HONK! CRASH!
Danny woke up with a jerk. He laid in bed for a long moment, staring at the ceiling and listening to the chaos downstairs. He could hear something running around the house honking, his dad yelling, and the sound of a gun going off. He didn’t have enough sleep to deal with this. All he had wanted was to sleep before school, but was that ever going to happen? No! Why was it always him that had to deal with everything?
“GRAB IT MADDIE, IT’S GETTING AWAY!” Dad yelled.
“I KNOW, JACK!” Mom yelled, shooting her gun again.
CRASH!
Danny rubbed his eyes with a deep sigh, tossing the covers off of him and putting his feet onto the floor. Just as he was about to get up, he heard thumping coming up the stairs. Great! Now he would get in trouble if he didn’t try to head off whatever was running around their house. He ran over to his bedroom door and yanked it open, running down the hall until he was face to face with a black duck. It wasn’t even a ghost! The duck had a patch of blue around its eyes that looked like a mask, and blue markings down the side of it. In his confusion, the duck slipped between his legs and kept running down the hall.
Jazz screamed from somewhere downstairs. “There’s another one!”
“IVE GOT IT!” Dad yelled.
Cursing, he ran after the duck just as his Mom ran up the stairs. He grabbed the duck off of the ground, ignoring it as it hissed at him and tried to bite him.
“What the fuck?” He asked Mom.
“Language, sweetie.” Maddie said while she aimed the gun at the duck in Danny’s hands.
“What’s going on?” He had to raise his voice to be heard over the duck squealing.
CRASH!
They both ignored the sounds coming from downstairs. Danny decided it wasn’t his immediate problem, so he said nothing on what sounded like Dad plowing through a wall at top speed while running.
“We thought these ducks were ghosts at first, but they’re not. We don’t know where they came from.” Maddie took a step towards him, a frown on her face. “They came out of the portal.”
The duck was still trying to bite him. It couldn’t even break the skin of his hand, so he didn’t try to fight it.
“Weird looking duck.” He commented. “Ducks aren’t blue.”
The duck squawked loudly in protest.
“GOT IT!” Jack yelled from downstairs.
“Can we like
throw it back in the portal?” He asked.
“It could come back in. We don’t know where in the portal it came from.” Mom said, lowering the gun now that the duck had stopped trying to escape.
“You think another dimension?” He asked as they walked downstairs.
“Perhaps. For now we’ll put them in the holding pod and figure out what to do next.” Mom led him down to the lab.
When they got down there, he added the duck in his hands to the cell that housed the other duck. The other duck was differently colored from the first. It was black, with green feet, a green mask around its eyes, and red markings along its body. The duck seemed to be howling bloody murder.
“This one put up a fight!” Dad said proudly. “Too bad it’s not a ghost.”
“Great. I can go back to sleep now, right?” He asked tiredly.
“You sure you don’t want to help with the interdimensional search? You’ve always been the best at this.” Mom offered.
“No thanks.” He declined, yawning. “But if they’re still here when I wake up then I’ll help.”
“Okay. Good night, sweetie.” Mom kissed his forehead.
“Night mom, Night dad.” He waved as he walked back upstairs.
As soon as he got back upstairs, he found Clockwork sitting on his bed. He screamed in frustration.

Fantasies
Summary:
Danny and Maddie have a casual conversation about what it would be like if he were on her lab table.
It had been a month since Danny told his parents that he was Phantom.
Maddie was terrible at hiding her desires.
The reveal didn’t make her curiosity go away, if anything it was strengthened. He was a hybrid! An impossible mix between life and death! The perfect specimen living under her own roof!
Danny could tell from the way she looked at him when she thought he wasn’t looking; her gaze was hungry, longing, wondering. She still wanted to see inside of him, still wanted to tear him apart, still wanted to rip him open and see what made him tick.
She still had her fantasies, even if she could never live them out.
He had taken away the chance for her to do that guiltlessly, and for that he couldn’t help but feel a little guilty himself.
The two were sitting on the couch watching a movie, Danny laid on his side with his head in his mother’s lap.
Soon the movie was over and there was a comfortable silence, neither said a thing until Danny turned his head to face Maddie.
“Hey mom?” He asked quietly.
“Yes sweetie?” She responded with the same volume.
“I know you still want to dissect me.” He said without hesitation or a change of facial expression.
Maddie’s face reddened. “I-I
what, no- why would I still- of course not!” She stammered.
“I can see it on your face, that scientific curiosity of yours. It’s ok, it’s not wrong to dream is it?”
“Danny I
I would never and will never do anything like that to you, I promise, I love you.”
“You know you could just tell me what you’d do if you did do that.” If she couldn’t actually do it, maybe she’d enjoy narrating what she would do.
“Danny, I don’t think
 you don’t have to
” he could see she was already starting to break and wanting to give in to the idea.
“It’s good to talk about what you’re feeling, right? And it’s ok, I won’t tell anyone.” He pressed.
She sighed, dropping back down to the volume the conversation started in. “Are you sure you’re alright with hearing it?” Her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Yeah, go ahead.” He assured.
“Alright, well
I guess I’d strap you down to the table with the ecto-energy-blockers. Also, it’d be vivisection dear, not dissection.” Her voice changed to something similar to that of a mother reading her child a story book before bedtime, gentle and soft and loving, even though the words were anything but. “They’d be on your wrists, ankles, thighs, upper arms and neck.”
Her fingers lightly graced his throat, sending a shiver down his spine. He momentarily considered bailing out, telling her he absolutely did not want to hear exactly what she wanted to do to him, but he thought better of it.
Forcing a smirk onto his face he said, “What? No gag or anything?”
She smiled down at him. “The lab is completely soundproof.” Oh. She wanted to hear him scream. He swallowed the lump in his throat.
She turned him over from his side onto his back. “The first incision would be from one end of your collarbone to the other.” She said as she traced a finger across his upper chest. He could easily picture a scalpel instead of a finger, his bare skin instead of the fabric of his sweatshirt, the harsh lighting of the lab instead of the soft dim lights of the living room.
He sucked in a breath and she softly chuckled, whether it was because she noticed his reaction or she was just enjoying herself with this fantasy, he couldn’t tell, but it was scary either way.
She continued on with her narrative. “The second one would be over your hips.” Tracing her finger from where you could feel one side of his hips to the other. He could almost feel her sharp nail trying to pierce his skin, the sensation making him almost arch his back above the couch.
Her eyes were glued to his torso, her body almost shaking with excitement, she was lost in the story.
“And the final one would cut straight down the middle of your body, starting from the first slice and ending at the bottom one.” She whipped her finger along his body hard and quick, he let out a tiny whimper.
“Both flaps would be pulled to the side and pinned, so next all that’s in the way of your organs is your ribcage.” She tapped on his ribs. “I’d expect them to be black instead of white considering what happened to your hair and suit, also the rare occasion when someone gets a photo of when you were that injured.
“I’d have to use a bonesaw to get through them, in that case I’d cut right along here.” She used both hands to show the saw’s path across his shuttering chest.
“I’d be able to pull the top of your ribcage right out,” She gestured yanking out his ribs with her arms. “leaving your lungs, heart, and hopefully core completely exposed. Imagine me having unobstructed access to your core.” She rested a hand on the middle of his chest, right over where his core sat.
“I’d stroke it with my bare hand if it wouldn’t immediately give me frostbite, since you’re an ice core.” She said longingly. She was mere inches away from what she wanted, yet could never have it.
“The very essence of your being in the palm of my hand.” She whispered.
Danny attempted speaking a few words through his internal panic. “If you just wanted to see my core you wouldn’t have bothered opening up such a large space.” His voice was shaky and his words unsure.
She seemed to have snapped out of obsessing over his core and continued on with her story. “Right, so I’d measure and weigh each of your organs, starting with your spleen and kidneys,” She pointed to each respective location inside his body. “and working up to your stomach and heart.” She graced his side with her hand. “I’d have to measure your lungs at the climax of both inhaling and exhaling, so you’d have to hold your breath for me.” She looked toward his face.
He let out an empty laugh. “Not sure I’d even be able to listen to you it’d hurt so bad.”
She smirked at him. “I have my ways.” He gulped.
“I’d have to get scans and readings on your core. The first time we measured your power level you were a level five, the last time we measured you, you were a level seven, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a level eight or nine this time around.
“We estimated that Pariah was a level nine, and you beat him.” She remembered.
“Yeah, just barely though, and that was with help and the ecto-skeleton you and dad made.” His voice was still a little raspy.
“Anyway, I’ll have the computer draw power maps, I can’t wait to see how your core handles distributing energy around your human body, and what happens when I cut off that energy for a short period of time.” She said with a sadistic grin on her face.
He caught her change from ‘would’ to ‘will’, but didn’t think to speak anything of it, he was terrified of her at that moment.
“When I’m done exploring your torso,” She continued, “I’ll move on to your throat.” She said gripping his neck.
“I’ll start with two incisions on either side of your neck, here and here.” She dragged her nail along both sides of his neck, just in front of his major artery. “Then a slice right along where your jaw meets your neck. Then I just pull the flap down and pin it to see the inside of your throat. Your vocal cords will probably be sore from screaming and sobbing.” She said with no hint of remorse.
“I wonder where your wail comes from, does it manifest in your core then you let it out? Or is it just a scream amplified by your ghostly vocal cords?” She thought aloud.
“Sam’s said it’s my dying screams.” He admitted.
“Really?” He nodded. “Well that would explain way it’s your most powerful ability, it’s the most prominent in your memory.
“After I finish inspecting your vocal cords, both human and ghostly, I’ll start with your eyes.” She said so nonchalantly he almost had to do a double take.
“M-my eyes?” He said as she placed her hand on the side of his face, thumb brushing his eyelashes.
“Mhm, the eyes of a ghost are able to pick up light even when you’re invisible; when a person is overshadowed, the eye color is about your only reliable tell other than how they act; your eyes didn’t invert color like the rest of you did when you half-died, they just turned green.
“I’ll have to keep your eye open with a clamp so I can extract it without interference. Then I can dissect it.” Her finger was less than an eighth of an inch away from his eyeball.
She pulled away, pushed Danny out of her lap and stood up, glancing at the clock.
“Alright, I think it’s time to go to bed now, don’t you think?”
He nodded, still a little dazed from the sudden movement.
“Come on, let’s head upstairs.” They walked up the stairs together to Danny’s room.
Maddie held up her hand to hold the face of her child. “Thank you Danny, for listening. I really appreciate it.” She pulled him close to give him a kiss on the forehead.
“Of course mom, if you need to talk I’m here to listen.” He said with a forced smile as he got under the covers of his bed.
“I love you Danny.”
“Love you too mom, goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
He may not be able to let her live out her fantasies, but this’ll have to do.

Downward Spiral Part 3
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three:
Saturday is pretty quiet in regards to ghosts, and Danny is definitely grateful for it.  He sleeps long into the afternoon, and wakes up significantly less exhausted.  He manages to finish most of the homework due on Monday, with enough time to do the rest the next day.  He doesn’t get to cleaning the lab, but being well rested with homework done is progress enough that he gives himself the rest of the afternoon to relax and play Doomed.
It’s significantly harder without Sam and Tucker there to help, though, and eventually he sits back in his chair with an irritated sigh.
A second later, a knock comes on the door, and Mom pokes her head in.  “Danny, honey, are you still going to clean the lab like I asked you to?”
“I was gonna do it tomorrow Mom,” Danny says, spinning his chair to face her.  “Is that okay?”
“Sure sweetie, just wanted to make sure it was still on your mind,” Mom says, and starts to head back out.
“Uh, wait, Mom,” Danny says, and she stops.
“Is there any chance I could go to the park today?” Danny asks, tensing up.  He has a pretty good feeling he knows what the answer will be.
“You’re still grounded for another three months, young man,” she says, sure enough.  “But you can go sit in the backyard if you want.”
Danny sighs and slumps down in his chair.  “Thanks, Mom.”
“Anytime, sweetie!” his Mom calls, and heads out of the room.
What Danny wouldn’t give for Sam to have actually taught him those sneaking out tips she mentioned.  A second later, however, he glances back towards the door as a thought strikes him.  He walks over and opens his door again.
Dad’s talking loudly in the living room, sounding like he’s doing some kind of demonstration on a new ghost weapon.
He’ll be doing that a while.  Danny closes his door, locks it, and changes into Phantom.  Then he turns intangible and slips out the wall, waiting to turn visible again until he’s far enough away from the house.
“Let’s see Sam do that,” he says with a small grin.
He brushes off the small tinge of guilt at sneaking out.  He sneaks out to do patrol all the time, this isn’t that different.  Sure, patrols aren’t for fun and this is just him being a dumb disobediant teenager, but whatever.
He makes quick time in getting to the park, making sure to turn intangible as he hovers over it, looking for Sam and Tucker.
It takes him a couple of minutes to realize they aren’t anywhere.  He searches the whole park over a couple of times, then flies down and turns human behind a tree near a fence, out of sight from everyone.
They aren’t here.  His observational skills have gotten better since he’s had to search for ghosts from high in the air.  Sam and Tucker aren’t here, meaning either something’s wrong, or they lied to him.
Danny flies probably a little too fast to Sam’s house, and thankfully finds her walking out the door as he gets there.
For a moment, he breathes a sigh of relief, but then he sees Sam turn and walk in the opposite direction of the park, very casually, but with purpose.
She’s clearly going somewhere else.  So they did lie to him.
Okay, that’s
fine.  That’s fine, he’s not entitled to know all of their business, and they don’t have to tell him everything.  He lies to them often enough about far more important things than hanging out at the park.  That’s fine.  He shouldn’t be getting upset, that would just be hypocritical.
He’ll head back and take a walk around the park by himself, and that’ll be just fine.  All he wanted was some time out of the house, that doesn’t necessarily have to include Sam and Tucker.
And he is most certainly not going to ask them about where they were when he sees them next.  They’re entitled to their secrets.
If anyone can respect that, it’s him.

Patrols turn up quiet for the next couple of nights, so Danny has enough time to comfortably get all of his homework done and actually make a dent in his chores.  By the time Sunday night comes around, his responsibilities are taken care of, his back is mostly healed, and he’s actually going to sleep on time.
Then, of course, he’s woken back up by his ghost sense.
Jazz is definitely already asleep, and he doesn’t want to bother her, so instead he grabs the thermos he now keeps stuck inside the wall and changes into Phantom, then flies out through the same wall, already looking around for who’s there.
Strangely enough, he doesn’t see anyone.  But his ghost sense doesn’t go off without reason, so he starts flying around the area to see what’s there.  But still, nothing turns up, even after a thorough search.
Danny stops on a nearby rooftop and casts his gaze around.  “Where are you?” he mutters to the empty night.  He gets no response.
Finally, after doing a short patrol of the entire area the ghost could have reasonably been in to make his ghost sense go off, he flies back home.  It likely means he’ll have to deal with whatever it is tomorrow, but he can’t just start blasting at walls and hoping for a ghost to show up.  If it shows up again, his ghost sense will go off again.  For now he needs sleep.
Ugh.  Maybe Jazz is rubbing off on him.

Sam is already upset about something by the time Danny finds her and Tucker at her locker the next morning, and honestly at this point he’s not even surprised.
He takes a minute to take a deep breath and prepare himself for whatever Phantom-related annoyances he’s about to hear, and then he walks over towards Sam and Tucker.
But instead, as he approaches, Sam is saying to Tucker, “You need to start taking it more seriously,” with a gravity that makes it sound like they’re talking about something really important.
“Start taking what more seriously?” Danny asks.
Both of them whirl to face him, looking like deer caught in headlights.
“Uh, woah, okay,” Danny says, holding his hands up and taking a step back.  “Are you guys okay?  What is Tucker not taking seriously?”
“Uh,” Tucker says.
“Well, I found out this weekend how much all the property damage that has to be fixed from ghost fights is going to cost,” Sam says, crossing her arms with a glare at no one in particular.  “And it’s a lot.  And that money is going to have to come from somewhere, and I don’t want to see it directed away from important programs that people actually need.  And Tucker thinks I’m being ridiculous!”
“Uh,” Tucker says again.  He blinks a couple times, then turns hesitantly to Sam.  “Cause you kind of are?”
“Oh, and where do you think the money is going to come from, Tucker?” Sam snaps, turning to glare at him.
“I don’t know, but I’m sure the people in charge are thinking about it.”
“Yeah, and if no one makes sure they’re thinking about it in the right way, they’re going to start lining greedy businessmen's pockets before people even know what happened,” Sam says, throwing her hands up.  “And you don’t want to start a petition with me?”
“Uh, if you lay off Tucker a little bit, I’ll start a petition with you,” Danny offers, raising his hand slightly.
Sam, however, just turns her angry glare to him.  “Oh, and how is that going to help?  You sign a piece of paper and then stay stuck at home while I do all the leg work, because your parents grounded you and you still won’t bother to try and fix it?”
Danny blinks in shock, then narrows his eyes slightly.  “Hey.”
“Oh, whatever,” Sam snaps, turning and leaning with a loud bang back against the lockers.  “Clearly neither of you care.”
Danny looks over at Tucker, who’s just looking down at and fidgeting with his PDA, meaning he’s probably not going to say anything.
So instead, Danny sighs and turns to lean against the locker next to Sam.  “Sam, of course we care,” he says.  “I care.  You’re just
being really intense about this.  You have been for almost a week now.  Maybe you should take a deep breath and calm down a little.”
Sam turns such a gaze of fury on him that Danny actually takes a step back.
“Invis-o-bill is out there putting people’s lives in danger,” Sam says dangerously.  “And you want me to calm down.”
Danny takes another step back.  He swallows.  “Yeah.”
If looks could kill, Danny would be dead twice.
Sam pushes herself off the lockers and marches angrily away, making sure to shoulder-check Danny as she goes.  It doesn’t really hurt, but Danny rubs at it anyway, looking after Sam in concern.
He’s about to turn to Tucker to try and talk to him about what just happened, but to his surprise, when he turns and looks at the place Tucker was just a second ago, he’s gone.
Danny turns back and forth for a brief second to try and look for him, but he remains alone in the middle of the hallway.

He tells Jazz about his ghost sense going off last night when he finds her in the hallway, and she agrees to keep an eye out for it that day along with him.
Things are pretty quiet for most of the morning though, and there’s no kind of alert that there’s a ghost somewhere else in Amity Park for him to slip out and fight.  By the time he makes it to lunch he’s starting to wonder if maybe last night was some kind of strange fluke.
But it doesn’t take long for him to start almost wishing for a ghost attack, once he sits down.  Sam is already looking very firmly in any direction except at him, and Tucker once again seems very uncomfortable with the whole situation.  They all spend the time sitting there in silence, trying not to look at each other.
Honestly, it’s almost a relief when his ghost sense goes off halfway through lunch.
Danny quickly gives a mumbled excuse about going to the bathroom, then all but runs from the lunchroom.  By the time he made it outside last night, the ghost was already gone.  He’s not wasting any time if this is the same ghost.  Instead, he ducks down an empty hallway and transforms, then flies back in the direction of the lunchroom.
He stays intangible just in case, but once again, he doesn’t see anything.  Everyone in the lunchroom is just eating and chatting like they had been before.  He casts a gaze around anyway, trying to find anything unusual.

