4th Anniversary of The Eye on the Galaxy

Released four years ago on Christmas Day, this is the one fan fiction of which I’ve become rather proud. Not only does it transition nicely between Season 2 and the still-sitting-on-the-shelf-because-the-higher-ups-assumed-nobody-was-interested-in-more-episodes Season 3, but it gives many side characters a chance to shine, even those who haven’t spoken since Season 1. okay i want to preface this by saying that i’m not really into poly ships, but im going to make an exception for this and try to be fair.

1. james/regulus/barty/evan: 5/10

i could this happening like one time as a fun anniversary gift for one of the couples, but i could never see the four of them in an actual relationship.

2. lily/barty/evan: 7/10

i like this to the extent that it is far superior to jegulily which is absolutely despise. i can see barty and evan as people who might have a looser definition of relationships and jealous than james or regulus so rosekiller with lily could be really fun. lily seems soft enough to dull some of their edges. plus the fanart is hot

3. narcissa/lily: 9/10

there is a lot of potential here, especially for angst purposes, but i think this ship would work best in like a bdsm fic/setting. like narcissa is older than lily and she’s definitely the most put together of all the malfoys so i could see her domming lily and i love that for them.

4. james/regulus/sirius/remus: 7/10

putting aside the incest for a second. i could see this happening like once or twice. however i think regulus and sirius are both extremely possessive and jealous people, remus and james too but not to the same extent, so i dont think they would like to share. however i think the possessiveness could be hot depending on how it’s used.

5. bellatrix/rita/mrs. zabini: 3/10

the thing about mrs. zabini is that i just don’t think she likes being tied down and i can’t see her enjoying it with two partners. i like quillkiller but mrs. zabini throws a wrench in things.

6. draco/dragon: 9/10

i have read all the fics with this tag, however i think charlie/dragon works better. but the best option imo is like draco/dragon animagus. so like a drarry fic where harry is a dragon animagus? that would be 10/10

7. james/barty: 3/10

i feel indifferent to this ship, but i don’t think it would work out. one of my closest friends irl is so barty core and i think a james person would piss her the fuck off, they would never work

8. lily/pandora/mary: 6/10

i think there is potential here for something soft and sweet but i would only read this ship if one of them was evil and out to hurt the other two.

9. mary/marlene/dorcas: 1/10

i just cannot see marlene with mary like at all. i actually don’t even think these two would be friends post hogwarts based on their personalities. i think they would seriously annoy each other

again so much angst potential. i’ve read this ship a few times, it used to pop a lot as a background ship so i would often see it, and i feel like it can work but there has to be discussions about power dynamics here for it to read well. i prefer snape with a non-magical oc personally

I’m a mom, now! I feel overjoyed, exhausted, and entirely overwhelmed by love. His name is Theo, and he’s just 2 hours old. I’m staring at him in the bassinet. He’s so sweet… My soul feels light for once. I always wondered if it was possible to feel this happy and free.

Harvey’s been hanging around, typical Harvey fashion he only wants to be around for the “important” windows of time. Not because he considered them important, but because he knew other people would be there and he wanted to save face. Anyway, he left 5 minutes after the nurses left the room, 10 minutes after the birth of our son.

I think he went back home. I don’t care.

I have Theo, and nothing matters. Love is a bond forged through shared experiences, and Theo had been mine long before his birth, and before mine.

August 4, 2023.

Back home with Harvey and Theo. Theo is still melting my heart with every second. I’ve been breastfeeding and staying up with him, making sure he’s clean and taken care of. He latches onto me easily, and hasn’t given me any issues. I don’t know why I’m so lucky, but I love him endlessly.

Harvey might not be the most emotional, but he is always financially taking care of us, and making sure I don’t have to work again until I’m ready. I’ve been working since I was 15, and while I have a full time job now, I’ve had 2-3 jobs at a time, for years. I’m just saying I’m tired.

Getting to spend this time with Theo, without having to worry about working to pay bills? It’s nice.

August 11, 2023.

I had been heating up pre-packaged meals for Harvey and I since I returned from the hospital, since I didn’t have the energy to stand in the kitchen and cook, and since Harvey absolutely refused to cook. On our 1 year wedding anniversary, 10 days after the birth of our son while I still hadn’t recovered, I decided to spend a little extra time to make him a fresh meal.

It took me a little longer than it would have if I was healed, but by the time he arrived home, the food was ready for him and I served it to him.

I walked to his side and kissed him, “Happy anniversary, Harvey… Thank you for everything you do for Theo and I.”

“Is this really what you fucking made?”

“What? You… you said you like this.”

“Jesus fucking Christ, are you stupid? Just because I like it, doesn’t mean I want it. Get me one of the packaged steaks or something,” his voice was getting louder, “hurry the fuck up!”

I quickly turned and started to get the packaged meal out of the fridge. I guess I wasn’t moving fast enough, because when I turned to walk to the microwave, I heard him get out of the chair violently causing it to screech against the floor.

“Harvey?”

He hit me right across the face. It was just a slap, but it was hard, “you’re fucking useless aren’t you?”

“I’m sorry,” I quivered in response, trying to get past him to microwave his meal for him.

