So I was thinking about Claire Redfield (as you do) and how much of an insane badass she is for not only holding her own in Raccoon City, but also protecting a child throughout the entire nightmare, and specifically how, for all intents and purposes, Claire in Resident Evil 2 during Raccoon City and Ashley in Resident Evil 4 are the closest thing to peers that they have.

Both of them are college-aged girls with zero combat/survival experience who've been dropped into a zombie-infested hellhole and have to find their way out, but Ashley is so starkly different of a character to Claire.

From a writing standpoint, Ashley is a very literal damsel in distress character. She's young, she's inexperienced, and she does, in fact, need a man to save her (no shade, I'd probably need Leon and his rippling abs to save me too). Now, she does grow significantly as a character throughout the events of the fourth game, and even gets to save Leon a couple of times, but she's still very much a young girl in need of help

Now, in comparison, Claire Redfield is a damsel in distress in the same way Meg from Hercules is

Claire is actually canonically younger in Resident Evil 2 than Ashley is in 4, being only 19, but goddamn is this girl not going to let that stop her. And while Claire does have a bit more skill with self-defense, all that really adds up to is forcing Chris to teach her knife fighting and probably going to the shooting range with him a couple of times. Claire is very confident in herself, but she doesn't have much real world experience to back that up. Girl rode her motorcycle into a zombie-infested city with nothing but a gun (where did she get this gun? We don't know) to do a welfare check on her brother and came out less scathed than the literal cop she made friends with.

And then, there's Sherry. Claire finds a random child hiding in the police station, saying that she's looking for her mom, and makes it her personal mission to protect her at all costs. And when said girl gets taken by the literal chief of police? Claire grabs her grenade launcher and decides that's gonna be his problem because by god is she taking care of that little girl.

By the time they make it out of the city Sherry might as well be Claire's biological daughter, and she is not about to let anything happen to her (forthcoming events out of her control notwithstanding)

Which, in a way, honestly I think makes 19-year-old Claire Redfield actually a closer peer to Ethan Winters.

Ethan is a nearly 30-year-old man who works an office job (I think he's IT?) and whose wife went missing a few years ago. When he finds out she's actually alive he grabs a flashlight and hops in his car to drive to Louisiana to bring her home.

This man finds out that his wife has been possessed, and he doesn't give a shit. He loves her. He made a vow to care for and protect her, and by god is he going to test the limits of 'til death do us part. He takes on an entire family of fucked up hillbillies and literal mold demons to bring her home. And when he does? They have a daughter, and Ethan is ready to sacrifice the world for her too.

All of Resident Evil 8 is just him fighting a pantheon of demons to save his baby girl armed with nothing but a gun he grabbed off a dead guy (he's from Texas, so I'm not gonna question it) and his innate knowledge of how to make life-saving elixirs. And yes, he does save both his wife and his daughter

Idk, I just think it's interesting that Claire and Ashley are so similar in age and life experience, but Claire winds up having the most in common with the Awkward Suburban Dad in the end

Getting in the Mood for CleonWeek with a Leon Study: How Each Version of Leon Would React to Claire Asking for the D

It’s almost CleonWeek, which means it’s time to dive deep into our favorite couple—Claire and Leon! Now, while Claire’s been consistently badass throughout the years, Leon... well, Leon’s gone through quite the glow-up (and occasional glow-down). Depending on the game, movie, or platform, he’s either a fresh-faced rookie or a grizzled veteran with a questionable amount of hair gel and alcohol in his system.

So, let’s play a little game and imagine how the many different versions of Leon would react to the ultimate request:

Rookie Leon

Claire: (in a low, frustrated voice) “Leon… I need you to fuck me.”

(Leon blinks, caught completely off guard by the directness. His eyes widen, and his mouth opens as if he’s about to say something but no words come out. A flush creeps up his neck, and he runs a hand through his hair awkwardly.)

Leon: “W-Wait, what? You—uh… I mean, are you… serious?”

(His voice cracks slightly, his usual composure shattered. He shifts his weight from one foot to the other, looking at Claire like he's not sure if he's supposed to laugh, panic, or melt on the spot.)

