There was a small room in Camelot's castle with a door to the Queen's chambers. This small room was plain and quiet now, but once it used to be filled with the infant Prince Arthur's jingling voice and his colourful little clothes, blankets and toys. If Arthur were to marry and have children, this room would be inhabited by them. Of course, 20 years old Arthur had no similar plans or desires, in fact, he wasn't sure he ever would. Only one day he found himself in an extremely strange situation, where him, his wacky manservant and his sister (at least so he considered her at heart), and her handmaid of a lifetime wound up hiding a young druid boy to save his life. The realization hit him a little belatedly, but the room they hid the child in was the exact room next to that of his mother's. The one he spent his early childhood in. And as he stood there with Morgana, Merlin, Gwen and the little druid, Mordred, he felt like they were a small, very odd family–the truest one he's ever had, and for a lingering moment he felt like home.

He'd been somewhat lucky to have been the one of lookout at the moment - the child had somehow not set off any of alarms set in the area before this one, and now that he was close enough, it was easier to sense that something was different about them...still, he didn't wish to draw too much attention to want was happening in the building behind him. "I'm guessing you are a tourist. Have you lost your way, perhaps?"

⭐ + Aias and Tristan

Mordred (Camelot) + Aias: I apologize in advance for this shameless troublemaker, but if anyone's not worried about offending the gods, it's Mordred. He's immortal, magical, and knows all about falling in love with the wrong people, so there's common ground there. He could also just, y'know, hide Aias away in Faerie because it's much harder to die in there.

Penelope Bunce (Carry On) + Aias: A different kind of apology for Penny, but the girl loves a puzzle. She figured out how to break a marriage contract with a demon just by analyzing the wording, and she'd enjoy the challenge of trying to break Aias's curse from the gods.

Nicky Murdoch (Anita Blake) + Tristan: Nicky's basically a hired gun, so I could easily see him working for the Blackwell family, maybe even as a bodyguard or something. Just me shoving all the ruthless assassin muses together to see what happens.

Leo Barnes (The Purge) + Tristan: Same basic premise, probably, except in a Purge universe where Leo typically works security of some kind. I'm curious to see what the Blackwells would do on Purge night. Do they do all their dirtiest work on the night where everything, including murder, is legal, or are they out there trying to protect the innocent?

I’ve never once felt romantic feelings towards anyone, you included,” Mordred replied, taking his hair down from the ponytail it was in and fluffing it up a bit. “Our parents are having us married for political gain and that I can understand, our kingdoms would do far better with a solidified alliance.” For the first time of this conversation he looked at her, though with his harsh gaze he may have well have been looking through her. “I’ll treat you with respect, that much I can promise you, though friendship is something you’ll have to earn.”

A soft smile graced his features as he walked a little closer, almost as though he was dealing with a skittish wild animal and he was trying to coax them out from their hiding spot, "It's alright, you don't need need to be so nervous. You're safe here, as long as you listen to what I have to say". The treats hidden behind a gentle smile, his hand extending towards her to take, "Unless you wish to stay here?".

I will only add that people tend to say everything changed as the season go but Merlin's progress is the slowest (clothes, etc.). But look at him through the analysis above.

And as a bonus (very simplified, I know):

S1 - village bumpkin S2 - heartbreak S3 - Morgana's magical counterpart in Camelot S4 - working in the shadows S5 - defying the prophecy of Mordred and causing it happen

more merlin fics should dig into the fact that’s he’s like. legitimately kind of insane. like he heard that mordred was going to be the one to kill arthur and did not think for even a second before deciding to treat him like the literal scum of the earth. he would have lived in hiding for the rest of his life if it meant mordred was dead and, iirc, mordred hadn't even done anything yet. wherever arthur is concerned, merlin will bleed and suffer and kill and he does all of it with a blind loyalty that is definitely not healthy and I just feel like that is such a compelling character element that more people should play with.