He grabbed me and shoved me hard into the counters. He then grabbed my hair and threw me onto the ground. He picked up the food and put it in the microwave. He stood there waiting for it to finish, “stay on the ground, bitch. You don’t deserve to get up.”

August 30, 2023.

The second time that he beat me, he did it until I blacked out. A combination of punches, slaps, shoves… I don’t know, I disassociated during the beating.

When I came to after the black out, he was above me. He was inside of me.

“Harvey… We had to wait 8 weeks… Please, stop… You’re going to hurt me,” I was whimpering, the pain was already happening.

He put his hand over my mouth, and continued, even as the pain got worse for me, and I began to scream under him. Once he was finished, he pulled out and left to clean himself, leaving me to sit up.

I was laying on our bed, in a puddle of blood from what he had just done to me.

August 31, 2023.

Harvey held me and Theo in his arms today… he cried and apologized for the night before. I can’t leave him, Theo and I need him.

I keep seeing my bloody face in the reflection of Harvey’s eyes, above me — but I know I can’t go anywhere. This is the home I have created.

🪐 Not that I’m aware of, and hardly anyone calls me by my actual name. It’s usually either Ginger, Khasper the Spicy Ghost (affectionate) or Pippin.

2. When was the last time you cried?

🪐 I don’t exactly remember, but maybe a month ago. I miss my girl. My dog. She lost her battle with arthritis at 13.5 years old. The anniversary of her death is coming up in February. I can’t believe it’s almost been a year.

3. Do you have kids?

🪐 I don’t, but my best friend has two wonderful sons, and I see them as my own. If I actually had a child, just picture Louise from Bob’s Burgers.

🪐 I currently don’t play sports, but I used to partake in tennis, badminton, wall ball, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.

It’s time for my annual list. As usual, these are games I played this year, not that came out this year. So despite all the hits this year, don’t expect to see many of them!

10. Fire Emblem Engage

While I was wary of the new character designs and anniversary excuse-story, Engage turned out to be more enjoyable than I expected. Not my favorite Fire Emblem, but a good one nevertheless.

9. Paradise Killer

What *style*! I went and bought this game immediately after my friend showed me the song “Paradise (Stay Forever).” Going in blind was wild. I sure didn’t expect the protagonist to be part of an extra-dimensional cult. I love exploring the vaporwave island.

8. WarioWare: Move It!

A worthy successor to Smooth Moves. While the amount of extra context seems oddly lacking for a WarioWare game, I love all the creative uses for the joycons. With the major exception of Jimmy’s boss minigame, everything works shockingly well.

7. Super Mario RPG

I debated where to place this. On one hand, I don’t feel like the remake added too much. The QoL improvements are nice, but the SNES original is still perfectly playable. It’s also quite short for an RPG, and on the easy side. But it’s just so charming anyway.

6. Darkstalkers 3

AKA Vampire Savior, not to be confused with another game. On the quest to capture the magic Third Strike had for me, this comes pretty close. If only I could find online matches now.

5. Suika Game

I had to see what the hype’s about, and I understood. So simple and cute, yet challenging. A great way to kill a few minutes.

4. Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp

I held off on this for a while, since I have both original games, and it didn’t seem like much was changed. The QoL improvements have been nice, though, such as speeding up the CPU’s turns. Most importantly, it no longer cheats during Fog of War, so you can actually strategize as intended instead of cheesing certain maps.

3. It Takes Two

Playing this co-op game with my brother was a blast. Solving puzzles through teamwork is a satisfying joy, and I’d love to play again as the other character sometime.

2. Vampire Survivors

So addicting. It was hilarious to find out the dev works on slot machines. Now it’s quite clear that they know all the right bells and whistles to set that dopamine off.

1. Monster Girls and the Mysterious Adventure 2

It’s incredible when you can feel the amount of love poured into the development of a game. I picked up this solo-dev passion project thinking it’d be a cute little indie game. I didn’t expect it to be my favorite mystery dungeon experience.

Everything from the writing and QoL features show how clearly the dev loves this genre and wants to make the best version of it. The balance is wonky, some of the recruitment requirements are questionably difficult, and the English translation is extremely rough, but I can’t help but be charmed by the whole package anyway. I’ve put in around 50 hours getting to the “final” boss of the story, and there’s still a massive postgame dungeon. I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, but for fans of mystery dungeon games, absolutely.