Where are Sam and Tucker?
Danny dives back through the wall, and drops his intangibility in case one of them sees him and calls out, but finds no sign of them.  And unlike the park, he has no reason to suspect he shouldn’t be able to find them this time.  This isn’t a weekend, they’re at school.  They aren’t allowed to leave.
But they aren’t in the hallway and they’re gone from the lunchroom, so where are they?
Before Danny can question it too much, however, he feels something soft hit him from behind, and has just enough time to process one of Skulker’s nets wrapping around him before he’s yanked up through the ceiling.
“Hello, ghost child,” comes Skulker’s very familiar voice, and Danny looks up to see him standing at the end of the net.
“Oh, great,” Danny says with an irritated sigh.  He focuses on the net long enough to blast it away from himself, and then turns to aim another shot at Skulker, who’s now flying to the other side of the roof.
“And what do you want?  Just to make me miss the end of lunch?” he asks, putting up a shield to absorb the blast Skulker shoots back.
“I’m here to teach you a lesson, ghost child,” Skulker snaps, sounding strangely irritated.  “You should know better than to try making deals with your enemies.”
Danny blinks.  “What are you talking about?”
“What, you mean to tell me you weren’t the one who brokered that ridiculous deal with Plasmius?”
Danny narrows his eyes.  “Plasmius?”  He hasn’t seen Vlad since the week he showed up to unleash that random green octopus ghost for seemingly no reason.  (Which he still doesn’t understand.  It’s not like Vlad to send other ghosts to do the fighting for him.  He likes to give Danny the injuries himself.)
Skulker narrows his eyes back at Danny, and both of them look at each other for a minute in confusion and suspicion.
“What deal?” Danny says finally, which seems to snap Skulker out of his thoughts.
He laughs.  “Don’t make me laugh, ghost child,” he says.  And before Danny can point out the contradiction there, Skulker raises his arm and fires a blast at Danny.
Danny’s raises another shield just in time, but doesn’t have as much time to brace himself, resulting in him getting knocked backwards off the edge of the roof.
He catches himself in midair and spins around to go for Skulker again.  In the time it takes him to do that, however, Skulker starts flying for him again, meaning he slams right into Danny’s chest and pushes him further back.
Danny shoves his palms into Skulker’s armor and fires two ectoblasts right into him, shooting him backwards through the air.  Unfortunately, that also means Skulker slams back into the school.  Danny goes for his thermos before anything else can happen, only to find it not there.
He’d left his backpack in the lunchroom.  Idiot.
Skulker flies right for him again, and Danny has just enough time to dive out of the way, around to the front of the school.  At this point, however, people have heard the fighting going on, meaning there’s people starting to spill out the doors and onto the front lawn of the school.
Not a great place to be during a ghost fight.  He needs to lead Skulker away from them.
Danny flies towards the back of the school again, fast enough that the students can’t follow.  Skulker follows right after him, which Danny expected.  He’s still the half-ghost prize, after all.  Plus it’s just generally pretty rude to change gears in the middle of fighting someone and go after random irrelevant civilians.
Danny intends to take them both further away from the school in general, but as he’s looking around and trying to evaluate where would be best, Skulker flies around to his front, then shoots a blast at Danny that pushes him flying back into the side of the school.
Danny pushes himself off the wall with a groan, only for Skulker to show up with a blaster at his throat a second later.  But just as Danny is about to try and shoot him away again, Skulker’s gaze flicks towards something else.
Danny doesn’t bother with wasting time wondering why, and instead uses the moment to shoot Skulker back away from him.
Skulker turns a glare back on Danny, and Danny aims a blast at him to try and push him further away from the school, but Skulker instead turns intangible and flies in an arc around him, back towards the school.  He drops his intangibility just as Danny turns around, and faces him with a glare.
“Tell Plasmius I don’t do deals,” he says.
Danny fires one more blast downwards at him, but before it can connect Skulker flies just high enough to avoid the blast and reveal that he was hovering in front of something.
Something which just so happens to be Tucker.
Tucker’s eyes widen just before the blast hits him in the chest, but Danny is the one who screams.  He barely even notices Skulker flying away, instead going straight for Tucker, who hits the wall of the school behind him, without the added crucial element of superpowers that make Danny a little more durable.
Danny reaches Tucker and pulls him into his arms, only for Tucker to slump over unconscious against his chest.
“Tucker?” Danny says weakly, shifting him around in his arms as he tries to check for where he's the worst injured.
The rise and fall of his chest means Tucker is breathing, thank fuck, but a couple seconds of looking reveals there’s a bleeding wound on the back of his head.
Danny thinks he remembers Jazz saying something before about how head wounds tend to look worse than they are.  He’s praying to whatever’s out there listening that she’s right.  Please let her be right—
“Get away from him!”
Danny startles and jerks upwards just in time to see Sam shoving herself in between him and Tucker, pushing him back with a harsh shove.  Danny lands on the ground, and Sam just manages to catch Tucker before his head hits the same thing.
Danny stands and reaches towards them both, only for Sam to spin to him.
“Get away!” she screams again, and despite her glaring but Danny can hear the shake in her voice.  “Get away, don’t touch him!”
“Wait, you don’t understand,” Danny says, even as he backs up.  “You don’t understand, he—”
“I said get away!” Sam screams again, and they’re both shaking badly enough that after a second, Danny just does.
He only flies to the other side of the school to change back, though, and then he’s running right back towards the two of them.  He doesn’t care how suspicious it might look.
“Sam!” he calls, only for Sam to turn just as withering a glare on him as she gave his ghost half.
“Go away, Danny,” Sam snaps, pushing her and Tucker backwards and away from Danny.
“Sam,” Danny says weakly, reaching for them both.
“I said go away,” Sam hisses.
“Sam I—”
Sam draws herself upright and glares just angrily enough at Danny to shut him up.
“That Invis-o-bill you don’t think is dangerous?” Sam says, clenching her hands into fists.  “He just blasted Tucker into a wall, Danny!”
Danny’s hands start shaking worse, and he shoves them into his pockets in a hope of making sure Sam can’t see them.  “Sam,” he says again, “I—”
“And you told me to calm down,” Sam snaps at him.  “This is what happens when I calm down, Danny!”
“Sam,” Danny says, trying to swallow past the lump in his throat.
“Because neither of you would take this seriously, and now Tucker’s hurt—”
“Sam,” Danny forces out, finally just deciding to ignore the tears welling in his eyes.  “I think we should get the nurse.”
Sam glares at him for another second, then hoists Tucker up into her arms as she stands, walking the opposite direction from Danny.
“Wait,” Danny says, stepping towards her and taking his hands out of his pockets even as theyïżœïżœre still shaking.  “Let me help—”
Sam turns a silent glare on him, and there’s no way she can mean it this way, but a voice still hisses in Danny’s head: You’ve done enough.
Danny stops walking, and lets Sam carry Tucker around the corner alone.

Jazz finds Danny sitting underneath a tree behind the school, his head buried in his knees.
For his part, Danny’s only alerted of her presence when she calls his name.  He doesn’t pull his head up to look at her.  He doesn’t want Jazz to see what a mess he is right now.  He hears her sit next to him, though, and hears her speak.
“I heard what happened.”
“Tucker?” Danny croaks without lifting his head.
“He’s gonna be fine,” Jazz says.  “He’s got a concussion, but he’s going to be okay.”
The tight ball in Danny’s chest loosens ever so slightly, and he gives a vague hum of acknowledgement and thanks.
“Danny,” Jazz says. “Are you—”
“Jazz,” Danny cuts her off before she can ask.  “I’m not telling Sam and Tucker that I’m Phantom.”
Jazz doesn’t say anything.
“Ever,” Danny clarifies.
“Danny,” Jazz says again, and he feels a hand on his shoulder.  “It’s not your fault—”
Danny pulls away.  “Stop.”
“Danny I mean it—”
“I mean it too, Jazz,” Danny snaps, finally lifting his head just enough to glare at her before he drops it onto his knees again.  “Stop.”
Jazz does, and she doesn’t try to put her hand on his shoulder again.  Instead, they both just sit there in silence, long past the time they’re supposed to go home.

A mouse and a lizard
Chapter 3: first day of school
3 person pov
About a month later Kim was released from the hospital and was going to start her first day of school
John:* hands Kim her lunch box* here sweetie I made your favorite have a good day!
Kim: thanks dad!
Kim starts walking to school but she is still terrified that those people will come to take her away again and kept looking around to make sure she won’t get hurt until she made it to school
Daisy: hi Kim! I see you are doing better!
Kim: hi Daisy I am doing much better!
Daisy: that’s good! Do you know where you are going?
Kim: yes I do
Daisy: good
A few hours later Kim is sitting on a bench outside school eating her lunch and Sally walk up to her
Sally: oh hi Kim I didn’t know you were coming to this school
Kim: oh this was the school closest to my house and my dad went here when he was a teenager and he said it’s a really good school
Sally: yea this is a great school! Except back in 1989 a bunch of people suddenly disappeared
Kim: what do you mean by that?
Sally:* sits down next to Kim and pulls out a book* here my mother and her friend wrote will explain everything
Kim: your mom was a writer? Was she famous?
Sally: yes and no she’s only a famous writer in this city, but not worldwide famous and her name is Angelina shockstin ïżŒ
Kim: oh I think I have heard of her
Sally: really?
Kim: yea was she the one that wrote “ my life as a Jewish android”?
Sally: yes!
Kim: oh cool! Which one is this?
Sally: “ the mystery of Sakura” it’s about the history of the school
Kim: is it good or bad history?
Sally: both here let’s read the back “this is a story of my high school days and the disappearance of a bunch of girls we don’t know what happened to them but we found out that they had a conversation with the same boy this is a story of the fear it caused everybody that happened with the span of 10 weeks and the worst part is the killer was never found”
Kim: is that why there is a noose, skeleton a shovel and a knife in the tree with initials carved in the tree? ïżŒ
Sally: yes my mother explained that the killer convinced like two of the girls commit $u!c!de
Kim: how?!
Sally: she convinced everybody to bully them
Kim: that sounds terrible
Sally: it was hopefully there is no crazy person here trying to kill us.
Kim: yea I probably stay away from all the guys
Sally: yea definitely
Kim: another weird question did have a boyfriend/girlfriend or do you have one right now?ïżŒ
Sally: no I don’t you?
Kim: I had a girlfriend in the lab
Sally: oh did she come along with you?
Kim:
.no she died
.
Sally: oh how did she die?
Kim: well one of the scientist injected her with flower seeds and if she ever fell in love the flowers will grow and knowing that I confessed to her and everything was well in there is some robot girl that made a drink for her that would slow the flowers down so we made it into about a year but she slowly started becoming week and sick I tried to stay with her but
..a month before I escaped she died I still feel like it’s my fault she’s gone
Sally:* puts her around kim* hay don’t think that I’m sure her soul is still in your heart and maybe you’ll find somebody who makes you just as happy as she did
Kim: yea hopefully
Sally: what was her name?
Kim: I don’t remember
Sally: ok where did you get that necklace?
Kim: oh my dad gave it to me for my fifth birthday it says “you are my sunshine” on the back
Sally: aww that’s cute
Kim: thanks
Sally: if you don’t mind sharing can you tell me more about what happened in the lab?
Kim: I won’t say too much because I really hate those memories but one time they hooked my brain up to some machine to see if the lizard blood made me any smarter or something and since I wouldn’t hold still I was tied to the chair and I still wouldn’t cooperate so that when they ripped my eye out well one guy didïżŒ
Sally: who?
Kim: some doctor named James
Sally: that must’ve hurt like hell what did they do with your eye
Kim: he threw it on the ground and stomped on it and said “if you don’t stop behaving I will do the same to your other eye” ïżŒïżŒ
Sally: ok I will stop those kind of questions, but I do want to know one last one when and why did they throw acid on you? ïżŒ
Kim:

.
Sally: i’m sorry I’ll go now
Kim: no no it’s just I don’t mind answering these questions because you sound generally curious and not trying to make fun of me it just brings back bad memories
Sally: well, you could skip the question if you want to ïżŒïżŒ
Kim: no I said I don’t mind answering so here is your answer. I believe I was about like 13 or 14 and the lizard blood I was ejected with had very tough skin so that’s when they tied me down to a table and threw acid all over me that’s how I got the whole, my face showing my teeth and the one near my rib cage and my leg ïżŒïżŒ
Sally: do you need to put medicine on your wounds?
Kim: no I have them sew my acid wounds together ïżŒ
Sally: may I see the rest of your face?
Kim: no you probably scream
Sally: ok if you ever feel comfortable with sharing your face
Kim: ok I will
At Kim’s house after school Kim goes into the bathroom and moves her hair from her face and removes her eyepatch and just stare at herself in the mirror
Kim: I knew that she would scream and run away if she saw me like this
John: Kim is something wrong? ïżŒ
Kim: kinda
John: what’s wrong dear? Bad first day?
Kim: no remember that girl Sally from the hospital?
John: yes I remember Sally why?
Kim: well I realize i like like her and earlier today, she asked if she could see the rest of my face and I wanted to become I knew she would scream if she saw me ïżŒ
John: hay don’t automatically think that
Kim: I’m trying not to
John: do you ever plan on showing her the rest of your face? ïżŒ
Kim: if we ever get serious then yeah I will
John: ok don’t rush things between you and sally
Kim: I know I won’t
Two years later the four girls are 18 and Kim finds out that dreamer and Marceline are not human beings and Kim’s feelings for Sally grow stronger and she decided to ask sally out
Kim: so I asked Sally out on a date what should I say?
Marceline: ask about her talents and just try to make sure the conversation is mostly about her
Kim: ok I will try

time for dex backstory
before the mutation, dex was what you would call a “weak kid” in terms of health. he often got sick and just in general had a weak immune system. as a result, he spent a lot more time at home, sometimes even going a couple of weeks being home-schooled at a time if his illness got really bad.
this danny really doesn’t have a lot of friends his age. after all, how do you make friends at school when you’re barely even AT school? he’s still close friends with his own sam and tucker, but his tendency to stay home does stunt the natural progression of their friendship a bit. don’t get me wrong, they’re still good friends but compared to the canon trio, they’re just not as close knit. in all honesty, dex finds it kind of a miracle that sam and tucker stuck around so much in the beginning to this point despite barely knowing him.
the trade off for not being close to anyone among his peers though was a really strong relationship with his family. out of all the dannys, dex has the closest relationship to his parents and jazz (who goes by “jasmine” in this universe). even if the worrying and concern for his health can be a bit suffocating, dex finds a lot more comfort with them than anyone else. he feels he’s able to trust them with anything.
from very early on, this danny takes a much bigger interest in jack and maddie’s work. when he’s not learning the core subjects in homeschooling, he reads up on robotics and engineering, he asks many questions about his parent’s work, hes even asked jasmine to teach him whatever advanced ap math subject she takes to help him better understand the mechanical calculations of the inventions. danny spends a lot of time at home so what better to entertain himself than with the family business. he also goes down to the lab often, even to the point of having his own “designated safety area” for him to sit in while the fenton’s work on more dangerous projects (guests sure do raise their eyebrows at seeing dex sit in the blast proof glass box though lol). basically, danny is very comfortable being in the lab and even tinkers/invents his own things from time to time with his parents.
he even helps jack and maddie build the ghost portal. none of the heavy lifting and handling of dangerous materials of course (much to dex’s dismay), but looking over a lot of the blueprints and putting together many smaller components for the full thing. this leads to the button for the portal being closer to the entrance (courtesy of dex’s revisions), rather than being halfway in. its right by the arch of the portal on the inside.
this means, when the portal doesn’t work and dex goes to check it on his own (he was involved in this project and felt the need to make it work), dex doesn’t even fully enter the thing to accidentally turn it on. what instead happens is that he just pokes his head in, hugging around the arch of the portal and hits the button like this:
Tumblr media
his arm takes the brunt of the electrocution, becoming so badly burned and damage that it just simply needs to be amputated, and his head takes a partial dip in the ectoplasmic/radioactive substance before pulling himself out.
danny’s scream alerts the rest of the fentons, who were right upstairs as this was occurring. many emergency medical procedures, trips to the hospital, and periods of recovery later, danny makes it out of the incident well and healed. albeit, missing an arm and getting his eyes dyed green (they test and confirm the presence of ecto-contamination in danny’s system but were unaware of the side effects until later) he wore a simple mechanical prosthetic at first created by his parents, but slowly they improve and upgrade the model to what dex currently has. after the accident, dex seems to not get sick nearly as often as before too (jack and maddie are looking into the possible healing properties of ectoplasm).
they also slowly discover that danny.......seems to react weirdly around the inventions in the lab. maddie and jack have upped restrictions and regulations about going in and out of the lab (dex being only allowed in while they were there and he’s in his Box TM, they only agreed to this arrangement because dex begged to participate in projects again) but they notice danny somehow has an influence on the weapons even within the confines of his safety area.
looking into the connection, they discover dex’s psychic link to ectoplasmic substances. the fentons go on a real journey with testing dex’s abilities and how his new powers work (jack goes on about how their son is like a little superhero) and start tweeking/making inventions specifically for danny to control and operate.
eventually, with more ghosts attacking amity and dex’s miraculous recovery in health and desire to join the family business, jack and maddie start to build the mech for danny. its specifically design to match match his link/abilities, based on danny’s own concepts and sketches, and built in safety features/protocols for very dangerous situation (they are still parents who worry after all). this mech becomes dex’s main mode of fighting.
soon, danny becomes a very public figure with his ghost hunting. he doesn’t really have a secret identity to hide like everyone else, so his activities is very open for the town to see. because of this, he doesn’t have the same “loser status” as canon danny (not that he had the title before the mutation either, given he was always sick and no one wants to beat down on a sickly kid). dex is also able to regularly attend school now and finally starts to make friends/get to know others his age.
this also includes further building his friendship with sam and tucker. illness no longer restricts their time and access for them to hang out and dex has an absolute blast with the newfound interaction. he’s certainly a bit over-excited with the new experiences but thats in no way a deterrent to anyone seeking to befriend him.
though, sam and tucker are not as involved with fighting ghosts like canon sam and tuck are. they mostly fight out of sheer proximity with dex, who will toss them the extra gun/weapon when ghosts show up. theyre quite good at it too but ghost hunting is still very much considered “a fenton thing” and left to them whenever possible.

