hello! i saw that your barty's knuckle tattoos spell anti n gone. i have to ask, are you referring to the daughter of oedipus, antigone or does it have some other meaning? also! if you are, may i ask why?
yeah i meant antigone! i see barty in her very much, at the very least as the patron saint of doomed characters. especially ones doomed by familial cycles… “we begin in the dark / and birth is the death of us” and all that.
considering crouch sr as the head of magical law enforcement & barty’s trial, i love the passage where antigone rails about the inadequacy of manmade justice and the chorus responds with “raw as her father isn’t she?”

ROUGH CHILDHOOD // accepting // @bokketo sent — 7. how old was your muse when they realized they had childhood trauma?
........ at the earliest, mid-30s? Possibly post-resurrection? And to what degree is questionable. Elektra definitely knows she's been done wrong for a long time, but she takes a pretty narrow, personal lens on it. The interesting thing to me when Stick tries to have her assassinated is how Elektra is offended. In her eyes, the betrayal is of their bond in a parent-child way (and that he would send someone else to do the job is rude in ninja-terms), when in his eyes she is a wildly dangerous loose end. She doesn't get that for a while.
Up until this point, Elektra has not viewed her upbringing as wrong. It was unusual, sure. It was difficult, it came with sacrifices. She wasn't like other children. But that was because she was special, and they were not. It was all painted in a positive way. She was becoming a warrior in a war against evil corruption. She was having fun as a young adult, she liked the power and the capabilities she'd been raised into.
I don't think she has much clarity that how she was raised messed her up. I think she focuses on the specific actions that Stick and then Alexandra repeated onto her - they used her for what she could give them. She doesn't realize molding her into this in the first place was traumatic.
And as an extra, Elektra doesn't seem to realize she feels shitty deep down (any mental illness symptoms, getting depressed, PTSD behaviors, etc) because of this violence that's been part of her life forever. It's too normalized. Instead, when she feels bad about life, she thinks it is an inherent wrongness inside her from birth that she can't do much about except wield towards more violence. Cuz that's what Stick told her since she was a kid, and the Black Sky thing reinforced it.
rare bb ellie cameo:
Tumblr media
edit to say: I think it is difficult for her to view the things she values and is proud of about herself (her skills/gifts), the things that make her feel powerful and good when she's using them, in a negative way.
In contrast I think she feels funny about the magical abilities she acquired in death, because she knows that's the result of something bad and wrong that happened to her. Plus it feels less valiant than martial skills.

Short fic challenge - 3 for either Elektra of Hardison, your choice!
3 is character meta and I do feel like I've sort of done that with Hardison in As The Stories Go. It's admittedly just under 3k instead of under 2k but it is short and like mostly about how Hardison views love so we're going to do Elektra!!!! Which is great because I love her!!!!
Also on AO3
Pairing: Matt Murdock/Elektra Natchios

Strawberries
Elektra enjoys things to the fullest. When she eats, she dining on food prepared at three star Michelin restaurants; when she books hotel rooms, she stays in penthouses that cost more than some people’s entire life’s salaries; when she buys clothes, she has her pick of designer brands, fitted exactly to her liking.
Elektra enjoys things to the fullest, which is why it’s so insane that this boy, this boy who knows nothing of luxury is the one she falls so hard for.
He’s supposed to be her mission. He’s supposed to be…
“Strawberries, Matthew,” she says. “It’s just strawberries.”
But the look on his face when he takes a bite, when she feeds them to him, the red staining his lips – she kisses the look off his face, bites his lip, hoping he bleeds, hoping he bleeds for this, for luxury, for her.
*
She takes him to a nice restaurant and orders for him.
Including Matthew.
*
She drives the fastest car he’s ever been in and the wind is on his face and he closes his unseeing eyes and she wonders, she wonders what he can sense past the windshield and whirlwind and engine. She isn’t jealous, she’s never been capable of jealousy – not when she’s always gotten everything she’s ever wanted.
They go to bed and she takes and takes and takes and he gives and gives and gives and she bites his shoulder, the inside of his thighs, and he scratches her back, her stomach, and she feels like she should feel like she has everything.
*
“Kiss me,” she says, and he always obliges.
*
“Fight me,” she says, and he grins like the devil in him is set loose.
*
But he doesn’t know, maybe he can never know. He doesn’t know that she was sent to corrupt him, to make him more like her, more like Stick.