1. Best Book - A Psalm for the Wild Built/Spinning Silver I technically read A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers for the first time last year so even though it is my favorite that I read this year, I feel like that’s cheating. Of the books that I read for the first time this year, my favorite novel was Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik 2. Best Sequel - A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers This didn’t touch me the same way that A Psalm for the Wild Built did, but I still loved everything about A Prayer for the Crown-Shy. While I have heard some criticism, which I understand, it is still a five star read that I see myself going back to again and again.  3. New Releases I Still Need to Read - Warrior Girl Unearthed - Angeline Boulley Firekeeper's Daughter was one of my favorite reads of last year and I am currently rereading it now. This follows Daunis’s twin cousins and set ten years after the events of Firekeeper’s Daughter. I cannot wait to see what characters Boulley makes me fall in love with next and how much I will learn from characters so unlike myself.  4. Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half Of The Year - Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao While Iron Widow is a rather decisive novel, I really loved it and the cliff hanger was the reason that I usually wait for series to finish before I stop them. I have already pre-ordered this novel and cannot wait to get my hands on it  5. Biggest Disappointment - Circe - Madeline Miller Circe was not a bad book by any means, but after all the hype I was expecting more from the story. I do plan to reread it in a couple years now that I have better expectations, I can see liking it a lot more.  6. Biggest Surprise - The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern I was excepting this novel to not live up to the hype because I had hardly heard a bad word against it, but it lived up to the praise in every way and I loved my time in this world. Again, I can see why it doesn’t fit for some people, but give me a red scarf and tell me where the circus is stopping next.  7. New Favorite Author - Becky Chambers While I read Chambers for the first time last year, reading a second novel from her solidified that I enjoy her optimism and writing. I bought like five other books from them in hopes of getting those good vibes again.  8. Newest Fictional Crush - Gus Everett - Beach Read by Emily Henry A broody writer who has a lake house? Sign me up! Aside from that, Gus felt like a real person and unfolded himself to January in a realistic way that just made me want to hug that man.  9. Newest Favorite Fictional Character - Celia Bowen - The Night Circus I just think we would get along really well as friends. Also, a friend with that type of magic is a good friend to have  10. Made Me Cry/Made Me Happy - The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy Megan Bannen/Beach Read - Emily Henry  The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy too me by surprise and I sobbed through the last third of that novel. It felt earned, but I wasn’t expecting it since so many people stated that it was a “cozy” fantasy and it did not feel cozy to me. 

Beach Read was just everything I wanted at the time I wanted it. January and Gus were complex and their chemistry was believable.  11. Most Beautiful Book - The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - V.E. Schwab While I read it digitally from the library, I got an illustrated anniversary edition for my shelves. I have a lot of other beautiful books, but I haven’t read them yet so they don’t count in my opinion,  12. Books I Still Need To Read This Year - Empire of Pain - Patrick Radden Keefe Empire of Pain is a rather large novel and as a non-fiction, that is rather intimidating. However, I’ve almost hit my reading goal for the year so I will be able to start this and take as much time as I need.

An old idea I had but never did...

The Sprite Royal Rumble is extremely difficult to do, but it is fun to see it finally complete and the final video. I've been doing it for 20 years and while this year likely won't have a legit one, I figured why not talk about one I originally planned to have but couldn't because of outside forces: the Sega Sprite Royal Rumble. I was planning to do this, but ultimately had to cancel it. I sadly do not remember why. But here are some of the details of what was going to happen if I did it.

1 - Commentators

The commentators I usually use are Sagat and Koto. Sagat is an experienced fighter so he can talk about specific strategies and what the fighters could likely be thinking. Koto being the more excitable one that can lead to setups for Sagat while making fun commentary on the fight. With the Sega Sprite Royal Rumble, everyone was going to be Sega related and that would also be the Commentators. To replace Sagat would be Professor Asobin. He was the original Sega Mascot as he would give you hints and advice for early Sega SG-1000 Games. And in the Sega Hard Girls series, he was the teacher with knowledge of various Sega Games. So he would be an expert of the fighters entered. As for Koto's replacement, my idea was Mr. Bones from the Saturn game of the same name. While not as excitable as Koto, his cool nature could be pretty fun to write in comparison. Also Hatsune Miku would have been the ring announcer.

2 - Competitors

This was going to be a 30 person rumble representing so many systems, eras and games from Sega's history. I did not include Atlas due to being a recent purchase. That and I was limited to what sprites I could use. If I do this today, I would definitely try to commission custom sprites to be made. Either way, I looked into 135 Sega Games and Franchises and picked among them. But for the competitors I decided to have, they are as follows...

I do want to do this in the future. I just need to have a good excuse to do so. A big difference I would say is I would include Atlas into this mix. It would still be 30, but I think 5 per generation would be better for a mix. My idea..

This one is a bit rambly, disjointed, and self-indulgent.  Feel free not to read.  Really. 

48 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 2^4 x 3^1. 

I’ve survived another lap around the sun.  This last one was a far nearer thing than I am (yet) comfortable talking about, but I find myself starting my 49th lap grateful to still be here.

As some of you know, (and for the rest, I am telling you now) I have been in an on-going state of chronic migraine for the last 9 ½ years.  There have been more intense and less intense stretches over those years, but this last 9 months has been about the worst I have ever experienced.   A little over 4 weeks ago, after starting on a new medication, I started to experience notable and significant improvements.  It was only then that I really became aware of how badly off I’ve been since October of last year.  (Spoiler: it was bad, y’all.)

As I come back to the world, I am grateful to still be experiencing life.  I appreciate the ability to listen to music and to participate in conversation.  I am happy to be able to wash dishes and reply to email. I am collecting little moments of simple joy to balance the frustration at not being able to do more.  

