Ever since that day at Santa on the Sands, Kira had been carefully trying to piece her life back together. It was nine years too late, but after realising just how much she had been holding onto her feeling for her ex and their former relationship, she knew she had to make a change. Gone was the Kira who had been the life of a party, the girl who had been kind, funny and sassy and instead she had become a shell. Her friends had rallied around her, but she knew she had to make significant steps. Therapy had proved a saving grace and slowly, her life was finding some balance.

No longer was she in the shop seven days a week, any hours she could. She took one day to work from home and one day off and she had truly never felt so relaxed and focused. As she pressed the palms of her hands together in front of her chest, Kira took a deep breath, blowing it out slowly just as their was a knock on her front door. Hopping to her feet, she quickly smoothed out her workout clothes as she walked over to the door, pulling it open with a smile.

The smile faltered as she saw who was standing on her porch and she could immediately feel some tension settle in her body. She hadn't seen him since that day at the beach, she'd actively avoided him whenever she saw him in the street and hadn told her staff not to tell her when he was in the shop. But there he was. "What are you doing here?"

With her performance and her raffle date over, the clock had struck midnight and the array of masks had been removed, something that Lia was surprised she had even cared about. Although the nerves had kicked in before her performance, it had allowed her to step into someone else's shoes for the night. Knowing it was likely photographs of the event would get out, she had chosen her revenge dress wisely, she had gone on stage and performed songs that could be linked to her ex without a care in the world. But now, maskless and sat at a bar, she was settled with that unsettled feeling at just how exposing everything was.

Tapping her glossy red nail against the bar, Lia simply shrugged at the bartender. "Sorry, I have no idea." Glancing to her left, she tilted her head a little to the side before pointing at the drink the man next to her had in front of him. "Is that strong? If it is, what is it? If it's strong, I'm just going to order one of those."

Val had heard whisperings that Marcus was back in town for at least a week now. Had she heard from the man in that time since he'd apparently been back? Nope. Had she even heard from him in the months since he'd disappeared off the face of the earth? Another big fat nope. If Val hadn't already been upset that he'd just up and left her to the wolves of Briar Ridge who somehow thought of her as a home wrecker who had stood between Kira and Marcus getting back together, the lack of reaching out to her to explain himself really threw her over the edge. It wasn't that she expected anything romantic from Marcus - hell, she knew full well how it felt to have your latest romantic endeavor drudge up old memories and feelings better than anyone. It was just the lack of communication. The leaving her high and dry while their whole town thought of her as the villain. That was screwed up.

So when she spotted a familiar figure, one she had spent a good part of the summer memorizing underneath the sheets, there was no confusing him. Even with a mask on. Navigating through the crowd, she made her way to him, arms crossing over her chest as she came to stop right behind him. Reaching up to poke his shoulder, probably a little harder than was necessary, she waited with her arms crossed for him to turn around. "So you think it's okay to just up and disappear for six months without a word, while I'm left to deal with the fall out of your ex, aka Briar Ridge's sweetheart, being heartbroken over our fling?" she questioned. For once, not mincing her words, and sure as hell not holding back.

With everything going on at work and his love life, Cameron needed something to get out his pent up... whatever those emotions were. Basketball had always been a great relaxer for him. He remembered playing at the indoor court in the rec center every summer, but his parents never allowed him to play on the team at school because they wanted him to focus on his grades. It was nice to get lost in the movements again; dribbling the ball and shooting free throws. But it would also be nice to catch up with his cousin. It had been a while since Marcus and Cam had gotten to hang out, and he had heard some rumblings around town that seemed to indicate that Marcus might have something going on in his life that he needed to talk about to. So Cam threw the basketball at the hoop, moving to various distances around the court, as he waited for his cousin to arrive.

Valentina had been dwelling far too much on just how incredibly wonderful it had felt to get to pretend that she and Henry were still together. That one night at Golden Hour had set the brunette years back in terms of her 'getting over my ex-husband' journey and she truly couldn't believe she was back to square one, pining over Henry Monroe like the college girl she had been when she first met him. She knew it had all been an act for him, as much as she had wanted to believe there were actual feelings behind the show he had put on, that was far too dangerous a line of thinking and Val refused to allow herself down that rabbit hole. She needed a distraction, and when Marcus's BeReal post lit up her screen, Valentina's eyes lit up with a satisfied smirk. What was the saying? The best way to get over your ex was to get under someone else?

Sending him a quick text asking him to drop his location, she quickly changed into her favorite swimsuit and cover up before making her way to the beach. Glancing around, she finally spotted a large bonfire with a group of people hanging out around it. Upon getting closer, Val spotted Marcus and walked up to him, a bit of a smirk on her face. "Hey there, handsome." she greeted as she approached. "Up for some unsolicited company?"

It had been on her mind for a couple of weeks, but even after discussing it with her therapist, going to her ex boyfriend for business advice, especially after their last conversation took a lot more mental preparation than she had expected. She had no idea if he would even want to help her, she didn't know if she'd even be able to ask, but every time she tried to think of who else had the experience to help her, her mind came up blank.

She had been glancing over to the tattoo studio all day as she worked behind the counter in her ice cream shop and it was only after the afternoon school's out rush that she finally worked up the courage to walk over and do nothing but walk past a few times as she chickened out of going through the door each time.

