I do want to point out:
Ludinus knowing Laerryn's name is not, in and of itself, proof that he was alive during the Age of Arcanum.
Laerryn was on his list of "people to reach out to." But this document was in his home in Molaesmyr, a city he arrived in 500 years post-Divergence. Why would he keep that document, knowing that Laerryn fell with Avalir and that her body was irrecoverable? Why would it be pinned on his wall like it's important, over 500 years after Laerryn's death when speak with dead is off the table?
We know that Avalir itself is known about in present-day Exandria by esoteric scholars and specialists. Imahara Joe has a book that talked about it, so it's not like it's completely forgotten, and honestly, the entirety of the Ring of Brass were so involved with Avalir's internal politics and inner workings that there's no way their names weren't written down a hundred times over in various records, reports, and news clippings. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Ludinus was able to get ahold of this information, especially with Laerryn being so prominently involved with Avalir's most intricate arcane mechanics and experiments.
So I think that this list was of people Ludinus wanted to contact using the contact other plane spell. It reads as follows:
You mentally contact a demigod, the spirit of a long-dead sage, or some other mysterious entity from another plane. Contacting this extraplanar intelligence can strain or even break your mind. When you cast this spell, make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, you take 6d6 psychic damage and are insane until you finish a long rest. While insane, you can’t take actions, can’t understand what other creatures say, can’t read, and speak only in gibberish. A greater restoration spell cast on you ends this effect. On a successful save, you can ask the entity up to five questions. You must ask your questions before the spell ends. The DM answers each question with one word, such as "yes," "no," "maybe," "never," "irrelevant," or "unclear" (if the entity doesn’t know the answer to the question). If a one-word answer would be misleading, the DM might instead offer a short phrase as an answer.
Personally, I think that Laerryn would most definitely count as "the spirit of a long-dead sage," as would most other pre-Calamity archmages (which I can only assume Vishtaron and Vatora were). The spell is on the wizard and warlock spell lists, so it's entirely within the realm of possibility for Ludinus -- plus, it even plays into his particular flavor of anti-theist magic, since it's essentially a non-divine version of commune.
#critical role#critical role spoilers#critical role c3#critical role campaign 3#note watches c3#ludinus daleth#laerryn coramar seelie#exu calamity#yes I am 100% certain that speak with dead was not available to Ludinus in relation to Laerryn.#even without considering the fact that it's not on the wizard or warlock spell lists#Laerryn died in the heart of Avalir as it was engulphed in flames and leyline-altering magic#and as it was /plummeting to the ground as its engines failed/#there's absolutely no way there was anything left of her body#let alone something whole enough to cast speak with dead on#but the fact that contact other plane is on the warlock spell list further enforces my theory#that Ludinus is a Great Old One warlock and not a wizard#but I digress

love ur baldurs gate 3 oc so much. idk anything about the game but i genuinely likes him. i wish hes a real character bc i would buy the game for him
thank you anon i know this message is weeks old but ily and also im going to use this ask as an excuse to dump information about him now (swagdor lore (swaglore)) for anyone who cares
general stuff;
hes 49 years old as of game time
necromancy wizard, learned scholar, heavy interest in the boundaries between life and death and undeath, researching different types of resurrection unrelated to god worship (just not a big fan of asking for favours yknow)
stoic even keeled personality, reacts neutrally or stone faced to most things (this does not mean hes uncaring, hes got a curious nature). he used to be very showy and loud when he was younger, he finds that now very embarrassing
used to be a leader of an adventuring band in his 20s, fell apart when his group were defeated in battle leaving him lone survivor, wasnt a necromancer back then
has a distinct lack of self regard, half of him believes he'll be more of use untethered to the chain of mortality (undead in some fashion, or just thinking his corpse more functionally useful) the other half is just still struggling with survivors guilt (lol)
wanders around looking for old crypts and tombs to help his arcane pursuits, do-good's alot accidentally while he does, though most people get scared of him when he reveals the necromancy magic so hes got a mixed reputation (has some sort of misnomer like The Specter of so-and-so that wyll probably recognizes and laughs about)
will go along with just about anything if it amuses him, and has a weird sense of humour. hard to catch off guard or fluster, he yes-and's people alot to see how far they'll go with something or out bluff them (sometimes this causes them to try and beat the shit out of him)
truthful about his feelings when asked, but rarely volunteers his thoughts on things of his own accord, this gives him a weirdly mysterious image at first to most people
treats his raised corpses with care befitting living beings outside combat, and used to even raise some for company even if they were functionally just puppets.
he likes skeletons more than zombies (smell…)
his fake in game quest line is called 'The Wandering Necromancer' and involves inquiring about his old adventuring days of times past and learning why he's so into skeletons. He eventually reveals his past and you can bring up his groups old misadventures (oh my god you were the backstreet boys???) and he is very embarrassed by it. He reveals his group was felled by a lich, and he never found their bodies so hes always been curious on a way to speak with them again somehow.
plot continues BLAH BLAH eventually you find out that lich is still around and swagdor's old friends are now in its undead service so you go to kill it <3 but on the way he considers if he should take the lich's place so he can have his old companions around again (even if they're in his undead service) and try to give them some semblance of new twisted life again. You either help him with the preparations (yay phylacterys) or go bro you need to Move On. Man. and instead choose to release their souls when the lich is killed.
swagdor is stronger as a lich but also becomes even more detached from concepts of mortality (his sense of danger is basically nill now regarding others... its okay if u die ill bring u back somehow :) <- unnerving smile) and also all his dead friends are talking to him in his ear so he's constantly got a sense of being away from everything.
unliched swagdor moves on properly and begins The Healing Process (better late than never king) and seems more present in current ongoings, finding a place he can really set his feet. He's also less obsessed with death but sees his necromancy instead as a means to help and speak with wayward souls of the dead.
useless trivia corner: his names swagdor bc i based him off an old div2 oc i made when i was playing that game with aqua, where i used one of the randomly generated names they gave me and put the word swag into it (lol) i now am using his div2 swagdor's adventures as a semi basis for his new bg3 versions background thats why his younger versions outfit is based off that one captain armour set i never took off in that game

@enchiiridion liked for a starter!