And so, as I try to set a sustainable pace for this next lap, I am making efforts to spend more time resting and healing for the sake of rest and health rather than as preparation for greater and renewed  productivity. I have been learning (the hard way) that how I want to value things and how I actually value things do not always match when it comes to my own behaviour.  If I believe (and I do) that every person is inherently valuable, then I must believe that of myself as well (I don’t I’m working on it.) Consequently, I must watch how much I justify my value to myself by tying it to my work, or lack of it.    

I am putting a priority on writing. 

One of the first things that I did when I discovered I had a brain again was to complete a number of outstanding edits on a paper, brainstorm and flush out a new paper, and, surprising myself, the first notes for a book, which is part of a short series of books, also sprang out of my fingertips onto the page before I had to stop myself from overdoing it (I was too late.)

This was a clear indication to me that writing, something I have done little of outside of academics for the past 25 years, is still very important to me.  I have written or edited for at least 10 minutes (often longer) almost every day for the past couple of weeks.  I had forgotten how much I love the act of putting words down on paper.  Sometimes they’re good words, sometimes they are awful and cliched.  But, what I think I enjoy most about them all is that they are, for the brief period of time, my words.  And, until I share them with the world, the consequences of these words are only mine.  We can spend time together, change, invert, fight, love, and come to rest - all without any consequence or responsibility to anyone else.  A tempting place to get lost in, without a doubt, but also a place where I can rest and heal and play.  So, more writing of all sorts - academic, personal, fictitious, and frivolous!

Carol Anne’s and my 23rd wedding anniversary is only a couple of weeks away.  We were engaged for a little over 2 years before that, meaning that we have well completed our first quarter century together.  I am more in love with my wife now than when we got married. I love the marriage we’ve made together.  Despite all the challenges, difficulties, struggles, frustrations, set-backs, and disappointments, Carol Anne and I have fun together just by being together - now, still, and always.  There is no doubt in my mind that even if I could live life without her, I don’t want to.  I think we’ll just keep doing this instead.

Fourty-eight laps around the sun!  And, in that time I have contributed to the manifestation of 4 other human beings: Sam, Nathan, Kathleen, and Martin.  It is no secret that I had no desire to be a father.  Nonetheless, I have found myself to be a father to four remarkable and very different human beings, all of whom are now old enough to vote and to drink in most provinces.  I have thought a lot about my kids recently.  I’ve been thinking about how much being a father has changed not only what I thought I was going to do with my life, but how I live my life.  My perspective, since late 1993, has carried the weight of parenthood.  I have been a parent for nearly 30 years, and I cannot remember how I saw the world before that.  

Being a parent has made me a better person.  But, more than that, learning how to be a parent to my children - both the failures and and the successes - and learning from my children has made my life better.  Besides the fact that my kids are interesting, engaging, and kind (no small thing in itself,) my kids continually challenge me to move into the future with them.  It is a wonderful feeling to have my children not only want me around, but also want me to share, to some degree, in their world.

Somehow, somewhere among the 4 dozen laps I’ve completed so far I picked up an abiding, stubborn, and persistent belief in humanity.  I think we’re worth the effort.  I think we are worth the effort because I have seen that we, individually and collectively, can learn. Much of the evidence argues to the contrary - I know!  Nonetheless, find myself committed to human beings, and to the learning journey of human beings.  And so, whatever the next dozen laps have in store for me, I think I will still be involved in learning; and teaching; and education; and the conscious and deliberate evolution of human learning systems.  Some of this will involve writing and publishing.  Some of this will involve working directly with learners and teachers.  Some of this will involve just being. I’m excited!

If you have made it this far in this indulgent, quasi-reflective post, I hope it was worth it for you. This is the start of me putting words out there into the public world just to put them out there.  Thank you for reading them.

My 2023 in Music

2023 was definitely the year of music for me! I lost count, but I went to over 30 different live events this year! From small promo events at shopping malls to a stadium tour, I’ve basically seen it all. I’ve decided to make a list of some of my favorite performances, mostly for me to be able to look back on this year fondly. I hope 2024 will be just as exciting!

BEYONCÉ

1/1 - RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR

MetLife Stadium, New Jersey (July 29)

I’ll never forget seeing Beyoncé for the first time all the way back in November 2008 on The Today Show. She has really changed a lot since then (she hardly ever performs “Single Ladies” anymore), but when she hit the stage at MetLife Stadium singing her solo debut “Dangerously in Love,” it was like I was brought back to that time. Beyoncé has said that she has nothing to prove to anyone at this point. I’ve heard people complain when she performs the same songs over and over again, but they just don’t appreciate the crowd going apeshit when she yells “1, 2, 3, 4!” and the horns from “Crazy in Love” start playing. It’s incredible! RENAISSANCE is not my favorite album of Beyoncé’s (even though “CUFF IT” has been my most played song two years in a row), but this tour was so much more than that. I didn’t go all out on my outfit like a lot of the fans there, but I’m glad I could walk around with my friends wearing tiny cowboy hats (we even made it into an online newspaper!). My only complaint was that New Jersey sucked at the mute challenge… but Japan was made for this. We will reign supreme when the film drops in theaters here later this month.

