the thing about standpoint epistemology / "listen to X voices" and so on is that, like. it strikes me as another instance of a good rule of thumb handled in completely the wrong way.

like, it definitely is a bad thing if you get all your opinions on racism from white people, or all your opinions on antisemitism from Christians, or all your opinions on transmisogyny from people who are not transfem!

but starting and ending the conversation at "listen to X voices" is, as many others have pointed out, a great way to 1. trick yourself into thinking that you aren't making decisions about which X-people you agree with, and 2. give yourself an excuse to write off any and all disagreement with those takes as coming from Uninformed Outsiders