If there was one thing that Elminster hated, it was not knowing things. The old wizard, left with nothing but the a modest cloak and hat and a wooden sword at his side, was more confused than he'd ever been. That was saying quite a bit: El was no stranger to visiting realms and planes of existence that absolutely confounded him, but he'd always (well, most times) had an anchor: the weave. A tether of magic that permeated and surrounded all things at all times, the fuel for arcane life and the source of magical power. His patron, Mystra, Goddess of Magic, had always wrapped the weave around El like a caretaker tucking in a child... but there was little to feel here. Nothing was as it should be- he found that he could cast "Shield", which meant that there was *something* to this place. His understanding, however, was simply far too little. If the weave was here, it was spotty and random like an artist flicking paint at a canvas in hopes of making a unique design. There was no beauty to be found in that for Elminster, however. Only fear. What good was a wizard without his powers, or the knowledge that he'd spent thousands of years trying to better understand? He could recount untold wars and alchemies, the natural and unnatural world as he'd known it was as much his playground as it was his own canvas. Here was just... confusion. He'd seen so many people already- royals and fighters, people who appeared to be from a time and place close to his and yet also those of varying shapes and sizes. None of it made sense... this realm was chaos. Perhaps that was why his brain sent him going to the only place that made sense: the library. Surely even in a place as chaotic as this, hallowed halls filled with works from learned scholars would reel him back in like a feisty fish on a line! It had taken asking many people, likely confusing many with his confusion and desperation, but eventually he was pointed to the Spirale Annals. "Good," he said aloud as he entered, "I shall find myself as many books as these old bones can carry, I shall obtain sustenance for my research, and I shall begin all over again. I have conquered the mysteries of many a realm before- what is one more under my repertoire?"
#elminster#ill take your entire stock of books#ooc: his first meeting about to bring him to tears watch#enchiiridion#enchiiridion-1

Azalin reviews Darklord Vecna
Domain: Cavitius Domain Formation: 750 BC Power Level: 💀💀💀💀 💀 Sources: Vecna Lives! (2e), Vecna Reborn (2e), Die Vecna, Die! (2e), Book of Artifacts (2e), Domains of Dread (2e), Dragon Magazine #402 (4e), Vecna Dossier (5e)
Vecna is known by many names. The Master of the Spider Throne. The Lord of the Rotted Tower. The Maimed God/Lord. The One Named Only in Whispers. The Whispered One. The Dying King. The Undying King. While imprisoned in the Mists of Ravenloft, he was known as the Chained God. Aren’t we all?
The ‘history’ surrounding the lives of those that ascended to godhood are obscured by time, embellishments, and outright lies of their followers. Vecna’s is no different. Likely only Vecna, who holds onto secrets like a miser holds onto copper pieces, knows the full truth in these matters.
Vecna was born on my home world of Oerth. Many powerful wizards hail from Oerth: Mordenkainen, Iggwilv, Acerarak, and myself to name a few, but Vecna was said to be the ‘greatest of all wizards’. Though, his life is said to pre-date the ascendancy of the Suloise Empire, so there weren’t likely many wizards to compare him to at the time.
His origins on Oerth aren’t well known, though new information indicates he was born into the peasantry and studied magic in secret when he was forced into servitude after his mother was exiled for performing ‘dark magics’ e.g., the best kind of Necromancy. Despite this recent glimpse into his life, some believe he is from another plane of existence and others say his Rotted Tower simply sprung out of the deeps of the Lake of Nyr Dyv. More likely he was born and rose to power in more traditional and less fantastical means.
Vecna was a master of the arcane and he conquered entire regions of Oerth by creating armies of the undead, constructs, and mortals subjugated to his will. As city after city fell to Vecna’s might, it was not enough for him for only Vecna’s ego could surpass his arcane prowess. Newer scholars believe Vecna rose up against his Master’s and with the whispered voices of an unknown entity (the Serpent, perhaps?) penned all of his evil into the Book of Vile Darkness. Given some of the ‘feats’ in this book of his, I can confirm that it is aptly named.
How did Vecna become a god? Well, the one truth that remains consistent among the many tales surrounding this lich is he had a lust for power and domination that, regardless of how much he took, he could never satisfy. The Zarovan Vistani tell a tale in which Vecna became obsessed with overcoming death after his dear mother passed. An extreme reaction to the death of a parent, but it seems to be a requirement of lichdom to have parental issues…
In his quest for eternal life, Vecna is said to have bred entire villages purely for the purposes of experimenting on them and that he reshaped the landscape of Oerth with his magics – many claim that it was Vecna who created the Bright Desert. Given he was not even a lich when he apparently accomplished these feats, it is more likely that he caused a bit of a drought once with some ill-conceived weather magic.
Vecna used Necromancy to extend his life as he continued to search for a way to extend it indefinitely. There are some that say Vecna was cursed into lichdom by powers greater than his own to punish his pride and arrogance. Though, if that was the case they should have targeted Mordenkainen by now. There is also the mysterious entity known as the Serpent that speaks directly into Vecna’s mind, revealing to him the secrets of multiverse and perhaps provided him with the knowledge to transform into a lich. This Serpent could exist or it could be a creation of Vecna’s own decaying mind. Perhaps a leftover imaginary friend from when he was a child and no one wished to converse with him? I personally believe he sought lichdom himself and most stories tell how he conducted dark, mysterious rituals to transform himself. I’m sure I am more than familiar with the sort of ritual he performed.