chapter two
Tumblr media
last paragraph from last chapter for recap::
At work the next day, you tried your best to cover up the bruises and cuts. They still stung. Even with the pain killers. I guess he meant it when he said he was gonna make your life hell. Because this sure hurt like hell. You were hurting all over. So badly it felt painful to even walk or sit down. No one even seemed a little concerned. Peter had got in late. He couldn't even see the cuts because you covered them so well. You had gotten so good at covering them because this had happened so many times. You were ashamed of having this talent. You were never supposed to get this good at it. But he had noticed that you were limping a bit. “Oh my love.. Who did this
?” he whispers, so no one else would hear. “..” you stayed silent. You were so scared to say who did this. Besides, he doesn't even know you have a boyfriend. (if you would even call it that.) He looks you in the eyes and gives a soft smile. “Don't tell me you tripped or some bullshit story. Darling, please tell me who did this to your beautiful body.” You were terrified of him. You had known Mark for years.  It didn't start off like this though. He used to be so sweet and comforting to you. He had always made you think that its your fault that he was like this. And you did think that.
chapter three |
You didnt know what to do. You were unsure if you should tell him or not. Its such a scary feeling. I mean you both trusted each other. Its just.. There was a voice telling you not to. Youve always had a problem with overthinking shit. So you just decided to not tell him. “Listen, its fine if you dont want to tell me. Its just im really worried about you. Youve been showing up these past couple of days with your bruises getting worse and worse. You need see a doctor for these, bunny.” You almost bursted into tears right on spot. He was being so sweet and supportive to you. It made your heart flutter. Tears started to form in your eyes. You felt so loved. Meeting him was the best thing that has ever happened to you. He had seen your eyes and gave you a warm embrace. “Itll be okay. Ill take care of you.” he said, his voice breaking also. You really didnt give two fucks if people saw you too. They didn't matter. He supported you at your worst, and at your best. “Cmon.. come here.. You can come to my place for the night if you desire.” he smiles. He made you so happy. A day away from the asshole at your apartment made you so happy. Finally. When your shift at the lab ended you met up with peter. “C'mon..my house is just down the street.” You gave him a smile and nodded. Youve never actually been to his house in the years that you had known him. When you got to his house he mentioned that this is not his house it is his parents that had ‘died in a car crash’ You believed and stepped in. The house smelled of cinnamon. “Its beautiful peter” you say and he leads you to the kitchen and he makes you some dinner. He had made some steak. “Mmf peter.. This is delicious!” you say with your mouth full of the delicacy. “Thank you.. Moms recipe.” he exclaims. When your done he leads you to his room. His room was kind of messy, dusty also. It had looked like no one had been in here for years. Strange isnt it? You shrug it off and continue with him showing you the bed. “Ill sleep on the floor. You can have the bet hun.” he says softly. “no no i dont want you sleeping on the floor! We can share a bed.” you exclaim. He shrugs and says “alright sweetie, but only if you're comfortable with that. Okay?” You nodded. “I think I have some antibiotics and bandages in my bathroom. I'll be back.” he chuckled. In the meantime, you looked around his room. Nothing too interesting except this tool box under his bed. You were going to look in it but it requires a key. Damn. I guess everyone needs some privacy. Peter walks in and sets his box of bandages and antibiotics. “Okay i need you to answer honestly. Where does it hurt?” peter aked. “Uhm everywhere honestly.. But mostly on my chest.” you declared. He nodded in confirmation, “okay, i'm going to need you to lift your shirt up. Okay?” You nod and slowly lift your shirt up. You'd be lying if you said this didn't turn you on. Peter treating your wounds. He gazes up at you and mumbles, “how did this happen..” You try to look away from him, but you feel a sting on your chest. “Fuck- what are you doing ! “ You scream, but you look down at him and see he is trying his best not to make it be painful. “..oh i'm sorry baby did that hurt?” he questioned. I mean, of course it hurt!
You nod and he utters, “i'm so sorry darlin. Please let me know if this hurts.” You manage to let out a “mhm..” and he continues. It did sting and burn when he was treating your wounds, but he insisted that he take care of you. The wounds were very serious. When you took a shower yesterday, you tried to take the shards of glass from the beer bottle out of your skin. You had gotten most out but, there were still a few small tiny pieces in your skin. You winced at him taking the shards out. Sure hurt like hell. When he finished getting the chips of glass out of your flesh, you let out a relieved sigh. But he was not done yet. He still had to treat the rest of your wounds. When he finished with that, he grinned and said, “There, i'm very sorry if that hurt my love” he then gives you a kiss on the cheek.
He starts to apply the bandages to the areas where the cuts were. “Now.. please tell me who did this sweetheart..” You gulp. You were so scared to tell 001. He was just a co-worker
right? What if he makes a new rumor that the lab whore gets assaulted by her boyfriend everyday after work.. No, he would never. Peter isn't that type of guy..right? Fuck it, you wanna see that asshole burn in hell after the shit he does to you daily. “It's.. m-my boyfriend..” his eyes widened. He did  not expect that to exit your lips. Your boyfriend out of all people. He just thought it was one of the slutty whores at the lab. “Oh my love.. I'm so sorry this is happening.. You shouldnt be mistreated like this. Have you tried calling the police?” he says like he, himself, is about to start crying. “Yes.. I've tried everything. He just ends up assaulting me.” his eyes start to form tears. He gives you one of the best hugs ever. You both start sobbing. “Come on, let's get to sleep.” he whimpered.
When you wake up, you look over and Peter is still asleep. Today is your day off. You look up at the clock at his bedside, it is four in the morning. You yawn, your eyes blurry. You massage your eyes in distress. The pain has gotten better. You get up to go wash your face in the bathroom. You splash some water on your face and hear an ominous creeeeaak. The door opens slowly and reveals peter.
He groans and questions, “mmf..y/n.. What are you doing awake?” You had wondered the same thing about him. He usually arrives late at work a few hours late. Huh. “Sorry, did I wake you? My apologies peter. I was just waking myself up.” you chuckled. He has a BAD bed head. Like hair covering his eyes and stuck to his face bedhead. He grinned and mumbled, “yeah.. Haha..” You didnt realize at the time but his morning voice was so attractive to you. It was like heaven. Anyways, you both had a moment of awkwardness and sexual tension. You slept in a white tank top. Since that was the only thing you had under your lab uniform. He slept in white shorts and a black shirt. His house was very chiilly. You broke the silence with him him clearing his throat. “Do you want some breakfast?” he asked softly. Your stomach was practically roaring. “Pplease?” you giggle. He leads you to his kitchen. Which looked like it hadnt been dusted in CENTURIES. You are beginning to get more and more suspicious of him.. But you just shrug it off. “So, what would you like for breakfast? Toast? Bacon? Or eggs?” you think to yourself for a moment and declare, “eggs and bacon please” Yesterday was actually one of the best days of your life. A day without him. It was so peaceful. But you are terrified to see his reaction to you being gone for days. You wish you never had to leave. You loved being around peter. You felt so safe with him. “Your breakfast is almost done my love..” He kindly said. A few seconds later the door bell rang. “Do you want me to get the door while you finish up?”  you yell over the loud noise of  the skillet. It smelt heavenly. “YES” he shrieks, the grease popping on him. You laugh, “ITS NOT FUNNY!” he yells.
You walk to the door and say, “it is.”You open the door and see what looks like your boyfriend. “Mark! What the h-” you get cut off with a smack in the face. “I should be asking you THIS whore. Who else are you with? Selling your body again, FUCKING SLUT. God damn it.” Peter turns around and glimpses a man in the doorway. They make eye contact. “How the fuck did you know i was here.???” your voice is shaking. You are terrified. “Dont you remember ? Oh wait.. You were knocked out. I put a tracker in your bag.” he says, emotionless. Your heart is beating so fast you think it will beat out of your chest. You rush to the nearest bathroom.  “Where the fuck are yo-” he gets cut off with a punch the face. Peter wasnt scared. He wasnt scared of your abuser. He hated him. Meaanwhile, you were in the bathroom literally puking your guts out. Having a panic attack. You didnt think he could find you. How the hell diddnt you notice. This was all your fault you thought. Tears streaming down your face like a waterfall. Coughing. You hear a knock on the bathroom door. “Darling, are you okay? I took care of.. Him” You try to reach up to the door but one of your wounds had opened. You groan. “imfineimfine.. One- one of my wounds had opened.” you whimper. You dont know how but, the door unlocks. He opens the door and picks you up carefully. “Oh my goodness!! Sweetheart.. Are you okay?” he questions. You look up and ask, “i think so.. So did you actually- did you do something about him?” He looks down and says, “mhm” he then gives you a kiss, “now then, let's get you back in bed, i'm sure you are in a lot of pain my love.” You nodd and he takes you back to the bed you woke upu in. While you lay in bed, waiting for him to get some bandages, you still wonder how he managed to get the door open with no key. Weird, huh? You decide to ignore it. Maybe he actually had a key to the bathroom. “Im baaaack!!” he says in a cheery tone. He must be in a good mood today, you think. He plops on the bed and sighs, “okay.. Where is the wound that had opened my love?” You point to your side and whisper, “here.” He nods and fixes and cleans your wound. “there , all better.” he smiles. “Right?” You nod. He gets up and goes over and turns on some music. You chuckle. “Want me to tell you what happened to your .. ex boyfriend?” You shake your head up and down, signaling yes. “Okay let me paint the picture for you. When you had went to the bathroom, me and him got into a fight, then i basically called the cops, he is in jail now. No need to worry about him. When i had told them what he had done
they said they want your words of all he had done to you. Im so sorry darling if you didnt want me to tell them.” he kisses you on the forehead. You smile and whisper, “no baby, I needed you to tell them. You did the right thing.” He smirks and whispers in your ear, “i love you so much babydoll.” he begins to give you sloppy kisses on the neck. “Thats it, thats it
mm” you moan. He looks up at you, “ohoho, so you like this my love
?” he asks. You gulp. I mean of fucking course you do, the man that you have had sexual tension for days finally decides to make a move?? You nod. “Words baby. Words..” you groan..
“Yes.. i love this actually” you giggle. He smiles and continues giving you sloppy kisses and hickies. His knee in between your legs. You are sure he could feel your wetness. He moves down to your lower area. “I dont want to hurt you.. Tell me if it hurts sweetheart..” He pulls down your shorts to reveal your drenched panties. “Oh my, oh my. Look how wet my baby is..” He looks up at you for permission to continue and you nod. You were fine with him eating you out. You just weren't ready for penetration with your wounds. “I know how youve been looking at me.. I bet you have been dreaming of this.. Baby” he states. He then gently tugs at your panties. A single “mm” comes out of his lips. He then puts his tongue on your clit. IT felt like heaven. You had been imagining this exact situation while touching yourself in the bathroom stalls in the lab. “Mm peter” you moan. “Fuck yeah baby.. I love it when you moan my name. Its so hot” he whispers. His warm breath on your cunt send sends shivers up your spine. You moan as he flicks his tongue on your folds. You grab is beautiful long hair. He can tell youre close so he goes faster. “Oh baby
fuck im gonna cum.” you gasp. He looks in your eyes while he is eating you out. “Come on sweetheart- come on, cum in my mouth. I want to taste you.” With him saying that, it made you cum the hardest you ever had. “Mm that was so hot..good job..” he then gives you a kiss. Your breathing eases. “Calm down baby.. I got you, i got you.” he gives you another kiss. “Let me wash you off. I love you so, so, so much.”

Aaaaa this is a fic request, where kondraki is with an s/o where they are a normal civilian and is completely oblivious to whatever is going on, until she got curious and snooped around, found out about the foundation and confronted kondraki about it, now he has too make her forget and give her anesthetics and it might lead to some really good angst >:)
‘With All My Love, Kondraki.’
[Dr. Kondraki X F!Reader]
[Warnings: language, angst]
[AN: it's 4.1K words. lots of love and the pacing is weird]
When you first met Benjamin Kondraki, you had never been so confused on how a peach so sweet could be related to a lemon so sour.
“Miss Reader, Miss Reader!” The buzzling little boy at the dining room table began to prod. He jumps excitedly, almost spilling his orange juice as one of his mothers packs her bag up, getting ready for her long work day. She continues to move, currently looking for things she may need when her front door opens, revealing a woman dressed appropriately for the warm summer day.
“Hi Mrs. Wei,” you greet, kicking your shoes off at the door, and placing the keys back into your bag. You notice she’s searching - probably for her car keys.
The black haired woman looks up from her current task and beams. “Reader! I’m so glad you could make it. Thank you so much for coming on such short notice,” she says as she briefly waves at you. “Nia originally had the day off but something went wrong at the lab and she has to go in, and I have to be at the salon today-”
You smile and wave her off, reaching over on the sofa for her car keys. You cross the distance and hold the keys out to her. “Don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t miss spending time with this special little guy for the world,” you chuckle, looking over to the happy little boy as he scarfs up his breakfast. Looks like today was waffles.
Mrs. Wei takes her keys and heads over to her son, pressing her lips to the crown of his head. “You be good for Miss Reader, okay?” She reminds him with a small smile as he happily gazes up at her. “Again, thank you for coming on short notice.”
You wave her off with a small chuckle. “It’s nothing. Have a good day at work.”
Mrs. Wei opens the front door of her house, once again waving to her son before nodding at you. “Nia will text you when she’s coming home. You two have fun,” she says, the door closing after her with a soft click.
Shortly after that as you sit down at the table with Markl, you hear her car come to life and peel out of the driveway. Your attention is now on this special little boy. “So, are you ready for a fun day?” You inquire, pouring yourself a glass of orange juice.
Markl nods, his dark eyes shimmering in the light. “Super ready!” He exclaims with a wide smile.
You can’t help but giggle. “What do you wanna do today?” You hum. “We could go to the beach, or the mall-”
“I wanna go to the park,” he interjects in a way that only five year olds can. “There’s a boy I’m really good friends with and I want to see him again.” Markl begins to rattle off, excitedly telling you about all his adventures only pausing to finish up his food or drink some more orange juice. He’s beaming.
You listen to him with such a large smile, every now and then reminding him to finish. When he’s done, it’s barely 10 in the morning. Markl wanted to watch some TV and then get dressed and ready for the park. He’s a big boy, so you trusted him to get ready by himself without your help - and he’s developing a quick sense of style. Right now, tiaras and t-rexes are all the rage.
In the meantime, you check the weather. Looks like today is going to be a really nice day. “Hey, Markl?”
“Yeah?”
“Which park are we going to in order to see your friend?”
“The one with the really big rocketship,” he calls out.
You hum. Okay, that’s the one by the beach. “Sweetie, you want me to pack a beach bag? Planning on going in the water?”
A slight pause before you can hear the little boy go ‘uh-huh!’
You turn off the TV and begin to pack, quickly moving through some of the rooms for some beach things. Luckily, you already have some of your own beach things in your car. Markl finally comes down the stairs right when you finish packing and you see he’s got a dinosaur swim top on, some shorts, and his favorite flip flops paired with a plastic tiara he won on the last day of school. “Lookin’ good,” you compliment as you glance over the house, once again fishing around for your keys.
Markl beams and hops down the stairs to be at your side. “Time to go?”
“Time to go,” you answer, opening the front door.
Markl practically hops out of your car once you make it to the beach side park. You have to tell him to hold his horses and he pouts for a moment because apparently, his friend is waiting for him. You lean in the backseat and get out the beach bag. “Okay, okay, we can go now,” you say as you sling it over your shoulder. It’s warm, almost impossibly warm. Thank goodness you’re by the sea.
You watch as Markl speeds off towards the giant rocketship, kicking up sand as he does so. He’s calling out for another little boy - “Draven? Where are you?” He calls out.
You watch with curiosity as Markl runs about the playground, moving past the other kids. You tilt your head slightly and take a seat on the bench, watching as Markl runs around.
“There you are!” He finally cries out happily, running up and smacking into another boy similar in height. He’s got curly black hair, much like Markl, but much lighter skin. They instantly wrap arms around each other before running off to play on the giant rocketship.
Smiling, you pull out a book from your bag and begin to read, listening every now and then to the boys as they play. You’re glad Markl has a friend.
The warm summer day begins to tick by and around noon, you hear small steps padding up against the sand to come see you.
“Miss Reader,” Markl starts, peering over your book. “Can we go play in the water?” He asks, eyes akin to that of a puppy.
You bookmark your page and nod before pausing. “Oh, what about Draven? Does his mom say it’s okay?” You ask, not wanting to run off with some other person’s kid.
Markl and Draven share a look at each other before pulling at you. “Let’s go ask!”
You raise your brows and hurriedly get your things together, crossing the sandy playground to the other side where some man sits. He’s got dark black hair, slightly curled, and looks exhausted.
“Daddy, daddy!” Draven calls out, happily bounding up to the man you now recognize as his father. “Can I go play in the water?”
The man raises a brow, looking at his son and the boy he recognizes as his son’s friend. “She gonna be watching you?”
You bristle slightly. ‘She’? You press your lips into a tight line. “You do realize I have a name, right?” You say, resting your hands on your hips.
The man blinks, a huff escaping his lips. “Apologies.” It’s said in such a hollow tone. “I’m Benjamin Kondraki, most people call me by my last name.” He holds his hand out to you.
You narrow your eyes and center yourself. “Reader, Reader Last,” you reply, taking his hand. You put on a smile and then let him go. “I’ll watch Draven,” you say.”
“Don’t you wanna go in the water with them?”
You blink. “I guess?” It was an awfully hot day. Maybe he has a point.
“And you can’t do that while you’re holding all of these things, right?”
You nod.
Kondraki stands up, stretching his limbs before he ruffles his son’s hair, and then Markl’s who laughs loudly and joyously. “I’ll take a seat on the beach, watch your stuff.”
You spent the rest of the day swimming with the two boys, tossing them into the water and playing with them. Markl was happy you were able to play, and Draven was just pleased he was able to go in the water. Normally, Kondraki didn’t let him go in! At one point, Kondraki became the judge over a sandcastle contest between the three of you and Markl ended up winning!
“You did put in good effort,” he said, a sly grin on his lips as you flicked the water droplets off your hand at him. He laughed.
Draven and Markl hugged each other tight, trying hard to spend more time with each other when it’s time to go. Both you and Kondraki struggled to get the boys apart from each other. But, sleepiness from a long day affects even the strongest of bonds and the two were peeled away once the yawning commenced.
“I’m sure I’ll see you soon,” you say over your shoulder as Kondraki rests a tired Draven in his arms.
“Sure,” he hummed. “Have a nice evening.”
You warmly smile, almost displeased he’s not returning the gesture.
What an odd man.
Shortly after coming back to Markl’s place, Nia had texted she’d be home soon and right when you were cuddling with Markl on the couch to a fun movie (he’d insisted on watching Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron).
“You two look like you’ve had an eventful day,” she smiles, kicking off her shoes and getting ready to relax in her home. She brushes her fingers upwards and takes out the hair tie, letting her braids fall down her back.
“We did,” you say as Nia sits down on the couch next to her son, her gentle arms taking him into her arms. “Met Draven’s dad.”
“Konny?” Nia perks up. “He’s a good friend of mine.”
Your eyes widen in surprise. “He is? But he’s such a d-”
Nia laughs, her smile widening. “I know,” she giggles. She brushes her fingers through Markl’s hair. “He’s not a bag guy, promise.”
You roll your eyes and relax against the couch. “Sure.”
Nia only snickers in response.
The next time you see Kondraki is at Markl’s birthday party. And it’s safe to say that this time, you and Kondraki got along just fine. There were a few shifty glances thrown, but ultimately? Ultimately, the two of you sat at the table, had some cake, and poked fun at certain things. He made you laugh, and seeing him with Draven made you admittedly more friendly than you were expecting to be.
“Y’know, you’re not too bad,” you say, a small smile on your lips.
Kondraki chuckles under his breath as he hands you another glass of iced tea. “Should I be offended?” He jokes.
You lightly slap his shoulder and take the tea from him, sipping at it slowly. “Are you a dick to everyone you meet?”
Kondraki laughs this time, it bubbles up from his throat and exits like bubbles. His eyes crinkle slightly. “When am I not like that?” He grins.
“For work?” You hum, eyes shifting to Markl and Draven running around the backyard with other kids. You fail to notice how Kondraki freezes, a slight fear washing over his system before he clears his throat.
“Yeah, for work,” he says, attempting to keep up the light tone.
You sigh slightly in response, that same smile on your lips as you look back over to him. “I get it,” you say. “I can be a bit of a witch too.”
Kondraki playfully rolls his eyes. “Sure, like you have a mean bone in your body.” He takes a long sip at his drink.
“Could always change that if you leant me yours,” you absentmindedly say, not even realizing the implications until Kondraki practically chokes. A heat rises over your cheeks as Kondraki struggles to compose himself. “Oh my gods, I’m so sorry-”
“Don’t be!” He laughs, practically doubled over as your face heats up even more.
You pout and cross your arms over your chest, heart beating like a drum. You rake \your fingers across your face and take in a deep breath.
Kondraki grins wildly as he comes back up, brushing his fingers through his hair, his emerald colored eyes shining in the remaining sunlight. “So, what are you doing next Friday?”
You’ve been dating the man for three years now. A simple Friday date turned into another, and then another, and after that, it was breaking the news to Draven who was more than excited to have you in his life. Now? Now you’re about to make the biggest step in your relationship so far.
“And you’re sure you’re comfortable with this?” Kondraki asks as he rests his arm over your shoulders, looking at your cleared out apartment save for the plethora of brown boxes that litter the room. It looks so empty, and the echoes of both your voices is the clearest reminder. “Because like, I don’t want to force you into-”
You turn your head to the side and press your lips warmly to the corner of Kondraki’s mouth, making him melt into the simple touch. “We’re gonna be just fine,” you begin. “I am going to be just fine. You’ve been asking me this question ever since you first proposed that I move in with you,” you tease as Kondraki shifts, his hands resting warmly on your waist. Your fingers reach up to thread through his dark locks, eyes getting lost in his. “I hate being apart from you,” you murmur into his chest.
Kondraki hums warmly, his lips pressing to the crown of your head as he swats the two of you. “I know, I know,” he murmurs. “I just don’t want you to be overwhelmed or like I’m forcing you, y’know?” He attempts to explain as he averts his gaze for a moment.
You furrow your brows and flash him a knowing smile. “You don’t need to worry about me like you did-” her “it’s nothing. I’m a big girl, I can handle it,” you giggle, once again tilting your head upwards to press your lips to Kondraki’s.
He chuckles deeply, thankful you didn’t mention her name and squeezes you against him. He revels in the feeling of your hearts beating in sync before gently and reluctantly peeling away from you. “C’mon, last of these boxes?”
You grin. “Last of these boxes.”
“Is that the last of it?” You huff, dropping the box onto the living room floor.
Kondraki wipes back the hair that’s fallen over his brow and nods. “Yeah, I think we’re in the clear.” He stretches his arms a bit, then his back, and takes in a few deep breaths. “Who knew such a small apartment could hold so much stuff.”
You chuckle heartily, “I know, right?” You check your watch. “Oh! Your turn to pick up Draven,” you say as Kondraki glances to his own watch, brows shooting up in surprise.
“Shit, you’re right,” he says as he pulls open the front door again. “Be back in a bit, love you,” he says as he rushes out the door.
“Love you too,” you call back, watching as a sly smile spreads onto Kondraki’s lips, listening to the car start off in the distance. You hum as you get to work, already familiar with the house as you begin to move things around.
It’s honestly relatively mindless work considering a good portion of your things have already been moved to the house in preparation for this day. You’re about halfway through getting your clothes into the drawers Kondraki cleared out for you when you hear a ping. Curiosity gets the better of you and you stand up, looking for the pings. Multiple of them. Sounds like an instant messenger go off, but you’ve never heard that type of notification sound before.
You begin to search the room, crouching down and playing an odd sort of “marco polo” with the thing until you check the closet. There, hidden behind piles of out of commission sweaters is a laptop. Weird, how have you never noticed that before, especially with all the times you’ve spent in this specific room? You shake the thought off and begin to move the sweaters aside and grasp for the laptop. It looks new, like, really, really new. There’s no company mark on it either. Silver chrome, in good condition, you raise a brow.
‘Should I really be doing this?’ You ask yourself as you debate on prying open the laptop or not. You bite your lip and sigh before deciding that yes, you’re going to be nosy even if your boyfriend might not appreciate it. You’ve never gone through his things without his permission prior to, and this was just to stop the notifications that kept incessantly going on. You pry open the laptop, pupils constricting slightly with how bright the screen is.
Of course, it’s locked.
Curiously, the little chat bubble is still open, and you’re able to read the correspondence. You read over the names, there’s three. Gears, Bright, and Clef. Must be coworkers? They seem a tad worried.
Gears: You cannot keep spamming him in hopes it will work.
Clef: the hell I can’t?? He needs to get his ass over here
Bright: I’ve tried call him and it’s not working
Bright: which is weird because when was the last time you saw him off his phone
Gears: Dr. Kondraki, you are needed almost immediately.
Dr? You raise a brow and scroll upwards in the chat, hoping to get some type of answer. And it keeps going, hundreds of messages about work and things you’re just barely piecing together. Luckily, there’s a little button that allows you to go all the way to the top - or at least how far the logs go.
What is all of this? Images are sometimes shown about files or strange creatures. How is this even allowed out? Your mind begins to spin.
While you scroll through the chat, you look up things through your phone, whispers of things called ‘SCPs’ and containment procedures, and of course, you find next to nothing. Is this just some elaborate Dungeons and Dragons campaign? Your head is spinning further and further as you go down the rabbit hole.
Apparently, Gears, Bright and Clef need Kondraki for something in regards to SCP 239, and it may or may not break ethics code. The things they’re planning on doing
You’re not sure what to make of it. You’re so immensely confused, head practically tearing apart at the seams when the front door opens and you hear Kondraki step back inside, a long sigh on his lips.
“Reader? You in?” He calls out. “Sorry for coming back so late, Draven’s mom, she uh,” he chuckles uncomfortably under his breath, “Draven’s not gonna be with us this weekend.”
You panic and slam the laptop shut, struggling to get the room back in order as Kondraki makes his way to the bedroom.
“Baby, what are you doing?” He asks, brow raised as he leans in the bedroom doorway, arms slightly crossed.
“I was just putting away my clothes!” You rush out, smiling at him.
“Sure,” he says with a small chuckle. His eyes scan over you before he realizes you’re sitting in front of the closet. His heart begins to sink. “Reader
”
“Konny-”
“How much did you see?”
You bite your lip. “I didn’t see anything,” you say. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Kondraki can practically feel the lie radiating off of you. “What did you see?” He asks again.
You feel shivers running up and down your spine, your heart is constricting. “...What is SCP 239?”
A long sigh leaves Kondraki’s lips, his eyes slowly moving from you to his wardrobe. The top drawer, the one you can’t reach, the one he’s told you is nothing more than a coin holder
It has the amnestics. He blinks a few times, heavily walking over to the bed and plopping down on it. “C’mere, I’ll explain it to you,” he says, patting the space beside him.
You hesitantly stand, hand resting in his.
Kondraki rests his arm around you, pulling you into his side as he begins to weave to you the tale of everything you should have never known. Like the first humans in the garden, you were tempted by the snake and ate of the fruit that should have not been eaten. Knowledge is your damnation.
It’s exhausting, entirely exhausting. The weight of all this knowledge - you can’t help but lay back on the bed and listen to Kondraki’s heart, your eyes feeling heavier and heavier.
“Are you tired?” He asks softly, his nose buried into your hair.
You nod ever so slightly.
“Why don’t you get some sleep?”
You feel tears welling in your eyes as Kondraki’s grip around you tightens. “Are you going to be here when I wake up?”
He hums deeply, lips peppering kisses to the crown of your head. “Of course I will.”
“You promise?”
A slightly prick snaps at the base of your skull.
“Yeah baby, I promise.”
You wake up the next morning with tired eyes and a heavy body. You yawn, stretch, and crack your back, eyes narrowing at the sound. Crisp. With another small yawn, you sit up and look out your window, pleased to see that there’s little to no traffic outside. You wonder if you’ll see Sophie soon. Her fathers would be pleased to have the day off, after all. You reach over for your phone.
10 AM on a Saturday? You briefly panic, wondering if you’re missed any baby sitting appointment with your favorite gal when you see a text from Dylan.
Philip: hey sugar cube, Dylan’s mother cancelled the visit for this weekend. Won’t be needing to watch Sophie this weekend. Have a good one
Came in at 7 AM. You let out a breathy sigh before falling back onto your bed. Thank goodness, you would’ve felt awful for leaving them hanging! You sit back up again, thankful you can spend a Saturday to yourself.
Has work really been that hard? Blank spaces begin to make themselves known in the back of your head, a mosaic that you can’t quite place together, but it’s not blatant. Why would it matter?
You brush off the strange, bubbling thoughts before swinging your legs over the bed, sleepily heading to your kitchen. Same tiny apartment, same shitty walls. You run your fingers over your scalp before finally entering your kitchen. Why does it feel so
strange? You blink the feeling back.
There, on the countertop, is a cup of your favorite breakfast drink. It’s resting on top of a slip of paper in a handwriting that feels so familiar, yet hazy.
You try to bite back the horror that someone was in your apartment when you were asleep but shakily reach out to the note anyways, not realizing that your eyes are beginning to water as a response.
‘Nice to see you’re up, Reader. Always were a late riser. Look, I’m not supposed to be writing this to you, not after what happened, but I know you’re going to be confused to hell and back. Our use of ‘medicine’ can only go so far, and you’re bound to go spotty now, and a few months from now. You’re going to be confused, and you’re going to feel things that you aren’t supposed to because at one point, you really did feel them. When that happens, I need you to call this number - XXX-XXX-XXXX.
You’re really confused now, huh? Wouldn’t expect anything less, you never should’ve found out about this in the first place.
I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry. For failing to protect you, for taking away so much and not even being allowed to tell you what it is I’ve taken away. Perhaps if that day had gone differently, if I didn’t spend that time talking to her, I would’ve made it back in time to stop you.
You deserve better than this, truly. I wish I could have been that for you, and I’m so, so sorry that it had to come to this. Our protocol is strict, and I couldn’t bear to put you through what I’ve-... Some things are better left unwritten, but just know that it was better this than putting you through what we’d call hell on earth.
I’ve never broken a promise to you, not in the four wonderful years I’ve known you and the three I’ve loved you. I’ve managed to keep them all, but I fear this is the first I will break.
Call the number when things get weird, maybe we'll meet again.
With all my love, Kondraki.’

