the thing is, ali wanted to know more about eli. she felt a pretty damn strong connection in that hotel room they shared one passionate night in. it was like she was drawn to eli from the moment their eyes locked across the room and she knew she was done for the second they kissed. now, she knows she's making him nervous by how his demeanor is right now and she loves it. it causes her lips to curl into a smirk knowing she had this much power of him. it was amazing how fast things can change, because minutes ago she was close to crying and storming out of here and away from eli. but now, ali wanted to toy with him and she knew just the right way to do it. "oh, is that right?" ali steps into eli's space and closer to where he stood. "seems like bullshit to me, eli. because i can't stop thinking about it. i can't stop thinking about every single thing you did to me, and i'm going to guess you can't either." she definitely was guessing here, but might as well throw it out there. eli's reaction is all the answer she needs and ali doesn't even really listen to him actively try to deny it. "goodness, didn't i just say not to lie?" she gets closer to the point there's not that much room between them. "it's okay. keep living in denial," her hand slides up his chest before resting on eli's shoulder with her lips right against the shell of his ear. "but just so you know, every time i touch myself, i'll be thinking of you."

as she informs him of this, it makes him realize just how little he knows about her. he remembers that night though, and how he had dreamed about running into her again - but not like this. not when he's caught off guard, and his girlfriend was around.

swallowing the lump in his throat, he tries his best to compose himself but it's proving to be a difficult task. thank god odette had gone to the car. who knows what would have happened if she would have stuck around and ali had still decided to approach.

he doesn't really know why she's still standing here, or why he had even pulled her aside in the first place. eli should have just let her go in hopes that she would forget it and move on. "i know. i left it out. i shouldn't have...the night shouldn't have happened." so how come it was all that he could think about? as he's about to say something else, her entire demeanor changes and there's some sort of...twinkle? in her eye, that hadn't been there before.

his entire face turns red. eyes are wide now as he just...stares. he needs to deny it. she is on his mind, even on the nights he's with odette, but...she wasn't his girlfriend and odette was. "no, i - of course not. night's a blur. i was drunk, and it had been a mistake..."

she  pretends  to  gag  at  his  words  but  deep  down  ali  did  at  one  point  have  a  crush  on  him  that  she  thought  had  done  away  but...maybe  not.  "gross,  royce,"  ali  can't  help  but  laugh.  she  does  find  it  odd  he's  suddenly  all  interested  in  her.  "why  do  you  need  to  know?  you've  never  been  one  to  be  even  the  least  bit  interested  in  a  single  thing  i'm  doing."

“Look,”  Allison  hums  softly,  avoiding  any  and  all  eye  contact  with  Rae.  It  was  uncomfortable  for  Allison,  being  around  her  former  friend  like  this  after  their  falling  out  but  she  needed  these  books  and  the  only  person  she  knew  could  help  her,  was  the  woman  in  front  of  her  now.  “This  was  sort  of  a  last  resort  because  nobody  else  seemed  to  have  what  I  was  looking  for  but  I  know  you  can  help.  After  this,  I'll  be  out  of  your  hair  again.  Besides,  I'm  starting  study-abroad  next  semester  for  grad  school,”  she  was  talking  a  lot  but  she  was  nervous,  could  anyone  blame  her?  “So  you  won't  even  see  me  anymore.”

regret's slowly starting to creep in and eat away at allison. she shouldn't have opened her mouth because now things are messed up. she should've just..sat and endured it like she had for so many years. the alcohol she'd drank had other plans for her though. not that she can blame it all on being slightly intoxicated. it's on her. hearing him repeat it again stings even worse than it did the first time, because he sounds...apologetic. ali knows hurting her was the last thing on his mind and she knows the hurt is unavoidable because he had no clue of her feelings but that doesn't make it any better. or any less hard to handle or deal with for either of them. the blonde had just driven them right into a storm because she couldn't keep her damn mouth shut. "i tried," she admitted. "i tried to tell you so many times but i got scared, and then when i tried again..you were always with someone else. i was too late." ali bites the inside of her mouth, immediately missing his hold on her but she can understand why he let go. "it wasn't because of you. not entirely. it was more my fault -- trying to be with someone while wanting someone else isn't exactly a stellar move, nate." the thing is, she knows where she went wrong. how she'd messed up. but all she wanted was to move on from the feelings she'd harbored for her best friend for years on end. yet, she couldn't. "would you say anything?" ali questions, that bite is right back in her words. "knowing you could possibly lose the one person you need in your life if you told them how you felt about them -- would you?"