Another name that Vecna should consider donning is The Betrayed Lord of He Who Misplaces his Trust. Many know of Kas’s betrayal, but there was another before him: a wizard Apprentice of his known as Acerarak. With desires to obtain his master’s secrets, Acerarak orchestrated Vecna’s near annihilation at the hands of the priests of Pelor. When the lich was at the brink of destruction, Acerarak made a convenient appearance and saved him.
Acerarak soon stole his Master’s secrets and quickly departed before his treachery was discovered. Seeing what Acerarak became, I think it is easy enough to figure out what sort of secrets he stole from Vecna. You’d be correct in blaming Vecna for any damage the Tomb of Horrors/Annihilation has done to you. Humiliated, Vecna became more obsessed with his secrets, swearing to never make the same mistake again.
Then there was Kas the Bloody-Handed or the Destroyer or ultimately, the Betrayer. Kas rose quickly in the ranks of Vecna’s armies, his merciless violence matching Vecna’s own and eventually he became Vecna’s top lieutenant and adviser. If the lich ever had a friend, it was Kas. The two would spend countless hours scheming together to expand Vecna’s empire. So fond of Kas was Vecna, that he extend his life through necromancy. Something I have granted my most loyal of servants. For what better gift is there than the gift of serving me longer…or even forever?
There are two tales regarding how Kas became a vampire. In one, after he could no longer extend his life, Vecna gifted him with a silver, fanged masked. Upon donning the mask, Kas accepted the gift of immortality as a vampire. In the tales told by Vecna’s loyal followers, Kas became a vampire after the pair were claimed by the Mists. I think it more likely the former tale to be the truth as it shows Vecna misplacing his trust a second time, which would be rather embarrassing for a deity of secrets.
As his empire grew, Vecna relied heavily on Kas. He became the lich’s hand of justice and spokesman. Kas’s word was considered as good as Vecna’s. Still, the lich’s past haunted him and the Paranoid Lord could not fathom anyone having true loyalty to him without ulterior motives.
Vecna crafted a sword for Kas. Bards would have you believe the sword was made from the heart of a frozen star and forged in the flames of a stolen sun. Utter nonsense, of course, but it was a very powerful weapon. The lich infused part of his essence into the blade in order to overhear Kas’s plans and, on occasion, read his very thoughts. Perhaps such mind reading spells were beyond Vecna’s abilities? As that seems like a far simpler method.
Kas gave the sword the very original name of The Sword of Kas. The sword, annoyed by its moniker and having taken on far too much of it’s creator’s personality, desired domination and the hording of secrets. Instead of allowing Vecna access to Kas’s conversations and mind, the sword fooled the lich with false thoughts of loyalty while it influenced Kas to betray him. Yes, the God of Secrets and Magic was fooled by a sword he created.
While Vecna was performing complex rituals to ascend to godhood, the sword convinced Kas to attack and destroy the lich. The two were, by all accounts, evenly matched and in the end the only things left of the pair were Vecna’s left hand and eye and the Sword of Kas. All of these artifacts are said to still exist on Oerth and at times, elsewhere. The Sword is one of the few things that may be able to kill the deity of secrets. The eye and hand of Vecna are incredibly powerful, but to use them is to invite the Whispered One into your very soul. Their use in the past has only resulted in disaster for the welders and more often than not fail them at a crucial moment. Fitting for the lich who was cut down by the sword of his own making (unmaking?) by his ‘loyal’ lieutenant while trying to become a god.
Vecna’s essence roamed in between worlds for decades or centuries depending on the source. Foolish mortals continued to worship the fallen lich allowing Vecna to grow in power and become a demigod. That was not enough for his ego, however, and Vecna wished to reshape Oerth in his own image. Working through an Avatar, Vecna began his campaign of domination anew.
Through his Avatar, Vecna had a strong tie to the Prime Material Plane. If he had been satisfied with mere demigodhood, he would never have had this weakness nor a way for the Dark Powers to claim him. But since Vecna’s ego always demands more, the Mists claimed him and his fortress, the Citadel Cavitius.
In Ravenloft, Vecna seethed and obsessed with escaping, but he was also distracted by the presence of Kas the Betrayer, now the lord of Tovag and just on the other side of the volcanic range known as the Burning Peaks that seperated Vecna’s Domain of Cavitus from Kas’s. They sent armies against one another, but as Vlad Drakov has yet to figure out, they could do very little damage to one another.
Cavitius encompassed a life draining desert and a single city, the Cavitius Citadel, where the living survived on fear and desperation. For Vecna knew every event, every thought that occurred within the Citadel’s walls. He was said to “fear none of the living” yet his laws essentially amounted to not worshiping Vecna = death. The lich even outlawed the use of magic just in case one of his subjects decided to rise against him. Sounds like he feared mortals quite a bit, actually.
Trapped in the Mists, Vecna was still a demigod. Some of his more potent abilities include being able to cast any wizard or cleric spell, teleport instantly anywhere in his Domain, and reach his followers outside of Ravenloft. Only the most powerful magical weapons can hope to harm Vecna and even if someone manages to destroy him, he eventually rises again.
Vecna did escape Ravenloft, though because of his pride and desire for vengeance against Kas, he failed in his first attempt. The Serpent taught Vecna the Three Words of Creation, which would transcend him into godhood and thereby break free of his prison. He could have done this without bothering with Kas, but instead he attempted to use the Three Words to be reborn in Togav where he could destroy Kas then escape. This plan ultimately failed as a group of adventurer’s stopped him.