Claire: (staring at him intensely, biting her lip) “Yes. I’m serious.”

(Leon swallows hard, his heart pounding. His thoughts race, the tension between them electric and undeniable. He takes a small step toward her, still unsure if this is really happening.)

Leon: “I… I mean, if you really… Are you sure you’re okay? I just—wow. Okay.”

(He lets out a nervous laugh, his voice trailing off, but there’s a heat in his eyes now as he looks at her, his uncertainty melting into something much bolder.)

Leon: “Because if this is what you want… I’m not gonna say no.”

(His hands move to her waist, hesitantly at first, before pulling her close, the tension between them snapping like a thread pulled too tight.)

Vendetta Leon

Claire: (Her voice low and breathless, eyes dark with desire.) “Leon… I need you to fuck me.”

(Leon pauses mid-movement, his sharp blue eyes locking onto hers. There’s a flicker of surprise, but it’s quickly replaced by something darker, more primal. He straightens up, rolling his shoulders slightly, that familiar cocky smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.)

Leon: (voice low and gravelly) “You sure about that, Claire?”

(He steps closer, his presence intense, radiating heat and confidence. His hand brushes along her arm, almost teasingly slow, as he leans in, his lips inches from hers. He watches her, his gaze hard and penetrating, waiting for her to give in completely.)

Claire: (She holds his gaze, unflinching, her voice almost a growl.) “Yeah, I’m sure.”

(Leon’s smirk deepens. He grabs her waist with a sudden roughness, pulling her against him. His breath is hot against her ear as he speaks.)

Leon: “Good… because I don’t do anything halfway.”

(Without another word, he kisses her, hard and hungry, all hesitation gone as he pushes her back against the wall. His hands roam her body with purpose, his grip firm, and his movements decisive—like a man who knows exactly what he wants and how to get it.)

Death Island Leon

Claire: (Her voice low, a mix of frustration and longing.) “Leon… I need you to fuck me.”

(Leon freezes, his usual stoic expression faltering for a second. He stares at her, processing the words, clearly caught off guard. His eyes narrow slightly as if trying to gauge if she really means it, the weight of everything between them hanging heavy in the air.)

Leon: (in a quiet, serious tone) “Claire… are you sure?”

(There’s no smirk, no cockiness—just raw intensity in his eyes as he steps closer. He’s cautious, almost hesitant, like he’s fighting the tension in his own body. His hand hovers near her waist, not quite touching her, waiting for her to confirm what they both know is about to happen.)

Claire: (She steps closer, her eyes locked on his, unwavering.) “Yes. I’m sure.”

(Leon lets out a slow breath, his face softening, though his jaw tightens with the restraint he’s trying to maintain. He moves in, his hand sliding to her hip, firm but careful, as if he's trying not to lose control too fast.)

Leon: (his voice low and husky now, eyes searching hers) “Alright… but this isn’t just some moment we’ll forget about. You know that, right?”

(He pulls her closer, his grip tightening, and the intensity between them spikes as his lips brush against hers. He holds back for just a second longer, searching her face for any doubt, before finally giving in, his kiss deep, desperate, and laced with all the emotion he’s been holding back.)

Leon: (murmuring against her lips) “I’ve wanted this for a long time, Claire…”

There was something different in his face, something off and without thinking about it, Jill tilted her head and studied him for a moment without answering.

The silence that lengthened between them was oddly peaceful while she thought.

He still had on his sunglasses, which was an oddity for him in his own home. Even the office only had one domed light within the space, and it cast shadows across both of their faces.

"What is it?" Wesker asked as he leaned forward slightly and brought his right hand to rest along his thigh. He still wore his black gloves and ever so gently, his four fingers rubbed against his thumb in a circular motion while he watched her.

"Captain, as impeccable as you are with reading silences, you do have some of your own tells," she answered next.

"Do I?" he mused before his thumb and forefinger paused. As if he already knew.

