Beatrice blinked in the woman’s direction, “I remember you, Beatrice, right?”
“...yes,that’s me.”
“Oh,I’m sorry,I’m Lydia.” the woman smiles, then looks down at the little boy next to her, “And this is Tommy.” the boy squeaked out a shy ‘hello’ “I’m sorry if this seems random but I remember you from…a few years back? You are Rooster’s wife, right?”
She didn’t want to flinch at the casual way she said her husband’s callsign but she remembered that it was possible this woman’s partner knew Rooster, “Yeah,I am.”
“And who is this?” Nicole just blinks at her, “Your baby girl?”
“Ah,yeah, this is Nicole.” Beatrice smiles, swiping some strands of hair away from her daughter’s face, “She’s our daughter.”
“She’s really cute.” Lydia says, “I’m waiting for my husband, Thomas. He and Rooster know each other.”
“Ah I see,” Rooster never mentioned Thomas before and Beatrice kept that in the back of her mind for now, “You can stay here if you want, if it helps you–”
“No,no! No,I just wanted to greet you and compliment your baby girl.” a hand touches Beatrice’s arm, “Congratulations.”
Beatrice could only watch the woman walk away, furrowing her brows at this strange interaction with a woman that somehow knew her name and whose husband knew Bradley but he never told her about him, “...weird.” she mutters, looking down at Nikki and seeing her stinky eye expression to the woman who just walked away, “Nikki, you are being too obvious.” she laughs, gently brushing her thumb over her furrowed brows, booping her nose after she was done just so her daughter smiled.
“Now we wait for daddy.” she explains, “And auntie Phoenix and uncle Payback too.”
Nicole babbles something in response, but leans back against Beatrice’s arm as they wait for Rooster. Her mother fixes the flowery shirt she put on Nicole with a small grin, proud of the outfit she chose and waiting excitedly for Rooster to finally see their daughter.
It doesn’t take too long for the roar of engines to echo in the sky, the noise not even fazing Nicole who just looked up with interest instead of crying in surprise. While it wasn’t loud, it was amazing to see how unafraid Nicole was of outside noise, she was just curious.
So they waited for a little bit, Beatrice bouncing Nicole in her arms while humming Shot in the Dark by Ozzy Osborne, another song that Nicole heard while inside Beatrice and now was considered her own heavy metal lullaby.
Nicole’s green eyes moved about a bit, several pilots were making their way over to their families, - including Thomas who just approached Lydia and gave her a kiss, but Beatrice still couldn’t say how he knew Rooster - and two of them caught Beatrice's attention.
Payback noticed Nicole first and laughed, “Oh my God, that’s so cute!” he makes his way over with Phoenix not far behind, “Hi Nikki! I love your outfit! You look so nice!” Nicole smiled up at him, reaching for his finger as he held up to her face, “Rooster is going to love it,Bea.”
‘Thank you,” the brunette says, “Is he far behind?”
Phoenix looks past her shoulder to where the young Bradshaw was, “No, he’ll be here in a jiffy.” she said, cooing at Nicole for a few more seconds, “But we gotta go too, nice to see you Bea!”
“Nice seeing you guys too!” she calls, hugging them goodbye and watching them until they disappear from her vision. Beatrice looks forward again and this time, she sees a very tall and handsome pilot in the distance.
He is checking something in his suit, his head is bowed so he hadn’t seen her yet but Beatrice took all that time to admire her husband in all of his over 6” glory. Beatrice bit her lower lip, trying to keep herself from moving and running over to him or else she’d ruin the surprise, “Look Nikki.” she whispers, lifting her baby just a bit, “It’s daddy!”
Nicole looks ahead, eyes moving a bit as she tries to find what Beatrice was talking about. It takes a few seconds but Nicole eventually sees her father and once she does, she starts babbling loudly, wriggling a bit on Beatrice’s arms and even trying to reach the distant image of Rooster, “I know, honey! Yeah it’s daddy! He’s home!”
He is home.
She closed her eyes, thanking whoever was responsible for bringing him home safely in her mind, her shoulders relaxing with a small smile spreading over her lips, “Finally.”