As one should, Vecna did not give up hope and made another attempt to escape, this time ignoring Kas. He knew that in order to become a true god he would need to complete a ritual in which he consumed the essence of another demigod. Seeing as there were no other such beings in Cavitius, Vecna created two tablets, shadowed in mystery and lies, that promised the secrets of transcendence. These tablets drew Iuz, the Corpse King, to Vecna. Iuz invaded Cavitius through a portal from Oerth, but instead of finding his own ascension there, he was consumed by Vecna.
Vecna ascended to true godhood and escaped the Mists. He made his way to the City of Doors (Sigil) and as is his nature, attempted to reshape the entire multiverse in his image. Vecna obviously failed as we are not currently living in a world made up entirely of skulls and imaginary snake friends. Though it is only a matter of time before Vecna tries again…

As much as I hate to say it I wish Ana didnt mute Clovis because for once I was actually interested in what he was about to say.
I feel like there's an untapped well of using Clovis for golden age world building/explaining how some of the magic stuff works in a more "normal way" that Bungie isn't tapping into
Honestly yeah, in a way it would've been cool to hear alternative explanations, especially for things that obviously have roots in the real world. But it is important to remember that, despite everything, Destiny also functions on magic. No matter how many real phenomena are explored and referenced, at the end of the day, there is paracausality, which primarily allowed for all development in the Golden Age, so a piece of magic will always be involved.
I think that Clovis refusing to accept it is a part of why he's the way he is. His refusal to accept it is what led him to vastly underestimating the powers of Darkness (aka Clarity) and the Traveler. It led to all the issues and horrible mistakes in his manufacture and production of Exos. Clovis wants to boil everything down to simple and fully understandable terms that he can control and refuses to realise that there are things beyond him that he doesn't understand and never will.
He was very dismissive of the Vex, who are a species from the dawn of the universe. Clovis views them as nothing more than fuel for his own purpose and he would surely have things to say about stuff like Vault of Glass or the Infinite Forest. But no matter how much he thinks he understands, there will always be an aspect of them that he does not. He is the same with the Hive.
However, it's important to note that the term "magic" is relative. The Hive's grasp on manipulating the fundamental forces of physics is likely so beyond what we understand that their "rituals" with "crystals" are incomprehensible to us. The fact that the Hive themselves are presenting it as magic doesn't help either; we can only evaluate what we see and we see what to us looks like... well, a wizard doing an arcane ritual.
Clovis is largely correct in trying to understand the underlying physics behind it. Because there must be a foundation in physics, which there is. However, Clovis also must understand that there is always going to be something beyond simply physics, something that he will not understand and won't be able to control. That's the point where he becomes unbearable; he is dismissing any notion that there are people doing things outside of his knowledge and control.
I wanted to mention what he said in his little speech before Ana muted him because it piqued my interest when he said:
Crystals, rituals... [scoffs] This is absurd. That's obviously an emitted Casimir field with—
This is far beyond my regular understanding of things but luckily there are people in the fandom with a better grasp on it. Really good analysis of it with simplified explanations here. In short, Casimir Effect is a real phenomenon! Clovis is not speaking entirely out of his ass and this little detail is very helpful for overall understanding of what's going on.
I think Bungie deliberately won't ever go further. If they do, then they would have to scrap space magic and space magic is fundamental to the setting, even when there are real explanations buried somewhere beneath. Like this, they give us a glimpse which allows us to piece things together, but it also leaves an air of mystery to it which is necessary for the setting to truly feel like Destiny.
Clovis is a really good example for stuff that has basis in reality because he is fully grounded and relies only on that, but ignores all other aspects outright. The Hive definitely possess some vastly powerful technology that allows them to utilise this effect on a quantum level, but they also have paracausal powers which Clovis ignores. In all likelihood, the in-setting scholars probably know that the Hive are utilising this effect. The problem is that the Hive are also utilising powers, technology and methods specific to them and have been doing so for hundreds of millions of years.
It would be cool to sit down with some Hive and talk to them about physics though! Not that Clovis would stoop so low, but someone else might. Perhaps one day (this is me pspspsing Savathun).

Taranahmesh the Starcaller
In the annals of Arbalan history, few figures are as enigmatic and revered as Taranahmesh the Starcaller. This great wizard, whose life spanned the epochs of ancient Arbala, dedicated himself to unraveling the universe's most profound and daunting enigmas. His legacy is a tapestry of arcane knowledge, mystical practices, and benevolent deeds.
Taranahmesh's scholarly pursuits led him to confront questions that many feared to even whisper. His research delved into the nature of reality, the fabric of time, and the intricate dance of celestial bodies. Yet, it was his discourse on Sharziqar, a figure shrouded in allegory and myth, that became his magnum opus.
Sharziqar, as Taranahmesh posited, was not merely a mythic entity but a symbol of the intrinsic corruption that had seeped into humanity. This corruption, according to Taranahmesh, manifested in the myriad sufferings and physical defects that plagued mankind. He argued that Sharziqar's influence was a metaphor for the external and malevolent forces that disrupted the natural order and purity of the human race.
Beyond his scholarly achievements, Taranahmesh was a beacon of hope for the downtrodden. His humanitarian efforts were legendary; he provided solace and care for those whom society had cast aside—the forgotten, the sickly, and the afflicted. His compassion knew no bounds, and his healing touch brought comfort to countless souls.