Chapter 4: Moved On, Too
Tumblr media
“Okay, but just so we’re clear on the finer details,” Klaus started as he and Five exited the latter’s room, gaining the attention of (Y/N), who was in her own bedroom. “I just gotta go into this place and pretend to be your dear old dad, correct?”
“Yeah. Something like that.” Five answered as (Y/N) joined them in the hallway.
“What’s our cover story?” Klaus questioned, looking between the two teenagers. Five furrowed his brows and shook his head a little in confusion.
“What? What are you talking about?”
“I mean, was I really young when I had you? Like, sixteen? Like, young and
,” Klaus dramatically placed his hands over his chest. “terribly misguided?”
“Sure.”
“Your mother, that slut. Whoever she was. We met at
” He trailed off in thought. (Y/N) thought to humor them a little.
“The disco?”
“The disco! That’s, good, (Y/N)! Okay? Remember that,” He excitedly agreed, Five muttering a ‘you’re unbelievable’ to the girl as Klaus continued on with his story. “Oh, my god, the sex was amaaaazing.”
“What a disturbing glimpse into that thing you call a brain.” Five began walking away. (Y/N) followed him as Klaus stayed back in thought.
“Wait, what about (Y/N)?” He asked, the two turning back to him. “Who is she gonna be?”
“She’s my friend.” Five plainly answered, Klaus gasping.
“Or girlfriend.”
“No.”
“Oh, you two don’t have to kiss! We gotta sell it and you two have way too much chemistry to be just friends.” He pointed between the two, (Y/N) and Five rolling their eyes in irritation. She’d be lying if she said she disagreed, and it wouldn’t have bothered her to pretend to be Five’s girlfriend, but she didn’t want to make him uncomfortable. Especially not now.
Huffing, Five looked to his brother again. “If I say yes, will you shut up and come on?”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Meritech Prosthetics, the three Hargreeves were sat in front of the executive’s desk. Well, (Y/N) and Klaus were sitting, Five was standing in between them, his jaw severely clenched as he listened to the man speak, “Like I said to your son and his girlfriend earlier, any information about the prosthetics we build is strictly confidential. Without the client’s consent, I simply can’t help you.”
“Well, we can’t get consent if you don’t give us a name.” Five grit his teeth as he leaned forward.
“Well, that’s not my problem. Sorry. Now, there’s really nothing more I can do, so-”
“And what about my consent?” Klaus suddenly spoke up, the three turning to him with furrowed brows.
“Excuse me?” The executive questioned.
“Who gave you permission
 to lay your hands
on my son?” He took a shaky breath and pointed at Five. Both the executive and the boy let out a ‘what?’. “You heard me.”
“I didn’t touch your son.”
“Oh, really?” Klaus stood up from his chair, and (Y/N) knew what he was going to do next was not going to be good. “Well, then how did he get that swollen lip, then?”
“He doesn’t have a swollen-” The man was cut off when Klaus struck Five in the mouth. The boy grunted on impact and (Y/N) quickly stood, in total shock. Did Klaus really just hit his brother across the face? The Seance turned to the man and leaned forward against the desk.
“I want it. Name, please. Now.”
“You’re crazy.” The executive pointed up at him, receiving a chuckle in response. (Y/N) went to Five’s side and silently checked his lip. It wasn’t bleeding too bad, but he definitely had a mark from it. He gently placed a hand on her wrist to let her know that he was fine.
“You got no idea,” Klaus then picked up a snowglobe that was sitting on the desk and smiled at it. “‘Peace on Earth’. That’s so sweet.” He remarked before smashing his head through it. Everyone jumped as glass shattered and fell from his bleeding head, a piece getting stuck in a strand of his hair. “God, that hurt!” He groaned.
The man quickly picked up the phone. “I’m calling secur- What are you doing?!” He exclaimed as Klaus snatched the phone from him and held it up to his ear, a gasp leaving his lips.
“There’s been an assault
in Mr Big’s office, and we need security, now. Schnell!” As he hung up the phone, the man could only stare up at him in fear. Klaus sighed and seemingly shook off the pain in his head. “Now, here’s what’s gonna happen, Grant.”
“It’s
 Lance-”
“In about sixty seconds, two security guards are gonna burst through that door, and they’re gonna see a whole lot of blood, and they’re gonna wonder ‘what the hell happened?’,” (Y/N) glanced over at Five who, despite his bleeding lip, was smirking at Lance. “And we’re gonna tell them that you
beat the shit out of us,” And just when they thought he was done, he quickly grabbed (Y/N) by her wrist and yanked her to his side. “And that you inappropriately touched my son’s girlfriend.”
“What?!” Lance and (Y/N) exclaimed. Klaus gently pushed her behind him and patted her head.
“It’s alright, sweetie, you can say it
” He gently spoke. It was silent for a minute and Lance was frantically glancing between her and Klaus. Eventually, she cleared her throat.
“I-I told him to stop.”
“Oh
You’re gonna do great in prison, Grant. Trust me, I’ve been there. Little piece of chicken like you. Oh, my god, you’re gonna get passed around like a
,” Klaus circled his hips. “You’re just- You’re gonna do great. That’s all I’m saying.”
“Jesus, you are a real sick bastard.” Lance shakily spoke as he looked around at the three. Klaus simply nodded at him.
“Thank you.” He whispered, spitting a glass shard out of his mouth.
It was safe to say that Lance was convinced to give them the information they needed. He led them to a desk and started going through a drawer, occasionally glancing up at Klaus, who was sitting on the desk and sweetly smiling at him. (Y/N) was sitting on the desk on the other side as Five simply sat in a chair in front of him. Finding the folder he needed, Lance started looking through it. “Oh, that’s strange.”
“What?” Five frowned.
“Uh, the eye. It hasn’t been purchased by a client yet.” The executive explained as Klaus hopped off the desk and got in his personal space.
“What? What do you mean?”
“Well, uh, our logs say that the eye with that serial number
,” He trailed off and was clearly uncomfortable by Klaus stalking behind him. Lance frowned as he scanned the information. “This can’t be right. It hasn’t even been manufactured yet. Where did you get that eye?”
Five sighed and locked eyes with (Y/N), whose were staring back in concern.
As the three walked out of the lab, Five and Klaus started to get into an argument about why the eye was important, but (Y/N) couldn’t have been bothered to listen at the moment. She was wondering how Michael and Jada were doing. Have they eaten yet? Of course, they have. Mom’s taking good care of them. Well, what about Michael? Is he getting homework done? I really hope he isn’t slacking off...
She stopped when she noticed Klaus and Five weren’t walking with her anymore. She turned to see them on the stairs in front of the lab.
“Hey, you know, I’ve just realized why you’re so uptight,” Klaus gestured towards his crotch. “You must be horny as hell!” He laughed. (Y/N) contemplated whether or not she really wanted to listen to this, but joined them anyway. “All those years by yourself. It’s gotta screw with your head, being alone.”
“Well
,” Five started quietly. “I wasn’t alone.” This caught both their attention. Klaus raised a brow.
“Oh? Pray tell.”
“Her name was Delores,” He told after a second of silence. “We were together for over thirty years.”
“Whatever happened to the clone I sent after you?” (Y/N) questioned. “Did it get left behind before you jumped? I told it to look after you.”
“Must’ve left it in 2002
It was just me and Delores throughout the apocalypse.”
Delores. That name again
sounded so familiar. (Y/N) was honestly very happy for Five. Happy that he wasn’t alone, happy that he’d moved on from whatever they had as kids. She’d done it, after all. So, she couldn’t have asked him to not do the same. Though, she couldn’t help the pit that formed in her stomach at the thought of it. She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Klaus yelling about his money. Only then did she notice that Five had left in a cab. (Y/N) rolled her eyes and took her wallet out of her jacket pocket, handing a twenty to her brother.
“Buy yourself something pretty.”
“You are a saint, sister dear.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Returning to the Academy, (Y/N) found Allison in one of the upstairs rooms, sitting on the windowsill and smoking a cigarette. She tilted her head with a smile before silently walking up to her. “Hey, Ally.”
“Oh, shit,” Allison jumped and turned to her sister. “Jesus, (Y/N), you can’t do that.”
“May I?” She held her hand out for the cig, Allison raising a brow before handing it over. She watched her sister take a long drag as she sat beside her on the windowsill. (Y/N) raised a brow at her. “What?” She exhaled the smoke.
“Nothing
 It’s just that
I thought you were trying to quit.”
“Yeah, Anthony would’ve wanted me to
but I really need it right now,” She heavily sighed before staring up at the night sky. “I miss my babies
”
“That makes two of us,” Allison shook her head and took back the cigarette once it was handed back to her. “God, what I would give to know how she’s doing
”
“Why don’t you call?”
“Because Patrick is being a grade A asshole
He wouldn’t let me speak to her.”
“What an ass,” (Y/N) shook her head. “If Anthony and I had ever split up, I would’ve never kept the kids from him
What’d you ever seen in him?”
“I don’t know
,” Allison leaned her head back, eyes sliding to her sister. “Speaking of rocky relationships
What’s going on with you and Five?” Her question made (Y/N) quickly sit up. “Oh, come on, you two were smitten when we were kids! Everyone knew it.”
(Y/N) shook her head and plucked the white stick out of Allison’s hand. “We’re not starting with this, Ally. Nothing is going on. We’ve both moved on from that shit.”
“That shit? That ‘shit’ was love and it’s still there. Neither of you truly moved on.”
“Well, Five definitely did. Told me about a woman he was with for years. Delores
”
“Oh, Delores
You think she’s cute?” Allison teased, receiving a shove. She laughed and shoved (Y/N) back. “I’m being serious!”
“You know she is, Five wouldn’t go with some hag, even if she was the last woman on Earth
Probably a babe, even at fifty-eight
”
“You sound
so jealous right now.” There was a long silence between the two, Allison waiting patiently for her sister to respond, but she laughed at what she said next,
“Piss off, Allison.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wind howled as Five spun his body around, still taking in what was left around him. Right by his side was (Y/N)’s clone, seemingly observing the current state he was in. Its eyes moved all around his face, then to his current line of vision. A single hand stuck out of the debris not too far away from him, holding what looked to be a bloody eyeball. Quickly moving forward, Five bent down and pried it out of the dead hand and wiped off the blood before looking to who the hand belonged to. His stomach dropped when he got his answer.
Luther -- or who he assumed was Luther, older and dead, crushed under rubble. Moving around the area, he found Allison, Diego and Klaus in the same state. All older, all buried under remains, and all dead. He had been staring at Klaus’s lifeless body when he heard rustling from a little ways away. Turning in the direction, he saw the clone moving some bricks around. Five made his way over to it, and what he saw made him collapse to his knees immediately.
There was (Y/N). His (Y/N). Bleeding from her mouth due to the rubble that was once crushing her, now moved away by her own clone. She was the same age as their siblings, the light from her (e/c) eyes slowly draining as her fingers slightly twitched. Right as Five went to hold her hand, her body gave one last twitch before going completely still, her eyes devoid of any light they’ve ever had.

Headcanons for being Tony Stark’s stepkid
Tony Stark x Potts!child!reader
warnings: alcohol mention
a/n: i rushed these so bad i just wanted to post dhhshsnsna
prompt: y/n is pepper’s kiddo!
Tumblr media
it was just you and your mom for a long time
pepper and y/n potts
she couldn’t keep up with you sometimes, too busy dealing with the manchild that was mister anthony edward stark
speaking of—
“uh, who’s this?” -tony, pointing at you
“mr. stark, i am so sorry, the school closed because some kid set fire to the science lab and i didn’t have time to find a sitter—”
“no, it’s fine, no need to apologize. hey, kid, you wanna sit in the boss’s chair? i’ll let you run the company for the day!” *cue you nodding* “sweet, would you mind that, ms. potts?”
“oh? no, not at all” *mouthing* “thank you”
“so, uh, what’s your name? no, don’t tell me: ketchup.”
*giggling* “y/n”
“no way! that was my second guess!”
tony wasn’t used to being around kids
he had no idea that he was actually kind of good around them
despite a few minor hiccups
“you sit in my chair and im gonna spin you around, sound like fun?”
he spun you around WAY too fast and you were diiiiizzy, also you fell off the chair
“don’t tell your mom that we did that. she may be my assistant, but she scares the shit out of me. also, don’t say ‘shit’”
dude he just thought you were a cool kid!!!
“hey, you know, ms. potts, you dont really need to hire a babysitter anymore. y/n’s doing just fine hanging out here”
“how am i not surprised you befriended an actual child?”
she still took him up on his offer, you seemed pretty happy
when your mom worked late, you passed out in tonys office
tony and you had your own little secrets (like falling off the spinning chair), tony showed you around stark tower, and you practically lived there
“i got you a happy meal from mcdonalds!” -tony every day after your school
in all honesty, you weren’t the “popular” kid at school...not even close
but tony made up for it
“y/n! i found this old racecar toy in a box of old stuff, you wanna hold onto it for me?”
you kind of grew up in stark tower tbh? it was pretty cool
and as you grew up, you started to notice more
“mr. tony, do you have a crush on my mom?”
“do i what? no, no, i do—who the hell am i kidding? you caught me”
“called it!”
after that you did everything to try and get them together
when your mom was talking to tony, you would stand behind her and wiggle your eyebrows and just taunt tony endlessly
no! tony cannot remember your mom’s birthday for the life of him! you are his calendar now
“dude, why dont you just ask JARVIS to remind you?”
“i may be a genius, but that doesn’t mean i have common sense”
“wise words, sir” -JARVIS
when tony disappeared for 3 months you were so sad???? like you were not okay at all
no
and when he came back, he literally exited the plane saying “WHERE’S ‘T-POTT??’”
(your wonderful nickname. ‘t’ for ‘tony jr.’ and ‘pott’ for ‘potts’)
“my mom missed you”
“oh, i bet she did”
“you turned my child into you, tony. i will never forgive you for this”
“well, at least y/n was here to fill in for me, huh?”
tony wanted to show you the arc reactor but he was actually afraid of scarring you lmfaoooo
but he did let you in on the iron man secret (he knew you wouldn’t snitch)
and just to make sure:
“if you dont tell anyone, i’ll buy you a car when you turn 16”
“man, that’s like, forever away”
“good, maybe you’ll forget by then”
ur mom kinda maybe sorta found out abt iron man :/ she told you that tony was a bad influence
“mom! no, tony’s cool! he’s like a superhero”
“no, sweetie, he’s a rich guy with issues. we’re leaving”
that didn’t last long
not long at all
and soon they FINALLY got together
“jeez, i thought you two would never stop pining after each other”
“couldnt have done it without my wingman” -tony *fistbump*
“as thanks can i have my own iron man suit?”
“yes.” *pepper glaring at him* “no.”
sooner or later your mom and you moved into tony’s house and you got a really big room!!!!
it was completely decked out
king sized bed, flatscreen tv, mini-fridge, microwave, computer, your own bathroom with a smaller tv, a poster of tony??? (you vandalized it and put it in his workshop), and more!!!
okay you were spoiled
“do you like it here? are you sure i made the right choice?” -pepper
“are you kidding, mom? this is awesome! plus, you’re happy, i’m happy, tony’s happy, i think JARVIS is even happy!”
“i am, mx. potts. simply ecstatic” -JARVIS
pepper was really happy!! it was a pretty cool family
you started giving your school tony’s number if you ever got in trouble, you knew he’d cover for you
“mr. potts, is it?”
“sure”
“your child, y/n, punched another student in the face today. we’re very disappointed in their behavior”
“why’d they punch the kid?”
“well, the other student punched y/n first”
“HAH! thank you for wasting my time. send y/n back to class and call me back if something important comes up”
he literally gave you a high five when you got home
“i gave him a black eye!”
“i couldn’t be more proud. i mean, i dont condone violence, but self defense is a whole other story”
a little help in the workshop, tony asks you to hold the flashlight
“why don’t you get one of your robots to hold this for you?”
“are you kidding me, you’re complaining? we’re having stepdad/stepkid bonding time! and dum-e can’t do anything right, i dont trust him”
youve had a few theme park trips as a family ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
also tony has 100% told you to wait in the car and then left you alone for 2+ hours
“i’m not like a regular dad, im a step-dad. want some beer? you can have a little sip. i’d rather you do it in the house”
your mother actually does love how he actually cares about you!
“y/n is 12% my responsibility” -tony
“tony, you are impossible” -pepper
no avengering for you! pepper said no!!!!!!
disappointed but not surprised
iron man 3: y/n potts is put through the wringer
Text Message to Mr. Tony: bro you better come get your girl, me and happy are watching this other guy flirting with her. he’s showing her pics of his ‘big brain’
Mr. Tony: HE WHAT
Text Message to Mr. Tony: Tony he looks creepy i don’t want him to be my new stepdad do something!!!
anyways ur house kinda blew up and ur mom and you kinda got kidnapped and u were right abt that guy being creepy and thankfully no experiments were done on you but like your mom kinda almost died and her and tony were fine!!! all good in the end
you met mr. col. james rhodes that day
“aw, you’re the kid ive heard so much about” -rhodey
“you mean the coolest kid in the world?check.”
“you cant tell me you aren’t tony’s biological child, good god”
you got to meet the avengers later on too! (you’d already met natasha tho, only briefly)
“i know it can be a little overwhelming, right? meeting all these heros, legends even—” -rhodey
“oh, my god, is that thor? thor!!” -you, leaving rhodey in the dust
literally why does pepper trust you around tony something always goes wrong there were literally robots attacking, you were only at avengers tower bc your mom was busy with the company and she thought you’d be safe with the avengers. the AVENGERS.
“please dont tell your mom that i created a bad robot that tried to kill us. the robot will be the least of our problems” -tony
he made happy pick you up and you had to miss out on FUN and it sucked a lot
“it’s okay, y/n! i’m fun, too!” -happy
then your mom and tony took a break and your life got mega-boring for a while, but they weren’t separated for that long. you try not to think about it. it was brutal
Mr. Tony: Does she miss me?
New Message to Mr. Tony: I think so. Either that or she’s crying and drinking wine in the dark for no reason.
Mr. Tony: Damn it, now I feel bad. I miss her a lot. Oh, also, the Avengers say ‘hi,’ I’m in Germany with some bad news, I’ll explain later if you don’t see it on TV first, and I found you the perfect friend! His name is Peter and I think you’d like the school he goes to, it’s in Midtown. Smart kid school.
New Message to Mr. Tony: I’ll look into it, thanks. Also, I don’t like how those all connect. Please update me asap
watching the news to see several avengers arrested, cap on the run, and more!
“maybe it was good i didn’t fall in with the avengers”
tony and pepper finally got back together and you actually transferred to midtown high! peter and his friend group accepted you quickly, it was great. you and flash unfortunately had the most in common
you’d literally text happy right next to peter and he’d immediately reply to you. it hurt peter’s feelings
Momma: Sweetie! I’m working in the office late, leftovers are in the fridge, hope you have a wonderful day at school! 💕
👉👈the vulture tried to kill you for being tony’s stepkid, tony made peter promise to protect you
“y/n, you gotta stay out of harm’s way. mr. stark gave me an actual mission and it’s terrifying, i have to make sure you stay safe”
legit why the fuck was this old man tryna kill you bro grow up
anyyyywayssss your mom and tony got engaged!!
“wow, i thought the day would never come!!” -you
ppl told you tony isnt your stepdad bc ur mom and him werent married but who tf asked
why is the earth always in fucking danger
you and peter were just vibing on the field trip bus and all the sudden: space donut
“go! i’ll cover for you...FRIDAY, call tony”
“...hi there, little one”
“what the fuck”
“oh, so you see the aliens, too? well, at least im not crazy”
tony stark has left the atmosphere
you and your mom were kinda......not chillin tho
she and you didn’t sleep for a few nights, then ppl just straight up disappeared
plot twist: you survived the snap and your family was lucky to be alive, you even got a little sister who became a big handful!
only bad thing was all your friends dusted and you were pretty lonely
but watching morgan grow up kept you busy
“ahhh, shes so big!”
happy times in bad times
bad times!!!!! bc after five years thanos came back as thanos from like ten years ago. outdated thanos. obsolete thanos.
but you made your first and only appearance in the suit tony actually designed for you many years ago
you should have just stayed home tho bc that fight didnt pass the vibe check
“please dont tell me he...no, no, no, no, no”
you and your mom latched onto each other in tears, tony was one of the best people in your life, he made you and your mom two of the happiest people on earth
best stepdad a kid could ever ask for