After a while, Rooster finally looks up when he hears the constant and repetitive blabber coming from a baby. Since most of the kids around were older, it was easy to pinpoint that the talkative one was nicole.
So he looks up, sees Beatrice and a smiling Nicole in her arms…and his eyes narrow. “What the?” he is too far to see it right so he speeds his steps to get closer. And the closer he gets, the sharper his vision is and he finally can figure out what he sees, “Oh my God.” he couldn’t help but laugh, and when he laughs he throws his head back and then had to hold himself up by putting his hands on his knees with the constant chuckling.
Beatrice is close enough that he can hear her own giggles, “Did you like it?”
“Oh…fuck…” he snorts, standing upright to wipe his eyes under the sunglasses, looking back to where they were so he could walk up to them, “This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Because Nicole was wearing an outfit almost identical to Rooster’s.
With a white tee, a tiny Hawaiian shirt - with coconut trees and in the same shade of yellow from one of his favorite ones - and jeans shorts. Nicole gurgled a laugh, a high pitched noise coming out of her throat as her father got closer, “What’s this, missy?” he playfully scolds her, dropping his bag and propping his hands on his hips,”What’s this? I thought I was the fashionable one in the family.”
Nicole giggled again, reaching out for him and he couldn’t stop himself from picking her up, “Oh you look so cute.” he coos, kissing her cheeks once he’s holding her, “You are so precious, oh my gosh, yes you are!” Nicole touches his face, running her small hands over his mustache  and then reaches for his sunglasses, “What? You want them, Birdie?” he wastes no time in putting them over her own eyes.
Nicole stills, the glasses are crooked and he has to hold them with one hand because they were adult size after all. Nicole just makes a noise again, touching the lens almost trying to adjust them over her eyes as Rooster smiles down at her, “This is so cute,” he says, pinching the colorful fabric of her outershirt, “She wears it well.”
“She got it from her daddy.”
Rooster snorts, looking up to meet Beatrice’s smiling face, approaching her to kiss her lips briefly. He breaks the kiss but keeps his lips above hers, “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You look really good as well.”
Beatrice laughs against his mouth, kissing him again as Nicole keeps her hands occupied with the sunglasses, not paying attention to what’s happening around her, “I wanted to surprise you.” she whispers, “And I know you love this dress.”
It was the white summer dress with the small yellow flowers from Phoenix’s barbecue, that dress that just made him almost drop to his knees and stay there because of how cute she looked, “I do love it.” he replies, “Even more when you wear it.” he steps back just to check on their daughter who had now grabbed the sunglasses’ legs and was trying to bite the ends, “No,no, Nikki. No biting.” she makes a sound of displeasure when he grabs the sunglasses again, “How did you pull this off?”
“Hm?”
“What do you mean, hm? This,” he gestures to their daughter’s outfit, “How did you pull this off?”
“Well,” she drawls, walking alongside him as he keeps Nicole tucked into one arm and the other leans down to pick up his back, settling the strap on his shoulder, “I just had to check the tag in your shirt…then I asked for a similar shirt and took to Marcus who was kind enough to make that for Nicole.”
That makes sense.
Rooster just looked down at Nicole who was trying to get the sunglasses again, he just leaned his head down to kiss her cheek one more time, earning a giggle from their daughter “I love it,” he says, “She looks great like this.”
“I thought you’d like the surprise.”
“I do.” he smiles, kissing Beatrice’s head this time, “I gotta change though, can you wait for me?”
“Always.”
Rooster’s heart shuddered over that simple sentence, gently handing Nicole over to her mother, “Good,” he says, cupping her chin to kiss her one more time, “I’ll be right back, you won’t even miss me too much.” he winks at her, backing away from his girls to change while Beatrice smiled, watching him walk away and fighting hard to not drop her eyes to the perfect way that suit hugged his ass.