Simultaneously, Taranahmesh was a fierce protector of Arbala. His prowess as an exorcist was unparalleled, and he was often seen battling demons and otherworldly entities that emerged from the dark recesses of space. His confrontations with these extrasolar threats were epic tales of courage and power, as he shielded his homeland from the cosmic terrors that sought to invade it.
Taranahmesh's contributions to Arbalan society were immeasurable. However, his life was not without mystery. The question remains: why did such a learned and powerful wizard choose to engage with the darkness? What drove him to face the horrors that lurked beyond the known universe? And what secrets did he uncover in his quest to understand Sharziqar and the corruption of mankind?
As we reflect on the life of Taranahmesh the Starcaller, we are left with a sense of awe and a multitude of unanswered questions. His theories continue to inspire scholars and mystics alike, and his acts of kindness have become a guiding light for all who seek to follow in his footsteps. Taranahmesh's story is a testament to the enduring spirit of inquiry and the unyielding pursuit of truth, even in the face of the unknown.

D&D Class Test
Wizard The wizard is a scholar of arcane mysteries, embodying intellect, curiosity, and mastery over magic through study and practice. They are seekers of knowledge, delving into ancient tomes and esoteric rituals to unlock the secrets of the universe. Wizards wield magic through rigorous training, mastering complex spells and incantations that manipulate the fundamental forces of reality. Unlike sorcerers or warlocks, who draw upon innate or granted abilities, wizards rely on their intellect and discipline to harness magic. They often specialize in specific schools of magic, such as evocation or transmutation, allowing them to wield their chosen discipline with unparalleled precision. Wizards are respected members of magical society, revered for their wisdom and feared for their formidable powers. Despite their scholarly demeanor, many wizards are driven by a thirst for discovery and adventure, constantly seeking to push the boundaries of magical knowledge. In essence, the wizard is a sage and a spellcaster, wielding magic as a tool to unlock the mysteries of existence.
I'd have been more concerned if I didn't get this result, honestly.

Eldritch Researcher (Pathfinder Second Edition Archetype)
(art by Henning Ludvigsen on Artstation, featured in Arkham Horror by Fantasy Flight Games)
Two weeks ago we looked at the elder mythos scholar archetype, and now we find a spiritual successor of sorts in an archetype in second edition.
While not expressly dealing with elder mythos creatures, the eldritch researcher has a fascination for aberrations, oozes, and the poorly understood secrets of occult magic and how it intersects with arcane magic, which are exactly the sort of vibes we expect from a character that deals with horrors from beyond the stars and other dimensions.
In any case, eldritch researchers, regardless of their background, scoff at the idea of any knowledge being something mortals were not meant to know, risking their minds and bodies delving into secrets so that these terrifying unknowns can become knowns, and therefore less terrifying. Whether they succeed or their discoveries prove even more horrifying upon being revealed is another story.
Looking for an archetype that promises understanding of the occult and otherworldly with a smattering of magical defenses and abilities, this may be for you.
This archetype is also associated with the Abomination Vaults AP, but like all archetypes, it can easily be adapted to any campaign where cosmic horror and research into the unknown comes up.
For their dedication feat, these researchers learn a minor arcane or occult cantrips as well as the basics for wielding that sort of magic, as well as expertise in the arcane or occult, particularly when it comes to identifying magic or investigation.
Though they do not possess divine magic, these researchers possess a fervor that they can bring to bear, fueling powers reminiscent to those possessed by the knowledge, secrecy, or truth domains, manifesting a personal eldritch sign if necessary. Whether these powers truly come from belief or are just occult secrets that bridge upon the divine is unknown.
They can also learn to tug on mystic threads of understanding, translating a touched body of writing for them, though they still have to decipher codes or hidden meanings. They can only do this once a day, though.
Their familiarity with aberrations and oozes gives them insight into how such beings attack, allowing them to reflexively move and dodge to mitigate harm.
Eldritch rituals are also a common focus of study for them, and many master the art of performing these rituals, making them much easier for them.
Oftentime, rare lore and artifacts are lost to time (until they are rediscovered and kick off a whole adventure, of course!), but many of these researchers are not content to let such lore be lost. As such, they learn divination magic that helps them locate objects to better recover such things for their research, though obviously this has limits.
More learned individuals have so much information at their beck and call that they often have a more comprehensive picture when they recall information.
Many also learn to expand their mastery of their pseudo-domain, gaining the greater magics assocated with them.
As their mastery of the occult grows, they learn the secrets of laying various curses on foes, most particularly those that affect the mind and behavior to make focusing on certain types of tasks harder.
Some of the most powerful learn how to conjure otherworldly aberrations to serve them, either to fight, or potentially ask questions of, though the answers they give are especially cryptic due to their alien mindsets (and possibly penchant for mischief).
Powerful researchers also often learn to recall vast amounts of information in an instant, which can be a boon when there are many mysteries on the table but also dangers abound.
While this archetype is available to all classes, it does require some familiarity with arcane and especially occult skills, not to mention intelligence for use with the various magical abilities granted by the archetype. This lends it best to classes like wizard, investigator, bard, and inventor, though nothing’s stopping you from building a high-intelligence fighter that also researchers the occult on the side. Indeed, the special abilities granted by this archetype are mostly utilitarian in nature, making it a useful way to provide knowledge utility to a party.
With the lore of this archetype being what it is, it is likely that your character might be frustrating in-character for the rest of the party, what with their interest into poking their noses into the unknown and other things many would consider best left alone. Then again, they also likely appreciate your expertise as well. Remember though that this archetype represents someone of a decidedly scientific persuasion. Even when they are foolhardy, these characters should probably know at least a little about what they are doing.
