Carefully, she refilled Kates glass with the alcohol they weren’t supposed to be drinking. Aidan would notice the stock was missing in the morning, but it wasn’t exactly anything new. Kate needed it. Tonight, she seemed to have a glassy eyed thousand yard stare, an identity crisis Alex wasn’t equipped for. Kate wore other people like masks, expecting one to fit to fill the holes she couldn’t stop growing. It wasn’t unfamiliar to Alex just... not her experience. 

Kate lost herself in the disguise sometimes, twisted in the lie. Alex found it so much easier to keep the lies separate. Maybe she just had more practice. 

Alex shrugged, setting the bottle down on the top of the bar, knowing they would finish it.

    “ Then stop fucking around. Decide what you want to stick and stick with it.”

Unhelpful advice, but the best Alex would have. She took a step back from the bar, almost as a challenge to the Irish woman.

    “ Look at me, right. You’re left with what I want you to be. Ex-army, chip on my shoulder, parental issues, right? You read what I’ve hung onto, not the shit I could live without.”

Well, she couldn’t help but laugh at that.

   “ Yeah, feelin’s mutual babe.”

It was nice, to talk to someone familiar. To remember, for a brief moment, that someone might care if she suddenly dropped off the face of the earth. She’d much rather be back in London, nursing a drink and teasing the brunette than trapped in a hotel room to cool off but that was her life. Sometimes she just had to accept it.

   “ Bash alright? Fitz alright? Tell me I’m not missing anything other than too much toxic masculinity in one room...”

It could be another week before she’d get the all clear to fly back, she at least needed another passport not her last ID had been burned but it wasn’t safe to show her face yet. No doubt Jim had planned it all perfectly, but not knowing his moves made her restless. It was a new level of frustration, not to be in charge of her own fate.