Years of friendship mean that none of the confusion clouding his thoughts is enough to soften the blow of her words. The hurt is clear in her eyes, and the idea that it comes at his hand only adds to the guilt.

"I didn't know," he repeats, his words softer this time. It doesn't make anything better. It doesn't ease the feelings that she described, but Nathaniel wants her to know that he would never do anything to hurt her. She is more family than his own blood.

They have never felt this distant from each other. The thought of losing her is incomprehensible.

Ali's hand is dropped as soon as she paused, but Nathaniel makes no effort to put any additional space between them. "What happened to telling each other everything? You felt this way for... that long?" His words may not help the situation, but it's all he can manage through his fog of thoughts. After having spent the night out with their group of friends, the alcohol is still strong in his system. "And you're saying they didn't work out because of me?"

A defense is already loaded on the tip of his tongue just in case she finds a reason not to talk now, but his shoulders deflate as she agrees. "We should," he says, nodding. It's as much of an opening as he is likely to get. "If I'd known, Ali—" Another pause. He has never been so unsure around her— "How long? I mean, we've known each other forever. You never said anything."

ali bites back laughter at colin's words. this was the side of colin that drew her in without fail every single time. they'd been doing this for a while now -- the back and forth, building up to something they've yet to do. "the colin law. what exactly does that say again?" everything around them long forgotten at this point, ali's only focus is the man next to her. she hates how easily he effects her with that one word -- mine. "right," it sounds more..bitter when she speaks. "just..it feels more like i'm only yours when you get bored."

⸻ "it is against the law actually. the colin law," colin responded, smirk gracing along his features. it was no secret that there was built up tension between colin and ali. that any second they could end up in each other's beds if they stopped being so damn stubborn about everything. but why do that when colin could have way more fun doing this? build up to the inevitable explosion that was bound to happen. "you may not be officially mine right now, but you're still mine , okay? and i don't share."

Sometimes, Ali's mouth has a bad habit of running before her brain can even begin to catch up and that's exactly what happened now. It was officially too late to backtrack now and she might as well commit to letting the other know everything that's been on her mind since the moment they met all those years ago. She should be relieved that she's everything to him, that he's told her this but..it stings for some reason. Makes her heart ache because in a way, he's close. Too close. Yet Nathaniel still feels too far away for her. "That's right, you didn't think." Ali bites. She doesn't mean for the words to sound mean, but she knows they do. It's hard to ignore the way her heart races when she feels his hand grabbing her wrist. It was always the small touches that never left her mind for days when they happened or after they finished hanging out. "Because I was scared," she exhales in a shaky breath. "You're my best friend. The one person I'm closest to. I didn't want to ruin that and possibly lose you." Ali's never been this honest and vulnerable with him but it's time she lay everything out there. "So I thought it was better to not say anything at all." Shaking her head, Ali shrugs her shoulders, teeth gnawing on her lower lip. "Yeah well, they clearly didn't work out." Did she want to talk about it? Not necessarily. She wanted to go run and hide and forget she ever opened her mouth. But it was a little too late for that. "We should." Her voice is defeated as she speaks.

None of his confusion seems to dissipate at her explanation. Though, she is right: they have been best friends for long enough that outings like this, with their respective significant others, have never been weird, but since he and his girlfriend made up, Ali has been acting strange enough around him. As her best friend, he had done his best to figure out what was bothering her, spent hours trying to think about what had changed. Not once had he considered this to be within the realm of possibility.

"You," he repeats, wishing he had anything better to say. Instead, he stands before her, blinking as his shoulders fall under the weight of her confession. "What do you mean? I didn't--" The wrinkle between his brow smooths, and it has never been hard to know what to say around her, but Nathaniel's mind is blank as he listens.

"No, of course I haven't wondered why, Ali. You're... you're everything to me. You know that. I just didn't think--" He cuts himself off, but the statement might as well end there.

Her finger against his chest seems to break his trance because then his hand is around her wrist and he shakes his head. "I didn't know, Ali. I mean I never thought... It's not like you ever said anything. You were always with someone else. I didn't know. I... are we going to talk about this?"