“Fuck me,” she moans, and Matthew – darling Matthew – he is so good for her, he is so – so –
*
Stick asks her –
“What the fuck is taking so long?”
And she tells him it’s a slow process, that she thinks she has it in him, she just needs more time –
“Foggy wants to meet you,” Matthew says.
And meanwhile, she luxuriates in his presence, in the knowledge that he’s all hers, all hers, all hers.
*
She scoffs. “The roommate?” she asks. “Why?”
“He’s my best friend,” Matthew says, frowning. “He wants to meet you because – we’re – “
He doesn’t say boyfriend or girlfriend; he doesn’t say dating or partners; he doesn’t say anything, because what they are, they both know, is everything. This “Foggy”, with his ridiculous nickname and pathetic existence, is nothing.
“Sure,” she lies. “Sometime.”
And then she asks, “Can I tempt you – “
She wakes up and the bed is still warm, but empty. She can hear a frustrated voice from the other room, but she doesn’t have Matthew’s sense, can’t just hear what he’s saying through the closed door. She tiptoes from the bed, opening the door just a crack, knowing it’s greased to perfection and will not make a sound.
She doesn’t finish the question. She knew - they both knew - he’d say yes. Before she even asked the question.
*
“It’s not that simple, Foggy,” he’s saying. “Of course I – yes, I’m keeping up with the homework. I’m doing fine. Elektra – “ He sighs. “Yes, I know. I know. But I’m really fine. Great, even. I’ll stop by the dorm tomorrow, and we can – we can spend the night out together. Go to Josie’s, even, you know she’ll serve us even without the fake IDs. Foggy. Foggy, you know – you know you’re my best friend. Yes. Right. Love you. Good night, Foggy.”
She’s –
There’s this feeling, inside of her.
Like she doesn’t –
Elektra and Matthew.
Like maybe she never –
*
They don’t need anything else.
They shouldn’t need anything else.
But Matthew’s insistence on –
On holding onto something like –
So inconsequential –
Why. That’s the question. She can’t understand why he’s holding onto Foggy, to his past, when Elektra’s his future. She doesn’t understand why he’s not hers, entirely, the way she thought he was. And most of all –
Most of all, she doesn’t understand why she feels this feeling, so close to jealousy. When she knows she has everything.
*
She has everything.
*
She has everything.
*
And if she doesn’t.
She thought –
*
If she doesn’t have everything.
She’s going to take it.
*
(And when it fails – when he doesn’t kill – when he proves that she never really had him at all –
She takes Matthew to his destiny.
*
She has never known anything worse.
She knows, now. She knows she’ll never have Matthew.
She’ll never have him again.
She might have everything else.
But never him.)

One more note on plagiarism
This is an answer to a Karedevil Squad ask. I figured since these are very much my opinions, I should answer it here so that people could come at me directly if they want, especially since I’m calling a specific person out.
I’m sorry if this is long-winded or redundant in places. Blame it on the rage.
I’ve had a few people ask me about my anti-plagiarism comments. They stem from this message, which several people received in their inbox a little over a year ago.
Dmcreif had been a slight annoyance pre-plagiarism explosion. He sent many of us dozens of asks, (frequently the same asks) and was clearly obsessive. He liked to mansplain things like “fridging,” “toxicity,” and why Matt Murdock was somehow not deserving of the fallout from the mistakes he made. That I could deal with because I enjoyed reading people’s differing ideas about the analysis I was writing. Dmcreif does not. He loves to argue. He loves to hear his points validated. And he loves to harass people.
Many of us didn’t see what he was doing until the anon message. I still feel like people are pissed about us validating him by answering his questions/talking to him, but if you weren’t following a ship, or you just missed it, you didn’t always notice this shit. I follow hundreds of people and didn’t see his harassment until a couple of weeks before it blew up.
You’d see a post where he made some asinine Kastle or MattxElektra comment and tag it. You’d see veiled comments about how a “certain Karedevil user” is back at it again. I messaged several people asking about what it meant and they were always classy, just referencing someone who upset their ship. I jumped into an argument he’d started about Elektra’s toxicity saying Matt Murdock was a grown ass man and defending Elektra and I got the nicest message saying the OP appreciated my saying it. They were dealing with this shit on and off Tumblr and I didn’t know it. Not until the anon bomb went off and I started combing through his tumblr and reddit posts.
