moron lore headcanons ;

RETROGRADE | M A G P I E & SPIDER

Recorded at the beach house at 38, released independently with Jim ( @diabolicaltendencies ), Alex avoided the pressure of a second album (this is happyverse only) and instead decided to have a little fun. Retrograde is largely an acoustic songbook, a return to the singer/songwriter sound she began working with and is far softer than the work Red Spider Nebula is known for. It is released overnight, with very little warning or build up and gives Alex her first uk number #1 (even if it was only very briefly) with time off planet. There was never a tour intended to go along with the work, that was all recorded within one summer at her beach house studio but eventually her and Jim play three live shows across the uk in small venues to smaller crowds to support the more intimate feel of the album.

some additional headcanons: August took the photographs for the cover art. Sam was their babysitter during the summer they spent recording. He made sure they ate and left sticky note reminders for them to take care of themselves when he had to go to work. “eat your vegetables” may or may not be titled after one of these sticky notes. When jim does the cover of call me live or for overdramatic karaoke he changes the languages of love bit to whatever language he and Sebastian ( @epiitaphs ) are speaking to each other that week just to pester him.

It was hard to see his face in the dark of the hotel room. Maybe he wasn’t serious. Maybe he didn’t mean it in the way she heard it. Either way, from his sprawl on the floor and her ball just opposite, back pressed against the corner of the room, she narrowed her eyes. The empty bottle and two empty glasses sat between them, Jim kind enough to to mention how she had finished her glass twice as fast as he had.

     “ I can’t win either way.”

She was the whore or the bitch. The cheater or the liar. Sometimes both. No middle ground, when every tabloid wanted to sell her pain to the adoring public who ate it up. She was hardly about to change her life in order to make someone else happy. Alex stood up, starting to pace even if the room span a little.

    “ I want to be the one in control of the fucking narrative - that’s what I want. Make someone else look like an idiot for a change.”

As if a vodka fuelled idea was going to solve everything. 

    “ I want to live my live, and fuck anyone else who thinks they are entitled to an opinion. Especially him.” 

And there was the root of it.

She pulled the white button down in across her chest, trying the center in a knot over her ripped jeans. Most of what was shared between them from her own personal wardrobe was scruff and warn through, but just this once she actually wanted to make a good impression.

It was the half hearted, half nothing answer of someone who was definitely not functioning yet. But she rolled over, curling into him in search of warmth. Yes she could have slept in her own room, yet given the state she was in last night it was no real wonder Alex had needed company. She felt awful, she smelled awful, and even worse was the hangover that would set in the second she opened her eyes.

    “Just- five more minutes...”

Jim did not get enough credit, both for being her friend and for pulling her through this tour by the skin of her teeth.