Living creatures, but at the same time formed from the very stuff of entropy and unlife, sceaduinar are considered by some researchers to be one of the great mysteries, and thanks to their recent reclassification as extraplanar aberrations, those who seek the eldritch have even more reason to understand them and their mysteries. However, the opinion these crystalline creatures have of natural life has not changed, and they still attack on sight unless bound by magic.
For years, Leksha sought a way to cure her transformation into a fleshwarp, but it became increasingly clear that both in body and mind, this was her true form now. She has not given up hope, but in the meantime her studies have made her an incredible resource into occult knowledge, albeit a reclusive one that is rarely welcomed in most centers of learning.
It is easy to assume that the eldritch entities that exist out there are all malign and hostile, having dark intentions. However, like any society, these entities have a variety of cultures and outlooks. Eager to document them is Dr. Pevara, who styles herself something of an elder mythos anthropologist, and she’s looking to organize an expedition to the various gug settlements of the inner world.

[Eleanor pops into view.] Selene, for reasons I don't entirely understand, I feel compelled to ask you this: from one scholar intent on exploring the mysteries of the universe to another, how do you deal with overly cautious traveling companions? Or perhaps putting it another way, how do you convince your overly cautious traveling companions to trust your judgment now and then, rather than resort to using magic—newfound or not—to stop you from experimenting with those fascinating new artifacts you've stumbled across? You know your companion means well and cares about you, but sometimes, you just need to convince them to trust your judgment, right? Or at the very least stop giving you that look every time you even remotely consider satisfying your curiosity about those mysterious ruins. You know the one, I'm sure—the look, I mean. In any case, eagerly awaiting your wisdom and insight!
*Checks to make sure Edwin is distracted by the girls* Hi Eleanor, apologies for the time it took to answer this, there's been some sort of lurgy doing the rounds over here at the moment. Don't worry, I'm fine now.
That is quite the question. I do empathise about the overly cautious travelling companions, it seems Edwin's time spent in Fangthane has made him incredibly cautious about a great many things to do with arcane magic. I mean, it's somewhat understandable, but it's so frustrating. Then you have the bint of a bird I call a familiar constantly getting on my case either in my ear or in my head. However, with Chrackle, he at least can be easily distracted or directed to go do something else. Edwin however...
I've found that reminding Edwin that I was trained by one of the greatest wizards of his age for at least a decade and a half often works. Yastromo, while an incredibly powerful wizard up until his passing, was a man who impressed upon me how dangerous magic can be if used improperly and I took those lessons to heart.
Chrackle: *fluttering onto Selene's shoulder* You forget that Yasty took on because you shocked yourself trying to cast cantrip that one time?
Selene: *glaring at him* I was a child and untrained at the time! Now hush!
*clears throat* Anyway, during our most recent adventure, Edwin was, honestly quite rightly, a lot more cautious; so when it came to finding those fascinating new fields of study we discovered along the way, it was incredibly difficult to persuade him to allow me the chance to really dig into the arcane side of things at the time. The only way I found to get around that without resorting to using magic was to remind him of the thing I said earlier and if that didn't work, then I would either get Chrackle to grab whatever it was that was so interesting if it was small enough, or if it was too big, simply acquiesce then insist we come back to pick it up later. Unfortunately, Edwin can be incredibly persuasive when he wants to be, and he knows damn well that I can't say no when he looks at me a certain way.
As for experimenting with those artefacts that he does let me pick up? I just wait until he's asleep. Unfortunately that only works if your companion is as deep a sleeper as Edwin often is when he's on the road. If your own companion is a lighter sleeper, then I've found that explaining every precaution that needs to be taken, then implementing it in front of them, tends to work wonders. A lot of the excess caution comes from not fully understanding how the magic works to begin with and then being afraid of any potential negative consequences that can come from experimentation of anything unusual. Explaining what the potential risks are and then doing everything in your power to mitigate them (depending on the level of said risks) often makes those watching relax at least enough for you to tinker and experiment to a limited degree. However, I admit that this will only work if the risks can be mitigated. If not, then I usually have to call it quits and let it go until I can get other wizards to come with me to check the place or artefact out.
I hope that at least some of that was helpful. Unfortunately as I've never met your companion, I can only offer limited advice based on my own experiences with Edwin. I do wish you the best of luck with whatever it is you wish to research, and if you do manage to convince your companion to allow you to, I'd love to hear about it.

If I weren't so nervous, I'd write this on Twitter or AO3, but you don't know how many times I've read and re-read your works. Without the slightest idea of names and events because I've never played any FF game. That doesn't stop me from enjoying reading your fics and enjoying your character. If you ever wrote a novel, I'd likely read that too.
I don't know - I just felt like sharing this. If it's not too late, I'd love it if you'd answer this. Other than Aedric & his snacks. (Which is really, really sweet in itself.) 51: What’s a nonverbal way they say I love you?
Hello anon, please don't be nervous - because I promise you I am even more of a nervous wreck! :) That being said, this is perhaps the most wonderful message I've ever received; I had no idea my writing for this ship breached containment out of the wolgraha/ffxiv tag, let alone that people were reading them that had no idea who or what a G'raha Tia or elezen even was. I woke up this morning to this anon and I almost started sobbing because it made me so happy. Thank you, truly and deeply. I don't even have the words for what this means to me. But perhaps I'll find some; be prepared for a long post!