“No,” she chastises herself, “There’s still time…when we get home.” she whispers to herself, thanking that it was her day off and she wouldn’t have to worry about doing anything in a hurry once they left the base. Nicole tilted her head to see where her father went, letting out a gentle cry when he was nowhere to be found, “Baby, no it’s okay, he’ll be back soon.” Bea says, kissing her soft brown locks and shushing her the best she could, “And then we’ll go home.”
Nicole just hums, still looking to where Rooster went with her big green eyes wide and focused on the very spot he disappeared. Beatrice chuckles down at Nikki, leaning to kiss her soft cheek just like Rooster did as they waited.
Lydia and Thomas walked out of the base, the woman waving at her and Bea waved back, still confused as to how they knew Rooster when he never mentioned them before.
Beatrice watched them disappear in a black car, eyebrows still furrowed and Nicole giving them the stinky eye, only looking away when she feels his lips on the side of her neck “Hmmm, you are smelling so good,” he coos, spinning the car keys on his index finger, “Did you bring the foldable car seat?”
“I did,” she nods to her bag, “The other one was in the jeep so,”
“Yeah, come on Nikki! Time to go home!”
-
The drive home was uneventful, she noticed he looked tired and probably just wanted to lie on the bed and nap by the way he was looking. His hand did stay on her bare thigh, rubbing the flesh up and down as he drove, their chatting only staying within the realm of daily occurrences from both their sides.
When they got home, however - and after the dogs cried and greeted him -, Beatrice asked him about Lydia and Thomas and his response was “Who?”
“Lydia and Thomas.” she repeats, changing arms while holding Nikki, “She said her husband knows you.”
The glass with water tilted to his lips and he drank slowly, his eyes moving away in thought and once he was done he let out a “Ah, Anaheim.” he says, “That’s his callsign. I never heard anyone call him Thomas.”
Oh that makes sense, “Ah, okay…it’s just, well,I never saw him at the bar.”
“You wouldn't, he’s a bit…” he chooses his words carefully, “He doesn’t like drinking or people who drink, which is fine but that also makes him a bit antisocial and not everyone likes him for that.”
“Oh.”
“Or his wife.” he adds, “She…didn’t say anything to you,did she?”
“...no…should I be worried?”
Rooster licked his lips after setting the glass down, “She is…uh…how do I say this, she’s that type of military wife that makes it her personality.” he says while leaning against the counter, “While you are kind, sweet and talented…Lydia is just very intense about her role as a Navy wife and a stay at home mom.”
“She doesn’t seem that bad? She was really nice to me…she did know my name and all.”
“Anaheim probably told her about you because, apparently, I never shut up when it comes to you.” he smirks, crossing his arms over his chest, “And am I to be blamed?”
Beatrice rolled her eyes playfully, walking closer to Rooster when Nicole started blabbering and reaching for him, “No.” she says as her husband picks Nicole up, kissing her soft cheeks soundly over and over just to hear her laughter, “You just never mentioned him before…or anyone else did for that matter.”
With his lips sputtering against Nicole’s cheeks, making their daughter laugh gleefully, he looks back at Beatrice, “Baby, honestly,Thomas is…a cool guy but he just likes other things…I don’t know why exactly Lydia suddenly came up to you but,” he makes a funny face to Nicole who parts her mouth and kicks her legs excitedly, “But she might be scoping new moms for a book club or whatever.”
‘She has a book club?”
“I have no idea.” he responds, kissing Nicole’s forehead and placing her on his chest, her soft cheek resting on the curve of his shoulder, “Wouldn’t put past her…are you sleepy Birdie? Hm?” Nicole holds the collar of his shirt as her eyes blink heavily, “Has she been awake long?”
“Not longer than usual.” Beatrice explains, “She probably got excited when she saw you.”
“Hm.” Rooster smiles, kissing her head one more time, “I can tuck her in if you want, I wouldn’t mind.” He just wanted to hold her a little bit longer, “My sweet girl, look how big you are already.”
‘The doctor said she’s the picture of health,” Beatrice grins, “And that she is very active at four months old, especially because of the hand to mouth movement she does when she’s hungry.” Beatrice places her hand on Nicole’s back, brushing over the fabric of the small Hawaiian gently, feeling the slow rise and fall of her breathing, “So she’s completely fine.”
