Michael Sheen's The Way echoes Tata steelworks reality
When Michael Sheen was filming clashes between steelworkers and riot police in his home town Port Talbot, little did he know 2,000 jobs at its steelworks would be at risk by the time it premiered.
"We had no idea when we were developing the story what would be happening at the steelworks when this came out," he said.
"It's incredibly unfortunate that the story we've written has come bizarrely very close to the truth."
Speaking ahead of The Way's premiere at Port Talbot's Reel Cinema, he insisted the three-part BBC drama - originally conceived in 2016 - was a fictional story and not about the Tata steelworks.
"But obviously, knowing the town, knowing the relationship the town has with the steelworks, knowing the insecurities and the anxieties that have always been there in my lifetime around employment and work there - that was part of what drew us to setting the story in this town," said Sheen, 55, who both directed and starred in the drama.
He said Port Talbot's steelworks was the "spiritual centre of the town" and "part of our DNA" and the news of job losses had been "devastating".
The Way is written by James Graham, created by Sheen, Graham and documentary filmmaker Adam Curtis and stars a number of Welsh actors.
The cast includes Steffan Rhodri (Steeltown Murders and Gavin & Stacey), Mali Harries (Hinterland), Sophie Melville (The Pact), Callum Scott Howells (It's a Sin) and Mark Lewis Jones (Men Up and Keeping Faith).
Episode one sees growing concern over the future of the steelworks, leading to protests, which later turn to riots.
Some take to the streets to join the fight, others frantically try to escape or hide in their homes as helicopters fly overhead.
The streets become a warzone and the town is locked down by armed police.
With Port Talbot facing an uncertain future, could life imitate art?
"It's not like we're saying 'this is what you should do as a result of what's going on' by any means, but obviously I have huge sympathy for the steelworkers," said Sheen.
"In no way is this a blueprint to how people should react, but you don't know do you? I have no idea how people are going to react.
"People will try and be as resourceful and as positive about it as they possibly can I'd imagine because that is the spirit of the people in this place - but at the same time you don't know and people are very angry as well."
For Sheen, "everything" is political.
A long-term champion of the NHS, in 2015 he was applauded for delivering a passionate speech to a pro-NHS march in Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, and he is currently in rehearsal for a National Theatre production about NHS founder Aneurin Bevan.
In 2019, he sold property to bankroll the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff when funding for the £2m project fell through at the last moment.
In 2020, the actor, who was born in Newport and raised in Port Talbot, said he had handed back his OBE so he could air his views about the monarchy without being a "hypocrite".
In 2021, he said he had turned himself into a "not-for-profit" actor, using the money he earned from acting to fund projects.
He has been vocal on a range of issues from children in care to Welsh independence.
Was he trying to make a political statement in The Way?
"Everything is connected, everything happens for a reason, things are the way they are in this town and any town not just by chance, it's because of choices and various things... I think inevitably this was going to be a political story," he said.
"Part of the reason why we wanted to set it here... we needed to feel there was a great sense of discontent amongst a lot of people in the place, a lot of anxiety, a lot of feeling of not having their voices heard."
He said when people were made to feel that they were not being listened to and did not matter "that sense of frustration and anger can boil over".
Sheen made his name as an actor initially in the theatre before winning acclaim as a screen actor playing real people from Tony Blair, David Frost, Kenneth Williams and Chris Tarrant to lead roles in series including Good Omens, Masters of Sex and Staged.
In 2011, he directed and starred in a 72-hour epic theatrical production of The Passion, which moved around different locations across Port Talbot drawing huge crowds and critical acclaim.
It is perhaps unsurprising that he would choose to make his TV directorial debut in the town too.
"[The Way] was definitely very personal," he said.
"I feel like I knew what I was filming and I felt anchored and connected to what was going on."
Sheen now lives near Port Talbot with his partner Anna Lundberg and their two children Lyra and Mabli.
"It's somewhere I inevitably keep coming back to and it's an endless source of inspiration," he said of the town.
"It's the source of all my imaginative explorations really because it's my home.
"It's where I grew up, it's where all the most important things happened to me, it's where my family still lives, it's where I now live again and as I've got older I've realised more and more how important the beginning of my life was and all the opportunities people gave to me."
One of those people who gave him opportunities was Godfrey Evans, a drama teacher who helped shaped generations of actors through the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre and died in November, aged 82.
At the premiere across the road from the town's Aberavon Beach, Sheen dedicated the screening to both his former teacher and Port Talbot's steelworkers.
What are his hopes for those in his home town currently fearing for their jobs?
"Particularly at a time like this when there's so much anxiety and so much concern about the future it is so important to feel like you're supported and you can talk about what's going on and to find connection with other people who are maybe going through the same things," he said.