Unlike the other artists I support, I don’t get to see SARD UNDERGROUND that much. They have a tour every year then occasionally hold release events at music stores across Japan. They do other shows too, but they are usually lottery based and I lose every time. However, I was able to go to their release event in Gifu. They had a small meet and greet at the end and we had to draw a random number to determine our place in line. I was number three, and since the first two people weren’t there when we started, I got to meet them first. It was so embarrassing, but they seemed genuinely happy to see me, saying “long time no see” and complimenting my Japanese. I saw them again a few weeks later on their tour. With COVID restrictions finally lifted, I was able to sing my heart out to some of ZARD’s classic hits, including my favorite song “Today is another day,” which they performed for the first time during the encore. I sometimes forget how important ZARD’s music is to me, and since I only get to see SARD UNDERGROUND every so often, they leave a really powerful impression on me every time.

I saw Yui Nishio 15 times this year, but these performances stuck out to me the most. 

3/15 - SOCIAL TOWER MARKET “Music and Coffee”

I couldn’t have asked for more at SOCIAL TOWER MARKET — the weather was amazing, Yui Nishio was playing in front of the crowd like a regular street performer (even asking us to google her lyrics when she forgot some words), she signed my favorite cap, and we took a picture so cute I’ve been trying to take a similar one ever since. This was the first time we actually had a conversation, and it’s crazy to think that now she knows me so well even her parents recognize me. 

10/15 - FM802 MINAMI WHEEL 2023 25th ANNIVERSARY

FootRock&BEERS, Osaka (October 9)

MINAMI WHEEL was also really fun. Yui Nishio usually performs solo, but for big events like these and her tours, she brings out a full band and it’s incredible to watch. I saw her for the first time at last year’s MINAMI WHEEL and it was the energy I sensed from her and the band (and her amazing merch) that made me a fan. She truly is a performer! I hadn’t seen her in over two months, so it was really sweet when we reunited on the street while she was handing out fliers before the show. After the show, I gave her a beer glass I bought in New York that says “#BeerIsLove.” If you check out her beer account on Instagram (@ynobeer), you can sometimes see her using it!

11/15- TAMARIBA 2023 ～Tamagawa Riverside Festival～

TAMARIBA was another performance that had a lot of the things I love about seeing Yui Nishio live. She performs a lot outdoors, and even in November, it was a beautiful day, perfect for us to toast with a beer together! She was joined by a pianist, so even though I had seen her so many times already this year, each song had an awesome new arrangement that made me happy I came to Tokyo a day earlier than planned. I was in town for the Sonic Official Fan Meeting, but often times she happens to be performing somewhere close by so I’m able to take a quick detour to see her. Another reason this performance stuck out to me was because it reminded of the time I saw her in Hokkaido at another outdoor event called FEELDGOOD FES. I’ll go into more detail about that trip later when I write about YU-KA, but for now, I’ll just say that whenever I can reminisce on that weekend, I know it’s gonna be a great time.

15/15 - Acoustic Tour “COZY and TASTY”

Her acoustic tour was my last concert of the year, and what a way to go out! It was here in Nagoya, so not only was I “at home,” so was she! The concert was shorter than her other tours, but she performed some really cool arrangements of some of my favorite songs, including "Chinese Restaurant," which I had never actually seen performed before. After the show, we took our usual photo and she thanked me for coming to so many of her performances this year. Before we said our good-byes, a few other fans and I took one last photo together as “citizens” with the “mayor” of “tasty city.”

6/19 - HUG ROCK FESTIVAL 2023 GW

I can’t believe I saw YU-KA 19 times this year. Golden Week was especially crazy; I saw her three times in four days! HUG ROCK FESTIVAL was the first event, and it was definitely the highlight of the week for me because I met her for the first time there! I saw her outside handing out fliers and she instantly recognized me as the person who comes to a lot of her shows. We talked a bit and she seemed so appreciative of me that she asked to shake my hand.

YU-KA has performed in a lot of small places. She usually does solo or duo sets, so when she announced that her tour would feature a live band I was so excited! I went to the Osaka and Nagoya shows, and I was lucky enough to be in the front row both times. Nagoya takes a lot of shit for being the “most boring city in Japan,” but every time YU-KA comes here you can feel the energy from the crowd that is just not present in other cities. All the people commenting "yabai" during her live stream perfectly described that concert. TBH, I think my hollering the whole time might have had something to do with it. I’d really like to take a picture with YU-KA one day, but for now, I’ll settle for the selfie she posed for during the video that perfectly aligned so that I could be in the shot with her.

12/19 - SAPPORO FACTORY × JOIN ALIVE OUTDOOR FESTA 2023 supported by AIR-G'

When Yui Nishio announced that she was going to Hokkaido, I knew it would be crazy even for me to follow her there, but then a friend of mine told me YU-KA would also be there on the same weekend. It was never mentioned on social media, so I almost missed it, but that didn’t stop me from planning a last minute trip to Hokkaido just four days before departure! It felt like a sign, and I knew I would regret it if I didn’t go. Yui Nishio’s performance was great. It seemed like no one really knew who she was there, so everyone (including her) glanced amusingly at me a few times as I stanned out to “Drink, Pray, Love!” It was my seventh time seeing her this year, so of course I had all the synchronized hand claps down pat!

