pre ANH au where Din and Luke meet on Tatooine, have their summer romance and all that, and when Din inevitably has to leave Luke gives him a japor snippet (“It’s a good luck charm,” Luke says with a smile. “I’ve seen how reckless you get on your bounties.”) and Din thinks it’s a little silly, but he lets Luke put it around his neck anyway.

It is only a few days later that Din hears about the Lars family, about the fire, about how they never found a third body.

And then Din just…never takes that japor snippet off.

For years he wears it, the sound of the japor clinking against the beskar of his mythosaur pendant becoming so familiar to him that he panics when it falls silent. He reaches for his neck when he cannot hear that ringing sound, reaches for the japor, desperate to make sure it’s still there, that he did not lose what he has left of the man he would never really stop loving. Even when Din is dying, when he takes off his mythosaur pendant to give to Cara, when he begs her to take it, to bring this child he knows nothing of to safety, he keeps the japor close to his slowing heart.

And somehow, Din lives.

Chapter 22: I Don't Care How Adorable You Are Under the Helmet, Getting Roofied by a Mandalorian Was Not in the Brochure

You tear your eyes away from the stunning view – Mando presumably convinced everyone not to kill you, so there should be plenty of time to be awestruck later – and turn back to Paz Vizsla. 

“Hi,” you say evenly, deciding it best to speak first. “I can do it.”

You reach out to take the medkit…

…and watch in utter disbelief as Paz proceeds to raise his arm, and dangles the grey box high in the air above your head. 

“You cannot be serious,” you exclaim, stunned. What is he, five? 

He doesn’t budge.

“Back to your corner.” His sneer is audible from under the helmet, and his voice drops to a growl as he adds, “Or I will put you there myself.”

Zip!

Before you can tell Sasquatch to kiss what you can’t, something small and silver flies towards Paz’s extended arm; a moment later, the medkit seemingly yanks itself out of his grip and crashes to the ground. For one wild second, you think this must be the work of the Force, but mystical energy fields have nothing to do with it: Mando had hauled himself up to fire his grappling hook, sparing you from Paz’s one-man game of monkey-in-middle. The beskar behemoth will not be deterred, however, and lunges to grab the medkit back. 

You snatch the dagger from your boot and level it at his throat. 

“One step closer and I will totally stab you in your sleep,” you threaten, brandishing the weapon with all the confidence of someone who can boast a one hundred percent success rate of stabbing things and also knows their victim does not realize they have stabbed a grand total of only one thing.

So… this time I really let my imagination run WILD,

and turned our beloved Din and Luke into wild animals…🫣

This piece was definitely not on my schedule, and I’m also definitely not good at drawing animals, but this idea just popped into my head and urged me to give it a try to embarrass myself.

Okay, now that you’ve seen it, I’m gonna scream into my pillow… 🛌😱

(As I said, I'm not familiar with drawing animals, fortunately I found this beautiful reference picture when I was struggling with my draft… This pic coincidentally fits the image of Din and Luke and it saved my life!)

The base makes everything so clear...but I've already done more than half this chapter in the other style, so it's too late to turn back for now 😭

Ode to fics: a somewhat common place for spicy time in mando fics is on the cockpit panels. Upon conducting extensive research of these panels components for drawing purposes, and hence seeing the sheer amount of buttons and controls on them, I can no longer consume such content without having the thought of how monumentally uncomfortable sitting, much less bouncing on these panels must be at the forefront of my mind. The ups and downs of accuracy research are coming to contemplate how interesting the logistics of some of these endeavors truly are.

Note: several levers are missing from the second panel, notably the hyperdrive one. They are indeed there, just hidden in another layer when i took this screenshot