"We wish everyone the best and hope there's plenty of support for people in the future."

songs i associate with redacted audio characters - speaker edition
!! CW FOR MENTIONS OF ADDICTION, UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, AND AARON & ELLIOTT'S BACKSTORY !!
this is gonna be exactly what it says on the tin. there'll be some explanations under the cut for what im doing w this!
to keep it brief, im giving each of the characters under the cut three songs from my playlists of them, and go into a little detail on why i chose them/have them in their playlists. sounds simple, right? i'll also be including links to the songs if you want to add them to your own playlists!
with that, let me explain what the fuck is up shjdkfdsh
so a bit of context: i grew up writing karaoke fanfics on wattpad, which if you don't know, were reader-submitted requests for specific characters to sing songs within a short story, mainly in a group setting at karaoke. this has made me extremely specific with music and assigning them to characters, along with finding "singing voice-claims" for characters. so, i have some credentials when it comes to this stuff fjdhsgshjgd
with that explanation out of the way, onto the fun! one of the songs listed for each of them will be their svc (singing voice-claim), except for gavin, because i'm still working on finding his svc (i am leaning towards dpr ian for him though because... don't go insane. yeah)
if that all makes sense...
let's go!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
gavin
horns - bryce fox
; so this is the song i used as the title for my big ol' gaviant smut i wrote (shameless plug shhhhh). this song is just so gavin, especially season one gavin. the sex appeal that oozes from it, the way the singer wants the subject so badly even if he knows she's bad for him. like, s1!gavin wasn't a bad guy, but he was kind of morally ambiguous in a way that could be read as toxic. however, as freelancer's relationship with him deepened, we learn that he values consent and being authentic, something other concubi don't. what can i say, i like good character growth.
human - dodie
; this was one of the first songs i put on his playlist, and for good reason. this song, to me, is freelancer singing this about and to gavin. it's about connection, it's about wanting to see what the other person is like under the persona they've created. this song is what happened when freelancer began learning about gavin past the "sex daemon" persona, but its also what happened when gavin learned about freelancer and how they were more than a "jack-of-a-trades mess of a human". listen i love the two of them so much.
sweet tooth - scott helman
; a more recent addition to my playlist, this one also makes a lot of sense to me. this song is about addiction, and while gavin like, literally needs feelings of desire to live, it also can be said that he probably has had an unhealthy relationship with sex in the past. i also just really like this song. but i think gavin has healed a lot of his attitudes towards his fellow concubi, with freelancer's help and of his own personal efforts.
━━━━━━━━
elliott
dream boy - waterparks
; we have reached our first official svc! awsten knight of waterparks is my elliott svc. does this is really match my face claim for him? kinda? i had this svc waaay before i had josh hutcherson as elliott actually. but, to talk abt the song itself, i mean. c'mon now. it's literally elliott to sunshine. the vision in my brain is that elliott sings this at karaoke before he and sunshine get together, but are definitely both pining hardcore for each other. there's something about the playful flirty energy of this song that reminds me of elliott in the best way imaginable. he's just a little dorky, what can i say!
wasted summers - juju
; i like some angst! im not all fluff and humor and smut. i appreciate a good angst now and then. my brand of angst is just kind of specific. you'll see that in a sec. but this song just reminds me of elliott and aaron for obvious reasons. how aaron grew up too fast cuz of their parents, how aaron felt jealous and angry over elliott telling him and their mom about magic, how elliott told sunshine he's the protective type because of how he grew up (side note i have many thoughts abt elliott & blake and protection vs possession if anyone would be interested lmao). their relationship just makes me go a bit insane /pos.
still got it - troye sivan
; ALRIGHT THIS REQUIRES A BIT OF AN EXPLANATION. so i basically have a whole mv planned in my big ol' brain around this song, and around the concept of: what if scorpius' memory erasing worked for longer? what if elliott genuinely thought, for a bit, that he and sunshine had a bad breakup, but that he still loved them? and still "wanted them back"? only to then have the memories, the real ones, come back in a flood of sensory overload and horrible realizations? see? i like angst. :]
━━━━━━━━
porter
brutus - the buttress
; first things first, i dont support this band due to their transphobic comments. that being said, this song is incredibly porter-coded. "my whole life you were a teacher and friend to me / please know my actions are not motivated only by envy" - like this is just about will and vincent. i don't have to explain further.
we don’t have to dance - andy black
; porter's svc! i liked this song for him cuz i imagine treasure is the first person in a loooong time that porter has actually wanted to stay around, even though he's so used to these one night stands and passionate scenes. and even though he really likes treasure, he still goes back to the old him: offering just to dance, just to fuck, just for this to be casual.
car lights - james marriott
; so i have a little headcanon that porter's maker was someone that porter was dating in secret because he (maker) was the kind of guy who would say homophobic things in front of others, but would end the night with his tongue down porter's throat (or something like that). this song is about that kind of experience: worried you're about to be caught despite it feeling so fucking good. also, this song just kinda slaps.