Mentally slapping herself, Kira took a deep breath and walked to the door of the shop, forcing herself to push it open and step inside. "Hi, is Marcus in? I don't have an appointment, I just.." Pausing, Kira forced a smile as the girl nodded and hopped off a stool, calling her boss' name. Perching on one of the seats in the waiting area, she focused on some of the pictures on the wall, trying to anchor herself to the seat so she wouldn't just dart away and back across the street as she waited for him.

Why 49th Parallel is one of the most cunning war films ever made

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 49th Parallel, the story of six stranded Nazi U-boat sailors who fail in their attempt to cross from Canada into the US in order to gain diplomatic immunity, is perhaps the filmmakers’ most under-appreciated film. Lacking the Technicolor splendour of The Red Shoes, the human emotion of A Matter of Life or Death, or the rich melodrama of Black Narcissus, it is nonetheless a skilfully crafted war drama, with an outstanding soundtrack by Ralph Vaughn Williams and expert cinematography. It also features an all-star cast including Leslie Howard as a pacifist in the Canadian wilds, Laurence Olivier as a French-Canadian fur trapper and Anton Walbrook as a Hutterite leader.

Receiving support from the Ministry of Information, 49th Parallel was designed not only to entertain audiences but to encourage American viewers to support US entry into the war. Screenwriter Pressburger had no qualms about making a propaganda film, later stating, “Goebbels considered himself an expert on propaganda, but I thought I’d show him a thing or two”. Nor was it an issue for Academy voters, who awarded him the film’s only Oscar for Best Original Motion Picture Story. Intentions, however, do not always match outcomes. For instance, the film correspondent of the Belfast New-Letter commented that 49th Parallel left the impression “that the Nazi is a dauntless, almost invincible animal, however ruthless – an effect which may not have been exactly the one aimed at by the Ministry of Information!” Whether audiences were convinced by the propaganda message is more difficult to ascertain.

Following its premiere in October 1941, 49th Parallel was shown in cinemas across the UK where elaborate marketing campaigns and personal appearances were used to promote the film. Walbrook, for instance, visited Glasgow’s Paramount Theatre where 250 Scots Canadian troops and Michael Powell’s mother were also in attendance. Elaborate foyer displays were set up in cinemas featuring giant globes, model planes and submarines, flags, maps and dioramas. At the Morden Odeon the manager “had a 40-ft banner across the front of the house carrying the name of the picture, and some hundreds of British and Empire flags and shields over the canopy, as well as large floral crates supporting cut-out heads of the stars”.

These campaigns helped attract patrons away from their homes, but the film entered British cinemas at a time when audiences were dramatically increasing and cinemagoing was a regular activity providing both entertainment and education for millions of UK citizens. The privations of war encouraged the habit further as admissions increased from 990 million in 1939 to 1.3 billion in 1941, and then to a record high of 1.6 billion in 1946. At the end of 1941, trade journal Kinematograph Weekly announced that 49th Parallel had beaten the likes of The Great Dictator and Lady Hamilton to its biggest box-office winner of the year award. It proudly announced that “the best film of the year is British! This fact cannot be too forcibly stressed”.

Diary entries collected as part of the Mass Observation social research project show the film’s story and central theme of international co-operation resonated with wartime audiences. One woman, who saw the film at Sale’s Pyramid cinema, recorded that it “was magnificent, brutal in parts, but good and natural, and what propaganda”. Jack Lippold claimed it was “the was the best film of the war I have yet seen” and praised the “marvellous shots showing the destruction by bombing of a U boat”. DL Medd added that the film was showing five times a day at his local Odeon and reported that at the screening he attended there “was quite a lot of clapping among the audience”.

The film also stayed with viewers. In 1950, Picture Post asked its readers to list their 10 favourite films. Marcus Bishop from Hull included 49th Parallel alongside more celebrated British films such as The 39 Steps, Brief Encounter and Odd Man Out, and Louis Newcombe of Berkhamsted held in the same regard as The Third Man.

In January 1942, the film premiered simultaneously in 18 Canadian cities. One report suggested that it “is significant that German submarines are now reported to be operating off the shores of the North American coast, thus bringing the film’s fictional story in line with real-life events”. In the US, Columbia paid a record figure for the distribution rights of a British film, renaming it The Invaders for the American market.

But by the time of its US premiere in March 1942, the US had already entered the war following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. This may have diminished the film’s propaganda value but it didn’t dampen its entertainment appeal, and distributors emphasised its star cast and exciting story. At New York’s Capitol Theatre, where the US premiere featured transatlantic telephone calls from Howard,  Olivier and Powell, reports suggested it was as popular as Gone with the Wind. By 1943, the film had taken $1.3 million in the American market alone.

It was subsequently shown on British television, and following new interest in Powell and Pressburger was re-released in 1984 by the British Film Institute. Writing in Monthly Film Bulletin, Tony Rayns cited the film’s basis in travelogue and actorish performances as major weaknesses, but also stated that “the film’s lack of complacency about its use of stereotypes and its play with audience identification… make it by far the most interesting British ‘propaganda’ film of the period”. In his notes for the 2007 Criterion DVD release, Charles Barr also argued for the film’s significance, claiming that it consolidated Powell and Pressburger’s partnership, showed a bold example in terms of ambition and funding, and offered a skilful example of propaganda.