YU-KA performed the next day at a shopping mall, and I was so happy I went because she did some acoustic versions of her songs for the first time. She messed up the first time she tried singing her latest single “Swimmy” and had to start over, and that little mistake and the small crowd reminded me of the second time I saw her perform last year when she was still a relatively unknown artist. It was similarly at a shopping mall to promote her first single. I didn’t know at that time that I’d become such a huge fan, and I love that I can still be just as thrilled to see her perform some of those same songs over a dozen shows later. After that short weekend trip, Hokkaido found a special place in my heart. I can’t wait to go back… until then I’ll keep drinking Sapporo beer.

16/19 - Touya Day ～2023～ with KOBAYASHI TOUYA

YU-KA never comes out after her performances to greet fans, but for some reason she did at MINAMI WHEEL. I told her that I’d be going to her show in Tokyo the next day, and I could tell even she thought I was crazy for that. I went from Nagoya to Osaka to Tokyo to Osaka and back to Nagoya that weekend; I still can’t believe it… but I couldn’t miss seeing her perform with one of her friends, Kobayashi Touya! I’ve seen him perform three times this year. I don’t remember exactly what he said the first time I saw him last year, but it was something like, “it doesn’t matter if this is your first time seeing me or you’ve been to many of my shows, let’s all enjoy this moment together.” Similarly to how when I saw Yui Nishio for the first time, I could tell he was born to be a performer. Touya Day was a really amazing show, the highlight being KEISUKE and YU-KA joining Touya during the encore to perform his song "Lens." I came back to Yoyogi Park to see Yui Nishio perform earlier this month just hours before I went to Touya’s one-man LIVE "Re:Start" at Hulic Hall Tokyo, and I love that that little event space has become a really special place to me. His concert was also really great, and I’m glad I got to share the Thanksgiving photo of me and my friends with him and his fans.

I summed up my experiences on this tour nicely in some Instagram posts back in October and November, mostly about how I was happy to be up front in Osaka and see YU-KA perform “AM:PM” with special guest NOTD in Tokyo. However, I didn’t talk about how exhausted I was in Nagoya. It was the night of many Halloween parties, and I never stayed in one place for too long. Truthfully, the concert and that weekend as a whole are a bit of a blur to me. It helped me realize that sometimes I need to take a break and stop thinking about the next show. I went to back to back events in Nagoya and Tokyo just a few weeks later, so I’m still trying to accept the fact that it’s okay to sit some things out. There will always be another show…

For anyone that has made it this far, I want to end with a little PSA. I love going to concerts, and I was absolutely crushed when I realized that it was affecting my ears. The first couple of weeks were brutal — I was dizzy all the time, I felt like my ears were clogged, and I could hear them ringing constantly. I’ve gotten better, but unfortunately some things seem irreversible. I still have trouble hearing people sometimes, and my ears are ringing as I’m typing this. If you love music as much as I do, please do yourself a favor and buy some ear plugs. The Loop Experience ones have changed my life! Once you get used to wearing them, you will understand how loud concerts are the second you take them out. They are even great for when that certain someone’s turn comes up at karaoke.

I forgot to write an entry for the month of May, but let me sum it up really quick.

On May 12th was Alex’s memorial. Up until then, I’ve just been thinking of the whole situation and was really sad. I hate how empathetic I am-- I don’t know if it’s empathy or depression or both, but I kept thinking about it being me. The thought has crossed my mind multiple times, but I never realized how hard it was for everyone around. We arrived late and since the service was done indoors, I didn’t want to go in. It’s one thing to disturb something when it’s already in motion, but it’s another thing to disturb when people are already sad as is. So we just listened from outside which was really nice because they did have speakers so we can hear the service from outside, but also, I was able to talk and be comforted by Tim. After the service, it turns out that she was cremated so they turned the service outside so they can bless the box. Everyone was inside, but since we were outside, we were able to watch the whole thing. It was incredibly upsetting seeing everyone in her family so torn over it. As they should be, but it just impacted me deeply. After that, everyone walked away to eat in celebration of her, which was very terrifying to me seeing everyone. I know it wasn’t about me, but the social anxiety was just plummeting through me. Bre saw us first and I asked her how she was as if we just didn’t attend a funeral. I mean I feel as if it was justified as to ask how everything was going in her life beside this because I haven’t seen her in years, but it doesn’t matter. Then we saw Vanessa and Jamie from ACT and we stayed around with them for awhile before they left. We saw Cindy, Alex’s mom, and hugged her. I realized that I should’ve said something like “sorry for your loss” or something, but I don’t think that would’ve helped. I was also surprised how put together her mom was, but Vanessa said that she probably had no tears left or is staying strong for the service. That is absolutely fair, but I just felt that anything could’ve triggered her so I don’t know if saying anything would be beneficial. We left along with them and the weight was lifted off my chest. I think of Alex’s passing daily, but I think I was very disturbed by the social anxiety part more. 