━━━━━━━━
lasko
stutter - marianas trench
; this song just makes sense, not just in the fact that lasko stammers and stutters a lot when talking (especially when he's excited, god hes adorable) but also in that lasko is basically a hyperverbal autistic/auDHD person who constantly talks even when they don't have the energy to do so (totally not projecting what) and i think that's representation we don't always see. also, imagine him finding this song and dancing to it? yeah.
eraser - ricky montgomery
; lasko's svc! does this surprise anyone? actually it might. i love ricky montgomery so much, his debut album is one of my favorite pieces of music out there and i think he's such a talented artist. his range and subject matter in his songs always screamed lasko to me, and ricky's vocals just match lasko so much. this song is about being socially awkward, which like. yeah. i have like four or five ricky songs on my lasko playlist which is really funny actually hgjkfdhsdh!
my mother wants me dead - carolesdaughter
; lasko "mommy issues" moore anyone? yeah this song is that. i know i could have gone for the mitski mommy issues, but something about lasko tells me his mommy issues are like rage. like, as much rage as lasko can have towards a person. the damn fam and their mommy issues. this song also plays into my hc that lasko used to smoke before starting at D.A.M.N., picking it up after the inversion, and then quitting again once he started healing and met coworker.
━━━━━━━━
guy
fallin’ for you - r5
; as you all know by now, ross lynch is my guy faceclaim. and while i love the driver era (a kiss is also on my guy playlist, it is in fact the best tde song), ross' voice during the r5 era actually suits guy a little more to me if im being honest. also, its a hc of mine that guy's family did music, but guy had a really bad falling out with his parents and it kinds ruined things for a while. r5!ross's vocals are higher than now, since this was during the disney era, but this song is just too perfect to me not to use for guy.
30/90 from tick…tick…BOOM!
; i mentioned this in my face claim post, but i had andrew garfield as my guy face claim because of this song from the movie. it's just like literally guy tho. we know guy's a writer, we know how writers are. as a writer myself (not professionally), "30/90" is more than just representation of someone wanting to peak before their past "the right age"; this is about creatives wanting to make something that will last longer than their life, and that just screams guy to me. i don't think he wants to be famous, but i think he wants to have a legacy of media he creates last longer than himself.
honey - troye sivan
; listen. "something to give each other" is my favorite album from 2023, and most of those songs remind me of one redacted character or another, so if there's a lot of songs in my playlists from this album, shush. anyways, this song is an obvious choice for guy since it's titled "honey", but if you listen to it, it actually is a pretty sweet (eh? eh??) song. it's about falling for someone and wanting to be with them, and since its a fandom wide hc that guy probably fell in love with honey upon first meeting them, this plays into that idea. look i just love how much of a simp guy is for honey, what can i say?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
if i have any more energy to do more of these i will, but my spring break ends soon so we'll see. also, i managed to make height charts for redacted audio characters & listeners if anyone would wanna see those (they would include my listener oc's). also, if you have any songs you think fit the bois, i may open my asks again if you want to send those to me :0

Pairing: RK900/Gavin Reed
Tags: Post Pacifist Ending, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Eventual Smut, Angst, Hurt/Comfort
Masterlist
Read on AO3 here:
Summary: A lot has changed since the revolution. Crimes against androids are now punished in the same way as crimes against humans. A reluctant Gavin Reed and his new partner RK900 have been assigned to investigate a string of disturbing murders. Despite the shift in Detroit's social climate, Gavin still holds reservations about whether or not androids are truly alive. Will his developing feelings for 'Nines' be the thing to change this?
Warnings: Graphic Violence, Depression/Self Destructive Behaviour, Eventual Smut
Word Count: 3K
Gavin and Nines stood at Fowler's desk, outlining the findings of their investigation. This mostly equated to an ongoing monologue delivered by Nines as the latter sat reclined in his chair, staring into space.
The Captain's features were contorted into a look of displeasure. He observed Nines silently as it spoke, beady eyes peering out from the fold of his furrowed brow. His hands were clasped firmly on the brim of his desk, sizable digits twitching impatiently.
"So let me get this straight," he finally said, cutting into the droning tedium of the one-sided dialogue. "You think these crimes are somehow connected to this 'Mikey Scott' goon. A man who, from what I read in your report, sounds like he'd struggle to tie his own shoes."