“Was she fine when I was gone?”
Beatrice hesitates, still touching her daughter’s back, “We both missed you.” was her response with a small smile, “A lot…but she got used to it after a while. After the last video call though…it was a bit sad to see her trying to grab your face through the black screen.”
Rooster frowned a bit, looking down at his dozing off daughter, “Yeah,I can imagine…but I’m home now, birdie.” he coos,”I’m going to tuck her in, she’s already partially asleep.”
“Okay,” Bea smiles, “I’ll prepare our lunch.”
“I can come back down and help you.” he says as he steps around Jack who just wags his tail at him, “I won’t take long.”
“Roos, it’s okay, take as long as you need.” Beatrice smiles, “I’ll be here when you return.”
Rooster gave her a thankful grin before he walked up the stairs humming Great Balls of Fire, in a much slower pace of course, just so Nicole could finally close her eyes and snuggle close to his shirt.
He smiles down at her, hearing the dogs patting around downstairs, the birds outside and Beatrice’s voice gently singing a song. He was so glad to be home.

Kyle's Accident
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bruce x Reader Word count: 2,194 A/N: Okay, so I know that part of this one doesn't make complete sense with a previous chapter. I couldn't really figure out how to fix it once I noticed, and no one is really reading this anyway, so it's whatever.
Read on AO3
Part 9 of Without Me
Tumblr media
Later on, after your shower, the pair of you held each other close that night. “I hadn’t told my parents yet about the promise ring, just in case they ask.” Bruce said gently.
You nodded. “Obviously I hadn’t told mine, either.” You teased in return.
He let out a breath. “True.” He chuckled. “They’ll just know I’m serious when they find out.” He wrapped his arm around your shoulder and kissed your temple.
“Me, too.” You squeezed him. “Think they’ll like each other?” You asked, trying to picture all four parents in the same room.
“No clue.” He laughed. “Guess we just have to wait and see.”
You grinned. “I can’t wait.” You giggled.
He kissed your nose. “Me either. It’ll be our families together and that means a shit ton.”
Tumblr media
Finally, his parents were on their way. Nicole was sitting by you as you waited while Bruce chatted with your brother. You couldn't stop smiling as you watched them together. With that, you didn’t notice Nicole watching them with the same fondness. Her heart warmed at the sight. Maybe Bruce wasn't so bad after all.
You stood up quickly when the door the door rang, eager to greet them. “Hello, Martha.” you hugged her gently.
“Hello, sweetheart.” She smiled brightly. “I love the area you grew up in. It seems so peaceful.”
You beamed. “I’m glad.” You motioned inside. “Welcome to this crazy house.” You giggled. “Bruce is playing with my younger brother, Noah. Good luck getting his attention.”
She smiled. “I can’t wait to see that.” She stepped in quickly. “I always wanted to give him a sibling, but it just wasn't meant to be.”
“He’s great with him.” You assured happily.
“Hello, Bruce!” Thomas chuckled, making your boyfriend jump.
“Jeez, Dad.” He placed a hand on his chest before standing. He smiled at his parents. “How was your drive?”
“Wonderful. We hadn’t been this way in quite some time.” Martha grinned. “Who is this lovely young lady?” She asked, motioning to Nicole.
Nicole stood and smiled instantly. “I’m Nicole, her sister.” She held out her hand. “It's nice to meet you.”
“Such pretty genetics in this family.” Martha praised. She noted how Nicole blushed. “Clearly with such beautiful parents.” She went to greet them excitedly.
You chuckled as his parents instantly befriended yours. You moved to wrap your arms around his waist, kissing his shoulder.
He rubbed your arms affectionately and grinned at the big hugs that were shared. He chuckled with he heard your mother’s voice. “Did you help Bruce pick out her ring? It’s beautiful!”
“Ring?” Thomas asked, glancing to you. “Are we getting a new daughter?” He asked.
Bruce was surprised at how calm he sounded at that. “Ah. Not yet, I guess. It’s a promise ring.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “That’s all.”