What You Fear The Most
Word Count: 1538 For: @blueoatmeal
Summary: What if his ghost form was less human-looking? What if he looked every bit the monster his parents had always told him ghosts were?
You can read on AO3 or down below the cut!
Edit: I added a summary
Danny crawled out of the portal. Hand over hand, he pulled himself forward as he stretched and reached for the familiar tile floor of the lab.
He had to get away from the portal. It was too bright, and everything hurt, and he just wanted to crawl into a cool dark hole and never come out again.
Everything hurt but the strange sour buzz of the portal wasn’t touching him anymore so he collapsed onto the ground.
He wasn’t sure how the portal felt sour, but it did.
He lay there for a few moments, he wondered if the portal was the source of the buzzing or if his head was somehow filled with bees.
That didn’t make any sense at all. But with the whole feeling of a flavor thing, he couldn't be too sure.
He opened his eyes and stared at the tile below him.
It finally dawned on him that if the portal was making noises, and being bright, and feeling sour, that meant it was on.
He bolted up and turned to look at his parent’s, now working, invention. How had he, a simple high school freshman, managed to make his Ph.D. having parent’s greatest life work, work?
Also, that was incredibly painful, but he wasn’t dead?
Right?
He looked down at his hands and nearly screamed.
Scratch that. He did scream.
His hands, they weren’t his hands. You could hardly even call them hands at all. They were long skinny pitch-black claws.
He frantically searched the rest of himself to find it only got worse from there.
His whole body was as black as night, impossibly skinny and much longer than he remembered being a mere five minutes ago. He scrambled to the bathroom just under the stairs and stopped when he saw his reflection.
Only it wasn’t his reflection.
It couldn’t be! Could it?
The stranger staring back at him; the thing in the mirror was a monster.
It was hard to make out the details in the dark, everything was so dark in the place where he stood, even darker than the unlit room should be. Everything but the eyes.
His eyes. They were just pinpoints of light. Green light.
Just like the portal.
He didn’t just fix his parent’s machine. He also proved them right.
He proved them right by becoming the very monster they wanted to destroy.
Should he let them know what happened? Should he go and find them? Should he let them see him like this? Would it make him a better son if he let them destroy him?
Would they even know it was him?
He was glad there was a shower down here.
It was meant to be used in case of a spill. In case of a lab accident.
Well, this certainly qualified as a lab accident, didn’t it?
He climbed inside the unused shower and pulled the curtain closed.
He found his dark cool space to hide after all.
==============================================
He woke up to the sound of voices.
He groaned and rolled over.
Except he was not in his bed, or any bed, and rolling over led to face planting into the cold tile floor and accidentally pulling the shower curtain down on top of himself.
A couple of shower rings bounced harmlessly off his head but he still complained about it anyway.
He had just sat up and freed himself from the curtain when the bathroom door burst open.
“Danny?!” his mom called out to him before rushing over to pull him into her arms. “Oh Sweetie, we’ve been looking for you everywhere!”
“I’m sorry.” he apologized into her shoulder.
She leaned back on her heels and looked him over, “What are you even doing in here?”
“I don’t,” he looked at his hands and found that he was himself again. Maybe that monster thing was a dream?
But if that was a dream how did he end up here?
“I don’t know.”
Her relieved smile from finding him instantly vanished, “What do you mean you don’t know? What’s the last thing you remember?”
Being a monster.
“I think
” there had to be an explanation. Something that made sense and, hopefully, wasn’t horrible. “I think I saw something.”
He couldn’t look at her anymore. What if she saw what he saw? What if he turned back into that thing again?
“Do you remember coming down here? Down to the lab?”
He nodded. “I just wanted to take a look. Maybe if a different pair of eyes looked it over, the mistake would be obvious. You know, like when you have someone else proofread your paper before you turn it into the teacher?”
She nodded, “That was a good idea sweetheart, but why did you come down by yourself?”
“I thought if I found it I could surprise you, and if I didn’t you wouldn’t get your hopes up.”
She pulled him into another hug and kissed his forehead, “You’re such a sweet boy! How did I get so lucky?”
He held on to her, he felt so bad for making her worry about him. He tried so hard to make sure she didn’t have to worry about him.
That’s why he didn’t tell her about how the other kids at school picked on him all the time.
She pulled back again, “So did you figure out what we missed?”
“Kind of? I think I accidentally touched something. There was a click and it-” he didn’t finish. He couldn’t.
“It turned on,” she finished for him.
He just agreed.
“But why are you in the bathroom?” she asked with a concerned smile.
He looked to the mirror above the sink remembering those haunted green eyes and all the darkness. “I think I saw something.”
“What did you see?”
“I don’t know. A monster? It was too dark. I only really saw the eyes.” he looked back to his hands still unsure how much of what he saw was real.
“Were you trying to hide from it?”
He nodded and felt stupid for the tears that were threatening to spill.
“It’s okay, Baby. I won’t let it get you.” She hugged him again before she stood, “now let’s get out of here.” She held out her hand and he took it.
He wanted to ask her what she would do if it was too late. What would she do if it already had him? What if it was him?
But he didn’t ask. He just followed her lead.
He stumbled over the downed shower curtain but his mom was able to keep him upright.
His legs felt funny.
It was sort of like the tingle like when they fell asleep, but also not. It was more
spicy? Or was it sour again?
That wasn’t right.
He looked down and his legs looked normal enough.
“You okay?” his mom asked when she noticed he wasn’t following her.
“I think my legs fell asleep.”
He also might have hit his head at some point because these thoughts aren’t making any sense. How could he feel in flavors? Why was he doing that?
Should he tell her about that? No, she’d only worry. He didn’t want to worry her.
They walked out of the bathroom and past the portal. He did his best not to look directly at it.
They walked upstairs and she sat him on the couch. She put a blanket on his shoulders and told him to sit tight while she made him a cup of hot chocolate.
She said it would help warm him up.
He didn’t notice he was cold.
He didn’t contradict her. He just accepted the warm drink when it was offered.
He was starting to think that maybe, just maybe, what he had seen was some sort of hallucination. Maybe by the shock of what happened?
Oh, that was a bad pun, even for him. Also, too soon?
He shrugged it off. It was his accident, he could decide when jokes were too soon or not.
Besides, it was probably not real. Or at least not what it seemed. Maybe a ghost did get out and was just messing with him.
He obviously wasn’t a ghost himself. His mom had just checked his pulse and everything.
He was only cold because he had passed out in the bathroom.
He looked down at his cocoa to blow at the steam but stopped.
His reflection wasn’t right.
The eyes.
Those piercing green eyes stared back up at him.
It took everything not to scream. Took, even more, to not chuck the mug across the room.
He loved this mug. He wasn’t going to let this stupid hallucination-ghost-monster-thing make him break his favorite mug.
He blinked hard, purposely, and willed the image away.
He looked again.
It was still there.
The dark shadowy creature stared back at him.
He opened his mouth to try to get more air in. Why was it suddenly so hard to breathe?
It mimicked him.
Only it didn’t have a normal mouth. Its mouth opened like someone was ripping fabric apart. The edges were jagged and sharp.
He snapped his mouth shut.
It followed suit.
He looked up and just drank the cocoa.
It was ice cold.

Midvale.
Supercorp, Kara Danvers x Daughter!Reader, Lena Luthor x Daughter!Reader, Alex Danvers x Niece!Reader, Kelly Olsen x Niece!Reader, Eliza Danvers x Granddaughter!Reader
Word count: 2400.
“Stop it!” You push Jamie to the side and Alex looks to the both of you from the car’s rear-view mirror.
“Hey! You two, that’s enough!” Alex says and you look at Jamie making a silly face. She sticks her tongue out and you roll your eyes. “Have we gone back in time and you two became eight years-old kids again, or what?”
“She just keeps kicking me.” You complain.
“Oh, like you could feel it?” Jamie puts her foot in front of your face, but doesn’t touch you.
“I can’t feel your kicks, but I can smell this horrible smelly foot of yours.” You push her leg out of the way.
“Hey.” Kelly looks back at you two. “Enough, or you two won’t ride together again.”
“Fine.” You two say in agreement and two seconds later are laughing and talking about people from school.
“They’re just like me and Kara.” Alex says with a smile, and you pretend you’re not listening.
“Well, if we’re talking about looks, it’s like me and Kara are having a weird fight about smelly feet.” Kelly also has a smile on her face. It’s not long until you see Gramm’s house from your window and you see Lena’s car parking in the driveway.
“We’re here. Please, no more competition on who can eat more, we all know you can’t win Jam.” Alex says and you laugh at Jamie.
“You just can’t win, loser.” You whisper and she kicks you again. “Ouch. Oh wait, can’t feel a thing.”
“Ok, you guys are seriously riding back with Lena and Kara. I can’t take another drive like this.” Alex says and she finally parks the car. You and Jamie run out of the car to your Gramm’s open arms.
“Oh, my beautiful girls!” Eliza says with a smile and then she kisses both of your heads. “Let me look at you. Wow, Jamie you’re so tall! Look at you.” She cups Jamie’s face and smiles. She then turns back at you. “Don’t worry, you’ll grow too, sweetie. Kara also took a while”
“Thanks Gramm.” You force a smile and she laughs.
“I made your favorite cookies. Go on, it’s in the kitchen.” She says to you and Jamie, and you both run.
“Leave me some, cookie monster!” Kara yells and you give her a thumbs up before disappearing into the house.
You love going to Midvale. Part of it is because your grandmother’s cookies are the best on the planet, and she is the coolest and most loving person you’ve met. But also, because the family is always together, and Gramm’s house is the perfect place to hang out with all of them.
You’re eating the cookies at super speed, when you see Lena going inside the house carrying her own bag. You get up right away.
“Here mom, let me help.” You take the bag from her hand and she smiles at you.
“Baby, it’s not heavy. I can carry it. Go help your momma.” Lena points at Kara in the driveway trying to balance everyone’s bag on top of each other, like a bad game of giant jenga.
“Dear Rao.” You run to her, Lena’s bag still in hand, and you help Kara with some others.
“I could do it.” Kara says, head finally peeking out of the top of bags.
“I know. But you could also have asked me for help, you know?” You say with a smile and Kara smiles back at you.
“Thanks, little one.” You two walk together to the house. “How’s the cookies? Did you save me some?”
“They’re soooo good!” You smile. You go on the porch and breathe in the salty air. You love Midvale. Kara looks at you and it’s like she can read your mind.
“Yeah, I love this place too.”
It’s after dinner, and the whole family is seated in front of the TV when Gramm shows up with some old tapes from your momma and aunt Alex’s childhood. It’s so weird watching Kara when she was about your age, you look too much like her.
“See Lena? She’s me!” Kara points at the TV with a cocky smile. Lena rolls her eyes.
“She might look like you, but she thinks like me.” Lena says putting her hand on your shoulder and giving it a little squeeze, you smile back at them.
“You are all wrong.” Eliza says and you turn back at her. “She looks and thinks like herself. She’s one of a kind.”
“That’s true.” Alex agrees on your side and you smile at them.
“Thanks guys.”
You and Kara stand up at the same time. You hear sirens and screaming at a distance. There’s also a loud cry for help. Everyone stops what they’re doing to look at the two of you.
“You hear that?” You ask your momma and she shakes her head.
“Supergirl emergency.” Kara says running out of the house while unbuttoning her shirt. You run after her.
“Do you want me to go too?” You ask expectantly. Kara turns back on you.
“No, it’s ok, little one. I’ve got it.” She says and flies right after. You are still at the door, with your back turned to your family, but you can feel everyone’s eyes on you. You don’t even have to turn around to know they’re looking at you in pity. Your cheeks burn and you feel very stupid.
“Baby, come on, let’s watch your momma’s first Halloween on Earth.” Lena calls you and you breathe deep wiping one tear from your chin.
“I’m good. Think I’ll shower.” You turn on your heels and run upstairs, so they don’t see you crying. You see that Jamie mentions to run after you, but Alex holds her.
You take a long shower, but you don’t feel like going downstairs anymore. You know they’ll look at you like you’re just a kid, and you can’t deal with that.
“Hey, sweetie.” Eliza walks on the porch a while later, and sits next to you. “What are you doing out here all alone?” You shrug. She puts a blanket over hers and your lap. “No stars in the sky, no cute neighbors in sight. What are we looking at?”
“Nothing.” You answer and she snugs you on her side.
“Any particular reason on why you’re not with your cousin having fun?” You could hear your Gramm speaking all day. Her voice is so calm and sweet. You shrug again. “Ok.” She kisses the top of your head. “Did you know I am very good at reading silences?”
You breathe deep, still listening to the ocean. She gives you some time to think about it and say what you want to say.
“Can I tell you a secret?” You look at her and she shakes her head agreeing right away. “I went to the future in another reality.”
“You did?” She has a confused expression, but is trying to sound nonchalantly about it, like it’s something she hears every day. “That’s cool.”
“Not really. No one in the family knew me and I got to see what their lives would be if I didn’t exist.” You breathe heavily. “Jamie’s life was so much better.”
“Aw, sweetie. I bet that’s not true.” She tights the embrace.
“It actually was. She had friends and a boyfriend. She was a cheerleader.” Eliza smiles at the thought, like it’s a weird one. “She didn’t get stuck with a Luthor so no one hated her for no reason.”
“But I bet she didn’t have a best friend who is also her cousin and feels like a sister.” She says trying to calm you. It doesn’t work.
“Moms were fine too. I mean, they got excited when they found out about me, but I don’t know
” You get up from the couch. “What if everyone’s life was so much better without me?”
“Impossible. I know that for sure.” She stands up too and goes to you.
“You can’t possibly know that, Gramm.” She cups your face and wipes one tear that is falling. “Lena wouldn’t have to worry about me going full Luthor someday. And Kara, she wouldn’t have to worry about a kid wanting to go with her to fight villains.”
“Ah, there it is.” Eliza says too knowing. “Sweetie, she just wanted you to hang back and enjoy your family. Listen, come here.” She sits back and you reluctantly join her. “You will have your whole life to fight bad guys and save the world. You don’t have to rush into it.”
“I’m not rushing-” You start, but she doesn’t let you finish.
“I know it’s fun. Flying around? It must be awesome.”
“I just
I can handle, you know? I was all alone in a different reality, two years in the future, and I handled it.” You say and she shakes her head agreeing. “I could help her. But she doesn’t need my help, and Jamie surely doesn’t need me destroying her chances of having normal friends and I don’t know, a career as a cheerleader.”
Eliza laughs at that, and she puts her arms around you again, sits back and stays there in silence, and you feel there’s nothing she can say to calm you.
“You know, sweetie, you were not accidental. You have no idea how many sleepless nights Lena spent in the lab to figure out how to get you into this world. Or how many times Kara had to expose herself to Kryptonite so Lena could draw her blood.” You look at her with eyes full of tears. How did you not think about this before? “Do you actually think two people whose lives were better without you, would go through all that?”
“Probably not.” You say embarrassed and she smiles.
“Just remember that without you, something would be missing in all of our lives, and nobody would be able to replace it.” She kisses your head and you agree.
“Hey.” Jamie walks and looks at you two in silence. “What’s going on here? Why wasn’t I invited to the Gramm-granddaughter hang out?”
“Well, because your cousin here went to a different reality where she didn’t exist
”
“Gramm!”
“And now she is convinced your life would be much better without her.”
“That was a secret! You just told my secret.” You complain and what you get in response is a chuckle.
“God, sometimes you’re so dumb.” Jamie says and Eliza stands up giving her space to sit next to you. She disappears right after. “Seriously, how can you be so smart and so dumb at the same time?”
“Shut up, you weren’t there. I know what I saw!” You push her and she rolls her eyes.
“Ok, dipshit. What did you see?”
“You had friends. And you were a cheerleader. You were laughing and talking to people. Like normal people, Jamie.” You shake your head. “You didn’t have an alien Luthor next to you.”
“Oh, so I was laughing? That’s it?” Jamie grabs her phone and goes to her photo album. She shows you a picture of you two. “Like this?”
“Jamie
”
“Or like this?” She shows you a video of you two being dumb together. “Or maybe, I was laughing like this?” And another video. You try to hold a smile at the video, but you can’t. “I don’t need friends, and I definitely don’t need to be a cheerleader to be happy. I have a sister, that’s much better.”
“Promise?”
“Of course I promise! You take me flying. I’m pretty sure none of those friends could do that.” Jamie says and you hug her. You two stay like that for a while until you see Kara flying in and laying down on the grass in front of the house looking exhausted. Jamie breaths deep and elbows you, pointing at Kara. “You should go talk to her.”
You don’t even argue, you know she’s right. You fly down there, and lay down next to Kara. She doesn’t look at you, but she moves her hand to hold yours.
“You know, I’m still getting used to the fact that my kid, who is not a kid anymore, has super powers and is such a badass that can help me with saving the world and all
” She squeezes your hand. “Should’ve brought you with me. Things would’ve been a lot easier.”
“Yeah.” It’s all you can say.
“I hope you’re not upset.” She snuggles in you, putting her head on your stomach and holding you tight like you’re the mom and she’s the daughter.
“You know you can ask for help, right? We know you can do it alone. You’ve been doing it for years now.” You scratch her head. “You don’t have to do it alone anymore. At least not every time.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I have to learn how to ask for help.” Kara says and then she breathes deep. “Did you know you smell like home?”
“I do?” You smile to yourself. You’ve always thought your moms smelled like home. It’s good to know you smell like that to them too.
“Mhm.” You can hear her smile. “And sweets.”
“That seems about right.” You two laugh. She doesn’t say anything else, she just keeps hugging you, and you keep playing with her hair. After a few minutes, Kara stands up giving you her hand.
“Come on, little one. Let’s go to bed. We have our big Danvers competition tomorrow and we have to be well rested to crush the Olsen-Danvers, proving once and for all that the Luthor-Danvers are better.”
The Danvers competition is just an excuse for you all to come to Midvale a few times a year. And to laugh at Lena running, Rao bless her soul. You all play a bunch of stupid games Alex and Kara created when they were little, go to the beach and eat the best food in the world.
“Obviously.” You take her hand and stand up. “There’s no competition.”
There is some competition, if you’re being honest. But only because the Olsen-Danvers came well prepared this time. In the end, the Luthor-Danvers won by two points, even with Gramm (the referee) clearly trying to get the Olsen side to stop losing.
The weekend is incredible. You look around at your family and smile to yourself. Your Gramm was right, something would be missing if you weren’t here. Yep, you really love Midvale.