Nines calmly leafed through the papers on the table before directing Fowler's attention to a series of chat logs. "The man lied at length during his witness statement, and we have a reasonable hypothesis as to why. As you can see, these logs suggest affiliations with a key person, or persons, of interest."
Fowler stared at the paper, limply lifting one of the corners. "Of interest to who, exactly? Because if you're trying to spin this junk as evidence, you're out of your damn mind."
"I understand it may appear superfluous", Nines continued, ignoring the disparaging edge to its superior's tone. "However, this is not the case. Detective Reed and I agree that use of code may have been employed by the killer to communicate with Mr Scott, as well as - "
Fowler held up a hand, stopping the android before they could continue. "I'm hearing a lot of maybes here, but I'm still not seeing a shred of proof. You two have been assigned to this case for over a week, and all you've got to show for it is another body. What the Hell have you been doing?"
The light on Nine's temple flickered a little, albeit it refused to show any indication of frustration. Gavin was unable to deploy the same skills of emotional regulation, rising to the bait almost immediately. He pulled himself out of his slouch, folding his arms defensively.
"Hey, we've been busting our asses. Where do you get off on telling us what we have and haven't been doing?"
Fowler leaned forward, as if readying himself to knock some sense into his mouthy subordinate."I'm the one in charge here, Reed. You'd do well to remember that."
"Captain", Nines interrupted before the situation was able to escalate. It placed a hand on Gavin's shoulder in an attempt to placate him.
It was almost too effective. Gavin marvelled at how delicate the gesture felt, despite Nines' established capacity for overwhelming strength. Had it wished to restrain him, it could have, but there was nothing forceful about the weight of its grasp. It handled him as though he were a friend. Without any intent to intimidate or harm.
Despite this, Gavin pulled away from the hold as though it were causing him searing pain. Nines' hand was left suspended in the absence of its partner before its slowly retreated.
"Consider the bigger picture," it said, directing its attention back to Fowler. "We are no longer observing the actions of a single madman. This is an organised hate group, one which may prove to be exceedingly dangerous. If we turn a blind eye, who's to say what the consequences may be?"
"I think it's you who needs to consider the bigger picture", Fowler seethed. "You want me to drag this department through the mud more than it already has so that you can test what? A hunch?"
Nines' throat bobbed visibly, as if it was struggling with a non-existent breath. "We have established a link, the use of code is synonymous with our suspect profile." It stabbed its finger onto the desk, perhaps with more force than intended. Tracing the digit across the page, it underlined a passage of interest.
Fowler growled, snatching the page from under its hand and bringing it close to his face. His eyes trailed up and down, becoming lost even further in the folds of his brow.
"You mean the 7-letter cypher?", he said lethargically "The same code I used to pass notes to my crush back in High School?"
"It is not a matter of decryption method. It is the context in which it was used. CLHQ is clearly a code in itself. No doubt a location for - "
"Are you seriously prepared to die on this hill?" Fowler ran his fingers down his face, pulling the skin taut. "A pair of goons with decoder rings. That's your smoking gun. An arrest requires probable cause. Or did you miss that part of your training?"
Subtle twitches slithered their way through Nines' otherwise neutral expression, as its lips curled downwards into the ghost of a scowl.
"We have both evidence and probable cause. Even if we didn't - there is certainly a case for reasonable suspicion." The displeasure was palpable in its low, commanding tone, as the cracks continued to form in its visage of composure. "With consideration for my model, Captain, I ask that you trust my judgement on this."
"Are you saying that my judgement isn't enough?" Fowler pointed a finger to his subordinate, beginning to sweat from exertion. "Do not get smart with me. I'm warning you."
"It's not getting smart," Gavin interrupted, tiring of the Captain's belligerent attitude. "It's trying to make a point, and you don't wanna hear it."
Fowler seemed to let this particular outburst slide as he remained locked in his standoff with Nines. Gavin watched on, intrigued, as the partner who typically approached their superior with the utmost respect vehemently refused to yield.
Ultimately, Fowler was the first to back down, sighing as he addressed Nines with an uncharacteristic level of softness. "...RK900, there's a reason I hired you, and it has nothing to do with your model. I can see you've got potential, but you have been with the department for less than a year. There's still time to screw it all up."
He then turned his attention to Gavin, and any hint of warmth dissipated. "Case and point: I trusted you to keep this genius supervised, but all you've done is let him play 'Choose Your Own Adventure'. Again."
"It was a good adventure to pick. We've made fucking progress", Gavin argued back hotly, "Not only are these freaks local, but they're following our investigation. 'Organic + synth'? I mean, come on, it's hardly subtle who they're talking about."
"Subtle or not, it doesn't prove their involvement in anything. Other than shit-talking police."