“Bruce!” Martha beamed. “So sweet!” She teared up. “Let me see what our boy gave you.”
You went over to her shyly, with a smile and your hand out. “I love it.” You told her. “I had only sent him out for food.” You chuckled.
“I didn’t know he was a romantic.” Thomas chuckled. “I guess the right woman will bring it out in any man.”
“Heck yeah.” Bruce agreed with a beam. “She's stuck with me.”
“Proudly.” You nodded. Kissing his cheek, you gave him a squeeze.
All four of your parents beamed at the two of you. “Can you come back to playing, Bruce?” Your brother asked sweetly.
Bruce grinned at your brother. “Sure thing, bud.” He glanced at you. “Sorry, babe. Your brother calls.”
“Eh, I’ll get you after this week anyway.” You grinned. “Go play.”
Bruce ran over like a kid himself. Nicole went back to watching them while ‘playing’ on her phone.
“Let’s get some drinks going.” Your mother led his parents to the kitchen. “Dinner should be done in about half an hour.” You heard her.
You went to go sit with Nicole. “What do you think?” You asked, wanting your sister’s thoughts.
“He’s sweet.” She said easily. “So, his parents are even sweeter of course.” She shrugged a shoulder.
You nodded. “Approve?” You asked, hopeful.
She glanced over at Bruce and eyed in him thought. “Maybe.”
“Well, that’s better than a no.” You sighed. “What's your hang up?”
“He doesn’t seem like the settling down type. Even giving you a ring and all.” She explained. “Seems like he's just getting excited. And excitement doesn't last forever.”
You sagged. Her opinion meant most to you and you trusted it. It hurt, but Bruce seemed to have changed since you got together. You really felt that. You played with your ring, your eyes glancing at it.
Nicole stayed looking at Bruce, but to you that just meant she was criticizing him. You didn't see that it was something very different.
“Would you like some drinks, dears?” Martha walked in. She glanced at Nicole, and then her son, raising an eyebrow. “I see.” She said to herself before going to set a few soda cans on the coffee table.
You glanced at her and gave her a smile. “Thank you.”
She nodded and glanced at your sister. Martha wanted to say something, but what? She was positive she saw what she saw, but she didn’t want to cause trouble. “Y/N? I forgot something in the car, walk with me? I'd like to hear some memories of your home.”
“I’d love to.” You agreed instantly, standing. “What would you like to hear?”
Martha let out a breath as you walked out. “Tell me how close you are with your sister.” She glanced at you.
You shrugged a shoulder. “We're sisters. Not best friends or anything, but we're close.” You told her easily.
“I see.” She nodded. “Do you have the same taste in men?”
You raised an eyebrow at her. “Rarely, but….” You sighed. “It has happened.” Not a nice memory, either.
She nodded. “I just know how ladies look at my son, and Nicole definitely was giving him some type of look.” She admitted.
“Oh…”
She rubbed your back. “I don’t mean to cause trouble.”
You shook your head. “You're not, I promise. Just...old wounds.” You sighed.
“I thought so.” She said sadly. “I know girls like her…” She sighed.
“When I was 16, I was dating a guy a couple years older. I wouldn't sleep with him. Well, she would.” You explained.
She looked at you in sadness. “Bruce wouldn’t do that.” She told you gently.
“I know. I trust him.” You said confidently. “I love him. And he loves me.” You nodded. “It's more my faith in her that's shaken.” You looked at her. “Thank you.” You smiled sadly. “for telling me.”
She nodded. “Of course. I consider you family now.”
Hearing that made you smile at her. “That means a lot.” You stopped to hug her. “Now, did you actually forget something in the car?” You teased.
She laughed. “I did not. My memory isn’t that bad yet. Though I say that now.” She teased back. “I’ll just say that I wanted some time with you for a moment. How would you like to have a girl’s day tomorrow? You, me, your mother, and your sister?” She seemed excited. While she was displeased with your sister, she wasn’t one to leave her out.
“I’m sure we’d all enjoy that.” You nodded instantly. “My mom doesn’t get out much since we’re not here.” You told her.