I am, surprisingly, currently writing an original fantasy novel, and it means the world to me that folks would actually be interested in reading it. I never know if I should mention anything here on my fandom Tumblr about it, as I understand the novelist world at large sometimes looks down on fanfiction authors. But this anon made me realize I probably shouldn't dice myself up into tiny, palatable pieces in order to find respect in the writing community. So I'll talk about it here:
I'm writing a queer fantasy novel that has the tentative title of This Gift Illuminated. It's still in its early stages, and I have been going back and forth on if I'm going to self-publish or just host the story on my own website for people to read for free. For the very first time publicly, I'll share the synopsis:
The world is losing its magic. For centuries, the human Kingdom of Meyra had one rule: those born with mageblood, known as the Gifted, must submit to the royal palace to further their study in the arcane arts. These days, mageblood is rare. So when Farin shows signs of being touched by magic, he's sent away to study in the capitol along with any other Gifted, as rare as they may be. He'd welcome this opportunity with open arms, especially since it means corresponding letters with a mysterious magics expert named Elias. The nation that had long given up on magic now has a new hope. In the elf kingdom of Rime, Elias remains the only person stubbornly dedicated to the study of the arcane. Having lost the last of their magic decades ago, the elves have built a thriving nation with the ingenuity of technological marvels. Elias's many letters to the aging human mages of Meyra have been met with silence and dismissal - until one day his letters are answered by a newly appointed Gifted. Perhaps this Farin is the key to unlocking why both of their peoples have been losing touch with the arcane - as well as save the human kingdom before they suffer the same magic-bereft fate. This Gift Illuminated is a tale of love and learning in a changing world.
Two scholars in different nations fall in love after exchanging letters for years. They are nerds. There are elves and magic, as this seems to be my wheelhouse, so I'm going to stay aboard the "awkward elf nerd and excitable wizard" train as long as I can. I may post more about this on my personal Tumblr @thewizardtower ! I'm thinking of sharing some of the prose, but I'm unsure. Who knows, I might be brave and share the prologue!
And, at last - your wolgraha prompt! Thank you for this.
51. What’s a nonverbal way they say I love you?
Aedric and G'raha both share the love language of touch. Oftentimes, they'll both be reading side-by-side. Even if they're reading separate books entirely, they'll still manage to sit close enough that their knees will brush, or their shoulders will lean against one another, or their spare fingers will interlace - silent, save for the turning of the occasional page, or the flickering of a candle's flame. Sometimes, they'll sit in each others laps wordlessly. Or lazily comb fingers through the other's hair. Sometimes, too, G'raha's tail will wrap around Aedric, and that is perhaps Aedric's favorite. The comforting physical presence of being near each other does wonders on their healing hearts after their many trials and near-death experiences. Just knowing that the other is here within touching distance - alive, whole - is perhaps the greatest healing spell in all of Etheirys.

Full Name: Gale Dekarios
Date of Birth: Unknown, mid-thirties
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Pansexual
Occupation: Wizard, Scholar, Seeker of Mystical Knowledge
Face Claim: Game avatar
Personality:
Gale is a brilliant and confident wizard with a deep passion for magic and the mysteries of the arcane. He is known for his charm, wit, and eloquence, he often engages in philosophical and intellectual conversations, sometimes with a hint of arrogance due to his vast knowledge. His love of learning and discovery makes him somewhat obsessed with talking about the limitless potential of magic. Despite his charming and well-spoken nature, he also carries a strong sense of responsibility and a need for redemption, which reveals a more solemn, introspective side to his personality. The wizard has a strange approach to some dark situations, whilst there are some he will not tolerate, he will move on if required with an “oh well” attitude.
Backstory:
Gale Dekarios was once a renowned and ambitious wizard hailing from the city of Waterdeep. His talents in magic were recognized early, and he quickly became a scholar of all things arcane. Gale’s studies led him to a fateful connection with Mystra, the goddess of magic. Their bond turned into a romantic relationship, an extraordinary affair that granted Gale glimpses of power beyond mortal comprehension.
In his devotion to Mystra, Gale sought to prove himself worthy of her favour. His obsession grew, and to impress her, he attempted to harness a forbidden form of magic known only to deities and otherworldly beings. This act, however, would become his undoing. His experiment failed, unleashing a volatile magical energy that fused with his own body. The result was a dangerous “magical orb” lodged within his chest—a pulsing, unstable wellspring of raw magic that threatened to consume him and anyone nearby if left unchecked.
For his reckless act, Gale lost Mystra’s favour and found himself ostracized by those who once respected him. His fall from grace cast him into a deep well of remorse and self-reflection. Now burdened with both physical and emotional scars, Gale dedicated himself to seeking redemption, hoping that by controlling or removing the orb, he might reclaim some sense of honour and purpose. Despite his shame, he remains captivated by the magic and its mysteries, with a greater sense of humility.

Tales from the Great Library
Extra-dimensional Spaces
A few days later (Day 4) Andros and Khazpar meet outside the House of Rest at high sun, to share a light repast before their afternoon martial practice. Neither have seen hide nor hair of Hyram or Teddy all day -- unusual, indeed, considering the quartet have become something of a clique ever since the Bath House Incident. The missing pair appear as just luncheon concludes, however, looking tired and dusty. Teddy explains they've been up half-the-night searching for a missing scholar.
As he and Hyram grew up in the Great Library, they explored all its labyrinthine passages, vaulted collection chambers, and tucked away staircases ages ago -- so, the logical choices to rouse out before dawn when Missing Matreous needed finding. But, after nine hours’ searching, nothing!
Highly unlikely anyone would disappear from within the Great Library, especially one of the Avowed. Become lost in its three-dimensional maze of collections? Certainly. Happens all the time, in fact, but to vanish without a trace? Never. Too many people about as well as arcane safeguards, preventing that. Sorcerers and wizards can't even teleport in or out but have to use established teleportation circles in the Spire. Even invisible persons and objects have their illusions stripped away whenever they pass through one of the Great Library's archway, and there's well more than a thousand of those!