"Jeff, give us a break here", he sighed, hoisting himself up in his chair. "We pay this guy a visit, ask him some questions, and all of sudden he's arranging an emergency clan meeting? If he didn't have anything to hide, he wouldn't be worried."
"Who says he's worried?" Fowler replied, "'CLHQ' could stand for anything. Hell, what about that new coffee house that's opened up on Renaissance Drive?"
"Coffee Lovers - Harbour Quarter", Nines monotoned.
Fowler snapped his fingers, smugness exuding from the gesture. "That's the one. Last I checked, it wasn't illegal to meet up with friends for coffee. Unless that's something you take personal issue with?"
Gavin felt his temperature rise, heat burning to the tips of his ears. "Are we seriously going to give these bastards a hall pass for all the dangerous and illegal things they've been saying? I thought inciting violence against androids was a criminal offence."
"Well shit", Fowler brought his hands together in a silent parody of applause. "Look who's finally decided to read up on the current legislation."
"Do you even care about all the sick shit these people are saying? All the twisted shit they might try to do?"
"Since when do you, Reed?"
Gavin stalled, his mouth dry. Well fuck.
It was a dirty move on Fowler's part. After all, it had been him who insisted Gavin undertake the obligatory 'tolerance bootcamp'. The detective didn't know when his position had changed and had no desire to grapple with the broader implications of this.Throughout his crisis, Nines was staring at him with sharp, inquisitive eyes. Demanding the truth.
"It doesn't matter how I feel", Gavin blurted out hurriedly. "The law is the law, and that's all there is to it."
The android leaned forward expectantly, as if waiting for an elaboration on this before slumping back into its chair with a dour look. Gavin wondered if it was disappointed in him - if it was even capable of that - before firmly shaking his head, expelling any doubts over his decision.
You don't care about these damn machines. You never have and never will.
Fowler closed his eyes, nostrils flaring in vexation. He clearly didn't appreciate Gavin using his noncommittal stance against him. "We'll look into the activity you've presented. At the very least, we can have the forum shut down. Slap Scott a fine for hate speech -"
How considerate.
" - but you can't let yourself get distracted." He reopened his eyes, straightening up the papers that were littering his desk and sliding the pile back to the partners. "The longer you waste time, the more androids die. You have one more week to gather up some real leads and evidence. Don't let me down"
Before Gavin had a chance to respond, Nines stood to its feet, hands folded behind its back. "Thank you for your consideration, Captain. I can assure you we will not disappoint."
With a diplomatic nod, the android made its way to the office door, patiently waiting for its partner to join. Gavin shot Fowler one final, simmering glare, snatching up the papers and reluctantly dragging his feet to the exit. With the door closed, and once they were clear of Fowler's earshot, he allowed himself to vent.
"Why does that old fucker have to be so stubborn?", he mumbled bitingly, rifling through his pockets. "The pieces are there, if he'd just give us a chance to put them together."
"While frustrating, I can at least somewhat understand his position", Nines replied, "The Homicide Department has been facing significant scrutiny relating to these crimes. Consensus is that the police are treating the victims as low priority, given they are androids."
"Bullshit" Gavin continued his search, his efforts rewarding him with a crumpled packet of cigarettes. "The bastard killing these bots is tricky. They've got no idea how little we've been given to work with."
Nines narrowed its eyes, LED spinning yellow in thought. "The lack of forensics is troubling. However, It is obvious our killer wants us to follow the trail he is laying out. This is more than just killing. It is a game."
"I'd hate to think what this guy was like as a kid. If this is his idea of a game."
Gavin placed a cigarette into his mouth as the two made their way outside. For the first time in days, there had been no rain, with whatever moisture remained on the ground hardening into ice. Hands shaking, he brought his lighter to his mouth and ignited the smoke. Taking a drag in an attempt to warm up, his teeth chattered involuntarily. Nines huffed in response, something it often seemed to do when it was amused.
"Don't know what you're laughin' at", Gavin grumbled, hot breath swirling into the air. "It's not my fault that I get cold and you don't."
"On the contrary, my biocomponents experience reduced functionality in extreme weather conditions. While I may not face the same physical discomfort, the cold has its impact."
"So stop being an asshole about it, then" Gavin blew smoke towards the sky, letting out a contented hum. "I don't know what works for you androids when you're freezing your balls off, but this works for humans."
"Biologically speaking, it does the opposite. Smoking constricts blood vessels, exacerbating the feelings of cold" Nines looked Gavin up and down, scrutinising his attire. "You would be better off purchasing gloves. Or a decent winter coat."
"I really wish they'd built you with a fucking mute button."