On May 29, Tim and I went to Vegas for our 8th year anniversary. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I was so excited for the getaway and to relax for a little bit. The day we left was very stressful because Tim’s family wanted him to do stuff for them, and it was frustrating because they knew he was busy, but whatever. When we left, we went to the Barstow outlets. I don’t know what I was expecting, but we didn’t buy anything. We just walked around for a bit then got coffee and left. When we arrived at Rio, the check in/out line was insane. We stood in line for at least half an hour before realizing there was the express lane that uses technology, our specialty. Tim went to sign in and they said our room was not yet ready, which was complete bullshit because our check in time was 3 PM and it was 6 PM. Annoyed, we went outside to pass the time. We went to get food, walk around a little bit, which was cool because people were leaving so it wasn’t as jam-packed. When we got back at 9 PM because I was incredibly impatient, our room was finally ready. We went to our room, which was just the basic honestly-- we will not be staying at Rio because not only was it off strip, we couldn’t walk anywhere because it was over the highway, but it didn’t really offer anything great. Why are we paying the same resort fee as other hotels if there are all these cons? We knocked out then too without going out anymore. The next day, our anniversary, we planned on doing a lot, but didn’t do them. I woke up early because I couldn’t sleep so we started our day at around 10 AM. We got some food then went walking. We wanted to try the around the world Coca-Cola world so we went towards that on the other side of the strip from where we parked, but it turns out they were closed that day-- so frustrating. Exploring the strip and hotel was what we mostly did that day until we got back at 6 PM to relax before grabbing dinner. I wanted to go to the pool, but it turns out that they closed at 6 so that was great. I took a little nap before we went to Shabu, which was good, but it wasn’t anything to die for. Not only was the wait super duper long, the waitress that took over for the main waitress forgot everything like our utensils so we had to sit around and wait for those when the limit was 1:20 eating. After the mediocre food, we went home to watch movies and chill before sleeping. The last day, we accidentally slept in until 10 AM when our check out time was 11 AM. However, since we already kind of packed yesterday, it was fine for us to get ready quickly and check out (via express ofc. F human contact.) Once we did that, we went to the car so I could get ready. We then went to Wynn for a bit, which we got lost in (long story short, delusion is key.) We came out and decided to get a drink for the drive home. As going to get the drink, we decided to check out the Coca-Cola world, which was freaking open, but the line was inconsiderably long and not moving, so I was a brat and begged to leave. Tim didn’t want to, but I left and he followed, hehe. We got a Shake Shack drink, which the cashier asked if I was cold, mentioning my shaking, which was very rude in my opinion because he could simply just mind his business, but I made the conversation short and walked away. After we got our drink, we rushed to leave. I was very surprised because the whole trip, we weren’t asked for IDs even in the casino which made me very confused if I look of age-- amazing.

June 3rd, I hung out with Andrew from college for the first time in 3 years and it was really cool. It made me super soft that he told me he thinks of me and hopes that I’m doing well even though we literally haven’t spoken in three years. It makes me so soft and good that I’ve made such an impact in someone’s life like I thought I just exist, but apparently not. He wanted to hang out with me and Tim at a climbing place, but since Tim’s working, he took me out for brunch. The place he chose, I have looked up, but it wasn’t the best. I didn’t say anything opposing, but he didn’t like the food too much anyway. So he told me that I can pick next time, which also makes me super soft because he goes to med school in Nevada, and when he has time, which I don’t think is often, he goes to I assume Riverside, and drives all the way to Santa Ana for me. Platonically, that makes me super giggly like SOMEONE LIKES ME IN THEIR LIVE LIKE THAT. Also knowing that I’m in a relationship with Tim-- makes me super soft. Anyway, he wanted to go climbing and so I agreed to join him and watch, which I guess, is more time spent talking and catching up, so I agreed. It was cool, kind of boring, but I was kind of busy observing everything and everyone so that was kind of fun. When I took a video of him climbing from behind, I realized how much like Tim he looks from behind. Then I realized that he has his weird and annoying quirks so he’s just like Tim in a different font-- I found another Tim because I like him that much. Anyways. He complimented me on my ability to judge like the trail which in my head, I was like this is just like Sims fr like giving them directions. Also, I made him do the “easier” levels which he didn’t want to do, but he did, which made me hehhehhehhe. After he dropped me off, later at night, we had another hang out or social event. I forgot to add that I did tell Andrew about the hangout and what time and he went out of his way at 6 to tell me to have fun. He’s just baby eyes bro I feel so LOVED. It was to Kevipoo’s and they were having a party for his brother’s graduation. We drank, smoked, and played games. I ate a 10 mg edible which Fermin told me would hit soon, but I was okay the entire time. I took a few sips of Topo Chico so I guess I was a little giggly from that. No idea but I was waiting for the za, as Fermin calls it, to hit me, but it didn’t. It was weird at first because to be completely honest, I’ve always thought his brother, Tony, was obnoxious, but Tim liked him and he was Kevin’s brother so I guess I had to do something to not seem like I “hated” him. I also saw Jimmy which was really cool-- I haven’t seen him since high school though we didn’t really catch up, but we played games and stuff. We played Smash, a little of Mario Kart, and Pico Park. Smash was more fun last time, but everyone kept asking how I was still alive a lot of the times but it was because I stayed at the top out of their reaches. Then they played Mario Kart which wasn’t my forte because of the small screens. Because Jesus smoked and drank a lil more than we were comfortable with, we stayed back with him past midnight to play Pico Park. At first, most of them didn’t want to play, but somehow, we convinced everyone to play which was really fun and a bonding moment. Then we all left and it was a pretty fun time overall. Bro, then the edible hit me but it was actually pretty fucking good like I just wanted to sleep and I did. Incredible.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 299,440. Ok, I hadn’t realized I was that close. Now, my answer to #1 might be “a new 560-word drabble.”