Face to Face- Chapter 35
Summary: When Danny went through the ghost catcher, he expected to be cured of the ghostliness that had haunted him since the accident, not to wake up on the lab floor with his parents saying he’d been overshadowed but everything’s back to normal now. But why does Danny Fenton cry himself to sleep to then dream of flying? Why does Phantom, the ghost who was supposedly possessing Danny remember a life that wasn’t his? Most of all, why do both the human and the ghost feel that something vital is missing, in their very soul? Or: Trying to cure himself of his powers one month after the accident, Danny accidentally splits himself but neither his ghost nor his human half know that that is what they did

Note: I'm back with a new chapter, luckily a little faster than last time. XD Since I posted the last chapter, I also posted my Invisobang story so I hope you check out that story if you're interest. After reading this update though, of course ;) Happy Reading!
In the lab, Fenton paced back and forth, anxiety buzzing in his veins. This was turning into the most stressful ten minutes of his life. Err...no, the accident was more stressful. Or telling his parents about Phantom. Or getting lost in the Ghost Zone just an hour ago. Or...actually he’d been under a lot of stress recently.
“Danny.” Jazz interrupted his frantic activity. “Is everything okay?”
The boy froze, turning to look at his sister. He bit his lip. Things weren’t okay but
. Fenton closed his eyes, slightly pushing his perception away from the lab to
. His breath hitched. Neon green bloomed in his mind’s eyes. A flash of blue and...the image was fuzzy, from a distance but...there in front of him were two ghosts on a motorcycle and out of the corner of his eye...Mom! His heart fluttered, beating faster in a mix of relief and anxiety. Phantom’s lips were moving but the exchange of words felt far away. Fenton couldn’t pick them up, nor those of the other three people. Finally, the other two ghosts left and...tears... Mom was crying. She was hugging him. She-
“Son?”
Fenton pulled back, gasping. His eyes blinked open. The...lab? Right, he was here in the lab, waiting for Phantom to come back with Mom. Mom
.His heart ached, even as he let out a breath of relief. “We found her. Mom’s okay.”
“She is?” Dad asked, eyes widening hopefully.
Fenton nodded. “Phantom’s got her. They’re flying back now.”
The large man visibly sagged in his seat, tension easing. Jazz let out a sigh of relief. The human Danny let out a breath as well before flopping down onto one of the stools. The trio sat in silence for a small eternity, held in eager and somewhat nervous anticipation. Fenton’s eyes flickered to the portal, searching for any sign of movement. Then
.the green mist rippled; he could almost feel the cold dampness on his skin. Fenton blinked and two figures slipped through the portal. The boy’s shoulders relaxed, face softening with relief.
“Mom.” He breathed, as Jazz exclaimed the word.
At the same time, Dad stood. “Maddie!”
The large man barreled forward, just as Phantom was moving to help Mom to her feet. Dad swept the woman and the ghost boy up in a hug.
“Jack.” The woman gasped, slightly surprised.
At the same time, the ghost boy let out a startled squeak. Fenton winced in sympathy.
“You’re both okay.” Dad continued, undeterred.
“Yeah.” Phantom breathed, squirming slightly in the hold. For just a moment, the ghost flickered intangible. Then he stumbled away from the pair of adults.
Both parents pulled out of their hug and turned to face Phantom. At the same time, Fenton stepped forward to stand beside his other half.
“Sorry.” Phantom blushed, looking down. “Didn’t mean to do...that.”
“It’s alright, son.” Dad soothed. “I got a little excited there.” A small smile graced his face. “I’m just so happy everyone’s here and safe.”
“Me too.” Jazz stepped forward, joining the rest of the family. She wrapped her arms around her mother in a hug. “You’re alright? Right Mom?”
“Yes, sweetie. I’m fine.” The woman nodded. “Your brother found me.” Mom looked up, her eyes meeting Phantom’s over Jazz’s shoulder. Her expression softened before her gaze flickered to the human Danny.
Fenton swallowed, feeling his stomach flop even as he held the gaze. After a long pause, the woman gave Jazz a pat on the shoulder and pulled out of the embrace. She then stepped around her daughter, approaching both versions of Danny. Her wide, misty eyes glanced between the two.
“Danny, baby.” Worry creased her forehead. “After you...after Phantom flew off...I thought...I didn’t know
if that would affect your other half but
.” Her lips quivered. “Are you both okay?”
The human boy winced at the question, wrapping his arms around his waist. He glanced at his other half before answering. “We’re fine
at least physically.” His voice tapered to a whisper at the last word.
Guilt flickered across Mom’s face. “We have...we have a lot to talk about. But
” Her eyes shone with affection. “I’m so happy you came looking for me. And you came home.”
Phantom shrugged, trying to look casual. “I wasn’t gonna just leave you there.” He muttered.
The woman opened her mouth, thinking to reply. Her mouth closed and then she sighed. “Still...I was so scared, when you ran off. I’m...I’m just so happy you’re safe.”
Fenton looked down, guilt swirling through him. He remained still, even as his mom stepped forward, wrapping one arm around him and the other around his ghost half. “I love both of you so much.” She whispered.
A sense of deja vu overtook the human Danny as he couldn’t find it in him to reply. This had happened just minutes ago with Phantom, hadn’t it? And yet...the memory of that interaction passed through his mind, with the same conflicting emotions. He wanted to believe Mom’s words, he really did. But
‘if Mom doesn't love you, then she doesn't really love me.’ Mom could say the words but if she didn’t really mean them...if she still didn’t accept Phantom
.
The ghost boy pulled away and a moment later, his human followed. Both boys looked down, unable to look at their mother. Then there was a cough to the side. “Let’s go upstairs.” Dad said surprisingly softly. “Your mother’s right. We need to talk about things.”
Fenton looked up. He swallowed nervously, even as he nodded. The group of five trudged up the stairs, Dad first, followed by Jazz, then Mom, and finally the Dannys with Phantom coming last. The ghost glanced back at the lab, his eyes flickering to the portal. Fenton paused, brows furrowing as he noticed the action. Then he gently grabbed his other self’s arm and pulled him up the stairs.
No words were said; none were necessary, but emotions were shared through the touch. Anxiety, fear, relief, hope, pain. So many feelings. Fenton didn’t know how to handle them. Everything hurt but...he hoped. Mom had said she was sorry earlier to Phantom, hadn’t she? She was acting like she was sorry but

Fenton looked up to find his mother sitting in the armchair, looking uncomfortable. In front of him, Dad placed his hand gently on his sister’s arm. “Jazz, please go upstairs. Your mother and I need to talk to your brother.” The words were serious and melancholic but said gently.
The other teen frowned, starting to argue. “But...I can help. Danny...he needs me-”
“Jazz, honey.” Mom interrupted. “Please. I...we can handle this. I know...I know I made mistakes.” Again, her cheeks reddened with guilt. “But
It will be okay; we can fix this.”
Jazz’s brow wrinkled, a severe look flashing across her face. Then her expression softened. She turned to look at both versions of her brother, who were still hovering nervously at the threshold between the kitchen and living room. “Danny, do you...want me here for this?” Her eyes flickered to their mother before her voice quieted. “I told you earlier, I’d go with you to talk to her if you wanted.” She frowned, raising an eyebrow pointedly.
Phantom blushed, his face turning green as he shifted nervously in the air. “No. It’s...it’s okay. Dad’ll be here.”
Jazz’s frown deepened, her eyes meeting Fenton’s. “Are you sure?”
The human boy nodded. “Yeah. It’s...you should go upstairs.”
His sister stayed staring for a long moment, still looking very much displeased. Then she heaved a heavy sigh. “Fine. I’ll go.” She turned back towards the stairs, her deeply worried expression changing into something severe and maybe even judgmental as her eyes passed over their mom. Then Jazz walked across the run and up the stairs. Soon, she disappeared down the hall and the sound of a door closing rang through the quiet house.
More tense silence froze Fenton in his spot, his heart pounding anxiously in his chest. His eyes carefully avoided the adults who were both now sitting.
Dad spoke up first, from his seat in the recliner. “Come on and sit down, son.” He leaned forward, patting the couch.
The pair of Dannys glanced at each other before Fenton started forward with his ghost half following after. Both sat side by side on the couch, shoulders tense and heads hung low. Fenton balled his fists in his lap. Now that his relief about Mom being safe had drained out of him
the pain, every word of that argument came flooding back. The human felt his ghost half shift in his seat beside him and so he looked to his side. Phantom opened his mouth briefly, looking like he wanted to speak, but then his jaw snapped closed. Fenton bit his own lip. He understood the feeling; neither of them knew what to say, how to start.
Mom made the decision for them. “Danny.” She started softly and Fenton looked up. “I am so sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I shouldn’t...I shouldn’t have said any of what I said. I...I promised I would listen to you but... but I didn’t and
” She sniffled. “I just...I just yelled at you and
” Her voice shook with emotion. “You said...you thought I didn’t love Phantom. I...I made you think that but
I swear, I love you so much. You’re my baby and...I
I’d do anything for you. I love
 I love you so-”
“Stop.” Phantom cut her off, voice pained. Fenton could feel his heart aching as the emotional dam broke. “You...you say that but
you said...you said I’m not supposed to be a ghost. You keep...you keep acting like there’s something wrong with me. And you wouldn’t even
even admit it. That...that you treat me different from Fenton or
” Mom winced at the words but they kept pouring out of the ghost. “Or barely look at me...or touch me
 or
” Phantom sniffled, eyes watering. “I can’t...I can’t be what you want. I can’t be...be normal. I...I tried and this is what happened. All that horrible stuff you think...think about ghosts...you still think that about me. And
” His voice cracked, no more words able to come through as he started crying.
Fenton was crying too, feeling every single word in his heart even if they hadn’t been said with his mouth. He cried too, wrapping one arm around Phantom in a useless attempt at self-soothing. Even after Mom’s attempted apologies, even after she’d ventured into the Ghost Zone without a plan to find him, even after everything, the fears welled up. He felt sick with it, his insides churning.
The human boy barely registered when the couch shifted. “Danny. Danny baby, I’m
I’m so sorry.” Fenton looked to the side, following the sound of his mother’s voice. He winced. The woman had moved to sit beside Phantom, her arms wrapped around him. The ghost didn’t react, helpless in his tears. Mom pulled him closer. “No. I don’t...I don’t think that about you. I know you’re...you’re good. You’re not a...a monster. I never... never should have said that. I was wrong.”
Fenton whined, low in his throat. “Then why
 why do you treat us
 us differently? Why wouldn’t
 wouldn’t you admit it?”
One of the woman’s hands moved to grab the human’s shoulder. “I hadn’t even realized it but
 you’re right about
 everything you
Phantom accused me of. I was treating you two differently. You were right about me
 about me.... Hesi
 hesitating to touch you
 or look at you.”
“Why?” Phantom whimpered.
There was a pause, a sniffle. Then the woman answered. “I’ve been...I’ve just been so afraid.”
The ghost flinched, briefly flickering invisible. “Of...me?” The words were so quiet, so broken.
Mom shook her head vigorously. “No. No. Never. I’ve just...I’m...I’m so afraid of hurting you again.”
That made Phantom pull out of the hug. “What?” He frowned, Fenton copying the action.
“I’ve...I’ve already hurt you so much. The...the accident...the portal...my portal, my invention already hurt you. And...and I split you in half and
”
“Maddie.” Dad finally interrupted the words. “Both of us did that, not just you. That...this is both of our faults.”
The woman looked up, shaking her head. “No. But I’m...I’m the one that shot him, Jack. I...I shot you
” Her eyes flickered to Phantom. “I...I shot you and I’m...I’ve been so scared of hurting you again. I’ve been
been trying to keep you at an arm’s length to protect you. But I didn’t realize I was still hurting you.”
Fenton pursed his lips, at a loss of what to say. His ghost half had no such problem, anger briefly flashing across his face. “Yeah, well...you still did. You still
.you still said I’m wrong and unnatural. You still said I’m supposed to be alive, like I have any control over that. You still said I wasn’t supposed to be a ghost.”
Mom glanced down, guilt darkening her checks before she looked up again. “You’re right I did say those things. I shouldn’t...have wanted you to be something you can’t be. It’s just
” She sighed, eyes watering again. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Ghost Danny grimaced, eyes narrowing harshly. “Really?”
The woman swallowed, looking even more guilty. “At least...that’s not what I intended. I meant...none of this was supposed to happen. The accident
 it shouldn’t have happened. You...you shouldn’t have been hurt...you shouldn’t...shouldn’t have d...died because of my...my invention. But
” She gasped, voice trembling. “It was my negligence, my carelessness that did this to you. It was...it was my fault. You never should have been down there. I never should have made you clean the lab. It never should have been your responsibility.” She took a shaky breath. “But when...when I found you down in the basement after the accident..you weren’t...you weren’t breathing.”
Fenton gasped. “Really? I didn’t
 I didn’t know that.”
Mom didn’t directly reply, pinching her eyes closed. “That was the worst five minutes of my life. I’d thought...I thought I’d lost you.” The grief was enough to bring new tears to both boy’s eyes. “But...your heart restarted and you seemed miraculously okay after the hospital and then...and then I learned about this
” Her eyes opened, looking at Phantom. “The portal...my portal killed you. It killed you. And...I’m so scared of losing you again. There’s so much I don’t know about ghosts. And-”
“No. Mom, that’s not
” Phantom interrupted. “You didn’t...you didn’t lose me. You’re not going to lose...to lose me.”
“I know that. I know that now.” Mom replied with conviction, looking at the ghost. “You’re still here. And that...that makes me so happy.” One hand moved to cup Phantom’s check. “I’m so happy you’re still here.” Her eyes moved to Fenton, her other hand touching his face. “I’m so happy that you survived. You’re still alive...at least partially.”
The words were not as comforting as she likely intended. The human Danny bit his lip. “But...what if...what if I wasn't?”
“What if I was just Phantom?” His ghost half continued the thought. “What if I was just a ghost?”
For just a brief moment, Mom’s eyes widened in surprise. A complicated mix of emotions crossed her face- wariness, uncertainty, fear, sorrow. Then she swallowed, a new determination passing her features. “Then...it would...it would still hurt but...I’d be happy to still have my son here, even if he was different.”
Ghost Danny didn’t pull away, even as hurt flashed across his features. Instead, his hand reached up to grab the woman’s other arm, the one that was reaching for Fenton’s face. The action drew his mother’s eyes. “But Mom
” He bit his lip. “I’m already different. That’s what I’ve been trying to get you to understand. I’m a ghost...a real ghost. And I don’t... I don’t want to be an exception just because I’m part human or because I’m your son. I just
” Tears ran down his face. “I just want you to accept me for who I am, ghostliness included.”
Mom’s eyes widened again, her hands pulling away. She studied Phantom’s face, before her eyes flickered to Fenton. “You...all of you thinks that.” It wasn’t a question so much as a statement. Then the woman shook her head. “Of course you think that. You keep telling me that and
” An understanding passed over her face. “I’m still not listening. I...I really need to do better, don’t I?”
Fenton and Phantom didn’t say anything. What could they say? It was true and all of them knew it.
“Both of us should do better, Maddie.” Dad spoke, making both boys gasp softly. They’d forgotten that he was here. The man blushed, looking guilty. “I should have noticed what was happening and pushed to talk about things sooner.”
The human felt his heart clinch. Oh how differently things could have gone if they’d tried to have this conversation as the four of them first, instead of Mom and Phantom alone.
Mom shook her head. “That might be true. But
this is on me. I should have noticed.” Her eyes flickered between the two Dannys again. “I shouldn’t have made you feel like this. I was too caught up in my own grief and fear. I haven’t been the Mom that you’ve needed.” She paused, conviction shining in her eyes alongside the guilt. “I should have noticed you were hurting and... it was because of my behavior. I messed up but I want to do better.” She took a breath. “How can I do that? How can I make this up to you?”
For a long moment, both Dannys were silent, processing the apology. Fenton bit his lip. It...it sounded authentic. That conviction, admitting to mistakes, the willingness to take responsibility. And they’d...they had wanted this apology so badly. But...should they trust it? Maybe, start with
.
The two Danny shared a glance, contemplating how to reply to the question. Finally Phantom sighed. “We don’t...we don’t know. Maybe
” He wrung his hands in his lap. “Don’t freak out if I use my powers or...you know...talk about being a ghost.”
“Yeah.” Fenton agreed, mustering all the confidence he could. “It’s not like it’s a bad word. It’s just...how I am now and...I’m okay with it.” The boy said the words and for once, no guilt accompanied them. They were...they were the truth.
The same could not be said of their parents. Mom’s lip turned down, her face reddening with guilt. “Sweetie...That...that should go without saying.”
“But,” Phantom softly argued. “You have freaked out
.or
” He blushed. “You
.well...you’ve looked at me weird, like you’re...un...uncomfortable.” Getting out the words was so hard. “So...so
.I don’t feel like I can use my powers or talk about...stuff.”
“Hey, Danny-boy. It’s okay.” Dad said. “We talked about this, remember? You can talk to your Mom and me about anything. I want you to come to us if something’s bothering you. Or if you just want to talk. Or not talk, just hangout. We’re here for you.”
For just a brief moment, the guilt returned. Dad had said that last night. But...both Dannys were still hesitant.
“But you are right.” Mom continued. “This is your home. You’re supposed to feel comfortable here, like you can be completely yourself. And I have not been making you feel that way. And
” She took a breath. “You are a ghost and you have ghost powers. They're your powers.” The words were said with only the slightest hesitance, like they still hurt at some level but...Mom was trying. The woman put hands together, looking more determined. “So how about this? I gave my full permission to train your powers.”
Phantom blinked, startled. “What?” At the same time, Fenton asked more excitedly. “Really?!”
“Yes.” Mom confirmed with a nod of her head. She held up a finger. “In the lab with us and
” She glanced at the other adult, whose eyes shone with a hint of excitement. “We’ll have a training session in the next few days, before we finish with the Ghost Catcher. If that’s alright with you.”
The ghost boy looked at his counterpart before answering tentatively. “Yeah. We can do that but...what about just...general ghost power use?”
Fenton didn’t say anything, pleasantly surprised by the bluntness.
“Danny. They’re your powers.” Mom continued after a pause. “You said...it feels natural to use them. I meant what I said before, it would be cruel to forbid you from flying and
I do trust you.” She vowed.
There was a pause as both Dannys took in the words, again surprised. Phantom bit his lip. “You do? But
”
Mom reached out to touch his arm. “Yes, Danny. I trust you. And I should have never let that waver, not with this.” She comfortingly squeezed, eyes flickering to Fenton. “I know that having ghost powers hasn’t changed you deep down, not where it counts. You’re still my son who’s responsible and knows to be reasonably careful.”
“And to fess up if you’ve messed up or accidentally broken something.” Dad added with wide affectionate eyes. “Which you probably will. You’ve got my clumsiness.” The corner of his lip turned up. “And those powers are tricky. So, it’ll be alright, right son?”
“Um...yeah.” Fenton replied, with a slight blush as a warm feeling rose in his chest. Did that...was he actually starting to feel better?
“And speaking of fessing up
” Mom said. “I am so proud of you for talking about this with us now. And earlier...it took a while but you told us about your powers and you told us what the ghost catcher really did. And I’m proud of you for that.” The woman offered a slight smile. Then her lips turned down again, more serious. “You trusted me with the truth. And I know I’ve broken that trust. I want to earn it back. So...do you think we can work on that?”
Fenton’s heart squeezed. He glanced at Phantom and
“Yeah. We can...we can try.” And he would try. Both parts of him would but there was a lot of trust that needed to be rebuilt.
Mom gave a nod. “Alright. We can start with what we talked about, the training and freely using your powers. And
” Her eyes focused on Phantom, eyes again wide with conviction. “From now on, if you’re uncomfortable, tell me. This is your house; you’re supposed to feel like you can be yourself.”
The ghost’s lip twitch. “O...Okay.” Beside him, Fenton swallowed. Well...that was a tall order. He couldn’t...he couldn’t promise that.
Dad seemed to notice the discomfort. “Or tell me.” The man added. “Just don’t keep bottling it all up, son. Your mother and I just want to help you. We want you to be happy and safe.”
“And we’ll do everything we can to do that.” Mom continued. “Is there anything else you need us to do?”
The human Danny bit his lip and glanced at his ghost. Okay...they could consider being more willing to talk to Mom and Dad. And training and using their powers freely was exciting. But still, there was more.
Fenton sighed. “About your theories about ghosts
.uhh
.” The boy trailed off, unsure where to exactly start on the problems there.
“Your mom and I already talked about rethinking them.” Dad started.
“Or rather, throwing out the old hypotheses all together.” The woman frowned. “We need to look at everything with fresh eyes. And gather more information. Like I said...there’s so much we don’t know.”
“But what we do know is, we can’t assume any ghost we find will be thoughtless or emotionless.” Dad added with a nodd.
“Or malevolent.” Mom said. “We’ll proceed with an open mind and hope for the best. We do want to go through the portal at some point and observe ghosts in their native environment.” The corner of her lip turned up. “Maybe we can find some other humanoid ghosts to talk to...just talk to.” Her expression then shifted, turning more serious. “But...this won’t be until after we get you re-fused. As we’ve said, you’re our priority, Danny.”
Both Dannys nodded, considering the statement. Then Phantom agreed, biting his lip. “That sounds good. I’m...uh...glad you’re gonna rethink studying ghosts. Just talking’s good.”
From his seat in the recliner, Dad’s eyes widened slightly. “Oh, speaking of talking to ghosts
” A hint of excitement lit in his eyes. “You said that you talked to a ghost who helped you find a portal back home. You said he was called...Sidney?”
Mom’s eyes widened, flickered to her husband and then to Phantom. “What?!”
“Uhh...yeah
” The ghost boy rubbed the back of his neck. “His name’s Sidney.” His eyes met Mom’s. “So...long story short, there’s like...a metaphysical line between me and Fenton because...same person. So I...uh...followed it to find him and the line led me to a portal that’s actually in Sidney’s lair and opens up into one of the locker’s at school.”
The woman blinked. “So
you found a portal...inside this ghost’s...lair?” Phantom nodded. “And it leads to...a locker in your school?” This time, Fenton nodded. “And this portal...you got back home through it?” Both Fenton and Phantom nodded. “Which means...you went back through our portal to find me.” Mom blew out a sigh, her voice a mix of surprise, amazement, and a little worry.
“Yeah.” Phantom shrugged, though his cheeks flushed green. “I wasn’t gonna leave you.”
The adult’s face softened. “Oh sweetie
” She shook her head. “So this ghost...you talked to him?”
The ghost boy nodded. “Yeah. He actually taught me some stuff about the Ghost Zone and uhh...ghost etiquette, I guess. And apparently...the ghosts have a word of people like me. We’re called halfas.”
Both adults blinked, taking in the words for a long moment. Then Dad’s eyes lit up. “Halfa! Human you said that earlier, in the Fenton GAV. What else did you learn?!”
Fenton slumped slightly, overwhelmed by the sudden excitement. “Can we...uh..maybe talk about this later?”
Dad’s expression fell, disappointed. A hurt look flashed across Mom’s face. “Danny sweetie...whatever happened, you can tell us. I promise we’ll keep an open mind.”
The human boy’s eyes widened slightly, guilt briefly flaring in him at the reaction. “No Mom, it’s not that. It’s just...there’s a lot.”
Phantom nodded. “I learned a lot. Tons. It’ll be...a long conversation and
”
“I’m tired.” Fenton continued, sudden weariness overtaking him as he yawned. “I heard...I saw everything that happened...in the lab.” He paused briefly, stomach only slightly flopping at the memory.  “And...I got kinda pulled to Phantom when we ran off
” Mom and Dad both looked confused so he clarified. “My part of our mind...It’s like...I wasn’t aware of what our human body was doing because...I was with Phantom.”
Dad frowned. “So...like two people in one body? But...you’re the same person?”
Phantom shrugged. “Yeah it’s confusing. It didn’t last very long but...a lot happened and...I’m tired too...like mentally and emotionally so
” He trailed off, unsure.
Mom’s expression softened. “I understand, Danny. We can talk about that later. You can go upstairs and take a nap if you want to.” She moved from where she was stilling to crouch in front of both boys on the couch. “I’m so happy you’re back and you’re safe.” She leaned forward to kiss Phantom’s head... “And I love you so much. Phantom and Fenton.” And then Fenton’s. “Ghost and Human.” Neither boy flinched at the kiss, nor did they shy away as her eyes met Phantom’s before flickering to Fenton’s. “Thank you for talking to me and giving me another chance.”
“Yeah. Mom. We love you too.” Both Dannys said in synch.
And they did; that had never changed. Everything that had happened before, all the words and actions, all the pain, all of that hurt badly, so badly. But...that was because they loved their parents.
Mom stood and stepped to the side and Dad moved to kneel in her place. His big arms wrapped around the pair. “I’m happy you’re safe too. And...I know it was hard but...I’m glad all of that’s in the open now. Now we can start dealing with it and getting better.”
Fenton squeezed back, returning the hug. “Yeah. You’re right.”
“You’re right. Thanks Dad.” Phantom squeezed as well.
The man pulled away, his eyes watering. He enthusiastically patted both boys' knees. “Now go take that nap. I want you bright-eyed and bushy tailed to tell me all about your adventure in the Ghost Zone.”
That earned a chuckle from Phantom even as he blushed. “Yeah. That’s a word for it.”
Fenton shook his head, the corner of his own lip turning up. He glanced up, catching a slight glimpse of Mom’s subtle smile as Dad stood and stepped back. The human boy rose to his feet. “Come on, Phantom.”
“I’m coming.” The ghost also rose and floated beside his human as the pair went up to their room.