"Mhm," she continued, daring to reach her hand forward to grab his. "They used to train me to hunt men like you, you know."

The button to his right leather glove popped gently in her fingers while she lifted her eyes to where she thought his were behind the sunglasses.

With her fingers pulling the glove off slowly, she continued, "Men who yell, threaten, and make noise either go for distraction or display." Her smile was a closed envelope "Either suits me. If I could hear them, I could find them." The glove dropped to the floor.

"But you, captain?" The button for his left glove came undone. "I have to find you, and when I do, I simply watch." The skin of his palms was calloused as the pads of her fingers trailed after the material. "And what I see is sometimes the loudest of them all."

His fingers enclosed over hers before she could pull it back.

They sat facing one another in their chairs. Captain Wesker leaned forward further, and she didn't think she imagined the husky tone that came next.

"And what do you see?"

"You're in pain," she answered before her hand pulled from his and she slowly reached up for the sunglasses.

When he caught her wrist, she flinched from the speed but relaxed when she heard his exhale.

"Don't." He lowered her hand from his face. "Full marks for perception. You've found me at a disadvantage, but surely a headache isn't all you've figured out."

"No," she agreed with a pointed look that flashed his way. "But I'd rather see your eyes when I tell you that."

"I'm sure you would," he obliged in a drawl before he released her arm. "Let me see your reports."

🐇 ⇢ do you prefer writing original characters, reader inserts, or a mix of both? 

ehhhh neither really. this is not to say i haven't done either (a secret for anyone who has read my tma fic: i literally put myself into my gerry keay character study) but my general preference is being boring and Only using canonical characters for anyone who is named and important to the story. i'll do background OCs for stuff like idk the cashier in my national treasure grocery store fic, also ANOTHER tidbit for anyone who read the nt polyfic: there's an "OC" named claire in there who i was just like eh fuck it it's claire redfield from resident evil while writing bc i thought it was funny. i used to write soooo many reader/self inserts but i don't usually do it. i'm very much a buckles-down-on-one-single-canon-character-or-dynamic-to-the-exclusion-of-everything-else gal.

well i'm getting a paper published which is very cool! next month i get to go see the US total solar eclipse and i'm excited 'cause i saw the 2017 one too so this is a symmetry moment. annnnnd hm. i've been given the okay from my advisor to take a gap semester if i need it this fall which i think i do so i'm relieved about that.

i dunno probably if saying "i'm laughing so hard" in the tags of a post when i only laughed in my head counts. i don't like lying because i have anxiety and catholic level guilt or something but i used to do it soooo much as a kid like i'd lie about having read book series my friend loved bc i didn't want to read them but wanted to let her talk about them to me. i don't do it so much anymore because again, hate doing it. i'm really good at it in card games tho. technically the most recent lie i've told would be relating to being closeted lol.

I don't actually dislike Chris, but there are some things going against him. He isn't appearing in the new remakes (because he just naturally doesn't appear in those games), yet he's the series mascot (of sorts.) It's common for a series mascot to garner some resentment (for example, look at how many people hate Pikachu in the Pokemon fandom) especially if they think they don't "deserve" the attention. This resentment can build up to frankly unwarranted levels, especially since Chris *does* have the most appearances, even if they're not leagues above some other characters.

Unfortunately, Chris also doesn't come across as very interesting in one of his stand-out games, RE1. I don't think this is his fault as I also found the other characters in that game pretty uninteresting, but I can see someone not caring about Chris in RE1, never getting around to a game or movie where he has a personality they like, and coming to resent him for "stealing" spots from other characters.

So it's kind of ironic that Chris can both be hated for having too much screentime and too little... I think if we got to see him more in the remake games (not re1 remake) then people might come around to like him more. I really cannot blame people for not playing every single game in the Resident Evil franchise -- or only wanting to play the new remakes -- and then getting confused why this guy is the mascot instead of Claire, Jill, or Leon. But this vitriol that then develops where they hate on a character they don't understand is entirely uncool, and I have to imagine the majority of these people haven't taken the time to try and understand him.