I realized that I wasn’t the only one he was doing this to and it was much worse than I thought it was. I never received the message, but I found 1200+ word posts I’d written directly copied and pasted under dmreif on reddit, as well as other words I’d written reposted in the comments of other posts. I saw specific users directly pointing out that he stole entire posts without crediting people. Numerous times. My blog name was mentioned in one of these comments on a site I had never used. He knew what he was doing and he kept doing it. It was infuriating. I was shocked.
Here are some examples posts that he stole from:
Mine    “His” Trombonesinspace’s    “His”
Those are the easiest examples and are just a drop in the bucket (dude posts a lot, so don’t waste too much time.)
After being confronted (and this wasn’t the first time, apparently,) he wrote this “apology” which had been forced out of him when he came to a justifiably pissed individual with his tail between his legs.
Tumblr media
There are some wonderful users who noticed these things pre-“apology” and post-“apology”, but he ignored them (once he apparently added quotes, but that doesn’t make it better in my opinion.) People also reported him for copyright violation, but reddit only allows you do that after so long, so in my case, I was out of luck. Check this reddit user’s comment history for some enlightenment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this blow up, people stopped talking to him. And responding to his asks. And many blocked him. It didn’t matter. He created a new blog (georgiakaredevilfan) and started sending asks from that. And if people didn’t respond, he’d send anons. His questions are pretty obvious and many of us have recognized when it was him.
Since you are the person who sent this message, @evs14u , I will give you an example. Here are three of your anon asks with a link to a VERY similar question he asked on reddit.
Your “anon” ask    His post
Your “anon” ask    His post
Your “anon” ask    His post
Here is one specific thought he took from you and re-worded - you can find it in the coments of the first “’his’ post” link above. Yours:
Tumblr media
“his”
Tumblr media
Maybe it seems small, but that only took me twenty minutes to find. He posts to reddit like crazy and I don’t have your words memorized. So it’s more difficult than say, finding 1000+ word posts I wrote and he stole in their entirety.
It’s gotten easy to figure out when a new blog is his. Obsessed with Karen Page? Check. Obsessed with the core three getting back together and Karen having to be their secretary (thanks to DDS3, he’s upgraded that role slightly)? Check. Obsessed with hating Olicity. Elektra being “toxic.” Matt Murdock’s mistakes being somewhat his fault, but mostly the fault of the people he wronged over and over again? Getting the group together sooner? Everything coming around to Karedevil? Check, check, check. And finally: false-ignorance when it comes to harassing people who aren’t in his ship and at the same time blatant harassment and baiting to get reactions while still thinking he’s a good guy. Check.
He makes comments about wanting the ships to get along and how certain “bad apples” spoil the bunch. He is the bad apple. He is the one who stirs up shit when he disagrees. He is obsessive. He makes people hate Karedevil shippers (and we’re a lovely bunch), and he made people want to leave this site altogether (me included.)
He needs your validation. He needs your thoughts so that he can repost them - as @significantowl pointed out, it seems like he’s harvesting opinions that he can use. He’ll send you asks where he tells you something instead of actually asking something. Sometimes there will be a question attached to a tangent (which he likely stole), but most of the time it’s just a statement. He wants you to tell him he’s right. There isn’t much of a way to escape him. He is obsessed. It doesn’t matter when you join this fandom, if you have views that are similar, or if you have the complete opposite, he will bother you.
So yeah, this isn’t just about plagiarism, it’s also about harassment. I care more about the latter, to be honest, so I’ve paid attention. I’ve stopped writing meta because of him, but I’m not going to ignore the blatant crap he’s continuing to pull. He is a gaslighting sonofabitch and he makes us all think we’re paranoid. We aren’t.

Hello, you have been identified as An Awesome Writer™! Congrats, you rock! So that all of your readers can shower you with some extra love today, please tell us your favourite five (or as many as you want) stories of yours and why you like them and then send this to another five fic authors you think deserve this title!
Oh wow, thank you!
This does feel a bit like choosing between children though, so I will give it a shot.
1. What we find in the shadowsI only wrote this one for the Kastle Christmas exchange recently but it has a special place in my heart just because of how raw and truthful it feels. It also felt very personal, specifically the bit about having to put a beloved pet to sleep as this happened to me twice this year. Also it allowed me to really stretch my skills and see how far into depressing I could take something and if I could still pull it back. And I think I did. Furthermore it taught me a lot about balance as the whole story is very melancholy which meant the moments of light and humour had to shine brighter and I think I got that right somehow… Also it feels more like a meta character study than a fic in places and I love that. My favourite bit from that is when Karen says she called their child Abigail because it means “father’s joy”. I think I might have broken my own heart a little and I don’t even care if that sounds self-indulgent.