The Other Side
Phic Phight Oneshot for Kiinotasha and KC: (AU) Born a halfa and raised in the Ghost Zone by his mother, Danny struggles with his human identity when a permanent man made portal appears in the Ghost Zone.
On AO3 and FFN
-------------------
Danny never questioned his life until that man made portal spawned. He never forgot when he first saw it six years ago while playing with Youngblood.
Naturally, they were playing aliens and spacemen, Danny's favorite. Earlier in the play session, they had found it, and it was deemed part of their spaceship. It was just a metal outline, an octagon. Thick enough that they could sit, and they pretended that the limited space was the entrance. Obviously on the left side was space, and the right side was their ship. Eventually their moms called them home, and during dinner when asked about his day, he told his mom about it.
She frowned, and she asked him for more details. Having played on it all day, he described it perfectly. His mom paled, and she forbid him from going there again, but she didn't expand on why.
He saw no reason to be afraid. It was just a metal shape. There were far more dangerous places in the Ghost Zone. So the next day, he told Youngblood about his mom's weird reaction. His mom had reacted the same, but didn't say why. His dad explained that it was dangerous, but not what about it was dangerous. Danny didn't have a dad, but he was sure that if he did, he probably would have said the same thing. But neither child could get it. What was dangerous about a shape?
So they just played with it again the next day, and they lied to their moms about what they did.
Two years later, another ghost had join to make them a trio. Her name was Box Lunch, and she was honestly a lot of fun. But she was still a girl, and they didn't tell her about their secret fun location until they were sure she didn't have cooties. When they showed her, she instantly knew what it was.
"That's a ghost portal!" she exclaimed. Youngblood and Danny thought she was stupid. Ghost portals didn't stay anywhere permanently. They opened and closed at random, when the human world and Ghost Zone would temporarily merge and allow for a rip to tear. But it always mended back together quickly.
"No it's not," Youngblood scowled. Box Lunch made a face at him.
"Yeah-huh!" she insisted. "My mommy and daddy get into the human world all the time! She said some people there have been trying to make a permanent portal to here!"
"Nu-uh!" Youngblood argued. "My dad said that humans wouldn't do that, they're more afraid of us than we are of them!"
"Yeah-huh!" Box Lunch said more forcefully. "My parents were human once, they said that people constantly wanna hunt us in the human world! And that they're coming here!"
"If they're afraid of us, then why come here?" Youngblood challenged.
"What else would it be?" Box Lunch asked, crossing her arms.
"It's a weirdo ghost's lair!"
And as they bickered back and forth, Danny had remained quiet. He didn't know how to feel about any of this. His friends often forgot that Danny wasn't just a ghost. He was also human.
Not that he was a ghost who was once human, that died. He was both, and he always had been. Born that way, according to his mom, because his dad was human. Danny didn't know too much about him, and he never really thought to ask.
He knew that his name was Jack, and how he looked like. His mom had hung a photo of him in his room so that he'd know; blue eyes, black hair, with a square jaw and in a distinctive orange jumpsuit. The orange suit always reminded him of the blue one his mom wore underneath a lab coat. She said he looked just like his dad when he was in his human form, and he could absolutely see it. Though as a ghost he had white hair that he seemingly inherited from nobody, with his mom's light blue skin and yellow-green eyes. As a ghost, he matched with a black jumpsuit, though as a human, he preferred regular clothes.
Most ghosts had learned of Danny's true nature early on as the news slowly spread when he was born. They loved him and accepted him as one of them. He could go out into the Zone as a human, but it always felt weird. So he was always a ghost.
That night, as he got tucked in for bed, he decided to bring the metallic object up again.
"Box Lunch said that the big metal shape is a permanent ghost portal," he blurted out. His mom stared at him with wide yellow eyes, and so he knew that Box Lunch was actually right. "Is it?"
She sighed, sitting on the edge of his bed.
"I believe so," she confirmed. Danny sat up.
"Is that why you don't want me going near it?" he asked.
"Yes," she replied. Danny cocked his head curiously.
"But if I'm also human, wouldn't they be okay with me?" he wondered. His mom paused for a long, long time. "I'm also one of them."
"I don't know, honey," she admitted. He could tell that she did know. She kissed his forehead. "I'll talk to you about it when you're a little bit older, okay?"
"Promise?"
"I promise. Now good night, sweetie."
It was four more years before it really became relevant again. He had essentially forgotten about the unoperational portal as homeschooling, other friends, and general undead life had continued on for him and his mom.
Youngblood didn't age, since he was once human and died, and so as Danny got older, they hung out less. While Box Lunch, a born ghost, grew, he became distant from her too for unrelated reasons. Danny wasn't alone, however. For a while, he hung out with other ghosts who had died young before he met his best friend. He was a bit older than him when he had died, sixteen to his fourteen, but Johnny 13 (and his shadow) and him had almost instantly become friends and hung out nearly every day. Often his girlfriend joined them too. His mom also allowed him to keep a newly dead dog that had followed him home, that alternated from a puppy to a large hulking beast of a monster dog. Danny named him Cujo.
Ghost Writer provided lessons in the arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays for him and a few other younger ghosts, which did include Johnny and Kitty. On the other days, his mom homeschooled him in her passion: the sciences. His favorite memories were of him and his mother in her lab, doing home experiments and building a wide variety of things.
She indulged in whatever nonsense he wanted to build, which included but wasn't limited to: rock cannon, small spaceships, figuring out how they could grow potatoes on the moon like the man in the martian book did, using ecto energy to cook poptarts.
Often her friend, Technus, but better known to Danny as Uncle Nico, came by to do more of the tech-based stuff. Danny believed that Uncle Nico could do anything with technology. He was one of the ghosts that often went through the natural portals, and whenever he came back, he had something for Danny. Typically game consoles and games, but sometimes fun little useless knick knacks that Danny treasured deeply. He fixed those game consoles many times, and also showed him how to download and install cheats and mods to make them more fun.
And after a morning full of science or the arts, Danny would eat lunch then rush off to play with his friends, Cujo always on his heels.
Looking back, he never did much as a human. He had to resort to his human side to rest, or would default to it if he fell asleep. It felt weird being in human form amongst ghosts, and so he was just always a ghost. He never thought much about it, and nobody ever asked him to be a human around them. It was just how things were.
On the day he'd never forget, it was just him and Johnny. His girlfriend had opted not to come. Danny couldn't remember the original topic, but it made him remember the portal. As soon as he told Johnny about it, the two idly scratching Cujo as the dog slept in between them in puppy form, the ghost's eyes lit up excitedly.
"Dude! We have to check it out!" Johnny insisted.
"I dunno," Danny hesitated. "My mom said that I should stay away."
"Come on, it'll be sick! I've always wanted to go back to the human world," Johnny begged. "And you've never even been there, despite being half-human!"
Danny paused. Well, when you put it like that...
"Okay!" he agreed. He floated up from his seat a bit so he could untangle his legs to stand. Cujo immediately got up from his spot laying near them, tail wagging excitedly. "Let's go! I think I still know where it is!"
It had changed since he last saw it. It now had huge yellow and black doors in place of the previous blank space, and it seemed somehow bigger than he remembered it years ago. But it was unmistakably the man made portal.
Even now, he didn't get what would be too scary about it that his mom would encourage him to stay far away. It was just a door.
"This is so fucking cool," Johnny whispered as he touched the door. "Imagine...no more trying to hunt down a portal. We can just come and go as we please...seeing our lost loved ones...seeing my mom again
It's been so long...I dunno if she'd even remember me..."
Danny didn't say anything, but he did begin to think and truly wonder for the first time what his dad was like. His mom never talked about him, and he never really asked. He and his mom were happy, and he also had Uncle Nico. Was his dad kind? Did he also like science? Why wasn't he here? Did his dad even know about him?
"Do you think we can open it?" Danny asked. Cujo licked his fingers, and Danny scratched his head. Johnny glanced over his shoulder at him.
"I dunno," he admitted. His hand turned into a fist and he knocked on the door. "It seems really solid. I don't think we can just break it or something."
"Hm. Lemme see," Danny mused. He came closer, and he put his hand on the door. It was cold, and Johnny was right; it was metallic, just like the outer edge he used to play on, and it would not break easily. His finger traced the middle line of the two doors. "Hm. Maybe we can pry the door open."
"The humans made this," Johnny spoke. Danny stared at him. No shit. "No, no, I mean. Maybe you should do something to it as a human." Danny thought on this, and he shrugged. Couldn't hurt.
His transformation rings came and went, leaving him in his human state. He was just in a t-shirt and jeans today, and he stayed floating near the portal.
His hand had barely touched the portal when it opened for him.
Danny gasped in shock, jerking his hand back as it opened. Johnny had also jumped, going backwards a bit, and Cujo's fur went up as he barked. It fully opened, and he couldn't see anything but the green ooze. This wasn't anything like Uncle Nico had mentioned natural portals being like. They normally acted like a window you could see through. But it was an unnatural portal made by man.
"Maybe this isn't such a-" Johnny began, but Danny had already stepped through.
There was a weird in between area that shined bright blue that he never heard Uncle Nico describe. But in this in between, he could see exactly what the ghost had mentioned. He knew he was still in the Zone, but he could look out the portal into the human world like a window.
A man in an orange jumpsuit, with black hair that was graying, was sitting in a room that reminded him very much of his mom's lab. He was staring at the portal in confusion, likely because it had randomly opened, and Danny instantly knew who it was. He had no idea if his dad could see him, but he found himself rushing backwards, and back into the Zone.
The second he returned, he became a ghost again, and he silently began to fly away as he tried to process. Johnny asked no questions, only following, Cujo following them both.
That night, at dinner, he finally asked.
"What was dad like?"
His mom stared at him for a moment.
"Well, he was very sweet," she said slowly. "Very bubbly personality. Always went out of his way to help his friends." She smiled softly as she talked about him. "Adored fudge."
"Did he like science?" Danny wondered. His mom gave a short laugh.
"Oh boy he adored it. Not the best at it, but he had a lot of enthusiasm," he replied. "We used to do experiments together all the time."
Danny stared down at his food as he thought. He looked up to her, and he could tell that she already knew what he was going to ask.
"How come I never met him?" he wondered. She sighed.
"...He doesn't like ghosts," she replied. "Aspiring ghost hunter when I met him, actually. I was alive then. Had the same ambitions." At his shocked look, she laughed again. "I know, ironic. We had dated for about two years officially. But then...I died. It was winter, and I was driving late at night during a snowstorm. My car slid off the road, and into a river. And I died from my injuries. I found that I could disguise myself as human, and I was in denial. So I just...continued on."
"...Why?" he asked. His mom shrugged in defeat.
"I guess I just didn't want to admit that it was over. I hadn't done everything I wanted to do yet. I was still in college, and I felt like my life had been forcibly finished before it had even truly started," she admitted. "Jack had proposed, but I had declined. I was too afraid to tell him. He began pursuing ghost hunting more seriously as a profession and building weapons and portals. I found out I was having you, and he was so excited to be a dad. I began getting scared. I didn't know how long I could continue the lie. I didn't know how it all would affect you. Then the police found my car and body, and I knew I couldn't avoid the inevitable any longer. So I left. I had no clue how to face him, or even how safe you might be if we talked. Especially after you were born, and I realized that you were half ghost."
The more she talked, she more somber she became. By the end, she was sniffling a little. Guilt began to wash over him.
"Have you ever talked to him again? Like after I was born?" he wondered. She shook her head no. "How come you've never taken me to the human world?"
"I had considered it. But it's too dangerous," she explained. "Humans aren't like ghosts. If they knew that you were also ghost...you wouldn't wanna find out what happens."
"...Do you regret any of it?" Do you regret me?
She smiled softly despite the conversation.
"You were the best thing to ever happen to me," she told him. "I may have been very anxious about being alone, and how you may turn out despite it all. But you were born healthy and perfect in every way. You're absolutely the light of my afterlife."
Danny smiled back, feeling some reassurance. His mom stood up, leaning over to peck his forehead before picking up her plate. He heard Cujo scramble out from under the table, ears up in excitement.
"I think I'll finish this later," she told him. "I'm not too hungry tonight." She glanced down at the dog. "This isn't for you."
Cujo whined, following her as she put her plate in the microwave. Danny nodded, sparing a small smile to Cujo and ushering for him to come over. He slipped him a piece of chicken as his mom left.
Later that night, Danny couldn't sleep. He was too busy sorting out his rushing thoughts. He was of course still him. Nothing really changed, but there was this new growing emptiness. Danny was still Danny, but there was a whole other side to him that knew nothing about. It began to eat at him more and more. Who was this human side besides just human Danny who lived in the Ghost Zone? He didn't know.
He now wished that his mom had taken him to the human world before so that he could know. She did say that there was a risk in the humans knowing he was also a ghost, which he didn't get. The ghosts accepted him as one of their own, so why wouldn't the humans? He didn't get humans at all. And he needed to know more about them. He was one of them.
By breakfast, his mind was made up.
After an unusually boring lesson with Ghost Writer together, Danny immediately went to Johnny once their small class of sorts were dismissed.
"I have to go back." Danny couldn't breath for a moment. "I have to see what it's like. Like you said, I'm also human, and I've never been there. All my unlife, I've been a ghost, here, in the Ghost Zone. My dad's in the human world. And I need to know what it's like to be human. What it means. So I can maybe meet him one day."
Johnny nodded.
"I think I get it," he said slowly. "I'll come with you. Keep you company. I think I could pass for human pretty well, even if I have to say that I have some kind of sickly disease that keeps me pale."
Danny grinned.
"Thanks," he replied. "Come on."
It took no time at all to find the portal. Danny stared up at it, his breath once more stolen as he tried to think of a reason why he shouldn't go through it.
Nothing came to mind.
"It's okay if you don't wanna," Johnny said. Danny shook his head no.
"I have to do this," he replied. "I need to do this."
Johnny patted his back, and that was all the subconscious encouragement Danny needed to turn human and press his hand to the door. Once more, it opened. The fact that he's even able to open it made him know that this was something he was meant to do. He once again stepped through with Johnny right behind him.

pieces - chapter fifteen
Five years ago, Chloe dropped off the face of the Earth. Beca didn’t expect to see her again dancing in a strip club, out of all places.
rating: E (drug use and emotional abuse in early chapters)