"Perhaps we should stick to discussing the investigation", Nines suggested with another small huff. "I have a theory I wish to share, pertaining to the CLHQ -
Assuming the code is an anagram, I have considered the probability of all local landmarks and businesses. The prevailing solution is that the letters refer to 'CyberLife Headquarters."
Gavin pursed his lips, shrugging. "I mean, that makes sense. All the victims are androids, could be some kind of statement."
"That is not the only reason for my deduction", Nines informed, its eyes losing focus as its LED transitioned to yellow "Having studied Mr Scott's online behaviour, I thought it only perfunctory to conduct a background check."
"I'm guessing you found something?"
"Indeed. It would seem our friend has a long history with the company, dating back to early 2028. He found success as an android components trader - issuing supplies to the local warehouses" Nines gaze returned to normal, as its LED turned back to blue "The revolution called for the dissolving of his business, with no new models planned for production."
"So he would have gone bust around the same time CyberLife did."
Nines nodded. "It wouldn't be a leap to assume that this resulted in a hefty amount of resentment. Not only for Mr Scott, but for his contacts who were also made redundant. Perhaps they have been back in touch."
The detective took a few final drags from his cigarette before stubbing it out on the rail of the steps. "So what are you thinking? Our killer worked for CyberLife?"
"A knowledge of robotics and android manufacture would explain much of the killer's skillset. In all the cases we have investigated thus far, they seemed to possess an understanding of how best to neutralise their victims. Exploiting the MJ100's hearing fault and winning the trust of the Traci, convincing them that they were a client."
"I wouldn't say those things require a degree in Advanced Cyber Engineering," Gavin retorted. "What's to say the same thing couldn't be done by a schmoe like Scott?"
"The hearing fault of the MJ100 was only known to affect the models in its specific batch number. This was not widely reported. In addition, while a male Traci is not invulnerable, they are built for strength and durability. To take one down single-handedly is an impressive feat."
"...So why didn't you tell Fowler any of this?" Gavin questioned, "For fuck's sake, Nines, it might have helped when we were trying to make our case."
"I outlined my findings very clearly in my report. Perhaps you should read it at some point."
Gavin groaned, tucking his hands into his pockets as a strong gust of wind caught him off-guard. "So what gives? Why doesn't Fowler want us looking into Scott?"
"The Captain has made it clear that he is unwilling to accept any doubt relating to this case. While the details surrounding Mr Scott are suspicious, his connections to CyberLife mean nothing unless we can prove that our culprit also shares these connections."
"Yeah, but with our primary witness now off limits, how are we supposed to track down a suspect?" Gavin began trailing down the fire exit steps, careful not to slip on the ice. Nines followed behind, maintaining a close distance between them. "CyberLife Detroit must have had hundreds of engineers. Where do we start looking?"
"Our search needn't extend beyond those terminated within the last few months. Using what we already know about our killer, we can further narrow our list to those who fit the profile."
"How do we get the list in the first place?"
"Simple. We go to the Headquarters directly."
Gavin stalled in his tracks, causing Nines to halt behind him. His foot hovered between the final step and the pavement as he looked back at his partner incredulously. "I don't know if you've noticed, but CyberLife is in deep shit right now. Up to its neck in damage control. They aren't going to make it worse for themselves by implicating any former workers."
The android nodded at its partner before its lips curved into a cryptic smirk. "What if we weren't seeking to procure the names for legal purposes?"
Gavin paused, allowing his mind a second to catch up. His incredulous expression only grew as he realised what Nines was implying. "Are you saying we go undercover?"
"If you are up to the challenge, then yes."
"Fowler would never - "Gavin stopped himself, shooing Nines away from the steps and into the station's parking lot, ensuring no one could hear them. "I can't believe I'm the one saying this, but we could get in a lot of trouble. You sure you want to do this?"
"I can assure you, we are unlikely to face any severe disciplinary action. Should our actions prove justifiable", There was something bright in the android's eyes as it said this. A faint sparkle that betrayed mischievous intent. "I trust you won't give the game away."
The change in dynamic was surreal. It seemed absurd to Gavin that an android so practically minded was willing to take such an intense gamble. "You know, when you first joined the force, I had you pegged for a little plastic suck up. But you aren't like that at all, are you? You're a devious little shit."
Nines let out a noise that Gavin could only define as a laugh. Not a huff or exhale, but pure joy and amusement at its partner's teasing assertion, "I believe you said it yourself, Detective. I am full of surprises."