2. Ballads for a dead man seriesOkay this one feels like my magnum opus for the Kastle fandom. It has taken so much dedication and love and a lot of blood, sweat and tears and it means so much to me. Delving into Karen’s head and her struggles with loving Frank, showing Frank in his gentleness, his strange romanticism and overall his acceptance of how he loves Karen and in order for that to happen he can’t just rush headlong into danger all the time. One of the most important lines in the story for me was when Elektra said to Karen “he said he had too much to lose” because that was a direct reference to him realising his value to Karen. Furthermore I have adored - and I mean adored - spending time writing Foggy and Ellison. I have loved writing Elektra because it has given me such an appreciation for her that I didn’t have before and I have really enjoyed writing Matt and watching him struggle and sometimes succeed, sometimes not.
3. The bullet you never saw comingThis was the first thing I completed for the Kastle fandom. It has a super special place in my heart because it was the first time I wrote Kastle smut and because it introduced me to the music of Noah Gundersen. And I am just gonna tag @goddamnitkastle because I can. I think one of things I enjoyed about this was that to a large degree it left Frank to sort his shit out alone without Karen being too much of a sounding board for him. Not that I don’t love the idea of her helping him through his grief (I mean that is basically all Ballads is about) but it was a nice change on the standard trope. My favourite bit of that I think was the scene in Karen’s bathroom where she’s cleaning him up and then they hold each other and he kisses her goodbye thinking it’s forever.
4. Black out the sun and Speak now child and chill my heartOkay going out of Kastle fandom for a while and into Homeland. I am naming these two because they are really important to me because of how pissed I am was about Peter Quinn’s death in Homeland. Because you know what would have been cooler than killing him stupidly? Can you guess? Yes, letting him live and work through his PTSD and his disabilities. I mean wow, what a concept. Anyway, I have named these two because they really are companion pieces and I wanted to explore his relationship with Franny, which they hinted at in the beginning of the series but never got back to. I wanted to look at what it might be like for him to bond with a child, considering his limited contact with his own. I wanted to look inside his head and imagine what it was like dealing with the trauma of what happened to him and how he might find a way forward.
5. The world was on fireAlso outside Kastle fandom. This was a Bethyl story I wrote in about two hours on the bus one day. It was a format I had never ever used before - i.e. it was written in the second person and it was basically a fairytale based meta/commentary on what should have happened, rather than the crap that did. I wanted to look at mythological/fantastical themes, subversion of tropes and I wanted to give Beth an independent happy ending.
Then, there are a few runner ups as well. I have to mention how much I love writing Losing Sleep Tonight, because I love playing with the whole idea of Karen and Frank trying to “go back” after they’ve already given into their feelings and finding it’s a bell you can’t unring.
Scar Tissue was also super important to me with dealing with the aftermath of Beth’s death and how it sent Daryl on a dangerous downward spiral.
Derailed was really fun to write because it was so silly and I have never really tried humour before (and yet it was still angsty).
Anyway, enough blowing my own trumpet.
Thanks for the ask! This was fun.

It’s time for a sit down. A very specific sort of sit down. One with a couple of mugs of tea, perhaps a cookie or two, and a lot of ranting about how great @shu-of-the-wind is. No, I shan’t put this in a read more bECAUSE I HAVE TO TELL YOU SHE’S GREAT.
I’m calm. I promise. I’m calm.
I’ve had the pleasure to get to know her as a person and call her my twin (in spirit because age differences and distance BUT WE ARE TWINS), but you – well. You should know her because of her amazing writing.
shu is one of those writers whose work feels effortless. You and I both know there are hours spent behind a laptop screen researching and begging characters to just cooperate already, but that’s not how her work feels. The stories just roll of the page. The characters all feel real and full and the world stretches out around you. There are WORLDS in her stories.
She’s incredibly inventive and clever, and has made me feel things. If you know me, then you know I’m a heartless wench BUT my twin makes me keyboard smash in ways I only used to do for Inuyasha spoilers. Her latest work on tumblr – the beautiful rebelcaptain Rogue One Foster Care AU – is an absolute treasure trove of feelings. Just take this wonderful excerpt from the third part:
“You are more than capable of listening and grading at once.” He takes another fry. “There was an incident with a parent yesterday morning. Apparently a boy in Lumiya’s homeroom accused one of the foster children of theft.”