3. What fandoms do you write for? I’m nearly exclusively writing for Avatar: Legend of Korra, with a little bit of Last Airbender, where it fits in.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

1. Rainstorm - Su is there for Lin, for once. 2. The Well of Need - My first long-form story, with Lin taking care of Kya. 3. This is My Anchor - A mid-sized Kyalin story where Lin doesn’t make Kya take care of her. 4. I’m Sorry I Need You - An angsty one-shot that fits with a couple others in the “marriage is hard” domain. 5. Walk With Me - A longer-than-intended one-shot variant on a Tumblr joke.

5. Do you respond to comments? I do, as soon as I can. Sometimes, that means getting off work. Sometimes, that means giving a response as meaningful as the comment was to me. 

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? For complete stand-alone stories, that is likely Something Changed, where the last words are usually joyous. I can’t find the link for the worst-worst ending I have, so just pretend that never happened.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? The happiest ending? I like my happy endings, so this is tough. But I think I’ll go for Elemental Changes, because that launched my collaboration with @slowdissolve on Red Jade.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not hate, exactly. One reader informed me that I had ‘let them down’ on a follow-up story because I didn’t write the story that was in their head.

A MAJOR CELEBRATION - HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

I’m a bit late on this, but it’s here! This is not only my anniversary piece, but my love letter to both the game and the community as a whole. I wanted to include as many grumpuses as I could, and I got way more than I ever thought I would ever draw lol. There was a point where I just had to stop or else I would be in muppet purgatory forever, but I really tried to get as many as I could.

Bugsnax as a game was something I didn’t expect to hit me on such a personal level. It truly was a game I fell deeply in love with for being inspirational, emotional, and creative. Because of that, it kicked a nasty art burn out phase I got right after graduating college, and made me pick up my tablet again. My art drive has been so strong, I’ve made more pieces this year alone than the last 2-3 years combined, and that’s saying something. I’ve improved so much too, it’s crazy looking back at what I was making at the start of the year to now.

This game had me so invested, that the moment I finished it, I went online and found so many other people who were also super into it. I actually wanted to push my comfort zone and put myself out there. I wanted to meet people, get involved in the community, talk to the artists I ended up looking up to as I discovered them through the tags. It’s such a surreal experience, because it actually happened! So many of these people are incredibly kind and talented, I feel honored to have made friends with so many of them, and have created some amazing friendships with them too.

Because of all this, it really made me put my year into perspective. 2021 was not an easy year for me personally. There are people out there in the community who mean so much to me...it makes me really appreciate them so much, and I have nothing but gratitude. There’s plenty of personal stuff I rather not get into, but if it were not for me taking the steps to put myself out there, meet people, and have people that genuinely support me as I support them, I literally don’t know where I’d be without them. You guys made and continue to make my year a very special one. I literally can’t thank you all enough, you all have my deepest gratitude.

PHEW, WOW, THAT’S A LOT OF GUYS

Fun Facts:

- The total number of Grumpuses is 87. 73 of them being OCs and the other 14 are the main cast.

- If you noticed, I tried grouping a lot of these guys with certain themes and have it make sense for them to hang out with each other (kind of). I tried my hardest to keep it consistent, but there may be a few stray guys cause it would ruin the sort of even looking set up if I changed where they were.

-Obviously, some of the interactions and pairings are more or less little nods to other people’s connections with each other, whether it’s personal friends or people really liking their ocs together.

- I had to save out 5 different versions of this project because I had the time lapse running the whole time. The files were becoming so big, saving/opening the file became a struggle. Between the 5 files w/the time lapse recordings, the total file sizes ended up being 15.3 GB.

- The clean, final version of the project w/out the time lapse and still retains all the original layers is 172 MB.

- I started this project on November 6th, 2021 & finished it on December 2nd 2021 (That’s about 3 and half weeks, or about 26 consecutive days. No, I did not take a single day off working on this; and don’t worry, I took care of myself and had people check up on me just in case I was found lying on the floor family guy style)

The milestones dates are as followed,    - Sketch from start to finish: Nov 6th - Nov 11th    - Outline/Flats for initial background: Nov 11th - Nov 12th    - Outline/Flats for Characters: - Nov 13th - Nov 23rd     - Background Shading: Nov 24th - Nov 26th    - Character Shading: Nov 26th - Dec 1st    - Clean Up/Additional Background Detail: Dec 1st - Dec 2nd

- A good chunk of these guys have fully drawn out bodies just in case bits and pieces were shown or I had to move them around if the original sketch wasn’t gonna work.

- I haven’t done a large scale project like this since Dungeons and Grumpuses which was all the way back in March of 2021, so that tells ya how much I’ve grown and improved over the last couple of months.

- I have been told several times that I was crazy and was gonna die during this project, and I did several times lmao.