year to date little adventure journal, in case you care
jan 28: edinburgh, nadine shah. spent my sunday afternoon shopping for the important things (bed sheets and bath sheets) and the fun things (hair dye, book club novels). had a ramen lunch at the yo sushi on princes st watching sushi plates sail past the scott monument. dinner and drinks with friends then centre barrier at the assembly rooms. my 9th time seeing nadine, 3rd time since she started teasing the new album so 3rd time hearing topless mother, even light and greatest dancer live. she was sensational. always is.
jan 31: glasgow, depeche mode. as soon as i got back from seeing nadine i was on ticketmaster looking for a cheap seat. had to work on the train and in waverley station but worth it. arrived to find myself in the back row of the hydro but i loved it. nadine supporting was stunning, first time i've seen her from the back of a room and her voice filled the place. depeche was amazing too, a couple of hours of songs i adore including strangelove, behind the wheel, somebody, in your room, just can't get enough, policy of truth, black celebration, etc etc etc. i got up when they started walking in my shoes and danced through the entire show from that point on, safe in the knowledge that there was nobody behind me as i flailed around. it's given me the last-minute trip bug.
feb 9: glasgow, the 1975. a long trip with many connections to get to my airport hotel and then back out to the hydro. early entry door was so slow that i got in as the normal doors opened, damp from the rain, but i got a good spot down the front. didn't know the japanese house were making upbeat tunes now so their set was a surprise. still... at their very best was much like the show last year but loved it, especially the surprise of bagsy not in net. i swear matty made eye contact with me a few times; he's so good at that. staging was beautiful, as always. mad rush to get back to town for the airport bus.
feb 10: london, suedemas. a couple of months late this year because of tour in december. early flight to luton and a morning in maida vale, an afternoon in highgate wandering aimlessly in waterlow park and hanging out in the boogaloo. italian food and gossip and gifts at paddington, drinks then trekking across to hackney for an indie club that played 6 AM songs in the hour we were there. heartwarming to spend the day in the company of dear friends.
feb 22: leeds, nadine shah. filthy underneath on repeat on the train down. a little shopping time before dinner but the second hand record store prices appalled me. over at the brudenell there was no queue for the show so i hung in the lobby as nadine soundchecked her new songs. front and centre in the main room, 6 songs: the three she'd been playing at all her pre-album shows, plus keeping score, hyperrealism and french exit. stunning, again. she spotted me wearing her merch and gave me a big grin and wave. i love her.
feb 23: birmingham, the blackout. a huge french toast brunch at moose coffee, a train to brum, a wander round the bullring. ready for a weekend of big nostalgia seeing the band who defined my student years and first flush of independence; found myself singing along to the songs and doing all the little actions as if it had been weeks and not years since the last time. ended up on the barrier for the last couple of songs and snoz immediately pointed a drumstick at me with a grin. saw some old friends, waited a long time in the freezing cold to get a chat with each of the 6. lots of big hugs, catch ups, a "fucking love you!" greeting from Gavin. so special.
feb 24: london, the blackout. trains to kentish town, bumping into matthew on the way to the flat. an afternoon with my besties, tokyo diner bento, hot chocolates, the Cute exhibition. we hung out in the hello kitty disco and pretended to have a sleepover in the hannah diamond installation. seeing an old band with a new band friend - same set, different side of the stage. waited out in the cold to chat again, more big hugs and catch-ups including a long conversation with sean. so much easier to chat as adults when i pretend we're old friends and not a girl with the singer from the band she has a huge crush on. a perfect weekend.
mar 9: galashiels, swim school. a local gig, a band i barely know but have high hopes for. the kind of show where i can have a normal day and then hop on the bus in the evening; macarts, a place that feels like home now. swim school and her picture both great bands, the kind of gig where i didn't know a single song but wasn't wondering how many songs they had left.
coming up: sprints. a week of adventures with a brett anderson cameo or two. nadine again. olivia rodrigo. for one night only, the ninth wave. finally, eventually, being in front of suede again.

Reflective Statement Prompts
Where in the world am I?
I am in Auckland, New Zealand, visiting popular public parks such as Cornwall Park, western springs and craigavon park.
What are the particular, peculiar oddities, beautiful, raw, hidden gems of your surroundings?
I think the particular, peculiar oddities, beautiful, raw, hidden gems of these parks are the wide variety of nature and wildlife living throughout them like trees, plants, flowers, birds, farm animals and insects.
Are they interiors, exteriors, or both?
These parks are mainly exteriors but some of them have cafes and buildings that are open to the public.
Where do you connect with people and places?
I personally enjoy spending time with my family and friends at parks. I think parks are a great way for people to not only connect with each other by going on walks, bike rides, having picnics, playing games but also a way for people to connect with nature and our beautiful country.
What do these places look like?
Parks - Cornwall park, western springs and craigavon park
What is your visual story to tell?
The beautiful unique nature that these Auckland parks have to offer and the ways that people are currently using them.