Cassian nearly puts his pen through the paper. “Don’t call them that, Kei.”
Just – the perfect nonchalance of Kei’s character? And how she doesn’t tell us how Cassian feels, just shows us his reaction – it’s making YOU feel what he feels, right??
Her dialogue has also always been a masterpiece to me. Take this example from the third part of the Rogue One Foster Care AU:
“You saw Finn break open your locker and steal your laptop and you didn’t tell a teacher?” Cassian cocks his head. “Seems counter-intuitive to me.”
Mrs. Hux bristles. Color flushes up her throat, like she’s being filled with boiling water. “I don’t like what you’re implying, whoever you are—”
“Mr. Andor is one of our history teachers,” says Mothma. Jyn could swear the woman is preening, just a little.
The dialogue effortlessly ping-pongs from character to character – and with feeling. Somehow without the use of adverbs, you can hear how each character would say their lines. My twin is the ultimate at saying a lot with very little.
So you’re intrigued, right? At least a little impressed? You should be. I provided tea and cookies, after all. Then you should definitely check out the pantheon of the amazing shuofthewind’s work. Here are some of my favorites:
floating, sinking – Star Wars, Rogue One. Rebelcaptain. I feel this tag describes it best: “Yes It Is A Fix-It Where They All Live Calm Down.” Only you can’t calm down because of feelings.
Season Tickets – MCU, X-Files. Implied Eventual Darecy. So, I know that she has written the quintessential Matt/Darcy fic (which I’ll get to in a hot potato), but this – this story holds an eternal special place in my heart. I love the pacing in this story, and the characterization, and absolutely everything. Read it. Cry with me. I have tissues and pages of meta on Darcy as Mulder.
The Price of War – MCU. Darecy. The quintessential Matt/Darcy story. The quintessential everything that is great about my twin boiled down to a whopping near 300,000 words. I’m not sure what to say about this story that has not already been said. It’s brilliant, it’s heartbreaking, it breaks the Bechdel test a million times over, it features some of my favorite scenes in a fanfic ever… Just. Read it. Read all of it.
Le Monde Solaire – The Hobbit. Kili/fem!Bilbo/Tauriel. DON’T RUN AWAY FROM THE OT3 COME JOIN ME IN THIS PIT OF HELL WE HAVE (A) FANART. I love this series so much you don’t even know. I have somewhere the start of an Elementary AU of this pairing simply because this fic made me ship it. Please. Come. Read. There’s room in this trash can for all of us.
do it all again (think you’re my best friend) – MCU. Darecy. Fake dating AU. If that scenario alone doesn’t pull you in, then you need to read it for the scene where Matt tells off Darcy’s mother. I have read that scene an embarrassing number of times and it is still not enough.
There’s more – there’s so much more here I could’ve talked about it. Her FMA:B fanfic swallows on the beam, her soulmate-identifying-marks MCU AU The Trick to Binary Stars, the Matt/Darcy/Elektra AU of heartbreak between disaster and atrocity… But this is just a taste of the brilliance of my twin. Marvel at her brilliance and tremble. Then read everything she’s ever written and get back to me about how great she is and we can start an endless feedback loop of “I LOVE SHU ISN’T SHE GREAT SHE’S GREAT.” I’ll bake more cookies.