Beca had never felt blood-running cold panic as she did when she saw the blood on Chloe’s hand. She tried to remain level-headed for the sake of taking Chloe safely to the hospital, white-knuckling the steering wheel as she drove, all the while talking with Dr. Harris through her car Bluetooth system to let her know what was going on.
A nurse was waiting by the ER entrance with a wheelchair, and they rode up to the obstetric floor, the silence in the elevator deafening. They were led to an exam room and Chloe was asked to change into a gown, being given a pad and disposable underwear, which Beca helped her put on.
The bleeding wasn’t as bad, but that didn’t mean it lessened her worry. If Chloe lost the baby
Beca wasn’t sure she would come back from it.
“Hello Chloe,” Dr. Harris greeted as she came in a couple of minutes later, casting them a soft smile and a nod. She rolled the ultrasound machine closer. “Let’s take a look. Anymore cramping since we were on the phone?”
“No, just those two times,” Chloe answered, reaching for Beca’s hand as she lifted up her gown for the doctor to apply the gel.
Beca watched Dr. Harris like a hawk as she focused on the screen, looking out for any hint in her features that could indicate something was wrong. After what felt like the longest minute of Beca’s life, the doctor finally spoke.
“The ultrasound looks normal Chloe, no evidence of placental abruption, but I’d like to run some bloodwork to be sure,” she explained, glancing at Chloe as she lifted the wand and set it aside. “We’ll monitor you and the baby closely until we get the results, alright?”
Placental abruption. Beca had read about that in the baby book, but she couldn’t remember how serious of a condition it was. She nonetheless puffed out a breath as the doctor didn’t look too alarmed, and squeezed Chloe’s hand.
Chloe nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
A nurse came by shortly after to strap a band around Chloe’s belly, which tracked the fetal heart rate. The steady beeping sound coming from the machine further allowed Beca to relax, and she remained by Chloe’s side as the nurse collected a few samples of her blood to be sent out to the lab.
As the nurse departed, Beca let go of Chloe’s hand to tuck a strand of red hair behind her ear. “Do you want anything to drink or eat?”
Chloe shook her head. “No. I’m okay.” Her lips curved into a small smile. “Thanks, though. You should sit down, I think we’re going to be here for a little while.”
Nodding, Beca glanced behind her and grabbed a stool tucked in the corner, reaching for Chloe’s hand as she sat down. “Should I call your parents?”
“No, not yet. There’s no point in worrying them before we know more.”
“You’re right,” Beca murmured, nodding once more.
Silence descended upon them, save for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor. Beca rubbed Chloe’s knuckles back and forth, hoping the movement was somewhat soothing.
Dr. Harris came by ten minutes later and checked the numbers. “I’m still waiting on the lab results, but the heart rate’s good. I’ll come back to check on you in half-an-hour.”
“Thanks, doc,” Beca said before she walked out, casting her a grateful nod. She turned back to Chloe. “I’m going to get myself something to drink, okay? Sure you don’t want anything?”
“Maybe some sparkling water?”
Beca smiled. “You got it.”
The vending machine was just down the hall, and Beca got herself a coke and Chloe’s water, heading back to the room a mere minute after she’d left.
“One sparkling water,” she said, setting it on the bedside table.
“Thank y--” The rest of Chloe’s sentence was cut off by a sharp cry as she doubled over, and Beca’s heart lurched to her throat when the beeping on the monitor increased.
She rushed to the open door, nearly colliding with a nurse coming in. “We need some help, the heartbeat, it--”
“I’m paging Dr. Harris,” the nurse interrupted as she read the monitor, then checked under the blanket, revealing a large pool of blood.
Beca paled, her eyes zeroing on the amount seeping into the sheet while Chloe curled up in pain.
“What’s going on?” Dr. Harris asked as she strode in.
“Gush of blood, heart rate’s dropping,” the nurse told her urgently as she kept her eyes on the monitor. “Now in the 60’s.”
“We’re going to the OR,” Dr. Harris announced as she clicked the bed railing into place. “Chloe, it looks like your placenta has abrupted and your baby isn’t getting enough oxygen. I need to perform an emergency c-section.”
More nurses rushed in, and Beca didn’t know where to stand as they bustled around her. She jumped out of the way when they pushed the gurney towards the door.
“Bec,” Chloe cried, fear flashing in her gaze as she was rolled away. Beca snapped out of her daze and grabbed her hand, walking alongside the gurney.
As much as she wanted to, Beca couldn’t tell her everything was going to be okay, instead of saying the only thing she was sure of. “I’m here, Chlo.”
They reached the flapping doors which read OR in big letters, and one of the nurses stopped Beca from going further. “You need to get suited up first, honey. Follow me.”
Beca swallowed and nodded, her shaky legs somehow managing to carry her to a room on the right. “Shit, I forgot-- she can’t have any morphine.”
Chloe had told her that a few weeks ago when they talked about possible complications during labor.
“The doctor probably knows, but I’ll go tell her right away.”
Before the nurse left, she gave Beca a pair of scrubs, a hair cap, mask, and booties to put over her shoes. Beca slipped everything on, and then, she waited.
She paced up and down the room, her hands wringing together as she tried to focus on her breathing and not the many terrifying scenarios popping up inside her brain. The nurse finally came to get her after what felt like an hour when it was probably just ten minutes and led her to the OR through a side door.
Chloe laid on a different bed in the center of the room, a sheet blocking her view from the chest down. An oxygen mask had been placed over her mouth and nose, and she turned her head when Beca approached, tears swimming in her eyes.
Various medical staff buzzed around the crowded room, cleaning, shaving, sterilizing, but Beca chose to focus on Chloe because that was her only job here. Being there for her, during what was probably the scariest experience of her life so far. She sat on the stool provided and took her hand, pressing a lingering kiss to the back of it.
“I’m shaking all over,” Chloe’s voice wavered as she spoke.
“That’s normal, sweetie,” a nurse let her know as she stopped by her. She patted Chloe’s shoulder, the crinkling at the corners of her kind eyes indicating she was smiling beneath her mask. “It’s just the anesthesia working.”
It was another five minutes or so before the procedure started. Beca remained wholly focused on Chloe, one hand clasped around hers while the other rhythmically stroked her hair, and she spent the next ten minutes murmuring sweet nothings to her while the doctor and nurses worked to get Bean out.
“Here we go.” Dr. Harris’ voice caught Beca’s attention, and she pushed to her feet to see her take the baby out and hand her to another doctor standing nearby. “Baby’s out, Chloe.”
“Is she okay?? Why isn’t she crying?” Chloe stammered, twisting her head to look at Beca. “Bec, tell me what’s going on,” she pleaded, tears seeping out of her eyes and running down her temples.
Truth was, Beca wasn’t sure what was going on. A team of three people was working around the incubator, and the man was talking about a tube. She watched as he inserted a tube down Bean’s throat, attaching a bag to it. It was a mere ten seconds before they rolled the incubator away and out of the room.
That same nurse popped in on Chloe’s other side. “Your baby isn’t breathing on her own, so they had to intubate, Chloe. She’s being taken to the NICU.”
A sob wrenched itself from Chloe’s throat, and Beca’s heart fell through her stomach as she once again felt absolutely powerless and unable to find the right words.
Chloe’s head rolled back towards her. “Go with her, please,” she croaked out.
Beca hesitated, as she didn’t want Chloe to be on her own either.
“I don’t want her to be alone,” Chloe added, squeezing her hand. “Please.”
“Okay,” Beca agreed with a nod. She bent down and pressed a kiss to Chloe’s forehead despite the mask on her face. “I’ll be back soon.”
She followed the nurse out of the room, her legs feeling even weaker than before. “31 weeks is good, right?” She blurted out as they walked down the hall, needing some sort of reassurance before she lost it altogether. “The odds of surviving
they’re high at this stage, right?”
“95%, yes. They’re running tests as we speak to assess her health and decide what treatment she might need if she does.”
Beca nodded, sucking in a deep breath. They reached the NICU waiting area shortly after. “It might be a while before a nurse comes to get you, you can dispose of your scrubs in the bin over there and have a seat.”
“Okay. Thank you.”
Beca took off her scrubs, cap, and mask, then took a seat, her knee bouncing up and down as she waited. It was probably another hour before someone came to get her, just as Beca was getting stir-crazy.
“Are you baby Beale’s other mom?” The middle-aged woman clad in dark purple scrubs asked.
“Um, no, the guardian,” she stated awkwardly as she stood, clearing her throat. “The mom’s next of kin.”
The doctor nodded. “I’m Dr. Miller, the attending physician. The baby is stable as we speak. Her brain scan came back clear and her heart is strong and steady, showing no defect. She however can’t breathe on her own because her lungs haven’t developed enough, and her birth weight is very low. This is our main concern as of now. She’s being fed with a tube, and how well she fares over the next week will depend on her ability to gain weight.”
Beca’s throat constricted and she swallowed thickly as she nodded her head, processing the information. Bean wasn’t out of the woods, and the next week would be crucial.
“Am I allowed to see her?”
“Of course.” The doctor turned and hit a button to open the doors, and they stepped inside an airlock with a large sink. “You have bacterial soap here, wash your hands and forearms for thirty seconds, then rinse and dry with those clean towels over there. A nurse will come to get you in a minute.”
“Thanks.”
Once the doctor had left, Beca did as instructed, meticulously washing her hands, under her nails and up to her elbows, then rinsed the soap off and dried her skin with the towels provided.
She then followed the nurse inside the room to the right incubator, her heart squeezing at the sight of the tiny baby hooked to a handful of wires and a ventilator. Sensors were taped to her chest, and she had a tiny tube lodged in one nostril. A small hat sat over her head, and she only wore a diaper.
“Am I allowed to hold her hand?” Beca asked as she sat down on the chair next to the incubator.
“Of course. You can talk to her, too,” the nurse said with a soft smile. “As Mommy won’t be able to get out of bed for the next 24 hours, I’m sure she’d appreciate a few photos and videos if you want to take some. I’m around if you have any questions.”
“Thank you,” Beca murmured, watching the other woman walk away before focusing on Bean. She watched her chest steadily rise up and down for a minute, before slowly reaching up to slide her hand through the hole on the side of the incubator. She gently held Bean’s tiny hand, stroking the back of it with the pad of her thumb.
“Hi, Bean. I’m your auntie Beca,” her voice shook as emotions gripped her throat. “I need you to be alright, okay? Will you do that for me? If you’re strong like your Mama, I know you’ve got what it takes.”
She didn’t know how long she would get to stay, so Beca took a bunch of photos and videos with her phone to show Chloe. She hung out with Bean for another hour, telling her all about her Mama as she held her hand.
“I need to go check on your Mama, but I’ll be back soon Bean, okay? Hang in there,” Beca said softly, retracting her hand and gazing at the newborn for another few beats before pushing to her feet.
A nurse led her to Chloe’s recovery room when she asked for her at the desk, and Beca rounded the corner to find Chloe sitting in bed.
Beca walked over and gently sat down on the edge of the bed. “Did the doctor come to talk to you?”
“Yeah, she said the bloodwork came back normal, and the main concern was feeding.” She sniffled. “Were you allowed to see her?”
Beca fished her phone out of the front pocket of her hoodie, selecting the video she had of Bean. “Here.”
She couldn’t imagine how difficult it must feel for Chloe not to be able to meet her daughter just yet, and she held Chloe’s free hand as she saw Bean for the first time, through a phone screen.
“She’s so small,” Chloe whispered, tears pooling in her eyes as she ran her finger over her daughter’s face. “I wish I could see her.”
“Tomorrow. I’ll keep her company until then,” Beca murmured, squeezing her hand. “Are you in pain?”
Chloe wiped a tear falling down her cheek away and shrugged. “A bit sore.”
Beca tilted her head to the side, having the feeling Chloe was downsizing her pain for her sake. “Did they give you anything for it?”
“They offered, but I said no,” Chloe said. “I don’t want to touch any of that stuff again.” She cleared her throat, continuing before Beca could argue. “The um, the doctor said giving Bean some of my breast milk would help. Will you get my breast pump from your place?”
“Yeah, of course. I’ll go right now. I’ll also grab you a couple of change of clothes and your toiletries. Anything else you might need?”
“My phone charger and my robe, please.”
Beca smiled. “You got it. I’ll be back soon.” She stood and brushed a kiss above Chloe’s eyebrow, closing her eyes as Chloe leaned into the touch. “Get some rest, Chlo.”
It was pushing six am by the time Beca made it home. Ignoring the need for sleep after an all-nighter, she took a quick shower, then packed a bag with Chloe’s things. The hospital wasn’t far, so she figured she could always come back to get more stuff in case she forgot anything. Right now, all she wanted was to be back by Chloe and Bean’s side.
Even if she knew Chloe might not eat much, she stopped by her favorite bagel place on her way back to the hospital, along with a cup of coffee after googling whether it was safe to have some while breastfeeding. She got herself one as well, with a double shot of espresso that would hopefully get her through the morning.
Chloe was asleep when Beca reached her room, and Beca didn’t want to disturb her. She set the bagel and coffee on the bedside tray, along with a note.
Went to check on Bean. Be back in a bit with news and more photos.
Beca xx
Once at the NICU, she followed the same protocol of hand-washing and sat down next to Bean’s incubator, where she was bound to spend the next few weeks.
“Hey Bean,” she whispered, smiling as the newborn legs moved. She slipped her hand through the hole, stroking Bean’s tiny fingers. “Where was I? I think I was just about to tell you the time where your crazy mom burst into my shower

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back  (Pt 2 of Seizing Life)
--------------------------------
As Loraine embraces her new freedom, her headaches get worse and new symptoms come to light. Lo wants her life to be normal but she can’t hide the obvious from her moms.
---------------------------------
Loraine enjoyed her new found freedom over the next few weeks. She was able to take the bus to school again and walk around the city on her own. She even got to spend her afternoons alone at home before her moms got home from work. It was a small thing, but it was the little pieces of freedom in her day to day life that she missed the most.
Today Loraine was homework free, a rare occasion given she went to a school hell bent on keeping students busy in preparation for high profile careers in demanding fields. Even though Loraine was exhausted, she decided to take the opportunity to make a stop at L-Corp to see what her mom was up to in the lab. She loved visiting L-Corp and seeing and playing around with the prototypes.
“Hi Mom!” Loraine greeted as she walked into the lab. Lena was focused and looking through a microscope. “Whatcha working on?” Loraine sat on one of the lab stools opposite Lena. The teen’s body had been feeling a bit achy lately, possibly a side effect of going out and being more active thanks to her new found freedom.
“A new biologic
” Lena was still focused on the microscope. “Its part of the cancer research I was telling you about.” Lena finally looked up.
“As much as it is always a wonderful surprise to see you Lo, shouldn’t you be at home finishing your homework?” Lena raised a warning eyebrow. She couldn’t really be made at Loraine for visiting, but she felt it was her parental duty to instill some boundaries. Lena also didn’t want Loraine staying up too late, she had noticed Loraine seemed tired a lot more lately.
“Finished it during lunch.” Loraine beamed with triumph. “Plus I haven't visited in awhile and figured it was time to see what you're doing to my future empire.” Loraine often joked with Lena about taking over the company.
“Your empire, huh? Nice try, but you’ll have to earn it first Loraine.”
“I know, I know
. Just making a prediction”
“Come here I want to show you something R&D just sent.” Loraine followed Lena over to another lab table where a small cellphone sized device was displayed along with a slew of other engineering tools. “It's a therma projection radar. It can scan a person and project health risks for vital signs.” Loraine picked up a calibration tool and was fiddling around with it as Lena explained the science. Aparatenly the prototype was under performing and Lena was going to make some updates to it herself before considering any further manufacturing options.
Clang clang. The tool that had been in Loraine’s hand crashed to the floor. Lena immediately stopped and looked at Loraine.
“Lo, you have to be more careful.” Loraine quickly picked up the tool and set it back down on the table gently.
“Sorry” Loraine apologized to Lena, hoping the tool wasn't anything custom made.
“It's ok,” Lena looked at Loraine trying to see if there were any signs of a potential seizure. Loraine noticed Lena’s concerned gaze.
“Mom, I’m fine. Just a little clumsy.” Loraine reassured and sat back down on the lab stool trying to conceal a yawn.
“And tired.” Lena added.
“Ok, clumsy and tired.” Loraine conceded and looked down. She hated when her mom got overly concerned about her. Even though she knew it was her mom’s job to be worried about her, Loraine couldn’t help feeling like a burden.
“Are you sleeping ok at night?” Lena asked as she started packing away her research.
“Yeah, I get plenty of sleep. It’s just been a long week that’s all.” Loraine tried to brush it off.
“Just let us know if you aren’t feeling well sweetie.”
“I’m fine.” Loraine rolled her eyes and gave a heavy sigh.
“Ok.” Lena raised her hands in surrender not wanting to push the teen too much.
The pair headed off home in Lena’s private car shortly after. Even though Lena had more work, she wanted to give Loraine the chance to relax and maybe take a nap before dinner. Lena even got an email from Loraine’s science teacher expressing concern over the fact that Loraine fell asleep during his class.
The ride was relatively quiet. Lena went through emails on her phone and Loraine just stared out the window trying to stay awake. The teen had had a dully headache for the past several days and it was starting to turn into a pounding headache. When they were finally home and in the garage, Loraine moved rather slowly to exit the car, her headache making her feel off balance. Every movement felt like a lot of work given how tired and achy Loraine was. Lena was out of the car and already waiting for Loraine near the door, wondering what was taking so long. Loraine stood up from the car, but the ground felt strange and unsteady. Loraine braced herself on the car and squeezed her eyes shut, the unsteady feeling made her feel slightly nauseated. Loraine tried to take a step but stumbled forward and fell to her knees. The driver rushed over to help Loraine up as Lena did the same.
“Lo, are you ok?” Lena asked holding Loraine’s shoulders.
Loraine nodded and gave a small embarrassed smile. “Thanks Felix. I’m fine, really.” Despite her words Loraine’s voice seemed a bit shaky. Felix made sure Lena and Loraine were safely inside before taking off.
Loraine had minor scrapes on her knees with minimal blood and mere scratches on her hands, nothing to be concerned about. Loraine’s movement still felt awkward and slow which she blamed on being tired.
“Let's take care of those scrapes.” Lena walked toward the bathroom and looked back to see if Loraine was coming too. She noticed that Loraine was moving slowly and with greater care, as if she were afraid of falling once more. The truth was, Loraine still felt unsteady with each step and she just wanted to make it from point A to point B without another fall.
Lena had Loraine sit on the small chair in front of her vanity as she kneeled and cleaned and bandaged Loraine’s knees and hands. Loraine was too tired to react to the sting of the antiseptic cream. When Lena finished up, she remained on her knees looking into her tired daughter’s eyes and asked once more.
“Sweetheart , are you sure you’re ok?” Lena waited for Loraine to respond, but the teen just looked away. “Its ok if you’re not. I just want to know so I can help.” Lena took Loraine’s hand in her own and noticed the teen’s hand was shaking. All Lena wanted was to comfort and reassure her daughter. When Loraine finally looked back it was with tears trickling down her face.
“I’m just really tired.” Loraine admitted quietly. She didn't have the energy to explain how the ground felts funny and besides she didn't want her mom to have even more reason to worry. Lena whipped away Loraine’s tears. She was relieved Loraine was talking to her but also worried there might be more to it than exhaustion.
“That’s alright sweetie. Why don’t we get you in bed, hm? You can rest and I’ll come wake you for dinner. How’s that?” Loraine nodded in agreement and let her mom help her up and to her room. Loraine didn't even protest at the assistance. She was too tired and unsteady to pull herself together enough to get there anyway. Lena was surprised at just how unsteady Loraine was.
Loraine slept for a couple hours, but was still exhausted when Lena retrieved her for dinner.
“Mm not hungry.” Loraine mumbled into her pillow.
“Sweetheart you have to have a little something to eat with your meds.” Lena gently pulled back the covers and ran her hand up and down Loraine’s back, which always seemed to coax Loraine out of a deep slumber. Instead of leaving, Lena helped Loraine up and stayed beside her just in case Loraine needed the support. Lena was happy to see that sleep seemed to do Loraine some good as the teen made it down the stairs without a problem.
“Grandma Eliza still wants to know if you want cinnamon rolls or blueberry muffins for Christmas breakfast Lo.” Kara looked to Loraine, waiting for the teen’s response. Loraine had been awfully quiet throughout dinner and barely touched her food. “Loraine?” Kara tried again.
“Just weighing my options,” Loraine joked, “it's a big decision, but I’m leaning toward the muffins.”
“Good choice, those muffins are legendary.” Kara had tried many times to bake Eliza’s recipe but it never turned out quite right.
Clank Loraine dropped her fork causing a loud reverberating noise.
“Sorry!” Loraine quickly picked up her utensil from the floor and went to get another from the kitchen.
“That's alright sweetie. While you’re in the kitchen could you get me a glass of water?” Kara asked.
“Sure.” Loraine retrieved the water and clean fork and dinner went by as usual. Kara noticed Loraine’s hand shaking as she set the water down in front of her. She gave Lena a concerned look, but Lena was already watching her daughter’s every move. The parents silently agreed to discuss later.
As dinner continued Loraine seemed more and more withdrawn. She altogether stopped moving and was staring blankly at her plate. Internally Loraine was entirely consumed by the throbbing of her head, so much so that she was oblivious to the conversation around her. Lena got up from her seat and went to kneel by Loraine so she was eye level with her daughter.
“Lo, sweetie, what's going on?” Lena asked in a quiet voice. Lena knew from her extensive research on seizures that not all types of seizures involve convulsions, some can simply look like someone staring blankly and being unresponsive.
“Hmm
” Loraine seemed to come to, “Wh
what?” Loraine was trying her hardest to focus on her surroundings now, which was still difficult with her headache.
“Are you feeling ok, Loraine?” Lena asked, still kneeling in front of Loraine. Kara was up and prepared to help in any way possible if Loraine was about to have a seizure.
“Sorry,” Loraine looked down to her plate then back up, “I’m just a little out of it... I think I just want to lie down.” Lena looked at Loraine unconvinced. Kara made sure Loraine got into bed ok before joining Lena back downstairs. To her surprise Loraine didn't even protest at the help, the teen was too out of it to realize what was happening.
“How is she?” Lena asked.
“She’s exhausted, maybe even coming down with the flu or something.” Kara was lost in thought and concern. “I’ve just never seen her like this. I mean sure it was bad last year, but this is different, isn't it?” Kara looks to her wife, who is on her phone typing.
“Alex agreed to see her tomorrow to run some tests.” Lena looked up from her phone. “You’re right, this is different or
” Lena trailed off in thought but shook her head.
“What is it?” Kara asked.
“Its
what if Loraine doesn't have a seizure disorder. What if the seizures were just one symptom of something else.” Lena had done extensive research on pediatric seizure conditions as well as other conditions that caused seizures. There were a few conditions Lena was concerned may match Loraine’s current state.