But I'm not a Chris hater, and I don't study them or really engage with Chris content much at all, so I don't know! I just get a vibe from Chris's situation that I've seen in other fandoms.

Firstly, thank you for sending me this! Secondly, I can't pin this Chris hate on the newer fans who got in on the remakes. I probably should've been more clear at my initial question, but when I talk about Chris hate, I mean from long-time fans. From people who've been around since RE1 remake or even RE5 at least. That sort of deep seated Chris dislike/hate that I've seen referred to as "chris posting" from long time fans.

Like with the previous anon, I understand over saturation, and I know it's Capcom's fault. But when it comes to being uninteresting, I can say the exact same thing for Ethan! I don't give two craps about Ethan because he's legit the most milk toast of the protagonists you can play as in the game series. Chris may not be interesting, but he does have the whole dedicated to the cause aspect going for him just like Jill. Plus, in the original game he was funny. He had some campy one liners, and some of the puzzles he could only do with Rebecca showed off both their characters and limitations. Plus, the reason so many people favored Jill in the first game is because she has 2 slots more for holding things in RE1, which will make the game slightly easier with backtracking.

In addition, Leon is the one usurping the other mascot spot right beside Chris. If anyone is taking Jill's spotlight, it's him. Hell, Death Island is supposed to be about Jill, but guess who was on the cover of most of the promotional advertising with Chris when they were teasing it? Leon was on so much stuff people were genuinely worried he'd be side-lining Jill in the film.

I'm not sure I'll get any other anons about this, but I kind of want to believe the Chris hate comes from people thinking he's this "ultra jock" which I'm guessing people are now labeling as "mega chad" in the same instance. I can definitely feel that kind of hatred is also where the terrible "continue the redfield line" joke (WHICH HE NEVER SAYS) comes from.

3-Sentence Fics: Top 10 Favorite ‘Lees of 2021

So you may recall that I made a list of my favorite lees that I wrote about in my first year of being on Tumblr.

I’ve got a couple fic/headcanon requests that I’m working on right now (next up is a Xiaolin Showdown one!), but just to blow off some steam in between projects, I thought I’d come up with a few little micro-drabbles for characters I like. :)

Neytiri (James Cameron’s Avatar)

The blue Pandoran natives all gathered in a circle, their legs crossed, chanting and bowed in reverence to Eywa, and the bored Jake could not get Neytiri to break her concentration or pay attention to him…so he decided to have a little fun.

Slowly, the tip of his tail dragged across Neytiri’s bare foot, and suddenly, the Na’vi princess let out a loud, giggling snort and leapt into the air, blushing and bug-eyed.

The other Omaticaya stared at her in disapproval, and Jake chuckled under his breath as she furiously slapped his arm.

Ursula (Kiki’s Delivery Service)

“Wow, you’ve really never done a sculpture like this before?” Kiki asked with delight as she watched her artist friend slap wet clay into the shape of a dreamlike creature…another fantasy piece inspired by her.

“No, but I think it’s coming together well, so don’t distract me!” Ursula replied, but of course, her comment just inspired the giggly witch to reach forward and pinch her sides.

“Eh-HAA-Heheh, Heh…Hehey, no tickling, Heheh Ha-Ha Ha!” the artist began to laugh gleefully and squirmed around her sculpture, ticklish vibrations wiggling across her belly.

Kiki (same)

“AHH, Ha-Ha Ha-Ha! *gasp* Ha-HUH-Heh! *gasp* Ha-Ha Ha!” Kiki shrieked with hysterical laughter and flailed around in the grass.

Tombo and his punk friends were holding the poor witch girl’s ankles down and taking turns tickling her feet relentlessly, and she couldn’t do anything to hide her embarrassment despite her attempts to kick them away.

While the others laughed and teased Kiki about how absurdly ticklish she was, the widest, goofiest smile Kiki had ever seen was plastered all over Tombo’s face…he could only giggle along with her.

Link (The Legend of Zelda)

Once, while tumbling away from concussive laser blasts, Link was grabbed by the ankle and hoisted into the air by the claw of a Guardian.