WONDER WOMAN REVIEW
Tumblr media
Superhero films just keep getting bigger and bigger; Marvel seems to always make a smash hit every single year, and DC seems to have been trying to catch up. With Wonder Woman, the first female-lead superhero film since 2005’s (flop) Elektra, hitting theaters this weekend, DC has gained some major ground. Director Patty Jenkins expertly crafts a believable world for Wonder Woman to dwell in and made Wonder Woman the all-around best film that the DC Cinematic Universe has put out thus far, and very well may be the most important superhero film that’s ever come out.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The character of Wonder Woman is a huge undertaking for any actress, I’d say it was even harder for Gal Gadot, someone who was relatively unknown in the States until now, to convince people she was right for the role. She’s previously done some work in the Fast & Furious movies, but once she was announced as the chosen one to play the role of the Amazonian princess, Diana, aka Wonder Woman, she was met with some criticism. But her smaller performance in Batman v Superman seemed to have raised some eyebrows, mine included, and here in her feature length debut in the role, she’s engulfed Diana in the best of ways. Gal Gadot pierces through the screen with intensity, purity, strength, and innocence. Her Wonder Woman is powerful, virtuous, noble, and forthright, she is just wonderful. She has a smile that just makes you proud. Gal almost effortlessly molds the innocence and naivety of Diana in the world of man with her confidence and independence. Other than herself, Gal had some prominent back up in the film as well, specifically Chris Pine in the role of Diana’s human love, Steve Trevor. I can’t think of a movie where Chris Pine wasn’t good. He has an infectious personality on screen, he’s always enjoyable to watch. His approach to Steve’s awkwardness around Diana was great; he’s continually surprised by Diana and it always confuses him how she can always do that. Chris and Gal have natural chemistry on screen, when they joke, when they fight, when they connect, through the whole film their relationship always felt genuine. Their romantic subplot wasn’t ever in your face either, it felt natural and was done so delicately and with grace, I respect it a lot. I wish I could have seen more of the Amazonians of Themyscira, but what we got was definitely enough. To see all these strong women training and fighting, moving so fluidly and gracefully was invigorating to watch. I could only imagine how a little girl felt watching these powerful women command the screen. My only complaint when it comes to the characters of the film is essentially everyone else besides the Amazonians, Diana, and Steve Trevor. They assemble a rag-tag group of guys to show Wonder Woman the different facets of humanity, however I wish they felt maybe more important, maybe a group of strong ladies would’ve taken it further. They didn’t seem to do anything of importance except just be there. They all had some nice moments individually but not enough to convince me that they’re worth watching. Next, there were three villainous figures: Ludendorff (Danny Huston), Dr. Poison (Elena Anaya), and Ares (David Thewlis). Ludendorff and Poison were the ones who commanded most of the evil appearances, however they were excessively generic. I think when you bring a movie into WWI or II, you can just use Germans as evil doers without much depth added to them. Poison had some intrigue, but we never really learn much of her, all she really spent time doing was marveling as gas clouds and being melodramatic. Then there’s Ares, and he wasn’t much at all exciting. His best moment was the reveal that he’s been around the entire time as Sir Patrick, but after that his intrigue faded away with excessive CGI and just an awkward appearance. He kept that mustache for thousands of years? Really? It might have had something to do with the casting choice that made it a bit ridiculous to see. When Ares formed his armor with the weapons and plating scattered around the airfield at the end, that was a cool moment, but David Thewlis just wasn’t Ares. A change in form or appearance might have gone a long way. Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and the Amazonian women really steal the show for me, the rest were just bearable in a sense to keep the film moving forward.
Wonder Woman starts out incredibly strong, giving the warriors of Themyscira, and a young Diana, time to shine. The concentration on the world building of Wonder Woman was fantastic. It didn’t feel mashed up or rushed, like the other three DC films that have come out thus far. The movie paced generally well, even when the action was at a low point in favor of exposition, there were still bits to draw you in. Sure it can feel a little slow at times, I definitely wanted to see more of Wonder Woman kicking ass, but the slower bits did serve some nice character building, specifically for Diana. Gal was always great to watch whether she was clearly a fish out of water, or standing strong and noble against sexist men, or just smiling. You’re always rooting for her, but you’re also waiting for her to be enlightened. In parts, she’s very naive when it came to the conflict of Ares and mankind, and at the end when she has that realization of who humans really were, after Steve’s sacrifice, a feeling of relief and excitement washes over you. The action sequences were glorious too, Zach Snyder’s trademark slow-mo shots were all over the place, but I was happy with them because I liked watching Wonder Woman kick some serious ass. The final battle between her and Ares may have been very CGI’d and perhaps a bit underwhelming, but the showcase of Diana’s maximum power was great to watch. Beating overwhelming odds in superhero movies will never get old, perhaps that’s because superheroes were built off that premise. I also marveled at the set-pieces; Themyscira, London, the trenches, they all were wonderfully designed, Themyscira being the most colorful of all the landscapes. One thing I did want to bring up was the choice of the WWI setting. It was a bold choice to introduce Wonder Woman in this war-torn time, some people wanted to see her introduced in the modern day, and where I can see that being perhaps a bit cooler, it wouldn’t make much sense to the DC timeline for this universe. In the modern day, Superman and Batman specifically are prominent figures already, Batman already having a long history. If there wasn’t much of a record of Wonder Woman before Bruce discovered her picture and secret file, why would the modern day make sense? It serves her well to be in a time where technology wasn’t all over the place, so the only real evidence of her existence is the one photograph taken of her, that’s what makes it significant. If she emerged closer to the modern day, her ambiguity would be lost. Question that remain from this time, though, is how does she really age in this canon? Is Themyscira somehow suspended in time? How did she age there? Is ten years to an Amazonian in Themyscira, 50 years, or a hundered years, in the world of man? How did she seemingly not age through the rest of human history up until BvS? Did she not interfere in WWII? Vietnam? The Civil Rights era? There are a lot of questions about Wonder Woman and her history that come from this movie, however they don’t really pertain to this film specifically. These are just things that should maybe be fleshed out through the rest of the DC films.