Teddy insists the only way in or out, other than passing through the public gate, is by transforming oneself into a bird and flying over the rooftops. Perhaps Matreous did something of the sort in response to an urgent message he'd received, choosing a small-swift form no one would notice. But, why depart without a word to anyone? And, why leave his personal possessions scattered about the study chamber he'd been using?
What's more, Khora Kharran directed a sending to Matreous' family at mid-morning, confirming the Sage hasn’t returned home. So, Missing Matreous has presented the perfect "locked door" mystery, baffling all and sundry, alike. The Sage's disappearance also raises serious questions about the state of the Great Library's security.
Hyram: We were just steppin' over t'give the chamber a look. Maybe you Big Folk'd care to join, make yourselves useful for a change? Poke in the high corners, sneeze out the dust mephits. That sorta thing.
Fistandia’s Permanent Magnificent Mansion (FPMM)
Within the study chamber Missing Matreous habitually occupied, Andros and Teddy have little trouble translating marginalia penned onto the pages of Extradimensional Spaces. Andros speaks the word “scepter” aloud, causing a magical doorway to be revealed in one wall – access to Fistandia's Permanent Magnificent Mansion!
Certain they've solved the Mystery of Missing Matreous, four men open the arcane portal and step through with Hyram leading. Sure enough, the gnomish Sage, himself, stands smack in the middle of a foyer beyond, stranded in the extra-dimensional space three days ago. Over-eager to say scepter and explore Fistandia's astounding creation Matreous neglected to finish studying her hand-cribbed notes, so never learned the command word to re-open the door from the inside.
He recognizes Brother Teddy on site, of course, and charges the young Brother with securing FPMM for research by preparing its treasures for removal and cataloging. Fortunately, he's brought a halfling along, to poke into the low-dirty places, and a pair of human giants, for all the heavy lifting. Matreous, himself, will take the statuette he's discovered already and withdraw, keeping the doorway open from the other side.
The moment Matreous departs, however, back to his favorite study chamber, the gnome bursts forth a blood curdling screech and the door slams tight!

Having explored the entire mansion Teddy deciphers the command word liberty, re-opening the door and permitting egress. In the study chamber four men find Matreous hideously murdered, and are attacked by Fistandia's imp. Followings its destruction Teddy summons Adjutants to take charge of the gnome's body and FPMM.
Next day, Hyram sells the jeweled letter opener, silverware, and silver service for 40 gp. Teddy sells the alchemical supplies for half-price, 25 gp. They split the earning with Andros and Khazpar; 16.25 gp, each.

A Sea Tale of Sparkly Stuff and Unexpected Curiosities: The Madness Before Graphene
Ahoy, my stalwart crew of curious minds and daring souls! I, Sinbad the Sailor, have seen many a strange and wondrous thing in my time on the seven seas. From mythical beasts to enchanted isles, my tales have no end. But none so peculiar as the recent events that led me to pen a guide about a marvel called graphene. Gather 'round, and I shall regale you with this tale of happenstance, sparkly stuff, and unexpected curiosities.
It all began on a calm, sun-drenched day. My ship, the Chimera, was docked in a quiet harbor, the crew busy mending sails and scrubbing decks. I, your humble captain, was perusing a scroll of ancient charts, sipping a particularly fine goblet of pomegranate juice, when a loud crash echoed from the lower decks.
Rushing down, I found my first mate, Barnacle Bill, tangled in a mess of ropes and... glitter? "Cap'n," he spluttered, "we've hit upon somethin' strange in the cargo hold!"
Down we went, and lo and behold, the hold was awash with a sparkling substance that shimmered like the waves at sunrise. It clung to every surface, dancing in the flickering lantern light. At the center of this mess was an ancient chest, partially open, with glitter pouring out like a treasure of peculiar nature.
"Blimey," I muttered, kneeling to inspect the chest. It was covered in strange runes and symbols, ones I had never seen before in all my voyages. But what caught my eye was a small, crystalline object nestled within the glitter—a shard of something otherworldly.
Curiosity piqued, I called for Professor Periwinkle, our resident scholar and master of all things arcane and odd. He examined the shard with his magnifying glass, eyebrows shooting up in surprise.
"Captain, this isn't just any glittery stuff. This here is a fragment of what we in the scholarly circles call 'graphite.' And this," he pointed to the crystalline shard, "is graphene—a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It's a material of incredible strength and conductivity. But how it ended up here... that's the real mystery."
Well, you can imagine my astonishment! I, Sinbad, had stumbled upon a material that sounded like it came straight out of a wizard's grimoire. Naturally, my next move was clear: I had to learn more about this graphene.
Days turned into nights as I delved into the world of graphite and graphene. Professor Periwinkle, ever the enthusiastic teacher, bombarded me with tomes and scrolls, explaining the science behind this miraculous material. It was during one of these sessions, as he rattled on about hexagonal lattices and Nobel Prizes, that the idea struck me—why not write a guide for my fellow sailors and seekers of the strange?
And so, armed with newfound knowledge and a desire to share the wonders of graphene, I took quill to parchment. The result, my friends, is the guide you hold now, "The Madcap Mariner’s Guide to Graphene." It's a tale woven from the threads of science and seafaring, a blend of myth and material marvel.
As we set sail on this adventure of discovery, I invite you to join me in exploring the stout-hearted graphene. It's not just a tale of atoms and molecules, but a journey through the vast and mysterious waters of curiosity and innovation. Together, we'll navigate the wonders of this extraordinary substance and uncover the treasures it holds.
So hoist the anchor, unfurl the sails, and let the winds of wonder guide us forward. The age of graphene awaits, and with it, a world of possibilities as endless as the sea itself!
