I recently got into X-Men comics via the Krakoa era. Ive been really liking the New Mutants and want to try their original series. Is it a good idea to jump straight into that run, or is it a better idea to read some of the Claremont X-Men run for context first?

The correct jumping-on point for the New Mutants is Marvel Graphic Novel #4, The New Mutants, which is a great 50-page introduction to the premise (Professor X recruits a new class of students to the Xavier School) and the cast of characters (Rahne Sinclair, Roberto da Costa, Sam Guthrie, Dani Moonstar, and Xuân Cao M��nh - future main characters like Doug Ramsey and Ilyana Rasputina will be introduced later) and their backstories.

From there, you can jump straight into the first issue of the ongoing title by Chris Claremont and then later Louise Simonson. Really, the only thing you need to know about the X-Men for context is that Professor X and Moira MacTaggart are the good guys and the Hellfire Club are the bad guys.

One of the great things about the X-line during the Claremont run is that a combination of the unprecedented level of editorial and creative coordination and Jim Shooter's diktat that "every issue is someone's first" is that they're very good at doing economical world-building. Thus, when you need to learn who Sebastian Shaw or Emma Frost or Henry Peter Gyrich are and how the X-Men relate to the New Mutants, the books will tell you everything you need to know quite succinctly.

Sebastian and Jim had been laying low in California for a few weeks now, since the British, French, Irish and German government were looking for them and they figured letting them search fruitlessly would be hysterical.  Seb enjoyed the sun, and Jim likened him to a cat sunning himself every time they went out. 

“Bassie!” the latter called through their hotel room. He heard no reply and tried again. “SEBBY!” he nearly yelled. 

“Yes, boss?” the sniper replied, coming into the room. 

“We have a job!” he answered energetically. 

“Here? Sniper gun or machine gun?” he asked. 

“Neither, come on, we need to move.” he bounced up from his seat and grabbed his partner by the crook of his elbow and the pair ran to the car out in front. Jim took to the driver’s seat. 

“You’re driving?” Seb asked, a dubious expression on his face and suspicion clear in his voice. The other man said nothing before turning the key and driving like a mad man, careening down the streets as if aiming to hit people. Seb braced himself and his eyes went wide. “Are you trying to kill us, James? I don’t even have my seatbelt on!” he grumbled. 

“Aww, Basher’s getting soft!” he cooed, only just missing a pedestrian by a hair. He looked at the other man with his big, brown eyes and blew past yet another red light. Seb couldn’t resist the small smile that appeared on his face. 

After a few minutes of Jim swerving through tight streets, even occasionally needing Seb to take over from his seat so his could get something from the back, they mercifully made it to the highway. There was a small, brown bag sitting between the two men. Jim wordlessly took Seb’s hand and held it, the ride becoming less hectic now that they weren’t surrounded by other cars and pedestrians. After a few minutes spent in unusually calm silence, save for the whooshing of the passing vehicles, Jim let go and reached for the dial to switch on the radio. 

 “If you play Barbie Girl one more time I’ll take my chances jumping out of this car.” the blonde said sternly and with a hint of worry in his voice.

“Don’t be silly, pass me my phone, will you, these channels are boring.” 

“Where are we going, boss?” he asked, passing him the device. Jim typed something, blatantly ignoring the road, and then pressed shuffle on a playlist simply called “Aqua”, which he turned to show his second, a malicious and sadistic grin playing across his lips. The sniper groaned as the first few notes to “Doctor Jones” started blaring through the car. 

“As to where we’re going, that’s a surprise, Sebby!” he explained, that same evil smirk on his face, a wild glint in his eyes and his voice dripping with dangerous intent. Seb sighed heavily before replying. 

“I’m not going to like this, am I?”

“That’s just a technicality.” he dismissed with a wave. 

“Well I hope there’s lunch in here, because I’m sure today is going to be long.” he said, opening the small brown bag in front of him. He pulled out a black cap just bigger than his head. “Jim, no.” he said, fear gripping him as he came to realize what he was holding. He held the Mickey Mouse hat and turned to face the other man, aquamarine eyes burning. 

“Well now you’ve spoiled it.” Moriarty pouted, making his best puppy dog eyes at his boyfriend. 

“You did not rent this car just to take me to Disney Land.”

“I didn’t, but I did leave some clues for Scotland Yard to find so we’d be forced to take... a sabbatical.” he explained. “I admit it took some trying, they didn’t get them until i practically hit them in the face with it.” he grumbled under his breath, rolling his eyes. Seb put his head in his hands and cursed to himself before whipping his eyes back up and staring out the window, weighing his options. “Don’t even think about it, Tiger, I’ve got enough chloroform in my pocket to knock out a gorilla.” he said in a singsong voice. 

“Shit.” Seb whispered to himself.

It isn’t combat based. Missions include keeping up with McQueen’s top speed by racing down Radiator Springs’ main street, learning how to turn right to go left at Willy’s Butte, keeping up with Cruz’s top speed on Fireball Beach, avoiding pushy competitors with the Thunder Hollow challengers, and practicing with Cruz at Thomasville, culminating in the Piston Cup race at Florida International Speedway, where the objective is to win against Jackson Storm.

Sora enters the world as a custom-made sports coupe mixing a few real-life sports car models before visits to Luigi’s Casa Della Tires and Ramone’s House of Body Art end with him modified into a next-gen race car sponsored by Dinoco (with Tex’s blessing) and with Cruz’s number.

It’s set during Cruz’s first Piston Cup racing season, so McQueen still has Doc’s colors and spends the Florida race as Sora’s crew chief.

Then Sora tries to correct him, but gets cut off and asked again, “Is that understood,” and has to respond, “Sir, yes, sir!”

Of course, during the top speed races, Luigi is the one to signal the race to begin.

In the Radiator Springs race, Sora’s top speed is tracked by Sheriff’s speed radar, and on Fireball Beach, it’s via Cruz’s personal assistant, Hamilton.

If you fail the “Turn Right to go Left” mission, Sora goes flying into the bed of cacti, and Mater fishes him out.

I know I’ll get hate for this, but Cars 2 elements are here. Heck, maybe Mater can’t be present most for the training because he’s busy with Finn and Holley. After all, does he still owe Holley a first date?

I wanted the player character in this world to be Kairi just so Storm can feel the embarrassment of losing to not one, but two “costume girls”.

The Piston Cup race is announced as a 500-lap race, but no game developer is that malicious to force the player to race 500 laps around an oval, so they’d take after the first Cars game and make it twelve laps with the sun slowly lowering throughout the race.