She nodded. “And I’d love to have some girls around. These Wayne men.” She shook her head with a grin. “Man children!” She laughed.
“Like when Bruce had a small cold and it was the end of the world.” You shook your head. “It was insane. And then, boom! He was hyper!”
She laughed further. “He’s always been like that.” She told you. “Be glad you weren't there for the chicken pox!”
You facepalmed. “I could only imagine. Was he a cry baby?” You teased.
“At times, and then at times he would deny anything was wrong. He broke his arm as a child, and tried to tell Alfred he was fine.” She said as she fondly recalled her son’s childhood.
You snorted. “I can picture that.” You grinned. “I can't wait to meet Alfred.”
“He will adore you.” She nodded. “I just know it.”
“I’d like to see how he’d keep Bruce in line.” You chuckled. “He sounds like an awesome uncle.”
“That does fit his description.” She chuckled. “He is like family. He's off visiting his niece at the moment.”
“He seems like he’d need a vacation when dealing with Bruce.” You giggled, following her back.
Bruce looked up, smiling. “Was starting to miss you.” He smirked. “Did mom get what she forgot?”
“I did. Can’t forget to take my medicine!” She grinned, ruffling her son’s hair as she went to return to the kitchen.
You leaned against the nearest wall, watching Bruce with pure love. When he winked at you, you shook your head with a grin. “Talk and after dinner walk with me later?”
“Sure, babe.” He agreed easily. “Wanna see the LEGO house I made?” He lit up at the question.
“A big kid is what you are.” You said fondly, but went over eagerly to see his build. “Are you gonna want your own Legos now?”
“I already have some in my cart online.” He teased. “Hope you like Lego decor for the living room.”
You snorted. “We’d break it!” You told him.
He gasped. “No! We would put them up high so no paws or small hands can get to them!”
You raised your eyebrows. “Oh, and where would these paws and small hands come from?”
Bruce shrugged playfully, and went back to playing. He was instantly emerged in more LEGO building.
“Kids, dinner!” Came your dad's voice moments later.
You blinked and followed your brother as he got up excitedly. What was on your boyfriend's mind? It seemed he got shy whenever you pressed. You'd mention it later.
“You can sit here.” Nicole told Bruce, motioning beside her.
Licking your lips, you shook your head. “I was hoping to sit next to you. How often do we get together?”
Nicole shot you a look. You instantly shot one back and went to sit down triumphantly. Martha had a smirk on her face for a split second. “Why’re you being rude?” Nicole whispered at you.
“I'm not the one eyeing my sister's boyfriend.” You hissed.
She gasped, looking offended. “I wouldn’t.” She defended.
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. “Whatever.” You muttered.
“Girls?” Your mother asked worriedly. “Everything okay?”
You gave her a forced smile. “Just sister stuff, mom.”
She nodded. “Well, alright.” She looked skeptical.
Bruce looked between the pair of you, curious. He kissed your hand when you rubbed his shoulder. When you smiled at him, he smiled loving in return. With that, both your parents relaxed. Nicole let out a small huff and turned her attention to the food.
Tumblr media
Bruce smiled as he helped with the dishes, eager for your evening walk. But first, he had offered for you and him to do the dishes so all the parents could relax.
You flicked some bubbles at him as he dried and kept your face innocent. He reached over, wiping bubbles on your cheek, making you look at him in feigned shock. He shrugged with a boyish grin. “Are you saying I'm dirty?” You asked.
“Not the kind that can be cleaned.” He grinned.
Laughing, you leaned over and picked his lips. “You’re funny.” You patted his chest. “And all mine.” You beamed proudly.
“You bet I am.” He kissed your nose. “Proud of it, too.”
You smirked. “How proud?” Dishes were now on the back burner.
He hummed, smirking as he thought. “Well, I really want you to become a Wayne one day.” He said happily. “And...I want you know...other Waynes.” He mumbled shyly.
You bit your lip, moving closer. “Yeah?”
He nodded, blush dusting his cheeks. “Yeah.”