Find a point of difference in your visual story, while also finding a genre of expression that suits you. How do other photographers tell a visual story? Name and describe the approaches to visual stories that other photographers in your genre use.
Compared to other landscape photographers what is my point of difference - what is your unique thing
Include the research of other photographers. At least 6 other relevant photographers that have influenced your inquiry + photographic approach should be discussed on your blog.

Review of The Bromance Book Club
Hi darlings, today I bring you the review of the book series: The Bromance Book Club The series consists of 5 books, soon 6, written by Lyssa Kay Adams.
The first book is called Bromance Book Club and was published in 2019.
As a note: Bromance refers to the platonic relationship between men who have an emotional closeness as if they were brothers.
In the first installment, we have Gavin Scott, one of the best players in his American baseball league, dedicated to his work, he spends his days training and going to promotional events. However, his life in his house is the opposite. He has missed so many of the twins' events and dates with her wife, Thea, that it force her to file for divorce. Desperate not to lose his house, his daughters, and most importantly, the love of his life Thea; Gavin gets drunk in a hotel room where his teammates, and other strangers, find him. They reveal to him that they are willing to help him fix his marriage on the condition that he is completely honest about his life with them. Gavin accepts, and that's how he enters the Bromance book club. The rules of this club: 1. Never talk about the book club 2. Be honest with all club members 3. Read the book.
One of the most attractive factors of these novels is the emotional connection between the men. I think the author manages to reflect very well how these connections where priority is given to mental health, self-reflection and making them take responsibility for their actions help men improve as people.
Another aspect that I like is the tension between the couple. This being a relationship of a married couple, it helps a lot in feeling comfortable with the dynamic between the characters. Unlike other books, this is a couple who already know each other and understand the other person's body language. The romance between the protagonists is well structured. The scenes denote chemistry and a very beautiful connection that has been created in those three years of relationship, but it also denotes an introduction to a new dynamic between them that improves them as couples and people.
Something I loved was the inclusion of the protagonist's stutter. The author managed to include it in a very natural way and make it feel like an important part of the relationship between the characters. At the same time, how they work together as parents and deal with their relationship problems. I still think they need to polish a lot more, but they have reached the stage where they are both open to working on their relationship.
Futhermore, a strong aspect of the book is the development of the characters, I feel that they manage to recognize their flaws and grow from them. The only thing I would like is to see if these changes are not simply to preserve the relationship and that there really is a change in both of us. A mention of Gavin managing his athletic career better with Thea's projects and even the inclusion of couples therapy.
An extra is that I enjoyed tje comedy. There are too many lines that made me laugh, the comedy is good in this book (even if it is “accidental”).
Now what I didn't like. Oh, the things I disliked about this book.
Let's start with the first thing, the “inclusion” of a hispanic guy in the story. First of all, the spanish is written poorly in the book, it would be appreciated if an editor would notice that. Reading Yan Feliciano's scenes left a bad taste in my mouth.
Tip: Do not publish texts that use languages that you do not master, or that you do not have someone that is a native/dominant of the language that can give you feedback about it.
Second, the generalizations of men and women. There are so many times characters mention like “Men love it when women…”, “…it's kryptonite for any woman,” and “Every woman remembers this…”. It is uncomfortable and arrogant to have these generalizations.
And finally, the characters of Liv and Mack.
Let's start with Liv, she is more justified in acting rude and pushy, because she is afraid that her sister will end up hurt. I didn't appreciate how she tries to antagonize the main couple, considering they have daughters together. However, she is a good element to create tension and obstacles in the relationship.
But Mack, he is one of the most unpleasant characters I have ever read. No spoilers for the second book, but how offensive, cynical, arrogant, arrogant and hateful he is ruins most of the scenes. At first, I thought he was going to be a character who would clash a lot with the protagonist, but they would have form an honest and self-deprecating friendship. But in the Thanksgiving scene, I realized that he is just a man who likes feeling superior and the attention he gets from knowing that “he hasn't done anything wrong.” The simple mention that everyone lets him do it because “it doesn't mean anything”, but before that one of the characters' wives mentions that she dislikes him because of his attitude. It gives me the feeling that he would be the type of person who claims to be a feminist, but he manipulates his partners to make them think that “they” are the problem for not appreciating him.
The book was a disappointment, but I would recommend it as a fun read. Yes I would give it 4 stars for the romance, friendship and character development. And as on the scale of hot scenes I would give it a 3. It has very good scenes between the protagonists and fulfills itself as a romantic comedy book. But, I would have liked to see the beginning of this book club, instead of seeing it already established.
Have you already read this saga? What did you think of the first book? What did you like about this book? What did they dislike? Have you read other Lyssa Kay Adams novels? What do you think of a book club for men to improve their relationships?