"surprise!"  she  retorts,  sarcasm  dripping  in  her  tone.  "my  brothers  play  --  there,  a  nice  fact  about  me.  wasn't  that  easy?"  ali  breathes  out,  alluding  to  the  fact  there  was  a  lot  about  eli  that  she  just..didn't  know.  not  that  she  had  a  right  to  know.  after  all,  they'd  only  met  after  she  was  three  sheets  to  the  wind  and  needed  to  feel  something. eyes  break  the  gaze  they  held  to  glance  down  at  eli's  hands.  hands  she'd  wished  were  on  her  again  in  all  the  right  ways,  but  that's  clearly  never  happening  again.  she  refused  to  be  someone's  excuse  to  cheat.  not  again,  at  least.  it's  fucked  up  that  it  even  happened  a  second  time  --  her  luck,  right? "don't  even  try  to  say  you  didn't  leave  that  out,"  her  voice  is  barely  above  a  whisper.  it's  taking  everything  in  her  not  to  cry  because  that's  the  last  thing  she  needs  --  crying  in  front  of  a  man  who  clearly  could  care  less  about  her.  "great,  thanks  for  finally  being  honest."  her  arms  cross  over  her  chest.  "i  have  another  question  for  you  though,"  something  changes  in  ali's  demeanor  entirely.  "every  time  you  fuck  her  now,  are  you  thinking  about  me?"  it's  a  bold  question,  but  she's  officially  past  the  point  of  giving  a  damn.  "and  remember,  eli  --  don't  lie  to  me."

"i never pegged you for a hockey fan." his voice is dry and void of any emotion as he says this, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. he has a feeling that's not why she was here, and his suspicions are confirmed when she claims it wasn't that hard to figure out what team he played for.

he doesn't fight her when she tugs her arm away. eli lets his hand drop to his side, fingers now fiddling with a stray string on his dress pants. the sight of ali again is making him nervous and as much as he wants to reach forward and touch her again, he knew it wasn't the right thing to do. not when he had a girlfriend he was supposedly loyal to.

when she pokes at his shoulder, it slightly moves backwards as he just stares. "i didn't-" eli begins, but really doesn't know what to say. he has no excuse for what he had done. really, though, he had thought he'd never see the blonde after that night. "i do. yeah. she's my girlfriend."

there was something about colin's close proximity to her that made her heart start to race. he made her nervous and ali was sure he knew that by now with what he was currently doing. "don't act like you want to stake your claim on me now, col." they'd been doing this dance for weeks and have yet to find their resolve. ali was starting to wonder if they ever would. "you made it clear that you're not going to start anything with me. why can't i flirt with the others? that against the law?"

⸻ "or . . . and here's a crazy idea," colin started, leaning in closer so only she could hear. just from the wink alone he knew that she did this on purpose. wanted to get a rise out of him and he hated that she got exactly what she wanted - a jealous colin. "you don't do that and you leave that for my eyes only and we just let those dumbasses learn their own lesson."

Ali wasn't entirely sure when it changed for her. It was like one day when they were hanging out, the light hit him in a certain way and suddenly seeing him with her made her blood boil and all she could think was how..that should be her. "Things change, Nathaniel. People change." The last part was quiet -- Ali had changed. "Your best friend, that's who! The one who's been by your side for over half of your life!" That has to mean something, right? God, she's never been talked to like this by him, and yes, it was her own doing but him being mad makes her even more pissed off than she already is. Turning her back, she walks away for a moment and for a split second, she considers just..going home. Leaving this be and forgetting she even opened her mouth at all. But Nathaniel's question has Ali turning back around and storming right up to him. "Me, Nate!" She's never been so worked up before in her entire life but the woman just can't help it. Everything she spent years burying finally coming to the surface and Ali can't stop it. "All I've been doing ever since we met is just praying that you'd see me how I see you -- how I've always seen you because let me tell you, it fucking sucks going so unnoticed by someone you're so hopelessly into." Being this open and honest about her feelings is a terrifying thing for her, because she's never done it before. It's like she's a damn fish out of water. "Have you ever stopped and wondered why I show up at your door every single time I get my damn heart broken? Or even when I've just had a bad day? Or how you're the first person I call with I have even the slightest bit of good news?" Her finger comes to poke at his chest. "Nothing's ever worked out for me and you wanna know why? Because they're not you."

Nothing about her response answers any of the questions floating through his mind. All he can do is look on, shaking his head as their eyes meet. "Yes, I really do. You've never had anything to say about her before," he says, frowning at the edge in her voice. "Oh, she's not the right person for me? Who are you to say that?" This time, it is his tone that is woven with anger. "I know what this is! Just because you don't see something doesn't mean it isn't right, okay? She's not the right person for me, then who is?"