Wrapping your arms around him, you kissed his cheek. “Well, my answer would be yes, and for the second...one day.”
He brightened and squeezed you tightly. “Happy to hear that.” He sounded thrilled. “One day sounds good.” He pecked your lips. “Walk time?” He asked, hopefully.
You intertwined your fingers with his. “I’d love to.” You agreed, feeling at ease with him.
“Sweet.” He grinned dorkily and tugged you along.
“We'll be back, guys!” You told the parents as you passed through the living room.
“Have fun!” Your mother grinned.
“No eloping!” Martha teased.
“They don’t have hours this week, I checked!” Bruce teased back.
Tumblr media
When the pair of you shuffled back in, everyone’s faces fell. “Dear?” Martha got up, looking between you and her son.
You looked up at her. "Kyle was in an accident. He didn't make it."
Your mother instantly went pale. “Oh, sweetie.” She brought you into a hug, tearing up. “I’m so sorry.”
Bruce moved to hug the pair of you, as well. “His funeral is tomorrow.” He breathed, the two of you were still trying to grasp that he was gone.

Dress Up
Series: Red Carpet Diaries (Post Series)
Pairing: Thomas Hunt x F!MC (Brooklyn Moore)
Rating: General
Word Count: 534
Summary: Thomas surprises Brooklyn with their son, Matthew in a Anne Boleyn Costume
A/N: This was inspired by Nicole Louise Lewis's Instagram Story (Current Principal Catherine of Aragon on the UK Tour of SIX) where her daughter dressed up like CoA and I immediately thought of writing this.
It was simply a normal day at the theater. The cast of SIX was doing some quick run throughs of the show with the alternates subbing in for some parts of the roles that they covered to make sure everything was still going well. It was the Sunday before Halloween and Brooklyn had only a couple more hours of rehearsal and the evening show before she was free for the next two days, as they had no shows on Mondays and she took Halloween off to spend time with Thomas, Matthew, and some friends from her hometown.
While Brooklyn was at rehearsal, Thomas was at home with Matthew picking out a costume for him to wear while going trick or treating. This was Matthew’s first trick or treating experience as he was now 2 years old and they figured it was time.
Brooklyn and Matthew had gone out to the costume store a few weeks prior to pick some costumes for Matthew to try on and pick which one he liked best. What Brooklyn didn’t know was that Thomas had actually asked Addison Sinclair to make Matthew a costume similar to Brooklyn’s Boleyn costume for Matthew to wear as a surprise. Addison had dropped it off not long after Brooklyn left for rehearsal and Thomas had gotten Matthew into his costume before going over to the theatre.
By the time Thomas and Matthew had arrived at the theatre, rehearsal was almost over. Once they were signed in and all set, someone from the team brought them back to the left wing of the stage where the alternates were sitting and checking their notes for the queens they play. Megan Shaw, who is the alternate for Boleyn, Seymour, and Howard was the first to notice their arrival and smiled when she saw his costume. Thomas gave her a small smile and made a shushing motion with his mouth and hand, to which Megan nodded and went back to her notes.
When the cast had finished the run through, Thomas and Mathew slowly came out from the wings. Thomas clapped which made Matthew attempt to do as well. The whole cast besides Brooklyn turned to see them and cooed at Matthew’s outfit. Brooklyn then turned her head and let out a little gasp before quickly walking over to the pair and immediately grabbed Matthew from Thomas and started to spin him around, making Matthew giggle
“Where did you get this costume?” Brooklyn asked.
“I asked Addison a couple weeks ago if she could make it for him.”
“It’s so cute!”
Brooklyn started peppering kisses all over Matthew’s face making him giggle. Everyone else smiled and watched the interaction. What Brooklyn also didn’t know was that Thomas had bought tickets for the two of them in the front row. She noticed them during her song and everyone could see she was a lot happier.
After the show, Brooklyn quickly got out of her wig and costume so she could quickly go through stagedoor and go over to Thomas and Matthew. Once she was done, she ran over to the two of them and gave each of them a kiss on the cheek before they walked back home.