The clunky machine had been programmed to seek out other Sheikah technology, and unsure of what it was doing, it extended another claw to ruffle through Link’s tunic as the hero dangled upside down.

Link fought to keep from laughing, but the Guardian was probing the ticklish spots on his ribs and stomach, and it took him a second to fire an arrow at the machine’s eye and break free.

Victoria (Cats 2019)

Jellylorum was fitting Victoria for a new pair of tap shoes so that she could join in Skimbleshanks’ dance routine, but every time the tape measure pulled against her lily-white foot, Victoria couldn’t stop herself from laughing…and Jelly loved it.

“Awww, what’s the matter…” teased the giggly orange tabby in her most brutally sing-songy baby voice, “…does someone have ticklish toes?”

“Mmmm, Hmhm-Hm-Hm!! *squeak* Wait wait, j-just give me a sehecond!” Victoria giggled, blushed, and pulled at her ears in a panicked frenzy, struggling to sit still, and it was obvious to her by then that Jelly was tickling her soles on purpose.

Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil 8age)

“HO-Ho Ha-Ha Ha! *heave* HA-HA HA-HA!! R-RELEASE ME! Ah-Haha!! I COMMAND YOU!!” came the loud, booming laughter that echoed throughout metallic halls.

Claire Redfield had wrapped her whole right arm around Lady Dimitrescu’s foot, mercilessly tickling it with her strumming nails, and it wiggled and flexed but couldn’t escape.

The tall vampire lady had been taken to a BSAA laboratory and restrained in the medical bay for scientific study, and (perhaps out of a warped desire to make her suffer) Claire was surprisingly eager to assist in the neural conductivity tests.

Luca & Alberto (Luca)

Alberto sat in the sand with his legs spread apart, biting his lip in determination, and Luca started tickling his left foot, which began to wiggle.

“Remember you gotta hold still for one minute; that’s the rule!” Luca laughed, skittering green fingers around his friend’s toes.

“PFFFF; Heehee-Heehee Heehee! *gasp* AHHHH!! ….Hnhn-Hn! *gasp* Hihih-Hihih! Heehee! *gasp* Ahhhh; it tick-llllllles!” the blue and purple fish boy couldn’t control his giggling as he thrashed around.

“Alright; now it’s your turn!” laughed the eager and vengeful Alberto as he grabbed the ankle of his reclining friend. Looking around toward a patch a grass nearby, Alberto saw a cattail plant dancing in the wind, and quickly seized it to use as a tickle weapon.

“…Heh! *gasp* Heheh-Haha Haha-Haha Haha! …Heh! Heheh-Heh!” Luca doubled over, giggling and clutching his tummy while the plant stroked up and down on his foot, much to Alberto’s glee.

Lisa (Ponyo)

Thanks to her chaotic schedule, it wasn’t uncommon for Lisa to collapse face-down on her couch and immediately start snoring…so she sometimes missed things. Sosuke called out “mom” multiple times in a row as if he were reenacting that famous Stewie Griffin moment, gently shaking her shoulders and poking her, but nothing had an effect until his fingertip casually jabbed her side.

Lisa immediately sprung to life, her bed-head all askew, giggling and tossing pillows aside, which was quite a fun discovery for Sosuke & Ponyo (who had no idea that she was that ticklish).

Toph (the other Avatar)

One of the fun things about Momo was his ability to noiselessly glide through the air…the better to sneak up on Toph and land on her back.

“GYAHH HA-HA HA-HA!! *heave* HA-HA HA-HaaAaAaAaaang, g-het your mangy fleabahag OFF ME!!” the Earthbender screamed and fell to the ground, pounding her fist and sending shards of rock everywhere.

Momo had been thrown at her and was scurrying around in a panic, his four limbs scratching and grabbing all over Toph’s back and sides, but unfortunately for her, the other Gaang members were having far too much fun just watching her get tickled.

I totally would have included Kate Bishop on this list bc she’s literally perfect, but unfortunately I didn’t start writing about her until after my anniversary post. 😆