After a film like this, what’s next really comes into question for the DC cinematic universe. Wonder Woman blew all the past films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, & Suicide Squad) out of the water. Will Justice League have a monumental payoff like this one did? Or will the rest of the DC universe be just as flat as where we left off with it prior to Wonder Woman? There are plenty of DC movies slated for the near future, but the rocky start it’s gotten off to may hurt the success of their first team-up film. Especially since DC seems to just want the team up to happen more quickly than Marvel’s. We don’t get an Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, or even a solo-Batman film until after this first Justice League movie, set to release this November. It’s a questionable timeline to have. I would’ve appreciated their creative choices a lot more if we got the films in this order: Man of Steel, The Batman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, and then Justice League. With the multitude of cameos in BvS of the other “meta-humans”, plus Batman and Wonder Woman’s solo films would have already introduced them, the team-up would have more of a payoff. But then again, Justice League isn’t out yet, these are just my feelings as of now and they could change. Wonder Woman is the shining example of what DC has needed and it captures Wonder Woman so epically that my excitement for DC has been revitalized to a good degree. My final rating for Wonder Woman is:
8.75/10. In a word: wonderful.
Wonder Woman does a plethora of things right, and when the movie is going great, it’s going great. Gal Gadot does an amazing job with the character, Patty Jenkins directs with fierce integrity and puts on a show that is tremendously impressive. Wonder Woman may be the most important superhero film to have ever come out, and it earns that praise. The flaws with supporting characterization, a decent lack of villainous intrigue, and a not-too-impressive main villain finale doesn’t take away too much from Wonder Woman herself. She’s a shining light in this grim world that DC has built up and I’m excited to see where she will lead the universe to in the future.

♡ + any or all of: light, promise, forgiveness, denial
{ Send me ♡ + a word, and I’ll write a headcanon. } — @bokketo
Tumblr media
Light - Daylight is a time for artificiality and pretend. Elektra served an army for the light from the shadows, but light didn't equal truth, warmth, or comfort. Light is only really the force opposite of Darkness, neither of which are made up of wholly good or evil qualities to her.
Promise - Elektra rarely makes promises and she likes to deliver on what she says. As someone who generally isn't chatty, her words carry weight. A promise given to someone she respects, she'll keep. A promise given under duress or made to an enemy, she'll be chomping at the bit to break.
Forgiveness - If something happens to Elektra that she considers severe enough to warrant forgiveness, she won't give it. The bar is high for this sort of thing, because she doesn't expect much from other people. Even allies, compatriots, friends. She can like someone and not expect their loyalty to that degree. Elektra doesn't feel owed by others unless there is a very special bond in place, enough so she'd feel betrayed in the first place. She is quicker to think there is nothing to forgive for, because most people can't hurt her in a way that matters. But she will not forgive Stick or Alexandra, or the Chaste and Hand in general, for what they have done to her.
Denial - Elektra denies many things that are true about her - such as her ability to give and receive love, her compassion, and her innate goodness that has survived against all odds.
But when she is feeling low, Elektra accepts certain things that are false about her - such as viewing herself as a solitary person instead of a team player, believing she is only an instrument of death, or believing there's an inborn wrongness she can't fix.
It's easier to believe the worst suspicions about herself when things go bad, the things most people will say she is, and deny her good qualities. Despite the fact that she wishes for the opposite - deep down she wants the good qualities to be the truth and to vehemently deny the idea she's some kind of evil living weapon.
Elektra needs another voice to help affirm she isn't that before she can start to believe it herself, because the world loves to show her or tell her otherwise.
